Hi Everyone...
on the Cover
It seems Glasshouse Country and Maleny are now in full festive season mode with even more local Christmas activities happening than ever before. There are plenty of wonderful free events suitable for the whole family right up until Christmas. We have included a comprehensive list of what’s happening on page 22, as well as our list of all the local houses that have gone a little light crazy and decorated their houses and gardens for the enjoyment of the rest of us on page 8. I’m really looking forward to heading along to two of my absolute favourite and biggest local events this weekend – the Maleny Street Party and Christmas Festival on Friday night from 5pm and the Glasshouse Country Community Carols on Saturday night at the Beerwah Sportsground from 3pm. Following some rather uncertain weather forecasts last year both of these events were cancelled, so I am pretty sure the organisers are keen to really make this year’s events totally rock. We are fortunate to live in a community where we have so many opportunities to get together with our friends and neighbours, sing some carols, grab something to eat, have a chat and generally embrace the true joy of Regards, Christmas.
These lovely Christmas Lights have been created by the Casey family at 62 Alfs Pinch Road, Beerwah Full list of local lights on page 8

Local News No ordinary carols for Beerwah Following the dire weather forecast last year the annual Glasshouse Country Community Carols event at the Beerwah Sportsground had to be cancelled, which means the organisers are even more determined to make this year’s event one to remember. Event coordinator Bob Burns said the stage was set and the theme for this year’s event was most definitely a singalong of popular carols, which will be interlaced with familiar mainstream songs for everyone to enjoy. “There are also kids’ rides and activities that will kick off early from 3pm with the petting zoo, jumping castle, face painting, games on the oval as well as some small rides,” Bob said. “Entertainment on the stage is from 4.30 with the highly acclaimed Pantastic Steelpan Band. “From here on the music will be non-stop until the grand finale at 8.20pm when the laser light spectacular will illuminate the sky. “The choirs and musicians performing are a truly amazing mix of first-class entertainers,” he said. Those attending can take advantage of the wonderful budget-priced eat street style food on offer

The Queensland Greens have announced Tracy Burton as its candidate for Division 5 in the upcoming Sunshine Coast Council elections in March 2020. Ms Burton, a long-serving high school teacher, mother of two and an active participant in environmental projects locally and internationally, believes the Sunshine Coast is a beautiful and unique part of Queensland that needs to be preserved and protected. An experienced candidate, Ms Burton represented The Greens as the candidate for Buderim in the 2017 state election and more recently as the candidate for Fisher in the 2019 federal election, achieving positive swings and results in each election. “By running as a candidate for The Greens, people know what I stand for. I am being honest and upfront about my values,” Ms Burton said. “Having lived in the hinterland for 12 years now, I have seen the coast develop and change, and not always for the better. I think there is genuine concern in the community for the direction of our coast, as the population increases and the effects of climate change are becoming more dangerous every season. “If elected, I will immediately propose that council declares a climate emergency, in line with Noosa and all the other concerned councils around Australia. “We will protect the Sunshine Coast from further
habitat loss due to overdevelopment and look to improve our climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies. “I will advocate for greater participatory democracy in council’s decision making to increase transparency, trust and integrity. I will also address the growing issue of housing unaffordability, homelessness and the rights for renters,” she said. Ms Burton said The Greens were poised to compete strongly on the Sunshine Coast as more people were aware that the old parties did not represent the communities that elected them. “Fossil fuel and corporate donations have left them unable to confront the climate emergency that is tragically unfolding before our eyes,” she said. “I am proud to be an active member of The Queensland Greens and it is an honour to stand as the candidate for Division 5 in the 2020 local council election. I look forward to sharing my vision for a society of equality, ecological sustainability and justice, for all of us.” tracy.burton@qld.greens.org.au www.instagram.com/tracybgreens www.facebook.com/tracyburton.greens

Contributed by Charles Russell It was all hands on board for members of the Landsborough Seventh-day Adventist Community Church dusting, washing and cleaning their newly completed church renovation in preparation for its first church service on Saturday, December 14. Church members were very excited to see how the building has been transformed including the extensive landscaping. The renovation was undertaken to increase the seating capacity and add extra rooms as well as modernise the facilities. This is the first phase of a building program that will also include a purpose-built community centre. Church members express their appreciation to the Glasshouse Country Uniting Church in allowing
them to use their facility during the months of renovations. A special community Christmas program will be held in the church on Saturday, December 21 from 10.45am.

LNP choose McArdle replacement With the announced retirement of Mark McArdle, the state seat of Caloundra will be hotly contested at next October’s state government election. Last month Labor announced Jason Hunt as its candidate for Caloundra and now the Liberal National Party has chosen who will take up the fight in the traditionally conservative seat. Liberal National Party leader Deb Frecklington has welcomed the endorsement of Stuart Coward as the LNP candidate for Caloundra. Ms Frecklington said Stuart had what it takes to be an exceptional local member. “Stuart has the experience, work ethic and connections to continue the great work of the retiring Mark McArdle,” Ms Frecklington said. “Mark McArdle has made an extraordinary contribution to Caloundra since being elected in 2004 and I want to thank him again for his dedication and service. “I welcome Stuart to the team and look forward to hitting the hustings with him in Caloundra and highlight the LNP’s plan to create jobs, cut surgery wait times and bust congestion by upgrading the Bruce Highway,” she said. Mr McArdle said Mr Coward was an outstanding candidate. “Caloundra is in safe hands with Stuart Coward,” Mr McArdle said. “I look forward to working with him in the lead up to this crucial election in October 2020 and I urge everyone in the Caloundra electorate to get behind him.”
The married father-of-three has extensive experience across several industries and is currently an executive officer at Steps Group Australia, a national not-for-profit organisation that supports people with disabilities, based in Caloundra. Mr Coward graduated from Caloundra State High School and has been an active local member of the LNP for more than 16 years. His community leadership credentials also include roles at Queensland Health, Community Services and Health Industry Skills Council, National Disability Services, Caloundra Chamber of Commerce, Commerce Industry Queensland and a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. Mr Coward said it was an absolute privilege to be endorsed as the candidate for Caloundra heading into the 2020 Queensland poll. “I’ve spent most of my life in Caloundra and I’m very passionate about the region,” Mr Coward said. “I have big shoes to fill but I’m committed to working hard to ensure Caloundra stays in LNP hands. “Only Deb Frecklington and the LNP have a plan to create new jobs, cut hospital wait times, bust congestion by fixing roads including the Bruce Highway and invest in water security infrastructure projects.”

