Hi Everyone...
on the Cover
It isn’t often that you can say that a life size statue of Mr Fourex (as in XXXX beer) on the back of a truck has cruised past your office. However, this was exactly how my afternoon unfolded recently, as our block adjoins our neighbour, Club Glass House, and I happened to be grabbing a cuppa in the kitchen and looking out the window when I saw him. As I realised what I was seeing, I have to say I wondered what would have possessed someone to grab a log, and then carve this fella out of it with a chainsaw? And then I thought to myself that this is probably one of the more unexpected raffle prizes we have ever written about! When people ask me what they have to do to get on the front cover, I generally reply with something vague like, “come up with something a little bit quirky, different or unusual”. So, I figure I have to give Club Glass House’s manager Sharon Bochow top points for this week’s rather unexpected cover! And with all of the funds generated from the raffle and the associated fishing comp going to the Children’s Hospital, it is definitely a very worthy cause! And I really hope that Mr Fourex goes to a good home! Regards,
Doug Johnston, Sharon Bochow and Dan Godfrey with Mr Fourex (centre) See story page 5

Glasshouse Country & Maleny News
Local News Hammer to fall on old Maleny Police Station Stepping back into the old Maleny Police Station on Maple Street may not everyone’s idea of a fun Friday morning. For some, it may throw up memories best kept under lock and key. But for many other locals, there is an opportunity to look through the building one last time before it goes under the hammer at auction this Friday. The old station served the Maleny and surrounding community since 1954. The station building was purpose built for policing in that year, adjacent to the existing house which then acted as the police residence. Back in April, the new station opened at the current Macadamia Street site, which meant that the 60-yearold office, residence and 2,344sqm of land was surplus to requirements and so earmarked for sale. According to Desley Malone from the Maleny Cultural and Historical Society, the first officer assigned to Maleny was Constable T. Lugge in 1954. This was in a temporary capacity, and that same year Constable J. Williams, of Landsborough, was then permanently appointed as the officer in charge of the station. Excluded from the sale is the infamous police lock up which remains at the rear of the property. Desley recounted stories of local youths being rounded up after ‘Guy Fawkes night’ hijinks and locked up for their own (and the community’s) safety. On a brighter side, she also told how local children used it for tea parties.
Photo courtesy Ray White Maleny Happily, the lock up has been donated to the Pioneer Village at Maleny, and so will be removed and added to their collection of historic local buildings and displays. The auction, undertaken by Ray White Maleny, will take place at the Old Police Station this Friday, July 13, at 10am. The premises will be open a half an hour prior to allow for inspections and so that potential buyers can register for the auction. According to Ray White Maleny agent Geoff Coughlan, there has been a considerable level of interest shown in the sale from prospective buyers, but they have been tight lipped about what their plans would be for the prime commercial location. Local affordable housing group ‘Smart Living Society Limited’ had been in negotiations with the State Government about the potential to lease the site to provide eleven small, low cost housing dwellings for local rental. However, recently the group reported that the site has been deemed too steep for their proposed affordable housing development. “We know how to build on ‘steep’ in Maleny. However, we respect the department’s decision. We are pretty devastated by the decision because we really understand the need for this type of accommodation in Maleny,” the group wrote on their Facebook page.

NBN has commenced legal proceedings to have the proposed Burgess Street Maleny wireless broadband tower approved on appeal through the Planning and Environment Court. As previously reported in GC&M News, Sunshine Coast Council rejected the application for the Maleny tower, along with a similar tower at Doonan, in late May, citing multiple conflicts with the Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme, and that “the proposal has not demonstrated any other relevant matter (planning need) to justify or override the identified conflicts”. This application attracted 73 submissions in total, with 69 being deemed to have been ‘properly made’ and all of them against the tower at that site. In their appeal submission, NBN contend that
the development does not conflict at all with the planning scheme, but in the event that the judge finds it does, NBN then suggest that “there are other relevant matters to justify approving the Application despite the conflict”. In similar circumstances in 2017, NBN successfully appealed council’s refusal of tower applications at Beerwah, Glass House Mountains and Eudlo. Sunshine Coast Council has been named as the ‘respondent’ and as such they have ten business days from when the appeal was lodged (July 2) to notify the court that they will be fighting the appeal. The same situation applies to the locals who submitted ‘properly made’ submissions against the development as part of the application assessment process.
Preserve your memories Have you got a bunch of old family photos you’d like to digitise and preserve? During weekdays from Monday July 16 until Friday August 3, Beerwah Library will have a photo preservation station set up to digitise your photos, slides and negatives. The ‘preservation station’ will be available daily for bookings in slots of up to two hours from 9.30am-11.30am, noon until 2pm, and 2.30pm until 4.30pm. Users must have intermediate computer skills to operate a Windows laptop (or if you are not
confident using technology, bring someone along with you to help). This free Tech Savvy Seniors Queensland program has been funded by Telstra and the Queensland Government through the State Library of Queensland and Department of Communities. You can digitise printed photographs (up to A4 size), film negatives (35mm, medium format, 4 x 5 inch), photo slides (35mm) and documents (up to A4 size). Bookings are essential by calling 5475 8989.

Win XXXX man for charity The annual Club Glass House charity fishing competition is back for another bumper weekend of family fishing fun to be held from Friday August 10 through to Sunday August 12. Now in its seventeenth year, the competition, which doubles as a fundraiser for children in hospital, will once again be supporting the Sunshine Coast Hospital charity Wishlist. This year, along with generous donations from sponsors including a major prize draw of a week’s fishing holiday on Fraser Island and $300 cash prize in each of the eight categories, a unique prize has been donated to headline the raffle draw. The generous folk at Spracon have donated a hand-carved statue of the XXXX man. The ultimate man cave inclusion or general talking point, the statue – which is estimated to weigh between 300 and 400kg – was originally won by Janice Godfrey from Spracon a few years ago at the Killarney Show. Realising the statue’s fundraising potential, Janice has kindly donated it as a major raffle item for this year’s fundraiser. The statue is currently on display at the club and required some heavy lifting mechanical logistics involving a truck and a mini-excavator to get it into place. Sharon Bochow from Club Glass House said she is really excited about the interest that ‘XXXX man’ is gaining as a raffle prize for the competition. Tickets (just $5 each) can be

purchased anytime in the lead up to the event by dropping in to the club. Sharon said that this year will be the seventh year that the competition will support Wishlist, and while the competition has been running for many years now and has become a highly anticipated drawcard on the fishing community calendar, it has always been all about raising funds for children. Wishlist CEO Lisa Rowe acknowledges that Club Glass House has been a long-time supporter of Wishlist, raising in excess of $21,000 for the Children’s Ward over the years. “The fishing competition is a popular event for the club each and every year, and Sharon Bochow is a huge driver of this campaign,” Ms Rowe said. “We are extremely grateful to be the beneficiary of the club’s fundraising efforts and it’s fantastic to see the hinterland community making such a difference to families locally.” Once again Sharon is keen to acknowledge the generous support from local sponsors that helps make this event such a memorable drawcard on the fishing community calendar. Each year entrants are drawn from all over the South East, from the Gold Coast to Gympie. With a great atmosphere, the fishing competition involves a great deal of community spirit and good will, while raising funds for a fantastic cause. Recently the competition has enjoyed renewed interest from local families with a record

