ast week I received a flyer from the Beerwah Bulldogs about their Breast Cancer awareness day planned for this Saturday down at the Beerwah

Sportsground. Over the years we have done plenty of stories about the ‘pink’ efforts that clubs, groups and individuals go to to raise both funds and awareness. We have had lots of great photos of people in pink tutus, or lovely pink feather boas, and hot pink wigs. The best example of these is at the Pink Motor Bike Ride – where these items and quite a few stylish pink bras are worn over the top of the riders ‘tough’ leather gear – and lots were men.

Hi Everyone

And I think it is great that the girls of the Beerwah Bulldogs who are tough enough to play Rugby League are also girly enough to wear pink and get out there and spread the message. They are planning to have a big family day kicking off at 9.00am – and going through until 9.00pm, with market stalls, face painting, a jumping castle and raffles. So for a gold coin donation why not head down to the Beerwah Sportsground this Saturday and show the girls you like what they’re doing to support the Breast Cancer Network Australia.

If you’ve been meaning to sort through your clothes wardrobes, cupboards and drawers to work out what items you don’t wear anymore, now is the time to do it! Glasshouse Mountains Neighbourhood Centre is hosting a Swap Fest on Saturday, June 21, from 2.00pm to 4.00pm. Just bring along clothes, shoes and accessories you no longer wear and swap them for anything that takes your fancy. Helen Wilkinson from the Glasshouse Mountains Neighbourhood Centre said, “we thought it’s a great, really affordable, sustainable way to bring people together, have some fun and revamp your wardrobe. You really can update your wardrobe with interesting stuff. Pre-loved things come with character too.” This is not the first time the Glasshouse Mountains Neighbourhood Centre has held a clothes swap. “We held successful swap fests a couple of years ago and it’s time to bring them back. It’s a fun way to find clothes you might not ordinarily buy for yourself. It’s a nice social setting too, a bit different from walking into a shop.”

Could animals change Beerwah’s future? By Lea Parkes

However, after a trip to South Australia late last year, Sandy returned home inspired with an idea that she believed could turn Beerwah township into a destination that would attract visitors and tourists to the area. Sandy’s friend took her to Monarto Zoo, and then on a side visit to a nursery that has full size elephant statues for sale. After a bit of research, Sandy discovered that the company who made the statues was based at Samford and they were well-priced and had an amazing range. Sandy, who describes herself as an obsessive animal lover, could immediately imagine what an amazing addition a number of trails of full size fibreglass animals winding through Beerwah could make to the town. For the past few months she has been busy lobbying all levels of government, along with the local Chamber of Commerce and individual local businesses and residents to garner support for her concept. Her idea is to initially create a number of trails, including an Animals of the World Trail which would begin at the Beerwah CWA building up to Mill Park, then back through Beerwah and end up at a playground in Turner Park. The second trail she envisages on the northern side of the railway line and on the side between the rail line and Steve Irwin Way she could see an Australian Walkabout with the Australian animals both alive and extinct which would end up with a sheering shed with a sheerer and sheep. Along with the animal trails, Sandy also has thought about plenty of other elements to the project including a number of animal murals throughout the town.

Tired of those nagging aches and pains?

Sandy with a gorilla statue "My idea is that there will be a map with what visitors can see in the town and on the other side could promote the local businesses,” Sandy said. “I would also like to develop a booklet with information about the animals which should be a good educational resource for children and families visiting the trails. “So far I have had plenty of interest from many of the government representatives including the Premier, and Sunshine Coast Destinations have been working with me on developing a business plan for the project. “I know this isn’t a project I can make happen on my own, and it certainly isn’t going to happen overnight, but I hope to be able to find some other locals who are keen to work with me to make it a reality," she said. Once the project moves along, Sandy will need people with art, illustration and design skills that will be able to volunteer their time for the project. Sandy hopes to organise a community meeting with some statues on display so people can really get to see exactly the impact they would make. If you would like to contact Sandy to let her know your interest in going along to a meeting or helping in other ways call her on 5439 9882 or you can email her on sandy.hanson@bigpond. com – please put ‘Beerwah Destination Project’ in the subject line.

Many have been down this road before, and many others are on this path now. One of the most dangerous sayings is ‘It might just go away’, as this is the approach for most people. And while the symptoms do often subside on their own, the problem remains and the symptoms often return.

Halls Creek community forum At the insistence of the State Government, the recent approval of the Sunshine Coast Council’s strategic plan was conditional upon council including an area of land known as Halls Creek for future development investigation. Originally, the parcel of land – which sits below the existing approved Caloundra South development area and adjacent to the Pumicestone Passage – was not included in the strategic plan. Council made this determination due to there already being a substantial supply of development land at Caloundra South and the community’s insistence that a green belt be maintained between the Sunshine Coast and Caboolture. Council’s preferred option is to plan for the future development of an area called Beerwah East, between Steve Irwin Way and the Bruce Highway, from Beerwah to Glenview. The State Government and Council agreed to review the inclusion of Halls Creek and Beerwah East after an investigation has been undertaken into their suitability – which includes what the community want. Taking the initiative, the Caloundra and the Glass House Country Chambers of Commerce, the Organisation of Sunshine Coast Association of Ratepayers (OSCAR) and the Sunshine Coast Environment Council (SCEC) are holding a community forum on the Halls Creek issue from 7.00pm to 9.00pm Thursday, July 3, at the CCSA Hall, 2 Nutley Street, Caloundra.

