Hi Everyone
W
riting a column every week – means that sometimes I am scratching my head for a topic, and I have my own personal rule about not relying on the weather as a topic (unless it has been really extreme). However my weather rule doesn’t actually extend to discussion about the seasons and I guess you are thinking Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn – but what I am thinking about at the moment is my favourite season Strawberry Season. Yes this week is the first of the Charity Sports ‘Super Strawberry’ competition – I know when that week finally

gets here it is time for some great local strawberries! And going by Helen Page’s report, the season got off to a slow start with too much rain and not too many big specimens. But I was relieved to see that this week there was a worthy winner and I look forward to the competition hotting up! I know some people like to follow the footie, the tennis, or the cricket, but for me, I love nothing better than to watch the results of the Super Strawberry – and fantasise about nice, big fat juicy strawberries. If like me you have a not-so-secret passion for the fruit – check out the size of this week’s winner on page 31.

Beerwah locals honoured as ‘Hope Ambassadors’ Beerwah local Kerry Jarvis and her team of cancer crusaders have started up the Coastal Village Markets. They’ve been awarded the prestigious title of Cancer Council Queensland Hope Ambassadors for their work in the fight against cancer. As Hope Ambassadors, the team will join a group of around 94 fundraisers who have been chosen to take part in an invite-only campaign, CancerFREE Challenge. CancerFREE Challenge rewards and acknowledges CCQ’s most talented fundraisers in the state, with each participant working towards the goal of raising more than $10,000 throughout the year by participating in national events and community fundraisers. Organisers of the markets, who are friends from the Beerwah community, are taking part in the challenge to fight back against cancer on behalf of all those who have been affected. The Coastal Village Markets are held once a month on a Sunday at the Beerwah Sports Grounds (Simpson Street, Beerwah), and all proceeds from stall holders fees, raffles, bouncy castle and drinks are generously donated to CCQ. “One of our team, Julie Robinson, first started up the markets in April this year. The shop will provide a place where people can meet friends, family or colleagues in Anita Cassidy and Jess a colourful, inviting and Dorrett of 24 Nutrition best of all, fun place. Gaiel Willis has also recently opened the doors to her pet pampering salon Little Mutz Cutz in Peachester Road, next door to Animal House. Gaiel will not just be taking care of washing and clipping your pets, but also is offering a doggy daycare service in a safe and friendly environment. Meanwhile, over near the Big Mower, Dorothea Hofman has opened up a surgery for her Glass House Holistic Vet Service. Previously she was providing a home visit service ... now she is able to also undertake routine veterinary surgical procedures at her new surgery on the corner of Swan Street and Beerwah Parade. In the coming weeks it seems that there are a couple of other businesses opening in Beerwah.

A new video shop - the DVD Barn owned and operated by Beerwah couple Leigh and Krystle Ranger - will open in early August next door to Flair Jewellery with over 4500 movie titles on offer. And the signage down at Turner Park (next door to Curves) says that a Pizza Shop will be opening, Mama and Papa’s Pizzeria. According to the owners, it should be ready for business early next week. So while this doesn't fill all of the empty shops, it is a positive sign of things to come and we wish each of the businesses all the best! Following on from Council’s Beerwah Place + project, an action group has formed of current business owners who are keen to work together to identify issues affecting local business and to brainstorm how these issues can be overcome. Action Group spokesperson, Lisa Sauer from Top Gun Panel and Paint said “we need to identify the most important issues and then work as a collective group to effect positive change.” The next meeting is on next Tuesday, July 16 at BADYACC, at the Beerwah Sportsground and kicks off at 6.00pm. Last week, we brought you the great news that from the Council budget, $4 million has been allocated to totally rejuvenate the Beerwah town centre. Over the coming year, Council will oversee and implement some amazing changes to Simpson Street and Mawhinney Street – transformations which will shape the future look and community perception of Beerwah for many, many years to come. Originally, the project plan was for $1 million to be allocated to start the streetscaping in this year’s (2013/14) budget and a further $2 million in 2014/15 to finish the work. But last week, Cr Rick Baberowski announced that the whole project has been brought forward, with all the work to be completed in this coming financial year, and with an added extra $1 million being allocated for improved works – such as undergrounding the power. Changes are going to start very soon, with some of the works scheduled to commence at the end of July (weather permitting). The planned changes for Mawhinney and Simpson Streets are definitely significant. But the planned changes haven’t been taken lightly and haven’t been made without the community’s involvement. The major works was based upon the outcomes of the award winning Beerwah Place + program. Although the outcomes of this consultation and engagement process may not be well known across the broader community, the whole project has been guided by what we all had to say as part of Beerwah Place +.
By Greg Brown
What will end up on the ground is directly related to what we told Council we wanted. So, what did we all say? “I would love for Beerwah to be a place that I don’t have to leave to shop elsewhere, and yet still retain the village atmosphere.” “Make the main street a boutique food / café, art and craft hub capitalising on local artists and farmers.” “We need a nice market area servicing community fundraising, street stalls etc.” “I love the small community feeling, living, exercise, clean air, gardens; the friendliness of the locals, and the cycling and walking pathways.” “We need better linking of the shopping precincts, so that the small business operators have a user friendly link encouraging custom to all areas.” “Give Beerwah a green country heart by creating a landscaped link between Turner Park and the town centre.” From all the meetings, discussions, talks and surveys, the final Beerwah Place + document interpreted what we wanted and summarised it into what is a very neat couple of paragraphs. ‘The Beerwah community has a vision for its town to grow a bright future. Beerwah will retain its country feel, build a vibrant, safe and pedestrian friendly town centre, work towards environmental sustainability, create a cohesive and healthy community, balance growth with quality of life, strengthen its connection with the iconic Glass House Mountains and advance local business into the future.
A consolidated town centre will form a civic heart for the town with vibrant businesses and activated streets, where people browse, linger and meet up with friends. A pedestrian friendly streetscape will allow for formal and informal seating, dining and gathering. Buildings and public spaces will reflect the country town character and include visual links to the town’s horticultural heritage, while being modern, comfortable and incorporating sustainable design principles. Open space links will play an important part of the town’s fabric with green space along both sides of the railway line, and pathways linking the town centre with the schools, sports ground and community facilities.’ This vision is what has guided the planning and design for the streetscaping. This was our community vision. Council has listened and has allocated the necessary money to make it happen. Council have put their money where their mouth is – and it’s up to us all now to have some faith and show some self-control when the machines roll in and the earthworks start. And it’s up to us all to support the local businesses in these areas by shopping with them, even if it’s a little inconvenient to get to them or to park. If we want a vibrant, attractive, inviting and friendly town centre in the future, we have to support the existing businesses during this transition period – both with our paying patronage and our empathetic understanding. If we don’t – do we really deserve to have the $4 million spent on us to begin with? Next week, we’ll take a look at what the new streetscaping has in store for us.