Passion for fashion By Sonia Clark Stylish Landsborough mum Krystle Doyle Kirk is busy turning heads beside the racetrack as she embraces her inherent love of fashion on the field. The local mum of two young boys is thrilled to have been named ‘Most Fashionable Female’ at the recent Caloundra Cup held at Corbould Park. This fashion win follows on from a ‘runner up’ placing for best dressed female at the Doomben ‘Girls’ Day Out’ held earlier this year, and Krystle is excited to have been recognised with two top-10 placings in three of the Winter Racing Carnival events she has competed in. Krystle has spent years following the fashion on the fields of the major racing carnivals, however her own interest in competing in these fashion events only eventuated relatively recently following the birth of her second son. Krystle, who grew up in Townsville, says she comes from a racing loving family (her grandfather is a horse trainer) and she and her family always visited the country race days where they were always encouraged to dress up. “My grandmother was a wonderful seamstress and she always made the most beautiful outfits for my cousin and me to wear at these events,” says Krystle. For her stylish win at the Caloundra Cup, Krystle spent weeks exploring Pinterest. An African dress in Ankara fabric caught her eye and her distinctive dress was made by a seamstress in Nigeria. As part of her win, Krystle received a fantastic prize pack that included flights, accommodation, transfers, and reserved seating for two to the prestigious Ladies Oaks Day at Flemington racetrack in November. Krystle already has an image in her mind and looks forward to bringing her imagination to life with a vintage inspired outfit. Maleny local invites world to explore Sunshine Coast
DENTURE CLINIC
Tourism and Events Queensland is using locals to share the state’s tourism secrets, and recently they have given Maleny local and owner of Brouhaha Brewery Matt Jancauskas the opportunity to share the beauty of our local area and to invite others to come and see for themselves how special it is here. They have created a beautifully crafted 90-second video, sharing the story and inspiration behind Mr Jancauskas’s Brewery and Restaurant, which is being promoted together with a series of destination blogs aimed at key target markets in South East Queensland, Sydney and Melbourne. The campaign is jointly funded by Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ) and Visit Sunshine Coast (VSC). TEQ Chief Executive Officer Leanne Coddington said: “Now more than ever word of mouth is a primary source of holiday planning and this series makes the most of the trend, showcasing Queensland locals sharing their secrets and inviting travellers to explore their region. “Matt’s passion for the brewing business is clear throughout the video, and the way he describes the local produce as the inspiration for the beers makes you want to go and try them for yourself. “This is such a genuine, Queensland approach to tourism marketing and visitors can expect more of that famous hospitality when they visit.”

Visit Sunshine Coast Chief Executive Officer Simon Latchford said featuring a real local such as Matt to tell his story and inspire travellers to explore the Sunshine Coast, is an exciting and powerful marketing tool. “The video brings to life and showcases a different side to the Sunshine Coast than travellers might be familiar with,” he said. “The region is so much more than just stunning beaches; we also have a lush hinterland and vibrant food and craft brewery scene that is really taking off. “Matt’s passion for the Sunshine Coast is obvious and highlights another reason for visitors to explore the region for the first time, encourage repeat visitation or stay longer.” To see the video, go to YouTube.com and search for ‘Matt Jancauskas on the Sunshine Coast’.

Business News Landsborough quarry knockback appealed
eastonlawyers
your local lawyers Open 8.30am to 5pm Monday to Friday
p 5494 3511
In our August 23, 2017 edition we highlighted a proposal to build a quarry at Landsborough on a parcel of land known as Alf’s Hill (or Alf’s Mountain), situated between Hapgood Road and the Bruce Highway. The site can be seen from the Bruce Highway as the large forested hill on the western side, about two kilometres north of the Bells Creek interchange. Surrounded by State Forest and National Park, the 64 hectare parcel of land is owned by civil construction company Shadforths and is currently zoned as rural land. The development application (MCU16/0289) identified approximately 6,420,000 cubic metres of total extractable material which would be suitable for the planned Bruce Highway upgrade works and for the residential and associated developments at Harmony (Palmview) and Aura (Caloundra South). Operations would include some rock blasting as well as crushing and screening of material onsite. Plans submitted with the application show that the haulage route would traverse some internal
forestry roads, onto Hapgood Road, then via Forestry Road and Dianella Road to join the Bruce Highway at the new Bells Creek interchange. It appears that approximately 100 truck movements a day are planned. In May this year, Sunshine Coast Council refused the application on a number of grounds including impacts to vegetation, fauna, hydrology and visual amenity. Council also considers that, as the area is flagged as a ‘Further Investigation Area’ (where the proposed Beerwah East urban expansion will occur) it is then an incompatible land use under the Planning Scheme. Not happy with this decision, Shadforths has commenced a legal battle with council in the Planning and Environment Court, looking to have the council decision overturned. In their appeal they assert that their proposal complies with the relevant assessment benchmarks and that it is not contrary to the Planning Scheme provisions. A date is yet to be set for the matter to be heard.
Plastic bag ban impact study

With the recent introduction of the ban on single use plastic bags in retail stores in Queensland, University of the Sunshine Coast researchers will be tracking the impact by monitoring the marine debris found inside dead sea life. Lecturers in animal ecology Dr Kathy Townsend and Dr Dominique Potvin will lead the study to determine the impact of debris on endangered marine creatures. Dr Townsend, an expert on marine debris in sea turtles and other marine species, said the project would also allow researchers to measure the effectiveness of the state-wide ban on plastic bags which came into effect on July 1. “Plastic bags are notoriously dangerous for turtles and sea birds who mistake them for food and choke, or get tangled among them until they cannot swim or fly,” Dr Townsend said. “The marine debris surveys will be conducted every six months, providing an opportunity to measure the success that the ban on single-use plastic bags is having in reducing the amount of plastics ending up in these waterways.”

The mantle has been passed
After nine and a half years, not quite long enough for long service leave, the owner of Rosetta Books in Maleny, Anne Brown, felt the time was right for her to have someone else take over the business. Having found the perfect buyers in long term Maleny locals Jan and Jeff Cornfoot, the official handover happened last Wednesday, July 4. Jan has taken over the reins with the assistance of daughter Sarah. They bring with them a wealth of knowledge after having set up ‘Capers’ bookstore, now trading as an online store. They are particularly excited to continue the great work Anne has started in making Rosetta Books the thriving community hub it is today. Confident that Rosetta Books is in safe hands, Anne is looking forward to having some down time as well as now having the time to become more involved in the local community. She also can’t wait to spend some of that free time reading, and she will, of course, now have more time to consider the choices in her footie tipping.
Post Office on the move
While the township of Beerburrum isn’t that big, there is always plenty happening at the local commercial properties. Last week has seen a massive shift, with the Post Office relocating to the other side of the road! So if you go searching for Ron at the Post Office, keep heading up the road a bit to the Beerburrum Service Centre and you will find him co-located with Jeff and Ann.
Maleny Commerce Networking .. Ann leave Rosettas Evenings Maleny Commerce has this year kicked off a Books
series of Networking Evenings to complement their monthly breakfast meetings. The first of these events was held just before Easter at Brouhaha and the next one will be on Thursday July 19 to celebrate the New Financial Year. The idea behind the nights is to have a chance to catch up with other local business people, make some contacts and enjoy a drink and a chat straight after work, 5.30pm to 7pm. The venue this time will be at Pomodoras on Obi. Tickets, $15 for members and $20 for non-members, include canapes. If you would like to attend, head to the chamber’s website and make an on-line booking.
Update with Ursula Starkovsky Chamber President
Reflecting on The Glassies – our very own Small Business Awards Thank you, Andrew Powell MP for organising and presenting this year’s Glassies and thank you all the businesses who took part. The Hideaway was a fitting venue and the finger food was delicious. Getting nominated for an award is a great way to promote a business without the usual great expense. For every business, be it large or small, the cost of advertising and marketing is usually a real problem. Having local awards definitely helps to keep the costs down and at the same time promote the business to the community. I would just like to remind business owners that the Chamber is hosting “round table discussions” with topics of marketing, and advertising in the digital world as well the printed world. Come along and get inspired. Tracie Sanim from Splash Marketing and PR is hosting these discussions. Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday July 17 from 5.30pm at the Beerwah Hotel. Cost to attend is $5 and nibbles will be served. As always, we welcome guests.

