Hi Everyone... This week our front cover has been created to blend the historic past with the present at Bankfoot House, Glass House Mountains in honour of the house celebrating its 150th birthday this Sunday. Originally the property was a Cobb & Co stop and family home, however these days it is owned by Council and is being preserved for its important heritage value. The long and interesting history of the building has been shared with locals and visitors of all ages for many years by the Friends of Bankfoot House, who are a dedicated bunch of volunteers. This weekend’s celebration has been put together in partnership between Council’s Heritage staff and the Friends of Bankfoot House and the program of activities is awesome with something for everyone! We will no doubt be arriving in time to get a photo of the Governor of Queensland, His Excellency the Honourable Paul de Jersey AC, doing the official opening. However, I have a sneaky suspicion that Brownie is really keen to see the whip-cracking demonstrations and the arrival of the veteran cars. Check out what is planned for the day on Page 5.

LifeFlight Razor Challenge was postponed The dangerous road conditions which have in the past sparked a need for the RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter to respond to accidents in the Hinterland, have forced a fundraising event in support of the charity aeromedical service to be postponed. Organizers were deeply disappointed that the Brisbane City Jaguar Land Rover LifeFlight Razor Challenge cycling event was not able to be staged in Montville last Saturday October 6, due to the bad weather conditions forecast for the weekend. LifeFlight Foundation Fundraising Co-ordinator Mandy Hentschel said that they’d had such strong support from the residents and businesses of Montville and the surrounding area. “This event will definitely go ahead at a future date, but unfortunately it wasn’t able to be held last weekend, as the safety of our riders is our number one priority," she said. The event is a brutal test of endurance, known as ‘Everesting’, where competitors have 24 hours to repeatedly ride one steep five-kilometre section of Hunchy–Razorback Road until they've conquered 8848 metres - the altitude of Mt Everest. LifeFlight Senior Paramedic and local resident Brad Solomon said that unfortunately, even the slightest wet weather would have a huge impact on the ability to descend Razorback safely. “This is compounded further by the fact we would be descending this segment 23 times or more whilst dealing with hazards such as darkness, fatigue and fellow road users. It would have been

too risky to take on Razorback last weekend," Brad said. Brad reckons the silver lining in the forecasted rain clouds is that donors who are considering supporting their team riders will have some extra time to get involved and help raise money for the RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter service before the event is rescheduled. A new date for the event will be announced in the coming weeks. The Brisbane City Jaguar Land Rover Razorback Challenge cyclists are each aiming to raise $5,000 in support of RACQ LifeFlight. Bankfoot House commemorative book Bankfoot House in the ‘Glass Mountains’ was established on October 16, 1868, by William and Mary Grigor as a passenger lunch stop and horse changing station ready for the arrival of the first coach from Brisbane to Gympie on November 12, 1868. In 2018, both Bankfoot House and the original Gympie Road will celebrate 150 years – their sesquicentenary. To mark this occasion, Ron Gillinder and the Friends of Bankfoot House have researched and compiled a commemorative book to be launched on Sunday, October 14. The book describes the debate and some of the reasoning that led to the construction of the first Gympie Road, as well as the servicing of the Cobb & Co coaches when travelling for two full days from Brisbane to reach their destination of Gympie. The origins of the heritage property, Bankfoot House in the Glass House Mountains, are much better known than the origins of the first road connecting Brisbane and Gympie. Back in the 1860s, there were demands on the new Queensland government to construct trafficable roads, ie, roads that could take horse-drawn four wheeled vehicles. Squatters carried great political influence and needed access to port facilities for their produce and wool. Debates were raging on the relative priorities and merits of constructing a road leading north from Brisbane to Maryborough and indeed which town might become the colony’s capital.
OCTOBER IS FOOT HEALTH MONTH
Ron Gillinder with the new book
However, money for road building was scarce and European investors were unwilling to take risks without guaranteed returns on their investments. The discovery of gold near Gympie Creek by James Nash in October 1867 quickly brought all arguments to a head. News of Nash’s discovery spread like wildfire throughout the colonies and prospectors headed for Gympie Creek not really knowing where it was or how to get there. Demands on the government for a road north increased immediately. Cobb & Co’s road manager, Hiram Barnes, had been dispatched to Toowoomba two years earlier to examine the market and investigate mail contracts. Cobb & Co was prepared to establish a coach service to Gympie as soon as a suitable road route had been planned. Road building had its difficulties. Road workers took much longer than planned to cut the road through the bush – partly because whenever word came through of a good gold find, the road workers took off, with the government-owned pick and shovel on their shoulders, to try their luck. Following completion of the Gympie Road, the first coach run could start as soon as horse-changing stages were in place. Copies of the book will be available for $20 (cash purchase only) at the celebrations.

Celebration at Bankfoot House Everyone is invited to Bankfoot House, Glasshouse Mountains, this Sunday, October 14 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of this heritagelisted property between 10am – 3pm. The highlights for the day include the launch of the ‘Welcome to Country’ with Kabi Kabi and Jinibara Elders and celebrations by Queensland Governor, His Excellency the Honourable Paul de Jersey, from 10am. There will be plenty of free entertainment for everyone during the day including tours of the old House, whip-cracking demonstrations, oldfashioned children’s games, baby animals and Cobb & Co stage coach display. Live music is by Uncle Bob’s Jug Band, with heritage film screenings, Gubbi Gubbi Dancers and art activities. A number of enthusiastic members of the Queensland Veteran Car Club will drive their pre-1919 vehicles from Rocky Creek campsite near Landsborough along Old Gympie Road to Bankfoot House. As many members of the families who lived in the House were timbergetters, a special part of the day will be a life-size replica of a bullock, pulling a log lent by Peachester Sawmill. The Sawmill is also lending the original mill saw used in the late 1800s. There will also be displays by the Peachester History Committee, Landsborough Museum, Woodford Museum and Yandina History Society. Food will be available for purchase (cash only). The Beerwah Lions Club will have a barbeque, the Peachester and CWA ladies will be selling cakes and sandwiches, and there will be a coffee van on-site, with tea and damper available across the road at the Australian Teamsters Hall of Fame. There will be a free shuttle bus picking up from the Glass House Mountains Train Station between 9.30am – 3.30pm. Bankfoot House is located at 1998 Old Gympie Road, Glass House Mountains.

Vale Shane Old By Lea Parkes A service was held recently at the Gregson and Weight Chapel at Caloundra to celebrate the life and acknowledge the sad passing of Glass House Mountains local and GC&M News team member Shane Old. Funerals are never easy, and in this case in particular Shane was only 52 years of age. It is devastating that his life had been cut short as a result of a two vehicle accident, with no warning, no signs ahead for him or those that loved him. Before entering the Chapel, taking a look at the large groups of people attending, many who were strangers, it was heart-warming to see the various shades and types of yellow, in response to the family’s request for those attending to wear Shane’s favourite colour. Whether it was the bright yellow dress shirts, casual polo shirts, a ribbon on a jacket, a bow around a ponytail, or a bright patterned scarf, the gesture managed to unite a room full of people who may not have ever met each other but had one thing in common – that Shane had touched their lives. At funerals there are always plenty of interesting stories shared, funny moments and special insights into another person that you may not have had any idea about. There were some consistent themes in the stories shared on the day, and it was clear that Shane’s family knew just how much he loved and cared for them all. He was a giver, a sharer, someone who was interested in other people. He listened to them, and whenever possible helped them out.
Many locals would recognise Shane as one of the Glass House Mountains posties for many years, and had been delivering our newspaper for the past ten years. This big burly fella was a genuine softie with a big heart, which comes through in the story shared by Vanda (aka Wanda) Grabowski the President / Secretary of Koala Action Inc who cared for injured / rescued Koalas on her local property. A few years ago Vanda had arranged for Shane to come to her property to do some tree mulching work for her, and over time he went on to became a great help and support, assisting with her koala food plantation. Vanda explained at times she would have to force him to take a payment for his services, his usual parting comment was its all for the koalas and if he could help that was a bonus. From the koalas, and the rest of us humans, thanks Shane for your big heart and the care and concern you have shown so many in our part of the world.

