Hi Everyone
W
ell it isn’t every week that we have a gardening celebrity on the front page of the paper, but as Costa host of the ABCs Gardening Australia is visiting Maleny to be part of the Real Food Festival this weekend, we couldn’t go past making him our cover story. At the festival he will be presenting in the Sprouts (Kid’s Gardening section) which is great for the youngsters and no doubt really
inspiring. But I imagine there will be plenty of grown-ups also hovering about. I hope it is the case and that when we are there, it isn’t just me fighting my way through a bunch of small children, to get as close as possible to him (that could be a little embarrassing)! Fortunately when you go to an event for work, and you can say - yes just getting your photo for the local paper it gives you a level of credibility. This credibility might be blown if I ask for a photo of just the two of us so I can put it with my photo of me with Dr Chris Brown aka The Bondi Vet! Aaaah there has to be some perks of the job. Regards,

Huge program at Real Food Festival With stalls, demonstrations, discussions, hands-on and other activities throughout the weekend, the Festival has something for everyone and is a great way to support the best of Sunshine Coast regional food.
The Festival will feature more than 120 stalls showcasing good local foods and related products. There will be six separate venues to provide a real variety of food experience that will keep you entertained and informed. In the Kunara Real Food Kitchen one of the highlights will be the head-to-head cook off between local member for Glass House Andrew Powell and Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson on Saturday at 11.30am, facilitated by Free Ranging Chef, Peter Wolfe. The Food for Thought venue will offer perspectives on key issues for our region. It’s where you can hear experts speak about important food-related topics, such as the connections between diet and health, the sacredness of food and how peak oil will affect our local food economy. Food Craft will show kitchen tips and techniques, Nourishing Ideas will focus on diet and health, The Kitchen Garden will give practical advice on gardening, and the Little Sprouts area will inspire kids to develop a lifelong passion for good food.
The event will showcase an abundance of good foods from Sunshine Coast producers, manufacturers and restaurants. The Real Food Festival Co-ordinator, Julie Sheldon said it’s about authenticity and enjoying nourishing and delicious food that has been grown and prepared right here in our beautiful Sunshine Coast backyard.

Beerwah Real estate news
The Reserve Bank of Australia has this week announced the outcome of its eighth board meeting of the year. It is leaving the cash rate unchanged, at 2.5%. Great news for home and investment buyers as the cash rate has remained unchanged for 13 months. There are still daily changes in the finance market with increasingly intense competition amongst lenders. We can put you in touch with a local service provider (who has access to all lenders and loan rates for comparison) who will advise on how you can improve your current borrowing rates or a new loan.

Powell’s plan for local tourism Local tourism businesses and interest groups were given the floor recently to meet Beerwah and talk with with local State Member Andrew Powell and visiting Assistant Minister for Tourism, Gavin King, MP. A smallish crowd of 30 politely listened to the Assistant Minister, Andrew and Sunshine Coast Destination Ltd CEO Simon Ambrose, all speak about the positives they see about the Glasshouse Country region for tourism. Spirited questions and discussions followed from the floor, with many raising issues such as poor transport, poor signage, lack of recognition of the area from authorities, protection of our natural assets, and fair funding allocations to allow local tourism to prosper. Although no concrete commitments were given by those in authority in attendance, Andrew Powell acknowledged that the issues raised highlighted the need for an action plan for the region and funds to secure the success of such a plan. “It is clear that tourism operators would like to
Andrew Powell listens to a question posed by Steve Ralph from the Australian Teamsters Hall of Fame see a strategic plan in place for things such as roads, parks and signage that will encourage tourists to the hinterland,” he said. “I am committed to working with operators, all levels of Government, and the various Departments to establish a workable plan that will see Glass House and, in particular, the Hinterland, gain the respect it deserves as a tourist destination.”
New water meters
Residents in the Glass House Mountains will benefit throughout September as Unitywater identifies and replaces water meters nearing the end of their lifecycle. Residents will receive a notification card in their letterbox at least 48 hours before any works and, if they are home on the day of the work, Unitywater’s authorised contractor will make contact with them prior to replacing the meter.
The contractors will be in Unitywater-branded vehicles and carry ID cards. Following meter replacement, the contractor will leave a Works Completed card in the resident’s letterbox which records the water consumption measured by the old meter. Customers are advised to keep this reading for reference and to cross check when they receive their next Unitywater account.

Run tinged with sadness Next weekend, September 13 and 14, will mark the 25th year of the Glasshouse Trail Runs. Over the years it has evolved, expanding to now include three separate events and a range of different distances from 5 kilometres through to 100 miles. This year’s run has attracted 133 entrants which is the greatest number so far, and an increase from 110 entrants in 2013. This significant achievement is however tinged with sadness for event organiser Ian Greaves, as one of their most regular participants, Toowoomba Doctor Roger Guard, will not be at the starting line this weekend. Sadly Roger and his wife Jill were victims of the Malaysian Air Flight MH17 that was shot down over Ukraine in July. Ian said Roger first ran a Glasshouse Trail Run in 1996 in the 58km event and continued with that distance until 2000 when he decided to take on the 100 mile, finishing in 24:15:00. Since then he has started in the 100 mile another seven times and only once did he not complete the distance. He has completed more 100 mile runs at Glass House than all other entrant except former Glass House Mountains local Bill Thompson. His best time was 20:46:28 in 2006 but he has usually finished in under the 24 hour mark even when he was over 60-years-old. “After showing up the younger entrants, some used to make the comment that they had been ‘Rogered again’,” said Ian.
By Lea Parkes
“Roger just seemed to get better as he got older just like a fine wine, and a lot of his success could be put down to his crew led by his wife Jill. “At the Cook's Tour event held in May at Woodford this year Roger and his oldest son, Paul, entered the 50km race. “On completing his last race, it gave Roger 30 finishes in the Glasshouse Series Runs, the most completed by a male entrant and a total distance of just over 2,000 kilometres,” said Ian. “I arranged a commemorative cap for the 30 finishes and an embroidered polo shirt in recognition of the 2,000 kilometres he had achieved. “He asked that they be delivered to his son, Paul, as he and Jill would be away.” The shirt and cap were indeed delivered to Paul, but sadly Roger will now never get the opportunity to wear them. Since the passing of Roger and Jill, the Guard’s children have encouraged those that wanted

to honour their memory to make a donation to ‘Doctors without Borders’. In response to this, Ian has set up a special fundraising initiative for the event. He has made up a commemorative medal featuring a photo of Ian. These badges will be sold and the funds raised will be donated to the cause that was close to Roger and Jill’s hearts. You can make a donation in their memory by going to www.glasshousetrails.com.au and clicking on the link.

