O
On the weekend I was chatting to a couple from Melbourne who were up on holiday and naturally we got talking about the ‘Cup’. I mentioned the large number of local events that we had across Glasshouse Country and Maleny, and I think they were a little surprised at just how much we get into the event. But to be honest, I really think we just love the chance to dress up, there isn’t too many times you can get to wear a hot pink fascinator during the week! Our team were able to get to six of the local events and in total I think we have almost 100 group photos of just how glamorous locals are when they are all frocked up. While we haven’t been able to include all of the photos, we do have a double page spread on pages 32 and 33 and the rest are all on our Facebook page for you to take a look. Regards,

Local News Bruce Highway upgrade takes a step closer The upgrades to the Bruce Highway, the Caloundra Road interchange and the exits on and off the highway at Aussie World (informally known as Exit 190) seem to be nearing commencement. Last week, the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) announced that Fulton Hogan/Seymour Whyte Joint Venture and The Infrastructure Group have been shortlisted to submit proposals for the detailed design and construction of the Bruce Highway upgrade project from Caloundra Road to the Sunshine Motorway. The two contractors have until late March 2016 to prepare and then present their offer, with an award of contract expected in mid-2016. According to TMR, the tenders will have to address key issues identified from extensive community engagement; including reducing the impacts on the Beerwah State Forest; maintaining access to local businesses, particularly the Aussie World precinct; and minimising impacts for the community and road users during construction. Local community groups, businesses and residents have been vocal in expressing their concerns, with State Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle

advocating that TMR must listen to the community. Both the department and the tenderers will be invited to a public forum hosted by Mr McArdle at a date to be announced, to address and listen to key stakeholders including local businesses and environmental groups regarding key issues surrounding the upgrade. “This is our chance to lay all the issues on the table to ensure both tenderers are well aware of the situation at hand,” Mr McArdle said. “Under the proposal many businesses are concerned about direct access to the Aussie World precinct being cut off, while several environmental groups are very worried about the loss and impact to a portion of the Beerwah State Forest. “It is important that we hear from these two competing tenderers about their plans for the upgrade so the Caloundra community knows where they stand. “It is essential that we all work collaboratively to ensure the community’s concerns and needs are listened to.” For more information visit www.tmr.qld.gov.au/ brucehwycaloundra2sunshinemwy or contact the project team on 1800 749 022 or via email brucehwycr2sm@tmr.qld.gov.au.

New reveg group for Mooloolah

Landcare is the well loved grassroots movement that harnesses individuals and groups to protect, restore and sustainably manage our natural environment and its productivity. The success of Landcare is due in part to the bottom up philosophy where the members help each other.

Locally, we have two Landcare groups operating – one at Maleny (Barung Landcare) and one at Mooloolah (Mooloolah River Waterwatch and Landcare). One of the areas that Mooloolah River Waterwatch and Landcare is involved in, is the propagation and provision of local native species of plants at their Glenview nursery for planting back onto local properties. On a daily basis people come into the nursery with variations of the same question – “what plant should I use for …?” The question could be in relation to any number of things: a swampy area, a frogpond, a rocky dry hill side, a screen, attracting butterflies, birds and wildlife, shade loving plants, quick growing plants. Another question they are often asked is,“what plant is that?” Mooloolah River Waterwatch and Landcare is wanting to provide an avenue where interested people can meet monthly to share ideas and maybe pool resources, visit members’ places to see what others are doing and to look at particular spots of interest. Anyone involved in planning or planting local native plants,

regardless of the size the area or where you are on your planting journey, is welcome. The first meeting will be held on Saturday, November 14 from 2.00pm at Mooloolah River Waterwatch and Landcare nursery (adjacent to the Holcim site on Steve Irwin Way, Glenview) where they will explore the landscaping and planting that has been done at the nursery and discuss the needs of those present. The monthly meetings will be included in the MRWL membership and will cost non-members a gold coin donation. For more information contact Ann on 0407 445 175.

Maleny students plan for power The world is in safe hands if the students of the Environment Committee at Maleny High School are anything to go by. Launching an ambitious project at the school last Thursday, the committee President Lilly Hamilton-Delmas and Treasurer Manikya Alister outlined their endeavours to make the high school carbon-neutral to a crowd of community, business, school and others from the local area. “The Environment Committee aspires to make real differences in the school and broader environments, as well as to help raise environmental awareness amongst the school student population,” said Lilly. “The committee – which is made up of students, teachers and others – has already worked with the school to reduce the energy usage and so decrease the carbon footprint the school creates. “But we wanted to look at making a bigger difference and so decided on working towards energy self-sufficiency through solar.” According to Manikya, the committee wanted to go further than other schools who passively off-set carbon usage via tree planting but still consume non-renewable fossil fuels for electricity. “We want Maleny High to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and have determined that establishing two 25kW solar panel systems is both achievable and sustainable,” explained Manikya. “Following that, our longer term goal is to establish another 50kW worth of solar power to account for future growth of the school – making a total of 100kW sustainable electricity generation.”
The Environment Committee working on the project – Olive Gole, Patrick Davis, Manikya Alister, Katya Hall and Lilly Hamilton-Delmas The committee have crunched the figures and have calculated that the first 50kW system will cost around $70,000. “To raise the funds, we are planning a multipronged approach involving applying for grants, fundraising events, via the Interact Club, crowd funding and through sponsorships and donations,” said Manikya, wearing his Treasurer’s hat. “The crowd funding page has already been established through gofundme.com and we will be launching a sponsorship appeal. “If around 50 sponsors come on board, it would only cost them as little as $25.00 a month for us to collectively achieve our target within five years … sooner if we raise funds through the other methods as well.
“And once the system is installed, the electricity savings made can – if the school is allowed – be put back into funding the second 50kW system.” Tia Law, the P& C President applauded the Environment Committee. “Congratulations on taking the initiative,” she said. “The P&C will be pleased to form a strong partnership with the Committee into the future and will help and support in any way we can.” The crowd funding site can be accessed by going to www.gofundme.com/malenysolarproject and anyone wanting to become a sponsor or to find out more is asked to go through the school on 5499 8111.

