Hi Everyone... In my job I often get a little jaded about the reasons behind special ‘days’ promoted in material I receive. They can be everything from International Steak Sandwich Day to Talk Like a Pirate Day. However, there was one very special day in our community last week that I believe is very important and that is International Volunteer Day. As part of the celebrations, our state Member for Glass House Andrew Powell hosted a special morning tea to thank about 40 volunteers who were nominated by local community groups for the contributions they make to our communities. Listening to the incredible work undertaken by the many volunteers was really inspiring, and there were many wonderful examples of their work. However, one who really impressed me was Trudy Long from Elimbah. Trudy has been the secretary/treasurer for the organising committee of the Beerwah Charity Sports Day for almost the whole 47 years that the event has been operating! Thanks to all who give up their time and energy to make our community a better place, and top job Trudy – you are amazing.

All eyes on Forest Watch Forest Watch is a joint initiative providing a vital link between local police and forest communities to tackle forest crime and improve community safety. The crime prevention campaign has been launched by HQPlantations and Beerwah Police, supported by Neighbourhood Watch, Police Link, Triple Zero and Crime Stoppers Queensland. The campaign is targeting unlawful activities in local forests including hooning, illegal dumping, drugrelated crimes and arson. HQPlantations community engagement facilitator Stephanie Hunt said forest neighbours recently asked how they could help address these antisocial behaviours and the answer was “if you see something, say something”. However, reporting suspicious behaviour often involves separate task forces or different state government agencies, depending on the nature of the activity. “Our neighbours tell us it can be confusing to know who to call when it’s not a Triple Zero emergency,”

Stephanie said. “Beerwah Police have made it easier by providing a single contact point for reporting suspicious behaviour in local forests, even if it’s outside the station’s usual boundary,” she said. The beerwah.station@police.qld.gov.au reporting link provides a direct point of contact between local residents or forest visitors and police. Alternatively, people can use the crime reporting contact list inside the Forest Watch brochure to contact the relevant agency, depending on the nature of the activity or if they would prefer to report anonymously. Beerwah Police officer Senior Constable Susan Lowndes suggests keeping the Forest Watch brochure handy and using the form on the back to record and report relevant information. “Forest Watch doesn’t replace calling 000 in an emergency as it may be several days before a report can be investigated,” Senior Constable Lowndes said. “Most importantly, please don’t do anything that might put you or your family at risk to gather this information,” she said. Anyone who didn’t receive a Forest Watch brochure with this week’s Glasshouse Country & Maleny News is invited to collect one from the Beerwah Police Station or call HQPlantations on 5438 6666.

Open Day brings community behind the fence The crew at Hanson Glasshouse Quarry welcomed more than 380 people to a community open day on Saturday, November 24. Quarry manager Chris Wilson said the quarry was in a small community, so it was important to know and respect its neighbours. “The open day was a chance to show the community what we do behind our fence and to have the honest conversations that are part of constructive relationships,” Chris said. Visitors took a quarry bus tour, hosted by Chris and maintenance supervisor Mick Fehlhaber, who gave a detailed commentary on the site’s geological history, the high quality of the resource and talked about a typical quarry work day. “A highlight for many was a talk about blasting with mine planner, Tylah Drochmann at the geology tent. Tylah and I talked to lots of people about the blasts that are set by our contractors, who bring explosives onsite for blasts only and leave none here,” Chris said. “We were proud to be complimented on the neatness of our pit, haul roads and stockpiles. “We discussed the quarry’s future and talked about the supply of more than 70% of our hard rock to build local houses, hospitals, schools, roads and infrastructure. “Hanson’s sales cap was also discussed. The quarry has voluntarily suspended sales, having sold the volume of hard rock it can transport in a calendar year.”

More questions surface around breeding kennels
DENTURE CLINIC
More questions have emerged about the Landsborough site for the proposed major dog breeding facility and kennels. The Department of State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning has formally notified the applicant that the development requires a deeper level of enquiry. As the proposal accesses Steve Irwin Way – a statecontrolled road – the department investigates the impacts it could have on its road asset. Specifically, the department has asked why the developers haven’t utilised access from Amigh Road rather than off Steve Irwin Way. Planning rules require local roads to be used if available and suitable. It will be difficult for Amigh Road locals to assess the impact this may have on them, as the development report makes no mention of traffic flows or volumes. Considering the proposal doubles the puppy breeding capacity of the developer’s existing property and includes a very large kennelling facility, Amigh Road residents could assume that the level of traffic along their road would substantially increase. A reason the developer – Diamond Valley Kennels – has given for the move is that the existing road access is unsuitable. A statement published by the developer states that a road safety audit identified a number of road safety issues with the existing access along Ratcliffe Road at Mooloolah – including “poor road delineation”, “narrowness of road pavement”, “lack of passing bays on single lane sections”, “a number of minor
Brian Stuart-Nairne
pavement issues”, and “numerous non-frangible hazards close to the road (large trees, power poles and culvert ends)”. “We are increasingly concerned that it is only a matter of time until a serious accident occurs along this road,” the statement reads. Those living along Amigh Road may recognise some of the same issues with their road. The department also asks that a thorough traffic impact assessment be undertaken, which includes significant information lacking in the original application. This includes an analysis of the site access/Steve Irwin Way intersection and the intersection of Camp Koongamoon Environment and Recreation Centre access/Steve Irwin Way to ensure that any intensification of use does not create a safety hazard for the intersections as a whole. The developer is also asked to provide some basic missing information, such as the hours of operation, proposed employment numbers, trip generation for the different uses on the subject site, trip distribution and when the peak traffic generation of the site occurs during the morning and afternoon peak of Steve Irwin Way. The developer is then asked to identify the mitigation measures necessary to address any potential safety hazard or worsening of operating conditions from the proposed development on the state-controlled road network. The due date for providing the requested information to the department is March 1, 2019.

Taking Xmas Orders for Ham, Turkey, Pork & More!
Gary and Julie from Meat U @ Home are pleased to announce that they are now open for business and taking orders for Christmas. Located in the Beerwah Marketplace next to The Healthy Guru, their first business day last Wednesday saw a steady stream of customers through the doors, some even thanking them for being open as they had missed having a local butcher in town. Julie said they loved being in Beerwah and ‘meating’ the locals. “Our first customer today came in and ordered his Christmas ham and it’s been a very busy day since then,” Julie said. “Everyone has just been so lovely. It’s such a lovely town and it’s got a great vibe. Coming from a small town ourselves, we feel right at home,” she said. Locals will also see some familiar faces behind the counter with Mick and Connor from the previous butcher shop working with them. Julie would love locals to come in and let them know if there is something in particular they are after that may not be in stock yet. If you don’t see it in the window, please ask. To help locals get their Christmas orders in, they will also be open every Sunday from 7am-2pm right up until Christmas.

