Hi Everyone

I

n Glasshouse Country, last Melbourne Cup Day wasn’t just an opportunity for people to get creative with their outfits, at the Beerwah Hotel and Club Glasshouse they added a whole extra layer of creativity to their events this year. This week’s front cover features two lovely ladies standing in front of a great ‘photo booth style backdrop’ at the Beerwah Hotel which definitely brought the feeling of a day at the ‘Spring Racing Carnival’ to Beerwah. I have to say it is amazing what a bit of creativity and an energetic woman can achieve with some well-chosen

props. Great work by Janelle Steensen (aka the Scarecrow lady). At Club Glasshouse they had taken the pressure off their guests by providing the materials and some creative guidance from the very talented Sonia for the guests to create their own hats on the day. There were some interesting results, particularly the ones that the men created for themselves! It was great to see so many local ladies out enjoying themselves. If you would like to check out the fashions off the field, take a look at page 28 and 29 and we also have more photos on our Facebook page. Regards,

Open garden to support rural and remote farmers

Landsborough

Dental Prosthetist PETER J. LANGLOIS REG. (QLD) • Acrylic Full / Lightweight Metal Partial Dentures • Relining Existing Dentures • Repairs • Mouthguards

Sometimes in life you meet someone that leaves such an impression on you that it makes you stop and think – what could I do to support their efforts? That is the reaction Jenny Wellsteed had after meeting Sister Christene Henry from Downs and West Community Support. The group offers encouragement and practical support to our neighbours in rural and remote Queensland who are often severely affected by climatic changes. Jenny said the motivation behind the organisation was simply a sense of responsibility to provide compassion and to share our resources with those in need. It is a not-for-profit program that is funded by the people for the people. Jenny and her husband Keith have a Macadamia Nut farm at Crohamhurst (just outside of Peachester) and while their farm has not suffered the devastating effects felt by farmers in western Queensland, she can understand just how challenging life on the land must be for them, and knows how proud they are, and how difficult

it would be for them to ask for support. Jenny decided she wanted to raise funds to support the organisation, and being a keen gardener decided to open her garden and serve breakfast or lunch to other locals, so together they could raise funds for this vital community organisation. So on Sunday, November 23 she and her husband Keith will be opening their front gate and inviting the community in to enjoy the day. Keith also plans to offer tours of the Macadamia farm to guests on the day. The event will kick off at 8.00am and run until 3.00pm. There will be a buffet breakfast for those that want to come early, and those arriving later in the day will be served lunch. Cost is $15.00 for adults and children under 12 free. The garden is located at 179 Crohamhurst Road, Crohamhurst, and overlooks the Glass House Mountains. For catering purposes Jenny would appreciate if people could book before the day on 5494 9598 or 0439 949 298.

Ride4Yvonne

Celebrate Beerwah – the next step

On Sunday, December 7, North Coast Horse Trail Riders Club, Caboolture Trail Horse Club and SCATER are coming together to hold Ride4Yvonne a fundraiser for our friend, Yvonne Sharples who is currently having treatment for breast cancer. All of the funds raised on the day will go to directly to Yvonne who is an incredibly selfless and courageous woman. Riders are encouraged to dress up in pink and there will be a prize for the ‘best dressed horse and rider’. Ride4Yvonne will leave from the bus stop at Forestry Road, Landsborough at 8.30am. We suggest riders arrive in plenty of time to fill out required paperwork and saddle-up! The ride cost is $20.00 per rider, non-members of NCHTRC, CTHC and SCATER are required to fill out a waiver and pay $10.00 Public Liability insurance. After the ride, a barbecue lunch and cold drinks are available for purchase, so riders remember to bring a chair for yourself, and water for your horse. We are having a raffle and already have some great prizes donated from local businesses, it has been really incredible the support we have received and to those who have already donated thank you so much. Any more donations would be greatly welcomed; even food or drinks for the barbecue would be appreciated. We will be having an auction on the day too so remember to bring your piggy bank!

There will be a photographer there on the day and you can also purchase photos. So riders and come and enjoy a ride in the Landsborough forestry for a really good cause. Please RSVP if you plan to come on the day (for catering purposes) either by email on northcoasthorse@bigpond.com or by phoning Robyn 0416 260 508 or Sue 0408 966 921. We also have a bank account for anyone who would like to donate directly to Yvonne. You can do this at North Coast Horse Trail Riders Club Inc, Bank of Queensland, Beerwah. BSB 124183 A/C 21964520. Any donations can be posted to NCHTRC, P.O. Box 223, Landsborough, 4550 or donations can be handed to the great staff at Landsborough Post Office.

The Beerwah Celebration committee met for the first time post event last week and decided to reinvent itself – the group is now called Celebrate Beerwah and a recruitment drive to fill key roles is now on. “Council is no longer helping to organise the event and the Celebrate Beerwah committee needs to reinvent the way it puts on a party. Recruiting new volunteers is essential to ensuring that great events happen,” said Ana Greenfield from the Hinterland Community Development Organisation of Caloundra who is supporting the group. “Everyone agrees that the event is a must for Beerwah, we just have to tap into people willing to help,” she said. Benefits of the celebration are huge and include strengthening community, increased trade for business, increased memberships for community groups and a more positive community outlook for the town. Roles that need to be filled include fundraising, volunteer coordination, stalls management, council liaison, marketing, logistics, entertainment, school liaison and more. A meeting for all interested parties will be held at the Beerwah Country Women’s Association in Simpson Street at 5.30pm on Wednesday, November 26. Contact Ana for more information on 0407 165 308 or email hcdworker.ana@gmail.com

Some home owners feel that when selling their homes these days because of the high traffic of buyers on the internet that choosing a local agent isn’t always necessary. At the end of the day, the decision is always the home owners and certainly you have to be comfortable and feel that you will best be represented by your agent, but it is also prudent to make sure your agent has a very good local knowledge. Not only in the sense that they know where the schools, shops and public transport are, but also that they are being immersed in the sales and listings of the area on a daily basis. This will not only help them advise you on the best possible market price, but also the best way to actually advertise the property specific to the area. Your agent should be a local expert, they should live, breathe and sleep real estate in your area, and they should at all times throughout the campaign know exactly what is happening two streets and 2kms away. If you have an agent from out of town represent you, there’s a good chance that they will be so focused on the area their office represents that they just might miss the vital information needed to sell your property in the quickest time at the highest possible price. BOQ Beerwah Owner Manager Jeff Willis encouraged everyone to consider donating at least one gift. “For most of us Christmas is a time of celebrating and giving gifts, but for many families it’s a tough time of the year,” Jeff said. “There are many families across Australia living in financial strain and the reality is thousands of children will wake up on Christmas day without a present to unwrap. “I don’t want these children thinking Santa forgot them, which is why we’re giving Santa and his elves a hand this year by turning my branch into a makeshift Santa’s workshop so we can try to help every child get a present this Christmas. “We rely on the generosity of the community so please help keep the magic of Christmas alive for disadvantaged families and visit BOQ Beerwah at Shop 16 Beerwah Market Place Peachester Road, Beerwah throughout November to help the BOQ elves fill our workshop with new, unwrapped toys and books,” Jeff said. This year The Smith Family aims to deliver over 43,500 new toys and 29,000 new books to disadvantaged children Australia wide.

