OCTOBER 12 2016
O
n Friday night we headed along to Sculpture on the Edge, if you checked out last week’s paper you would be familiar with the dramatic green man on the cover which was one of the entries. I have to say it is definitely an annual event that changes dramatically from year to year. For those of us who can appreciate art, but don’t have the level of creativity required to create these dramatic pieces, it is definitely a real eye-opener. One of the things I really love is that while it may be an art exhibition you are definitely not confined to a gallery space. Basically you get to wander around the garden and be surprised at what is around the next corner, hidden under a tree, or positioned in a garden bed. And there are definitely some rather quirky pieces, and being a lover of the dramatic and unexpected, I have to say the chandelier type construction made of milk bottles and sheer fabric handing from a tree branch definitely caught my eye! The exhibition is on until October 23, so if you are around Maleny, head down to Spicers Tamarind at 99 Spicers Lane South and have a look, there is no charge and you can also enter the competition for people’s choice and possibly win a prize as well. Local News BMX girl power! Following on from her recent success at the State Championships, 10-year-old Kameli Jones now has her heart firmly set on reaching the Australian Titles early next year in her chosen sport of BMX racing. Kameli represents the local Hinterland BMX club based at Mooloolah which has around 100 members. With membership predominately male, Kameli often finds herself racing against the boys. Kameli has been involved with BMX since she was seven, and a couple of years ago, decided that she wanted to do more competitive racing outside of the club. She currently trains twice a week but spends time most days practicing her sport.

This year she set herself the goal to make the regional team. Achieving this level of competition, she went on to be selected for the Queensland State championships held on September 24 - 25. At the state championships Kameli made it to the finals and was placed 8th and 5th in the two categories she competed in. “I’m proud of myself for making the finals as I’ve been training very hard. I think girls are as good as boys in BMX racing and I like going fast and winning!” said Kameli. Training is now underway for her next goal of reaching the Australian Titles. We wish her all the very best in her chosen sport.

Railway upgrade plans progressed Back in June, the Department of Transport and Main Roads presented their consultation plans to the local community for the Beerburrum to Nambour Rail Upgrade Project (or ‘B2N’), concentrating on the section from Beerburrum to Landsborough. These upgrades form part of the long-awaited plan for the duplication of the North Coast line. The community meetings held at the Landsborough Sports Centre and the Glass House Hall included options for removal of the level crossings at Barrs Road, Glass House Mountains and Caloundra Road, Landsborough. The department have taken the community feedback into consideration and have now come back with more detailed reference designs which they are asking for further comment on. To facilitate this, public information sessions are once more being held at Landsborough Sports Complex, Tunnel Ridge Road (October 15, 10.00am – 12.30pm; and October 18, 5.30pm – 8.00pm) and Glass House Mountains Community Hall, Coonowrin Road (October 19, 5.30pm – 8.00pm). The reference designs show that the Landsborough level crossing is to close, being replaced with a flyover starting from a new roundabout on Caloundra Road, swinging behind the police station then over Railway Street, the railway line, Old Landsborough Road and down through the back of the council depot to join onto the Stevens Street and Maleny Street intersection (see diagram for details).

Consequently, it appears at least nine houses will need to be resumed for the road footprint. Another major change for Landsborough will be the construction of a substantial park-and-ride facility on the eastern side of the railway line, between it and Dwyer Street, resulting in at least three homes being resumed. Further south, the plans to close the Barrs Road level crossing are offset by a northern extension of Barrs Road adjacent to the western side of the railway line, which then swings west through bushland and horse paddocks to join onto Coonowrin Road almost opposite Gardner Street. To improve the railway alignment, there is to be some repositioning of the rail corridor through a number of areas including: • from Youngs Road to Glass House township; • the curve opposite the Glasshouse Sports Club;