As part of the Australian Government’s ‘mobile black spot’ program, Telstra is about to upgrade a mobile phone tower located on Range Road at Peachester. The tower, which is formally located at 480 Mt Beerwah Road, was originally constructed as part of the Queensland Government Wireless Network (GWN) initiative. The initiative was kicked off to improve radio voice and narrowband data communications for Queensland's public safety agencies when the G20 Summit was held in Brisbane in 2014. The project has brought Queensland’s police, fire and ambulance agencies onto the same communications platform, delivering enhanced coverage, security and interagency coordination. The latest announcement from Telstra sees six new twin tower mounted amplifiers being added to the tower. It will improve mobile reception and data capacity in the area with the introduction of better 4G coverage. The announcement, via a public notice, lets locals know that submissions on the proposal can be sent to Elizabeth Wasiel, Visionstream Australia, PO Box 5452, West End QLD 4101, by January 4, 2019. Further information can be obtained from www.rfnsa.com.au/4519007 or phone 1300 745 210 or email twp_qldplanning@visionstream.com.au.

Shanti Path Yoga Space now running classes at Beerwah Hall Letter from Santa Ray White Beerwah property consultant Alex Garden has once again been busy liaising with “the guy in the red suit” to organise personalised letters from Santa to be sent to children (and the young at heart). This free fun service follows on from the success of last year’s initiative, which was inspired by Alex’s young son’s adoration of Santa and all things Christmas. Knowing how delighted his son would be to receive a personalised letter from Santa, Alex thought it would be a lovely service to offer free letters from Santa to the community. Following a fantastic response to last year’s initiative, Alex said he was looking forward to donning the red suit again and heading out from December 20-23 to hand deliver as many letters as possible. “I’ve had a lot of support from the community during the year and this is a fun way to support them back. It’s great to see the kid’s faces light up when they receive their letter,” Alex said. There is still time to order your letter. Simply fill out the form in last week’s edition of GCM News (December 5, page 43) or send your details and the children’s names for the letter, along with a contact number and address details, to alex.garden@raywhite.com or text the information directly to him at 0407 245 287. Orders for the letters must be received by next Thursday December 20. Ray White Beerwah is also once again participating in the ‘Little ray of giving’ campaign, which runs right up until Christmas Eve. A tree has been set up in the Beerwah office and people are encouraged to donate toys for children in need. Gifts for children aged up to ten years would be ideal, and the gifts will then be distributed to enjoy at Christmas time. Donations can be dropped off anytime during business hours at Ray White Beerwah, 5/70 Simpson Street, Beerwah.

Teaching traditional Hatha Yoga, Vinyasa Yoga and Radiant Light Yoga, Prem runs her classes at the Peachester Hall on Monday evenings 6.30pm, and Friday mornings 9.30am. Starting in January, Prem will be adding two new classes at the Beerwah Hall on Wednesday evenings at 7pm and Monday mornings at 9.30am. The classes are suitable for all ages and ability levels, including pregnant women. For those wanting a gentler yoga experience, Prem says that the Monday morning classes at Beerwah will be a gentle practice with the other classes suitable for mixed level. “I encourage everyone in my classes to work at their own pace and will help you adapt the practice to your own body and level of ability. All classes include meditation, relaxation and breathing techniques and are great to improve your overall health and fitness with peace and relaxation,” Prem said. Community News 100 years and Zonta Says No!
Corflutes have been posted around the range communities with the message that Zonta Says No to domestic violence. It reflects a Zonta International 16-day initiative from November 25 to December 10 as part of the organisation’s mission to ‘advance the status of women by service and advocacy’. Several New York businesswomen started Celebrations to mark Zon ta’s Zonta in 1919 to encourage the education 100-year history will be held on of girls. Spreading quickly throughout the the hinterland next yea r world with programs to assist women to achieve independence, especially in developing countries, it established Zonta International Strategies to end violence against women and children in 1996 and ratified it as an ongoing program at the Paris convention in 1998. Following the global pandemic of women’s rights violations, the Zonta Says No program, first established in 2012, involves women across the world from Abidjan to Australia. During the 16-day initiative communities saw Zontians in the streets wearing orange T shirts to emphasise the message. President Julie Bevan said one of the most important messages of our time was that women’s rights should be human rights. “Zonta International tackles the problem of violence against women in many areas and works with the United Nations to implement strategies. It has committed more than US$9.5 million to this issue,” Ms Bevan said. “This biennium we are supporting initiatives to end child marriage, and sadly we are still involved in helping girls wherever they are who are forced to leave school without proper education and therefore no means of economic stability. “Another area we deal with is that of the iniquity of human trafficking. In that and all these programs Zonta International is the largest non-government organisation (NGO) supporter of UN Women. We are one of only 142 NGOs out of a total of 4045 that has been granted general consultative status with the United Nations, its highest grant,” she said.

Morris House update
Contributed by A.W.Husband, Secretary This year has been a good for us as a neighbourhood centre. We have been fortunate in the support we have received that has allowed us to be able to provide much needed services to the community. This includes funds from Gambling Community Benefit Fund to replace our very old computers and a running cost grant from Sunshine Coast Council. We have also recently received a grant from the Rotary Club of Glasshouse Mountains to update our security, which will be finalised shortly, and a grant from Sunshine Coast Council for re-stumping Morris House, which will be done as soon as possible. We have also been able to continue providing our emergency relief program through the support and donations from the Beerwah Lions Club, Landsborough Seventh-day Adventist Church, Glasshouse Anglican Church food bank, Dave Brown from Parklands Bakery and Sanctuary Op Shop at Mooloolaba. After 15 years of service our tax help volunteer Ross has retired. We have appreciated the outstanding service he has provided to our centre and the community. There are so many people in our community that support the centre’s work who are truly amazing and we can’t thank them enough for all the help and support. A very special thank you must be given to the volunteers who work at Morris House. We wouldn’t be able to operate without you. Morris House’s last day will be Friday, December 14 and we will re-open on Monday, January 14. We will leave a list on the door of organisations who can assist people while we are closed. We wish everyone a safe and happy Christmas and once again, we sincerely thank all who have assisted us and supported us this year. You all deserve a medal!
No frog stomping
Contributed by Charne Turner One of the great neighbours of Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve is Linsey Pollak, an incredibly gifted and creative musician whose work is underpinned by his passion for the environment. Linsey approached the Friends of Mary Cairncross with an idea for an interactive musical floor mat that could play when different frogs were tapped with a foot. The Friends thought the idea of stepping on frogs was perhaps not something an environmental Woodworker Ross Annels, Jinibara elder education centre should be Uncle Noel with musician Linsey Pollak promoting! However, we did want an exhibit where visitors could learn about the amazing frogs - and their call sounds – that can be found in our reserve. We approached internationally recognised coast carpenter and woodworker Ross Annels and commissioned him to design and carve a frog-xylophone, where each frog 'key' could play the call of a particular frog. The result is more than a musical instrument - it is nothing less than a work of art. The craftsmanship that has gone into its design and creation is breathtaking. Made out of red cedar, the xylophone gently curves in an undulating fashion along the wall so visitors can now conduct their own local frog symphonies. It has been named the ‘Gayaphone’ by the traditional owners, as gaya is the Jinibara word for frog. The exhibit was made possible by the many contributions made by visitors to the donation fund and is a unique way to showcase the diversity, interesting facts and traditional stories about local frogs.

