MAY 10 2017

Hi Everyone

W

hile I haven’t actually got around to pulling all my winter woollies out of the cupboard yet – generally this is a task I do on the night before ANZAC Day, when I am trying to work out what level of warmth is going to be required for the Dawn Service – I have definitely noticed that the days and nights are once again cooling down. Then last week I saw the flyer for the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre’s Winter Market on Saturday May 27 from 9am to noon letting people know if they need warm clothes, then come along and pick some up in exchange for a silver coin. Then on Monday I got a call from a lady who wanted to tell me that another community group had set up a clothes rack in the laneway beside Supa IGA where people who needed a jumper or coat could simply take one off the rack and, if anyone had winter items they were no longer using, they could just place them on the rack. The Maleny Neighbourhood Centre has also put the call out for anyone who would like to donate good quality, clean and laundered items that can be sold to drop them off at the centre by next Monday. And it all got me thinking, we all talk about Spring Cleaning, but maybe we need to think a bit more about Winter Cleaning. This is a great time to declutter the wardrobe and give away winter jumpers and coats when people need them! Regards,

A cowboy from Mooloolah is currently leading the National Rodeo Association Senior Series. At Gunnedah recently, bull rider Ian Day won the Gundy Pub Over 40s Bull Ride, and he then placed third in both the over 40s (senior) ride and third in the novice bull ride at Dayboro the following weekend. Ian is 41 and rode bulls for a year when he was 18. When he turned 40 he decided it was time to give it a go again and it's paying off. He has regularly placed at rodeos since returning to the sport and is looking forward to his hometown rodeo in Mooloolah on July 22. He gets on a bull every weekend because he loves the challenge. It’s not something everyone can do well. "When you get a qualified ride it's a massive achievement – it makes me feel young and alive," Ian said. Former Glasshouse Christian College Student, Wesley McDonald (now from the Mary Valley), came first in the poddy calf ride at Dayboro. Wesley is 11 years old and in his third year of competing in rodeo, and you will also be able to see him competing at the Mooloolah Rodeo this year.

Labor endorses state candidate for Tibrogargan Queensland Labor has formally endorsed Brent Hampstead as the Labor candidate for Tibrogargan (formerly Glass House) in the forthcoming state election.

Landsborough

Brent secured a massive 19% swing in Glass House at the last state election, coming within 450 votes of unseating Newman government minister Andrew Powell. Brent said it was an honour to again stand for Labor on Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk’s team. “I’ll be talking myself hoarse and wearing out shoe leather right up until election day to win over the people of Tibrogargan,” said Mr Hampstead. “The townships and communities of our region have been taken for granted by the LNP for far too long. A prime example of this neglect is the hollow promises made by federal members over the Sunshine Coast University Hospital training places, while our state representatives sat by in deafening silence. “Only Labor will deliver world-class health and education, and the opportunity for locals to find work close to home." A Maleny resident, Brent has strong connections to the local community, including his work as a committee member of Above The Blue, a collective of local musicians raising funds for mental health services. Brent brings vast experience to his candidacy, having worked for twenty years in senior levels

Minister for Main Roads Mark Bailey with Labor candidate Brent Hampstead of the music industry, run his own locally-based small business, and his current position of media and communications officer for the Labor Party. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said Brent Hampstead would be a powerful voice for Tibrogargan. “I want Brent on my team for his passion and commitment to the hinterland communities,” Premier Palaszczuk said. “He fought hard at the last election to stop the cuts and privatisation agenda of Newman, Nicholls and Powell.” Minister for Main Roads, Energy and Water Supply, Mark Bailey, said in Glass House Mountains on Friday that Brent Hampstead had the right qualities to be a strong Labor representative for the hinterland region. “Brent Hampstead is a tenacious fighter,” said Minister Bailey. “He took a safe LNP seat and made it the most marginal electorate on the Sunshine Coast. “People need strong representation in the local area and Brent will certainly do that,” he said.

New pine plantation harvesting signage An active plantation forest harvesting area is a high risk work site and dangers to personal safety are very real even if no harvesting machinery or trucks are immediately present. “HQPlantations has recently upgraded its harvest contractor signage to be more visible and more easily understood by the public to make harvesting work sites safer,” announced Islay Robertson, Chief Operating Officer. The company consulted harvesting contractors and a safety signage expert to come up with a suite of signs to convey the significance of the risks and the importance of complying with the signs. People visiting plantations need to be aware that they cannot enter any roads or tracks in an active forest harvesting area at any time of the day or night for the entire duration of the harvesting period. Doing so could put their own or other peoples’ lives at risk. Barriers and ‘Do Not Proceed’ signs apply to all people in trucks and cars or on motorcycles, bicycles and horses, and must be observed even by people hiking, walking or exercising their dogs. HQPlantations sustainably manages about 200,000 hectares of pine plantations throughout Queensland, with the majority located in state forest. New signs have also been introduced for fire management to alert people to prescribed burning operations. “Updating this signage is part of our commitment to strong forest stewardship and safety management to ensure a safe environment for forestry workers and the general public – to make sure that every day, everyone returns home safe,” said Mr Robertson.

Calls for ban on gambling advertising

Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace MP has called for a national ban on television advertising for sports gambling during times when children are likely to be watching. Mr Wallace said, “I am absolutely sick to death of the plethora of gambling ads that are on television. It’s got to the point where I believe that our kids are unable to disassociate for themselves the gambling that pervades sport from the sport itself.” “I’m not suggesting that we ban gambling, but what I am suggesting is that we ban the advertising of gambling during hours that kids would be watching television. I think a sensible time would be up to 8.30pm,” Mr Wallace said. Mr Wallace has listed a motion for debate in the Australian Parliament on the subject, and hopes that this motion will be debated when Private Members’ Business resumes on May 22. The motion asks Parliament to agree that “gambling impacts in disastrous ways upon the most vulnerable in our society and that these ads only serve to exacerbate an already pressing problem in our communities.” “It’s tough enough to be living in modern day society with the cost of living pressures that are on families at the moment, without having people’s wages lost to gambling,” Mr Wallace said. “Housing affordability has been in the news a lot lately, but one thing that came out of our Sunshine Coast Housing Affordability Summit last week is that it’s not just about the cost of constructing a house; it’s intertwined into social issues.” “Let’s not continue to add to the cost of living by perpetuating this myth that it’s just fun to gamble. The house always wins. Let’s not teach our kids from a very young age that there’s no differentiation between sport and gambling. Let’s let kids be kids.”

Following a competition to find the Sunshine Coast’s ‘undiscovered baking legend’ conducted by Yellow Pages and the QCWA organisation, Reesville resident Terry Rowan has been revealed as the cover star for the local directory which was distributed at the end of April. A long term cooking enthusiast and member of the QCWA Maleny branch, Terry features on the front cover of this year’s 2017 Yellow Pages and White Pages for the Sunshine Coast, Hinterland and Caboolture area – and her people-pleasing recipe for pear, walnut and cinnamon cake appears on the inside front cover. Terry was nominated to enter by her local branch members late last year and after completing an application form and submitting the recipe (which was originally given to her by a close friend a number of years ago), she didn’t think much more about it all. When she was contacted about a month later to say that she had been chosen with the winning recipe she was surprised but delighted. “It was really a big surprise when I was told that I had won,” she said. “After that everything happened quite quickly. The organisers arranged for a professional photographer to come out – who did a wonderful job – and it was all a bit exciting.” Terry has always loved to cook and she appreciates that people who enjoy cooking are the ones that can be counted on to be involved in supporting local community activities and groups with their passion.

Terry has lived in Reesville for 17 years and has been involved with her local CWA branch for the past two years. “Catering for our local events, it really is a pleasure to work with the other CWA ladies on something that I’m happy to do!” says Terry. Finally, Terry’s tip for successful baking is to always make sure you use baking paper!

Industrial land makeover The light industrial precinct on the eastern approach to Landsborough is on the verge of a transformation. A recent development application lodged with Sunshine Coast Council by AGM Pastoral Pty Ltd will see an extensive industrial unit and warehouse complex built on lands adjacent to the Happy Snack Company factory. The 7,400sqm block between Caloundra Road and Kelly Court is planned to house 17 industrial units within four separate buildings, accompanied by 41 car parking spaces and almost 1,500sqm of landscaped grounds. The units range in size from approximately 155sqm to 347sqm in total area, providing a range of spaces for small to medium sized enterprises.

DENTURE CLINIC CARING FOR YOU!!

