THE KINGDOM OF CRYSTAL Swedish glass is a success story that started in the deep forests of Småland hundreds of years ago. For centuries skilful craftsmen have turned sand, soda and chalk to sparkling glass in the heat of the furnaces. Kosta Glasbruk was founded in 1742 and there German masters blew exquisite chandeliers inspired by Bohemian and Venetian versions. The fact that Småland became a stronghold for the art of glass had several reasons. This you can read more about on the next spread.

During the years blossoming times have alternated with times of crisis for the glass industry. The fact that we live in ever changing times is not a secret, but our strong glass culture still stands, with both large and small glassworks and there is a strong trust in the future. From change new ways and forms emerge and you as our visitors will meet a Kingdom of Crystal that is blossoming with artistry and imagination. Here large industries co-exist with small scale glassworks. We have a fantastic cultural treasure telling us about the success as well as hardships we have experienced and endured. All of this in the middle of the beautiful Småland nature, that harbours elements from both the mysticism of John Bauer and the idyllic Astrid Lindgren landscape. Here the wings of history and the contemporary treasure of glass art live side by side. Welcome to discover it.

THE ORIGIN OF THE KINGDOM OF CRYSTAL It might seem a like coincidence that this this specific area in the southern part of Sweden became the home of glass, but it is not. Here you can actually find all the unique conditions that made it happen.

Traveling through southern Sm책land you see one of our great assets: mile after mile of fir and pine. Along the ride openings in the forest reveal glittering lakes and streams, which are also plenty in the Kingdom of Crystal. Together, trees and water gave the perfect conditions for a glass kingdom. Firewood kept the furnaces burning, hydropower ran the grinding mills and the sand from the lake floors was melted into glass. Apart from that, there was a lot of labor
in this part of the country and from mid18th century the Swedish glassblowing industry was concentrated to the south east part of Sm책land. The beginning of what was later to become the Kingdom of Crystal was the founding of Kosta Boda in 1742. By the end of the 19th century there was as many as 77 glassworks in what we now call the Kingdom of Crystal. In the year of 1919 the artist Simon Gate entered Orrefors and he came to revolutionize glass designing by establishing a
close cooperation between the designers and the glassblowers. A cooperation that later on laid the foundation for the enormous success of glassworks from Sm책land and its position as world leading in glass craftsmanship and excellent design. To this day glass of absolute world class is made here in the Kingdom of Crystal and it is possible to visit larger as well as smaller glassworks, and se molten glowing mass turn into beautiful objects.

THE GLASS AND THE ENVIRONMENT Today, environmental awareness is an important part of the Kingdom of Crystal, but there was a time when substances which we now know to be hazardous was a part of the process in making glass. Unfortunately a lot of heavy metals ended up in the surroundings of the glassworks, but today there are a number of different projects and initiatives that are aimed at cleaning up the soil around the glassworks.
6 | GLASRIKET 2016
In the old days a number of heavy metals were used in the making of glass. Similar to other industrial production plants, the waste that was generated was often deposited around the glassworks. As the years passed the poisonous substances leached from the waste and was spread in nature. Today, many areas in the Kingdom of Crystal is in need of decontamination. A joint project is now taking place between Glafo, the Glass Research Institute, the county administrative boards, the municipalities of the Kingdom of Crystal and M책ler책s Glasbruk,

representing the glass industry. The project mission is to develop techniques that enable deposited crystal to be separated from led, arsenic and antimony and then re-used as rawmaterial for glass and then turned into new products. The metals can later be sold. Since waste is turned into a useful resource, the costs can fully or partly be covered by selling the metals and the purified glass. During the autumn of 2015 a pre-study about a future phyto park in Boda was started. Plants will be planted with the purpose of freeing the soil from
contamination at the same time as creating an exciting and aesthetically pleasing environment. Plants as for example thrift, sunflower, brown oat and rapeseed will grow – plants especially good at purifying soil from led, arsenic and cadmium. The project is led by the municipality of Emmaboda, Linnaeus University and The Glass Factory.
contaminated soil will be bulldozed, gathered and removed for safe deposit. The project will run during 2016 and 2017 and emanate in yet another glasswork area being cleansed.
Latest in the row of projects is the area around Pukeberg. Earlier this year the Environmental Protection Agency decided to grant 58 million Swedish crowns to the municipality of Nybro for ground sanitation. Glass waste and