Rosetta Books are very excited to be hosting an evening with renowned journalist and novelist Matthew Condon who will be discussing his latest book ‘All Fall Down’. This book is the final instalment in his best selling ‘Three Crooked Kings’ trilogy. If you are interested in the murky and corrupt history of the Sunshine State, then this is an event not to be missed on Thursday, November 19 at the Maleny RSL. Over the last few months, Maleny has been attracting a number of well known high calibre authors with all the events receiving a great receptionfrom Hinterland locals. “We are just thrilled to have Matthew up here discussing his new book, as both his previous books in the trilogy have been extremely popular with customers,” said Anne Brown from Rosetta Books. The trilogy charts the gripping true story of the crime and corruption that infiltrated nearly half a century of Queensland’s history. Exposed by the Fitzgerald inquiry in the late 1980’s, the rampant corruption in the Sunshine State embroiled politicians, judiciary and the police force at all levels, with the consequences of those decades of corruption still having an impact today. Matthew has worked as a journalist for 30 years, both in Australia and overseas, and is currently an Adjunct Professor in the Creative Arts at Queensland University of Technology. He has written for a number of publications and currently writes for The Courier Mail.
Author Matthew Condon Tickets are $12.00, doors open at 6.00pm for a 6.30pm start. Booking essential at Rosetta Books; contact 5435 2134 or email reading@ rosettabooks.com.au. RSVP by November 16.
Win Win Win Thanks to Rosetta books we have a copy Matthew Condon’s latest novel ‘All Fall Down’ to be won. See our GC&M News Facebook page for competition details.

Sunshine Coast Business Awards A gala celebration was held recently to announce the winners of the 21st Sunshine Coast Business Awards, with a number of Glasshouse Country businesses and locals taking out awards. In congratulating each of the finalists and winners, Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson said once again it is fantastic to see firsthand the high calibre, innovative and progressive business community we have here on our Sunshine Coast. “It is inspiring and rewarding to hear the stories of each of the finalists and award winners, for them it is a very significant achievement to be here and receive the accolades they deserve” he said. HiveHaven of Beerburrum took out the Living Smart Service and Product category. HiveHaven, run by local bee keepers Jeff and Ann Ross, has designed an innovative range of honey bee and Australian stingless native bee boxes. The design and technology combats major threats from overheating, spore-based disease and pests as well as hive theft through GPS tracking. Glass House Mountains local Neil Collie of Rebel Sport was honoured with the Outstanding Employee of the Year. After dealing with personal illness three years ago Neil took the opportunity to go the extra mile to provide exceptional service, amazing experiences and to inspire customers by changing methods in store instead of online.

Fight Night returns After the massive success of last years’ inaugural ‘Fight Night’ boxing event, Hinterland Boxing Club (HBC) are holding ‘Fight Night 2’ at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club on Saturday, November 14. Last year around 400 people attended the tournament with the crowds loving the high calibre displays of skill and courage by the competitors. This year no doubt will prove to be just as electrifying as spectators will appreciate the professional progression of our young local rising stars, Daniel Mehta, Leroy McNamara, Tiarna Collins, Dana Coolwell, Mitchell Chalmers and Chaska Coolwell. The event, which is the major fundraiser for the year for HBC, will feature Olympic style boxing with our local stars competing against kids from a big team from NSW and members of the Australian Junior Boxing Team. Tournament organiser Stephen Pitt says it promises to be an action packed night with a very high level of competition. “A number of our athletes, through their hard work, discipline and dedication, have progressed from local level to National and International levels,” he said. “HBC is affiliated with Boxing Queensland, which in turn is associated with Boxing Australia and AIBA. “These affiliations ensure the consistently high level of professionalism that provides amateur competitors with the potential pathways to World Championship and Olympic levels.” This pathway has already been shown with young HBC star Dana Coolwell’s recent

Dana (right) takes on Jason Fawcett from NSW selection to represent Australia at the World Championships in Russia. Networks to spend another $50bn on Australia’s ‘dumb-and-dumber’ grid (from RenewEconomy.com.au, 30 October 2015 by Giles Parkinson)
Australian electricity consumers face no relief from their soaring electricity bills, with energy regulators allowing the country’s electricity networks to spend another $50 billion on poles and wires in the next five years. This cost has and will be passed on to consumers –
reducing what was once Australia’s competitive advantage of cheap power.
Over the past few months, the Australian Energy Regulator has approved spending, totalling $16.4 billion by NSW networks and $12.89 billion by Queensland networks. Householders and businesses be prepared by taking up the latest technology i.e. solar and battery storage.