It’s NAIDOC time again The National Aboriginal and Islander Day of Celebration (NAIDOC) family fun day will bring the whole community together to celebrate with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and share in their cultures. The NAIDOC family fun day will be held next Sunday, July 14 at Cotton Tree Park from 10.00am to 4.00pm. While the event will be held at Cotton Tree, you can expect plenty of involvement from talented Glasshouse Country locals including De Greer-Yindimincarlie from Beerwah who will be performing in The Yindi Band as well as Tidda Girls with Lydia Fairhall (Landsborough). Beerwah’s Johnny and Jamie Woulfe will also be performing from Level 6 dance crew. Impossible Odds will be running workshops through the morning on Lyric writing and Beat Boxing techniques, with participants to showcase their skills later in the afternoon. Local Indigenous fashion designer Natalie Cunningham from Landsborough will be showing off her latest resort and swimwear lines with a fashion parade. The Yindi Dress
Natalie has been working in collaboration with award winning local Indigenous artist/graphic designer De Greer-Yindimincarlie to develop art/ design prints for her new lines. De and Natalie also collaborated for last year’s fashion parade with the development of ‘The Yindi Dress’, which was extremely well received at last year’s Sunshine Coast NAIDOC celebrations. Beerwah’s Fitness Matters gym will also be represented on the day with their stall, and they will be running fitness challenges throughout the day with prizes to be won. There will be plenty of stuff for the kids including a jumping castle, rock wall and giant slide, along with some great competitions ‘So you think you can didj’, and ‘Murri Idol’, with great prizes to be won.

Sore neck and shoulders?
Are your sore neck and shoulders making life less enjoyable? Does sitting at the computer, driving, or even reading a book cause a burning discomfort in your shoulders that spreads up into the base of your skull? If so, you may be suffering from Spinal Subluxation and poor posture – 2 common problems that chiropractic care is very effective in relieving. Subluxation is the term chiropractors use to describe ‘dysfunctional’ vertebrae in the spine. This occurs when the spine loses normal motion and/or position, and can cause wear and tear on the discs, ligaments, muscles and other spinal tissues. Subluxation can also have an affect on the nerves exiting the spine – leading to even more issues of pain and poor health. Today’s lifestyle encourages us to fall into ‘forward head posture’ - where our head sits in front of our shoulders – rather than in line with the shoulders as it should. This forward posture has a significant impact on your health and your appearance and if left unaddressed, tends to get worse as you get older. Researchers agree that for every 2.5cm of forward head posture there is an equivalent increase of 4.5kg of stress on the neck. It’s no wonder poor posture is such a pain! Poor posture and Spinal Subluxation often result in back aches, neck pain, jaw pain, loss of lung capacity, gastrointestinal problems, pre-disposition to arm, shoulder and rotator cuff injuries and the list goes on. Fortunately, we can help! Call Adjust to Life Chiropractic today to find out if Spinal Subluxation is the cause of your discomfort. The 2013 Cans4Films Festival Every year, two million Aussies rely on food relief at some point – alarmingly, children make up half that figure. And for a problem that touches so many people in Australia, it’s one that seems to be swept under the table. But make no mistake: this issue is real and it’s impacting more lives than you might expect. That’s why Network Video Landsborough is proud to present the sixth annual Cans4Films Festival, an in-store initiative that’s designed to provide tangible help in delivering hunger relief across the nation. Helping is simple - do your bit to end hunger by simply donating a can of food at your local Network Video store and in doing so, you will receive a free weekly rental; donate two cans and receive three free weekly rentals. You get a great night’s entertainment, and you ensure that someone’s not going hungry. If you don’t have any spare cans, you can still contribute by offering a gold coin donation in-store, which will then be used to purchase more cans of food to feed those who need it the most.

Wilfred Rocker is proud to be part of the Cans4Films Festival And it’s a solution that works - since its inception, Network Video through Cans4Films has raised more than 310,000 cans of food nationally, that have been delivered to local food shelters and charities. That equates to more than 150 tonnes of food. “All of us are proud to be part of the Cans4Films Festival in 2013,” said Wilfred Rocker from Network Video Landsborough. “It’s such a great cause, and we’re so happy to be providing practical solutions to such a big problem in today’s society.” Focusing on supporting their surrounding local communities, each Network Video store works with a local charity to ensure the food gets directly to those who need it the most.

