Hello So. You’ve arrived. Whether you’ve travelled a great distance and finished unpacking your mugs in halls or you’ve simply jumped on the train for 20 minutes to get here from your house, Freshers’ week is about to begin for you. While you’ve been imagining it all summer, so have a squad of enthusiastic helpers who’ve been there, done that, and now they’re literally wearing the t-shirt. Glasgow Uni is different in that there are four student bodies (GUSA, GUU, QMU and SRC) in charge of giving you “more than a degree” during your time here and, due to the inevitable good-natured rivalry between them, Freshers’ Week often turns into a bit of a battleground as they try to persuade you that their ‘unmissable’ event is just that, in the hope that you’ll become a regular at their gaff over the next few years. In this guide, we’ve picked out a few highlights for two reasons: to help you navigate the overwhelming number of events they’ve put on for you, but also to show you that, ok, while there’s not necessarily something for everyone - we don’t want a court case on our hands - there’s a very, very good chance that you’ll get your kicks out of at least a few things on offer. There’ll be some people who don’t need a guidebook. You’ll know the type: they’re already captain of the skydiving team and appear to be loving every minute of, well, everything. Kudos to them. But, if you’re feeling a little more adrift, that’s ok too. Follow your instincts, try to break out of your comfort zone a little and you’ll soon find yourself surrounded by like-minded people - fun acquaintances, but also future friends for life. You only get one Freshers’ Week, go make the most of it.
Help
Each of the four student bodies that run Freshers’ Week have their own teams of helpers. The Freshers’ Helpers are the best people to ask about what’s on, where to get lunch and the best way to get back home.
The SRC (Students’ Representative Council) are the crew to ask about things like Freshers’ Fair, Campus Tours, the buses, Student Media and all events in the Quadrangles and Main Building. Their events are happening all over the place but the Welcome Point in the John McIntyre Building is the first port of call for info on anything SRC related. The QMU (Queen Margaret Union) are the people behind all the events in Qudos, Champion’s & Jim’s Bar. Ask them about Scott Mills, Freshers’ Ball, qmunicate and Snap Crackle and Pop. Their base is the angular 1960s concrete building sitting at the end of University Gardens.
GUSA (Glasgow University Sports Association) are unsurprisingly the team to chat to about all things sport. Ask one of their pink clad members about joining a sports club, sport taster sessions and their big party in the GUU Debates Chamber. Their HQ is the Stevie (Stevenson Building) on Oakfield Avenue (the one with the swimming pool). The GUU (Glasgow University Union) helpers are the folk putting on We Were Promised Jetpacks, Jameela Jamil, BADGE and Iron Stomach. Their gaff is the grand old stone building with the turrets at the bottom of University Avenue near Gibson Street.
All events are fully accessible. However, should you want any further information about the accessibility of any event, feel free to contact Louise Graham at vp-support@src.gla.ac.uk

Freshers’ Address
Bute Hall
.
Pomp and ceremony abound at the official start to Freshers’ Week 2013. Head along to the majestic Bute Hall in the main building to catch speeches from Rector Charles Kennedy, Vice-Principal John Briggs, Chaplain Stuart McQuarrie and the presidents of all four student bodies; all in their full ceremonial academic robes. Don’t expect a quiet, reserved affair – helpers from all four unions will be seated around the hall trying their best to prove who can shout the loudest. Get down early if you want a seat as it reaches capacity every year. Bute Hall, Main Building, Monday 1200-1330

Big All Day Games Event
What better way to acquaint yourself with the beautiful conservation area that is the West End of Glasgow than through the grills of a shopping trolley, rocketing down a hill at high speed? Somewhere between a low budget TV gameshow and school sports day, BADGE sees teams take on various challenges from the aforementioned trolley racing to scavenger hunts, endurance eating and water ballooning the GUU helpers - a brilliantly reckless combination if ever there was one. For those of you exhausted just reading that, don’t be fooled by the title: this “all day” games event runs from 3pm-8pm, so there’s plenty of time for a lie-in after the night before. Debates Chamber, GUU, Tuesday 1500-2000

Sports Fair
Activity hall
Like the Freshers’ Fair, but for sports clubs. And, with 48 clubs on show, all the same rules apply: give yourself time to browse as many as you can, and subscribe to anything that vaguely appeals. The range is impressive; from badminton to potholing to shinty to ultimate frisbee… After university, you probably won’t have the time or the support to do many of these things without paying a fair bit of money so make the most of it. Although, of course, just because you’ve signed up to the mailing list doesn’t mean you’ll be obliged to spend your Saturday mornings on a freezing rugby pitch for the rest of the year if you decide you don’t quite fancy it after all. Activity Hall, Stevenson Tuesday 1000-1700, Wednesday 1000-1600

