Hi Everyone... Since expanding the circulation area of the paper into Maleny, which has proved popular with the Maleny locals who contribute regular news items, I am always conscious of trying to ensure there is a balance of items representing each of the townships. I am also conscious of making sure that the front cover stories get shared around, but I figured that I couldn’t go wrong this week with a photo of one of our iconic mountains. While we may all see them from different vantage points from where we live, I reckon they are definitely a feature that unites us all. At last week’s book launch of ‘The National Heritage Listed Glasshouse Mountains’, the Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace spoke and I think he summed up nicely how many of us feel about ‘our mountains’. When you’ve been away from home, whether that be sitting at Parliament House in Canberra or just having a day out in Brisbane, as you drive up the Bruce Highway and catch that first glimpse of the mountains you get the reassuring feeling of being home. Check out the story about the new book and where you can purchase your very own copy.

Located at Glass House Mountains, Bankfoot House was established in October 1868 by William and Mary Grigor as a lunch stop and staging post for the Cobb & Co route from Brisbane to the Gympie goldfields. Sunshine Coast Council’s Heritage Portfolio Councillor, Rick Baberowski, said the sesquicentenary event marked a significant milestone for Bankfoot House and an opportunity to ponder on how dramatically our lives have changed over those 150 years. “Bankfoot House is an iconic piece of our Sunshine Coast history and I’m looking forward to reminiscing about its great past throughout our celebrations this year,” Cr Baberowski said. “Wandering through the house and around the grounds is like transporting yourself back to the 1800s, and you can see the progression through 3/3 Maleny St (Medical Centre) decades as you explore each room and see more LANDSBOROUGH than 6,500 items in the museum collection. “It is also an opportunity to understand the ancient history and significance of the place from the ancestors Come and chat to our deli team today! of the Indigenous groups that called A/H 0439 741 492 the area home. “On the last Sunday of April, June and August, facebook.com/glasshousecountry&malenynews and at the special event on October 14, we’re

Rotary Pride of Workmanship Awards Last Tuesday the Rotary Club of the Glasshouse Mountains presented three members of Queensland Police Service (QPS) with a ‘Pride of Workmanship’ award at a morning tea event held at Beerwah Police station. Snr Constable Susan Lowndes, Snr Constable Kyron Wolfe and Snr Constable Michael Collins were nominated by their peers and were all awarded trophies specially created by local business TFM Awards. Kay Farrell from the Rotary Club said the awards were a way of recognising the incredible community contribution demonstrated by local

members of the service. “These awards allow Rotary to say thank you to these community minded individuals, as well as providing an opportunity to publicly recognise their dedication to community involvement,” Kay said. Special guests attend a morning tea hosted at the station by QPS. The Rotary Club plans to hold similar award ceremonies later this year for members of the Queensland Ambulance Service and the Rural Fire Service. Beerwah Police Acting Senior Sergeant, Officer in Charge Gary Ricks said: “As police we often see a lot of negativity towards the work we do

and people don’t always appreciate that what we do as police is to make the communities that we serve, our communities, a safe and pleasant place to live, work and raise our children. “So, I believe that these awards are important in that they provide recognition back from the community of what can, at times, appear to be a difficult and even thankless job.” Unfortunately Senior Constable Kyron Wolfe was unable to attend as he had been seconded to the Gold Coast to work as part of the Commonwealth Games. He was recognised for his contribution to road safety. “Kyron is passionate about road safety and the importance of making our community safer by protecting them while they go about their daily business on the roads,” Sergeant Ricks said. Senior Constable Michael Collins was recognised for his work in the area of crime prevention. Michael has been instrumental in keeping the community safe with the focus on crime and drugs in the community. Senior Constable Susan Lowndes, who is the Beerwah Police Stations Community Liaison Officer, was also recognised. Readers may know Susan from her regular columns in Glasshouse Country & Maleny News. Susan is also the Adopt-a-cop for all of the schools within the local area, and she runs the local Bluelight Disco and is the face of QPS at local community events.

Improved mobile phone coverage for Beerwah and Glass House Mountains Beerwah and Glass House Mountains will receive new Telstra mobile telephone towers following the completion of a tendering process to provide federally-funded base stations on the Sunshine Coast. Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace said this is great news for the two local communities. “The lack of mobile phone reception in parts of the Hinterland continues to be one of the most common issues brought to me by local residents,” Mr Wallace said. “Business owners, students, parents and many others in the Hinterland rely on their mobile phone to stay connected. “I’m very pleased to announce that both of these tower projects are now locked in and ready to get underway.” The proposals selected by the Federal Government would ensure that Telstra builds ‘macro base stations’ at both priority locations. Macro base stations are the larger and more powerful type of cell, with larger antennae, mounted on towers or on existing tall buildings. These macro base stations will include a minimum of 12 hours of auxiliary back up power to ensure that they continue to operate in the case of a power outage.

“In November I called on the telcos to give us their best possible tenders, and I am pleased that Telstra have come through with a strong proposal,” Mr Wallace said. “Telstra is Australia’s most used mobile network, so I am glad that as many Hinterland residents as possible will be able to take advantage of these new towers.” The Beerwah tower will provide substantially improved Telstra coverage to the west of the Glass House Mountains National Park, while the Glass House Mountains tower will provide the same for the regions to the east and west of Old Gympie Road. The funding is being allocated under Round 3 of the Federal Government’s Mobile Black Spot Program, and roll out of the towers is scheduled to begin this year. “It’s great to see that our Hinterland community is another step closer to receiving new and improved mobile coverage. I will be in close contact with Telstra to ensure that they get moving on these towers as soon as possible,” Mr Wallace said. The final rollout schedules for the towers will be available on the Telstra website in the coming weeks.

Mayor: No casino licence available for Sunshine Coast Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson has been concerned that in recent months there have been numerous statements made by State and Federal Members of Parliament that Sunshine Coast Council has plans for a casino in the Maroochydore City Centre. Mayor Jamieson said: “I am on the record since 2013 that I believe an integrated resort development would be a great addition to our tourism offering and could provide the means to fund a much-needed convention and exhibition centre in the Maroochydore CBD. “But as I have repeatedly said in public forums and in a range of media responses over the last few months there is no proposal to establish a casino in the Maroochydore City Centre. “I have also repeatedly made it clear that neither Council nor SunCentral Maroochydore Pty Ltd can introduce, establish or approve the development and operation of a casino in the Maroochydore City Centre. “The State Government approves casino licences and the State Government is the approval authority for all development in the Maroochydore City Centre – not Council. “Furthermore, the State Government is only allocating two casino licences and these have been committed to the Gold Coast and Cairns. “Today I am releasing the most recent letter I

As part of Maleny’s River School’s sustainability studies in the first term, the Year 6 class have been investigating ‘The Power of One’. That is the power that one person, class, team, school, business, organisation, country, humanity, heart or mind has to make positive changes in order to protect our planet. As part of this project the class took a look at a number of local businesses in Maleny including IGA, Forest Heart and Hair on Maple to see what sort of sustainable business practices they had implemented. Students Jesse Zipperlen, Obi Muller, Tynan Murray and Jacob Samorowski were impressed to learn the following facts and were keen to share with GC&M News readers some of the interesting things that they discovered. Some of the things you may not know that Maleny IGA already do: - They use the heat that comes off the refrigeration motors to preheat water and the shop during winter. - The IGA does not waste out of date fruit and vegetables, but give it to farmers who then feed it to pigs! - Did you know that the IGA has 200 solar panels? Isn’t that amazing! These solar panels produce about 10% of all the electricity they use.

Maleny IGA owner Rob Outridge visited the River School and was interviewed by the Year 6 class about their sustainability practices prior to the students touring the business - They also have beehives on their roof, not just for the honey but also so the bees can pollinate flowers and trees around Maleny. - IGA tries its best to buy as much local produce as possible to reduce food miles and currently estimates that about 15% of their stock is locally sourced. - From July 1 single use plastic bags will be banned in Queensland, however IGA already provides recycled cardboard boxes for your groceries, so make sure to use this alternative. - The IGA is investigating and using sugar cane trays to replace Styrofoam trays and some plastic packaging. We encourage customers to choose foods that have the least amount of packaging and to be conscious of making choices that are good for the planet.