Brian Stuart-Nairne According to the development report, as the road access will be off Kelly Court at the rear, the development will not compromise the safety and efficiency of Caloundra Road (and/or Steve Irwin Way). To read more about the proposal, go to www. pdonline.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and search for MCU17/0089.

Learner drivers needed for road safety research More volunteers are needed for USC research that aims to better understand how the driving behaviours of young motorists change when they progress from having L-plates to P-plates. Dr Bridie Scott-Parker is seeking learner drivers aged 16-20 who have recorded about 80 hours of driving in their logbooks. The USC Senior Research Fellow said while learner drivers were involved in relatively few incidents on the road, young people on provisional licences faced a much higher risk of crashing. “We know that young drivers change their driving behaviour when they pass their driving tests and gain red Provisional 1 driver licences,”

BEERWAH

she said. “What we don’t know is in what ways they change their behaviour.” The research project, involves smartphones being placed in the cars of learner drivers so that trip characteristics, such as where they have driven and when, can be recorded for at least one month. The same information is then recorded by the same motorists during the first six months of driving as P-platers. Dr Scott-Parker said young drivers and their parents would also be asked to complete some online surveys and app-based surveys throughout the study. To participate in the study, contact Dr ScottParker at arru@usc.edu.au.

Dedication to the gardening cause By Greg Brown Make a diary date for June 10 and 11, when the Maleny Garden Club will once again hold their renowned weekend event – Gardening on the Edge. With it now being in its thirteenth year, Gardening on the Edge has become one of the premier garden weekends on the Queensland events calendar. But it doesn’t just all happen spontaneously. With exactly a month to go, we asked the event convenor, Dot Jupp, how it’s all going so for this year. “Everything is falling into place. We have the six open gardens all organised – three in Flaxton and three in Maleny, and the Garden Market at the showgrounds will be bigger than it’s ever been,” says Dot. Dot has been the event convenor for the past four years, having moved from Perth with partner Peter seven years ago. It only took Dot a year to work out that she needed to join with the Maleny Garden Club to learn more about gardening in the subtropics.

“We didn’t really do much gardening in Perth. And what we did was suited to sandy alkaline soils, with dry summers, low humidity and very different weather patterns. “So moving to somewhere with such fertile soils and lush vegetation was a bit daunting at first.” But Dot and Peter soon fell into the swing of things when they started to renovate the gardens and landscapes of their one and a half acre Flaxton property. “The garden had the bones … it just needed to be fleshed out,” explains Dot. “We joined with the Barung Landcare ‘Gardens for Wildlife’ program, so that and the Maleny Garden Club has been a big help. “Looking after the garden really is a joy, not a chore at all.” Dot had never been involved in organising any garden events before when she put up her hand to take on Gardening on The Edge. But it must be the ordered mind of an accountant (that was her past life) which helped her structure and plan. “We basically start planning for the next one as soon the current event has finished. It really is a year round project. “But it’s made so much easier by having the help of a great committee and then over 80 volunteers on the day. And without the enormous generosity and effort of the garden owners themselves, the weekend just wouldn’t happen.” This year is to be Dot’s last in the job, and she is handing over the reins to a new convenor.

“It’s been incredibly rewarding getting to know the other garden club members who volunteer and the people who generously open their gardens each year. “I’ll still be involved in helping to make it all happen … I’d even like to try it from the other side and hopefully in the future our place will be one of the open gardens.” Well Dot (and Peter) … you’ve got just over twelve months to go if they want to be included in 2018, so there’s no time to waste. Gardening on the Edge (June 10 and 11) is an open garden trail and garden market/expo providing an opportunity for locals and visitors to see six beautiful gardens at the one time and to attend the Garden Market at the Maleny Showgrounds. Each year up to 2,000 people visit gardens and contribute to increased business activity on the Range. The event is the main fundraiser for the Maleny Garden Club, and since 2005 has raised in excess of $100,000, with the money being distributed to local community organisations.

Optus tower stalls

It seems like Optus have fallen foul of Sunshine Coast Council for not paying their bill – $8,250 to be precise. In a story we brought to you recently, Optus have made a development application to council for the construction of a mobile phone tower on Barrs Road, Glass House Mountains. Council have been forced to write to Optus informing them that the application is deemed “not properly made” due to non-payment of their application fees. According to the letter, dated May 3, Optus have 20 days to pay the $8,250 otherwise the application will lapse. As Optus’ net profit has been reported recently at $188 million in the quarter to December 2016, it’s a stretch to see why Australia’s second biggest telco has seemed to default on an $8,250 bill.

Businesses owners’ time to thrive The 2017 Queensland Small Business Week will be held from May 15 to 20, with the week being a celebration of small business and giving business owners the opportunity to learn and acquire new ideas, skills and tools so they can take their businesses to the next level. As part of the celebrations Maleny Chamber is offering a great opportunity for local businesses to attend some quick and practical training and the best part is there are no costs for Maleny Chamber members, and only some small charges for non-members who are very welcome to attend. The sessions will be presented by Susan Maynard, Destination Development Manager at Visit Sunshine Coast (VSC), where she implements and manages VSC workshop and industry development programs.

She is passionate about giving practical tips to get great results. On Tuesday May 16 she will be presenting a session on ‘Getting the best out of your digital marketing’ from 7am to 9am at The Orangery at Maleny (nonmembers $20 which includes breakfast). Then on Wednesday May 17 she will present the session ‘Walk away with your marketing plan’ at the House of Laurels from 5.30pm to 7pm (non-members $15 which includes finger food/ refreshments). Bookings are essential and can be made by email to admin@malenycommerce.org.au or you can book online at www.malenycommerce.org.au.

Development stalls at Gardners Falls Plans for the construction of a restaurant, 12 holiday cabins and a manager’s residence on Obi Lane South at Maleny have stalled again. The eco-tourism and hospitality development on the western side of the access road into Gardners Falls was originally approved in 2011, but not commenced within the approved four year timeframe. Consequently, the applicant (Bollaranga Pty Ltd - Taylor Willis Pty Ltd) in 2015 applied for and was granted a two year extension on the

development approval. It appears that the development timeframe expires again on May 17 this year and to date the development has not commenced. A further extension has been sought by the applicant, however no details could be found about the current request on Sunshine Coast Council’s development application portal. For more details on the development proposal, go to www.pdonline.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and search for ‘2009/510016’.

Macadamia workshop series In a coup for the Beerwah Coochin Creek Fruitgrowers Cooperative, macadamia growing expert Allan Coates is running a regular series of informative, hands-on workshops for growers in our region. According to the Coochin Creek Fruitgrowers Cooperative resident Agronomist, Jade King, Allan frequently provides workshops in the Northern Rivers and Bundaberg regions, and now, thanks to industry group Growcom and Coochin Creek Coop working as a team, locals have the chance to learn from one of the best, and at no cost! “The first workshop was held last Friday with future workshops to be every fortnight from that date,” Jade said. “Being only four hours (1pm-5pm), it is a great way to catch up on some practical information and advice on all aspects of growing macadamia nuts.” So whether you're thinking of getting into the macadamia business, have just started growing tree, have bought a property with an old orchard or are a seasoned farmer, there is something for everyone, including information about tree varieties, nutrition, soil health, fertilising, irrigation, composting and mulching, orchard floor management, canopy management, older orchard management, pest and disease issues and market trends. Each workshop will be held on various farms in the district. But places at the workshop are limited, so bookings are essential. Contact Jade on email at agronomy_service@coochincreek.com.au or text/ call her on 0405 125 791 to book your spot.

