ell the Federal Election is over and this will mean plenty of people are breathing a sigh of relief. For many, during an election campaign, the overload of political advertising, political information and political commentary can become overwhelming. And yes we did receive some very direct feedback about ‘the overload’ that some readers felt about the ‘paid political advertising’ via a letter to the editor, and a couple of messages on Facebook, along with a couple of phone calls to the office. In response to, and using our fair and equitable approach of how we operate at GCNews, we have chosen to share our perspectives with readers – on our letters page (page 17).

As we cannot control the budgets that each candidate has or how they choose to spend it, we felt it was important for us to offer each and every candidate the same amount of free editorial space – which we did over the four editions before the election. Each of the candidates received three quarterpage spaces to answer questions that we put to them, which was significantly more generous than any other newspaper in the Electorate of Fisher. We got some great feedback from readers who were struggling to find out who they all were, and what they stood for.

Local athlete takes on the world's fittest
Glass House Mountains Personal Trainer, Bianca Aiono Robertson recently challenged the world’s fittest Crossfit athletes at the New Zealand Wellington Cup and returned home with the team title and an impressive individual 5th place finish. The trans-Tasman CrossFit event tested Australian and New Zealand teams in all aspects of fitness – from Olympic weightlifting, through to gymnastics movements and cardiovascular fitness. Bianca represented Crossfit 4551 alongside team mates Justin Williams, Johnny Kennedy, Lachlan Cauchi and Melissa Porter and battled it out in seven events across two days in a range of different Olympic weight lifting, gymnastics and calisthenics to discover the fittest, strongest and fastest athletes of the event. The teams also had the opportunity to test their mettle against some of the world’s best Crossfitters who made up an All Star Team. The All Star team put on a great show, and there was fierce rivalry between the Kiwi and Aussie sides. Bianca started Day two in 2nd place, but fell to an overall 5th position after a surprise double points round allowed her kiwi rivals to rapidly gain on the previous days hard fought efforts.

HINTERLAND ACCOUNTING SERVICES Bianca in action “It was an amazing experience to compete in the finals alongside two of my heroes and to come away with the Team event win," she said. “My highlight of the weekend was being the only amateur competitor to actually beat both Lindsey and Ruth in an event which involved a rowing sprint and maximum effort front squat. But my most embarrassing moment was being the only athlete to fall into the Wellington harbour in the kayak race!” Bianca was also a member of the Crossfit 4551 team which placed 10th at the Australian Regional Games in May. “For someone who’s only been in this sport for 18 months I’m absolutely ecstatic at our success, and incredibly grateful for my coach, Michael Bonney and the team atmosphere he has developed at Crossfit 4551. It seems surreal that a little shed in the backstreets of Caloundra can make such an impact on a worldwide sport.”

No way back for local koalas Last week State Government issued a statement announcing that the footprint for the future upgrade of the Bruce Highway between Caloundra Road and Sunshine Motorway has been dramatically decreased from 35 hectares down to 24 hectares and that no National Park or environmentally sensitive land to the immediate north-west of the Caloundra Road interchange will be affected. However, according to Narelle McCarthy from the Sunshine Coast Environment Council, these figures were originally released back in April, making the announcement a ‘non-announcement’. “We also take issue with the inference that no environmentally sensitive land will be impacted. “All the land from the southern-most limit of the road north to Caloundra Road and east to Bruce Highway containing significant conservation values will be subjected to varying levels of impact and disturbance. This entire area will be effectively wiped out and left with very little ecological value and habitat functionality. “The loss of biodiversity from clearing 24ha and all but destroying a much larger area still represents unacceptable impact,” said Narelle. Future plans include widening the highway from six to ultimately eight lanes, and would require six hectares of state forest to be cleared from a remaining nine hectares. “The lack of recognition of the high conservation values within the Beerwah State Forest site which will be destroyed is a concern and misrepresents the overall extent of ecological impact,” she said Mr Powell said the planning study involved extensive environmental investigations to ensure any potential impacts would be minimised and closely managed. “Investigations so far have included assessments of the regional ecosystems, koala habitat and targeted surveys for fauna species known to occur in close proximity to the project area,” he said.
“When the project moves into the detailed design phase, more targeted environmental investigations will be undertaken and suitable mitigation measures and treatments will be considered,” he said. Which is a good thing, as the wildlife survey undertaken for the Department of Transport and Main Roads concluded that the area had no koalas or evidence of koalas living there – something which is news to Ray and Murray Chambers from Sunshine Coast Koala Wildlife Rescue. “We know there are koalas in the area – there’s not many left, but they are definitely there. We’ve had reports of a mum and joey crossing near Daisy’s Place as well as recent reports of koalas on the Caloundra side,” said Ray. “The forest that is going to be cleared is a vital part of the hinterland Caloundra koala movement corridor. Why do we have to condemn the koala to extinction when there are other alternative options available to Main Roads which won’t involve the massive clearing, but will still give them the road expansion they want? “What I’d like to know is who will take the responsibility if, during or after the road construction works, a koala is killed along that stretch of the highway, Caloundra Road or Steve Irwin Way? Who’ll be held responsible for their failure of duty of care to these iconic voiceless native animals? “Which politician or Main Roads engineer will say they got it wrong, apologise to the nation and resign from their jobs? “The silence will be deafening,” he exclaimed. For those concerned about the loss of the forest and its native animals, a group called ‘Save the Iconic Forest at the North End of Steve Irwin Way’ is collating a petition and evidence of the environmental value the area holds. They can be contacted via their Facebook page – just search for ‘Save the Iconic Forest’.

The news was very welcome to many, especially the Twin Cedars Homeowners Association who have been lobbying State Government for an extended period to improve the safety of Steve Irwin Way. In response to their representations to Scott Emerson, Minister for Transport and Main Roads, they received a letter stating that he hoped the changes would provide better safety and amenity for the community. However, when we published the changed speed limit onto our Facebook page last week, the reaction was far from unanimous support. The posting had over 3,500 views and was shared almost 70 times by others. The comments posted by our Facebook ‘likers’ were mixed, with some thinking it a great idea and others ranging from being perplexed by the decision to disagreeing with the need for a reduced speed limit. In addition to the speed limit changes, Minister Emerson advised the Twin Cedars Homeowners Association that he has asked Main Roads to investigate ‘the request for traffic signals at the Reed Street intersection’. In the letter to the Homeowners Association – dated August 29 – The Minister indicated that the investigations would take two weeks. The installation of traffic lights on the Reed Street and Steve Irwin Way intersection at Glass House Mountains would bring a resolution to one of the most dangerous intersections remaining in the Glasshouse Country region. Local state Member Andrew Powell knows only too well how important traffic signals would be for the Glass House community at the Reed Street and Steve Irwin Way intersection. “I have been pushing for this intersection to be upgraded for the last four years so to learn that the Department of Transport and Main Roads are seriously investigating the feasibility of traffic signals is fantastic news,” he said. Meanwhile, the Landsborough traffic light installation project at the intersection of Steve Irwin Way and Railway Street appears to be progressing. Although the signals are yet to be erected, the underground civil works has been completed with evening and night works being used to minimise the traffic disruptions. GCNews will keep you updated with any new developments on both these projects as they come to hand.

