Sport Maleny Bowls Club

Contributed by Ian Hansen Saturday, August 3 Championship Finals were played: Men’s Singles, Men’s Pairs and Mixed Pairs. Congratulations to all the winners and commiserations to the losers. Two of these Matches were very close encounters. In the Men’s Singles, Pairs Partners but Singles Rivals, Curley Petersen and Ian Hansen (also last year’s finalists) fought out a closely contested match. Curly lead by 4 shots after 6 ends but Hansen fought back to lead by 4 shots, 12 shots to 8 after 12 ends. On the 13th end Hansen held 2 shots which would have given him a handy 6 shot buffer but Curley proved equal to the task and with a great bowl shifted the Jack to turn a 2 shot deficit into a 2 shot margin and reduce the lead to just 2 shots. Hansen then committed the gravest of errors in dropping the whole 4 shots on the 16th end to surrender the lead and was unable to recover. Curly lead 22 shots to 18 and held Match on the 24th end but Hansen played a great Bowl to save the match. He then won 3 shots on the 26th end to trail 22 shots to 24 but Curly won the 27th and hence the match, in what was a most enjoyable match. The Men’s Pairs Final was another closely fought match between Jim King/Don Ginns and Allan Cook/ Warwick Moody. The lead changed a number of times but after 18 ends they were locked together on 17 shots each. Jim and Don then won 3 shots on the 19th and 2 shots on the 20th to give them a commanding 5 shot lead going into the last end. Fortunately, this proved just enough as Allan and Warwick took 4 shots on the final end to go down by just a single shot, 21 shots to 22. Jim and Don’s victory proved that their win over four times Pairs winners in the Semi-final was no fluke. The Mixed Pairs Final was won by the Oldfields, Lucy and Ray, by 31 shots to 14 over Margaret Ginns and Graeme Glover. Tuesday’s winners with 2 wins +30 were the Triples team of Sandra Kapetanic, Jim King and Curly Petersen. Once again the Jackpot wasn’t won so is building up to quite a sizeable amount. Wednesday’s Twilight Challenge winning Teams were: Bom Diggety, Handles, Ezi Riders, Mighty 10 and Tutors. The individual winners were: Lead - Dave Edwards, 2nd - Melita Gesch and Skip - Jackie Montgomery. The Touchers went to: Dicko, Dave Edwards and Dave Handley. The lucky money board winners were Sandra Han and Dave Handley. Friday’s Scroungers winners were: Heather Snel, Joe Walters, Jane Burgess, Scott Alexander and Ian Porter. The only member present to claim her Sponsors’ Prize win was Jane Burgess who won the Monica’s Cafe Prize. The Money Board went to Tony Snel. There was a visit from the Ulysses Motorcycle Club on Sunday which was enjoyed by all and many thanks to the helpers. This week there is Jackpot Pairs/Triples Tuesday, Twilight Challenge Wednesday Scroungers Friday and the last of the Championship Finals Saturday. Finally, Wednesday August 17, there is a visit from the New Zealand Group Tour Bowlers and players may be needed for Bowls at 1.00pm.

Witta Tennis

Contributed by Pauline Fraley ln spite of the valiant efforts of Witta Wagtails they fell prey to Maleny Racqueteers. Thanks to Gerry, Christine, Pauline and Sonia. Whistlers played at Yandina against Allsorts. Everyone struggled with the tricky wind and when the first two sets went to tiebreakers we knew it was going to be long day. We managed to bring the win home by only one game. Score was 37-36 games, four sets all. The team was Liz Mellish, Brenda Warner, Donna Kuskopf and Aki Lepper. The Wildcats had a good win against Yandina Plain Janes. Pauline, Libby, Jenie and Sonia played hard from the get go and didn’t let up. The score was 7-1 sets, 46-27. Don’t forget Heroes day on August 20. Social tennis: Monday 8.00am and Saturday 1.00pm, all welcome. Court bookings: 0437 295 501 or www.wittatennis.com.au. 52