Neighbourhood Centres Week Last week was Neighbourhood Centres Week, and this year’s theme was ‘belonging’. Neighbourhood Centres, otherwise called Community Centres, are largely about creating a sense of belonging with their local community. The centres provide so much more in our communities than we may realise. While they vary in size and scope, they all aim to respond to the needs of their local communities and are managed by members of the community. One aspect that makes Neighbourhood Centres in our part of the hinterland so special, is that most are run completely or mostly by volunteers. There are five Neighbourhood Centres in our local area – Mooloolah Community Centre, Morris House Neighbourhood Centre (Landsborough), Beerwah Youth and Community Centre (BYACC), Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre and Maleny Neighbourhood Centre. The two Hinterland Community Development Program workers, Ana Greenfield and Natasha Odgers, work alongside the Neighbourhood Centres and other community organisations with common values and goals. They say the centres offer a place and social fabric for people in local communities to strengthen and be supported together. “Through various activities, programs, relationships and information, the Neighbourhood Centres work towards building a sense of place and sense of community in their local areas,” Ana said. “The centres also play an important

Neighbourhood Centre week was celebrated at Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre with a community barbecue role in supporting those disadvantaged in our communities through emergency relief.” Natasha said, “When we asked local volunteers about what makes Neighbourhood Centres so valuable, the main benefits boiled down to social networking, friendships, reduced social isolation, support, community spirit, collaboration, purpose, comradery and local people volunteering to help their local community.” The Neighbourhood Centres offer opportunities for people to connect with others, learn new skills, participate in community projects, express community needs and give to the community (inkind or cash). New Beef Steward at the Maleny Show Bellthorpe local Ken Scott will be the Chief Steward for the Stud Beef Cattle section of this year’s Maleny Show. Originally based at Roma, he has been running cattle on his properties since 1970, and certainly knows a thing or two about beef. He currently runs cattle on 40 acres at Maleny. Ken’s eldest grandson Hugh will be flying up from Narrabri to help out as a roving interviewer over the two days and Jade Tighe will be the assisting steward. With the various show areas, animal nurseries, and with the Beef section all under cover, Ken believes that the Maleny Show has the best facilities in Queensland. “I’m feeling confident about the show and have a great offsider, Jade, assisting,” Ken said. “Interest this year has really picked up – especially now that there is a bit of money in cattle. Enthusiasm is at a high that I haven’t seen before, so we should have a fantastic roll up this year.” Friday at the show will see the judging of the Led Steers and Heifers as well as the Junior Handlers Classes and Junior Judges Competition. Schools from throughout the Sunshine Coast and South East Queensland will be getting involved in the junior competition as well as competing in the annual ‘tug of war’ competition commencing at 4.30pm. Saturday will see the general stud classes judged and new this year is the ‘Beef Trifecta Inter Show Championship’. For program details and registration see the show booklet or visit www.malenyshowsociety.org.au.

Leanda Talks – Nurturing the nurturers Are you the nurturer in your household? Are you the one who is the go to? There are just some people who seem to be the magnet for others to lean on or to share their problems with. Are you the listener, the advisor, the one with the Leanda Weynton biggest hugs? and Naturopath ND r che Tea Yoga This can be a very rewarding role and most people would say it’s just what you do and, yes, that’s true, because as a nurturer it comes naturally to give … but are we topping back up? It’s a very unselfish act to take steps to improve yourself in areas of health and personal growth. Sometimes in the role of the nurturer you are giving, giving and giving by listening and giving out advice and solutions, but not taking time to reflect this in your own life. The thing is that if we keep giving out without refilling our tanks we are literally running on empty, leaving us feeling tired, drained or even used. Every nurturer needs to be nurtured. Are you making ‘you time’ to nurture yourself? Remember on a plane, the flight attendant always says, “In the unexpected case of an emergency place your oxygen mask on your face first and then place it on the face of your child and others.”

Are you eating healthy? Do you look after your body? Are your moods stable? Are you getting the things done needed for personal growth? It’s important to set aside some time to restore your own needs. Whether it is an exercise or yoga class, a walk or reading a book. What you do isn’t the goal, it’s taking the time to restore yourself and fuel your tank. Who is nurturing the nurturer? Who is making sure that you are getting the time, attention and emotional support that you need and deserve? When it comes down to it, everyone must take responsibility for themselves, after all when the best advice is given it is what gets done with it that will make the difference.

“Your highest happiness lies in your being ever ready in desiring to learn, and to behave properly. The more you improve yourself, the more you will elevate others around you. The self-improving man is the increasingly happy man. The happier you become, the happier will be the people around you.” Paramahansa Yogananda

Dog Shows coming in May

Contributed by Helen Weil As usual the Sunshine Coast Kennel Club will be hosting three dog shows on the third weekend in May at the Beerwah Sportsground. The first show is on Friday evening (May 19) commencing at 5pm with sweepstakes and Junior Handler judging. Junior Handlers are youngsters 7 to 19 years of age competing to be the most skilful at showing dogs. This is followed by alphabetical breed judging in separate group rings. On Saturday May 20 the show starts at the same time of 5pm in the same order of procedure. Sunday May 21 sees an early start at 8.30am for the Open Show and 9am for the Championship Show. Open shows provide trainee judges with handson practical experience judging dogs. They are complete shows right through to a Best in Show winner but there are no points awarded towards champion titles. The Championship Show is where points are awarded and exhibitors can make their dogs Champions when they have earned 100 points, Grand Champions with 1000 points, and Supreme Champions when they add a number of Best in Show and Best in Group wins to their tally. Entry for spectators is free. Everyone is welcome. Just come along to the Beerwah Sportsground and enjoy watching the judging of the breeds and mixing with the exhibitors. Most are more than keen to have a chat and share their dogs with you. Catering is provided with an excellent canteen menu and a coffee van in attendance. There are often a few ‘doggy product’ stalls and the atmosphere is always great. Do come along and spend some time with us. For more information please contact David on 0488 947 444 or Helen on 5494 7496.

Street Party in Beerwah on again

The team from Celebrate Glasshouse Country is planning another Street Party, to be held on Friday October 20 from 4pm to 9pm. The last one in 2015 was a huge hit, with over 8,000 people attending. The party is extending from Simpson Street into Beerwah Marketplace, so we can fit in more fun and free activities. This is a Glasshouse Country event, so we invite community groups, schools, businesses, artisan stall holders, musicians and food vendors to participate. In order to register your interest, please complete an Expression of Interest form, which is found on the website www.celebrateglasshousecountry.com.au. This form must be submitted by June 30 so the committee can organise the event. If you don’t have access to a computer, ring Judy on 0408 445 988 and request a copy of the form. Judy Tomlinson, President, says the committee has some exciting activities lined up already, and with the financial assistance of local sponsors, all activities will be free of charge. The Beerwah Hotel jumped in first to become a major sponsor, and other businesses are getting ready to confirm their contributions. Over the coming weeks, more information will be shared to keep everyone up to date. There will be a wide range of volunteer opportunities, and many ways for local businesses to promote their goods and services. Like Celebrate Glasshouse Country on Facebook to keep up with the latest news. To find out more you can contact the organisers by emailing info@celebrateGC.com.au.

Zontians save birthing mothers

For almost ten years the Zonta Club of Blackall Range has been saving mothers and babies in developing countries with a rudimentary ‘birthing kit’. An estimated 8000 kits have been assembled over this time and they have been sent to Africa, India or Papua New Guinea. Last year the club supported birthing mothers in Uganda. Originally the idea of an Adelaide Zontian, this program has escalated in Australia under the Birthing Kit Foundation that distributes the kits to wherever there is a need. Blackall Range coordinator Dot Jupp said it was unbelievable in the modern world that the basic contents of a birthing kit were all that was available to mothers in these countries. “The kit contains a sheet of plastic, two gloves, a small piece of soap, a scalpel and five gauze squares,” Dot said. “They fold together in a bag roughly 100 x 150mm, and this basic material has reduced the mortality of many thousands of mothers and babies since its inception. “Every woman has the right to a clean and safe childbirth, and this aim is in accord with Zonta International’s mission to advance the status of women worldwide. The kit satisfies the seven basic requirements of a clean birth.” On the Blackall Range the Zonta Club engages the public by selling ‘Mother’s Day sponsorships’. They cost $5 each or three for $10, and each donor gets a Zonta Rose card to give to their mothers. Zonta’s partner in the Democratic Republic of Congo advised that a few years ago a midwifery seminar in two centres distributed 4,000 birthing kits, with considerable difficulty. If you would like to sponsor birthing kits for the Blackall Range Zonta Club program you could ring the sponsorship coordinator Gillian Allen on 5499 9985.

View Club

Contributed by Janet Kitchin A group from Glasshouse Country View Club recently had a lovely morning with members of Caloundra Evening View Club. We enjoyed a pleasant morning tea and walk to King’s Beach in beautiful weather. Some stayed to have lunch together and hopefully more outings will be shared by our two groups. Our next lunch meeting is on May 17 at the Glasshouse Country Sports Club, 11am for 11.30 start, and our guest speaker will be a representative of The Heart Foundation who will talk to us about the warning signs of heart attacks. Our club raises funds for The Smith Family and Learning for Life Program at all our functions and activities. Anyone who would like more information about our club should contact either Lynda on 5494 7875 or Maree on 5494 6956.