Mal Brough wins Fisher At the time of going to print (12.00noon Monday), the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) results show that Mal Brough (Liberal National Party) has an unassailable first preference lead over Bill Gissane (Australian Labor Party) and Bill Schoch (Palmer United Party) of 44.88% to 21.18% to 18.07% respectively.
Unfortunately at the time of printing, the AEC had yet to release the two-party preferred results. However, according to the ABC election guide, they predict Mal Brough will receive enough preferences to comfortably take the seat. Full results can be seen on the AEC website - http://vtr.aec.gov.au/ HouseDivisionFirstPrefs-17496-161.htm

Throughout September, Unitywater’s licensed contractors will be replacing meters in Landsborough, Mooloolah Valley, Battery Hill, Beerwah, Glass House Mountains, Beerburrum, Cooroy and Tewantin. This work is part of Unitywater’s annual infrastructure maintenance program and is done at no additional cost to customers.

How to read the new fire danger rating sign In last week’s GCNews, Steve Rook, 3rd Officer from the Glass House Mountains Rural Fire Brigade warned us that the fire season is with us and that we all need to be prepared. One recent advancement has been the installation of a fire warning sign on both sides of Steve Irwin Way, just opposite the soccer fields at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club. Glass House Volunteer Community Educator (VCE) Gavin Stewart explained that the signs are designed as an indicator of potential fire danger at a given period of time. “Normally the fire danger is assessed by using a four day weather forecast, and so the danger rating shown on the sign relates to what it is expected to be because of those conditions. “However, with severe weather conditions, the rating can change rapidly, and so during high fire danger weather, residents should keep an eye on the sign as well as listening to local radio for updates,” he said. The sign has six categories – low-moderate, high, very high, severe, extreme and catastrophic. The Queensland Rural Fire Service website explains what each category means and what you should do. Low–moderate. Fires can be easily controlled and pose little threat to people or property. What to do – review your bushfire survival plan and monitor the situation for any changes. High. Fires can be controlled but loss of life and damage to property is still a threat. What to do – ensure that you, your family and property are prepared for the risk of bushfire. Monitor the situation for any changes. Very high. Fires can be difficult to control with flames that may burn into treetops. Loss of life and damage to property is still a threat. What to do – staying and defending your property is an option if your home is wellprepared, and you are capable of actively defending it. Severe. Fires may be uncontrollable and fast-moving with flames that may be higher than rooftops. What to do – leaving early will always be the safest option. Staying and defending your property is only an option if your home is well-prepared, and you are capable of actively defending it. Extreme. Fires may be uncontrollable, unpredictable and fast-moving with flames in the treetops, and higher than rooftops. What to do – even wellprepared and constructed homes will not be safe. Leaving early (hours before) a fire occurs is the safest option for you and your family. Catastrophic. Fires are likely to be uncontrollable, unpredictable and very fast-moving with highly aggressive flames extending high above treetops and buildings. What to do – even well-prepared and constructed homes will not be safe. If catastrophic fires are expected in your area, evacuate yourself and your family to safety as soon as possible. According to Steve Rook, the local VCE’s are trained in providing advice on bushfire preparedness and survival plans. “We are able to come to your home or community group to discuss your needs and assist in developing your survival plan,” he said. Your Glass House VCEs are Steve Rook – 0407 572 930; Gavin Stewart – 0437 931 657; and Kirsty Levis - 0418 980 019. Community News Thumbs up to the Landsborough Pub On Sunday, August 25, Landsborough Hotel was abuzz with excitement as they hosted their Inaugural Family Friendly Pig Races. The athletes sported coloured sequin jackets and a curly tail. Adults and kids waited with anticipation for each race to get underway, hoping that their favourite pig would win.
At the starting line for race number 4 ........... The Bacon Blitz
Watching little piglets race around the track, through obstacles and eventually making it to the finish line provided lots of laughs. Everyone who attended had a rip-snorter of a time! The day was such a success that the Hotel are hoping to make it an annual family event. The Landsborough Hotel is well known for their continuous support within local community. These recent Pig Races was just another example of the Hotel's generosity as they kindly donated the proceeds from the pig races to five local organisations. Landsborough State School P & C, Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade, The Lions Club of Beerwah, Bee Gees United Soccer Club and Hinterland Lions AFL Club all benefited from the Pig Race Day. More than $3,500.00 in raffles from the day was distributed amongst these local groups. All of these organisations wish to say a huge thank you to the amazing team at the Landsborough Hotel for their ongoing support - it really is appreciated!
Contributed by Val Machin Glasshouse Mountains Probians are all retired locals who meet for fun, fellowship and friendship on the second Wednesday of the month at 10.00am at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club. We are an active group of Probians who have monthly outings to various and interesting places. Last month on a beautiful sunny morning 24 of our members went by coach to Brisbane and enjoyed a friendly guided tour around Government House. A history of the house and its past owners were given, together with information about the duties and responsibilities of the Governor. Coffee and canapés were served in the room used for investitures, followed by a brief introduction which preceded the tour. The photo was taken on this day. A lunch at Broncos Leagues Club followed, before heading home. For anyone wishing to join, and enjoy outings like this one, please contact our membership co-ordinator, Val Machin on 5494 1406.

Contributed by B. Smith (Secretary) There are a few vacant time slots for hiring the hall - groups can inquire by phoning 5494 7212. Next meeting is Thursday, September 12 at 4.00pm in the Hall. New members are always welcome - meeting times can be adjusted to suit anyone interested in joining our team of volunteers. Spring cleaning needs doing, so if you are interested and can spare the time to do some
weeding and general tidying of the grounds, please contact 5494 7793. It would be great to have the Hall spick 'n span for the 150 year celebration in October. The Hall Committee are actively involved with the Reunion Morning Tea and would welcome any helpers on that day. For any information regarding the Hall phone either 5494 7793 or 5494 7999.