Community News Rocky Creek rocked over Easter

The Rocky Creek Scout Camp on Old Gympie Road at Landsborough sustained some serious damage in last December’s devastating storm. However, following months of hard work by the camp management and support by community members, the site found normality again, just in time to host the ‘Kiwi Woggle’, the longest running Scout competition camp in Queensland for 11-to-14-year old boys and girls. This major event ran across the four-day Easter long weekend and included numerous fun, challenging and entertaining activities, competitions and surprises for those who attended. A special highlight was the concert where local ‘The X Factor’ finalists, ‘The Dennis

Sisters’, donated their time and performed. Some of the activities on offer were geocaching and navigation challenges, ropes challenge course, mountain biking, metal sculpting, rock climbing, raft building, abseiling and archery.

Sunshine Coast Council in partnership with Biosecurity Queensland is supporting a community based coordinated Wild Dog Baiting Program. Failure to control wild dogs can result in livestock losses, attacks on domestic pets and the loss of native fauna. Landholders have a legislative responsibility to control declared pests on their land and participation in this program is an effective way to help meet this responsibility. The Wild Dog Baiting Program will be held throughout Bald Knob, Beerburrum, Beerwah, Belli Park, Bells Creek, Cambroon, Coochin Creek, Coolabine, Conondale, Crohamhurst, Curramore, Eerwah Vale, Elaman Creek, Gheerulla, Kenilworth, Kidaman Creek, Landsborough, Peachester, Reesville, Valdora, Witta, Yandina Creek areas from 23 April to 25 May 2018.

Graham and Rowena met locally through their involvement in the harp workshops at the Maleny Celtic Winter School about five years ago and have been playing together ever since. They have enjoyed performing regularly together at numerous events and gatherings across the Hinterland, Brisbane and overseas. Both classically trained, the couple share a longstanding involvement in musical arts and they bring a wide range of influences to their work. Their performance repertoire is reflective of the incredibly broad history of the harp, with pieces ranging from medieval to baroque times and numerous European cultures including Irish and Welsh traditions. They create unique arrangements of the above, as well as composing their own original pieces. They have recently recorded a new CD of original and traditional pieces for harps and classical guitar which will be available at the concert. Entry to the concert is $10 at the door. Enquiries to Graham on 0418 159 365.

Lest We Forget this Anzac Day in Glasshouse Country and Maleny Anzac Day is now only two weeks away and once again the planning is well underway for the many services and marches that are held across the Glasshouse Country and Maleny News readership area. Last week I caught up with one of the thousands of locals who will be out and about on the day, Keith Chay from Glass House Mountains, who would like to encourage others to come along to local service and acknowledge the efforts of those that have served in the military. Keith and his wife Kathy and their three children Lachlan, Alicia and Duncan, who all attended Glass House Mountains State School and Beerwah State High School, have all served in the Navy, except for Alicia who was in the Air Force for eight years and now lives in Adelaide. Lachlan is still in the Navy and has served for 18 years and is based in Perth. Duncan, who served eight years in the Navy, is now living at Bli Bli. Keith proudly told me about what a great experience it was for him to be able to participate in the events at Glass House Mountains with Duncan by his side last year for the first time and to have his grandchildren there as well. If you plan to attend an event, at right is the list of what is happening locally on the day.

Origins of Beerburrum State School The Beerburrum Soldier Settlement was an Australian Commonwealth Government funded, Queensland State Government administered effort to provide land to repatriated servicemen who had served in the Australian and Imperial armed forces during World War One. The Settlement was established in 1916 and ran until terminated during the late 1920s. At Beerburrum it was hoped to settle some four hundred families on pineapple and citrus farms.

On April 22, 1918, a school was established to cater for the children of the families expected to settle, with 21 students attending on the first day. However, the official opening of the school was not performed until the first day of the school year in 1919. The Honourable J. M. Hunter, Vice President of the Executive Council, performed the ceremony at the school. The original school building had one room and because galvanized iron was in short supply the roof was made of shingles. It was built on the “open air” design – low walls, with canvas blinds reaching the roof, and these blinds could be removed in summer, allowing the easy circulation of air.

As first Head Teacher, the Department chose Mr Thomas Hobgen, himself a returned soldier with considerable teaching experience. Mr Hobgen took up a farm and began growing pineapples as well as caring for the educational needs of the growing settlement. Enrolments at the school increased rapidly in the early 1920s, necessitating extensions to the original school, which had been built to accommodate only 30 children. With attendances approaching 100, a new building was added, and a Pupil Teacher, Miss Margaret Isabella McPhie, was appointed to the school. During the 1920s confidence in the whole idea of a ‘Soldiers Settlement’ began to wane, as it became clear that many of the men lacked both the expertise and the capital necessary to make a success of farming. It became clear, too, that in surveying the settlement, farms had often been made too small to sustain a family. A Tobacco Growing Scheme was also introduced in 1933 but was unfortunately abandoned owing to a fungal disease called Blue Mould which flourished in the damp air. Enrolment at the school fluctuated over this period, achieving greater stability in the years after 1945 when industries such as forestry, farming of pineapples, poultry and small crops such as chokos became economically viable. A number of these successful settlers were those who stayed on the land after the Soldier Settlement collapsed and some of their descendants are still living in the region.

POLICE BEAT Back to school I hope everyone enjoyed the Easter break even with the rather wet weather we have been having. Just a quick reminder about observing school zone speed limits whether you are just passing through or at drop off and pick up. I encourage everyone to be courteous and patient on the roads, but nowhere more so than around schools at drop off and pick up times. Everyone needs to remember that it is only a few seconds difference in your life to slow down or let someone through. I’ve seen some pretty crazy manoeuvres in the mad rush of school pick up and it is often simply luck that no one is injured. Please slow down and keep an extra look out for the little people. Number plate security Beerwah Police still have non-reversible screws available for most vehicles. The screws are available to pick up at the counter on Tuesday mornings from 8am to 11am from our lovely Volunteers in Policing, Vikki and Brian. The screws are generously supplied by our local Neighbourhood Watch group to help reduce the incidence of number plate theft. Number plate theft is often part of other offences as offenders will steal the number plates in order to disguise vehicles for use in the commission of other offences, including stealing and drug offences. The non-reversible screws can be installed with a normal flat head screw driver but require a special tool to remove. By making it more difficult to steal your number plates it also makes it more difficult to commit other offences, so drop in and pick up a set. Blue Light Our next Blue Light is on Friday May 25 at the Beerwah Community Hall next to the Library from 7pm to 9pm. We had a great turn out at the first one for the year which was a huge success. We were so close to breaking our attendance record. Looking forward to seeing you all there, bring your friends and let’s beat our record.

The number one question we get asked at this time of year is... “Can I still lay turf in Autumn?” The answer is YES! Autumn is such a great time of the year to lay turf. It makes perfect sense. The cooler days, mean less evaporation and stress on the plant and subsequently you. There is still plenty of warmth in the soil for the roots to take off and that’s exactly what turf loves. So don’t wait! Give the office a call today and speak to Jess or Jo to arrange your new lawn or a measure & quote. Call us on 1300 781 175 or Visit our website www.goturf.com.au

System upgrade for Sunshine Coast Libraries Sunshine Coast Libraries are looking forward to an innovative system upgrade that will provide improved services to customers. The new system, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) – a combination of radio-frequency and microchip based technology – will be installed across libraries from April. This system will make borrowing and returning items a simpler process. It allows customers to borrow or return multiple library items in just a few quick steps. We’ll also install security gates to help keep track of our collections as items move in and out of the library. There will be minimal disruption to library

services while the new system is installed. Our library opening hours will remain the same. Once the system is up and running there will be changes to library return locations. Items will need to be returned inside the library during business hours. The new system means library staff can spend less time processing items and more time assisting customers. They can help you find the information you’re looking for and provide suggestions on items throughout our vast library collection. To keep up to date with the changes and to find out more about upcoming events and activities, subscribe to Library eNews at Sunshine Coast Libraries website.

