Hi Everyone...

What's On this week

A couple of weeks ago we included a story about an artwork created by local artist Laszlo Szerenyi as a gift of appreciation for the team at the Maleny Police station. What struck me at the time was what a thoughtful gesture it was - to create something so personal and fun to show how much the work the police do means to the rest of the community. When someone does you a good turn or does something that benefits you directly it is easy to automatically say thanks, but the time and thought involved in Laszlo’s work was so heartfelt and considered. So when Laszlo popped into our office to tell me about his next artwork I said I would come along and photograph the hand over. This is a very roundabout way of explaining this week’s front cover featuring some of the staff from the Maleny Hospital, another very deserving group of people receiving the community’s thanks in a very creative way. See the artwork that Laszlo Regards, has created on page 3.

By Lea Parkes Last week Maleny artist Laszlo Szerenyi dropped into the Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital to present hospital staff with a gift of appreciation, which wasn’t just your regular box of chocolates and a thank you card. Laszlo had created a unique artwork that featured his water colour painting as well as hand written messages of thanks from across the community including the primary and high school principals, the police, SES, politicians and business people. Laszlo, who is originally from Poland, has lived on the Sunshine Coast since 2006 and made the move to Maleny in the past year. Clearly he is embracing being part of the nurturing and supportive environment of the town and is keen to be part of showing a collective appreciation to those dedicated to serving our local community. As fate would have it when Laszlo arrived at the hospital to present the painting and asked if he could see the Acting Director of nursing Karen Croker, she happened to be in meeting with a cross section of hospital staff on hand for the presentation. They were physiotherapist Sally Horsley, administration coordinator Stephen McGrath, occupational therapist Louise Harries, nurse unit manager Kim Rylatt, Acting medical superintendent Dr Kris McQuaid and administration officer Kathleen Mahoney. Karen said it was wonderful to receive such a heartfelt gift from the artist and the community.

“It means a lot to know that the artist specially created the painting for us and that people in the community have taken the time to add their thoughts to acknowledge the service we provide at the Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital. “We at the hospital would like to thank everybody involved,” Karen said. Laszlo whose professional background is as a stonemason and artist tiler, is currently enjoying exploring his artistic skills and the process of creating these artworks of appreciation. This is the second artwork that Laszlo has created in this style, having recently presented the Maleny Police with an artwork for the new police station. Laszlo explained that he had recently started working in water colour but also likes to create portraits in charcoal. He is happy to take on commission works and can be contacted on laszloartisttiler@gmail.com or phone 0481 815 930.

Dreaming of a wedding Headline By Sonia Clark Peachester resident Brett Parkhurst reached out to GC&M News last week to share the story of his partner Catherine, who sadly has terminal cancer, and his commitment to help her fulfil some of her final wishes. Catherine is just 31 years old and in palliative care in Caloundra but despite the odds, the couple is hoping that she will be home for her final days. Brett explained that one of Catherine’s greatest wishes has been to get married, so last week he proposed at Dove Cottage at Caloundra with Catherine’s 12-year-old daughter Montana in attendance. “There are some wishes I'm working on extremely hard - wanting to be married is important to Catherine - and so with the help of a local business, I sourced a beautiful engagement ring and proposed to Catherine. “She was delighted and I received a big yes from her and a lot of heartfelt joy,” Brett said. He is working with the charity My Wedding Wish to organise the wedding, which he hopes will take place next month. The couple is also hoping that Pastor Ricky Emmerson from Life Church Sunshine Coast will officiate at the celebration. Brett is trusting that Catherine will be able to build up enough strength to make this dream possible.

Brett and Catherine with daughter Montana Brett said that, after speaking with Catherine, some of her final wishes include assistance in breaking in her Clydesdale-cross horse Angel and the possibility of having a nice family holiday somewhere they have never been before. If you would like to assist with Catherine’s final wishes, Brett has set up a GoFundMe page at https://www.gofundme.com/make-specialdreams-come-true-for-an-amazing-woman, which also has more information about Catherine’s story.

Beerburrum’s getting back on track By Greg Brown The rejection of the proposed quarry on the outskirts of Beerburrum at the recent meeting of Council has been widely applauded by Beerburrum locals and others concerned with the impacts such a major operation would have had on the village. Once the proposal became public knowledge two years ago, the Beerburrum community rallied together and formed a working group, calling themselves Beerburrum Action Group. Beerburrum once was a bustling township. But over the years, the town lost its prominence in the region. The town started to strain for an identity. The commercial area was struggling; the public spaces were looking worn; new residents had no real way to connect with the town and with each other. The viability of the town was under a cloud … something had to be done thought a few inspired locals. In 2013, the community asked the newly elected Councillor for Division 1, Rick Baberowski, to help them revitalise Beerburrum. Thus, began the ‘Beerburrum Revitalisation Group’. Public meetings were held and plans were drawn up on how the community could work together with local and state government. The cooperative approach saw a ‘bakers dozen’ of thirteen ideas that everyone agreed to work on as part of the revitalisation plan. Over the ensuing years, a number of those

Cr Baberowski with Beerburrum's Heather Cardaci thirteen projects have been delivered, with some – such as the idea of a 1799 expedition trail from Pumicestone Passage to Beerburrum, following the epic journey of Matthew Flinders in 1799 – still in the early stages. Cr Baberowski is delighted at what has been achieved by such a small community. “By simply empowering locals to have a unified voice means so much to creating positive pathways for change. “My role is just to take those community concerns and collective solutions and help navigate them through the bureaucratic processes, and to be a strong community voice when it is needed,” he said. Since then, residents have moved and new faces have come to town. The revitalisation energy naturally tends to wane. Then came the quarry announcement, and suddenly that energy returned, bringing with it new voices and ideas. As the saying goes, from adversity comes strength … and Beerburrum has grown again into a strongly voiced community through the genesis of the Beerburrum Action Group. The next stage for the group is to look at incorporation, ensuring that the positive energy continues and Beerburrum prospers.

From this week, Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) will start work on a major upgrade of the Mt Ngungun summit track in the Glass House Mountains National Park. The track and car park will be closed from April 8 to August 31. To complete the works as quickly as possible, visitor access will be restricted throughout the works. All tracks, firebreaks and entry points will be closed to public access during this time. The work is part of the QPWS 2018-2019 capital works program to upgrade visitor facilities in the Glass House Mountains National Park. QPWS thanks visitors for their patience and apologises for any inconvenience. As an alternative, visitors are advised to use the extensive trail network at the nearby Tibrogargan section of the national park. Signs and barriers will be in place at the car park on Fullertons Road when works start. For your safety, please obey all signs and directions from authorised officers on site and do not enter closed areas.