By Lea Parkes Even if you haven’t been to the Ekka or a ‘Country Show’ for a while, most of us have memories of what we enjoyed most. For some, it was winning prizes on the amusements in sideshow alley, seeing all the farm animals, the fruit and vegetable pavilion, the creative displays or the strawberry ice-creams. Recently residents at Embracia in Glasshouse Country were able to relive some of those great memories without even leaving home. With last week deemed ‘Ekka Week’, through the hard work of the staff, volunteers and residents each of their communities recreated some of those experiences through a number of Pavilions, including Orchids and Art, Transport Models, Dolls and Bears, Fruit and Vegies and Floral Art. They also created a sideshow alley, an Ekka Cafe, they had demonstrations and special visits from Farm Animals, Classic Cars, as well as creating scarecrows in the gardens. I was given a guided tour of the Plant and Art Pavilion by resident Arthur Westwood who has been an avid orchid grower for the past 30 years. Since moving into Embracia he has been able to continue this love. While the EKKA week was all about enhancing the experience of the residents – it was fairly obvious to me that the staff and volunteers as well as the visitors on the day – were really enjoying it as well. I have to say I got caught up in the atmosphere looking at the beautiful craft and paintings reminded me of spending time with my nannas. The only thing that I was disappointed about was that I didn’t have my purse with me so missed out on my favourite Ekka treat – strawberries and cream. GMAN honours long term members
Contributed by Gwen Malcolm The AGM of Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network (GMAN) was held on Sunday, September 1 at the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre. In spite of the date clash with Father’s Day, a good roll up of members ensured a successful afternoon. Members and guests were offered a Wattle Day badge in recognition of the National celebration of our floral symbol of green and gold. With only two of the existing committee agreeing to nominate, it was wonderful to welcome an almost entirely new and younger group of people to fill the positions. Following the election of the new committee, chaired by Nigel Cope, members were treated to an informative and inspiring presentation by both Nigel and his wife Cathy who are volunteer rehabilitators working for Wildcare Australia. During the afternoon, long term members Art van Wensveen and Phyl Medlen, who are still contributing in their senior years, were awarded framed certificates of life membership. Life membership has only been awarded once before and that was to pioneer of the area, Jack Ferris, in his 95th year!
Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade Contributed by Helen Jakeman, Secretary Our brigade recently held our Annual General Meeting. The only change to our Officers and Committee was that our Treasurer Heather Carney resigned her position and Linda Young was elected as our new Treasurer. We would like to thank Heather for her dedication to the position of Treasurer over the last eight years and we welcome Linda for once again holding a committee position in our brigade. As some of you may remember Linda was our inaugural secretary 22 years ago and has continued to be an active member of our brigade. Thanks Linda for your continued support of our brigade. The Officers and Committee are as follows: First Officer - Craig Young Second Officer - Julia Meaker Third Officer - Trevor Jakeman Fourth Officer - Kev Sedgman Fifth Officer - Andrew Brooks
Sixth Officer - Paul Addison Chairman: Paul Fishburn, Secretary: Helen Jakeman, Treasurer: Linda Young If you need to contact anyone from the Brigade please phone Craig Young (1st Officer) on 0408 713 609 or Helen Jakeman (Secretary) 5494 1031. Normally by this time of the year we have almost finished our hazard reduction burns, however with all the winter rain around it has been too wet to get started. We are now conducting some hazard reduction burns. If you feel that you need help with a burn, please contact Craig Young on 0408 713 609. However, don’t take too long to make this contact as we don’t have a very large window of opportunity to complete these burns safely. As always please remember if you are burning any area greater than two square metres you will need to get a fire permit from your local fire warden. (Trevor Jakeman 0427 400 130 is the local fire warden for the Landsborough Area).
Learn more about the ‘Dark Side of Technology’ Church on the Rise is giving locals the opportunity to learn more about ‘The Dark Side of Technology’, with two free seminars they’re hosting on September 16 and 17. The seminars will be presented by Brad Huddleston an author and international speaker with a degree in Computer Science. In Brad’s book ‘The Dark Side of Technology: Restoring Balance in the Digital Age’ he presents what he says is the truth about technology, teaching you how it works, why it works, and how to apply wisdom to keep your family in the Light. “This is an honest, straightforward approach that gives you the tools you need today to use technology, so it doesn't use you,” Brad said.
“Ultimately, the problem is not technology. The problem is darkness. Computers and phones do not cyber bully, consume pornography, send 500 text messages a day or commit online adultery. People do. And people who don't understand the risks are falling every day,” he said. There will be a family friendly seminar for the whole family, on Monday, September 16 from 7.00pm and then on Tuesday, September 17 there will be a session run only for men 17 years and over from 7.00pm. Church on the Rise is located at 68 Peachester Road, Beerwah.

Windows 8 Skype frustrations
There’s an app for that!
When a new operating system (ie Windows 8 or Mac Mountain Lion) comes along there are usually new things to learn and adapt to. And one would be forgiven for thinking that gradually things would get easier and easier.
The latest craze most certainly is 'apps' - these being programs which run on mobile devices such as tablets and smart phones. There’s an app for just about everything, from note taking to star gazing, and the great news is that many of them are 100% free!
I’m afraid to say though that in the case of Windows 8, for certain aspects things are bordering on the ridiculous. A prime example of this is the Skype App. People have been downloading and using Skype for 10 years now, and for many people with relatives overseas (myself included) it is our ‘go to’ communication tool for talking and seeing people live over the internet. Well, if you go to download Skype with Windows 8, you’ll be guided to the Windows 8 Store. If you don’t have a Microsoft Account you can’t use the store, so you have to set one up. If you have a Bigpond email account, you can’t use this to set up your Microsoft account so you have to create a new one (Gmail, Yahoo etc.). Once you have setup your new email account, you can then create your Microsoft Account. Once you have setup your Microsoft Account you can then access the store and download the Skype App. Having done all of this, on a Laptop or Desktop PC, you will be confronted with a screen to which you cannot add contacts or pretty much do anything! Progress? I think madness! There is a Desktop version of the new Skype which you can download for your Windows 8, but if you are guided by your PC then this option is not obvious. There are, as it turns out, ways of using the Skype App (find a link on our website), however it is not intuitive at all, especially when considering the Skype program has been around for a decade now…… Go figure!
Modern business owners are developing apps for a number of reasons – to be part of something modern, popular and cutting edge; to gain exposure to millions of potential clients; and more often than not to monetise the app that is, to make a small amount of money per sale or upgrade of the app, on the premise that a cheap item can still generate a huge profit when sold thousands or millions of times over. Once you’ve decided to proceed with the development of an app, there are a few different pathways down which you can proceed: 1. A free app development tool - there are numerous ones out there. These tools will allow you to create very basic apps with small amounts of text and usually a link or two. These most often also feature advertising banners which can be distracting to your users, but which keep the system free for you. 2. Have a professional team develop an app for IOS (iPhone), Android, Windows Phone and/ or Bada. This method can produce stunning results but the costs can be high, depending upon your requirements. 3. Have a 'web app' built - this is essentially a web page which is built to look and function like a small app. The cost involved is far less than for actual app development and the functionality will work on all smart phones, regardless of their operating system.
Got a great idea for a website, mobile app or
Reflecting on the past year is almost like a trip on a high speed rail service, you have arrived at your destination. I looked at the goals set a year earlier and thought ‘Are we there yet’ to answer ‘NO’. The next question is ‘Why not?’ The chamber has addressed the needs of small businesses in many ways and what needs to change to create the opportunity for new business owners to set up in Glasshouse Country Communities, only to find the need continues to change. The chamber prepared a submission to the draft planning scheme in December, and because of the Noosa move the process has been delayed. A submission was prepared for the Economic Development Strategy (EDS) in May. Both of these documents have significant bearing on the way the community can continue to grow and what the future for business will look like. We will continue to mark time until January 2014 before the changes can be implemented. Recent months has seen the vacancy in commercial property attract new tenants. A sense of vibrancy has now become evident within the community; the chamber is working to maintain the enthusiasm. The chamber hosted a very successful information evening for business owners to obtain first hand information on the EDS, attracting over 70 business operators. This was the stimulus for more discussion on the Place + Beerwah project and attracting new business to join the chamber. The next step is for each of the five business centers to have a sub-committee to address the local business needs of the community. The chamber is promoting a Buy Local Campaign which will be rolled out over the next two months, encouraging shoppers to support your local traders before leaving your community to shop. The next Chamber meeting on September 18 and will have Mick Hefferan, Pro Vice- Chancellor (Engagement) University of the Sunshine Coast as our speaker who will address members on the state and future of the local and regional economy. All Glasshouse Country small business operators are invited to attend as per the meeting notice below.

