Hi Everyone
I
t is an exciting week at Glasshouse Country & Maleny News where this edition marks GC&M News connecting the community for 30 years. In this, the age of technology, it is great to see that we still have such strong support from both readers and advertisers and that we are still the best source of local news and information. And as we looked back over the past 30 years it has been great to see how the local area has transformed. As most of you will know, about six years ago, we started including an electronic version of the paper each week onto our website. Well this year we will be gradually uploading the whole 30 years of the newspaper, which may just come in handy for those trying to track down historic events or reminiscing about local life. Brownie has written up some of the highlights of the first edition which some of you may remember! So thanks for all those that have supported the paper over the years and here’s to capturing many more great stories and marking milestones in our townships. Regards,

Local News Looking back 30 years Here are some snippets of life in Glasshouse Country from our first edition 30 years ago. Welcome to the new newspaper - The editors explained that they started Glasshouse Country News as a sister paper to their Maleny News, clarifying that they … 'have no ambitions to be Murdochs or Packers…' (Editor's note: some things haven’t changed). Councillor’s comment - Landsborough Shire Divisional Councillor Allan Free congratulated the Maleny News on starting up the Glasshouse Country News. Cr Free reported that as a result of the new highway construction, extra traffic was using Roys Road causing it to deteriorate, and Main Roads had provided an extra $20,000 towards making urgent repairs. He also advised Beerburrum residents while Railways were building the raised overpass, the old level crossing near the station would reopen. Pineapple Patch opens - On May 2, 1986 the Pineapple Patch opened its doors, with owners Janet and Steve Johnson inviting people to sample their three course smorgasbord for $12.50. Real estate update - Mike Cronin (Mike Cronin Real Estate) and Laurie Evans (Laurie Evans Real Estate) let us know that first home buyers can purchase a house for a realistic $37,000, with land available from $11,000. They can only see the area progressing once the railway line is electrified.

Vertical rescue looking for new members Without our dedicated SES volunteers, many Queensland communities would struggle before, during and after flood, storm and other emergencies, including rescues from the sides of mountains. Today – May 11 – is Wear Orange Wednesday (WOW Day) – a way to recognise the dedication and hard work of Queensland’s 6,200 SES volunteers. People across the region will be wearing orange to show their support for locals who give up their time to assist during times of misfortune and calamity. Both our local SES Units – Maleny and Glass House Mountains are always looking for new members who want to make a positive contribution back into their community … as well as learn new skills, make new friends and be involved in some exciting and extraordinary events. Events of the last week or so where local SES crews have been involved in two rescues on our Glass House Mountains, have brought into focus the specialist role the Glass House Mountains SES vertical rescue team plays. The latest involved a rescue of local Beerwah Police officer Wes Sutton, who fell from Mt Tibrogargan during a training exercise late last week. This small band of dedicated rescuers have been trained in the particular skills need to safely climb, find, rescue and retrieve people, who have found themselves in dire circumstances on our Glass House Mountains.
One of last week's rescues required helicopter assistance Over time, their numbers have dwindled and they are looking for new local talent who are willing take up the challenge of being part of the vertical rescue team. The team is open to men and women living locally (Maleny to Caloundra to Caboolture) who have an interest in ropes, rock climbing, abseiling and can spare some time each week for training. If you think you might be interested in joining the ranks of the SES elite, contact the SES on 5420 7568 or 0418 708 885. And for those who know Wes Sutton, the Beerwah Police reported to us that …“He is recovering in hospital and both Wes and Beerwah Police appreciate all the well wishes from the community.”

Movement at Bowen Road intersection While works at the intersection of Reed Street, Glass House Mountains seemed to have slowed down, works are now underway on the $2.4 million upgrade further down Steve Irwin Way at the Bowen Road intersection at Glass House Mountains. Main Roads and Road Safety Minister Mark Bailey said the upgrade would deliver safety improvements for motorists and pedestrians through the installation of traffic signals at the intersection. “Safety and efficiency will be improved for the 14,500 vehicles travelling through the intersection daily,” Mr Bailey said. “Signalising this intersection will bring it in line

with similar intersections of its size and capacity along Steve Irwin Way. “As part of the project we will upgrade the street lighting and carry out road widening on Bowen Road to help regulate the flow of traffic, and improve safety for pedestrians and vehicles.” “Sadly, many crashes result in serious injury or death. That’s why this program is specifically focused on improving trouble spots, to reduce the likelihood of crashes and the trauma that comes with them. “Works on the Steve Irwin and Bowen Road intersection are scheduled to be finished in mid2016, weather permitting.” Member for Glass House Andrew Powell said thanks to his consistent lobbying, and continued pressure from the community, we have finally
had the official confirmation that traffic signals will be installed at the Bowen Road and Steve Irwin Way intersection. “This is yet further proof that the united voice of a community can have an impact on the decision makers in the city,” he said. “Glass House residents have been asking for this for the past seven years at least, and I am delighted that our hard work has resulted in the Government giving this project the priority it deserves. “As many residents and commuters continue to choose to travel on the Steve Irwin Way, instead of the Bruce Highway, it just makes sense to install lights that will provide a safer intersection for those using Bowen Road and also the petrol station,” he said.

Montville resident Rowena Cavanagh spent 15 years as a young woman living in PNG, before returning to Australia. Many years later and wanting to return to the Pacific, Rowena decided to visit Fiji. That first trip was approximately eight years ago, and in that time, Rowena ended up buying a historic 100-year-old house in the UNESCO World Heritage listed town of Levuka - the original capital of Fiji. Over numerous subsequent visits to restore the property, Rowena built close ties with the local people of the town. During Cyclone Winston earlier this year, Levuka was devastated; and so in a bid to raise funds to help, Rowena has organised an open garden fundraising drive at her property ‘Wongawilli’ over this weekend; Saturday, May 14 - Sunday May 15. Entry is just $6.00 per adult with children admitted free. Rowena originally purchased the land in 1998 while on holiday - taken by the rolling hillside and pleasant valley view. In what turned out to be a monumental labour of love and determination, Rowena set about building rock walls, terracing and planting a striking array of tropically inspired plants as well as rainforest shrubbery and trees from tube stock. Visitors can see the incredible transformation from the original block to the current garden filled with year round colour and interest in a photo display on show during the weekend. With a long ‘wish list’ of unusual and interesting plants she wanted to grow, over the last 16 years Rowena has set about sourcing these plants from local nurseries and shared cuttings from others.
Before and after Cyclone Winston Several years ago the property next door to Rowena come up for sale, and so she expanded her garden, setting out to plant magnolias and camellias, and in particular, reticulatas in this section. The original garden is close to maturity and visitors will enjoy a good range of beautifully unusual plants as well as pleasantly meandering sections of both tropical and temperate flora. All proceeds from both days will go towards assisting the Fijian villages of Ovalau in the wake of Cyclone Winston to assist in the purchase of building materials. Open from 9.30am - 4.00pm each day. 19 Maleny Drive, Montville.