The book is entitled ‘Storm Clouds and Silver Linings – My Journey’ and copies have been circulated throughout a number of coffee and gift shops in Maleny, Landsborough, Buderim, and Brisbane ahead of the official book launch this Saturday. Due to its popularity already, Tom is humbled to advise that a second print run is now required – which reflects a wonderful acknowledgement of his writing especially given the book is still to be launched. GC&M News caught up with Tom recently to ask a few questions and find out more. Q: How long have you lived in Landsborough? A: We have been living here for the past four years, however I still spend time working in Brisbane and SEQ generally. Travel has always provided me with opportunities to connect with people from all walks of life and the countryside and environs around us. Q: What is the book about and did you do any writing courses to assist in publication? A: The book contains 50 poems going back to 1976 when I first joined the Navy as a legal officer. It includes descriptions of the world around us, and is like a diary of my life, my observations of people and nature, the impact of weather (especially storms), flora and fauna, the country and the city and how they connect, aging,
the future and my extensive work as a mediator and peace maker. On my journey to publication, I took some creative writing lessons from Ms Linda Henderson who used to run a book shop, ‘Autumn Leaves’, in Buderim and has many authors from the Sunshine Coast Hinterland as past and current students. Q: What inspired you to create this work? A: My inspiration comes from everything around us, be it the family, the wider community, nature, the elements, beauty, the seasons, love, life and death and what mechanisms we can muster to cope with life’s many challenges and pressures in a changing world. How can we ensure our resilience and coping skills are up to scratch? Q: Can you tell us more about your life growing up? A: I was fortunate to grow up in a household where art was a constant, in that my father painted all his life. Some of his work features in my book and shows his passion for the Australian landscape, despite having grown up in the greener and softer environs of the Czech hills and valleys. When living in the Bathurst migrant camp, where I was born, he quickly adapted to the harsher drought-affected countryside. He loved the endless plains, valleys and hills, dry creek beds, clouds, farm houses, broken fences and dilapidated iron sheds. They were to become his inspiration and were portrayed hundreds of times on board, canvas, Masonite, fibreglass, and any material he could utilise. These paintings have found their way across the world and
are now appearing in many an auction house particularly in Sydney and Melbourne. Q: What type of reception has the book received? A: I have recently added 20 new reviews to my website and was pleased that John Marsden wrote a review. However, the reviews that mean even more are the deeply heartfelt ones, where my words trigger some deep emotional feeling based on an individual’s personal experience. Tom’s book is available from www.tomstodulkaauthor.com and via Amazon. A number of local coffee and gift shops have copies including Henry & Co at Landsborough. Tom’s book launch will be held this Saturday, July 14, at 2pm at 34 Gloucester Road, Buderim.

Maleny expansion continues
A recent application to Sunshine Coast Council continues the residential expansion of Maleny. The application to reconfigure two rural residential land parcels off Tallowwood and Candle Vine Streets into 43 residential lots is a continuation of the allowable development within that southern precinct of Maleny. Covering almost 28 hectares, the proposed development will deliver 43 rural residential housing lots of varying sizes from 3,000sqm to 8,600sqm. Included in the development will be new environmental reserves and a 1.1km road. The new estate, planned to be released over four stages, will feed traffic into Tallowwood Street via new estate roads which connect into the ends of both Tallowwood Street and Candle Vine Street. The impact assessable development application will require to be publicly notified and so allow for submissions from interested locals. To see more on the application, go to www.pdonline.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and search for ‘RAL18/0089’.

Christmas in July morning tea with Lisa
By Judith Ross-Smith There is a treat in store for guests on July 20 at The Orangery Maleny … the elegant restaurant on the Art on Cairncross corner of Mountain View Road, where delicate tea cups and antiques are part of the décor, the food is to die for and Lisa Plucknett will be there to keep you laughing. The morning tea with a Christmas theme is a fundraiser for the Spring market fete to be held at St George’s Anglican Church grounds in September. Morning tea starts at 10am at a cost of $20 per person. Make up a table and ring the parish office on 5499 9130 or Shirley Moreland on 5446 0171 to book a place. It is not only morning tea, however, Lisa Plucknett will entertain with her violin, her whacky impromptu poems and musical trivia quizzes. GC&M News readers may remember her hilarious poem published recently about how she didn’t get her invitation to Meghan and Harry’s wedding. “It’s all good clean fun – except when it could sometimes be a bit risqué! Guests should polish up their Puccini, mind their Mama Mia; and tables can pool their knowledge to win,” says the violinist and author of four books of Pam Ayres style verse. So, you’ll have fun, and may even win the lucky door prize or one of the superior raffles. Don’t forget to put the date of the Spring Fair in your diaries, it will be held in the grounds of St George’s Church on the corner of Tallowwood Road and Walkers Drive from 9am to 2pm Saturday September 8.
Community benefit from gardens
This year saw the Maleny Garden Club hold another successful ‘Gardening on the Edge’ event in June, where they were able to raise $15,000 which has been presented to a number of local groups. At the club’s monthly meeting held at the Old Witta School, event convenor Jan Maguire presented cheques to: Rebecca Francis – Maleny State School Chaplaincy, Hayden Greathead – Maleny High School Chaplaincy, Louise Hickey – Hospital Auxiliary, Peter Fitzgibbon – Maleny Men's Shed, Joe Eastmure – Maleny Rural Fire Brigade, and Jenny McCafferty – Range Care (pictured with Jan Maguire). The Maleny Garden Club was able to raise these funds for the various community groups through
the hard work of the both the garden club members and the following garden owners who happily prepared and opened their gardens to the public:
Linda and Paul Doyle
Dianna and Sandy Begbie
Lorraine and Ben Fawns

Shirley volunteers with St Vincent de Paul in the local community, and she keeps busy crocheting blankets and other items that she donates for those in need. Helen generously knits and donates hundreds of Trauma Teddies for use by emergency services workers, for health and hospitals services each year. Community Groups Deeper understanding of Bankfoot House Members of local heritage groups Friends of Bankfoot House and the Caloundra Family History Research recently attended a meeting to hear Associate Professor Dr Jon Prangnell from the University of Queensland School of Social Science talk about his archaeological investigations at Bankfoot House. This archaeological research was funded by the Sunshine Coast Council with several students from the Sunshine Coast University having the opportunity to visit Professor Prangnell and his students on the location. Dr Prangnell showed photos of the excavation sites and the items found in them, as well as explaining the reason why those areas were chosen for excavation, and the historical significance of the buildings that have occupied the site. The stories of the people who have occupied Bankfoot House, from the pioneers, William and Mary Grigor, helped us understand the trials they

