Farewell

L’affaire Farewell Friday 29 April – Thursday 12 May Farewell is an intricate and highly intelligent thriller pulled from the pages of history about an ordinary man thrust into the biggest theft of Soviet information on the Cold War. Moscow, 1981: disenchanted KGB operative Sergei Gregoriev (Kusturica), the centre of the so-called Farewell affair, makes contact with French businessman Pierre Froment (Canet). Over the next two years, Froment will act as intermediary, routing the Russian double agent’s secrets to the highest level in the French and American governments. Director Christian Carion establishes a low-key yet threatening atmosphere right from the start eliciting terrific performances from Kusturica and Canet (themselves both successful European directors), who make their characters believably human, the antithesis of the super-human Bourne.

Upside Down: The Creation Records Story Friday 29 April – Thursday 5 May

Programme notes are available in the cinema and online at www.glasgowfilm.org

Director Danny O’Connor calls Creation Records the ‘UK’s most inspired and dissolute label’ and it all began right here in Glasgow with the signing of The Jesus and Mary Chain. The rise and fall of the celebrated indie label is a classic tale of rock ’n’ roll excess in which founder Alan McGee was the leading party animal. McGee is one of those interviewed at length in a definitive documentary that salutes the insanity and the lasting influence of a label behind some of the most unforgettable music of our time from Oasis, Primal Scream, Teenage Fanclub and My Bloody Valentine. Fresh interviews are mixed with concert footage that includes the legendary Oasis concert at Knebworth.

Director Christian Carion Cast Emir Kusturica, Guillaume Canet, Willem Dafoe France 2009, 1h53m, subtitles, 12A: Contains strong language

Director Danny O’Connor Cast Alan McGee, Bobby Gillespie, Noel Gallagher UK 2010, 1h41m, 15

Cold Weather Friday 29 April – Sunday 1 May Featuring an idiosyncratic lyrical style and naturalistic performances, this low-key slackerdetective film has a charm all its own. After abandoning a promising academic career in forensic science, Doug, a self-styled Sherlock Holmes, returns to Portland, Oregon to live with his more responsible older sister. He takes a dead-end job working in an ice factory but soon finds an opportunity to use his passion and skill in detective work when his ex-girlfriend, Rachel, goes missing. Doug enlists a ramshackle team of amateur sleuths and leads them down a complex trail of clues, coming ever closer to discovering the mysterious truth about Rachel. Cold Weather is good in so many subtle ways, I despair of doing them justice. Roger Ebert, The Chicago Sun Times Director Aaron Katz Cast Cris Lankenau, Trieste Kelly Dunn, Raul Castillo USA 2010, 1h36m, N/C 15+

The Portuguese Nun A Religiosa Portuguesa Monday 2 – Thursday 5 May Visionary French filmmaker Eugene Green’s luminous love letter to Lisbon has held critics spellbound. Julie, a French actress who has newly arrived in the city to act in an adaptation of a book of 17th-century love letters, soon finds life mirroring art. Embarking on a spiritual journey between shooting, she encounters a range of eccentric characters, from a suicidal count to a Portuguese nun, who lead her discover a new purpose in life. Entrancing, dream-like sequences merge with a lovely Fado score to create beguiling and exquisite cinema. Mesmeric, subtly comic and weirdly gripping, this drama set in gorgeous Lisbon is one of the year’s best. Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian Director Eugene Green Cast Leonor Baldaque, Francisco Mozos, Diogo Doria Portugal/France 2009, 2h7m, subtitles, N/C 15+

My Dog Tulip

Friday 13 – Sunday 22 May

A bittersweet account of J R Ackerley’s fourteen-year relationship with his adopted Alsatian, My Dog Tulip was written, directed and animated by award-winning filmmakers Paul and Sandra Fierlinger, and is the first animated feature ever to be entirely hand drawn and painted using paperless computer technology.

