AUGUST 10 2016
Hi Everyone
W
ell I have to say I am not really a follower of sport, in particular the Olympics, but the Medal Tally and the highlights are hard not to follow with all the media attention they receive. However, after seeing a television interview with Mapleton’s Ryan Tyack, who was part of the three-man team who took out the bronze in the Men’s Archery, my interest has grown significantly. Knowing that someone who lives just up the range contributed much to the team’s win in taking out Australia’s first medal definitely makes you feel good. However, what I really loved was how calm and level headed he and his team mates were when they were being interviewed and when Ryan had the opportunity, how he praised the efforts and sacrifices that his mum had made, to get him to Rio. I imagine it must have been both an exciting and rewarding moment for Ryan and his mum Lynette when he received his medal. A big thumbs up to you both for your hard work and allowing us to feel a little bit more connected to this international event. Regards,

Local News National Tree Day Native tree and Birdwing Butterfly vine planting, as well as a Celebration of Indigenous Culture, left Peachester State School students enriched on School Tree Planting Day 2016. The school has one dedicated lady to thank for a very important and very beautiful school project. For the last four years Mrs Dorothy Robb has with great passion, enlisted the help of many students, organisations and parents to create the jewel of the school – The school’s Indigenous Forest Walk and Richmond Birdwing Butterfly vine project. During this time, over 600 native trees and 185 vines have been planted along a bush trail which now spans 385 metres and leads to a beautiful outdoor classroom and an upcoming butterfly house. In celebration of School’s Tree Planting Day on Friday, July 22 every student at the school added another native shrub or tree to the trail. Each tree is staked, and written on each stake is the common and scientific name of the tree, its indigenous use and the child who planted it. Each student at the school has their own tree for each year they have been at the school, which they are responsible for nurturing. Additionally this year, every student planted a butterfly vine. This year’s vines were grown from seed, by students, as part of the 2015 Science curriculum.

Students celebrated their tree planting efforts, in the outdoor classroom Mrs Robb co-ordinates the school’s Enviro-Club and says this is the major energy behind the project. During two lunch breaks per week the students nurture the trees, butterfly vines and seedlings through watering, weeding, mulching maintaining the track and enjoying their Forest Walk. “This also gives the students the opportunity to work as a team with older and younger students and plant the passion for nature,” she said. Also behind the project is the wonderful help of organisations and businesses in the community such as Mooloolah River Water Watch and Landcare Inc at Mooloolah Native Nursery, Peachester Sawmill, Coochin Creek Co-op, Bassett Barks Pty Ltd, Beerwah Recycling Centre, Brush Turkey enterprises, and Verterra Pty Ltd. Parent and community members have often helped out and are always welcome to contribute to this community project.

It’s 10 years since the Glass House Mountains were placed on the National Heritage Listing as a landscape of national significance. To mark this significant achievement, dedicated local tourism ambassador Ivon Northage organised a formal ceremony at the Glass House Mountains lookout which included the unveiling of a plaque. The original announcement was made at the lookout by the then Prime Minister John Howard and while the recent event did not have our current PM in attendance, we did have the three levels of government represented. With the new member for Fisher – Andrew Wallace, the member for Glass House – Andrew Powell and the local Councillor – Rick Baberowski all speaking of the importance of the National Heritage Listing of the area. However, the real VIP guest of the day was Glass House Mountains local Beth Hodge, who along with some assistance from her husband Peter, compiled the application and submitted it for consideration. Beth explained that originally she had become aware of a number of Peregrine Falcons who were nesting in the area, and with the ever increasing helicopter traffic – both training and tourism – she became concerned about the bird’s safety. “I wasn’t particularly surprised to find that the falcons, and indeed the whole ecosystem were not afforded any particular protection on their own, but was stunned to discover the mountains
Ivon Northage, with Brent Hampstead representing the Minister for National Parks and Senior Ranger Nat Smith from NPWS themselves were offered no special protection under either State or National legislation,” she said. “I realised that if I was successful in getting the area National Heritage Listing then it would provide protection under the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act.” For the application to be successful there were a number of criteria that were considered, including the place must have outstanding heritage value to the nation, confirming that the Glass House Mountains are the best example in Australia of an exposed sub-volcanic landform. The research also provided an improved understanding of the tectonic plate movement and it also concluded that the Glass House Mountains have strong alethic characteristics and value to the broader community both as a powerful landscape and as a defining image.

Heritage Listing By Lea Parkes Member for Glass House Andrew Powell said it was wonderful to not only recognise 10 years since the Glass House Mountains were entered on to the National Heritage register but, equally important, acknowledge the efforts of two fantastic locals who were and are integral in their nomination for the listing and their management since – Beth Hodge and Ivon Northage. “We have a responsibility to continue to manage these heritage listed mountains and I’m keen to work with Beth and Ivon, and with all tiers of government, to protect and promote this stunning landscape that we call home,” he said. Councillor Baberowski spoke of his passion for
Beth submitted the application in January 2005, and was then requested to supply additional supporting documentation including maps. In March of that year, a notice appeared in the newspaper that the mountains were being assessed, then she heard nothing for almost a year, until a notice for public comment was published nationally. So when Beth and Peter were invited to attend the announcement that the Glass House Mountains were to be recognised as #32 on the National Heritage list, they were delighted. This was followed up in 2007 with State Heritage Listing being confirmed. Visiting the lookout now 10 years on things feel very much the same, however Beth is pleased to know that the protection of area is guaranteed, helicopter traffic is almost non-existent, and there has been an increase to the area by tourists.

the mountains and his relentless approaches to Visit Sunshine Coast in the importance of the Glass House Mountains being used to promote the area both internationally and within Australia. The Councillor believes that our local area is home to the ‘Best Bumps on the Planet’ and he reckons we should all be letting people know about them, with his approach of “saying it now and saying it often.” “The place was nominated to the national heritage register in 2005 and the listing is at www.environment.gov.au/heritage/places/ national/glass-house-mountains “The Glass House Mountains National Park and Beerburrum Forest Reserve 1 (later added to the national park) were placed on the Queensland Heritage Register in 2007.https://environment.ehp. qld.gov.au/heritage-register/detail/?id=602494

Kyra Quinn who is in charge of the Beerwah Bulldogs first aid said with over 21 teams and 400 members, aged between five and 45, keeping up with the supplies of first aid equipment was a real challenge. She said people don’t always think about how important first aid supplies and equipment are until they or a member of the family sustain an injury. “It can be a really stressful time when a player is injured, particularly a junior player who can have their parents and siblings watching from the side lines, and then you need to stay calm and reassure both the player and their family members,” she said. “It is a huge responsibility for the FAOs who are the first responders on the field, we don’t have x-ray machines or ultra sounds to see what is going on. “So it is our duty to take every precaution to ensure a good outcome for the player, which is why the first aid equipment is so important, it is expensive to purchase and while we need to have it on hand, we would prefer not to have to use it,” Kyra said. Kyra’s equipment ‘wish list’ includes a defibrillation machine costing $2,250.00, three splint kits valued at $395.00, airway intervention kits $450.00, H2O bottles at $130.00, stretchers that are safety compliant $617.00, and five fully stocked field bags x $130.00. So Kyra decided instead of complaining that they could always do with more equipment, she’d come up with a solution that the club would hold
Kyra strapping under 11 player Harrison Mens a community garage sale to raise some much needed funds. Kyra said the NRL states that they must have First Aid Officers (FAO) for each team as well as a Level 2 FAO within the club who is trained to administer advanced CRP and airway intervention. Kyra is the Level 2 FAO. Kyra said all of their FAO are volunteers and they train and work hard in their roles. They just put their heads down and work hard to protect and care about our players to the best of their abilities, she said. Kyra said they are really hoping that the community will come along and support them on the day. Even if you just come along and grab some brunch or lunch, we think you might be surprised at just how good the food in our canteen is, well worth coming along for, she said. We have organised the event for this Sunday, August 14 from 8.00am – 1.00pm at the Beerwah Sports Grounds with sites still available for just a $15.00 booking fee. Kyra reckons she will be happy if the funds raised can assist the club in purchasing a splint kit. For more information on site bookings please contact Kyra on 5439 0552 or 0419 020 601.

Topfer takes out international title By Ashleigh Dwan A 19-year-old Glass House local, Josh Topfer was thrown into the 20th annual ‘World Championships of Performing Arts’ (WCOPA) and won, claiming the title of Grand Champion Senior Male Model of the World. “When I won the award I was just shaking, I didn’t know what to do,” said Josh on his spectacular global win. Having auditioned for the Annie Warbucks musical at Goodwin Performing Arts on the Sunshine Coast, Associate Director and Licensed Talent Scout Alison Goodwin spoke about the possibility of him travelling to California to compete in the invitational-only event. Josh, who had no prior modelling experience, saved hard through his work at his parent’s business - Matildas fruit shop and travelled the 13 hours by himself to compete in what is known as the ‘talent Olympics’. After a week of celebrating the fourth of July holiday with fireworks off the Queen Mary, and displaying the ultimate patriotism at the competitions opening ceremony, Josh experienced a full day of the Worldstars Bootcamp. This workshop gave him an insight into the modelling world as renowned experts gave each competitor comprehensive entertainment educational training. The WCOPA ran from July 8 – 17 in Long Beach, California with over 40 countries competing in the junior (five -15 years) and senior (16+ years)
BEERWAH DENTURE CLINIC competitions. There was also the opportunity to meet with modelling agencies, known as the ‘go-see’s’. According to Josh everyone had their own business cards, but given the rush to get to America, this was not something he had thought of. “I went to the hotel souvenir store, bought a notepad to the goo-see’s and on each piece of the notepad I wrote my name, email and phone number. “How bogan is that?” Josh said. Three different agents invited Josh to meet with them, which was considered a milestone and massive achievement in the eyes of his competitors. Ultimately, he was awarded with the gold finalist award, three overall awards, five gold medals (for swimwear, casual, formal, photographic and spokesmodel) and an industry award. He also received a trophy and Oleg Cassini designed suit as part of his modelling title. Through this international adventure, Josh met people from across the globe and had the time of his life. It’s now onwards and upwards for him as he’s already made his mark in the modelling industry.