Maleny Ambulance celebrates 100 years of service
DO NOT MISS OUT
Maleny Ambulance Station commemorated a significant milestone this week as it celebrates 100 years of service to the community of Maleny and surrounding areas. Sunshine Coast region Assistant Commissioner Chris Broomfield said the ambulance service had come a long way and it would not have been possible without the support of the community. “Formed in 1915, the Queensland Ambulance Transport Brigade Honorary Centre, quickly grew to cater for the growth in population in Maleny,” Mr Broomfield said. “The old ambulance station was located at 50 Maple Street, next to Cooke Park. Construction of the new station started in 1994 on the site of the original Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital in Bean Street and it’s documented that the construction took place during five months of rain. “The Ambulance Centre and staff residence were completed by July 1994 and the station was officially opened by the then Deputy Premier Tom Burns in August that year, ” he said. Members of the community had the opportunity to go down to the Maleny Ambulance Station to see just how far the service has evolved. The Maleny Local Ambulance Committee hosted a morning tea and had displays of historic and current equipment and vehicles as well as photos and memorabilia. QAS Commissioner Russel Bowles said the Queensland Ambulance Service has changed considerably since the Maleny station opened 100 years ago. “This open day has given the community a chance to peer back in history as well as speak with current, hard-working paramedics about the great service they provide,” he said.

Last Thursday, Brisbane Airport’s International arrivals area was flooded with khaki to launch November as a celebration of Steve Irwin’s conservation legacy. Ambassadors from Brisbane Airport’s Visitor Information Centre donned khaki shirts as they greeted international guests arriving into Brisbane. Steve Irwin Day will take place on November 15 at Australia Zoo to celebrate the extraordinary life of the one and only Crocodile Hunter followed by the Steve Irwin Gala Dinner at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre on November 21 raising money to support the wildlife conservation programs he was so passionate about. Smiles were aplenty at the arrivals gate as guests, many of whom were stepping foot on Australian soil for the first time, were welcomed by some of our country’s most iconic animals. India the koala, Anthony the cockatoo, Luigi the blue-tongue lizard and Mulga the woma python were joined by Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors to say g’day to passengers coming through customs – a true blue experience and great representation of our friendly, Aussie hospitality!

Head along to the local dog shows Contributed by Helen Weil
The Sunshine Kennel Club will be hosting two dog shows at the Beerwah Sportgrounds on the weekend of November 14 and 15. The first show is on Saturday and commences at 4.00pm, then on Sunday there is another Championship Show starting at 9.00am and also an Open Show (judged by trainee judges) running concurrently but underway at 8.30am. It’s a great place to come and visit if you like dogs. The variety of breeds being exhibited is wide and varied. Besides the breeds we all know well, there are quite a number of rarer breeds being shown. The exhibitors are friendly and helpful with information about their breeds and with allowing a pat or a cuddle – baby puppies are always a favourite. The Saturday show begins with sweepstakes for baby puppies (three to six months) and puppy class entries (six to 12 months). Formal judging of the breeds will begin at about 4.30pm and is in alphabetical order. This means that for each show Afghans and Australian Cattle Dogs will be on early and then judging alphabetically across the seven rings that will be operating, breeds such as Welsh Springers and Weimaraners will be at the end. The same alphabetical order of judging will occur on Sunday. Also on the grounds there will be stalls selling a variety of ‘doggy paraphernalia’, a coffee van and a canteen with great food. Please feel welcome to come and mingle and enjoy watching the dogs and handlers. We expect the entry to be about around 500 dogs so there is plenty to see. The atmosphere is casual and friendly and best of all it is free. For more information contact David on 0488 947 444.

Accolades to Glasshouse Country Toastmasters
Contributed by Gweneth Brooks Secretary On Sunday, November 1, Glasshouse Country Toastmasters participated against other Toastmaster Clubs from an area that stretches from Burpengary to Mooloolah and west to Kilcoy. Gweneth Brooks, Kerry Gillam and Martine Goedhart participated in the actual speaking contest, whilst Esther Frizzo was one of the driving forces behind the huge task of organising such an event. The competition was held at the St Columba College in Caboolture giving a very enjoyable day to all those who attended. Our team did very well with Gweneth Brooks being placed second in the Evaluation Section. To the club’s delight, Esther Frizzo was awarded the prestige award for the year, and named, Toastmaster of the Year. This award goes to a toastmaster within the area who has excelled in all facets of the toastmaster movement. An excellent buffet morning tea and lunch was provided by the catering class of the school. The Glasshouse Country luck was with the club on the day with Esther Frizzo winning two of the major raffle prizes and Gweneth Brooks winning another one. It was a pleasure to meet Mr Jock Elliott again. He was the World Champion Pubic Speaker in 2013.

See-through butterflies
The common Glasswing butterfly Acraea andromacha (also known as the Little Greasy or Small Greasy butterfly) occurs locally and is characterised by having delicate see-through wings. Amongst other things, it feeds on a native plant called Spade Flower (Hybanthus stellarioides). This delicate-lookingnative perennial is one of three species of Hybanthus (Greek for humpback flower) occurring in Queensland. Spade Flower is found in moist understoreys and open areas of forest and wooded grassland, often in amongst native grasses. It is a relatively common plant and is found from Illawarra in NSW, north to Bundaberg; in the Sunshine Coast hinterland it can be found in most open areas of forest including around the Glass House Mountains. Spade Flower grows to between 30 cm and 60 cm and bears solitary, bright orange or yellow, spade-like flowers on spindly stems. Flowering is largely dependent on weather and occurs mainly in Spring and Summer. Spade Flower is quite closely related to Violets (it is a member of the Violaceae family). It self-seeds readily and will grow in red soil,