Beerwah QCWA
The local Beerwah branch of the QCWA may be a small association but it continues to pack a powerful punch when it comes to supporting and engaging in the local community. We spoke with executive committee member Deb Ives to find out more about this long-running association – what they do and why investing in the fabric of our local community is so important. Q: Can you tell us about the Beerwah QCWA? A: The Beerwah branch of the Queensland Country Women's Association is made up of a small passionate group of women who are dedicated to supporting local community members, groups and charities. We have a humble base in the hall located just near the train station on Simpson Street, which is also available for day hire. Q: You run successful regular markets. Tell us a little more. A: We generally try to run our artisan-inspired markets four times a year. One of the key reasons we run these events is to give local groups, organisations, small businesses, handcrafters, artisans and producers a platform to market their services and wares. In 2019, we successfully rebranded the Beerwah CWA Tower Green Markets and will continue to endeavour to infuse our fresh ideas, teamed with our traditional values, to grow these market day events. Our markets provide a lovely showcase for some incredible local talent and are a great opportunity for community members to showcase locally produced items and handcrafted wares. Our first market date for 2020 will be our Easter market on March 28.

Zontians Leanne Newberry, Judith Ross-Smith, Renate Ogilvie and Stephanie Sutherns ready to install the signs Perhaps you don’t know how to get help for yourself and your children. As part of the United Nations global program to end violence against women and children, the Zonta Club of Blackall Range will participate in a campaign against gender-based violence. The club, using an initiative devised by Zonta International District 22 in South East Queensland, will place signs in toilets used by the public that give official phone numbers that women and children can contact in an emergency – DV Connect, Lifeline, Women’s Legal Services and Kids Helpline. Blackall Range club president Judith Ross-Smith said there had been an overwhelmingly positive response from organisations such as doctors and medical professionals' surgeries to the campaign. “Doctors have told us that while they can hand out cards with these numbers, patients often do not tell them they are being abused at home," Judith said. “One doctor said that women need to have access to these numbers in a private place where they can enter them into their phones or write them down where they can’t be seen. “In some areas, such as Brisbane and Noosa, city
and regional councils are helping with the roll out, placing the signs in public toilets. “Here on the range signage will be permanently placed in halls, neighbourhood centres and as many toilets accessible to the public as possible,” Judith said. “Domestic violence is escalating exponentially. Every day we hear of women and children being hurt, even murdered, and somehow we have to stop this. “University research and government departments are attempting to find the reasons for this from mental health to anger and revenge, but we also have to help protect women who find themselves in this situation. “There are women’s refuges available but victims do not always know where to locate them, and it is often the case that women do not know where to turn for help. “These phone numbers will give them access to refuges and other kinds of support for them and their children,” Judith said. The Zonta Club of Blackall Range area extends from Conondale to Mapleton but the signs will be in toilets throughout South East Queensland including Brisbane and towns like Toowoomba, Nambour and on the Sunshine Coast.

It has been 47 years since Peter Jenson from the Blackall Range Lions Club shaved off his moustache, and 25 years since he was without a beard. During most of that time his facial hair was clipped very short until two years ago when he let it grow significantly. So when Peter decided to shave off his beard and moustache, he thought it would be an opportunity to raise a little money, perhaps $1,000, for prostate cancer research. After a few short weeks he was able to joke “I have $3,000 and no friends left”. By the end of the club's charter dinner, much to everyone's surprise, more than $5,000 had been raised with money still coming in. The project has led Peter to become passionate about raising awareness about prostate cancer due to his research for the publicity material. He has also discovered that his old friends were in fact very good friends who were more than willing to pay up, and complete strangers handed him money when they heard what he was doing.

He is also thrilled at the generosity of individual Lions members and Lions Clubs that made a donation. These days he is having fun catching out people who don't recognise him clean shaven but thinks it won't be long before he grows back the shorter, clipped version, much to the disappointment of his kids and grandkids. The Lions Prostate Cancer Research and Treatment Project is expected to benefit to the tune of $5,500 when all funds are in.
Like to win $10,000?
Tickets are being snatched up as part of this year’s Witta Recreational Club art union but there’s still time to be in the draw for the chance to win $10,000 and ten chances of winning $50. Tickets are $50 and are available at Sommer’s Fuel at Witta, Imelda’s on Maple Maleny, at the next Witta Farmers Market and at the Witta Sports and Recreational Club on Wednesday afternoons and Friday evenings or by calling 0409 266 507. The raffle will be drawn on December 31 at the Witta Recreational Club’s New Year’s Eve celebration and while the winner doesn’t need to be present, what better reason to head on down to ring in the new year and hopefully be $10,000 richer! There will be live music by Damien Barnes and his band throughout the night, and food and drinks available with the bar open from 5pm.
Witta Recreational Club promotional officer Lynda Burgess said the money raised would go towards the refurbishment of the kitchen/bar area in the clubhouse. “We were lucky enough to receive a grant from the Sunshine Coast Council to refurbish our floor in our kitchen/bar area and money raised through the art union will go towards refurbishing the whole area,” she said. “We’re hoping to commence work in the new year and we’re looking forward to seeing our new space”. If you’re looking for a laidback, relaxed way to ring in the new year, head on down to the Witta Recreational Club on December 31 and don’t forget to grab your tickets in the art union before they’re all gone.

Renovations progressing
GC&M News caught up with Glasshouse Country RSL Sub Branch president Brian Machin recently to ask him how work is going on the building in Reed Street, Glass House Mountains. Brian told us the renovations were progressing, although slower than they had hoped. “There was a hold up in Canberra, which has affected the distribution of funds and required us to ask suppliers to re-quote on their services,” Brian said. “This, in turn, has caused some contractors and trades to be unavailable at previously agreed time frames as they must fit in their other businesses.” The good news is that the inside of the building has now been re-sheeted in preparation for the painter to begin work. Flooring and cabinetry will be installed this week and the builder is aiming to have the works completed by December 20, or shortly thereafter. New cement paths have been laid and the pad for the shed on the boundary will be relocated. The frame for the disabled access ramp is now in place and the deck for this will be installed within the next week. “Unfortunately the builder has also encountered previous termite damage to the front entrance necessitating a rebuild of this area,” Brian said. “You will notice the main deck is nearing completion with the roof having been installed, the flooring to be sanded and coated, then the outdoor furniture will be set in place. “Our opening date is set for January 7 and more information on this event will be available soon. “Have a very merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous New Year, and we will see you in 2020,” Brian said.
Local fish stocks in good hands
By Peter Pollock, fund raising co-ordinator The Ewen Maddock Fish Management (EWFM) group released 10,000 bass fingerlings into the Ewen Maddock Dam and 16,216 into Baroon Pocket Dam on Saturday, November 30. These releases are part of the group’s continuing plans to stock these dams with Australian native fish. Since the group started stocking, more than 100,000 bass fingerlings have been released into Ewen Maddock and more than 50,000 into Baroon Pocket Dam. Over the last few years EMFM has also released about 5,800 Mary River cod into the two dams, helping to preserve these endangered species. Initially the group, all volunteers, raised funds to purchase fingerlings by raffles and sausage sizzles. The last Bunnings sausage sizzle raised $1,260. Now most of EMFM’s funds for stocking come from the Queensland Fisheries Department, which collects stocked impounded permit (SIP) fees from anglers fishing in stocked impoundments. It then distributes funds to fish stocking groups. An SIP for people over the age of 18 is required for people to fish in these two dams and this permit covers all Queensland stocked impoundments. The annual cost is $50 per adult, $36 for concession card holders, or $10 for a week. Permits are available from post offices or on the department’s website and must be carried when fishing. EMFM acknowledges the assistance of the Fisheries Department and SEQ Water in its endeavours. EMFM Inc is a not-for-profit group and is looking for new members interested in stocking or taking part in fishing competitions held at the dams. Interested people can contact the treasurer Wayne Eassie on 0457 457 325 or secretary Ross Dixon on 0411 749 445.