Is Spring really the selling season?
Business feature Yes! Well … that was easy. See you in next month’s column. Okay, I’ll elaborate. Spring is a wonderful time to put your house on the market and get a sale for many reasons. The most obvious one is that the weather warms up and people start venturing into the world again for all things, including real estate. Weekends become a time when people leave the comfort of their warm beds and want to explore all the ideas they’ve mulled over in the cold months. On the actual home front, the presentation of homes are always in better form when Spring hits as the sun comes out to green our grass, bloom our flowers and with all that nature provides home owners generally want to take advantage of this. Also, lots of southerners decide they’ve had their last blistering cold winter and migrate north in search of outdoor living and Queensland homes. So all of these things combined, as well as a few others, make selling your home in Spring a wonderful idea. While we’re on the subject of Spring and selling, to answer any questions you might have about real estate and help people in town bring in Spring, I will be hosting a free event in Woodgrove Park (Woodgrove Boulevard, Beerwah) on September 13 from 12.00noon to 2.00pm, with a sausage sizzle, jumping castle and free entry into a great raffle. Some great local businesses are involved and we’d love to see you there. Tamara can be contacted on 0435 849 580 or by email on tamara@laurieevans.com.au

Best job in the world
By Anne Snell
With Disability Week approaching this month, Glasshouse Country News spoke with carer Sonya Kosmac, who told us of her heartfelt journey to the job she now can’t imagine living without. I think it’s true to say that most people find their calling in life but sometimes your calling finds you and often times the road to that calling is rough. Sonya told me the story of her journey to “the best job in the world.” One afternoon she went around to her brother Benos house to borrow his lawnmower. He was due home from work at any time. She stopped and chatted with his girlfriend and gave their sixmonth-old baby girl a cuddle, then headed home. As she was driving home she heard sirens and had a funny feeling that she should follow them, but thought that was a bit silly, so continued on home. When she got home, the five o’clock news slammed her with the image of a familiar vehicle. The story told of a single car accident at Beerburrum resulting in one fatality and one critical injury. In that split second Sonya lost a brother. His friend, the driver of the car, had become a quadriplegic. That was 15 years ago, and since then, she has been a carer for disabled people in our area. She cares for three gentlemen, one of whom is her brother’s mate. There are so many more stories like this….. not all are the result of accidents, others have degenerative diseases, some are children but they all need care and support. Sonya is employed by an organisation called Quality Lifestyle Alliance. This is how they describe themselves: ‘QLA is a fully accredited not for profit organisation that has been providing support for people with a disability on the Sunshine Coast and surrounding areas for 21 years.
Sonya Kosmac describes her positon as “the best job in the world" Our aim is to provide the best possible lifestyle for clients to enable them to be as independent as possible. We pride ourselves on the service we provide, which supports client choice and selfmanagement.’ On Saturday, September 20 Landsborough Loggers Cricket Club are hosting a Super Spring Saturday fundraiser at the Landsborough Sports Complex on Tunnel Ridge Road. The day will run from 11.00am until 9.00pm and admission is free. Come along and enjoy a sausage sizzle, market stalls, crazy hair for kids, cricket challenge, happy hour and much more. Blues musician Barry Charles will be there from 6.00pm. Sonya was also particularly keen to tell me about the wheelchair challenge, an obstacle course you negotiate in a wheelchair with some of your body functions disabled - a dose of instant empathy. Local councillor Rick Barberowski has agreed to take up the challenge, so maybe you can too. As is often the case in the lovely Landsborough, local businesses have stepped up to help out. The bakery, the pub, Suncoast windows, Beerwah newsagent and Beerwah meats and Smileys jewellers have also all lent a hand. If you think you can help call 5443 9777 or visit www.qla.org.au
Want to get well and stay well? If so, you may want to consider chiropractic care. But what does chiropractic have to do with health and wellbeing? Isn’t chiropractic just good for bad necks and bad backs? Yes, scientific research shows chiropractic is very effective for neck and back pain … and it also has a more important impact on your body. Chiropractic is best explained through the following three scientific facts (number four ties the top three principles together). 1
A living human body is self-healing and self-regulating.
2 The nervous system is the master controller of the body and is responsible for these self-healing and regulating abilities. 3 The spine houses and protects the nervous system. 4 If the spine becomes subluxated, the nervous system can no longer function at 100%, leaving your body’s ability to self-regulate and self-heal at less than 100%.

As an example, consider what happens to your body when you run 400 metres. Without even thinking about it, you begin to breathe heavier, your heart rate increases, and you begin to sweat. Why does your body do this? It’s simple … to keep you alive! Your nervous system detected the need for more oxygen, more blood flow, and keeping you cool – so it coordinates the body to do those things in exactly the right amounts. Your body is constantly doing things like this, and so much more, every second of every day. Imagine the health consequences if your spine and nervous system were functioning at 100%. You’d feel and function great! So even if you have only minor aches and niggles, it’s a good idea to visit a chiropractor to get you well and keep you well, in more ways than you might imagine. Call us today on 5494 0499.

Construction of a new pedestrian and cycle link with scenic outdoor dining opportunities is underway in Maleny.

Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay said stage one of the Maleny Riverside Boardwalk project included installation of concrete footings, removal of pavers and laying of concrete behind the Riverside Shopping Centre. “These initial works have been undertaken with the utmost care and consideration for the surrounding environment, including the nearby Obi Obi Creek which is very important habitat for platypus,” she said. “Council has had fauna monitors on site to ensure this habitat was not disturbed or harmed as well as that of other native animals and flora.

“I’d like to thank the Riverside Body Corporate for their cooperation with council in supporting this project that will eventually provide a pedestrian and cycle link to the Maleny Community Precinct.” Stage one works also includes installation of footing micropiles. Once these are in place the installation of the three metres wide boardwalk timber decking and handrails will start. The boardwalk will be extended to four metres behind the restaurant to enable outdoor dining opportunities. Stage two works will extend east to provide a link with the nearby estate. These works will be subject to future land acquisitions.