This last section will consequently result in the expansion and realignment of the Evans Road intersection with Steve Irwin Way, as well as a significant easterly realignment of a stretch of Steve Irwin Way from near Nursery Road, across the paddocks and choko crops, re-joining the existing road corridor at about 690 Steve Irwin Way. Other upgrades identified include: • expansion of the park and ride at Beerburrum station; • an upgraded rail bridge at Beerburrum and Glass House Mountains; and • replacing the single platform at Mooloolah station with a dual platform connected by an over-bridge. The Queensland Government is committed to the progressive priority upgrade of the North Coast Line to improve its safety, efficiency and reliability. An important part of this upgrade is the Beerburrum to Nambour Rail Upgrade Project (B2N Project). For the project to progress, a detailed business case is being developed to identify the benefits, the problems to be solved and the most appropriate way to achieve the desired outcomes. This will enable government to make an informed investment decision about the project. Get involved Feedback received from consultation undertaken earlier this year has been considered by the B2N Project team during the development of the reference design. The B2N Project team will hold more community information sessions in Landsborough and Glass House Mountains this month.
These sessions will allow residents and stakeholders to view the latest reference design, discuss the project, ask questions and provide feedback. Session times and locations are: Landsborough Sports Complex 15 Tunnel Ridge Road, Landsborough Saturday 15 October: 10am–12.30pm Tuesday 18 October: 5.30pm–8pm Glass House Mountains Community Hall 8 Coonowrin Road, Glass House Mountains Wednesday 19 October: 5.30pm–8pm Community displays will also be available at key locations across the Sunshine Coast, including council offices and libraries. Aussie golf legends set to tee off in Maleny – sponsors wanted Some of the greatest legends in Australian Golf are expected to take part in an inaugural E-Z-GO PGA Legends Pro-Am event at the new Maleny Golf Club in the picturesque Sunshine Coast Hinterland later this year and organisers are now calling for sponsors to get behind the event. The tournament, being scheduled for the weekend of December 17-18 on Maleny’s links-style 9-hole layout, should attract a large number of the Legends Players who will already be visiting the region to play in the Sunshine Coast Masters. Former Major Championship winners Wayne Grady (US PGA), Ian Baker-Finch (The Open) along with Australian golfing legends such as Rodger Davis, Peter Fowler, Michael Harwood, Michael Clayton and Peter Senior all feature regularly on the E-Z-GO PGA Legends Tour. Designed by Graham Papworth, the award-winning Maleny course is maintained to an exceptionally high standard, earning Superintendent Mick McCombe the industry’s 2016 national award for excellence in golf course maintenance. Maleny Golf Club President and 2015 Queensland Sports Volunteer of the Year Dr Max Whitten said the tournament was looking to attract prize money of around $15,000 from a range of sponsors and become a regular event on the annual Legends Tour. “This tournament will provide sponsors with a unique and exciting promotional opportunity to market their businesses and help create a truly premier community event which should appeal to

Former Peachester resident Ian Baker-Finch both professional and amateur players, as well as spectators,” Dr Whitten said. Maleny Golf Club is working with experienced sports event manager Brett Holdway from BH Sports Management to plan and promote this inaugural E-Z-GO PGA Pro-Am and establish it as a signature annual event for the Sunshine Coast Hinterland region. Mr Holdway said the E-Z-GO PGA Legends Tour was a Professional golf circuit managed by the PGA of Australia for professional golfers aged 50 and over – the flagship event being the Australian PGA Seniors Championship played in November each year. “Approximately 70 tournaments operate throughout Australia and New Zealand, with approximately AU$1 million in prize money on offer annually and I believe this proposed event in Maleny has great appeal and should be well supported,” Mr Holdway said. Beerwah High Student attends Conservatorium music program During the recent September School Holidays, 900 of the State’s finest young secondary school music students participated in the ‘State Honours Ensemble Program (SHEP) Qld 2016’ held at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University’s South Bank campus. Attendees were selected from more than 2,000 students, representing 169 schools throughout the state. The esteemed four-day music intensive program allowed the selected students the fantastic opportunity to work alongside renowned international and national conductors. The intensive rehearsals produced a series of grand finale concerts which were open to the public and performed at the Conservatorium Theatre on Sunday, October 2. Year 11 Beerwah High Student, Simon Redshaw, was one of the talented young musicians selected. This is the second time that Simon has been selected to attend SHEP which is now in its 16th year, earlier this year he also participated in ‘Creative Generation’ another State program. His main instrument is the clarinet, which he has played for nearly 10 years, and he also plays the saxophone - which he started to learn in high school. “I was really excited to be accepted again to attend this year as I know there are heaps of awesome musicians who also apply. It’s an honour and a really exciting experience. Working with new conductors and musicians was a highlight as it was four days of concentrated music which was great,” explained Simon.
Beerwah High Student Simon Redshaw attended the prestigious SHEP The program ran from Thursday, September 29 to Sunday, October 2 and involved three days of rehearsal, each day for five hours. During the time, participants rehearsed three new pieces and it was all ensemble based with two sectional rehearsals. In showcasing the talent of the students involved, SHEP Qld featured a Big Band, four Wind Orchestras, two String Orchestras, a Celtic String Ensemble, four Vocal Ensembles and a Symphony Orchestra. Simon performed in the finale with the Brian Hogg Wind Orchestra. “The finale was fantastic - everyone performed well thanks largely to the skill of the conductor, Dr Cynthia Johnson. It really was the highlight of the program,” said Simon.