The presentation will be broken into two sessions to provide practical information on preventing and reducing cancer risk, and the services and support available from Cancer Council Queensland for people impacted by cancer. Cancer Council Queensland Cancer Support Coordinator Clare Howard said the presentation would be of great value to locals and their families who have been touched by the disease, as well as others who would like to know more about reducing their risk. “We’re keen to ensure that people in the Glasshouse Country are aware of the cancer services available to them and have the opportunity to be informed about ways to reduce their cancer risk,” she said. Peachester cancer survivor Margarita Priori-Smith said that when she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer she made contact with Cancer Council Queensland, and having that support made a huge difference. “Now I volunteer as part of the Cancer Connect program,” she said. “The presentation will also provide important opportunities for locals to learn more about reducing their cancer risk.” The Cancer Council Queensland seminar will be held on Friday, July 19 from 10.00am. To reserve your seat or for more information please call Clare Howard on 5451 6004. To find out more about support services available from Cancer Council Queensland, please call the Cancer Council Helpline on 13 11 20 or visit www.cancerqld.org.au
Drivers from several countries will quench their thirsts and meet their fans when the International Rally of Queensland visits the Sunshine Coast’s Ettamogah Pub on Saturday, July 13. After a tough and dusty day’s competition on forestry Stages around Pomona and Imbil, the Ettamogah Pub, will host an early-evening stopover for competitors in the FIA Asia Pacific Rally Championship, East Coast Bullbars Australian Rally Championship and Australian Classic Rally Challenge. Cars will arrive at regular, short intervals from 6.10pm and each stop for 20 minutes in front of the pub to take a rest break and meet local fans. Event Director Errol Bailey says it’s likely the drivers from countries including Finland, France, India and Japan have never seen anything like the oddlyshaped Ettamogah, said by its operators to be “the most photographed pub in the world.” “The crews will be on their way back to Caloundra for an overnight stop, but I’m sure will be happy to stop for a break and meet fans, especially families with young children, who haven’t been able to get out into the forest during the day.” The Ettamogah Pub will be one of seven locations the rally visits for competition or stopovers from the start on Friday night to the finish on Sunday afternoon.

Contributed by Ursula Starkovsky Every year at the end of June, elected Rotary Presidents take over the reins from their predecessors and this year is no different. Congratulations to the elected President Ross Horne and a big Thank You to the immediate past President John Kemp for a job well done. President John has guided our Rotary Club through the past year with much compassion and love, not just for Rotary causes, but also for some members of our community who are doing it tough. At the changeover night, President John thanked the Club Members and Rotary Friends for their help and support and then handed over a donation to our local swimmer Joselyn Evans towards her participation at the Newcastle Games. Further, President John presented a Paul Harris Fellow to Mike Turner and our own Faye McKenzie (website mistress!) was presented with the ‘Service above Self’ award. DG Trevor Taylor presented the Paul Harris Sapphire Pin to outgoing President John Kemp and a Paul Harris Fellow to Ross Horne.
Members of our Glasshouse Mountains Rotary Club are now looking forward to a New Rotary Year, a new President, new challenges and new opportunities. We are always happy to welcome guests or possible new members to our Rotary Meetings held at the Beerwah Hotel on the first and third Monday of each month. For more information visit our website www.glasshouserotary.com.au or call 0478 813 630.

New program ‘Ask Wendy’ launched The Landsborough Museum is proud to announce the unveiling of its’ intranet program aptly named ‘Ask Wendy’. The program was officially launched by Cr Rick Baberowski at a wine and cheese evening on June 18, and those attending were invited to explore the program. It will make the accessing of on-site information much easier for volunteers, visitors, and researchers, etc. as it incorporates all areas of the museum databases. Many hours of hard work, brainstorming and fine-tuning have gone into the development of the program and we are justly proud of it and appreciative of the people who have put in the time and effort to bring it to fruition. Our thanks to Steve Ralph who presented the museum with a cheque that evening for $350.00, from the now defunct Glasshouse Mountains Heritage Group and to all those who attended the ‘Ask Wendy’ launch.

House Treasures
Older visitors to Bankfoot House are quick to recognise some of the treasures located in a glass-fronted cabinet on the back verandah. For example: a variety of pipes, old tobacco tins, a glass scent bottle with stopper and a bottle of Condy’s Crystals. There’s also a gold wristlet watch which was a gift by Jack Ferris to his wife Mary on their wedding day in February 1925. A warranty from Swift Jewellers and Watchmakers, Queen Street, Brisbane, accompanies the watch. Jack Ferris’s silver cigarette case with his initials JCF engraved on the front sits in the cabinet beside a circular box labelled Yardley Dusting Powder Perfumed with English Lavender. There’s also a leather stitched cricket ball and two sets of balance weights for use when weighing items on scales. If you remember shoe trees there’s a pair in the cabinet too. The shoe trees approximating the shape of a foot are placed inside a leather shoe to preserve its shape. They have a shaped wooden piece for the toe connected by a metal stem to a wooden knob for the heel. The metal stem is covered with gathered satin. The tobacco tins evoke a past era. Remember Town Talk Mild Tobacco? Talisman Ready Rubbed Fine Cut Tobacco? Players Navy Cut Cigarettes? The cabinet also contains a tin of Bell’s Wax Vestas; wax matches that could be struck on any surface. Channel 7’s Great South East The Great South East team visited Bankfoot House recently as part of episode featuring the heritage of the Glasshouse Mountains. Laurel Edwards and the team were given a guided tour of the house by President, Ron Gillinder. Be sure to watch the Channel 7 screening expected on Sunday, August 18. For further information contact Friends of Bankfoot House, Phone 5493 0197, Email friends@bankfoothouse.org. Ron Gillinder – President – 0407 760 989, in conjunction with the Sunshine Coast Council.

