ARTIST STATEMENT In my microfluidic systems, I offer the viewer a perspective into the world of bubbles at the edge of our human scale. Watching the laws of physics at work can be simultaneously beautiful and metaphorical. Patterns spontaneously emerge through selforganization, exemplifying how these forces shape the natural world on all scales, from an atom to a solar system.

Fahan Sky McDonagh, Divine Shield II, 2019 | Detail. Lava, Borosilicate Glass | 6.5” x 5.5” x 5” | (Photo: Megan Beckler)

ARTIST STATEMENT Divine Shield is a series of sculptures made with found lava rock and borosilicate glass. The lava is sourced sustainably from old lava fields in Oregon. Using a hand torch and fine borosilicate rods, I draw a glass encasement around the stone. Each piece in the series grows in a different pattern. Originally, my concern for the environment lead to this investigation. What was merely an idea about protection has evolved into an energetic field emanating from the lava itself. I believe there is a connection between all things and this energy lies in the unseen.

Piret Ellamaa, Frequency, 2019 | Detail | Glass frit | 30cm x 30cm x 40cm | (Photo: Tiina Sarapu)

ARTIST STATEMENT Numerous frequencies and waves, such as sound waves or WIFI are invisible to the eye. With the help of glass, I have made the frequencies visible while sprinkling and mixing sand and fine glass frit in the mold. The natural flow of sand shapes the layer of glass. Symbiosis will be formed between two quite similar materials. The symbiosis will be broken when experiencing a major environmental change such as 820 degrees of heat. Glass has been melted into a compact mass, sand however remains still sand - it will fall out between the layers of glass and leaves absence behind.
