Hi Everyone Recently you would have received a copy of your new ‘Local Shopper Discount Voucher book’; it has a bright green cover and would have been very hard to miss! We have produced the voucher book as a way of encouraging locals to shop locally – and one Landsborough local who was pleased she did just that is Elizabeth Smith. She was so surprised when she got the call from GCNews to say she was the winner of the $250.00 voucher from a business featured in the first edition of the voucher book. When asked to choose where she would like the voucher from, Elizabeth said she needed to have some work done on her bathroom, so she very sensibly went with Mitre 10 at Glass House Mountains. The voucher Elizabeth had used to enter the draw, was for a free

child’s meal at the Beerwah Hotel, where her family had gone to celebrate her grand-daughter’s birthday. Congratulations Elizabeth, and I look forward to seeing who takes out the prize at the end of this voucher book. There are some really great discount offers in this next Discount Book – just perfect for the lead up to Christmas so don’t leave it sitting on the bench – cut out the vouchers and use them. Best of all, you’ll save some dollars! Regards,

Beerwah High art teacher Karen Massingham likes to teach by example, and if her latest example is anything to go by, we had all be ready for some inspirational artwork from the students at Beerwah State High. Karen’s mixed media artwork, ‘Denunciation’, was last week named the winner of the People’s Choice Award at the Squeeze 2011 exhibition at the Caloundra Regional Art Gallery. Karen, who said the artwork was inspired by her years of teaching and her female students, said she appropriated a section from Rossetti’s The Annunciation 1850. She put the image of Mary on a plain brown paper background, to signify that beauty does not have to be expensive, and that it is what’s inside, not the wrapping, that is the true treasure. The right panel is a mirror reflection of the drawing to the left. It is outlined in red and black inked words that show the girl’s internal, negative dialogue that continually loops through her subconscious. (See cover photofor full picture). “How many of our young women seem to have a beautiful and peaceful exterior, all the while inside, they are troubled with destructive self-talk and doubt?” said Karen. “The Denunciation of their talents and gifts, limits their potential for success and life happiness, by the substitution of other’s opinions and judgments for their own.” Karen said it was a lovely surprise to receive recognition for her work.

Sportsground master plan paves way for exciting future

It’s been more than seven years in the making, and seen a number of significant changes, but at last, the centerpiece of the region’s sporting and recreation future has been signed off. Last week, Council adopted the Beerwah Sports Ground Master Plan, including the Beerwah Aquatic Centre Feasibility Plan, a document which lays the foundation for the anticipated development of the facility in line with projected future demand. Wellbeing Planning Officer, David Cooper said the Beerwah Sports Ground Master Plan provides a clear way forward for the development of the grounds and expansion of the aquatic centre. He said the master plan builds on existing infrastructure to reflect best value for money, while retaining flexibility for changes in future use and/or multi-use options. The 2011/12 capital works program includes $300,000 for staged construction of master plan initiatives, with the plan providing the capacity to allow council to lobby state and federal governments for funding assistance to see the vision for the facility come to fruition. Divisional councillor Anna Grosskreutz said she was relieved to have achieved the best outcome in terms of planning for the Beerwah sportsground and aquatic facility, and it was now up to those who follow to keep a close eye on the project to ensure funding. “I’ve done the hard part to get all the planning in place and it should as a matter of course follow on with funding, so I wouldn’t want to see it all go by the wayside,” Cr Grosskreutz said. Key features of the plan include ensuring existing and future demand for quality sport and recreation facilities in Beerwah are catered for, significant expansion of aquatic facilities, the efficient and effective use of space to cater for the demands of user groups, both now and in the future, the enhancement of the visual amenity of the facility and better parking.

With a ‘quick treatment’ for painful toenails OR make it PERMANENT with nail surgery!

$

Podiatrists are trained specifically in the management of lower limb, foot and nail conditions. A simple permanent nail surgery procedure involves the removal of a small portion of the nail edge and cauterisation of the nail bed (layer of cells under the actual nail). This cauterisation prevents the ingrowing nail from coming back. The ‘quick treatment’ involves the removal of just the nail (not the nail bed), thus allowing the nail to grow straight again.

Council last week refused an application for a 24 hour McDonald’s near the intersection of Caloundra Street and Steve Irwin Way at Landsborough. Council endorsed the recommendations of the Strategy and Planning committee report, which refused the application due to a number of conflicts with the planning scheme, including the protection of industrial land stock, and the preservation of the character and identity of the gateway to the hinterland areas and scenic routes of Landsborough, Steve Irwin Way and the Blackall Range tourist drive. Divisional councillor Anna Grosskreutz said the applicant had been made aware at the very first meeting that the proposed site was not suitable. “The outcome is the right one, and I was confident that would happen,” Cr Grosskreutz said. Cr Grosskreutz said she had previously identified Beerwah as a more suitable location for the proposed restaurant, as a region’s major centre, where there was more suitable land. A spokesperson for McDonald’s said they were disappointed with the decision, and have yet to decide whether or not they will appeal the decision. The spokesperson said the objections raised by some members of Council could easily be overcome by placing conditions on the proposed development. “McDonald’s regularly adapts the design and branding of our restaurants to ensure they complement the character of the communities in which they are located,” the spokesperson said.