Travelling Tales
with Gwen Malcolm and Carol Daley Recently Gwen Malcolm and Carol Daley took a 16 day Trafalgar tour of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland finishing up with four days in Cambridge to recover. On their return, GCNews put a few questions to them and this is how they responded... What were the favourite places on your trip? Gwen said: it is so hard to Westminster Abbey choose from all the wonderful places we have seen, but like Carol I loved the Scottish highlands and the day we crossed the border into Scotland. The sun shone and the piper played for us – a great atmosphere. We were amazed at the age of historical sites like the World Heritage listed Hadrian’s Wall on the Scottish border and the lovely Georgian architecture of the city Hadrian’s Wall of Bath with the baths built in Roman times. It was awe inspiring walking through Westminster Abbey absorbing the history and culture of a place that is almost familiar. Carol said: I loved the countryside with the dry stone walls and the hedgerows, and green as far as the eye can see, and also the landscape dotted Bridge in Dublin - represents an with the ruins of ancient stone Irish harp, a national symbol of the buildings from small dwellings to Republic of Ireland castles and cathedrals. The landscape changes when you cross the border into Scotland, more hills and mountains, rocky and rugged, with a beauty and colour all of their own, the highlands really were one of the highlights of the trip. Then the Cornish coast, especially St Ives, with its narrow winding streets and the beach when the tide goes out and all the boats are sitting on the sand. Another beautiful coastline is The Ring of Kerry in Ireland, again very rocky and rugged, and the rest of the countryside is very lush and green. Other standouts of the trip were Westminster Abbey and Ely Cathedral, in fact everywhere we went the history and architecture was amazing. Any other highlights about the trip? We enjoyed culinary delights such as the English fish and chips, Cornish pasties, clotted cream with Devonshire teas but drew the line at haggis! We had a great time, cold at times but the last few days were brilliant sunshine so it was not much fun coming home to rain. Any advice to other travellers? A tour gives you a great overall snapshot of the country in a short time if you are limited. We did 16 days which was just right – any longer would have been too long on a bus. The pace was comfortable with only a couple of early starts. Gwen Malcolm of Glass House Mountains always likes to have a Glasshouse Country News with her to keep up with what is going on locally. Gwen (right) is seen here with Carol Daley a long-time friend and fellow GMAN member at Stonehenge in England

Windows 8 update
It was there a second ago!
We have talked about Windows 8 previously, and though for most desktop and laptop users it still seems quite ‘user-unfriendly’, it isn’t going away so we need to sit up and take notice! Some users prefer Windows 8, and it does have some good features and performance pros. Update: There is good news for users who have persisted with Windows 8. Windows 8 update is coming, later in 2013, with quite a few changes following customer feedback! The update will be free and downloadable as 8.1 (formerly known as Windows Blue). So what can we expect from the upgrade? The Start Button is back! I can only imagine how many users screamed for that, though W8 will still default to the start screen rather than the desktop (a boot to desktop option has been hinted at…). The interface between desktop and the ‘start-up metro screen’ will be smoother too. Performance enhancements are expected: better support for working two windows side by side; multi-monitor support for multi taskers working on more than one screen; and better interface with mouse and keyboard for those of us working on desktop and laptop non-touch screens. With 8.1 comes Internet Explorer 11. Internet Explorer remains world-wide the most popular browser because it is the Windows default, but there is good competition from the likes of Firefox and Google Chrome. Caution: If you’re considering upgrading to Windows 8, we say be cautious, the upgrade process can be tricky and can fall in a heap. If you really want Windows 8, we suggest a ‘clean’ install rather than an upgrade. Final Tip: If there are folk out there who want a new PC but not Windows 8, we can still provide new PC’s with Windows 7. For a list of time saving Windows 8 Shortcuts, check on our website www.mooloolahpc.com.au
Even as a very regular user of social media, particularly Facebook, it can be very frustrating trying to keep up with the seemingly endless string of new developments and functionality. It’s not uncommon that I’ll give a quick tip to a client “Just click the icon in the top right corner” and by the time they get around to it (usually the next day) that same option has now been moved to the bottom left corner, or hidden behind some other menu option. Of course, there is a reason behind the constant changes - in such a fiercely developing industry, all players need to stay on top of the game so as not to be outshone and out-evolved by their competitors. But even understanding this, why is it that sometimes you can be sitting next to someone else, each of you logged into Facebook at the same time, and yet each with different looking pages - as though you are each using a different version when in fact you’re on the exact same site? Interestingly, this random-style rollout is generally by design. Facebook tends to roll changes out either to a specifically selected group of users (for example Queenslanders aged 30 - 40) or else to a random sample of the user population, in order to gain feedback from a smaller scale group before pushing out to all users. You may even be a part of this process right now! If you happen to notice a section at the lower-right of your Facebook page which allows you to rate locations on a 1-star to 5-star scale, then you may just be part of their latest random sampling. For this particular function, using a random sample is important because they are after true ratings, rather than running the risk of having businesses pay individuals for bulk votes.

JULY 10 2013
In recent weeks I have experienced a very positive outlook from the Beerwah business community. The pending Beerwah Market Place expansion being approved by council, the knowledge of this capital injection into the community may have been the trigger. The period of not knowing has moved one more step towards the project commencing. The next step will be the starting date and the excitement of the Beerwah CBD having an injection of new life. As the president of the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce I have been working with a number of groups (local, state and interstate) to attract clients to Glasshouse Country and Beerwah. We need to boost the customer numbers through the doors of local businesses. Glasshouse Country has many untapped assets which can be promoted across the country and internationally. This time last year when the first group of Kiwi’s arrived by air on the Sunshine Coast it was reported the highest number of international visitors attended the Glass House Mountains Visitor Information Centre ever in one week (mainly from New Zealand). The state government wishes to promote the sustainable use of our National Parks of which we have five, unfortunately accommodation is not all that plentiful for those who need to rent a bed and a room, although what we have is of excellent quality. The provision of additional facilities will require a significant injection of capital. Did you know that there is over 80,000 mobile accommodation units driving around Australia every day, a large percentage of these are self-contained and have a ‘Leave No Trace’ certification. When they leave, each of these units will leave nothing except the $100.00 cash they used to purchase fuel, food and a cup of coffee each day they stay in our community. The best thing they can take away is the memory of a friendly community, and you know what? They will tell their travelling friends. All the Glasshouse Country Communities need to do is provide a safe location for the travellers to pull on the hand brake at a Rest Stop and have a chat with their travelling mates and tell how friendly you have been. Your communities have the full range of support services for these travellers, upholsterers, gas sales, tyre sales and service, generator repairs, auto electrical, caravan repairs and super markets to top up their food and drink supplies, plus more. What can you do now? Establish Rest Stops on private properties either adjacent to existing facilities within the townships were travellers can support local business. Establish Rest Stops on private rural land adjacent to national parks where travellers can walk to so they can experience what we have on offer in Glasshouse Country. The challenge is yours. Put up some signs, put on a smile and invite the RV Traveller into your business and your community, become known as an RV Friendly Destination and the harvest will be yours.