It is suggested you turn up early if you need be sitting down for this length of time. The forum will provide an opportunity for the community to find out more about the issue and the Halls Creek and Beerwah Caloundra South Corridor areas, and for local politicians to hear what locals think of their plans. “As key stakeholders in the region we have all been following these issues for a long time and have a good understanding of the key concerns,” said SCEC Executive Officer, Wiebe ter Bals. “But we understand not everyone in the community will be as familiar with the issues and we want to provide an opportunity for people to find out why this issue is so important and to ask questions of experts and decision makers. “This issue concerns everyone in our community. It has major implications for the character of our community in 30 or 40 years time. “The decision we take now will determine whether we will be able to preserve the character and the natural beauty that makes this such a unique place to live. “This is why business, community and environmental

groups have come together to host this forum. This is not just an economic issue, and not just an environmental issue, these decisions will affect everyone across all sectors of our community,” he said. The groups have prepared a video that provides an overview of some of the key issues to help the community get an understanding of what is at stake. The video can be accessed via the SCEC website (www.scec.org.au) and on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=JQIlGuFrDT0).

Funding approved for local projects At the Sunshine Coast Council meeting on May 22, a range of community and Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) grants were awarded to some great local groups and projects. From the long list of applications, the following local groups were successful in receiving a Community Grant: • Mooloolah Valley Community Association $7,000 to install air conditioning • Beerburrum Innovation Group - $7,500 for a Matthew Flinders Bicentennial Arts Faire • Maleny Community Centre - $4,354 to upgrade their ‘Green Room’ • Maleny Golf Club - $6,362 to lay synthetic turf onto a practice green • Glass House Mountains Sports Club - $4,985 to replace their gas cooker in the kitchen • Radio Controlled Off Road Racing - $6,806 to install drainage and new fencing The local applicants who have been successful in receiving a RADF grant are: • Ivon Northage – New Matthew Flinders Project. This project is to provide the local community and visitors to the Glass House Mountains with more in-depth professionally written and verified information about explorer Matthew Flinders and recognise the significant connection Flinders has to the area.

• Russell Anderson – Bubble Machine III. An art installation which will spark wonder in audiences through its mix of technology, whimsy and design mastery, to build an appreciation for the arts especially via its accessibility and broad appeal. • Arts Connect Inc – Sculpture on the Edge. An exhibition to attract a national audience. The inclusion of 'green art' will be an exciting opportunity for visitors to talk to artists and watch the work evolve. • Hayden Hack Infusion - The Colour of Funk. This project will offer a vital promotional opportunity for Hayden Hack Infusion's music as well as a career-enriching opportunity for the eight Sunshine Coast band members, and will also promote the capacity of associated industry professionals on the Coast. The RADF Grants will bring the coast alive, according to the Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay. “The Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) is a partnership between the Queensland Government and regional councils, and the latest round of Sunshine Coast Council grants includes more than $90,000 in funding for 16 projects,” Cr McKay said. “The recipients are a diverse selection of really inspiring and dedicated artists and organisations who contribute greatly to the culture of our region.” Applications for Sunshine Coast Council’s next round of RADF funding will open on July 16.

Student idea to promote sustainable food foraging A University of the Sunshine Coast student’s plan for a new mobile phone application that encourages sustainable food sourcing and consumption across the region was outlined at the World Environment Day Festival on Sunday, June 8. Rowan Schindler, 24, of Mooloolah, is developing the iForage app with the input of other USC students and staff including Lecturer in Serious Games Development Ben Rolfe and Senior Lecturer in Environmental Engineering Helen Fairweather. Rowan, who is in the final semester of his Arts degree, majoring in Journalism and History, first raised the concept at this month’s Startup Weekend at the Innovation Centre. It was part of his participation in a App developer Rowan Schindler USC Business Entrepreneurship course. After gaining the support, he is now pursuing a business plan for the app which will identify the locations of free food across the Coast and offer advice on sustainable food consumption, such as edible plant species. “There are plenty of food resources that have been neglected or forgotten by people,” Rowan said, listing wild mango and banana trees, berries, leftover seasonal produce at roadside giveaways, even certain flowers such as dandelions. “I did a three-week sustainability project in the Canadian Arctic earlier this year with USC’s Dr Tristan Pearce. I lived in an Inuit community and saw their resourcefulness. “I came back to the Coast and thought, there is food everywhere and we’re letting it go to waste. “People are afraid because it’s not in a store. We need to rediscover a sustainable way of foraging for food like our ancestors did,” he said.

Glenview Road remedy

Safer travels for drivers and pedestrians – that’s the outcome from Sunshine Coast Council’s $1.1 million upgrade to Glenview Road. Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski said the project involved renewal of failing road pavement along a section of Glenview Road, west of the school between Rosemary Avenue and Tolson Road. “These works have greatly improved the quality of the road surface on this stretch of Glenview Road, making it much safer and smoother for commuters,” he said. “Along with the road re-surfacing and sealing works, this upgrade also included installation of guard rail, kerb and channel works, earthworks, construction of retaining walls for pathways and new stormwater drainage.” “Council worked closely with local residents in the lead up to this project and while works were in progress to ensure the community’s immediate and long term needs were met.” Division 5 Councillor Jenny Mckay said further upgrades to Glenview Road would continue in future years. “This upgrade to Glenview Road is planned to be undertaken in a number of stages according to available budget,” she said. “The first stage of works involved a number of design challenges that were addressed, including improvements to road corners, road width and difficult driveways and council is committed to extending these improvements further west along Glenview Road in the future.”

Horse whispering at Tunnel Ridge Ranch By Anne Snell Glasshouse Country News recently had the pleasure of visiting the Tunnel Ridge Ranch, a Youth Camp on the banks of the Ewen Maddock Dam. Tucked in the bush at the top of Tunnel Ridge Road, it is a superb property that offers a tranquil setting for groups that want to have a camping experience with all the frills. Ranch Directors Paul and Cheryl Fishburn describe their facility as a unique camp site, where children can experience and enjoy god’s creation in a safe and friendly environment. Their aim is to provide their campers with attractive facilities, fabulous food and an energetic program, which is run by accredited staff, and for everyone to experience the love of god, through every aspect of camp life. The site offers horse riding, archery, canoeing and rock climbing as well as a beautiful swimming dam and multipurpose dining hall. Dormitory accommodation is available as well as eco tents with solid floors. They specialise in school camps for children of all ages. I spoke to Kim Thomson from Tunnel Ridge Ranch, who was very excited about a special visitor coming to the ranch in July. His name is Dr Lew Sterrett and he will be doing three shows for the public. Called Sermon on the Mount, he describes his show as “life lessons from a horse whisperer.” Dr Lew grew up in Pennsylvania and has been