Volunteers making a difference National Volunteer Week (May 9-15) is a time to recognise and support the valued contribution our volunteers make to the Sunshine Coast region. Community Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said this year’s National Volunteer Week theme is ‘Give Happy, Live Happy’. “Research shows us volunteering makes people healthier and happier and can lead to better physical and mental health,” Cr McKay said. “National Volunteer Week provides an opportunity for council to recognise and support the valued contribution our volunteers make to the Sunshine Coast region.” Maree Anderson is one volunteer who is making a difference and reaping the rewards volunteering at Beerwah Library. Maree said she retired from full time work in 2013 and feels honoured to serve the community by being a friend of the Beerwah Library. “Our library is the hub of the community as it is a centre for learning, a meeting place, a fun outing for children, a place where you can sit and relax, read a paper or magazine, and take in an ever changing environment,” she said. “As a friend my volunteer duties are varied. One day I might find myself sewing children’s library bags which are sold as a fundraiser. Another day I’ll help prepare children’s craft activities, particularly associated with the themed children’s corner in the library,” said Maree. “I have even promoted the benefits of being a library member at the pop-up library at the Beerwah Street Party and trained as an Adult Literacy Tutor. friend of the library. “Volunteering opens up many new opportunities to be involved in the community and maintain an active lifestyle. “I was new to Beerwah when I retired and became a friend of Beerwah Library and found this a great way to meet new people and build connections in the community. “I feel volunteering is also about taking an opportunity to transfer skills and knowledge, learned in the workforce, to other activities,” she said. “Most of all, I like the people I meet, the friendships formed, the social aspects and partnership of a team approach and helping to achieve something worthwhile. “I highly recommend volunteering, whatever form it takes. There is no pressure in giving your best and feeling appreciated for your efforts. Volunteering is an opportunity for lifelong learning.” To find out about volunteer opportunities visit council’s website www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au.

Our next meeting promises to be something a little different and provides a great opportunity to take a bit of time to explore what we have at our doorstep. Come along and meet with us at The Lookout at the Glass House Mountains at 9.00am on Sunday, May 15. The Rotary Club of the Glass House Mountains will be catering and at this stage the cost of a meal will be approximately $5.00 $8.00 with all funds being retained by Rotary to assist in the great work they do in the community. Please RSVP to Libby Brown on 5438 7221 or email libbybrown@westnet.com.au by Tuesday, May 10 so we can get an idea of numbers for catering. We have tried a change to meeting dates this year and while it’s had some success, we would like to know from you, our members, what would suit you best. We have also considered the timing of our meetings and decided to open this question up to members also. Please let us know if you would prefer meetings to be held on a Tuesday or Wednesday, on the third week of each month, and if you’d prefer the meeting to start at 5.30pm for 6.00pm or 6.00pm for a 6.30pm start? Your responses would be appreciated and your preferences can be emailed to Libby at libbybrown@westnet.com.au I know I keep banging on about it, but our Annual General Meeting is getting closer all the time, so again I would ask everyone to consider the possibility of taking a position on the Executive Committee or one of the other sub committees. All positions will become vacant at the AGM and I know of at least one person who will not be standing again. Remember, this is your Chamber, so if you want it to succeed it needs your input. We will be advising the membership when nominations can be put forward but if you are interested in taking on one of the upcoming positions please feel free to come along to our next meeting and talk to the existing committee members. Cheers everyone and I look forward to seeing you all at the Lookout on Sunday, May 15.

All aboard for family fun The free train rides at Glasshouse Christian College’s 2015 Open Day were such a hit they are back again in 2016. Also back is the free giant jumping castle, animal farm and all day morning teas.
Food and beverages can be purchased and include wood-fired pizzas, potato slinkies, sizzling sausages, gourmet coffee and a range of tasty options from the Tuckshop. Visitors will be able to tour the brand new lower primary precinct. This is the final stage of a 5.8 million dollar project and the results are stunning spacious classrooms with state-of-the-art learning areas equipped with the modern technology providing the latest in flexible, innovate learning.
These free activities are directly related to learning about GCC. Free train rides help visitors see the expansive campus without wearing themselves out. The animal nursery is next to the Agricultural Science stand which presents one of the many career pathways open to older students. Free light refreshments show off our Hospitality students’ talents and the jumping castle is to wear off any energy that was saved by taking the train instead of walking!
This year GCC has special gift bags for visitors who want to make enrolment enquiries. There is something for everyone in this bag including a small gift very unique to GCC. Glasshouse Christian College is still one of the most affordable independent schools on the Sunshine Coast and has facilities that are the envy of much older schools.
Other activities on the day include student-led tours, Dance, Drama and Music performances, Science experiments and lots of interactive displays.
More importantly, students embrace the GCC values to grow up into responsible adults who want to help others and make the world a better place. To cater for working families Glasshouse Christian College Open Day is being held on Saturday, May 14, between 10.00am to 2.00pm. Everyone is welcome.

By Sonia Clark In January this year, a brand new initiative to promote inclusive creativity was launched at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre. Started by a small group of interested parents and teachers, the initiative sought to offer regular access to creative expression and intellectual stimulation for youth and adults with disabilities. EPICC (Enabling and promoting inclusive creative community) Maleny was developed in response to a local need to provide stimulating post school programs for those with disabilities. It seeks to offer a fun, person-centred approach that is enriching and mentally stimulating. Activities and engagement are explored regardless of disability or impairment. Unlike many other post school programs, the EPICC group seek to focus on creativity rather than general life skills and the response from participants, parents and teachers has been overwhelmingly positive. One of the managers of the group, Sue Irwin, is also the parent of a participant. “It’s wonderful to take Jacklyn to a centre where she is engaged in meaningful social interaction, intellectually and creatively stimulated, all in a supportive environment,” she said.
“Like the others in the group, she is excited to go each week and achieving a lot.” Currently the group has six participants and a small number of dedicated support people that meet at the Neighbourhood Centre during term time on Fridays from 9.30am - 3.30pm. The cost is $50.00 for the full day session which includes an experienced instructor along with teaching assistants to provide additional guidance and support. The program is presently exploring creative writing skills led by the highly trained educator, Debbie Rossow, who is joined by Cardie Boydell, a specialist music teacher and therapist, who leads a music and dance element in the program. Along with developing new skills and offering a creative outlet for greater personal expression, participants are also able to benefit from the opportunity to socialise and build local community connections. To find out more, or to enquire about joining, please contact Sue Irwin on 5499 9899 or email sue@proactivehealth.net.au or Debbie Rossow on 5499 9623, email drossow2858@ gmail.com. www.epiccmaleny.com

Pay $20,000 less for your solar system
Business owners /operators take advantage of tax incentive worth $20,000 Case Study 1
THE FRUIT BARN, BEERWAH 15kW Solar PV (photovoltaic system) 01/04/2015
Project Description
The Fruit Barn at Beerwah was consuming approximately $3,208 per quarter of electricity as a result of lighting and running large cool rooms day and night. In April 2015, they decided to focus on energy saving options to reduce their electrical expenses and lower their carbon footprint. The Fruit Barn adopted an All Energy HQ solar solution to save on their day time energy consumption. Barry and Noelene are ‘jumping with joy’ that they can now reinvest the energy savings into their business rather than paying peak electricity rates. The Fruit Barn project has a 15kW system with 60 solar panels installed on their existing shed. The new Energex rules allow up to 15kW to be grid connected on any three-phase power supply with the ability to export excess energy. Even though commercial fridges are running at night, the end result achieved a 50% saving on their energy bill.