Dr Stephen P Daniels BDSc

To help make this vision a reality, BOQ is aiming to contribute $100,000 worth of toys and books to the Appeal. The Smith Family has indicated there is a particular need for gifts that target the nine-12 year old age group. All gifts donated to BOQ will be collected from BOQ branches, stored by Decipha and then delivered to the Smith Family distribution centres by Toll Priority part of the Toll Group. The Smith Family’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr Lisa O’Brien says that the ongoing Appeal partnership with BOQ had been invaluable. “Thanks to the support of BOQ and generous Australians, we will be able to deliver toy and book packs to thousands of disadvantaged children who currently receive our education and learning support throughout the year. “The gifts will be packaged into parcels and delivered to families by volunteers the week before Christmas. I would like to thank BOQ Beerwah for their involvement this year, and for their support engaging the community in our appeal,” Dr O’Brien said.

Before Beerwah Village

The official opening of the new Beerwah Village, which incorporates a number of historic images as part of the new structure is happening next Monday. This has prompted us at GCNews to chat to a number of long-time locals about the area in days gone past. This week we are introducing our series with a story based on a conversation with June Wimberley about the Wimberley family’s retail history in Simpson Steet… The Wimberley family come from a long line of retailers. Originally from Goomeri located in the South Burnett region, Charles Albert Wimberley ran a profitable family-run general store until the sale of the business in the mid 1940s. Charles had three sons (Charlie, Harold and Arthur) who followed in his footsteps and went on to establish successful retail ventures throughout South East Queensland.

After the sale of the Goomeri family store in 1946, Charles Montague Wimberley (Charlie) and his wife Ellen were enjoying a camping holiday in Mooloolaba. Their old family friend (who had been the station master in Goomeri before becoming station master at Beerwah) mentioned that there was “a nice little shop on the corner in Beerwah that would suit them down to the ground.” The business was owned by Fannie Whitmee and she had previously resisted offers on the sale of the store because “she didn’t like the people.” Fortunately she liked Charlie, and the Wimberley’s commenced trading on December 2, 1946. The main business was groceries and everything was packed by hand. Charlie and Ellen had two sons, (Randall who was born in 1926) and Noel (born 1927). In 1949, Noel joined the family business and the store started to stock drapery items. In the early 1950s, business was booming and Charlie wanted to think about retiring so he asked Randall to come home from where he was working overseas near Singapore as an engineer on a Shell oil tanker. In 1953 he joined the family business and, bringing his engineering skills and world experience to the family store, set about expanding the hardware and building supply side of the business. During the 1950s (before the advent of kit homes) there were about six local builders

By Sonia Clark

and Beerwah was surrounded by thriving farms of tobacco, pineapples and citrus as well as a successful forestry industry. All the builders, farmers and their workers shopped locally at Wimberley’s store and business was so good that a branch store was opened up in Peachester. This was mainly to save people coming down the range on what was then an unsealed and slightly treacherous dirt road. In June of 1953, Randall first met a young lass called June Cobb at the Queen Coronation Ball held at Glideaway Hall, Caloundra. Politely declining Randall’s offer of a lift home on his Vespa that night, the couple met again the following month at the opening of the Eudlo Hall extension and this time he had a Morris Minor. June accepted his offer of a lift and the couple were married on April 19, 1954. The married couple moved to their new home on Simpson Street where June still lives today. The 1960s saw a period of rapid expansion for the Wimberley business. In 1965 Randall and Noel bought their parents’ store and the small home that was next to it was moved up the road towards Beerwah Parade. A new building was built right next to the original shop that allowed an extension of the existing grocery business as well as a separate drapery store. This extension heralded the start of self service grocery shopping. Behind this new building a big shed was allocated for the hardware side of the business which continued to go from strength to strength.

During the mid 1970s, it became apparent that more space was needed, so an additional house block was purchased next to the extended building. The old drapery store became a standalone hardware store and a new larger drapery store was constructed on the new neighbouring site, opening for business in August 1976. Each of the three Wimberley’s retail departments (grocery, hardware and drapery) now had their own shopfront. During this same year, Mitre 10 invited Randall to join their hardware group. While the hardware and drapery stores were succeeding, the grocery side of the family business was not doing as well. With thoughts of possible closure, the Wimberleys appointed an experienced grocery manager, Don Murphy, to run the store, allowing Randall to concentrate on running the hardware store, with Noel focussing on the drapery. Don proved to be a major asset to the company – he transformed and modernised

the grocery store and in 1977, the store was relaunched as a ‘supermarket’ under the name ‘Supa Valu’. The stores flourished and the grocery side of the family business went from strength to strength. During the early 1980s, the hardware store expanded further and a garden centre was installed. The year 1986 marked 40 years of trading for the Wimberleys in Beerwah and the milestone was marked with a massive three store birthday sale. One of the celebration highlights involved a giant cake in the shape of Queensland, cut by original employee Les Howard and the first customer to shop at Wimberley’s way back in 1946, Gordon Palmer. As the supermarket continued to prosper, it became apparent that larger premises would be required. As such, the next housing block next to the drapery site was purchased and plans for a purpose-built supermarket were put in place.

In December 1992 a brand new Wimberley’s supermarket store opened under the banner of ‘Foodtown’ and the original grocery store was eventually taken over by Retravison. Randall died in February, 1996 in the year that marked the 50th year of trading; no doubt he would have been proud of his family’s achievements. This amazing trade milestone of 50 years was marked on August 24 with great fanfare across the stores and a major prize giveaway of an around the world trip. After Randall’s passing, Noel and June, along with key managers and others, incorporated into the Wimberley group. In 1997, the drapery store was closed and remodelled into a number of smaller premises and further plans to extend the supermarket were made. In 1999, Franklins took over the store. Noel Wimberley passed away in August, 2013 and June Wimberley continues to live in the Beerwah family home and be an active and longstanding member of the community.

with Senior Sergeant Bruce Duck With Acting Senior Sergeant Bob Martin Dispute Resolution The Dispute Resolution Centres are a free, confidential and impartial mediation service that handles a range of issues. Often they are conflicts between neighbours over things such as trees, boundaries, children and noise. Mediators don’t tell people what to do, give advice or decide who is right; they just assist both parties to come to an agreement by guiding them through a structured process. You can find lots of helpful hints about dealing with disputes at www.justice.qld.gov.au/justiceservices/dispute-resolution.

Party Season

Coming into the Christmas and New Year season is a good time to remind people of the laws in regard to out-of-control events. It is always helpful to let your neighbours know if you are planning to have a party, and if possible to give them a contact number so they can let you know if they have any concerns. You can also register your party with Party Safe (www.police.qld.gov.au/online/Registeran-Event.htm) which lets police know who the responsible person is at the event if we are called to attend.

The most common reason for police to attend is a noise complaint. Many people think there is a cut off time for loud music; in fact the law is that noise at any time must be reasonable, although neighbours may be less likely to complain during daylight hours. Unfortunately sometimes parties can get out of hand and it is important to note that the out-ofcontrol event legislation applies to any gathering of 12 people or more. If even some of the people at the event damage property, trespass onto neighbouring properties, throw items that could injure someone, obstruct traffic or commit a number of other relatively minor offences, then the party may be declared an out-of-control event. Penalties for organising the event can be as much as $18,000 or three years imprisonment and similar penalties apply for being part of the event. If you are convicted of any of the offences you may also be ordered to pay for some of the cost of police attending the event. As always, stay safe and consider other people and their property.