Morris House Neighbourhood Centre News
Contributed by A.W. Husband, Secretary Morris House has been busy so there has not been a newsletter for a while. We had a break in and this meant a lot of work cleaning up the damage that was caused and getting the damage repaired and replacements for windows, cupboards, etc. A big thank you to the volunteers who helped clean up. You would all be aware that single use plastic bags are no longer available at supermarkets. We still have some bags but when these are used up, Morris House will not be able to provide reusable bags so we ask all clients to bring their own if they need food, bread, etc. Tax Help will be starting about the middle of July. This is a free service for those who need help with basic tax returns. We will advertise the exact starting date as soon as ATO notify us. Please call 5494 1225 for an appointment – some conditions apply. From this week, Morris House will be open for more hours. Monday and Friday will still be 9.30am-1pm but we will be open 9.30am-4pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. This will give clients a more flexible timeframe.

Councillor Rick Baberowski spoke on behalf of the Sunshine Coast Council, challenging those present to continue showing practical love and support to the community.
This follows our recent Flashback Friday Facebook post from June 1988 about when Prince Leonard of Hutt River Principality toured a number of local farms, which the Glasshouse Country News covered at the time. Hutt River Principality is Australia’s first self-proclaimed independent ‘micro-nation’ in Western Australia’s wheat-belt region of Kalbarri. “Prince Leonard visited Beerwah recently as he was keen to see how pineapples are grown…” the article explained. Prince Leonard, who is now aged 92, was accompanied by his Charge d’affaire Lord Michael King. In response to our question of what local farm did he visit thirty years ago, Bob Banner from Peachester sent us in the answer. “It was actually The Pineapple Industries Research Farm at Beerwah (commonly known as the C.O.D. Farm after the C.O.D. who set up the property),” said Bob. “The Prince made a surprise visit to the farm and the photo shows him chatting to the farm manager, a much younger Bob Banner.” Afterwards the Prince and Lord Michael King took afternoon tea with Bob and Joy Banner, before presenting the Banner kids (Martin and Paul now in their early forties) with a set of Hutt River Province postage stamps. Recalling the visit, Bob described the Prince as “an interesting and knowledgeable character”. To read the whole story, go to our Facebook page and read the post put up on June 22. Home care packages – it’s your choice There has been so much change in the Australian aged care sector in recent years. One of the major reforms that was introduced was changes to home care packages. Home care packages are metaphorical buckets of money that are assigned to people over 65 years of age to ensure that they can access the support and services they need to remain living independently in their home longer. There are four levels of home care packages: level one, which is valued around $8,000, through to level four, which is valued around $50,000. One of the most significant changes is home care package recipients can now choose their own provider. RangeCare’s CEO, Jenny McCafferty, said that RangeCare has experienced dramatic growth in the number of people with home care packages.
“Before the changes, RangeCare was limited by the government to only deliver 18 home care packages,” said Jenny. “Now that people can choose their provider, and they can carry their bucket of funds to whichever provider they want, we are now supporting more than 70 locals.” Another change to home care packages means that it is easier for people to change providers if they are unhappy with the service and support they receive. “This is an important change because previously it was difficult to change providers,” said Jenny. Home care packages is just one of the government’s support schemes available to people over 65. To find out more visit www.rangecare.com.au or call our Maleny office on 5429 6152.
Things to know about home care packages • You apply for a home care package through My Aged Care My Aged Care is a government organisation that registers your need, schedules and conducts an ACAT assessment with you, and determines the level of home care package you can receive. • Being APPROVED FOR and being ASSIGNED a home care package are different things If you are APPROVED for a home care package, you are placed on a national wait list for when funding becomes available. You will be ASSIGNED a package when funding becomes available. People have been waiting up to 18 months between being approved and being assigned a package. • You can choose your provider

Bushland working bee The Coochin Creek Bushland Group will be holding its next working bee on Tuesday July 17 from 8am to 11ish. At the last working bee Jeanette Nobes gave us a presentation on invasive weeds, in particular the highly invasive weed Morning Glory. It was a fascinating but very sobering insight into the spread and the difficulties of controlling that weed. Many thanks, Jeanette. This month we will return to clearing invasive weeds in the area around the rock holes. We will target a new outbreak of mother of millions on the other side of the creek and continue to clean up the Glycine we have been working on for some time. As always, anybody interested in bushland care, or weed identification and control, is welcome to join us. The Coochin Creek Bushland Group is part of the Sunshine Coast Nature Conservation Program. Participation is free and tea is provided during the working bee. Participants are advised to wear boots, a long-sleeved shirt, long pants, sun hat, and to carry a water bottle. All equipment required, including tick repellent, will be supplied. We will start by meeting at the gate to the Caralan Park, which is at the corner of Emma Place and Caralan Way in Beerwah. For more information please contact Gordon on 0406 638 544.

