Hi Everyone...

Across the Sunshine Coast there are many different events being held this year to tie into Council’s celebration of the 50 year anniversary of the naming of the Sunshine Coast. Our cover story for this week highlights how the Landsborough community are really coming together to celebrate in a big way. The group, who are at the centre of organising the collaborative activity, are keen to bring the community together for a range of reasons including building community connections and relationships, and exploring how local groups can work together, as well as providing a great opportunity for locals and visitors to celebrate the beauty in the region. And for those who are new to our community it is also a great opportunity to learn about the history of Landsborough and the Sunshine Coast through listening to others' stories, through art and exhibitions and a chance to see things from a different perspectives. For those that would like to share their stories or for those who would like to listen to the stories of others, I am sure Sunday afternoon between 2pm and 4pm at the Landsborough Hall will be really Regards, enjoyable.

Local News Recollections of loving Landsborough Recollections is a series of events to be held in Landsborough to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the naming of the Sunshine Coast. Several community organisations are working together to plan activities including; Loving Landsborough Day, a community celebration, and The Newsmakers – 50 years of major events on the Sunshine Coast, a new installation for the Landsborough Museum. The first event to kick off the celebration will be the community conversation to be held at Landsborough Hall. Old timers, people with links to families from the past, Indigenous people, community leaders and other Landsborough residents are coming together to share stories of the town at the Landsborough School of Arts Memorial Hall between 2pm and 4pm this Sunday, July 16. The Landsborough ‘Community Conversation’ is designed to spark inspiration for eight Glasshouse Country artists who have been commissioned to each paint a 1m x 1m artwork to be hung in the Landsborough Hall as a part of the 50th Anniversary of the naming of the Sunshine Coast. It will also be an opportunity for locals to connect and share stories about Landsborough. The theme of the conversation and exhibition is ‘Loving Landsborough – 50 years past and 50 years future’. Up to 12 artworks will be produced as a part of the series and will be hung in the hall throughout October and November. Each artist will also host a workshop in the hall over this time to demonstrate their art work.

The exhibitions will then tour to Beerwah Library and Vianta Café. The exhibition is being curated by Michele Deveze of Red Door Art, locally known for her monthly Vianta Art installations. For more information about the conversation, contact Ana on 0407 165 308 and, for the exhibition, contact Michelle at reddoorart@ bigpond.com. The 50th Anniversary of the Naming of the Sunshine Coast will be officially commemorated on August 1, 2017. The Loving Landsborough Day event, planned for Saturday August 19, is the largest collaboration. It will feature a 1960s-themed High Tea with a Twist in the Landsborough Arts Hall, a tea cosy and beanie knitting competition, entertainment, a gold coin donation to see the new museum exhibition and an exhibition of Landsborough State School art and healthy cooking demonstrations at the Seventh-day Adventist Hall, and more.

According to endorsed One Nation candidate for the State seat of Caloundra, Rod Jones, the urgent concerns and important issues in Caloundra, Landsborough and Beerwah will now be addressed and dealt with if he is elected. During the recent launch of his campaign and new campaign office at Shop 5, Centrepoint Shopping Plaza, 50 Bulcock Street, Caloundra, Mr Jones spoke of his clear desire to represent all people in the region and expressed a firm interest in all of the most important regional issues that he says have been neglected for so long by all of the other political parties; issues that affect the lives of thousands of residents. “The list is so long and is topped by cost of living, roads and infrastructure, employment of youth and adults, current law and order, also protection of our children,” said Mr Jones. “These are the most important and spoken of concerns for residents. Therefore, I am going to work hard on those issues – and deliver! “The increase in cost of living is, in general, maybe the most important concern and the cost of electricity in particular. “Too many family providers are seeking employment outside the region placing financial strain on their family and affecting their personal relations. “Roads and infrastructure are falling well behind the pace of development, including rail.

New Caloundra campaign office for Rod Jones, One Nation candidate “It is an important issue as we waste considerable amounts of time stuck in our cars on congested roads. This translates into considerable losses in productivity and, for residents, increases pressure on businesses and family budgets. “Drug use and alcohol abuse is another issue that needs to be seriously addressed, as well as domestic violence and homelessness.” The reason Mr Jones decided to campaign as a One Nation party candidate is to help ordinary people. “The party is all about ordinary people, they are the grass roots of our economy and prosperity. The two major parties have lost their way and they do not listen to people's needs,” he said. “They made and make decisions that ignore the way we should progress as a society and nation. Our purpose is to listen to people and activate direction to change the stagnant system we've got, and to change it for the better for all Queenslanders. We need more transparency, honesty, realistic and sustainable development.”

NBN towers by the dozen

Twelve new planning applications were lodged with Sunshine Coast Council last week, seeking to establish a network of nbn fixed wireless broadband towers across the Hinterland. The locations identified in this round of development applications are: • Old Peachester Road, Peachester (MCU17/2007) – a 40m monopole • 54 Red Road, Beerburrum (MCU17/2002) – a 50m lattice tower • 75 Link Road, Glass House Mountains (MCU17/2004) – a 50m monopole • Burgess Avenue, Maleny (MCU17/2005) – a 45m monopole • 89 Sinclairs Lane, Balmoral Ridge (MCU17/2001) – a 40m monopole • 127 Appaloosa Drive, Conondale (MCU17/2006) – a 40m monopole. Six other sites outside the readership area include Weyba Downs, Verrierdale, Yandina, Valdora and two at Kureelpa. NBN say in their planning documents that the rural residential communities surrounding the larger regional townships contrast poorly both in terms of broadband ADSL availability and broadband ADSL quality. According to the Federal Government’s National Map website, which displays broadband availability and quality, the localities where the towers are planned rate very poorly – many rating D or E (with E being the lowest possible). More information on the local towers will be published in GC&M News in the coming weeks.

Ewen Maddock Dam back on line Ewen Maddock Water Treatment Plant (WTP) was brought back on line last Friday as part of a range of projects to improve water supply security for the Sunshine Coast after consecutive failed wet seasons. Minister for Water Supply Mark Bailey said low inflows into Sunshine Coast dams last summer meant Seqwater had to increase the capacity of the Water Grid to move water to the Sunshine Coast. “Over last summer, poor rainfall resulted in record low inflows into the Sunshine Coast’s major dam Baroon Pocket. The hot dry summer, combined with increased water use, saw Baroon Pocket dam levels fall below 45% capacity,’’ Mr Bailey said. “To increase water supply security for the Sunshine Coast, Seqwater is undertaking a range of projects to further improve the performance of the Water Grid and its ability to move water across South East Queensland.’’ Mr Bailey said that because of the government’s investment in climate-resilient water sources and the Water Grid, South East Queensland was better able to respond when poor summer rainfall left some of the region’s dams in worse shape than others. “In South East Queensland, we live in a climate of extremes. Last summer was a perfect example where our dams on the Gold Coast were

brimming and overflowing, while our Sunshine Coast storages, particular Baroon Pocket, were experiencing record low inflows,’’ Mr Bailey said. “By building one of Australia’s first Water Grids, it means we now have the flexibility to change supply sources when we need to and move drinking water across our region.’’ Bringing Ewen Maddock WTP back on line, was one of eight key water infrastructure projects which are underway to increase the capacity of the Water Grid to move water to the Sunshine Coast. Ewen Maddock WTP facts • The plant was built in 2009 in response to the millennium drought water crisis to provide an alternative drinking water supply to the Sunshine Coast. • After the drought ended, high water security across the region prompted the decision to place the plant into a standby mode in 2013. • In order to reduce water demand on Baroon Pocket, work has been carried out over the past three months to bring the Ewen Maddock plant back online. • Once online, the plant has capacity to supply an average of 14.3 million litres of water each day to the Sunshine Coast area, drawing raw water from the Ewen Maddock Dam storage.

park with these materials being sourced from just a stone’s throw away. Work will also start on an upgrade of the playground at Pioneer Park in Landsborough on Tuesday July 11, commencing with the removal of the worn out wooden fort. This project will include a replacement play hut with an accessible ramp and slides for all abilities, an additional four-seat rocker, a birds nest swing, new rubber softfall, park seating, sandstone seating walls and garden bed planting. Although construction will take around 12 weeks, a substantial part of the playground will remain open for the majority of the construction period. Cr Baberowski said the $300,000 project was part of the community’s vision to be a great family-friendly destination and is funded through council’s capital works program.