Contributed by Tania Matthews A group of the Sunshine Coast Region’s most talented young senior visual arts students recently had a chance to exhibit their best work at the University of the Sunshine Coast Art Gallery. Year 12 student Sheree Thornton and Year 11 student Lauren Davidson represented Beerwah High School at this prestigious event. Congratulations to Sheree who exhibited a charcoal and pastel triptych of figurative ballerinas, winning a Commendation Award and Lauren who showed a mixed media symbolic self-portrait. The Creative Generation Excellence Awards in Visual Art recognises and promotes excellence in senior visual arts education throughout Queensland’s state and non-state schools. This program is held in conjunction with the Queensland Department of Education, Training and Employment (DETE) has been conducted annually since 1990, and helps raise community awareness about the degree of sophistication in concepts, diversity of technical competence, and the high standard of arts education in Queensland secondary schools. The exhibition provides a wonderful opportunity for the Lauren Davidson community to see the very best of school student art, as well as an opportunity for the students to see their work presented in a public art gallery in the University environment. The exhibition is open until Saturday, September 14 and everyone is welcome and entry is free. Gallery hours are Monday – Saturday 10.00am to 4.00pm. Closed Sundays Sheree Thornton and Public Holidays.
Contributed By Tara Cooper Award-winning children’s authors Peter Carnavas, Belinda Jeffrey and Christine Bongers kicked off this year’s ‘Book Week’ celebrations by inspiring young book worms and budding writers at Pacific Lutheran College. Students in Prep to Year 12 gathered to hear the authors reveal what it was like to be a writer, where they got their story ideas from and how students could have their work published. But it was Peter Carnavas, author of ‘Jessica’s Box’ and ‘Last Tree in the City’, who won the students’ hearts and captured imaginations, according to teacher-librarian Narelle Keen. “He connected really well with students and had a great sense of humour,’’ she said. At Pacific, Melbourne-based theatre group Echelon set the scene, alongside a costume parade, sculpture competition, bottle rocket making activity and much more. “Book week was a great week for students to recognise the value of reading,” Narelle said.

Kids share knowledge
Contributed by Katrina De Clara Students from Beerburrum State School recently took part in the two-day ‘Sunshine Coast Kids in Action Conference’ as part of the ‘Target Kids teaching Kids’ week. Ten of our students from Years 4 – 7 joined with over 300 students from across our region. The students attended some inspiring presentations and workshops presented by other ‘Kids’ around the topics of sustainability, recycling, heritage of local areas, gardening and animal conservation. Beerburrum students prepared a display to share their knowledge on the ‘Value of Backyard Chickens’, including such things as the benefits of having chooks, the types of breeds available and how to care for them. Our ‘Eggy’ tea light candles where a big hit! The second day saw students participating in activities at the Maleny Community Precinct located in the Mary River catchment area. Students took part in tree planting, water quality testing and learning about its ecology. Students also spent time with local Indigenous members from the Sunshine Coast region. They heard stories about the local land and the important relationship the Indigenous community have with the country and how to care for it. Our students were delighted to attend such an inspirational conference, meet lots of new people and most importantly take away some valuable information to share with others in the community. Mark McArdle
State member for Caloundra P: 5491 2780
Great to be back This week I returned to my regular duties as the Member for Caloundra, after taking time off to deal with my challenge of prostate cancer. It is good to be back and I am looking forward to continuing to serve the Caloundra electorate. I would like to thank everyone who sent their touching emails, cards and messages of support during this period and my staff who continued with the day-to-day operations of the electorate office in my absence.
Update on Lake Baroon and Ewen Maddock Dam review Discussion papers from the most extensive review of recreational use of south east Queensland dams and catchments carried out by Seqwater earlier this year will be publicly made available on September 18. Two of the Coast’s dams, Lake Baroon and Ewen Maddock Dam, were included in the review that looked at masterplans, activities, facilities and management rules and guidelines. Enjoying the great outdoors is a way of life for people on the Coast and visitors to our region. I encourage people to have a look at these discussion papers and have your say on the recreational facilities carried out at these sites. An information session will be held on September 21 and a workshop on October 12. To register visit www.yourseqwater.com.au/projects/LakeBaroon-Ewen-Maddock
Good luck to our senior students Last week many Year 12 students from hinterland high schools took part in the Queensland Core Skills test (QCS), which means they are heading into their final term of study. Good luck to all students (and their parents) as they enter this very stressful time. You are our leaders of tomorrow and I look forward to meeting many of you at the end-of-year graduation ceremonies.

Andrew Powell State member for Glass House P: 5435 2013 Last chance to have your say on the speed review
Locals have until Friday, September 13 to have your say on road safety as part of the landmark government review into speed limits across Queensland. If you think there is a road with too many speed zone changes, or you have a suggestion to make speed limits easier to understand, we really want to hear from you. This is the first state-wide review conducted in Queensland and it’s a great opportunity for local drivers to give the government quality feedback that could help improve roads in our area. Once submissions have been received, Transport and Main Roads will work with local councils to identify the top 100 roads. Submissions can be made online at www.tmr.qld.gov.au/SpeedLimitReview up until midnight Friday, September 13 or posted to Speed Limit Review, PO Box 673, Fortitude Valley Queensland 4006.
Highway footprint reduced
Transport and Main Roads recently provided details to our community on the plans for the future upgrade of the Bruce Highway between Caloundra Road and the Sunshine Motorway which can be viewed online by visiting www.tmr.qld.gov.au/projects. I have still had many constituents email me seeking clarification as to the overall footprint of the project. I am happy to confirm that the footprint has been reduced from 35 hectares down to 24 hectares and will ensure no National Park or environmentally-sensitive land to the immediate north-west of the Caloundra Road interchange will be affected. Future plans do include widening the highway from six to ultimately eight lanes, and would require an additional six hectares of state forest to be cleared from a remaining nine hectares. I am pleased to say the planning study involved extensive environmental investigations to ensure any potential impacts would be minimised and closely managed. When the project moves into the detailed design phase, more targeted environmental investigations will be undertaken and suitable mitigation measures and treatments will be considered.