BEERWAH
Rolling to represent Queensland By Sonia Clark In exciting news for members of Coastal Junior Roller Derby Inc, six of their eight (Level 3) team members represented Queensland at the Australian National Championships last weekend. The team that practises weekly at the Beerwah Community Hall, is coached by local lady Kylie York and includes two Beerwah High students, her son Deegan York (aka Tenacious Deej) and Jenna Hetaraka (aka Savage). Coach Kylie said that it was super exciting that small league players were representing the state at a national level. “It’s pretty special for us all that our players have been able to take their game further by achieving a place on the Queensland team,” she said. “While 16-year-old Jenna has been competing in Roller Derby for around four-and-a-half years here
and in New Zealand, 15-year-old Deegan only joined the local team in April this year.” Deegan comes from a family of committed Roller Derby fanatics (his mum, dad and three brothers all play). He has only been competing for a year. “They may have had a chance to have their full team selected for the Nationals, however, the other two team members had plans to be overseas during the Championships so didn’t compete in the recent tryouts,” Kylie said. The National Roller Derby Championships were held at Morayfield Sports and Entertainment Centre. The Queensland team played in a nail biting game securing second place in the competition. South Australia led for the entire game, and Queensland scored 5 points in the last 10 seconds of the game taking the win, 181-178. Final rankings NSW/ACT first, QLD second, SA third.

Update with Ursula Starkovsky Chamber President
Young driver safety program
Hanson’s team of professional truck drivers for the past six years have voluntarily spent a day at high schools in Queensland and NSW to provide road safety training to Year 10 and 11 students. The interactive program was developed by Hanson to educate young drivers in rural and regional areas about driving safely alongside heavy vehicles and trucks on our roads. Hanson’s transport and driver trainer managers visit the schools with local police officers to tackle myths about trucks and highlight safety issues of overtaking, blind spots and visibility, braking distances and tailgating. Since 2012 the program has won state, national and international awards and more than 500 student drivers have taken part so far. Hanson’s Glasshouse Quarry manager, Chris Wilson, said the program is close to the team’s hearts and the company is keen to visit high schools in the Hinterland to share road safety messages. “Our drivers love taking part and we are all proud to be working together to ensure young driver safety on our roads,” Chris said. “We’d really like to make contact with more schools now to establish a daytime visit, bring the trucks along for a practical lesson and share what we know about road safety with students learning to drive,” he said. Hanson’s community relations team is now seeking more local high schools to join the free road safety program this year and can be contacted by phoning 3246 5500 to find out more information.
Happy days are upon us (the Chamber I mean). We have a super functioning Executive and people who are eager and willing to put in the effort to provide valuable information to our business community. Our Chamber members can profit from the knowledge and knowhow of professionals who are willing to share. Belonging to an organisation like the Chamber of Commerce means that you volunteer your time for the betterment of local businesses, without getting any financial benefits. In these hectic times, this is truly remarkable, and I cannot thank my colleagues enough. At last month’s session, Brett Piercy from Hinterland Accounting and Tax explained how to read a financial statement, e.g. the Profit and Loss Statement and the Balance Sheet. It highlighted the cost structures of any business and discussed which costs can be reduced and which costs are fixed. I believe that every business owner should check financials with a neutral eye, checking exactly where and when costs can be reduced, or when it is prudent to increase the cost base to accommodate a new product or service. It is a fact that most businesses fail within the first five years. So, financial savviness is the key to success in any business. The next session will deal with employment and our Executive Member Jane Mannion will be presenting. The meeting will be held at the Beerwah Golf Club on Tuesday October 16, starting at 6.30pm. Check the ad on page 17 to register.

Day for Daniel fundraiser at Dental Excel
Dental Excel has thrown their support behind The Daniel Morcombe Foundation by establishing a fundraiser with a goal of raising $2,500 by the end of this month. On Friday October 26, team members from Dental Excel will be holding their own ‘Day for Daniel’, and in the lead up to the event, raffle tickets will be sold with some incredible prizes up for grabs. While the cause is particularly close to the hearts of team members at the Palmwoods practice, the local practice at Beerwah has a swag of great raffle prizes generously donated by local businesses, that can be viewed in the lead up to the draw at the end of the month. Raffle tickets can be purchased from any Dental Excel practice. First prize is a $1000 holiday voucher to anywhere of your choosing! There is also a teeth-whitening pack worth $750 and numerous gift hampers and other prizes. Dental Excel has also launched a ‘mycause’ campaign, and donations for this most worthy of causes can be made via https://www.mycause.com.au/page/186289/day-for-daniel-with-dental-excel. In memory of Daniel, the not-for-profit foundation's key role in the community is the education of all children about their personal safety. By directly assisting educators and parents through the funding and development of child safety educational resources as well as assisting young victims of crime, the Foundation continues to empower all Australians to make their local communities safer places for all children. Following their recent win at the Fine Food Australia Expo in Melbourne last month, Hum Honey, based at Peachester, also won several medals at the Sydney Royal Fine Food Show and was awarded the highly prized Regional Food Champion in the other product category for its Cold Fusion organic lemon myrtle honey. Hum Honey has been in operation for five years and we have been members of FAN since its inception. Q. You recently won best new product in the Australian-made category at the 2018 Fine Food Australia Expo. What was involved in entering and how did you feel about that win? A. All exhibitors with new products within the last 12 months could enter and we were competing against 400 other products. It was such an honour to be a finalist let alone the winner! It is a testament to our dedication to producing a quality product and our love of working with quality Australian producers. Our focus has always been on infusing with quality
organic ingredients that are ideally locally sourced. Q. How does it feel to have just been awarded four medals at the 2018 Sydney Royal Fine Food Show for products from your range as well as Regional Food Champion in the other product category? A. What an amazing few weeks it has been for us! Tony and I are very proud of our results – from eight entries for Hum Honey Cold Fusion we won four medals (one gold, two silver and one bronze) plus the Regional Food Champion other product category for Hum Honey Cold Fusion organic lemon myrtle. We are absolutely delighted that our products are being recognised at such a high level right across Australia, and ever so proud to fly the flag for regional food for the Sunshine Coast. Q. What do you love about being a local producer? A. I love creating products with integrity that I can share with my family and friends, connecting with my local producers and sharing our passion for our farm produce with our treasured customers. All the long hours and often very physical work of beekeeping is forgotten in those moments when people discover Hum Honey and savour the flavour of our unique range. Q. What are your thoughts on our local foodie scene here in the hinterland – what makes our products special? A. We have a pristine environment on the
CROWNS $990
Sunshine Coast which supports an amazing array of innovative farmers and producers. We have the superb support of food industry advocates. We also have a growing industry community coming together to collaborate and elevate producers across the region with FAN. Importantly our foodie scene would not raise the awareness without our advocates and food trailblazers such as Petra Hughes from Local Harvest and the Sunshine Coast Regional Food Directory, who fly our flag and keep the broader foodie fans connected with our farms and farmers. Q. What are your future plans or new markets you’d like to explore for Hum Honey? A. We are currently undertaking significant growth plans of our apiaries to service the domestic market as a primary focus.

