one minute movie competition Have you got what it takes to make a 60-second movie masterpiece? Glasgow Youth Film Festival 2011 is now taking entries for its annual One Minute Movie Competition in association with Chew TV. The competition is open to anyone in Scotland aged 14 to 19. This year the judges are looking for entries about the best-kept secrets in your neighbourhood. It can be about your friends’ favourite place to hang out, a childhood memory or anything unique to where you live. We’re looking for all kinds of films: comedies, dramas, animations, documentaries, mixed-genre… The most imaginative and creative films will be rewarded with special prizes. One of the prizes will be an Alienware Laptop (worth £800), kindly supplied by Muvizu for Best Individual Film. Other prizes thanks to BAFTA in Scotland. Completed entries must be uploaded to Chew TV website by Tuesday 1 February 2011 before 6pm. For details on how to enter, plus terms and conditions, visit www.glasgowfilm.org/festival/oneminute.

The Way Back Sunday 2 – Thursday 13 January Peter Weir’s The Way Back unfolds during 1940 in the hell of a Siberian prison camp, with suspected political dissidents and brutal criminals all suffering nature’s harshest fury. Adapted from Slavomir Rawicz’s novel, the story follows six prisoners who undertake a desperate, suicidal escape. Ed Harris plays a misanthropic American expat, Colin Farrell a wily Russian thug, and Saoirse Ronan a mysterious girl encountered on the journey. The revelation, however, is young British actor Jim Sturgess as Janusz, an idealistic Pole and unexpected leader. This is a harrowing epic that finds Peter Weir (Master and Commander) working at the top of his game. Director Peter Weir Cast Colin Farrell, Ed Harris, Jim Sturgess, Saoirse Ronan USA 2010, 2h32m, 12A: Contains infrequent strong language, moderate violence and sex references

Sunday 2 – Thursday 6 January A rich Italian family, who own a pasta factory, gather to celebrate the handover of the business from father to eldest son Antonio. Younger son Tommaso decides to use the occasion to reveal that he is gay but, shockingly and farcically, his older sibling pre-empts him by making his own identical announcement. Tommaso is thus left stranded, still hiding his sexuality, and when Antonio is summarily booted out of the firm, finds himself uncomfortably holding the reins at the family business. A witty, well-observed drama beautifully played by its ensemble cast, especially by Italian heartthrob, Riccardo Scamarcio. Director Ferzan Ozpetek Cast Riccardo Scamarcio, Alessandro Preziosi, Nicole Grimaudo Italy 2010, 1h53m, subtitles 12A: Contains one use of strong language and moderate sex references
An Ordinary Execution Sunday 2 – Thursday 6 January Based on his own successful novel, Marc Dugain’s debut feature describes an imagined encounter between the aging Joseph Stalin and Anna, a young doctor with extraordinary healing abilities. The apprehension Anna feels as she enters the menacing milieu of the old tyrant is palpable, his daily rantings revealing a warped philosophy of terror. Brilliantly shot to reflect the grimness of oppression, and filled with tension and mystery, An Ordinary Execution is a compelling film. Director Marc Dugain Cast Marina Hands, Andre Dussollier, Edouard Baer, Denis Podalydes France 2010, 1h45m, subtitles 12A: Contains moderate sex references and descriptions of torture

One of the world’s most visionary directors Lukas Moodysson (Together, Lilya-4-Ever) deftly weaves a multi-layered narrative to build up a powerful portrait of contemporary life. Director Lukas Moodysson Cast Gael García Bernal, Michelle Williams Sweden/Denmark 2009, 2h5m, some subtitles, 15
Waiting For Superman Sunday 9 – Tuesday 11 January Despite increased spending and politicians’ promises, America’s buckling public education system, once the best in the world, routinely forsakes the education of millions of children. Oscar-winning filmmaker Davis Guggenheim (An Inconvenient Truth) reminds us that education ‘statistics’ have names: Anthony, Francisco, Bianca, Daisy and Emily, whose stories make up the engrossing foundation of Waiting For Superman. Following the screening on Monday 10 January (17.30) will be a panel discussion: What lessons can the Scottish education system take from the Harlem Children’s Zone featured in Waiting For Superman? Chaired by filmmaker and academic Nick Higgins, the panel will include: Phil Hanlon, Professor of Public Health at University of Glasgow; Keir Bloomer, former leader of the Association of Directors of Education; and Linda Kirkwood, former head teacher and educational consultant. Tuesday 11 (16.00/20.45) & Wednesday 12 January (13.45/18.15) Michel Gondry’s documentary portrait of his beloved aunt Suzette is both a tribute to a remarkable woman – we see, through interviews with former pupils and colleagues, her influence as a rural teacher – and a sobering reminder that people’s public and private lives can differ in strange, sometimes disturbing ways. Using homemovies mostly shot by Suzette’s now grown son, Gondry subtly reveals how both this formidable matriarch and France itself have changed over the decades. It’s Kind of a Funny Story Friday 14 – Thursday 20 January Powered by a breakout lead performance from comic star Zach Galifianakis, It’s Kind of a Funny Story is a deft dive into the world of teen angst. Checking yourself into a psych ward may seem extreme, but if you’re like Craig (Keir Gilchrist) – sixteen-yearsold, attending a school for gifted students and carrying a ticking time bomb of high expectations from your upper-middle-class New York parents – then it is a mature act of self-preservation. Unfortunately for Craig, a shy, sensitive boy prone to shocking moments of awkwardness, the adolescent ward is being renovated and he can find room only in the adult wing… A surprisingly funny film from the directors of Half Nelson and Sugar. Directors Ryan Fleck, Anna Boden Cast Keir Gilchrist, Emma Roberts, Zach Galifianakis USA 2010, 1h41m, 12A: Contains one use of strong language & references to sex, drugs and suicide