Exciting times for Hinterland Accounting Services - Introducing new partners Leisa and Michelle are pleased to announce that Brett and Dee Piercy and Melissa Jones are new partners of Hinterland Accounting Services. Leisa said since establishing the business in 2012 they have had such wonderful support from the local community and have continued to experience substantial growth. “We hope that with the introduction of the new partners, we will be able to provide the same great service to you all and it will be beneficial to everybody,” Leisa said. “Our dedicated team of smiling faces will ensure that you are still our number one priority. “We know that they will be an asset to our business and be a big part of our continued success. “Michelle and I are staying on in the business, however at some reduced hours. “We are sure that you will find the transition for Brett, Dee and Melissa will run smoothly for our loyal and valued clients. “Please pop in if you are around the office area to say hi, to make sure everyone feels at home in the new and improved work environment,” she said.

Brett Piercy – Accountant and Dee Piercy – Admin Manager

After settling their young family on the Sunshine Coast, Brett and Dee are excited about beginning the next stage of their lives as Accountant and Administration Manager at Hinterland Accounting Services. Having grown up in a farming community in Tasmania before spending some time in the city, Brett is really happy to be back in a regional area where he can work closely with business owners and become part of the local community. Brett is keen to start meeting and working with Hinterland Accounting Services clients and he is really pleased to have Dee taking over the administration side of things for the practice which will allow him additional time to spend with clients. The couple met in an accounting practice where they both worked many years ago and are looking forward to working together again alongside all the team at Hinterland Accounting Services. Brett said they really feel like the staff and the clients are going to be a great fit for them and they already love Beerwah and the surrounding hinterland area. “Beerwah will see strong growth over the next decade and we are here to help and assist locals wherever we can,” Brett said.

Melissa Jones – Accountant

Melissa is finally living her dream of working and living on the Sunshine Coast and in particularly Glasshouse Country. Originally making the move to Nambour back in 1989 with her parents and brother, Melissa completed her university studies at QUT’s Nambour campus. During the next 25 years she moved back and forth to Sydney taking up a variety of career opportunities, however always hoping to one day to permanently reside on the Sunny Coast. Back in 2000, Melissa, an avid horse rider, fell in love with Mooloolah and bought a home there. However she and her husband and young family only made the move permanently five years ago. Melissa and her family have been actively involved in the local area and the community through employment, various clubs and volunteer work and have grown to love the community lifestyle in particular in the Hinterland. Melissa said that she is very much looking forward to working with the great staff and the locals, many of whom she already knows. “Having predominantly worked in Tax Compliance roles across many industries and sectors, I am really much looking forward to the new venture with Brett and Dee, and working in the office of Hinterland Accounting Services with Leisa and Michelle,” she said.

Community Groups Bushland working bee Contributed by Gordon Reddek The Coochin Creek Bushland Group will hold its next working bee on Tuesday April 17 from 7.30am to 10.30am(ish).

This month we will be targeting exotic creepers that are invading the fringes of the Environmental Reserve close to the rock holes. The recent long spate of wet weather has encouraged very aggressive growth of these creepers, so we have a lot of work to do. Anybody interested in conservation work and willing to give us a hand is most welcome to join us. The Coochin Creek Bushland Group is part of the Sunshine Coast Nature Conservation Program. Participation is free and tea is provided during the working bee. Participants are advised to wear boots, a long sleeved shirt, long pants, sun hat, and to carry a water bottle. All equipment required, including tick repellent, will be supplied. We will start by meeting at the gate to the Caralan Park, which is at the corner of Emma Place and Caralan Way in Beerwah. For more information please contact Gordon on 0406 638 544.

Pilgrims’ Way at View Club Contributed by Janet Kitchin This month’s lunch meeting included an interesting talk on The Pilgrims’ Way in Spain by Marilyn Cullen. Two new members Kerry McDonald and Kay Smith were also presented with their badges. Our next lunch meeting will incorporate the Zone Conference and will be held New member Kerry McDonald at Maroochydore Surf Club on April 17 at 10.30 for an 11am start. Anyone who would like to join us or come along to one of our functions would be very welcome. For more information please ring Lynda on 5494 7875 or Trish on 5493 0026. Sporting ancestors?

If ‘variety is the spice of life’ then members of the Caloundra Family History Research have spiced up their meeting, with a diverse range of topics. Their March guest speaker was Joye Dempsey, a performance poet, author and historian, who shared some of her war poems and short stories with the group. From war to sport – at the next meeting on

Thursday April 19 at 1.30pm the guest speaker will be Shauna Hicks, an author and genealogist. Shauna’s topic is ‘Sporting Ancestors: Everyone has them.’ Members and visitors are welcome to attend this meeting to hear one of our regular and revered speakers. Meetings are held at the Caloundra Family History Rooms, located at the Sunshine Coast Turf Club Precinct, Gate 2, Pierce Avenue, Meridan Plains.

Hinterland Kids Instead of plastic wrap use Sandwich Huggers

Sandwich Huggers are a great product that makes life easier for parents who have the job of packing lunches. It is a reusable, washable sandwich wrap measuring 30cm x 30cm. It’s made from cotton with waterproof food-safe PUL fabric, with velcro at four corners that can be adjusted to fit different sized sandwiches. Landsborough local, Liz Harris, who runs her Sustainable You and Me small business from home, selling products on-line and via market stalls, says she has gotten great feedback from customers who have purchased them. Liz says all you need to do to clean them, is simply wipe off crumbs with a damp cloth, or put in your washing up in the sink or in the washing machine, fastening the velcro to protect other washed items. So why not ditch the cling wrap and show your sandwich some love with a Sanger Hug for only $14? Check out her Facebook page/shop to buy one today!

Kids got on their bikes

Contributed by Sally Joyce National Ride2School Day prompted much excitement for the children at Peachester State School. What a lovely sight it was to see almost 50% of our students flying towards the school’s front gate, smiling, challenged and puffing along on their bikes. Two supervised drop-off points were arranged so that children who can’t normally ride longer distances, or who travel on busy roads, had the opportunity to ride safely to school, whilst children who do live closer were given the security and experience of riding together with their friends. The event proved so popular at Peachester State School that students have asked to do it more often. Teachers and parents love this idea, with the school in preparation to make this healthy event a regular occurrence, helping our school community to be more active. Thanks to our parent helpers and the National Ride2School Day initiative.

No fuss meals for fussy eaters

FREE TRIAL Classes Saturday Mornings at Landsborough Primary School

There were plenty of challenges to navigate, from tunnels and balance beams to swing bridges, a trampoline and a rolling mat. Every one of the children completed 10 Grace laps of the course, with smiles on their dials the entire time, to raise money for new resources. Once the last little athlete crossed the finish line, they shared a special morning tea with their adult helpers.

Getting food on the table can be a major stress for parents. This is especially true if your child is fussy about the foods that they are willing to eat. Children develop food preferences at different rates and will benefit from your patience along this journey. However, here are a few ideas to make meals times easier for yourself and your fussy eater! 1. Eat together away from TV. Children model their eating habits from parents. Watching you eat a wide variety of foods sends the message that this food is safe for them to try one day too. 2. Offer at least one ‘safe food’. It’s a myth that children won’t restrict their food intake due to fussy eating behaviours. Take the stress off potential scarcity at meal times by putting at least one ‘safe’ food on the table for them

A procession of bikes on their way to school

to choose from. Bland foods like potato, rice and pasta are examples of foods that feel safe for most children. 3. Allow children to serve themselves. Your role as a parent is to choose what’s on the menu at meal times. A child’s role is to determine how much and what they’d like to eat from this menu. 4. Let children play with food. It’s a way for them to explore new foods and make them feel safe. 5. Repeat exposures. On average, it takes eight to 19 exposures to a novel food before fussy eaters will accept a new flavour. Understandably, many parents give up before this threshold! Even putting food on the table for children to look at or play with can encourage acceptance of new foods over time.

Kali is a Dietitian who advocates a ‘Non Diet’ approach to food and wellness. She regularly offers free community cooking classes and food events in collaboration with Maleny IGA. www.myfoodculture.com. @MFCmyfoodculture info@myfoodculture.com 18

Sustainability is always in focus Glass House Early Education Centre coordinator Ange Hardy says a key area of focus for 2018 is to continue to provide an environmentally sustainable service. Under Ange’s direction and with the full support of management and team members, the Centre is strongly committed to continuing to minimise its carbon footprint. “It is vitally important that we adopt sustainable practices now so that we can help look after our future generations. We feel strongly about the environment and are committed to sharing a sustainable future,” explains Ange. All staff members, children and their families are encouraged to learn more about sustainable practices, with the importance of reusing and recycling actively promoted.