Jûsan-nin no shikaku Cult director Takashi Miike (Ichi the Killer, Audition) delivers a bravado period action film set at the end of Japan’s feudal era. In a bloody tale of politics and betrayal a group of unemployed samurai are enlisted to bring down a sadistic lord and prevent him from ascending to the throne and plunging the country into a wartorn future. This epic film climaxes in a magnificent forty-five-minute showdown, full of fiery explosions, showers of arrows and clashing swords, that is one of the most exciting battle sequences in recent cinema. Programme notes are available in the cinema and online at www.glasgowfilm.org Director Takashi Miike Cast Kôji Yakusho, Takayuki Yamada, Yûsuke Iseya Japan 2010, 2h4m, subtitles, 15

Friday 15 – Wednesday 18 May

Ackerley hardly thought of himself as a dog lover when, in middle age, he came to adopt Tulip – a beautiful, yet intolerable eighteen-month-old German shepherd. To his surprise, she turned out to be the love of his life, the ideal companion he had been searching for in vain. In vivid and sometimes startling detail, the film reveals Tulip’s often erratic behaviour, canine tastes, and Ackerley’s determined efforts to ensure an existence of perfect happiness for her. Very amusing and beautifully drawn… a treat for the dog lover and the dogless alike. Little White Lies Directors Paul & Sandra Fierlinger Voices Christopher Plummer, Lynn Redgrave, Isabella Rossellini USA 2009, 1h45m, CTBC

The Silent House

Julia’s Eyes

Sunday 15 – Thursday 19 May

Los ojos de Julia

Uruguayan director Hernandez’s brilliant debut sees Laura (Florencia Colucci) and her father (Abel Tripaldi) visit a friend’s remote house to do some renovation work. He leaves them with one instruction: not to go upstairs. When loud noises start to resonate from the upper floor, however, Laura forces her father to investigate – only for him to return bloodied and close to death. Alone in a locked house with only a torch Laura must survive a night of terror with an unseen, horrifying threat. Astonishingly shot in one take on an HD digital camera, The Silent House harks back to the best of the horror genre with thrilling suspense, nonstop tension and a remarkable twist. An audacious lesson in fear. Watershed

A woman investigates the death of her twin sister while slowly losing her sight in this tense Spanish thriller, produced by Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth). When Julia’s (The Orphanage’s Belén Rueda) twin sister is found hanging in the family basement, everyone assumes she committed suicide. Not convinced, Julia sets out to discover the true cause of her sister’s death. Suffering from a degenerative disease that will eventually leave her blind, she soon senses the sinister presence of an ‘invisible man’. Does he really exist or is he merely a distortion of her failing eyesight? Is he responsible for her sister’s death? This stylish throwback to the giallo era is genuinely shocking.

Director Gustavo Hernandez Cast Gustavo Alonso, Abel Tripaldi, Florencia Colucci Uruguay 2010, 1h26m, subtitles, 15

Director Guillem Morales Cast Belén Rueda, Lluís Homar, Pablo Derqui Spain 2010, 1h57m, subtitles, 15

Monday 23 – Thursday 26 May

This brilliant, nightmarish portrait of one man’s descent into hell is a landmark of 1970s American cinema. Robert De Niro plays Travis Bickle, a Vietnam vet cruising the New York City streets in his cab as a distraction from chronic insomnia. Although his attraction to political activist Betsy (Shepherd) hints at a normal life, Bickle’s disdain for the city and what he sees as its ‘scum’ soon overwhelms him. Becoming more alienated from the world, he develops a dangerous obsession with rescuing child prostitute (Foster) from her vicious pimp (Keitel). Paul Schrader’s groundbreaking screenplay combines with Scorcese’s sensual direction and De Niro’s deeply disturbing performance to create a modern classic which has lost none of its brutal power thirty-five years on. Director Martin Scorcese Cast Robert De Niro, Cybill Shepherd, Jodie Foster, Harvey Keitel USA 1976, 1h53m, 18

After losing their family home in Algeria, three brothers are scattered across the globe. Messaoud joins the French army fighting in Indochina; Abdelkader becomes a leader of the Algerian independence movement; Saïd moves to Paris to make his fortune in the shady clubs and boxing halls of Pigalle. Gradually, their interconnecting destinies reunite them in the French capital, where freedom is a battle to be fought and won. Director Rachid Bouchareb brings a still-burning sense of outrage to his powerful dramatisation of the Algerian struggle for independence. This historical drama is also a fast-paced action thriller, galvanized by a trio of committed and thoughtful performances. Director Rachid Bouchareb Cast Jamel Debbouze, Roschdy Zem, Sami Bouajila France 2010, 2h18m, subtitles, 15