Surprise donations lift spirits A last minute donation of much needed funds late last week has improved the outlook for Graeme Arden and his family, who underwent life saving surgery last Monday. Following five weeks of fundraising and hundreds of supporting Sunshine Coast donations, Graeme Ardern’s family received two surprise donations, one for $4,000 from local business Range Kids Care Group, and a further $1,000 from an anonymous donor, bringing the total money raised to $26,500. Graeme and his family were presented with the surprise donations in Beerwah on Friday. The 36-year-old father from Beerwah was diagnosed with a rare tumour in his neck and was told without urgent surgery, at a cost of $30,000, his chance of survival was low. Dr Ralph Mobbs of Sydney, the only neurosurgeon capable of performing the surgery, said time

restraints meant an application to Queensland Health to pay for the procedure would delay the operation by at least 12 months - time Graeme didn’t have. Graeme’s family launched multiple fund raising events Graeme Arden including car wash, movie night, mountain bike charity ride, garage sale, sausage sizzle and strawberry picking day. Graeme, Mandy and their five-year-old son Dean flew to Sydney on Saturday for the life saving surgery at the Prince of Wales Private Hospital in Randwick. Its expected the family will return to the Coast later this month. GCNews will endeavour to keep readers up to date with Graeme’s progress as news comes to hand.

Tibrogargan climbers caught in violent storm By Dave Erbacher Last Saturday three Brisbane 17 year olds set off early to climb Mt Tibrogargan after previously postponing their outing. They successfully climbed to the top and were about one third of the way down when the violent storm which had been predicted hit the area. Fortunately, common sense prevailed and they recognised the dangerous slippery and windy conditions and called for help at 7.45am. A Glasshouse SES Crew attended and climbed to the waiting climbers who were very cold. The two males were able to climb down with assistance and a series of ropes were set up to lower the female to the start of the serious climb. The rescue was carried out in quite windy, cold and rainy conditions. The

www.gcnews.com.au

rescuees and the SES crew arrived back at the car par safe and sound at 11.15am much to the delight of the climber’s families who had travelled from Brisbane. Group Leader, Robert Barry said that whilst most people were aware of the impending conditions, obviously the young climbers were not as they set off in cool cloudy conditions. Their decision to call for help early was a credit to them as they were on the verge of suffering serious hyperthermia when the crew reached them. They were checked out by waiting ambulance officers and they and their families thanked everyone concerned in the successful outcome. Robert thanked the crew of: Ross, Tim, Lou, Cameron, Jason, Dave, Brett, Tarra and Lauren.

Last week, crowds gathered to celebrate the launch of the eighth edition of the annual Rotary Calendar, a stunning showcase of our region’s majestic beauty. The calendar features the winning entries of Rotary’s annual photo competition, the theme of which for this year was fauna and the Glass House Mountains. As most of you know, the photos chosen are the winners of the calendar competition held every year by Rotary for insertion into the calendar and always feature our Glasshouse Mountains. The proceeds from the sale of the calendars go towards community projects. For the sixth year in a row, the price of the calendar has been kept to the low price of only $7.50, making it an ideal Christmas gift for friends and relatives, local, interstate or overseas. The calendar is available from a number of local outlets including selected IGA supermarkets, post offices and newsagents, Matilda Fuel Supplies in Glass House, Beerwah Camping Centre, Beerwah Pub, Serendipity, Community Recycling (Saturday mornings), and Beerwah Photographics. Tech Time IT review

Web Review

with Tara

What’s wrong with my internet?

We often get customers asking us 'My internet has stopped working – what’s wrong?' or 'My internet has suddenly become really slow – what’s wrong?'. There can be a few simple things to try before you call your friendly, local IT guy! Power cycle your modem/router. This is the ‘box that has lights on it that gives you the internet’. Your starting point should always be to turn it completely off, wait a few minutes, then turn it on again. In many cases this will fix the problem. If power cycling your modem does not fix the problem, there is more you can try. Have you recently had any changes to your phone lines at home? We had a customer who had a new phone point put in her home. After she moved her modem to the new phone point – the internet suddenly went very slow. After moving the modem back to its original phone point – it was fine again. In her older style home, there were problems with the wiring. Have you plugged in a new phone? Have you had a power surge? Any faulty device plugged in to a phone line in your home can cause your internet speed to drop suddenly or stop working completely. Start by unplugging anything that goes into a phone line (all phones/faxes etc). If you have a splitter on your modem (which you should!) – remove this also. Then plug the phone line from your wall directly into your modem (no splitter for now). Test your internet – has this fixed the problem? Then re-add your devices one by one – testing the internet in between each one. If you are still experiencing issues with your internet, the problem may lie with your modem or splitter. A replacement can cost around $75.00 for a wireless modem-router or $15.00 for a splitter. If you replace you modem and still have trouble – it could be an issue with your line. Contact your ISP and ask them to organise a line test for you. Or just call your friendly local IT guy and get them to assist!