Local Heroes Grants Living the Dream with Saver6.com More Round two of Andrew Powell’s Local Heroes Grants have been announced
Philip Hoffman, from Ipswich, has been blown away by the support of Landsborough based business Transportable Shade Sheds, and cloud based Saver6.com. Since deciding to change his career, he has found supplying a wide range of private and commercial shades and sheds has been a smooth and enjoyable experience. Initially taking the plunge to provide his son with work once he left school, he is using his wealth of previous work experience in the flooring and farming industries, to build the business at their own pace. It’s full steam ahead for this Saver6 Small Business, cleverly named Shade Shed Express! “Once I had made the decision to take on this great opportunity with my son and the team at Transportable Shade Sheds, the process itself didn’t take long,” explained Philip. “From the start the hand-over took just a couple of weeks and included in-depth training, which was very informative. Saver6.com has supported us every step of the way, and have even set us up with a Facebook page and website (www.saver6.info/philiphoffman) not to mention the direct marketing techniques they use. Whether needing help with a quote or product information they are always only too happy to help. “It’s a fantastic learning process, and both my son and I are enjoying the journey and developing new skills and usable knowledge along the way.” Philip is predicting that the business will continue to grow, so they will have an increasing income to support the family. The decision to buy the business was to give them both a lifestyle and a career change. “I like that it’s up to us to use the vast range of support from Saver6.com – and really the sky’s the limit!” said Philip. “Let’s face it, in today’s volatile employment climate if you can start your own business, take advantage of the small business tax rebates, be provided free business support and pay no franchising fees ever, what more could my son and I ask for? A Saver6.com business is the best business to be in right now.” “I am truly passionate to help customers find the best solution for your equipment requirements as well as offering the option to help install your shade, shed or storage solution in the Ipswich area.” “My business history has given me the background and understanding that customer satisfaction is the key to gaining recommendations from clients. My aim is to find the best solution to cover your assets and make them last longer, be it the car, boat, caravan or equipment.” Philip has found the quality of the Transportable Shade Sheds manufactured products is a major selling point to customers. The original ‘No Rust Bend’ Shade Shed is an innovative, top-quality, unique design made in Landsborough. Using the highest quality Australian made materials, (such as fully galvanised Bluescope steel and genuine Colorbond sheeting), they can custom design and build to suit your exact needs. They also offer a range of storage sheds that provide space to store personal or general household items. Each of these storage units are made from a patented design with lock security, choice of flooring, vermin proofing and can be simply delivered by a tilt tray. Whether you need big or small storage space, a cyclone proof carport, a place to give protection to the horses, cattle, hay or farming equipment; Shade Shed Express Ipswich have the right option for you. If you would like to be part of the life-changing team at Saver6.com, please call 1300 667 433 or 5405 3602 today. Business feature

and another four community groups in Glass House have been presented with a cheque for $250.00. The Local Heroes Grants are designed to provide a bit of a helping hand to community groups or individuals participating in local, state, national or international endeavours. Winners for Round Two in the Glasshouse Country & Maleny News area are: Beerburrum School of Arts Association, to maintain their grounds at the community Hall, and Witta Rec Club, to assist their planning for Witta Fest 2016. “The best part of this grant program is that I have the opportunity to catch up with members from these community groups and personally congratulate them on their grant," Andrew said. “They really are always so grateful to have been recognised in this way and are excited by what this small financial assistance can do for their club.” The remaining rounds for 2016 are Round 3 – Monday, June 13, Round 4 – Monday, August 15, Round 5 – Monday, October 10 and Round 6 – Monday, December 12. Currently, Mikayla is living overseas in Los Angeles where she is training and performing alongside multiple world champion trick rider and stuntman, Tad Griffith. Taking a break from wowing American audiences, Mikayla is returning home just in time to entertain audiences at this year’s Maleny Show. Barung Landcare Fungi fun and facts
Have you ever wanted to find out more about the fascinating field of fungi? Here in subtropical Queensland we are lucky to have a wealth of fungal diversity on show for much of the year. We’re now learning more about the integral role fungi play in our ecosystems: 80-90% of terrestrial plants form symbiotic relationships with fungi. These symbioses are known as mycorrhizas, from the Greek for ‘fungus root’. The fungus receives sugars from the photosynthesising plant, while the plant gets vastly improved access to nutrients and water. The mushrooms, toadstools and bracket fungi we see are often the ‘fruits’ of the mycorrhizas. We invite you to join us in the Conference Room at the Hinterland Business Centre, Maleny on Thursday, May 19, from 9.00am - 11.30am, where author and mycologist, Fran Guard, will introduce us to the fascinating world of fungi with a talk supported by a selection of her wonderful fungi photographs. You can bring in a fungi sample for Fran to identify; samples should be placed in a paper bag or a plastic container wrapped in a paper towel. Take care to dig out your specimen, avoid breaking it off at ground level as some species have identifying characteristics at and under their base. Copies of Fran's fungi identification book, Australian Subtropical Fungi, will be available for purchase at the workshop. Morning tea will be provided. The workshop costs $10.00 for Gardens for Wildlife or Barung members; nonmembers $15.00. Bookings are essential: Please call Barung Landcare on 5494 3151 or email info@barunglandcare.org.au
Looking for Bushcare Volunteers
The Coochin Creek Bushcare Group is a volunteer group in the Sunshine Coast Council’s Nature Conservation Program who are currently in need of volunteers. We are affiliated with The Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network (GMAN) and cooperate with SEQ Catchments to protect and restore our natural resources. We meet once a month to carry out weed control and bush restoration work in the Beerwah area. At the moment we are revegetating a small wetland area in the Caralan Way / Emma Place Park on the Coochin Creek close to the Beerwah Resource Centre. If you are interested in Bushcare, and would like to spend a few hours a month getting stuck into the nitty gritty, meeting like minded people, learning about native plants, weed identification and control, and having free access to the finest bushcare programs on the coast, you are welcome to come and join us. We normally spend three to four hours in the morning. We operate under the supervision of Rhonda Martin (Sunshine Coast Council). Personal protection equipment, all of the necessary tools, and tea is provided. Our current work site is the Caralan Park on Emma Place at Beerwah. With the Federal Government deciding on a double dissolution election to be held on Saturday, July 2, we’re once again in the grips of another election campaign so soon after the March local Council elections. Local voters will be asked to choose their preferred candidates for the Federal seat of Fisher, currently held by Mr Mal Brough. As Mr Brough did not seek preselection to run for the Liberal National Party, there will be a field of ‘newbies’ vying for your attention and your vote. As we always are, Glasshouse Country & Maleny News will be your premier place for information on the candidates … who they are, what they’ve done, what they believe in, what they promise to do (and not to do), and what they will deliver, if elected. The two major parties – the Australian Labor Party and the Liberal National Party – have had their candidates preselected for a while, and so we commence our ‘meet your candidate’ series with those two contenders. As others nominate, we’ll update you with their details, as well as providing all candidates with a number of opportunities to explain their positions on a range of topics and issues. A double dissolution election is like a normal election, except all the Senate seats are declared vacant and are voted on – rather than the usual
Bill Gissane Phone: 0437 763 270 Web: www.billgissane.com.au Post: PO Box 1651, Buddina, QLD, 4575 Email: bill.gissane@australianlabor.com.au Anna and I live here. We chose to live here. We chose to live here for many of the same reasons that I’m sure you choose to live here. I can tell you about my work history – growing up in the country, working in the steelworks, studying part time, graduating to management roles, being a partner in a globally successful business. But these are the things I have done; they’re not the things I believe in. I believe in my family. My four adult children needed to be nurtured and educated and cared for. Just like yours. My children needed a future to secure their way in life. Just like yours. These are the reasons I stand as your Labor candidate in Fisher. A Labor government will be about health, jobs, education and families and will put people before profits whilst protecting our environment. I believe in education. Labor will deliver education funding that will allow your child to have more one on one teacher contact at Beerwah and Maleny State High Schools. I believe in exceptional health care. Labor will ensure health funding that ultimately means local hospitals such as the Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital will continue to provide its vital local service. Labor created Medicare. Labor will protect Medicare. Labor believes it should be your Medicare card, not your credit card that determines your level of healthcare. I believe in equality of opportunity. Labor will ensure housing affordability is central to economic policies. Not the capacity to buy more investment properties. I believe in the future. Labor will deliver an NBN that will enable tomorrow’s jobs – right here on the coast and in the hinterland. I believe in our environment. Labor will develop sustainable energy and protection for our planet, our home. And – we’ll do it in our region! I believe in making the economy work for all people. Labor will ensure responsible initiatives that benefit our society, not just the top layer. Give me the opportunity to make this future a reality by being your representative in Canberra.
Enrol now for the 2016 Federal election
The Federal election has been announced and Australians must act now to ensure they are enrolled by the deadline of 8.00pm on May 23. Electoral Commissioner Tom Rogers said all Australian citizens aged 18 years and over are required by law to enrol and vote in the July 2 Federal election. “You can enrol conveniently online at www.aec.gov.au on your computer, tablet or smartphone,” Mr Rogers said. Mr Rogers also urged all Australians, especially those who have moved in the last three years, to immediately check that their details were up-to-date on the electoral roll. www.gcnews.com.au
race begins half-Senate election. This means that the list of Senators you can vote for will be twice as long as normal … remember the metre long ballot paper? It also means that the number of votes the Senate candidates need to be elected is only half of what they would normally require – only 7.7% of the vote rather than 14.28%. Voting in the Senate election has changed. You can still vote ‘above the line’ or ‘below the line’, but above the line you now need to number at least six boxes – previously you only had to number one above the line. For the House of Representative (of which our local seat is Fisher) the system is different. Unlike the recent council election, the voting for the House of Representatives uses the compulsory preferential system. So you will be asked to number every square on your ballot paper. Last Federal election (back in September 2013) saw 10 candidates nominate, one of the largest fields in Australia. The end result saw Mal Brough (Liberal National Party) taking 59.8% of the two-party preferred vote, trumping second place getter, Bill Schoch (Palmer United Party) gaining 45.3%.