The late Jim Hall of Beerwah was well known for his ingenuity and remarkable output as an artist with timber, specialising in the craft of whittling. Jim was born in Woodford in 1921 and at around 12 years of age his family moved to a farm on Alf’s Pinch Road, Beerwah, where he lived for the rest of his life, spending all his leisure time on his hobby of whittling. Jim recalled that his lifetime hobby of whittling began with a project at Woodford State School in 1929 when he was eight-years-old. His early work was done with an old pocket knife, and later as he needed tools to suit his intricate projects, Jim also designed and made the tools. His smallest chisels were made from needles, and in the explanatory signs with his display in later years, Jim stated that he could make half a dozen tiny saws from one razor blade. He soon discovered that beech was the perfect timber for his needs, and found supplies in the bush and in demolition yards. Gradually as his collection grew, Jim was in demand to display his work at various events, and during the 1990s he calculated that the collection, at that time consisting of about 200 pieces, was the product of 26,000 hours whittling. Some complex individual pieces took up to 700 hours of painstaking work. Jim said that many of his early pieces were whittled by the light of a hurricane lantern, and in the early stages he used sandpaper fig leaves instead of commercial sandpaper.
In his autobiography ‘Whittling: Childhood to Eighty Years’ (2001) Jim explained some important decisions: ‘In the early days although money was very scarce, it was fortunate that I decided not to sell any of my work. I believed that quantity would come before quality if it were for sale. This is a decision I have never regretted. Another decision that I rigidly adhered to was that every piece of whittling undertaken had to be from a single solid piece of wood, a fact which has made my display quite unique.’ The whittling collection has been in storage since Jim passed away in 2010; but now an exhibition encompassing most of his amazing work is on display at Woodford Historical Museum, on loan from Peachester History Committee (PHC). Thanks from both societies to Les Strong (who fortunately had spent a lot of time with Jim in the past) and John Gresham for spending many days setting up the exhibition, checking that the moving parts still worked, and overhauling the electrical fittings (also handmade by Jim from odds and ends). The museum is open 10.00am - 3.00pm (with Historical Society volunteers on hand) each Tuesday and Friday, and on the third Sunday of each month, or by appointment.

A welcoming dinner The Maleny and District Welcome Dinner 2016 will be held at the Maleny Showground Pavilion on Wednesday, September 21. The dinner, which is hosted by the Lions Club of Maleny Blackall Range, Ben Messina and Lion Ralph Ding is now in its 11th year and has welcomed many new people over the years to this ‘special’ place we call home. Over 200 people now attend each year with more than half being newcomers to the area over the past few years. Come along to enjoy a gourmet buffet meal prepared by Tranquil Park Restaurant in a warm and friendly atmosphere, make new friends, learn more about the Maleny and District community and meet local community groups and businesses. A raffle with first prize, a photograph of the Glasshouse Mountains donated by Ben Messina (valued at $845.00), second prize a voucher for Maleny Art Direct (valued at $200.00) from Lindsay Muir and third prize, a voucher for Maleny Art Direct from artist Rachael Fentiman (valued at $50.00), lucky door prize and auction are all part of the evening’s entertainment. All newcomers receive an information pack. Tickets are $35.00 and can be purchased from Maleny Art Direct, 2/30 Maple Street, Maleny and Maleny Optical, Shop 8 Riverside Centre, Maleny. Tickets are limited, so buy early to secure your seat on the night. In previous years tickets have sold well in advance of the event. For further information, please contact John Blyth on 5435 2759 or on line at www.malenyblackallrange.qld.lions.org.au. Ben Messina, whose gallery/shop is in Maple Street Maleny, commented on the photograph he donated for the raffle. “The image is called ‘Flight over the Glasshouse Mountains’, captured two days after the June 2016 rain event. I have wanted to capture the waterfall that runs down Mount Beerwah for a long time. “The waterfall usually flows for a short time after rain. With the volume of water that came down I was able to capture it from the air just as the sun was beaming through a small gap in the clouds. The aerial perspective gives a view of the Glasshouse Mountains that’s rarely seen.”

Let’s talk tourism
Maleny Self Storage open for business! Last Thursday morning Maleny local Shane Katsaras welcomed some special guests including local member, Andrew Powell to the official opening of his new business, Maleny Self Storage. Pinning in the code to open the doors to Maleny’s very first elevator, designed to take goods and passengers to the second story units, Andrew commented that, “A facility such as this
is great for the community and shows a level of growth in our region.” Located at 25 Coral Street, Maleny (in behind Maleny Veterinary Services), Maleny Self Storage boasts 95 new storage units with a range of sizes, including the largest at 3 x 6 metres, which can easily store all the furniture from a 3-4 bedroom house. Mission Impossible style video promotes theme park The planned sports theme park on Steve Irwin Way at Glenview is a step closer, with theme park developer, SANAD Capital announcing world renowned Los Angeles based design company Thinkwell Group (Thinkwell) as the lead masterplan consultant. Thinkwell is a multi-award winning entertainment, experience design and production company, responsible for the creation of some of the world’s most renowned destinations, including Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi, MGM Studio City in South Korea, Dubai’s Expo 2020 winning bid and the London 2012 Olympics. “We have always said that this development would be special, but now, with Thinkwell as our partner, we cannot wait to show Australia, and indeed the world, what is about to come to the Sunshine State. Thinkwell is a global leader, a visionary and a trend setter and that’s exactly what this project deserves,” says Bradley P.
Sutherland, CEO of SANAD Capital. The project will consist of a world’s first ‘Wave Reservoir’, a world class water park, extreme water sports facilities, a prestigious action sports training and development centre as well as a four star hotel, an exhibition and conference centre, cafes, restaurants, and international and local retail outlets. Construction is due to commence in 2017. Recently the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce invited members and non-members along to talk tourism across the region. The chamber’s Treasurer Ursula Starkovsky is determined to drive this project to see some actual outcomes and not just what she would consider a ‘talk-fest’. The meeting saw good attendances with nearly 30 people coming along on the night, a combination of people working in tourism businesses and those who would like to see local tourism grow. Ursula said there was clearly some concern with those attending that we have been here before – there have been meetings in the past but collectively there hasn’t been enough momentum to push the project forward. While Ursula realises that she definitely can’t do it alone, she is determined to bring together a ‘Tourism Committee’ to make it happen, and is keen to look at the idea that was suggested by Joan Tucker on the night. This was to work with the Beerwah Celebrates committee to expand their role to incorporate a tourism component as well. Celebrate Beerwah are currently focusing their time on the upcoming ‘Community Expo’ in October, and the Chamber of Commerce is keen to work with the committee to see what potential this idea has. On the night, Committee members from Celebrate Beerwah, Judy Tomlinson, Roger Reilly and Maree Anderson indicated they would definitely be interested in exploring the idea.

Former Chamber President Bob McLean with Paul Lancaster from Suncoast Water Gardens In the last few months, Ursula has also been involved in working with students from the University of the Sunshine Coast with projects that look at tasks that could be done locally, to improve tourism in the short-term. These include ideas such as developing a threeday self-drive tour itinerary. This will do the work of a tour guide but tourists can follow it for themselves. The students’ concept would be that during the three days the program would include Walking opportunities and Adventure seeking activities, followed by a day of relaxing and rejuvenating. There are a range of projects which have all been included on the Chambers website. If you would like to take a look at the ideas check out www.glasshousemountains.com.au If you would like to get involved in a future Tourism Committee, or would like to know more, contact Ursula on ursulaS@gcfn.com.au www.gcnews.com.au

Chappy Sunday
Contributed by Chris Bell The four Glasshouse District School Chaplains paid their annual visit Glasshouse Country Uniting Church last Sunday. Chappy Nikki (Nichole Pulfer, the new Glasshouse Primary School Chaplain) was delegated to speak on behalf of the other chaplains. The congregation was spellbound as Nikki shared her poignant story and how she now cares for kids in three primary schools as their chaplain. The ensuing Q&A time enabled the congregation to ask further questions of the four chaplains and a retiring offering was held to support the work of chaplaincy in our Glasshouse District Schools. The chaplains pictured with Pastor Margaret Niethe are Nikki Pulfer (Glass House State School) Linda Whysall (Landsborough and Beerwah State Schools) Mike Turner (Beerwah High) and Donna Turner (Beerburrum State School). It was a big day for some as the Beerwah High Chappy Fundraising Concert was held at the Baptist church in the afternoon. It was a great afternoon of fun and frivolity with a great variety of acts. Over $1,500.00 was raised for Beerwah High School Chaplain Mike Turner, so thanks to all so much for your support.

Community partnerships at work in Mooloolah
Tim from Year 1 with Jennifer Le Patourel Mooloolah State School has had the enormous honor of being able to accept a huge donation of $1,000 from the local Mooloolah Valley Community Centre. The money has been put towards new reading
books for Years 1 to 4. It was an amazing sight to see the old worn out readers culled and substituted with new and inviting tiles that will encourage reading amongst the students of today. The books will be used at school for reading groups and they will be utilised as home readers also. Some of our students got a sneak peek at the bright new collection when members of the community centre visited the school recently. The children were excited to see the new books and were keen to show off their love of reading by reading some pages to our visitors, Alan O’Callaghan and Jennifer Le Patourel. The Mooloolah Valley Community centre has provided much needed support to Mooloolah State School students again and we are extremely grateful for the wonderful new books! The staff are just as excited as the children, and we would all like to say a big loud ‘Thank You’ from the school community.

Green Park plan debated
For those concerned with the long-term management of the Conondale Memorial Recreation Park at Conondale (better known as Green Park), the Sunshine Coast Council general meeting next Thursday (August 18) will be of particular interest. A report will be presented to Council seeking endorsement of the Conondale Memorial Recreation Park Draft Master Plan 2016 – 2031, for the purposes of public notification and consultation. The park has had a controversial recent history, with the State Government taking the management rights away from community trustees in 2014 and vesting them with the Council. The purpose of the draft Master Plan is to provide a long term vision (15year horizon) for the Park consistent with community demand and the needs of clubs and organisations. The key recommendations of the draft Master Plan include: • the retention of the Sunshine Coast Motorcycle Club as a tenant of the site; • enhanced recreational opportunities (i.e. access, shelter, seating etc.) adjacent to Elaman Creek to support passive community use; • improved community access to the Park and creek area; • improved road access to the site; • inclusion of signage to acknowledge the site’s historical significance; and • improved wayfinding throughout the site. Subject to endorsement at the meeting, the draft Master Plan will then be published for public review and feedback for a period of 21 business days. Feedback received by council within the specified consultation period, will be collated, reviewed and provided to relevant stakeholders for consideration prior to the development of the final Master Plan which will be presented to Council for consideration and endorsement.

Tea by the sea
Contributed by Pauline Clarke Eighteen members from Glass House Country View Club were joined by seven members from Caloundra View Club on Wednesday, August 3 for a morning out at the seaside. We all met at Happy Valley in Caloundra where we took over one of the shelters to spread out our morning tea and many, many cakes which had been brought by the ladies. After morning tea most people took a casual walk along the boardwalk to Kings Beach although there was a few of the more adventurous ones who made it as far as Shelley Beach! On our return to the shelter we had the chance to catch up with each other. It’s always great to meet with the ladies from Caloundra club and compare notes on how each other’s clubs are doing. The next step for a few of us when we visit Caloundra is always to try the fish and chips; we don’t know why, but they always seem to taste better at the seaside. Glass House Country View Club always welcomes new members; just turn up to one of our meetings or outings. View Clubs are a part of the Smith Family. We support Smith Family activities and in the Glass House club we pay particular attention to the ‘Learning for Life’ program.