Sunshine Coast Councillor Rick Baberowski recently reminded GC&M News that in the 2017/18 Budget there has been significant funding for exciting playground and parkland developments in Glass House, Landsborough and Beerwah. Work on Stage 3 of the Glass House Mountains District Park, which sits behind the houses in Coonowrin Road between Page Street and Gardner Street, has been moving ahead in the last couple of weeks. This stage of the project works includes a shelter shed, seating and a barbeque, a new playground, shade sail and stone pitched walls, as well as pathways and improved drainage, a fenced dog off leash area, bench seats overlooking the lake, landscaping and removal of the old playground and shade sail. Stage 4 works are planned for later in the year and will include an amenities building, an entry statement, a 16 bay car park and an upgrade to services. At the end of last week Sunshine Coast Council officers reported that the shelter and playground works are well underway and starting to take shape and the old playground has also been decommissioned and removed. The fenced dog off leash area is quite advanced and will be the first element completed and a good portion of footpaths are down and the rest will be set out and poured this week. BEERWAH

DENTURE CLINIC

The fire ant hunt begins in Beerwah Community engagement officers from the National Red Introduced Fire Ant Eradication Program were kept busy last Thursday at their fire ant display in Beerwah. Set up in response to the discovery of a nest of fire ants in the Coochin Twins estate off Old Gympie Road, the first infestation ever found on the Sunshine Coast, the display had a steady stream of locals eager to see what the fuss was all about. The perspex box of live fire ants gave people an excellent visual of what the serious pests actually look like. Other community awareness activities include road signage, an information briefing for council and key industry personnel, mail delivery of fire ant identification information to over 3,000 Beerwah residents, and targeting local schools and community groups to distribute information through their networks. Biosecurity officers will be undertaking ground surveillance for a 2-3 week period, according to the National Red Imported Fire Ant Eradication Program Director Geoff Kent. “Biosecurity Queensland officers and fire ant odour detection dogs remain in Beerwah to check areas of high risk of infestation within one kilometre of the site,” Mr Kent said. “The original ant specimens taken from the site underwent genetic testing and it has been determined the nest is related to the Brisbanebased colonies.

Business News Maleny Lodge Residences

Business changes hands

The owner of Maleny Lodge, Doug Michael, has announced the addition of ‘The Residences’ at 58 Maple Street, Maleny. The four exclusive properties are to be located on land at the rear of the Lodge. They will take advantage of a very private town centre position with north east aspect and unique rainforest with a spring-fed stream with an abundance of natural features. The Lodge itself will be enhanced with better vehicle access, more onsite parking for guests, and renovations to enhance the heritage of the Lodge, built in 1907. Doug said that over the years there had been some additions to the Lodge that have not been in keeping with the original 1907 build. These include a small bedroom at the rear of the house, a shed at the end of the driveway and a pool at the rear. These will be removed to allow for the addition of the Residences. Sunshine Coast Heritage Architect Roger Todd has carried out an extensive investigation and report, and his recommendations on the renovations will ensure the history and heritage of the Lodge will be kept for future generations. Landscape and Environmental Architect Mark Bizzell has created an environmental landscape plan to enhance the forest at the rear and retain a large Bunya Pine that will be now be visible from Maple Street. The Liquid Amber tree along the side of the driveway at the Lodge will also be retained to

By Lea Parkes After 35 years operating a business in Beerwah, Paul Kellie has sold Beerwah Stationery to longtime local Kylie Cherry and the first thing on his to-do list will be a holiday at the beach. Paul was keen to thank the local communities that have supported his business over all these years, and would like to encourage people to keep supporting Kylie as she takes the business into the future. When GC&M News asked Paul about what he will miss most, he reckons it will be the local people as they are the best thing about Beerwah. He will miss the social interaction, with people just dropping in to say hello or talk about things happening around town. No doubt Kylie will have plenty of locals who will be making sure she feels very welcome as a new business owner. Maleny Lodge owner Doug Michael, with daughter Eloise, who manages the business complement the two Liquid Amber trees on the footpath on Maple Street. F3 Architects of Maleny have gone to great lengths in the design to ensure the retention of these trees and retain the heritage of the property with the design of the Residences being in keeping with the heritage theme. Full details of the Residences plans, etc, can be found on the Sunshine Coast Regional Council PD online website.

Update with Spencer Shaw Chamber President

Global success for Happy Snacks The Happy Snack Company is kicking international goals following their investment in and relocation to new facilities in Landsborough. Following their move in 2015 from their original premises in Maleny to the new purpose built $2 million facility, business has increased three fold with an additional 10 staff employed in the business, as well as recently winning The Healthy Food Guide magazine awards for their products. Managing director of The Happy Snack Company Craig Agnew said the Sunshine Coast’s Landsborough location was the ideal site to grow an international business. “Our goal is to develop an internationally successful business and brand, and the move to the Landsborough facility has allowed us to grow and connect with international markets,” Mr Agnew said. “Growth is so strong that we are currently investing in further capacity to meet the increasing demand for our products. “Sunshine Coast Council provided us with a lot of support during the identification and construction of our Landsborough facility, as well as providing ongoing business support and connection to relevant council events and programs.” Economic Development and Innovation Portfolio Councillor Steve Robinson said the success of The Happy Snack Company highlighted the benefits and growth opportunities of doing business on the Sunshine Coast. The Happy Snack Company produces roasted chick pea and broad bean snack products which are sold in the health food section of leading Australian and New Zealand retailers. Last year their products won the Healthy Food Magazine 2016 Best AllergyFriendly Snack and Best Packaged Kid’s Lunchbox Awards. Looks like the good weather for events is set to continue on from the Maleny Show, with Muscle on the Mountain enjoying sunshine and Knitfest looking to enjoy similar good weather this coming weekend (as I write this). Last month I thought it would have been a case of speaking too soon about what a warm winter we’re having, but this week has seen the temperatures rise yet again. Hopefully we’re due for a bit more of the cooler weather before winter draws to a close, to enjoy our fire places, cosy evenings and a warming tipple (as your taste dictates). Thank you, Desley Malone for her talk on the history of Maleny at our last network breakfast and to our hosts Heather and her team at the Orangery – a great venue. For me, Desley’s presentation gives us a reminder as business people, of the progression and development of Maleny as a commercial hub on the Blackall Range over the last century. We follow in the footsteps of those enterprising early settlers who established a dairy industry (that is still thriving) and a community that is set in one of the most beautiful places on the planet, that we are lucky to call home and the rest of the world wants to visit! Coming up this month our networking breakfast is at The Garden, at Cairncross Corner and we celebrate some of our local business legends, in particular our local winners from the Hinterland Business Awards and also the Maleny and District Credit Union. And it is very timely that we hear from a locally based financial institution (that is committed to our town), in a time of upheaval when the larger banks and credit unions are disappearing from towns across the country. Keep up the good business, Maleny!

Community News Indigenous cultural experience

Mooloolah Students from Prep to Year 6 recently attended the annual Goombuckar Creations incursion. The experience helps to teach students about the original owners of our land and is a chance for them to have a hands-on experience discussing things like The Dreamtime, artworks, see exhibitions and they even had a chance for games. The students learned about the local Aboriginal culture, places, people and the stories of our region including those of the Gubbi Gubbi people, how they survived off the land, as well as their Dreamtime stories about the Glass House Mountains. They enjoyed art time and learned Indigenous symbols and even got to play around with body art and some students created message sticks and others got to throw a boomerang. The students came back from the incursion excited and talking about the land's Aboriginal heritage.