Did you know that the crime statistics for all of Queensland are available on the Queensland Police Service website? You can find them at www.police.qld.gov.au/ forms/crimestatsdesktop.asp The following is a brief overview of incidents in the Beerwah, Landsborough and Glass House Mountains Divisions over the past two months. Since July 1, there have been nine unlawful entries, two of which are finalised while investigations are continuing into the remainder. This includes entry not just of houses but into businesses and vehicles whether the vehicle was locked or not. Many offences are a matter of an offender seizing an opportunity. Leaving your vehicle unlocked, even in a driveway or carport, only makes it easier for them. The same period has seen two robberies, one of a local service station, and one of a vehicle. The vehicle involved also accounts for one of the five unlawful use of motor vehicle incidents that have occurred. The five arsons during the period also relate to vehicles. Due to the large areas of forestry in the division it’s a common occurrence to be called to a burnt out vehicle in those areas. You can help, if you spend time in the forestry at the various
fishing spots or on 4WD and bike tracks and notice any suspicious vehicles, note down the registration details of the vehicle, the time of day and if possible where they were and pass the information on to police. While we can’t always immediately attend, the information may lead us to being able to locate a suspect, if it is later discovered that an offence has been committed. The previous two months has also seen 14 incidents of property damage. The category covers any kind of property from small personal items to buildings and street furniture. Offences can range from minor damage and graffiti to complete destruction of the property. A number of incidents of property damage can relate to other offences. Busy time at Guppy’s
At the beginning of last month, Guppy’s senior educator from pre kindy, Miss Kiera, began an environmental quest to build a vegetable patch with her children. With donations of vegetables, herbs, flowers, and equipment to the centre, Miss Kiera and the pre kindy children have built a wonderful veggie patch exploring Miss Kiera planting how to plant the seedlings as well as installing a climbing frame. The group will take regular photos to track the little plant’s growth each week and these will be added to their special project book which documents the progress. Parents have been invited to participate and contribute to this fun educational activity. In a bid to support the importance of connecting with the wider world as well as the local community, Carlos the African drummer from Mama Africa visited Guppy’s for a special interactive drum show on August 19. Families were encouraged to come along and embrace his beautiful culture; playing the drums, learning the language and singing his traditional songs. To mark Book Week this year a character dress up day was held at the centre. Both staff and children were keen participants in dressing up as their favourite book characters and reading various books covering fiction and nonfiction. Needless to say, there were a lot of feisty felines and super spidermen at the centre! To top off a super jam packed month, the meaning of Daffodil Day was explored at Guppy’s. The children were encouraged to participate through in-room activities that were meaningful, purposeful and built awareness linking to the true meaning of wearing a yellow daffodil to aid in the cause of cancer prevention. “We aim to build upon real life situations and knowledge, and equip children with the life skills to lead a rich and healthy life,” says Centre Director Mellissa Dimauita. These are just a snapshot of some of the activities that seek to positively promote growth and engagement for the children that attend Guppy’s as well as actively involving their families, the centre staff and the wider community. Guppy’s core vision is to provide exceptional childcare through a personalised service. Phone 5494 0777.
Ray White Beerwah are elated that their property consultant Andrew Dobbie has just won ‘Number 1 Agent on the Sunshine Coast based on Commission’ at a recent Ray White Gala award ceremony for the six month period from January to July this year. With an area covering Bribie Island up to Rainbow Beach, the win was a huge surprise but undoubtedly a testament to Andrew’s incredible work ethic and customer service. “With average prices in the area lower than coastal properties, it’s an amazing achievement and we are very proud of Andrew,” said Principal Paul O’Brien. “At the award night we had the CEO of Ray White Queensland come over and tell us how thrilled he was that a small regional office won - it really shows that hard work and dedication pays off,” he adds. Andrew has been with Ray White Beerwah since 2009 and has been a local for nearly 20 years. He loves real estate and delivers results with honesty and reliability whilst enjoying helping people get to the next stage of life.
McHappy Day is coming up fast and Ronald McDonald House Charities is calling on Glasshouse Mountains community groups to get behind the big day by forming a ‘Bucket Brigade’ on Saturday, October 18, to help raise more than $3 million for the charity. The event will take place at McDonald's Glass House Mountains and local groups including local businesses, dance groups, the fire brigade and ambulance services are encouraged to get involved by volunteering their time to help collect donations in fundraising buckets at their local restaurant on the day. This year’s fundraising target equates to over 23,000 nights’ accommodation in a Ronald McDonald House for families with seriously ill children. “The Bucket Brigades are a simple and easy way for people in the community to get involved and help families with seriously ill children. To form a ‘Bucket Brigade’ or get involved at your local McDonald’s please contact the McHappy Day Project Office on mchappyday@ppr.com.au.

Community News Junior Eisteddfod success My name is Ken Bannister and at the Chamber’s AGM last month I put my hand up for the job of Chamber President. I would like to thank well-known local Bob McLean who has led the Chamber of Commerce for the past few years. He has worked diligently to ensure the long-term future for our business community, making sure the views of Glasshouse Country were well represented in planning for the Sunshine Coast. I am looking forward to bringing my own style and approach to the position and want to encourage local business people to become involved in the Chamber, so that together we can create the type of future for our business community that we all benefit from. Last year the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce got behind the ‘Buy Local First’ campaign developed by Tara and Daniel from Total Microsystems in Beerwah. This really simple message, of check out what is available locally before leaving the area to shop, can make a huge difference to our local businesses and in turn our community. It’s something that we all need to keep in mind when spending money. As a way of encouraging and rewarding the many locals who are happy to lead by example, and already ‘Shop Local First’, the Chamber is running a promotion up until Christmas that will see some lucky locals win up to $2,500.00 of shopping vouchers. There are a number of local businesses (who are members of the Chamber of Commerce) that have already signed up to participate in the promotion. When you go into their businesses and spend $15.00 or over you will receive an entry to go into the monthly draw. Keep an eye out for the brightly coloured posters and entry boxes and make sure you don’t miss out!

Once again the month of August saw exciting competition at the Sunshine Coast Junior Eisteddfod. ‘Junior’ includes contestants who are 18 years of age or less. Andie Little of Beerburrum had an exciting two weeks of performances. In the wind section, she won a ‘highly commended’ certificate and also a bronze medal, in woodwind flute. To top off her competition, Andie won one gold and three silver medals in vocal work. She had the most points in the age set piece, sacred and gospel, and music theatre and was awarded the music teachers association of Queensland $100.00 bursary, for the second year in succession.

Local Juniors take on the world Contributed by Cat Murray The Sunshine Coast Area Rollers (SCAR) junior co-ed roller derby team, the monSCARs Super Villains, travelled to Carrara on the Gold Coast to go up against the Little Brisbane Roller Girls in a charity event for Paradise Kids on August 23. They returned home still undefeated, 190 to 176. SCAR now have a full junior co-ed team that include members from Beerwah, Landsborough, Maleny and Mooloolah Valley, and are well on the
way to building their second junior team. Last weekend four of our junior skaters joined Team Australia and VRDL's Mad Mel Arena at a two-day junior boot camp hosted by the Bundaberg Rink Rats. But the fun does not stop there, we have two skaters travelling to Adelaide to participate in the Junior Carnival hosted by the Lil' Adelaide Rollers, a three-day boot camp extravaganza of junior skaters from around Australia being coached by their peers and idols. And SCAR is excited to announce that six of their junior skaters are trying out for Team Australia, who will be participating in the upcoming first Junior Roller Derby World Cup, to be held in Seattle, USA. Australia now has 16 junior leagues and is still growing, so come see what the fuss is about and support your local co-ed roller derby league, SCAR. New Ownership at Subway Beerwah The Subway store at Beerwah has recently changed hands and is now under new ownership. The new franchisee is Brian Tonge, who has 14 years’ experience as a Subway franchisee and so certainly knows the ropes. Along with the Beerwah store, Brian also owns three other Subway outlets - two of which are on the coast situated at Glass House and Caloundra. With the change of ownership, customers can be assured that they will continue to see all familiar staff at the store. Brian has been impressed with the professionalism of the team, and is looking forward to working closely with them, as well as meeting more of the Beerwah locals. Brian would like customers to know that even though he won’t be in store all the time – he is a very ‘hands on’ owner and encourages all feedback about the store. “It’s great to have customer feedback - if it’s good it’s really great to let the staff know they are

doing a good job and if it’s bad then it shows us where we need to improve,” he says. He is also eager for Subway Beerwah to work closely with the local community and will continue to support the local schools and sports clubs. As Brian says, “we want to support the people who support us.” Living locally on the Sunshine Coast since 2001, Brian is married with three adult daughters, the
youngest of whom is in business with him, as a co-owner of a Subway franchise in Cairns. The menu offerings will stay the same, but Brian is currently in the process of revising the pricing structure, in a bid to make Subway even more affordable for local families, who will then be able to visit the store more often. So next time you’re in Beerwah - drop in and say hello.

Importance of inner beauty Last Thursday Ken Grant Store Manager at Mooloolah IGA, and some of his team, came to work dressed as fairies and pirates, to raise money and awareness for MontroseAccess, a Queensland charity providing support for children with disabilities. Ken (he’s the one in the red dress) said that it’s a charity they support every year. Through the generous support of Mooloolah locals this year they raised over $500.00 from the day, which
included a sausage sizzle and cake stall. “Being a fairy for the day is a bit of fun … I just wished it was a bit warmer,” Ken said.