For most of my life, I didn’t pay much attention to birds. Only when I moved to Australia in my 40s did I become the kind of person who dashes outside when a Black Cockatoo wails overhead, sighs in bliss at the serenade of a Butcherbird, and grabs my camera when a King Parrot visits
our bird feeder. Birds are present in every corner of every continent or island and even across open oceans. The breadth of their adaptations is staggering, from enormous flightless Emus to little Weebills smaller than some insects, with nests as tiny as a walnut or as large as haystacks. With their varied diets, birds play vital roles in pollinating, spreading seeds, controlling nuisance insects and rodents, regulating prey populations, and even providing food for other native species (and humans). Birds build their own homes, some incredibly intricate. Some species, such as Rainbow Lorikeets and Galahs, are highly social, while others are solitary (e.g. male Satin Bowerbirds). Some migratory birds travel huge distances e.g. Red-necked Stints travel 25,000km between the Arctic and Australia. Some bird species are highly intelligent, such as Cockatoos and Crows, both of which are known to use tools. Despite their amazing abilities, birds cannot protect their own habitats, their wetlands or their fisheries from humans. Habitat destruction, cats, windows, vehicles and pesticides kill billions each year. Amazingly, against all odds, birdsong continues to fill every corner of the globe. These special creatures deserve our care and protection. Do you have an hour or two a month to spare? Would you like to learn more about the flora and fauna in your area, and meet new friends? You Said It Great muscle
What a wonderful day at the Muscle on the Mountain in Maleny on Sunday 1, with everyone turning out to raise funds for Prostate Cancer Queensland and the Maleny Hospital Auxiliary. The skies were overcast but that did not stop 962 cars being put “on show”. People travelled from the Gold Coast and Brisbane suburbs as well as our northern regions of Bundaberg, Gladstone and places in between. Mark “Fletch” Fletcher was in attendance and collecting many and varied vehicles and characters on film for the Classic Restos program. The event however, could not survive without the support of local businesses and individuals. We would like to take a small space to thank those supporters: The Maleny Show Society, Easton Lawyers, Bridle Guest House, Half Moon Hideaway, Elders Real Estate, Maleny Hotel, Shannon’s Insurance, Bowden’s Own Car Care, Motor Roadworthy Australia, Maleny Auto Spares, Monica’s Café, Marsha Photography, The Lions Club of Maleny Blackall Range, Maleny Rotary Club, Maleny Girl Guides and the Maleny Hospital Auxiliary, along with Damian Barnes for your time and fabulous voice. We look forward to another successful year in 2019 and hope that our caterers will be available then as they did have a great fundraising day. Thank you to the Rangers Soccer Club, Naval Cadets, Bushrangers Rugby Union, and Maleny Junior Cricket for a wonderful array of food items. Voluntary assisted dying
Several state MPs attended a forum on voluntary assisted dying (VAD) held at Parliament House in Brisbane earlier this week. The event was organised by the Clem Jones Trust and Dying With Dignity Queensland with the support of Speaker Curtis Pitt and we thank him and those MPs present for their interest. Our forum focused on the urgent need for a State Parliamentary Inquiry to assess expert evidence and sift fact from fiction to help draft new laws. Queensland is the only state that has not examined VAD through its State Parliament. The Queensland Government wants to wait and see how Victoria’s VAD law operates after it takes effect. That means nothing happens here until after mid2019 despite the fact a meaningful inquiry would take 12 months at the bare minimum. 18
CONDITIONS Please keep your letters under 300 words, your name, address and daytime phone number must be supplied. Letters must focus on issues and not be personal attacks on individuals. Letters may be edited.
Evidence to Victoria’s inquiry showed that at least one person a week took their own life in that state in sometimes horrible, tragic, and dreadfully lonely circumstances because of the absence of VAD as a legal and safe choice. The situation is likely to be the same in Queensland. The longer we delay an inquiry and new laws the more people suffer. There is plenty an inquiry could do right now to examine how VAD laws overseas are working, and plenty of experts whose evidence an inquiry could consider right now. Sadly, there is also no shortage of challenging personal stories from Queenslanders that an inquiry could hear right now. David Muir Chair, the Clem Jones Trust
Proposed communal accommodation
I am writing in great concern about the proposed rooming accommodation, with communal kitchen, living and laundry, to be built in Landsborough. How degrading and demoralising to have to share your basic living areas with other families. Surely every family is entitled to have their own kitchen, living and laundry areas? How would any of the councillors like to share any of their home space with another family? You go in to do some cooking, but first have to clean up the mess of a previous person. You go to, what, a communal refrigerator, and pantry, and the groceries you would have been allocated to one shelf space, may have been taken by previous kitchen users? Time to do the washing, but oh no, other people are using the washing machine. After the stress of that, where can you go to relax with your family, have a talk with them, watch your favourite television show or listen to your music? That's right there is a communal living area. But there are other families already taking up the lounge, with their dirty boots on it, watching their shows. There would be no privacy in what should be everyone's individual home. This is going to cause so much stress and anger, which in turn will overflow onto their children and partners, and extend to the outer community as well. Landsborough is a lovely rural town of low density living and a low crime rate. If this horrendous proposal of this way of living goes ahead, there will be a greater degree of anger at the injustice of the world. Councillors and mayor of the Sunshine Coast Council, please put yourselves in this proposed position, and ask yourselves if it would be one in which you or your family would ever be happy to live in. This is Australia, not a third world country. Let's keep it that way. Betty Descovich Former Landsborough resident
Thanks for the support
I’d like to thank Ursula Starkovsky and the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce for their support over the past week and into the future. With the support of the chamber I am having a meeting with the council next week in regards to the cost increase of their land permits. This planned increase is substantial and is going to affect all outdoor activities that require land permits on the Sunshine Coast.
As a health and fitness business that works hard within the community on improving their fitness it is always great opportunity to get outdoors and do our group fitness classes. Seeing our community moving and enjoying their fitness in our park areas is always rewarding. Being a small business owner it is extremely hard to get council to hear our voice without the backing of the chamber. This is why the chamber is so important for us as small business owners to give us a stronger voice. The more members the chamber has the stronger the chamber becomes. Thanks again to the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce. Taz Calandruccio All in One Fitness Centre Beerwah

It’s good to see at last state governments are taking the plunge and acting on the removal of plastics as a waste source that's killing marine life. But we haven't got to stop there! Dead zones - what are they? The name says it all, dead zones are areas along the sea floor where oxygen levels are so low they no longer sustain marine life. Hypoxia is a deficiency in the amount of oxygen reaching any organisms' tissue and is a widespread and growing problem in the Earth's oceans as industrial waste, fertiliser runoff from industrial agriculture and climate disruption increasingly aggravates the crisis. Professor Nancy Rabalais is from the Department of Oceanography at Louisiana State University, USA. Her and her colleagues' research has shown that there are now more than 400 coastal lowoxygen areas around the globe, and the number of dead zones started to double roughly every decade beginning in the 1960s. She pointed to nitrogen and phosphorous pollution as fuelling the dead zone, and it includes sewage treatment plants, other industrial facilities and animal feeding operations. She said: "The biggest contributor is fertiliser that flows off agricultural land. The second is the bias in our overall food culture toward animal products, which magnifies all of this. Too much is going into meat production.” Basically, our diets are killing the oceans, and that is apart from the plastics strangling the fish and sea creatures. Dr Elaine Leung, a marine biologist, set up an organisation called Sea Smart School, where she's educated and empowered thousands of young people to take action on the oceans. Sea Smart teaches youth from kindergarten to Grade 12 about ocean issues and how to help. Take a look at her site and follow on in your daily life. See: https://seasmartschool. com/. What a wonderful performance
Iolanthe. I found the professionalism staggering. Fairies and pollies caught the spirit of G&S in the recent production in Maleny. Singing was loud and clear. Lines were not muffed. Dance was full of vigour. What a tremendous effort must have gone into this. Whatever was the budget? Thank you for a wonderful performance that held me enthralled for every minute of it. NAIDOC Week
By Scarlett Dickson and Nayten Fish, Grade 5 Mooloolah State School celebrated NAIDOC week early this year, with classes taking turns to go into the amazing Goombucca bus and talk about the Gubbi Gubbi culture. They showed us where the Gubbi Gubbi people were from and the fascinating things they do. We painted each other’s faces with Ochre like boy and girl Gubbi Gubbi warriors! We also went to throw boomerangs. It was harder then it looked because it was all about the “flick”. We also participated in “Murri Maths” where we were connecting to country using nature as the maths resources. We learnt that “Murri” is a general term for Aboriginal people born in Queensland. Everyone participated in fantastic traditional Aboriginal games using hands-on materials. We all went home exhausted knowing more about the Aboriginal culture. It was such a great day!