Great prizes in photographic competition

If you’ve taken some great photographs recently and would like a chance to get them into the public eye, here’s the perfect opportunity – enter them in the annual Beerwah Charity Sports Photographic Competition. And you’ll be helping to raise money for a very good cause with all proceeds from the event going to Cancer Council Queensland. Leanda Talks Ahh, winter… as it brings out the heaters, extra layers of clothing and indoor activity it also brings changes in our body and mind to accommodate for the winter elements. Biting winds, dry central heating and less fresh Leanda Weynton air can create a broad Naturopath ND and range of problems for Yoga Teacher the body, from sore eyes to cracked lips, dry skin and achy joints, a congested head, blocked ears and nose from a buildup of mucus. Although some of us may enjoy these cooler months as it helps the internal temperature, the fact is winter does little favours for our body because our immune system is in protection mode to help keep bacteria and viruses away. This is why the above symptoms can occur. The aim is deep relaxation and also to balance the flow of Prana or Life Energy. Nasya is an Ayurvedic treatment for cleansing the nasal passages. It is a process where oil is administered through the nostrils. The Nasya procedure is simple and is similar to the use of nasal drops to relieve congestion. www.thehealthyguru.com.au/therapies/head-faceneck-body-work-therapy Ayurvedic body wrap and Ayurvedic oil infusion These holistic treatments are designed to offer therapeutic benefits to the whole body. For thousands of local men and women who have served their country in the armed forces, it is apparent that one of the most challenging battles comes in adapting to everyday civilian life after completing their service. RSL Sunshine Coast District President Tony Ferris said the strong sense of isolation often experienced by returned service men and women was highly concerning, and had prompted RSL Sunshine Coast and Regional District Branch to host the Veteran, Families and Community Expo on Sunday July 23 at the Lake Kawana Community Centre. “For many who leave the armed forces there is an overwhelming feeling that their loved ones and those around them will never really understand the world they have come from which, in many cases, is true,” Mr Ferris said. “Whether you have served in war zones or have spent your life on military bases, the world our veterans are accustomed to operates quite differently to that of a civilian, and that adjustment can be very difficult – not only for the veteran but also for their loved ones.” “Our inaugural event last year demonstrated there was a need to provide a forum for veterans of any age and their families located between Caboolture and Gympie to learn more about managing this transition.” “Whether they attend the event for an hour or the full day, there will be a great deal of information on offer from more than 50 exhibitors and eight keynote speakers who form part of this year’s program.” The event will provide information on everything from services such as assistance dogs and transport options to community activities such as surf lifesaving, volunteering and woodworking.

Tony Ferris, President Sunshine Coast and Regional District RSL Mr Ferris said he encouraged both older veterans and younger service men and women to attend the forum, with the key topics relevant for veterans of all ages. “We are keen to reach as many people as possible and believe that the forum will provide another opportunity for veterans to access information surrounding health services, the provision of emergency accommodation and transport, and dealing with mental health issues such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). “It is not a pre-requisite to be an RSL member or a returned service man or woman to participate in this event as we know family, friends and the wider community will also be keen to learn what support and services are available.” The expo is a free event and will take place from 10am to 4pm on Sunday July 23. There will be a sausage sizzle, coffee cart and fun activities for the children as well. For more information visit www.rslsunshinecoast.org/rsl-events.

Local Heroes Grants Round three for the Member for Glass House’s Local Heroes Grants for 2017 closed on June 12 and Andrew Powell said the competition was as tough as ever deciding on who should receive the four $250 grants this round. “There are so many deserving nominations put forward each round and it’s always hard to choose who the beneficiaries should be, but once again all of the recipients in this round are very worthy,” Andrew said. Winners for round three included Beerburrum State School to assist with costs towards plaques for their upcoming Centenary Celebrations, and Nathan Dodd who is travelling with the Australian Intellectual Disability Cricket Team to the Mini

A LITTLE HERITAGE TOWN WITH FRIENDLY LOCALS

We have made it to Steep Point, the most westerly point of the mainland. This completes our crossing. We have travelled from Cape Byron via Alice Springs, Gary Junction Road, Marble Bar and then on to Port Hedland. Steep Point is south of Hedland. We have encountered all kinds of road conditions including severe corrugations and very soft sandy sections. The trip though has been very enjoyable – changing landscapes, and the changeable road conditions Damien and Thelma are travelling from Australia’s guaranteed that. most easterly point to most westerly point Gary Junction Road was featured on the TV program, ‘The World's Worst Roads’. It isn't the best road, but certainly not the worst. We are now travelling south to Perth. Damian Petrie Beerwah

Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme

The Maleny Blackall Range Lions Club is now a registered unit of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme in Queensland. Award Leader Judy Brodie said the award scheme is an internationally recognised program for young people, building their skills to equip them for life and work. By creating opportunities for young people to develop skills, get physically active, give service and experience adventure, the Award can play a critical role in their development. The Club was now able to offer all sections of the Award to all young people on the Coast and Hinterland between the ages of 11½ and their 25th birthday. “If a member of your family is interested in getting involved in something different, developing new skills and achieving more than they ever dreamed possible, this could be what they are looking for,” Judy said. There are two levels of progression in this Australian award and participants must be at least 11½ years old to enrol. The International Award is for youth from the age of 14 years and there are three levels of achievement, Bronze, Silver and Gold, all with four basic sections: service, skill, physical recreation and adventurous journey. The Gold level also incorporates a Residential Project to broaden horizons and open participants’ eyes to the world. It’s easy to get started. Depending on age and experience, the choice of level starts with just three months on-line logged experience in each section for Bronze, six months for Silver and 12 months for Gold. Adventurous journeys can be on foot, bike, canoe, etc, but always in a supervised group and are for two, three and four night durations plus practice journeys to ensure that participants have adequate knowledge and experience to complete them safely. Check out the Award at www.qld.gov.au/youth/be-involved-have-your-say/ duke-of-ed-about/ . All enquiries can be directed to the Lions Club on email mbrdukes@ lionsq3.org.au. If you are already a member of a sporting team, cadets, youth organisation or involved in the community, then most, if not all your current involvement can be cross-credited. Just ask how you can achieve recognition twice for the same activity.

SCARS supports cost of cat desexing

Sunshine Coast residents with a pension card or healthcare card can now purchase a $49 cat de-sexing voucher from Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge (SCARS) between Tuesday and Sunday, 10am to 5pm, at 28 Sippy Creek Road, Tanawha (closed public holidays). Penny Brischke from SCARS said, “We are committed to helping the community to reduce the amount of unwanted, stray and abandoned cats and kittens. “SCARS funds this program itself, committing over $25,000 to it every year. The $49 voucher represents a significant discount on the procedure cost for desexing a male or female cat. “The vets charge us a subsidised price, at least 51% discount for female cats and a 15% discount for male cats which is extremely generous. “Once you have purchased your voucher, please assist the vets as much as possible by contacting them early, working within their schedule, advising them that you are a voucher holder, and presenting your cat for the procedure in a healthy condition. “Each vet will have a slightly different pre-operation routine, so please contact them and they will advise you of their requirements.” Local vets providing the service are: District Vets Maleny, 7 Myrtle Street, Maleny, 5499 9077. A Message from our CEO Bob Malcolm Information Session 17th August @ 5.30pm at MCU. RSVP info@mcu.com.au or give us a call.

News about bank closures has been front of mind in Maleny over the past month or so, with the ANZ closing in August and Suncorp in September. Your local credit union is here to stay. We are and will continue to be supervised and protected under the same rules and regulations as all banks, building societies and credit unions ensuring that members are offered safe and secure products for all their financial needs. We are a strong community focused credit union and value our members, without them we would not be here. It’s through our members referring us onto others that keeps us growing. You will find a difference when dealing with the credit union, we answer the phone, not a machine asking you to select a number. We have products to suit everyone whether you are saving, investing or borrowing. Our members financial well-being is important to us and to ensure they are kept up to date with changes in the marketplace we hold information sessions in a relaxed after work environment where you will have your questions answered on the session topic. After reading this page you may have questions and we would be happy to answer them. Alternatively, we have decided to hold an information session about MCU. Come along and meet us, find out what we are about and what we have to offer to you.

MEMBER GETS MEMBER PROGRAM We reward our members for approved referrals. For an approved and drawn loan we give $100 cash deposited into our members savings account PLUS a $50 voucher from a local business. This is our way of supporting local businesses. For members that refer new members we will shout them a cup of coffee as a thank you!

thanks to our FINANCIAL LITERACY WORKBOOK created as a free teachers and student resource for local high schools.

MCU Charitable Trust is a registered charity and a tax-deductible tax-exempt Trust established by MCU to assist financing and support for local community groups through a grants program. Since its inception it has put over $250,000 back into our community.