Horse whisperer Dr Lew Sterrett involved with horses from an early age. He is an international speaker, horse trainer and certified counsellor with a master’s degree in divinity and a doctorate in leadership training. He asks his audience to watch him work with untrained horses, listen as he explains how a horse understands him and to learn to evaluate and understand horse behaviour. He uses his horse training to illustrate lessons for life and leadership. The ranch will be hosting three shows on the weekend of July 12 and 13 and are also offering face painting, pony rides, food, snacks and drinks, so you can make a day of it and enjoy the ambience with the family. Tickets are $10.00 per person, children $5.00 and under 5’s are free. Visit www.tunnelridge.com.au or call Kim on 5494 8657 for more details.

June Good Neighbour Award At the meeting of Beerwah NHWQ, held on June 2, the June Good Neighbour Award certificate was presented by the Area Co-ordinator, Ron Stocks, to Eunice and Ted Prickett. They were nominated by Esma Rigby, who was unable to be present. She wrote of their many kindnesses to elderly folk in the community, as well as their interests in environmental matters, such as the Friends of Cahill's Scrub. The Smocking group meet the second Saturday of each month at Laura May Smocking and Craft, 21 Coral Street, Maleny at 10.00am for three hours. If you wish to come and join us, morning tea is provided and the members have ‘show and tell’ to encourage you to get started. The cost is $5.00 for the morning of social chatter and admiring the ladies work. If you wish to ask any questions about our group please ring Robyn on 0408 066 803. Contributed by Patricia Bradford (Publicity Officer) President Coral welcomed members and visitors to Jeff and Rob’s delightful garden for our May meeting. A few members have been out and about this past month; Coral spoke about her visit to Banksia Garden Club for their Friendship day. Their interesting guest speaker delivered a talk about butterflies. During Easter, Pam and John Innes visited the Orchid House on Bribie Island, and an open garden at Montville. Rob and Jeff spoke about their visit to Caloundra Garden Club Friendship Day where they had an interesting morning and their competition bench. Margaret and Coral visited The Valley of the Lakes Garden Club Esk, Friendship Day. An expert on growing roses was the guest speaker. One of our visitors, Shirley, brought along some plant samples with problems. Plenty of helpful advice from members. There was no competition bench in April. Results for March, three way tie 1st Margaret Ferris, Joan Kropp and Cath Howitt all 17 points. 2nd Pam Innes 15 points. Congratulations.

Call out for donations of baby formula and sports balls! Local Mooloolah kids, Isaac and Zoe, along with their mum Jessica are continuing their initiative to support a disadvantaged school / orphanage in Uganda. During June they are looking for donations of baby formula and sports balls (volley balls / soccer balls / net balls) with the hope of filling a suitcase with these items and sending them back with Isaac and Zoe’s grandmother (who currently lives in Uganda) who will be visiting in July. In February of this year, the family launched the cause ‘Safe Water Initiative for Ugandan School’ seeking to raise $10,000 for a deep water bore to help the school ‘Happy Times Childcare Initiative’ have access to safe water.

Family fun event Relax & Heal - Among the Glasshouse Mountains

We all enjoyed lunch then spent some time strolling around and admiring the garden. A very enjoyable day. We will be celebrating Friendship Day in July, so please bring along items suitable for a gardening gift basket to our next meeting. Visitors are welcome to join us on Thursday, June 19, 9.30am at the Peachester Hall. For more information phone 5496 9169.

The annual Landsborough Fishing Club Competition is on again. Running successfully for the last 10 years, the competition commences on Friday, June 20 at 4.00pm and runs until 10.00am Sunday, June 22. With three categories for heaviest fish up for grabs (Bream, Whiting and Flathead) the event will be held at Hussey Creek, Beerburrum. With great support from the following local business’s: Go Turf, Sunshine Coast Hose and Fittings, B and A Tyre and Mechanical, Landsborough Hotel, Landsborough Childcare, BP Landsborough, Robert Fullerton, JTS, Savage Landscape Supplies, Tanks AG Hort, Maximise Health and Fitness, Goop, AKJ Kemp and Sons, KB Cleaning, Cash for Scrap, D and S Crane Hire, Boxells Painting, Liaisons Hair design, Beerwah Print & Stationery and Trophies One, this year’s competition features great cash prizes. Food and refreshments are available on site and for those wanting to make a weekend of it, there is plenty of room to bring your swags and camp. Nominations must be received by 12.00noon Friday, June 13 and forms are available from BP Landsborough, and Liaisons Hair Design. Nominations can be posted to Landsborough Fishing Club. PO Box 251 Glass House Mountains. Q. 4518. For more information please contact Shelly on 0409 064 925.

To date they have raised almost $5,000. The baby formula is urgent, as the school cares for abandoned and malnourished babies. Formula is very expensive in Uganda and the school has not been able to afford it. As the school kids love playing soccer, volley ball and netball, the balls will be greatly appreciated. These are also good toys, that are better when shared. If you are able to donate some baby formula or a sports ball then please call Jessica: 0423 606 926 to arrange pickup. Shhhush ‘It’s a Secret’

Contributed by Jenny Morris What a wonderful morning 20 of our Glasshouse Country View Club ladies had visiting Secrets on the Lake situated overlooking Baroon Pocket Dam near Montville on June 4. We were greeted by our host, George who handed each of our ladies a beautiful rose. Our devonshire tea was then served in the Secrets café by their friendly staff and was just delicious. George took us on a tour of one of their treehouse accommodation units and gardens which has magnificent views. A great place to spend a romantic holiday or spoil yourself in beautiful surroundings. Weddings and special celebrations can be arranged in their gardens. Please check out this amazing accommodation on www.secretsonthelake.com. au. It is a unique place to visit. Our birthday luncheon is just around the corner on June 18 at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club. Please get out your ‘Baubles, Bangles and Beads’ for this occasion. Business Buzz with Sonia Clark Investment Loans – the time is ripe

With interest rates being at record lows, conditions are now the best they have been for property investors. Many property markets around Australia are very healthy, with rental returns at sustainable and continuing growth price and rental growth in houses and apartments. Investors should be looking to use the equity they have built up in their own homes for investment in property – which combines security with the possibility of strong capital growth. The next step in the process is to identify the best possible home loan to suit your needs. There is a wide range of loans suited to investors available in the market, with combinations of fixed and variable rates, different loan periods and other features. So call your local Glass House country mortgage broker, Elena D’Addario on 0400 453 938 to investigate property as an investment option, and you can also win some great prizes from Elena and Aussie.