ENROL NOW FOR 2016 PREP TO YEAR 6
School News Students fashion on the fields
Contributed by Kylie Merola Landsborough State School students got into the spirit of the Melbourne Cup by donning their best race wear and staging a 'Fashions on the Field' event. Students and teachers took to the catwalk, parading outfits in a bid to win a prize for the best dressed. Some wore colourful outfits and elaborate head wear while others dressed as jockeys and bookies. Principal Kristy Walton said the dress up day was a yearly tradition at the school and one that is a lot of fun. Students enjoyed the chance to dress up, swapping their uniforms for race wear
Landsborough State School prides itself on its award winning teachers and an enthusiastic, happy and friendly atmosphere. In keeping with the school's motto 'Your Future, Our Focus' they strive to ensure that all staff and parents work together to provide the best possible outcomes for all students. They are committed to excellent academic results, providing a diverse curriculum that aims to challenge every student to realise their potential. To coincide with State Education Week, Landsborough State School recently asked the school community to tell them what they love about the school. Here is what they had to say... WHAT THE STUDENTS LOVE: > Kind people - everyone is your friend. > Great teachers. > Nice uniform which we wear with pride. > Lunchtime clubs - dance, earth warriors, sport and Chappy. > Lovely gardens and playgrounds. > Technology - iPads, iPods, computer lab and Smart boards. > The school's history - 136 years old. A lot of our parents and grandparents went to school here! > Everyone is happy and this school makes me happy too. > Buzz Day celebrations if we have good behaviour. > They make learning fun!
WHAT THE PARENTS LOVE: > Approachable, friendly and caring teachers. > The small school community - everyone is like family. Children have a sense of belonging. > Information sessions for parents (to keep us up to date with what our kids are learning). > Welcoming atmosphere. > Wide range of extra-curricular activities - dance, art, swimming, sports, music and drama. > High behaviour expectations (with rewards). > I've never had an issue with bullying at this school. > After school hours care service. > A Principal whose door is always open! > My kids love it! As a parent, all I want for my children is for them to be happy...and at Landsborough State School they are!
Landsborough's teaching staff looked very glamorous
Getting prepared for Prep
Young students enrolled into Beerwah State School for Prep 2016 have the opportunity to attend a brand new initiative for the school, a Playgroup for Pre-Preps. The children are given the opportunity to come along to the prep classroom and interact with other peers and a member of staff in a relaxed and encouraging environment. The children participate in all kinds of fun activities, storytelling, craft, building blocks, and song and dance. This is a fantastic introduction to their new beginnings at Beerwah State School. For enrolment details please email principal@beerwahss.eq.edu.au or call the school office on 5436 5555. Two Pre-Preps building a magnificent city from wooden blocks with classroom teacher Mrs Wild
Enrolments are currently being taken for 2016 in all year levels from Prep through to Year 6. Don't delay... ensure that you enrol your child today! For further information contact the school on 5436 2777.

Students know the joy of giving
Students and families of Mooloolah State School have been digging deep over the last month to gather items for needy children from babies to teenagers. They have filled 80 shoe boxes full of items things like socks, underwear, soap, toothbrushes, combs and brushes, as well as books, pens, toys, stuffed animals, writing paper, and games and are proud of their efforts to provide some happiness to children that have very little. The students know that their hard work will provide some smiles and help to the children of the ‘Operation Christmas Child’ by Samaritans Purse. A huge thank you to Fiona Cran and the RI team for organising this every year and well done to all students and people everywhere that have done a wonderful thing for so many children. You should feel proud of yourselves. www.gcnews.com.au

Update: Bruce Highway Upgrade – Caloundra Road to Sunshine Motorway
Last week, Fulton Hogan/Seymour Whyte Joint Venture and The Infrastructure Group were announced as shortlisted proponents for the detailed design and construction of the Bruce Highway upgrade project from Caloundra Road to the Sunshine Motorway. Each proponent will be required to submit a design and construction proposal and I will be encouraging them to address the community’s concerns and existing safety issues to ensure that the final design is the best possible fit for our region. Construction is expected to start in late 2016. For more information visit http://www.tmr. qld.gov.au/brucehwycaloundra2sunshinemwy
Big win for Maleny
Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve has been successful in receiving $1 million in Federal funding as part of the Tourism Demand-Driver Infrastructure Programme. The funding will help re-develop the existing visitor facility and construct a new elevated ramp running alongside the rainforest, a viewing deck, a meeting room and a café.
Free Trade Agreements
On October 27 a Free Trade Agreement Seminar was held in Caloundra attracting 50 local business owners interested in how the FTA’s signed with Korea, Japan and China may benefit their business. For more information on the Government’s FTA’s visit www.fta.gov.au
School Leavers’ Guide
Last month I visited Maleny State High School to drop off my 2015 School Leavers’ Guide. The Guide will assist both students and parents to find important information regarding education and training options, health, finding employment, financial support, renting and housing. Support local business
I know many of us are starting to think about our Christmas shopping list so I just wanted to pass on a friendly reminder to try and shop local if you can. We have so many small businesses offering great service and retail products that I’m sure you will find more than a few items from your Chrissy list close to home. IGA gift cards, a magazine or cookbook from the newsagent or a voucher for dinner at a local restaurant would certainly be well received by even the fussiest of family members! It was also recently announced that Small Business Week will be held in late February next year and I plan to make some big announcements in the coming weeks about my plans for promoting small business in our Glass House area, so stay tuned! Better yet, sign up for my monthly eNewsletter and you will always be kept up-to-date with important information.
The upgrade of the Bruce Highway to six lanes from the Caloundra Road interchange to Caboolture is competing with other road infrastructure projects across the country for funding. We need your help to show that the community wants the upgrade and that our region needs the upgrade to continue to prosper. Sign up at www.boostthebruce.com.au