Friends of Cahill’s Scrub
Contributed by Sandra Poole Our environmental group at Peachester still found cause for an end-of-year celebration at Clouds Wine Barrel Café, Maleny. Given the challenging climatic circumstances that we faced this year, our intrepid little group made more positive steps forward in the maintenance and preservation of this little patch of bushland and its inhabitants. Under the guidance of our conservation officer Brendan Stephen, whose intimate local knowledge of the types of seedlings best suited for our location, we planted over 700 trees. Therefore, despite the ongoing drought we have lost very few of these plants. The small dam on the south-eastern side of the scrubland has become a vital resource to the local wildlife given the drying up of the gullies and creeks flowing into London Creek. The group continued its assault on lantana and other weeds allowing the native raspberry bushes to flourish thus providing cover for the tiny birds and a yummy feast for those creatures inclined to eat the fruit (including me). Thanks to the Sunshine Coast Council for their continuing support of local land care groups. This work is so important to the integrity and livability of the Sunshine Coast, especially in the face of a rapidly increasing population and the consequent pressure being put on the remnant pockets of bushland that remain. These special places are the reason for people wanting to move to this area and their health and maintenance should be a priority. It is our hope, therefore, that 2020 will be a year of growth for the Friends of Cahill’s Scrub. We encourage the local community of Peachester, or anyone for that matter, who would like to give us a hand once a month to plant trees (and friendship) for the future. Don’t forget to leave a nice big dish of water out for Santa’s reindeer (and the other thirsty creatures). It will be greatly appreciated.

Time is running out use it or lose it for 2019
Contributed by Patricia Bradford We enjoyed the final meeting for the year in the garden of Trish and Gary Bradford. Viki Blaik gave a brief talk about some of the beautiful places they had visited in Europe recently. She also told the club about getting together with a small group to discuss affordable housing for older women who have become homeless. Results of the competition bench for October were first to Suella Lanceley 21 points, second Trish Bradford 16 points and third Pam Innes 15 points. Suella showed off her collection of salvias and shared cuttings. We had an enjoyable barbeque lunch, then a wander around the garden. Fortunately, the garden hadn't suffered much damage from the hail storm the previous Sunday. We combined with the CWA for our Christmas breakup at Vianta recently. Instead of a secret Santa, garden club members each give a cash donation that was presented to the Twinnies Seabird Rescue to help with their excellent work in rescuing and rehabilitation of birds. There is no meeting in December. See you all again on Thursday, January 16 at Peachester Hall at 9.30am. We would love to see new members join us in the new year. You would be very welcome. Community Groups Probus 2019
Glass House Mountains Probus sadly said goodbye to Ivon Northage, who died in November. Although Ivon only joined the club early in 2019, his passion for the Glass House Mountains readily found likeminded members in the club. Sadly the club members will never be able to have the wonderful experiences of the area they had looked forward to with Ivon. The club has seen a year of change during 2019, especially its venue. Beerwah Community Hall was the club’s home at the beginning of the year until it moved to the RSL Hall in Glass House Mountains for a few months. No sooner had they settled in and begun to have barbeques than the longawaited refurbishment of the RSL started. As with all alterations there was a period of upheaval and confusion until the job is done. The Probus Club has been given refuge in the Glass House Community Hall. The club thanked Aileen and the management team for the months it has held meetings there. The first meeting for 2020 will be held in the newly
enlarged RSL in Reed Street, where the members look forward to happy times together. The club’s end of the year outing was to Bankfoot House on Old Gympie Road. This was a remarkable experience for the members. They were excited to see what the Sunshine Coast Council was doing there. The bequest of the property and everything in it has been honoured with the presentation of the artefacts, while the cataloguing and archiving of information is spectacular. The club congratulated all who were involved. Christmas festivities for Probus will be held at the Hideaway after which the club we will have a well-earned break. Looking back on 2019, the club expressed its thanks to Lea Parkes and her team at Glasshouse Country & Maleny News, for their interest in Probus and its doings throughout the year. If any readers want to find a sense of belonging and make new friends, join Probus in 2020. Contact Norma on 5439 0446.

Noticeboard Garden club shares its success
Maleny Garden Club president Dot Jupp was pleased to present cheques to representatives of six community organisations on the Blackall Range at the club's recent last meeting of the year. A total of $22,000, the proceeds from the club's 2019 Gardening on the Edge event, was distributed to Blackall Range Care, Maleny Hospital Auxiliary, Rural Fire Brigade, the Men's Shed, Maleny Primary School chaplaincy and Maleny High School chaplaincy. In presenting the cheques, Dot said club members were delighted to support other organisations. She said Jan Maguire was well under way with planning for the 2020 event, which will be held on June 13-14. Since its inception in 2005, the annual Gardening on the Edge event has enabled the club to disburse more than $150,000 to benefit the activities of local community groups in the hinterland.

Glasshouse Country & Maleny News
We come to that time of year when many people remember and celebrate the reason for Christmas – of God sending His Son, Jesus Christ, into the world to ultimately bring peace and joy. Others challenge the traditions of our great nation and ask why we need to remember an event that happened more than 2,000 years ago in a distant land where the culture is so different to ours. Every person has a unique worldview and, as such, there are millions of religions. It is interesting to note that the Bible, which has spanned over many millennia, remains unified and inclusive of everyone as seen in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that He gave his One and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life (New International Version). John goes on to say in verse 17: “For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him. Many might not agree that they need to be “saved or even understand what being saved means. These verses point to a choice that everyone has to make in life: to remain on the path to perishing (dying eternally without a relationship with God) or living an eternal life with God. These verses highlight God’s desire to see everyone “saved,