Our World I don’t know why, perhaps it’s the spring air, but today something has me thinking about the world in which we live and the fact that the web is not just a business / socialising tool, but a vast wealth of knowledge about our planet and the universe. Fast internet speeds have allowed modern websites to make greater use of rich multimedia, in turn making them more accessible and more enjoyable for the average web surfer. Viewing the World A fine example of the modern use of rich multimedia is the interactive trailer for the new BBC feature film 'One Life'. For some amazing footage from the film and behind the scenes, check out www.one-life.com Saving the World Another way that websites are making world issues accessible to the average user is through the use of basic online gaming, or what some techos are calling the 'gamification' of issues and concepts. A great example is www.the-planet-zero.com which allows you to run and jump your little character around the world, learning about alternative energy, greenhouse emissions and the like. Crunching the Numbers The Australian census board went above and beyond in their recent promotion of the 2011 census, and its importance in planning the Australia of the future. You might be surprised to learn some of the facts and figures they have to offer. Check it out online at spotlight.abs.gov.au

AGM The chamber recently held our AGM at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club. After being in the role of president for a number of years, Kel McNamara of KLM Energy decided not to run again for the position. As Vice president I decided I would like the opportunity to step up. In the past few years Kel has seen the Glass House Mountains and Beerburrum Business and Tourism Association make the transition into the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce. He has also done a great job in representing our business community at Sunshine Coast wide functions and worked hard with the committee to form strong working relationships with all levels of government and supported the efforts of the executive committee to grow our membership. Congratulations Kel on all that you have achieved and thank you from all of our members for your hard work. The role of vice president has now been taken on by Jeff Ross of the Beerburrum Service Centre; Ursula Starkovsky from First National Real Estate will continue on in the role of treasurer and James Ashby, Gowinta Farms will be the new members’ officer. Ben Foster of Staticwave Web and Digital Marketing will be the Webmaster and in the coming weeks we will have a new secretary join the group.

Local networking evening Our next meeting will be a networking evening to be held on Wednesday, October 19 Gowinta Farms, Burys Road, Beerwah from 5.30pm – 7.00pm. I think that this sharing and learning is a valuable function that the Chamber of Commerce can offer its members, particularly in these tough economic times; sharing ideas can be a valuable form of support. There will be no charge for those that would like to attend the evening however we will need numbers for catering. Contact Sarah at Glasshouse Country News on 5438 7445 or email her at reception@gcnews.com.au to advise of your attendance. Looking forward to catching up with you all on the night.

Fashionable Vintage at Great Prices

Since opening Vicious Vintage at Mooloolah 18 months ago, Judi Pearce has been having a ball. “I just enjoy the gorgeous people coming in, the fact I’m doing something for the community and loving what I’m doing,” she said. Vicious Vintage provides a large range of new and pre-loved clothing, furniture, décor and accessories. “We thought the community needed this shop and we’ve been proven right. People are coming in and are happy they don’t have to go anywhere outside of Mooloolah. Lots of customers are in the shop browsing for hours. It’s a friendly, happy place,” she said. But it’s not just locals enjoying the benefits of fashionable clothing at very cheap prices. “I’ve got customers coming from Noosa to check out the vintage items,” Judi said, “They love coming here because it’s something different. Vintage is fashionable and you can get something unique.” Judi not only has a lifetime of retail experience, she also has a big heart. When a lady dropped into her store three months ago and told her about the Galiwinku aboriginal community at Elcho Islands in the Northern Territory Judy knew she had to help. “They don’t have anything up there so I gave her a whole lot of men’s and children wear for them. Now I give anything I’m not selling and also take donations from the community to send there; things like children’s clothes, toys, sheets, just about anything, but not crockery.” If you would like to donate to the Galiwinku Community or just want to see what goods are available to purchase visit the store at 1/1 Mooloolah-Connection Road (near the Post Office). Opening hours are Monday to Friday 9.00am to 5.00pm and Saturday 8.30am to 12.30pm. Phone 5492 9076. www.gcnews.com.au

If you were not in the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club on Sunday, October 2, you missed out on a great day when Caboolture Toastmasters hosted the Area 3 Speech Contest for the six clubs in that area. A total of more than 60 people from the two Bribie Island clubs, Caboolture, Kilcoy, Glasshouse and the Advanced Toastmaster Club came together to compete. There were four competitions, Table Topics, Evaluation, Humorous Speech and International Speech. Glasshouse Country won the International Speech Contest and we’d like to congratulate Robert Thompson with his terrific result, coming third in the Humorous Speech competition. Martine Goedhart represented Glasshouse in the Table Topic Contest in which she came third. Ally Lovett did an excellent evaluation in the Evaluation Contest, but just missed out on a placing. If you would like to know more about Toastmasters, be our guest on the second and fourth Thursday of each month in the hall of Church on the Rise, Peachester Road in Beerwah. Give us a call for more information on 5496 9855 for Martine or 5494 0161 to speak to Kerry.