Living that fine line between action and relaxation Some people prefer a coastal lifestyle with all the hustle and bustle, and some of us prefer a more relaxed country lifestyle with lots of space to live, breathe and relax. There are advantages to both but it can be quite difficult to find that perfect balance where you have room to do your own thing on acreage yet be close enough to enjoy the restaurants and amenities of the coastal strip. If that sounds like you then perhaps you should

have a look at Palmview Forest. Palmview Forest is located near Aussie World and boasts easy access to the shops at Sippy Downs (5 minutes away) and Mooloolaba’s coastal strip (15 minutes away) yet the blocks average an impressive 3000m2 – five times larger than typical home blocks. And they are easy on the budget with an average price of just under $300,000. With blocks this size, home owners have a lot of scope, to make the most of their lifestyle choices. This could mean putting up a shed with attitude, running a chook pen, having a great veggie patch or garden, or putting in your own tennis court. The estate itself is spread into small community pockets with lush green-belts dividing them. These bands of environmental reserve deliver that breath of fresh air that only country-living and bushland can. Palmview Forest has a sales office that is open seven days a week from 10.00am through to 4.00pm.

Glass House Mountain resident Jean Piva is being honoured for an incredible 50 years of service as a JP (Justice of the Peace). Jean originally came to be a JP when she and her husband Elio (Bluey) were the licensees of the North Queensland Crown Hotel at Home Hill, Burdekin Shire. During election times, the politicians would visit the hotel, and through this connection, as well as attending the local cattle sales where Jean and her husband held the liquor licence, Jean was originally nominated by the Hon Peter Delamothe. On September 3, 1963, Jean went to the local courthouse and was sworn in. The majority of the work at the time involved signing documents and warrants. In 1966, Jean and Bluey moved to Bribie Island where they took over what was then called Hotel Bribie. Jean continued her JP work whilst owning the hotel which was renovated and renamed the ‘Blue Pacific Hotel Motel – it’s still a family owned business today. The family moved to Glass House Mountains in 1977 and Jean continued with her

JP/ Commissioner of declarations work. Congratulations Jean, who in her early 80’s is still offering this invaluable community service today.

Why is December 31 so important to homeowners and small business operators? Electricity bills for your house or business are becoming higher each year and soon you may have to sell your furniture, or some of it, to meet the cost. At that time you will decide that you have to take control of this spiralling charge. But then you remember you are in Queensland, the Sunshine State, so free solar electricity is available in abundance. But oh no! You cannot buy a system that is large enough to produce the energy you need … because Energex is about to pull back on the size of solar systems for homeowners. And you will have to spend about $2,000 extra buying a gadget (a zero limiting meter) that fits on to your solar system. What does this $2,000 gadget do? It makes sure that any surplus electricity you might produce does not go into the grid. It won’t matter whether or not you only have enough

surplus electricity left over to operate a 10watt globe, you will still have to spend that money to keep it out of the grid. Help me – please! Will you become the householder or business owner (leased or owned premises makes no difference) described above? You don’t have to … it’s easy to help yourself. All you need to do is at least talk to us before midDecember, before the changes take place. It’s that simple. You have a year before you have to buy a system, but you must register with us now.

Winners are grinners These two happy people insisted on waiting for the latest special BYD solar panels to arrive. They are quite difficult to get, but they waited AND GUESS WHAT? They are generating MUCH more electricity with their special BYD solar panels than the average daily Gino and Bronwyn of Caloundra electricity generation expected of 26kWh per day. Bronwyn, who is a meticulous record keeper said “…even on a cloudy and rainy day, we made 21.4kWh per day, and on a sunny day we had generated 33.8kWh by 3.30pm. Another sunny day I have recorded a 32kWh day and on a partly cloudy but little bit of sun we generated 24.7kWh”. Gino and Bronwyn both agreed that waiting for the special BYD solar panels was well worth it. So now Gino’s neighbour, Bob, has installed a duplicate system and getting similar results. BYD is a Warren Buffet company and was judged the #1 Technology company in the WORLD, yes in the WORLD, with Apple coming in at 2nd place, 2010. To the team at All Energy HQ no other solar manufacturer has EVER been ranked so high. So don’t buy ordinary panels that cost almost the same, because on Gino and Bronwyn’s experience (and of many, many electricians) who have installed them, the amount of electricity generated may NEVER reach the BYD special panel output.

kW 5

And another thing … BYD.com and Warren Buffet – if you haven’t Googled them yet, you have a treat ahead of you. Find out why this Chinese company is manufacturing in America and employing Americans – that’s a new approach! People who say they don’t want anything made in China, just don’t want anything. Within a couple of years, Australians will be driving BYD all-electric cars and using BYD allelectric buses. This is the same technology used in the HQ Energy Hub, solar storage battery. Talk to us about how a BYD solar storage battery can save you money.

As one electrician put it

Andrew from Solar Inspirations

I installed a 4140kW system and it peaked at 5025kWh. BYD are definitely the best value for money panel I have installed, and I have installed more than 12 different brands of panels

Cheap solar systems

Cheap solar systems – yes, we can buy cheap panels and inverters too, so why get an out of towner who may never come back if you have a problem to supply you? Deal with a local, selling solar since 1989. But for just a little extra you can have panels and inverters that perform as Bronwyn and Gino declare. Guess what! Bronwyn and Gino should have their solar system paid for much quicker, because of their such high performing panels, than people who paid just a bit less with cheap solar systems. There is only 1 solar manufacturer in the WORLD which has EVER been judged the No.1 Technology company. That technology is what is causing the winners to be grinners. Good solar lasts 37 plus years. That is 13,500 plus days YOUR solar system could be earning or saving YOU more than a cheap system – the extra cost, may be 2 cents a day, for peace of mind.

Bankfoot House Miss Australia apron inspires Caloundra Embroiderers

An 80-year-old apron in the Bankfoot House collection has inspired the Caloundra Embroiderers to create their own personal designs and present the aprons to the Friends of Bankfoot House for inclusion in the collection. Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said she would like to personally thank the Caloundra Embroiderers for donating the beautiful aprons, which were inspired by viewing the 1934 Miss Australia apron during a visit to Bankfoot House. “Although the original apron was never embroidered, working this calico apron would probably have been a project for Clementina Burgess who lived all her life at Bankfoot House,” Cr McKay said. Christine Holmes from Caloundra Embroiderers said her group had seen the Miss Australia apron on a visit to Bankfoot House. “I was very inspired to copy the pattern as a project for our members,” she said. “The design was traced onto acid-free paper by two members using white gloves to protect the fabric of the original. “Our members worked at their own pace and used their own choice of colours and style of embroidery. “The embroidered aprons were on display at the Caloundra Embroiderers 20th anniversary celebrations.” “The Friends of Bankfoot House attended the celebrations to talk to the visitors about Bankfoot House,” Ms Holmes said. “We are extremely proud our personally created aprons will become part of the Bankfoot House collection and hope visitors will enjoy them for many years to come.” The original apron and the embroidered aprons will be available for viewing on council’s Art and Heritage Collections catalogue.