The Glasshouse Country Uniting Church banner displayed by Paia Ingram, Ruth Wright and Ps Margaret Niethe was blessed on Sunday April 30 before being taken as a gift to the Gaba Gaba United Church people in Papua New Guinea by a small GHC Uniting Church group early in May. This will be the second time a group has travelled to share a cross-cultural exchange with the villagers in the seaside town of Gaba Gaba, staying in homes over the water and sharing in their everyday lives, worship and dance services. The banner was created by Paia, Ruth and Glenda Halpin, and as well as the mountains, photographs on material show those from Gaba Gaba and their Glasshouse Country hosts during their two previous visits to Glasshouse Country in the past few years. I'm sure there are a few at Glasshouse Country Care and the Uniting Church Playgroup who remember the inspiring PNG singing and dancing with much pleasure.

Environment Turning plastic trash into clean water

Solar powered 3D printers may soon solve the developing world problems of ubiquitous plastic rubbish and lack of access to clean water supply. Deakin University is currently working on the world-first technology capable of printing plumbing and sanitation supplies using discarded plastics, to be trialled in the Solomon Islands by children’s charity Plan International Australia later this year. Dr Mazher Mohammed, research fellow at Deakin’s School of Engineering, heads up the team developing the 3D printer prototype. “This kind of 3D technology can be used to rapidly replace broken plastic seals, pipes and other devices essential for water supply or sanitation. This is critical as many disaster zones and developing areas do not have reliable access to power,” Dr Mohammed said. “The important part of this project is its sustainability. Not only will the printer be able to use plastic rubbish found nearby, but it will also run off a solar powered battery.” Dr Mohammed has already produced 3D printing filaments from different types of plastic rubbish, including milk bottles from the office kitchen, to print basic plumbing parts. The printers will be trialled at Plan International Australia’s projects in the Solomon Islands later this year. Plan Australia’s Manager for Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, Tom Rankin, says the potential applications of the technology – powered by free and abundant sunshine – are “limitless”. “This technology really lends itself to developing countries, where plastic waste has exceeded the capacity of governments to manage it,” Mr Rankin said. “In the streets of Honiara, there is plastic literally everywhere. It clogs up the drains and flows out into the sea, killing marine life. Our aim is to turn this plastic into useful parts. “If we can prove the concept and get the technology working well, it can be used across a raft of different fields, not just water and sanitation. Really, you’re only limited by your imagination about what you can print. The potential for this is amazing.” Deakin University is using crowdfunding to help meet the costs of the printers’ first prototypes. So far, almost $18,000 has been raised towards the $30,000 target, with support from the English Family Foundation. Plan International Australia has also contributed $10,000 to the project, with additional financial support from Deakin’s Centre for Humanitarian Leadership and School of Engineering.

Native plums and beer-drinking butterflies

Commonly known as Scrub Ooline, native plum, solo tree or solo plum, Guilfoylia monostylis is a small (to 10m) understorey rainforest tree, found from northern NSW to the Atherton Tablelands. Scrub Ooline has drooping branches, slightly zig-zag branchlets, lime-green leaves and bright yellow, five-petalled, bell-shaped flowers appearing in spring to summer. Its grey-brown bark has wavy, longitudinal lenticels. The globular, black, shiny fruit is attractive to birds including the Satin Bowerbird (Ptilonorhynchus violaceus). Guilfoylia monostylis is a food source for caterpillars of the Tailed Emperor butterfly (Polyura sempronius). The Tailed Emperor butterfly is also known as the ‘Naughty’ butterfly as it likes to drink beer! (Jordan, F and Schwenke, H, 2005 – ‘Create More Butterflies’) So, do a butterfly a favour – plant a Scrub Ooline and provide it an alternative to beer! Barung Landcare is a leading community-based organisation working to develop ethical solutions for a sustainable future. We support local and regional community empowerment to conserve and enhance the rich diversity of natural resources of the Blackall Range and environs. Babies, Kids & Thank you, Mrs B

Contributed by Sally Joyce Peachester Playgroup recently had a special morning tea to say thanks and to wish Coral Beutel (Mrs B) best of luck when she soon leaves Peachester. Over the last few years Coral has visited our playgroup most weeks as our adopted Grandma. She has held newborns to give mums the chance for a cuppa, and read to our little ones and given them lots of cuddles and support as they have grown. She has attended kindy and school Grandparent Days for children whose grandparents live afar and has always been willing to offer timeless parenting advice, support and friendship. Coral has also been a valuable communication link between our group and other community groups, like Peachester CWA who have supported our playgroup with generous donations to fund equipment. Our children and mums have loved having Mrs B as part of our playgroup and we will miss her weekly visits. Donna Haslam created a beautiful thank you cake featuring Coral on top, and a frangipani tree originating from Coral’s famous garden was planted in our playgroup garden. Best wishes, Coral, and thank you. Peachester Playgroup meets every Tuesday from 9.15am to 11.30am in the shed behind the Peachester Hall. Bring a hat, water bottle and a piece of fruit. For more information, contact Krysty on 0400 175 134.

Cooking up a storm

The Maleny Show is less than a month away and as always there are heaps of opportunities for kids to get actively involved. One of the most popular competitions for children is the Junior Cookery Section which is divided into two age groups – section A for 11 years and under and section B for ages 12-16. There is also a primary school section for ‘decorated chocolate crackles’ where any primary or home schooled child can enter their most amazing chocolate crackle creation. The Junior Cooking competition has some wonderful opportunities for kids to express their culinary creativity with categories in Section A including decorating three arrowroot biscuits in a butterfly theme, creating gingerbread people, and making chocolate chip cookies. Section B has a more traditional style of cooking competition with prize money and Side Show Alley vouchers awarded for the best decorated cupcakes, jam drops, Anzac biscuits and more. For more details see the Show Book or visit www.malenyshowsociety.org.au.

Art exhibition

By Rachel Hatcher (Year 5) Our Year 5 classes at Glasshouse Christian College recently held an art exhibition. We created a variety of self-portraits and one example involved depicting ourselves as superheroes. Everybody’s art was so colourful and amazing. All the students invited their family to the art exhibition and a lot of people attended. My Nan and my mum came and we all had a great time looking at the art that all the students had produced. During the exhibition, everyone could also participate in a variety of activities, like taking a photo in the super hero portrait booth, creating designs with coloured shapes, framing ourselves – and we also got to draw ourselves on a biscuit. Yummy!

Communication development Communication is an important part of a child’s growth. Speech pathologist Melissa Matthews, from Talk Plus Allied Health Centre, is presenting a session at the Maleny Library on Wednesday, May 17 from 10.00am-11.30am to give those attending the opportunity to learn about communication development in the first five years. Find out how speech, language and social skills develop, and when to seek support. Learn about the benefits of early intervention. Discover ideas to help promote your child’s speech and language skills through everyday activities and play. Attendance is free, however bookings are essential. Please phone 5475 8989.

You Said It Where are the bats?

I went for a walk this morning, past what used to be the bat colony on Myla Road in Landsborough. Does anyone know what happened to our bats? Did they leave voluntarily or were they relocated because of the two new developments that are happening nearby? Perhaps one of the readers knows the answer. Silvana Wright Landsborough

Re: John Quinn’s letter (May 3)

The writer is understandably concerned about his sons' employment in the mining industry, but such self-interest cannot be allowed to outweigh the societal concerns we have with climate change. When he claims that there “is no need to” stop the Carmichael mine from proceeding, he is actually saying that anthropogenic global warming is not real, which flies in the face of all scientific evidence. We cannot declare a war on facts because it suits our personal interests. While Quinn is right that coal emissions have been cleaned up a bit – by removing more of the soot and solids – the CO2 emissions are unchanged. So-called “clean coal technology” is a misnomer. No coal plant can control its emissions of heattrapping carbon dioxide. “Clean coal” is like a healthy cigarette, it does not exist. Quinn calls for a factual debate, and these are the facts. He claims that a "staggering" amount of new jobs will be created by the Adani project, overlooking the fact that jobs created here are jobs lost from the NSW coal mining industry. Coal consumption is falling worldwide; there are no new job bonanzas to be had in this field. Quinn's sons would be well advised to retrain for jobs in the renewable energy industries. Now that's where a truly staggering expansion is already occurring. Gerry Muller Maleny