Beerwah Neighbourhood Watch Contributed by Sheila Williams, secretary

At the meeting of Beerwah NHWQ held on October 3, a ‘Good Neighbour Award’ was presented to Marion and Terry Dale, who had been nominated by Sylvia Shaw. Syliva said “good neighbours are a blessing, so we are so lucky to have Marion and Terry. Need a helping hand? Call them. They help with plants (Terry), cooking (both). When I had pneumonia, I am convinced Marion’s pumpkin soup saved my life! On my behalf and my Yeates Road neighbours, thank you both.” Terry is also with WILVOS, and rehabilitates injured birds before their release into the wild. We also had a lively and entertaining talk from Dan Kopittke, representing the Heart Foundation. At the meeting it was decided that, from the beginning of next year, the ‘Good Neighbour Award’ would be extended to cover both Landsborough and Glass House, as neither area now has a Neighbourhood Watch. It will now be known as ‘The Glasshouse Country Good Neighbour Award’. Nomination forms may be found in the October newsletter of Beerwah NHWQ, at the Glasshouse Country News office, and at Landsborough museum; or just e-mail swilli17@dodo.com.au

Community Group Updates Beerwah Writers Group

Landsborough Museum

Contributed by John Wright

Contributed by Wendy Dixon, Museum Curator

At our recent meeting we welcomed new member Julie Pickering and went on to discuss a wider range of genres for our next book of collected works. It was also agreed to consider additional illustrations. In our ‘work-reading session’ the topics presented varied from humorous to tragic. Margie dwelt on ‘Happiness’; Anneke told ‘Candlesticks and an engagement’; Kate’s subject was ‘My Pet’; Wil expounded on the ‘Soulfulness of Man’; Joan described ‘A Small World’; Barbara gave us ‘A Song on the Beach’; Shirley took a trip to and through ‘Bill’s Garden’; Steve related a cameo of science fiction and tragedy; Bob related some of the notable events in Beerwah’s history, from a ‘Pawn and Prawn’ night, a Casino night, some kindergarten ladies and some police raids; Eric provided a song ‘I Searched Everywhere’; Patricia told of a girl’s swing at the Dawson River; Julie recounted her ‘Travels with a Book’; and Trevor convinced us of ‘The Healing Power of Conviction’. Providing opportunities for writers to present their work and receive feedback, meetings take place at Beerwah Library on the second and fourth Friday of each month. Next meeting is on Friday, October 14. Whether you are a writer, or just interested in writing, you will find a friendly welcome in this group whose members range from beginners to accomplished, published authors. Refreshments provided for a small donation. Guests and visitors welcomed. Membership fee is $5.00 per year. For further information phone John 5493 0624.

Have you been to Landsborough Museum lately? If so, you will have seen our latest temporary exhibition, ‘A Snapshot of the Life of Helen Edith Woodley’. Helen came to Glass House Mountains in 1936 with husband Hedley to grow pineapples. She was a prolific handcrafter, sewing, crocheting and winning awards. Along with Hedley she built strong ties with the Uniting Church while they farmed near Pike’s Road. She was still stitching a few short weeks before her passing at 90 years of age. The Council Helen and Hedley’s renamed Woodley’s wedding photo at Road in favour of Wynnum, 1932 a Councillor. GCNews welcomes contributions from all local community groups and service clubs. Please note the editorial deadline is 12.00noon each Friday. If you have missed the deadline your article will not be considered for the next edition. For articles that do meet the deadline every effort will be made to include them in the next edition. However if we receive more contributions than we have space available your contribution may be held over until the following week. Priority is given to articles / notices that are time specific.

Helen at Glass House Mountains

If you would like to volunteer at the museum we are looking for short term volunteers as proof readers, data entry people who can use Access and Excel and a cleaner for high or out of the way places. We also need regular committed volunteers for meet and greet duties. If you would like to know more, come in on Sundays between 1.00pm - 2.00pm or leave a daytime phone number or email address and we will get back to you as soon as possible. Everyone at Landsborough Museum is a volunteer and Landsborough Museum is cared for by the Landsborough and District Historical Society Inc. The philosophy of GCNews is to ensure community groups and other regular contributors have equal opportunity in accessing the free community space made available each week. Please keep contributions to a maximum of 250 words, or 200 words and a photo. Submissions may be edited if too lengthy and in accordance with the GCNews style guide. You Said It

Road Racers

In response to last fortnights ‘Coonowrin Road Race Track’ in letters to the editor, we cannot agree more with Kaz and Rich. This stretch of road is out of control at times. We live on the top end of Poole Road so we get the vehicles sliding sideways off Coonowrin Road or changing up or down three or four gears to reach racing speed. One regular night time user would top over 140km/hr from the school past the pineapples on Coonowrin Road. What we need is a covert police presence on and off to catch the offenders, even the wheelie bin speed camera setup. But I’m sure most residents along the ‘race strip’ roads would gladly allow cameras setup in or around their property to stop this chaos. Let’s catch those who have total disregard for the rest of us trying to live in relative peace. Erin and Brad Glass House Mountains

A positive step forward The Sunshine Coast FarmFLOW project will be delivering support, incentives and training to landholders in the upper Mooloolah, North Maroochy and Kin Kin catchments and the Maroochy canelands.

What is available?