End of an era

After close to 15 years, the Landsborough Child Care Centre has been sold as of Tuesday, June 20. Owner Ruth Lockhart would like to thank past and present families for their business and support over that time. Ruth said it is with mixed emotions that the decision was made to move on and she will certainly miss the close knit Landsborough community. The Centre has been sold to a private buyer from Narangba and Ruth would like to reassure all the centre’s families that the running of the Centre will remain unchanged with the same friendly caring team of staff.

with sometimes deep seated conditions addressed. As bowen is an intuitive therapy, whatever the body needs the therapy will seek to provide. Lynelle doesn’t offer relaxation massage, rather she practices deep tissue and trigger point massage, as she finds that along with remedial and bowen that these therapies deliver the best results. Another option that she gives is Emmett therapy which works for example on releasing the tension held in the psoas muscle. Open Monday to Friday 9.00am until 6.00pm, and every second Saturday until 1.00pm at her Woodgrove Estate home, as well as a mobile service. Lynelle Clement is not a therapist who is comfortable blowing her own horn; she prefers the effectiveness of her therapy and her client’s satisfaction to speak for itself. With client testimonials that refer to her ability ‘to always know where the pain is’ and appreciation of her ‘healing hands, expertise and caring nature,’ Lynelle’s clients indicate that they have seen beneficial results. Her main ethos in treating her clients is to release muscle tension and provide muscle alignment. One point that Lynelle would like to highlight is the importance of therapeutic maintenance. At the first signs of discomfort or pain, this is the time to see your therapist. Specialising in remedial massage and a keen advocate of bowen therapy, there are potentially great detox benefits for the body -

Contributed by Gail Denver The Maleny Show is always special - and this year Maleny celebrated 77 years of Agricultural Shows with the theme ‘Year of the Small Farmer’. Maleny High School excelled in the Beef Cattle Section this year, winning back the coveted Shannon Shield - a hotly contested award for the top junior judging team that Noosa High wrestled away some years ago. Maleny High School is a major part of the Beef Cattle Section, and this year they also won the ‘School Cup Challenge’ an award made at the end of the Junior Judging and Handling Competition on the Friday, for a range of handling and presentation criteria. The students involved are a credit to their own hard work and to the school's AG department, with their animal husbandry skills also rewarded in the General Classes on Saturday. They won the Reserve Senior Bull with ‘Maleny High Jacob’ their Droughtmaster bull in the tropicals ring, Reserve Senior Bull with ‘Hank’, their South Devon bull, in the European ring, and took the first class in the Led Steers with ‘Squiggles’ - a great result. School News Students dig garden expo

Contributed by Kylie Merola Landsborough State School recently held their annual Garden Expo. Each class was allocated a budget and a school garden bed to transform. Stepping outside their classrooms, students excitedly donned their hats, gardening gloves and picked up their gardening tools in preparation for the makeover. They spent an afternoon working as a team, digging, weeding, planting, mulching and painting to revamp their allocated area. The gardening day really captured kids' interests. Students enjoyed being outdoors, digging in soil, getting dirty and creating things. Whilst having fun, they were developing many new skills from the hands-on experience. At the end of the day, the results were amazing and students had a great sense of pride in their accomplishments. Over coming months they look forward to maintaining the gardens and watching the plants grow. Thank you to everyone who donated plants, pots, soil, mulch and other items. Also thank you to all the parents who came along to lend a hand.

As part of the National Family Reading Month, Glasshouse Country Christian College students were recently inspired by an author visit with well-known author / illustrator Narelle Oliver. Narelle spoke to Prep – Year 2 classes who were captivated by her love of nature and her passion for writing. Staff and students were in awe of her exquisite linoprint and collage illustrations and were keen to read many of her award winning books. Narelle’s visit coincided with Library and Information Week celebrations and was a fantastic opportunity to promote reading. It was also an ideal time for students to get a behind the scenes view of how a book is created and produced. The highlight of the day for many students was touching the real fox fur that Narelle used for her book ‘Fox and Fine Feathers.’ Eva Smith and Hannah Gassner from Prep pose with Mrs Oliver holding their own drawings of ‘The Very Blue Thingamajig’

At the end of May, a group of 10 Glenview students competed in the Sunshine Coast Interschool Individual Chess Tournament at Kawana Community Centre. Our youngest competitor was Nate M in the Under 8 division. Kaleb W, Emily F, Eli C, Keelan M and Loklan D competed in the Under 10 division and Jack W, Luca F, Mia M and Trent R competed in the Under 12 division. Trent and Luca did extremely well placing equal third out of over 90 students in their division. Well done to all our competitors.