Drought Appeal Donation
0400 668 503
In mid-September the students and staff of Glass House Mountains State School got behind the ‘Fiver for a Farmer’ campaign, coming to school dressed as farmers and donating to support our farmers in need. Student donations were matched dollar for dollar by the P&C Association. As a result, a massive $2,000 in total was donated to the Jandowae Lions Club Drought Appeal. Staff member Alison Edwards had the pleasure of presenting the cheque to Lions Club President Norma Curd in Jandowae recently. The Lions Club was surprised and extremely appreciative of the donation and wanted to thank

Three great poets of rock and roll in song for Maleny
Baritone crooner Mikelangelo takes on Nick Cave, Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen in a triumphant one-man tour de force at the Maleny Community Centre on Sunday October 21 at 2pm. The concert is Maleny Arts Council’s final concert in its 2018 series, that has seen an innovative Winter Theatre Festival, and an outstanding performance by Lyall Brooks as ‘A Prudent Man’. President Peter Lavery said he hesitated Mikelangelo to say they left the best till last, “… but there are some people who will say so. I have friends who are trad folk followers of Leonard Cohen, gothic rock enthusiasts who can’t go past Nick Cave and blues/jazz aficionados who can’t get enough of Tom Waits, and in this show they are all represented. “Mikelangelo brings a collection of brilliant numbers from all three poets/ songwriters, weaving them together with his personal stories and a smoothas-velvet voice. He is also a really nice guy to talk to, so we are looking forward to having our audience up on The Deck after the show to have a chat, with a drink and a sandwich,” he said. The show Maleny will see on October 21 moves across genres and decades from the serious to the joyful and includes universal favourites like Cave’s Into My Arms, Cohen’s Hallelujah and Wait’s foot-stomping Goin’ Out West. He will also treat the audience to some of his original songs, showing he can hold his own as a songwriter, even in this exalted company. You can, of course, meet him after his show on October 21 when he comes up to The Deck of the Maleny Community Centre. This is an Arts Council tradition where the audience gets to enjoy a wine from the bar and free nibbles from the Arts Council committee. Bookings are open at the MAC website www.malenyartscouncil.com or from the Maleny Visitors’ Centre. Prices are $30, $25 for members, and $15 for students. For a group of ten you can get your tickets at member price, and for this please ring the treasurer John Marsden on 5494 2584.
Garage sale at St George’s Church
By Judith Ross-Smith Those who attended the successful first-time fete at St George’s Church grounds recently, despite a rainy start, will know there was a large container in the grounds hiding masses of exciting household goods and furniture. There is a lot left and that will be for sale again on Saturday October 20. Priest-in-charge, Jeanette Jamieson explains that the advertised auction was actually a bit late. “We found that by the time the auction came on a lot of people had to go home and were disappointed, so we are giving Maleny an opportunity to pick up some great bargains at a monster garage sale. “We were really pleased so many people attended our fete as we want to be part of the community we serve. We want people to know where we are and to share our beautiful grounds. “Our church is ideal for music and we are hoping to establish a music program called ‘St George’s-in-the-Fields’, stealing an idea from the famous St Martin-in-the-Fields in London,” she said. For the fete, St George’s invited a clarinet choir from Brisbane for a concert that was well-attended and successful, with local music by Kim Kirkman, along with the Maleny High School band conducted by Liz Druitt. This was very popular with fete attendees. The ‘garage’ sale will include not only large items like furniture but also ‘trash and treasure’, books, clothes, plants and the wonderful cakes that the St George’s ladies are famous for. The sale will take place in the grounds of St George’s Church on the corner of Tallowwood Road and Walker Drive at 7am (not before) until noon, on Saturday October 20. Tallowwood Road leads off Bunya Street opposite Maleny High School. St George's Priest-in-charge Jeanette Jamieson with Jim Atkinson, about to reveal the secrets of the container

Are you interested in ensuring the survival of koalas in our region? Then come along to the Koala Action Inc. (KAI) AGM at the Caboolture Regional Environmental and Education Centre (CREEC) at 150 Rowley Road, Burpengary on Saturday, October 20 at 10am. Learn what KAI has done to date to ensure the sustainability of the koala population in South East Queensland. Our guest speaker will be Amy Robbins from Endeavour Veterinary Ecology who will provide research results in relation to the Chlamydia project sponsored by KAI in 2017. Amy investigated the short and long-term clinical outcomes for 167 koalas with Chlamydia who underwent capture, telemetric monitoring and intensive veterinary management as part of a large-
scale population management program in South East Queensland. Amy is also keen to garner support for her new project investigating whether habitat quality is a key factor in determining Chlamydial disease progression in koalas. Visual display boards will show the perils koalas face and what can be done to reduce those perils as well as provide general information about koalas. Those with many years of koala-related experience will be available to answer questions after the meeting. Morning tea will be provided. Membership forms will be available to those who wish to contribute to KAI’s efforts.
Act now if your tank is running low Residents not connected to the town water supply are being advised to take steps now to ensure they have adequate supplies for the upcoming warmer months. With an exceptionally dry winter continuing into spring, apart from some much-needed rain in some parts of the region in the past week, the council has started to field inquiries from residents concerned about the low levels of their water tanks. It’s a repeat of the situation just over 12 months ago when many Sunshine Coast residents not connected to town water experienced supply issues after reacting too late to their critical water situation. This led to lengthy delays for tank refills with commercial water carriers struggling to meet demand. Local Disaster Management Group chair Mayor Mark Jamieson said with forecasts of a drier than normal summer ahead, residents who relied on their own
tanks for their water needs should be taking steps now to guarantee they wouldn’t run into problems later in the year or into 2019. “It isn’t a wise idea to just think ‘I’m okay, the rain will come,’ if your tank is already at a low level,” Mayor Jamieson said. “To avoid any potential problem, now is the time to contact the water carriers and ensure you’re okay for water and not putting yourself, or your family, in a difficult situation. “Last year, water prices spiked due to demand brought on by too many people leaving it too late to attend to their tanks.” Any person experiencing extreme hardship due to lack of water supply should make their situation known to friends, family, neighbours, relatives or assistance agencies for support.

To be independent, we sometimes need support As we age, most people prefer to stay living in their own home. Not only do we prefer the comfort and familiarity of our own home, we also enjoy having our own routines, as well as being surrounded by our own social networks – friends and family, familiar shops and our own activities and hobbies – that help us stay engaged and connected to the broader community. But as we age, we notice that some of the things we used to be able to do – like cleaning our gutters or maintaining our yard - start to become more difficult. RangeCare’s CEO, Jenny McCafferty, has seen this all too often. Jenny said that often the first things that people find that they need support with is transport to and from medical appointments, as well as household cleaning, gardening and home maintenance.