Rural landholders in the three target catchments may be eligible to access advice and incentive funding to assist them on-farm with: • Rehabilitation and re-vegetation of waterways and wetlands • Rehabilitation of landslips and erosion sites, and/or • Farming best management practices such as fencing and nutrient application. Applications close October 14, 2011 To become involved or for further information please contact the Project Coordinator Ian McConnel on 0407 168 995 or at ian.mcconnel@deedi.qld.gov.au The Sunshine Coast FarmFLOW project is a collaboration between Maroochy Landcare, Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation (DEEDI), Sunshine Coast Council and SEQ Catchments funded by the Australian Government Caring for our Country program.

It was very interesting to read in The Courier Mail on Friday, September 30, where it was suggested that anyone involved in clubs read the outcome of the Supreme Court action Gresham vs. Beerwah RSL and Citizens Memorial Club Inc. (http://www.sclqld.org.au/qjudgment/2011/QSC/288). I have watched for the last 12 months as this saga has unfolded and heard many rumours. I’ve also read many letters to the editor from this Mr Gresham who seemed to be so against the community club, so I decided to download this judgement and try to get a grasp of why the Beerwah Peachester RSL Sub-Branch evicted such a great community club from the building in Beerwah and understand their reasoning. It has been ruled by a supreme court judge that everything the management committee of the community club had done by not allowing the sub branch to install a majority of members onto the club board without being elected by the clubs members was absolutely legal and correct. In the judges words the actions by the Beerwah Peachester RSL Sub-Branch were optimistic in the extreme. So to the members who were on this Committee of the evicted Club (now at Glass House Mountains and operating from the Glasshouse Bowls Club) congratulations on not giving into the bully tactics of this RSL Sub Branch and for your victory in this uncalled-for action that was taken out against you. Curiosity got the better of me last week so I visited the Club at Glass House Mountains which has been renamed Club Glasshouse. I was pleasantly surprised that with everything they have had to endure in the last eight months, how they have managed to move forward and create an even better atmosphere. The meals from the kitchen are excellent and the dining room looking out over the green is a far cry from the RSL. Talking to a few of the regulars, the place is going ahead in leaps and bounds and they have told me a lot of renovations have been done in the past few months. Judging from the amount of people who were in the club at the time of my visit, I have no doubt that this community club will continue to thrive. Well done and good luck, my family will certainly be back regularly to support you. Danita Black Beerwah

OCTOBER 12 2011

Our family took the opportunity recently to attend the Open Day at the Sandy Creek Organic Farm near Beerwah and had a wonderful day out. Farmer Les Nichols gave us a guided tour and we returned for a delicious lunch in great company with some fabulous music. We got all of our fresh grocery shopping done at the Farmgate stall and enjoyed the juicy strawberries and tasty veggies for days after. It was inspiring and impressive to see an organic farm of this scale in our region and we are grateful to farmers like the Nichols family who give consumers a realistic choice of good and affordable food. In these trying times when our retail markets are increasingly dominated by large supermarket chains and dubious risky imports from afar, it is a relief to have local choices that are easily accessible to the public via Sandy Creeks' veggie box delivery system and Farmgate sales. Local puts down glass to support worthy cause It’s a well known fact that Beerwah’s Jenny Carr loves a glass of wine, but for this month, she has willingly agreed to give up alcohol to support a very good cause. Jenny has signed up to support this year’s Ocsober campaign, which encourages participants to give up alcohol throughout the month to raise awareness of the issues relating to alcohol abuse and raise funds for health education for children. The campaign, now in its fourth year, raises funds for Life Education’s drug and health education programs that support and strengthen primary and secondary schools drug and health initiatives. The money raised will go directly to Life Education to teach more children the skills and the knowledge to say ‘no’ to drugs and alcohol. Jenny said while the hardest thing will be forgoing a glass of wine with dinner, she hopes to raise $1,000.00 to help educate more children about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. “I’m dedicating my efforts to my great-nephew, Fraser and his parents, who have suffered so much from one mistaken choice.” Jenny said Fraser was a promising and gifted artist who, at the age of 20, had an adverse reaction to a well known recreational drug that changed his life forever. “Fraser is now completely dependent on those

The Ocsober Team expects around 3,000 people around Australia will this year go without alcohol to raise money for this worthy cause. Shaws Road Pathway

Cancer - sharing information lunchtime gathering

Council this week will be commencing works to construct a 1.8 metre wide concrete pathway along Shaws Road Beerwah, between Otto Nothling Place and Toriana Place. This will continue the link along Shaws Road, from Old Gympie Road. This $35,000 project will take approximately two weeks to complete, weather permitting.

Fisher Road Bridge

The old timber bridge at Fisher Road, Crohamhurst has recently been replaced with a prefabricated composite (Concrete and timber) ‘Doolan Deck’. Construction of a Doolan Deck bridge, rather than a culvert, provided a much better environmental outcome at little additional cost. The site is considered to be environmentally important as it is at the headwaters of the Stanley River and provides important habitat. The cost of this project was approximately $160,000.