God loves us so much, He allowed His only Son, Jesus Christ, to die for all the sins (wrong things we say and do) we commit in life. You Said It
Editor’s note
Thanks to the many readers who wrote letters, phoned the office or dropped in to let us know how disappointed they are about us not yarn bombing the tree outside our office this year. Council did advise that they do waiver the application fees on permits for community groups to do a yarn bombed tree, so the good news is that if we were a not-for-profit group doing the same thing the fee would not apply but the paper work and public liability insurance still applies. We will work on something different for next year. For all those who love a bit of Christmas sparkle take a look at page 8 for the list of local properties that are lighting up for Christmas.
Re: Lea’s column December 4
Your plight with the yarn-bombed Christmas tree shows how those who complain to council have overrun those who want to do something positive. Is this the world we want to live in - a race to the bottom with bureaucracy and pettiness ruling? My suggestion to cut 90% of council complaints would be that complaints won’t be dealt with unless the complainer fronts up with the council worker. Council is used like an anonymous note to the school principal. It’s worse than Facebook. (Of course, if someone is abusive, then that is a different matter and the approach would be different). We have lost the art of actually talking to each other and council rules are helping that along nicely. I’m sorry about your Christmas tree Lea. Andrew McLean Maleny We were perplexed. How can an act created to bring joy and fun in our community get so out of hand? What about the rest of us ratepayers who enjoyed looking at the once-a-year display? Can we have a say! Bert and Lydia Ockhuisen Glass House Mountains Well, they’ve done it again but who are ‘they’? The Sunshine Coast Council? I don’t think so. An organisation cannot spontaneously produce new ideas. The people who work for the organisation do not come to work one morning to find that overnight the organisation has created new laws, by laws fees,
Question for the minister
Considering the ongoing fire emergency, I have contacted the Minister for Fire and Emergency Service in regard to what is becoming an obvious and potentially catastrophic situation in our small rural community of Peachester. Being a high rainfall area, we had never envisaged that it could become a trap in an emergency fire situation. However, recent climatic changes have since changed our view. When we relocated to the area there appeared to be two access roads into this estate, namely Macdonalds Road and Morrison Road. Indeed Morrison Road (via Storrs Road) is the road everyone is directed to travel on by the GPS system when approaching Peachester from the east. While this is a gazetted road it is not constructed. This leaves our estate in the dangerous position of having only one access point in and out along Macdonalds Road onto Bald Knob Road. Macdonalds Road is shown on Google maps as going right through and connecting to Mount Mellum Road. However, this road is also not constructed. 18

fines and so forth. For laws to be made or changed, an actual human being must propose those changes, which must then be approved by a group of other actual human beings. These human beings should not hide behind the organisation they work for. I would like the individual who first suggested that the GC&M News not be allowed to decorate the tree in front of their office – and those who supported that proposal – to publicly stand behind their decision and to explain why they thought it necessary or acceptable. Maggie de Prinse Beerwah I read your editorial with sadness yesterday and today when I received the Sunshine Coast Council weekly eNews headlines I read this: "Find a community Christmas tree or event near you. Twenty trees across the region are now providing a festive glow for local communities, following Sunshine Coast Council’s switching on of the Community Christmas trees." Is the same person who lodged a complaint about the Christmas tree outside the GC&M News office also going to lodge a complaint about the 20 trees the council is lighting up across the region? It is time we as individuals and as members of our wonderful community started to ask questions about such a decision - a decision that has denied the Glass House community of some festive Christmas cheer. The council needs to be more transparent about the reason for this decision so that the community has a right of reply. Jan Maguire Maleny
Please explain
Rage and astonishment were my first two reactions upon learning that a community member had complained about the yarn bombed tree outside the GC&M News office, which has pleased and entertained so many of us for so many years now. This was followed by a rush of other descriptors and reactions to this person. But then I would find that I had used up my apportioned 200-word limit with no satisfactory result. So instead, I would like to encourage and extend an invitation to the person responsible for complaining to council about this to write a letter to GC&M News explaining their rational and reasonings behind taking the course of action that they have. I am assuming that the editor would happily accept and publish an anonymous explanation. I think that they owe this to the larger community who have enjoyed this harmless festive expression of joy and happiness for so many years. Please come forward and explain. I can’t begin to imagine how poor Lottie and John must feel. Yours grumply Cliff Schnick Glass House Mountains We are surrounded by Crohamhurst State Forest and London Creek green offset reserve, both of which are minimally maintained. Should a fire start in either of these areas under similar conditions as was seen at Peregian recently I fear there would be catastrophic consequences to life and property. Recently an officer from the Sunshine Coast Council informed me that because of the expense and potential danger to motorists on a less than optimal road (and the possible consequential litigation) there is no way that either of these roads will ever be constructed. How then was it possible for this estate to be approved by the council and Emergency Services Department in the first place, given that no alternative escape strategy was provided for in a situation such as is happening at the moment? If life or property is lost in the current or future events because of the lack of suitable infrastructure in newly developed areas, who will take responsibility? Sandra Poole Peachester

Re: Transport levy
Recent letters to GC&M News have highlighted a serious failing to provide essential services to the population of all the areas west of the railway line. This year a few of our community suffered medical conditions restricting them from driving until they recovered and were cleared medically. Upon contacting the local elected representative's office I was advised to bring it up at the next community meeting. Having no transport made this somewhat difficult. Contacting the state member's office their solution was apply to one of our dedicated charity groups. They, of course, are bound by political red tape and can take 2-8 weeks to get the paperwork done. Our federal member refused to be drawn into the problem, just as he refused to be drawn into the problem of nursing home failures. Our wonderful people in the Peachester community arranged volunteers to transport their ailing neighbours to doctors and shopping. There is a taxi that leaves from the Peachester store but how does one with no transport living 3-4km away get there? I will be thinking of this on my way to lodge my vote at the next elections. As I reflect on 2019, I am thankful for the opportunities to engage with so many incredibly talented and selfless people throughout our community’s business and social groups. I have been encouraged by what has been achieved and inspired to contribute further. Twelve months ago, I simply could not imagine the profound impact they would have on both my personal and professional life. I always leave the gatherings energised and inspired by our conversations, and feel an increased sense of confidence to not only advocate for our community on the council but also empowered to become a better wife, mother, businesswoman and community member. Whatever happens in the 2020 election, I know that my connections with these wonderful groups will be ongoing. Thank you all for opening your doors and your hearts to me this year. As we look towards the Christmas break and a new year, I encourage you all to explore the many groups in our community that exist to support you and others. I invite you to join me in the recently created Sunshine Community Groups Directory Group on Facebook. Together we can build a library of the many wonderful groups and events in our community, in the hope that it will help more of us connect in 2020. Jenny Broderick Division 1 candidate Sunshine Coast Council
Stop whingeing and be happy
Beerwah Homemaker Centre will be a huge positive outcome bringing in local jobs and economy. It will happen as the population and development increases whether we like it or not. We need a competitive market in this area. The local businesses and staff need to lift their game to attract customers by giving decent customer service skills so people will come back to buy your product instead of driving to Morayfield or Caloundra for more services to do a purchase. These businesses are fearful of competition. Sadly, over the past 10 years I and friends have seen sour, unfriendly, uninviting faces, which is a turn-off at the front counter, because they have no competition. So why should staff of these businesses be happy towards a customer? If you’re clever you can turn that into a positive by improving your staff training in customer service skills with a cheerful obliging smile. Remember, the customer is the person holding the roof up on your business. Name supplied Glass House Mountains

Health &Beauty Put safety first this silly season Falls are a common cause of injury during the silly season and locals are being urged to stay safe this festive season. Dr Ben Close, emergency medicine director of Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service (SCHHS), said many people did not realise the potential hazards that came about at Christmas time and were often too busy or distracted to ensure they were keeping themselves safe. “By taking note of potential risks and being aware of your environment, you can avoid injury to yourself or your loved ones this Christmas,” Dr Close said.