Le Quattro Volte Friday 27 May – Thursday 2 June Hailed as a ‘genre defying work of cinematic transcendence’, Le Quattro Volte was one of the great discoveries of the last Cannes Film Festival. The eagerly awaited second feature from Michelangelo Frammartino is a spellbinding fusion of languidly beautiful imagery and bracing philosophical rumination. The circle of life lies at the heart of a film shot in the countryside of Calabria and focusing on an elderly shepherd who will eventually become a baby goat, a giant tree and a lump of coal as his soul undergoes a journey from human to animal, vegetable and mineral. A work of great originality and poise, Le Quattro Volte is also playful, tender and surprisingly poignant. Programme notes are available in the cinema and online at www.glasgowfilm.org Director Michelangelo Frammartino / Cast Giuseppe Fuda, Bruno Timpano Italy 2010, 1h28m, subtitles, N/C 8+

Angels of Evil

Vallanzasca – Gli angeli del male Friday 27 May – Thursday 9 June In recent years there have been biopics on infamous criminals the Baader Meinhof Gang, Carlos the Jackal and Mesrine. Now meet Renato Vallanzasca, scourge of the Italian police throughout the 1970s and 80s. A criminal by the age of nine, Vallanzasca grows up to become the country’s most notorious mobster, wresting control of the Milan underworld through a string of high-profile robberies, kidnappings and murders. His actions and devilish charm catch the attention of a celebrity-starved public while his many daring escapes from prison only serve to feed his legend. This exceptional crime epic is stylishly shot throughout, colour grading recreating the period perfectly, and features a phenomenal performance by Kim Rossi Stuart as the narcissistic and ruthless crime lord. Director Michele Placido Cast Kim Rossi Stuart, Filippo Timi, Paz Vega Italy 2010, 2h8m, subtitles, 15

Heartbeats Friday 27 May – Thursday 2 June Precociously talented and critically adored twenty-one-year-old director Xavier Dolan follows up his acclaimed I Killed My Mother (GFF 2010) with a stylish depiction of youthful obsession and bad romance. Best friends Marie and Francis are inseparable until they both fall for gorgeous new boy Nicolas. While they compete comically for his attention, sly Nico refuses to divulge where his sexual preferences lie. Another hit for Dolan at Cannes, Heartbeats is an amusing and tender portrayal of young people adapting to the constantly shifting rules of modern love. Director Xavier Dolan Cast Monia Chokri, Niels Schneider, Xavier Dolan Canada/France 2010, 1h40m, subtitles, 15

Vidal Sassoon Monday 30 May – Thursday 2 June Vidal Sassoon is more than just a hairdresser – he’s a rock star, an artist, a craftsman who ‘changed the world with a pair of scissors’. With the geometric, Bauhaus-inspired hairdos he pioneered in the 1960s and his ‘wash and wear’ philosophy that liberated generations of women from the tyranny of the salon, Sassoon revolutionised the art of hairstyling and left an indelible mark on popular culture. This fun, fast-paced documentary traces with visual gusto the life of a self-made man whose passion and perseverance took him from a Jewish orphanage in London to the absolute pinnacle of his craft, combining vintage footage and modernday conversations with family and colleagues and, of course, plenty of heartfelt reminiscences with the charismatic 81-year-old master himself. La Strada

Tuesday 3 May (20.00)

Tuesday 10 May (18.00)

Six actors (including Cate Blanchett, Heath Ledger and Richard Gere) represent different aspects and phases of Dylan’s career in this formally dazzling, unconventional biopic. The film sweeps aside conventional narrative and rejects the condensation of standard biopics.

The young Dylan spent hours in a Greenwich Village cinema devouring the cream of European cinema, including the films of Federico Fellini. La Strada is a bittersweet parable that made a star of Fellini’s wife and muse Giulietta Masina. Dylan would later cite the film as an influence for ‘Mr Tambourine Man’.

did you miss Benda Bilili!