Around The Word in One Night
Marquee
Glasgow is a diverse institution, with students from all corners of the globe. This is a chance to sample some of the exotic cultures and traditions that are represented. There’ll be stalls from a range of national clubs including the Hungarian, Gaelic, American and Pakistani societies. As well as food and drink being on display, there will be performances from Gaelic musicians, a Hungarian dance group, capoeira dancers and the Cuban and Cross body “Salsa 4 Water.” Marquee, Quadrangles, Thursday 1900-2200

Wee Ones in the Williams Room
Student parents are invited to meet other parents and let their bambinos play with the University of Glasgow Nursery staff in the Williams Room. There’ll be a host of games, arts and crafts for the little ones and the big ones can relax over a cup of tea and a slice (or two) of cake. This is a great opportunity for parents to socialise and let the kids run wild for a few hours. Williams Room, John McIntyre, Friday 1400-1600

Scott Mills + That Drummer, That DJ
Freshers’ Week wouldn’t be complete without a high-energy DJ set from a BBC Radio 1 presenter, this year you’re spoiled with three of them making the trip up to play over the week. Opening the week for the QMU is cheeky-chappy Scott Mills. He’ll be supplying a fast paced blend of current chart toppers and guilty pleasures whilst hyping the Qudos crowd on the mic. Support comes from Glasgow act ‘That Drummer, That DJ’ who’s energetic performances sees them reimagine well known hits from across several genres using, you’ve guessed it, a set of decks and a drum kit. We Were Promised JetPacks
The opening night of Freshers’ Week down at the GUU is a two part bill, headlined by T4 presenter and Radio 1 Chart Show host Jameela Jamil who’ll be getting the Debates Chamber bumping til the early hours to an old school RnB driven set. Expect R-Kelly, Destiny’s Child, Snoop and Pharell. Before that, the evening kicks off with live music including a set from the Edinburgh-born, Glasgowraised We Were Promised Jetpacks. Think Twilight Sad meets Frightened Rabbit with the energy of Biffy Clyro’s earlier material thrown in. Tracks like “This is My House” and “Moving Clocks,” from their debut album ‘These Four Walls” have become anthems in their own right so brush up on the lyrics and sing along. Varsity Party with ministry of sound
GUU
Deep down, a lot of freshers probably wish that their University experience was going to be like something out of Van Wilder Party Liaison. While in reality this is image is a creation of the silver screen, the GUU are helping you live the American Dream for one night only at their Varsity Party. Fill your red cup from one of the kegs of beer, destroy a foot-long hot dog and take part in a host of games including flip cup and beer pong. Ministry of Sound DJs will then be rounding off the night in the Debates Chamber with a healthy dose of EDM - which these days is actually as American as apple pie. . GUU, Tuesday 2100-0200

Despite the long acronym, the GULGBTQ+ (that’s: Glasgow University Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender and Queer pluss) Students’ Association is pretty easy to grasp in terms of what it offers under its wide banner: enviable social events and an invaluable source of welfare and support.
. .
Whether you strode out of the closet when you were eight, or whether you’re a bit more tentative and just want to gently check out the scene, the Drop-in Tea is a relaxed opportunity to meet some friendly faces from the organisation, as well as potential new members, over a cup of tea. GUSA Space Party
QMU
A night of unmatched sophistication among the Freshers’ programme and a chance for you to dig out your snazziest outfit. Guests will be treated to a free Mojito cocktail before dancing the evening away to DJ Toast and live ska rock act ‘Victorian Trout Conspiracy’ in Qudos which will be transformed into an opulent palace. The Food Factory will also undergo a make-over to house a casino with blackjack and roulette on offer. And if this all sounds a bit much, you can always retreat to Champion’s bar in your hoodie and jeans. QMU, Thursday 2000-0200
Apart from looking after the University’s 48 sports clubs, one thing GUSA wins at is throwing it’s annual Freshers’ fancy dress party. This year, GUSA helpers will be channelling their energy into transforming the Debates Chamber of the GUU into an out of this world, extraterrestrial treat. This will be the first year where they’ll also be hosting pre-party games downstairs in the GUU Dining Hall. Dress up and get ready to boldly go where no fresher has gone before. PRO TIPS
Campus Tours
Memorial Gate
Essential if you don’t want to be walking about with your nose in a map for the next month. The SRC’s guides give some historical background to the campus whilst imparting insider knowledge, from the useful to the fun - short cuts, where to get a decent coffee before 9am, which toilets have the funniest graffiti... Leaving from Memorial Gate Monday - Friday 1300, 1400 & 1500