In December 2018, 551 people presented to SCHHS emergency departments with falls-related injuries. “Christmas-related injuries are very common as a result of falling from a ladder, table or whatever else is being used to decorate Christmas trees,” Dr Close said. “We also see people falling while using ladders incorrectly. It is important to make sure there is always someone else at home when using a ladder, and never have more than one person on a ladder at a time.” And while it is the season to be merry, locals are also being urged to drink responsibly and avoid

doing physical activities while intoxicated. “We often treat patients injured after alcohol has impaired their judgement. They do things they may not do in a more sober frame of mind and can end up injured,” Dr Close said. He also encouraged parents to think carefully before attempting to use toys they had given their children. “If it’s been a few years since you’ve attempted to ride a skateboard, or another highly physical activity, it’s probably best avoided,” he said.

Elected Representatives Andrew Wallace
Federal Member for Fisher
Delivering the road and rail we need today
In the past few weeks the Prime Minister has announced a Queensland-wide $1.9 billion road and rail infrastructure package that is going to have a big impact on the Sunshine Coast. The Morrison government has brought forward $90 million of our $390 million in funding as a down payment to duplicate the North Coast rail line between Beerburrum and Landsborough. This funding will allow the state government to get construction on the project under way immediately, create much needed construction jobs on the Sunshine Coast, stimulate the local economy and get a more reliable and regular train service for our community far sooner than planned. The rest of the federal government’s $390 million will flow when the construction works reach agreed milestone stages. As part of the same package the Morrison government has also accelerated another $155 million in funding to get more Bruce Highway upgrades between Linkfield Road and Caloundra Road started right away. By bringing forward these important road and rail projects we will drive jobs, boost the economy, make the Sunshine Coast’s roads safer and reduce travel times so people can be with their families instead of being stuck in traffic.
Merry Christmas and a happy New Year
By now you should have received my 2019 Christmas card. You will have noticed that this year my card features a spectacular image of the Glass House Mountains at sunset, taken by Sunshine Coast local Shane Farmer. Inside my card you’ll also find a handy magnetic calendar for 2020 with all the dates of the school and public holidays. You can detach that calendar when your Christmas cards come down and stick it on your fridge. My office will be closed from Monday, December 23 until Monday, January 13. After a short break over Christmas I will again be launching the new year with a series of listening posts around our electorate of Fisher. As part of that tour I will be visiting Glass House Mountains, Landsborough, Mooloolah Valley and Maleny. Look out for my January newsletter arriving in your post boxes early in the new year for details of when and where you can meet me. Christmas is a time to reflect, to plan for the future and to be grateful that we live in the best place on Earth. Most of all it is a time for family. So once again this year from my family to yours, merry Christmas and a happy New Year. I hope you have a very successful 2020. State Member for Glass House Last four Local Heroes
I’m thrilled to announce the winners of the fourth and final round of my Local Heroes grants for 2019. These grants are designed as a small way to thank and help individuals and groups in our Glass House communities who are trying to better themselves and others. In no particular order, the winners are: • Mooloolah Public Hall Association Inc – towards their annual Christmas party to be held on Friday, December 20. This is a free community event run entirely by volunteers. • Woodford State School – some secondary classes were recently created including a chess club and they have begun competing against other schools. The grant money will go towards purchasing more chess kits and some digital chess clocks/timers. • Tibro’s Netball Club Inc – Tibro’s netball stars will use their grant to buy new equipment such as special balls for their Saturday matches. • Maleny Street Christmas Carnival – the funds will go towards the general running of this annual festival event and the provision of waste bins and rubbish collection. I am very pleased to see these groups pick up the grants as I’ve watched each of them work tirelessly throughout the year to better our communities. The $250 grant sometimes makes all the difference and allows them to host an event, purchase materials, ease financial strain or simply keep on doing what they do. The closing dates for my 2020 rounds will be on my website early next year, so keep your eyes peeled on www.andrewpowell.com.au. As always, you have to be in it to win it! Andrew presents a cheque for Maleny Christmas Festival to Karen Shaw
Christmas and New Year office closure
Can you believe it’s almost Christmas? It creeps up on me every year. One minute it’s July and the next the year is almost over. Where does the time go? Parliament concluded for the year in late November and I will close my office from December 20 to January 13 to give my staff a bit of a break. Up until then I’ve got a packed and exciting schedule, which includes school graduations and awards nights, Christmas carols, break-up parties and a whole lot more. While the office is closed, emails and voicemails will still be checked periodically, so please feel free to leave a message on 5318 8100 or send an email to glass.house@parliament.qld.gov.au. I wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year! glass.house@parliament.qld.gov.au www.andrewpowell.com.au Search us on Facebook Andrew Powell

Division 5 - Sunshine Coast BioBlitz wins sustainability award!
I’m overjoyed to share that our very own Mary Cairncross BioBlitz recently won the Banksia Sustainability Government Award! These are the longest-running sustainability awards in the world and recognised as the most prestigious of their kind in Australia. This is a well-deserved honour for the entire BioBlitz survey team of scientists, artists, traditional owners, staff and volunteers who dedicated their knowledge, research experience and learnings as well as thousands of hours of effort to the BioBlitz. Be sure to visit the reserve these school holidays to see the BioBlitz Exhibition, showcasing findings and creations from Australia’s first vertical bioblitz, on from December 19-January 12.
Russell Family Park update
I wanted to let the Montville and surrounds community know the playground installation will be completed before Christmas. However, the associated landscape constructed work will not be completed until early in the new year. In the meantime, there will be site safety fencing around the works and parking will be made available for community use.
Together we thrive!
I was proud to attend the recent launch of the Sunshine Coast Community Strategy 20192041. The new 20-year framework will provide the platform for how council, the community and other tiers of government will work together to enable the region to become a fairer place with more opportunities for all. The strategy will be implemented through delivery of the first five-year Community Strategy Action Plan 2019-2024, which will in turn guide council’s annual operational planning. To learn more, please visit council’s website and search ‘community strategy’.
Council hours over Christmas and New Year
Over the festive season, there will be some changes to opening hours for council’s customer contact counters, reception desks and development information service counters. Council’s customer contact counters and reception desks will be closed on Friday, December 27. You will still be able to contact council via phone, web chat, email and web call back on that day. The counters and reception desks will reopen on Monday, December 30. Development information counters will be closed from 2pm on December 24 and will reopen on January 2 in Maroochydore and January 6 in Caloundra. For full details visit council’s website.
Season’s greetings
As this is my last column for the year, I would like to wish all readers a very merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous 2020. I hope you all have a chance to unwind, spend quality time with family and friends and enjoy yourself over the holiday period. Hinterland Families Smart Strings Rock and Roll concert Glasshouse Christian College recently held its annual Smart Strings Rock and Roll concert. The big event is a celebration of what year 3 children can learn in a 30-minute violin or cello lesson once a week at school. The rock and roll theme provided staff, students and even some parents with the opportunity to dress up in their best leather jacket or poodle school accompanied by themed accessories like sunglasses and ponytails. There was a lot of toe-tapping good fun and great music as students played ‘We will rock you’, ‘Rocking strings’, ‘Pizzicato hiccups’ (a student favourite), ‘Revving up’ and ‘Blueberry pie’ as well as solos, duets and small groups taking on more challenging tunes. The theme carried through to refreshments with doughnuts and milkshakes on offer. Afterwards, there was a chance to have a photo with Elvis, the Fonz or a favourite teacher.