TAFE students gain real world experience For the last five years, TAFE Queensland East Coast (formerly Sunshine Coast TAFE) has been actively engaged with the Mooloolah Community Centre through their Diploma of Community Service and Youth Work. Operating a community classroom from the centre during term time has benefitted both the centre, and the students, who gain real world experience. Coordinating teacher Pav Cosmatos, has seen by incorporating study units in a community classroom environment, that students learn to make better connections and gain deeper understanding of how community services work at a ground level. Students are encouraged to develop skills in networking, community engagement, advocacy and strategic alliances. Working from a collaborative basis, TAFE works closely with the Centre to see what would work and to seek ideas and feedback about what programs can be promoted. A plan is
By Sonia Clark then formulated for the term, and by tailoring a course of study based on the real needs of the Community Centre and wider local community, students are able to learn in an environment that resonates authentically with them. Community development projects include promoting the Mooloolah community garden for the benefit of the locals, engaging with the local primary school in various projects such as their ‘healthy eating campaign’, advocacy to allow local residents to install a light in the park for the safety of young people, and the resurrection of the community centre ‘Dug out’ youth program. By choosing programs that support the centre’s role as a community hub, Anita Verwayen from the Mooloolah Community Centre is enthusiastic about the student’s involvement. “It’s great to see students interested in the centre. It gives them something tangible to work with by allowing real experience in a working community centre,” she said.

Revival of an ancient Aboriginal tradition
Head to Sunshine Coast Council’s Beerwah Library from September 2 until September 16 to view the ‘Gubbi Gubbi Gun'doo Yang'ga'man’ exhibition and gain a rare insight into traditional Aboriginal bark canoe making. You are invited to join Lyndon Davis for a bush tucker afternoon tea on Friday, September 12 from 2.00pm to 3.30pm when he will share his journey as a key artist in this unique project. Watercraft is an important yet relatively unexamined aspect of Aboriginal heritage in Australia. It is believed to be more than 150 years since a traditional bark canoe has been seen on local waterways. Across south-east Queensland the skills and traditions of bark canoe making have been largely lost. The ‘Gubbi Gubbi Gun'doo Yang'ga'man’ research and reconstruction project has sought to fully investigate and revive the Gubbi Gubbi tradition of bark canoe building. This exhibition documents these activities and promotes the project’s national significance and value for the community. It marks the historic revival of an ancient tradition and showcases many of its forgotten aspects. This canoe building revitalisation project ensures that these long held traditions survive further into the future by creating a legacy for generations to come. The Gubbi Gubbi canoe builders include Lyndon Davis, Brent Miller, Nathan Morgan and Kerry Jones. The exhibition will be on display at Beerwah Library until September 16. To book for the afternoon tea and talk by Lyndon Davis call 1300 542 727 or visit Council’s library website.
There’s a big unanswered question at the heart of one of the lounge room treasures in Bankfoot House, a couch that’s at least 150 years old. This priceless piece of furniture is a three-seater timber and fabric couch. The graceful curved timber back of the couch complements the scrollend curved timber arms, which are decorated with stylised leaves, and the legs are made of turned timber. Research by the volunteers has shown a similar couch of that era was upholstered with woven horsehair, made from hair taken from the manes and tails of horses, woven together with another longer thread such as linen. Two old photographs from the 1860s show the Bankfoot couch could have originally been upholstered with a similar fabric. Clementina Burgess nee Grigor, who lived in Bankfoot House all her life, had the couch re-upholstered in cotton fabric with a floral and pink striped design, its present covering. The question is: was the couch brought from Scotland or made in Australia? The hessian lining the underside of the couch is stamped with ‘Arbroath’, the name of a town
in Scotland. This suggests the couch may have been made in Scotland – or was it only the hessian that came from Scotland? There are no other identifying marks. A similar style of couch was made in Tasmania in the 1820s, which suggests the Bankfoot couch could have been made in Australia, but the question will probably never be answered. In the Bankfoot collection there is a photograph of Mary Grigor’s sister, Clementina Fenwick, sitting on the couch in the 1860s, and another of Mary’s mother, Janet Fenwick, sitting on the couch. Both photographs were taken at William Grigor’s semi-detached cottage in Spring Hill, Brisbane. The roughly built stone wall of the cottage behind the couch is very evocative of the early days of Brisbane.
If you are interested in learning more about Bankfoot House and its occupants, please contact the Friends of Bankfoot House on ph 5493 0197 on a Wednesday or email friends@ bankfoothouse.org. Ron Gillinder, President – 0407 760 989, in conjunction with the Sunshine Coast Council.

Contributed by Tara Cooper Hands-on learning applied to real-life situations is what Pacific Lutheran College pride themselves on with the recent visits from ‘real’ firemen in their ‘real’ fire trucks to the Early Learning Centre There were smiles all round, excitement and cheers as firemen stepped off their fire truck into a crowd of thrilled children awaiting their much anticipated arrival. Children were able to gain valuable insights into the role of a fireman and fire safety at home and school. They checked out all the bells and whistles inside an actual fire truck, and were able to hold the 15 metre long fire hose as it released an explosive burst of water onto the college oval. The visit followed the Early Learning Centre’s recent unit of study into the roles and occupations of people in the community which involved class discussions, books, role-playing and prop creations – and topped off with the firemen’s visit.
Contributed by Kylie Merola The 135th anniversary of the Landsborough State School was recently celebrated in a unique musical that took the audience on a journey through the history books, highlighting the history behind both the school and the township. The production was written and produced by the school's Creative Industries teacher, Mel Peters, and was full of vibrant dance, energetic pop music and contemporary stage classics. The storyline reflected back to when Landsborough was originally known as 'Mellum Creek', the days of timber mills, floods, steam trains, war time and the importance of the railway line to the town's development. There were lots of historical facts hidden throughout the script to educate and entertain both children and adults. The students have been rehearsing for months, singing, dancing and practicing their lines to ensure a polished performance. Every student enrolled at the school played a role in the production, either performing individually or with their class group. Monthly Finance Money Guide with Tracey Ferguson Ferguson Financial Planning Pty Ltd Phone: 5475 4511 Email: tracey@closefs.com.au The 1st of July each year often comes with a number of changes to tax and super legislation. This year’s changes included an increase to the Medicare levy; increases to both the concessional and non-concessional superannuation contribution caps; an increase to the employer superannuation guarantee contributions (SGC) that must be made; as well as the introduction of the temporary budget repair levy (to name a few). Medicare Levy The Medicare levy has increased by 0.5% and is now at 2%, meaning that it will cost an additional $200 per annum on a $40,000 wage. This has been brought in to provide additional funds towards National Disability Scheme. Superannuation contributions There are two main types of contributions that can be made to super, concessional and nonconcessional. The amount of concessional contributions that can be made by a member to their super fund has increased from $25,000 to $30,000 per year (or $35,000 for those over 49) with the non-concessional contributions cap increasing from $150,000 to $180,000 per year. Concessional contributions are those for which a tax deduction is being claimed and they can be made as a self employed person or by an employer on behalf of their employee in the form of super guarantee contributions (SGC) or as part of a salary sacrifice arrangement.
SGC contributions paid by your employer increased from 9.25% to 9.5% and will stay at this rate until 2018 when it will start to increase again until 2026 when it reaches 12%. It is important to be mindful when setting up a salary sacrifice strategy to remember that your employer super guarantee contributions will count toward the annual concessional cap so check how much your employer has and will be contributing each financial year prior to setting up to ensure that you do not exceed the legislated caps. If you are an employee who has realised significant capital gain as a result of an asset such as an investment property, or shares, and you have surplus funds available to cover living and other expenses; you could consider salary sacrificing employment income to reduce your overall taxable income, therefore reducing the amount of capital gains tax you might have to pay. Non-concessional contributions are those for which no tax deduction will be claimed. Those below age 65 can also choose to bring forward 2 years’ worth of non-concessional contributions (making $540,000 of contributions in one financial year), meaning that in total, an individual could potentially contribute up to $570,000 (age 49 and under) or $575,000 (between 50 and 65) in one year when combined with their concessional contributions. Temporary Budget Repair Levy Taxpayers earning over $180,000 will have a 2% increase in their marginal rate of tax – from 45% to 47% in an aim to help repair the government budget injecting an extra $3.1 billion over the three years to 2017. The Government