By Judith Ross-Smith At the recent launch of the Maleny Arts Council (MAC) 2019 season, president Professor Peter Lavery said the Winter Festival next year would present outstanding Australian and international musicians. “This year we took an ambitious step launching the Maleny Winter Theatre Festival featuring new Australian theatre, now we are giving music lovers a turn when the festival opens on July 20,” Peter said at the launch. “As we review the year the committee is happy with the results, both artistically and also in that we have developed some good partnerships. We had necessary financial support from Sunshine Coast Council and Maleny Rotary as well as private donations, for which we are very grateful. “The final show in our 2018 festival, ‘Death by Soprano’, featured as part of the Horizon Festival, and we have the opportunity to explore opportunities [for both festivals] … and one of our festival shows next year could be part of Horizon’s 2019 program,” Peter said. MAC’s 2019 season will kick off with drama on Sunday, April 7 at a matinee followed by drinks with the cast on The Deck. This drama will feature Australian comedy legend Michael Veitch (from TV’s The D-Generation and Fast Forward) starring in ‘Mystery in the air’. Veitch plays a veteran radio star forced to share the microphone with a handsome brash newcomer (Simon Oats), transporting us back to a time when radio was king and political correctness unheard of. And the show must go on…or must it? The Maleny Winter Festival will open on Saturday evening, July 20 with ‘The Australian Voices’ choir.
President Peter Lavery launching the MAC 2019 season with wife Jacqueline This concert will be followed by Grammy Award winning jazz pianist Laurence Hopgood and jazz singer Rhiannon in Australia from the USA for the Brisbane Vocal Jazz Festival. “This is mainstream jazz at the top level and I am sure Maleny’s many jazz fans will be delighted we have been able to secure this virtuoso pair,” Peter said. The final show, billed as ‘pure fun’, will be a Saturday night cabaret with Carita Farrer Spencer bringing ‘Larry and the Dame’. This extraordinary artist brings together “the theatrical cyclone that is the fabulous Dame Farrar and the international sex-symbol, Larry Paradiseo, in a world class double act (with herself)”. As usual it’s drinks and refreshments on The Deck after all the shows to meet the artists. The Maleny Arts Council can be accessed on Facebook and on the website www.malenyartscouncil.com.

Environment the real winner By Lea Parkes A war is being waged on the Sunshine Coast – a war on waste. At the forefront of this battle are our school children, with students at Maleny State School leading the way. Last Tuesday, the school’s ‘waste warriors’ were presented with an award for the ‘best primary school’ entry in the Sunshine Coast Council’s ‘War on waste’ film competition for schools. The competition involved students filming a short documentary highlighting the imaginative, innovative and engaging strategies and initiatives that their schools have put in place to minimise waste. The prize for Maleny State School was a ‘buddy bench’ made out of recycled soft plastics and valued at $1,200. Cr Jenny McKay said the enthusiasm from all students involved in the Maleny State School’s waste minimisation program had been fabulous. “These young waste warriors are all very passionate about what they are doing in their own schools,” Cr McKay said. “However, what made Maleny’s initiative stand out was that it was so student driven. They have such a strong commitment to what they are doing that not only have they engaged their fellow students but have also been inspiring their broader community.” Maleny State School teacher Lou Walsh explained that the documentary showcased the work of the school’s participation in the council’s STARS program (Strategies Towards Active Resource Sustainability), which started earlier this year. “Our goal is to reduce our school’s landfill waste by composting our food scraps within the entire school and collecting soft plastic and sorting our recycling,” Lou said. Over the past nine months Lou has spent a session with students in each year group teaching them about what can be recycled and how to reduce their packaging. “The whole school has since embraced our new recycling and composting system and the best part of it is that the students are responsible for running it,” Lou said. “There are five year 4 boys who are doing an amazing job of promoting this initiative. “They worked out the signage to be put up around all of the school’s eating areas to help the students sort their rubbish into the four bins allocated to their area for waste, recycling, compost and soft plastics.” The boys were also bin monitors who advised students on what bin to use and visited classes to talk through the sorting process with the younger students. “In addition, we also started a garden club, purchasing a number of large composting bins so the fruit and vege scraps could be collected each day by the boys for composting.
Sunshine Coast Council’s environmental educator Sandie Johnson presents waste warriors Ranger Sayer, Zac Atiknson, William McCallum, Indi Walton, Cameron McLenaghan and Jesse-Jo Berg with their award "Indi Walton, a member of the Garden Club, also assists the boys in cleaning out the compost each month. Indi has contributed to the overall project by instigating a cooking segment on parade highlighting the use of produce from the school’s garden," Lou said. Indi also made a film for the competition that explained how to make kale chips. GC&M News plans to incorporate Indi’s instructions into Brownie’s garden column next year. “Three large garden beds were prepared and incorporated with the first lot of compost the boys produced. They were then planted out by the students with a variety of vegetables and herbs. “This learning space is now enjoyed by many classes and can be utilised for teaching in areas of health and science,” she said. Produce is now being sold to staff members and parents, allowing the gardening club to buy new seedlings and ingredients for the composting system. “It has been a great pleasure to see our students eager to taste and learn about the different edible plants and to see where their compost is going and what it can create,” Lou said. “This whole journey so far has been documented and photos have been taken so we can share our knowledge with others. “The knowledge and experience gained in this program will benefit this community on an ongoing basis as these students transition from their school life to adult members of our society. “What our five waste warriors have been able to achieve is wonderful, and it gives me great faith in our future generation,” Lou said. If you would like to see the student’s documentary head to the Maleny State School’s Facebook page.

Eudlo Hall will be the last stop on the Festival of Small Halls summer tour created by Woodford Folk Festival, celebrating the journey from Mullum Music Festival to Woodford on Sunday, December 16. Performers have been chosen for the tour not only because of their beautiful songs and tunes, but because they have the ability to really connect with the people they play for, whether through storytelling, the ability to tell a good joke (or a truly terrible one), a wonderful warmth and a real interest in visiting places a little off the beaten track. The performers are Old Man Luedecke from Canada and Lucy Wise from Victoria, with a surprise local artist. Tickets $25, concession $15 and children under 13 free. Book tickets through the Eudlo Hall’s website www.eudlohall.org.au. Food and bar on the day are fundraisers for the Eudlo Hall, located at 19 Rosebed Street, Eudlo.