Contributed by Jenny Morris About 40 members of the Glasshouse Country View Club with their guests enjoyed the Melbourne Cup luncheon at Club Glasshouse and had a wonderful day. Our first mission of the day was to choose our morning tea before being creative and making our own hats. Some people came up with some great ideas. Out of our group Debbie Mooney created our ‘Best Hat’ and Lyn Moss was judged as ‘The Best Dressed’. After all of this we had a delicious lunch and watched the running of the Melbourne Cup to see if we were winners. Our thanks go to the staff of Club Glasshouse for making this an enjoyable day. As the year is nearly over, please think about helping out on the committee next year, as nominations are due in at our next luncheon on November 19. If you have any questions about the positions don’t hesitate to ask any of the current committee, and they will help you. For those who don’t know about the View Club, we are a ladies club and we have a luncheon once a month at the Glasshouse Sports Club and a monthly outing. We raise money for the Smith Family and are also involved with the Learning for Life program. Check out our club on www.view.org.au/1645. html. Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said the 2015 Heritage Calendar is a wonderful collaboration between Council’s Cultural Heritage Services Unit and Sunshine Coast community museums and other organisations. This year’s calendar is themed The Home Front 1914-1918 in commemoration of the centenary of World War 1 and captures daily life on the home front. It was during these years the Australian spirit of volunteering flourished. A number of local community Glass House Mountains Hall 1916 organisations have contributed images for the 2015 calendar including the Glass House Mountains Community Hall Committee, Landsborough Museum, Peachester History Committee, and the Bankfoot House Collection. To purchase a copy of the 2015 Heritage Calendar visit your local Sunshine Coast Library branch, Caloundra Regional Gallery, selected local museums or via Council’s library website. “This calendar showcases a sample of the heritage collections on the Sunshine Coast, said Cr McKay. “Council thanks the heritage organisations and private individuals for their contribution to this commemorative calendar. “At just $7.50 the calendar will be a great Christmas stocking filler idea for those who have everything or an interest in the region’s cultural heritage,” said Cr McKay.

School News Camp Day without the camping Contributed by Andrea Balcombe Students from Years 4 to 7 from Peachester School have headed off to Coolum for their three day camp, leaving the junior school to simulate their own Camp Day. The students cooked damper in the school kitchen, challenged themselves putting up tents, competed in a scavenger hunt, got drenched throwing soggy

sponges and created some wacky weavings. Lunch was a feast of treats contributed by all and smiles were worn all day. Thanks to the teachers of Peachester for making every day a unique experience.

Day for Daniel

Landsborough State School staff and students wore red on Day for Daniel recently. Red is the colour Daniel was wearing when he disappeared and it’s now the symbolic colour for child safety education. The school collected gold coin donations for the Daniel Morcombe Foundation to help them continue the great work they do to make the community safer for children. 'Wear Red & Educate' is the theme of Day for Daniel, so child safety awareness was a major focus at the school on the day. The Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Curriculum strives to empower children to 'Recognise, React and Report' if they feel something is not right. Students participated in group discussions, read books and watched DVDs relating to child safety issues. School Chaplain, Linda Whysall, conducted a colouring-in competition to coincide with Day for Daniel. During the lunch break, she also decorated student's faces in red-themed face paint designs. Linda said, "the Day for Daniel is an ideal opportunity to talk to people about child safety. Students are able to learn, in a fun and interactive way, the necessary skills to protect themselves from harm."

Environment celebrated

The Caboolture Montessori School celebrated Environment Day on Friday, October 31 with special guests including the Acting Mayor of Moreton Bay Regional Council, Cr Mike Charlton and Minister for the Environment, Andrew Powell. Class environmental activities were followed by the opening of the Community Garden with the ribbon-cutting by school parent, volunteer, Board Member and leader of the Green Thumbs gardening group, Mrs Helen Spry. Shae from the Sea Lions class presented the Minister with letters from students about ways of helping stop plastic going into waterways and hurting wildlife. A beautiful butterfly release from ‘Bribie Butterfly Volunteers’ completed the ceremony following with a morning tea which was shared with School Grandparents and a visit from RSL Care Caboolture. The opening of the School’s community garden is a school initiative, teaching the students about empathy and environmental respect through hands-on experiences. The school will be holding an open day on Saturday, November 15 from 9.00am – 12.00noon, if you would like to attend there will be half hourly tours throughout the morning, which you will need to pre-register for by phoning the school 5495 5877. Recently approximately 500 students, parents and teachers from Beerwah State School walked three laps of the school oval to support the annual Day for Daniel. Already wearing red in their full school uniform, the children were encouraged to accessorise wearing something additional red. The children also participated in a colouring competition reminding them of the message from the Daniel Morcombe Foundation of 'Keeping kids safe'.

Koala Action Inc.

Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital will be celebrating its 10th anniversary in November, marking a significant milestone in the continuation of Steve Irwin’s legacy. As the main project of Steve and Terri’s charity Wildlife Warriors, the wildlife hospital has evolved into a beacon of wildlife conservation, not only treating sick, injured and orphaned wildlife, but also educating and inspiring visitors to make a difference to our natural world through conservation. More than 53,000 wildlife patients have been treated at the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital during its 10 years of operation. Birds and koalas are the main species admitted, however all kinds of native Australian wildlife come through their doors including sea turtles, snakes, lizards, kangaroos, echidnas, bats, possums, frogs and more. The original wildlife hospital was opened by Steve and Terri in 2004 in a small avocado packing shed, in honour of Steve’s mother Lyn Irwin, a passionate wildlife rehabilitator. However the demand to treat wildlife patients continued to grow, and as a result, a brand new, bigger facility was built in 2008 and it is now renowned as the largest and busiest wildlife hospital in the world. Fast facts about the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital: • In the period known as trauma season, up to 100 wildlife emergency calls are received daily

Sunshine Coast Uni to fight blindness in koalas University of the Sunshine Coast microbiologists will soon be at the forefront of cutting edge studies into how chlamydia causes blindness in koalas. Dr Adam Polkinghorne and Professor Peter Timms – who recently led the world’s first successful field trial of a vaccine against chlamydia in koalas – recently gained an ARC Discovery Project grant of $458,600 for this separate but associated research project. The news has delighted the USC academics, who will be teaming with other scientists from University of Sydney, University of Technology Sydney and the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, for this work. Dr Polkinghorne said chlamydial infection of the eyes was a significant cause of disease and death in koalas and had contributed to the ongoing decline of the native animal. “We aim to evaluate whether differences in the infecting Chlamydia strains or the koala immune response are associated with the outcome of chlamydial ocular infection,” he said. “Basically, what we’re looking at is the biology behind why some koalas are better than others at withstanding this disease. “If we can get a better understanding of how some koalas make an effective response

to chlamydia, we will be able to feed this information directly into further enhancing the efficacy of our prototype koala chlamydia vaccine.” Dr Polkinghorne said the research project would significantly expand knowledge of the koala immune system and help benefit all koala conservation efforts. USC’s Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Roland De Marco congratulated Dr Polkinghorne and Professor Timms on receiving the ARC Discovery Project grant. “This grant is testimony of the excellence and standing of their research group as a national and world leader in this field of research,” he said. “This research project is important, significant, worthwhile and incredibly exciting.”