MEMBERS FEEDBACK Sandra has assisted my husband and I in a way that no other financial institution, or lender has. Sandra is an extremely knowledgeable woman, who has gone above and beyond of what we would expect from a lender, and far exceeded the service that we have received in the past. I would highly recommend Sandra's services to anyone looking to buy or refinance!!! Claire and Brock

In May we launched our Clubs Rewards Program where every loan drawn down at MCU benefits a club of your choice within the program boundaries. Congratulations to Karen Muir and the Maleny Rangers Football Club. Karen financed her new home with Maleny Credit Union and she choose the football club to benefit. They received $250!

Contributed by Gweneth Brooks It would seem that not only does the Australian Financial year end on June 30 each year, it also hails the exchange of executive committees for the many community clubs in the area and Glasshouse Country Toastmasters is no exception. At the meeting held on June 22, the club changed over its executive committee for the next twelve months.

It was a very special and exciting meeting because the club not only welcomed in the new committee but it also celebrated fifteen years of being a daytime club. The crowning glory for the club and for the district was the presence and participation in the proceedings by the International President of Toastmasters International, Mike Storkey. Mike was assisted by his wife, Lesley, to present the 15 year membership badges to Esther Frizzo and Martine Goedhart. The club was also honoured to hear a speech from Marilyn Freeman who will represent Australia in the forthcoming International Public Speaker Competition to be held in Vancouver, Canada, in August this year. Club members prepared a sumptuous morning tea/ light lunch after the conclusion of the meeting. Congratulations to Martine Goedhart who is our incoming club president. For further information about the club please contact Martine on 5496 9855 or secretary, Barbara, on 5494 0321.

See www.stickytickets. com.au/51923.

Students sleep with the sharks Contributed by Debbie Roberts Beerburrum State School students from Years 2 and 3 enjoyed an overnight stay at Sealife Mooloolaba in the week leading up to the school holidays. They learnt about marine life cycles and the importance of keeping our waterways free of rubbish so as to not pollute our oceans and harm the sea life. Whilst they enjoyed their whole adventure, the undisputed favourite activity was getting to ‘Sleep with the Sharks’.

Preps celebrate end of semester Contributed by Michelle Lenz

Prep students at Mooloolah State School celebrated the end of the first semester with an exciting puppet show.

The students have worked hard to create their puppets in class and they practiced a fairy tale to present to their parents and families as a celebration of their learning throughout the semester. They painted their own backgrounds and worked hard on remembering their lines for the show. They did an amazing job and the parents were extremely proud and amazed at their efforts. They re-enacted fairy tales like Jack and the Bean Stalk, Three Billy Goats Gruff, Goldilocks and the Three Bears and Hansel and Gretel. It was truly a fabulous moment watching the students perform with enthusiasm and use fantastic expression and improvisation.

Plan for a productive gap year at USC Open Day Approved soccer training for kids aged 18 months -7 years

FREE TRIAL Classes Saturday Mornings at Landsborough Primary School

Year 12 students who are considering taking a break from study in 2018 can find out how to make the most of their gap year during a special session at USC’s Open Day on Sunday July 23. A panel discussion on ‘Is a gap year a good idea?’ will be just one of many activities on offer at Open Day, which is expected to attract thousands of prospective students and their families from across the Sunshine Coast and further afield. The forum will look at what needs to be considered when planning a gap year, including how to save money, build skills and gain information about career options. It will feature sound advice from a Finance academic and the mother of successful gap-year takers. A current student will also speak about USC’s Study Overseas program, which enables students to spend some time at one of 70 partner institutions around the world while earning credit towards a degree. Open Day will be held from 9.30am to 2pm at USC’s Sippy Downs campus and will have the theme ‘First year starts here’. It is aimed at giving students the information and tools they need to make the most of their first year at uni. Visitors will be able to inspect the campus, get questions answered and learn more about the study programs they’re interested in by chatting

one-on-one with USC academics. They can sit in on real lectures across a wide range of disciplines to see what uni life is like, and attend information sessions that outline study programs and career opportunities. There will also be other panel discussions that will focus on: careers that are likely to be in demand in the future; how to support a child, partner or friend when they start university; and how USC’s High Performance Student Athlete Program works. For more details about USC’s Open Day go to www.usc.edu.au/open-day.

ElectedRepresentatives Andrew Wallace

Federal Member for Fisher One year of fighting for Fisher It is hard to believe that it is twelve months since the Federal Election. I said that I would be a hard-working MP and I can honestly say that I have given my best. I haven spoke 95 times in Parliament about issues that matter to the Coast in my first 17 sitting weeks. I have been part of more than 200 community meetings and events, practically worn a path in the carpet between my office and the Ministers’ wing in Canberra and brought ministers to visit the Coast 14 times. My mission is to help to make the Sunshine Coast the place to be for education, employment and retirement. We cannot achieve that without being able to move around our region more easily. I am proud that in my first year we have delivered funding for $1.6 billion worth of upgrades on the Bruce Highway in our region. In education, we delivered an unprecedented package of $266 million in extra funding for the 35 schools in Fisher and the federallyfunded placements needed for a medical school at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital. In employment, we cut more than $1 billion worth of Government red tape nationally and delivered a tax cut for 20,000 small businesses in Fisher so that they can afford to hire more local people. We also introduced the ‘Youth Jobs PaTH’ program which is already leading to more young people being employed here. Successful businesses need great internet access, and I am particularly pleased to have played a major role in facilitating an agreement between the Sunshine Coast Council and nbn to help people throughout the Hinterland to get high speed broadband as soon as possible. In retirement, I secured $5 million for treatment and research programs into dementia and suicide prevention at the Thompson Institute in Birtinya. We also delivered 140 new residential aged care placements in Fisher, and Energy Assistance Payments for 27,000 local pensioners. I am very aware of the things that are yet to be delivered. We have had a very successful first year, but I will go on fighting for Fisher in the years to come. My priorities will be the duplication of the railway line between Beerburrum and Nambour, high speed internet and mobile coverage for the Hinterland, action on energy prices, and funding for local veterans’ mental health care. I always welcome suggestions and feedback and I encourage you to write to my office, email or telephone me today to let me know what you think. Nationally, I am proud of the values the Coalition Government has demonstrated. We restored the integrity and significance of Australian citizenship, kept our borders secure while showing compassion to Syria’s refugees, repaired the processes of the Human Rights Commission, and restored prudence to the Federal Budget. State Member for Glass House No good news for Glass House in the 2017 State Budget

I’m bitterly disappointed that none of the key regional infrastructure priorities for the Sunshine Coast or Moreton Bay have been incorporated in the 2017 State Budget. There’s been no funding allocated to the North Coast Rail Duplication despite it being identified by Building Queensland as the only budget-readyinfrastructure project in the entire state. Nor has there been funding for the Mooloolah River Interchange which would open up access to the new University Hospital precinct. Key priorities in the Glass House electorate didn’t get a look in either. I will continue to fight for local projects that were neglected including: • Maleny-Kenilworth Road upgrades at Cambroon • An intersection upgrade at Kilcoy-Beerwah Road and Old Gympie Road, Beerwah • Bridge replacement at King John Creek on Beerburrum Road • Flashing school zone lights at Peachester and Glass House Mountains State School • A contribution to the development of a “Drop and Go” at Maleny State School and the proposed Maleny Indoor Aquatic Centre.

Important funds raised for homeless on the Sunshine Coast

On June 29 I joined a group of local pollies, business people and community members to sleep rough in the name of charity. We camped out on the beach in front of the Maroochydore Surf Club to participate in the St Vincent de Paul Corporate and Community Sleepout 2017. It was cold, wet and uncomfortable and with only a piece of cardboard to sleep on, or build a shelter with, it gave us a taste of what over 1,500 men, women and children on the Sunshine Coast endure daily. Excitingly, the 80 participants collectively raised over $125,000 to support Vinnies in their tireless work with our homeless and those at risk of becoming homeless. It is not too late to donate, so if you can spare a few dollars please go to https://donate.grassrootz.com/ vinniesqld/vinnies-corp-and-community-sleepoutsunshine-coast/andrew-powell-mp.

This wonderful event will include writers’ workshops, poetry performances, children’s book displays and more across a number of libraries and venues across Maleny.