Glasshouse Country & Maleny News
Along the range, RangeCare actively supports more than 446 clients with transport, a further 466 clients with household cleaning, and another 466 with gardening and home maintenance. Often people are unsure about how to access these types of services and can find navigating the aged care system difficult. “There are three options available to people,” said Jenny. “The first option is that people can apply for government subsidies to help cover the cost of in-home support services.” Jenny said that the first port of call for anyone wanting to apply for government subsidies is to contact My Aged Care. “The second option is for people who want to completely avoid the government application and assessment process; they can simply contact a provider and pay full fee for the services they use – no government assessments required,” said Jenny. Jenny said that the third option is a combination of both; people access government subsidies for some services, and then pay the full fee to ‘top up’ their existing services where government funding falls short, or to access additional services not covered by government subsidies. Women tune in to singing group A new season of singing begins again with Dolce Diva (a singing group for women who love to sing) on Monday October 15 and all women are invited to come along and join in the delightful fun. Community Music Educator, Emma Creed said there is something very special that happens when a group of women come together and sing. Emma is the director of Dolce Diva – and believes that everyone can sing.
“I guess all I do is create a space where we can come together, reconnect with our breath and our body, find a little bit of stillness and sing from that space. “It’s gentle, it’s beautiful, it’s not so serious, it’s joyful. The group sing lots of songs from around the world and from different eras and love sharing their singing with local nursing homes a few times a year,” Emma said. Longtime member Cheryl said singing with Dolce Diva is the best way to start her week. “It is a bonus to make some lovely new friends,” she said. Dolce Diva meets on Monday mornings at the Landsborough School of Arts Memorial Hall during school terms and would love more women to come and sing with them. All women are welcome and there is absolutely no singing experience required. To find out more, call Emma today on 0438 619 518

Chamber of Commerce can help your business grow At the heart of every business, are its people. Therefore, recruiting and strategically retaining quality staff is fundamental in every business, both small and large. So how do we, as small business owners recruit the right people for our business and more importantly, how do we keep them? As a part of the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce’s commitment to assisting small businesses in this region, they will be holding a ‘Recruiting for Success’ seminar as part of their ‘Tools for Business’ series. Jane Mannion, who has recently moved from Hobart to the Sunshine Coast, will share her recruitment knowledge and experiences with local business owners and managers. Jane has over 25-years' experience in marketing, customer service and leadership management within large, fast-paced organisations. Jane has seen first hand over the years' how costly recruitment can be and says it’s important for managers to not only recruit the right people for the job, but also retain their staff. “Research suggests that people don’t leave jobs, they leave managers, therefore it is imperative that as managers, we know how to firstly recruit the right people and secondly, effectively engage our staff so they don’t move on,” said Jane. “In addition to this, business owners also need to plan ahead and be prepared for the recruitment process when the time arises.”
She will also identify strategies for dealing with the recruitment of varying generations including millennials. Jane says that managers will walk away from this seminar with practical tools to implement in order to recruit, engage and maintain staff. Call Jane on 0417 398 386 to reserve your spot.

Melbourne Cup Get ready for the big day
Whether you regularly tote a chapeau or only pull one out for the Melbourne Cup each year, there is a unique opportunity coming up for those who want to stand out from the crowd by having an expert guide them to make their own fascinator. LilyM Headpieces and LilyM Millinery Supplies director Brenda Treasure has just returned from the Millinery Meet-up in Gatlinburg, Tennessee where she has been inspired by the latest trends and techniques used by international milliners. Hinterland community members can tap into that energy when they attend the hat making workshops on Tuesday October 23 and Saturday November 3. “I enjoy having other milliners or novice milliners bounce ideas off me so that we can collaborate to see how a creative idea can work,” Ms Treasure says. “All people need is the confidence to have a go... anyone can do it. You never know, you might create something beautiful and it will definitely be unique.” The family-owned business has teamed up with the Beerwah Kindy and will donate a fee from every workshop registration to the community kindergarten to assist with buying new equipment for the children. LilyM creations will also feature in the fashion parade at the Beerwah Kindy’s Melbourne Cup event at the Beerwah Hotel on Tuesday November 6 from 10.30am. Models will be dressed in the latest Icon Boutique fashion and those who joined Ms Treasure in the hat workshop will also have the perfect opportunity to show off their bespoke creations. Beerwah Kindy fundraising coordinator Sally Joyce says this year’s Melbourne Cup fundraiser will be bigger and better than ever, with a special kid’s menu available at the Bistro so the little ones can join in the fun, while adults will get a two-course lunch and a complimentary glass of wine on entry. There will be surprises at every turn, with raffles, lucky door prizes, prizes for best dressed, a photo booth equipped with a professional photographer to capture you and your friends and a fashion parade, all for $45. Melbourne Cup Luncheon tickets are available at the Beerwah Kindy in Free Street, Beerwah, or direct from the Beerwah Hotel. To book your spot in the LilyM hat making workshops, contact 0427 096 913.

There will be prizes for ‘Best Dressed Lady’, ‘Best Dressed Gentleman’ and ‘Best Millinery’ with people's choice winners. A highly anticipated inaugural appearance of the ‘Hunks of Maleny’ is also on the cards and the luncheon meal is sure to tickle even the most discerning of taste buds. Following a complimentary glass of champagne on arrival, guests can enjoy canapes of Meredith goats’ cheese and slow-roasted tomato wontons with sweet balsamic Ryan and apple. Volcanic eruption in Beerwah Contributed by Colleen Crase The last week of school at Glasshouse Christian College was full of excitement. A volcano ‘erupted’ right outside the library and the year 7 and 8 students had to come up with a plan to survive this event. The emergency event simulation project was planned for months to give the STEM and FUSE students the opportunity to explore their areas of interest as they navigate through the consequences of a surprise volcanic event. Principal Mike Curtis gave a formal briefing for the students and then took questions from the students. Most of the questions related to food, shelter and personal hygiene as students tried to think through the consequences of the simulated emergency. After the briefing, students got to work managing the emergency event. Engineering teams fashioned all-terrain vehicles, the crisis team managed the emergency services aspect by erecting shelters and auditing the supplies available on campus. Other groups tended the wounded and those who needed SES assistance. Media students interviewed witnesses and put together newsreels of the event. The breaking news team was kept very busy with updates of ash
Students speak to SES representative about courses of action clouds, acidic water supplies and the impending peril to surrounding residents, and science teams ensured others were appraised of the changes in conditions Students found one aspect of the erupting volcano more horrifying than any other and that was when there was a lockdown due to ‘toxic gas’, which meant they weren’t able to access their morning tea from their lockers until after the break. Although they were temporarily placated with emergency rations of chocolate, some still staged a protest. The volcano was impressively complete with rising steam simulated by dry ice and drew a crowd of onlookers throughout the day. Students engaged with the problem-based learning experience with enthusiasm and a great sense of fun.

Vacation Care Fun There were many highlights during the holidays with some of the simpler activities proving as popular as the ‘big ticket’ outings. Local community member Sarah Harding provided donations to support a ‘gardening experience’ activity where the schoolies were shown how to use the tools required to master gardening. Re-potting existing blooms into large pots was one of the useful skills they learnt. A ‘pancake art’ day held on the first Friday was a huge hit with lots of creative flair shown as the kids used coloured pancake mix to make edible designs – of course eating the yummy pancakes afterwards was also fun! An excursion to the Aura Peddle Park was a great opportunity for the kids to enjoy movement expression using bikes, scooters and skateboards.
The popularity of the Glasshouse Early Education Centre’s Vacation Care program continues to grow after another awesome school holiday program wrapped up last week. School-aged kids (aka ‘schoolies’) had a fun-filled two weeks, featuring a heap of boredom-busting activities, local adventures, cool and creative craft and some super special excursions. Team member Ange Hardey said the kids had an absolute blast, and the exciting mix of excursions, activities and creative play meant that there was always something fun and interesting to enjoy.

This recently designed facility has paths designed with street lights, tracks, and hills and is located in the Aura Estate in Caloundra. Creative activities such as making fairy light jars and doing tie-dye also proved extremely popular. A spare pile of white pillowcases kept at the centre meant that no one missed out on any of the tie-dye activities and both these activities were ones suggested by the kids themselves. An excursion to Aussie World was also heaps of fun with the theme park characters on hand to engage the children, as well as rides and plenty of other activities too.