You Said It Climate change an youth rallies
It was wonderful to see the thousands of school students who came out last week to have their say regarding climate change, After all, they are the ones who are going to have to live with the effects of rising global temperatures. It has been said that “the world is divided between those who know and those who don’t want to know”. With regard to climate change this means not knowing about the overwhelming weight of scientific evidence that it is occurring as a result of human activity. The word ‘consilience’ refers to something beyond consensus whereby the same conclusion is reached using several methods of reasoned enquiry. Awareness that climate change was occurring was reached independently by scientists in a number of totally different fields, from the study of ice cores going back thousands of years in the Arctic and Antarctic, to James Hansen at NASA, who after studying the atmosphere of Venus became aware in the 1980s about the correlation between carbon dioxide, methane and other gases in Earth’s atmosphere and a sudden rise in average global temperature. For those of us who do see the need for action we should be inspired by the youth rallies to not give in to apathy, but instead doing what we can to make sure our elected so-called ‘representatives’ get the message and take some real action in the form of supporting renewables and electric vehicles, phasing out coal and banning new coal mines and power stations. Now is a good time to

The Sunshine Coast Kennel Club (SCKC) is pleased to see in the GC&M News, December 5 edition, the article about Sunshine Coast Council raising a number of concerns with the proposed development application for a large kennel facility in Landsborough. We would like it to be known that the SCKC, based at Beerwah Sportsgrounds, is in no way associated with the proposed development and is totally opposed to the proposal. When they finished work, they left me in a cage for the night. When the boss found out where I was, the vet came back to open up so I could go home and spend the night with my family. What about our area?
I recently saw our Mayor Mark Jamieson on the news talking about how Sunshine Coast Council is supporting outdoor living with a new million dollar cycle and pedestrian bridge at Mooloolaba. So what about our area? I want to walk or cycle to Beerwah safely from Glass House Mountains, but this involves walking on the side of Steve Irwin Way which is far too dangerous. There is a path between Beerburrum and Glass House Mountains, as well as a walk between Beerwah and Landsborough, and a lovely walk between Mooloolah and Landsborough via the old railway corridor. However, not all are well signposted or conveniently linked. This massive tourist opportunity is being ignored. Imagine if we had a coordinated, highly visible walking and cycle track linking all the access points to the mountain climbs, and all the hinterland towns as an add on to the great walk in the Maleny, Montville and Mapleton area. There would be plenty of opportunities to create cafés or rest stops along the way. Most of the current walkways are not very visible. A very good example is that there are no directions from the train station to Mount Ngun
From the churches At Christmas time, we remember and celebrate God’s greatest gift to us by attending church to sing carols and listen to the original Christmas story and show generosity to our families, workmates and friends. I love this time of year, maybe because I have a wonderful wife who does most of the Christmas present buying. I look forward to our family get-togethers, seeing our children, their spouses and our grandchildren open presents and enjoy Christmas festivities. However, this enjoyment isn’t the case for everyone. I was reminded recently that there are people who, while they may be well off financially, struggle through this time of year. This is true for an acquaintance I met at another church I recently visited. He and his wife struggle with their three autistic boys. I was surprised when he told me that they were dreading Christmas. I had known of their family makeup, but only realised recently that his wife had stresses with GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY

Ngun at Glass House Mountains. That walk has pathways some of the way, but not all of it, and needs fine weather and mowed verges to navigate easily. I have seen lost looking groups of tourists on foot near the railway station as there is no signage giving directions to the local information centre, which is only a few metres away. Our council tells us that we want tourists and yet they do not seem to support tourist spots with the infrastructure that tourists would expect. I know when I travel, I expect to find areas signposted and easily accessible via all forms of transport, and most of the time when I travel that is the case. Gracie Hill Glass House Mountains
Counting the cost
According to an esteemed Queensland newspaper “it’s time our politicians grew a backbone and faced up to the reality that coal production is good for Australia’s economy. This obsession with renewable energy targets will send the country broke”. So, coal is good and cheap. Meanwhile I’m reading that “thermal coal power prices have doubled in two years… so much so that wind and solar are now lower than even just
Pastor Mal Moses Glasshouse Community Church the community work she does for employment and how a lot more of the family responsibilities had fallen onto my friend while also looking after his wife who had spent some time, on and off, in hospital in recent months. There is a lot to be said for the need to “care for the carers”. It made me realise that not everyone looks forward to Christmas. How do we help families or friends in need? Possibly in this case more long-term, specialised support is needed. (I have a grandson who has autism and my wife and I enjoy every opportunity to spend time with him). Praying for people certainly brings them to mind more often and prompts questions of “how can I help?”. When we know how and when we can help, it becomes easier to give assistance. Let us become more aware of our ‘fellow man’ and ask God how we can help them. It will make a huge difference to how families enjoy Christmas this year. Inappropriate ‘Just for laughs’
May I draw your attention to the absolutely inappropriate decision to publish the Noel Meyers’ contribution ‘The honeymoon is over’, in the November 28 edition of GC&M News. This kind of disparagement ‘humour’ is such an important issue in the current climate - extending to our political leadership - that I feel it is important that it behoves all media to show leadership by not giving it oxygen. 50 years of being a Lion
Maleny Blackall Range Lions Club member Colin Sinclair was recently presented with a personal letter from the Lions International president Dr Gudrun Yngvadottir of Iceland and a medal for 50 years of continuous active service to the club. Colin joined Aspley Club as a charter member in 1968 and has been a member of only four clubs in his 50 years. Throughout this half century he has held most positions but his years as membership chairman of Maleny Blackall Range earned him life membership in 2015. In July this year his work with the ‘Welcome to Maleny dinner’, which he initiated in 2000, was recognised when he received the Professor Ian Fraser Humanitarian Award, and he continues to inspire and work with each year’s committee. This project has been recognised by other clubs in the Lions District and is being trialled by several using information and suggestions gathered by Colin from his experience over the years.

Santa’s shop kept busy
Contributed by John Andrews The Blackall Range Woodcrafters Guild held its annual Santa Shop at St Mary’s Hall on Montville Green on December 1-2. A steady stream of people passed through the hall, several purchasing items made by the Woodies. A large number of families enjoyed the cooler evening on Saturday for the lighting of
Woodie Brian Harris showing Andrew Powell one of the vintage wooden vehicles made by Hugh McKenna the tree and the visit by the bearded gentleman who handed out gifts to the many children. The Woodies also conducted a very popular sausage sizzle that was well patronised. The raffle prizes were smaller in size this year, making it easier for the winners to carry them home. All prizes were items made by members of the guild. Visitors on Saturday included Councillor Jenny McKay, state Member for Glass House Andrew Powell and federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace.

GC&M News was recently chatting to our awardwinning local food blogger Amanda Smyth, better known as the Cooker and a Looker. We asked Amanda for a Christmas cooking suggestion for our readers. Once again she has come up with something that could be mastered by just about all of our readers – what she describes as the world’s simplest Christmas cake. Amanda first heard of this method of making Christmas cake from Kim McCosker’s (‘4 Ingredients’ fame) mum, who told her it’s a recipe from her neighbour. Amanda made a couple of slight adaptions, one is the two-thirds cup of grog, which Amanda suggests is optional, and a cup of almonds, which she uses to decorate the cake, so that’s all about the presentation. There’s no (additional) sugar in the recipe so it’s diabetes friendly and is also dairy-free. However, dietary considerations aside, the real reason why Amanda loves this cake so much is that it’s ridiculously easy. Photography by Emma Ruddle from Maleny
The world's easiest Christmas cake
Amanda Smyth | Cooker and a Looker Prep: 10 mins Cook: 2 hours, 30 mins Inactive: 12 hours Total: 14 hours, 40 mins Ingredients 1kg dried mixed fruit 3 cups orange juice 2/3 cup grog (rum, whiskey, whatever floats your sleigh) 3 cups self-raising flour 1 cup blanched almonds to decorate Instructions In a large bowl combine the mixed fruit, orange juice and booze. Cover and allow to soak overnight. Preheat oven to 150C and prepare a 22cm cake tin. Stir flour into the soaked fruit and mix well. Spoon mixture into the cake tin and bake for 2½ hours in the bottom of the oven or until cooked through. Remove from tin and leave to cool. Wrap in foil or place in an air tight container where this cake will keep nicely for 3-4 weeks. If you would like some additional inspiration for your festive cooking this month, head over to Amanda’s website www.cookerandalooker.com and download her free ‘12 Days of Christmas Cookbook’ which has some great, easy recipes.