All happening at Charity Sports
Chamber Orchestra are going places
In what will be a another spectacular appearance at the Beerwah Charity Sports on Saturday, August 20, members of the Maleny Light Horse Troops will be in attendance, to show off their magnificent horses and equipment. The Show & Shine will be running again this year too, so start polishing up the car, the ute, the hot rod or the bike for your entry into the competition. Don’t forget that there are trophies awarded to the winners in 17 different categories and as all entrants will be judged, you’ve got a really good chance of winning one. Just drive into the Sportsground on the day and register there and then. Registration for the competition is only $5.00 per car. All entrants will receive a voucher from Beerwah Discount Tyres for a free wheel alignment valued at $88.00. For all day family fun and entertainment, be at the Beerwah Sportsground on Saturday, August 20 – from 8.30am to 5.00pm. The exciting Chamber Orchestra, ‘Camerata of St John’s’, is coming to the Hinterland and performing in Maleny. Musically they are definitely going places, as they are known as Queensland’s Chamber Orchestra and are currently in residence at the Queensland Performing Arts Complex. Geographically they are going places too as they are touring south-west Queensland, and by invitation, are touring to us. Known for their adventurous programming, Camerata will showcase a collection of their greatest hits, designed to provide regional audiences with an enjoyable afternoon out for the whole family, without needing to travel beyond their own communities. The concert is presented by the Maleny Arts Council as part of their 2016 program. Their performance, ‘Greatest (String) Hits’ will be like a battle of the bands as each section (violin, viola, cello, and double bass) present a piece from their favourite repertoire…of course featuring their own instrument! Camerata’s interactive concert will encourage audience members to vote for their favourite performance of the afternoon, and to even select their own encore from a list including: ‘Monte’s Hungarian Gypsy (Czardas)’, Mozart’s ‘A Little Night Music’, and Leroy Anderson’s ‘Typewriter’ – you may not recognise the names, but you will definitely know the pieces. How often do you applaud as hard as you can, and even stamp your feet for more? Well at this performance you know you will get an encore, and you can choose what you want to hear. Performing without a conductor, Camerata’s players have established a reputation for passionate, exciting performances that engage audiences of all ages, whatever their experience. The concert program will include works by Vivaldi, Piazzolla, Mozart, and Louis Armstrong’s hit, ‘What a Wonderful World’. The performance is at 2.30pm on Sunday, August 28 at the Maleny Community Centre. Tickets are $25.00 for members, $30.00 for adults and $15.00 for students. These are available through the website at www. malenyartscouncil.com or the Visitor Information Centre or by phoning John Marsden on 5494 2584.

LNP Leaders tour Coast MP priority projects
Local MPs came together to continue a tour with LNP leaders looking at the top infrastructure priorities for the Sunshine Coast region, and demonstrating what they are fighting for, to make this region the best it can be. Member for Glass House Andrew Powell has worked alongside his colleagues to show Leader of the Opposition Tim Nicholls and Deputy Leader Deb Frecklington firsthand the projects that each Member was making a priority. “In my own patch of Glass House, we desperately need funding for the North Coast Rail Duplication, not only to keep up with the commuters that use the rail network today, but to accommodate all of those that will demand this service as part of future growth on the Coast. “The LNP took a commitment to the last election of over $500 million to recommence construction of the North Coast rail duplication from Beerburrum to Landsborough. “The Palaszczuk Labor Government said they could build it without raising taxes, cutting services or leasing assets. All we've seen since, is that they lied to the people of Queensland."

into snake-bitten dogs. “We used the latest technologies to make sure that the anti-venom is not only safe and effective, but also a lot cheaper to produce, compared with existing products,” Prof Lovrecz said. With this more effective and lower cost product, more dogs will be able to be saved from deadly snake bites. Once final testing has been completed and the anti-venom has been given approval for sale from the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority, it will be available on the market and stocked by vets around the country.

Australia is home to 10 of the most venomous snakes in the world and thousands of dogs are bitten each year in Australia. The numbers that die is set to reduce significantly thanks to a new anti-venom developed by CSIRO. CSIRO scientists worked with Padula Serums Pty Ltd, a small biotech company in regional Victoria to produce an anti-venom to treat Eastern Brown and Tiger snake bites. Prof George Lovrecz from CSIRO explained that this new product is much more effective that those currently on the market because it is distilled and concentrated to create a pure, fullytested anti-venom which is ready to be injected

Cubs camp at the Zoo
Saturday, July 30 saw 200 Cub Scouts from around our region descend on Australia Zoo for a camp out in the Zoo’s new camping facility to celebrate 100 years of Cub Scouts in Australia. Included in that group were 13 Cub Scouts from the Landsborough troupe. Cub leader, Jaime Teraki (Kiwi), accompanied the group through the zoo for a day full of activities, including a Crocoseum viewing of the ‘Jungle Book’ and a special meeting of ‘Scout’ the Sumatran tiger cub, sponsored and named by Scouts Queensland in support of the tigers’ conservation. The night then concluded around the campfire with celebratory cake and hot milo. When asked what their favourite part of the camp
was, it was unanimous, with all of the children mentioning how much they loved meeting Scout, who was evidently rather cheeky, though some of them were quick to add that the cake was pretty good too! Landsborough Scouts operates from Rocky Creek campgrounds on Old Gympie Road. Cub scouts is open to boys and girls between the ages of seven to 10 and meets every Tuesday night from 6.00pm to 7.30pm, Scouts (for kids 10 to 14) meets Thursdays from 6.00pm – 8.00pm. Reading - foundation for future learning Ê
The benefits of reading to children at an early age have once again been highlighted – not only by research, but also by a dedicated Glass House Mountains mum who has embraced the benefits of belonging to a local library. Research showed the more often you read to children from an early age, the greater the positive effect on their reading and writing skills. Councillor Jenny McKay said Sunshine Coast Council’s libraries are reaping the rewards from the State Government’s universal family literacy program, First 5 Forever funding. “The First 5 Forever program is really about working together as a community to spend time with babies and children talking, reading, singing and playing. Alison Goodhand from Glass House Mountains said she started visiting libraries after hearing a presentation by a council librarian at a mums’ group organised by Caloundra Community Health Services. “I want to thank the librarian for encouraging me to visit my local Beerwah Library and highlighting the importance of reading to my daughter,” she said. “Two years on I’m reading six to 10 books a day to my daughter and she has very good language skills for her age. “I would have read to my daughter regardless of whether that presenter came to our group, but I know I read to her so much more because of that talk. “My daughter also loves having her own library card and looks forward to our visits to Beerwah Library.” Alison said that parents should know that babies were welcome at Sunshine Coast libraries. “I wasn’t aware there are colourful children’s sections for babies and small kids to play. It was great to find out about baby rhyme time, storytime, the toy library and mobile library,” she said. “Not only does it not matter if your baby makes a little bit of noise, but the libraries are breastfeeding friendly.” To find a storytime or rhymetime session at your local library visit council’s library website www.library.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au.

Health Conscious Families Have you ever considered having a spinal check-up? Your spine is one of the most important structures of your body, yet most people ignore spinal health until pain is present. Just like cavities in your teeth often don’t cause pain until the tooth is quite decayed, spinal problems often don’t cause pain until they’re quite advanced. That’s why regular check-ups at the dentist AND the chiropractor are a great idea to maintain good health in children and adults.
*According to a large review of the current scientific literature published in 2014, 9% of 10-year-olds and 37% of 20-year-olds had spinal disc degeneration with NO pain or symptoms. Isn’t that shocking!? When you consider all of the falls, knocks, sporting injuries, etc that children face – it’s less surprising. So it’s a good idea to have a spinal check early in life. But what about the safety of visiting a chiropractor? According to the research, over the past 31 years, there have been NO deaths and only one questionable injury to a child following chiropractic care in over 350 million adjustments. That is remarkably safe! *Source: http://www.ajnr.org/content/early/2014/11/27/ajnr.A4173.full.pdf
If you’ve never had a spinal check for you or your family, now is a great time. A full chiropractic spine and nervous system exam
is only $29!
**Special offer is for examination only and does not include treatment. If spinal problems are detected, a full report with treatment recommendations will be provided. Child adjustments are $40, Adults are $50. Discounts for families available.

Business opportunities to be had
Environment Look out, you ferals
Business feature James Smith is an industrial spray painter and house painter by trade who recently joined the growing team of motivated individuals who have become Transportable Shade Shed resellers. Based in the Hunter Valley for a number of years, he originally grew up around Mapleton and so was familiar with the quality and branding of the original ‘no rust bend’ Transportable Shade Sheds which have been business leaders in the industry for over 15 years. Although James was familiar with Transportable Shade Sheds from growing up on the Sunshine Coast, his interest in becoming a reseller was sparked after seeing ads on social media that highlighted the potential opportunities for his area. With the building industry starting to slow down around the Singleton – Hunter Valley region, James was motivated to explore other business ventures that would provide an additional source of income and if successful would ultimately lead to a change of career that could sustain his family. James and the team at Transportable Shade Sheds identified a number of viable opportunities in the Hunter Valley – with shelters and shades for the equine, heavy machinery and mining industry, providing the most potential. With a large mining, engineering and resource industry located in the region, James has identified a potentially highly viable market for the 100% Australian designed and manufactured products. The superior engineering of the sheds means they easily meet Australian Standards and occupational health and safety compliance and provide a number of industrial uses such as dangerous goods storage solutions, shade solutions for workers or even cover for heavy machinery that can be completely adapted to suit the equipment. In becoming a reseller, James also has access to the Saver6.com small business support platform which provides online marketing and mentoring, website creation and social media marketing management. A key advantage is that if James is away for any length of time on an industrial painting contract – Saver6.com continues to market and maintain aspects of his business while he is away. As the small business owner of ‘James Smith Transportable Shade Sheds Hunter Valley’, James has found the support from the team at Transportable Shade Sheds excellent. “When I decided to become a reseller the training was really informative and the ongoing support from the team at Transportable Shade Sheds has been great. If I have any questions they are always there to take my calls and answer any queries,” explained James. Currently James has his wife helping out with the new business supported by Saver6.com while he continues to maintain his industrial painting business. His vision is to move out of painting and given the large region he can cover as a Transportable Shade Sheds reseller, and the numerous business leads and opportunities, his objective to eventually become a financially sustainable reseller is entirely possible. If you know someone looking for a Transportable Shade Shed around the Hunter Valley region, please contact James via social media or on 0415 636 817. If you would like to find out more about opportunities in your area or are keen to be your own boss or look at business options that may work well with your current industry, contact the team at Transportable Shade Sheds on 1300 667 433 or Saver6.com on 5405 3620.
Please call James Smith, a Saver6.com member and a Transportable Shade Shed specialist. He is available to help you get your Transportable Shade Shed on your property.

