CINEMA 3 IS COMING SOON... The building of your new sixty-seat screen is now underway. As Glasgow Film, comprising GFT and Glasgow Film Festival, looks forward to a triple anniversary celebration in 2014, with 75 years of a cinema on Rose Street (opening as The Cosmo in 1939), 40 years of GFT and ten years of Glasgow Film Festival, the creation of a third screen will help to cope with demand. Cinema 3 is currently being built on the former site of Café Cosmo. The stylish sixty-seat screen will offer a comfortable and high-quality viewing experience. A new box office, kiosk, reconfigured toilets by the entrance to Cinema 2 and 3, and a new canopy and entrance area will also form the first phase of development. Due to the construction of Cinema 3, our normal access has been affected temporarily resulting in wheelchair user access being possible to Cinema 1 only (not Cinema 2) but we regret that our adapted toilet is being refurbished and is therefore not available at this time. We apologise for any inconvenience and disappointment caused by this essential improvement to our facilities. Please contact us if you would like further information on access requirements or see www.glasgowfilm.org/accessibility for updates. Cinema 2 will also close for essential works from Monday 2 – Thursday 5 September, but Cinema 1 will remain open at this time. Drinks and light snacks are available to take into the cinema. The Balcony Bar is open before screenings with a selection of beer, wine, spirits and soft drinks. Both of our screens are licensed so you can enjoy a drink while watching a film. The popular Orange Wednesdays and 2 for 1 Sunday Herald offers will continue, alongside the introduction of the Tuesday Treats early evening slot where tickets for a selected film cost £4.50 (see p28 for details). Major funding partners of Cinema 3 are Glasgow City Council, Creative Scotland, The Robertson Trust and the Garfield Weston Foundation. To keep up to date on our developments, please sign up for the GFT enewsletter at www.glasgowfilm.org/enewsletter or at Box Office.
OPENING HOURS DURING THE BUILD Monday – Thursday: from 5pm (or half an hour before the first film starts) Friday: half an hour before the first film starts Saturday: from 11am Sunday: from 12 noon

Ageing rock star Susanna (Julianne Moore) and contemporary art dealer Beale (Steve Coogan) are too self-involved to notice their inadequacy as parents. Following their break-up, the fight for Maisie becomes just another battle in an epic war of personalities. When they raise the stakes by taking on inappropriate new partners, the shuffling of their daughter from household to household has troubling consequences. A contemporary reimagining of Henry James' novel, this heartbreaking but redemptive story of family, self-sacrifice and a child’s love is told through the eyes of six-year-old Maisie as she navigates her parents' bitter custody battle with grace, charm and generosity of spirit.
Director Shane Carruth’s long-awaited follow up to Primer is a poetically rendered vision of an alternate world where the very building blocks of identity are dissolved. Kris is the victim of a parasitic worm, which, once swallowed, robs her of the ability to think freely. After handing over her house and assets to a shadowy character known only as ‘The Thief’, Kris struggles to pick up the pieces of her life, along with unemployed financial-sector employee Jeff (played by Carruth), who claims to have undergone a similar experience. Oblique, beautiful and completely bizarre, this is a hallucinogenic foray into what it feels like to discover the world anew.

Paolo Sorrentino (This Must Be the Place) returns to his native Italian roots with this heady study of longing and regret, set against the all-night parties and carnival player atmosphere of contemporary Rome. Jep (Toni Servillo) is a one-time author turned socialite who, looking back at his life, wonders if his failure to write another novel or to start a family is his own doing, or if Italian society at large is to blame. Vividly shot, with Fellini-esque indulgence, the film forms a series of impressions, exploring life, love, philosophy and religion, with hints of a society rotting at its core. Friday 6 – Thursday 12 September
Brought to life with exquisite detail and rich cinematography, the gritty landscape of 1970s Texas Hill Country is the backdrop for this mood-drenched collision of love and crime. After his pregnant wife makes one false move during a bloody shootout, a bank robber faces a twenty-five-year sentence that destroys his dreams of a family life. Shot through with the yearning and melancholy of a folk ballad, David Lowery’s directorial breakthrough – one of the most acclaimed films at Sundance and a special Critics’ Week selection at Cannes – extends the Bonnie and Clyde tradition with its breathtaking meditation on the fragility and transience of love.
In 2004, Californian hip-hop duo Silibil n’ Brains were on the brink of world domination. The two boys from Hemet, California had just bagged a record deal with Sony and with appearances on MTV, as well as supporting D12, they seemed unstoppable. However, there was one minor hitch. Silibil n’ Brains were actually Scottish. This documentary charts the rise and fall of these two boys from Dundee as they attempt to blag their way to the top. Using footage from their video archive, we see the extraordinary lengths to which people will go to attain fame, and what happens when the lie finally catches up with them.