Friday 21 January – Thursday 3 February
Friday 21 January – Thursday 3 February
Glasgow, 1973. Young John McGill is about to start secondary school. He’s a bright and sensitive boy, eager to learn, but the cards are stacked against him. His family are poor and his father’s a drunk, his mother is troubled and repressed and his elder brother is always in trouble with the law. At school, there are one or two good teachers, but most are uninterested and unhelpful in the face of the brutal and territorial gang culture that has spread from local housing estates to the school. The uneasy question Mullan poses is whether or not John can transcend the destiny of his class, education and family to make something of himself. GFT is delighted that director Peter Mullan will attend the screening on Sunday 23 January (14.00) and participate in a Q&A after the screening. Programme notes are available in the cinema and online at www.glasgowfilm.org Director Peter Mullan Cast Conor McCarron, Joe Szula, Mhairi Anderson, Gary Milligan UK 2010, 2h3m, 18
Darren Aronofsky’s filmmaking takes yet another unexpected turn with Black Swan, a sophisticated psychological thriller set in the milieu of the New York Ballet. Natalie Portman stars as a ballerina desperate to play the lead in Swan Lake, with Vincent Cassel as the artistic director of the company and Mila Kunis as Portman’s rival. Sensuous and accomplished, the film gives a nod to both Rosemary’s Baby and The Red Shoes but remains decidedly original. Biutiful Friday 28 January – Thursday 10 February Set in Barcelona’s grungy underworld, Iñárritu’s return to Spanish-language filmmaking (after 21 Grams and Babel) combines hard-hitting drama, striking visuals and an award-winning performance from Javier Bardem. Uxbal (Bardem) is a man whose life is already unravelling when we meet him. At home he’s a caring and responsible single father, loving and loved by his two children. Outside he’s something of a hustler, striking deals and running rackets with illegal immigrants: drug dealers, sweatshop workers and labourers… As he ducks and dives through Barcelona’s back alleys and hidden spaces, it’s clear that his health is failing, and his family responsibilities take on a new urgency. Blue Valentine Friday 4 – Thursday 10 February On the far side of a once-passionate romance, Cindy and Dean are married with a young daughter. Hoping to save their marriage, they steal away to a theme hotel. We then encounter them years earlier, when they met and fell in love, full of life and hope. Moving fluidly between these two time periods, Blue Valentine unfolds like a cinematic duet whose refrain asks, where did their love go? Framing the film as a mystery whose answer lies scattered in time (and in character), filmmaker Derek Cianfrance constructs an elegant set of dualities: past and present, youth and adulthood, vitality and entropy. Because Gosling and Williams bring amazing intensity and emotional honesty to their roles, the experience of connecting to these two souls becomes truly moving. Director Derek Cianfrance Cast Ryan Gosling, Michelle Williams USA 2010, 2h, cert tbc
Rabbit Hole Friday 4 – Thursday 17 February Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart play Becca and Howie Corbett, a couple trying to mourn, but unsure how to do it. They have retreated into politeness and private rituals, appearing more and more isolated in their upper middle-class home, which looks especially barren now that their young son is gone after a hit-and-run tragedy. John Cameron Mitchell shapes this material with maturity and grace. Dianne Wiest, as Becca’s mother, gives a nuanced performance to match the best of her work. Eckhart is superb as a husband tortured by both the death of his son and the withering of his marriage. Kidman is remarkable. We expect disciplined, precise work from her, but there is new range here, and a willingness to show frayed emotions that makes this one of the finest performances of the year. Toronto Film Festival 2010 Director John Cameron Mitchell Cast Nicole Kidman, Aaron Eckhart, Dianne Wiest, Sandra Oh USA 2010, 1h30m, 12A: Contains one use of strong language and soft drug use