Riley lovers
By Sonia Clark
Although the last Riley badged car was produced in 1969, for many enthusiasts the excitement of owning one of these classic timber framed cars, is as strong as ever. Recently GC&M News was contacted by Maleny resident Phillip Wyllie who is the editor of of the Queensland Riley Car club magazine. The club had a 'Garage Run' and Riley enthusiasts from SE Queensland visited the homes (and garages!) of two local members based in Maleny – Phillip and the club president, Ken Lonie. Phillip has owned a Riley since 1982. At the time he was living in WA and owned a classic 1948 Morris 10 - a chance encounter on his street with a man driving a Riley ignited his interest in these vehicles. The driver mentioned that he knew where Phillip could buy one and subsequently Phillip went on to purchase his first 1948 Riley car. Because of its poor condition it was affectionately known by members of the WA Riley Club as ‘The Yellow Peril!’. Phillip went on to restore the car which was originally built in Coventry, England and renamed it ‘Harold’.
A second Riley sedan (1949 RMB) was purchased in 2005 when Phillip and his wife Doreen were living in Toowoomba, and the car was placed in storage until the couple moved to Brisbane – the car has since been restored and named ‘George’. In 2014 a Sydney friend alerted Phillip to a Convertible Riley that was located at Murray Bridge in SA. Said to be first owned by Wallace Bishop, subsequent owners parked the car on Coronation Drive in Brisbane which went under in the 1974 flood. He was in deplorable condition and almost everyone thought he could not be restored. He is now nearing completion as a restored car and his name is ‘Albert’. As a committed enthusiast, Phillip drives one of his cars most days, and has now also purchased a 1936 Riley Falcon from a person in Sydney and plans are now underway for a future restoration.

“I love playing with Rileys. There is a woodworking workshop here where Riley frames are made, a garage where motors and gearboxes are assembled etc. Currently I am assembling another motor for George following a catastrophic engine failure during the National Rally earlier this year,” explained Phillip. While Phillip has an enviable collection, club president Ken Lonie, also has an impressive selection of three cars; a prewar Riley Monaco, a 1949 Riley sedan and a Riley Sports special (a Special is a car with Riley parts but significantly remodelled). Phillip has enjoyed membership of Riley clubs around Australia since 1982. Anyone is welcome to join the Riley club of Queensland and currently the club has three types of members – Riley owners, those who are hoping to purchase a Riley car, social club members and those who have a general interest in vintage cars and may own other type of classic car. If you would like to find out more, please visit www.rileyqld.org.au or contact Phillip directly on 5499 9826.

Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce update with Ursula Starkovsky
On September 20 we invited Chamber Members and the broader community to a presentation by Stocklands with regards to Beerwah East and Halls Creek, the two parcels of land to be designated as Identified Growth Areas (IGAs), with almost 30 people attending. Stockland’s Adrian Allen introduced and explained Stockland’s community commitment and plans for the future. He mentioned that we currently have a huge shortfall of dwellings and a very limited supply. He said this might not impact greatly at the moment but will have a very significant impact in future. There are different views with regards to the above parcels of land between Stocklands and our council. Stocklands lobbies that both sides be included in the South East Queensland Regional Plan and dealt with at their merits individually. Mark Stephens, a Water Quality Expert, explained to the audience the different effects storm water runoff will have on the passage. Stocklands has kindly provided us with a digital version of the slide show which I would be happy to send to interested parties. Please contact
me on 0459 995 979 or per email info@ glasshousemountains.com.au to secure your copy. The Chamber is also in the process of organising a similar meeting with Council Representatives who will present council’s ideas and proposals. This will give us a good overall understanding of the visions, problems and future plans from both sides. We are hoping to organise this event for our November meeting. The next Chamber Meeting will be a General Meeting for members only to be held on October 18 at the Glasshouse Sports Club.
ATTENTION CHAMBER MEMBERS The next Chamber Meeting will be a General Meeting for members only to be held on October 18 at the Glasshouse Sports Club, 5.30pm for a 6.00pm start.

New Apothecary opens in Maleny Sharon Hudson has just opened her Fire and Water Healing Centre in the main street of Maleny above the Maleny Community Centre. Sharon has been a keen student of natural medicines and treatments for most of her life, and her mother was a student of Dennis Stewart a Western Herbal medicine guru back in the 80’s. Sharon says her mum is a super fit 83-year-old in perfect health and is a great example of the effects of living a life using traditional herbal remedies. After bringing up five children and using traditional medicines frequently to treat her family and friends, Sharon felt the need to combine her intuitive traditional knowledge with the latest medical discoveries and research. Sharon then attended University and after an intensive four years of study completed her degree and has a Bachelor of Health Science Naturopathy, Nutrition and Western Herbal medicine. She has also studied in a number of fields including homeopath, bush flower essences and Iridology. Sharon always felt a strong connection to the land and natural remedies and after tracking her family tree found that her great, great grandmother was an aboriginal medicine woman and midwife. Sharon’s dream was to open a herbal dispensary along the lines of the ancient Apothecary where many different natural remedies were stocked, prescribed and prepared for people to go and get free expert advice and have their own special formula mixed for them on the spot. Sharon wants the healing centre to be a meeting and healing place for wellness both physically and mentally.

ihear Beerwah - Your LOCAL Hearing Professionals One in six Australians is affected by hearing loss – that’s an estimated 3.5 million people. Hearing loss in Australia is mainly mild in nature, but one third of people experience a loss that is moderate or severe to profound.
The number of Australians who are hearing impaired or deaf is increasing because of long-term exposure to excessive noise in the workplace, the environment and a result of an ageing population. Hearing loss is projected to increase to 1 in every 4 Australians by 2050.
The prevalence of hearing loss rises from 1% for people aged younger than 15 years to three in every four people aged over 70 years.