NOVEMBER 11 2015
It certainly was a busy, productive, Mooloolah Breakfast Meeting this month, with Mark McArdle MP, Member for Caloundra joining local residents as our special guest. A number of state and local issues were raised which we will work in partnership to resolve. This included the stop lines at the intersection of Eudlo and Mooloolah Road with Bray; speed signage along Diamond Valley Road; leasing of Mooloolah Community Centre; possibilities of extending the public access to Mooloolah School and community pool; the proposed site for the Youth Skate Bowl; and local laws. Many thanks to Mark and of course to our local community members for attending the breakfast meeting.
Christmas Newsletter competition
I am pleased to announce that this year Woodford State School took out the winning prize in my annual Christmas artwork competition. An entry from Beerburrum State School took out second place and Maleny had third. Even the judges, Tony and Jane from Art on Cairncross found it hard to pick a winner this year as the entries really were outstanding. The children were asked to show their favourite Christmas tradition and it was great to see how many families have their own special traditions that they uphold. This year I will be sending a Christmas newsletter to all households in Glass House in December which will have many of the winning entries and also some valuable information on what is happening in Glass House.
End of the school year
We need your help
Marvellous Mooloolah update
This time of year I try and attend as many local school presentation events as possible. It really is a great way to finish off the school year and personally be able to congratulate those students who are embarking on a new high school journey or that have excelled in their school achievements. After serving as the Member for this region for now nearly seven years, I am seeing kids graduate that I met back in their early schooling life. All the parents and teachers out there should be proud of the job they are doing with our kids as so many of them have a very bright future ahead.

Mooloolah locals, if you are interested in keeping up-to-date with local projects or raising any issues or queries, remember you are always welcome to come along to the Mooloolah Breakfast Meetings held on the first Thursday of every month at 7.00am for a 7.30am start. Contact Mooloolah Community Centre, Darryl from Mooloolah Hardware, or my office on 5441 8043 or email Lesleigh.elmes@ sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au for further information.
Pony Show
Heads up the Mooloolah Pony Club will be utilising the Mooloolah Recreation Reserve for overflow car parking during the Open T-Shirt Hack Day being held on November 28. Good luck to all the riders on the day.
Have your say
Council is reviewing its local laws and the community is invited to get involved. Our local laws reflect community needs to ensure safety, harmony and good rule. They govern such things as parking, keeping animals, approvals for activities, bathing reserves and dog off-leash areas. Community members wishing to comment on the proposed amendments to the local laws have until 5.00pm, November 30 to provide feedback. Visit council’s website for further details.
And finally…
Massive congratulations to Mooloolah State School for the absolutely fabulous art show they held recently showcasing the works of a number of wonderful, talented artists in the making. Well done!

You Said It Our postman
I would really like to take my hat off to the local postman that does Railway Parade at Glass House Mountains. He is very polite and really goes out of his way to get the mail delivered properly; I know that he has to sort the mail in the morning before he goes out on the road to deliver it. Not many people realise what goes into this job they think he just goes around putting letters in letterboxes, well that's not the case. There's a whole lot more and on top of that he has parcel's too which need to be signed for and many other bits of different mail to be delivered as well. I know that a lot of people put the postman down and say he doesn't do his job properly and that he should know everyone in the neighbourhood. Well it's not that simple when people keep moving in and out of the area. So I'm writing today to say a special thank you to our postman; I know you’re doing a great job. Rose Glass House Mountains
Shopping locally
Like others, we have had the odd experience of poor customer service, but to provide some balance to these recent letters encouraging us all to take our business elsewhere, we are sharing our good stories. Over the past couple of years, we have been fortunate to find some pretty spectacular local people, with fantastic results using a Peachesterbased electrician and a Beerwah-based plastererbuilder.

Roys Road shame
The new Roys Road - Bells Creek Road intersection has been a great improvement to bring traffic to and from Beerwah and the Bruce Highway. But the road surface on the strip between Burys Road and the old Forestry houses is absolutely atrocious and is a downright dangerous. The improved connection means that more cars and trucks are now using the shortcut to Beerwah. Tourists coming to Beerwah from that direction must think we are a forgotten backwater if the road condition is any indication. Can the Council and Main Roads show some
We use an excellent Landsborough-based plumber and a great bobcat guy from Glass House. We get the car serviced and repaired with a local Beerwah mechanic and use a local provider for our small engine work. We use a wonderful Beerwah computer business because they go above and beyond to help us when we need it. There are some great service-providers in the Beerwah area who do quality work and have a great customer focus and we thank you! Peter and Michelle Peachester
Maleny High timetable
Calling all parents of Year 11 students at Maleny SHS to the next P&C meeting to be held on Thursday, November 19 at the school. A seconded motion will be tabled for the disendorsement of the planned return to a fiveday timetable, just for the current Year 11 group. The grounds are that it: breaches a contract between the school, this group of students and their families; it creates unnecessary disadvantage, particularly for those students with school-sponsored traineeship and apprenticeship
civic pride and fix up this Third World road before someone is seriously injured or worse. B Green Glass House Mountains contracts; therefore, it is discriminatory; and that the process has been a flawed one. Please come along and have your say and participate in the vote. Those with students in Year 11 have the most to lose and are encouraged to attend. Brian Higgins Maleny
Cup raises $6000 for charities
The $6000 proceeds from the Melbourne Cup event held at Wedding at Tiffany’s in Maleny will be equally shared by Hummingbird House, the first children’s hospice for Queensland and Shed the Light Nepal, a women’s empowerment project in earthquake damaged villages in Nepal. Thanks to the generosity of the Tilse family, owners of Tiffany’s, 100 guests enjoyed canapes on the deck, a fashion parade by Simply Stylish and Imelda’s Shoes of Maleny, and fine dining as they watched the Melbourne Cup. Our thanks go to everyone who attended our Melbourne Cup function for their generosity and making the event such a huge success. Jeff Cornfoot President Rotary Club of Maleny