valentine’s day Casablanca
Breakfast at Tiffany’s
As time goes by, the appeal of Casablanca shows no sign of diminishing. Originally intended as a WWII propaganda movie, it remains a marvellous blend of bittersweet romance, wisecracking comedy and wartime intrigue. Wonderfully acted by its cast, it’s the story of a laconic nightclub-owner Rick (Humphrey Bogart), whose life in Casablanca is shaken up by the arrival of old flame Elsa (Ingrid Bergman) with her Resistance leader husband. Tom Dawson, BBC
An Oscar-nominated Audrey Hepburn gives one of her most enchanting performances as Holly-Go-Lightly, a wonderful free spirit who lights up the room in her little black dress. Fat City
Wise Blood
A neglected minor masterpiece, Huston’s adaptation of the novel by Leonard Gardner tells of small-time boxers in Stockton, California. At twenty-nine, Billy Tully is washed-up and past his youthful prime. As he mulls over a return to the ring, he begins sparring with fresh-faced young hopeful Ernie Munger with whom he strikes up a friendship. Shot by the great Conrad Hall and featuring music by Kris Kristofferson, Fat City is a grubby, downbeat classic, worthy of comparison with classic boxing pictures such as Rossen’s Body and Soul or Scorsese’s Raging Bull.
This offbeat 1979 adaptation of the Flannery O’Connor novel is one of the lesser-known entries in Huston’s filmography. It’s the story of Hazel Motes, an impassioned young preacher and his attempts to establish a new religion in the small southern town of Taulkinham. Huston was always a master when it came to literary adaptations – he adapted Crane, Melville, Hammett, Joyce and McCullers amongst others – and Wise Blood is certainly no exception.

The Last Picture Show
Heartworn Highways
Small-town Texas in the early 1950s is the setting for Peter Bogdanovich’s breakthrough film, based on the semiautobiographical novel by Larry McMurtry. It’s a coming-of-age tale focusing on two friends, Sonny and Duane and their days spent in moviehouses, playing basketball and chasing girls. Expertly utilising the music of Hank Williams and shot in highcontrast black and white, the film is a real high point of the New American cinema.
Easily deserving of mention alongside classic music documentaries such as Pennebaker’s Don’t Look Back and Scorsese’s The Last Waltz, Szalapski’s film focuses on some of the major figures of the outlaw country movement of the mid-1970s. Texan troubadours Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Rodney Crowell and a young Steve Earle all feature, performing some of their bestloved songs and discussing the stories behind the music.

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) reunite as two comic book geeks travelling across America on a sci-fi pilgrimage. On their travels, they pick up a hitchhiking alien called Paul (voiced by Knocked Up’s Seth Rogan) who’s escaped from the infamous Area 51. Chased by federal agents and religious fanatics across the country, the two nerds must help Paul return to his mother ship. Featuring cameos by Glee’s Jane Lynch and Sigourney Weaver, Paul is a hilarious and loving tribute to sci-fi geeks across the galaxy. Thanks to Universal for this preview. We hope to welcome the cast of Paul for this special gala screening.

Lord of the Flies
Beastie
Tuesday 15 February (12.45)
Tuesday 15 February (17.30)
Theatre master Peter Brook’s classic adaptation of the popular William Golding novel, back on the big screen a century after the author’s birth. A British plane, evacuating children from an unspecified war, crashes on a tropical island. At first the boys who survive are delighted with their newfound freedom in paradise, but, as fears mount and a self-imposed oppression grows, the boys are transformed with terrifying consequences.
Beastie is a dynamic short film inspired by the themes and imagery from William Golding’s classic novel Lord of the Flies. Created by Theatre Royal Glasgow and dance company New Adventures, the film forms part of a thrilling new dance adaptation by award-winning dance director Matthew Bourne. With a cast of local boys and young men, Beastie is a raw, filmic interpretation of Golding’s key themes of order and chaos, tribal identity and survival.
This screening will be introduced by a member of the creative team behind Beastie (which screens on the same day at 17.30) who will explain how the novel and film inspired Matthew Bourne’s new dance production of Lord of the Flies for Theatre Royal.
The screening will be followed by a Q&A with filmmaker Alan Stockdale of Foundlight Productions and director Scott Ambler of New Adventures. We hope that choreographer Matthew Bourne will be in attendance.