Emma Hall and Joey Mortimer graded for their Taekwondo 1st Dan Black Belts last Saturday. The two local San Taekwondo students have been training for over three years, and have both attended over 400 classes before reaching this milestone. Emma, 10, who won the National Championships in her division last year, is the youngest person from San Taekwondo to reach her Black Belt. Instructor Cameron Taylor said earning a Black Belt in Taekwondo is a great achievement, and is considered a milestone – as well as often being called just the start of the true journey of a martial artist. The final promotion test for their Black Belt was run by 7th Dan Grand Master Lee Seung-ha, who travels to Beerwah twice per year to run promotional tests for San Taekwondo’s Black Belt students, train instructors and help maintain a high standard in the club. The students were tested on nine traditional patterns of Taekwondo, performed a routine demonstrating various selfdefence techniques, broke timber boards, and showed their ability and stamina through fighting in several rounds of contact sparring. They also had to undertake a written test which included questions about the origins and philosophy of Taekwondo and some Korean terminology. Both Emma and Joey will now continue to train hard as they get ready for State Selections and the National Championships. Emma and Joey with Master Lee Seung-ha

What is tinnitus?
Tinnitus is the sensation of noise ringing in the ear when an external sound is not present. Those that suffer from it experience noise in the form of ringing, buzzing, roaring, clicking, whistling, screeching, static or hissing that may vary in pitch from a low roar to a high squeal in one or both ears. Tinnitus can be a result of acoustic trauma or physical trauma to the ear and in some cases can affect sufferers so adversely it can disrupt their daily function and quality of life. Because it can be a result of one’s surroundings, tinnitus can occur at any age. Most people have experienced some form of tinnitus or another, whether at a loud concert or after a sporting event. The severity and seriousness of it depends on if the ringing noise ceases or is a constant bother. To find out more, ihear at Beerwah are holding a Tinnitus Information morning on Monday July 16. For more details call ihear on 5494 6985.

Elected Representatives Andrew Wallace
Federal Member for Fisher Listening Post tour
Over the past week I have held nine more Listening Posts at locations all over our electorate, including Montville, Palmwoods, Sippy Downs, Kawana and Bells Creek. Local residents asked me about a wide range of issues including, in particular, the Government’s recent personal income tax cuts for all working Australians, and our investment of $390 million to duplicate the railway line between Beerburrum and Landsborough. Many people were frustrated that the State Labor Government has failed local residents by not committing to fund half of this project’s cost, despite the rail being 100% a State responsibility. You can rest assured that I will be continuing to put pressure on the Palaszczuk Government to do the right thing, match our funding, and provide a fair deal for the Coast. Thank you very much to everyone who came along to give me your views and your feedback. I look forward to holding more Listening Posts throughout the year.
Joyce Newton OAM
In Maleny we have a real local hero in Joyce Newton. I was delighted recently to attend Joyce’s investiture with a well-deserved Medal of the Order of Australia which, with typical humility, she accepted on behalf of all the community members who have worked with her over the years. Joyce has spent a lifetime making Maleny a better place. Along with taking a lead in creating new services for Maleny’s students at our local schools, she was a driving force behind building Maleny’s community swimming pool and keeping it running since 1983, setting up a mothers nursing group, restarting the Maleny Community Kindergarten, building an Indoor Activity Centre at the high school, setting up our local Hospital Auxiliary and creating Maleny Rangers Soccer Club. Along the way Joyce has found time to help run the blood bank at Maleny hospital, keep the Maleny Guides and Playgroup going, and to sit on the Advisory Group of the Maleny Community Precinct. Congratulations to Joyce and thank you on behalf of all of us for your hard work.
Eating Disorder Treatment Trial on the Sunshine Coast
In June I was delighted to announce, alongside the Federal Minister for Health Greg Hunt, that the Sunshine Coast has been chosen as the location of a $3.2 million federally-funded pilot program which will help to transform the treatment of eating disorders across Australia. Around 240 local patients will be offered improved treatment, including up to 50 psychotherapy sessions for people with complex eating disorders. I have advocated strongly for a treatment program on the Sunshine Coast which would comprehensively address the challenging and multi-faceted needs of people with an eating disorder, and I’m grateful to the Minister for choosing the Coast for this important pilot program. With the support of the Federal Government, the Sunshine Coast today is truly leading the way in improving Australia’s mental health. Andrew Powell
State Member for Glass House Maleny-Kenilworth Road scheduled for roadworks
Whilst I’m glad that locals are aware of the looming roadworks on Maleny-Kenilworth Road near the intersection with Bakers Road, Elaman Creek, I’m not pleased that they’re happening again. Following the 2010/11 wet season, residents would recall the significant damage to MalenyKenilworth Road in a number of locations and the subsequent delays in fixing the landslips. Unfortunately, as we all knew, this part of the road wasn’t fixed properly and now locals will face approximately three months of further disruptions. I am well aware of the drama that this section of Maleny-Kenilworth Road has caused in the past. It was locals that pointed out the previous work looked shoddy and had soon slipped again. If the job was simply done right in the first place, none of this would be necessary. I’m appalled at the original workmanship and at this waste of taxpayers’ money. I also share the frustrations of residents who will be stuck at stop/go lights for the next few months. The roadworks will be scheduled between 6am and 6pm, which will cause a traffic nightmare for every kind of commuter who uses the road. These are the busiest times for Maleny-Kenilworth Road. I extend my apologies to locals and tourists alike that get caught up in this. Let’s just hope these contractors get it right. I want this part of the road to be repaired once and for all.
Out and about around the electorate
It’s certainly been a very busy month for me in the electorate! Since my last column, I’ve had Budget week in Parliament, attended a Crime Stoppers charity golf day, officially opened Maleny’s ‘Gardening on the ile mob his Andrew at one of Edge’ weekend, offices travelled the southern half of the electorate holding mobile offices with the LNP candidate for Longman, Trevor Ruthenberg, dropped into many local businesses whose owners/employees couldn’t make it to the Glassies, attended a fundraising dinner for our hardworking Chappies and had a whole heap of fun (and Dagwood dogs!) at the Woodford Show. It has truly been a fantastic month and I’ve enjoyed being able to meet so many of you whilst I’ve been out of the office and Parliament. Indoors might be warmer, but I’ve donned my mittens, thermals and fleece jacket and travelled to just about every corner of the electorate this month! Remember, if you need to see me about a state matter simply call 5318 8100 or email Glass.House@parliament.qld.gov.au. glass.house@parliament.qld.gov.au www.andrewpowell.com.au Search us on Facebook Andrew Powell

Division 5 - Sunshine Coast Budget delivers great outcomes for communities across Division 5
Continued improvements to local parks and playgrounds, safer and wider rural roads and improved streetscapes and car parking are just some of the highlights for Division 5 in Sunshine Coast Council’s 2018/19 budget. Rural roads are always high on my agenda, so I’m very pleased to announce that this year’s budget includes $1.7 million for the ongoing upgrade of 1.2km stretch of McGilchrist Road in Eudlo, $465,000 to widen and upgrade a section of Diamond Valley Road, $65,450 to upgrade the remainder of Citrus Road at Palmwoods and $185,000 to upgrade the car park at the local community kindergarten.
Palmwoods Town Square wins national awards
Council was last week proud to receive two awards from the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects for the Palmwoods Town Square. Council received an Award of Excellence in the Civic Landscape category for the design and placemaking process we undertook to deliver the Town Square. We also received an award for the Community Contribution category, which recognises our new placemaking ‘activation’ approach we undertook with the community. I would like to congratulate the community of Palmwoods for their efforts, particularly the Palmwoods Community and Business Association for their ongoing support during the lead up and during the process. Thanks also to the community arm of the Palmwoods Heritage Bank which contributed $75,000 toward the community boardwalk. This wonderful new space has been embraced by the whole community – the new free WIFI is proving popular and council is now receiving inquiries and requests for events in the Green, which is great to see.
Fun for kids and adults alike these school holidays
Budding young artists aren’t the only ones with the opportunity to have fun at Mary Cairncross during the school holidays. In addition to hosting a range of wonderful school holiday workshops, the incredible Rainforest Discovery Centre is also welcoming a range of inspiring exhibitions by local artists and hosting hands-on workshops in printmaking for adults as well. If you haven’t discovered this amazing new centre yet, I would encourage you to visit this wonderful facility and explore our natural environment.
Improved amenity for Mooloolah Sport and Recreational Ground
This year’s budget also provides for some new play equipment to complement the Mooloolah skate bowl and it’s great to see that the walking path is under construction. As of 1 July 2018, two sharps disposal units will also be installed at Mooloolah Sports Ground. One unit will be installed in the female toilets and one unit in the male toilet. Why not join legal professionals from Suncoast Community Legal at the Beerwah Library on Saturday July 28 and learn how making a Binding Financial Agreement prior to or during your marriage or de-facto relationship can help safeguard your future. Avoid wasting time and energy in a costly legal battle. Give yourself and your partner the best chance of having a fair and predictable outcome should you decide to part ways. Find out what is involved with making a Binding Financial Agreement, what the limitations are, and what the benefits could be. The workshop runs between 10am and 11am and is free to attend, however you need to make sure you book in to secure your spot by phoning 5475 8989.