Over the last 18 months a number of exciting initiatives to become ‘greener’ and more sustainable have been developed. Some of these initiatives include the installation of solar panels, a move towards using less plastic toys and products at the centre, the creation of a native edible garden and a monthly ‘green day’

Glasshouse Country & Maleny News

to help promote environmental awareness and sustainability to name a few. Realising how much goes into landfill, a recycled clothes swap station has been established as a small way for the Centre to help make a big difference. A section has also been put aside to encourage a ‘book swap’ area and families and staff members are encouraged to bring in unwanted items to be appreciated by others. Various aspects of sustainability are incorporated into everyday Centre life. For example, the Centre runs the majority of its power off solar electricity and for the older children, each room group has a ‘lights and air-conditioner’ monitor who is responsible for ensuring that these resources are turned off at the end of the day. Recently the Centre was visited by a Sunshine Coast worm farm supplier who instructed the children on the benefits of composting and how to care for worms. Last year Ange and staff members engaged with the local environment group GMAN (Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network) to help launch their native ‘sensory’ garden. Now children are enjoying an outdoor play area filled with all local native plants and species as well as access to educational programs which has encouraged

families to discover and support local ecosystems and source and grow sustainable bush tucker plants. “Our kids just love growing things in our pallet garden and we are so pleased that our native garden is underway. We have so many ideas about how to enrich this space for the children – we are really keen to establish a vibrant sustainable garden which will also be able to support our local fauna,” says Ange. Late last year the Centre unveiled their hugely popular ‘Pirate Ship’ made out of recycled materials and the Centre’s ‘pallet gardens’ are another example of how repurposed materials can form an enriching and useful purpose.

Living - Arts Arts Council team well credentialed As well as being the Maleny Arts Council’s program director, Peter Lavery was elected as president at their recent AGM following the retirement of Jennifer Radbourne who had successfully guided the local group for the previous five years. Peter comes to his new role with considerable credentials, having been involved with the theatre for most of his life. He began his career as an actor working for the Queensland Theatre Company, La Boite, TN, and Sam Wannamaker’s Globe in London. Moving into academia at QUT, Peter became Head of Drama, then the Academy of the Arts, and finally Director of QUT Precincts. This role involved development and programming and being responsible for the cultural assets of the university including theatres, galleries, Old Government House, public art, and event venues. After his retirement as Emeritus Professor he came to Maleny with wife, Jacqueline, a lecturer in drama education before becoming a botanical artist. The members elected Kerry Millner to the position of secretary. Kerry also had a background in theatre especially with Brisbane Arts Theatre and La Boite. She was involved in musical theatre and sang with the Brisbane Chorale, and in Hobart, before taking up a commercial career. In Maleny she sings with Tapestry.

Kerry Milner, John Marsden and Peter Lavery The third member of the executive is long standing treasurer John Marsden, whose background, predictably, is in accounting and banking, but also with a strong interest in theatre and music. He is a member of the Maleny Players and the Maleny Singers. “I think we have an extraordinary team to take the Maleny Arts Council forward,” Peter said. “The rest of the committee are well known director of the Maleny Singers, Margaret Taylor, editor Jane Todd, former actor and journalist Judith Ross-Smith doing PR, and we have the support of Christopher Ross-Smith, founder and head of the Theatre Studies Department at UNE and professional actor and director, as artistic advisor.”

will allow the gallery to offer a wider variety of programs, events and workshops. Gallery curator Hamish Sawyer said with any gallery exhibition, public programs such as artist talks and creative workshops are a great way to explore the inspiration behind the artist’s work and give workshop participants the opportunity to develop new skills. Kids and families get the chance to experience The Artroom at ‘Art Attack’ which runs from 11am to 1pm on the first and third Saturday of every month. It’s a gold coin donation per person to participate and no bookings are required. The gallery renovations also include increased retail space for visitors to buy beautiful, local artisan products at the Gallery Store and a dedicated space to house Sunshine Coast Art Collection works and works on loan for gallery exhibitions. For more details on all of the exhibitions, programs and workshops at the gallery visit gallery.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au.

Following their successful ‘Christmas Trilogy’ the Maleny Players will be presenting ‘3 One Act Plays’ at the Maleny Playhouse on Friday April 27 at 7pm, Saturday April 28 at 2pm and 7pm and finally on Sunday April 29 at 2pm. Featured in the line-up will be ‘Unsinkable’ by local playwright Andrew Wallace, as well as ‘The Proposal’ by Chekov and ‘The Last Panto at Little Grimley’ by David Tristan which provides a comic insight into the world of amateur dramatics. Local playwright Andrew Wallace has written around fifteen one-act plays and comic sketches, eight of which have been performed in this region since he retired here five years ago. Andrew’s very clever play, ‘Unsinkable’ takes place in present day Australia where parents Angela and Ron are exasperated by their teenage son, who is obsessed with the Titanic. The boy cannot understand why others are not interested in the encyclopaedic knowledge he loves to share. Andrew believes some stories still work best on stage and sees great potential in amateur theatre and that, in an era of screen entertainment, professional drama is confined to big cities, expensive, and sometimes too ‘avant-garde’ for most. But amateur talent in regional areas can be mobilised to provide the magic of live performances. The Players are always looking for new members. Their play readings are on the last Thursday of each month at 7pm at the Playhouse. Those interested are welcome to come along to the Playhouse and meet the Players. Tickets for the ‘3 One Act Plays’ are $20 for adults, $10 for children under 12, and are on sale at Imelda’s on Maple and online at www. malenyplayers.org. For further information please contact Rob on 0418 785 967.

Celebrate the beauty of timber at Maleny Wood Expo The Maleny Wood Expo, now in its 22nd year, has become Queensland’s premier timber and wood exhibition. For three days over the Queensland Labour Day long weekend of May 5, 6 and 7 the Maleny Showgrounds will be chocka-block full of the sounds, smells and visual delights of all things timber. There is an amazing diversity of handcrafted timber products on show and for sale, ranging from fine furniture, musical instruments and tiny treasures like boxes, bowls, toys and spoons, to chainsaw sculptures and outdoor settings. There’s also the ever popular freshly slabbed timber to take home for your own project. The Expo is the place to go to find the best quality tools and materials for wood crafting all in the one place, as well as the opportunity to talk with the experts. Maleny Wood Expo is an alcohol-free family event with something for people of all ages. Younger Wood Expo attendees can make a handcrafted Mother’s Day gift in a free workshop hosted by the Blackall Range Woodcrafters’ Guild and the Maleny Men’s Shed, and there will even be some simple projects for the very little people under the age of five with no bookings required.

Kids of all ages can learn from experienced woodcrafters and use real tools to try their hand at furniture making at the ‘Cool Stool School’. Aspiring woodworkers can get some hands-on woodworking experience under skilled supervision using traditional tools and techniques and make their very own stool to take home. Book now online for popular workshops including woodworking for women, hand-held woodcarving, spoon carving and making a milking stool. Why not try your hand at creating a didgeridoo or a boomerang? The Maleny Wood Expo is a celebration of beautiful native timbers and their sustainable uses, showcased through the craft of local, national and international wood artisans. This year, special international guest artisan Zina Burloiu from Romania will be imparting the traditional skills of chip carving. Zina is internationally acknowledged as the premier exponent of her craft. She is variously known as a traditional Romanian chip carver and spoon maker, a creative decorative artist, and a sculptor who exhibits internationally. She has been teaching the beautiful technique of chip carving around the world for 20 years and her workshops are always extremely popular. A fully qualified engineer, Zina uses knives that she makes herself to create her intricate pieces. She will also be bringing these specially created knives to her workshops for participants to use and purchase if desired. Of course, there’s the Landcare Barbeque and tasty local food, great local musicians, street entertainment, a wide selection of native plants and the multi-draw Expo raffle.