Dancing Dreams Tuesday 15 February (18.45) In 2007, leading choreographer Pina Bausch decided to revisit her classic 1978 dance theatre piece Kontakthof, an intense study of love, intimacy and human relations, and re-stage it with teenagers. Dancing Dreams follows a year of rehearsals with forty young performers from Wuppertal, an industrial town in Germany’s Ruhr area, where Pina Bausch and her company reside. Pina Bausch’s sudden death in 2009 was significant for the modern dance world. This film shows her genius, tenacity and passion for choreography and the impact that her work has had on emerging dancers, past and present. Wasted on the Young
Tuesday 15 February (20.30)
Wednesday 16 February (18.15)
12-year-old Kurdish boy Ahmed has not seen his father for over a decade. He and his grandmother set out across Iraq to find him, just weeks after the fall of Saddam Hussein’s rule. The road is hard and the pair find themselves pulled between hope and despair as they gradually learn more about Iraq’s missing people. This is a powerful and significant film, both emotionally poignant and artistically accomplished.
Handsome and cruel Zack rules over an exclusive Australian boarding school with a manipulatively smooth touch. When his attempts at flirtation with self-assured new girl Xandrie are dismissed, Zack is more than a bit miffed. After she’s brutally attacked at Zack’s party, Xandrie discovers that the best revenge is only a computer click away. With its ruthless teen characters and a pulsating score, Wasted on the Young bravely explores the dangers of social networking with potent and visual panache. Drawing strong comparisons to Gus Van Sant’s Elephant, the film is guaranteed to provoke spirited debate. UK premiere.
Winner of the Amnesty International Film Award and the Peace Film Award (Berlin, 2010). We hope to welcome director Mohamed Al-Daradji to the screening.

Sajid, the youngest, is deep in crisis as he tries to cope with his father George’s insistence on tradition while being bullied at school. In a last attempt to make him conform, George decides to take Sajid to his first wife’s home in Pakistan, to live alongside the daughters he abandoned thirty years earlier. It’s not long before Sajid’s mother, Ella, follows to reclaim her family and to confront issues both past and present, with a small English entourage in tow… We hope that members of the cast and crew will join us for this special closing gala screening for Glasgow Youth Film Festival. Payday
Monday 17 (18.30) & Tuesday 18 January (20.45) Spend thirty-six hours in the company of a madman as Rip Torn delivers a truly unhinged performance playing Maury Dann, a drug-addled and sociopathic country music star. Daryl Duke’s film remains virtually unknown but fizzes with an authenticity that movies like Crazy Heart can only dream of. Three real-life country music legends have claimed that this film is actually the story of their lives. Payday is the real deal. Ride, Rise, Roar Thursday 20 January (20.30) Ride, Rise, Roar is a David Byrne concert film that blends riveting onstage performances with intimate details of the creative collaborations that make the music and performance happen. Shot with multiple cameras over several concerts during the 08/09 tour, the film blends the energy and charisma of classic Talking Heads with the heartfelt pathos of David Byrne and Brian Eno’s most recent collaboration. The film achieves an unprecedented intimacy with David Byrne and the band, documenting behind-the-scenes auditions, rehearsals and interviews with key players. The screening is followed by a Q&A, live via satellite, with David Byrne. All tickets are £12.50 and £10 for CineCard holders Director David Hillman Curtis USA 2009, 2h30m, N/C 15+
Monorail Film Club
The Switchboard Operator Sunday 30 January (19.30) Set in 1960s Belgrade, this is the story of a tragic romance between a young telephonist and a corporation rat-catcher. Isabella, a liberated young woman from the Hungarian minority represents a more modern, cosmopolitan Yugoslavia while Ahmed, a traditional Muslim, represents a more conventional, fractured perspective. In this endlessly time-shifting exploration of love and freedom in a Communist state, the narrative is non-linear with extraneous images and interviews similar in style to some Godard films. This is a brilliant looking and, with hindsight, prescient film. Selected and introduced by Al Kingsbury, a contributor to the Monorail Film Club. Al runs a fortnightly dj night called Fantastic Adventures, every first and third Friday at The 78, Kelvinhaugh Street, Glasgow. Join the film club after the screening in Café Cosmo. Director Dusan Makavejev / Cast Eva Ras, Slobodan Aligrudic Yugoslavia 1967, 1h19m, subtitles, 18