Cats across the Sunshine Coast are hitting the streets in high-tech cat harnesses, all in the name of environmental science. Researcher Nicole Galea from Maleny is kitting out household moggies with harnesses and accelerometers to track how they behave when they are outdoors in a bid to boost wildlife protection efforts. Volunteer cat owners across the Sunshine Coast are being asked to use the devices for eight consecutive nights with all data recorded based on their cat’s unique movements. Nicole says domestic cats have long been responsible for preying on native wildlife and yet many of the Sunshine Coast’s estimated 38,600 domestic cats are left outside at night. Nicole, who is studying a Bachelor of Ecology (honours) at the Sunshine Coast University, said the devices could monitor whether a cat was walking, running, hunting or pouncing. “We are studying biomechanics, which is the way the cat is moving, so that we can understand what they are getting up to at night long after we go to bed,” she said. “Camera trapping only shows a snippet of what

6

AD

the cats are up to and human observation can be very difficult, whereas the accelerometer is showing us activities and behaviours that can give us a better idea of how cats are truly impacting the bushland. “We know where the cats go, but we don’t know what they are doing and the impact they are having on bushland,” Nicole said. “Biometric data will give us important information to help us manage them more effectively.” The research will also assess the effectiveness of a cat “bib” designed to restrict a cat’s natural hunting movements and give prey a better chance of escaping. Sunshine Coast Council laws do not allow cats to roam at night, but Nicole’s project has received special dispensation for its potential to provide valuable data in the fight against domestic animal predation of wildlife. Nicole is seeking 30 registered, microchipped and desexed cats to be involved in the study before it finishes at the end of the month. More information is available from n_g027@student.usc.edu.au. Nicole eventually wants to work in biosecurity and says an approach like this could eventually be tailored to understand and manage other invasive species.

“Glasshouse Country RSL is not simply the only hall for veterans of its kind in the southern part of the Sunshine Coast hinterland. It is also home to other groups like Diggers Rest and Wet Vets and provides a venue for community group meetings including the local Orchid Society and Probus and this renovation will draw many more,” Mr Wallace said. Sub branch secretary Wendy Siebrecht said the refurbishment that would be achieved with the grant was invaluable to veterans, their families and the local community. “We really hope to be able to provide a venue that brings together veterans from all age groups and their families in a welcoming and supporting atmosphere,” Wendy said.

Members of the Glasshouse Country RSL Sub Branch and its local community will benefit from improved social and function facilities, and a more welcoming and safer environment following a successful campaign for federal funding of $258,000 by Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace. The funding, from the Community Development Grants scheme, will go towards upgrades and new equipment for the bar and dining areas, as well as increased space for military heritage displays, safety and security improvements and a redesigned office area. Sub branch vice president Dave Siebrecht said the work was expected to take 12–14 weeks to complete and that the building would continue to be used for all but two of those weeks when asbestos would be removed from the building. “Plans are moving ahead with the building and we anticipate at this stage that the renovation work will be completed around mid-October,” Dave said. The refurbishment will transform the inside of the building and will also have a dramatic impact on how the space functions.

The inaugural CWA Beerwah photography contest went off with a bang, with 84 amazing photographic entries received. Local photographer and guest judge Ilia Starkovsky (pictured left) was very impressed with the quality of entries and found the job of selecting winners over the 11 categories very difficult. The winning photos from each category will be sent to the Nambour North Coast division of the CWA competition for judging at division level in June. The photos were on display at the CWA Hall at the recent Beerwah Tower Green Market. If you missed seeing them you will be able to check out the winners and runner up entries in an exhibition as part of Vianta Arts at the Vianta Espresso and Wine Bar in June. The CWA would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who entered and to judge Ilia for all his help. A special mention to Ken from Banno's Bees (pictured right) for donating a wonderful honey inspired prize pack to the winner of the 'Honey' category.

The Zonta Club of Blackall Range offers two $1500 scholarships for female tertiary students each year. One is for STEM students and the other for students of the humanities. The closing date for applications for the 2019 scholarships is April 30. The scholarships are limited to women who are living, have lived or were educated in the Blackall Range area and have completed one year of study. Check the form for full details on eligibility. President of Zonta Blackall Range Julie Bevan said this year was a significant one for the awarding of such scholarships as Zonta was celebrating its centenary. “A group of New York businesswomen established the first Zonta club in Buffalo in 1919 and it is now a worldwide organisation of business executives and professionals who work together to advance the status of women through service and advocacy,” Julie said. Requests for application forms and completed forms, typed and signed, should be sent to the coordinator of the scholarship committee at scholarship@ zontablackallrange.org.au. Scholarship program coordinator Judith Ross-Smith said these were not the only scholarships women could apply for through Zonta Blackall Range. “Zonta International (ZI) gives several awards to women that are particularly prestigious and financially worthwhile. They all begin with a winner at club level, so if women are interested they should apply for information to the above email address. “Forms are also available for the JM Klausman awards for women in tertiary programs in business and law, Amelia Earhart fellowships for postgraduate students in the fields of aeronautical engineering or related sciences, and women in technology awards for students studying in any area of technological science. “Please let us know if you are interested by contacting us. More information can be obtained by accessing ZI’s website www.zonta.org,” Judith said. Last year Natasha Healy, also of Nambour, won the award for students in the humanities and Jessica Bolin, also of Nambour won the first Zonta scholarship for students in the areas of science, technology, engineering and maths

VIEW clubs raise money for the Smith Family and Learning for Life Program at all their events. Our club supports five Learning for Life students.

Our March meeting, which coincided with the autumn solstice and a full Moon, was hosted in the garden of Helen Johnsen. Members enjoyed wandering around the garden, giving suggestions and identifying a few plants in this really lovely and interesting garden. My favourite part was having the compost bins, a potting bench (all under cover) and a sheltered spot for newly potted plants set up close to the back door. Thanks to Helen for inviting us and sharing her garden with our members. The club’s memorial for Nessie Pratten is almost finalised and we just have to set a date for the ceremony. New members and visitors are welcome to join us in Jeff and Rob's garden on Thursday, April 18, 9.30am. For more information and the address phone 5496 9169.