You Said It Council development issues

The answer to the issue raised in the GC&M News, March 28 by the ‘No Fuel Opposite Our School Ever Group’ as to how the Planning Scheme Zoning for the service station site is now code assessable is quite simple. It appears the Sunshine Coast Council have merely extended the code assessment process that applies to Residential development to Commercial development. The Sunshine Coast Council uses the Queensland Government Right to Information Act 2009 which allows the Council to keep code assessable development applications secret i.e., the resident(s) are totally, and I emphasise totally, excluded from the process of code assessable developments. Other Australian states do not have legislation that excludes and disadvantages its residents in this way. No other Council in the surrounding area disadvantages its residents more by abdicating its responsibility in implementing and administering a building code that totally disadvantages the resident. Terrifying experience

Driving home from the beach on Easter Sunday with my husband and two small children, we had one of the more terrifying experiences of my life. As we travelled along Steve Irwin Way towards Glass House Mountains, a “hippie van” pulled out of the zoo exit and my husband amazingly managed to control the car so we missed the van. We were doing the appropriate speed limit, it was a clear day, it would be hard to believe they hadn’t seen us. It honestly was like they felt they had the right of way. Or that they seriously misjudged the speed of the road and the power of their van. This left

me incredibly shaken thinking of what might have been for my family that day. This then turned to frustration and anger as I know that there was a fatal accident at that spot not too long ago and as I drive this road daily to work I’ve seen similar near misses. To be honest, I am not sure what the solution is. Smarter, more careful drivers are probably a naive outlook. Perhaps traffic lights are required like we recently got at the Glass House intersection, however I know how long this took to come to fruition. I have written to our local MP asking for his thoughts on this and as a local community member I’d like to remind everyone to take care always on the roads. Kathryn R Glass House Mountains

Council fails again

Congratulations must go to our local council for again failing us. The recent resurfacing of Old Gympie Road and Lindeman Road at Beerwah is an example of how badly they are using our rates and how they do not respect our health and safety. Both roads were given a very light coating of bitumen then sprinkled with a layer of gravel that was too much for the bitumen and now is a hazard for motorists and cyclists who use it. not to mention the number of chipped and broken windshields that will occur from this haphazard disaster. The new painted lines were laid down thicker than the bitumen but they are being obscured by the loose gravel that is constantly being thrown by the vehicles. To top it all off we will be paying more for rates again. George Saliba Beerwah

Beerwah State School intersection

Mr Wallace, our Federal Member of Parliament, recently sent out a form to everyone in the Fisher Electorate inviting suggestions that would improve our local area and any hot spots that could be identified as being problematic in the immediate area. I have previously identified a dangerous problem to Mr Wallace, however the reply I received from the first letter I had sent him was not what I expected. I feel it was put in the ‘too hard basket’ and passed over. So once again I will put it forward: the Beerwah State School intersection is a dangerous situation waiting to happen. Mr Wallace, I have sent you photos of cars in front of my car, and also behind me, in both directions at a time when there was a continuous line trying to get through the intersection. This was during school time, and people were taking unnecessary risks to get where they were going. Children are leaving the school grounds at this time. This is not a safe situation and someone needs to hang their head in shame, for there will be accidents in the future. Sandy Davis Beerwah

AUTUMN/WINTER 2018

From your councillor Since my last newsletter we have had a drought, unprecedented heatwaves and nally some good, soaking rains. Whoever said you couldn’t get it all on the Sunshine Coast was wrong — climate change or no climate change, 2018 is going to be an eventful year.

What’s being talked about in our community? A dog off-leash area

Park the bark seminar

After many requests, I am working with the community and council staff to provide an off-leash area for Mooloolah dog owners.

Barking dogs are an issue for many hinterland residents so I encourage any dog owners to come along to the free Park the Bark seminar at Kureelpa Hall on Thursday, 19 April at 6.30pm.

Council is liaising with the Pony Club to work out how an off-leash area could work when the park is being used for public events, including the MooFest and Mooloolah Rodeo.

The seminar will be presented by well-known animal behaviourist Dr Cam Day. You’ll learn why dogs bark, hear solutions to ‘when I am home’ and ‘when I am away’ barking and get some tips on how to reduce this unwanted behaviour. There are only 100 seats so booking by phone 07 5475 7272 or council’s website is a must.

Rural roads update Note from the Mayor Engaging with our community is a vital part of the work our council undertakes every day. Community engagement can take many forms, including public meetings with councillors, feedback on local issues, talking to council staff, online surveys through to large scale community consultation exercises. The goal is the same — to achieve the best overall result for our community as we work towards our vision of being Australia’s healthy, smart, creative region. Sometimes issues we discuss with the community do not have simple answers. Often council is faced with balancing varied – and sometimes competing — community interests in coming up with a solution. The recent verge parking and verge gardens debates are a great example of where there are many facets to the issue. Our council believes it is always important that we fully canvass all of these before considering any potential changes in policy. I invite you to see the range of issues and topics on which we are currently seeking your feedback visit council’s website at www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and have your say.

Any news articles from me would not be complete without an update on the Rural Roads Program. The Lower Order Unsealed Roads Upgrade Plan 2016-2026 has been adopted by council. What this means in simple terms is that residents on roads that do not carry a lot of traffic and are not ‘through roads’ can partner with council to bring a minimum seal forward by personally contributing towards the costs. The 2018/19 budget will continue to support the sealing of high order rural roads. We will see the completion of the sealing of both sections of McGilchrist Road, Eudlo. I am happy to discuss this program with any residents should you wish to understand the policy further. Please call my office on 07 5441 8043.

The heatwave conditions across the Coast alerted council to reinforce the need for our communities to be vigilant regarding children and pets being left in vehicles. We received a record number of complaints for both, leading to council launching a strong awareness campaign. Hats off to our Disaster Management Team, SES and other Emergency Services, along with the thousands of volunteers who left the comfort of their homes to serve our community and help those most vulnerable. Now, with the much awaited winter months looming, the new issues to tackle will be wild dogs, feral deer and other wild animals. I look forward to keeping you posted on our ever changing hinterland scene. Cr Jenny McKay

Mooloolah Recreation Park is a possible site, but needs careful consideration as it is also used by the neighbouring Pony Club and for recreational cricket.

During the drought hinterland residents were challenged by water shortages and extreme dust from unsealed roads. Discussions were held with Unitywater for more standpipes to help water carriers deliver water more efficiently. As a result Unitywater proposed construction of a smaller facility in a central place on the Blackall Range where individual households could collect a nominal amount of water free of charge.

Division 1 - Sunshine Coast

Lots to update you with this month! I hope you had a great Easter break and a big thank you to the community for turning out at the official opening of the Glass House Mountains District Park. The Glasshouse Country townships have an increasing number of young families, and also need to become stronger tourist destinations, and our exceptional new district park will help add to our area’s appeal as great family-friendly destinations. I recently attended the official opening of the new Palmwoods town square which I’m happy to report illustrates the depth of experience and skill that council’s place making team now have in working with the community. If you are interested in the Landsborough Place Making Master Plan, plan a trip to Palmwoods as a good excuse to see a recent new plan for another country town and bring your ideas back for Landsborough!

Reporting maintenance From time to time, you may notice maintenance that needs attention, e.g. mowing, pot holes, lights out of order, vandalism or general suggestions for improvement. In a region as large as ours, residents are the best eyes and ears for your council, and if you do see something, report it as soon as possible. It’s a simple phone call to council on 5475 7272 or emailmail@ sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au. Council has a good mechanism in providing a reference number to track the action taken in response and the process works well. If for some reason it doesn’t, this is where I can step in and investigate. Thanks to the many residents who do report things they see, I’d love to see many more pitch in.

Memorials I have recently received feedback regarding council’s rigorous process for memorialising family members. I am always pleased to offer help in sensitive situations like these and I have asked for advice on if there can be additional avenues to memorialise members of the community, which hopefully could also become a simpler process for the community.

Landsborough dog off-leash area Following community feedback, work has commenced on a brand new dog off-leash park and off-street car park at Caloundra Street, Landsborough. This park will provide an enjoyable space for the exercise of dogs of all sizes and is scheduled for completion by mid-July 2018 (weather dependent). Stay tuned for the opening celebration!