Community News
Don’t miss out on Melbourne Cup fun It’s not every day you get to sip some bubbles, enjoy the race that stops the nation and support a community kindergarten at the same time. In fact, that opportunity only comes once a year. The Beerwah Kindergarten's Melbourne Cup fundraiser lunch is back for the fourth year and is set to be the best yet with a funky retro ‘50s and ‘60s dress code that will set it apart from any November 1 function on the Coast. Proceeds from the event will go towards major projects for the Beerwah Kindy. In the past, these have included major renovations, upgrades of
facilities and the latest project, installing clean bark and new turf in the natural outdoor play space. Kindy co-director Rebecca Mackintosh said the kindy has been a long-standing part of the community. Events like the Melbourne Cup day allowed people to get involved with strengthening the kindy environment for current students and those who will attend in the future, she said. They will also have fun in the process! Tickets cost $40.00 per head and include a two-course lunch at the Beerwah Hotel, a glass of bubbly on arrival, Jockey Bingo, raffles, prizes for the different Fashions on the Field categories and a special fashion parade featuring some kindy mums sponsored by Poison Kandy Klothing and Memorabilia. To make sure you secure your seat at the funkiest place to be this Melbourne Cup Day, book your ticket by calling the Hotel on 5494 0555.
Spring Fair on the Beerwah Tower Green The QCWA Beerwah Branch is presenting a Spring Fair, a free community event on Saturday, November 5, showcasing local artisan market stalls, local community groups, and local School P&F associations. In addition to the market and community stalls, there will be live music from local young musicians and school performances under the Butterfly Towers. Handmade kites that have been made as part of two after school library workshops will be displayed on the day, with the colouring in competition entries on display and winners announced inside the CWA Hall. The colouring competition, featuring the Butterfly Towers, kites and a spring theme, will be available from certain places in town, including Office Smart (formally Beerwah Print and Stationary) and the Beerwah Library. The Beerwah CWA ladies will be serving tea, and home baked goods from healthy Country Kitchen recipes inside the CWA Hall. The award winning CWA members will have a bumper stall of hand crocheted and crafted goods, as well as their renowned hand baked cakes and slices on their stall. It is planned that the Spring Fair will become an annual event, complementing the already monthly community markets taking place on
the Beerwah Tower Green. The change in hours from 8.00am to 1.00pm, to 10.00am to 3.00pm is hoped to make it a more accessible event for families and locals to attend. The addition of the school participation and performances, and the free kid’s activities to the market day give opportunity for our local community to celebrate a free family community event in Simpson Street. Support from Celebrate Beerwah Inc means we are able to provide free entertainment, free face painting, free roaming entertainment from Andino, and Sunshine's Hoop Love throughout the day. Thanks to Jasper Jumping Castles for the kids jump for free bouncy castle. Support has been received by the Sunshine Coast Council, to ensure this is a great day for our local community. For any enquiries please email qcwabeerwah@ gmail.com.
Pedestrian crossings in Maleny Member for Glass House Andrew Powell recently explained to GC&M News that over the years he has been asked many times about what can be done to improve safety around the two pedestrian crossings in town. Andrew said he has passed on numerous suggestions and solutions from constituents to the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) hoping we could get some improvements. “I am pleased to announce that TMR have conducted another round of Andrew Powell with local resident Ronne Wildman
safety assessments on the two crossings in Maple Street and they believe that some improvements could be made to further enhance motorists’ awareness of the pedestrian crossings,” he said. Whilst the first crossing (near the IGA) has already been updated with the new colour standard which is fluorescent with a reflective yellow/ green background - the second crossing (near the chemist) has not been updated and the Department has committed to having this rectified. They have also undertaken to install double-sided pedestrian crossing signs on the concrete centre islands facing both directions at each crossing. They believe that these additional signs will make the approaching crossings more visible to motorists. The new signage will be installed by the end of December. “I'm sure it will be welcomed by the many residents who have raised this concern with me,” he said. www.gcnews.com.au
Blooming wonderful Orchid Show Contributed by Jenny Kelly The highly anticipated Glasshouse Country Orchid Show has come and gone for another year. The quality of the displays was exceptional, with contributions from seven societies. The Glasshouse Orchid Society won for best overall display, and no wonder with the calibre of plants grown by our members. Dedicated growers Sue and Paul Jones were rewarded for their efforts with the Grand Champion Rosette for their beautiful Cymbidium Baltic Glacier ‘Mint Ice’. Another club member, Theo Beenders, took out Reserve Champion with his wonderfully grown Oncidium Jungle Monarch. Our lucky raffle prize winners were Kelly Shaw from Peachester, second prize went to Joan Raby of Nambour and third prize was won by Judy Duncombe of Beerwah. Julia Bell was spot on with her guess of 196 to take out the flower count guess. Such a great show as this can’t happen without the dedication of all our members, and the terrific support we receive from local businesses.