(Rated M) The film is based on the 2008 bestselling novel by Mary Ann Shaffer and her niece Annie Barrows (whom she asked to help her when the writer became terminally ill). Set in the Channel Island of Guernsey and in London in 1946, the story begins when aspiring writer Juliet Ashton, played by Lily James (Rose in Downton Abbey), receives a letter from Guernsey resident Dawsey Adams who mentions the Society and how it was formed in 1941 as a cover for breaking the strict evening curfew imposed by Nazi soldiers during the occupation. Juliet, who was orphaned by the war, is intrigued and catches the ferry to Guernsey intending to write a book about the Society. However, the idea of a book is rejected outright by the members, especially as its founder, Elizabeth, was arrested by Nazis and sent away. Five years later, no-one has heard from her. Her little daughter Kit is being cared for by Society members who still meet every Friday evening. As the story unfolds, we learn of the brutality and hardship of the occupation where love, loyalties and friendships were severely tested. Directed by Mike Newell (‘Four Weddings and a Funeral’ and ‘Great Expectations’), this beautifully shot film is enhanced by intrigue, mystery and quirky characters and, of course, a delightful love story. In the words of one reviewer it is "nourishment for the heart and soul". When: Saturday July 14 and Sunday July 15 Where: Maleny Community Centre, Maple Street Food and Drinks: Dinner from 6pm-7pm catered by Wild Rocket, tea/ coffee and homemade slices stand, and drinks available from the bar Movie: Screens from 7.15pm Saturday and 2.30pm Sunday. Running time 124 minutes Cost: $13 adults (non-members), $8 students with ID, and children under 16, $5. Brighten your backyard with daylilies
With modern yards getting smaller and potted gardens becoming trendier, people are looking to pack as much colour, impact and interest into a small area as possible. Combine this with our desire for no fuss, easy care plants, and you often end up with limited options and palette. This is where daylilies can be the picture-perfect solution. Daylilies are called that because the flowers open in the morning and close in the evening. They are a clumping perennial plant which grows (and expands) from a crown and enlarged roots. They come in an amazingly enormous range of colours and forms. And when I say amazing… I mean eye-poppingly amazing. They really are the rainbow of the plant world. Daylilies – although not being fool-proof – are pretty easy to grow successfully. They need at least six hours of sunlight a day and they do best in a good organically rich soil. The best way to buy them is through mail-order from a reputable grower. Luckily, we have one of these locally here in Maleny – Mountain View Daylily Nursery. Mail-order daylilies will arrive bare rooted. Take them from the packaging and soak the roots in a weak seaweed solution overnight before planting. This will rehydrate the roots and give them a good start. If they’re going into a garden bed, plant them at least 60cms apart as they will expand as a clump to fill the space within a few short years. If it’s a pot, make sure it’s a deep pot that is at least 50cm across. It’s a good idea to label the plant with a name tag so you know what variety the plant actually is. You can be sure that people will see it flowering and ask you what it’s called, so this is the best way to keep track of their names. Water your new daylilies regularly for the first month or two – maybe twice or so a week – but not so often that the soil around them stays wet. This could cause the thickened root to rot before it has the chance to grow new feeder roots. You’ll know they’ve established when they’ll start to grow new leaves from the centre. The outer leaves will brown and die off, but this is just how they normally grow. After that, just treat them well… regular watering and the occasional feed with a general fertiliser… and they’ll reward you with flowers from October through to about Easter. If you’d like to look at the range of colours available, you can do that by going onto the Mountain View Daylily Nursery website (www.daylily.com.au) and flicking through their photo gallery. If you’d like to get quirky, you could start a ‘Maleny’ garden featuring varieties which Scott Alexander (owner of Mountain View Daylily Nursery) has developed and bred and named after the town. There’s Maleny Blue Eyes, Maleny Flirt, Maleny Princess, Maleny Ballerina, Maleny Bonanza, Maleny Sizzler, Maleny Showgirl and Maleny Chantilly Lace – just to name a few.

They meet at the church on a Wednesday morning from 9am to 11am each week during school term on Twin Peaks Drive, Beerwah. Elimbah Uniting Church have craft, cuppa and chat mornings on the second and fourth Fridays of the month from 9am-noon. During
From the churches Last Wednesday, July 4, we commemorated St Thomas’ Day at the historic Anglican Church in Bray Road, Mooloolah. It was a lovely occasion and it was wonderful to see the church overflowing. We meet every Wednesday at 9am for Holy Communion and visitors are always warmly welcomed. St Thomas was one of Jesus’ disciples and is often referred to as Doubting Thomas. John’s Gospel (chapter 20:24-29) records when Thomas wanted to see the marks in Jesus’ body where the nails had been at the crucifixion before he would believe Jesus’ resurrection. But rather than judging Thomas for his need for proof, Jesus shows him the evidence he needed. For many people in our society, the search for evidence of God is real and profound. While in previous centuries, there has been a clear separation of Science and Religion, in recent decades there has been a resurgence of researching seeking to make links between current scientific research and religion. Many
the school holidays they do extra sessions on a Friday mornings where they teach hand sewing and knitting. The next session is on July 13, attendance is free. Their church services are Sunday mornings at 8am. All welcome. The church is located at 3 Coronation Drive, Elimbah. Caboolture Orchid Society is holding their Annual Winter Show at the Morayfield Community Complex from Friday July 20 to Sunday July 22. The show will include Orchid Society and orchid nurseries displays, as well as floral art display and sales, and orchid potting demonstrations at 10am, 11am, 1pm and 2pm each day. There will also be specialist orchid advice table, orchid plant sales as well as Bromeliads, Tillandsia, African Violet, cacti and succulents on sales. Entry is free, and the show will be open on Friday and Saturday from 9am-4pm and Sunday 9am-2pm. The venue is located at 298 Morayfield Road, Morayfield (behind Bunnings). Do you experience facial pain? You are not alone. The Sunshine Coast Trigeminal Neuralgia Support group may be able to help you. Our next meeting is on Saturday July 21. Please join us for coffee and refreshments from 1pm at the Kawana Library meeting room, Nanyima Street, Buddina (entrance at rear). Keep up to date with information to help you manage your wellbeing and meet new friends. Enquiries to Nora on 0418 495 776.
Julie Worrall Glasshouse Country Anglican Church scientists, like Dr John Polkinghorne, enter the scientific realm to prove God does not exist only to change their mind and become lifelong Christians. Others, like Richard Dawkins start looking for evidence of God and end up declaring that belief in God is illogical. Wherever you are in your search for God, you will find people in our churches on the same journey. Most importantly, you will find people willing to engage in the big issues and questions of life and people who are open to helping you explore where we see God to be at work in the world around us, and in our own lives. May you be like Thomas and have the courage to ask questions and search for proof – only then can God, and the Church, respond to your questions and support you in your journey to find the one true God in your life.