Senior Moments Living the life at Maleny Maleny Grove continues to embrace the wider community with recent sponsorship of Mapleton Bowls Club Jacaranda Day and the annual Range Croquet four day competition. Village representative Andrew Acocks who attended the event said Mapleton Bowls Club enjoyed a very successful day. “There was a roll up of 64 players including visiting members of six coast bowls clubs while Range Croquet is expecting a lively competition between club members and visitors,” he said. Since opening in 2010, the award-winning designed Maleny Grove has very much become part of the local community providing sponsorship of events and with various groups including Blackall Range Care enjoying the use of the Clubhouse for some of their activities. Maleny Grove manager Kaye Smyth, brings to the village over 25 years’ experience in the retirement living and aged care industry. Kaye said it was lovely to see the sense of community that had developed within this very supportive village. “Residents have come from the local area and interstate seeking a more relaxed retirement environment. With freedom from the worry of house and garden maintenance, residents can enjoy activities within the village and those of the many clubs offered within the wider community,” she said. Maleny Grove promotes the philosophy of ‘Your Home, Our Care’ which gives individuals the choice to be as involved or as private as they choose, with the knowledge that discrete care support is available as required. For more information or to arrange a personal inspection of Maleny Grove please contact 1300 55 65 75 or view www.LiveLifeVillages.com.au

Glasshouse Mountains Probus What is Probus? We're an association of retired and semi - retired folk who meet monthly with the idea to keep our minds active, share our interests and enjoy the company of new friends with our main goals fun, friendship and fellowship. Our club is simple in structure and free from the constraints of a service club so we're not a fundraising body, rather we're self-funded with no obligation to any outside activity or association. We manage the Club's business with a 10 person Management Committee who meets on the first Wednesday of the month. This optimises our time for the regular second Wednesday meeting of the general membership. This general meeting involves a half hour element to update the members, then a half hour smoko break followed by a guest speaker, and we've been fortunate to have informative and entertaining guests. We're done by 12.00noon and then it's lunch - we prefer a venue where we can BYO to share and the Beerwah Hall - ideal for camaraderie - it's just right. Our fourth Wednesday is billed as our outing for the month. This may be to organisations, or activities or places of current interest to members including one or other of our back yards for a barbecue. In between we do have a delightful monthly musical morning, a Book Club and an afternoon Mahjong group every fortnight. We also have occasional functions such as our ‘Xmas in August’ luncheon, at Landsborough this time, and routine monthly ‘Upcoming Entertainment Events’ for our enjoyment. We're a band of 50 plus members, and it's of interest to you come and have a look. Phone Gordon on 5439 0446.

Age no obstacle to Peter exercising The oldest member of the Beerwah Heart Foundation Walkers group, Peter (aged 87), was recently presented with an award by the group’s convener Frank Cockram, to commemorate his completion of 500 Heart Foundation walks. Peter said that walking regularly is not only beneficial to one's heart health, but recent research by brain scientists has shown that regular walkers can reduce their risk of dementia by almost 20%. The group has a repertoire of over 60 local walks, some more adventurous than others, and caters for walkers of all ages and various degrees of fitness. The Heart Foundation Walkers meet at the Beerwah Library car park at 6.20am on week days, and welcome new walkers to their ranks. Phone Frank on 5494 0709 for further information.

Karen Beckett - Hollywood to Broadway Celebrate the Christmas season and final Judy Henzell Sunshine Melodies Concert series performance for 2015 with Karen Beckett – Hollywood to Broadway. Karen will take to The Events Centre stage on Wednesday, December 2 with the greatest songs of the 20th century from theatre and cinema. Karen Beckett is one of the most popular cabaret performers in Australia today. Born in Perth, Western Australia, Karen moved to Sydney in her late teens to pursue a career in entertainment. Before long she had performed on all major Australian Television variety shows and won a 36-show engagement at the MGM Grande Hotel in Las Vegas. This was followed by national tours with Bob Hope and Neil Sedaka and the release of Karen’s first album, ‘Romantically Inclined'. Karen’s sensational voice together with the professional and charming nature of her performances led Bill DeAngelis, Director of Entertainment at the MGM Grande to comment, "I have no doubt the whole world will hear of you Karen”. Her versatility in both cabaret and theatre also landed her the leading role of 'Fantine' in an Australian production of ‘Les Miserables’. Karen has recorded three albums, ‘Romantically Inclined’, 'Here to Eternity' which receives airplay both in Australia and Europe, and her latest CD 'When Somebody Loves You' featuring timeless ballads from her cabaret shows. Karen loves to sing and has entertained audiences all over the world. She weaves her show with fabulous songs and delightful anecdotes from her life. She’ll sing the songs of your life and your memories. Don’t miss an opportunity to experience this wonderful Australian entertainer. The Events Centre, Caloundra will host this event on Wednesday, December 2. Show starts at 11.00am with a complimentary morning tea at 10.00am. Giving up licence made easier for older drivers
The State’s peak motoring body has urged families to have the conversation with older relatives about the right time to hang up the car keys following the launch of a new service by the State Government. RACQ welcomed the recent initiative for seniors to receive a free proof of identification card and partial refund after surrendering their licence. RACQ Executive Manager Technical and Safety Policy Steve Spalding said the decision to give up driving could be daunting. “We want Queenslanders to talk to older family members and have them consider their ability to continue driving,” Mr Spalding said. “The decision to stop driving may be due to medical reasons or a diminished capacity, and previously that meant older people were left without suitable identification. “We believe any initiative to make the transition from driving to being offthe-road easier is a good thing.” Mr Spalding said there were a number of transportation alternatives for seniors no longer driving. “Many people believe handing over your licence is the end of your independence, but it doesn’t have to be,” he said. “There are a number of transport options available including taxis, community shuttle buses and public transport.” Mr Spalding said in Queensland, drivers over the age of 75, as well as drivers with medical conditions affecting their ability to drive, were required to carry a medical certificate when driving. “If you have concerns about a family member’s ability to drive you should contact your local GP.” RACQ’s YouTube video ‘When is it time to stop driving?’ can be viewed at http://goo.gl/a5Etzh.