I know that owning a small business can be challenging at the best of times, but it is very rewarding. It is this entrepreneurial spirit that the Turnbull Government wants to encourage – by reducing the tax burden and providing tax incentives that allow small businesses to immediately claim capital purchases up to $20,000. This encourages our local small businesses to grow and create jobs, so we can build a prosperous future for our children and grandchildren. Small business is the engine room of the Australian economy and the Turnbull Government is committed to ensuring Sunshine Coast residents can secure well paid local jobs. In conjunction with local institutions like the University of the Sunshine Coast, we have an opportunity to build new and innovative industries right here in our own backyard, including health hubs and IT businesses around our new $1.8 billion public hospital. Like everyone on the Sunshine Coast, I want to see better infrastructure, including an upgraded Bruce Highway, duplication of the rail line from Beerburrum to Nambour and the upgrade of the Sunshine Coast Airport. These projects are vital for our local economy, providing better opportunities for local families. If elected as the Member for Fisher I will fight relentlessly to ensure that the nation’s 10th largest city gets its fair share from State and Federal governments. I am a builder by trade and barrister by profession. I’m married with four daughters and live with my wife Leonie and youngest daughter in Alexandra Headland. I’ve been a member of the Alexandra Headland Surf Life Saving Club for nine years, and have served on its Management Committee as Secretary and Vice-President. I am currently a Patrol Captain and part of the Club’s 24-hour Emergency Response Team. I am also a former President of the Sunshine Coast Children’s Therapy Centre. I look forward to meeting you and finding out the issues that matter to you and your family.

“If you’re on the roll but moved since the last election, or changed your name, you need to update your enrolment details online at aec.gov.au.” Australians unable to go online can pick up a paper enrolment form at any AEC office or Australia Post outlet, however, correctly completed applications must be returned to the AEC by the 8.00pm May 23 deadline. Seventeen-year-old Australians turning 18 years of age on or before July 2, should also enrol and vote in the Federal election.

Assistance Dogs for kids with Autism
By Sonia Clark Early last month we featured an ‘out and about’ photo with Hinterland locals Bev and Phil Brocklehurst along with two rather adorable Compass Assistance Dogs. We thought we’d chat with Phil to learn more about the recently established Compass Assistance Dogs Program. The program is an initiative through local charity, The Compass Institute, which seeks to provide real futures for young people with intellectual and/or physical disabilities. Based in Palmwoods, the charity launched the Compass Assistance Dogs program in February this year. The program is headed up by Phil Brocklehurst,

who volunteers his time and experience to the organisation. Phil has always had an interest in the benefits of companion service animals and comes from a long history of this type of work with over 24 years of working with service dogs. Compass Assistance Dogs has been established to mainly assist children with autism by providing specially trained dogs that are responsive to the needs of the child by providing a calming and supportive influence in their daily lives. The program also aims to provide these service dogs at substantially more affordable costs to families - at around $2,500 for the dog as opposed to costs of up to $20,000. With studies indicating the advantages of early intervention for children with autism, Compass Assistance Dogs can provide a number of benefits such as reducing social isolation, providing comfort and behavioral disruption techniques, as well as increasing independence with less reliance on human caregivers. “Once trained and living with the designated families, these dogs make a huge difference to the everyday lives of both the children and their parents/caregivers,” said Phil. All breeds of dogs are considered for the program and currently Phil and the team are establishing links with local breeders and animal shelters. Once assessed as suitable, the young puppies are hosted with ‘puppy raisers’ at about eight weeks of age for approximately one year. These volunteers assist in the early socialisation of the dogs before formal training commences. This takes between three to six months depending on the dog. School News Prep cheers up Humpty Dumpty Contributed by Lin Smith Recently nursery rhyme characters were cordially invited to Glasshouse Christian College Prep for Humpty Dumpty’s surprise party. Poor Humpty had been so downhearted after his fall that Old King Cole encouraged the GCC Prep staff to plan a party for Humpty. Each GCC Prep class determined a good time and venue for their party, and made decisions about the food, games and decorations needed. Many wonderful visitors came to witness the delightful parade of characters led around by Old Mother Hubbard, Little Miss Muffet, Jack and Jill, Old King Cole and Pussy Cat (who had visited the Queen). We then recited or sang three nursery rhymes for the gathering. The Prep students made Humpty’s day super special and enjoyed some exciting learning in the process! As well as the actual party time, they participated in nursery rhyme activities such as sequencing, role play and craft. Our heartfelt thanks go to the Prep parents for their support and their impressive creativity with the variety of costumes worn by the children. Once again, it was a great day to be in Prep.