Dehydration and a diet lacking in fibre, and certain illnesses, are a major cause of constipation and problems with digestion. The Bowen moves are applied gently over the abdomen, adjusting the pressure to suit the level of pain. This is followed by a wait of a few minutes, allowing the moves to take effect. Share your lights for joy not judging

By Lea Parkes Recently I was chatting to Jodie Pember of Glass House Mountains IGA and she was telling me she had started organising her Christmas light display for this year. Jodie and her family have decorated their front yard with Christmas lights for the past seven years, with the display growing a little each year. As GCNews organises the ‘Lighting Up Glasshouse Country’ competition each year – I was surprised that Jodie had never let us know about her lights. We don’t do it to win a prize, we enjoy doing it and like to share it with our neighbours and other locals, Jodie said. At GCNews we’ve always thought that the idea of being judged and part of a competition is what puts many people off entering. So this year we are really keen to encourage people who are happy to share their lovely light displays with the rest of us, but don’t want to be part of the official competition, to let us know their addresses just for our ‘public viewing’ list we publish throughout December. So if you are like Jodie and enjoy doing the display and just sharing it with others, let us know and we can spread the word. Give Sarah (our Lighting Up Glasshouse Country) Co-ordinator a call on 5438 7445 or email her on reception@gcnews.com.au with your address and she will happily include it as (not for judging).

with BraxtontoTurnage Five easy ways to add fruits and vegetables dinner

of Chiropractic Fruits and vegetables contain vitamins, minerals, and otherDoctor nutrients that are essential for good health. That’s one reason why a plant-based diet that includes lots of fruits and vegetables can lower your risk of developing life-threatening diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and some cancers. And when you pile on the produce, there’s less room for the unhealthy foods. Here are five easy ways to work more produce into dinner. • Roast vegetables. Roasting is a great way to let the deep, rich flavours of vegetables shine through. Bake cut vegetables at 190° C for 20 to 25 minutes or until they’re lightly browned. You can roast any vegetable — from mushrooms, onions, eggplant, and zucchini to tomatoes, broccoli, and carrots — so don’t limit yourself. Enjoy roasted veggies as a side dish or toss them into pasta dishes and other recipes. • Poach veggies in low-sodium chicken broth and white wine. To poach, boil enough liquid to cover the vegetables. When it boils, add the vegetables. Turn down the heat to just below boiling and cook the vegetables for about five to seven minutes, until they’re brightly coloured and tender-crisp. Add garlic, basil, or tarragon for a flavour bonus. To retain nutrients, keep a watchful eye on the pot, or set a timer so you don’t overcook. • Smuggle fresh cut vegetables into main dishes. Try adding mushrooms, capsicum, zucchini, onions, or carrots into pasta sauce, casseroles, soup, stews, scrambled eggs, and chili. • Have a salad with dinner most days. Stock your salad with dark green leafy lettuce and toss in petite peas, tomatoes, onions, celery, carrots, and capsicum. As an added benefit, starting meals with a salad can help you consume fewer calories at the meal, as long as the salad is no more than 100 calories. A healthful salad consists of about three cups of dark green lettuce, 1/2 cup carrots, a tomato, 1/4 cucumber, and 1 1/2 tablespoons of low-calorie dressing. • Choose fruit — fresh or frozen, stewed or baked — for dessert. It all to toward Life Chiropractic, Turner Park quota. Shopping Centre, Beerwah Ph: 5494 0499 Adjust counts your daily produce Dried fruits are healthy but high in calories, so eat them sparingly.

Lies, lies, lies The Bankfoot House families’ association with the local primary school goes back as far as 1905. This is when the original application to the Qld Department of Public Instruction was lodged to establish the Glass Mountains Provisional School. Two of the four members of the Building Committee who signed the application were William Smith Burgess and Charles John Ferris. Despite the provisional school’s temporary closure between 1907 and 1909, when average attendances fell below 13, the school was reopened in 1910 as the Glass Mountains State School. Among the enrolments at that time were the two daughters of William Smith Burgess, namely Mary Isabella (aged seven) and Janet Elsie (aged six). Their brothers, William Isaac (aged five) enrolled in 1912 and Kenneth (aged five) in 1915. The school exercise books completed by Mary Burgess remain in the Bankfoot House Collection and are a strong indicator of the teachings of the day. For example, history meant learning about the British Empire and Europe, unlike in 2014 where local history is an early focus. Following Mary’s marriage to Jack Ferris, and in her later years returning to live at Bankfoot House, Mary was happy to show children from the local primary schools what domestic life was like in those early days. Janet Elsie (Ellie) Burgess eventually married Jim Fullerton and their daughter Merle Yvonne was a pupil at the school in the 1940s and returned as a teacher in 1956-57. Following Mary’s lead in inviting pupils from local schools to visit Bankfoot House, the Friends of Bankfoot House now provide students with guided tours of the historic house and marvel at some of the questions asked. For example: When shown the old 1905 typewriter they ask ‘where’s the screen?’ When shown a candle mould they suggest it is a hot dog warmer. When asked what might be used in the house that doesn’t require electricity one response was ‘WiFi’.

NBNCo is not dedicated to honest conversations with the Maleny Community. I attended all three NBNCo public meetings. When asked “who can I ‘sue’ regarding future health problems from towers, NBNCo or the landowner?” they refused to answer me and Mal Brough our MP tried to close it down. When asked “can you still assure my safety when you extend another 10 metres upwards with other Telco’s transmitters, and pulsing smart meters?” They diverted my question and refused to answer even when asked twice. When asked “who can I ‘sue’ NBNCo or the landowner for devaluation of my property from a nearby tower?” Mal Brough exclaimed “that’s not a health Issue,” and NBNCo refused to answer even when asked twice. People’s perception of microwave emissions affecting their health, real or not, makes it a health issue Mal. Mal closed down the last ‘health’ meeting on October 16 with about six people still needing answers to important questions. NBNCo reps had had enough and wanted to go home. NBNCo doesn’t want you knowing their towers don’t just emit ‘radiofrequency energy’. They emit microwaves. at 2.3GHz. Microwave ovens operate on 2.4GHz. ARPANSA has verified this. Not Good enough Mal Brough, you’re losing our votes! Dave Handley Mountain View Road Maleny

Why is Council being pressured?

Everyone’s talking about the pressure on council to go with the Hall's Creek development. This proposal has been rejected by council and the community many times over the years. So why the pressure on the council from the State Government? A suspicious person might say it's because Stockland, the owner of the majority of the land, has influenced the Queensland Government to permit the development. Oh, that could not be so; they are honourable people, aren't they? Or are they? I've looked at the Government website to see if Stockland has contributed anything to LNP funds. Nothing is stated. So the question I ask is, in which way has Stockland influenced the State Government on Halls Creek? I see no other explanation for the Government’s pressure on council. Name supplied Mooloolah

We expect political parties to have different values and programs. We accept that, even invite it. As to what they stand for, we want truth and balance so that our democracy, so hard-won, is robust and inclusive. Voters need to understand how the different agendas will affect them. truths, or catch-phrases. Tony Abbott has been blaming Federal and State deficits on Labor’s profligacy and mismanagement for six years. He has never mentioned the effect of the Global Financial Crisis in which Australians lost millions of their savings, and multi-national banks and companies lost trillions. The crashes and failed banks are never mentioned. It is as if these things didn’t happen. The huge incomes of private company executives are invisible; so too certain companies who pay almost no tax on what they earn in Australia. All of Labor’s reforms towards efficiency and fairness were relentlessly attacked by the Coalition and by the big mining companies with money to spend on advertising – which they then claimed as expense. In a sense, Abbott is devaluing the very democracy he orders our armies to defend. There is a rare opportunity to hear the other side of this chapter of history from Wayne Swan, Labor Treasurer of those years, when he comes to Maleny Community Centre on November. Concerns over NBN towers