Glass House Meet and Greet On Friday April 20 between 2pm and 4pm I will be at the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre in Ryan Street. I always enjoy making my way around the division for these sessions, but can I remind you that I can be contacted at any time if you have a discussion point that you’d like to raise. State Member for Caloundra What the Waste Tax could mean for Queenslanders You may have read or heard about the reintroduction of a waste “levy” by the current Labor Government last month, and you may be wondering “how will this affect me?” Understandably, the circumstances around this new levy are confusing as we still don’t know how much it will be, when it will start or how it will be applied. It is no wonder that so many are confused. First, let’s call this ‘levy’ by its real name which is a Tax. After being scraped by the previous LNP Government in 2012, this tax has been reintroduced as a means to stop NSW construction companies bringing their waste to Southern Queensland dumps but, rather than addressing the issue at the site, the dumps, this tax will roll on to all Queenslanders in some manner. Labor have said that this will not have a direct impact on Queenslanders. The Premier promises that families “will not face increased costs from this levy” as it is businesses being taxed by the tonne for dumping of waste. They are forgetting that Queenslanders are business owners too. These taxes are not just directed at big, multinational companies that can absorb the cost. All businesses will be hit by the taxes including family-run shops in the tourism and hospitality industries, local construction companies, local manufacturers and our farmers – people who are your neighbours. They will be hit with another tax at the time when many small businesses are already doing it tough. According to the Housing Industry Association, builders will be hit harder to get rid of waste and that cost will be passed on to new homeowners, costing Queenslanders an extra $2,000 to build a new home. Your beloved local fish and chip shop and other restaurants will pay more to safely dispose of the oil and grease-based waste. Community outreach charities will suffer if they try to dispose of donated items that are not suitable to pass on to their beneficiaries. This tax will mean that farmers here on the Sunshine Coast will pay more when properly disposing of agricultural pesticides and other chemicals. They will pay more to do the right thing. A new waste levy will hit every Queenslanders' hip-pocket just to stop a problem that affects a handful of dumps in the south-east. While I agree that we need to stop taking in another State’s rubbish, Queenslanders shouldn’t be punished for something Councils have the power to stop locally. caloundra@parliament.qld.gov.au Search us on Facebook Mark McArdle MP

Keeping patients on their feet Falls are a major health issue in our community, with around 30% of adults aged over 65 years experiencing at least one fall per year. In Queensland, 36 older people are admitted to hospital due to falls every single day, yet many falls can be prevented. As part of Queensland Health’s April No Falls campaign, Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health is promoting its comprehensive falls prevention strategy, developed by the Allied Health team. Falls are not an inevitable part of ageing and there are a number of positive steps people can take to remain active, independent and on their feet. Tips on what you can do to prevent falls: • Some medications can increase your chances of experiencing a falls related injury. It’s important to regularly review your medications with your treating doctor. • Regular exercise can improve strength, balance, and power and therefore help prevent falls. Walking, swimming, yoga, Pilates, and tai chi

are all good options. • Speak to your health professional to see what exercises are best. • Eating a healthy diet and drinking plenty of water can ensure that your body is correctly hydrated and has the right amount of nutrients to sustain a healthy lifestyle. • Make an appointment with your local nutritionist/dietitian for more information and assessment. • Remove clutter from your home and ensure that you have the right equipment in the home so that you stay safe. Consider buying non slip socks. • If you have other chronic health conditions understand the risks these can have on falls and have regular reviews with your treating doctor. • Spend some time outdoors; this can boost your energy levels, improve your mood, and boost your vitamin D intake. Living - Music Home town kick off for album and tour

Maleny’s Col Finley is celebrating 25 years in the music industry with a home town launch of his sixth album, ‘The Collective’, a locally-recorded 25-track album, this Friday, April 13, at the Maleny RSL. Col is one of the pioneer independent singer-songwriters, showing a depth, substance and character that is rarely seen with several decades of music under his belt. He is one of Australia’s longest-standing independent recording artists in today’s country music industry. Col is also very proactive with his role in the local community and music industry, creating opportunities for singer/songwriters, bands and performers to come to the Hinterland to perform. He has previously helped raise over $25,000 for local mental health and has coached the local Under 9 Bushrangers rugby team. Col is genuinely proud of his new album and proud to have shared it with Maleny and some very talented locals. This week, Col will be filming his video clip to the first single ‘Coffee Goes Cold’, a song/story about missing the chance to have that coffee and catch up with friends and family before it’s too late. Award-winning producer Michael Bryers will be filming this video in iconic locations across the Hinterland as a build up to the album launch and ‘The Don’t Let the Coffee Go Cold’ tour on Friday night. The upcoming tour will see Col cover most of the east coast, outback Australia and a 14 day tour of the USA. Join Col and guests, Sunshine Coast based talents The Denise Sisters, Indy Artist of the Year Will Day, local Maleny artist Nellie Finley and international recording artists Chris Staff Band on Friday night from 7pm. Tickets are available at the door. It’s $20 for adults and kids are free. with Dr Michael Whiticker

Music Today The Planting Festival

The Planting Festival will be held at Woodford this year from Friday May 4 to Sunday May 6. This will be my third Planting and it has become one of my favourite annual events. The music is going to be good, it is after all a Woodford festival, but it is the extras that lift it for me as a “must attend”. The environment is the big winner, with presentations galore on the hour by inspiring speakers over the half dozen or so stages, so whether your passion is bird watching, bushwalking, sustainable gardening, bush foods, light earth building, Merging Galaxies or climate change impact, The Planting has you covered. On top of that is a children’s festival, a youth village (Kidfordia), and a plethora of workshops for foodies, visual artists, jewellers, comedians, story-tellers… One of the most winning arguments that Woodford has been espousing for the last 30 odd years is that it stands behind what it promotes, or as Director Bill Hauritz puts it, “In the beginning, we had a notion that we mightn’t just sing about issues facing the environment, but that we could get our hands dirty planting trees.” The rest is history as this once treeless 500 acre cattle property is now a rain-forested haven for birds and butterflies, and nestled amongst this beauty, is the festival site. A perfect setting then for a festival dedicated to the environment, wonderful music and the arts, and a community that supports it. And, if this all sounds appealing to you, you might just be interested in learning about Woodfordia. If so check out https://woodfordia.org/. There isn’t the room to elaborate here, but it is a community of like-minded people – based right here in South East Queensland, for whom the health of the planet is paramount. Some of the performing acts at the 2018 Planting include My Friend The Chocolate Cake, Martin Pearson, Mama Kin Spender, Neighbour, The Northern Folk, Wisdom Tree Live, Greg Sheehan and Ben Walsh, Chanel Lucas, Lizzie Flynn, Shellie Morris and Bluguru, amongst others, so I won’t be short of musical satisfaction at The Planting. Finally, and a big plus for me is that it isn’t the massive festival that Woodford is, with only 2,000 to 3,000 people expected each day – still enough to make a great small-to-medium festival, and with the beautiful weather at this time of year, we are the winners! Michael has a recording studio in Peachester. If you would like to find out more contact him on 0419 026 895 or E: mwhitick@bigpond.net.au

Music to commemorate sacrifice

Sunshine Coast Choral Society is extremely proud to be performing ‘Requiem’, a soulful and moving concert in memory of the centenary of the end of World War I. The concert is dedicated to the brave men and women who served with such courage and honour in that terrible war and in following conflicts and wars across our globe. ‘Requiem’ by Sir Karl Jenkins is a composition dedicated to his late father, a musician who was an inspiration to Jenkins. In the words of the musical maestro himself, “A Requiem is a mass for the souls of the dead.” The concert will be held at the Gregson and Weight Chapel, Wises Road, Buderim, at 2pm on Sunday, April 22, just prior to Anzac Day. While the chapel is a departure from the Choral Society’s usual venues, and a rather different setting, they feel it is a very fitting place to pay tribute. Attendees are encouraged to wear their service medals if they wish, and to please stay on to enjoy afternoon tea with the chorale. This ‘Requiem’ was first recorded and performed in 2005. Jenkins interjects movements featuring Japanese haiku, ‘death’ poems, with the more traditional features of a traditional Requiem Mass. He has created a beautiful fusion of cultures, using both Western and Eastern texts. Phone Colleen on 5477 7652 to make your booking, or visit www.suncoastchoral.org.au.