You Said It Ask the doctor
During the past few days, I have been saddened to hear about two friends living on the Sunshine Coast who have multiple cancers. They now face serious health challenges, surgery and ongoing treatment. I am looking forward to Dr John Clark’s upcoming presentation, ‘Cancer - Is there Hope?’ to the community at Landsborough, on Sunday November 4. Dr Clark completed his training at Loma Linda University School of Medicine in California and now lectures in Queensland on a wide variety of lifestylerelated diseases and conditions. He is passionate about improving the lives of others. Nutrient-dense foods that help fight cancer and other chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and obesity will feature in the vegetarian cooking demonstrations and taste-testing lunch that follows. If you would like to find out more about the presentation email health@landsborough.org or phone 5494 7228. Joanne Oaklands Mooloolah Valley
Speed monitors
At the Caloundra turn-off where all the roadworks are being done, they have signs with a face (smiling or a frown) to check and monitor people’s speed to help motorists. They don’t collect revenue and shouldn’t. Why are they not using these in towns on the Sunshine Coast? They must be a lot cheaper to produce than all those red-light cameras. That must be exactly the point, they don’t collect revenue. I think it’s an aggressive way to save lives when there are other ways without killing people’s holidays or weekends with fines. I’m sure that the softly, softly approach with people would save more lives. Fines make people angry and upset, especially with the price of petrol, rego and everything else, insurance, etc for the roads and works that all our cars pay for. I say do away with the cameras and have more face signs everywhere displaying speeds, a more ‘save lives’ approach. Happy drivers are a safer option than someone who has just been fined and holidays and weekends should be happy, not a time to collect revenue. I say save lives with happy drivers. Christine Beerwah
Re: Protection of worker’s rights
In response to Philippa Howell’s letter (GC&M News, September 26) I am an ex-high school teacher, mother of four and grandmother of six, and unions do not belong in our schools. I have no problem with the history of unions being taught in Australian history. Lord knows, the curriculum is crowded enough now. Just because union membership has fallen away, they should not look to students to bolster their numbers protesting, and handing out pamphlets etc.
CONDITIONS Please keep your letters under 300 words, your name, address and daytime phone number must be supplied. Letters must focus on issues and not be personal attacks on individuals. Letters may be edited.
Unions can educate workers in the workplace, not our children in our schools! Joyce Newton OAM Balmoral Ridge
Re: Protection of worker’s rights
In response to Philippa Howells letter (GC&M News, September 26) that “schools need to include the union movement as an important part of our history.” I would be very surprised if the early development of unions and their strong influence on our present-day workplaces is not comprehensively covered in the curriculums of today’s schools. Nevertheless, the extent of current information on award wages and employers’ obligations to be found on Google is truly amazing. In addition, today’s students are far more computer literate than previous generations and would have much greater ability to search out answers to questions and solutions to problems. Young people starting out on their working lives could readily access huge amounts of information regarding their rights, entitlements and pay awards in a few minutes’ search of the Queensland Government’s websites. Topics such as pay guides on minimum wages, employment standards, rights for specific groups, i.e. people with disabilities and young people, are easy to find. But if they are concerned about any conditions of their employment, they can contact the Fair Work Ombudsman by the given phone number. There is no shortage of information regarding workplace standards and safety. School-age children who are known to be such “savvy” users of today’s technology are more aware of their rights than their parents and grandparents were. Olive Hockings Maleny
Threatened Eco Systems
This is the second time we’ve been lectured by Richard Giles (GC&M News September 26 and October 3) for our collective inactivity regarding the use of pesticides (and other things like EMR etc.) that are ruining our health and our future as a species. To his credit this week he has offered a solution. Tell your garden supplier that you’re not going to buy glyphosate! Cancer gets a huge mention with claims it is increasing. Only yesterday it was announced that an Australian team of medical scientists have predicted the end of cervical cancer. It’s well understood in reputable medical literature that we are winning the war on cancer and no dubious claims can challenge that. People are living longer. Unfortunately, the only study quoted by Richard is one widely discredited in scientific circles. Modern man’s biggest health problems come from lifestyle and the rest are from coping with wars and famine. Richard won’t vaccinate anyone and derides GMO’s. Now we have a fake news epidemic, courtesy of the internet that muddies the water so science

and scientific facts get twisted and challenged by whoever has another view. The point of me writing here is balance. Scare-mongering does nothing to help us cope with a world population that is approaching 8 billion (estimated). When my father was born (1904) the population on earth was 1.4 billion. There are many cities on this earth that have populations in excess of Australia’s total population. We have to deal with that reality. What’s Richards answer to the problem? Tell your garden supplier that you are not going to buy glyphosate! Well, perhaps that’s thinking globally and acting locally, but it looks more like the privileged among us, who are living in paradise, telling the rest of the world to get their act together. I’ll buy the science. Peter Gawith Peachester
Plastic bags
Whilst I agree with James Aitken that some retailers could lift their game by supplying wrapping or paper bags for clothing items, I have found that a very minor change in habits, ie carrying a couple of rolled up cloth bags in my bag when shopping, works well. There are also quite a few compact reusable washable bags available for sale. However, whilst it’s great that governments have now banned single-use plastic bags, I also believe that legislation hasn’t gone nearly far enough in banning plastic packaging, much of which is totally unnecessary except to support packaging industry profits, or force us to buy more than we need of a product. For example, if I need only half a dozen nails or hooks of a particular size from a hardware store, I can only buy 100 of them in a maximum strength plastic package, which ends in landfill. Considering that 335 million metric tonnes of plastic were estimated to have been produced worldwide in 2016 alone, (and a total of 8.3 billion tonnes since mass production of plastic started in the 1950s,) and we now know the devastating effects the 8 million tonnes a year which end up in our oceans are having on marine and bird life, our governments need to resist the packaging industry’s lobbying and ban all unnecessary plastic packaging. We individual citizens need to avoid buying these products where possible, that is if we want some kind of future, including a healthy environment, for our children and grandchildren. Elected Representatives Andrew Wallace
Federal Member for Fisher Prime Minister in Glasshouse Mountains
Last week Prime Minister Scott Morrison came to the Sunshine Coast Hinterland to see the resilience and innovation being displayed by our local strawberry growers. The Prime Minister visited Ashbern Farms with me, going to their fields in Glasshouse Mountains and their packing facility in Beerwah. While he was here in our electorate of Fisher, the Prime Minister announced a package of $350,000 to communicate with and train people throughout the fruit supply chain and to make sure that the action that fruit producers are taking to keep their food is safe is appreciated. This will help the industry to recover as quickly as possible. At Ashbern Farms we saw the metal detectors that the growers Brendan Hoyle and Jon Carmichael have put in to ensure that they can catch any contaminated produce. It is exactly this kind of innovation that the Government’s new funding will help to support. I have visited local strawberry growers both large and small here on the Sunshine Coast this last fortnight and it has been heart-breaking to see how tough the impact of this criminal sabotage has been for many of them. Our Federal Government has acted quickly and decisively by passing legislation to increase the maximum penalties for anyone engaging in these cowardly acts to 15 years in prison. We have also allocated $1 million to put more food safety officials on the ground, to increase detection and fast track recalls when they are requested by State and Territory Governments.
Sunshine Coast Veterans Day
This Thursday 11 October is my Sunshine Coast Veterans’ Day at Australia Zoo. If you are a current or former ADF member, you and your partner will get free entry all day to the Zoo on the production of any proof of service. Our service men and women put their lives on the line to keep Australians safe. We all owe them a tremendous debt of gratitude, and I am determined to do what I can as your Federal Member of Parliament to give something back. Thank you to the Zoo for coming on board and demonstrating how committed they are to our local community. I hope to meet many of you there on the day.