Invisible hearing aids? ihear brings you the world’s smallest hearing aid – SoundLens from Starkey. Every day thousands of Australians with hearing loss, struggle through conversations instead of enjoying the rich sounds that life has to offer. Hearing loss can be very isolating and have a significant impact on relationships and emotional states. Don’t miss out on those special moments with family and friends because of hearing loss. There are many reasons why people choose against seeking a solution to their hearing problem. Some incorrectly believe a hearing aid won’t be able to solve their type of hearing loss. While others fear the social stigma of ‘old age’ that has been in the past associate with wearing hearing aids. And let’s face it, no one wants to feel like they are getting old! Leading hearing specialist ihear, is excited to share the solution for those who say “…you will never see me wearing a hearing aid”. The SoundLens is the world’s first completely invisible hearing aid, and is custom made for superior comfort. It is so tiny that it sits inside the second bend of the ear canal, offering complete invisibility. Despite its small stature, the SoundLens is packed with the most advanced hearing technology to date, resulting in natural sound amplification and superior clarity for hearing speech in background noise.
Business feature
Local hearing expert, Audiometrist Lisa Burley from ihear Caloundra is certainly impressed. “The SoundLens is truly amazing and incredibly popular with our clients because it simply can’t be seen once it’s in the ear,” she said. “Hearing speech in noise is something that has previously been a challenge for hearing aid manufacturers. The SoundLens has overcome this challenge like never before, resulting in easy
listening for the wearer that reduces listening effort and mental fatigue in noisy environments”. Today 50% of Australians with a hearing loss are below retirement age, so it is no wonder that there is a high demand for an invisible hearing solution. “As the world gets louder, the age of those with hearing loss gets younger. The effect of noise exposure means we are increasingly seeing people in their 40’s and 50’s coming to us with a hearing problem,” said Lisa. 80% of the population will lose some of their hearing as they age and research shows the majority of people wait from seven to 10 years before they do anything about their hearing difficulties. The longer people wait to have their hearing needs addressed, the lower their chances of rehabilitation as the sensory receptors in the brain deteriorate over time if not kept active by sounds. Why put off getting your hearing checked when a hearing screening takes about 15 minutes and it could change your life for the better? At ihear, they have a wide range of solutions to suit all types of hearing loss, lifestyles and budgets. For more information contact ihear on (07) 5492 6939. Conveniently located in Beerwah, Caloundra, Gympie, Hervey Bay, Maleny, Maroochydore, Sippy Downs and a new location in Landsborough.

With Donna Keogh-Gordon, from Skinfit While they say age is an issue of mind over matter: if you don't mind, it doesn't matter. Aging is actually an accumulation of damage to macromolecules, cells, tissues and organs, largely from the environment and our lifestyles. If any of that damage can be repaired, the result is a

Bigger plates and portions drive overeating and drinking New research shows larger cups and plates, oversized food portions and supersized deals are driving Sunshine Coast locals to over consume, putting their health at risk. A new study has found people consistently consume more food and drink when offered largersized portions, packages or tableware than when offered smaller-sized versions. Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said poor portion choices, upsize deals and simply bigger plates and bowls could increase the risk of chronic disease. “Consuming too much food and drink can lead to weight gain, which fast-tracks the risk of many diseases, including some cancers,” Ms Clift said. “More than 49% of Sunshine Coast adults are overweight or obese and only 7% eat enough fruits and veggies daily. “We encourage consumers to be aware of how much food and drink they serve themselves, and to pay attention to the size of plates, bowls and cups. “Using smaller tableware and being mindful when eating can help to limit overconsumption. It’s important to stop eating when full.” The research found people of all sizes ate and drank more when presented with more – regardless of sex, age or weight. Cancer Council Queensland recommends all Queenslanders learn to portion their plates at home for a healthy lifestyle.