Want to get a photo of your kids with the big red guy this Christmas but don’t fancy braving the traffic and the crowds at the big shopping centres? Well, you are in luck as the local Landsborough Markets will be featuring a special children’s photos with Santa fundraiser at their next two Saturday markets leading up to Christmas. Photos of the kids with Santa will be available from 9-11am for a gold coin donation, with all proceeds going towards supporting the Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade. Market spokesperson Sue-Ellen Borham says parents and carers can have their children’s photos taken either by Santa’s helper and emailed straight to them or they can take one on their own device. “This is a great way to get that Christmas photo of the kids, which can make a great family memory or gift for loved ones – all without the hassle of having to drive to the coast,” Sue-Ellen said. “It is also a great way to support the wonderful work of our local fire brigade.” There is also a Christmas raffle to be drawn on December 21 with a prize value of more than $200 and includes items such as jewellery, homewares, homemade goodies and more that stallholders have donated. The last market for 2019 will be Saturday, December 21 and the first markets in 2020 are on January 11. More details are available at the Landsborough Market Facebook page. Popular Solar Nights event to glow again
The Sunshine Coast’s largest light trail is set to return at the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC), with the hugely popular Solar Nights scheduled from December 13-22. After attracting an estimated 25,000 visitors to USC’s Sunshine Coast campus in December last year, the university will cap off 2019 with another light-filled wonderland – this time with a new theme and even more food options. USC director of marketing and external engagement Karyn Brinkley said Solar Nights had been so popular in its first year that the university was encouraged to offer it again. “We saw everyone from babies in prams to groups of friends enraptured by the displays and thoroughly enjoying the festival-like atmosphere of the campus at night. Again, Solar Nights will be a chance for the community to get curious in a festival-like atmosphere,” Karyn said. Last year’s theme focussed on Australian wildlife. This year there’s a new theme and new displays, as well as new food options, including Mexican, snacks, donuts, fruit ice-cream and coffee. Solar Nights will be free and open to the public from 6.30-9pm, December 13-22, at the USC’s campus at Sippy Downs.

Holiday dining
If you are on holidays this festive season and have visitors to entertain, it is a perfect time to get on the road and explore our lovely local townships and try a café or restaurant you haven’t been to. While locals have already discovered what is on offer at Café Mooloolah and at the Peachester Café Bakery, if you haven’t had the chance to check them out for yourself, I recommend you give them a go.
Peachester Café Bakery
Tasty treats, homemade goodies, lunchtime options and delicious coffee - what more could you want? If you’re out and about and driving through Peachester, make sure you pop in to see the welcoming team at Peachester Café Bakery. You’ll feel right at home in the beautiful natural grounds and the warm welcoming atmosphere will make you want to stay that little bit longer. The family-run business, owned by locals Steve and Debbie Van Der Sanden, is the perfect place to stop and enjoy a yummy homemade breakfast, lunch or treat and, of course, get your coffee fix with their beautiful Aromas roast. They also have a fantastic range of gluten-free options available. Open Tuesday-Sunday, 7am-2pm, walk, drive, ride, or trot down to Peachester Café Bakery and enjoy a break in the beautiful surrounds. Pets are welcome too!
Bakery Steve and Debbie from Peachester Cafe
Café Mooloolah
Mooloolah locals would be Tammy, Victoria and Julia from Cafe Mooloolah familiar with the changes that have taken place at the café on the corner of Bray Road and Jones Street over the years. With the most recent flurry of name changes and owners, locals can now rest assured there is a new café owner in town who has taken the reins and intends to stay. Now named Café Mooloolah, new owner Victoria, who already has two successful cafes under her belt, is excited about her vision to create a destination venue and hotspot for locals. Victoria said she loves meeting the locals and is relishing the country atmosphere of Mooloolah. However, a couple of things she says were lacking in Mooloolah were good coffee, hence the immediate change to Merlo coffee, and an affordable tasty dinner option for locals, so she has just started offering dinner on Thursday and Friday nights. Thursday nights are parmi and meal deal nights with a free drink offered with every meal, and Friday nights feature bar food with happy hour from 4-6pm. Café Mooloolah is fully licensed and offers both vegetarian and gluten-free options, all homemade with an all-day breakfast menu and great options for breakfast, lunch and everything in between. The café is open seven days from 7am, so while you’re enjoying the holiday season drop in and check it out.

Who do you think I am?
If you've harboured concerns about social media and, more particularly, online dating, those concerns may well be amplified by the contemporary French drama ‘Who You Think I Am’. The wonderful Juliette Binoche plays Claire, a 50-year-old professor of literature who, pointedly, is teaching the French play set in the 18th century – ‘Les Liaisons Dangereuses’ – to her class. The story is told chiefly in retrospect as Claire talks to her therapist. It soon becomes clear that Claire, still recovering from the breakup of her long-term marriage, has subsequently been dumped by her much younger boyfriend, Ludo. In order to spy on Ludo, the incensed Claire creates a false persona on social media, becoming Clara, a beautiful 24-year-old who works in fashion. Unsurprisingly, things don't 4 go according to Claire's plan and Ludo's flat mate, Alex, falls desperately in love with the non-existent Clara. Relationship confusion ensues! At the heart of this film is Claire's struggle to accept ageing and her fear that she has become invisible to men. (Viewers may find themselves lacking empathy at this point since the years seem to have been kind to the beautiful Binoche who, incidentally, was 54 when she made this film). Regardless, this is a theme that many women (and some men) may relate to in our youth/beauty obsessed culture. ‘Who You Think I Am’ could also be seen as a cautionary tale of how the anonymity of the modern phenomenon of social media enables deception and betrayal. For some, including Claire, this temptation proves irresistible. When: Saturday, December 14 Where: Maleny Community Centre, Maple Street Food and Drinks: Dinner 6-7 catered by Wild Rocket. Tea/coffee and homemade slices stand, drinks available from bar. Doors open at 6pm Movie: Screens from 7.15pm, running time 102 mins. Continuing from last week, here’s the second five of my top ten garden essentials: 6. Secateurs I carry a pair of secateurs everywhere when gardening. I’ve got a special holster that I wear hanging off an old belt. In that I’ve actually got two pairs of secateurs. One is a robust bypass style that I use to cut stalks, stems and small branches. The other is a finer flower snipper (like garden scissors) that I use to trim and to pick flowers and vegetables. Buy a good quality pair of each. You’ll have them for a long time, so you may as well have some that do a great job rather than just an average job. I’ve got a pair of Wiltshire secateurs that I bought in 1990 and they’re still as good as the day I bought them … it’s a pity that they don’t make them anymore. Felco is the industry standard for secateurs and Cyclone makes a good pair of flower scissors. Make sure they have a volute style spring (a flat piece of metal wound like a spring) rather than a standard coil type spring, as it’s much better ergonomically. Clean and sharpen both pairs often. 7. A big knife A good sized heavy bladed knife will let you cut twine, sharpen a stake, dig down and cut roots, and chop up material for the compost bin. I’ve got an old Wilshire stay sharp carving knife I found at an op shop but any quality similar kitchen knife is good. The steel should be quality stainless steel otherwise it will rust from outdoor use. Invest in a sharpening stone too. A medium grain one is fine - you don’t need to have a super-sharp blade you can shave with, just one that will cut easily. Paint the handle bright red ... trust me, it makes it much easier to find when you put it down in the rhubarb patch. 8. Garden trowel A garden trowel is an essential digging tool in a garden. I’ve got two. One is a narrow bladed solid aluminium tool I bought back in 1990. It’s fantastic when planting seedlings and digging out onion weed bulbs. This narrow trowel is probably the most used garden tool I own. The other is a standard width garden trowel. I prefer a good solid stainless steel blade and a well-made timber handle (rather than plastic). The plastic handles will eventually fall off. These trowels tend to get used for heavier jobs, so need to be able to stand up to some punishment. 9. Wheelbarrow How would a gardener exist without a wheelbarrow to move soil, rocks, plants, leaves and other material around the garden? Choose a wheelbarrow that meets your budget. Generally the more expensive they are, the more sturdy and longer lasting they will be. I like something that has a continuous tray (ie, no bolt heads sticking up that tend to catch on a shovel blade). I go for a steel body (just my preference) but the poly bodies are great too (just don’t put hot coals from a fire in them). And watch the cheaper painted tray models as the paint quickly peels off leaving untreated steel to rust away. This is the benefit of a poly tray. I‘ve got a quality Stanley brand with a powder coated steel tray. The narrow tyres are fine unless you have a very sandy or a very muddy yard, in which case the wider builders' tyre will help. 10. Garden rake Here again, I’ve got two types - a grass rake and a nail rake. The grass rake is used - as the name suggests - to rake up grass (and leaves, pebbles, bark, etc). The nail rake is used in a garden as a scourer and as a soil tiller. I like a heavy duty steel and timber handle nail rake but I find that grass rakes don’t really matter too much. I’ve got a plastic headed grass rake that has lasted about as long now as more expensive metal ones. I also like a nail rake with a good long handle. It makes it easier to reach right into a garden bed and is handy to poke things up high (like a frisbee in a tree).