Remember our heroes!
Contributed by Michelle Lenz Mooloolah State School put together a special ANZAC Day parade and the hall featured beautiful displays and posters of ANZAC Day memorabilia, with a magnificent slide show that played in the background. The student leaders gave amazing speeches, honoured our guests and read out names of our local veterans from the area. The Principal, Mr Dowdell, gave a speech to honour our guests, and Bernie Verwayen (veteran) gave his speech to address the parade. The school choir sang three songs that were hauntingly beautiful for the guests; they were the Australian Anthem, New Zealand Anthem and Flanders Fields. It truly was beautiful to close your eyes and listen to, so thank you Mrs Frishkorn and Mrs Kelly for remarkable work with the students. All the staff and students of Mooloolah State School worked hard to make the day very memorable in honouring our special guests, veterans Bernie Verwayen, Peter Mc Donald and Adrian Dunbeven, to the special parade. Two student representatives from each year level walked to the front of the parade to lay flowers and wreaths which were later transferred to the outside memorial by the student leaders and the veterans who were there. They truly did an amazing job from start to finish and then after the parade the veterans had a question and answer session with the Year 4 to Year 6 students. Mooloolah State School community should feel proud of the efforts and soulful remembrance.
No obstacle to fun Beerwah Kindergarten was a hive of activity last week as all of the children hopped, climbed, jumped, crawled and rolled their way through the annual Obstacle-a-thon. The fundraising event has been a long-standing tradition for the kindy, being held every year for the past 18 years. Beerwah Kindy co-director Rebecca Mackintosh said every child gave their all to complete 10 laps of the most challenging obstacle course to date. The event kicked off with a Zumba warm-up led by Charlotte's mum Angela before the children donned their lap passes and hit the course with gusto. Beerwah Kindy co-director Katie Piva said they were once again blown away by the level of support from not only kindy parents, but the wider community who sponsored the children for the event. The event is expected to attract more than $1,000 for new equipment. Since the children did all of the hard work, they will collaborate with their teachers to decide what to buy with the funds. Mud, sweat and cheers
Contributed by Alison Edwards On Friday, April 29, Glass House Mountains State School was a buzz with excitement for their annual Run 4 Fun. An idea based on the current craze of obstacle runs, the Run 4 Fun is about getting all members of the community active. Nearly all 400 students participated as did numerous parents, former students and members of the wider Glass House community, including quite a few grandparents. A carnival atmosphere greeted people as they arrived at the school oval with market stalls, food stalls, music, entertainment and the ever-popular coffee van. Bored with the traditional cross-country run, the school has been innovative in their approach to increase engagement and participation in school. No longer just boring laps of the oval, participants must now run over, under, through, around and between, a wide variety of challenging obstacles. Set over a course of approximately 600 metres students are sent out in year level waves to complete as many laps as possible in a set amount of time. Not concerned with places or times, students are allowed to attempt new challenges in a fun, safe and encouraging atmosphere. This is also fostered with many parents getting involved and running along as well. Including quite a few members of the community in some rather outrageous costumes! From mud pits, to spider webs, to tunnel crawls, to the slip n slide through to a thorough hosing from the Rural Fire Brigade, every participant young and old finished the day with a huge smile, lots of muddy and wet clothes and a happier outlook for the day. This fantastically successful event could not be accomplished without the help of the many community members who have volunteered their time and energy, money and support.

BreastScreen Queensland is back at the Maleny Hospital from May 16 to June 6. Women aged 40 years and over are encouraged to take advantage of this free service and take a positive step towards monitoring their breast health. BreastScreen Queensland Sunshine Coast’s Mobile Service Health Promotion Officer Kelly Hart said the service had appointments available now, including some early morning and late afternoon appointments. “We would like to invite women to take advantage of this free, local health service while it is in the area,” Ms Hart said. “This time of year is often a busy time for the BreastScreen Van in Maleny with many local women due for their bi-annual breast screen. “However it is not just women who receive a letter from BreastScreen Queensland who can participate in this free screening program. “Women aged 40 years and older who haven’t received a letter from BreastScreen but who would like to make an appointment with our service can just call 13 20 50. There are no referrals required,” Ms Hart said. While women with a family history of breast cancer are more at risk, nine out of 10 Queensland women diagnosed with breast cancer, have no family history of the disease. “As there is currently no means of preventing breast cancer, the focus in reducing deaths from this disease has been on finding breast cancer as early as possible,” Ms Hart said. “There is no need for women to put off having a breast screen any longer. It’s quick, simple, convenient, free, and a doctor’s referral is not required.” For Ladies in Beerwah please note that the van will return to Beerwah October 24 to November 17. Phone 13 20 50 for more information, or to make an appointment at Maleny or at one of the other permanent screening services on the Sunshine Coast. Saturday appointments are available.

Living - History Glasshouse Mountains Sawmill - Coonowrin Road
Lutton’s Mill was originally operating at Imbil and commenced milling pine at the Coonowrin Road Sawmill in the Glass House Mountains in 1948. Electricity was connected to the site in 1948 allowing it to start milling operations. The Mill was engaged in the manufacture of fruit boxes for local farmers and the Brisbane market. William Isaac Burgess moved his family into the house adjacent to the Mill in late 1948 and planted pineapples the same year. Rural living following the end of World War II was very different compared with today. The toilet was usually located well away from the main house and a night visit in winter was neither comfortable nor relaxing. For the convenience of the Burgess family, a freestanding toilet was constructed at the back of the house and was furnished with a boxed wooden seat enclosing a heavy metal container. At the end of the week the container was removed and the contents buried on the property. Sawdust and charcoal were used to ‘preserve’
the mix. The 1948 house is currently owned and occupied by Ethel Burgess who, thankfully, no longer has to keep supplies of sawdust and charcoal on hand. However, the toilet structure remains on the property although ravaged by white-ants and dry rot. Recently the wooden seat and metal container were removed from the structure, preserved, and are now on public display at Bankfoot House. Ethel was happy to donate the family’s first toilet to graphically illustrate to young visitors how privacy, comfort and hygiene have changed since 1948.