Everyone Can Play

‘Everyone Can Play’ was the theme of Under 8’s Day this year, and everyone did play at Mooloolah State School on Thursday, May 29. The community really came together to celebrate, with Mooloolah Playgroup and Mooloolah C&K Kindy joining in the fun. The school oval was transformed into a hive of colour and activities. There were feathers, pipe-cleaners, plasticine, spots, dots and tinsel; and delighted children made masks, monsters, robots, kites, models and collage. There was cutting, sticking, squishing, painting, twirling, and digging; along with music, singing, stories, laughter and lunch. Mooloolah Fire Brigade and Sunshine Coast Library Storytellers featured, along with the school’s own troupes of singers, musicians and Spanish dancers. Activities were all planned and presented by the Mooloolah State School’s early childhood teachers, and the support given by parents, carers and older student helpers was very much appreciated. James, aged seven said, “it was amazing, I loved the collage most of all.” And even at 18 months, Archie from Playgroup was mesmerised! The Under 8’s of Mooloolah would have slept very well on Thursday night! www.gcnews.com.au

Doing business with Council

Every two months council hosts an information session to help the community understand its procurement processes. It’s a great opportunity for local business owners to improve their tendering capabilities. The next session is on Friday, July 18 in Nambour. You can find more information and future dates on council’s business website at www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au. Spots are limited, so make sure you register quickly – call 5475 9929 to do so.

Green for environment

This month is Green June, a celebration of festivals, forums, events, activities and workshops for all ages. Green June is the perfect time for people to focus on sustainable living, sharing ideas and exploring new technology and opportunities. It’s great to see the community and council working together on so many fantastic environmental events that have a common goal. To find out what’s happening during Green June, visit council’s website www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au.

Have your say on animal management

Council is looking to make changes to the local laws in relation to animal management and is seeking your feedback. Residents are invited to have their say on council’s proposed change to the local law to match the Queensland Government’s Food Act 2006 and allow dogs in designated outdoor dining areas, where permitted, by the business owner. You can also provide feedback on the proposal to continue the requirement for owners to register their cats. For further information, or to have your say on one or both of these proposals, visit council’s website or one of our customer contact centres between May 23 and June 22.

Division 5 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council M: 0409 450 726 New signs for Dularcha Circuit

I’m pleased to advise a number of new bollards and finger boards will be installed soon throughout the beautiful Ewen Maddock Dam and Dularcha National Park multi-use trails and surrounding streets to indicate entry and exit points. If you have yet to check out the stunning 23km Dularcha Circuit, I highly recommend you make the visit. Whether it’s on your own two feet, your bike or horse, I’m sure this will soon become a regular outing. Enjoy!

Green June is the perfect time for people to focus on sustainable living, sharing ideas and exploring new technology and opportunities. It’s great to see the community and council working together on so many fantastic environmental events that have a common goal. Green June is all about education. By understanding how our actions impact this planet, the better choices we will make. And that’s a win for the environment, our community and future generations. To find out what’s happening during Green June visit council’s website www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au.

Council contracts

Contracts for council work are awarded for a range of things from street sweeping and mosquito control to catering and construction. Council offers an online alert service to advise of advertised tenders. To receive an instant email alert each time a new tender is advertised, register your details on the ‘Tender Alert Service’ page of council’s website.

Responsible dog ownership

After two men were seriously injured in two separate dog attacks recently, I think it provides a timely reminder that while dogs may be loving members of the family, they can act unpredictably and must be under control at all times. For further information about responsible dog ownership including precautions dog owners can take to mitigate the possibility of aggressive behaviour occurring, visit council’s website. www.gcnews.com.au

Inspiring local senior

By Lea Parkes Last week GCNews brought you the ‘front page’ story of 83-year-old Gordon Howitt of Peachester, who along with two of his daughters, both in their 50s, took on the challenge to trek to the Everest Base Camp. We wanted to share with readers a selection of his many photos. Gordon has always lead a very active life, including plenty of bushwalking (or Tramping as they refer to it in New Zealand) when he was a teenager as well as mountaineering in his 20s. Gordon worked for many years for a Mining Exploration Company working closely with surveyors when new mining projects were being established. There was no doubt in Gordon’s mind that he would be able to cope with the physical requirements of the journey, or the mental challenge of the monotony of the stepping up over and over again. While throughout the journey they carried a 15 kilogram pack with them, all of the other requirements were carried by the Sherpa and Yak. This is one senior who doesn’t seem to let his age stop him getting out there.

Are you receiving your pensioner rebate?

Pensioners are being encouraged to check if they are eligible for a Sunshine Coast Council concession on their rates. Director Corporate Services Ray Turner said Queensland Pension Card and Veteran Affairs Gold Card holders were entitled to a state subsidy on rates on their principal place of residence, and may also be entitled to a council concession. “Provided you have owned property in the region for the last three years, or at least five out of the last 10 years, you are eligible for this reduction on your rates,” Mr Turner said. “You can complete the form as soon as you become eligible, at any time throughout the year. “If you move house within the region you’ll need to reapply.” To apply for a pensioner rate subsidy or concession, complete a form at the council’s customer service centres at Caloundra, Maroochydore or Nambour, or at council libraries. Council staff will witness your signature and take a copy of your pension card.

Reviewing your Will regularly is important to ensure that it accurately reflects your wishes and that it deals with all of your property. Having a current Enduring Power of Attorney allows someone you know and trust to make decisions for you in relation to your health and financial affairs if you lose capacity and are unable to do so yourself. Failure to have either of these important documents can cause your family great distress, be time consuming and expensive.

Estates If a loved one passes away we can assist you to administer their estate. This can involve collecting in assets and ensuring liabilities are paid. Grants of Probate are sometimes required by asset holders and we provide valuable advice to you in this regard. Executors of an estate have many obligations upon them. It is vital you are aware of these obligations if you are appointed as an Executor.

Advanced Health Directive

Funerals from $1647.00

Allows you to decide in advance the level and degree of intensity of medical care you wish to receive and gives guidance to medical professionals in relation to very specific circumstances if you are not able to participate in the decision making at the time.