Human kindness
I had stuff to do in Beerwah then caught the bus back to Glass House at 1.12pm. When toddling over the bridge I noticed the chariot (my electric wheelchair) was a bit slow. The bars of charge showed it was down to 1 1/2 with a warning sign. So along I trundled worrying about this, as it’s never happened before. I stopped in at GCNews and asked if Lea could please ring a taxi for me. The taxi couldn't pick me up until 3.00pm so I thought I'd take my chances. Lea took my home number and said she'd call in 15 minutes to make sure I got home okay. The wheelchair went slower and slower and slower until just after the primary school I knew it wasn't going to get me home. I stopped where a tree was partially shading the footpath and settled in for the duration. A lovely couple stopped and I asked them to go back to GCNews and ask them to call the taxi again. A mother and daughter living nearby came to offer help and the daughter, Tayler made me the best cup of tea ever and mum talked to the many cars that had stopped to offer help in one direction while I spoke to the others. Lea and Brownie came back with a bottle of water, the taxi arrived, Brownie pushed the wheelchair into the taxi, Lea and Brownie met me at home to open the door and let the dog off the chain. What an awesome place to live! Thank you so much to all who offered to help, especially Tayler for that awesome cuppa, mum for the traffic control and Lea and Brownie. While the taxi did pick me up eventually (and Steve and Sharon have been great) there has been more than 10 times they’ve been unable to pick me up. Isn't it time we had more than one taxi for such a huge, and growing, area? I'm kind of stubborn, as my ex will agree, and think it's a sign of weakness to ask for help. But I would like to get the money together to buy a wheelchair-accessible vehicle. I would be very grateful for any ideas or help to raise the money for such a vehicle. Last week I had an appointment in Maroochydore which meant catching the 10.42am train and then not getting home until 7.00pm. Later that week was an appointment in Kawana, so a 8.13am train, then getting home at around 7.00pm. Fatigue is a major problem for those of us with MS so such days mean that nothing else is possible, then there's a recovery day. Appointments like this would only take 1 1/2 hours out of a day in my last life. Hydrotherapy needn't be quite as tiring without these huge journeys. Sharon Chamberlain Glass House Mountains
Just obey the rules
A couple of weeks ago one of your correspondents complained of his 84-year-old father getting a speeding fine. He had apparently driven from Steve Irwin Way and across the roundabout on his way to Peachester Road where he was booked. The complaint was that he didn't see the 60K sign after the roundabout. As he was in a 60K zone when he left Steve Irwin Way if
he didn't see any other sign he should have still been observing the 60K speed limit. In fact, if there were no speed signs at all, the speed limit would have been 50K. Regardless of age we are all obliged to be aware of and comply with speed limits. Your second correspondent, name not published, claims that police are engaging in ‘shameless revenue raising’ instead of patrolling various areas to stem minor crime. The local police obviously have limited resources and they would have a need to prioritise the time that they have available. I see atrocious driving as well as blatant, dangerous disregard of road rules almost every day. Double lines in particular seem to have no meaning to many drivers. So while local patrols could stop some minor crime, police presence on the roads could save lives and that seems infinitely more important to me. If drivers obeyed the speed limits and all other road rules there would be no scope for your so called ‘shameless revenue raising’ and the roads would be a safer place for us all. Damian Petrie Mount Mellum
Sincere thanks
As people are probably aware from July 25 I will be taking six weeks medical leave from my role as Minister for Energy and Water Supply and Member for Caloundra. I’d like to sincerely thank the many people who contacted me offering their best wishes following my personal announcement last Thursday. My wife Judy and I appreciate all of the support that has been offered over the past few days. There has been an outpouring of kind words and I will not forget the kindness shown from those around the region. I am extremely thankful for the support from all of my colleagues and local LNP branch members during the past few months and I am looking forward to continuing the positive work in the wonderful electorate of Caloundra upon my return. MARK Mcardle MP Member for Caloundra

Maybe we need something big?
We have recently returned from a three week trip driving through NSW, and Victoria to South Australia. Since returning we have been reading in GCNews of the money to be spent on '...the design and construction of the Beerwah business area.' This will be great for the residents but the businesses will also need the injection of tourist money. We stopped mostly in cabins on our trip and, at each town where we stopped, our first visit was to the Information Centre (which conveniently also held toilets). If there were enough places of interest we booked in for two, or sometimes three nights. Unfortunately Beerwah doesn’t have any tourist draw-card, and I am not overlooking Australia Zoo. It can be visited without coming into the township. As well as the mountains, Glass House has the Visitors Centre, and Landsborough the Museum. Beerwah doesn’t even have toilets as a draw-card as they can be found at Peachester, Landsborough or Glass House Mountains on the way. If only we could interest an entrepreneur to come up with something – BIG? to bring them in. Pam Innes Beerwah
Sign of the times
Spin on waste charges
I was very interested to read the council spin about waste charges. What they have conveniently omitted is that to take a small trailer load of green waste to the tip it now costs $15.00 instead of the already overpriced $8.00. Of course, if you live on a small suburban block and have no garden it will not affect you. As most of us here live on larger lots, and have shrubs, trees etc. to prune we will be the ones most affected by the extreme rise in price (almost double). There was a time when we were told that the last increase in the cost to $8.00 was because of a State Environment Levy. The Newman Government abolished that levy and we did not get a reduction in price. I think that we are being overcharged. By the way, if you take a half load