Say hello to velo

Our gorgeous hinterland will be showcased this weekend, July 13-16, when the inaugural Velothon cycling event, featuring hundreds of riders, comes to Australia for the first time. With a three-day ride covering 361km and more than 5km of climbing or a one-day ride of either 95km or 155km and up to 2km of climbing, the event will see up to 600 participants riding from the hinterland to the headland. This event has been welcomed by local chambers of commerce and we thank local residents and businesses for their support of this fantastic weekend.

Fire ants found in Beerwah

The nest was reported to Biosecurity Queensland by a vigilant member of the public. Should you require further information about the fire ant eradication activity in your area, please contact Biosecurity Queensland on 13 25 23.

Budget delivers road upgrades

Road resealing works have been completed on Nicklin Road and Brudo Court in Palmwoods and Jones Street in the Mooloolah Valley. Rural roads are always high on my agenda, so I’m also very pleased to announce that this year’s budget includes $500,000 for the longawaited upgrade of McGilchrist Road in Eudlo to a sealed standard, and $85,000 for survey and design work of the north section in Chevallum. This budget will also deliver $50,000 to upgrade and seal a section of Perrins Road in Diamond Valley and $29,500 to upgrade and seal a section of Perrins Road in Eudlo.

Beauty& Beauty&Wellbeing Wellbeing Are you getting enough veggies? Queensland adults are failing to fill their plates with enough veggies, with 93% of adults not eating the recommended five servings a day. While adults on the Sunshine Coast were more likely to fill their plates with vegetables than those across the state, it only amounts to 8.1% per cent who met the recommended daily intake. Cancer Council Queensland CEO Chris McMillan said adults were putting their short and long term health at serious risk by leaving vegetables off the menu. “The eating habits of everyday Queenslanders are of great concern,” Ms McMillan said. “Adults should eat five serves of vegetables and two serves of fruit a day to ensure overall wellbeing and reduce the risk of chronic diseases,

including some cancers. “While 57% of Queensland adults eat the recommended two serves of fruit a day, it’s alarming that a meagre 7% of adults eat enough vegetables. “It’s vital we’re increasing our vegetable intake to improve our health, and also model healthy habits to the younger generation. “A serve of vegetables is one cup of raw salad vegetables or half a cup of cooked pumpkin – and a serve of fruit is one medium apple or banana, or a cup of canned fruit, with no added sugar. “More than 27,000 Queenslanders are diagnosed with cancer each year – up to one third of those cases could be prevented through lifestyle changes, including maintaining a healthy diet.

Acupuncture

“Next time you’re plating up for breakfast, lunch or dinner, think about the variety of foods you’re including in your meal. “Opt for foods that are low in sugar, saturated fat and salt and be sure to include plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, grains, low fat dairy options, and lean proteins.” For more information about Cancer Council Queensland, and healthy eating, visit cancerqld. org.au or phone 13 11 20.

You Said It Green waste fees

It would appear that the amount you get charged for green waste disposal is seemingly up to whoever is on the gate. Recently I was charged $20, which surprised me as for the last couple of years, I have always been charged $15, so I asked if the fees had been increased. I was informed that the fees will be going up in the near future – so why was I already being charged $5 extra for a trailer load of green waste if the fees haven’t gone up yet? Apparently my load was above the level of the top of the trailer. I have been taking my green waste to the tip at least once a month for the past couple of years, the loads have always been above the top of the trailer, and I have never been charged extra because of that fact. So why all of a sudden have I been charged extra for what I would have called a standard trailer load? I can’t help but wonder why we are charged a fee for dumping green waste at all, when the Moreton Bay Regional Council allow their rate payers to dispose of green waste for free. The answer is, they give us free mulch. I would rather have free disposal, and pay $20 dollars for a trailer load of poor quality mulch. As a suggestion, why don’t we adopt the same practice of some of the councils in Adelaide, and allow one load of green waste, (regardless of it being above the top of the trailer), for free during the first seven days of every month, at least then people have a choice, and if they then choose to take waste to the tip outside those times, they will at least be prepared and expect to pay a fee. Shame on Abbott again

I feel ashamed Mr Abbott is doing a Labor Party trick in trying to oust Mr Turnbull. At least the Labor Party gave more consideration before doing Mr Abbott’s tricks. I’ve always said I was a swinging voter. I respect each party for their positions, but I do not respect Mr Abbott at a time that this country is under threat from terrorism, albeit a small amount I hope, I wish – and I respect the Prime Minister at this time has many things to handle. I believe it is time for Mr Abbott to go home and think about his family, whatever the threats are, his discord within the party is unbelievable to this country right now. He needs a reality check to think about the future, not his demise. It happened and it’s gone. Give the government the chance to save our country first, take into account what we need as individual people and care about the future for everyone. Yvonne Taylor Beerwah

Rural atmosphere

The issue of the Sunshine Coast Council "failing to retain a rural atmosphere" raised recently by J.T. Weeks comes as no surprise. The council's Dwelling House Code is carefully structured and administered to ensure the council's stated Performance Objectives are not even considered during a neighbour's development process. No reporting is required or responsibility allocated for the achievement of their stated objectives. Building site decisions are monitored by a certifier (paid indirectly by the owner) based solely on council's Acceptable Outcomes. The council's Performance Outcome objectives stated in their Dwelling House Code, of 26

not adversely impacting on the amenity of a neighbouring premises, of having regard to overshadowing, privacy and overlooking, views and vistas, are fairy tales. How can their objectives possibly be achieved when the Sunshine Coast Council has the closest building to the boundary setbacks of any of the surrounding councils? They have abdicated their responsibility by ensuring the resident does not have the chance for a fair outcome from the impact of a neighbouring development. Added to this, the Queensland Government Right to Information Act ensures that you are totally excluded from the process. I have asked both the minister responsible, Jackie Trad, and the Premier, why is Queensland the only state in Australia that requires this legislation? The answer must also be covered by the Act as I am yet to receive a specific answer to this question. James Maleny

Council economics

I am at a loss to understand our Council’s economic rationale. On one hand they spend $50m on a solar farm to save us $22.1m over 30 years. This equates to $736,667 pa. At the stroke of a pen they wipe out that saving by closing the Mooloolaba Beach caravan park. This park is so popular that it has close to 100% occupancy rate. Holidaymakers I have spoken to rate it as one of the best locations in the country. Due to its popularity the Council site fees are at least $55 per night for 34 sites. That is $682,550 pa. When you include the amount of money spent locally by the tourists who stay there, it would easily exceed the savings of the solar farm. The council want to turn the site into a park with a sea water pool. This will not come cheap and will not generate any income. Due to the lack of parking it will not be able to attract additional visitors. Where is the financial benefit to ratepayers? Derek Browning Glass House Mountains

Transport issues

We hear it all the time, Queensland Rail will soon be starting on our new rail system, when this happens who knows. QR has cut some of the services to the Nambour timetable already to top up Redcliffe’s new line, mainly due to the system being unable handle the extra load, plus a shortage of drivers. Why not upgrade/renew this system? We still don’t know the final outcome of the Glass House Railway Bridge. I still have no report back regarding the inspection dates over the years beginning from 1960 when the bridge was constructed – it has been over two years now, maybe one day? All heavy vehicles crossing this bridge must have a Performance Based Standard (PBS) National Heavy Vehicle Regulator. It would be interesting one day to see a Transport Department inspection vehicle parked there checking heavy vehicles. Hinterland light rail will be the same story, QR dragging the chain again and State Government in-house bickering. As for the Sunshine Coast Council’s Transport Levy money being shifted into the Transport Futures fund, it sounds like one big slush fund to me. Richard Thomson Glass House Mountains

Local railway crossing issues

Re: Ken Dyer’s recent letter “Landsborough overpass needs a rethink”. A year ago I was in conversation with two people who said they were Queensland Railway engineers. When I walked away it was the impression that they had a one track mind. Leave the rail lines alone. Force people to sell their land, do not consider the effect their decisions would have on the nearby business community. Their proposal for the Barrs Road crossing is not acceptable to us locals. Why, we will not be allowed to turn right. That is why we use that crossing. One statement they made seemed stupid to me. Duplication would not result in major rail infrastructure costs. I was at the Landsborough meeting and put forward the concept of lowering the rail line. There are a lot of stations in this state that are below the surrounding land. Benefits – the roads stay as they are, people to not lose their properties. Business stays as is. The current rail noise level would be reduced. Many years ago I was taught to think laterally. At the time, that resulted in alternative proposals being submitted to those who controlled the money. If the locals do not stand up and be counted you will get what they want, not what suits your area. L.R. Brumley Glass House Mountains