International cèilidh
If there were ever an excuse to employ the term “knees-up”, it has to be this. With as many different spellings as there are dances, a cèilidh (pronounced kay-lee) is a Scottish tradition predating even Tunnocks teacakes.
.
Clubs & Societies
Freshers’ Fair
It involves flying around a room on the arms of multiple red-faced people dressed in tartan (optional) emitting the occasional good willed cheer. It doesn’t matter if you don’t know the moves - picking them up along the way, or spectacularly failing to, is part of the fun. There’s no room to be shy and by the end everyone will be spinning around doing the Gay Gordens like the best of them. And if you are new to the country, it’s a fantastic opportunity to learn a part of Scottish culture as well as meet new people who are in the same boat as you are. Marquee, Quadrangles, Wednesday 1900-2200

Comedy
Bute Hall
Following the excesses of the opening night of Freshers’ Week, the temptation might be to head down to this just before it finishes, grab some free pizza on the way in, fill a goodie bag then head to one of the unions to dissect the contents over a hard earned pint/coffee. Bear in mind that everyone else will have had the same idea. Make an effort to be the early bird, and the Freshers’ Fair is one of the week’s most rewarding pleasures, leisurely browsing the myriad of specialised student societies out there - ranging from ethical campaigning groups and academic groups to people who just like whisky. If you want to meet people who share an interest or hobby rather than simply the people you live with, joining a club or society is the best place to start and Freshers Fair is the place to do it, free pizza in hand. Carl Donnelly + Peacock & Gamble hosted by Naz Osmanoglu
A night of award winning, BBC featured comedy fresh from the Edinburgh Fringe. Carl Donnelly is a familiar face from TV shows like Mock the Week and Russell Howard’s Good News known for a effortlessly natural anecdotal style founded in brutal self-depreciation. His Fringe show was nominated for the Foster’s Edinburgh Comedy Award this year. If their 2012 Fringe show was to be believed, the night’s other main act Peacock & Gamble “Don’t Even Want To Be On Telly Anyway”, but “after inexplicably failing to get famous in the UK for three years” they’ve apparently found fame in Japan. Their current show Heart-throbs deals with this change in fortunes via the duo’s unique postmodern take on the traditional double act. Debates Chamber, GUU, Tuesday 2000-2200

Headphone Disco
Qudos
If you’ve had enough of dancing like an idiot to whatever the unions can throw at you during Freshers’ Week, then prepare to be empowered. The QMU’s Headphone Disco puts you in charge of the music you dance like an idiot to. Choose between a pair of DJs competing for your attention, or lose the music altogether and choose to indulge in some of the most unusual people watching you’ll ever encounter. If you thought there was nothing more bizarre than a group of otherwise respectable adults doing the YMCA, then you’ve never seen a group of otherwise respectable adults doing the YMCA in complete silence whilst everyone else nods along to some inaudible dubstep. In the future they’ll look back and scratch their heads at all this. Qudos, QMU, Wednesday 2100-0200

King Charles (live), Hot Dub Time Machine + The Maccabees (DJ sets)
Critically lauded musician and award winning songwriter King Charles (pictured) brings his unique brand of psychadelic acoustica to the Qudos stage on Tuesday. Support comes from rock and electronica act Finding Albert and winners of Glasgow Uni’s Got Talent, Paper Crowns. The second half of the night sees the guitars packed away and the decks rolled out for two big DJ sets. First up is Aussie comedian Tom Loud whose critically acclaimed time-travel themed show has just finished a sell-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe. It’s one tune for every year between 1954 and 2013 whilst the big screen keeps the time-travel narrative going. Closing the evening are the Maccabees, who’ll be unwinding from their headline slots at Latitude and Rockness by selecting tracks for the dancefloor, which by the time this is all done will likely need resurfacing. Freshers’ Week Debate
The GUU has a rich debating history and their annual Freshers’ Week debate tends to provide some welcome intellectual relief at the end of a party-filled calendar of events. That said, it is always a lively affair with a lot of audience participation. Those who think that debating is a stuffy, well-mannered pursuit can look forward to an instant re-education. This year, the house debates the hot topic of lads’ mags and whether or not they should be banned. Speakers include: pro lads’ mag glamour model Laura Lacole; Gareth Bennell, who recently implemented a “modesty bag” policy for such magazines for the Co-op; and founder of campaign group No More Page 3, Lucy Holmes. Stereo
Glasgow uni’s radio station has stong ties to the city’s famous club scene going back 20 years and its own reputation as party host is up there with the best in the city. They’re starting the year with Subcity X, a 2 floor music and visual extravaganza at city centre nightclub Stereo that is free for freshers pass holders and £5 for those without. DJs from the station such as Offbeat and Work for Love will be pitted against select Glasgow clubbing stalwarts including Jonnie Wilkes (Optimo), Nightwave and Shaun Vitamins. There’ll also be a multisensory installation to heighten the experience. Expect a more diverse, less commercial selection of proper club music and an atmosphere different to most other fresher-focused parties around. A great introduction to one of the most lively scenes in the UK right now. Stereo, Renfield Lane (Subway: Buchanan St), over 18s only, Wednesday 2300-0300