Glasshouse Country Orchid Society has a wealth of knowledge which our members are only too willing to share. The society welcomes new members and encourages anyone interested in orchids to come along to our Interested Grower meetings. For more information on our group, feel free to have a look at our website glasshouseorchids.com.au and our Facebook page.
Calling on all Holden Ute owners! Organisers of the Glasshouse Country Community Carols are looking for the Hinterlands best ‘Rusty (or not) Holden Ute’ to feature at this years’ event which will be held at the Beerwah Sportsgrounds on Saturday, December 17. Community members are
encouraged to send through a photo of their own rustic treasure to be featured in the night. Although a more ‘rustic looking’ Holden ute would be ideal, organisers are more than happy for locals to enter any type of Holden Ute which can be featured at the event. If you would like to enter, email a picture through to production@ glasshousecommunitycarols.com. Entries will be featured on the Glasshouse Country Community Carols Facebook page as well as the GC&M News Facebook pages in the lead up to the event.
The Beerwah RSL Sub Branch is holding a barbecue on Wednesday, October 26 at the Beerwah Sportsground from 11.00am – 2.00pm. This is part of acknowledging the importance of Social Connection ‘the relationship people have with others’, which is the theme of Veterans’ Health Week 2016, which runs from Saturday, October 22 to Sunday, October 30. Social connection includes relationships with family, friends, colleagues and neighbours, as well as connections people make through paid or unpaid work, volunteering, sport and other leisure activities. And these relationships are beneficial to both your health and wellbeing. Although there will be no charge for the barbecue, a gold coin donation would be much appreciated. Any money raised will go towards our fundraising for a 6 X 6 metre shed that we hope to build. This shed would be used to house the RSL Welfare Vehicle as well as a secure storage for all our gear that is used in our commemoration activities. All veterans and partners are welcome, however please contact Bert on 0488 013 791 ASAP to confirm your attendance for catering purposes.

Old school days School slates, slate pencils, ink wells and nib pens were just a few of the items from old school days which fascinated Year 3 students who recently visited from Buderim’s Immanuel Lutheran College. Pupils’ writing their exercises on slates was an entrenched practice going back to the 1800s. It wasn’t until the mass production of paper from eucalypt pulp in the 1940s that slates began to be replaced by paper. Early concerns had been raised over the unhygienic methods being used by pupils to clean their slates. Spit was a common ingredient! In the days before computers and keyboards, Year 3 students did all of their written work by hand. Typewriters and keyboards were introduced into formal education at secondary school level. Our young student visitors nowadays take keyboards for granted. Thanks to the generosity of one of the Friends of Bankfoot House, the students are able and eager to try their typing skills on an ‘old fashioned’ typewriter donated for this purpose. Imagine the anxiety when they find that gentle pressure on the keys does not produce the desired mark on the paper or the machine stops at the end of a line and does not automatically move to the next. The collection of school exercise books written by the Burgess children in the early 1900s is another source of wonder. Written with a pen and nib dipped in blue ink, they are as clear to read today as they were when written a hundred years ago. The subjects are headed with words such as parsing, dictation, grammar, arithmetic, mensuration and geography. There are School Papers produced by the Education Department containing stories of current and past history, poems and information about various objects of nature. No wonder one of the boys, after completing his tour of the house and its treasures, was moved to exclaim, “This is fun!” Interested in learning more about Bankfoot House? Contact the Friends of Bankfoot House on 5493 0197 on a Wednesday or email friends@ bankfoothouse.org. Ron Gillinder, President – 0407 760 989, in conjunction with the Sunshine Coast Council.