Garden vandalism

Recently some home gardens in Nicholls Avenue, Beerwah were vandalised. People returned home to find plants pulled out, with some plants also stolen. It takes a lot of hard work to establish and maintain a garden, not an easy task for older folk. There are a number of reasons why people put so much toiling effort into their gardens. Sure, one reason is to make their own properties look nicer. The other reason is because they take pride in their town and want to make it an even better place to live. We don’t know who the garden wrecker is, but come on, fair go. All you’ve achieved is to put some older folk through more back breaking toil. Name supplied Beerwah

Cooling sun not a threat

Jon Woodlands (GC&M News, July 5) makes a series of incorrect statements about the climate and the Sun, claiming we face global cooling and not global warming due to a new Maunder Minimum. In brief, a Maunder Minimum represents a tiny 0.25% decline in solar radiation at the Earth's surface. That's how stable solar activity is, meaning that temperatures won't be lowered in any appreciable way. In fact, several studies in recent years have investigated what impact another grand solar minimum would have on global surface temperatures, and the results were between 0.09°C and 0.26°C, which does not begin to touch the 2°C to 8°C global warming we have coming! Moreover, a grand solar minimum would not be a permanent change and eventually solar activity rises once again. Thus any tiny cooling caused by a solar minimum would only be temporary. Thanks for giving solar-minimum-barely-dent-AGW.html Unfortunately, there is a very active climate denial movement in Australia, perhaps because we are a resource-based economy. I do not know whether the climate denial is all or partly funded by the Mining Council, but I have suspicions. I see a lot of these denial letters in regional newspapers. Gerry Muller Maleny

Proposed development application

I recently had occasion to attend the Sunshine Coast University Hospital Emergency section. On my arrival there were seven ambulances parked outside equating to 14 ambulance staff waiting with their patients. The two paramedics who were attending me had waited for two hours with their previous patient, and when I was checked in I was taken to a public corridor outside a public toilet area (where seven or eight other patients and their paramedics were also waiting). We waited there for approximately two hours before being taken to a cubicle in the emergency ward (without a bed). There were three cubicles there that I could see, none of which had beds, but all with patients and their paramedics. I was told that these cubicles were not in emergency use as they did not have sufficient beds, so we were stuck in there on ambulance stretchers. We waited there for over an hour and I was then taken to another cubicle where I was handed over to the hospital nurse. Now, three hours later, the paramedics were free to return to their normal duties – this seemed to me to be a great waste of their valuable time. During the time I was waiting I was informed that there was a staff shortage in the Emergency Ward, further equipment was required to have all cubicles operational, and that upstairs, wards were empty because of lack of funds to provide the required staff and equipment. The general impression I got was that intense pressure had been applied to get this hospital opened to the public as a fully functional facility. Maybe it wasn’t as functional as we were told.

I refer to the proposed development application to extend and develop a quarry on the Beerburrum/ Woodford Road published in the GC&M News recently. Between Basset Barks and the local quarry we can experience up to a hundred or more truck and dog traffic movements a day along Coonowrin Road. This proposal for a new quarry has, I think, nothing to do with Hansons on Mt Beerwah Road. The proposal submitted by ‘Groundwork’ to the council on the behalf of the Barro Group contains information regarding projected movements of 84 dog and truck movements a day by 2024. My guess is that that will be a low estimate. The point is, do we need another quarry in the Glass House Mountains and all the hassles it brings? The area needs businesses but at what cost? The air is filled with dust now, what will it be like with another quarry in the area? Traffic movements would not really be an issue if it weren’t that council are allowing high density housing in a rural area; I cite the new estates on Poole Road. Around eighty new homes with around two cars per household are already in place. The document is comprised of 150 pages and never mentions Glass House Mountains township, but trucks travelling back and forth to the north will use the quickest route, and that cuts through Glass House Mountains township irrespective of what they say. The document emphasises the routes used will be mainly to Beerburrum and then Steve Irwin Way to the freeway one imagines. That’s fine if they are heading south, but north would entail Glass House, Beerwah, and Roys Road to the highway.

Your local Chamber of Commerce is tackling tourism to the Hinterland area!

This was my “war cry” when I became President last August. Since then Celebrate Glasshouse Country has stepped up and is actively and very successfully promoting the mountains and the Hinterland. Further, the Sunshine Coast Tourism Body, Visit Sunshine Coast, miraculously remembered our mountains and is now promoting the area internationally. What does that entail for us? Visitors need accommodation. Visitors need food outlets. Visitors want walkways, bikeways, barbeque areas, etc. Visitors need transport and/or sufficient parking. Visitors need entertainment, e.g. abseiling, mountain biking, etc. Visitors need all sorts of other stuff. The problem is – we are truly lacking most of the above. The Chamber of Commerce has organised an information evening with Visit Sunshine Coast and we are hoping that people already involved in tourism and people who are thinking about it will attend this event at Club Glass House. Please look out for the advertisement in this publication or give me a call on 0459 995 979. Ursula Starkovsky Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce

Changing faces at Glasshouse Country & Maleny News Well it is official ... our wonderful receptionist and ‘Classies Queen’ Sarah Moffat (nee TaylorFox) has decided (not surprisingly) that spending time with one of the cutest little fellas around (no, we’re not biased) is way more of a priority than coming back to work full-time with Team GC&M News. Sarah moved to Glass House Mountains eight and a half years ago and joined our team straight away, and all of us have enjoyed watching her journey from a very organised teenager, through to (finally) becoming engaged, then the bride-to-be, at long last a wife and now of course a dedicated mum. When Sarah announced that she and Shane were starting a family of their own, and that she would take maternity leave and then be returning to work, it all seemed pretty straight forward. However little Chevy Moffat had other plans and he arrived a little ahead of schedule ... well, that is, the GC&M News team’s schedule. The ad had just been put into the paper for

Glasshouse Country & Maleny News

Sarah’s replacement which would give our temporary staff member and Sarah time to have a leisurely ‘handover’. However as they say “the best laid plans of mice and men often go awry” and so it was for us, but fortunately once again things worked out well with the lovely Tara Wilson joining our team, and figuring out what the job entailed (with the assistance of the rest of us and the 32 page manual Sarah had written on her job). So when Sarah delivered the news that she would only be dropping in for visits and not to come back to work, I took a deep breath and asked Tara how she felt about making the decision to join us permanently. I suggested she take her time over the weekend to think about it – however that didn’t prove necessary, although she did wonder if, now she has been with us for nine months, would Sarah ever be giving her that handover? Most of our regular customers and contributors have met Tara by now but we just wanted to give you, our readers, the ‘full story’ and update

you all on the new love of Sarah’s life. Sarah has had quite a few visits into the office, and Chevy has charmed just about all of us, being happy to be passed around, and even falling asleep in the arms of one of his ‘doting GC&M News Aunties’. Readers may recognise Chevy from when he was our ‘Cover Baby’ at Christmas last year. No doubt he will be another local who will continue to appear in our pages over the coming years! Thanks Sarah for everything you have done to make GC&M News office a great place to work, and thanks to Tara to becoming a permanent part of our team – we are very fortunate. 27

Diversity of Land and Spirit exhibition

Two of Queensland’s most respected contemporary visual artists, Rex Backhaus-Smith and Judith Laws, have a new vibrantly enticing exhibition at the Art on Cairncross gallery until July 30. Entitled ‘Diversity of Land and Spirit’, this visually exciting exhibition draws upon the artists’ shared expeditions and experiences and the uniquely individual way that they each seek to convey their images. Landscape and extensive travels are prominent influences and earlier this year Rex and Judith followed the Don Quixote trail in Spain, which has inspired some of the new works for this exhibition. Judith has always expressed herself through colour. Her artwork is about vibrance and passion and she has now created a suite of paintings about Flamenco dancing, which seems a perfect fit. Rex is renowned for his intricately lyrical paintings about the Australian bush, but has naturally found inspiration in many other places and experiences such as travelling in La Mancha. Art on Cairncross is located at 3 Panorama Place. See www.artoncairncross.com.au.

