Beerwah Ladies Golf

Contributed by Jenny Kelly There were 55 diehards who came out to play a Single Par event on Thursday. The fact that it isn’t the most popular format didn’t deter Val Turner who has really found form to Sharon with winners win the day again Val and Gloria this week and take home the trophies generously donated by a couple of our lady members, Sharon Phillips and Carol Fraser. Val came in with a score of plus 4 to take out Division 1. Runner up was Julie McMahon with a squared card, on the dreaded count back from Jill Downes, also square. One of our octogenarians Gloria White once again showed us that age is no barrier to playing good golf when she came in with a plus 1 to win Division 2. Sue Wood was runner up on minus 2, with second runner up Gail Murphy on minus 3. Nearest to the pins went to Di Smith on 2, Marie Oxlade on 5 and Lea Garner was closest on the 16th. Monica Dangerfield took out Division 1 on the 18th, and Jan Corfield won Division 2. The random birdie hole was safe on number 15, and the ball rundown went to minus 4. Put on your dancing shoes ladies cos it’s Christmas Breakup Party time. The course should have greened up a bit with that nice drop of rain, and we are in for a fun day. Until then, stay safe and good golfing. www.gcnews.com.au

Young local boxers show class

Contributed by Steve Pitt Local junior boxers took on the best in the State over the weekend and have shown their potential in the Queensland State Championships at Acacia Ridge. Two young athletes from Hinterland Boxing Club at Beerwah – Leroy McNamara and Dana Coolwell – displayed their skill in tough bouts. Leroy reached the semi-final in the 63kg class before only just going down in a close split decision to a fancied opponent who ended up taking the gold medal and the Queensland Championship. Dana stepped up a category, entering the 48kg division, and although it was only his eighth bout, he ended up taking out the gold medal in that category. Trainer Steve Pitt said it was a great effort from both young fighters. “Dana’s win was against heavier and more experienced fighters, and the two lads have set themselves up well for a good showing in the National early next year.” Landsborough’s Jake Molloy represented Handful Boxing Club and reached the final in his division. His trainer, world champion Brett ‘Handful’ Smith, said that Jake’s bout was very close and he has gained plenty of experience from his first state competition. “You always train and fight to win but sometimes it doesn't happen, but this will pay dividends in trials for Nationals early next year,” Brett said. “Jake is now raising money to help him attend a high performance camp for juniors who have been identified as possible future national athletes.”