The Artist and the Model El artista y la modelo
Friday 13 – Thursday 19 September Oscar-winning director Fernando Trueba has created an exquisitely crafted reflection on life, death and art, shot in sumptuous black and white. Jean Rochefort is perfectly cast as Marc Cros, an elderly sculptor living in a small market town in the occupied France of 1943. It is his wife and former model who spots Mercè, a fugitive from Franco’s Spain, living rough in the town. She believes the girl can inspire her husband to resume his art and the film is a delicately handled account of the bond that develops between the artist and his model, a subject whose youth and beauty become a symbol of hope in the darkest of times. Set against the inner city backdrop of central Gothenburg, Ruben Östlund’s thoughtfulplayer and occasionally harrowing film details an elaborate scheme known as the ‘little brother number’. Inspired by actual court cases, it portrays a group of African immigrant teenagers who rob a smaller group of teenagers by the means of a psychological game. Heavily debated in the Swedish press, the film is a fascinating exercise in psychology, exploring issues of class and race in a manner which is both engaging and provocative. Tuesday 17 (18.15) & Wednesday 18 September (20.30) An ensemble cast that includes Kristin Scott Thomas, Jean-Pierre Bacri and a scene-stealing Claude Rich impeccably plays Pascal Bonitzer’s elegant comedy of manners. Damien (Bacri) is a weary academic who specialises in Chinese civilisation. His wife Iva (Scott Thomas) is a theatre director. Their comfortable life has grown stale and dull. Then Iva asks her husband to speak to his influential father Sébastien (Rich) about pulling some strings to help a Serbian woman in danger of being deported. Damien is loathe to ask a favour and as he prevaricates, lives are plunged into crisis in this smart, witty delight. Hawking Preview + satellite Q&A with Stephen Hawking: Thursday 19 September (19.05) Friday 20 – Thursday 26 September Hawking is the extraordinary story of the world’s most famous living scientist, told for the first time in his own words and by those closest to him. Made with unique access to Hawking’s private life, this is an inspirational portrait of an iconic figure. Hawking relates his incredible personal journey from boyhood underachiever to PhD genius, to being diagnosed with ALS (or Lou Gehrig’s disease) and given just two years to live. Despite the constant threat of death, Hawking makes amazing scientific discoveries and rises to fame and stardom. Friday 20 – Monday 23 September
Kelly + Victor is a candid depiction of a young couple embarking on a passionate and transgressive love affair, adapted from the novel by Niall Griffiths. When Kelly meets Victor on the dance floor of a Liverpool nightclub, the attraction is instant. After wandering through the night they find themselves at her flat, making love with a passion and urgency that neither have experienced before. Both are struggling to get by as best they can: she is escaping a brutish former lover, while he is being dragged into a world of drugs. This devastating story of obsessive love is anchored by two complex but tender performances.
The latest film from acclaimed film-essayist Jem Cohen is at once a poignant character study, a glorious playercity symphony and an insightful meditation on art. When Johann, an attendant at Vienna’s Kunsthistorisches Museum, meets enigmatic Anne, a Canadian visiting her ill cousin in hospital, the two form a rejuvenating bond. Johann acts as Anne’s guide to Vienna, sharing his knowledge of its art and architecture, seeing the city afresh as he does so. Non-professional actors Mary Margaret O’Hara and Bobby Sommer bring a naturalness and spontaneity to their roles while the striking imagery includes sumptuous close-ups of Bruegel the Elder’s peasant landscapes.
Beautifully intense... a hauntingly honest love story. Screen International Director Kieran Evans Cast Antonia Campbell-Hughes, Julian Morris Ireland/UK 2013, 1h35m, 18