Laser Express was one of the pioneers of a Medical Grade Mobile service for reputable salons throughout Australia. Janine Tracey, founder of Laser Express, was frustrated with an unmonitored industry in this country and wanted to provide a safe and effective service for Australian Salon owners. Her research took her to America where she met with the Palomar Executives and became an Australian Trainer and Distributor. Laser Express has now been providing this service to Salons throughout Australia for over 10 years, without incident. Lucie Blanchetova is the Queensland State Manager and Trainer who operates in over 20 salons throughout South East Queensland and Tobi Farthing is the Central Queensland Area Manager. Environment Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network Corymbia torreliana a Weed Species from the north We may wonder why Corymbia torreliana or Cadaghi often comes up in strange places. An attractive tree with pinkish new growth, and at times a lovely green trunk, this species used to be called Eucalyptus torreliana. While the seed could be dispersed by wind, they are often found where no other tree exists. These trees were once planted as windbreaks or street trees in southern Queensland, as they grow exceptionally fast. However they are a north Queensland tree and around this area are now regarded as a weed. They are often covered in black sooty mould at certain times of the year making them extremely unsightly. One of the reasons for their spread appears to be native stingless bees. They are attracted to the trees for the pollen and nectar. When the seed capsules are produced they exude a sticky resin which is unfortunately also attractive to the bees. They then carry the seeds and resin to the hive dispersing seed along the way. The seed and resin also become attached to the small hive entrance often entirely blocking it and resulting in the death of the hive. Native bee keepers regard this species as one of the biggest threats to their hives, so if you have one on your property please consider removing it. Native bees need all the help they can get to ensure survival.

Mary Cairncross update Contributed by Bob Taylor When you visit the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve and want to access the walking tracks you are encouraged to make a ‘gold’ coin donation, and the volunteers on duty are sometimes asked what the donations are used for. Here are some examples of what they fund. We have approximately 80 volunteers (if you’re interested in becoming one – phone 5429 6122) who attend monthly training meetings conducted by expert guest presenters with a background in rainforest conservation. Volunteers are also recognised with small gestures such as ‘thank you’ events and field excursions to other environmental centres in the region. In conjunction with tertiary organisations, in particular the University of the Sunshine Coast (SCU), we conduct research and monitoring of the health of the Reserve. Environment and Community events and conservation projects are conducted throughout the year. We hire educative displays from SCU and Qld Museum and have framed beautiful bird photographs, all promoting the Reserve’s objectives. One project in particular was the Richmond Birdwing butterfly vine planting and signage. The butterfly is classified as vulnerable in Qld, and the vines planted some years ago are now successfully producing butterflies; with regular sightings in the picnic area. In recent years we have funded Good Neighbour Days, Threatened Species and 70th Anniversary Celebration events. And lastly, the immediate return for your small donation is a first rate nature experience in our majestic rainforest, where if you take your time, you will be rewarded with sightings of some of the wildlife who make the Reserve their home.

Be ‘magpie-smart’ during breeding season Magpies will soon be patrolling their territory, but a few simple actions could help people avoid or minimise the chances of injury from aggressive birds. Environment and Heritage Protection Department Wildlife Management Director Rebecca Williams said it was important to be ‘magpie-smart’ during the breeding season. “Not all magpies swoop but when they do it can be frightening if you’re not prepared,” Ms Williams said. “Most swooping is by the male magpie and almost entirely in the immediate area around the nest tree. “The behaviour peaks from August to October but can occur anytime during the magpie breeding season which lasts from July until December. “If you can’t avoid the area, it’s best to move through it quickly, but don’t run. Cyclists should dismount and walk through the territory to avoid the risk of injury from a fall or collision. “There are some simple steps you can take to reduce the risk of an attack and one of the most popular for cyclists in recent years has been the ‘space helmet’ look. “Attach some large plastic cable ties of any colour to your bike helmet so they stick up like antennae and aggressive magpies will be more likely to leave you in peace.” Ms Williams said walkers had found carrying an umbrella or wearing a hat and sunglasses were also useful in deterring magpie attacks. “Mums and dads should make sure their children are magpie-smart when going outdoors,” she said. “Explain that the male magpie’s aim is to drive perceived intruders away from the nest, not to cause injury. The swooping nearly always stops once you leave the area. “Remember that birds that swoop will only do so for about six to eight weeks of the year.” EHP does not remove magpies, but in some situations local licensed contractors will perform this service. More information on magpies is available at www.ehp.qld.gov.au. JULY 10 2013 |

Happenings Beauty of nature - art exhibition
Things 2 Do Laura O’Connell offers a hands-on workshop at the Beerwah Library on July 24, from 2.00pm - 3.30pm. Workshop participants will be involved in practical exercises to learn how to let go of everyday problems that crowd their minds and shut out creativity. Emphasis is aimed at understanding the creative process, using life experiences to enrich your writing and tapping into your individual uniqueness. You will leave the session inspired with ideas you can apply to your own projects.
Kathleen O’Keefe of Beerwah will be the guest artist at Flower and Art Hanasho with some 50 oil works on canvas with images showing the beauty of nature. The artist is boundlessly enthusiastic about flowers and the love of the process, so violets, orchid, sunflowers, poppy’s, iris, peony, bamboo’s and many other flowering plants emerge from the creative process. The art collection is focused on Kathleen’s passion for beauty and the diversity of nature, featuring plants and flowers in various sizes and colours. You and your art loving friends are invited to the opening night to celebrate with wine and a light supper hosted from 6.30pm to 8.30pm on Thursday, July 11, at 5/235 Boundary Street West End 3844 2777.