CUTTING EDGE TEAMWORK Together they have almost one hundred years of experience in working with glass – Bertil Vallien of design and Anders Nylander of ground glass. Their cooperation starts with a piece of red chalk when they decide which parts of the sculpture should be ground and leads up to the artworks known and admired all around the world. Bertil Vallien welcomes us to his studio and shows a sketch of a boat that has been ordered. When it is done it will be three metres long and incredibly detailed – the most advanced boat Bertil has ever made. It will take a lot of time. And one of the world’s most skilled grinders. Bertil has worked together with Anders Nylander for almost four years. ”Here in Kosta we have the best grinders in the world and Anders is one of them. Their skilfulness has opened new doors when it comes to use ground glass as part of the sculpture and it is a privilege to work with them.” Anders was taught in Orrefors, where he worked for 41 years before coming to Kosta in 2012. ”My main work there was with stemware decor and here in Kosta I have had the opportunity to work quite a lot with Bertil”, says Anders. ”We are a good team”, concludes Bertil. ”The only conflicts we have are about Anders being so very meticulous. But on the other hand that is a good thing, since I am so sloppy”, he admits. Anders nods. ”That is true. Sometimes we do not fully agree on how much of the rough surface that should be ground. But at the same time Bertil knows his work and when I see them on exhibitions, in the right environment and with the right lighting, I see things which are not obvious under the fluorescent lights in the ground room. It is a privilege to have the chance to work with Bertil’s sculptures.” We talk about ground glass and different techniques and Anders mentions a work he did in Orrefors. ”It was a chandelier which had been ordered by Saddam Hussein. We worked twelve hour shifts for almost four months. It was hard, but the result was a magnificent chandelier”, says Anders. ”Just as I said”, smiles Bertil. ”The best grinders in the world.”

RETRO If you like retro stuff and high quality antiques you are in the right place. In the Kingdom of Crystal you cannot drive many kilometers without seeing at least one homemade sign pointing towards a narrow dirt road or a red painted barn: Loppis, which is the Swedish word for flea market. And there is a big chance of making a bargain or two. The quality is consistently high in the flea markets which are filled with both fun and unusual things. The gems are plenty and the search could keep you busy for days. During the summer months the flea markets extend their opening hours, but during the rest of the year it is primarily the weekend that is the high point for the retro lovers. It is always good to call ahead and check the opening hours before heading out on a flea market tour.
Longing for peace and quiet turned into quality flea market After spending several years on Österlen, Per-Arne Johansson and Magdalena Vidal decided to move north to Småland. The peace, the forest and the low house prices were appealing and within five years they had bought four properties, all filled with furniture and things. What to do? “A summer flea market!” Per-Arne and Magdalena laughs. A suit able facility was found in the old carpentry by the latest purchased house in Fagerhult, between Lessebo and Kosta. “But the stuff was so much better than what can usually be found in yard sales”, tells Magdalena. To emphasize this, they named the flea market Loppis de Luxe. However, already in the first year the opening hours of the summer flea market were extended and it soon turned into an all-year-around flea market. And suitably enough the century old house contained a former county store. “The best part was meeting so many nice people, often out on a tour of the glassworks”, says Magdalena and Per-Arne, who in addition has made new friends. Now, two years later, the flea market has turned into the company Stuff & Mind, which only deals with carefully selected objects – quality things, designed furniture or simply things with a lot of soul. 12 | GLASRIKET 2016