Living - History

Pius (Pop) Imberger sitting on a recently felled log in the Landsborough district, ca 1920

Backward glance - timber getters and saw mills

sawmills owned by James Campbell and Sons between 1876 and 1936. Alfred Delisser, a contract surveyor who had named the Nullarbor Plain, surveyed the north coast railway line in 1882. Construction required timber, mainly ironbark for sleepers and softer woods for building railway stations and gate houses. By 1900 the need for railway sleepers had grown enormously, providing work for many timber getters and sawmills. With the establishment of the railway line, bullock teams hauled the timber out of the forests to the sawmills and then to the railway stations to be loaded onto trains for the journey to Brisbane. It was not uncommon to see many bullock teams in and around railway yards. Many early timber mills were placed near fresh water, which also provided water for steam driven engines. The extensive stands of timber across the region, lining the river banks as well as the hill country of the Blackall Ranges, are referred to in many early accounts of the region’s history. There were a number of mills throughout the region. Ferris and Draper children near Dyers established a sawmill on the the logs at Thurecht's Mill, ca eastern side of the Landsborough 1930

Timber getters and their bullock teams are long gone but they played a major role in the development of early settlements around Glasshouse Country, which was then known as the Near North Coast. Timber getters arrived long before the pioneering families, who later turned cleared timber areas into farmland with townships springing up close by. By the 1860s, trees were being felled in the region in great numbers. In 1859, Queensland was declared a separate state and the government encouraged new settlement. In 1881, Campbellville had the first mill on the Near North Coast but the early site of Campbellville and its mill is now gone. The mill and township were deep within the forestry region of Beerwah, with the site chosen due to the fresh water available from the upper reaches of Coochin Creek. Prior to the railway opening in the early 1890s, timber was sent by boat from Campbellville, near the junction of Mellum and Coochin creeks, down through Pumicestone Passage or by sea from Mooloolah Heads. The Campbellville mill was the second of 11

Henry Dyer's sawmill, Landsborough, ca 1900

railway line on a spur line directly to the mill. A young Pius Imberger lost his first mill to fire on Mount Mellum in 1919. He then relocated and operated a steam-powered mill from 1923 to 1940 in the vicinity of the Landsborough Memorial Hall. Mill Park on Simpson Street, Beerwah was the site of Simpson’s sawmill, which began operations in 1901. A mill was located on Harpers Creek Road, Conondale with the Tilney brothers Eddie and Ossie the first owners. In the early 1900s, Kenneth Grigor operated a mill in the top paddock at Bankfoot House, Glass House Mountains. Fires destroyed lots of the mills over the years due to combustion in the sawdust and sparks flying. Each town has its stories and most towns experienced mill fires and unfortunate accidents. Thanks to Sunshine Coast Council’s Heritage Library officers for the words and Picture Sunshine Coast for the images.

Bats in backyards in Landsborough Sunshine Coast Council has organised a citizen science project focused on flying foxes in Landsborough to be held this weekend, April 13-14. Called Bats in Backyards, this pilot project – funded through council’s environment levy – wants locals to record information on where they see the flying foxes, what they are doing and what they are feeding on. They want as many people as possible who live within a 20km radius of Landsborough, which covers a large area from Montville, Maleny, Peachester, Glass House Mountains, Coochin Creek and Palmview, to become involved and record flying fox activities. Even if you live outside that area, you can be involved by heading to a local park within that area and becoming citizen scientists for the evenings on Saturday or Sunday. A special phone app will be used to record the information, which is then collated and used by

council to better understand what habitats and food sources the flying foxes prefer so council can better plan for their management in the future. You don’t have to be an actual scientist to help out. You don’t even have to know what type of flying fox you’re looking at or species names of trees … you just need a mobile device and a sense of fun. The pilot project is based on the hugely successful Birds in Backyards event, which many local people take part in each year. To register to become a citizen scientist flying fox watcher, go to the Atlas of Living Australia website www.ala.org.au, click on ‘Participate’ and ‘Join a citizen science project’. From there scroll down a little to find the Bats in Backyards project. To know more about the project you can contact council’s flying fox management officer on wildlife@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and to learn more about flying foxes, go to the council website https://sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and search for ‘flying foxes’, which will bring up a great page dedicated to this native species. The project is only being undertaken this weekend so don’t waste time – register today!

An opportunity to create a new tourist drawcard on the Sunshine Coast hinterland has been given the green light by Sunshine Coast Council. The Barung Landcare Association Inc was granted a community lease by council to establish a state-of-the-art environmental education and resource centre in Maleny. Division 5 councillor Jenny McKay said the new facility would deliver economic benefits to Maleny and the wider hinterland. “The Barung Landcare Association submitted a strong business case to council to establish a viable community native plant nursery and environmental education resource centre in Maleny,” Cr McKay said. “I thank my fellow councillors for supporting the proposal at last Thursday’s ordinary meeting of council to grant the association a 30-year community lease. “Council is satisfied that this proposed new facility offers strong potential from a tourism point of view. It will build on our region’s reputation in the ecology and environmental sustainability space as part of our commitment to foster a healthy, smart and creative Sunshine Coast.” The decision by council to enter into a community lease with Barung Landcare Association is in accordance with the local government regulation 2012. Stage one of the new development is contingent on Barung Landcare Association sourcing $190,000 for earthworks, power, water and drainage infrastructure. Cr McKay has committed $80,000 of divisional funding towards the stage one earthworks. The remainder will need to be sourced by the association via community grants and fundraising.