Bonjour Tristesse
Saturday 31 August (13.00) & Sunday 1 September (15.00)
Friday 13 – Sunday 15 September
A woman’s place is with her cooking pots: that is the firmly articulated belief of Subrata Mazumdar, a young bank clerk struggling to support his entire extended family on a meagre salary, and he is duly horrified when his wife Arati (a ravishing, spirited performance from Madhabi Mukherjee) offers to help by going out to work as a ‘salesgirl’. Satyajit Ray’s wonderfully enjoyable portrait of mid-50s Calcutta, a society still adjusting to Independence, displays warmth, wit and genuine insight into its large, multi-generational cast of characters, including Arati’s conservative old father-in-law, her studious teenage sister-in-law, and her benevolently despotic boss. BFI Director Satyajit Ray Cast Anil Chatterjee, Madhabi Mukherjee, Jaya Bhaduri India 1963, 2h13m, subtitles, PG
David Niven plays wealthy playboy Raymond in Otto Preminger’s study of decadence amongst the privileged, based on the novel by Françoise Sagan. Narrated by Raymond’s spoilt and irresponsible daughter Cécile, the film recounts the events of the previous summer; transporting us from the dreary black-and-white Paris of the present day to the Riviera, vividly depicted in Technicolor. When family friend, and Raymond’s old flame, Anne (Deborah Kerr) comes to visit, Cécile feels threatened and schemes to put a spanner in the works of the pair’s blossoming romance. Bonjour Tristesse invites us into the world of the rich and vacuous, while tragedy bubbles below its glossy surface. Classe tous risques Tuesday 24 (20.30) & Wednesday 25 September (18.10) Based on a novel by death-row-inmate-turned-writer José Giovanni, Claude Sautet’s neo-noir directorial debut follows Parisian gangster Abel Davos (Lino Ventura) as he tries to escape from exile in Italy and return to France. After a daring heist goes wrong, Davos arrives in Paris with his two kids in tow, and already running from the law. With his former associates reluctant to help him out, Davos eventually schemes to travel across France in a bogus ambulance with freelance thief Eric Stark (Jean-Paul Belmondo), with whom he builds an unsentimental bond. Shot in stylish monochrome, the film captures the ruthless cool of the gangsters, whilst tackling themes of loyalty and friendship. Stella Does Tricks
Sunday 22 September (13.00) InRealLife takes us on a journey from the bedrooms of British teenagers to the world of Silicon Valley and attempts to discover the damaging effects Internet dependency is having on young people. Filmmaker Beeban Kidron suggests that rather than delivering the promise of free and open connectivity, teenagers are being increasingly ensnared in a commercial world. Although superficially beguiling and glossy, the Internet can actually be alienating and addictive. Quietly building its case, InRealLife asks if we can afford to stand by while our children, trapped in their 24/7 connectivity, are being outsourced to the net? The screening will be followed by a live satellite Q&A with director Beeban Kidron and other special guests, hosted by broadcaster Jon Snow. Director Beeban Kidron UK 2013, 1h26m, CTBC

Their story is told entirely without words, yet the film is far from silent: it features a remarkable original score by the Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson. Using rarely-seen archive footage, The Miners’ Hymns celebrates social, cultural and political aspects of the extinct industry. Focusing on the Durham coalfield, it depicts the hardship of pit work, increasing mechanisation, the role of trade unions in organising and fighting for workers’ rights, and their annual Miners’ Gala in Durham. Followed by a panel discussion hosted by Dr Andrew Perchard, lecturer at Strathclyde Business School. Director Bill Morrison / UK 2010, 52m, U

When the government of Indonesia was overthrown by the military in 1965, Anwar Congo and his friends were promoted from small-time gangsters to death squad leaders. They helped the army kill more than one million alleged communists and intellectuals in less than a year. In this extraordinary documentary, director Joshua Oppenheimer urges the ageing gangsters to make a movie, recreating their experiences. What emerges is a harrowing and surreal portrait of mass murder – complete with musical numbers, film noir gangster scenes, and yodelling cowboys – and the scene is set for a bold historical reckoning.
Former UN employee Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt), his wife Karin (Mireille Enos) and their two daughters sit in heavy Philadelphia traffic (or George Square as we know it!) when the city is attacked by a horde of zombies. As the chaos spreads, the Lanes escape the city and are saved by the military. However, it’s not long before Gerry is drafted in to help save mankind…