ONE OF A KIND When Micke Johansson started his own glassworks next to his home just outside of Örsjö, his objective was to pursue creativity and complete freedom. Today, he is the only one blowing double ariels, a technique demanding patience, skill – and focus. The ariel technique was developed during the 1930s by artist Edvin Öhrström together with skilled glassblowers at Orrefors and is a further development of the graal technique. The name Ariel refers to the air spirit Ariel in the Shakespeare play The Storm and the technique means a controlled air pattern is built into the glass. This is then etched in several different steps by alternating cold and warm glass. Micke has succeeded in doing this twice and he is the only one in the world who has managed to do so. “From beginning to end the process takes about three weeks – plus 27 years, if you consider the time it took to become skillful enough to succeed.” “There are many steps where something can go wrong and since it is glass there is also the risk of breakage. But that is part of the charm. If it was simple, anyone could do it.” Micke opened his glassworks, Mickejohans Konstglas, by his home close Örsjö in 2011. “After fifteen years in Orrefors and another four in Pukeberg, it felt right to do something on my own. Now my designs take about 60 percent of my time and the remaining 40 percent I work with orders from artists and companies. I want to bring the craftsmanship forward, it is important that these old techniques remain.” On the question how he perceives the future he smiles and says: “I am doing great here and I’m enjoying life. Small glassworks are the future.”

ART AND FREEDOM In the beautiful glassworks by Lyckeby River the internationally acclaimed masters Jan-Erik Ritzman and SvenÅke Carlsson have lodged since they left Kosta and started working on their own business. For thirty years they have here stretched the limits for what is possible to create with glass.
“We had a lot of ideas and wanted to create our own designs, that was the driving force for us”, says Jan-Erik. “After working in Kosta for a long time, I started to teach glassblowing in the United States where a lot of small studios had emerged during the 60s. When I got back to Sweden I started to think about why we did not have that here.” While Sven-Åke was working at Kosta together with Jan-Erik they started planing their own glasswork. In 1982 they acted on it. Their vision was a “glass laboratory” where there also would be room for cooperation with guest artists and students. “Being able to work here gives us freedom”, tells Sven-Åke. “We blow without sketches and experiment our way forward, this is how we develop our designs and technique. Through the years we have worked with many of the icons within design and we feel we are constantly evolving”.

MODERN CLASSICS Carina Seth Andersson is known for her beautiful glass and clean designs, and maybe mainly for the gorgeous vases Pallo and Dagg. They are produced at Skrufs Glasbruk and the fact that they are made in Skruv is no coincidence. “The knowledge can be found here, in the Kingdom of Crystal”, says Carina. A few years ago Carina was invited to participate in the exhibition The Glass Elephant in the rock shelter at Skeppsholmen, there she made the sketches for the Pallo vase. The inspiration came from damejeannes, huge bottles which in the old days was used for brewing wine, but also can be used for cultivating micro ecosystem. “The vases were produced for this purpose at Skrufs Glasbruk and created from fantastic molds”, tells Carina. “But after the exhibition I received more and more orders. And then some more… So I asked Kent if they wanted to take over the production. He was reluctant at first – he did not think this big vase was going
to be a success – but they still produce them, something I am very happy about.” Carina’s vases are loved and cherished in homes all over the world. You could even say vases have become something of a trademark for her. “I think I am interested in the simplicity of the vase, something that is meant to both endure and be enhanced by usage, but also stand alone”, says Carina. “The organic things you put in the vase become the decoration.” Carina herself thinks it is hard to say why Pallo and Dagg have become such huge successes. “Maybe the timing was right.”
The Kingdom of Crystal means a lot to Carina. “It is partly a time during which I studied glass in Orrefors. In those days the big glassworks were the focus for us all, but a lot has happened since. In the long run I think the change will lead to positive things. Smaller but equally interesting units will appear and the same goes for the entire art industry, I think. Meanwhile it is important not to lose the knowledge which can be found here, in the Kingdom of Crystal.” Carina is now working on new projects together with Skrufs Glasbruk. “We have a good cooperation and work together on several levels”, says Carina.

WITH A TOUCH OF COLOUR Calling the last years a success is not an exaggeration. Nybro Glasbruk has found a new style and a new expression and their airbrush painted glass has become something of a trademark. The success-factor is spelled Everyday life. It is busy times at Nybro Glasbruk. Glass is painted and packed in order to be sent to customers around Sweden and the rest of the world. Last years success with series such as Crystal Ink and Memento Mori has made a new target group find their way to their products. It is the younger customers, which previously constituted a small part of the customer base, who have increased. If you want to know the reason for the success, it is the fact that everyday life is the benchmark when developing new products. At least if you ask the people at Nybro Glasbruk. ”Our glass is made to be used”, says Johan Lindgren. ”We want to show that the glass you put on your breakfast table can be both beautiful and functional – and hand painted. Everyday life is always our focus, a beautiful everyday life.” Furthermore, the airbrush technique has enabled glass painter Anders Lindblom, together with his colleagues, to create a style unique for Nybro Glasbruk. ”All our glass is hand painted”, says Anders. ”We only work with organic paint, which means they are lead free. That feels good for us who paint, as well for our customers.”