Modern business practices ensure market leadership
Community Group
Updates
Lion’s efforts recognised
Business feature Geoff Karuse from 3D Sails is an excellent example of an established business owner adding an ‘additional feather to his corporate cap’ by investing in the Transportable Shade Shed business model; which he can tailor to perfectly compliment his existing work. Geoff owns a highly successful shade sail and structure business which operates along the south coast of New South Wales. Along with his business partner Ian, they established their shade solution business in 2002 and their projects include both residential and commercial work and government work. The long running business manufactures and installs shade sails and structures, and the company supplies and installs products from the A.C.T. to Nowra, Bega and Bateman’s Bay – where the business is based. With over 35 years’ trade experience, Geoff prides himself on providing customers with a very high level of attention to detail and the best quality materials and products available. Recently a contact in Bega drew Geoff and Ian’s attention to the versatility of Transportable Shade Sheds and Geoff realised that here was a high quality product range that would allow him to effectively expand his product line by becoming a reseller. Geoff was attracted to the viability of offering his customers additional coverage options. As a shade solution specialist, by becoming a Transportable Shade Shed reseller, Geoff was keen to ensure that his business will remain a market leader. As well as attention to detail and a commitment to providing the highest quality materials and products, 3D Sails has easily embraced modern technology with the use of social marketing tools and up-to-date computer generated imagery quoting software. They use computer technology to aid in the design, and by taking digital images of the project area (including a more unique ‘bird’s eye view’) they supply clients with a computer simulation of the finished shade solution. This ease of incorporating up-to-the-minute sales and marketing tools correlates well with the modern business model of Transportable Shade Sheds and it’s collaboration with the online mentoring and cloud based support options of Saver6.com. With a strong client base of councils and schools up and down the coast, Geoff also saw a viable market in the potential requirements for dangerous goods storage sheds – one of the newer product lines offered by Transportable Shade Sheds. This avenue of additional business, coupled with the traditional shade coverage lines which has huge market potential in the coastal region, cemented Geoff’s decision to become a reseller. “I particularly like the high quality of the Australian made materials, including the fully galvanised steel. By becoming a reseller, I can offer my customers an additional product that is cost effective, easy to install, requires no D.A. approval, but is incredibly versatile and be modified easily,” says Geoff. If you know someone looking for a Transportable Shade Shed around the Bateman’s Bay area, please contact Geoff via social media or on 0402 804 334. If you would like to find out more about opportunities in your area or are keen to be your own boss, or look at business options that may work well with your current industry, then contact the team at Transportable Shade Sheds on 1300 667 433 or Saver6.com on 1300 918 771.
Please call Geoff Karuse, a Saver6.com member and a Transportable Shade Shed specialist. He is available to help you get your Transportable Shade Shed on your property.

The Lions Club of Maleny Blackall Range was recently awarded the District 201Q3 Club of the Year Award for the second year in a row. This is an outstanding achievement and is a result of a lot of hard work and commitment from club members. The District covers the area from Brisbane north of the River, West to Charleville and to Maleny and the Blackall Range on the Sunshine Coast and has 72 clubs in the area. While the club is the largest in the district with 65 members, this doesn’t guarantee them the win, as it is all about performing best across a wide spectrum of Club activities (which change each year) during the preceding year. Criteria considered include membership retention and growth, participation in State and National programs for service and fundraising, such as the Lions Medical Research Personality Quest, health, sight and youth programs such as Youth of the Year and Youth Exchange, and Christmas cake sales. Attendance at Lions administrative meetings is important for the executive, as is PR in both the Club bulletin and local newspapers, and these too earn points. The next event the club will be holding is the Maleny Mountain View Challenge on Sunday, October 16, at the Showgrounds, with funds raised going to the Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation. It’s important enough on their calendar to have one of the Trustees and current secretary of the Foundation attend.
Glasshouse View Club
Contributed by Janet Kitchin This month’s outing for the Glasshouse Country View Club was to Ewen Maddock dam on October 5. A group of our ladies met up for morning tea with raffles, chat and lots of laughter, together with a walk around the dam for those wishing to take the exercise and enjoy the lovely day. Our next luncheon meeting is on Wednesday, October 19 at the Glasshouse Sports Club in Steve Irwin Way and starts at 11.00am. It is Poverty Week and we will be having a speaker from Suncoast Care at Nambour. Any ladies who are interested in joining our club should contact either Lynda on 5494 7875 or Maree on 5494 6956 for more information. View Clubs support the Smith Family activities including the ‘Learning for Life’ program.