Re: Adani mine

The policies of The Australian Greens have been consistently based on recognition that massive CO2 emissions pose a clear and present danger to the very survival of ecosystems on Planet Earth, ecosystems that include us. We Greens find it astonishing that there is still a debate about opening new coal mines when alternative energy technology is forging ahead, including the means to store and deliver base-load power. The jobs of the future lie in this technology while coal mining has become so automated anyway that the jobs argument has no validity any more. The evidence that we are beset by pollution-driven warming is now undeniable except to the willingly blind. The warmer atmosphere concentrates more energy and moisture into systems like Cyclone Debbie which smashed resorts on the coast and delivered floods all the way from Bowen to the north island of New Zealand! The reef has been so severely bleached that there is little prospect of recovery because the ocean continues to warm. And while some cling to the belief that higher atmospheric CO2 will boost crop yields, the reverse is the case because the warmer climate brings crops to maturity earlier leading to smaller heads in the case of cereals. Sugar cane might benefit, but so will many weeds, and certainly the competition between plants in a natural ecosystem will become distorted. 22

Dog ownership

This is an important message to any person thinking of adopting or purchasing a dog. With dogs, research is the key. If you like a particular breed of dog go and talk to a breeder about that breed or research on the internet to see if you are suitable to own that breed. Even if you are thinking of adopting from the RSPCA or a shelter, please do not jump in and purchase on impulse because they are cute and like you. Think how unfair it is to a dog if they do not fit in yet again to another home. How heartbreaking for them. Property size – it is important to find out how many dogs you are allowed to keep by your local council, plus the rules and regulations of owning a dog. If you are in a unit you need to find out from your body corporate. If renting, ask the owner of the property. How much time are you willing to give your new dog? Not just now, but for 10 to 15 years. If you work full time, in my opinion, get a fish, guinea pig, rabbit or other suitable animal as dogs are a pack animal and need you to be around. Some dogs are happy in the backyard (not many) and some need to be with you constantly. So are you happy to have fur in your home? How much money will it cost you to have a dog? Look at costs such as training, vet costs, food, holiday care, registration, bedding, toys, flea and tick prevention, worming and so much more. This is just some information at needs investigation. Dogs can give so much love so please give your decision considerable thought. Helpful websites include www.dogsqueensland.org. au/Breeder/Index and www.purina.com.au/owninga-dog/breed-selector. Why so keen to provoke?

After 60 years of stable border tensions, the unification generation dying, and it being blatantly obvious that any aggression by North Korea would be met with annihilation by a limited nuclear exchange, why is America so keen to provoke North Korea into war? By researching ‘what natural resources does North Korea have?’ what I unearthed is both alarming and horrifying. North Korea has an estimated 66% of the worlds known deposits of Rare Earth Elements, (REEs) and presently China (her only ally) has a 90% monopoly on these treasures and it limits the sale of them to the world. These elements are necessary in all sophisticated electronics from mobile phones to guided missiles. America consumes REEs like a pig in a paw

paw paddock for its weapons program and since 1993 has deployed countless numbers of guided weapons in incursions around the world and could be struggling to keep stock pile numbers up, as China dictates terms. So it is credible to think, to break China's strategic strength with REEs, the USA is playing the WMD (weapons of mass deception) card, as with Iraq before, to gain world support to bomb and invade North Korea, eliminate the bad guys, reclaim the mines and save the world from evil, so forth and so on, everyone’s happy! However, if this reasoning is fact or fiction, the point still remains that China conceivably would be hostile at the possibility of losing her monopoly having another unfriendly state on her border, letting the west gain the upper hand, and would enter the conflict to protect her interests to the bitter end as she has done previously. Are we really going to risk conflict with China, probably nuclear? No way USA. Alan Lawson Landsborough

Yassmin was spot on

The furore created by Australian right wing and conservative politicians seeking to score political points by cruelly castigating Yassmin AbdelMageid over a Facebook post about Anzac Day is absolutely disgraceful. She was absolutely correct in drawing attention to the moral failings of Australia's current government in its despicable treatment of asylum seekers. My family fought in Greece, Crete, New Guinea, Papua, Borneo, East Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan. They have never participated in the orchestrated glorification of war, that appears to mark the increasingly stage-managed nationalistic spectacles and excesses marking this day of sorrow and remembrance. My father never marched. He was unable to do so. Why? Because he suffered badly from PTSD which was never treated, and went to his grave wondering what had happened to him during the Second World War. Like many others, he hated Anzac Day. This is what I remember. This is what Yassmin's comments brought home to me, more than any Anzac Day political posturing. Australia would do well not to forget the absolute anguish of those poor souls in those war torn countries that came to Australia for succour and never found it. Well we should remember it because this is what our soldiers fought for – freedom. There is precious little freedom on Manus and Nauru and we should all be collectively ashamed about that. Ken Dyer Landsborough

It is ugly

I would like to concur with Jo Barrett (GCM&News, May 3) regarding the new Beerwah sign recently erected at the side of the roundabout at Beerwah It is ugly, meaningless, unnecessary and in my opinion, a waste of ratepayers’ money. It is a distraction to drivers trying to decypher what it portrays and why it is needed when there is already a directional sign in the proper place on the roundabout. It looks like it was constructed from leftovers that were dumped at the Beerwah recycling centre. Councillor Baberowski could you please disclose to the people of the area and the ratepayers of the Sunshine Coast, just how much we have been slugged with the construction of this ‘whatchamacallit’? www.gcnews.com.au

The time it took to construct, materials and paid man hours would not have come cheap and in my humble opinion could have been better devoted to constructing a one way roadway leading from Turner Street, that dead end street in the centre of town that passes the Post Office, empty shops and Aldi, onto the roundabout. Something the town has needed for years. Maybe, just maybe, it would open the centre of Beerwah up properly and encourage people to frequent that part of the town on a regular basis. It would also save those impatient motorists that use the Aldi carpark as a thoroughfare to exit the area, the trouble of having to turn around and go back the way they came. Mr Baberowski, in your article in the GC&M News on May 3 it quotes you as saying "The welcome sign will work hard for years to come”. I'll bet you a couple of pots, councillor, that a one way bitumen roadway from Turner Street, straight through where the sign is, onto the roundabout, would serve the community a heck of a lot better and for a lot longer than your sign would and give life to the dead heart of Beerwah. It would be a very interesting exercise to compare the cost of constructing the roadway to what the outlay was for the Beerwah sign. Bob Watkins Peachester

Re: New sign for Beerwah

I personally love our new sign. When I drive over the overpass, the first thing I think of when seeing it, is ‘butterflies’. I think it blends in perfectly with the structures in the town centre and, knowing that the plants trailing up the main structures are to attract the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly, I think the new sign, besides welcoming people to Beerwah, displays this well with the ‘dots of colour’ on the sign. Well done Cr Baberowski. Marilyn Podmore Beerwah

Re: Power pricing

I was bemused by the letter in last week’s GC&M News from Greens candidate Sue Weber. I agree that access to cheap energy is a basic necessity for all, not just developed countries, however her reasoning regarding our increasingly expensive power is puzzling. As she pointed out, prior to 2006 power prices were falling. That was before the explosion of 'renewable energy'. This has proved not only to be inefficient but also very costly, relying on large subsidies, from other energy users, to justify its installation. Hence the dramatic rise in prices. On the issue of the Adani mine, I believe we desperately need it. We no longer have a manufacturing sector, as our unions have been so successful in pricing us out it. Our car workers were paid up to three times the wages of their US counterparts. Even our farmers have to employ overseas seasonal workers, aka backpackers, because they can't afford to pay locals. Our resources are all we have left to trade with the rest of the world. As John Quinn pointed out, India is going to get coal from somewhere so it might as well be us. There is also a security advantage. We currently seem to have all of our eggs in one basket, i.e. China. By trading with India we open up a whole new market, which can't be bad for our future. Derek Browning Glass House Mountains www.gcnews.com.au

Opinion divided

Should Queensland be opening new thermal coal mines? GC&M News letters are divided, with LNP supporters' letters defending coal. Ironically, managers of business and investment in Australia are going the other way. Australian banks, pension and superannuation fund managers and insurance companies are now managing for climate risk. AGL, a major energy provider, clearly explains their decision to phase out coal completely by 2050: “It makes good business sense to plan for climate change … we have found that while there are some risks in ruling out further investment in coal, there are bigger risks in sticking with it”. Exporting Queensland coal to India is a business decision that Australia should not subsidise. The claim that Australians should loan to the mine for the jobs is a furphy; there will be just as many jobs in alternative long-term job-creating ventures, including in manufacturing, tourism, horticulture and agriculture. India may well decide to go with alternative energy, and if they do, look out for the barrage of blame against rational people who see that coal is not our best option. The Queensland Government’s transition to renewables is right on track. Gillian Pechey Maleny