I am writing to voice my concerns over the planned NBN microwave towers in the Mary Cairncross Avenue area of Maleny. My concerns are around the placement of the towers in a beautiful, some might say iconic, part of the hinterland. Their undoubted impact on property values, health (I am a healthcare professional), disruption to both the locals of this particular area and the community at large, and the blooming tourist industry. Not only that, the expected upload and download speeds will be far inferior to what Optic fibre and even copper wire systems attached to the NBN might deliver. Give us the NBN by all means. I look forward to it. However, not at the expense of my house value, my health, my community, and the superior performance of optic fibre. I will be sending similar comment to my local, state and federal politicians and other involved parties and encourage everyone I know to do the same. Anthony Brown Maleny

Light rail proposed routes on display

Light rail route options through Kawana, Mooloolaba, Maroochydore and Caloundra are now available for public consideration. I am really enthusiastic about the potential benefits of light rail and encourage residents to attend a community information session to learn more about the initial feasibility study findings as well as the route options. Light rail is suggested as one component of an integrated transport strategy for the region that can also help deliver greater benefits to residents in the Hinterland. So don’t miss this opportunity to have a say about the Sunshine Coast’s future—provide your thoughts and comments either in person, by mail or online at www.sclightrail.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au.

Division 5 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council M: 0409 450 726 Improving safety in Mooloolah

Meanwhile in Mooloolah, works have been completed on a 1.8 metre wide concrete pathway along Brandenburg Road, between Fern Gully Place and Viewland Drive, Mooloolah Valley. I know residents will appreciate the increased safety for them to get outdoors and enjoy their local neighbourhoods via foot or bike.

Paget Street name change

Following emergency services reporting delays in responding to the community’s needs due to confusion accessing the requested end of Paget Street, Mooloolah, the name will be changed to Lower Paget Street. I apologise, this will require a few residents to have a slight change of address, but there is an overriding need for community safety – I appreciate their understanding.

Mooloolah Breakfast

Mooloolah welcomed the new Tourism Development Manager for Sunshine Coast Destination Ltd, Susan Maynard to the monthly morning Breakfast last week. Signage promoting Mooloolah was high on the agenda and Susan will continue to consult with the community to progress this project.

Cars for sale on roadsides

A reminder to residents that Council is committed to providing a wellmanaged region that promotes and attracts visitors while ensuring a safe, healthy and attractive environment. Owners of vehicles seen parked on streets, footpaths and in parkland with a ‘for sale’ sign may receive an infringement. Vehicles advertised for sale can be parked on private land (with permission of the owner). See Council’s website for further information.

Enhancing Montville

Works are progressing well on the enhancement of the Montville town centre. In a staged process we are reconstructing three existing driveway areas along Main Street due to paver failures and installing ‘Montville style’ lightpoles to the southern end of the street. The full project is scheduled for completion by year’s end. www.gcnews.com.au

SAY NO TO HALLS CREEK

(This notice is authorised by the Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network (GMAN))

Your State Member of Parliament is asking the community to let them know how you feel about the Halls Creek area being included in the SEQ Regional Plan as an IGA (Identified Growth Area). This is your chance to let them know that you do not want this to happen, by following the steps below: 1. Addressing the following letter to either Mr Powell, PO Box 727, Maleny, or Mr McArdle, PO Box 3998, Caloundra 2. Tick the issue(s) as reason(s) why, and/or add any other concerns you may have 3. Sign and date the letter including your address, put in an envelope addressed to Mr Powell or Mr McArdle 4. Mail it yourself or drop it (no stamp required) into the box available at Glasshouse Country News, Coonowrin Road, Glass House Mountains; Beerburrum Service Centre, Beerburrum; Morris House, Old Landsborough Road, Landsborough; or Kwerky Cafe, Simpson Street, Beerwah Dear Mr._________________________________________ (Member of Parliament) I would like to let you know that I am NOT in favour of Halls Creek being included in the SEQ Regional Plan as an IGA (Identified Growth Area), because:  I do not want to see the inter urban break, the forestry and agricultural land between the Moreton Bay urban border and the urban boundary of the Sunshine Coast, to get any smaller, as it is now a distinct open green space clearly separating urban areas at either end.  I want to remove the added threat to the Pumicestone Passage, a unique and important waterway for many reasons, from more degradation caused by further urban development on its shores. The overall health of the region’s environment and its biodiversity would suffer even more if Halls Creek were developed.  I want to lessen the negative economic impacts which the Halls Creek development and its associated retail precincts would have on the Beerburrum, Glass House Mountains, Beerwah, and Landsborough townships.  I want to see the previous wishes over the past 15 years of the community and the Council on Halls Creek, to remove Halls Creek from the SEQ Regional Plan as an IGA, respected.  Other ______________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________ As our local member, please listen to your constituents who are saying “NO to Halls Creek IGA”. Tips to help older drivers keep their keys

RACQ has released tips for Queensland’s older drivers, as part of a new campaign, to help them feel safe and confident when behind the wheel. The motoring body has released a YouTube video identifying warning signs to look out for and advice for older drivers and their families. RACQ Education Officer David Terry said motorists must be aware of their physical capabilities and how they can affect their driving, particularly if driving is considered the key to their independence. “Some older motorists in particular can feel a little unsure when driving and may avoid certain routes or travelling at certain times of day as their vision and flexibility decrease,” Mr Terry said. “If you’re an older driver and you are concerned about your ability to drive, we recommend visiting your GP. “Many age-related and medical conditions do not mean older drivers have to stop driving altogether, quite often it may be a case of not driving at certain hours, or wearing appropriate eyewear.” In Queensland, drivers over the age of 75, as well as drivers with medical conditions affecting their ability to drive, are required to carry a medical certificate when driving. “RACQ is committed to seeing every Queenslander survive their drive and have developed a number of tools to help older drivers feel more confident,” Mr Terry said. “These include post-licence practical driver assessments, a selfassessment questionnaire and the Years Ahead program to assist older motorists to drive safely for longer. “Fortunately, should an older driver decide to hang up the keys, there are a number of alternative transport options available such as taxis, community shuttle buses and public transport.” Families are encouraged to check in with their loved ones, start the conversation, and if they have any concerns urge them to see their GP. RACQ’s YouTube video ‘When is it time to stop driving?’ can be viewed at http://goo.