Business Feature tells us that in the current financial year, around 400,000 taxpayers (or less than 4% of taxpayers) are likely to be effected by the Deficit Levy, so for the average income earner, this change will have no effect. Could your super be the key to a new home? Have you been struggling to put together your deposit for a home, enabling you to access a first buyer home loan? You may not be alone! The Real Estate Institute of Australia think that this is an ongoing issue for first home buyers, and that your superannuation could be the answer to accessing home loans. REIA President Peter Bushby wants people to be able to access their super funds for a deposit on a home, and then repay this over a longer period. This means you could buy a home much earlier in 18

life, and access bigger and better equity from it. This could give you not one, but two nest eggs from an early age. If you’re looking into a first home loan, this could be of interest to you in the future. While superannuation home deposits are not a reality for Australians yet, it is a scheme that has been seen in other countries like Canada and New Zealand. The ability to get a foothold in the property market early on could be invaluable, especially if you find a home in a high growth area. Just imagine, you could be a homeowner
well before you ever expected to! Depending on how much you have stored in your super and the amount you’re able to access {how much you’re able to access?}, you may be able to bypass lenders mortgage insurance as well. This could reduce the overall time you spend paying a loan off. While those with existing home loans can access their superannuation in some circumstances to clear debt, opening up superannuation for first home buyers is an exciting possibility. For more information
on how to make your home deposit work best for you, a mortgage broker can provide advice on this important part of home preparation.

MicroBirth – what’s it all about?
MicroBirth is a new feature-length documentary being premiered worldwide on Saturday, September 20, it is being screened in over 1,000 places and Maleny is one of them. The documentary investigates the latest scientific research that is starting to link the way babies are born with health in later life. In particular it looks at the increased risk of children developing certain immunerelated conditions, including asthma, type 1 diabetes, celiac (coeliac) disease, obesity, Event organiser Sarah cardio-vascular diseases, mental health Crossfoot with baby Xavier disorders and even some cancers. The purpose of the documentary is to raise public awareness of the importance of ‘seeding the baby’s microbiome’ at birth with the mother’s own bacteria – this bacteria helps train the immune system to recognise what is ‘friend’ and what is ‘foe’. The film will run for an hour and a half and will be presented in the Main Hall at the Maleny Community Centre, 6.30pm for 7.00pm start (babes in arms are welcome). Event organiser Sarah Crossfoot said profits will be donated to the Sunshine Coast Maternity Consumer Group / Friends of the Birth Centre Sunshine Coast. “The group is advocating for better birth services on the Sunshine Coast / Hinterland (including re-opening birth services at Maleny Hospital, and not shutting down the Maternity Unit at Nambour – which are both significant local issues,” she said. Ticket cost is $12.00 and they are available online at http://www. capersbookstore.com.au/product.asp?id=1928&t=Microbirth+Film+Screen ing+Maleny+20+September

Health Health Matters Matterswith Braxton Turnage 9 Health Enhancing Tips
with Braxton Doctor ofTurnage Chiropractic Doctor of Chiropractic
1. Drop grains from your diet, even whole grains. Grains quickly turn into sugar in your body and do nearly as much harm. 2. Switch to grass-fed animal products. Meat and dairy products from grain-fed, factory farmed animals are full of hormones, antibiotics, GMOs, herbicides and pesticides. 3. Detox heavy metals from your system. This should only be done under the guidance of a health practitioner trained in the proper protocol. Visit drpompa.com for more info. 4. Cut out toxic vegetable oils. These bad fats promote chronic inflammation. Did you know it takes 102 days for your body to process all the negative effects of trans fat, the fat found in fast food chips? 5. Try Burst Training. Want to exercise less and see more results? Performed in short, intense ‘bursts’ and works by pushing your hormones for weight loss and anti-aging in the right direction. Burst training also promotes fat burning for 24-36 hours after the session. 6. Eat more unpasteurised fermented foods. Unpasteurised, living foods like homemade sauerkraut, yogurt, kimchi, miso and kombucha boast trillions of bacteria, compared to billions in the best probiotics on the market. 7. Upgrade your morning coffee. Prepared in the right way, coffee super charges your brain to take on a new day. Stir in a few spoonfuls of any of the following fats to make your coffee a super health food: grass-fed, organic heavy cream; organic butter; butter oil; coconut oil or full-fat coconut milk; or MCT oil. If you must use a sweetener, use a pinch of high quality stevia. 8. Experiment with fasting to heal your immune system and gut. A recent study at the University of Southern California suggested that fasting (consuming only liquid) for three consecutive days can completely reboot the immune system. 9. Change your mindset. Our mind has more of an impact on our physical health than most of us like to acknowledge, and is often more powerful than the physical things we do to get ourselves well. Begin to take stock of the things in your life you need to change to impact your health, such as removing major physical and emotional stressors.