Dust on the Bible
Autumn Tale
Sunday 1 September (20.00)
Tuesday 10 September (20.00)
Dust on the Bible is director John T Davis’ second study of evangelical Christianity. His first, Route 66 (1985), depicts his experience of religious fundamentalism in America’s ‘Bible Belt’. Although Davis returns to this subject matter with Dust on the Bible, he relocates the exercise to his native Northern Ireland. Driving through the country in search of meaning, Davis explores the notion of salvation through suffering, with a focus on street preachers in Belfast as an embodiment of the madness he felt permeated Ireland in the 1980s.
The final installment in Eric Rohmer's Tales of the Four Seasons quartet follows the romantic fortunes of widowed wine producer Magali (Béatrice Romand), who lives alone at her vineyard after the departure of her grown children. When Magali's best friend Isabelle (Marie Rivière) decides to find her a new husband by placing an ad in the local newspaper, things start to get complicated... Delightfully unpredictable, warm and nuanced.

The Blueblack Hussar
Sunday 1 September (18.00)
Sunday 8 September (20.00)
Morrissey 25: Live is a concert film marking twenty-five years of Morrissey's solo career, shot during his most intimate gig in decades, at the Hollywood High School in Los Angeles on 2 March 2013. The film opens with fans talking about their unwavering devotion to the singer and the unique appeal of this unusual venue – in striking contrast to the packed Staples Centre arena the previous night. Tickets to the gig in the 1,800-seater school auditorium sold out in 12 seconds and for many the event has already become legendary. This is the first authorised Morrissey film for nine years and features many classic tracks from his huge repertoire.
In the 1980s iconic pop star Adam Ant was at the height of his fame. Twenty years later, following a mental breakdown, he was locked up and forcibly sedated, putting him in a state of artistic oblivion. This fascinating documentary follows him on his first tour in fifteen years as he plays small London clubs, culminating in a performance before 55,000 at Hyde Park. Featuring actress Charlotte Rampling who inspired his first album Dirk Wears White Sox, producer Mark Ronson and the artist who was his mentor, Allen Jones.

Captured by the Roman army, Spartacus and Phrygia are condemned to slavery. After becoming a gladiator, Spartacus foments a legendary rebellion. This grandiose epic is one of Khachaturian’s most famous works, and has been considered one of the greatest ballets in the Bolshoi repertoire since the 1960s. A production with spectacular choreography and scenery, Yuri Grigorovich’s version remains the most critically acclaimed.
In the marketplace of Adrianople, the beautiful Medora is sold to Pasha by a slave dealer. But a pirate, hidden among the crowd with his companions, decides to ravish her. Inspired by Lord Byron’s poem, Marius Petipa’s version of the ballet was part of the Bolshoi’s repertoire until the beginning of the 20th century. In 2007 Alexei Ratmansky and Yuri Burlaka presented a new choreographic version, which stands out as the most sumptuous of all. Thrilling suspense is at the core of this lavish exotic fable, an amazing production complete with pirates, kidnapping, a shipwreck, and a record 120 dancers on stage. 3h. Recorded on 11 March 2012

Cinema 3 will have 60 seats which can be sponsored by cinema-goers, as well as trusts, companies, clubs and organisations. GFT is a registered Scottish Charity. GFT – A Legacy for Life
Many of our audience members tell us what GFT means to them; it’s not just a cinema, it’s a cherished part of their lives. Going to GFT – and to its predecessor The Cosmo – is passed down from generation to generation as patrons introduce their families and friends to the cinema. By making a contribution to GFT through your Will, you can keep your passion of cinema alive for future generations and choose which area of our work you wish to support: whether it’s Glasgow Film Festival, GFT’s work with children and young people, or keeping favourite classics alive on screen. If you would like to discuss making a gift to GFT in your Will, please contact Liana on 0141 352 8604, email liana.marletta@glasgowfilm.org or write to Development, GFT, 12 Rose Street, Glasgow G3 6RB. GFT is a registered Scottish Charity. This means that inheritance tax does not apply to any bequests left to GFT. The Arts & Business Scotland website offers some useful information on legacies to charities: www.aandbscotland.org.uk/legacies.