Sport Silver for Elijah Last weekend Elijah Cannon contested the 40kg Division at Boxing Queensland’s Novice Titles in Brisbane. Boxing two bouts over two days, Elijah won his semi-final on the Saturday before picking up a silver medal in a competitive final bout on Sunday. Hinterland Boxing Club coaches Shaun Halley and Stephen Pitt were very proud of Elijah’s effort during
the competition and his progression in the gym over the last couple of months. Well done, Elijah.
Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Graeme Glover Another busy week of bowls for our members at Maleny Bowls Club. Congratulations to Joe W and Jim W for their win in the pairs championships. Well played in winning in an extra end. Congratulations to all members who played and thanks for your participation. A reminder to all nominations for the triples to please check your must-play-by dates and communicate early and play as soon as possible to allow for all games to meet these requirements. Check availability of green so as not to clash with other bookings. Thank you to Miles A for organising championship games and to all players for their cooperation in getting games played as per the schedule. Congratulations to Sandra Kapetanic who played superb bowls to win the Scroungers final. Well done Ian C and Dennis K for your making the final but it was to be Sandra's day. Thanks to the teams who travelled to Mapleton to
enjoy a great afternoon of bowls with our hinterland friends. Always a great bowls outing every month. Great to support each other in the hinterland, keeping small clubs vibrant. Wednesday night bowls was well supported despite a number of our regular stalwarts being absent visiting family during the school holidays. See you all next week. Some early form says the north Maleny crew could be up for the trophy. The Tutors could have a big form turn around after a trip to Melbourne and a short bowls break. Mighty Ten are ready to show some winning form. It was an interesting conclusion when the lights went out. It was like a number of bowls on the green very short. Some people reported to have played better bowls under the light of their phones. Our leader says “too dark to bowl, to the bar” and all was over. We all drank to that, another great night. What a way to kick off the new competition. Remember, all welcome. Come on down and try your hand at the best fun in town.
Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker We are having our 25th birthday party on Saturday July 21. Anyone who has been a member of the club since its inception is invited to join us in the celebrations. Morning and afternoon tea and lunch will be provided. If you are able to attend, please phone Vince Carbery on 5494 2193, Priscilla Vickers on 5494 3555 or email the club at therange@croquetqld.org. We would also appreciate any stories or photos that you may have. Stuart Craig and Bev Sockhill attended the Saturday session with Sarah Widin coaching. It’s good to have such dedicated people coming up through the ranks in the club. There was no play on Sunday, but Tuesday and beautiful weather saw the Range Care group on the lawns having a good time playing croquet. The second half of the pennants competition began for the Lochwood Trophy on Wednesday. The Range team consisted of Donna Manning, Nick Cram and Ken Barker. Caloundra, their opposition, fielded Fred
36
van Vugt and Leigh Sampson. Donna played well to peg out against Fred beating him 26-13. She made a good break of 9 in that score. Nick was well ahead after one and a half hours of play when Leigh made a break of 6 to get back into the game. From there it developed into a real arm wrestle with Nick finally winning 16-14. The doubles game in the afternoon was even more tense. At the end of time scores were locked at 17 all. A series of simple errors were made by both sides before Donna and Ken won 18-17 in a golden hoop finale against Fred and Leigh. Well done both teams and thanks to Caloundra for an interesting round. The Range won the fixture 3-0, a very good result. Club play days are Thursday and Sunday at 1 for 1.30pm. Saturday mornings at 8am there are lessons for beginners on the courts in the showgrounds. For details contact president Vince Carbery on 5494 2193 or secretary Priscilla Vickers on 5494 3555.
World champion trains local fighters San Training Centre recently hosted a high performance training session run by four-time world champion Master Choi Yeon-ho who is currently studying in Australia for 12 months. Master Choi was the Taekwondo Male Finweight (54kg category) World Champion in 2001, 2003, 2007 and 2009. The session was organised by Australian Taekwondo Queensland and included athletes from as far south as the NSW border, and north as far as Bundaberg. Master Choi took the attending fighters through a tough two-hour training session which involved a large volume of kicking drills and match play fights. The local owners and head instructors of San Taekwondo, Cameron and Kasia, both participated in the session as they prepare to travel to Canberra for the National Team selections in early July, and then on to Tahiti at the end of the month for the Oceania President's Cup. Master Choi will continue to run high-performance sessions throughout Queensland for the remainder of the year.

Peachester Sports Carnival Contributed by Carrie Shaw The Peachester State School oval was a sea of red and blue recently as students attended this year’s sports carnival. The day saw students, parents and teachers all cheering on the participants as they competed for points towards their sports houses, Stanley and Coochin. The older students also competed for Age Champion medals and the opportunity to attend the District Carnival next term. This year we were also lucky enough to have some brand new sporting equipment to use which was donated by our fantastic P&C. It was a tough competition, and Coochin team were the lucky overall winners on the day, but it was lovely to see all students walking away with huge smiles. We would like to congratulate all our students who participated and the following age champions: 9 years – Keeley and Brooklyn, 10 years – Erin and Daniel, 11 years – Emma and Sam A, and 12 years – Montana and Malachi. A huge congratulations also goes to Sam A and Erin who were awarded Overall Champions, earning the most amount of points for their sports team on the day. 2018 Age Champions
Innovative bunkering extended to new holes Maleny Golf Club features some innovative revetted bunkering to guard its three new greens, presenting golfers with a unique challenge and playing experience. Club President Dr Max Whitten said the club had trailed the application of artificial turf matting to construct the high revetted walls in two bunkers on the signature par 3 third hole to minimise ongoing maintenance. “This trial was very successful, giving us the confidence to extend and incorporate the technique during construction of the bunkers on our three new holes which opened in June,” Dr Whitten said. “The pot bunkers on the third hole have intimidatingly high near-vertical walls which present most golfers with quite a challenge if they are unfortunate enough to hit their ball into one of these hazards.” The bunking is part of the original design by course architect Graham Papworth. Work is about to get underway on the final six holes to extend the course from 12 to 18 holes over the next two years. The club recently installed a large semi-permanent marquee to extend the club house and completed construction of a first-class maintenance facility to house its fleet of equipment and accommodate future expansion.

A man who lived next door to a pub had a favourite tabby cat. Sadly the cat was run over by a truck and killed. A year later, at around midnight, the pub landlord was cleaning up the empty bar when suddenly the ghost of the cat appeared, holding it’s severed tail in its paw. “Can you help me?” asked the cat’s ghost. “I used to live next door to you until I was run over by a truck.” “Yes, I remember you,” said the landlord. “You were