Get ready to rock at the Caloundra Music Festival

With the promise of ‘Sun, Surf and Soul’, this year the Caloundra Music Festival (CMF) is gearing up to ‘rock your socks off’ as the line up moves towards a more rock orientated feel. Big name festival favourites hitting the bill include Xavier Rudd, Baby Animals and Stonefield, as well as Oz rockers Grinspoon, Kingswood, British India and Killing Heidi. With an already jam packed program featuring massive all-ages crowd pleasers Drapht and Thundamentals, a third round of artist announcements will be released soon. CMF festival director Richie Eyles said this year’s impressive line-up to date had a ‘rock’ edge to it, full of great Aussie artists from near and far. “This year, like all others, the level of talent is outstanding,” said Richie. Other acts included in the second artist announcement include blues artist Karl S Williams as well as reggae vibers Bearfoot, Black Bird Hum and Chocolate Strings. Aussie rocking favourites The Black Sorrows and Jon Stevens will also hit the festival, as well as old school party rockers Pseudo Echo. Tickets are on sale now. Black Rock inspiration

An exhibition of works on paper by Beerwah artist Roger Callen is currently on display at the Maroochydore Library Artspace. Roger’s exhibition explores the landscape of Mt Coonowrin and, in particular, the landmark formation known as Black Rock that hides in woodland on Mt Coonowrin’s talus apron. The works on display were completed ‘plein air’ (painted outdoors) and they capture Roger’s affinity with and sustained observation of the area. Discovering his passion for creating visual art somewhat later in life at the age of 68, Roger has extended his work through courses in artist development and a commitment to regular practice. The exhibition has evolved from a year dedicated to painting “the rock” and captures the subtle and often missed details of the surrounding flora and fauna. “I want people to know we are born from the Earth and depend on plants and animals and the rocks and soil that support them, for our existence. I want them to know we are part of natural being and that imagination is our greatest asset,” explains Roger. Currently Roger focuses on watercolour, gouache and collage as a means of expression and, as well as a dedicated study of Black Rock, he has also painted its surrounding volcanic hotspots of Coonowrin and Mount Ngungun. Black Rock Exhibition runs until August 5 at Maroochydore Library.

Bush Food Banter

Lemon Myrtle I just adore the creamy lemon and lime smell of Lemon Myrtle! Backhousia citriodora is one of the most popular and versatile of our native wild foods. Noted for its fresh lemon fragrance, there are many ways to use this gorgeous plant. Dried leaves can be used in baking, whole leaves added to baked fish, infused into oils and vinegars, enjoyed as tea (fantastic for sore throats and colds) or as a lemon flavour to milk-based desserts such as cheesecake, ice-cream and panna cottas. Lemon Myrtle is a great garden plant also. An evergreen hardy shrub to small tree growing about 4m, it’s a good bushy hedge or specimen plant and spectacular when covered in creamy clusters of flowers. To make Lemon Myrtle Panna Cotta, dissolve one sachet of gelation (or Queen Jel-it-in for vegetarians) in 200ml of milk. Add 4 lemon myrtle leaves, vanilla pod, 500ml cream and 2 tb caster sugar. Warm gently, stirring to dissolve sugar and the mixture starts to bubble. Remove from heat, pour into little containers and allow to cool. Chill for three hours. Great with raspberries. For a refreshing Pineapple and Lemon Myrtle drink, pour 2 cups of boiling water over 4 lemon myrtle leaves (gently crushed) and allow to steep and cool. Mix with 2 litres of unsweetened pineapple juice, 1 litre of mineral or soda water. Add ice and mint leaves to serve. From the churches What is a Christian? With the variety of Christian denominations and churches, one may wonder as to what is a Christian exactly. There seems to be no end to the differences among Christian churches and those who make up their congregations. So, let’s get down to just what exactly is the historical common thread that would be agreed upon by all throughout the ages. First, a Christian is a follower and disciple of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, meaning that He is the founder of the Christian faith. There are a few basic points that form the basis of what it means to be a Christian. 1. Christians believe that God has revealed Himself savingly in the Old and New Testaments of the Christian Bible. These are God’s word to the followers of Jesus and believed to be inerrant and infallible in faith and practice. 2. Christians believe that Jesus is the infinite God/man, the Son of God the Father and who was sent to do a specific task in space, time and history.

Christians believe that Jesus offered himself freely to be crucified until dead, was then buried, and later raised to life in the power of the Spirit and was visible to over 500 witnesses. 5. Christians believe that Jesus ascended into heaven to prepare a place for his followers. 6. Christians believe that Jesus is coming again as he promised at the end of this age to complete the salvation of his people and ushering in the Kingdom of God. There’re many other things Christians believe, but these are the basic teachings. Being a follower of Jesus means forsaking all other things, people and power in order to make him our Lord and Saviour. Jesus said, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching.” Beware of anyone or who adds or takes away from the above, or tries to modernise, marginalise or minimise Christianity.

Pets & Livestock Cont.

Firewood Cont.

Pets & Livestock The Queensland Government has introduced new laws to promote the responsible breeding of dogs. These new laws relate to dogs and puppies born after May 26, 2017. After this date, it is illegal to sell, supply, give away or advertise a dog or puppy without providing a ‘supply number’, which is used to identify where the animal has originated from. Advertising for the sale, supply or giving away of a dog or puppy born after May 26, 2017 will not be accepted by Glasshouse Country & Maleny News without a supply number. To find out more go to www.daf.qld.gov.au and search for ‘dog breeder regulation’.

We're still enjoying this beautiful "winter?" weather. What winter?? However it has meant that our fairways are thick and green! Thanks to our outstanding Greens Staff. So no excuses for not playing well. Saturday, July 1 was our Saturday Monthly Medal and there were 25 ladies in one division. The winner was Vanessa Aland on 72 nett. Runner up was Sonia Kenway, 76 nett, and gross winner was Jo Malone on 83. NTPs: (5) Mavis Brimelow, (16) Sue Woolway, (18) Càthy Stone. Putting: Sonia Kenway 27 putts. BRD went to 79 nett. Thursday, July 6 was again Monthly Medal in three grades with 52 players. In A Grade the winner was Stephanie Seakins (visitor from UK)

76 nett ocb, runner up was Cathy Stone 76 nett and the gross winner was Hope Hannah 92 gross. In B Grade the winner was Teresa Keast 73 nett, runner up was Jennifer Kelly 76 and gross winner was Margaret Zonca 97 gross. The C Grade winner was Jan Corfield 72 nett, runner up was Barbara McIntosh 75 nett and gross winner was Pauline Mason. Putting: Brenda Briese 27 putts. NTPs: (2) Carolyn Chestnut, (5) Sue Williamson, (16) Ruth Parish, (18) Barbara Drury. BRD went to 80 nett. I'll be away for the next couple of weeks but I'm sure someone will fill this role. Look forward to more days enjoying the company, if not always the golf.

Contributed by Neil Lovett We have had, all in all, a very good week. After a rather lean run in both pennant competitions we had a good win in the competition for Division 1 and Division 2 players, the Lochwood Shield. We hosted Caloundra, represented by two fine players in Sue and Mike Bertram. The scores were (Range players named first) Donna Manning 22 Sue 20, Ken Barker 26 Mike 10 and in the doubles Vince Carbery and Nick Cram 18 Sue and Mike 12. The match score was Range 3 Caloundra 0. In fairness to our visitors we should point out that these are handicap games. A smaller group than usual visited us from the Blackall Range Care Group, but they enjoyed the morning tea, and two groups managed to reach the lawns for a hit. In club games, on Sunday Ken beat Kath Smith 26-2 and on Thursday our welcome annual visitor, Jan Barnes, celebrated her impending return to Launceston with a 15-5 victory over Ken, and Kath made short work of Frances Harper and Vince, winning 16-8. Our lawns are in the Maleny Showgrounds on Stanley River Road, and regular coaching sessions are held on Saturday mornings, with mallets available for beginners. For information about coaching, hiring or joining, ring Vince Carbery on 5494 2193 or Priscilla Vickers on 5494 3555.

Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Graeme Glover While the weather made bowling a little difficult this week we were pleased with the news of our $20,000 grant application being successful. Thanks to Jim King and anyone else who helped in any way with this submission. Much appreciated and thanks for managing this process on behalf of the club. Community facilities such as ours are helped greatly by these types of government grants. This will be used to refurbish the bar area. To say the feeling amongst the club members was ecstatic would be an understatement. The bar boys who are our volunteer bar staff will be looking forward to our new facilities. On the bowls front we had a great Tuesday morning of bowls where our ladies singles champion Jane Burgess teamed up with our just returned from the red centre exploring artistic options Miles Allen to score 2 wins plus a margin of 20. Well done to both Jane and Miles. No one won the jackpot. Thanks to all who played and hope to see you at the club on a Tuesday morning. John and Sandra Kapetanic are running the Tuesday games. Thanks to them for volunteering to do this. Much appreciated by all our bowling members. Wednesday night was a washout. A few dropped by for a social chat and ale – excellent. 40

Reminder that there is bowls this week and later watch the third State of Origin. All welcome. All try to be there by 6pm to help with catering and game organisation. Next competition starts in two weeks. Miles Allen will be running that competition for the club. Efforts in volunteering to do this much appreciated. Get your teams together – we will help folks make up teams also as we have people away travelling so players always welcome. No one misses out at Maleny Bowls. Nominate teams for the following week's trial round start of the next competition. Email Graeme Glover or Miles Allen at chairman@malenybowls. com.au so the draw can be made and teams allocated. Remember all welcome – bowls and burger $13. Come and try – help given to new bowlers. Our very popular scroungers was washed out because of rain. See you all next week. Great to catch up with Doug McBrother at the club when we were having the members draw. The only winner was Ty Newton... Daylilies. Thank you to sponsor Scott Alexander. Thanks again to all our members and local sponsors who contribute in any way to the running of the club.

Tuesday 4/7: Our Club held an 18 hole Individual Stableford Competition for both the men and the ladies. First place went to Mark Green with 41 points on a count-back from our runner-up, Jan Johnston (41) and third place went to Rod Waldron with 38 points. Niel Cronk, Don Lemon, Gary Dallyn and Peter Gilbert were all included in the ball run down. Nearest to the Pins went to Michael Kapper on the third hole and Michael Sprenger on the fifth hole. Wednesday 5/7: The ladies held an 18 Hole Single Stableford Competition with first place going to Margaret Goodger with 40 points on a count-back from the runner-up, Christine Lemon (40) and third place went to Anne Devane with 34 points with Robin Hay also receiving a ball in the run-down. Nearest to the Pins went to Christine Lemon on the 5th and 14 holes. Friday 7/7: Our results from the Friday ChookRun Competition were: first place going to Doug Johnstone, runner-up went to Rod Waldron and third place going to Ralph Ding. Saturday 8/7: There was an 18 Hole Single Stroke Event for our members and visitors. First place went to Tom Kennedy with 64 nett, Runner-up went to Marcus Wellington with 66 nett and Third place went to Bill Reynolds with 69 nett on a count-back from Malcolm Ewing also 69 nett. The picturesque Maleny Golf Club at 15 Porters Lane, North Maleny provides an enjoyable golfing experience and challenge for players of all standards. Visitors are welcome. Super Strawberry Round 1 The 2017 Super Strawberry Competition has started well, with a good weight for the winning entry in Round 1. The winner is Omy Strawberries with a fruit weighing 161 grams. Remember, this year in each weekly round we are looking for the heaviest strawberry and the most unusual strawberry. No contenders for the most unusual at this stage. The annual Super Strawberry competition runs in conjunction with the Beerwah Charity Sports & Spring Carnival, a community fundraiser for Cancer Council Queensland. There are eight weekly rounds, and the 2017 champion will be announced on the Sports Day, Saturday August 26. Round 2 closes 4pm, Friday July 14, at Coochin Creek Co-op. Thanks to the Co-op staff and Beerwah Hotel for supporting this competition. Enquiries to Helen Page, 5494 9557.

Just for Laughs The 6th grade science teacher... The 6th grade science teacher, Mrs Parks, asked her class, "Which human body part increases to ten times its size when stimulated?" No one answered until little Mary stood up and said, "You should not be asking sixth-graders a question like that! I'm going to tell my parents, and they will go and tell the principal, who will then fire you!" Mrs Parks ignored her and asked the question again, "Which body part increases to 10 times its size when stimulated?" Little Mary's mouth fell open. Then she said to those around her, "Boy, is she going to get in big trouble!"

Your Stars ARIES March 21 - April 20 There seems to be some anger around your employment and some angry personal issues may need to be addressed. You will feel this via a powerful Pluto opposition to Mars and Cancer, which directly affects your sign. Last weekend there was a Full Moon which puts you in the middle of emotional difficulties between office and home. TAURUS April 21 - May 22 From this Wednesday you should put a curb on extravagant tendencies. Friends may ask you for firm commitments that you need to check tie in with reality, rather than being ‘pie in the sky’. That may include some family members too. A family secret gives you something to mull over. Think through first what you are going to say. GEMINI May 23 - June 21 Venus has you hopping around town as a friendly Ambassador and so avid listeners are enjoying your short stories, most likely of previous travel journeys. Take good care of some important financial paper work. There is a need for action to increase your earning capabilities. It’s time to take charge and get motivated with positive emotions. CANCER June 22 - July 22 Even though you may find some of your feelings relate to being neglected, it is only for a couple of days, so try to stay confident and stabilise your insecure emotions. Feelings should not rule your head, or you can become bitter and discontented. Find a constructive job to put your hands to work which brings a better perspective.

The teacher continued to ignore her and said to the class, "Anybody?" Finally, Billy stood up, looked around nervously, and said, "The body part that increases 10 times its size when stimulated is the pupil of the eye." Mrs Parks said, "Very good, Billy," then turned to Mary and continued. "As for you, young lady, I have three things to say: One, you have a dirty mind. Two, you didn't read your homework. And three, one day you are going to be very, very disappointed." Contributed by Jordan James, Mooloolah

LEO July 23 - August 22 For the next few weeks there is a channel of innovative, exciting energy coming your way, right through to August! This week might start the theatrical flair of your emotions, however you just have to keep remembering to get down to practical business. With some suspicions don’t let an obsessive mind set create unstable actions. VIRGO August 23 - September 22 This week is a good one to achieve success with strengthening social connections and accepting help from colleagues. There may be some soul searching to tap your emotional reservoir to move any action based on the good of all. Over the weekend, in order to move forward, just forget the past and be forgiving of past disruptions. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 There may be a good reason to go out for breakfast as it is a friendly affair. However, there may be some emotional congestion which makes it hard to understand what others mean! Just don’t let it exhaust you. There is a health matter that needs attention. A positive uplift is coming for the weekend. Everybody needs a little space now. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 As the energies of the planets eventually move into Leo they will tie up your sector of career opportunities. This will be a week urging you to step out from behind the scenes and accept recognition and even extra financial rewards. Weekend fun depends on whom you pick to be your companions. So be selective. Apply brakes if necessary.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 December 22 The Universe is entering your relationship zone in one of her most fun loving flirty playful moods! You are rising to a glowing New Moon in the third week, so maybe this is time to visit loved ones you may not have seen for a while. The weekend sees the meeting of Mercury and Jupiter which means taking advantage of any travel trips. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 You could be your own worst enemy when it comes to allowing your insecurities to hold you back when interacting with others. Just accept yourself as you are and allow others to do the same. The domestic scene is the setting for interesting changes and that makes staying at home more appealing than any weekend trips. Socialise at home. AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 This is not the time to handle responsibilities carelessly, or brood about any low selfesteem. The week is not really the best to invest or lend as you may not be seeing the details clearly. There is an afternoon delight that will find you and an interaction that could sparkle bright in different ways with upbeat, cheerful positive people now. PISCES February 20 - March 20 This week there is a need to be discerning in order to distinguish which is true and what is false. Some people are prone to tell tall tales or some magazine may be publishing false news. Your job is to read between the lines to see if they are exaggerating the truth or are just outright deceptive. Don’t worry about a few delays.