Beerwah Golf Club
Contributed by Brenda Briese Saturday, November 30 was a stroke round with a field of 22 players. The winner was Joey Eccles on 71 nett followed by Sue Williamson 72 nett. NTPs: 2 – Sonia Kenway, 5 – Joey Eccles, 16 – Karen Kemp, 18 – Sue Woolway (second shot). BRD went to 76 nett. As the heat and dry continues, on Thursday the game was a stableford playing with only three clubs and a putter. It's quite different to say the least. Having said that, you can certainly improvise when you have to and the scores were still good. Due to the hot conditions there were only 44 ladies. Winner on 35 points Cheryl Jepson, runner up Lea Garner 34 points, second runner up on a count back Lyn Steele 34 points. NTPs: 2 – Toni Grant. 5 – Pauline Coyne, 16 – Sharon Phillips and 18 – Lea Garner (second shot). BRD went to 31 points. Next week sees the year out for the ladies’ competitions.
Maleny Golf Club
Contributed by Jenny Oxenham Tuesday, December 3: The club held a mixed 18-hole competition (temporary course with short 6th and 17th holes) with first place going to Jillian Jones with 42 points, runner up Tony Steffen 40 points and third Geoff Wilson 38 points. NTPs: 3 – Bob Whitely, 5 – Mike Railton, 8 – Christ Pottinger and 13 - Sarah Harding. Wednesday, December 4: The ladies club played an 18-hole (short temporary course) nett competition with first place going to Kerry Nieper with 66 nett, runner up Penny Edwards 68 nett on a count back from Mo Lawrence also 68 nett, and third Margaret Goodger with 70 nett on a count back from Heather Shortus also 70 nett. NTPs: 3 – Christine Lemon, 5 – Jillian Jones, 8 – Heather Shortus and 13 – Seri Tytherleigh. Saturday, December 7: The club held a pro-am with golfers playing 12 holes in a nett competition. Men’s first place went to Peter Huddart with 28 nett, runner up Steve Lawrence 25 nett and third Tom Hallam 23 nett on a count back. In our sponsor’s division Craig McPherson from Pacific Motors was first with 26 nett, Ben Haycroft from Workplace Centre runner up 25 nett and third Paul Viertel representing the Maleny Hotel with 23 nett. For the ladies, Annie Quamby was first with 28 nett and Debbie Hansen second 23 nett on a count back. The Maleny Golf Club wishes to thank everyone involved in running such a magnificent event, from the many volunteers who worked so hard to have the course in such a magnificent condition on the day to the hard working volunteers who ran around helping out physically from sand bunker work to cooking and serving all day. If I missed anyone you know who are, we appreciate you. Without these wonderful volunteers where would we all be in achieving this magnificent course? Judging from the glowing reports from all of the golfers, professionals and visitors alike, we have a great facility to offer the public. On behalf of the club, we wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year. If you wish to play a round or two on our course, just phone the clubhouse on 5499 9960 or go to our website www.malenygolfclub.com and book in for a game.
Contributed by Graeme Glover Our Wednesday night competition continues to produce close games. The shortened format of two games made all bowlers realise the importance of being on form immediately with no extra ends to make up for slow starts. Some surprising results still leaves a very open competition, which concludes on Wednesday, December 18. Recent hot weather made regular drink stops the order of the day for our regular Tuesday group. The Friday scroungers final for December was a hotly contested event thanks to both the quality of the competition and the weather. Congratulations to all who took part in the monthly finals format. Round winners were Miles Allen, Ian ‘Dicko’ Dickson and Ben Fawns. Good bowling guys. In a very close final Ben Fawns came out the winner. Well done to all players for a fun afternoon. Congratulations to all those members who travelled to our away games in Mapleton and Kilcoy to represent the club in our regular monthly commitments. A big thank you to all members who have played in any of these club visits throughput 2019. We are hoping for many more such visitations in the New Year after the typical summer break for bowls clubs. The bowls breakup is on Friday, December 20.
Glasshouse Country Bowls Club
Contributed by David Hayes Wednesday, December 4: Ladies graded and drawn triples – Eileen Pierce, Jenny Morris and Di Hume defeated Jill Kirchheiner, Viv James and Jenny Hobson 19-14. Well done to all the ladies on a great game. Thursday, December 5: Winners of the day were Ron Rix and Graham Nicholson with two wins + 75 points. Runners up with the highest score of 43 in either game were Sally Squires and Darcy Wilson. Lucky draw went to Doug Sweedman and Kevin Cook. The last Thursday bowls for the year is this week. Membership fees for 2020 are now due and are to be paid by December 31. The cost remains at $95. If you do not intend to renew please let our secretary know. If you pay after this date the cost will be $107.50. Our trophies and presentation luncheon is at 12noon this Saturday, December 14. Please arrive at this time to mingle with fellow club members and have a drink. Lunch will start at about 1pm, which is a full buffet-style meal. After lunch, presentations will begin, including club person of the year as well as most improved bowler of the year to be announced. We will then take to the green barefoot with a couple of closest to the spider games, etc. Dress is neat casual and cost is $25. Every member should be there for this great afternoon. Please buy tickets by this Thursday. If you don’t want lunch still feel free to come down. Thanks to Jacqui Hineman, Jimmy Tatum and other coaches who ran a skills bowls session over both Saturday and Sunday. We will do more of these in the future. Our aim as a club is always to improve our bowls on the green and there were many positive reports from those who attended. Ladies graded and drawn triples winners Di Hume, Jenny Morris and Eileen Pierce