AUGUST 10 2016
If you live at Kenilworth, Conondale or Cambroon don’t be spooked by strange goings on in the night between August 15 and August 17. It might just be Sunshine Coast Council out looking for ferals … animals, that is. Utilising cutting edge technologies, Council pest management officers are able to drive a special thermal imaging camera fitted vehicle and collect information on what animals are present at night. Specifically in the spotlight are feral deer … both Rusa and Red deer species. The program forms part of Council’s feral deer management project. Funded through the Environment Levy, a special Feral Deer Officer has been conducting population surveys, undertaking community awareness and assisting landholders and groups who are experiencing problems with deer. All species of deer are declared pest animals in Queensland if they are not kept in approved enclosures. With deer being more active after dark, the thermal imaging technique provides Council with a more accurate measurement of their population numbers, distribution and habitat use. Other animals – such as cattle, horses and kangaroos – are easily distinguishable by their individual thermal shapes. Council advises that the following areas will be surveyed this time: • Walli Creek Road / Walli Mountain Road, Kenilworth • Aherns Road, Conondale • Kilcoy Lane – Broken Ridge Road, Conondale • Eastern Mary River Road, Cambroon • Booloumba Creek Road, Cambroon According to the Council website, the community can assist Sunshine Coast Council to monitor changes in the deer population and to identify new populations or range extensions. If you have any information or sightings of deer in your area please contact Council at mail@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au or phone 5475 7272. If you suspect there may be deer present on your property, Council can assist you to determine their presence or absence. Council‘s Feral Deer Officer can also advise you how to reduce the impact of deer or assist with the control of deer on your property.
Barung Landcare Lichens
Lichens are ubiquitous in our subtropical environs and often go unnoticed. Once you ‘get your eye in’ for lichens, however, you’ll be overwhelmed by the extraordinary variety of forms and colours almost everywhere you look. Tufts of ‘old man’s beard’, green and yellow-coated rocks, elegant blue-green leafy growths on tree trunks and fence posts are just a few forms. Lichens consist of two organisms living in symbiosis: a fungus, which provides structure, protection, access to moisture and minerals, and cyanobacteria or algae, which photosynthesises and provides food. Lichens liberate nutrients from rocks, wood, rain, and air, providing food for invertebrates as well as vertebrates such as caribou. You may be concerned that lichens growing on your plants are causing harm but usually they’re not. Lichens attach to stable substrates and often establish on slow-growing parts of trees such as bark on trunks. They can grow on almost any surface, including rock, glass, plastic, plants and animals and in the most extreme environments, such as deserts and Arctic tundra. The richest diversity of lichens is found in tropical forests where there can be more than 500 species in a hectare! Lichens existed on earth before dinosaurs and have been used by humans for food, dyes (including Scottish tartan), perfume and medicine. Extracts from lichens have been used in folk medicine in Europe, North America, Africa and Asia to treat a range of conditions including sore throats, breast cancer, scurvy, wounds and menstrual disorders. Fun fact: Ethnolichenology is the study of the relationship between lichens and people. Barung Landcare is a leading community-based organisation working to develop ethical solutions for a sustainable future. We support local and regional community empowerment to conserve and enhance the rich diversity of natural resources of the Blackall Range and environs. You Said It Traffic lights absurdity
I was amazed to read such glowing reports in your newspaper of July 20 concerning the installation of traffic lights at Steve Irwin Way and Reed Street. As an Elimbah resident who uses Steve Irwin Way to travel to work to and from Caloundra, I find it absurd that the need was seen to install traffic lights there. Every time new lights are installed (e.g. at Landsborough), it adds a few minutes to the commute. I would hazard a guess that of the motorists who go through that Reed Street intersection, 10% might find the lights helpful and 90% just want to keep moving and find the lights a nuisance. Why do we provide for the minority? Now it seems there will be lights installed at the junction of Bowen Road and Steve Irwin Way, at the Matilda. Heaven forbid, more delays for those of us who just want to get onto Steve Irwin Way and keep moving. You might say, why don't I use the Bruce Highway? Well, I would think the answer to that suggestion is quite obvious - roadworks have been going on there for seemingly an eternity and I got sick and tired of being stuck in traffic crawls out there. I know that the state and federal governments don't have unlimited funds to build overpasses and the like. But whacking in traffic light after traffic light is not a clever move. What about the excess emissions caused by the extra time cars are on the road, stopped at lights? A more sensible approach to intersections would be to build some local access roads, so people have an alternative to trying to get onto a main road. That seems to have worked pretty well at places such as the Gold Coast Highway and the Mt Lindsay Highway. Let's face it, a lot of people who want to get onto Steve Irwin Way only make a short trip, to schools, shops or the Matilda fruit shop. So keep them off the main road and everyone will be better off. The way we are going, it won't be too long before there's a traffic light at just about every side street on Steve Irwin Way. Paul Dolan Elimbah
Environment Levy
It was with some dismay that I read in the GC&M News, July 27 edition, that our Environment Levy, (increased to $70.00 per property this year) was to be spent on many nefarious items that may, or may not, be of direct benefit to our environment and our native animals. I understood that this Environment Levy was established to purchase and manage valuable tracts of land to enhance the region’s biodiversity. Only $2.67 million of $9.2 million to be actually spent on land purchase would seem to be a very small proportion of the levy. It is disappointing to see that the funding increase in this levy is being spent on so many things other than direct land purchase and management. To fund a ‘Kids in Action Conference’ would appear to be of doubtful benefit, and how is the ‘benefit’ of this $60,000 to be evaluated? Flying fox management sounds more like a sop to residents rather than any benefit to flying foxes and $120,000 to promote pest awareness? Why so much? I believe that many other residents passionate about our rapidly diminishing natural areas and the creatures impacted by the loss of habitat will be similarly dismayed to see this ‘carve up of the funding pie’. If suitable land is not available for purchase in this financial year, this money should 22

Re: D. Browning’s Letter - July 27
The comments in this letter contrast with the recent ABC Lateline interview of Energy Minister Josh Frydenberg, in which he pointed out that South Australia’s high energy cost fluctuations were not caused by renewables. He also told us that these facts were misreported by The Australian (quoted by Mr Browning), and other media. Further, fossil fuel companies and businesses are keen to mislead us. As the cost of solar panels and batteries come down and efficiency increases, solar is actually cheaper over time. Renewables will save us money if you take into account the billions of dollars of subsidies we all pay to give everyone coal and gas generated power all over the countryside. Instead of public money being spent repairing grid and power stations, we need to transition to renewables. Minister Frydenberg believes the science of Climate Change and sees renewables as an industry of the future. It seems the Sunshine Coast Council also understands the benefits of the transition. For an alternative to mainstream media, RenewEcon web site is worth a look. Gillian Pechey Maleny

Since the 1970s and 80s, smoking rates in Australia have been steadily declining (to at least half what they were then) and the sale and marketing of cigarettes has been getting further and further out of the public eye. The current marketing on cigarette packets is enough to make any thinking person want to run a mile - the photos are so graphic!! For some time now, Australia has been a world leader in changing legislation and reducing the number of places where you can legally smoke. Workplaces are now banned by law for smoking on the premises and even in large open spaces (e.g. Australia Zoo), it's mighty hard, if you're a ‘smoker’, to find a safe, legal place to inhale your choice of pollutants! You can be instantly fined $200.00 for smoking on a train platform! The 2000 Sydney Olympics was a great success for another reason - they were the first modern Olympics to have a stadium-wide ban on smokers. So why would Beerwah, home of fresh air, boasting so many fitness centres and host to a myriad of allied health practitioners under the banner of ‘health and well-being’ (e.g. natural
and holistic therapies) want to go back to those dark, smoky ages where smoking was ‘the norm’? We want less smokers in our lovely semi-rural community, not more. We love our clean air and we want to see more people enjoying good health and well-being and not being a burden on our public health system. Lynda M Utting Beerwah

One Hall – 100 years
The Glass House Mountains Community Hall (formerly the School of Arts) turns 100 this year and the committee is planning a day of celebrations, entertainment and reminiscences on Saturday, September 10 from 10.00am. There will be historical displays and photographs, Slim Moroney’s timber truck, part of the Jim Hall collection (which some readers will recall), CWA memorabilia, and items from the Hall collection, plus much more. The Lions will have their barbecue on site for hungry visitors, and Sue and Carol from the Sports Club will be organising morning and afternoon tea. Children from the Glass House Mountains School will be performing, and the Woodford Singers will also be presenting some songs from the early days. Mayor Mark Jamieson will be opening the day’s celebrations, and our local State member Andrew Powell will be launching a book on the 100 year history of the Hall. An invitation is extended to all residents, past and present, to come along and join in the festivities. And keep an eye on the brand new awning currently being erected at the front of the Hall! A new look just in time to celebrate a 100th birthday. Elaine Reeves Hall Centenary Committee

Elected
Representatives Andrew Wallace
Federal Member for Fisher
Thank you for your support
It is now a little over a month since the Federal election was held on July 2. I am humbled and feel privileged by the show of support that the constituents of Fisher have chosen to elect me as their Federal Member with an increased firstpreference margin. I am cognisant of the faith that electors have shown in me and I will be working diligently to ensure that I deliver on my promises during the campaign. Since being elected I have been down to Canberra. On my first day I met with Infrastructure Minister Darren Chester to impress upon him the importance of upgrading the Bruce Highway between the Caloundra Road Interchange and Caboolture. These past few weeks have further demonstrated (as if we needed any more evidence) that accidents continue to turn the Highway into a 60km stretch of car park which is costing the Sunshine Coast, it's businesses and commuters lost productivity and important family time. Perhaps the time has come to examine the merits of establishing an alternative arterial route east of the Bruce Hwy giving access to Caloundra. In the coming weeks, I will be meeting with Senior Executives from Main Roads to obtain a briefing on all Main Roads projects throughout the electorate and the broader region. I am also very keen to put the duplication of the rail line between Beerburrum and Nambour on the Federal agenda. Whilst in Canberra, I also met with the Deputy Leader of the Nationals senator Fiona Nash and Senior Advisors of the Health Minister to discuss funding for the Thompson Institute to establish its much needed research on mental health, in particular, studies and clinical services for those suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Dementia, Youth and Adolescent mental health, eating disorders and many more. Not all of my first-term projects are ‘big-ticket’ items. Some projects are much more modest. For example, during the election, we announced small funding grants to community groups for solar and battery technology. Recipients of that funding include the CCSA Hall in Caloundra, the Maleny Golf Club, Gateway Care in Caloundra and the Alex Surf Club. I still have $10,000.00 left so if there are any community groups interested, please get in touch with my office. There are many challenges that will confront our nation over the next three years. We must reduce our national debt whilst continuing to provide funding for essential services and important infrastructure. Thank you for your continued support and I look forward to serving the people of Fisher over the next three years.