If like me you’re a fan of sharing your garden with native fauna, then here’s a few tips on providing habitat for our native animals. In particular we’ll discuss birds, but these tips will increase habitat for a wide range of fauna. The bulk of plants used in mainstream native gardens are cultivar Grevilleas, Banksias and Bottle Brushes. These are all amazing flowering plants that add colour, variety and are great nectar sources, but if they are the dominant plants in your native garden and they are surrounded by large open areas of lawn then aggressive birds such as Rainbow Lorikeets and the Common (or Noisy) Myna will often dominate to the exclusion of more timid birds. My tip here is to add different levels to your planting such as groundcovers and grasses; a diversity of shrubs and trees; and bushier plantings that give smaller or timid birds somewhere to hide. Apart from plants and the resources they provide, water is crucial for wildlife and you can supply this in the form of a pond or bird bath (just make sure small shallow containers are regularly cleaned as they can spread disease). But I digress, back to the plants ... Edible seed-bearing grasses such as Kangaroo Grass, Poa, Lomandra, Bamboo Grass and Graceful Grass can increase habitat for smaller birds, with the added bonus that these grasses provide valuable nesting material. It’s the picture of parental persistence watching tiny Red Brow Finches trying to keep their balance as they take flight with a length of grass ten times their height to build their nests with. Don’t forget fruiting plants such as Flax Lilly, Midyim, Breynia, Muttonwood, Bleeding Heart, Blueberry Ash and Native Elderberry provide sustenance for a great variety of birds including Lewin’s Honey Eaters, Emerald Doves, Bower Birds, King Parrots and Currawongs. Your garden is a great place to share with and learn about the wildlife, enjoy. Spencer and his wife Karen Shaw run Forest Heart Nursery 20 Coral Street, Maleny in Maleny. Noticeboard Out of South Africa

Welcome to Rev Costa Stathakis and his wife Marge, who have come to Glasshouse Country to serve in ministry at Glasshouse Country Uniting Church. Costa has a Bachelor’s Degree in Theology and has been in the ministry for over 40 years, first in the Methodist Church of South Africa and most recently in the Uniting Church of Australia. Marge has served as a pastoral counsellor and together they have led many courses in marriage enrichment, parenting, and bereavement, as well as spiritual retreats and family camps. Costa and Marge came to Australia to join their three grown children several years ago. Costa’s first appointment was at Moggill Uniting Church where he had a passion to see people connecting with God and each other, and enjoying the challenge of service to God in a new culture. He has since spent a year in Cairns ministering in the Uniting Church, and has now semi-retired to the Sunshine Coast where he looks forward to sharing in many more years of ministry, friendship and spiritual growth in this area.

From the churches Easter doesn’t make sense! I was reflecting the other day that we have a bunny who brings chicken eggs that are actually chocolate. Unless you know the story of the rabbit who was escaping the farmer and hid in the chicken coop… then it makes sense. The Christian Easter Story doesn’t make much sense either. We have a man, who lived as fully human, and then was killed and on the third day, he was alive again. The Bible stories tell of how Jesus ate food and yet walked through locked doors and was unrecognisable to his closest friends. It doesn’t make sense. At least it doesn’t make sense until you consider it is not a story of the possible, but a story of the impossible and a story that tells us about God not about humans. The Christian Church

Julie Worrall Glasshouse Country AnglicanChurch proclaims that with God all things are possible – even the dead can come back to life. As we continue to hear the stories of the disciples and Jesus’ appearances after the resurrection, we can be reminded of the ways that God brings new life to us even when we think all is lost. Even when we feel like we are dying inside from grief, hurt, betrayal or even any kind of burden that we carry, Jesus can bring new life to us. Sometimes it’s as simple as seeing life from another perspective; sometimes it’s a miracle that is not expected but much appreciated. In whatever way you need a sense of New Life and New Hope in your life at this time, may God who is not limited by human constraints or possibilities bring some new hope and life to you. Busy month for San Taekwondo fighters The fighters from San Taekwondo had a very busy month of March, competing both locally and internationally. The team travelled to Bundaberg for the first competition of the year and had great results finishing with six gold, three silver and three bronze. Two weeks later the team was competing again, this time at the Queensland open. The team finished with two gold, one silver and one bronze. Unfortunately some of the team was uncontested at this competition and were unable to compete as a result. Well done to the San competition team of Sonia Wearing, Georgia Adam, Conner Adam, Russell Wearing, Mitchell Flude, Emma Hall, Siena Cameron and Joey Mortimer, for the great results. Instructors Cameron and Kasia spent two weeks competing and training in Europe in March. Fighting in two events – the Dutch Open and the Belgium Open – both were looking to gain points to improve their world rankings. Unfortunately they didn’t progress past the first round in either the Dutch or Belgium opens on this trip but they were both happy

Cameron, Russell Wearing, Joey Mortimer, Sonia Wearing, Georgia Adam, Conner Adam, Siena Cameron, Mitchell Flude and Kasia at the Bundaberg Open with their progress and performance. The Dutch Open was held on March 10 in Eindhoven. Cameron lost to the USA in golden point overtime and Kasia lost to Chile 4-1. The Belgian Open was on the following week in Lommel, on March 17, and Cameron lost to France and Kasia lost to Germany in the round of 32. Cameron and Kasia are currently busy preparing to travel to China in a few weeks for their next competition, which is a wild-card qualification tournament for the Grand Slam in Wuxi. The junior athletes will continue to compete locally and build towards the national titles in September.

Saturday March 24 was a Stroke round, with a small field of 19 ladies. Winner was Cathy Stone 76 nett from Sonia Kenway 78 nett. Pin shots: (2) Cathy Stone, (5) Sonia Kenway, (16) Karen Gannon, (Second shot 18) Andrea Campbell. BRD went to 81 nett. Thursday April 29 was to be our Men's Invitation Day, rescheduled from a couple weeks previously. Only got a couple of holes played and the heavens opened up. So once again cancelled! Thursday April 5 was the Monthly Medal kindly sponsored by our Professional John Mellish. Only 45 ladies played, partly due to several attending a funeral and partly due to the rain! Winners: A Grade Cathy Stone 76 nett. B Grade Jennifer Kelly 76 nett. C Grade Maureen Hampshire 81 nett. R/Up A Grade Karen Gannon 76, B Grade Debs Rutherford 77, C Grade Sue McCracken 81. Gross Winners: A Grade Sonia Kenway 86, B Grade Gail Gundry 100, C Grade Jan Corfield 115. Pin Shots: (2) Lea Garner (5) Sue Williamson, (16) Teresa Keast, (2nd shot 18) Gail Gundry. Putting was a dead heat, Cathy Stone and Karen Gannon. BRD went to 83 nett. Unfortunately no photos this time as I haven't been there to take them. Surely we must have some nice weather soon, please! Men and medley results Contributed by Roger Bonhomme Despite a dampish Easter, the course continues to slowly dry out. A concerted effort by our greens staff

has reduced most rough to more playable depth. Thanks boys! Only a few scattered light showers fell during last Wednesday's medley two ball best ball Stableford. Long markers (32hcp) Jason Voros/Zane Mylrea showed a muddy pair of heels to the rest of the field finishing with an excellent 49 points. Tuesday working bee stalwarts Bill James/Allan Warry finished second with 47, beating Ray Lloyd and Marshall Caldwell on countback. The ball rundown went to 43 points. NTP: 2 – Bob Wright, 5 – Bill Chessells, 16 – Trevor Brimelow, 18 – Kevin Norton. Saturday April 8 saw 161 members and guests play stroke for the April monthly medal. Maleny Bowls Club

Contributed by Graeme Glover It was another great week at the bowls club following on from a very nice Easter break. Thanks again to those members who enjoyed some great bowls on Tuesday. Numbers here are getting back to normal as people return from holiday breaks. The wet weather has the green playing well even if it is difficult to get on to do a lot of preparation. This shows the real positive of our surface when we can get a game in when natural greens would be a wash out. Talking about wash-outs that was what happened on Wednesday. What a shame as we had such a great night the previous week with many turning out in fine form on the green and in the bar to celebrate our very nice new facilities. If you have not been down to see them drop by, all past and present members, what better way to celebrate the bowls club long standing presence in the Maleny community than to appreciate the improvements made by many of the past 80 years. Friday Scroungers was able to be played and enjoyed by a great roll up of people.