Beerwah Sports Ground Master Plan

The Beerwah Sports Ground Master Plan, including the Beerwah Aquatic Centre Feasibility Plan was adopted by Sunshine Coast Council at this week’s Ordinary Meeting. The Beerwah Sports Ground Master Plan provides a clear way forward for the development of the grounds and expansion of the aquatic centre, and builds on existing infrastructure to reflect best value for money, while retaining flexibility for changes in future use and/or multi-use options. The cost of implementing recommendations cannot be funded in its own right by council, and the adoption of the plan now provides council and stakeholders with a sound base to lobby the state and federal governments for funding assistance for major infrastructure work. Beerwah sports facilities are experiencing increasing demand that will continue to escalate into the future due to population growth, expansion pressures and the need to support active and healthy lifestyles within our community. Cr Anna is available for meetings, by appointment only, at her Beerwah office located in the BADYAC building, in the Beerwah Sportsground Complex on Roberts Road. Please call 5420 8987 to book a time.

If you have had cancer, just been diagnosed, are currently receiving treatment, caring for someone with cancer or a family member or friend and would like to be part of a group to meet informally to share information and work together to provide support, fellowship and help to others in this position, we would love you to join us for a light luncheon to discuss the need for such a group for the Hinterland Community. Friday October 14, 12.30pm – 2.30pm at the CWA Hall, 1 Bicentennial Lane, Maleny. Contact Dot Bellingham 0418 727 789 (dbkpsr@bigpond.net.au) or myself on 5441 8372.

SEQWater News

SEQWater is planning to harvest approximately 12 hectares of exotic pine trees on their land in the coming weeks. The harvest operation will involve forestry machinery felling and stacking the trees within the harvest sites. This also means log trucks will be ferrying logs to Steve Irwin Way via Gympie Street North and Tytherleigh Street. This work will occur during normal business hours and is expected to last for approximately two to three weeks. The nature of the operation will also require the closure of their reserve to the general public during hours of operation, and the track between Gympie Street North and Kowald Road will be closed for the duration of these works. PLANNING THE KEY TO MANAGING THE MORTGAGE WITH A NEW FAMILY Many couples juggle mortgage repayments with bringing up a baby on a single income, but a little planning goes a long way in helping new parents ease the financial burden. This includes considering how to utilise paid maternity leave, annual and long service leave, and one-off payments – such as the baby bonus – to minimise any stress associated with managing finances once the baby arrives. Ideally, the time to start planning is when you decide to become, or find out that you are going to be, a parent. While there are a number of www.gcnews.com.au

options on offer by lending institutions, it is important to seek advice to find solutions for your unique circumstances. Not all of the options on offer by lenders will work for you – and they do vary considerably from bank to bank. A prime example is payment honeymoons – or holidays – which are available to some borrowers, depending on the loan type. For those who do have the option, generally speaking, access is dependent upon the amount of prepaid funds you have accrued. For example, if you’ve been paying extra into your loan for a while and accrued $20,000

in your redraw facility, it is these accrued funds that will fund your payment holiday. Once these funds have been exhausted, the payment honeymoon is over. Switching to interest-only repayments could be another option. While some borrowers may be able to switch to interest-only repayments, it’s important to remember that the loan is still expected to be paid out in (usually) 30 years. So if you are not paying any principal for a while, this will have an impact on your minimum repayments when you revert back to principal and interest. This will

be an important factor in your decision to use this tool. Another essential consideration is whether to fix or not. Factors that will effect your decision include the length of time you’ll be on one income, the income amount, and whether or not you have ongoing additional expenses, such as a car loan or medical costs. Taking time to weigh up the Call Adviser Teresa Harrison. pros and cons, making the T: 5422 9458 or 0410 648 098 best use of one-off payments www.smartline.com.au/tharrison and considering your unique Smartline CL No. 385325 circumstances are all important in developing a plan that will ease the financial burden and, in turn, help you to enjoy your time with your new baby. Council has discontinued its Supreme Court action against the Caloundra South Urban Development Area (UDA) declaration. Minister for Local Government Paul Lucas said he had been approached by Mayor Bob Abbot to end the court proceedings in the interests of the region. “Cr Abbot has advised his council wants to discontinue the judicial review now the Urban Land Development Authority has approved a major project in the UDA,” Mr Lucas said. The decision has been welcomed by the State Government as the project will support local jobs and housing affordability. The 2310 hectare site could cater for up to 50,000 residents and 20,000 new homes as it is developed in the coming 30 years and is expected to support more than 15,000 jobs. “The ULDA approved an application by Stockland for the former Bellvista 2 site, now known as Bells Reach, in early September and Stockland has already commenced works. “Given the substantial investment Stockland is making they sought certainty from SCRC that Bells Reach would not be impacted by the judicial review.” Mayor Abbot said there had been a significant change in the circumstances surrounding the Supreme Court judicial review process since it was first initiated by council. “Council could not legally agree to Stockland’s request without withdrawing entirely from the judicial review process,” Cr Abbot said. “After considerable deliberation council decided that, given that approvals had already been issued and work was now underway on site, it was sensible and in the public interest to discontinue the judicial review proceedings for the Caloundra South development. “Council will continue to work with the ULDA and Stockland to ensure best possible planning outcomes and long-term community benefits would be achieved through the development of Caloundra South.”