You Said It Disgusted

As residents of Landsborough, we are absolutely disgusted at the sheer arrogance of Mark Bailey, the Main Roads Minister, and his cohorts in the state government. To totally ignore a request from our elected representative Mark McArdle to attend a public forum of residents concerned with the proposed rail overpass is nothing short of high-handed incompetence. When will the ministers of this government wake up to the fact that their very survival depends on the people. James, Pat and Joanna Aitken Landsborough

Re: Fundraiser for RSL launched

In last week’s GC&M News Mark McArdle called on our local community to help support the Beerwah and District RSL Sub Branch to construct a new home for its members. Mr McArdle talked about the long history of the sub branch. However, it was in fact the Beerwah Peachester RSL Sub Branch that was formed all those years ago, not the more recently created Beerwah and District RSL Sub Branch. The Beeerwah Peachester RSL Sub Branch was founded by the returned veterans who started meeting to share the camaraderie they had formed while serving. The original members were good, communityminded people who worked hard for a living and the community they lived in. By 1979 they had created a community club known as Glasshouse Country RSL, changing its name in 1991 to Beerwah RSL & Citizens Memorial Club. The sub branch and the community club continued to thrive for the next 30 years with the sub branch eventually being able to provide a drop-in centre next door to the club with trained staff who were there for veterans who needed support and help. In 2011 a group of members from the Beerwah Peachester RSL Sub Branch decided to evict the community club and reopen a new club under their management. On July 6, 2015 they were forced to close the club’s doors and went into liquidation losing a million dollar property and all the assets and funds accrued by the sub branch through its long history. Sadly, many of their current members who are now looking for community support were involved in the destruction of the Beerwah Peachester RSL Sub Branch. What I don’t understand is that there is an already established RSL sub branch in the district Glasshouse Country RSL Sub Branch, who support the broader area. Instead of asking for more from our community, why don’t they unite and become a stronger sub branch instead? Sharon Bochow Peachester

Have your say on puppy laws

The proposed new mass puppy breeding facility at Landsborough has brought into sharp focus the ineffectiveness of Sunshine Coast Council planning guidelines, as well as the inadequacies of state legislation governing the large-scale breeding of puppies purely for profit. First, the state legislation and guidelines don’t go far enough. There are no caps on dog numbers allowed to be kept and bred. There are no litter limits and breeding dogs can legally be bred from their first season (6-9 20

Re: Dismissing climate change

Sel Hopley (GC&M News, March 27) dismisses climate science as a billion dollar fraud. But in deriding climate science he is deriding 200 years of physics, chemistry and mathematics — the crowning glory of western civilisation. • In 1824 Fourier (a French mathematician and physicist) noted that our atmosphere keeps the planet warmer than might be expected (by about 30 deg C). • In 1859 Tyndall (an Irish physicist) demonstrated to the Royal Institution in London that CO2 and water vapour absorbed heat radiation and that they were effective in trace quantities. • Around 1900 Arrhenius (a Swedish chemist and all round genius) computed (long hand) a global climate model and estimated that doubling the atmospheric CO2 would shift the global temperature by four degrees. • Since 1900 we have released 23 gigatons of CO2 by burning coal, oil and gas. This has raised the concentration in our atmosphere from 300 ppm to 410 ppm. • Since 1970 there has been an immense amount of work internationally to create, run, calibrate and improve climate models. Summarised in IPCC reports, the projections are becoming progressively more certain and dire. How can these simple facts and 200 years of science be ignored? The world needs to be run on rational evidence-based decisions - not gut feelings. If civilisation is to have any chance of prospering (or even surviving), we have to come together, listen to the accumulated knowledge of scientists and have the courage to act. Unfortunately that needs the cooperation of you the reader, me, Sel and seven billion others. Deciding to leave coal in the ground would be a good place to start. David Lowry Conondale

Is safety not important?

I have written previously about a simple problem with the Bruce Highway, managed by Main Roads. There are signs alerting drivers to the chevrons, suggesting drivers have two chevrons between cars for safety reason - no tailgating - with a view to saving precious lives and also assist in the movement of traffic. Those signs and chevrons were erected and painted on the road surface for a very good reason. The chevrons have faded considerably, so much so it is extremely difficult to see them. Now if Main Roads, which controls the infamous Bruce Highway, possibly the most dangerous highway in Australia, is not interested in repainting those chevrons why haven’t the signs been removed as they are now a hindrance to traffic travelling south from Caloundra if drivers are taking their eyes off the road searching for the now non-existent chevrons. I wouldn’t think it should be too much effort for our local politicians to raise the issue with Main Roads and have something done about it? Brian Stallworthy Glass House Mountains

Icebox speed signs cause complacency and frustration

Member for Glass House Andrew Powell is concerned about roadwork signs currently causing frustration and confusion on a section of LandsboroughMaleny Road, locally known as the ‘icebox’. “Roadworks on the edge of the icebox have been ongoing for roughly a month now and the problem is not with the works itself, but rather with the speed reductions that have been put in place – especially when there is no work being done,” Mr Powell said. The Landsborough-Maleny Road speed limit is usually 80km/h but the icebox speed has been lowered to 60km/h to accommodate the roadworks. The signs begin and end an unusually long distance from the actual works. Maleny resident Ray Williams said he believed that roadwork speed signs should be covered when work isn’t occurring and there is no danger to passing motorists. “Motorists are getting complacent and basically ignoring the signs – and that’s just not safe,” Mr Williams said. Mr Powell said he was a “huge advocate for road safety and the safety of road workers”. “There is nothing wrong with a 60km/h speed limit during roadworks but that is not the issue. The issue is that the speed remains at 60 well outside of working hours,” Mr Powell said. In 2014, the LNP government ensured that when roadworks were unattended on state projects, speed limit signs were returned to a safe driving speed to cut down congestion and remove confusion and complacency. “I hold nothing against the property owner or the company undertaking the roadworks – I am disappointed the Department of Transport and Main Roads is not requiring the signs be covered when it’s safe to do so,” Mr Powell said. “I implore locals to keep to the reduced speed limits, even when there are no workers in sight, to avoid fines and to keep safe, but I will continue to call on TMR remove or cover up these speed limit signs outside of working hours,” Mr Powell said.

Why Australians should travel to Antarctica in 2019 by Laura Pattara Expedition cruises to Antarctica are tipped to be the hottest travel trend for 2019 and it’s really not very surprising. It’s no secret that ice melt in the southernmost region of our planet is increasing at an alarming rate and this means there’s never been a better time to visit Antarctica than right now!