National Neighbourhood Centres and Volunteers Week (9-15 May) Our wonderful Neighbourhood Centres
Neighbourhood Centres, otherwise called Community Centres, provide so much more in our communities than we may realise. While they vary in size and scope, they all aim to respond to the needs of their local communities and are managed by members of the community. One aspect that makes Neighbourhood Centres in this part of the hinterland so special, is that they are almost all 100% run by volunteers. There are five Neighbourhood Centres in our local area: Mooloolah Community Centre, Morris House (Landsborough), Beerwah and District Youth and Community Centre (BADYACC), Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre and Maleny Neighbourhood Centre. Two Hinterland Community Development Programworkers, Ana Greenfield and Natasha Odgers, work alongside the Neighbourhood Centres and other community organisations with common values and goals. They say the Centres offer a place and social fabric for people in local communities to strengthen and be supported together. “Through various activities, programs, relationships and information, the Neighbourhood Centres work towards building a sense of place and sense of community in their local areas,” Ana said. “The Centres also play an important role in supporting those disadvantaged in our communities through emergency relief.” “When we asked local volunteers about what makes Neighbourhood Centres so valuable, the main benefits boiled down to: social networking; friendships; reduced social isolation; support; community spirit; collaboration; purpose; comradery; and local people volunteering to help their local community,” Natasha added. Most of the Neighbourhood Centres depend on grants and room hire to run. Centres also have other various ways to source funds such as through fundraising events, sponsorships, membership fees and social enterprises. The Neighbourhood Centres offer opportunities for people to: gain social connections and skills as a volunteer; initiate community projects with other volunteers; express community needs; and give to the community (in-kind or cash). All the Neighbourhood and Community Centres receive the Community Partnerships funding from Sunshine Coast Council for part of their core operations. If you would like to become part of your local Neighbourhood or Community Centre, or to find out more, please contact or visit one of the Centres.
Volunteer Roles
Tasks and roles for volunteers vary between Centres and range across the following: organising events, helping with activities and programs, administration, media and marketing, welfare, governance, building maintenance, gardening and fundraising.

Each year the community initiatives held at the Centre vary and grow. This year the Neighbourhood Centre ran the first Glass House Mountains Community Barbecue, which brought many locals together. Also so far this year, the Centre has held a ‘Positively Planning your Future’ session for seniors and a ‘Connect with your Neighbours’ workshop. More events like this are planned. A new free counselling service is on offer Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons. The Centre holds the Glasshouse Country Women’s Social Group for women of all ages seeking fun, friendship and support. The group meets every second and fourth Wednesday of the month from 12.30pm – 2.30pm. There are often guest speakers and fun excursions. Some highlights from 2015 that are planned to continue this year include: a House Concert, Clothes Swap, a series of events in Mental Health week, and an insightful door knocking project listening to people share ‘what it’s like to live in Glass House Mountains’.
Maleny Neighbourhood Centre
Regular activities and services include: • A community lunch every Thursday at 12.30pm where volunteer cooks provide a delicious lunch for a $5.00 donation • The Fix It Cafe where things can be repaired for a $5.00 donation • Flexi School • Visiting services i.e. Counselling, Legal, JP and Centrelink, and • An extensive Emergency Relief program. The Centre also focuses on increasing awareness on community matters, such as Say No to Family and Domestic Violence, Homelessness, Mental Health Week and National Healing Day. The Centre’s biggest annual event is a free Christmas breakfast run by volunteers and enjoyed by more than 450 guests. The Neighbourhood Centre has hosted training in First Aid for Mental Health. The Centre also provides meeting spaces for many different types of activities such as Parents of Teenagers, Peer to Peer Support Group, counselling, singing, meditation and events.
Mooloolah Community Centre
The well-stocked Op Shop at the Centre receives donations of good quality clothing, household goods, furniture, books and more, to sell at low prices. The Community Centre monthly community barbecues, held on the first Friday of each month, have become a popular venue for the locals to share a meal with neighbours and friends. Musicians are welcome to perform. There is a Community Garden where volunteers
grow food together, help local gardeners with advice, and encourage children to take part. The garden is open on Saturdays from 2.00pm – 5.00pm. A Justice of the Peace Service operates on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9.30am – 12.00noon. Counsellors are also available, with appointments made by a GP referral.

Cafe de Fudge So much so, I left a bit in the bowl to make room for the chia chocolate cake, which was so moist and delicious it disappeared very quickly. As it was gluten free, I didn't feel too bad about scoffing it! As always, Julie's amazing food and the care she takes with presentation made the stop well worth it. You may even be interested to know that this little slice of paradise will be on the market soon with owners Mick and Julie looking to move overseas in the near future.
I often drop in to cafe de fudge next to the big barrel for a coffee, or a sneaky piece of fudge, but this time I stayed for lunch on the deck. Julie's homemade pumpkin soup was an instant choice along with a slice of chia chocolate cake and a coffee. As always, the coffee was spot on. The pumpkin soup then came with two crusty garlic rolls and a very generous serving of sour cream. Made with Julie's own homegrown pumpkins, the soup was delicious and very filling.

You Said It Quo Vadis NBN?
Sunshine Coast Council, through its Planning Scheme, has recognised the requirement for retention of scenic amenity through its region. This standard is an expectation for residents and visitors to our region. In the Maleny and hinterlands area, the microwave tower proposals advised to local communities and Development Applications (DA) lodged by NBN, continue to be contrary to requirements within that Planning Scheme. NBN has adopted guerrilla like tactics - pop up, deliver a proposal, disappear and leave the local people upset, confused and unsure of their future. This NBN process has now been ongoing for over 20 months within this area. Examples of this local advice from NBN ‘Information Sessions’ include: Palm Street, Sinclair Lane, Burgess Avenue, Appaloosa Drive, Peachester. Examples of submitted DA’s include: Beerwah, Glass House Mountains, Eudlo. There is an alternative to microwave towers – fibre to the house, kerb or node. This will provide a faster and safer service for local residents and businesses. On behalf of local communities, I call on Cr Jenny McKay and Cr Rick Baberowski to work with the re-elected council and the local communities to enforce council’s requirements within their Planning Scheme and thereby maintaining the scenic amenity of the greater hinterland area of the Sunshine Coast. Jim Straker Reeseville
Waste of money
I don’t know if anyone has noticed in Glass House at the left hand turn at Reed Street to Beerwah twice curbing has been completed and twice they have taken it all up. No wonder road maintenance is so expensive. How could this mistake be made twice? Kaz Glass House Mountains
Re: Steve Irwin Way Duplication
As a resident of this community since 1988, and now residing in Glass House Mountains, I would like to allay fears of some residents of possible Steve Irwin Way duplication. I was an employee of Roadtek before Campbell Newman’s razor gang put us out of work. Money had run out for stage three of the duplication (Mooloolah Valley turnoff to north Landsborough) eight years ago and with no money I doubt that it will ever go ahead. Rest assured Steve Irwin Way will never be duplicated in my lifetime, I’m 55, but I doubt any children will see it happen. Those concerned if it does somehow happen, and they have driveways on the current road, well rest assured to appease you, service roads will have to be added, thus significantly adding to the cost – so it won’t happen. On another note concerning Roadtek, are taxpayers going to be charged for the kerb and guttering blunders at the new Glass House Mountains intersection where signal traffic lights are being installed? They have put it down twice, then ripped it up, will this be third time lucky? Paul Simpson Glass House Mountains 28