Reducing the risk of falls in seniors

Doctor of Chiropractic

Each year, one in three adults aged 65 and older will fall. Injuries sustained from falls range from moderate to severe, and can increase the risk of early death. Hip fractures and head traumas are the most severe injuries, and can make it hard for a person to get around or live independently. Additionally, many people who fall, develop a fear of falling again, which causes them to limit activities and leads to a loss of physical fitness and reduced mobility. This fear actually increases the risk of falling again. Fortunately, preventative measures can drastically reduce the risk of falling. Taking steps to improve balance, strength and mobility is a better action plan than allowing fear to rule. • Exercise regularly. The old saying ‘if you don’t use it, you lose it’ is definitely true in this instance. Muscles need to be exercised to stay strong. There will never be a pill or potion invented that can replace the positive effects of exercise. Start small, even walking briskly for 10 minutes is a good start. Research shows the best results come from at least 45 minutes of exercise four times per week, so make that your goal. Tai Chi is a particularly great exercise for seniors. • Address any health concerns. Poor balance, vertigo, poor vision, back pain or weakness can all lead to falls. Many people blame their health challenges on ‘old age’ and don’t believe anything can be done to help. Fortunately, most health conditions can be at least improved if not fully corrected if you put effort into finding the cause, rather than blaming old age. Your GP is able to refer you to the appropriate place, but also consider alternative therapies as well. • Focus on improving health, not just treating symptoms. Many people are happy with their health as long as they are not suffering. Alternatively, a different approach is to always try to be healthier. This may lead to preventing health challenges rather than responding to them when they arise. Exercise regularly, eat a nutritious and clean diet, drink plenty of water, confront stressful issues rather than letting stress rule, and visit a health professional who can guide you along the journey. Memorial Service

Hard work behind the transformation

Where’s your community spirit / civic pride? Do what I do and get out on a Sunday when there’s less traffic, and with rubber gloves and a plastic bag, pick up the rubbish yourself. Name supplied Beerwah On Friday, May 23 my wife and I were invited to attend a Memorial Service at the Redcliff Hospital, it was for people who passed away in their Palliative Care Unit during January to June last year. Let's face it, when one goes into Palliative Care, you know there is only one way out. Over 90 people attended this service, photographs and candles were displayed and burned in remembrance and everyone present had the opportunity to sing and speak at the service. Although none of us would have made it on ‘The Voice’ or similar shows, it was pleasant and serene to have been part of this extremely thoughtful occasion put on by the Metro North Hospital and Health Service. There is no doubt Palliative Care staff are a very special type of people. Every patient they receive is suffering and are at the end of their life, however these people display personal care to each and every patient, the love and affection and genuine thoughtfulness is second nature. The last days, hours or minutes of their lives are made as comfortable as can be possible, the suffering and pain depleted as much as can be and they can pass away with dignity. The Redcliffe Hospital and Palliative Care Unit are to be congratulated and after the service all in attendance were invited to mix and enjoy a cuppa and something to eat. Sausage rolls, pies, sandwiches, cakes and apple juice, it was so

I have recently returned from a trip and in catching up on my local news noticed the article regarding improvements to Beerwah Kindergarten. Being the Kindergarten Treasurer during 2012, 2013 I would like to add some additional detail for readers, and acknowledge the local tradespeople who provided considerable help and support to the committee during that time, who arranged the funding and supervised the works. Bethany Casey Kindergarten President from 2011 to 2013, was predominantly responsible for getting these improvements completed, and was tireless in her approach to the task at hand. I would like to thank the local business and tradespeople for working so well together to transform a tired worn out property into the magnificent Kindergarten Beerwah community has today. They had to get everything completed over a four week period which included Christmas and New Year holidays; they were all a pleasure to work with and completed their tasks on time and to a high quality. Thanks to local businesses: Kev’s Joinery & Shopfitters, Beerwah; particularly Kev who voluntarily co-ordinated a number of tradies and always seemed to be there supervising. Along with Wildhorse Turf at Glass House Mountains who generously donated the turf for the front garden. Aussie Carpets & Vinyl, Beerwah: thanks Peter for helping with selections and doing a great job on time.

Nick and Steph Painting, Beerwah: Nick also helped with advice on colour selection. Thanks also to John from VIP Projects who did the wall relining and carpentry, Trueline Patios, First Call Fencing, Go Skylights, and Advanced Deconstruction asbestos removal. Sorry if I missed someone, but as a past committee member I returned all information to the new committee so have to rely upon my memory. When we were organising the improvements, our goal was to support local businesses who regularly support us with our fundraising efforts. Stuart Eden Treasurer, Beerwah Kindergarten 2012 and 2013

Re: So out of touch (GCNews, June 4)

We have lived through 12 years of profligate Beattie / Bligh government with a ballooning public service and debts to be repaid how? We have endured six years of Rudd / Gillard / Rudd profligacy with people who squandered money we did not have. What parallel universe was this writer inhabiting whilst we were financing pink batts, cash for clunkers, school libraries (with no use) laptops for all....I could go on endlessly. Our genius treasurer brought in a mining tax that raised no revenue and promptly set about spending borrowed money! Yes really. As usual in the State and Federal spheres the Conservatives then have to come in and be the ‘bad guys’ and fix the Labor government's monumental spending fiasco. Annette James, Glass House Mountains

Re: So out of touch

I'm not sure if the writer is aware of recent Australian history. The last time the Queen was involved in Australian politics she sacked the first ‘inspirational leader’. The third ‘inspirational leader’ was sacked by his own party. Neither of these leaders served a full term. They hardly seem an inspiration.

Mysterious objects in Simpson Street

Last Thursday, while walking along Simpson Street in Beerwah, I saw a puzzling object on the back of a utility. It was covered by a tarp, but the wind blew up one side and briefly exposed the mysterious – but beautiful – metallic item. I was quickly able to take a photo on my phone, but could only capture a part of it before the vehicle drove off. I first thought it was a piece of construction machinery left over from the recent roadworks, but it looked like something maybe from an art gallery, so I’m a bit puzzled. And before I could get a better look, it was gone. I’ve showed the photo to friends – one a long time local – and she said that it reminded her of something off the property of a former local resident, ‘Speedy’ Joseph King. Mr King was apparently a pineapple farmer in the area in the 1940s and 1950s.