Andrew Powell
Jenny McKay
State Member for Glass House
Division 5 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council
School flashing light mystery Many of you would be aware that I have been fighting to deliver Flashing Lights at the Peachester State School for the last few years. We have not had a lot of success in getting the Minister and his Department to see how vital these lights are for this community, despite a Petition last year showing enormous support for their construction. It certainly came as a surprise when I recently drove through Eudlo and found that they have had Flashing Lights installed at their school. Whilst I am not disappointed that Eudlo have had Flashing Lights installed - they too have been seeking safety improvements for some years – I’ve got to ask the question why Eudlo was prioritised over Peachester? Especially when you consider the differences in the schools’ localities. Eudlo is a quiet country town with only local traffic. Peachester is on a state controlled road that is also a designated tourist route. As the local Member, I am certainly very grateful that Eudlo have this increased protection for their children, but I am at a loss to understand why Peachester are still waiting. I will be writing to the Minister asking why this is the case and lobbying, yet again, for lights to be installed in Peachester.
Local Heroes Grants Round 4 closing August 15 You may have seen a few of our local community groups pick up some of my Local Heroes Grants over the last six months, including Tibro’s Netball and Glasshouse Rural Fire Brigade. It has been a wonderful honour as the local member to present these clubs with a small funding grant to help them with much needed purchases for their groups. This is an ongoing program that I have developed and I would encourage any community groups to apply for the remaining allocations for 2016. The grants were announced in January this year and have been designed to provide some assistance to one group from each of the four regions across Glass House every two months. The application process is easy – all you have to do is visit www.andrewpowell.com.au and click on the link to Andrew’s Local Heroes Grants.
Reminder – Community BBQ August 13 Don’t forget my community BBQ at the park area at the Information Centre this Saturday to celebrate the traffic signals at Reed Street. The event will run from 3.00pm until 5.00pm but if you can let my office know if you are coming so we have enough catering available – 5435 2013 or glass.house@parliament.qld.gov.au.

Mooloolah Breakfast Meeting update
Another well attended Mooloolah Breakfast Meeting took place last week. Thanks to everyone that came out on a cool morning and enjoyed a lovely hot coffee at Kenny’s. I was able to update attendees on a number of matters including: • Council has and will be placing a pedestrian counter on Jones Road between the Mooloolah IGA and Kenny’s Café during and outside of the school holidays to measure pedestrian movements. We are gathering data to help inform us of any potential treatment necessary to provide pedestrian safety. • In terms of Mooloolah Skate Facility, sorry but there was no further update from the Minister’s office regarding this request, however, my office did receive a call during the month from Queensland Rail to obtain a copy of the design drawings. We will not give up! • I can advise that the only approval for the Steve Irwin Way water park is the preliminary approval that was granted by council some time back. There are no subsequent approvals for planning permit or operational works yet lodged with council. Note, the bollards that were placed to prevent vehicular access to the cricket pitch oval will be removed and realigned in consultation with the community.
Mooloolah National Tree Planting Day
Congratulations on the great turnout to Mooloolah Valley’s National Tree Day event last Sunday week. A terrific effort by all, with around 30 volunteers planting 100+ native plants in the Mooloolah recreation reserve. Mooloolah River Waterwatch and Landcare Inc have also committed to working with council as part of our community partnership initiative to help enhance and improve the local environment. For those keen to lend a hand with conservation efforts, stay tuned for a series of working bees, with volunteers learning about and removing weeds from the local area, and encouraging native plant growth.
It’s on for young and old during Seniors Week Diary note for everyone’s calendar – Seniors Week, from this coming Saturday, August 13 until Sunday, August 21 provides a perfect opportunity for all Queenslanders to come together to celebrate the valuable contributions of our older people. In line with our priorities in the Sunshine Coast Social Strategy, council is partnering with not-for-profit organisations and community groups to highlight Seniors Week activities and events, incorporating the 2016 theme ‘It’s on for young and old’. Even our libraries are getting into the Seniors Week spirit with a range of activities aimed at members aged 50+. For full event information visit council’s website.

Living - Arts Yarn bombing group wins Best Community Group award By Sonia Clark Following on from the success of local events such as Maleny’s Knitfest and various pop up displays of colourful knitted or crocheted street art around the Coast – the vibrant and eye catching guerrilla crochet art of ‘Yarn Bombing’ has definitely become increasingly popular. Last week Glass House Mountains local Lynne Rix made contact with GC&M News to let us know that her craft group ‘The Caloundra Yarn Bombers’ had won the ‘Best Community Group’ award at the recent ‘Jumpers and Jazz in July’ event held in Warwick at the end of July. The theme for this years’ 10-day event was bohemian and so the ladies from the craft group incorporated a ‘wandering theme’ into their entry which was titled ‘Wanderers of the Sea’. It took around nine months to create 131 handcrafted jellyfish and a tree jumper of crochet coral. The coral was specially made using a technique called Hyperbolic Crochet - which used a specially designed pattern to allow a realistic curly effect. The craft group of around 12 members follows on from a larger group that originally met monthly at the Caloundra Art Gallery, and were part of the Sunshine Coast Satellite crocheted reef installation that created work for an exhibition held in June last year involving over 200 yarn bombers. The group now meets every second Friday from 9.30am - 12.00pm at the Caloundra Community Centre on Queen Street and interested ladies from the Hinterland are most welcome to join.
Members of the Caloundra Yarn Bombers in front of the winning entry. Inset - The winning tree entry “It’s great company and enjoyable to be doing similar activities as a group – we get to teach each other and learn more about knitting tips when we meet,” explained Lynne Rix. The group of dedicated yarn bombers have had their art displayed at the new Paisley Park space in Caloundra and were awarded a highly commended for their contribution to this years’ inaugural Maleny Knitfest Yarn and Fibre Arts Festival. Planning has now started for next years’ Knitfest contribution with the current idea of committing to three projects a year. If you would like to find out more or get involved, please contact Lynne Rix on 5438 7988 or the Caloundra Yarn bombers via the Community Centre on 5491 4000.
Landsborough Art Group exhibition
Landsborough Art Group, which commenced back in 1995, continues to see different painters come along to paint for pleasure and share their skills with others. During the months of August and September seven members of this group have hung, or will hang, an exhibition at the Montville Community Hall. There are around 25 paintings with the mediums including oil, water colour, acrylics, embellished prints of originals and pastels with a varying array of subject matter. All displayed are very reasonably priced and are available for purchase. The Village on the Green markets will be held on August 13 and the exhibits will form part of the market. Contact the Montville Hall coordinator Ruth on 0429 997 771 to make a purchase or in regard to hall availability and open days.

Out & About Plenty of fun at Funfest Glasshouse Christian College's Funfest is so huge it only happens once every two years. Saturday, July 30 was the big day and the months of planning and anticipation of the event did not disappoint. The weather was perfect and thousands of people came out to enjoy all the fun. The rides, stands, food stalls, activities and performances were a great success and one activity that was particularly popular was 'Slime the Teacher'. In the past water has been used, but this year the balloons were filled with gloopy, gloppy slime - much to the delight of the students who lined up for a turn.

Jeremy Irons and Dev (Slumdog Millionaire and Exotic Marigold Hotel) Patel play the major leads in ‘The Man Who Knew Infinity’, to be screened by the Maleny Film Society on Saturday, August 13 in the Maleny Community Centre, Maple Street. This biographical drama from scriptwriter/producer Matt Brown, is based on a fascinating true story of mentorship. Hardy (Irons) from Trinity College Cambridge mentors Madras-born mathematical genius Srinivasa Ramanufan (Patel), who in 1913 posted his intuitive theories to England and was beckoned across the continents to share them. Proving his theories grew into a long-term struggle. Atheist, Hardy, and Hindu, Ramanufan, found a middle ground in mathematics. The two mathematicians were encouraged by Bertrand Russell (Jeremy Northam) to challenge the academic establishment in a country that was soon to suffer the cold privations of a World War. The Good Neighbour Award for August was presented to Robyn Baker, representing the Beerwah branch of the CWA, which was nominated by Maree Anderson, who wrote: ‘The CWA ladies bring the community together on a regular basis by holding the Tower Green Markets. These markets are an avenue for local artisans to showcase their work, home based business to sell their goods and a platform for young artists to perform and perfect their talent. I see children having fun, raising money for local causes and learning how a community works. This organisation is very worthy of the Good Neighbour Award for the many contributions made to our community. Thank you Beerwah CWA.’

From the churches Pastor Barry Leask - Church on the Rise Maleny A man called Job in the Bible has an awesome story of recovery, restoration and not giving up in life. Job goes through this terrible season of loss. He lost his family, his possessions and his health. Then during this season of loss, he is able to make this powerful declaration in Job 19: 25 I know that my redeemer lives, in the end he will stand on the earth, after my body has decayed, yet I will see God! These verses are really the key to his recovery and restoration and the stand out word is ‘know’. This word know means intimacy and relationship. Then we see that Job has this great relationship with God. Where he knows the Redeemer is alive. He knows the Redeemer is returning, and He knows the Redeemer gives eternal life to all those that will receive Him. During this

season of loss he was given lots of advice from his friends, most of it was condemnatory. At the end of the chapter when the restoration and recovery happened, these advisors were cautioned by God. It is so reassuring when we go through difficult seasons in life, God does not speak condemnatory words to us, but He speaks grace. When the Pharisees caught a woman in a gross sin and wanted to stone her, Jesus simply spoke grace to her and said where are your accusers? she answered there are none Lord. Jesus said I do not condemn you, go and sin no more. Jesus speaks grace to people when He Says Mat 11:28 ‘Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you'll recover your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest. 29. Walk with me and work with me-watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won't lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. 30. Keep company with me and you'll learn to live freely and lightly.’ As we face difficult seasons in life, let us allow God to speak grace to our lives.