Many people who visit counsellors are well adjusted individuals, but are simply experiencing difficulty in one particular area, such as family relationships. It isn’t always easy admitting you need help, so when you do reach out to someone, you want someone who is not only highly qualified, but also genuinely caring and compassionate. Christine Perry, of Hinterland Counsellors offers family and relationship counselling to couples, individuals and children. She assists clients who are facing a variety of life challenges such as relationship difficulties, parenting issues, depression, anxiety, grief, and she specialises in healing from past trauma and childhood abuse. She provides a caring, non-judgemental environment in which clients can consider options for a more positive change in themselves and their relationships.
“Counselling can provide an opportunity for people to tell their stories, discover and access resources, and find renewed hope for a brighter future,” she said. Thanks from Landsborough Rural Firies A great day was held recently at the Landsborough Hotel when they held a family fun day including Pig Races. Not only did this prove to be a great day for the family, it was also a successful fundraising day for five local community groups and Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade was lucky enough to be one of these groups. We would like to thank Terry Morrow and all his team at the Landsborough Hotel for hosting this event and raising much-needed funds, not only for our brigade but for the other community groups involved. Our brigade would like to wish the Vanohr brothers all the best for their future after they recently sold their business in Beerwah. Bob and Darryl serviced and repaired our Fire Trucks regularly and we would like to thank them for always being prepared to help us out at any time. Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade
Racist and sexist I have to say I am a little tired of reading your 'just for laughs' joke section in your newspaper, especially when every other week the theme relates to the Irish. How you printed and circulated last week's entry is beyond me. I therefore have a question for you and a suggestion for the contributor. Would you have printed this joke if the central theme contained the words Aboriginal, Muslim, Gay, Lesbian, Hindu, or Asian? I doubt it very much, because if you had, you could close the door on your operation after you explained your indifference to racism and sexism in an Australian court of law. Trail bikers in Photographic Competition It was disappointing to see the winning photo for the Lions Club Photographic competition depicting two trail bikers in front of the mountain. Perhaps the Lions Club people should see for themselves the appalling damage done to our protected local National Park areas by trail bikes and the resulting erosion to tracks and destruction of our beautiful native flora. Trail bike and four wheel drivers break through the gates and cut fences to get into the forbidden areas when they have plenty of forestry areas they can destroy. Concerned bush walker Beerwah
EKKA Week at Embracia In Glasshouse Country
Contributed by Fred Carr President of Friends of Eden The Friends of Eden Inc are a not-for-profit association volunteering at Embracia raising funds from different activities to purchase equipment to enhance the lifestyle of the residents. During EKKA week at Embracia In Glasshouse Country we held a Lolly Shop over four days to raise funds. We had a lucky draw, also a jar full of lollies as a guessing game, different homemade sweets like rockyroad, peanut brittle, coconut ice, chocolates, coffee, and ginger balls made by some of Embracia’s great staff. Thanks go out to all of you who supplied the treats, to those who operated the shop, and those who supported our efforts. The treat of the week was Strawberry Sundaes, enjoyed by many. Our thanks go to Woolworths, Matilda Fruit Barn and Oaklands Farms for their great support as we had a great result with the shop. Thank you again. www.gcnews.com.au
Slipper’s advertising dribble Eight full pages of advertising dribble by the turncoat ex Liberal member for Fisher in our local content magazine? OMG. Yes we know he is desperate to keep his position, but eight pages of dribble? If GCNews is so desperate for advertising revenue then I suppose you are to be forgiven. But be aware that although I have read, enjoyed and contributed to the GCNews for the last 20+ years, in future the paper will be consigned, unread, to the recycle bin where it will do most good. In disgust, James Aitken Mooloolah Valley
Editor's response
Over the last five weeks, everyone has been bombarded with electoral advertising – on the radio, on billboards and corflute signs, in your letterboxes, on your television screens and throughout newspapers across the Sunshine Coast (and the country) – and clearly it had become a point of frustration for some people. But as part of the accepted democratic process, political advertising during elections is here to stay. It is controlled by tight rules, regulations and standards which must be met by the candidate or party and by the publishing media. I do not think GCNews needs to ask for your ‘forgiveness’ however we do hope that readers would ‘understand’ why we accepted the ‘paid advertising’ by our Federal ex-Member, as well as from any of the other candidates who ran in the elections. The only way any free community newspaper can continue operating is from the advertising revenue it brings in. As a small independently owned newspaper this can be a struggle – and over the recent years with the tightened economic environment and megamedia conglomerate buy-ups, many communities no longer have a local newspaper or they are distributed far more thinly on the ground. So when we had requests for ‘paid advertising’ from any of the candidates, our decision making came back to the same question – what will we be able to do with these extra funds? No, the answer wasn’t go on a around the world cruise – but it will allow us to include seven more pages for stories from our community in the coming weeks, it will mean that our casual staff will get some extra hours this week, and it means that our deliverers get extra because of the larger paper size. The way our newspaper works is that we have a ratio between the amounts of advertising we sell with the amount of free editorial space for the community. The size of the paper is determined by the space booked for advertising – which in turn gives community and not-for-profit groups, schools, churches, sporting clubs, social welfare and charity groups, and essential service organisations the space to have their news, events, results and announcements published every week free of charge. On many occasions we have far more community contributions than paid advertising – so the extra advertising we sell during the election gives us a buffer when we need to pay for the additional printing costs that the advertising doesn’t quite support some weeks. I believe that there was a heightened level of anger with some locals about the advertising undertaken by their ex-Member – because of their personal and political feelings toward him – so it would seem now that the electorate has been able to democratically express that message by how they voted. And if the way electoral advertising is undertaken is a burning issue for some people in our community, it might be something that they lobby the new Federal member to have changed. Finally I would like to thank all our wonderful regular advertisers – for without your support we would not be able to publish this weekly community newspaper and all our local groups would not have this fantastic forum to communicate with the community of Glasshouse Country. Regards,