Is there someone else who has seen it or who might know what it was, as it’s driving me crazy trying to work it out. Laura Anderson Glass House Mountains

Glass House is a great place

On Thursday last week, I was unfortunate enough to be half way across the railway bridge on my horse when an express train went hurtling underneath and decided to give me a toot of his horn. My horses are pretty good with most things, especially Rocky, but this spooked him big time. He went over the traffic fence onto the roadway with me underneath, then headed into town, by the time I dusted myself off and got down there I could see people who had apparently attempted to catch him pointing back up the road, just in time for me to see him flat out across the bridge heading home. My heartfelt thanks to those who tried to catch him, especially the lady from the Tavern, Marie from the Smash repairs and the girls from the Glasshouse Country News office. But the biggest thanks is to Phil from Basset Barks who stopped his truck to stop traffic and then ran after Rocky, caught him and put him back into his paddock. These boys in the trucks who pass me regularly pay us the most courtesy on the road. What a great place Glass House is when people who do not even know you come to your aid in a bad time. Rocky is sore and lame but I don’t think any lasting injury, to me apart from some bruising, my main hurt is my pride. Thanks again to all who came to our aid. Max Chapman Glass House Mountains

Editor’s Note: GCNews received a number of calls from people saying that they’d seen something strange on the back of a utility last week in and around Beerwah. We contacted construction crews still working in town, but none of them could shed any light on the reports. Calls to the Beerwah Recycling Market, Caloundra Art Gallery and others in our ‘spy network’ revealed no further details. However, an enquiry to Council was met with an ambiguous response that they were “looking into it.” GCNews will continue to investigate and try and solve the mystery for the next edition.

Re: So out of touch

Our Country is in dire straits and totally debt ridden, a situation due entirely to the policies of the previous Government. I am a pensioner who lives on my pension and I am very grateful not only to have one, but for all the other ways we are helped. You should try being ill in America. No other country in the world is as generous to their people as Australia. Strong measures need to be taken to pull us out of debt and they are being responsibly done. Wastage has to be curtailed and we all need to have a more responsible attitude towards doing our bit for this great country while we can. If we don't start now, we will slide into a Third world economy. People need to know that in the real world there are no free lunches. A country runs on taxes paid by those who work, and those who don't work while they can, should not expect unlimited handouts. Not a single word has been said by Opposition parties of a better way to get out of debt. I want my country strong and if we all need to tighten belts, let’s cut the whining and do it. Now that our new $5 million project is near complete I can’t help but make comment on our new look Beerwah. Admittedly half that cost has been spent on hidden drainage and power, but for the remaining beautification, some of it is questionable! The hard landscaping is quite good, although Simpson Street is quite narrow, likewise with car parking, leaving too much grass area to be maintained. But the choice of planting or soft landscape is very disappointing to say the least. Native grasses, hedges and unsuitable ground covers have done nothing to justify the beautification. What happened to the huge range of colourful sub-tropical shrubbery both large and small? Come on council, many of us feel you could have chosen much better, to make our Beerwah a real show piece on the map. Colin Batch Beerwah

Coming into winter, it’s time to watch for lawn weeds. The main offenders are bindi-eye, cats ear (or flatweed), tropical chickweed, silver and green leaf desmodiums (velco weed), cudweed, white clover and red caustic weed. Those with couch grass lawns will notice that it tends to thin out, leaving space and opportunity for these weeds to flourish. So to give your lawn a fighting chance, you should look to do a few simple things. Firstly, lighten the soil using a specialist soil aeration tool or with just a common garden fork (jab in, lever a little and repeat over and over). Fertilise with a slow release lawn food product – and water it in. This will encourage root growth. Do some hand weeding or if it’s too far gone, use a lawn weed herbicide. Sow some grass seed to repair any bare patches to prevent the weeds from dominating. Raise your mower height to give the grass more leaf area for it to photosynthesise and produce food for the winter. Winter lawn weeds are a real battle, but with a little effort, they can be overcome.

Hakea actites This stiff woody shrub which grows to 2 to 3 metres, is found in wet heath or wallum woodland, swamp forests to dry eucalypt forests, making it a great species for areas where there is a bit of moisture. Being a member of the Protea family the seed is an ovoid woody capsule, which is very typical of this species, it can also be somewhat bumpy and misshapen. The leaves are sharply pointed which can provide small bird habitat from both predatory birds and feral pests. This beautiful little bush provides a contrast to the greenness of other local species and is a valuable addition to any garden.

Brendan Edwards Glasshouse Country Community Church I recently took a road trip to Sydney to attend a training seminar on how to be a better husband and father, and how to help others to enhance their own relationships as the man in their families. I learned that the role of the husband and father in any family is of far greater importance than I had ever imagined. Every person subconsciously asks different questions about themselves and we as dads play a huge role in how our wives and children have their questions answered. For males, the question is asked, ‘Am I a real man?’ The answer comes to our sons as we invest in them and assure them of our acceptance of them as they come of age as men. Men who have never been assured of this by their fathers or other men close to them growing up are more likely to be trying to prove themselves long into their adult years. Women subconsciously ask of us men, ‘Will you pursue me? Do you delight in me and will you fight for me?’ or ‘Am I worth it to you?’