COLOUR AND DESIGN In Pukeberg, in the outskirts of Nybro, lays one of the best preserved works environments in the country and this place has become a meeting point for art, handicraft and design. In the glassworks there is no longer any large-scale production, but in front of the furnaces activity is still high. One of the reasons for this is the fact that the National School of Glass is situated here in Pukeberg. Pukebergs Glasbruk was founded in 1871 and is known for their colourful glass. During summer small scale series are produced and sold in the shop, next the glassworks. Glassblower and designer Gunne Brandstedt work in the here. He has more than 50 years experience of the handicraft and has worked in Pukeberg for 20 years. “Together we experiment quite a lot with colour and shape”, says Mathias Ripheden, who is the owner of the glass shop and runs the glassworks during summer. When school day is over and evening falls, activity continues in the glassworks, but now with traditional Småland food and entertainment from glassblowers and musicians. Apart from hyttsill there is a lot of concerts with both local and national guests on stage. The National School of Glass offer education on upper secondary level, as well as adult education and vocational education. It attracts pupils from the different Nordic countries and part of the education is held in the glassworks of Pukebergs Glasbruk, where visitors can see the student experiment and refine their handicraft in front of the furnaces.

New glass exhibition at Kalmar Castle
THE GLOWING KINGDOM OF CRYSTAL Fredrik Nielsen runs the glass studio The Garage in Stockholm and has a studio in the old mill office in Boda. He comes here to be able to work and pay full attention to his art, without being disturbed. “We live in a time when anything is possible. But glass blowing is so deeply rooted in years and hours of drudging. It is blood, sweat and tears and this is what I love about it. Art has to take time.” Boda and the glassworks in The Glass Factory, which Fredrik led during 2013, play a great part in his artistry. “Christopher Ramsey invited me. It was 2009 and Boda was like an oasis. A lot has happened in the Kingdom of Crystal since then, and I think the art has taken a step forward. It is blossoming and there is a feeling of a fresh start.” For Peter Hermansson the road to glass went via graffiti, painting, music and a life crisis. Ten years have now passed since he for the first time stepped into a glasswork, the creative pieces fell into place and he fell in love with the glass. “I was struck by how the Kingdom of Crystal was like a sub-culture. You have industrial structures with great craftsmanship, but also the artistic expression. I instantly realized that art glass was going to be a way forward for the Kingdom of Crystal.” Peter has his studio in the old mill office opposite The Glass Factory. “I am not romanticizing the material or the history, but see the potential in what is here in the Kingdom of Crystal today. I also see an increasing interest for the handicraft and for the art from this specific area. We melt sand into glass and shape it with our hands. It is for real.”

A PASSION FOR GLASS The Glass Factory is steaming with life and activity while Maja Heuer, head of the museum, is preparing for a new intense season. 2016 contains, among many things, a glass auction, several exhibitions and guest artists. Apart from the permanent exhibitions, that is. “During 2016 we offer our broadest program ever”, says Maja. “We put extra effort on the events, we have refurbished the shop and widened the assortment. We also have several exciting collaborations with internationally acclaimed artist, like Teresa Almaida from Portugal. Furthermore, we focus a lot on our own productions together with artists like Fredrik Nielsen and Åsa Jungnelius.” The Glass Factory is an interactive and experience-based museum known for their experimental collaborations where they fuse arts and crafts, music and film. The impact has been massive and one of their many partners is the Louvre in Paris. The glassworks is the heart of the museum and apart from producing their own products, visitors can see glass shows where the limits of what is possible to do with hot glass mass is constantly being challenged.