Re: Thermal coal and Great Barrier Reef

Gerry Muller (GC&M News May 3) asserts that the current thermal coal price is AU$86/tonne. The graph on the website he quotes shows the US$86 price but the Australian dollar conversion makes it AU$113/tonne which is the correct figure I gave. He could also study the history of the Great Barrier Reef. A senior James Cook University (JCU) marine biologist who researched the 2016 bleaching on Lizard Island inadvertently reported that, “This year the combination of El Niño, climate change and an extended period of hot summer days when the tide was exceptionally low has caused many of the corals that survived last year’s cyclone to lose their symbiotic algae and start bleaching.” Another JCU scientist made the important point that “There are literally hundreds of square kilometres of dead reef-flat which was killed due to the slow sea level fall of about a metre over the last 5,000 years”. Sea level began to rise slowly again after the little ice age around 1850 and new coral grew with it. The El Niño/La Niña climate cycle has existed for thousands of years and typically, intense El Niño episodes like the 2015/16 one cause widespread drought, warm seas, low tides and bleaching in the western Pacific. At the same time the eastern Pacific American coast receives heavy rain and snow, floods, high tides and after many drought years the 2015/16 El Niño has made California drought free again. The extreme 1876/77 El Niño caused a deadly famine in China which reportedly killed 13 million people. Recent scaremongering articles in newspapers and TV don’t mention the words El Niño at all, inferring that human CO2 warming is wholly accountable for the bleaching. Responsible universities should be reporting unbiased science instead of grant-seeking propaganda. Sel Hopley Maleny

Don’t miss the opportunity

As a more senior member of our community and a mother of grown up children and grand-children and former school teacher I often despair at the lives of our local youth. It seems that Beerwah continues to grow and expand, with many new housing estates, and the area’s retail/office buildings continuing to develop in our town centre. However what worries me is that we aren’t addressing the needs of the young people to keep them motivated and engaged in our community. To do this I believe we need to have a suitable indoor sports centre/stadium for them. While there is currently land for sale that adjoins the council land that houses the library and community centre and Turner Park, why doesn’t council purchase the land for recreational use for our teenagers? The vacant block in Turner Street, across from the Beerwah Post Office would be perfect for a sports centre that could be used for netball, basketball, indoor cricket, darts, pool, badminton, dance and indoor bowls. It would make sense to keep all of the facilities in the same area, and there is already parking, lighting and public toilets in place. I have raised this idea with the councillor, however I am just one voice and to achieve something like this I reckon it is going to take the voice of many for him to see that the community sees this as something important for our town’s future. A facility like this could be used by so many local youngsters and as the future leaders of our towns shouldn’t we want them to participate in local activities and help develop them as individuals who are resilient and healthy? I do love the work that council has done to beautify Beerwah, but it is time now to stop thinking about making things pretty and to get practical. If you agree with me, why don’t you let the councillor know?! Rhyllis Aitken Beerburrum Formerly of Beerwah

Misleading statement

If you live in Glass House Mountains and buy electricity from AGL you will recently have received a letter from the company informing you, inter alia, that “A technician will visit your home from 8am to 4pm between May 15 and May 26.” The visit will be for the replacement of your meter with a new kind of meter. Wondering how such a process could take eight hours I rang the company and found that what will actually happen is that a technician will work at my house for two hours somewhere between 8am and 4pm. Neil Lovett Glass House Mountains

Great idea

When I was in Maleny this morning I noticed that a community group had set up a clothes rack with winter jumpers and jackets in the laneway beside the Supa IGA. There was a sign encouraging people who needed the items to take one and for those that had suitable winter items to add them to the rack for those who needed them. This is such a great idea! Pharmacy diabetes screening trial For the past month the Mooloolah Valley Pharmacy has been participating in a diabetes trial program that screens people who have not been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. While there are limited places available in the trial they would like to encourage locals who are concerned that they may have an elevated risk of type 2 diabetes to consider volunteering for this free screening. The program is targeting those who have not being screened for diabetes in the past 12 months, who are not regularly seeing a doctor, and are aged between 35 and 74. Type two diabetes affects an

estimated 1.7 million Australian adults, and those who have it have an increased risk of serious health problems including heart attacks, kidney disease, strokes and amputation. However, the adverse consequences of diabetes can be avoided or reduced if diabetes is diagnosed early and treated. If you would like to know more about the program contact Carmen at the Mooloolah Valley Pharmacy on 5494 7777 or email mooloolahpharmacy@ nunet.com.au. The trial is being managed by the Pharmacy Guild of Australia in partnership with the University of Sydney and Deakin University with support from the Australian Government Department of Health.

with Billie Lerch Winter is coming and so are the colds and flus. I know, it does not feel like winter might be on its way with the warm, humid weather we are experiencing, however some colds and flus have already been around. Don’t wait until it hits you – get your immune system ready now! With 70% of your immune system housed in your gut, you can nourish your digestive tract and enhance your immune system by eating plenty of probiotic foods that are fermented, such as, yoghurt, kefir, kombucha drinks, fermented soy (tempeh and miso), as well as kimchi and sauerkraut. Vitamin C and zinc are excellent in strengthening your immune system. It is best to have them prescribed by a health practitioner, as many supplements in shops contain sugar and fillers, which can be harmful for your health. Relax, because high stress levels weaken your immune system. Listen to your body and take time off when needed. Reading, having a bath, walking and exercising can help to release tension and stress. Sleep is vital for your body and mind. Allow 7-8 hours for your body to rest and repair. Liquid herbal immune tonics are a naturopath’s best friend. Glass House Mountains’ Danielle Carrinton is a primary and special school teacher, and a mother to two children who both had different health challenges when they were young. She experienced how the foods people ate and the products they applied to their skin everyday would affect their bodies. She continually researches healthy living and shows others how easy it is to lead a healthy lifestyle. If you would like to know more, come along to the free session that Danielle is running at Beerwah Library on Saturday May 20 at 10.00 am. Living - Music

Music Today

with Dr Michael Whiticker

Winterbreak, June 8 - 12

With my background in composition and the recording studio, I have been involved with the Winterbreak Music Retreat for a few years as a mentor and ‘sound guy’ – running the PA system. Along with world-class tutors in voice, song writing and guitar, I get to spend four days with 35 like-minded souls, which in this case is people passionate about music. Last year’s tutors Jon Brooks (Canada) (song writing), Michael Fix (guitar) and Christine Collister (England) (voice) are outstanding artists and teachers, who participants from 2016 are still talking about. And I am sure this year’s - Shane Nicholson (song writing), Richard Gilewitz (USA) (guitar) and Sarah Collyer (voice), will provide the same level of inspiration to those taking part. So what could someone expect who hadn’t attended one of these events before? The website, www.looseacoustic.com.au, will provide most assistance in that regard, but here are some highlights: There are four nights of music making in which tutors share the “stage” with the other participants. This is a great opportunity for trying out fresh ideas and performing music with your new (and old) friends. Enjoy three days of workshops in two of the three offered areas: vocal, song writing and guitar. Everyone eats together and with only 35 people in attendance it means all get to ask questions and share ideas. And there is even a non music event – an early morning meditation for those who like to get a positive start to the day! For the really keen then, the day starts at 7am and ends at 11pm. Though not everyone has enough energy for that sort of day, it is offered and many actually take it on as there is such a positive and supportive energy at this retreat! The age range of participants at Winterbreak is roughly 18 to 70. The style of the music shared is wide, and with Shane Nicholson most known for his work in country music, Sarah Collyer in jazz, and Richard Gilewitz something of a Leo Kottke specialist on the 12 string guitar and also a master of the six string guitar and ukulele, this Winterbreak, as with all others, is sure to see no stylistic barriers! Everyone goes away from this retreat inspired and keen to set new goals for themselves and their music. And there can’t be a better introduction to it than that.