Environment Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network Freshwater snake or Keelback
Tropidonophis mairii Many of us grew up with the attitude that ‘the only good snake is a dead one’. Sadly this attitude is still true of many people today, with little real knowledge of different snake species. Some years ago I was intrigued to find a snake in my vegetable garden attempting to consume a toad. A photograph was sent off to an expert for identification which came back as a Freshwater Snake or Keelback. Apparently this species is the only one that can eat cane toads though usually only small ones without being affected by the toxins. The Keelback is not a venomous snake but can be confused with the Rough-scaled snake whose venom is toxic. Keelbacks are relatively small, growing to 75 centimetres, are olive brown in colour with irregular dark cross bands. The body scales are ridged and the underbelly is cream. These snakes have been erroneously referred to as ‘Swamp Tigers’, as inaccurate a statement as that referring to a tree snake with a yellow belly, as a venomous ‘Yellow Bellied Black snake’. The Freshwater snake is found in a wide range of habitats from streams and swamps to eucalypt forests and urban gardens. They lay five to 12 eggs and are active both day and night. While they do eat toads they also eat frogs, lizards and even tadpoles and small fish. While it is important to treat all snakes with respect, not all of them are harmful. Remember they are also Australian native wildlife and it is illegal to kill any native animals.
Do you have an hour or two a month to spare? Would you like to learn more about the flora and fauna in your area, and meet new friends? For more information on GMAN activities and nursery sales please call Cliff (5438 7118) or Gwen (5493 0029). www.gman-inc.com.au
New homes for local wildlife
The Mackillop Learning and Development Centre operates from Monday – Thursday at the Mackillop Centre, on Peachester Road, Beerwah providing activities for approximately 22 people with disabilities in our community. The program has a strong focus on having their members participate in activities within the community, including volunteer work at Parrots in Paradise, and helping out with the Prep Students at Beerwah State School. Some of the girls attend the Baptist Church Busy Fingers Craft Group and on Tuesdays, and some of the fellas in the group go to the Nambour Menshed where they have begun learning wood working skills. They recently finished the first project, two ‘Wildlife Boxes’ to be placed in trees for homes for possums or other native animals. When the boxes were complete the group decided they would like to give them to the Coochin Creek Bushcare group for them to install in their area they look after at the back of Woodgate Estate in Beerwah. The fellas are looking forward to more Mens Shed visits and are already planning their next project, making a tool box. Now the group are in need of someone with woodworking skills to accompany the fellas to Nambour. Group co-ordinator Kelly Smith said unfortunately the gentlemen who volunteered his time to go with the group to Nambour and assist them with their skills is no longer able to continue in the role. We are now desperately seeking someone else who may have one day a week from approximately 9.00am – 2.00pm on Mondays to help out, she said. If you or someone you know would be interested in finding out a little more about what’s required Kelly can be contacted on 0407 226 937. At the presentation, group member Nathan on behalf of the group, thanked their leader Kay Uziel for providing them with the support to make the project possible.

Sunshine Coast Airport receives global recognition for carbon reduction Sunshine Coast Airport has become the third major airport in Australia – and the first in Queensland – to be internationally recognised for mapping its carbon footprint and committing to reduce its carbon emissions. Our airport now ranks alongside the likes of London City Airport, Singapore Changi Airport, Abu Dhabi International Airport, Barcelona-El Prat Airport and Vienna Airport in being certified at the mapping level. “The Sunshine Coast Council’s vision is to be Australia’s most sustainable region, and the airport is certainly doing its bit. Clearly it has done a wonderful job and continues to punch above its weight for innovation in airport management,” council’s Economic Development / Aviation portfolio councillor Stephen Robinson said. “We warmly welcome this recognition of our efforts on the world stage.” Sunshine Coast Airport General Manager Peter Pallot said the Airport Carbon Accreditation Program was the only independent institutionally endorsed carbon standard for airports that recognises the efforts of airports to manage and reduce their CO2 emissions. “The program is progressively being implemented across the world’s airports and the early accreditation of Sunshine Coast Airport is an important step in our journey towards carbon neutrality,” he said. Recently one of the airport’s major building projects – the conversion of a former air freight warehouse to office accommodation – was awarded a prestigious Glossie Living Smart Award for excellence in sustainable building and design for the unique recycling of an existing building. Sunshine Coast Airport is the current Australian Airports Association ‘Major Airport of the Year’, an award it has held for the past two years running. “As the front door to Australia’s most sustainable region, the airport’s 20

investment in monitoring and reducing our carbon footprint is our ongoing commitment to our community,” Mr Pallot said. “This is the first level of accreditation and we have more work to do – but we are well on the way. “Initiatives already implemented include the use of recycled materials and recycling of materials and waste in construction, water harvesting and water reduction measures, use of low-energy lighting and solar tubes and reduction in cooling energy through smart building technology. “Next on our list is the recycling of food waste with a worm farm, replacement of our air-conditioning system, further reductions in the buildings heat loads and investigations into solar energy generation.” Initiated by ACI Europe in 2009, Airport Carbon Accreditation was extended to Asia-Pacific in November 2011 by ACI Asia-Pacific. ACI has appointed WSP Environment & Energy, an international consultancy company to independently administer and enforce the accreditation criteria for airports. In June 2013, the program was extended to the African region of ACI. To date, there are 89 airports accredited with Airport Carbon Accreditation, across four continents. Regional Director of ACI Asia-Pacific, Patti Chau, congratulated Sunshine Coast Airport in being accredited at Mapping Level under Airport Carbon Accreditation. “This is a demonstration of the airport’s willingness to go the extra mile and its commitment in operating the airport in an environmentally sustainable manner which is crucial for the long-term development of our industry,” she said. www.gcnews.com.au

Grow any herbs now – except for basil (it’s a little too early) and coriander (it’s too late). Grevilleas will be flowering away. Cutting flowers for inside the house will promote new growth and better plant health. Pruning of edible fig trees can be carried out. Be very vigorous – one-third can be cut off. Figs are only produced on new wood of the new season’s growth. Give them a good feed of general fertiliser. It could be a few months before we get good soaking rains and the drying September winds will suck the moisture from bare soil, so mulch your gardens to keep in the available water. Dig up and divide canna lilies. Water them in well with a seaweed solution.

Maleny Botanic Gardens – an unforgettable experience You know you’re onto a good thing when local gardening guru Graham Ellis describes the Maleny Botanic Gardens as “The most exquisite gardens I’ve seen in my 41 years in the garden business. It will be the next wonder of the world!” Maleny Botanic Gardens is utterly spectacular – there’s no other way to put it. The eight acres of landscaped gardens, set on a picturesque 110 acre ex-cattle grazing property, are grandiose in every sense. Surrounded by luscious rainforest and overlooking the Glass House Mountains, the Maleny Botanic Gardens is a truly delightful experience. Owner, creator and gardening fanatic Frank Shipp started transforming the property in 2007 and over the years since has created a panorama
of ponds, walking trails, waterfalls, expansive gardens, beautifully manicured lawns, lookouts, gazebos and sculptures. The gardens showcase a diversity of natives and exotics, as well as plants imported from South Africa’s similar hinterland environment.
The four kilometres of trails meander past thousands of different plants, ranging from roses, azaleas, orchids, ferns, stag and elk horns and a collection of rare South African cycads. A variety of annuals and perennials provide a spectacular and colourful display all year round. Irises in many colours surround the many ponds and lakes. The Gardens were donated a large collection of stunning orchids at the end of 2012, all of which have been attached to trees and provide a spectacular display when in flower.
The gardens cater for groups and special events, such as birthdays, weddings, wedding photography, receptions and corporate functions. Picnic tables are available for visitors to linger in the gardens, to enjoy devonshire tea and other refreshments which are available for purchase, or bring their own picnic lunch. Taking the scenic drive past Mary Cairncross Reserve, Maleny Botanic Gardens is handily located at the corner of Mountain View Road and Stanley River Road, and is open from 9.00am to 4.30pm seven days a week, except on Christmas Day. Admission is only $11.00 with accompanied under-16’s free.