IN THE DEEP FOREST People talk about the magic in the forests of Småland and the environment around the small mill town of Målerås is no exception. The area has a special kind of nature. Majestic pine and fur together with moss covered rocks create a mystical yet inviting air. This is where artists Mats Jonasson and Ludvig Löfgren collect inspiration for their detailed glass objects. For Mats Jonasson the landscape around Målerås has had great impact on his design and his sharp sense of details and love for the nature has made his glass art famous around the world. ”Nature here speaks to me, it is not smooth and pleasing but beautiful in its moroseness. There is also something mystical over the landscape and a lot of inspiration comes to me when I am out hiking in the forest.” The modern history of Målerås Glasbruk is characterised by the popular animal reliefs in crystal and has over the years become something of a trademark for Mats Jonasson. ”It is exciting to try to capture the animals – or their soul, if you like – with the glass.” During the last years the handmade, sparkling crystal has been combined with hand moulded iron from the ironworks at Målerås Glasbruk. The rustic iron becomes a dramatic contrast to the transparancy of the crystal and in the exhibition hall at the glassworks selected animals and mystical creatures are shown. All with the unique combination of iron and crystal. Animals and nature is also something which inspires Ludvig Löfgren, who is tied to Målerås since 2013. In the series Into the woods he lets nature move into our homes and among the different objects there are hand moulded fir cones and mushrooms, as well as animals in all shapes and sizes. In previous collections imaginative monkeys, colourful peacocks and eagles have emerged from the glass mass and given our homes a touch of wildlife. Ludvig likes to create animals with humanlike features. ”I find it interesting to reflect around animals as symbols. An owl give certain analogies, while a snake make us think about other things.” Both Ludvig Löfgren and Mats Jonasson are ture ambassadors for the Swedish glass and the creativity which takes place in the glassworks. It is not hard to see that the landscape of Småland and the love of the glass in a very substantial way affects what is created in the furnaces by the designers. The magical and the mystical meet and shape and create something unique for the glass from Målerås. PINTEREST.COM/GLASRIKET

HERITAGE AND FUTURE IN BERGDALA The pace is high at the Bergdala glassworks, which since a year back is owned and run by Roger Johansson. For Ida Olai and Helén Tapper, the designers who are now tied to Bergdala, the future is an open horizon. “What´s happening here in Bergdala is inspiring”, says Ida. “There is such a strong love for glass and a terrific optimism. Roger has really lifted the glassworks and shown that you can always find new ways forward.” During this last year Roger has proved that glass from Bergdala, with flagship Blå kant, is both cherished and purchased and he agrees that he administers something very unique.
32 | GLASRIKET 2016
“Here in Bergdala there is a fantastic works environment. It is the last of the wooden glassworks from the old days which still stands and I look forward to show that, as well as the glass of Ida’s and Helén’s. In 2016 are sole focus is on design.” “I love to work widely and find products that correspond to the company and its feeling”, says Helén Tapper. “During
2016 I will introduce a new tableware series, but also a line of unique and personal glass objects.” Ida Olai’s series Norrsken, Northern light, will expand and she will also present a series of art glass. “The Kingdom of Crystal has such fantastic craftsmen and being able to work here is wonderful.”

MADE BY ME There is only one thing more fun than watching and that is doing it yourself. At several glassworks around the Kingdom of Crystal you can try glassblowing. It is tricky and sweaty, but very fun. At the Glass Factory activities aimed at children are focus and tutored by skillful glassblowers and young visitors get to blow their own bowl. It is also possible to try glass molding and painting or engraving a glass object. Both Målerås and Kosta Glasscenter have popular DIY activities where children and adults can try glassblowing together with a glassblower. During approximately 20 minutes you can try to blow and handle warm glass mass and when your bowl or ball has cooled down you can bring it home – a fun memory from the Kingdom of Crystal.