State Member for Glass House My plan for a Blackall Range regional art gallery
I believe the Sunshine Coast is the visual arts capital of Queensland and one of the major art destinations in Australia. We already boast an incredible collection of more than 40 private and public art galleries and open studios that draw art lovers from all over. While those galleries and artists are increasingly unifying around a local art trail, I believe the Sunshine Coast is lacking a jewel in the crown: a true regional visual arts gallery. Regions like the Tweed Valley in northern New South Wales have seen the benefit of building their own regional art gallery, which is nestled in an attractive environmental setting. Having visited and seen their success, I believe that the Blackall Range on the Sunshine Coast could take regional art galleries to another level and smash it out of the park. Imagine a major visual art gallery that celebrates Sunshine Coast artists and that interacts with one of Australia’s most iconic natural attractions - the Glass House Mountains. Imagine a major visual art gallery that not only services a growing region of more than 300,000 but delivers on a vision for Queensland’s cultural future. I stand ready to work with all levels of government — federal, state and local — and with the private and philanthropic sectors to make this vision a reality.
Mooloolah State School colour run
My staff and I were recently invited to the Mooloolah State School end of term colour run, and it was a truly fantastic event. The school is continuing its positive behaviour program that includes fun Friday activities each week – a great initiative if you ask me! Based on a student’s behaviour choices they get to pick their own fun Friday afternoon activities. At the end of each term the generous P&C offers students an activity that is funded by the P&C through its fundraising profits and is a whole school rewards day. Manning the colour station meant that we were tasked with throwing coloured powder (corn-starch) over the students while they ran around an obstacle course – the perfect therapy for worn out parents at the end of the term. A wonderful time was had by all and I would like to congratulate the Mooloolah State School P&C on pulling off this event without a hitch. Andrew at the

Division 5 - Sunshine Coast Mooloolah community update
The pathway along King Road in Mooloolah is currently being upgraded to 2 metres wide. This is one of many projects funded through council’s $370 million Capital Works Program this financial year. I’m very pleased with these important works to replace the pathway along King Road to be undertaken, as the result will be a better and safer pathway for everyone. Thank you for your patience while the works are in progress. The landscape specification has also been prepared for the renewal of a spring rocker at Martin Rungert Park, Mooloolah Valley. Construction works are planned 2019/20 with the scope of the works to include the removal of the existing spring rocker that is nearing the end of its serviceable life and the installation of a replacement spring rocker.
Securing more green space than ever before
A record nine properties, covering 405 hectares of the Sunshine Coast, have been secured for future generations as part of council’s Environment Levy Land Acquisition Program, which protects and enhances environmentally important land. Located across the Maroochy, Mooloolah and Mary River catchments, the newly acquired properties increase the council’s environmental reserve network to more than 6900 hectares. The nine additions represent the highest number of properties secured over a 12-month period since the introduction of the land acquisition program. This year we have invested more than $13.75 million from the Environment Levy into projects that protect, maintain and enhance our environment. With these acquisitions, the council will now have acquired more than 3400 hectares of land using the Environment Levy.
Act now if your tank is running low
Sunshine Coast residents not connected to the town water supply are being advised to take steps now to ensure they have adequate supplies for the upcoming warmer months. With an exceptionally dry winter continuing into spring, apart from some much-needed rain in some parts of the region in the past week, the council has started to field inquiries from residents concerned about the low levels of their water tanks. With forecasts of a drier than normal summer ahead, residents who rely on their own tanks for their water needs should be taking steps now to guarantee they wouldn’t run into problems later in the year or into 2019.
Community grants available
Does your community group need help funding a project, event or activity? The latest round of council’s minor community grants program is now open and will close Monday November 5. Funding is available for projects that benefit Sunshine Coast communities. Head to the council’s website to submit an online application www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/grants. The environment levy, which is funded by all ratepayers, raised $13.7 million last financial year to help Sunshine Coast Council protect our natural environment. Buying ecologically important parcels of land forms a major part of this approach, with Mayor Mark Jamieson announcing the latest nine purchases covering 404 hectares. “Our natural environment is one of our region’s most valued assets,” Mr Jamieson said. “The land acquisition program is one of those projects and has enabled council to acquire nine properties worth $7 million across the region. “With these acquisitions, council will now have acquired more than 3,400 hectares of land using the environment levy,” he said. “The Sunshine Coast will see a range of challenges – from population growth, economic growth and climate change – over the coming years, so we’re being proactive and highly strategic in our approach. “We want the Sunshine Coast to be Australia’s most sustainable region – healthy, smart and creative, and with the successful implementation of the environment and liveability strategy, I’m sure it will be.” Of the nine properties announced, three are within our local region. At Cambroon, two parcels of land totalling 172 hectares have been purchased adjoining the existing Tuan Environmental Reserve, to link the Mary River with the extensive Maleny National Park complex. The purchase will help protect threatened and endangered species like the Mary River turtle, Mary River cod, brush-tailed phascogale and glossy-black cockatoo. To the east of the Big Kart Track at Landsborough, council has purchased a large land parcel to almost double the size of the existing Brannocks Ecological Reserve to 80 hectares. Adjoining the Mooloolah River National Park, Brannocks Reserve is habitat for the threatened wallum froglet as well as containing eucalypt forests suitable for koala habitat that are not well represented in other council reserves.
Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network Tiny creatures with a big name
Hiding within our local waterways are complex communities of tiny creatures called macroinvertebrates, which include insect larvae, mites, shrimps and crayfish, snails, mussels, limpets, segmented worms, roundworms and flatworms. Some of these, including snails and mayfly larvae, graze on the algae on rocks. Shredders/filterers, such as freshwater shrimps and mussels, catch tiny particles floating in the water. Detritus feeders, that eat organic material within the mud or sand of the stream bed, include aquatic worms, yabbies and amphipods. Dragonfly larvae, beetles and water mites feed on other macroinvertebrates. Different macroinvertebrate species have different tolerances to nutrients, sediment and other pollutants in the water. A healthy waterway will have a wide selection of species present, with no one type dominating the system, and will include sensitive species, such as mayfly, stonefly and caddisfly larvae. A polluted waterway will have only a few species present, often in large numbers, and pollution-tolerant species, such as aquatic worms, leeches, midge and blackfly larvae, will dominate. Currently, Coochin Creek has large numbers of leeches and bloodworms living among thick layers of algae, indicative of high levels of nutrients in the water. Macroinvertebrates have an important influence on the nutrient cycles, decomposition and movement of materials, and are an important source of food for fish, frogs, birds and platypus. It is important to protect our streams by planting vegetation along the riparian zone (stream edges) and ensuring the water is not polluted by excess nutrients, sediment or other contaminants. Health &Beauty Creating a space for people to heal
What you need to know about managing Type 2 Diabetes
Big plans are under way at Soulqi Acupuncture and Massage as the Beerwah business has a total revamp of its premises. Soulqi business owner Kaz Thomas-Roby said she is excited to be creating a special space that is more than just a treatment room. “We want people to come in and leave their problems at the door. While we already offer great massage and acupuncture services, our current focus is to create a more beautiful tranquil space where we can facilitate people’s healing. Sometimes all people need is a space to allow their bodies to heal,” Kaz said. Gorgeous new wooden doors have been installed to provide an even more inviting entry, and the reception area and treatment rooms are getting an overhaul. New air-conditioning, remodelled treatment room walls that go all the way to the ceiling, and a repainted and refurbished interior are also under way. As well as refurbishment plans, the business is expanding with additional staff and longer opening hours. Plans are being finalised for a new acupuncturist trained in Chinese herbal medicine to join the team in November, and a new remedial massage therapist will also join the business in the coming months.
A diagnosis of type 2 diabetes can sometimes be overwhelming to begin with. However, a free information session delivered by Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service (SCHHS) could make all the difference. Health lifestyle officer Kerry Roach said it was important that people who were newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes established a selfmanagement plan to reduce any risks of future complications. “This is usually done with your GP, and because the condition is largely managed at home and through establishing daily, healthy lifestyle routines it’s also important to better understand your diabetes and how to access further local support,” she said. “We deliver free information sessions for people newly diagnosed with the condition, providing information on self-management care plans, healthy lifestyle guidelines and where to look for further support in the local community. “A diabetes educator, dietitian, social worker and health promotion officer present four unique sessions on the day and provide plenty of time to answer all your questions. “The information session is also beneficial for people who have been diagnosed for some time and may just to need to update their knowledge or top up their motivation towards staying on track.” The next information session is scheduled for Wednesday, October 24, 9am to 1pm at the Maroochydore RSL Sub-branch. To be eligible to attend this workshop, you must be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes or prediabetes (confirmed by your GP), be over 18 years of age, be able to attend group education for four hours and be able to learn in the company of others. Carers and/or family members are also welcome to attend. If you meet the eligibility criteria above, please don’t delay, register your interest today by calling Central Intake on 5479 9670. While a referral from your G.P. is not necessary, bookings are essential.