Source Code

Friday 29 (14.00) & Saturday 30 April (18.30)

Sunday 1 – Tuesday 3 May

Leon Libaku is a man with an impossible dream. On the streets of Kinshasa, he managed to unite a group of homeless, disabled Congolese musicians who played both conventional and improvised instruments. As guitarist Coco Yakula observed, he made them believe that ‘one day we will be the most famous disabled men in Africa’. Leon was right and Benda Bilili! charts the long and winding road to securing a recording contract and finding global success. This infectious feel-good film takes its audience on a joyful journey.

Jake Gyllenhaal stars in this mind-bending thriller from visionary director Duncan Jones. Captain Colter Stevens (Gyllenhaal) awakes to find himself on a train, trapped in the body of a man he doesn’t know. When the train is suddenly destroyed in an explosion, Stevens is transported into a hi-tech laboratory where he discovers that he is part of government experiment ‘Source Code’ which enables him to cross over into another man’s identity. His mission is to find the terrorist who bombed the train and save Chicago from obliteration. Terrifically exciting and hugely enjoyable, Source Code is perfect entertainment.

Living in Emergency: Stories of Doctors without Borders

When We Leave

Tuesday 3 May (17.45)

Feo Aladag’s multi-award-winning When We Leave offers a heartbreaking melodrama on issues at the core of modern Europe. Sibel Kekilli gives an outstanding performance as Umay, a German-born Turkish woman who flees her abusive husband in Istanbul. She arrives at the family home in Berlin with her five-year-old son. Her family welcome her with love but it quickly becomes apparent that they cannot accept her rebellion or her refusal to submit to her fate. She has brought shame to the family, love turns to rejection and outright hostility as she is forced to defy them and make a new life as a free western woman.

For the first time ever, Médecins Sans Frontières has given a documentary crew uncensored access to its field operations. Filmed in war-torn Congo and post-conflict Liberia, Living in Emergency interweaves the stories of four doctors as they struggle to provide emergency medical care under extreme conditions. Amid the chaos, each doctor must find their own way to face the challenges of the work, the tough choices and the limits of their idealism. A panel of Médecins Sans Frontières staff will participate in a Q&A session after the film. Director Mark Hopkins / USA 2008, 1h33m, some subtitles, 15

Viva Mexico Sunday 8 May (17.15) In January 2006, thousands of indigenous Zapatistas say farewell to their spokesman Subcomandante Marcos. His mission: to trace the face of the ‘other’ Mexico, a face very different to the one portrayed on TV. By uncovering Mexico’s dignified and rebellious face, this journey is a provocation against those who control the country’s economy and its image. What starts as an isolated murmur will become a clamour of hundreds of thousands of voices. How will those in power respond? Director Nicolás Défossé will introduce and participate in a Q&A after the film. Director Nicolás Défossé / Mexico 2010, 1h59m, subtitles, N/C 15+

The Big Uneasy

GasLand

Friday 20 May (17.45)

Saturday 21 May (13.00)

Comic genius Harry Shearer is universally recognised as Derek Smalls from Spinal Tap and as the voices of Ned Flanders, Mr Burns and countless others in The Simpsons. In The Big Uneasy he brings a dry wit and a keen journalist’s instinct to a post-mortem on why New Orleans was so ill-prepared for Hurricane Katrina and why the storm left such a stain of shame on the country. The scale of the flood is shown in jaw-dropping detail before Shearer investigates why the devastation was so widespread and why the Corps of Engineers proved so incompetent for the challenge they faced. A smart, well-argued critique of one of the most shameful moments in recent American history.

The largest domestic natural gas drilling boom in history has swept across the United States. The Halliburton-developed drilling technology of ‘fracking’ or hydraulic fracturing has unlocked a ‘Saudia Arabia of natural gas’ just beneath the earth. But is fracking safe? When filmmaker Josh Fox is asked to lease his land for drilling, he embarks on a cross-country odyssey uncovering a trail of secrets, lies and contamination. A recently drilled nearby Pennsylvania town reports that residents are able to light their drinking water on fire. This is just one of the many absurd and astonishing revelations of a new country called GasLand. Part verité travelogue, part expose, part mystery, part bluegrass banjo meltdown and part showdown!