It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience you shouldn’t miss Everyone who has been to Antarctica swears the experience left them awestruck and considers it a once-in-a-lifetime bucket-list journey like no other. The only things you’ll hear are the deafening sound of a penguin colony, of an iceberg calving and the startling silence of a continent that’s never been conquered by man. There are very few places that can make you feel both insignificant and on top of the world simultaneously. Antarctica is such a place. Don’t miss your chance to experience it. The days of the last minute deals are over Once upon a time, you could plan on spending a week or two in Ushuaia in Argentina waiting for some magical deal to pop up at the port but this no longer happens. Expeditions are not only fully-booked on every departure date but they’re booked out months in advance. Spontaneity may well be the spice of life but when it comes to visiting Antarctica, leave it too late and you’ll (literally) miss the boat. Tourism helps the cause The need to protect Antarctica has been thrust to the forefront of environmental concerns because enough people have gone – experienced it – and come back as environmental warriors. Given this is the only continent on Earth with no indigenous or permanent population, Antarctica has been given a voice – a very loud voice – thanks to scientists and expedition cruise passengers. How much does it cost to travel to Antarctica from Australia? The cost of a cruise to Antarctica is arguably the primary concern for potential adventurers. We could bet our bottom dollar that you’ve already heard about how expensive this destination is. This is due primarily to the greater cruising distance. Relax. Antarctica is certainly not the cheapest place you could visit from Australia but there are a few ways you Typical cruise route departing from Hobart, can mitigate costs if you plan ahead. Australia or Invercargill, NZ Expeditions to the south from Australia and New Zealand hold an incredible advantage – they take passengers on longer and much wilder journeys to the east. Of all the expeditions on offer, these are by far the most magnificent but, given their very nature and the fact that the Antarctic summer is so short, only depart a couple of times a year. Cruises to Antarctica from South America Cruises departing Ushuaia in Argentina are by far the cheapest option for Australians and that holds true even when you include return flights to South America. Cruises are cheaper due to the sheer number of ships and operators, as well as shorter cruising times. It is in Ushuaia that you’ll find the greater choice of ships, itineraries, comfort levels and price.

Make your African travel dream a reality

By Sonia Clark Fuelled by her love of exotic adventure stories and wildlife, Maleny’s Janet Myers had always nurtured a life-long dream to travel to Africa. At 74, Janet was unsure how to make that dream a reality until she saw an ad in Glasshouse Country & Maleny News for Glenview-based African safari specialists The Infinite Horizon. Janet Myers with guide Alex Janet said she had always thought in Okavango travelling to Africa would be too expensive and out of her reach. “However, when I saw how reasonably priced the organised trip to Tanzania was, I rang and chatted to owner Teena Chumbley, who was lovely. “I realised that it was something I’d wanted to do for so long that I decided to just go for it and it was one of the best decisions I’ve made,” she said. As well as wanting to visit Tanzania, Janet had a few other African experiences on her bucket list such as seeing Victoria Falls, trekking for gorillas and flying over the Okavango Delta. Initially concerned about travelling on her own, Janet said she was completely put at ease as Teena accommodated all her additional travel wishes to put together an accessible trip of a lifetime. “Teena and Steve from The Infinite Horizon were incredible, with their indepth knowledge of Africa and local contacts, they organised everything and followed up every step of the way,” Janet said. “Although I signed up for a guided tour of Tanzania with Steve, I travelled through Zambia, Botswana and Rwanda by myself but felt completely safe and supported every step of the way will all my pickups and transfers preorganised. “The guides and overall service at every place was fantastic and I’m just so glad I finally did it – it was everything I’d hoped for and more,” Janet said. To find out more visit www.theinfinitehorizon.net or call Teena 0457 249 998 or Steve 0467 270 619.

Hinterland Kids Peachester hops into Easter Dancing queen – Bella Knight Contributed by Kate Burnett Proud smiles lit up the faces of Peachester State School students this week as they modelled handmade hats for the annual Easter hat parade. All students had the opportunity to create their own masterpieces at school and home. From pom-pom covered rabbit ears to a bunny mobile complete with number plates, they impressed teachers, parents and peers with their creative flair. The children wrapped up their final gathering for term one with promises to eat lots of chocolate over the holidays (I’m sure they meant carrots)!

Contributed by Alison Edwards Last year Bella Knight, a year 6 student from Glass House Mountains State School, auditioned for the musical ‘Grease’. She was lucky enough to get a part in the ensemble for this production. Bella took part in numerous rehearsals and performances of this production at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre, an experience she described as “amazing”! Following this wonderful achievement, this year, Bella auditioned for the musical ‘The Wizard of Oz’ and again the selectors noticed her wonderful dancing talent and were quick to offer her a place in the production. Bella is currently rehearsing in Brisbane each

week for the show’s performances in the June/ July school holidays. Bella’s roles will include being one of the munchkins, a poppy, one of the Emerald City people, a jitterbug and a winkie. Bella is an extremely dedicated and talented dancer, who works diligently to be her best. She is very modest when it comes to her dancing ability and her achievements. Everyone at Glass House Mountains State School is so proud of her and her efforts. We can’t wait to see her upcoming performance.

Easter bonnets on parade

Contributed by Casey McIntyre Easter hats, or more traditionally the Easter bonnet, are a tried and true part of Easter celebrations at primary schools around Australia and this year was no exception. The prep students at Landsborough State School created beautiful bonnets and paraded around the garden in front of their family and friends in a wonderful display last Thursday afternoon. A few of the beautiful Easter bonnet creations

the manager of the business Alan Hungerford recently invited the children to visit the new premises and satisfy their curiosity about what goes on inside the building. “Wearing hi-vis vests and with some mums, dads and nannas joining in, we were able to explore the retail shop, warehouse and workshop,” Rebecca said. “The children delivered a letter and had their request granted, leaving with some pipe offcuts for the Kindy’s digging patch. “We love engaging with our local community and would like to thank Alan and the team of the Beerwah Pump House,” Rebecca said.

Softball trials

Contributed by Jo Weir Three students from Glass House Mountains State School - Haydyn Stansfield, Annabell MackinneyClohesy and Mia De Courcy - recently attended the regional softball trials at Noosa. Elected Representatives Andrew Wallace