with James Ashby Marketing and PR Manager, Gowinta Farms It’s that time of year again where the weather warms up and the country’s largest strawberry region pulls up stumps. Most strawberry farms on the Sunshine Coast have ended their season in recent weeks, with a small few continuing for another week or two. For most growers, the 2011 strawberry season was the best we’ve seen in a long time, with minimal rain and lots of sunshine. If only every year was like the one we’ve just had. It’s a time for growers to say goodbye to their loyal grey nomads and backpackers who commit to the seasonal work of picking and packing, year after year and follow the fruit picking trail of cherries in NSW through to Tasmania. So what’s ahead for our fruit picking region you might ask? It’s likely growers will make early preparations for the 2012 strawberry season given the prediction of another wet summer. There’s nothing worse than consistent wet days that prevent you from prepping and planting. Lychee growers have an abundance of flowers on their trees right now, which means they’re in for a strong picking season in January and February. Local pineapple growers have another couple of months of strong production for both Golden Circle and the fresh food market before a slow down over Christmas. Be sure to buy local smooth cayenne and hybrid pines with their distinctive golden yellow skin. Summer pineapples just can’t be beaten! Raspberries are in large numbers across farms from Palmwoods, Beerwah and Wamuran and are expected to last another six to eight weeks. The increase in growers will mean more of a presence on supermarket shelves this year. And look out for mangoes both on supermarket shelves and from the side of the road over coming weeks. Mango numbers are on the rise from last year, so the lead up to Christmas will be strong. Current mangoes are coming from far North Queensland and the Northern Territory. Enjoy the changing seasonal fruits and always buy 100 per cent Australian and local products to support Aussie jobs and farmers.

Action taken to protect vegetation The Sunshine Coast Council yesterday acted to ensure that local laws will continue to be in place to protect vegetation on the Sunshine Coast. This follows State Government advice that local law coverage is the best method to protect vegetation while the government decides how planning schemes can be better designed to also give protection against illegal clearing. Under State Government legislation all local government local laws were to end on 31 December 2011. Environment Portfolio Councillor Keryn Jones said that by acting yesterday council will ensure that local law protection against any possible illegal clearing continues into 2012. “It's likely that long term protection will come from a combination of local laws and planning schemes across the State,” Cr Jones said. “There will no doubt be consultation with the community during next year on these long term measures. “It's great that in working with the State representatives we have been able to ensure the ongoing protection of one of the region's most important assets. “It's a good outcome and gives everyone the certainty needed.” For information about vegetation protection visit council’s website. Sunshine Coast Rivers Initiative wins the World’s Most Prestigious Environmental Award

Mooloolah River Waterwatch & Landcare along with Sunshine Coast Council and over 30 other community groups on the coast took out the Australian National Riverprize at the 14th International River Symposium, with prize money worth $195,000. The ‘Sunshine Coast Rivers Initiative’ is a group of community groups and government agencies, coordinated by Sunshine Coast Council, totally dedicated to protecting and improving the waterways of the Sunshine Coast. The initiative showcases an impressive collection of achievements involving improvements to creek-side vegetation, in-stream habitat, and land management practices as well as a range of waterway health planning and research projects. The initiative covers six catchment areas and approximately 5000kms of waterways across the Sunshine Coast region. The Sunshine Coast Council initiated the program, submitted the application, rounded us all up for meetings and gave the Sunshine Coast Rivers Initiative ongoing support. The prize money will be used to fund innovative waterway management and improvement projects across the Sunshine Coast. Congratulations to all the community groups, industry, natural resource managers, and government partners involved in natural resource management across the Sunshine Coast. An extra big thanks goes to the Sunshine Coast Council for not only supporting the groups, but also for promoting the vision for the Sunshine Coast to become Australia’s most sustainable region: vibrant, green, diverse.

Plant of the Month

Emu Foot (Cullen tenax) This is a lovely spreading groundcover with pretty purple flowers and divided leaves that resemble – you guessed it – an emu foot. It prefers full sun, can tolerate most soils and each plant can cover an area of 1sqm. It is the host plant for the Chequered Swallowtail Butterfly caterpillar. The young caterpillars look like bird droppings; they then change colour to a rusty brown and then green. This plant is a wonderful addition to your garden, providing ground cover to keep out the weeds with the added benefit of attracting an amazing butterfly. This plant is available for $1.50 in native tubes for 2620 Steve Irwin Way, Glenview QLD this month. Get a head start on your New Year’s Resolutions With just 12 weeks to go until the New Year, Australians can be part of a unique national challenge and become a ‘Swapper’ – as part of the Swap It, Don’t Stop It campaign. A free online 12 week interactive planner to help Australians make changes towards a healthier lifestyle has been developed by the Australian National Preventive Health Agency. You can now join the challenge by going online or even using your iPhone. “Twelve weeks will give you time to start making easy, healthier lifestyle choices that will help you get in good shape to start the 2012 New Year,”