Response to Reed Street Intersection letters
I appreciate the patience of all Glass House residents whilst we resolve some challenges with the Reed Street intersection upgrade. During construction, it was identified that heavy vehicles were not going to be able to use the intersection safely, and as this is a designated route for such vehicles, it is important that we resolve the matter now, rather than later. Tests and minor redesigns are being done and I am confident the challenges will be resolved very shortly. Andrew Powell MP
A Big thank you
I would like to share what happened to me on the ANZAC Day weekend. On Sunday I spent the day at Inskip Point near Rainbow Beach visiting my parents. On the way home at night, for some reason, the inner mudguard under the driver’s side tyre broke off. At this time I was only five minutes out of Rainbow Beach. Within five minutes three young guys (early 20’s) with two cars, stopped to see if I was okay. They fixed the loose mudguard with cable ties and were going the same way as I was and suggested I follow them just in case. I was in the middle, one car in front and the other behind me. Unfortunately young adults, especially males, don’t get enough credit. Thank you for your kindness and consideration and coming to the rescue of a mother and her children. I don’t know their names, all I know is two of them live in Nambour and the other one turned off at Sippy Downs. I arrived home safe and sound with my young family. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You. Candace Dell Beerwah
lost recently to these particular dogs. I know of at least three other families in the vicinity of Old Gympie Road who have suffered this experience. Council regulations require owners to keep dogs securely fenced and owners should be held responsible for damage to livestock, caused by their animals. The matter has been reported to council and if no owner lays claim to these dogs we will seek to have them treated as wild dogs with eradication by bait. Wild dog baiting is already being carried out in the forestry not far away. If anyone has any further information regarding dog attacks close to Sahara or Old Gympie Road, we can be contacted via this newspaper. Name supplied Glass House Mountains
Special occasion thanks
Trevor and Norma Stevens celebrated their 50th Wedding anniversary at Club Glasshouse on April 30 with their immediate family. They wish to thank management and staff for their dedication and hard work to make this celebration a success. They were joined in marriage in the Uniting Church in Catherine Street, Beerwah and the reception was held at the RSL Hall in 1966.
Roaming ‘wild’ Dogs
I wish to express my total disgust at people who allow their domestic dogs to roam freely, both day and night. We have recently been through the sickening and traumatic experience of finding our five beloved pet chickens, brutally mauled overnight and left outside their pen. These dogs killed for the sake of killing! The chickens were securely fenced and locked up but two large ‘domestic’ dogs dug up the enclosure to gain access. How do I know they were domestic dogs?

Elected Linking youth and government The YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament has been launched and this year, Eleanor Stuart, has been appointed to the electorate of Glass House. Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell MP, recently met with Eleanor to discuss her vision for the Sunshine Coast and how she feels she can help young people in our community. “Eleanor is an impressive young woman who has clearly set out a path for herself and what she wants to achieve, not only as a Youth Parliamentarian, but for life in general. She strongly believes that our young people have a huge contribution to make to our community and wants to start encouraging them to speak out,” Mr Powell said. “Queensland Youth Parliament is a program that has been designed to guide youth through the Parliamentary process and engage their views on a wide range of issues. Eleanor met with Mr Powell this week where they discussed how she would like to use this opportunity to ensure young people have a voice in Queensland and that voice is heard by Government. “At a personal level, leadership and politics have always been a part of my life so I am overjoyed that I can use my skills in this area,” said Eleanor. “Much of society stereotypes youth as being irresponsible and ignorant towards the future of Australia, however, I want to educate the public that we are switched on, passionate and want to contribute to society.” Eleanor has conveyed to Mr Powell that she has a strong interest in education and is keen to be included in the debate on the proposed Youth Parliament Education, Training and Skills committee bill. “Meeting someone like Eleanor who has the enthusiasm and drive to ensure that we adults better understand the value and contribution of our community's youth gives me a real buzz and makes me excited for the future of our state,” said Mr Powell. “Eleanor is keen to hear from anyone who feels they have ideas to share and views they want considered as part of the Youth Parliament process,” Mr Powell concluded. Eleanor Stuart can be contacted on the following email address - glasshouse@ymcaqyp.org.au

Calling all volunteers – come along to a morning tea in my office.
Many of you would know that I have held a ceremony for Glass House volunteers for the past few years to publicly thank them for their efforts and dedication to our community. This year I know many volunteers are taking up the opportunity to attend an event hosted by the Member for Fisher at Australia Zoo which will surely be a wonderful celebration. With this in mind, I have decided not to host the formal Glass House awards this year and will rather be encouraging Glass House volunteers come along to a morning tea in my office. If you are a volunteer and would like to register for the morning tea, please email my office – glass.house@parliament.qld.gov.au or phone 5435 2013.
Community Support
It was wonderful to read in the May 4 edition of Glasshouse Country & Maleny News just how many community members showed their support to ‘The Glass House Family – Gemma, Chris and their son Chayse’. I was not surprised at the extensive list of businesses and individuals who pitched in and helped this family in need, either by donating goods and or by making a financial contribution. It just goes to prove what an amazing community we have in Glass House.
Step closer to Mooloolah kids skate park
Congratulations to the Mooloolah community on being successful for a $20,000 grant from the Federal Government towards a new skate park for Mooloolah. All we have to do now is secure the land from the state government.
Mooloolah graffiti
It has been noted there seems to be more graffiti activity than usual. Be warned, community and businesses are watching and council will remove quickly.
Mark your diaries for Mooloolah must-do events A number of fabulous community events are on the horizon in Mooloolah including Mooloolah State School Rodeo on May 17 at Mooloolah Sport and Rec. and the MooFest Festival will return soon also on September 10. Watch this space for more details and be sure to head along to support your local community.
Help spot the koalas
Council is calling on the community to help us spot the koalas at the Maroochy Botanic Garden, Tanawha on Sunday, May 29. Not only will residents get to explore one of the natural jewels on the Sunshine Coast, they will be helping to protect these precious little furry Aussies. There are currently three koalas with tracking collars at the Maroochy Botanic Gardens – Graham, Charles and Lizzie. This project stems from council’s Koala Conservation Plan and will hopefully help us learn a little more about the movements of Koalas within the vicinity of the Botanic Gardens. Interested residents will need to meet at the Arts and Ecology Centre by 9.00am before being allocated to a search team, then stay to enjoy a free sausage sizzle, in the surrounds of the garden. Bring covered walking shoes and drinking water.
Keep the Connect with Your Creek momentum flowing
It may interest you to know that during 2015 the Queensland Parliamentary committees held 170 public hearings and briefings, and received over 2,000 submissions as part of their inquiries. If you have a particular interest in any of the bills, or issues before committees, you can follow the progress of the respective committee inquiries and get involved via the Parliamentary website. Many committee hearings and briefings are also broadcast live on Parliament’s website and are then available to be watched on replay afterwards. For more information, visit www. parliament.qld.gov.au and select the ‘Work of Committees’ tab to find all information relevant to committees and their current and past inquiries.
Last week, I had the pleasure of presenting the winner of the Connect to Your Creek Week competition draw with the fantastic prize of a 2+1 kayak from local manufacturing company Viking Kayaks. The aim of the week held in April was to encourage residents to think about ways they could form a connection with their local waterways and, in turn, the motivation to value and care about them going forward. Council and Unitywater teamed up to host a heap of different fun, educative and information events to get people into the spirit, including boat cruises on Pumicestone Passage and Maroochy River, paddling on Currimundi Lake and tree planting along various creeks and lakes throughout the region. While the successful week has now come and gone, our hope is for all members of the community to continue to use the important principles of the campaign to respect, appreciate and enjoy their local waterways in their own way, anytime of the year.