Each year as part of Maleny Uniting Church’s Christmas Tree Festival, which runs from Wednesday, December 19 to Christmas Eve, December 24, a charity is nominated to receive funds raised from the event. This year they have chosen the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre as the beneficiary. To support this great initiative the Neighbourhood Centre is asking for volunteers to be available for two-hour shifts at the entrance desk for the festival at the Uniting Church. There are three shifts per day - 2-4pm, 4-6 pm and 6-8 pm - on most days. If you can help, give the Neighbourhood Centre a call on 5499 9345.

Christmas Events ... 12th day before Maleny ... Christmas this week Traditionally the Maleny Christmas Festival and Street Party is held on the last day of the school term, which this year is Friday, December 14. This means the event is the 12th day before Christmas, which will be the theme of this year’s competition for kids. They will need to find the ‘12 signs of Christmas’ within the town centre, hidden in the front windows of 12 participating shops. The competition will open the week before the event and will be concluded on the night with a random drawn for the prize of a kid’s pass to Australia Zoo. Santa (and Mrs Claus) will be in attendance for kids to meet. Santa photos will be a gold coin donation for parents to take with their own phones or cameras. Money raised goes to Greyhound Rescue. Maleny Community Centre will once again be the main music hub with Christmas carols from 6-7pm, followed by live music by talented local musicians from 7.30-9.30pm. The hall’s bar will be open and run by Community Centre volunteers. Local children’s dance groups will be performing outside MCU from 6–7pm and The Unusual Suspects will have everyone dancing in the street outside IGA at 7pm. This year’s free kids activities will include laser tag in Cooke Park, sponsored by Andrew Powell, as well as face painting and kids activities in the hall provided by Maleny Neighbourhood Centre. Some shops will extend trading hours to join in the fun with 26 stalls down the centre of the road to encourage movement in and out of shops. These will include lots of delicious food stalls and community groups. There will be more action at the Riverside Centre where they will have stalls, music and food. The event is on from 6–10pm.

As the countdown draws closer to the 2018 Glasshouse Country Christmas Carols, to be held at the Beerwah Sportsground this Saturday night, those involved are getting pretty excited. This free, family–friendly gathering offers something for the whole community and is a wonderful mix of familiar songs and traditional interactive carols by candelight. Everyone is welcome, so come and sing-a-long and share the community Christmas spirit. There will be great local acts, musicians and three wonderful choirs to enjoy. Don’t forget to bring your appetite as there will be an awesome array of food and drinks, as well as plenty of activities for the kids. Get your family photo taken in the giant Snow Globe. The carols are organised by the Landsborough School of the Arts Memorial Hall, with a highlight for the night being internationally renowned vocal conductor Brian Martin on centre stage. Entertainment starts at 4.30pm with musicians and dance, then the carols stage show starts at 6.30pm, with the grand finale leading into the fireworks at 8.15pm. And don’t forget to bring your blankets and camp chairs so you can get comfy and enjoy!

Christmas News
Libraryland Village comes to Maleny High Students entering the school library on the first Monday of December were entranced by the arrival of the Libraryland Christmas ginger bread village. The Christmas fantasy land was the result of many extra hours of creative work and inspiration by librarian Desley Newsham. A number of students helped create components of the decorations but had no idea of the extent of the final creation.
Desley said that what started as an idea for a small cabinet display just grew and grew. So when students arrived Monday morning they were wowed by the extent of the display. The display is made from recycled cardboard and paper, which fits with the school’s environment committee recycling activities. Environment committee teacher Amanda Edwards said the Libraryland display has been an inspirational kick start for students to make creations with a Christmas theme from recycled materials as part of the alternate program activities in the final week of school. To add some extra interest a number of staff have been ‘elfed’ and cleverly incorporated into the displays as elves in various poses. It is a bit like ‘Where’s Wally’ for elves. Students have just loved the fun atmosphere the display has created with students coming to take photos and using the village as a backdrop for filming assessment pieces. Well done to Desley Newsham and Sharon O’Farrell and their band of helpers from Ms Rigg’s year 7 enterprise and Ms Collis’s year 9 humanities classes for making Maleny State High School a fun place to work Teachers Isabel Riggs and Natasha Collis with the Year 7 and learn. Glenview State School’s 225 students recently raised $10,026.73 by taking part in a school fun run to raise much needed funds for their school. Jodie Buemi from Glenview State School said the students’ commitment to the fun run was second to none. “Our students are so excited about the money they’ve helped raise, which will be used to turn our school hall into an amazing open learning space. “It will give us more room at school for specialist lessons and will be a flexible space that can be used in many ways. “The students thoroughly enjoyed participating in the school fun run alongside their peers as they cheered each other on,” Jodie said. Brendan Hopp, director of School Fun-Run, part of The Fundraising Group, said his organisation took great pride in helping schools improve student wellbeing and their learning environment. School Fun-Run has been supporting schools for more than 30 years. To find out more about organising a school fun run phone Abigail McWhinnie, Aneisha Clark 1800 386 786 or visit and Ari Cramp www.schoolfundraising.com.au.
Beerburrum student’s rock Contributed by Debbie Roberts
Parents, staff and the Beerburrum community were treated to a night of musical renditions by Beerburrum State School students at their recent music recital. Students of all ages performed a range of musical pieces including choir, instrumental band and the xylophone ensemble. A big thank you must go to Emma Creed and Clare Deedy for their tireless dedication to this event as well as the student performances at our school centenary held earlier this year and our upcoming carols night.
Cooking up a big thank you
Contributed by Sally Joyce Peachester students had their last cook-up for the year on Tuesday as part of their prestigious Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program. A special feast was prepared by the students to thank all of the community and parent volunteers of 2018. These volunteers keep our school special and no small or large school survives without them. This year we thanked all our P&C members, fundraisers and helpers at book club, tuckshop, reading, home-reader books, kitchen, garden, enviro club, sports and music transporters, uniforms and stocktake, and friends and mentors to our children when in need. If you would like to volunteer at our school next year in any of our great programs, please call the office before the end of school term to find out how your gifts and talents can help our students to be successful in all areas. We are welcoming lots of new faces and would love to have you on board in 2019. Thank you to all our volunteers from 2018. Enjoy your well-earned rest.