Minister Roxon said. “By making the interactive planner available online, people have the tools and tips to make healthy choices – literally at their fingertips. The unique online planner and iPhone app enable people to take the ‘Swap It’ message, personalise it and then put it into action.” Two well-known Australians who have already signed up to the challenge are Yumi Stynes from Network Ten’s ‘The Circle’ and Olympian Nicole Livingstone. “Every New Year I make a resolution to become healthier, and treat myself and the planet better. Over the next 12 weeks, I’ll be making simple everyday changes towards a healthier lifestyle, without losing all the things I love,” Ms Stynes said. Nicole Livingstone said: “I really support the approach of this campaign. It’s positive, and it shows people that by making small changes it adds up. I’ll be swapping ‘driving for walking’ when picking up the kids from school and looking for other simple ways to get active.” The online 12 week interactive planner features tools to help you plan your food and activity swaps, including alerts, checklists and a progress report. The activity planner uses GPS technology to identify local facilities such as swimming pools, parks and sporting fields, and includes a shopping list that can be sent directly to your iPhone. To begin your 12 week challenge, log on to the online 12 week interactive planner at www. australia.gov.au/swapit. The Swap It iPhone app can be downloaded from the iPhone App Store. www.gcnews.com.au

A team of five will now progress to the District Final on October 15 of to be held at Gympie Golf Course. They will be playing against teams representing Wide Bay and South Burnett, and we wish them all the best on the day.

The Mooloolah Mob walking group

Yes, we’re still walking and would love you to join us. This group has now been walking for about six years and for some of us that’s well over 3000km covered. We walk each Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6.30am for about an hour. We meet at Martin Rungert Park and walk a variety of routes about the local area. It’s a great way to start the day and to meet new friends. You don’t have to walk every day, or for the whole hour, just do as much as you feel you can. Please consider joining our friendly little group for a great start to the day. We hope to see you soon. For more details phone Helen on 5494 7496.

Glasshouse Country Baptist Church 58 Roberts Rd, Beerwah

Br John Stevenson Glasshouse Country Anglican Church There are just some jobs we consider too dirty or gross. We wouldn’t want to do them and would sometimes try to avoid those that do. Much would have been the case in Jesus time, except Jesus honed in on these guys and made them his peeps! Jesus reached out to those who were supposed to be shunned. In Jesus time, perhaps the most wretched Jesus consoled and companioned were the tax collectors and prostitutes. Neither disease, nor demons, nor DNA made these people outcasts. They had professions that they knew would make them outcasts among their own people and despised by the people they served. The tax collectors were instruments of the foreign powers used against Israel’s political identity while prostitutes were instruments used against Israel’s ethnic and cultural identity. Yet it’s precisely these two groups, one the most dangerous and the other the most despicable, that Jesus singled out and elevated above ‘the chief priests and elders of the people.’ Not a great career move! Jesus didn’t care about the offense he was giving. He cared about the defence he was building! Jesus sided with the tax collectors and prostitutes not because of what they were — but because of what they’d become. You see it was these guys who received John the Baptist. These guys who’d heard his call to repentance, who’d responded to his invitation to baptism. What those tax collectors and prostitutes had done in the past was overwritten and overcome by what they’d done in John’s presence. Faith and repentance had bumped them up from the bottom of the heap to the first in line. This wasn’t a message that went down well with those who were ‘large and in charge.’ You gotta love this guy, this is an ‘in your face, pull no punches, bare-knuckled assault’ on someone’s

reputation and authority. This is a message guaranteed to make enemies! We’re always reminded that that Jesus told us to ‘love’ our enemies. But Jesus never said don’t MAKE enemies. In fact Jesus’ directive to ‘love’ your enemy assumes that enemies will abound! A reality of life folks, if you stand for something, someone else will stand against you. Jesus words and actions remind us that we’re not called simply to be Nice. If we’re to really fulfil our calling and mission as Disciples of Christ, being Nice just won’t cut it. Jesus made enemies by revealing the unflattering truth to the people most perfectly positioned and poised to cause him the greatest harm. Be assured, going on the offensive for Christ will give offense. Jesus offended, but not with ‘holier than thou’ righteousness, but rather with an offensive defence of the marginalised whose humanity was being minimalised. A great little pearl of wisdom; sometimes the best way to ‘love our enemies’ is by showing them how wrong they are! I like the story of the centenarian interviewed by a reporter who asked; “what one thing are you most proud of after having lived such a long life?” The old man replied, “well here I am, 100 years old and I don’t have a single enemy in the world.” The impressed reporter responded, “that’s truly remarkable, how’s that possible? “Well,” says the old man, “I’ve bloody outlived every one of them.” Love your enemies, but don’t be afraid to stand up to them. Blessings

Gone fishin’…. Four guys had been going on the same fishing trip for many years. Two days before the group was to leave, Ron’s wife put her foot down and told him he wasn’t going. Ron’s mates were very upset that he couldn’t go, but what could they do? Two days later, the three got to the camping site only to find Ron sitting there with a tent set up, firewood gathered, and dinner cooking on the fire. “Wow! Ron, how long have you been here, and how did you talk your missus into letting you go?”

“Well, I’ve been here since yesterday. Last night I was sitting in my chair and my wife came up behind me and put her hands over my eyes and said, ‘guess who?’. I pulled her hands off, and she was wearing a brand new nightie. She took my hand and pulled me to our bedroom... The room had candles and rose petals all over. On the bed she had handcuffs, and ropes! She told me to tie and cuff her to the bed, and I did. And then she said, ‘do whatever you want.’ So, here I am.”

You may meet people who will open up new opportunities for you. You can learn a lot from others at this time.