EVENING FUN AT THE GLASSWORKS Hyttsill is one of our most loved traditions and apart from proper Småland food a night with hyttsill contains both glass and music. Today’s hyttsill carries on the tradition to at the end of the day gather around the furnaces to get warm and eat. Back in the days, both those working at the glassworks as well as people passing by took the opportunity to eat and enjoy storytelling and music. These days the hyttsill is a loved feature on the glass tours and something which should be experienced by anyone who wants to see the real Kingdom of Glass. The menu is practically unchanged since the old days and just like then sturdy Småland food is served: pickled herring, pork that has been fried crisp, isterband (smoked pork sausage) and baked potatoes. And the meal is, of course, finished with ostkaka (the Småland variation of cheese cake, quite different in taste from the common ordinary one) As in the old days the entertainment is an important part of the hyttsill and besides music there are glass shows in front of the furnaces. THE HIDDEN GLASS The first decades of the 20th century meant new possibilities for the production of glass after new methods reached Sweden from the continent. It was mainly the flat glass production that saw a boom and this was also noticeable in the Kingdom of Crystal where certain glassworks started to specialise on this kind of glass. Today flat glass is not the first thing that comes to mind when you talk about the Kingdom of Glass, but together with industrial glass it still constitutes a large and important part of the glass production in the Kingdom of Crystal. In 1919 the foundry proprietor Ernst Johansson founded Emmaboda Fönster glasbruk, the window glass factory in Emmaboda. Here glass was blown in cylinder shape, cut lengthwise and flattened to rectangles and then turned into window glass. In 1934 the mechanical production of flat glass started and the company changed its name to Emmaboda Glasverk. Today the company is a part of Saint-Gobain, one of the largest companies in the world, but never the less their feet are firmly set in the soil of the Kingdom of Crystal.
Part of the Kingdom of Crystal ”The fact that we are a part of the Kingdom of Crystal is more and more notice able”, says Mikael Harmander Salleke, marketing coordinator at Emmaboda Glas Saint-Gobain. ”With our new brand Emmaboda Home our glass has become a detail which gives the home all the different nuances that comes with glass – light, colour, pattern, depth and reflections – which in turn contributes to the feeling of being a part of the tradition in the area.” The company Glasteknik i Emmaboda AB is also located in Emmaboda and they work with lighting glass, furniture and decorating glass, as well as industrial glass.
42 | GLASRIKET 2016
”Now and then we cooperate with the glass artists around the Kingdom of Crystal and it is always exciting to work with them”, tells Joakim Hultqvist who is CEO at Glasteknik. ”We have, for example, worked with Kjell Engman, Ulrika and Bertil Vallien and Lise-Lotte Henriksen and it is fun to see their art take shape. We help them with things like piercing, bending, fusing or blasting.” Glasteknik i Emmaboda is a family business which was founded in 1988, but the foundations for the company was set shortly after the Second World War when Joakim’s grandfather together with his brother started a glass business in Kolsbygd outside of Nybro. ”Apart from artist collaborations we don’t have very much contact with the glassworks in the area, but more so with other companies in the neighbourhood working with flat glass”, says Joakim. ”It is a great advantage to have them close and we are all a part of the Kingdom of Crystal.” About 50 kilometres from Emmaboda lays Lenhovda where Inwido, one of Europe’s biggest manufacturers of windows and doors, is located. The foundation for what was later to become Inwido was laid in 1924 when Lenhovda Snickerifabrik was founded. In the beginning production was focused on building trade joinery, but in the mid 50s they specialised in wooden windows and during the 60s they became first i Sweden to offer painted and ready-glassed windows. At the same time they changed name to Elitfönster.
”In order to supply the window production with isolation glass we built our own glass factory here i 1979”, tells Anders Lundh who is manager at the glass department. ”Today the glass factory has 73 employers and we use 1,2 million square meters of flat glass each year.”
Love of history Even though Inwido does not work with the glassworks in the Kingdom of Crystal, there is a lot of glassworks history on the company’s premises. ”There used to be a glassworks here and that is why part of the factory is called ’hyttan’, which is the Swedish word for ’glassworks’”, says Patrik Larsson at Inwido. ”The glassworks was closed in 1963 and according to what I have been told, they made medicine glass and things like that. We also have a steam engine which used to drive the ground machines in Kosta Boda. It was moved here in the 60s with the purpose of running the generator which delivered electricity to the sawmill next to the glassworks. It was up and running until 1976 and I remember how the steam whistle sounded over the village at lunch time”, smiles Patrik. ”The steam engine is still here, but unfortunately there is no steam running it. In order for it not to rust I go and turn the levers now and then. It is fun to have it here, it is a historical piece from the Kingdom of Crystal”, he concludes.