FREE TRIAL Next week marks the end of junior school for the year 6 students at Glass House Mountains State School. Year 6 teachers Jo Weir and Suzy Reid said these students had been wonderful leaders, displaying initiative and enthusiasm in all tasks and activities undertaken throughout the year. “They have certainly left their mark on the school by creating six stepping stones, all embossed with their handprints and initials, as part of the legacy they will leave behind,” Jo said.
Classes Saturday Mornings at Landsborough Primary School
The stepping stones will be placed in the garden beside the current year 6 rooms. The concrete and moulds used were kindly donated by Hanson, Glass House Mountains. Special thanks to Chris Wilson (quarry manager) and his friendly assistants, Hannah and Aleisha for their assistance. The school would like to wish the year 6 students of GHMSS 2018 the very best for a wonderful future.
Congratulations to the Graduating Class of 2018 Embrace the Future Together -

Federal Member for Fisher
Community emphatically rejects a Sunshine Coast casino If there was ever any doubt, this week we have finally demonstrated once and for all that the Sunshine Coast community utterly rejects Mayor Mark Jamieson’s desire to see a casino built in our region. Alongside thousands of local residents I have been fighting this proposal since it first became public last year, with a petition, a casino forum and a variety of other campaign activities. This week robust ReachTel data from a survey of more than 600 locals was published telling us what our region really thinks on this issue. The survey found 81% want a convention centre. Yet, when asked if they would support a casino, even if it included such a convention centre, 75.8% gave an emphatic ‘no’. I don’t want to see local lives destroyed and our community changed forever by a casino on the Sunshine Coast, and now we know for sure that no less than threequarters of our community agrees. I will continue to fight this damaging proposal until the Mayor clearly and publicly rules it out. If you haven’t already, I encourage you to sign my petition at www.andrewwallacemp.com.au/petitions.
Merry Christmas and a happy New Year By now you have hopefully received my Christmas card, featuring the wonderful photograph by Lyn Crandon of the crimson sunset over Dicky Beach. Last year’s card featured an image of the Glass House Mountains and I am keen to see more great entries from the hinterland in 2019. So I encourage you to get your cameras out this summer and get snapping! My card also includes a handy 2019 calendar with the dates of the school and public holidays for next year, which you can detach when Christmas is over and put on your fridge. My office will be closed from 12noon on Christmas Eve until Monday, January 14. After the short break over Christmas I will be launching a special tour of the electorate of Fisher. I will be holding 26 listening posts with a twist all over our community during the week of January 21. I will be speaking to local residents throughout the hinterland about the issues that are important to them in 2019, as well as getting a unique perspective on the transport challenges that we face. Look out for my next newsletter, which will be arriving in your letter box early next month, for more details. Christmas is a time to reflect, to look forward, and to be grateful for the wonderful region that we call home. Most of all it is a time for family. So from my family to yours, merry Christmas and a happy New Year. I hope you have a successful 2019. Andrew.wallace.mp@aph.gov.au www.andrewwallacemp.com.au Search us on Facebook Wallace4Fisher 32

State Member for Glass House Fires in our patch
Mooloolah breakfast forum
The skies were hazy, the air smelt like smoke and there has never been a more critical time for our local firies. Unfortunately, Glass House has suffered its share of damaging fires in the past couple of weeks of extreme heat. In particular, we have seen fires in Wamuran, Delaneys Creek and Peachester. While Wamuran residents suffered through thick black smoke and evacuation warnings and Delaneys Creek residents had a nervous wait, Peachester locals experienced a grassfire that the local rural fire brigade was able to contain very quickly. I just want to take a moment to extend my heartfelt gratitude to our firefighters working ridiculously long hours to keep the community safe. I am in awe of their work ethic and how they will drop everything to help put out a fire. You might not be aware, but we even had firies from other states fly into Queensland to join emergency strike teams. Thank you for all what you do.
Local heroes grants – winners My fourth and final round of local heroes grants have now closed and all applicants have been notified of the outcome. As always, there were so many incredible applications. If you were not selected this time, I urge you to apply again next year. The winners of round four are: • Savannah Charters (Glass House Mountains) – International karate championships • In-Tents 4x4 (Ocean View) – Representing the Moreton Bay region in national finals • Maleny State School P&C – 2019 welcome lunch for year 7 students • Heartspace Performing Arts Centre (Maleny) – subsidising student fees • Maleny Commerce – Street Christmas carnival
Christmas is coming It’s time to haul out your dusty old tree from the garage, whip out the gingerbread and shortcake biscuits, try not to get sunburnt or sustain an injury hanging out the Christmas lights and prepare yourself for incessant carols from now until December 25. It might cause stress at times but Christmas is a wonderful time of the year for the little kids and us big kids who get the chance to spend a little more time with our families. I will be closing my office from COB Friday, December 21 and opening again on Monday, January 14. Emails, phone messages and mail will be periodically checked throughout this time, so if there is something urgent that you need to discuss with me, the best way to do so is to send an email to glass.house@parliament.qld.gov.au. Have a safe and Merry Christmas, and a happy New Year! glass.house@parliament.qld.gov.au www.andrewpowell.com.au Search us on Facebook Andrew Powell

Thank you to everyone who has joined in the Mooloolah breakfast forum this year. This is a wonderful network of passionate people who are working to deliver great outcomes for the local community. If you would like get involved next year, the next Mooloolah breakfast meeting will be held at 7.30am on February 7.
Keep an eye on the weather with council’s app It is shaping up to be another very hot summer, which can bring extreme weather. Download the Sunshine Coast Council app on your phone, or follow council on social media to receive weather warnings and important emergency advice.
School holidays
Workshops, arts classes and exhibitions will keep the whole family entertained during the holidays. Little kids and big kids alike will have plenty of opportunities to explore our Sunshine Coast’s natural environment, with a children’s workshop series that will bring together local and visiting artists to discover the curious creatures of the Sunshine Coast from December 12-January 18.
Puppies, kittens and pets are gifts for life
If you’re considering a cute and cuddly present for the family this Christmas, I would encourage everyone to visit our amazing team at the Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge and consider adopting a fury friend. These precious pups, dogs, kittens and cats can make a wonderful addition to your family. However, if being given as a gift please ensure the lucky recipient is looking for a gift that lasts a lifetime.
Merry Christmas and happy New Year
I would like to wish you all a very merry and safe Christmas and a healthy and happy New Year. The Glasshouse Country Community Carols is back and bigger than ever on Saturday, December 15, with a big stage, great sound and an exciting, brand new program. Entertainment will be in full swing from 4.30pm, including performances by local dance groups, bands and soloists. There will be rides, food, an animal farm, a jumping castle and lots more. From 6.30pm, two choirs will join carollers singing some of the all-time Christmas classics before fireworks bring this special evening to a close. To find out more on what’s happening in your area this Christmas season, visit council’s events website events.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au. Over the festive season, there will be some changes to opening hours for council’s customer contact counters, reception desks and development information service counters. Offices in Caloundra, Maroochydore and Nambour will be closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day as well as on December 27 and 28. However, you can still contact council via phone, email, web chat and web call back on these dates. Council services, including bin collection, will continue throughout the Christmas break. Other changes will be in place until early January. For full details visit council’s website or contact council on 5475 7272. Health &Beauty Health is wealth
Be your own best friend at Christmas Christmas is getting closer and the Christmas carols tell us that it is the season to be jolly. How many of us feel that in the preparation stages? For some people Christmas can provoke emotions of sadness, despair, loneliness and desperation and can put a toll on families, finances and health. Now is the time to think about being your own best friend or getting support to do so. You do not need to face these worries or concerns alone, as there is a safe place in Glass House you can turn to. Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre offers free counselling with no waiting lists and can work in with your availability. Fully qualified and registered counsellor Julie Evans (pictured) is ready to support and help you through this difficult time. Call or message her on 0400 973 247. Julie is keen to share with readers some of elements of the program developed by Drs Kristin Neff and Christopher Germer of mindful self-compassion. When we think of the word ‘compassion’, it can be tempting to apply it to everyone but ourselves. Self-compassion entails mindfulness of our own suffering, responding to ourselves with kindness and feelings of interconnectedness with humanity.
Don’t forget to respond to your own pain with the same type of kindness you would show to a friend you cared about. Rather than being cold or judgmental, if we are warm and supportive towards ourselves we give ourselves time to heal. Ironically, we’re often harsher and more unforgiving of ourselves than anyone else in our lives. How much better would it be to respond to our own pain with an understanding of selfsoothing and give ourselves what makes us feel better - be it music, beach, bush, good friends or family. It’s important to realise your experience is not isolated from what others are also experiencing and that we can give ourselves self-care. To help others – family and friends - we need to help ourselves first. Self-care is not an indulgence. Self-care is a discipline that we can learn to use every day if we listen to our needs. The Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre is able to provide this free counselling service thanks to the funding provided by Stockland Aura community grants.