We hope that Harry Shearer will take part in a Q&A via Skype following the screening. Ticket holders are invited to drinks in Cafe Cosmo after the screening, courtesy of West Brewery. Director Harry Shearer USA 2010, 1h38m, N/C 12+

With Landscape in Mind

Transition in Scotland

Saturday 21 May (15.30)

Saturday 21 May (17.00)

With Landscape in Mind documents landscape photographer Joe Cornish’s journey from coast to coast across the north of England – tracing a path from the industrial mouth of the river Tees, across the stark and beautiful limestone scenery of the Yorkshire Dales, to the Lake District, arguably England’s most romantic and spectacular landscape, revealing the photographer’s aesthetic and physical challenges in this upland landscape along the way. The film is a perfect combination of technical instruction and inspiration making it a ‘must see’ for all photographers and also for those who simply love to be in the great outdoors.

Folk down the road are changing the world... and these short films show how. Groups across Scotland are considering the challenges that climate change, peak oil and an uncertain economy are presenting. They’re taking positive action to overcome these challenges using a community framework called Transition. This is a celebration of three year’s work in Scotland, a display of common concern and an invitation to you to find out what Transition’s all about. The films will be introduced by Emily Watts of Transition in Scotland.

Plastic Planet Saturday 21 May (18.00) Like a more charming Teutonic version of Michael Moore, Werner Boote presents an up-close and personal view of the controversial and fascinating material that has found its way into every facet of our daily lives: plastic. Planeat

The Pipe

Saturday 21 May (20.15)

Sunday 22 May (12.45)

A provocative challenge to our love of meat and dairy. By tracking the work of scientists, doctors and environmentalists, Planeat forces us to confront the evidence that a heavily animal-based diet is bad for our health, the environment and the future of the planet. The film features the groundbreaking work of Dr T Colin Campbell in China who is exploring the link between diet and disease, and Professor Gidon Eshel’s investigations into how our food choices contribute to global warming, land use and oceanic deadzones. With the help of some innovative chefs and farmers, the filmmakers begin a discussion on how the problems we face today can be solved, without simply resorting to a diet of lentils and lettuce leaves.

When it was discovered that there was a reserve of 11 trillion cubic feet of natural gas 80km off the west coast of Ireland, a consortium led by Shell developed plans to lay a pipeline into County Mayo, through the village of Rossport. Without having been consulted in the planning process, the small farming and fishing community objected, fearing the risk of environmental damage, and understandably keen to protect their land, fishing grounds and, indeed, their very way of life. Risteard Ó Domhnaill’s compelling, moving film followed the campaign against Shell over four years… The Pipe serves as a stirring tribute to the brave men and women fighting for their rights, and standing up to a corporate giant. The Great White Silence Sunday 22 (15.15) & Tuesday 24 May (12.45) A hundred years ago the British Antarctic Expedition led by Captain Scott set out on its ill-fated race to the South Pole. Joining Scott on board the Terra Nova was official photographer and cinematographer Herbert Ponting, and the images that he captured have fired imaginations ever since. Ponting filmed almost every aspect of the expedition: the scientific work, life in camp and the local wildlife – including the characterful Adélie penguins. Those things he was unable to film he boldly recreated back home. The BFI National Archive has now restored Ponting’s resulting feature length film using the latest techniques, reintroducing its sophisticated use of colour. The alien beauty of the landscape is brought dramatically to life and shows the world of the expedition in brilliant detail. Director Herbert G Ponting / UK 1924, 1h48m, U

Léon

Goodfellas

Friday 13 May (23.00)

Friday 27 May (23.00)

After her family are murdered, Mathilda (Portman) is reluctantly taken in by her neighbour Léon (Reno), a professional assassin. Swearing vengeance, she asks Léon to train her as a ‘cleaner’ so she can avenge the death of her little brother. Heralding Luc Besson’s American debut, the controversial Léon features a bonkers performance by Gary Oldman as a corrupt policeman and introduced audiences to Natalie Portman (Black Swan) as an adorable contract killer.

An epic tale of gangsters and their violent yet glamorous lifestyles. Punk kid Henry (Liotta) progresses from the mean streets of Brooklyn to committing airport robberies and extortion, until it goes horribly wrong… Arguably Scorsese’s finest hour, Goodfellas made a star of Joe Pesci as the psychotic Tommy and influenced a wave of ‘90s directors like Quentin Tarantino and Paul Thomas Anderson.