Taking care of the future Smorgasbord of diet info confusing older Australians Two-thirds (66%) of Australia’s Over 50s say there is too much conflicting health information about diet and lifestyle, according to new research by Apia, the leading national insurer for over 50s. Apia’s research found that roughly one in five (21%) of older Australians are confused about what they should be eating to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle. David Skapinker, Apia spokesperson, said that while living in the 24-hour news age with information available at our fingertips has undoubtedly improved the quality of life of many, the flipside is the necessity for people to be more selective in the information they use to help lead a healthy and full life. “The media is a major source of information on health and nutrition and every other day there seems to be a new report about the latest diet for optimal health and superfoods for disease prevention, so it’s not surprising that there’s a lot of confusion regarding diet. Over 50s end up not knowing what to eat or what to avoid for their life stage, and it’s increasingly becoming a problem for many,” he commented. Dr Ross Walker, one of Australia’s best-known and most respected health experts, says: “To maintain good health as we age, the key is to eat less, and as natural as possible.” “While there are many diets promoted through the media that promise weight loss, optimal health and vitality, the best thing you can do to maintain a healthy body weight is simply balance the amount of calories consumed through food and drink with the amount of energy your body uses,” he said. “A problem for many of us is that we often eat more food than we need to, and don’t move enough. This is a major health issue for Australians over 50 because as we grow older, our metabolism begins to slow down, making it easier to gain weight.” Dr Walker suggests some simple ways to help ensure you’re eating a healthy diet: “Try eating

off smaller plates to reduce the size of your meals, take it easy on dessert and remember that grazing is an easy way to lose track of the calories you’re taking in. Most importantly, whole foods and anything fresh will always be better for your weight and cardiovascular health.” Dr Walker added: “There’s a lot of evidence that shows that the Mediterranean lifestyle is one of the healthiest ways of life. It boasts a diet rich in natural fats, carbohydrates and red wine, with the biggest meal consumed at lunchtime, followed by a sleep and then hours of manual labour in the afternoon to burn up energy. This is starkly different from our modern way of life where we consume most of our food in the evening and then sit around watching television, when we should be enjoying a sizeable breakfast and lunch, and having our smallest meal at the end of the day.” “It’s important to remember that our body is not like a car, where we inject it with fuel and it gets burned off. In fact, what happens is quite the opposite; if we don’t get rid of fuel straight away it gets laid down as fat.” “For people over 50 a healthy diet not only prevents the likelihood of obesity, heart disease and many other chronic diseases, it provides more energy to do the things they love doing, such as travelling and playing with the grandkids, so they continue to live at their best,” he continued. Dr Walker recommends that the best diet to reduce the risk of age related diseases and stay healthy after 50 includes: • Eating 2-3 pieces of fresh fruit and 3-5 servings of vegetables every day. Anyone eating those amounts will have the lowest risk of cancer and heart disease. • Maximise your intake of fresh whole-foods, as that is the healthiest diet, while incorporating small portions of meat, nuts, olive oil, fish and eggs. • Minimise your intake of processed and white foods including pasta; bread, rice and potatoes.

• Be conscious of your intake of sugary drinks and fruit juice as these are often loaded with sugar and count towards your daily calorie intake. • Combine a nutritious well balanced diet with regular exercise, and most importantly the best drug in the world, happiness! • Your first point of call for advice on diet should be your doctor as everyone’s health is individual so it’s important to get tailored advice. Having the right diet in place can also make a huge difference in the management and treatment of many ailments and diseases. • As we get older it’s vital to have regular preventative checks and stay on top of our health.

Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network The Koel

Last night, about 3.00am, I was woken by the distinctive, repetitive call of the Eastern Koel (Eudynamys orientalis). Many people find the Koel’s loud call annoying, but to me it heralds the coming of summer – and the summer rains. The male Koel, during breeding season, repeats this ascending ‘coo-ee’ or ‘ko-el’, and the female's reply is a repetitive ‘keek-keek-keek-keek’. Also known as the Common Koel, these large noisy birds spend winter in Papua New Guinea and Indonesia and arrive in south-east Queensland in early October to breed, staying until March - April. They belong to the cuckoo family and are brood parasites. This means that they do not build their own nests or incubate their own eggs, but instead lay their eggs in the nests of other birds, such as Red Wattlebirds, Friarbirds and Figbirds. A single egg is laid and when the chick hatches, it pushes all other eggs and hatchlings out of the nest. The male Eastern Koel is distinctive with its black plumage and striking red eyes, while the female (pictured) is glossy brown with white spots on top, and buff-cream underneath, with many fine black bars running across its belly. The young of many brood parasites are coloured to mimic their hosts; Koel chicks are brown like their honeyeater hosts. Eastern Koels feed almost entirely in the canopy of trees on fruits, such as figs, berries, and occasionally insects. They are often seen on the edges of rainforests, along streams and even in suburban gardens. Do you have an hour or two a month to spare? Would you like to learn more about the flora and fauna in your area, and meet new friends? The tubular pink flowers are crimson throated, five petalled and are a stunning feature of this vine. Placing in full sun will ensure prolific flowering. Although naturally a large creeper, regular pruning can create a compact habit, it is also slightly frost tender and copes well in dry situations rarely requiring supplementary watering. The seed pod is woody and splits when mature and contains numerous papery winged seed.

The good wood on tree recycling

As astute consumers and good community citizens, we all are (or should be) aware of the ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ philosophy which has been encouraged now for a number of years. By thinking about what you really need and refusing what you don't, giving items more than one life and disposing of rubbish thoughtfully, you can reduce waste, save money and look after our environment. To reinforce that message, this week is Planet Ark’s National Recycling Week (November 10 – 16). Founded in 1996, National Recycling Week highlights the environmental benefits of re-use and recycling programs, while making participation enjoyable and easy through community events and programs. To find out more information about what practical things you can do, check out their website www.recyclingnearyou.com.au In most of the ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ campaigns, you will hear about recycling your paper and cardboard, what you can do with batteries and printer cartridges, and how you can reduce what goes to landfill. But there is another area where gardeners and landholders can make a big difference which involves trees. When you have to have a tree removed – for whatever reason – instead of just having the trunk chipped up, burnt or dumped, have a think about what other uses that valuable wood could be put to. Graeme Bentley from Bald Knob has been working with locals to help them turn trees into useful timber, and he contacted GCNews to let people know that there is another alternative to the rip, chip, burn option. Graeme – who’s well known father-in-law Nev Anning was a dab hand at working with timber – has a mobile Lucas sawmill and is passionate about timber being one of the world’s few truly renewable resources. “It hurts me badly to see perfectly good trees chipped and destroyed for whatever reason, when they could have been milled where fallen and used to build with or create something useful, or form a timber piece with character and beauty,” Graeme said. He prides himself in his ability to mill a tree while creating very little wastage. “I hate seeing good trees go to waste, and if we can recycle a perfectly good tree into some other perfectly good products, then that’s a win for the property owner and the environment.” There are the obvious benefits to milling a suitable tree trunk and turning it into usable lumber – like saving money on having to buy materials, such as slabs, flooring and decking boards, fence railings and palings, furniture timber, and even tomato stakes. But then there are the not-so-obvious ones as well, like locking up the carbon in the wood for a much longer time than if it were chipped or burnt, or the gratification you get from knowing that the tree has gone to a greater good and you haven’t wasted the 30, 40 or 50 years of growing that it has given you. So next time you have a tree that needs removing, give some consideration to what other uses that tree can be put to – and give Graeme a call on 0408 060 509 to see if he can help you reduce, reuse, recycle.