Federal Member for Fisher The federal Budget The 2019-20 Budget was great for Australia and even better for the Sunshine Coast. Nationally it delivers the first surplus in 12 years, $100 billion in infrastructure investment, $300 billion for schools and help with energy bills for older Australians, all while delivering $158 billion in lower income taxes. Locally, 60,000 residents in Fisher will receive a tax cut of up to $1,080 from July while more than 20,000 local businesses will benefit from lower taxes and an extended instant asset write off. For our much needed infrastructure, this Budget adds to the $3.4 billion we have already invested in the Bruce Highway and North Coast rail upgrades, with another $91.4 million to improve the Maroochydore Road Interchange on the Bruce Highway, $3.65 million to make Sunshine Coast roads safer and $12 million to rebuild the bridge over the Mayes Canal on Brisbane Road in Mooloolaba. Our strong economy also allows us to continue the Liberal National government’s record investment in schools and hospitals. In the period to 2025, we will see $266 million extra funding for schools in Fisher and an estimated $261.7 million extra for our local hospitals. This Budget invests a further $20 million into Fisher healthcare projects, which I have been fighting for, and $12 million will go to Wishlist to build low and no cost accommodation for the families of people who are undergoing treatment at Sunshine Coast’s hospitals. There is also $4.5 million committed to endED Butterfly House in Mooloolah Valley to complete construction and deliver federal supported eating disorder treatment for public patients over the next four years. A further $2.5 million was committed to the Thompson Institute to let it continue and expand its programs in youth mental health, dementia and suicide prevention for another 12 months. In the weeks to come we will be announcing much more funding for hinterland community groups from the Budget. Meet me in Landsborough I will be holding a listening post at Pioneer Park in Landsborough from 10am-12noon on Saturday, April 20. Come along and give me your feedback or tell me about the issues that are important to you! Fisher Community Awards This month’s Fisher Community Awards night was another moving and inspiring experience. We had some great winners from the hinterland. My ten-year anniversary On Thursday, March 21 I reached my tenth anniversary as the Member for Glass House. It was ten years ago that the constituents of Glass House first put their faith in a much younger, less hirsute, perhaps a tad leaner – truthfully, a lot leaner – version of me. I was humbled to be elected a member of parliament but more so representing the communities in the Glass House electorate was, is and always will be an honour beyond compare. To the residents of Glass House, I take very seriously my role as your member of parliament. I try to listen, to deliver and to speak up on your behalf. We may not have always agreed, but hopefully when we have not I have been respectful in conveying why. At the forefront I have worked hard to succeed, and in many cases I have succeeded, in delivering for our communities. To name a few, I have secured traffic lights on Steve Irwin Way at both Bowen Road and Reed Street in the Glass House Mountains, and we will soon be seeing traffic lights installed on the corner of Peachester Road and Old Gympie Road at Beerwah. A pedestrian crossings at Montville, a new flood proof bridge over the Mary River at Conondale and flashing school zone lights have been installed across the electorate. Space will not permit me to list everything we have achieved over the past ten years or what is still to achieve, so let me just take a moment to say thank you. To the constituents of Glass House, thank you for your trust, support and friendship over the past ten years. glass.house@parliament.qld.gov.au www.andrewpowell.com.au Search us on Facebook Andrew Powell

Share your adventure using the #adventuresunshinecoast on social media. Commonwealth Financial Assistance Grant Local governments across the nation have joined together to petition for the value restoration of the Commonwealth Financial Assistance Grants to at least 1% of total Commonwealth taxation revenue. Today, this sits at 0.55% but in the mid-1990s, the value was about 2% of total Commonwealth taxation revenue. At a recent ordinary meeting our council unanimously resolved to support this movement for increased support and I believe it’s crucial that all major political parties contest this issue at the upcoming federal election. Difficult-to-locate sports Council has endorsed the regional facilities plan for difficult to locate sports for the Sunshine Coast, Noosa and Gympie council areas, recognising that it is beyond our council’s funding capacity. A collaborative regional approach will see improvement in facilities across a wider area. Aviation, motorcycling, shooting and competitive powered water sports are covered in this plan. The complete plan is available on council’s website, https://sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au. Biosphere will celebrate people and nature I’m excited to share that council is proposing a nomination for the region to receive UNESCO recognition as an international site of excellence known as a biosphere. A biosphere is an area of natural beauty where people live and work. They are places, just like our region, where active conservation sits alongside responsible development and people living sustainably. Becoming a biosphere would further enhance the Sunshine Coast’s national and international reputation, amongst other benefits. I would encourage rural producers of our region to become involved in this initial nomination process and be confident that it will not diminish rights to farming practices, but instead provide a greater local, national and international branding opportunity for your products. Health &Beauty Are you getting a flu shot? State Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Steven Miles has advised that if you are planning to have a flu shot the best time to get vaccinated is between mid-April and the end of May to ensure the best protection during the peak of the flu season this year. This means you can start booking in with your GP or pharmacist now. The Queensland Government provides free vaccines for children under age five, pregnant women, Queenslanders over the age of 65 and all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. These vaccines are now on their way to providers and eligible Queenslanders should book in from mid to late April to get their free jab. All other Queenslanders can buy the vaccine from their doctor or immunisation provider. Queensland’s Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young said while it was never too late to be vaccinated, timing should be considered. “The latest expert advice is that while protection from vaccination is expected to last for the whole

Acupuncture

season, the best protection is provided in the three to four months following vaccination,” she said. “Flu season in Queensland is typically from June to September, with the peak usually in August. “That’s why we recommend vaccinating sometime between mid-April through to the end of May to ensure the best protection during the peak of the season. “It’s also important for the public to be aware that the vaccine isn’t immediately effective – it generally takes ten to 14 days to be fully protected after vaccination. “Everyone needs to be vigilant when it comes to the flu, as the complications can be deadly. “The message remains the same: get vaccinated every year because it is the best way of protecting yourself against the flu. “Basic hygiene practices will also alleviate the spread of flu, such as proper hand washing, covering a cough with a tissue and staying home when sick,” Dr Young said.

Out & About Delicious patterns Last Friday night Vianta Espresso at Beerwah hosted the opening of Jacky Lowry’s exhibition Delightful Details featuring plant-based collagraph prints. The artworks are created through a printmaking technique that is especially suited to capturing details of the patterns in plants. They capture the shapes, patterns and vein arrangements of leaves, leaf shapes of small plants and branches in interesting arrangements, and grasses in calligraphic curves. Hand colouring with water colour highlights the details. The works include both the collagraph prints and the printing plates used to make the prints. Jacky’s exhibition Delightful Details will hang at Vianta Arts, 70 Simpson Street Beerwah, until April 28.

On ANZAC Day if you are attending the main service at Landsborough at 9.30am or at Glass House Mountains at 11.30am you are likely to see Sammy the Labrador cross cruising through the crowds to receive donations for Legacy. Sammy became a Glass House resident in March after he became a foster fail. His owners are Steven Tisdell, a returned veteran, and Michelle Davison, a volunteer for the Glasshouse Country RSL Sub Branch. Sammy will have collection buckets and, as he is a Generation Z (Generation Z are comfortable with technology and social media), he will have a card reader on the day for credit/debit card donations. If you or your children would like to say hi to Sammy, he loves pats and handshakes and he will happily appear in selfies as well.