Valuable home library service The residents of Blue Care Maleny Erowal Aged Care Facility continue to experience the magic of reading and learning thanks to Sunshine Coast Council’s Maleny Library home library service. Division 5 and Community Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said people love visiting their favourite library as it offers a fulfilling experience. “However, there are some borrowers who cannot for one reason or another access a library and that’s where council’s home library service comes in,” Cr McKay said. “This region-wide service is wonderful as they deliver books directly to the borrower’s home, or in the case of Blue Care, to their Erowal aged care facility. “This regular service relies on the support of wonderful volunteers who deliver and return books and other items. “They also offer the valuable social contact that people receive when they visit their favourite library which is a real community hub and meeting place.” Blue Care Volunteer Co-ordinator Roma Burrell praised the Maleny Library staff for assisting their volunteers to select books from the Sunshine Coast Libraries collection. “Sustaining residents’ love of reading and learning was something our centre had a keen eye on doing for some time before Maleny Library offered their wonderful program,” she said. “The program has been running successfully for several years and involves delivering books directly to our resident’s rooms and importantly they suit the interests of each individual.
“Some residents who used to read a lot have changed to audio books and like most avid readers they are good at imagining while they listen to their stories. Ms Burrell said she would also like to thank the Friends of Maleny Library and Rotary for supplying CD players and ear phones. They have been an enormous help as they come with a special USB connection. “I have been a Volunteer Coordinator with Blue Care’s Maleny Erowal Aged Care Facility for several years and I cannot express my gratitude enough to the staff and volunteers of the Maleny Library,” she said. To find out more about the home library service call 5475 8989 or visit council’s library website www.library.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au to view the extensive range of benefits as a library member. happy environment for both the residents and their visitors. It transforms it from a residential aged care facility to somewhere that aged people can live and receive the care they deserve. Great efforts are made to create a familiar and homely environment, such as featuring professional photography of local scenery through the complex. Individual shadow boxes are found outside the resident’s rooms for them to display items that are significant or personal to them. Also included are purpose built facilities such as a library, café, hairdressing salon, theatre, chapel and for the gentleman to get some time out, there is even a ‘Men’s Den’. Residents also have the option of an in-room telephone service with a direct-dial phone number and WiFi internet connection so they can stay connected with their loved ones. A splendid feature is the lovely communal areas where the residents can enjoy spending time
with family and friends who come for a visit. One such area is the well-appointed family dining room, which is perfect for special events and celebrations. However, the best way to appreciate the facilities is to see it for yourself. Phone their friendly staff and book an appointment to have a tour – you will definitely be impressed.
Embracia in Woodford
Daphne Chase, Resident We use to drive around Woodford all the time and I pointed out to my daughters … “This will be my new home!” So now I am here, I feel very lucky I am enjoying all the activities and the food is beautiful – 10/10. All the staff are really great and support me in every way. I am really enjoying life here. There is a freedom … not being frightened of falling nor worrying about my health.
Embracia in Woodford, I am glad to call my new home! Keitha Viney, Wife of resident Richard Viney – Jinabara Memory Support Community I heard that Embracia were building a new home at Woodford which would have a smaller number of residents residing in the Memory Support Community. So I decided there and then that Rick, my husband, should move to Embracia in Woodford. I am really happy with the situation here, it is warm and friendly and the staff are very conscientious. Every time I am here the staff are interacting with all the residents and my husband is contented.

Learn about retirement villages Many seniors think about moving into a retirement village or caravan park as a way to downsize when the family home becomes too big for them. Lawyers experienced in the field of retirement villages will discuss important questions on Wednesday, August 24 from 1.00pm - 2.30pm at the Beerwah Library and on Friday, August 26, from 10.00am 11.30am at Maleny Library. Questions that will be answered on the day include what is a retirement village?
What is the difference between a retirement village and a manufactured home park? What does it cost to buy into a retirement village? What sort of ownership will I get: Freehold, leasehold, license, company title? Are there costs I will have to pay while living in a retirement village? What happens if I become too ill to continue living in a retirement village? What happens if I die while residing in a retirement village? Attendance is free, however bookings are essential, phone 5475 8989.

Is lack of sleep killing you? by Bryce Perron MD CPAP Direct Don’t ignore the snore! Sleep quality is more important than sleep time. Sounds like a bold statement but it’s general knowledge that the three main keys to staying in shape are … correct diet, exercise and sleep. Sleep is often overlooked as a priority in our busy lives and it is that vital to our overall wellbeing that many of us suffer without being aware. By design, we spend one third of our life in bed – more time than we spend in our car. And the environment we sleep in will have a direct impact on our body’s ability to heal and regenerate. People with sleep apnea are often among the worst snorers and lack energy during the day. CPAP can help with this but if the bed we’re lying on isn’t physically supporting us in the anatomically correct position, our health may still be deteriorating faster than it should. Diabetics often have circulation problems or

experience swelling of the legs. People with lower back pain, arthritis or reflux also need to make the bed environment a priority. More often than not, we sleep on a piece of furniture and not an adjustable bed that is a GST-free device designed to help us live healthier lives. The Ultimate Sleep System from Wenatex is now on show in our local stores, and has many benefits to aid quality sleep and posture. The mattress zones progressively adapt to individual body shapes for side and back sleeping. With a firmer lumber section, and softer shoulder and calf sections, they promote correct sleep posture, and improved sleep patterns. They are also laced with silver to aid in
hygienically controlling bacteria, and there are optional herbal regeneration inlays with 17 herbs triggered and activated by body heat during the night. If you don’t feel like you’re getting the most out of life, talk to the experts at CPAP Direct about how we can improve your sleep environment, revitalise your energy levels and give your body the best chance to get the most out of the third of your life you’ll spend in bed. Video reviews and more information on our Wenatex range are available at www.cpap.com. au, or call 1300 133 298.

Probus – 15th birthday
Contributed by Gordon McCormack After 15 good years, the Glasshouse Mountains Probus Club felt it right to have a birthday, and two of our original three members Valerie and Ruth cut the cake Fred deferred to the ladies. Keith and Valerie Inglis, with half a dozen of the local families, got the Probus Club going in 2001 and it has lived up to all they wished. With 38 members at the first meeting the club has grown steadily to 50. This is a Club where everybody takes responsibility in a family way to keep it happening. As always you’ll get some Ruth and Valerie cutting who walk the extra yards to make it work our birthday cake smoothly and over time we have recognised them. With special Club commendations going to Judy and Keith, Marita and Stan, Pam, and June and Ruth. We have honoured Keith, Valerie and Gordon with Life Memberships. We’ve enjoyed over 100 guest speakers to spread our minds as well as gone on delightful outings on which our Fellowship prospers. We also recognised the marvellous support of GC&M News as a medium for keeping us in touch with our community – we record our thanks. We have had at various times over our 15 years, a number of sub groups such a Tai Chi, choir singing, Mah Jong, play reading and most recently music appreciation to widen our interests. We enjoy rewarding ‘chat’ mornings as well as sharing lunch at one or other of the local nosheries which give us a lovely togetherness. As President Peter summed it up, in 2000, Keith Inglis expressed the hope that all members would contribute to make this a happy, harmonious and progressive club and it certainly has. If Probus sounds like it could suit you, give Gordon a ring on 5439 0446.

Fixed Fee Intitial Consultation Available Beerwah Law, formerly King Tobin Lawyers, are your local solicitors and have been established in Beerwah for over 30 years. Tracy King and her team are here to advise and assist you in legal areas relevant to Seniors including estate planning, estate administration, Wills, Enduring Powers of Attorney, Advance Health Directives and entry and exit into retirement villages. We are a general practice and therefore we cover most areas of the law for you. We are ‘Your Lawyers For Life’.
Wills To ensure that the administration for your estate is as easy as possible for your loved ones we strongly recommend that a qualified solicitor draft your Will for you. Unfortunately, the courts are full of matters which are being litigated purely because a ‘home-made Will’ cannot be interpreted sensibly, has various interpretations or has not adequately considered all matters required. A well drafted Will also takes into account matters other than assets within the estate, such as superannuation and life insurance, to ensure that all of your assets are dealt with consistently. Importantly, a general discussion with us about the nature and extent of your assets and liabilities and our advice to you in that regard, can save your executors a great deal of time, money and stress.

the Guardianship and Administration Tribunal for an Order. Such an Order can take a considerable period of time and involves a great deal of work. It also can lead to ill-will and disputes between your loved ones.
Advance Health Directive You may wish to instruct us to draft an Advance Health Directive for you. This document specifies the level and degree of intensity of medical care you wish to receive in certain situations. It runs in conjunction with your Enduring Power of Attorney and it is therefore very important that it does not conflict with your Enduring Power of Attorney, which unfortunately we have seen regularly when either of those documents has not been drafted by a qualified solicitor. Please contact us to discuss your legal needs and make an appointment for us to assist you.
F:
Enduring Power of Attorney It is our opinion that everyone must have an Enduring Power of Attorney. In some respects, it is more important than a Will, as without one you may be left in a state of legal limbo with no-one able to legally look after your financial affairs or make health decisions for you. This, unfortunately, regularly happens to people who do not have an Enduring Power of Attorney and who find themselves in hospital but are assessed as not being able to return home. If they are incapable of making an Enduring Power of Attorney then an Application needs to be made through QCAT to

New dental prosthetist in town Brian Stuart-Nairne is your dental prosthetist at Beerwah. A Hinterland local, he and his family have lived on the Sunshine Coast for over 40 years. Highly experienced, Brian has been practising dental prosthetics on the Coast for over 35 years and is a qualified BPS provider which is the most advanced denture system available today. He also brings over 30 years’ experience in implant dentistry to the practice. Dentures need regular maintenance and yearly checks are advisable. Full dentures usually require relining at 3 - 4 years, and replacement at 7- 8 years. There are a number of reasons for this. Firstly, the bone supporting the teeth shrinks at a very slow rate continually after teeth are extracted. The upper jaw shrinks upwards and the lower jaw shrinks downwards. This causes the space between the two jaws to increase and then the lower jaw needs to rise further up to make the teeth meet to chew (called ‘over-closure’). To make matters worse, the denture teeth wear and this increases the distance further and consequently causes more over-closure. The result is loose dentures, food under the denture, ulcers, the loss of a pleasant smile, a ‘no tooth’ look, eating difficulties, increased facial wrinkles and sometimes joint pain and dysfunction. Regular obligation free checks with Beerwah Denture Clinic can avoid these problems and correct any necessary problems as they arise.
The Beerwah Denture Clinic provides the latest, most advanced dentures available today. They also provide both metal and plastic partial dentures including hidden clasps, mouthguards, relines and fast repairs. For client convenience, they can offer relines in half a day and one hour repairs if required. Some full dentures, especially full lower dentures, may cause great discomfort and very poor chewing ability due to bone loss over time. This bone loss results in severe denture instability and poor function and increasing discomfort. The solution is to place two implants and retainers and the denture clips to these. The denture can still be removed for cleaning but is reassuringly stable during daily function. This economical implant process is a relatively painless procedure and can be performed in Beerwah to provide vastly improved comfort and function for the denture wearer. For those wanting to say goodbye to removable dentures—fully fixed appliances are available. Brian is part of an experienced team that can offer fixed implant retained appliances that can do away with dentures completely! This option usually suits those who have suffered advanced bone loss, find wearing a denture difficult to tolerate or just want to get rid of their dentures forever. An additional advantage is that it also leaves the roof of the mouth uncovered to allow feeling temperature and sensing taste better.
Isobelle Payton and Dental Prosthetist Brian Stuart-Nairne Their new clinic at Beerwah is fitted with the latest equipment and an in-house dental laboratory to provide you with the best available dental care in the shortest possible time. They can repair broken dentures in one hour and reline dentures in only half a day. They are a provider to DVA, private health funds and conveniently offer Hicaps for immediate refund on health fund rebates. With easy car parking available in front and behind, the new clinic is located at 74 Simpson Street, Beerwah, next to the Aldi carpark. Appointments can be made with Isobelle on 5439 0388 or just drop in next time you’re in town.