On the final day of play each year the Beerwah ladies golf players get into the spirit of the ‘silly’ season by playing in themed costumes. This year the theme was ‘circus’, which seemed appropriate for the clowning around required by the day’s rules, including teeing off with a cricket bat, with your eyes closed and throwing the golf ball. This most recent version of Anton Chekov's play depicts ageing actress Irina (Annette Bening) visiting her brother Sorin (Brian Dennehy) and her son Konstantin (Billy Howle) at a beautiful lakeside estate in the Russian countryside. With Irina is her lover Boris (Corey Stoll), a successful novelist. Events take a dramatic and unfortunate turn when Nina (Saoirse Ronan), a young and naive girl from a nearby estate, falls in love with Boris. To further compound the drama, Nina is already in a relationship with Konstantin, setting in train an array of powerful emotions: jealousy, revenge, desire and unrequited love - to name just a few! And the romantic entanglements continue to snowball as the narrative unfolds in the charming early 20th century setting. Described by one critic as "Chekov .....filtered through a Downton-tinted lens", this lavish American production is sure to entertain and beguile the audience with dazzling performances from a stellar cast. This fastpaced romance/comedy/drama will engage - and bemuse - the audience from start to finish. Calling all community gardeners
Jason Carmichael from Glass House wants to hear from people interested in starting and running a community garden in Beerwah. Over the years Jason has been involved in permaculture, agriculture and other community gardens – such as the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre – and he knows firsthand the benefits these facilities can have for a community. To start with, Jason is asking for interested people to contact him on 0409 993 799 – leave a message if he doesn’t answer (he’s probably in the garden). What a great idea. The master planning that was done for Beerwah a few years back by Sunshine Coast Council did identify that the southern end of Turner Park (right at the end of Turner Street) could be a suitable spot to locate a community garden. So who knows, this may just be the start of something.
Barung Landcare Lichens Lichens are ubiquitous in our subtropical environs and often go unnoticed. However, once you ‘get your eye in’ for lichens you’ll be overwhelmed by the extraordinary variety of forms and colours almost everywhere you look. Tufts of ‘old man’s beard’, green and yellowcoated rocks, and elegant blue-green leafy growths on tree trunks and fence posts are just a few forms. Lichens, which are estimated to cover 10% of the Earth’s surface, consist of two organisms living in symbiosis: a fungus, which provides structure, protection, access to moisture and minerals, and cyanobacteria or algae, which photosynthesises and provides food. Lichens liberate nutrients from rocks, wood, rain and air, contributing to soil and sediment formation as well as providing food for invertebrates and vertebrates. They attach to stable substrates and often establish on slow-growing parts of trees such as bark on trunks. They can grow on almost any surface, including rock, glass, plastic, plants and animals, and in the most extreme environments, such as deserts and Arctic tundra. The richest diversity of lichens is found in tropical forests where there can be more than 500 species in a hectare! Lichens existed on Earth before dinosaurs and have been used by humans for food, dyes (including Scottish tartan), perfume and medicine. Extracts from lichens have been used in folk medicine in Europe, North America, Africa and Asia to treat a range of conditions including sore throats, breast cancer, scurvy, wounds and menstrual disorders. Fun fact: Ethnolichenology is the study of the relationship between lichens and people. Barung Landcare is a leading community-based organisation working to develop ethical solutions for a sustainable future. We support local and regional community empowerment to conserve and enhance the rich diversity of natural resources of the Blackall Range and environs. www.barunglandcare.org.au

Glasshouse Country & Maleny News
Sport By Sonia Clark Local multiclass champions Seanna Thompson and Ryan Engle have returned home after a stellar effort at the School Sport Australia track and field national championships held in Melbourne last month. Both athletes have done Queensland proud by winning a swag of medals at the highest level of school sporting achievement. With the additional honour of being named captain of the Queensland team, Maleny Little Athletics’ member Ryan was thrilled to be awarded gold, silver and bronze medals over the three-day championships in the 10-12 years events. His winning cache included two golds for discus and long jump, one silver for the 100m and two bronze for shotput and as part of the 12 years boys relay team. As well as his family, Ryan’s coach Panayiotis Negropontis also travelled to Melbourne from Maleny to support Ryan in his winning streak, which also included breaking three School Sport Australia records in the 12 years boys multiclass long jump, discus and 100m. Glasshouse Little Athletic club superstar multiclass athlete Seanna also achieved a fantastic result at the championships with three personal bests in 100m, 200m and long jump. She also became the new Australian record holder in long jump for T38. Sienna came back with silver (medley relay) and bronze (long jump) medals.
Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Graeme Glover The highlight for the past week has been the use of our wonderful facilities by numerous local businesses for their Christmas parties. Thanks to Maleny Cheese and Maleny IGA for their support by hosting events at our club, which in turn helps us to provide fun for so many within our community. On the bowls front, rain interrupted Wednesday night play. The final will be played next week with the Outlaws playing the in-form Handels. The question now is, can the Handels overcome the absence of Miles Allen and beat the fast finishing Outlaws? Friday will see the final session of season two scroungers competition decided with Brett Gillis, Ray Pantlin and Dave Edwards contesting this finals match. All the best for the shoot-out. A reminder to all, the Scotty Fawkes memorial games are on Wednesday of next week as a finale to our 2019 Wednesday bowls season. All welcome to come and enjoy the evening and support the club at our final bowls event in what has been a great year where we have seen some new talent starting to develop at the club. See you all on the green.
Maleny Cricket reunion Past players of the Maleny and District Cricket Association are invited to a reunion to be held at the Maleny Showgrounds at 11am on Saturday’ January 19. Partners are welcome. There will be a barbeque lunch at 11.30am. Please RSVP to Ian 5472 4121, Vince 5494 2193 or Bob 5494 3621 by January 5.