Brendan Edwards Glasshouse Community Church I'm writing this article using my thumbs on an iPhone away from home at my parents property an hour north of Glasshouse, where they choose to rent out their house to my brother, live in a shed, use a fire under a drum for hot water outside and a different fire in another drum as a heater/cooker inside the shed! It sounds like a bit of a hillbilly set up I know- because it is! But my kids and I love it. (My wife takes longer to convince!). There's no better place for us to come to get back to the simple things in life. It's really concerning me and others I speak to all the time, about what life will be like for our children and theirs. Things are so different now for us than they were for my parents to raise kids and things are getting weirder all too rapidly. Technology makes life easier but seems to be making us dumber at the same time. I bet my kids won't need to know how to reverse park a car or how to write a letter and post it because we don't have to do those things much anymore already. I wonder what work options will be for our kids when heaps of small businesses are already on the endangered list because people would

rather pay a third for something imported, online and sent to your door, than buy anything from a counter down the street where you can interact with an actual person. It seems a bit of a losing battle but I see our mission as to try and keep our community, just that, a community where we work together, know each other's names, sharing life in a simple way, as friends (not the virtual Facebook kind either!) In Matthew 6:33, Jesus says to seek first the kingdom of God and being right with Him and all the other things will work out after that (my translation). If we can do that and take time out to teach our children to do that, I think most of our concerns for our future will be replaced by His peace. And that's definitely what we all need more of. Bless you, see you in church, turn off the tv/ computer this week and spend some time with God instead.

New signage
Improved directional signage has been installed in Glass House Mountains so that first time visitors to town will more easily find key places like the shopping precinct, the railway station and the info centre. The approach is to encourage tourists and travellers to stop and look more closely at what’s on offer in this lovely hinterland town and surrounding area.
Dularcha Circuit
Council has finished constructing a new section on the Rose Road and Tunnel Ridge Road sections of the Dularcha Circuit. The majority of the 20.8km circuit consists of existing SeqWater trails and National Parks trails and is a fantastic place for walkers and cyclists as it traverses stunning natural areas that you don’t otherwise get to enjoy. If you’re looking for a new experience and you’re fit enough, make sure the Dularcha Circuit is on your list of trails to explore.
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Beerwah Resource Recovery Centre on Roberts Road accepts unwanted e-waste; televisions, computers and computer products, free of charge, seven days a week. The electronic waste program has been operating since February and in that time, an incredible 400 tons of material has been diverted from landfill to recycling. I’m a huge advocate for the principles of reducing, reusing and recycling. Here’s a recycling tip that you might be interested in – don’t put recyclable material into plastic bags as it’s too hard to open, so will end up in landfill and won’t get recycled.
Jenny McKay
Division 5 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council M: 0409 450 726 Tourism and the hinterland
There’s an impressive tourism drive underway that has your local Sunshine Coast representatives including myself, Cr Rick Baberowski and Cr Greg Rogerson; local State MP’s Andrew Powell, Peter Wellington and David Gibson; and Julie Walker from Gympie Council working together with Sunshine Coast Destinations Ltd to address tourism between Glass House Mountains and Gympie. It’s a long stretch of hinterland magic that far too many tourists simply aren’t aware of and our aim is to bring more of the ‘drive market’ into the hinterland. There’s work to be done on the roads connecting the hinterland towns and our state counterparts will be following up in this regard. There’s also work to be done on signage and that’s what we local representatives will be taking care of. Expect to hear more about is being done to improve and promote this stunning part of the world.
The drive tourists
Media representatives from the Queensland Chinese News are visiting the Sunshine Coast to familiarise themselves with the attractions of the area. What they see and experience on the Coast will be reported in their newspaper that’s printed in Chinese and distributed in Brisbane. This region will be placing ads in the paper in order to encourage more ‘drive tourists’ from Brisbane to come spend a night or two on the Sunshine Coast. I’ll be part of the hosting party as we take the journalists to Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve, on a walk through Montville village, to Rick’s Garage at Palmwoods and a stop at the Ettamogah Pub and the Ginger and Nut Factory at Yandina.
Palmwoods Sports Complex
Construction is about to start on new field lighting at Palmwoods Sports Complex. The project involves installation of field lighting to the western playing field areas which is great news for night practice and night games. www.gcnews.com.au

Over many years it was used as a feature tree in many country towns across Queensland, and as a result there are some fine examples to be seen in towns like Toowoomba, Dalby and even further west at Charleville. Sadly, their popularity waned in the 70’s and 80’s when new exotic trees from exotic lands were all the rage. However, more recently the humble Bottle Tree has once again found its niche in the landscaping of our towns and cities – mainly due to its drought-hardy nature. The Bottle Tree is a great specimen in any sized backyard, as it is slow growing and stays under control as a small tree with compact branches. It takes about eight years for the trunk to start swelling into the bottle shape. But once it swells, you’ll have a neighbourhood talking for years to come.
A prickly situation
It’s time to get serious with every barefoot kids nightmare – bindii (or bindi-eye) This ferny leaved turf weed is in full growth now and by dealing with it soon, you’ll have a prickle and pain free lawn for spring. If you have small amounts (or large amounts and lots of spare time) you can easily hand weed the grass. But if it’s wall to wall bindii, then you may need to consider getting a helping hand by using one of the specially designed bindii sprays suited to your type of turf grass. Any of the branded versions will do the job – as long as you follow some simple rules. 1. Don’t spray within three days of mowing 2. Don’t spray if it’s going to rain within six hours 3. Don’t spray until the heavy dew has evaporated 4. Don’t mix it any stronger than the label says 5. Don’t add detergent or washing liquid 6. Keep your kids and your pets off the grass for six hours Happy bindii hunting.

Enjoy a peaceful rural precinct on a no through road. A very pretty and thoroughly liveable property – ticks all the boxes. Home has character with bay windows to lounge and dining. Real brick fireplace for cosy warmth and a large undercover entertaining area at the rear. Detached studio is a very handy 4th bedroom or office and has a shower and toilet. Inground pool in a private garden setting. Two sheds, one with 3 bays and power, and the other a double bay. Plus a very large level grassed area – brilliant for kids or parking vehicles, or space for a massive shed. And from the rear of the property there are lovely views across the paddocks to Mt Tibrogargon. Really handy location between the two highways, allowing easy commuting choices to Caloundra and the Coast or Brisbane. A must to inspect.