From the churches Over the past few months, the members of our Church have been considering the incredible growth that is occurring in our local area. We are particularly aware of the high number of homes in Aura, but also the recent announcement of the Beerwah East Development. The number of people that the government are predicting will live in our local communities is staggering. One can easily become concerned about the lack of infrastructure and employment opportunities that may arise. But we can also be hopeful too that new people will bring new initiatives and opportunities to our communities. Something that the church talks about all the time is how we can help promote community. A common theme for us is that the Church is like a family – somewhere where you know you belong, a place where you are loved and appreciated, a home where you can return when life is great and when life gets you down. While not everyone has a positive experience of family, we all have a longing for a place, and a few people, where we can be truly ourselves and

Julie Worrell Glasshouse Country Anglican Church where we can let our hair down. One of the challenges for society with changes, such as we are seeing around the Hinterland, is that with the speed of growth of communities we may not know our neighbours. We may not know who is new and who needs encouragement or a kind thought. Often we keep quiet in our relationships and people are not aware of our own needs for care and love. In the middle of all of this, our Church would like to know what we can do to help you? What do you need as you see the communities around you change? Or perhaps if you are new to the hinterland, what services would you like the Church to provide for you? Maybe there is something you have been wanting to tell someone but haven’t known who to tell. If that’s the case, try telling us! As we seek to learn more about our community and be of ‘use’ to those around us, I would love to hear your thoughts. So be brave and tell me, contact rector@cgca.com.au or PO Box 52 Caloundra 4551.

Home & Backyard
Save yourself money by installing shutters & blinds There’s a weak link in your home that’s making you feel hotter in summer and colder in winter than need be, and no, it’s not your overworked air conditioner. It’s your windows. Your windows can make all the difference to your household’s year-round climate; they’re estimated to be responsible for up to 30% of heat loss in winter and 40% of heat retention in summer. In other words, give your windows a little bit of attention and you could be saving yourself both the hassle of continually needing to crank the heating or airconditioning, and a significant amount of money. Shutters and blinds are by far the most superior choice for helping you save money through less energy expenditure. In the heat of summer, they can be adjusted to lessen the amount of solar radiation pouring in through your windows, making a significant impact on cooling down your house. During the colder months, they can act as insulation that stops warm air from escaping. It’s a win/win for
your household budget as well as a stylish addition to your living spaces. Factors that can have a huge impact on your energy efficiency include the gap between the covering and window, as well as simply choosing the right colour (dark attracts the sun, while light colours reflect the solar rays) or the right density of fabric blinds (the denser the fabric, the better the insulation properties). For this reason, having a professional handle installation is highly recommended, as they can make sure it’s tightly fitted and thus able to provide the best insulation possible. Your bank account doesn’t have to be a victim of the harsh Queensland sun; install quality blinds and/ or shutters in your home and discover the incredible difference they can make. Give your local Hinterland guy Greg from Factory Direct Shutters, Awnings & Blinds a call for a personalized quote and let him bring the mobile showroom to you. Business Feature

Save money by harnessing the power of the sun With power bills on the rise and Government solar rebate rates set to drop again at the end of the year, now is a great time to harness the power of the sun (especially here on the Sunshine Coast!) and explore your solar power energy options. Solar Source is your local solar power company owned by local electrician Dwayne Minchev who runs Instyle Electrics. Dwayne says that with an increase in the efficiency and cost-saving potential of solar panels, a growing number of homes and businesses around the Coast are looking towards the long-term cost benefits offered by sustainable options. With the long days of Summer just around the corner now is the perfect time to install. Using solar accredited installers, Solar Source offers friendly local advice, installation and ongoing solar panel maintenance. With eight years of solar installation experience behind the venture, Dwayne looks forward to offering
competitive pricing with high quality service for locals by locals. As well as solar panel installation, Solar Source will be able to advise on and install battery systems and provide updates on government incentives. Dwayne says that customers feel more confident knowing that their solar needs are being addressed by a company owned by qualified electricians. When looking into installing a solar system, EzyPay options are available, and Dwayne says that customers can pay back their investment in
convenient no interest monthly instalments. “It’s a great way for customers to purchase their Solar Power system and lock in the benefits now with the convenience of payments spread over time. What we see is customers paying off their solar panels monthly while enjoying substantial power bill savings at the same time – it’s a win-win situation!” said Dwayne. For more information contact Solar Source on 5494 0005 or visit www.solarsource.com.au, or call Dwayne on 0417 761 055, www.instyleelectrics.com.au

After you devour a lovely avocado, do you wonder if you can grow one from the leftover seed? Well, the answer is a resounding yes – and it’s
From $2.50 to $12 each

so easy, anyone can do it. You don’t have to grow an avocado as a fruit tree either. They make great novelty indoor foliage plants. And growing them from seed means that they are free. First, it’s best to use the seed straight away after eating the flesh. Don’t leave it lying around for too long. A novel way to sprout the seed is by poking three toothpicks into the seed so that it can perch half immersed in a glass of water. The bottom of the seed should be in the water, with the top end sticking upwards – this is the end with the growing point which will be a small knobbly lump. Before too long, the seed will sprout a root from the bottom and a shoot from the top. You will need to change the water every couple of days so that the root has access to new oxygenated water, otherwise it will stagnate and rot away. Keep it in a warm bright location and the roots will grow drown through the water in the glass. The roots will last about eight weeks before they start to deteriorate. You can them pot them into good potting mix as an indoor plant. You can also grow an avocado in potting mix – which is the best way to do it if you want to keep it for a longer period of time. Bury the seed in a pot of good potting soil with the top third exposed. Again, make sure the flat side is to the bottom and the pointy side is to the top. To stop indoor avocado plants from dropping their leaves, give them a position where they get plenty of good light. Fertilise and water them just like you would any other indoor plant and they’ll respond well. They won’t set fruit if grown inside, but realistically you’re growing it for the foliage anyway. Caring for your indoor avocado includes support and feeding. Stake and tie the main stem to keep it straight as it grows. Also, transplant the tree as it outgrows its pot. Fertilise with water-soluble food monthly and turn the tree frequently to promote even growth. Water when the soil feels dry to the touch, but remember that avocados can easily develop root rot problems, so don’t overwater them. If you want to eventually plant your avocado outside and grow it for the fruit, it’s best not to use a seed from a Hass avocado, unless you’ve got perfect drainage and rich deep soils. It’s best to use a seed from avocados suited to our soils and climate, like Walden, Wurtz, Rincon or Pinkerton.

ROSS’S RENTAL TIP SPRING IS A TIME THAT TENANTS LIKE TO MOVE 4
2
As we approach Spring I often see an increase in tenants moving. This can result in an increase of competition in the rental market if your property becomes vacant. It is particularly important at this time of the year to ensure that your investment property is presented in the best possible condition to attract high-quality tenants. Tenancy turnovers also present a great opportunity to renovate or improve the property while it is vacant.

