GLASS ART SOCIETY

JURORS For our 2020 GAS Student Exhibition, we would like to thank jurors, Deborah Czeresko, Chris McElroy, and Rui Sasaki, for their time and expertise. They reviewed 50+ applications from students representing more than 10 different countries to select awards. They were impressed by the level and range of work that was submitted and congratulate all students who have participated.

Deborah Czeresko is a New York City-based artist, fabricator, and designer, Czeresko uses a range of approaches and techniques in her work including hot glass sculpting, performance, and collaboration. She began working with glass at UrbanGlass, formerly the New York Experimental Glass Workshop, in 1987 after earning a BA in psychology from Rutgers University. In 1992, she earned a graduate degree in studio art at Tulane University, New Orleans. Since then, she has been a glassblowing instructor and visiting artist at many universities and schools throughout the United States and in Europe, most recently at Tyler School of Arts in Philadelphia, College of Creative Studies in Detroit and LUCA School of Arts in Ghent, Belgium. In 2019, Czeresko won Netflix’s art glass competition show Blown Away. She has recently been represented by Heller Gallery in Chelsea, New York.

Christopher McElroy earned his BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University and is an MFA candidate at the University of Washington. He has exhibited throughout the United States, and has taught flameworking workshops at The Studio of The Corning Museum of Glass, Red Deer College, Kyoto University of Art and Design, the Penland School of Crafts, and the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem. McElroy creates sculptural forms, actions, environments, video, and photographs that negotiate ideas of civilization and wilderness. Informed by lifelong interest in aspects of food production, ranging from water rights and forest management to urban gardening and biotechnology, McElroy’s work probes at problems in human interactions with the natural world. Rui Sasaki is a Japanese artist and educator mainly using transparent materials such as glass. Her work is about the exploration of discovery of subtle intimacy through the interplay between body and surroundings. She is using glass as the vehicle of recording and preservation. She graduated from Rhode Island School of Design in the US with an MFA in 2010 and her BA from Musashino Art University in Japan in 2006. She has been invited many artists in residence programs and exhibitions around the world. She also has been awarded a number of prizes and grants such as the Jutta Cuny-Franz Memorial Award, the International Glass Prize, Irving Borowsky International Prize in Glass Art and Young Glass 2017, and the 33rd Rakow Commission. Her work is a part of permanent collections in many museums all over the world such as the Ernsting Stiftung Glass Museum (Germany), Glasmusset Ebeltoft (Denmark), and Corning Museum of Glass (the US). She is currently working as specialist/faculty in Glass at Kanazawa Utatsuya Kogei Kobo in Ishikawa, Japan.