Michael has a recording studio in Peachester and runs the Glasshouse Musos open mic sessions. If you would like to find out more contact him on 0419 026 895 or E: mwhitick@bigpond.net.au

Local lads release EP

By Sonia Clark Beerwah High students Kody Thomas-Roby, Connor Flanagan and Mitchel Markham, along with Mitchel’s older brother Josh and friend Pace Procter, have just released their first EP ‘Catering to Madmen’ from their band Stand Alone. The band has been together for two years with lead singer/songwriter Kody describing their sound as “punchy, meaningful music influenced by rock and punk”. Kody, who along with his older brother Myles won last year’s Beerwah Talent Search, has written over 40 songs for the band, who only play original compositions. He cites his personal influences as the Sex Pistols, Green Day, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and The Whitlams and has been writing his own songs for a number of years. The band practise weekly and have already had a few successful gigs both locally and in Brisbane, with their biggest gig to date earlier this year at the Beerwah Hotel. The EP was released in April and features five original songs. “We named the EP ‘Catering to Madmen’ because most of the songs were based around the thoughts of people and everyone’s a little bit crazy sometimes!” said Kody. “It’s been an incredible experience releasing it – we are all absolutely over the moon!” The band is now focussing on plans to release an album in the near future and have a working title of ‘Unexpected Turnout’. Their current EP is available on a bunch of sites including Amazon, Apple Music, Google Play, iTunes, Pandora, Spotify, and YouTube – just search the sites for ‘Catering to Madmen’ by Stand Alone.

Elected

Representatives Andrew Wallace Federal Member for Fisher

Help me combat suicide and dementia in the Hinterland

Mental health is an issue that is very important to me. Tragically, every day in Australia five men and two women commit suicide, and more than $60 billion a year is lost to the economy because of poor mental health. In our community we also have an unfortunately high rate of dementia. Nearby in Birtinya there is a world class facility for clinical treatment and research into mental health and dementia – the Thompson Institute. It needs $7m to fund three vitally important treatment projects to improve life for people with dementia, reduce the suicide rate locally, and help young people with mental health problems. I am fighting in Canberra to secure Federal funding but I’m asking for your help. Please send me an email or a letter, at the contact details below, saying why you think the Government should support the Thompson Institute, and I will take your views straight to the Minister.

Training the doctors we need for our region

Last week I announced that the Federal Government has agreed to allocate 50 Commonwealth-funded medical school placements to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital. I worked hard to get this result over many months. There has been some confusion in the media about this, but I can confirm that all 50 places are now available to Griffith University to set up the school in 2019, and all 50 will be for Australian students, funded by the Government. This is a big win for our community. We all know that we have a shortage of trained doctors in our regions. By training doctors on the Sunshine Coast, we will have a much better chance of keeping them here to provide top quality health care in our Hinterland in the future as well as giving more opportunities to our local young people.

Opportunities for local small business

The Federal Government is investing more than $195 billion in getting the defence capabilities we need. I want to get some of that money for local small businesses in the Hinterland. Defence contracts are not all about ships, planes, guns and multi-national companies. Many sub-contractors who supply components of our military equipment, services and supplies are regional small businesses. If your business provides design, digital, engineering, manufacturing or professional services – even some agricultural products – you should get involved in finding out about defence procurement. I have organised for the Minister for Defence Industry, Christopher Pyne, to visit the Sunshine Coast and take part in a Defence Industry Forum. I have also invited major defence contractors and experienced small subcontractors to come along and speak. The forum will take place on Wednesday May 17. To register, please visit www.trybooking.com/PTYT.

Division 5 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council

2017 Small Business Awards – AKA The Glassys

Well the votes are in and no one could have anticipated the incredible response we have had this year to the Glass House Small Business Awards, nor the number of businesses and employees who have been nominated. It just goes to show how much our small businesses (and often Mum and Dad businesses) are appreciated by locals and how important that support is to their continued success. There are many businesses who are ‘return nominees’ from last year, but it is especially encouraging to see many new ones and the list just expanded every day the voting continued. The other exciting news is the number of employees who have been nominated. Retail can often be demanding and challenging and I’m sure everyone who has been nominated in this category appreciates their customers taking the time to acknowledge their efforts. All nominated businesses and employees are invited to a gala event at Flame Hill Vineyard on May 18. I will again have the assistance of a panel from Chamber of Commerce and Business Association representatives within the electorate to determine the award winners who will be announced on the night. Awards will be the same as last year for businesses and employees – the Bronze Glassy will be chosen by the panel as a peer recognition award, the Silver Glassy for the most votes received, and the coveted Gold Glassy selected from the nominated Bronze and Silver category winners. Winners will be chosen from each of the six main business districts – Caboolture, the D’Aguilar (Woodford and Wamuran) region, Glasshouse, Maleny, Montville and Palmwoods. The evening is all about promoting and encouraging the many local small businesses and employees we have in Glass House and giving them the opportunity to bask in the spotlight. It’s our way of saying “Thank you for everything you do!” I will be showcasing many of the nominees in the coming weeks on my website, so keep an eye out for photos from the event and from around the electorate. And most importantly, don’t forget to continue to support our local small businesses.

Congratulations must also go to the organisers of the Maleny Wood Expo for putting on such a wonderful event.

Construction of the Palmwoods Streetscape Project is in progress. Construction will take place from May through to December 2017 (weather and site conditions permitting). From Tuesday May 2 to Tuesday May 30 there will be some changes to traffic movement and Main Street will be temporarily converted to one-way traffic heading south from Margaret Street. This will facilitate the ongoing road widening and prepare for the construction of the new town square. I appreciate the patience of residents while this work is carried out. Full details about the construction works are available on council’s website.

Speed reviews on hinterland roads

Traffic count devices were installed on Burgum Road, Maleny on March 18. Council is awaiting data analysis to assist our investigations. Investigations are also being carried out into the speed limit along Western Avenue at Montville. Council officers will install traffic count devices on Montville Road to assist us in our investigations.

Have your say

The Draft Environment and Liveability Strategy will guide growth and shape the Sunshine Coast for future generations. The draft strategy focuses on ways to preserve the natural environment while enabling a good quality of life for all residents in an accessible and well-connected built environment. Have your say on the strategy by visiting council’s website.

Kids in Action

Maleny was one of the venues for more than 400 kids from 24 different schools across the Coast to visit as they joined forces to get their hands dirty, meet new friends and have fun as part of council’s Kids in Action program. Designed for students from Years 5-8, Kids in Action aims to increase children’s environmental knowledge and understanding, while providing opportunities for positive environmental and sustainability action. This is the sixth year council has been proud to host this exciting program and, as someone who has been a frequent attendee, I can confirm it gets bigger and better every year. The program adopts a kids-teaching-kids approach to encourage students to be informed and become confident and capable citizens able to combat challenges and actively protect their environment.

With real estate investment, it is important to think as your future tenant and the factors that are going to most appeal to them. While you may not be interested in living in a metropolitan location, many potential tenants are. And while you may not have the need to be close to public transport services, your future tenants might. Thus, in property management, always keep an open mind and carefully weigh up all factors that may be attractive or off-putting to tenants.

Contributed by Jenny Kelly Welcome to another wonderful month of orchid growing. The Glasshouse Orchid Society held its April meeting at the Glasshouse RSL Hall and the standard was as superb as ever. Judge's Choice was a beautiful Dendrobium Burana Stripe grown by Sue and Michael Keegan. Jan and Trevor Heitman grew the best Cattlya with their C. Caudebec ‘Southern Cross’x Rlc Roy Maidment ‘Southern Cross’. Jan and Trevor also grew the best foliage plant with their Tassel Fern, and best Species with Psh. cochleata. Jan and Trevor are dedicated growers and this is reflected in the quality of their plants. The winner of the Other Hybrid class was Theo Beenders with his Arthurara Sea Snake ‘Unforgettable’. On April 6 our members set up a great display at the Caloundra Orchid Society Orchid Show and our handsome efforts were rewarded with a second place in the overall display category. We managed to bring home quite a few firsts, seconds and thirds from the show, and we hope to do as well at the Gympie Show this month. With this nip in the air now, we will see different orchids coming into flower, especially the big, beautiful Cymbidiums – can't wait. Please feel free to come along to our next meeting at the Glasshouse RSL Hall on Thursday May 11 at 7.30pm. We look forward to seeing you there. Sue Keegan with her Den. Burana Stripe (dark) x Den. This week’s featured bushfood you may not be familiar with. Apium prostratum, or Sea Celery, is a delicious small groundcover herb that is native to coastal Australia and New Zealand. A favourite food of our indigenous communities throughout time, Sea Celery was an important vegetable for early explorers and colonists. Great if you have scurvy! Both leaf and stem can be eaten. The strong celery-scented leaves can be dried and added to spiced salt mixes or added raw and fresh to flavour soups and salads. This tasty herb teams beautifully with fish. Sea Celery leaf form and size can be variable but generally it has the appearance of shiny dark green parsley. It’s called Sea Celery as it is often found along exposed seafronts, growing in composted sea weed and sand. Small white flowers produce lots of seed and this hardy plant can spread from seeds and from the resilient tap root. A fantastic bush food plant for small gardens, containers and in mass plantings. Karen and her husband Spencer Shaw run Forest Heart Nursery in Maleny. Forest Heart concentrates on local native plants, bush foods, timber trees, native gardens, fruit trees, non-invasive exotics, tools and equipment, garden and ecology education, books, DVDs, art and so much more. Located at 20 Coral Street, Maleny - phone 5435 2193. Open Tuesday to Friday 9.00am till 5.00pm and Saturday 8.00am till 2.00pm.