Welcome returns were made by some from holidays while others of our stalwarts were away, Doug being in Adelaide enjoying some family time. It was different without Mr Scroungers there. A great time was had by all on Friday. Thank you one and all for your part in making it a great afternoon. Thanks again to the John and Sandra Kapetanic who organised Tuesday games for members and Miles who organised Friday Scroungers. Thanks again volunteers. Take the opportunity to have a game of bowls at the club and enjoy our new facilities. Bring a friend and try and make Friday some time at the club staying on for the sponsors and members draw. Word of mouth is the best form of advertising; it is also very cost effective. Tell a friend. Be a part of the growing support for our club with in the community. Support our sponsors as the club is proactive in supporting local businesses this is the best way you can help us continue our growth. See you all on the green or in the bar. Keep rolling up.

Witta Tennis

GC&M News Reader Footy tipping results - Round 5

Contributed by Pauline Fraley Wednesday March 28: Witta Wagtails played Maleny Magics and came home with a win. Witta 35-33 with 5 sets to 3. We had a great day full of fun and good tennis. Thanks to Sonia, Christine, Gerry and sore legs Claire. Sonia was the player of the day winning all four sets. After a wet round 1 and draw against our sister team the Wikings, the Wompoos came out in force for round 2 against Gympie Silver testing out some new recruits. Gympie Silver has been our nemesis over the last number of years and this match wasn't any different. Unfortunately, after six hard-fought tie break sets we only came up trumps on one occasion which proved a dampener for all concerned. In the end we were convincingly beaten 10 sets to 2 and 67 games to 52. Noel George played extremely well for his first stint with the team, winning two of his four sets. Many thanks to Brenda Warner for filling in and travelling to Witta from Gympie for the match. Also cheerio to Bevan and Denis as the cheer squad. Our next match is at home against the new Kawana Koolers on April 29. The Wikings travelled to Gympie to play the 'Bronze'. Familiar faces, great courts and hospitality. The Wikings were off to a blinder, but as the tide came in, we kind of drifted off. A tie break here and there and we would have been in with a chance. On the day, Gympie bronze too good and got us by a couple of sets. Great tennis. Thanks to driver Moser, Paulinarrrggghhh, Glenno, No knees, Maree and Mike, with No knees champ of the day – well done John. Witta Tennis Golf Challenge is this Sunday, April 15, at the Maleny Golf Club, 7am tee off, shot gun start. Cost is $30 plus green fees. Contact Maree 0437 295 501. Social tennis: Monday 8am and Saturday 1pm all welcome. Court bookings: 0437 295 501 or www.wittatennis.com.au.

The Range Croquet Club

Contributed by Ken Baker There was a good practice session on Saturday morning but no play on the lawn on Sunday. Donna Manning played in the Stephens XYZ tournament on Saturday and Sunday winning three and losing one game. Well done. Heather Knight from Stephens Club managed this enjoyable event and also placed second. Helen David, the only person to beat Donna, placed first. Range Care visited on Tuesday for tea, biscuits and games. A good time was had by all. Thank you to those who provided refreshments and helped to run the event. Despite showers being about on Thursday, Donna, Garth Cottrell, Frances Harper and Ken Barker played a couple of fourteen pointers. Garth and Frances played a handicap game where Garth ended up slightly ahead 4-3. Ken defeated Donna 14-4. Remember that, from April 1, times for our play days have changed to 1 for 1.30pm. Club play days are Thursday and Sunday at 1 for 1.30pm. Saturday mornings at 8am there are lessons for beginners on the courts in the showgrounds. For details, contact president Vince Carbery on 5494 2193 or secretary Priscilla Vickers 5494 3555.

Just for Laughs A crazy goat

One morning Bobby and Timmy were out walking when they come across a sink hole. It was so deep they couldn’t see the bottom, so they try and work out how deep it was. Timmy says, “Let’s throw that stick in, we’ll count the seconds until it lands.” Bobby throws a stick in the hole. It disappears into the darkness, the boys count, but no sound emerges from the hole. They try it again with a rock with the same results. Bobby then sees an old railway tie lying in the grass and says, “Let’s throw that in – we’ll definitely hear that land.”

Your Stars ARIES March 21 - April 20 Some of you will be lucky in love this weekend, others will renew or strengthen a commitment. Career news can be good and it is a time to make useful contacts. Just remember that new purchases can be difficult under Mercury retrograde, which will change for your benefit after the 15th. The New Moon favours beauty care. TAURUS April 21 - May 21 You are lucky now with your ruling planet Venus now coming into your sign, Taurus. After the 19th of April the Sun will also be in your sign. So with all this, expect good health and vibrant energy levels. Do consider buying what is necessary to keep your beauty and glamour reflecting your image. Buy classic accessories. GEMINI May 22 - June 21 There is now a strong confident sense of who you are, especially with the planet Venus spending a couple of weeks in the sign of Taurus. Because this transit is in your inner psychological zone, what opinions do you now value? Be your authentic self! Make any changes you want. You have planetary support to create happiness in your future. CANCER June 22 - July 22 Because Mercury and Jupiter are Retrograde, there may be a sudden or unexpected business or economic upset. Even if there is a disruptive change, challenge or struggle, just be ready for quick action. On the positive side expect professional changes. After the 15th, Mercury goes direct for a fresh start, a new opportunity, or autonomy restored.

Week Beginning 11/04/18

The boys drag the railroad tie over and heave it into the hole and get ready to listen. At that moment, a goat comes flying out of the woods and jumps head first into the hole. The boys are amazed. Bobby says, “Did you see that? It was one crazy goat! Come on, let’s go home.” The boys start walking home when they meet Old Man John who says, “I’m lookin’ fer my goat, you see ’im?” Bobby says, “Yeah, we saw a goat. A crazy goat! He come runnin’ out of the woods and jumped straight into a sink hole. He’s dead for sure.” And John says, “That sounds like one crazy goat alright. But it wasn’t my goat – my goat is tied to a railway tie.”

SAGITTARIUS November 23 - December 21 You may be weighing up the advantages of doing things on your own against the chance to be part of a pair or group. You are up against some tough old heads who want to rule over you! This is with Mars, Saturn and Pluto in Capricorn. Your financial zone needs to be carefully protected. It is also good to be adaptable under quick shifts. CAPRICORN December 22 - January 20 Maintaining high energy levels will certainly be the case all month under strong planets in your sign. Both Pluto and Saturn in your sign are going retrograde. That pushes the planet Mars, making others press you hard for decisions and actions. It probably would be better to make all major decisions or purchases after the 15th of April. AQUARIUS January 21 - February 18 There is a standout theme from leadership signs transiting your chart, and they are Mars, Saturn, and Pluto in Capricorn. These planets are in your zone of spiritual awareness, pent up feelings and solitude! This group is under test from retrograde Mercury and Uranus, which is your ruler, in Aries. Time for a seven year personal review! PISCES February 19 - March 20 There are power struggles involving money and friends. Capricorn planets are testing the Aries planets. Retrograde Mercury and the wildcard Uranus are in your financial zone, so instabilities and sudden changes can occur. There is a strong desire to break free of financial obligations and loans. After the 15th something exciting or different occurs.

LEO July 23 - August 23 Because Meghan Markle is a Leo, and she has found happiness and success with Prince Harry, you can look this month into your house of travel, as foreigners may become very attractive to you! Mercury goes direct on the 15th and there is a wonderful, impulsive, fresh new start with the Aries New Moon. Hopefully all this helps your financial clarity improve. VIRGO August 24 - September 23 Why not do something a little out of your normal routine? You could meet interesting new people. Retrograde Mercury is your ruler and a lot of action is taking place in your financial zone. After Mercury goes direct on the 15th there is a Sun/Uranus conjunction that may bring a wonderful independent streak! You get a sense of power! LIBRA September 24 - October 23 Mars joins with the testing planet, Saturn, and the fateful planet, Pluto, in Capricorn, with the latter two retrograding in your home and family zone. There is an underlying dominating theme for you to take courage and become the leader, otherwise instability or difficulties may take place in home affairs. Personal individual responsibility is required. SCORPIO October 24 - November 22 Your faithful ruling planet Pluto stands alongside the taskmaster planet, Saturn. As both are retrograding, Mars will force you to go back over communications to double check your local and business affairs. Uranus will come to test your work and health, and perhaps the health of your pets. It’s a month of tough decisions!