Senior
MOMENTS
Taking care of your future
With many seniors today proactively planning their future, it is important to look for support options being available to those downsizing their homes, but not their lifestyle. Maleny Grove Manager, Greg Guilford said the retirement community of Maleny Grove was a popular and affordable choice as it allows seniors to unlock home equity to live in the location, lifestyle and environment of their choice. “Maleny Grove offers a low maintenance lifestyle in spacious, award winning environmentally designed homes that promote physical independence, together with the availability of supported living options as needed,” he said. “Maleny Grove facilities and landscape have grown since its opening in 2010 with the inclusion of a heated pool and spa as well as a community vegetable and herb garden, putting green, off leash pet enclosure and resident workshop. “The village takes advantage of its beautiful location with free standing and duplex villas offering a low maintenance lifestyle with a supported living option allowing you time to do the things you enjoy most.” “In today’s environment, the children of many retirees remain in the workforce and are not always available to assist parents as they need, so supported living options is an important consideration in the lifestyle decision process.” This allows families to share quality time together and provides a sense of independence in not having to rely on family and friends for assistance,” Greg said. Choosing a retirement community that is the best fit for individual needs is an important decision. For your personal inspection of what Maleny Grove has to offer call us on 1300 556 575.

President Coral Beutel welcomed members and representatives from neighbouring garden clubs, including Sally Joyce’s parents from Kyogle, to an enjoyable day for a social gathering to celebrate Friendship Day in July. Glenis Bruin, director of Zone of Garden Clubs, Australia, reminded us of QCGC celebrating 50 years next year. Our first guest speaker was Kev Wrayford, from the Peachester Rural Fire Brigade, who spoke about fire safety in the home, the differences between rural and city fire brigades and the improvements made over the past few years in equipment and training. Very impressive, considering the rural fire brigades consist mainly of volunteers. Kev also presented Vicki Blaik with her Theo Beenders advanced fire fighting certificate. Congratulations Vicki. Steve Arndell from Superway Garden Products based in Beerwah, spoke about the products they produce for the eradication of termites for home owners and around rural properties. Also, he spoke about the range of other products for pest and weed control which they manufacture and send all over Australia. Shona Hight was the lucky winner of the Termite Bait Station donated by Steve. A big thank you to the guest speakers for your interesting and informative talks. Shona Hight Throughout the morning, a large number of raffle prizes were drawn. The main prize, a basket of garden products, was won by Norma McLeod from Maleny. Second prize of a potted Leptospermum was won by Vicki Blaik from Peachester. Birthday wishes were extended to Nessie Pratten who has celebrated her 97th birthday. Results of the competition bench for June were: 1st Coral Beutel, 21 points, 2nd Gordon Howitt, 18 points. Visitors and new members are welcome to join us for our next meeting on Thursday, August 18, 9.30am in the garden of Jenny Wellstead. Bring along a chair and mug. Paw paw pandemonium Local Beerburrum identity John ‘The Ferret’ Moran (OAM) is well known for his bush poetry and spoken performance, but his hidden talent appears to be fruit growing. Well, paw paws … and just one tree … but what a ripper it is! The prodigious producing papaya is only 18 months old, but is already not far off five metres tall and is bearing well over 200 plump fruits. John says that his wife, Margo, grew the monster from seeds kept from a fruit bought at Matilda’s Fruit Barn. “Margo grew three seedlings … so it’s lucky she only planted one of them,” said John. “The thing has been growing so fast that the creaking of its growing pains wakes me up in the night. And there’s so many fruits that Margo calls me ‘the fruit bat’ with the amount I have to eat.” Amazingly, they have done nothing special to encourage the colossal plant. “We just water it,” says Margo. “We don’t fertilise it or anything special, so it’s a mystery to us as to why it’s doing so well. “The fruit tastes lovely and they have very few – if any – seeds.” Consequently, neighbours in the Gateway Lifestyle complex where they live, are well supplied. Amazingly, clusters of three fruits grow on many of the stems, which creates the crowding effect around the trunk. Good work, John ‘The Fruit Bat’ Moran.

Plant of the Week
Thyme Honey Myrtle
Melaleuca thymifolia The Thyme Honey Myrtle is another example of one of our wonderful local plants. It occurs naturally over a large area of Eastern Australia’s coastline. Over Spring and Summer the shrub bears stunning whorls of bright pink flowers. It has small rounded leaves that are bluish green in colour. In the garden in full sun it makes a lovely shrub approx 1m x 1m but can handle a semi shaded position. It is a very hardy shrub that can handle a range of soil types. They look great in a mixed native wildflower garden.

The Rotary Resting Seat
‘The Rotary Club of the Glasshouse Land, suggests you stop, and rest a while. Reflect upon what Steve has done, to save the earthly wild. The passion of this warrior bold, though recognising risk, proceed on his chosen path, to educate the rest. Time taken resting with us here, upon this humble seat. Could be the time that you may need, to help you understand, the mission of this focused man. His goals, his passions and his feats. We thank you for the time you take, to rest upon this seat. Reflecting on our planets needs and things that I can change. It may be for the sky above or for the land we tread or for the water that we love or for our wildlife friends. My time has not been wasted here while resting on this seat. I can now set out a warrior’s plan that I can implement.’ Robert J. LOW COST GLASS REPLACEMENT
Some of the fellas at the Glasshouse Country Menshed have recently completed a project to refurbished this timber seat for Australia Zoo. The seat was originally donated by Glasshouse Rotary after the death of Steve Irwin. It has a memorial plaque, the words of which were written by the now Menshed president Bob McLean. The plaques reads:
• New Homes • Repaints • Roofs & Roof Restoration • Decks • House & Roof Washing

Sport Beerwah Ladies Golf
Contributed by Pam Marsden and Carolyn Gamble It has been a big week of golf for the Beerwah Golf Ladies, starting on Tuesday, August 2 with Ladies Invitation Day. Numbers were down on other years, but this didn't prevent everyone having a fun-filled day. Glasshouse Mountains Pest Control sponsored the day and we sincerely thank John and Noeline Annakin for their continued support to the Club. Thanks to Gwyneth Drain for the magnificent patchwork quilt which was raffled on the day and also to Marshall Caldwell for the beautifully handcrafted drinks trolley which was auctioned off to the highest bidder. Over $900.00 was raised on the day and this money will go towards the renovation of the practice nets. Special thanks go to Joan Harvey, Shirley Mathieson, Vikki Bartel, Geoff Williamson, Col Penney, Geoff Carson and Vic Johnson for their contributions towards making the day so successful. Div 1 Winners - Carol Fraser and Gundie Turpie, runners up - Vikki Bartel and Sue Greentree and 2nd runners up - Lea Garner and Sue Williamson. Super Strawberry Round 6 The competition in the 2016 Super Strawberry competition is getting serious now – another week with the winner achieving the best weight so far this year. Round 6 was won by Burrum Berries with an entry weighing 162 grams! With five entries this week in the biggest category, it is exciting to see such enthusiastic participation. The ‘most unusual’ section continues to create interest, with Greg Harvey making this competition his own. Greg won the round again with the ‘shark face and teeth’ and also brought in a very cute love heart. Round 7 is now open; and entries are welcome at Coochin Creek Co-op any time during the week for weighing and recording. Make sure you bring your entries in before the closing time of 4.00pm on Friday, August 12.
Glasshouse Bowls Club
Contributed by David Hayes Tuesday, August 2: The Ladies started their Pennant season with a game away to Bribie Island. After winning division 3 last year they were moved up to division 2 this season. One team had a draw and the other a loss. Overall Glasshouse went down. On Wednesday the ladies played Bribie Island at home. It was a tough day for all with Glasshouse going down on both rinks and having a loss overall. Hopefully they can fight back with a win next week. Please be aware there will be no Wednesday Jackpot this month on August 10. This is because the ladies play pennants. We will be back the second Wednesday in September. Wednesday, August 3: Social Bowls. Lee Meyers and Doug Sweedman def Maz Idle and Warren Blackbourne 24-5. Russell Walmsley, Marilyn Boulton and John McSwain def Graham Meyers, Peter Connor and Ron Wilson 21-16. Thursday, August 4: 6 rinks of bowls were played. The teams were club selected. On countback the winners of the day were Jack Timm and Rob Scullion with two wins plus 21. R/Up were Don Tierney and Max Viterale with 17. Lucky draw went to Simon Richter and Graham Nicholson. In Pennants second division played at home against Solander Lakes and had a win overall by 6 shots. Fifth Division played at home against Caboolture Memorial and in a tight game went down by 1 shot. Second Division is finished for the year. They were very unlucky not to win Division 2 finishing with five wins out of six games. Fifth division play at home to