Time to celebrate
The team at Landsborough Pool Supplies and Services would like to share their news – they are now in their 10th year! The family run business, which has been operating since August 2004, strive to offer locals the best service possible. This has been helped recently with the addition of another work vehicle out on the road – you’ve probably seen one if not both of the utes out and about in the local area. They cover from Beerburrum out to Conondale, and up to Buderim, so the extra vehicle really helps to keep waiting time to a minimum. Dad Ron, daughter Ally and mum Jan are the part of the team ‘out on the road’. Ron and Ally have extensive hands-on experience, and strive to solve any pool problems you have. When they bought the business they had a basic knowledge of pools and servicing, but over the years as the business has grown so has their understanding of everything aqua.
Business feature “People bring in a broken piece of a filter or pump, and we can identify the brand and source the replacement required,” says Ally (known locally as the Pool Guru). In the shop, you will see the familiar faces of Ron, Jan, Ally and Deanne. You can bring in your water samples for free testing and advice. The message from the team is please think about your pool health now! With spring here and the school holidays only 10 days away, contact us now for servicing and advice, think ahead for the holidays, and even for Christmas. Don't leave it til the last minute. So come in or call the family team for honest, competitive and reliable service, and straight talking advice. Support these hinterland locals (living locally for 24 years), who will always try to go that extra mile for their customers.

Peachester Gardening Group Contributed by Patricia Bradford Glenis Bruin, Ambassador for the Garden Clubs of Australia, was a welcome visitor and guest speaker at our last meeting. She spoke about her recent trip to the Lenah Valley in Tasmania as they were celebrating their 50th Birthday. John and Pam Innes visited the Japanese Gardens at Cowra recently. The video shown of the gardens was enthralling and scenes of the museum and art gallery were very interesting. John also gave a short history of the building of the gardens. Recently we’ve received many compliments on how enjoyable our Friendship Day was. Results of the competition bench for July are: 1st Coral Buetel, 2nd Cath Howitt. Our next meeting is on Thursday, September 19 in the Peachester Hall at 9.00am. There will be the normal competition bench and a short meeting as we will be visiting the Maleny Botanic Gardens. A small charge will apply for entry. Please bring along lunch and a hat. Visitors are welcome to join us for a great outing. For more information phone 5496 9169 Patricia Bradford (Publicity Officer). President Jeff Bodley with Glenis Bruin, guest speaker

Spring is the month for wildflowers in SE QLD and one of our most beautiful displays is that of our Leptospermums or Tea Trees. This time of year Leptospermum ‘Cardwell’ are exploding with masses of white five petalled flowers, continuing right throughout Spring. Leptospermum ‘Cardwell’ is a selection from a subspecies that grows around Cardwell in NQ. It is much bushier and does not grow as sparse or tall as our local form. It grows approx 2m x 1.5m. In a garden situation it is highly ornamental with weeping foliage and will attract many species of insects when flowering. These in turn will attract many species of insectivorous birds. Many small birds will also fine refuge inside Cardwell’s dense foliage. If you would like more information on this tree or any other native plants drop in and see Simon or Melissa at Go Green Rainforest Nursery, 2620 Steve Irwin Way, Glenview. Phone 5494 5980. New product knocks out weeds
A relatively new product – from the Earthlife company – called WeedLess has the potential to save a lot of time and money in the garden. It is a 100% natural ready-to-use spray which prevents seeds from germinating. It is made from a fermentation of enzymes and organic acids, is safe for kids and pets and won’t harm living plants. You just mix it with water, apply it anywhere in the garden where weeds grow from surface soil seeds, and Weedless will leave your garden and lawn weed free for up to six weeks. It breaks down the sensitive layer around the seed, so it doesn’t control weeds that have already germinated or are growing. But it will help reduce the next generation of weeds which are waiting to germinate. If you think WeedLess would be helpful to you – talk to your local produce supplier and see if they can buy some in for you.

SEPTEMBER 11 2013
Spring is in the air and this year, it has been for a while before its actual calendar date. My first thought that comes with the warmer weather is barbecue lunches and dinners. With this in mind, I envisage crisp fresh salads and grilled vegetables to go with my char-grilled meat. Finally, crispy fresh watermelon and sweet rockmelon for desert. Okay, yes it is approaching lunchtime on a Saturday while I write this and I’m hungry! However, growing up, salads for me where a basic affair of cucumber, tomato, carrot and lettuce … oh, and tinned beetroot! Now knowing homegrown and pickled beetroot, the tinned variety is almost offensive. On the other hand, if all goes to plan, my home-grown garden salads during late spring should be vibrant and super nutritious bounties this year. Red, yellow and pink cherry tomatoes, frilly green and purple lettuce, crispy apple cucumber, crunchy rocket, carrot sticks, radiant radish, juicy corn and bright capsicum. Now to stop talking food and start getting the soil prepared and the seeds planted as outlined in the table. The other edible plant that I am keenly putting in is Chinese water chestnuts. These are sedge-like plants, that when grown in containers, look beautiful all summer and then they die off in late Autumn providing an abundance of delicious chestnuts. To grow Chinese water chestnuts, I just fill a watertight container three quarters full with some rich, composted soil. It is recommended that two corms be planted per square metre, however I just place one corm in some small decorative pots that I already have, and I still manage to get a heap of good sized corms at harvest. The corm is placed about 10cm into compost and then water is added to the container until there is about 10cm of water above the surface of the compost. Throughout the growing time, this water-level needs to be maintained. Normally, I am always raving about these wonderful little bounties at harvest time, but hopefully this time, because it is at planting time, everyone might get a chance to grow these wonderful treats. Looking forward to a wonderful season in the garden! Until next month in ‘Get Up and Grow’. Vegetable

Finding the right home loan for you: Fixed versus variable rate Regardless of whether you’re looking into your first home loan or your fourth, the type of home loan you choose will have a bearing on your mortgage and repayment experience. After all, there is no one perfect home loan for any given scenario. Depending on the type of investment you’re making, the value of the home, your own personal financial situation and the current market trends, there are any number of different loan types available. Each has its own pros and cons, www.gcnews.com.au
so speaking with a financial expert will be your best course of action for finding the most suitable mortgage option for you. However, two of the most common home loan types that you’ll be likely to come across are a fixed term loan and a variable rate loan. The main difference between the two loan types is simply how the interest rate affects the repayment schedule. A fixed rate home loan has a set interest rate that you make with your payments for a set period of
time, which is usually between three and five years. Regardless of market activity, you will be secure with this rate for the duration of this set period. Variable rate home loans, however, have an unsecured interest rate. While this means that the amount of interest you pay on your home loan can be at the whim of changing market, it’s also possible that you could end up paying less interest. Naturally, there are a number of benefits for both. That’s why it
would be a good idea to contact a financial expert and discuss your personal situation, in order to figure out what home loan type suits your circumstances.

