L’affaire Farewell Friday 29 April – Thursday 12 May Farewell is an intricate and highly intelligent thriller pulled from the pages of history about an ordinary man thrust into the biggest theft of Soviet information on the Cold War. Moscow, 1981: disenchanted KGB operative Sergei Gregoriev (Kusturica), the centre of the so-called Farewell affair, makes contact with French businessman Pierre Froment (Canet). Over the next two years, Froment will act as intermediary, routing the Russian double agent’s secrets to the highest level in the French and American governments. Director Christian Carion establishes a low-key yet threatening atmosphere right from the start eliciting terrific performances from Kusturica and Canet (themselves both successful European directors), who make their characters believably human, the antithesis of the super-human Bourne.

Director Danny O’Connor calls Creation Records the ‘UK’s most inspired and dissolute label’ and it all began right here in Glasgow with the signing of The Jesus and Mary Chain. The rise and fall of the celebrated indie label is a classic tale of rock ’n’ roll excess in which founder Alan McGee was the leading party animal. McGee is one of those interviewed at length in a definitive documentary that salutes the insanity and the lasting influence of a label behind some of the most unforgettable music of our time from Oasis, Primal Scream, Teenage Fanclub and My Bloody Valentine. Fresh interviews are mixed with concert footage that includes the legendary Oasis concert at Knebworth.

Cold Weather Friday 29 April – Sunday 1 May Featuring an idiosyncratic lyrical style and naturalistic performances, this low-key slackerdetective film has a charm all its own. After abandoning a promising academic career in forensic science, Doug, a self-styled Sherlock Holmes, returns to Portland, Oregon to live with his more responsible older sister. He takes a dead-end job working in an ice factory but soon finds an opportunity to use his passion and skill in detective work when his ex-girlfriend, Rachel, goes missing. Doug enlists a ramshackle team of amateur sleuths and leads them down a complex trail of clues, coming ever closer to discovering the mysterious truth about Rachel. The Portuguese Nun A Religiosa Portuguesa Monday 2 – Thursday 5 May Visionary French filmmaker Eugene Green’s luminous love letter to Lisbon has held critics spellbound. Julie, a French actress who has newly arrived in the city to act in an adaptation of a book of 17th-century love letters, soon finds life mirroring art. Embarking on a spiritual journey between shooting, she encounters a range of eccentric characters, from a suicidal count to a Portuguese nun, who lead her discover a new purpose in life. Entrancing, dream-like sequences merge with a lovely Fado score to create beguiling and exquisite cinema. Thousands of dancers, their families and teachers descend upon Glasgow from around the globe for one drama-filled week. Clad in wigs, make up, fake tan, diamantes and dresses worth thousands of pounds, they compete for the coveted world titles. This is the first time a documentary crew has been given access to the littleknown world of competitive Irish Dancing and what they discover is a world of dedication, hard work, obsession, passion, success and failure, populated by wonderful characters of all ages. A bittersweet account of J R Ackerley’s fourteen-year relationship with his adopted Alsatian, My Dog Tulip was written, directed and animated by award-winning filmmakers Paul and Sandra Fierlinger, and is the first animated feature ever to be entirely hand drawn and painted using paperless computer technology.
Jûsan-nin no shikaku Cult director Takashi Miike (Ichi the Killer, Audition) delivers a bravado period action film set at the end of Japan’s feudal era. In a bloody tale of politics and betrayal a group of unemployed samurai are enlisted to bring down a sadistic lord and prevent him from ascending to the throne and plunging the country into a wartorn future. This epic film climaxes in a magnificent forty-five-minute showdown, full of fiery explosions, showers of arrows and clashing swords, that is one of the most exciting battle sequences in recent cinema. Ackerley hardly thought of himself as a dog lover when, in middle age, he came to adopt Tulip – a beautiful, yet intolerable eighteen-month-old German shepherd. To his surprise, she turned out to be the love of his life, the ideal companion he had been searching for in vain. In vivid and sometimes startling detail, the film reveals Tulip’s often erratic behaviour, canine tastes, and Ackerley’s determined efforts to ensure an existence of perfect happiness for her. Very amusing and beautifully drawn… a treat for the dog lover and the dogless alike. A woman investigates the death of her twin sister while slowly losing her sight in this tense Spanish thriller, produced by Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth). This brilliant, nightmarish portrait of one man’s descent into hell is a landmark of 1970s American cinema. Le Quattro Volte Friday 27 May – Thursday 2 June Hailed as a ‘genre defying work of cinematic transcendence’, Le Quattro Volte was one of the great discoveries of the last Cannes Film Festival. The eagerly awaited second feature from Michelangelo Frammartino is a spellbinding fusion of languidly beautiful imagery and bracing philosophical rumination. The circle of life lies at the heart of a film shot in the countryside of Calabria and focusing on an elderly shepherd who will eventually become a baby goat, a giant tree and a lump of coal as his soul undergoes a journey from human to animal, vegetable and mineral. With the geometric, Bauhaus-inspired hairdos he pioneered in the 1960s and his ‘wash and wear’ philosophy that liberated generations of women from the tyranny of the salon, Sassoon revolutionised the art of hairstyling and left an indelible mark on popular culture. The largest domestic natural gas drilling boom in history has swept across the United States. The Halliburton-developed drilling technology of ‘fracking’ or hydraulic fracturing has unlocked a ‘Saudia Arabia of natural gas’ just beneath the earth. But is fracking safe? When filmmaker Josh Fox is asked to lease his land for drilling, he embarks on a cross-country odyssey uncovering a trail of secrets, lies and contamination. A recently drilled nearby Pennsylvania town reports that residents are able to light their drinking water on fire. When it was discovered that there was a reserve of 11 trillion cubic feet of natural gas 80km off the west coast of Ireland, a consortium led by Shell developed plans to lay a pipeline into County Mayo, through the village of Rossport. Without having been consulted in the planning process, the small farming and fishing community objected, fearing the risk of environmental damage, and understandably keen to protect their land, fishing grounds and, indeed, their very way of life. The Great White Silence Sunday 22 (15.15) & Tuesday 24 May (12.45) A hundred years ago the British Antarctic Expedition led by Captain Scott set out on its ill-fated race to the South Pole. Joining Scott on board the Terra Nova was official photographer and cinematographer Herbert Ponting, and the images that he captured have fired imaginations ever since. Ponting filmed almost every aspect of the expedition: the scientific work, life in camp and the local wildlife – including the characterful Adélie penguins. Those things he was unable to film he boldly recreated back home. The BFI National Archive has now restored Ponting’s resulting feature length film using the latest techniques, reintroducing its sophisticated use of colour. Four themed filmmaking competitions for under-18s will take place in the run up to GYFF 2012. We're looking for 5-minute short films based on the legend behind the Glasgow's city crest – the first theme is Bird so get creative and get cracking! Winners will be announced online with a grand prize awarded during GYFF 2012. GFT accepts the CEA Card (www.ceacard.co.uk). With the exception of the Balcony Bar and Education Room all public areas of the GFT are fully accessible to people using wheelchairs. Toilet facilities for wheelchair users are available on the ground floor. We have a lift to Cinema 1 for customer use. We can offer an infrared sound facility for the hearingimpaired (please ask at Box Office for a head set). There is disabled badge holders’ parking to the rear of the building in Cambridge Street.