Anzac Day for me this year was a very emotional occasion. Being confined to bed following major surgery, I was unable to accompany my grandchildren to the usual Dawn Service. But that did not stop me from viewing the live feeds on television of services and marches here in Queensland, interstate, at Anzac Cove, and in Belgium. Hours full of emotion honouring fallen and returned service personnel made it a proud but somber morning and afternoon. My wife's uncle fell while on service in Papua New Guinea, and is buried in the cemetery near Port Moresby. That cemetery was on the screen for several minutes on many occasions throughout the day's broadcasts, but we were unable to identify his headstone. What makes this poignant to me is that we were not the only ones affected by the day's

ceremonies, marches, and activities. So many Australians have someone in their background or family who has served their country in ways that require respect. So the sadness is understandable though it is mixed with pride. But eventually the sadness came crashing through my person in the form of tears and cries of hopelessness, loneliness and worthlessness. My family had left the house for an hour and I was alone. And it was the third day after my operation – and that is the low point post-operatively, the third day. Because of my medical background, I could understand it, but it was still so real. Now days later there is no sign of the horrors I experienced. And yet on Anzac Day we remember the individuals who did face the horrors that we have not really experienced unless we were involved in the horrors so endemic in military service. Those traumas most of us can only imagine. So today I recall the horrendous circumstances that my friend Jesus experienced when he faced the separation and death required for our salvation. Let's not forget Him. Let's remember that, whatever our situation, He is 'a present help' in Add septwe 12 2013.ai 1 10/02/2015 5:26:35 whatever GCNEWS life depths experience. Even onPMthe third postoperative day. I experienced that.

Sport Beerwah students go cross country Contributed by Debbie Ives Beerwah State School held their annual Interhouse Cross Country last week, with all students from Prep to Year 6 participating. The school's cross country track was set on the sports oval and surrounding bushland. The upper school ran 3km and 2km distances, with the Preps through to Year 3 running a modified shorter course. Each student received a participation ribbon, and all students who came in

the top three from the upper school were selected to participate in the Glasshouse District Trials. There was great team spirit shown on the day, with Bluegum house winning the overall trophy. It was also a day for individual students to excel, with numerous school records broken. A special thanks to PE teacher Mrs Traynor for the smooth running of the day, and the extra morning sessions in the weeks prior for students to prepare for the run.

A number of students set new records at the recent Interhouse Cross Country. Chloe, Lexie, Emilia, Jackson and Trae

Mooloolah – a small but mighty school Contributed by Michelle Lenz Mooloolah State School recently held their annual Cross Country with many great runners crossing the line for a place. Ten of those students had times good enough to go to the District Cross Country Carnival. These students were: Cooper Hackney, Tahlia Parry, Alyssa Hayman, Hollin Fish, Ella Ward, Zane Hawkins, Axel Stewart, Willem Poulus, Zac Stewart and Riley Hackney. With the assistance of wonderful parents and family members that could take them, these students went and represented themselves

and our school proudly with the help of our PE teacher Mrs Rachael Muller. All the students tried extremely hard and showed great sportsmanship to their team mates and other competitors. They had some great times and put their hearts and souls into their runs. They may not have been the fastest on the day, but their combined efforts let Mooloolah State School come out on top as Small Schools Champions on the day. So, well done to you all, Mooloolah State School is very proud of your amazing efforts.

Blackall Range Croquet Club Contributed by Kath Smith We recently welcomed thirteen people from the Range Care group for a home cooked morning tea followed by a game of croquet on our lawns. We know they enjoy the morning tea because their plates are always clean afterwards. We do enjoy having them. Wednesday saw our Lochwood team of Donna Manning, Nic Cram and Ken Barker play the third round of pennants at Caloundra, winning two of the three games. Scores were: Donna 26 (maximum available points) against 10 for 44

Delphine Willems; Ken made 17 to win from Mike Bertram; and Nic and Donna just lost the doubles against Eric Cree and Fred van Vugt, 18 hoops to 19. In home games on Thursday it was lovely to welcome our friend from Launceston club, Jan Barnes. Jan and her husband have spent the winter months in Maleny for several years now. She lost by one hoop against Ken, 9 hoops to 8. In the other game Ted Gardner played a clever game against Kath Smith for a 12 to 2 hoop win.

Witta Tennis

Contributed by Pauline Fraley Witta Wagtails had a home game against Maleny Magics. The games were hard fought but Witta Wagtails finished stronger on the day winning 45-32 games, 6-2 sets. A fun day was had by all. Thanks to Claire, Janet, Eunice and Sonia. Whistlers played at Witta against Mooloolaba Legends. Started with one tie breaker set, then all the games were rallies with lots of deuces. Most of the sets were very close, but we couldn't get the points to win the game. We were all exhausted by the end. Score was 30-43 games, 1-7 sets. Team was Liz Mellish, Brenda Warner, Aki Lepper and Maree Hooley. The Wildcats fought hard against Ballinger Smartinis but couldn’t bring home the win. The team was Pauline, Annie, Stacey and Jenie. The Wikings travelled to Yandina hoping to extend our winning streak. A great day of tennis with two sides equally matched throughout. It was touch and go all day and we went into the final sets needing results. Following a lot of grunting, running, air swings and rather nice tennis we won all three and the match. Thanks to Yandina for hosting and to our champions of the day No Knees John and Glenno, Ando, Mikey, Stace and Paulina. Looking forward to the return match at Witta in September. Social tennis: Monday 8am and Saturday 1pm, all welcome. Court bookings: 0437 295 501 or www.wittatennis.com.au.

Letting loose

8

An old man finally gets the sports car of his dreams and decides to go for a drive and see what his new car can do. He's letting loose on the highway, when police lights and sirens turn on right behind him. He looks at his speed and notices he's doing 100, so he presses on the gas increasing it to 110, presses a little harder increasing his speed to 120. Finally he decides "I'm too old for this" and pulls over. When the cop reaches his window he says, "Look old man, I've got 30 minutes left in my shift and

1

it's Friday. If you give me a good excuse I've never heard before, I'll give you a warning.” The old man thinks for a sec, and replies, "Three years ago my wife left me for a police officer. I thought you were bringing her back,” to which the cop replied, "Have a good day, sir!" I told my friend that she drew her eyebrows on too high. She looked surprised. A beauty tip

Your Stars with Edgar J. Winter - www.astroclairvoyant.com ARIES March 21 - April 20 What you need this week is something to bolster up your sense of self-worth. Your personal pot is boiling as the mid week’s Full Moon in Scorpio zips across your financial axis! This puts stress and stubbornness on recent monetary dealings. However, as Mercury now moves direct, do not make any impulsive changes until June. TAURUS April 21 - May 21 This week’s Full Moon is in your opposite sign, namely Scorpio. As this will fall across your partnership sector it might bring in a secret relationship. That is often the case with a Scorpio action but be aware that this may only be a revelation from a dream and in practical reality you should avoid any reckless moves. Mid-June success. GEMINI May 22 - June 21 As you are probably aware by now, Mercury is your ruling planet. You should be feeling some joy and relief as this planet has moved out of backward step and, moving direct, will join up with Jupiter mid-June to relieve you of any old problems. You are building up to unexpected breakthroughs re personal development. CANCER June 22 - July 22 If you have your own personal business, the planets Mercury and Jupiter are lining up over the next couple of months to relate to good financial returns. From mid-week the Scorpio Full Moon takes many to look more deeply into love and creativity. Anything working on superficial levels will not stand up to a substantial test of time.

O-Ring Denture

Mini dental implants are becoming increasingly popular in dental care today - because of their smaller size they are often used in cases of limited bone anatomy. They can also make removable dentures more comfortable, and easier to wear. The positive outcomes of choosing mini dental implants include being minimally invasive and affordable. If you are unsure if they would work for you or if you would like to find out more information, please contact David and the team at Dental Excel today.