Grevillea cultivar This is a fantastic new Grevillea cultivar. It has stunning sprays of rich pink and orange flowers which nectar feeding birds find irresistible. It makes a truly stunning rounded ball of a plant one metre high by the same wide. It requires very little maintenance or pruning and is best suited to a position in full sun with good drainage. Due to its size it is ideal in retaining walls or large pots. Do yourself a favour and plant this stunning new Grevillea, as its name suggests it's Soopa Doopa ! GLASSHOUSE COMMUNITY CHURCH
From the churches What about Faith?
C
Pr David Edgar - Seventh-Day Adventist Church
Sometimes I wonder if I know anything about faith because in my early Christian years I thought my faith would grow as I matured. Recently, while watching a movie about space travels, the words “what is faith then but persistent hope in the face of relentless doubt,” leapt out to me from the screen. This understanding, literally, occupied my thoughts for weeks because it defined faith in a way I had not considered and although true to a point, it is not the biblical view of faith. There is no doubt hope is a corollary of faith, but in the things of God, there can be no doubt at all. This is the point the Apostle makes in James, chapter 1, ‘But let him ask in faith, with no doubting…’ Last year I think I faced the worst challenge of my life and I would have given anything to avoid it, but after many days of prayer the time came GCNEWS Add sept 12 2013.ai 1 10/02/2015 5:26:35 PM when I had to face my fears. I pleaded with God to get me out of my jam. All He said was: ‘Stay MOOLOOLAH: Sun 10 am Public Hall, Bray Rd

the course David.’ I have to confess, I thought this a bit callous, but then something happened. That night I had a dream, and in the dream I was standing before a small cliff covered with luxuriant greenery and flowing down the face was a beautiful waterfall shielding a small cave; the sight was breathtaking. I soon realised the water represented my fear and the cave, victory. I knew I had to get wet, but then the overpowering conviction came to me that, because I asked with no doubt, He had already given me the victory, before I got wet! I learned this is true biblical faith. I wish I could say I had this faith thing in a box and all sorted out, but I’ve also found that every faith experience is an important step, not only, in our relationship with Jesus Christ, but also, on our journey to the Kingdom. Beerwah students rise to cross country challenge Beerwah State School had their annual Cross Country Day last Thursday, with students from Prep to Year 6 participating. Amidst the rain showers, the cross country track was set on the school's oval, and bushland, making it a true cross country run. The upper school ran three kilometre and two kilometre distances, with the Year 3s through to prep running a modified shorter course. Each student received a participation award, with the younger years receiving a certificate for the first three place getters on the day. Students who came in the top three from the upper school look forward to representing Beerwah State School in the upcoming District Cross Country Trials on Monday, May 16 at St Michael's College. There was great team spirit shown on the day.
Glasshouse Hinterland AFL Masters first home game
After the successful start to the preseason where the Glasshouse/Bribie Master (over 35s) AFL team has won their first three games, they're looking forward to the first game for the season against the Springwood Pumas. The game will be played on Saturday, May 14, 3.00pm at the Landsborough Sports Complex on Tunnel Ridge Road Landsborough. A barbeque and bar facility will be available and the club would like to welcome any interested spectators to come down and watch these olden day champions relive their glory days. The purpose of ‘Masters Footy’ is to provide an opportunity for people to play (start, resume or continue) Australian Rules outside of the senior competitions. The motto is Footy for Fun, Fitness and Friendship. There are physical and social benefits of playing footy for as long as possible and Masters attract all sizes, shapes and playing abilities from complete newbies to ex-AFL players. Any interested players who are keen to have a kick, or become involved with the team, can contact Craig Bales at 0414 225 329 or Craig. Bales@Quantum.com

Good pets After a Tuesday fishing on the River Test, near Southampton in Southern England, Trevor is walking from the pier carrying two brown trout in a bucket. He is approached by a Water Conservation Officer who asks him for his fishing license. Trevor replies to the environmentalist, “I was not fishing and I did not catch these brown trout, they are my pets. Every day I come down to the water and put these fish into the water and take them for a walk to the end of the pier and back. When I'm ready to go I whistle and they jump back into
the bucket and we go home.” The officer, obviously, does not believe him and he reminds Trevor that it is illegal to fish without a license. The fisherman turns to the warden and says, “If you don't believe me then watch,” and he throws the trout back into the water. The warden says, “now whistle to your fish and show me that they will jump out of the water and into the bucket.” The fisherman turns to the officer and says, “what fish?” Submitted by Kim, Reesville

CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 You are better off this week gathering information and then making any firm decisions with the help of the Moon in Virgo by next Monday. A Venus/Pluto contact brings passion intensely into your life. Any travel plans must be given flexibility for delays in transport due to severe blockages. Safety is priority. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 There may be a cause for celebration if much-needed funds flow into your home from your partner. Maybe another’s resources are a great help to you, and you have of course worked for these benefits so you have earned the enjoyment. Deep insights now can benefit your own sense of worth and values. PISCES February 20 – March 20 There should be a successful outing with a congenial group of people, and that is very appropriate for you this week. Involvement with community affairs is strong over this weekend, and you will find Sunday and Monday that other people are very decisive. You give partners a free hand in social agendas. ARIES March 21 – April 20 If there is a setback don’t let the whole thing put you off, there is a larger picture coming. Keep a positive attitude, make do with less for now if you have to. Through the weekend you may have to navigate through tasks or services. Sunday, and thereafter, is better for precision and detail work.

VIRGO August 22 – September22 Happy times come through travel and recreation. You feel like as if you do not want to sit there, you want to stand up and make something happen! When those you care about are unresponsive you try to learn what is bothering them. A friend or relative, at a distance, appreciates hearing from you. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 Emotions are complicated and flying high but all you have to do is remember to value your own worth. Whatever you may be sharing, such as love, money, intimate relations, or business contacts, all these are making you feel good and closer to someone in an intimate way. Improved odds likely. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 The planet Jupiter is moving through your eleventh sector and lends support to you and your efforts to realise your hopes and dreams. Good friends are fortunate in your life now and perhaps the luck of one or two of them will rub off on you! A conversation with interesting news is revealing this weekend. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 If you need to attend to a health matter then look carefully at your central nervous system as we have two planets, namely Mars and Saturn riding a wave through Sagittarius. So this is a time of impulsive over eating or picking the wrong times and then having to rush to make amends causing accidents.

Week beginning 11/05/2016 TAURUS April 21 – May 21 This is a week you can use your strong convictions as well as the drive and determination to see things through. You will find that you are very persuasive this week and can charm the flying foxes out of the trees! Your views exert a subtle magnetism and others are ready to follow along. Generosity features. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 This is a week where you take on an intellectual cool approach to material matters. Sunday sees the Moon in precise Virgo energies, so that it is the time to do the tasks you have been putting off for a while. There may be a visit to a hospital or you are helping people requiring support. Begin a therapy. CANCER June 22 – July 22 Some stars are making it difficult to keep up friendly relations with co workers. If things do become strained your best strategy is to stay out of sight, to avoid locking horns over trifles. The weekend is excellent to make calls, go shopping, and connect with others to make plans. Sunday is your best day! LEO July 23 – August 22 Out of this week may see you with a great idea, and that can become the focal point of recovery. There is also the possibility of an intense attraction that can deepen more into a relationship. Research on practical financial matters over the weekend will get you off to a good start when the banks open.