Re: Won’t convince me
I cannot allow Mr Bonhomme's ignorant rant (GCNews September 3) to go unchallenged. The Kabi Kabi and Jinibara people do have a legitimate and cultural right to expect the same observance of their religions and traditions as we Europeans expect from the first people to populate this land. Imagine if you will, Aboriginals climbing the Great Synagogue of Sydney, St James' Church, St Mary's Cathedral etc etc etc and whilst climbing these icons of western tradition, destroying artifacts housed within these sites. Ah, envisage the reaction from the pious and devoted population of Australia. May it be suggested that non-indigenous with the wish to perpetuate the myth of the benign settler/pioneer of Australia read the publications of historians Reynolds and Gammage before launching into print with little or no comprehension of the true scope of the European invasion of Australia. But then again some people do not want history to get in the way of a good tirade. P. Wallace Palmview
Regarding downturn in RSL business
In Mr Peter Watt’s letter to the Editor (GCNews September 3) he expressed no surprise to the lack of support for the RSL. I too do not find it surprising that the Beerwah RSL is suffering from a lack of business. On several occasions I was left stranded and had to call for transport home because the staff felt they were too busy to drive me home in the courtesy bus (at the time it was advertised as being available seven days a week). The final straw for me was the night that that I was told that I would have to wait half an hour for them to take me home. I left and walked to the hotel where I was able to get their bus home. As my balance is not good and I walk with the aid of a stick this was not exactly an easy task for me. As I left the club that evening I handed back my membership card and told them I would no longer require it as I would not be returning. As I was in the habit of spending at least four nights a week (and about $500.00 to $600.00 a week) and I am only one person, multiply that by everyone else they have driven away. It's no wonder they have no business. Alan Phizacklea Glass House Mountains
Hinterland Relay for Life I write to thank the many Sunshine Coast Hinterland residents who have already registered to participate in this year’s Relay for Life to be held at Glass House Mountains in support of Cancer Council Queensland. With not long to go until the big event, I urge others to join us in celebrating cancer survivors, remembering loved ones lost, and fighting back against a disease that takes too much away from our community. Community action is the key to making a difference in the lives of Queenslanders affected by cancer. Relay For Life is an inspiring community fundraising festival taking place over 18 hours, jam packed with action and entertainment for people of all ages. Funds raised at the Relay go towards vital cancer research, prevention and education programs, advocacy and patient support services. On the Sunshine Coast alone, more than 2,900 people are diagnosed with cancer each year, and many of our loved ones will face a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime. This is your chance to get involved and help us reduce the burden of cancer in your community. Cancer Council Queensland’s Hinterland Relay for Life will be held on October 18-19 at Glasshouse Mountains Sportsclub. Register a team at www.relayforlife.org.au or phone the Fundraising Hotline 1300 65 65 85 to volunteer at the event. CEO Prof Jeff Dunn AO Cancer Council Queensland
A very big Daffodil Day thank you
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the shops, business and schools that sold the display boxed merchandise. These businesses are from the area of Glass House, Landsborough and Beerwah. A very big thank you to all the willing volunteers that helped sell the fresh daffodils and merchandise on the stalls over Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The dedication of some of these women was admirable as they sat at stalls experiencing unfavourable weather conditions. To these people I say a huge thank you for your commitment. A total amount of $9,942.00 was raised for Cancer Council’s Daffodil Day from this area. I sincerely appreciate everyone's help and support for this great cause. Glenda Halpin Co-ordinator
Conditions Please keep your letters under 300 words, your name, address and daytime phone number must be supplied. Letters must focus on issues and not be personal attacks on individuals. Letters may be edited.
The new Myla Road Bridge was opened to traffic on September 5. The new wider bridge with dedicated walkway will significantly improve safety for road users. Flood immunity has also been greatly improved due to the raising of the bridge level and widening of the waterway. On behalf of Council I want to thank residents and Myla Road users for their patience during the construction.

Never to return again
Two years ago at the Caloundra RSL, while enjoying a night out and trying to distance ourselves from the band playing, we decided to go to the pokie area to engage in conversation. We were told in no uncertain terms that we had to leave the gaming room even though we were not sitting on any of the chairs or impeding access to the precious machines. I'm sure the diggers would all turn in their grave. We left never to return again. Name supplied Glass House Mountains
Our apologies
To the diners who attended the RSL for lunch and dinner on Thursday, September 4, please accept the club’s apology for the unsatisfactory meals served on that day. The matter has now been rectified and we will ensure it does not happen again. Gavin Smith President, Beerwah RSL

Pararchidendron pruinosum var. pruinosum In the garden this stunning small tree provides a spectacle of fluffy white to greenish fragrant pom pom flowers, turning later to yellow from October to January. The seed pods themselves are flattened and twisted, pale yellow on the outside and brilliant red / orange on the inside with shiny black seeds. Snow Wood is found from tropical, sub-tropical, warm temperate, littoral and riverine rainforests from north Queensland to the Illawarra region in NSW making it a very versatile rainforest specimen. Snow Wood is a graceful looking tree due to its lacy light green leaves and its dark reddish trunk which is not buttressed at the base, making it an excellent choice for street plantings and gardens.

and plant lettuce seedlings in them to take home and grow,” Julie said. Costa is a landscape architect who has an all-consuming passion for plants and people – he knows how to bring out the best in both of them, and takes great pleasure in bringing them together. Costa believes in embracing and celebrating mother nature’s cycles and seasons and nurturing her balance, beauty and bounty organically. His holistic approach is all about gardening the soil and the soul. For more information see the story on page 3 visit the website at www.realfoodfestivals.com.au
Gardening Guru Costa Georgiadis from Gardening Australia will be joining in the fun at the Real Food Festival this weekend in Maleny. Costa, a gardening enthusiast who is passionate about sourcing local ingredients to use in cooking, will be sharing the limelight with students from Montville and Conondale State Schools who are involved in Stephanie Alexander’s Kitchen Garden program. Stephanie Alexander created the Kitchen Garden program in 2001 to encourage kids to learn how to grow and cook their own fruit and vegetables. Festival Director Julie Shelton said that having Costa on board to help the local kids share what they learn was very exciting. “The kids from two of our local State Schools are thrilled that Costa will be helping them out during the festival. “Among other things, Costa will be helping the kids recycle used coffee cups from the festival

The Sunshine Coast Spring Wildflower Festival Committee has produced a handy new self-guide set of walks for residents and the general public to enjoy the wildflower season this Spring on the Sunshine Coast. Covering the region from Beerwah to Noosa North Shore, 10 of the most botanically diverse and accessible walks have been described with detailed walking maps. Information on track grades, facilities, and directions have been included.
On the back of the guide, 42 of the most commonly found wildflowers are described with colour photos for easy identification. This handy pocket-size publication folds out into a 30 x 55 cm double-sided page. It can be used for 2014 and beyond, in future wildflower seasons. The self-guide aims to give people the information they need to confidently take the walks themselves in small groups. The wildflower identification tool aims to enhance the experience and educate the public on the fantastic diversity of wildflowers we have in this region. Pick up a copy of the guide from the Beerwah Library or from Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve.

Get up&Grow with Jade King Jade is a local wife and mum, soil scientist and teacher who is passionate about vegetable gardening
Spring into the garden!
Already we’ve been enjoying some delightfully warm days beckoning you outside to enjoy the veggie patch, as well as provide that energy boost, needed after the Winter chill. The change in season heralds the beginning of loads of new plantings. Every year I get excited about changing over to Spring and Summer crops. It’s the combination of new plants and challenges, anticipation for the welcome change of seasonal produce on the dinner plate, and knowing that most of the produce from these plantings will be part of our Christmas celebrations. On this note, I am rampantly planting in all the summer vegetables with the intention of having a heap of fresh salad vegetables to harvest for all the outdoor barbecues I plan to enjoy in the back yard this summer. Red, yellow and pink cherry tomatoes, crispy cucumber, fresh grated beetroot, carrot sticks, juicy corn and capsicum on a bed of mixed lettuce leaves, all straight from the backyard! However, as usual, we are not the only ones keenly getting out and about in this beautiful weather … once again I’ve been astonished to note that on the very first day of warmer temperatures, I witness the very beautiful fluttering of white wings belonging to the most unwelcome, yet most frequent visitor to my garden – the White Cabbage Butterfly! Never fear though, I add a weekly to fortnightly Dipel application and butterfly catching to my combat regime.