The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker On Sunday September 30 nine players went down to Nambour to play in the Fitchen Trophy – an annual doubles tournament against Nambour Club. After only a few shots were played the heavens opened and play was abandoned after a very enjoyable morning tea. The tournament has been postponed to Sunday November 18. Ken played in the Windsor Cup on the weekend, winning four of five games to place first in Group 2. Lindsay David from Graceville Club won Group 1 and Wayne Appleby from Toombul Club won Group 3. Thanks to Windsor Croquet Club for a particularly enjoyable and well-run event. The Range Care group visited on Tuesday October 2 and had a great time. Playing conditions were
very good and this monthly event is a great chance for players from the club to come down and join them for a few rounds of golf croquet. The next opportunity will be on Tuesday November 13. Normally it’s the first Tuesday of the month but it defers to the Melbourne Cup in November. Nominations are still open for the club championships. The open and second division categories are well populated, but it would be good to have more in the third and fourth divisions. These games must be played soon. Nominate on the blackboard on the clubhouse door. Saturday mornings at 8am there are lessons for beginners on the courts in the showgrounds. For details contact president Vince Carbery on 5494 2193 or secretary Priscilla Vickers on 5494 3555.

Just for Laughs Mistakes can happen!
ARIES March 21 - April 20 A sudden money decision is needed. It may be a bit risky as it is designed to impress others. Make sure you get value for your money! If circumstances seem to block you from getting much accomplished, why not make a list of things you would like to get done in the near future. It is just that current plans may not pan out now. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 There seems to be a replay of the difficulties early in October, regarding work or travel. You are not at all comfortable with the carefree Sagittarian Moon this weekend. You are about to get a firm grip on plans and will innovate new ones and build upon them. There is a lot of unexpected energies under a Venus/Mars tension. GEMINI May 22 - June 23 Your ability to think on your feet will come in handy over the next couple of days and there may be some surprises too. This is because the Sun and Moon get together in opposition to Uranus, the planet of sudden changes. Look for colleagues to join in from the 15th with a charming Mercury/ Venus conjunction. A restful Sunday. CANCER June 24 - July 22 When Mercury and the Sun oppose the planet Uranus, between the 10th and 23rd, you may be torn between feelings for personal love and exciting social activities. A friend with odd tastes may drag you into a new experience. If you love poetry you come across the right book, expressing feelings deeply. Your muse awakens. LEO July 23 – August 22

You are torn between a work and home situation because those on either side want more of your time and attention. Even though this could be frustrating it may also bring an exciting breakthrough. Just stay calm and carry on! Words of love are intense and poetically provocative. Keep the morning agendas both loose and flexible. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 An outrageous idea or sudden decisions come at you with new technology items. Some news is startling or liberating, and attractions are strong. This week sees you with shrewd insights, common sense and support to find a way through. You might be up in the early hours going over plans and decisions. Good contracts are signed now. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 Mercury works well with the Sun sign this week, and its opposition to Uranus means an unsettling financial transaction could upset your security. Avoid rash moves this week, especially with competing viewpoints. There is a sweet conjunction between Mercury and Venus. This certainly steams up a passionate time in your life. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 You get a chance to repair anything that went wrong over the last month, and that includes your own motivations. Others are inspired by your integrity and grasp of how to make improvements. You have extraordinary Scorpio power with the help from Saturn, Mercury and Venus. Under Venus retrograde previous relationships appear. SAGITTARIUS November 23 –

December 22 There is a mysterious energy surrounding you which gives you strong convictions. This makes networking important, and you have to watch your words when teaching or presenting your business plans. The weekend will be your time to shine. Make up your mind to shift gears and set your own agenda. Confidential conversations revealed. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 Background moves that you make over the weekend gets you where you want to go, and to gain what you want to acquire. This beneficial trend takes you off to dinner, which brings together compatible colleagues. There is intense passion and power, which can be channelled into fulfilling desires. Words of love come in waves of poetry. AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 Though opposing forces could present you with an ethical dilemma, you can rely on meticulous, resourceful, efficient negotiations to see you through. This is the week to make wise choices regarding your career or anything else. Activities to join friends and groups together should prove lively, rewarding and enjoyable. PISCES February 20 - March 20 Tensions are building up, especially if you receive an outrageous, and perhaps exciting, offer or change. Therefore, if you take a sudden trip it may be to visit someone you have not seen for a long time. The planets say “yes” for your life to expand in great directions. There will be a lively atmosphere at home with good times shared.

Dental Excel.... Dr Raj Kengaiha Dr Raj Kengaiha was originally educated in India and completed his Dental Degree at the prestigious Bangalore University in 1997, followed by working busy dental practices in India before moving with his family to Australia in 2013. Although interested in all aspects of dentistry, Dr Kengaiha has particular passions for endodontic (root canal treatment) and orthodontic (braces).
He is doing additional training in Orthodontics, participating in a Mini Residency which formed part of his Excellence of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics (EODO) training. Raj has recently gained accreditation to provide Fastbraces orthodontic treatment – both simple and advanced.
Implants
Orthodontics
David and Finbarr have a great interest in the placing and restoring of dental implants and are constantly undergoing continuing education in the field. They have recently returned from the Dental XP world symposium on dental implants in Florida where 30 of the top implantologists in the world gave participants the benefit of their latest research and techniques which they could apply to the treatment of their patients. Implants can be used to restore function or cosmetics by filling gaps with implant crowns and bridges or to restrain those dentures which have a mind of their own.
Children in the developmental stages of their dentition are best served by being referred to a specialist orthodontist to guide them to a good result both functionally and aesthetically. However, there are many adult patients and older teenagers who are left with crooked or crowded front teeth who can benefit from the new technology of new orthodontic treatments such as FASTBRACES and INMAN ALIGNER. Raj and Finbarr, in suitable patients, are achieving excellent transformations. A consultation is free and will enable you to explore your options if you have concerns in this area.
Dentures
Bleaching
Dental Excel dentists still enjoy providing dentures, either partial or full, and aim to achieve both a good functional result but also dentures that provide as cosmetically pleasing a result for patients as possible. The dentist works in harmony with a very experienced technician so that between them they can achieve the best result. The correct extension and occlusal balance is of paramount importance for dentures to be wearable and the former is singularly missing in many dentures. Implants, where bone permits, can be life changing when used to stabilise and retain either partial or full dentures but must be viewed as a plus factor and not a substitute for well-constructed dentures. Fixed dentures are also now an alternative for many people.
Both home kit bleaching and in surgery ZOOM Tooth Whitening are available at Dental Excel.
Children Dental Excel welcomes our younger clients and also supports the Medicare Child Dental Benefit Scheme for eligible 2-17 year olds. A dedicated child play area for littlies has recently been added in our Beerwah clinic.
Cosmetic
Payment Plan
For those patients who wish to improve the cosmetics of their smile, all options such as composite veneers and porcelain veneers in association with general bleaching, are available as well as cosmetic crowns where required. SNAP ON SMILES is a really innovative new cosmetic product which for many people is a very easy way of achieving a great smile without major dental work and can both cover existing teeth and fill gaps present. This may be a great short or long-term solution for many people.
Here at Dental Excel we understand that there are so many expenses in modern life which tend to push taking care of that precious dental health well down the list, yet healthy and attractive teeth are a great asset to us all and regular care very often prevents big problems down the line. Therefore, we have recently introduced a ‘NO INTEREST EVER’ payment plan so that patients can have the treatment they need now and do not have to wait, and then pay for the treatment in instalments after (conditions apply). For dental implants / orthodontics / cosmetics we offer a free patient assessment.