Whether they are our daughters, our girlfriends or wives, the way we relate to them as men provides the answers to our girl’s questions and can have a significant effect on their well-being and sense of security. Do we pursue our wives in the way they need us too? By pursuing I mean, working hard at understanding them when they are moody or burst into tears for seemingly no reason. It’s easier to give them a pat on the head and turn on the TV hoping they will get over it, but it’s really an opportunity to show that we want to know what is important to them. Blood, Sweat & Cheers Your guide to sport in Glasshouse Country

Master AFL (Over 35’s) at Landsborough Sports Complex

This year the Glasshouse Hinterland Lions AFL Club has been provided four Master games with the intention of submitting a team for the season of 2015. Our 2nd game for this year is at the Tunnel Ridge Road Multisport Complex in Landsborough on June 15 against Pomona. The game starts at 2.00pm with canteen and bar facilities open. Coach Paul McRostie was impressed with how well the team played in their first game and is looking forward to taking the game up to the opposition this week. The purpose of ‘Masters Footy’ is to provide an opportunity for people to play (start, resume or continue) Australian Rules outside of the senior competitions. The motto is Footy for Fun, Fitness and Friendship. There are physical and social benefits of playing footy for as long as possible and Master’s attract all sizes, shapes and playing abilities from complete newbie’s to ex AFL players. Last year the youngest player was 32 and our oldest 69! Any interested AFL players who would like to come have a run and improve their fitness are welcome to come down on the day, or attend training on Tuesday or Thursday nights at the Landsborough complex from 5.30pm. For more information please contact Craig Bales at 0414 225 329 or Craig.Bales@Quantum.com 34 |

Contributed by Jenny Kelly Apparently winter has arrived but nobody seems to have told Huey yet, so we are still enjoying glorious weather with great playing conditions on the course. We had 77 players come out to compete for the June Monthly Medal. As always, the Medal is sponsored by our club professional John Mellish, whose generous Teresa, John, Sue and Margaret sponsorship is very much appreciated. Sue Williamson came in a winner in Division 1 with a great score of 73 Nett. Sue was followed by Karen Gannon on 75 Nett, while Sonia Kenway took out the Gross with an 83 off the stick. Division 2 winner was Teresa Keast on 74 Nett, runner up was Lyn Wallace on 75 Nett and Di Flint took out the gross with 95 off the stick. Winner of the Division 3 Medal was Margaret Goodger with the best score of the day, a 71 Nett, followed by Marg Hunkin with 73 Nett. Winner of the Gross was Carol Fraser with 104 off the stick. Our most accurate putter for the day was Cathy Stone who got around with 26 putts. Number 2 proved hard to hit, so no nearest the pin on that hole. Lorraine Dillon was closest on the 5th, Barb Drury took out the 16th as well as Div 1 on the 18th. Carol Fraser was closest in Div 2 on the 18th. The ball run down went to 79 Nett. The girls start their club championships next week so very good luck to all the competitors. www.gcnews.com.au

Jim’s car is swerving all over the road so a cop pulls him over. “Step out of the car,” says the cop, “I am going to need you to take a breathalyser test.” “I can’t,” Jim responds. “You see I have very bad asthma, and that can set off an attack.” “Alright,” says the cop, “then you’re going to have to take a blood test.” “Can’t do that either,” Jim responds. “I am a haemophiliac, if a wound is opened, I won’t stop bleeding, and I could

GEMINI May 22 – June 21 Mercury is now involved in your money earning sector until June 17. These money matters under a retrograde energy says that you may seriously need to double check financial statements and follow every day your online banking account. Bill paying is to be done very carefully. You may spend a lot of time rethinking. CANCER June 22 – July 22 Your mind this week may have access to information through dreams, meditation, and the need to spend time in solitude or with nature. When writing on a private project you will have much to say and enhance it all as a soulful journey. Postpone new projects, just rethink, review and revise. Liberate your feelings with a friend. LEO July 23 – August 22 Old, unresolved issues, resurface, especially about reclaiming your inner authority, in a karmic obligation. With Mercury and Neptune acting as psychologists, spread yourself on a couch and release repressed anger! Aggression if turned inward, creates stresses in the body. Transform any anger into inspirited transformation now. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 Mercury, being your ruler, retrogrades back through the sign of Cancer and again into Gemini. This will be a week of re-evaluation about friendships and social involvements and perhaps the potential of romance with a friend. Make sure in your communications, be it by phone or email, that you say exactly what you mean clearly.

Week beginning 11/06/14

LIBRA September 23 – October 22 The planet Mercury is in retrograde motion and will eventually send your mind into an introspective backtrack when it moves into Gemini, after June 17. However this week, may bring new ideas to the forefront, for reflection and discussion. It’s a good time to have exploratory talks, moving into debate. Positive news coming. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 Venus, moving into the sign of Taurus, is in your partnership sector. Venus is very content in her own sign, however in opposition to the Scorpio energy, which may be looking for love in a fairy-tale form. Venus may be interested more now in creature comforts of wining and dining and being presented with a large carat diamond! SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 Venus the planet of love, spices up your affairs later this month. This will be the time for making travel arrangements for weekend affairs. Maybe you will be feeling hot energies under the full Moon in your sign on June 13. Check your blood pressure which may be rising because of unexpected delays with mail. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 The Sagittarius full Moon this week, is a reminder to your sign, that burning the candle at both ends can be detrimental to your physical and psychological health. At this full Moon, Saturn opposes Venus, which marks the difference between the social responsibilities and personal pleasures. Wear your best clothes now.

AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 This full Moon in the fire sign Sagittarius, is on Friday, June 13. Perhaps you can wish for good luck by patting black cats or skirting around ladders! There are some friends that may have high expectations of you. You may therefore be privy to rather secret information. Best not to pass around rumours until truth is out. PISCES February 20 – March 20 The retrograding planets of Mercury and Neptune will keep you in a tight cocoon of confused living and perhaps shifting self-identity. It may be hard to see the people in their true situations clearly. Your internal psychic senses may be your best guide. The full Moon will resolve any outstanding tensions now. ARIES March 21 – April 20 Not only is Mercury moving through its reverse turn in Cancer, but it is also being coloured by Neptune’s murky turn around as well. With both these planets retrograde, some disorder may enter domestic doings. Loved ones can speak at cross purposes and miscommunication brings in high emotional issues. Travel delays. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 As Venus, your ruling planet, is in opposition to the task master planet, Saturn, you may find it difficult to make your needs known to a partner. Right now you want warm affection, which is the Taurean issue, but Saturn can be extremely cold and speaks in blunt terms, so that you would be better off being alone now.