With the warmer weather fast approaching, this time of year sees a resurgence of ticks and fleas. Of particular concern for our pets is the paralysis tick which is particularly prevalent from now until Christmas. If an animal is bitten, early symptoms to look out for include vomiting and a change in bark / meow. These symptoms then progress to a paralysis of the back end which if left untreated can develop into complete paralysis and unfortunately can eventuate in death. Symptoms usually present between two to five days. Early treatment is always the best option. If you suspect that your animal has been bitten, bring them in as soon as possible to be treated with tick anti serum, which can be supported by a holistic care program. Prevention is always recommended. Ticks can be very aggressive and they are prevalent (but not restricted to) scrubby areas. Wherever possible try to keep your property maintained and the grass short during this risk period. The paralysis tick is blue / bottle green in colour and the majority of ticks will attach themselves to the area in front of the animal’s front legs. Often starting small, the tick will progressively increase in size as it feeds on the animal’s blood. Preventative measures available at Glass House Holistic Veterinary Service include a variety of products such as collars and spot on topical treatments. We recommend daily searching of your pet's skin and coat also. Again these treatments can be assisted with a holistic care program that can be tailored to your pets’ individual needs.

Is your backyard safe?
We all want to make sure we keep our beloved pets healthy, safe and out of harm’s way, but sometimes there are dangers lurking in our backyards that we’re unaware of. Ticks are becoming active and Dorry from Glass House Holistic Vet has all the information you need to know in her column on this page. Snakes are on the move – so watch out if you have piles of firewood and timber, rocks and sheet metal lying around. And although not all snakes are poisonous, others such as pythons can become a danger to birds, and smaller pets. Cane toads have been dormant over winter, but are now starting to hop about at night. New pets need to be taught not to play with these poisonous pests. There are a lot of common garden plants that we all know to be poisonous to pets and people. Carpet snake Oleander, Foxglove, Angels Trumpet, Rhubarb leaves and White Cedar berries just to name a few. But did you know that Agapanthus can cause nausea, vomiting and mouth ulcers? The berries of Duranta (Sheena’s Gold or Geisha Girl) can be fatal if swallowed and have killed pets. Brunfelsia (Yesterday Today Tomorrow) has been known to kill dogs that have eaten the leaves. Cycad fruit is deadly and will kill even large stock animals if eaten. And the list goes on … Protecting your pets from dangers is mostly about using your common sense, but if you need help identifying poisonous plants, there is a great book called ‘Poisonous 2 Pets’ (see www.publish.csiro.au/pid/6706.htm).

Sunday Roast in ‘The Shed’
The Ettamogah Pub’s famous Sunday Roast made a return to ‘The Shed' recently and it will be on again on September 21, October 19, November 9, and December 21. It is a great day out with live entertainment, cold beers and a great roast lunch, and makes for a perfect way to catch up with family and friends for an afternoon. If you haven’t seen or heard the multi award winning Uncle Bob's Jug Band you are in for a treat. They are one of Australia’s favourite variety bands with five diverse and very talented musicians, playing instruments such as tea chest bass, mandolin, washboards, lead guitar, harmonica, rhythm guitar, kazoo, dobro and of course jug, combined with five part harmonies and occasional thong clapping. Price is $20.00 for adults and $15.00 for children 12 and under.
The Maleny Film Society will screen ‘The HundredFoot Journey’ on Saturday, September 13, at the Maleny Community Centre in Maple Street. Displaced from their home in Mumbai, India, the Kadam family arrive in a French village that just happens to have an abandoned restaurant building opening up great opportunities for the family. The near-by owner of an up-market restaurant (Helen Mirren) has other ideas and sets out to sabotage the Indian family’s restaurant restoration. Doors open at 6.00pm for a 7.15pm screening, dinner catered by Spaghetti Junction, tea, coffee and slices are also available.

Update: Mobile phone black spot forum Earlier this year I hosted a forum at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club to discuss community concerns on mobile phone reception, specifically in the Hinterland communities. The Department of Communications have advised that the Mobile Blackspot Programme received nominations of over 4,000 locations across Australia with poor or no mobile coverage. I had the opportunity to nominate three locations which I believe were the areas in most need of funding from the Programme. All three locations I nominated were in the Hinterland. The Government expects to commence a competitive selection process in the second half of 2014, with a view to announcing the locations which have been selected for funding in the first half of 2015. I will continue to keep the community updated as information comes to hand.

Charity Cricket Match is on again
Safe Night Out Strategy
Excitement is building in the Hinterland community with news that my 5th annual Charity Cricket Match will be held at Aub Cork Oval in Maleny from 12.00noon on Saturday, September 27. This event has become a highly anticipated fixture on our local calendar with both teams already undertaking intensive training regimes! I am pleased to announce several big names to the Andrew Powell Celebrity XI including the Deputy Premier, Hon Jeff Seeney MP, Minister for Sport and Recreation, Hon Steve Dickson MP, Deb Frecklington MP, Verity Barton MP, Member for Broadwater and Member for Fisher Mal Brough MP. And that's just some of the Pollies - Sunshine Coast celebrities include Nugget from Zinc FM who always brings his humorous game commentary to keep the players and spectators amused. Locally, I am pleased to say Greg Williams, Charles Hodgson and Mick Glover are also ready and raring to go for another year. Many would say that with a team of players this good, we will be impossible to beat. Those Maleny Maulers and their infamous Captain Simon Denver will certainly have a battle on their hands this year! As many of you in the community know, last year we decided to make this annual event a tribute match to the late Maleny local, Dr Peter Oliver. Peter lost his battle with cancer last year so this event is now held in his honour and any money raised will go towards the Australian Lung Foundation. Sadly I must also say that Peter's wife recently lost her own battle with cancer so the game will pay tribute to Ann Oliver as well. The Maleny District Sports and Recreation Club (MDSRC) will again be doing much of the day's organisation and will be working hard to ensure we have some great snacks, drinks and barbecue treats for spectators to enjoy on match day. If you can help out in any way, either with man power or donations, (including if you would like to sponsor any sixes hit on the day) then please make contact with my office on 5435 2013 or Gail Denver from MDSRC on 0438 779 601.

As Member for Caloundra, I am acutely aware of the importance of public safety to residents of and visitors to Caloundra and the Hinterland, who simply want to feel safe after dark, whilst out enjoying our wonderful restaurants, great licenced venues and many other attractions. Unfortunately, we continue to see deaths and injuries as a result of alcohol related violence and Queenslanders have made it clear that violence and anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated in this state. Government is taking action to ensure we can all enjoy a safe night out. The strategy is a comprehensive range of initiatives to address violence, anti-social behaviour and safety issues around licensed venues. It is about patrons, venues, communities and Government coming together to create a safe, co-operative and vibrant culture for Queensland’s nightlife. In summary, the detailed strategy involves: 1. Stronger penalties – introduction of new penalties and compulsory counselling to make it clear that bad behaviour will not be tolerated 2. Targeted policing – increasing police powers and providing safe and supportive places through 15 Safe Night Precincts, ‘sober safe’ centre and more 3. Better prevention – enhancing the liquor licensing regime, raising awareness of clear standards of behaviour, and educating young Queenslanders (Years 7-12) to promote responsible behaviour. I will be doing all that I can to ensure Caloundra is a focus area of this strategy and is resourced appropriately to implement the strategy and will keep you informed on the progress made. I encourage you to read the strategy in full, which can be found at www.qld.gov.au/safenightout

Every careless word
Ever had a word said to you that grates, hurts, and makes the person who spoke it look a little silly? Has this ever been you? We read in Matthew 12:36 ‘I tell you, on the Day of Judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak’ (ESV) Ouch! This reprimand from Jesus ought to get our attention. The word ‘careless’ here means idle, ineffective, and useless. Why do you think these idle words of ours will be judged? Because they reveal our character—they interpret the thoughts and motives of our hearts. When have you seen or noticed a sloppiness or laziness among those you associate with? Once we were diligent to guard our mouths, however we are a society that is becoming more talkative, and wallowing around in foolishness. We constantly see a common leaning of people to joke and really treat what they speak as useless things meant to deceive, trick, and mislead (all in the name of fun). And often

people make little room for listening. How many careless words have I heard among family, colleagues and fellow Christians? How many careless words have I myself spoken? What about you, perhaps one could take a moment to reflect on how we speak and how this can change another’s reactions. I think that there is something in the saying ‘There is a reason God gave us two ears and only one mouth, perhaps it is that we were to listen more than we are meant to speak’. My prayer is that you seek to listen more than to speak idle words.