Snap, Crackle & Pop: UV Paint Party
Qudos
DJ Toast has been at the controls of the QMU’s Friday nights for a long time, the night turns 20 this year and as such it, and its host, are something of a Glasgow Uni institution. As well as providing the usual skilled selection of guilty pleasures and forgotten classics, for this Freshers’ Week special he’ll be overseeing the unleashing of gallons of UV paint onto the crowd. The paint is water soluble but it’s probably not a great idea to wear the tuxedo from the Freshers’ Ball the night before. You can also get your hands on one of 500 QMU wayfarer sunglasses if you get there early enough - although perhaps an umbrella would be of more use to see you through the Glasgow winter. Qudos, QMU, Friday 2000-0200

Scottish Day
GUU
If you want a taste of what makes Scots tick, then the GUU’s Scottish themed events throughout Thursday should do the trick. Sample some of the national drink at free whisky tasting sessions before moving to the Bridie Library to meet Scottish crime novelist Louise Welch and Alan Riach, poet and professor of Scottish Literature at the University. Of course no evening of Scottish entertainment would be complete without a cèilidh, so join the other bonnie lads and lasses in some traditional Scottish country dancing – imagine a room full of people out of breath from spinning their partners round and round and round. Rounding off the night will be Hostage, the Scottish DJ who following releases on Black Butter & Deep Thrills, has taken his fusion of dubstep, techno and electro-bass to festivals such as Glastonbury and Rockness this year. Club Sports Taster Sessions

If you’re into sport, watching demonstrations and getting handfuls of multi-coloured leaflets may sound a bit tame to you. Fear not - all 48 GUSA clubs are offering taster sessions where you can get seriously stuck in. Perfect for trying something new or getting you back into the swing of an existing hobby. All abilities are welcome, and no previous experience is needed. The times of the individual sessions are included in the timetables at the back of this guide, but the off-campus locations (from the picturesque Bardowie Loch to the not-so-picturesque Scotstoun Leisure Centre) are dotted all over the place and you’ll need to get on one of the free buses out there. Pick up the Freshers’ Week Sports Programme, visit gla.ac.uk/sport or chat to a GUSA helper to find out more. If you’re laughing to yourself just now, thinking ‘this is easy’, then why not round up your new flatmates and take them to the Big Wednesday Quiz to show off your knowledge and see what they know as well.
.
It’s held in Qudos, which is pretty big as far a pub quiz venues go so the competition will be fierce. £150 is included in the assortment of prizes up for grabs. Imagine the damage you could do at the poster fair with that. Qudos, QMU, Wednesday 1800-2100

Clubs and Societies Showcase
Qudos
Getting involved in a club or society is going to give you a much more rounded University experience. First of all, it’s a perfect opportunity to meet like minded people who share a passion for an equally off the wall subject as yourself and secondly it’s a good way to pick up useful (and employable) skills. Freshers’ Fair is a good opportunity to talk to societies but for a less hectic setting and a chance to see demonstrations and performances from a selection societies this showcase is the one. Beer Bar
A GUU tradition that’s been going for decades, where a group of brave souls take the sport of endurance eating to a gross new level. With past delicacies in the early rounds including cake laced with seafood, and jelly studded with olives and gherkins, you may be wondering why anyone would put themselves through ten escalating rounds of this stomach punishing endurance test - until you find out there’s an Xbox up for grabs.
.
The Beer Bar is usually bursting with a raucous crowd cheering on the bare-chested contestants as they force down the next delicacy. As one of the only events you’ll ever attend in which vomit is a key feature, a bit of advice: don’t go hungover and stand well back. Beer Bar, GUU, Friday 1900-2200
