Philomena

Friday 1 – Thursday 21 November Inspired by an incredible true story, Philomena charts the journey of Philomena Lee (Judi Dench) as she is helped by cynical political journalist Martin Sixsmith (Steve Coogan) to search for the son who was removed from her care some fifty years earlier. After falling pregnant as a teenager in Ireland in 1952, Philomena was sent to a convent as a ‘fallen woman’, and lost her baby to adoption. Winner of Best Screenplay at Venice, this heartfelt narrative of love and loss is ultimately a celebration of life in all its unpredictability. Not until 1941 did the director earn belated fame and respect – proof that this genre-defying documentary was far ahead of its time. This screening will be accompanied by a specially-commissioned live score, written and performed by composer and musician Verity Susman of Electrelane. £13 full price / £10 concession / £8 CineCard Director Benjamin Christensen / Cast Maren Pedersen, Clara Pontoppidan, Elith Pio Sweden 1922, 1h54m, 15

Introduced by Andy Dougan, lecturer in the Screen Department of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, whose book Raising the Dead uncovers the Glasgow-based facts behind Shelley’s fiction. Thank You to our audiences

Many thanks to the thousands of GFT patrons who continue to stay with us while we carry out the major refurbishment of our entrance canopy, foyer and the creation of Cinema 3. The new screen will open in early December and we’re delighted to invite you to an Open Day so you can hear more about it on Sunday 8 December (see details below). The increase in screens will enable more flexibility in programming and space for our award-winning youth group to develop their activities year-round. The original upstairs bar is now back in action thanks to an upgrade in sound-proofing and there’s a new refreshment kiosk on the ground floor. The next phase of this development, which we’re currently fundraising for, will include returning the main stairway to its former glory, lift access to public and staff areas, and an upgrade of our Learning Room. The project was designed by NORD Architecture and our Project Manager was Harry Wood of tx-2 Project Management + Design. The development was carried out with support from Glasgow City Council, Creative Scotland, The Robertson Trust and the Garfield Weston Foundation. The project is also supported by members of the public, with individual donors subscribing to the seat sponsorship scheme (all of our Seat Sponsors are warmly acknowledged on p42). Jaki McDougall Chief Executive, Glasgow Film (GFT and Glasgow Film Festival)

GFT Open Day

Sunday 8 December (12 noon – 16.00 approx) For one day only, GFT welcomes you to take a sneak peek behind the scenes of one of the UK’s leading independent film theatres. Come and explore our cinema’s past, present and future – there will be guided tours of the projection booth at 12noon, 12.20 and 12.40 (first come, first served) and the chance to check out our all-new Cinema 3. At 13.00, you’re invited to join the Glasgow Film team for a panel discussion, followed by a free screening of a surprise film!