Beerwah Golf Ladies
Public Notice
Contributed by Monica Dangerfield There was a big field of 110 players on Thursday, August 28 as it was men invitation day. We played a 4BBB two person best score, which is a four person team with the two best stableford points counting. With four persons having a go, the winning team of Meg Ferran, Fay Raven, Graeme Black and Tom Faulkiner came in with the impressive score of 93 points. Hot on their tails in runner-up position with a score of 92 points was my team of Marshall Caldwell, Barb Whitfield, Frank Buckley and myself, Monica Dangerfield. Trophies on the day were sponsored by and presented by Mavis Brimelow, Lesley Eggleston, Pam Gormley and Lyn Nichols. Pin shots for the day went to the following teams, No 2, M Thistlethwaite, B Dury, D Smith and P Purvis, No 5, H and R Ballard, K Kirkby and G Tattam, No 16, J Runge, P Gormley K and M Horton, and No 18, S and G Williamson, D Ross and R Bowie. Ball run down went to 82 points. Also on Thursday, we had the pleasure of presenting a local family, Kevin and Maria, who

are raising their granddaughter, with proceeds from our invitation day that was held on August 19. Players from nine clubs on the Sunshine Coast, as well as our own ladies had a great day. With help from a few of the men, we were able to raise $1,505.00 to contribute to the family. With the generous sponsorship of Noelene and John Annakin of Glasshouse Pest Control and donations towards our raffles, and the auction of a patchwork quilt and a Santa, the funds raised far exceeded our expectations. Many thanks to all who contributed towards this successful day.

Beerwah Ladies Golf Club Contributed by Jenny Kelly Our greens staff has been hard at work coring and top dressing the greens, so the girls played the back nine twice so the lads could get on with it. We had a field of 51 come out to play a Single Stableford for trophies kindly donated by Janet Tuson and Grace Ferguson. Thanks girls for your support of our competition. The winner on the day and taking out Division 1 was Margaret Zonca with a terrific score of 42 points. Margaret was followed by Lyn Wallace who scored 37 points. Jan Corfield won Division 2 with 35 points with Di Smith runner up on 34 points. As we played the back nine twice, the NTP’s were on 16, where Gail Gundry came close to a hole in one, and the 18th

where Andrea Campbell took out Division 1 and Di Smith was closest in Division 2. Even though the pin was in a diabolical spot on the 17th, Heather Henn and Viki Bartel both managed birdies to take home the Birdie Box for the week. The ball rundown went to 31. Our greens will recover quickly from the routine maintenance and will soon be better than ever.

VIRGO August 23 – September 22 You would like to know in detail what is real and what, or who, you can count on, but clarity is fogged now under this week of the full Moon in your opposite sign of Pisces. You get a lot more oomph to energise your crusade for quality in your partnerships since Mars is to enter Sagittarius from mid month. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 You may find there are situations of a secretive nature around, as someone is either doing an investigation on some charitable undertakings, or perhaps just self-analysis. It’s best to focus on how to solve old problems and confidently release self defeating habits than be obsessed with personal limitations. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 This week you still have Mars in your sign until September 13. So it will be hard to contain your passion for someone you desire. However when Mars enters Sagittarius, mid month, it powers up the activity in your income sector, no doubt making you a risk taking financial adventurer. Impending changes coming. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 Under this full Moon week the Piscean energy brings you emotional confusion to your work or home sectors. You will feel motivated and be inspired this week, but nevertheless there is an undercurrent of pressure as a secret or suspicious conversation can put you at odds with a friend. Still, be positive.
Week beginning 10/09/14
CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 This is a time you could meet someone from a different country or background. Mainly because Mars enters Sagittarius mid-month. This is the sector for your inner awareness and energy to voice feelings of love and harmony. Comments you hear involving work can be challenging to your personality. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 This is the week when you will have the full Moon in Pisces falling across your financial axis. The answer to any chaos or confusion that arises is not to make a destabilising move, or let anyone challenge your credit standing. There is action with the things you borrow or lend to others regarding travel. PISCES February 20 – March 20 This could be a wonderful week for you as the full Moon is in your own sign bringing new awareness of your personal worth. It can bring clarity. Pursue new knowledge assertively. Be alert to what some may say, trying to pressure you with words. Be aware of any email con deals and avoid any scams. ARIES March 21 – April 20 This full Moon on Tuesday builds tension as it is in the sign of Pisces and is trying to work out the proper balance between your every day needs and your duties to others. Take care in your communications as in a split second of gossip you should not spill the beans on a secret or use information unethically.
TAURUS April 21 – May 21 This full Moon week brings Pisces to your Taurean sign and heightens sensitivities regarding the people you have chosen to be in your life. There may be an increase in awareness of vulnerabilities so old wounds have a chance for healing. Examine motives behind what people say so as to sort things out. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 This week plays up recent stresses between work and home. Just avoid any person’s outburst and think through to a solution. Watch out for negative thinking as this can give rise to suspicion, resentment, pressure or obsession. Be careful who you trust with private information. Good support from home base. CANCER June 22 – July 22 Break out of your ‘to do’ list and you will feel good getting things done in the now, rather than worrying about the next week. Organise files and get rid of clutter. Take steps to actualise a creative vision. Fears and insecurities can arise under the full Moon in Pisces but it is all about making you change now. LEO July 23 – August 22 This full Moon week in Pisces cuts across your financial sectors, bringing in more confusion or chaos than clarity and conviction. Do not jump the gun on a money project and do not be misguided to use your credit card unwisely. Perhaps you may be feeling like spending more on lotteries than you should.

II appeared in her hands. The husband thought for a moment: “Well, this is all very romantic, but an opportunity like this will never come again. I'm sorry my love, but my wish is to have a wife 30 years younger than me.” The wife, and the fairy, were deeply disappointed, but a wish is a wish. So the fairy waved her magic wand and poof!... The husband became 92-years-old. Submitted by Hugh Jones, Beerwah

40 years of marriage A married couple in their early 60s are celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary in a quiet, romantic little restaurant. Suddenly, a tiny yet beautiful fairy appeared on their table. She said, “for being such an exemplary married couple and for being loving to each other for all this time, I will grant you each a wish.” The wife answered, “oh, I want to travel around the world with my darling husband.” The fairy waved her magic wand and - poof! - two tickets for the Queen Mary