If you love to poke around someone else’s garden for great ideas or inspiration, then over the Easter weekend (Saturday and Sunday) you can head to The Shambles at 85 Western Avenue, Montville from 9am–4pm both days. Wander around the shady heritage garden of the century old house and have a look at what’s for sale at the plant stall. The Shambles is a delightful example of an old-style country garden. It has featured on the ABC’s Gardening Australia and has won garden competitions. Over the past 25 years or so, garden owners Kyleigh ad Michael Simpson have lovingly cared for and curated a wonderful collection of cottage and heritage roses, salvias, ferns, orchids, palms and cycads, azaleas camellias, collections of natives as well as fruit trees and much, much more. Entry is $6 for adults and children are free. The funds raised this year will go to Western Queensland Drought Appeal where residents are now dealing with floods as well. To find out more about the property you can check their website www.montvillegarden.com and Facebook page (search The Shambles Montville).

Backyard wildlife

One person’s weed can be another’s favourite plant and the latter is certainly the case for me when it comes to the bleeding heart (Homalanthus populifolius). These adaptable rainforest pioneers are naturally great for growing on the edge of rainforests, where they can be annoying for farmers as they start sneaking into pasture. They are a very fast-growing small tree reaching a height of about 6m, with a similar, if not wider, spread in the canopy. They are also a beautiful shade tree for the garden and any revegetation project in rainforest country. Where bleeding hearts have been planted along our gravel driveway, we always have the beautiful little emerald doves on the ground eating the fallen seed. Brown cuckoo doves enjoy the fruit when it is ripening on the tree as do bower birds, cat birds and Lewin’s honeyeaters to name a few. The common name comes from the heart-shaped leaves turning blood red when they age, which makes for a spectacular contrast against the verdant foliage. Bleeding hearts are fast to mature, can fruit within 2-3 years and will fruit every year thereafter. The fruit are small (about 5mm) and are formed in clusters that turn purple when ripe and split to reveal a seed covered in an oily yellow aril. It's a beautiful fast-growing tree that can fit into most gardens and provide shade for you to enjoy and habitat for shadeloving plants. It is also a great food source for our local birds. It’s hard to go past a bleeding heart. Spencer and his wife Karen Shaw run Forest Heart Nursery 20 Coral Street, Maleny in Maleny. Their nursery concentrates on local native plants, 07 5435 2193 bush foods, timber trees, native gardens, fruit trees, nonOPEN Tue - Fri 9am-5pm invasive exotics, tools and equipment, garden and ecology Sat 8am - 2:00pm education, books, DVDs, art and so much more.

Loss of rental income: this comprises more than half of all landlord insurance claims. Malicious and accidental damage: this can range from claims for specific repairs to clean-ups. Water damage: this involves damage to the property from leaky appliances or faulty plumbing. Storm damage: this is a major reason why properties are damaged in areas that are prone to storm/weather disasters. Tenant death: though sad, this is a surprisingly common issue that landlords encounter.

From the churches Music in the hills of Maleny St George’s Anglican Church Maleny is becoming a music centre. Each week the sounds of choir practice can be heard, as well as a music lesson or two from the hall, and now have established a concert series, with the first to be held on Saturday, April 27 at 2pm in the church. Priest-in-charge the Reverend Jeanette Jamieson is a trained musician and singer and she initiated the series because of the good acoustics and ambiance of the space. “St George’s is a lovely venue in the hills of Maleny and that is why we called our series St George’s-in-the Hills, reminiscent of St Martinin the-Fields in Trafalgar Square that has a long history of beautiful music, Jeanette said. “We want to cater for lovers of small group choral

‘Mad Mike’ and ‘Krazy Ken’ deciding a drawn game at Dunsborough WA There was no play on the lawn on Thursday because of inclement weather. This however is good for the grass which we want to be in great shape for the regional tournament which is being played this week on April 9-10. Sunday, March 31 saw the first good weather for a while and Vince Carbery and Frances Harper used the time well to find the hoop holes for the half courts in preparation for the visit by the Range Care group this week. Nick Cram and Vince played a handicap game against Donna Manning and Stuart Craig winning 125. Sarah Widin played well against Anne McLennan from Sunnyside, Bundaberg to win 14-4. The new sail from the Rotary Club proved to be a great success providing an excellent viewing area for the games. It has arrived just in time for the Sunshine Coast Regional Championships being held at our lawns. It is and will be greatly appreciated by the players and visitors. The Range Care group had another good day on Tuesday, April 2 in picture perfect conditions. Well done to all those who came down to help. Last Wednesday Ken Barker played golf croquet at the Dunsborough Club in Western Australia as part of an ongoing competition with a non-croquet playing friend Michael Chan where they play a session of croquet and a session of links golf. The stakes are a bottle of whisky, Cointreau or the equivalent. Ken and Mike would like to thank the Dunsborough Club for being so welcoming and for a wonderful afternoon of play. Coaching for beginners and others is available on the picturesque lawns at the bottom of the Maleny Showground from 8-10am on Saturdays. These are popular sessions in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. With the start of the cooler months, play days revert to the earlier starting time of 1pm for games to begin at 1.30pm on Thursdays and Sundays. Our web address is https://rangecroquetatmaleny.org.au. For details contact president Vince Carbery on 5494 2193 or secretary Priscilla Vickers on 5494 3555.

ARIES March 21 - April 20 The planet Jupiter is about to reverse in the sign of Sagittarius, which is a compatible fire sign to yours. Probably best to put some plans and projects on hold if they involve spending large amounts of money in any way. Better to research a future purchase rather than actually make one! Balance your cheque book. Review budgets. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 There will be a busy couple of days ahead of you for multi-tasking. Over the weekend the planet Pluto influences projects to become easily completed. Later in the week favours family life. You may be nervous about a financial matter or a rocky relationship. This is because there are a couple of days with a roller coaster of feelings. GEMINI May 22 – June 23 It may seem like someone is reneging on a promise but we suggest that you do not give up on that person, or a deal, just yet. It may need another three or four months to develop. This is because the new Moon last week is balancing out all the energies that you have been dealing with since last January. New doors open now. CANCER June 24 - July 22 A lot of feelings need to be reined in this week. Stay measured and focused. Trust your super instincts to guide you. With the planet Jupiter now ready to reverse its tracks, balance work with good sleep periods. The star patterns favour shopping for bargains under new Moon aspects still operating this week. Business travel productive.