Contributed by Ken Barker Donna Manning, Kath Smith and Bev Sockhill braved an impending storm to go to the lawn. Donna and Kath played Bev in a game of golf croquet to record a result of 4-2 to the doubleton. In a second game Kath beat Bev 4-2 and then everybody left because the storm, which never eventuated, threatened. Another day on the lawn the game was cut short by an approaching storm. Sarah Widin was just beginning to come good in a game against Ken Barker when it was agreed that safety was more important than glory. They bolted before scores could be recorded. Golf croquet games and wild shots were the order of the day in some of the games held on Monday and Tuesday, December 2-3. It might have something to do with the beginning of summer and the silly season. On Monday, 12 of the men’s group from the Maleny Uniting Church played while on Tuesday almost 20 people visited from Range Care. At no stage were there any signs of mallet rage, though on lawn 1B Vince Carbery and Ken played a wild drawn game where some extraordinary hoops were run. Sometimes in games the tactics are clear. Setting up the ball position for a good break is an individual thing, dependent on what shots you play well and even how you feel on the day.
In the attached photo Nick Cram can easily make hoop one but needs to set up from a cramped position. How does he do it? One of several solutions is that Nick roquets black as shown. He then stop-shots it to two feet from the jaws of hoop two, roquets yellow to take off to red from the north, hitting it softly from the jaws. From there he approaches hoop one off red sending it to the boundary side to give himself space so that he can send it to hoop three and approach yellow after making one. Now he has a classic four-ball break position and is on the highway to four back and cruising. The beauty of croquet and our club is that Nick may read this and say: “What a load of old cobblers!” and proceed down a totally different but equally successful line. Coaching for beginners and others is available from 8-10 am on Saturdays. These are popular sessions with accredited coaches in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Play days are Thursdays and Sundays at 2pm for 2.30pm. Our web address is https://rangecroquetatmaleny.org.au. For details contact president Sarah Widin on 0417 640 704, vice president Vince Carbery on 5494 2193 or secretary Priscilla Vickers 5494 3555.

Just for Laughs On Christmas Eve, Nathan thought it would be nice to buy his wife a little gift for the next day. Always short of money and unable to decide what to buy, Nathan entered the Myer cosmetic section and asked the sales woman: “How about some perfume?” She showed him a bottle costing $75. “Too expensive,” muttered Nathan. The woman returned with a smaller bottle for $50. "Oh dear," Nathan grumbled, “still far too much.” Growing rather annoyed at Nathan's meanness, the sales woman brought out a tiny $10 bottle and offered it to him.
ARIES March 21 - April 20 The Full Moon is in Gemini mid-week and falls across your financial sectors, asking you to bring full attention to a possible urgent matter. You need to take considerate action and that will work well in growing your money, love or business. Shrewd insights help you reestablish sound principals and plans for fiscal growth and security. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 The Full Moon in Gemini will give you an emotional impact. It may put you on edge about an urgent money or travel matter, or not enough money in the kitty. Over the weekend a strong relationship that has been forming deepens, giving each other a reservoir of love, caring and compassion. Exciting opportunities arrive next week. GEMINI May 22 - June 23 The Full Moon arrives in your sign mid-week so from Wednesday to Friday it accentuates interests that bring personal matters to the fore, especially those that depend on the cooperation of a partner. There is a strong urge to merge in financial or professional business affairs. You and others will be working out new rules. Fortunate new beginnings. CANCER June 24 - July 22 A relationship may take a serious turn, maybe into a long-time commitment with an influential person. Just remember your self-worth. This Full Moon period points to ongoing travel and holiday rest considerations. Generally, there are some late nights brewing for happy new experiences and warm feelings. You feel cared for with family love.

Nathan became really agitated. “What I mean,” he whined, “is I'd like to see something really cheap.” So the woman handed him a mirror.

Christmas spirit
It was just before Christmas and the magistrate was in a happy mood. He asked the prisoner in the dock: “What are you charged with?” The prisoner replied: “Doing my Christmas shopping too early.” “That's no crime”, said the magistrate. “How early were you doing this shopping?” “Before the shop opened,” the prisoner said.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 When Fire and Air get together this week, under your Sagittarius sign and the Full Moon in Gemini, there is often many chances to read other people intuitively as passions and intensity flare up! You and others are not likely to share the same views, especially about partnership funds. After the weekend it all becomes productive. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 This is the week to list down your problems and settle on a plan. Each evening you will appreciate family connections and the love that a partner brings. The weekend sees you being led towards friends, family and one special person in unions based on trust, support and mutual strength. You can strike it rich and land new opportunities. AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 This Full Moon week has the air sign of Gemini matching yours in Aquarius. This will certainly give your imagination a huge boost. Try not to let your idealism blind you into exaggerating the truth. Do you have a realistic handle on others and what they need and want? Jupiter and Uranus bring energy for fresh starts to all things now. PISCES February 20 - March 20 A relationship that has provided trust, security and support can deepen. This is because you are both committed to positive change and are warmly tuned to each other’s needs, desires and feelings. The weekend sees emotional connections flourish and you become a calm reservoir of support in family and social dynamics.

LEO July 23 – August 22 The Full Moon, being in Gemini mid-week, denotes that friends will play an important role in all your events now and over the next few days. Just be aware that you may have to handle a little disagreement, or a touch of somebody being in opposition to your ideas. A Leo needs a day out in the limelight and this could be yours over the weekend. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 There is a Full Moon in Gemini that falls across your work vs home axis. This may bring an urgent situation that requires attending to both ends. It would be wise then to run on your instincts and trust your hunches. You will be led into an influential and transformative relationship experience. Family or holiday plans require adjustments. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 This Full Moon mid-week, being in the sign of Gemini, flows well with your compatible Air sign. The main thing is to be realistic and practical if travel is on your agenda. Over the weekend there is good reason to expect others to meet you half way. Make sure you do the same! From Sunday, home life is apt to be exhilarating for you now. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 A Gemini Full Moon this week grabs your full attention about a travel agenda or a financial opportunity. Either way, extremes and exaggeration are possible throughout the weekend. Your awareness of emotional knowledge leads you on with psychological accuracy. A time to use your intuition and compassion. A deepening relationship.