Peachester and District Horticulture Society

Contributed by Trish Bradford The date and venue for the Christmas Break-Up will be finalised at the next meeting. Members agreed that instead of exchanging gifts, the monetary value from each member would be donated to help struggling farming families out west coping with severe drought conditions. The club will at least match the members’ contributions. John and Pam Innes talked about their visit to the Aspley Garden Club for the club’s Friendship Day. They also spoke about their adventures on their recent bus trip with Ozzie Outback Tours to Cameron’s Corner. The November meeting is our final one for the year. Visitors are welcome to join us at my place on Thursday, November 20 at 9.30am. Bring along your choice of meat for a barbecue lunch, salad ingredients are provided as well as tea and coffee. HANDS OFF HALLS CREEK How long has Halls Creek been considered? Caloundra City and Sunshine Coast Council have considered urban develoment at Halls Creek since the early 2000s and have consistently rejected it as unsuitable. Caloundra South Caloundra City Council agreed to the Caloundra South Development provided at Halls Creek. Do we have to have the Halls Creek IGA? The SEQ Regional Plan requires either the Halls Creek or the Beerwah East IGA to be included. and prefers Beerwah East. This The Halls Creek and Beerwah East IGA including Stocklands land holding at Halls Creek and the protected CAMCOS rail corridor.

Why is Halls Creek in the SEQ Regional Plan? Sunshine Coast Council (and a number of community groups) made submissions on the SEQ Regional Plan calling on the State Government NOT to include the Halls Creek IGA. Stockland made a submission calling on the State Government to include the Halls Creek IGA. The State Government ignored Council and the community and included the Halls Creek IGA.

What can you do? • Write to Andrew Powell MP or Mark McArdle MP and let them know you don’t want

Halls Creek. They have said they want to hear from the community, so don’t be shy.

Attend the community meeting on on Friday 21st of November at 7.00pm in the Landsborough Hall, Old Landsborough Road.

have my say, and do the things I choose... I was then reminded of the freedom that I have that was gained by the humility of Christ and of his dying on the cross. Men who died blindly following orders on a beach in a far off land and a man trusting implicitly in the Father of us all; do we understand what was gained for us when we fail to teach our children trust and hope? When we fail to understand the beauty in brokenness and the amazing lessons of hope that is in sacrifice that was made for us in that the ‘Last Gentlemen’s War’ and by Christ? Soon our thoughts will turn to the holiday season and Christmas. I pray that each one of you is reminded of why we have an opportunity to celebrate such a time.

‘Beauty for brokenness; Hope for despair’ these words from an old hymn came to mind recently when visiting ANZAC Cove and Lone Pine at Gallipoli. Our guide who was very knowledgeable in the history of the area, and of this war, gave me cause to think about the beauty of life and how much we take for granted what it is we have in this life. I believe we often do not understand how fragile our lives are or of the brevity of our days. As I stood at the Australian Memorial in ANZAC Cove I thought of the bravery, the humility of the men who gave their lives for me... for me to live the life I live in a country where I can

Contributed by Jenny Kelly The Beerwah Cup is an annual event played over two days, with a player’s two Nett scores combined to make a total score for the weekend. The winner of the Men’s Beerwah Cup was Graham Black with a total score of 136. Yours truly astounded everyone by taking out the Women’s Division with 147. A big thank you to Schweppes for sponsoring the event, I needed a new pair of shoes. Next Saturday will be a Mixed event so grab a partner and come out for a game. Beerwah Ladies Golf Club

Contributed by Jenny Kelly You will be pleased to know we were able to keep the lawyers at bay and everyone had a fun time for the last of our Men’s Invitation Days. 112 players laughed and cried their way through 18 holes of Tiger Stableford for trophies kindly donated by lady members Jan Corfield and Marie Norton. The best team, with a score of 81 Stableford points was Karen Kemp and Paul Barnard. They were followed by Kevin and Marie Norton on 76 points. Second runners up were Joan Fletcher and Leno Ellul with Heather Henn and Billy James coming in third runners up. Nearest to the pins went to Kevin and Marie on number 2, Col Penney and Sonia Kenway on both 5 and 18, and Grace Ferguson was closest on the 16th. The ball rundown went to 59 points. With the storms that came rolling through, hopefully the course got a much needed drink. Let’s hope Huey continues to be kind to us. Until next week, stay safe and good golfing.

Two nuns were at a shopping centre. As they passed by the bottle-o, one nun said to the other, "wouldn't a nice cool beer or two taste wonderful on a hot summer evening?" The second nun answered, "indeed it would, sister, but I would not feel comfortable buying beer, since I am certain it would cause a scene at the checkout stand." "I can handle that without a problem," the other nun replied, and she picked up a six-pack and headed for the check-out. The cashier had a surprised

SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 As Neptune and Chiron now both go direct a heart-centred healing comes to you that will soothe toxic wounds and old patterns that have been bought up into consciousness for release. Mars and Pluto together are setting off heavy duty revolutionary powers. This week if not careful health may suffer! SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 Jupiter moving through the powerful sign of Leo works well for you in your zone of freedom, travel, and world exploration. Maybe you will be enlightened about a new career perspective. It’s time not to be cramped in old judgments but be prepared to have your beliefs heard and your freedom granted. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 A conglomeration of planets including happy Venus with the Sun and Mercury, soften any cold hard tactics that Saturn has handed you. This means you might feel such a blossoming effect that you are ready to splurge on friends and social occasions on ways you haven’t for years! Be rid of guilt. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 When you are not working obsessively you may turn to your friends for fun, rather than a nervously anxious spouse or needy family member. There is a chance you are going to be well blessed when Mars and Jupiter combine to give you a mystery present this week! Perhaps it’s contacts with top people.

PISCES February 20 – March 20 It could feel like that the time has come to make a choice. The problem is that under the current stars one door may open, but another probably has to close. If any people around you are getting touchy under a Mars Pluto conjunction, don’t let people take advantage of your kind and giving nature now. ARIES March 21 – April 20 A business partner may be demanding that you toe the line especially when the authority planet Saturn conjoins Venus, the Sun and Mercury so that may lead to an economic crunch. Perhaps you have been through enough resentful restrictions and can sit down together, coming up with a new budget. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 This could be a pivotal week for you when cool, calculating Saturn, joins up with Venus, your ruler, also the Sun and Mercury bringing about a valuable union you would like to preserve. From last week’s full Moon being an emotional trigger and you may finally this week reach your swinging rope’s end. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 Your opinions are off the mark this week and may be disruptive to all your activities. What gets said is exaggerated and information possibly compromised. Work or health responsibilities could weigh heavily or somebody could require a lot of attention from you. Tension and jealousy about money.

CANCER June 22 – July 22 Although a long-time friend may supply the support you need it is possible that this love agenda is wrapped up in a financial matter. Saturn might send you cold rules and regulations, meaning lockdown your expense accounts. You may be called upon to prove your love through unusual events at this time. LEO July 23 – August 22 You may feel that you have finally secured that stable roof with security over your head and thereby creates all that you have been craving. With Neptune and Chiron moving direct in Pisces sign your dreams of having enough funds for any reconstruction may come true. Someone’s feelings are icy cold. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 Be careful not to let any past experience dominate your thinking. You learn a lot from the past but you are now to move beyond it as it is time to break new ground since Neptune an Chiron are moving direct away from old wounds. You will breathe more easily and experiment with new methods. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 A financial matter requires serious commitment and restrained responsibility to secure gains as a loss may be possible if you fall into a victim role. This is time to heed your maturity when facing rocky times regarding serious financial purchase. Some planets indicate there could be jealousy or envy re money.

"We use beer for washing our hair," the nun said, "back at our nunnery, we call it catholic shampoo.” Without blinking an eye, the cashier reached under the counter, pulled out a package of pretzel sticks, and placed them in the bag with the beer.