Week Beginning 10/04/2019

manager of the hotel, out of breath from running up the stairs. "The Hilton doesn't mind you sunbathing on the roof but we would very much appreciate you wearing a bathing suit as you did yesterday." "What difference does it make?" Joan asked calmly. "No one can see me up here and, besides, I'm covered with a towel." "Not exactly," said the embarrassed man. "You're lying on the dining room skylight."

LEO July 23 – August 22 With the planet Jupiter reversing through its sign, some hopes and promises you have been banking on seem to lose the potential to deliver in terms of creativity. Everything just needs time to gestate over the next four months. Planetary energies suggest that good business ‘plums’ go to those who work hard. New travel agendas. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 The weekend may see you awaken with joy in your heart as you get through scruffy details you can enjoy the comforts and pleasures of great companionship. The planet Saturn supports conservative values now and older people may offer sage advice. Make good use of materials on hand as the planets discourage waste now. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 Perhaps a member of the family, or a business partner, could provide a reality check. This may be with regard to travel, transportation or a new car. We suggest that ‘if things are not broke’, then hold off for four months and then everything moves much better. It’s fine to think big but you need some solid facts now. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 With the planet Jupiter beginning its retrograde reverse cycle, keep an eye on too much casual money spending. You will need better resource management. Look for ways to have people around you in stable support. You may need to receive that kind of companionship from another. A temporary glitch involves technology.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 – 21 December 22 Do not give up on a hope, or dream or promise, if it seems to lose some of its sparkle. This all about the planet Jupiter moving in reverse cycle and after four months everything comes back to shimmer and shine brightly again. Travel brings complications which means that lofty concepts and plans are out of reach. Scenery changes. CAPRICORN December 23 - 19 January 19 New financial considerations are encouraged by a dynamic energy between Saturn and Pluto. There are upbeat aspects involving a friendly gathering that warms the heart. Try something new after the weekend when the Moon directs cosmic energy towards your sector of wider horizons. Avoid carelessness with love or money. AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 If any hopes get dashed over the next four months everything will be revived after that. The first quarter Moon at this time encourages cooperation with partners and co-workers. Over the weekend questions of ethics arise. The planet Mercury changes signs at the end of the week emphasising news and information now. PISCES February 20 - March 20 There is a Pluto aspect which may shift your role within an organisation. The week sees graceful Venus in a pattern to bring a favourable twist to sociable activities. There is an emphasis on multi-tasking. There may be reasons to celebrate perhaps with a beautiful gift or a lovely meal. Good supportive feelings flow deepening friendships.

While on holidays Joan spent time sunbathing on the roof of her hotel. She wore a bathing suit on the first day but on the second day she decided that no one could see her way up there so she slipped out of it for an overall tan. She had hardly begun when she heard someone running up the stairs. She was lying on her stomach, so she just pulled a towel over her rear. "Excuse me miss," said the flustered assistant

Smile bright with Dental Excel.... Dr David Marley Dr David Marley has 45 years of extensive experience and has developed a great interest in restorative dentistry and full mouth rehabilitation as well as great belief in the benefits of cosmetic dentistry. “I always believe that a healthy mouth and an attractive smile are a great asset which should be nurtured and valued. Healthy teeth are acknowledged to have a great part to play in

supporting good general health,” David says. David still keeps up to date with new innovations in his field such as his experience with surgical implants. He enjoys sharing this professional knowledge with his patients to assist improving quality of life for all. David said their aim is to provide a comprehensive service to the local community for many years to come.

Dr Finbarr O’Sullivan Dr Finbarr O’Sullivan (BDS) originally qualified in Liverpool in the UK back in 2005. He gained two years experience with the UK’s National Health Service before spending four years in private practice in Ireland. He has a particular interest in and enthusiasm for dental implants; both to replace missing teeth and to retain those

annoying loose dentures. He believes that the huge leaps in technology during recent times have changed the level of treatment on offer. Finbarr also holds a postgraduate certificate in cosmetic restorative dentistry (UK) which gives him the added expertise when restoring a beautiful smile.

Dr Tiffany Chan Dr Tiffany Chan qualified as a dentist at the University of Liverpool UK in 2010 and upon graduating, she went on to work in the Community Dental Service through the National Health Service where she treated many patients with dental phobia, children and special needs patients. This experience enhanced her people skills in putting

people at ease in the dental surgery. She is gentle, great with children and those who just really hate going to the dentist! Tiffany has a great interest in extractions and wisdom teeth removal and has completed an intensive oral surgery course with maxillofacial surgeons in Cambodia.

Dr Shirly Atia Dr Shirly Atia completed her Dental Hygiene Degree in Canada and worked as a dental hygienist for seven years before completing a Bachelor of Dental Surgery at James Cook University in Cairns. She has completed her general practice residency in Queensland Health providing dental care to Indigenous communities.

Shirly is extremely passionate about preventive dentistry but enjoys all areas of dentistry including fillings, crown and bridge, aesthetic dentistry and root canals. Shirly ensures all her patients receive the best possible treatment and is committed to providing high quality dentistry in a warm, gentle and welcoming environment.

Dr Raj Kengaiha Dr Raj Kengaiha was originally educated in India and completed his dental degree at the prestigious Bangalore University in 1997, followed by working in busy dental practices in India before moving with his family to Australia in 2013. Although interested in all aspects of dentistry, Raj has particular passions for endodontic (root

canal treatment) and orthodontic (braces). He is doing additional training in orthodontics, participating in a Mini Residency which formed part of his Excellence of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics (EODO) training. Raj has recently gained accreditation to provide Fastbraces orthodontic treatment – both simple and advanced.

Susan, Gail, Helen, Karen and Colleen Every time you step through the doors at Dental Excel Beerwah you are welcomed with a big smile from the friendly team of ladies that make up the reception and dental assistance team. The ladies bring over 80 years combined customer care and dental support experience to their roles. While some people may feel a bit nervous about visiting a dentist, the staff at

Dental Excel Beerwah are dedicated to making patients feel as relaxed and comfortable as possible. Empathy, care and compassion (as well as great multi-tasking skills!) are all personal attributes the support ladies share with patients. Why not talk to the ladies about no interest payment plans, and gain the smile you deserve this year!