Living - Arts Mountains prove a winner With a beautiful photograph of the Glass House Mountains, sunshine coast photographer Irma Ferreira has been announced the Landscape and Wildlife Photography Award winner in the Sunshine Coast Art Prize 2015. Sponsored by the Sunshine Coast Council Environment Levy, this award category was designed to raise awareness of the environment, its beauty, significance and its intrinsic connection to Sunshine Coast lifestyles and livelihoods. Finalists in the award demonstrated excellence in capturing the native plants, animals and natural landscapes of the Sunshine Coast. One of the judges - Queensland Museum photographer Gary Cranitch said the diversity, talent and subject matter of the finalists’ pieces was stunning. “The natural environment of the Sunshine Coast shown in these photographs is truly spectacular,” Mr Cranitch said.
“Irma Ferreira’s piece was a stand out for me, displaying a subtle mix of pastel tones and rocky volcanic mountains. It was evocative and timeless.” Irma Ferreira received an $8000 prize and a $1500 Highly Commended prize was awarded to Mt Coolum photographer Shanna Bignel. Cr McKay said the exhibition captured the remarkable beauty and diversity of the natural environment that surrounds us here on the Coast. “I encourage everyone to visit the Arts and Ecology Centre to see this exhibition and truly appreciate how lucky we are to be surrounded by this beautiful environment.” The chosen artworks explored local environmental themes and issues and the relationship between people and the Sunshine Coast's natural environment. The Landscape and Wildlife Photography exhibition runs until November 25 at the Arts and Ecology Centre, Maroochy Bushland Botanic Garden.
Feeling arty!
Glenview State School’s 'Evening of Arts' went off with a bang as the Junior Dance crew performed 'I Like to Move it' in their jungle-themed outfits. The colour from the artworks on display, coupled with the musical performances and high energy dances made for a memorable and captivating night. Students performed solo, in bands and in choirs; and the 240 strong crowd enjoyed a sophisticated supper prepared by foodie-fanatic Jodi Buemi and her family.
With nearly half of all students involved in either the instrumental or choral program, Glenview’s music teacher, Mrs Chelsea Harry could be very proud. “It’s a beautiful school to work in, with very supportive parents and staff,” she says. Students are able to learn all of the orchestral instruments along with guitar and piano, and dance is taught in lunch-hours by Mrs Melanie Osborne. Seemingly, they have it all!

Price $419,000
On Saturday, November 14 the Maleny Film Society will be presenting Court, a new Indian creation from brilliant young Indian director Chaitanya Tamhane. The film flies out of the court into the real world of the slums of Mumbai where the 'crime' occurred, and into the personal lives and backgrounds of the judge, the prosecuting counsel and the defending counsel. It also examines the music and lyrics of the criminal, a folksinger whose messages may or may not have encouraged a suicide. Narayan Kamble is an elderly street-popular artist, whose songs to the streets resonate with the dilemmas of India's complex system of caste. Accusing his songs of initiating the suicide of a sewage system worker questions the freedom of speech within the Indian democracy. The movie will be shown at the Maleny Community Centre, screening at 7.15pm. Dinner from 6.00pm catered by Wild Rocket, with bar and hot drinks stand. For information www.malenyfilmsociety.info or phone 5429 6951.

by calling them saints. Their qualities have a universal appeal as well as a challenge to us to live better lives. There are of course many saints alive and well and making a difference in our world. Prayers for the dead, however reaches deep into our human history. Ultimately it reminds us that when it comes to remembering our loved ones and all who have died we do not just look backwards to remember and give thanks. We can also look forward with hope and desire that one day we will be reunited with them. God bless, Fr Kevin.

GLASSHOUSE COMMUNITY CHURCH
Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship In many Christian communities the month of November is a time to remember in a special way those who have died. Remembering the dead is a long held human tradition and belief. Even the origins of Halloween, All Hallows Eve, can be traced back to a time when it was thought that on this one night contact could be made with the spirits of those who had died. Today there is an increasing number of people wearing pumpkins and witches hats on the eve of All Saints but I wonder if their belief in our relationship with the dead is appreciated and fostered. The impact on our life by those loved relatives and friends who have died can never be fully measured. That is why we miss them so much and why the ache in our hearts never goes away but is something we learn to live with - like a nuisance neighbour. Their love and example continues to inspire us long after they have gone and no one and nothing can ever take their place. Some church communities go to the trouble of naming these special people
Dining with Lions - Do you like to make a difference? Does helping others give you a warm fuzzy feeling? Do you like living in Mooloolah / Glenview / Eudlo region? If you answered yes to two or more of those questions then perhaps you should consider joining the Mooloolah Valley Lions Club.On Tuesday, November 17 we will be hosting our last Lions dinner for the year, at Glenview Gardens. This dinner is a great opportunity to meet our group and see if Lions could be for you. Our guest speaker this month is from Cittamani House, a group that provides home palliative care services in the area. We are looking forward to supporting this wonderful group and hearing more about what they are doing. Dinner is a great value two course meal for only $22.00. To book a seat please contact Diane on 0403 871.

Just for Laughs
It Costs No More To Hire A Proven Professional
Don’t forget… There was an elderly couple who in their old age noticed that they were getting a lot more forgetful, so they decided to go to the doctor. The doctor told them that they should start writing things down so they don't forget. They went home and the old lady told her husband to get her a bowl of ice cream. "You might want to write it down," she said. The husband said, "no, I can remember." She then told her husband she wanted a bowl of ice cream with whipped cream. "Write it down," she told him, and again he said, "No, no, I can remember." Then
the old lady said she wanted a bowl of ice cream with whipped cream and a cherry on top. "Write it down," she told her husband and again he said, "No, I got it. You want a bowl of ice cream with whipped cream and a cherry on top." He spends an unusually long time in the kitchen, over 30 minutes. He comes out to his wife and hands her a plate of eggs and bacon. She stares at the plate for a moment, then looks at her husband and asks, "where's the toast?"