Life to the Full
One of my favourite parts of what I do as a Chaplain is hearing people’s stories. I have always been fascinated by seeing how people live their lives. Life itself is an absolute miracle. The fact that we exist and can breathe, eat, sleep, laugh, work and love is a really incredible thing. I think we can easily forgot this fact when we are busy doing what we do. When I hear people’s stories, they are all different. Some have lots of hardship and trials, others plenty of good memories and others a mix of both. But amongst the myriad of unique

life experiences, there seems to be two major differences. The first are those who live to the best of their abilities (despite their weaknesses) and aim to overcome the obstacles that life throws at them. These guys are fighters and overcomers and usually have a good sense of humour. The second are those who let life’s challenges define them and stop them from truly living and being who they are created to be. When we as people do this, it is sad to see us not reach our full potential and those around also miss out on the great things we could be achieving together. That’s disappointing for everyone. But there is HOPE. I believe God want us all to reach our full potential and He is able to help us all do that each day through Him. Check out the verse John 10:10 which says – ‘…I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.’ So be all you can be, it is worth living Life to the Full.

The journey started in 2007 in Adelaide, and after 40 years in our professions. Glenn was a Maintenance Manager in manufacturing with a trade, and Mary a HR / Industrial Relations Officer. On the spur of a moment we sold the house, bought a motorhome and headed off into the sunset. We spent eight months smelling the roses around Australia, and finally settled in Brisbane before moving to Maleny and heading off again for work. We found work in resorts and caravan parks, and four years later after having held around 10 jobs in housekeeping / cleaning around Australia, we knew

Local students achieve black belt Contributed by Cameron Taylor Last weekend over 20 students from San Taekwondo Beerwah and Maleny took part in promotional tests to advance in rank. The standard of the grading was very high and many of the students made it to their next belt. Students as young as four-yearsold took part in the grading in front of a large crowd - something that can be very daunting, especially for new students. Although not all students passed, they all showed great courage to get up and have a go. Included in the group were Leo McDonald and Corin Seric who were awarded their black belt and Jessie Mumford who achieved the rank of first Dan Black belt. Corin, Leo and Jessie have a combined total of about 14 years training behind them and they performed their grading in front of third, fourth and fifth Dan instructors. They were required to demonstrate several patterns, kicking drills, defend themselves against unarmed and armed attackers as well as participate in full contact sparing and break timber throughout the course of the four hour grading designed to test them both physically and mentally. Leo said “after failing my grading at the last

Samantha finishes 4th at National Cross Country Titles
Samantha Grigor, a Year 11 student at Maleny State High School, was overjoyed when announced in the Queensland Cross Country team to travel to Tasmania for the National Titles at the end of last month. Miss Grigor’s excitement only continued after competing in the 3km event in Launceston, Tasmania where she placed 4th overall in Australia within her category. The Queensland team spent four days in Launceston, which included a trip to the Art Museum amongst the activities pertaining to the competition. “I was very nervous before flying to Tasmania, however once settled in it was a great weekend meeting new people,” said Miss Grigor. Miss Grigor is now back and training, raring up for the State Athletic Titles in October where she will be competing in the long distance events.
attempt, I am very happy to finally get my black belt, It has been a personal goal for a number of years and I look forward to continuing my training.” San Taekwondo students now turn their attention to preparing for the national titles to be held in Brisbane in September. San Taekwondo develops students both physically and mentally though the clubs key values of Modesty, Respect, Self-Control, Perseverance and having an Indomitable Spirit. Beerwah Ladies Golf Club
Contributed by Jenny Kelly We are into September now, with only one more chance to win a Monthly Medal and be in the running to win the Medal of Medalists competition for 2013. We had some outstanding scores for this month's Medal, which saw 72 players come out to compete in the Single Stroke event. As always, our Medals are sponsored by our Club Professional John Mellish who is a geat supporter of our Ladies competition. Winner of Division 1, with a great score of 72 Nett was Cathy Stone, who won on a count back from Brenda Jones, who was runner up on 72 Nett. The winner of the Gross in Division 1 was Andrea Campbell who shot an 83 off the stick. Division 2 winner was Di Flint, who played very well for a 68 Nett. Lyn Nichols was runner up with a 70 Nett, and the Gross went to Noelene Annakin who scored 95 off the stick. The biggest win of the day was scored by Rose Ballard who shot the lights out to come in with a 63 Nett. Rose was followed by Gail Murphy who shot a 71 Nett and the Gross went to Janelle Balfe who shot 102 off the stick. Nearest to the Pins went to Di on numbers 2 and 5, Rose on the 16th and Mavis Brimelow took out the 18th. The putting went to Cathy Stone with a total of 25 putts for the round, pretty good considering the greens have been recently renovated. The ball rundown went to 74. Contributed by Dean Roberts The Beerwah Bulldogs C Grade team were victorious in their Grand Final on Saturday against Pomona-Cooran winning the game 20-6. The boys asserted their dominance early with some barnstorming runs and gritty defence plus a couple of try saving tackles just before half time that if not made, would have put the Cutters back into the game. The second half was typical grand final footy and at times looked like the Cutters would climb back into the match but the Beerwah boys dug deep and came away with the win. Our Women’s Team played Burleigh Heads at Davies Park in Brisbane on Sunday in the Semi Final to see who progressed through to next week’s Grand Final. The Bulldogs played great footy to lead right up until the final whistle when Burleigh Heads scored a converted try to win the game 16-14. Beerwah team should be very proud of the way they played on the day and could consider themselves a little unlucky not to advance to the decider this weekend. The Bulldogs also have their Under 13’s playing in the Sunshine Coast Junior Rugby League Grand Final at Gympie this Saturday and wish them all the best for the game. Contributed by Club President John Hesse Well, we’re just about to wrap up another fantastic season of soccer for the juniors. It’s been a great season, lots of triumphs, a few laughs, a few tears, and plenty of superb soccer and great sportsmanship along the way. But it’s not over yet. This week-end three junior Beegees teams – the Under 17 Div 2 boys, the Under 15 Div 2 girls, and the Under 13 Div 2 boys, are set to contest grand final victory this Saturday at Maroochydore Football Club. The games will be three nail biters, as the teams go head to head with other Sunshine Coast teams, who are just as keen to take home grand final victory. We’d love to see lots of Beegees supporters along on the day cheering on our boys and girls as they show their fighting spirit on the field! Maroochydore Football Club is at 462 Maroochydore Road, Kuluin. For match details checkout Sunshine Coast Football www. sunshinecoastfootball.com.au Don’t forget, wear your green, bring a water bottle, and a hat – it’s set to be a scorcher, both on and off the field! A word from a BeeGees Sponsor ‘Divine Massage with Nicole’ combines Chinese acupressure with remedial therapies to ensure massages cater for each individual. This can work either way, meaning your search for love is imbued with romantic fantasy; however it’s not good to let someone to have power over you. Stand your ground without conflict if possible. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 With Venus on the last degrees of Libra moving into Scorpio, you will need concentration and discretion to avoid jealousy and mistrust. CANCER June 22 – July 22 Emotional complications can arise, especially concerning someone who is resistant to being flexible or giving in. Probably it is best to give your message and then walk away and do something more enjoyable. Venus begins a month long beneficial blessing to your sign so do have fun. LEO July 23 – August 22 With Venus entering into the sign of Scorpio for several weeks, this will intensify your recent emotional issues as you search for a sense of security.