Thursday, August 4: Unfortunately, the weather was not kind to us, with high, cold winds and showers – there was no competition. Bribie Island next week. Sunday saw a great turnout for the Police bowls day. The final score were Police 135 - Glasshouse 98. Recently we held our meeting to determine which comps we will play in January 2017. The meeting went well. It was decided we will enter Premier League 7’s and Hinterland. The Seven’s will be played in place of Super Challenge. For those men and ladies that would have played Super Challenge you may be interested in this comp. It is mixed, so men and ladies can both play together which is a great idea as the club was aware how hard it was to have a ladies team in two comps last season. Expression of interest sheets are up at the club now. We need to have numbers done by mid October to register. As of October 1, next year’s bowls memberships will be open to pay. This year the new fee will be $85.00. You have until the end of December to pay. Saturday, September 3 at 9.00am is our Annual General Meeting. Committee positions will be open for election for 2016-17. I really hope we have some members ready to step up and help. It’s not hard, the more people we have, the less work it will be for each member on the board. Remember without a board there is no club. If you plan to stand for a position, you can ask for a nomination form at the office. Bowls coaching is on from Sunday 10.30am to 12.00noon every week. Bowlers of all ages and abilities are welcome. Come along for a roll, it is great fun. encourage those golfers who have not played before and those who have not played for a long time. They get to play with a member and a very reduced cost for 9 holes; a great afternoon. First place went to Graham Shoebridge with 20 points, who won the chook, on a count-back from our runner-up Anne Devane, also with 20 points. Third place went to Graham Nott with 17 points on a count-back from John Oxenham and our encouragement award went to David Hay. Saturday, August 6: An 18 Hole Single Stableford was held up at our Club and our winner was Joe Walters with 38 points, runner-up went to Jon Fairman with 37 points on a count-back from Chris Pottinger and Doug Hancock, all with 37 points. Nearest to the Pin went to Chris Pottinger on the 3rd hole and Paul Lowe on the 5th hole. The picturesque Maleny Golf Club is situated at 15 Porters Lane, North Maleny. The ambiance and natural environment of the course offers nine holes, each with its own challenge. The course provides an enjoyable golfing challenge for players of all standards. Visitors are most welcome. For more information, visit the web site: www.malenygolfclub.com.au www.gcnews.com.au
A team of young Sunshine Coast footballers including Josh Wall from Beerwah, and Sean Pateman from the BeeGees club, will have the opportunity to represent our region abroad as well as engage in some tough but friendly competition in China next week. Sunshine Coast Football has accepted an invitation to participate in the Xiamen Invitational Youth Football Tournament taking place in the city of Xiamen, a port city on China’s south-east coast, from August 7-15. The Sunshine Coast team consists of 16 players from various Coast football clubs, accompanied by
four coaches/managers. Mayor of the Sunshine Coast, Mark Jamieson said this was going to be a very memorable trip for these talented Coast footballers. The tournament would feature two teams from Xiamen as well as Shanghai, Qingdao, Inner Mongolia and Yanbian, as well as representatives from the Czech Republic, South Korea and Malaysia. Xiamen has a long tradition of modern football. In the middle of the 19th century, British navy sailors stationed in Xiamen introduced the modern game of football to China and built the country’s first football pitch on the Gulangyu Islet.

Range Croquet Club
Contributed by Gail Denver Some of our players have had a busy week, starting with pennants on Wednesday – Bribie Island players Monica Ackland and Ken Wallman paid us a visit to play the penultimate round of the Lochwood Shield. Our visitors were successful in the singles with Monica defeating Val Carbery 26 to 9 and Ken outlasting Nick Cram 19 to 16. We had some revenge in the doubles with Ken Barker and Vince Carbery taking on the visitors and winning 23 to 7. On Sunday we attempted to wrestle the Lew Fitchen trophy from Nambour, whom we play annually in a doubles competition. Nine of our members visited Nambour for the battle. We had high hopes that the trophy would return to Maleny, but alas it was not to be. At lunch it was two games apiece but Nambour prevailed in the afternoon, winning the last four games. Congratulations to the hosts. Even though we lost, it was a most enjoyable day. Regular association croquet coaching is held on Saturday mornings; the Range Croquet Club at the Maleny Showgrounds always welcomes new players at any time, with coaching and mallets available for beginners. Mooloolah at districts Athletics Carnival
Contributed by Michelle Lenz Recently many students from Mooloolah State School proudly represented us at The Coastal Small Schools at the Glasshouse District Athletics Carnival. They competed over two days and tried their hardest against tough competitors in all events. They ran hard and fast, they jumped high and long and threw as far as they could to try and get the edge on their competition. Tahlia Parry received runner up age champion after finishing 2nd in long jump and 100m and 200m sprints, and will compete at the regional sports carnival next week, as will Akemi Evans for her outstanding efforts in long jump, taking first place. The students cheered their team mates on, and represented the school with great sportsmanship towards other schools. They sure did themselves and their school proud with their outstanding efforts, enthusiasm and behaviour. Congratulations to all students who competed at the carnival. Thank you to all the parents that car pooled to get our students to the event and thank you for being there as the cheer squad. Mooloolah State School is proud of all of you.

Sport Maleny Bowls Club
Contributed by Ian Hansen Saturday, August 3 Championship Finals were played: Men’s Singles, Men’s Pairs and Mixed Pairs. Congratulations to all the winners and commiserations to the losers. Two of these Matches were very close encounters. In the Men’s Singles, Pairs Partners but Singles Rivals, Curley Petersen and Ian Hansen (also last year’s finalists) fought out a closely contested match. Curly lead by 4 shots after 6 ends but Hansen fought back to lead by 4 shots, 12 shots to 8 after 12 ends. On the 13th end Hansen held 2 shots which would have given him a handy 6 shot buffer but Curley proved equal to the task and with a great bowl shifted the Jack to turn a 2 shot deficit into a 2 shot margin and reduce the lead to just 2 shots. Hansen then committed the gravest of errors in dropping the whole 4 shots on the 16th end to surrender the lead and was unable to recover. Curly lead 22 shots to 18 and held Match on the 24th end but Hansen played a great Bowl to save the match. He then won 3 shots on the 26th end to trail 22 shots to 24 but Curly won the 27th and hence the match, in what was a most enjoyable match. The Men’s Pairs Final was another closely fought match between Jim King/Don Ginns and Allan Cook/ Warwick Moody. The lead changed a number of times but after 18 ends they were locked together on 17 shots each. Jim and Don then won 3 shots on the 19th and 2 shots on the 20th to give them a commanding 5 shot lead going into the last end. Fortunately, this proved just enough as Allan and Warwick took 4 shots on the final end to go down by just a single shot, 21 shots to 22. Jim and Don’s victory proved that their win over four times Pairs winners in the Semi-final was no fluke. The Mixed Pairs Final was won by the Oldfields, Lucy and Ray, by 31 shots to 14 over Margaret Ginns and Graeme Glover. Tuesday’s winners with 2 wins +30 were the Triples team of Sandra Kapetanic, Jim King and Curly Petersen. Once again the Jackpot wasn’t won so is building up to quite a sizeable amount. Wednesday’s Twilight Challenge winning Teams were: Bom Diggety, Handles, Ezi Riders, Mighty 10 and Tutors. The individual winners were: Lead - Dave Edwards, 2nd - Melita Gesch and Skip - Jackie Montgomery. The Touchers went to: Dicko, Dave Edwards and Dave Handley. The lucky money board winners were Sandra Han and Dave Handley. Friday’s Scroungers winners were: Heather Snel, Joe Walters, Jane Burgess, Scott Alexander and Ian Porter. The only member present to claim her Sponsors’ Prize win was Jane Burgess who won the Monica’s Cafe Prize. The Money Board went to Tony Snel. There was a visit from the Ulysses Motorcycle Club on Sunday which was enjoyed by all and many thanks to the helpers. This week there is Jackpot Pairs/Triples Tuesday, Twilight Challenge Wednesday Scroungers Friday and the last of the Championship Finals Saturday. Finally, Wednesday August 17, there is a visit from the New Zealand Group Tour Bowlers and players may be needed for Bowls at 1.00pm.
Witta Tennis
Contributed by Pauline Fraley ln spite of the valiant efforts of Witta Wagtails they fell prey to Maleny Racqueteers. Thanks to Gerry, Christine, Pauline and Sonia. Whistlers played at Yandina against Allsorts. Everyone struggled with the tricky wind and when the first two sets went to tiebreakers we knew it was going to be long day. We managed to bring the win home by only one game. Score was 37-36 games, four sets all. The team was Liz Mellish, Brenda Warner, Donna Kuskopf and Aki Lepper. The Wildcats had a good win against Yandina Plain Janes. Pauline, Libby, Jenie and Sonia played hard from the get go and didn’t let up. The score was 7-1 sets, 46-27. Don’t forget Heroes day on August 20. Social tennis: Monday 8.00am and Saturday 1.00pm, all welcome. Court bookings: 0437 295 501 or www.wittatennis.com.au. 52

Just for Laughs Haunted car
Greg was on the side of the road hitchhiking on a very dark stormy night. The storm was so strong he could hardly see a few feet ahead of him. Suddenly, he saw a car slowly coming towards him and stopped. Desperate for shelter and without thinking about it, got into the car and closed the door... only to realise there was nobody behind the wheel and the engine wasn’t on. The car started moving slowly. He looked at the road ahead and saw a curve approaching. Scared, he started to pray, begging for his life. Then, just before the car hit the curve, a hand appeared out of nowhere through the window, and turned the wheel. Greg, paralysed with terror, watched as the hand came through the window, but never touched or harmed
him. Shortly thereafter, he saw the lights of a pub appear down the road, he jumped out of the car and ran to it. Wet and out of breath, he rushed inside and started telling everybody about the horrible experience he had just had. A silence enveloped the pub when everybody realised he was crying... and wasn’t drunk. Suddenly, the door opened, and two other people walked in from the dark and stormy night. They were also soaked and out of breath. Looking around, and seeing Greg sobbing at the bar, one said to the other. "Look Norm....there’s that idiot that got in the car while we were pushing it!" SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 What a marvellous weekend you may have as Saturn moves direct again, in your sign, on Friday. This means thinking big, expanding your horizons, exploring other philosophies and cultures. Time to trust your own intuition. Your common sense is clashing with someone’s idealism; handle this conflict carefully and avoid big decisions. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 Wait until after this weekend when the Moon moves into your sign from Sunday to Tuesday. This means you will see everything and know how everything works. You may have a plan for success and will obviously speak your mind with persuasive convictions. There are many limitations and rules as to how you behave at this time. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 Turning on the charm this weekend may bring you some special benefits, possibly inclusion in some nice project or a chance to boost your business. You should know that the key to this is to appreciate receiving small blessings and not squander them. A new flow of energy coming with Saturn moving direct frees any previous blockage. PISCES February 20 – March 20 You can plan to have ambition and an effective strategy plan, however, avoid making major decisions over the weekend as the Moon is not favourable to your sign. Sunday afternoon through to Tuesday, is better to accomplish anything including personal and business partnerships. A friend’s good advice is really appreciated now.
ARIES March 21 – April 20 This week starts off with a strong desire to see no stone unturned! The Moon kicks off in the sign of Scorpio and can be useful in getting needed information and discovering leads as to where work opportunities lie. This first quarter Moon is laying seeds for you, seeing the bigger picture. By the weekend explore travel contacts. TAURUS April 21 – May 22 You have got your thinking cap on tight, and as the Moon progresses through the week from Scorpio to Sagittarius to Capricorn, you will see the core issues of a situation and how things work. You may still be having to deal with a financial affair or a partner’s income. The weekend sees Saturn moving direct so beware of criticism. GEMINI May 23 – June 21 You may find yourself more focused this week than you have been in recent days. In fact you could find that your perceptions are acute, so trust that you have a firm grasp on a range of practical concerns. The weekend gives shows that 'honesty is the best policy', but you have to put up with somebody being brutally tactless now. CANCER June 22 – July 22 This week sees you in touch with that which makes you happy. There is plenty of mind power to get to the core issue or to investigate an interesting subject. The weekend may see you impulsive regarding putting things on your credit account, however, avoid more debt if you are on a sinking ship! A caring partner helps your finances.