Contributed by Jenny Kelly Even though the track was pretty wet, we still had 39 players compete in a Bisque Bogey for a trophy kindly donated by Marie Norton. Our winner on the day was Margaret Zonca with a great score of + 4. Margaret was followed by Runner up Deb
Rutherford on +3. NTP's went to Sonia Kenway on 2, Leith Barnes on 5, Heather Henn on 16 and Mavis Brimelow took out the 18th. The ball rundown went to +1. Let's hope this lovely weather holds out and we can get in some quality golf time. Take care and good golfing.

Landsborough Tennis Club Sign On Contributed by Kerry Roach Welcome back to our Friday Junior Tennis Competition. Our next Spring Season will kick off in early August. Sign on and grading will take place on Friday, July 12, from 4.00pm – 5.30pm at the Landsborough Tennis Courts. Come on down and sign up. The courts will be open to practice your tennis and a free sausage sizzle will also be available. Season registration fees due on commencement of the season. If you would like to play and cannot make it to the sign on please give Katya a call on 0417 625 194.
Super Strawberry 2013 Round 1
Winner – Paradise Fruits weighing in at 130grams The 2013 Super Strawberry Competition started off slowly, with only one entry in Round 1. However, after hearing that there would probably be no entries – too much rain, fruit too small – we were pleased to see former champion Paradise Fruits (winners 2000, 2005, 2007 and 2011) with an entry weighing 130 grams. The annual Super Strawberry Competition runs for eight weeks leading up to the Beerwah Charity Sports & Spring Carnival. Each weekly winner receives a six-pack from Beerwah Hotel, and the 2013 Champion will enjoy a dinner for two, also donated by Beerwah Hotel. Round 2 will close at 4.00pm next Friday, July 12. Entries can be presented during the week at Coochin Creek Fruitgrowers Co-operative for weighing and recording. Please ask for David or Helen. Thanks to the Co-op and Beerwah Hotel for their support again this year. The Charity Sports & Spring Carnival will be held on Saturday, August 24 at the Beerwah Sports Ground. All proceeds to Cancer Council Queensland as in previous years.

SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 Take time this week to process your feelings as it will benefit your long term goals. Make no move to put new energies out there under Mercury retrograde. Saturn is now going direct in your sign. Perhaps this will in the next week ease some of your resistance to advancement. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 The moody New Moon in Cancer this week brings an emotional energy to all issues of financial sharing. Unpredictable events could cause sudden shifts in how your partner feels. You may get a second chance at discussing issues of sharing intimacy. Avoid forceful opinions now. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 This New Moon week in the sign of Cancer, is opposite your natal Sun sign. It focuses attention on your partner, either private or business. Your thoughts under Mercury retrograde finds you taking a deeper look to commit to a partnership. It’s a good idea to stop and re-evaluate. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 You are off to a rattling new challenge, perhaps swift and sudden changes in any work or health routines. Saturn moves direct in your business zone and focuses on your objectives. Mercury retrograde involves previous decisions and discussions from different perspectives.
PISCES February 20 – March 20 The New Moon in your associate sign of Cancer, brings a creative opportunity. Your heart now needs love in a sensitive, caring, nostalgic or homey touch. Circumstances surrounding you can now satisfy that. Faith and inspiration will be anchored by Saturn moving direct now. ARIES March 21 – April 20 This is the New Moon week. It could herald an emotional turning point for you. Hopefully it will supply you with some grounding for your need for stability and security, those to whom you share your life. Having been near breaking point, the planets now bring you a happy change. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 Venus moves with progressive Uranus in your chart, pushing for immediate gratification. The question now is ‘what is it that you really need?’ It’s a very strange time as retrograde Mercury moves backward into the sentimental Cancer / New Moon sign. Go with your strongest feelings. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 This week is a financial New Moon advising you to reorganise your debt and credit accounts. See if you can pull your expenses under control. Start work on creating daily healthy habits. Mercury retrograde in Cancer increases your awareness of selfworth. Check your partner’s expenses.

CANCER June 22 – July 22 This is a very vulnerable week for your sign. Mercury retrograde has a self-locking procedure causing delays and mixed messages. Far better that you withdraw into the security of your emotional shell and concentrate on making bread and butter puddings! Choose battles with care. LEO July 23 – August 22 It’s hard to know who you can trust this week under a high-powered emotional New Moon. Get ready for a quick turnaround when Venus joins up with exciting Uranus so pleasure comes from unexpectedly delightful connections. Saturn sticks you with home duty responsibilities. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 Venus and Uranus move in an unexpected fox-trot together, bringing unusual pleasures with money and relationships to tempt you. It may be exciting to be free to express your secret desires. There is a strong influence on your social life. Bringing into your home delightful visitors. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 This New Moon in the middle of Cancer’s sign is normally timid, but it is calling you into action in the public sector of your life. There is a force building now for a major career transformation. Probably with Mercury retrograde there is now an urgent crisis. Mars also stirs the pot.

kiss. After she's finished, the biker says, "wow! That was the best kiss I've ever had! That's a real talent you are wasting. You could be famous. Why in the world would you want to do what you’re doing?" "My parents don't like me dressing up like a girl.” The authorities think she may have been pushed. P. Teirney, Beerwah

ACROSS
A tough looking group of bikers were riding when they saw a woman about to jump off a bridge, so they stopped. The leader, a big burly man, gets off his bike and says, "what are you doing?" "I'm going to jump," she says. While he didn't want to appear insensitive, he didn't want to miss an opportunity either, so he asked... "Well, before you jump, why don't you give me a kiss?" So she does... and it was a long, deep, lingering