This week is the last Thursday play until February. The launch day of the Q7s was on Sunday at Salisbury Bowls Club. Our club took two teams down with five of our juniors taking part. By all reports it was a fantastic morning. The first round of the Q7s will be on Saturday, January 12. A sheet will be up this Thursday for both the Q7s and gr8. If you are unavailable on any dates please cross your name off ASAP so the selectors know. Our presentation lunch is this Saturday, December 15. Arrive at 12noon for a beer, with lunch at 1pm followed by presentations. This is the pinnacle of our year so the committee hopes to see lots of members attend. The cost is only $33 for a buffet lunch plus dessert bar, which is a great price. Sunday, December 16. The Police Bowlers will be holding a game of bowls and their break up Christmas lunch. This will be our last day of bowls for 2018 so hope to see many names down on the sheet at the club. Game kicks off at 11.30am, cost is $7. Remember, December 31 is the final day you can renew membership for 2019 at a cost of $95. If you pay after this date you may have to fill in a new membership form and pay an extra $12.50.

The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker Thursday, November 31: Nick Cram, Donna Manning, Bev Sockhill, and Gillian Bradley played two games of singles. The scores were a little blurry because of the informal nature of the games. However, Nick appears to have won by a significant margin, possibly 10–3, against Donna in a 14-point game, while Gillian and Bev ended up about equal. Sunday, December 2: In the afternoon just one 14-point game was played between Ken Barker and Donna. Donna won convincingly 14–8. Conditions were quite hot. Tuesday, December 4: The Range Care group visited and took advantage of the more benign weather conditions to enjoy some games on the lawn. The photo shows Wendy Whitby (centre) playing a “stop” shot after having been coached by Sarah Widin (left) with Bev Sockhill looking on. It catches Wendy the instant after striking the brown ball with her mallet. This is an important croquet shot since it causes the croquet ball (green) to travel between four and six times the distance of the striker’s ball (brown). Here Wendy has executed the shot well. Note her balance and the fact that there is no follow through of the mallet. The green ball can already be seen travelling significantly further than the brown. Lessons for beginners are held on Saturdays at 8am on the courts in the showgrounds. Play days on the picturesque lawns at the bottom of the showground are 2.10pm for 2.30pm on Thursdays and Sundays. For details contact president Vince Carbery on 5494 2193, or secretary Priscilla Vickers on 5494 3555.
Beerwah Ladies Golf Contributed by Brenda Briese As 2018 draws to a close we played our last ladies competition for the year on Thursday, December 6. There were 74 players, in teams of four, playing a nine-hole drop out ambrose. As always we had a fun day, including fancy dress, playing in costumes. The theme was ‘Circus’, with about half of the ladies taking part and the rest in Christmas clothes. On each hole there were different conditions including teeing off with a cricket bat, teeing off with your eyes closed, or throwing the ball from the tee. It was all fun. Winners were Michelle Leahy, Pauline Mason, Fay Barry, Caroline Hale, runners up were Helen Russ, Cheryl Jepson, Karen Madsen, Cheryl Peut and second runners up were Hope Hannah, Sue Williamson, Debs Rutherford, Karen Gannon. See photos of the day on page 34. So that's a wrap for this year. Hope to see you all back on the fairways in 2019. Merry Christmas and happy New Year to all. 43

Just for Laughs An old, tired-looking dog wandered into my yard. I could tell from his collar and well-fed belly that he had a home and was well care for. He calmly came over to me, I gave him a few pats on his head; he then followed me into my house, slowly walked down the hall, curled up in the corner and fell asleep. An hour later, he went to the door, and I let him out. The next day he was back, greeted me in my yard, walked inside and resumed his spot in the hall and again slept for about an hour.
ARIES March 21 - April 20 This is a week for widening your horizons - both figuratively and literally - until the end of the month. Some of you may have difficulty finding the truth, others will have trouble facing it! Deal creatively with your feelings instead of being held back. Faithfull friends, and partners, are quite an asset and tangible over this weekend. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 If you are wanting success, with Mercury entering Sagittarius this week it is going to be an exploration of your finances. A couple of morning discussions will run around your financial area finding the best conclusions possible. Warm support over the weekend gives you reason to rejoice about warm Christmas friendships. GEMINI May 22 - June 23 A happy flow of Christmas camaraderie can be a lot of fun. You might also find that it greases the wheels of any plans or projects where you need cooperation. Fast moving events and inspiration favour a steady up trend in romance and social life. You have the green light to pursue your personal ambitions. Follow instincts! CANCER June 24 - July 22 Any complaints probably won’t resolve themselves this week, especially if it relates to travel plans or relatives a fair distance away. By the weekend you are functioning better with your emotional gut feelings rather than logic or reason. Stay on that level and you will vibrate in resonance with the right people. Ambitious activities!

Week Beginning 12/12/18
This continued off and on for several weeks. Curious I pinned a note to his collar that said I would like to find out who was the owner of this wonderful sweet dog and ask if they were aware that almost every afternoon their dog came to my house for a nap. The next day he arrived for his nap with a reply note pinned to his collar: "He lives in a home with six children - two under the age of three. He's trying to catch up on his sleep. Can I come with him tomorrow?" Contributed by Noel Meyers

LEO July 23 – August 22 Activities that have a touch of novelty will have the most appeal over the weekend. During this week you can go after what you want, but it does help you a lot if you go about it in secret, especially shopping! Take care of obligations relating to your home and family. It will be easier than you thought. Get teamwork support now. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 The planet that rules your thinking and intellect is Mercury. This now enters the sign of Sagittarius, which is a splendid optimistic opening of joy and good cheer for the Christmas holidays. There should be good news around the home or with family contact. A special person shows up by the weekend which may motivate you. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 This is a week when you would welcome any change of scene. An unexpected message may be an invitation to enjoy some fun. A local event could be inspiring and a few days around the 17th sees you with helpful associates. Over the weekend you will have reason to feel good, maybe even a little lucky because of appreciation. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 You should have good reason to rejoice as you are surrounded by personal pleasures, happy loved ones and inspiring motivations. The weekend continues to flow with a sweet flow of warm affections and emotional satisfactions. There is a good emotional pulse from the loves of your life, whether a person, child or partner.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 A couple of planets connect, starting the week off with a jarring jolt. Perhaps you remember that you neglected to do something, or miss sending emails or smart phone contact. However, you can save the day by being resourceful. You encounter daily routines that bubble along at an exhilarating pace. Home and family interests now. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 There will be plenty of reasons to celebrate friendships this week. You will also have good intuitive guidance about who needs what at Christmas. A good get together over the weekend sees the combination of reliable partnerships. Early the following week complicated emotions may take over. You are still quite productive. AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 Generally, this week sees your mood very buoyant. This is because you are probably lifted up by friends and associates who are positive and optimistic. Keep your eye on all your objectives and do not get pulled in by emotional and manipulative game players. Relationships over the weekend bring quiet energising support. PISCES February 20 - March 20 The Moon will enter your sensitive sign and bring you pleasing personal energies and interactions, energised by the Christmas spirit. The weekend sees you counting on a good holiday period and you are energised with purpose and determination. Mercury beams up your ideal visions for success now. You offer good support.