Prickly characters Although we generally dislike plants with thorns, prickles and hooks (for good reason if you come into contact with them!) they do play a very important role in establishing habitat for smaller wildlife and often have a few bonus features. On the Sunshine Coast we have quite a few native Raspberries (Rubus species) that although prickly to us, provide habitat by way of food and refuge for small mammals and birds such as Eastern Whip Birds Psophodes olivaceus. The bonus with them all, are the tasty fruit for us. In particular Native Raspberry Rubus probus has a juicy, tasty and potentially (if cultivated) abundant crop of fruit. Rose Leaved Bramble Rubus rosifolius has an equally abundant crop and great flavour, but can be a bit drier in texture. The Brambleberry Rubus moluccanus is a very vigorous scrambler, with the added bonus of being great for sealing edges and boundaries from unwanted access and also producing a very tasty fruit. A few other prickly native plants include Orange Box Thorn Pittosporum multiflorum a small glossy foliaged shrub; Currant Bush Carissa ovata a rambling vine or shrub with glossy foliage, Native Capers Capparis spp. and of course Wait-a-while Calamus muelleri, this very prickly rainforest vine is not for your average backyard, but is a great small bird nesting habitat plant and produces a supple cane for basket making. Consider adding prickly plants like Raspberries for your plantings. You can enjoy the fruit and the wildlife will be thankful for their new home.
Environment Fancy a walking trip and working bee? The Coochin Creek Bushland Group will be holding a walking trip and working bee in the Upper Coochin Creek Environmental Reserve in Beerwah on Tuesday, October 18 from 8.00am – 11.00am. This time we plan to walk from the edge of the Coochin Creek in Caralan Park to the big fig tree at the junction with Sandy Creek, then out to the esplanade and back along a path to the starting point. The object is to inspect the condition of the reserve, to collect rubbish and to weed as required. Anybody interested in bushland care and regeneration is welcome to come along. The walk will be through forest. It isn't easy walking and you are advised to wear boots, a long sleeved shirt and pants, and to carry a water bottle. We may see interesting Community Nature Conservation wildlife like python and scarlet Officer Rhonda Martin with a very honeyeaters on the way. The work cheeky visitor is carried out under the guidance of the Sunshine Coast Council, all equipment required, including tick repellent, is supplied. Participation is free, and tea will be served on return. The starting point is located at the back of Caralan Park which is on the corner of Caralan Way and Emma Place in Beerwah. Understorey plants are often overlooked. These pretty little native groundcovers deserve a place in our gardens – not just for their exquisite little flowers! The delightfully named Love Flower (Pseuderanthemum variabile), for instance, is an excellent host plant for butterflies including the Australian Leafwing and the Blue-banded Eggfly. Love Flower is a sparsely-branched herbaceous plant about 20cm tall with attractive white, mauve or blue five-petalled flowers. It prefers light shade and a well-drained site. Mazus pumilio or Swamp Mazus bears unusual asymmetrical lilacblue flowers from spring to summer. Rosettes of bright green, tufted leaves spread by rhizomes to form dense mats. It is an ideal native ground cover for wet to waterlogged soils, can tolerate full sun or part shade and is frost-hardy. Lobelia quadrangularis is a native lobelia found in moist and sandy situations from northern NSW to north Queensland. This prostrate mat-forming plant has bright blue flowers to 10mm across with two petals pointing upwards opposing three downwards-pointing petals. Flowering occurs from spring to autumn. These attractive native plants are available now from Barung’s nursery in Porters Lane, Maleny. Barung Landcare is a leading community-based organisation working to develop ethical solutions for a sustainable future. We support local and regional community empowerment to conserve and enhance the rich diversity of natural resources of the Blackall Range and environs. Kids just want to have fun! When we see children playing we can see that they are having fun and enjoying themselves, but research shows us that play is also an important part of a child’s learning and development. It engages all of the child’s senses and provides opportunities for social, emotional, physical and cognitive learning. It allows children to process information which children apply to solve problems and understand their environment and the world they live in. The humble play dough …. When children play with play dough - squishing it, rolling it, cutting and arranging it - they are developing their hand muscles, fine motor skills and coordination. The development of these muscles and skills are important for future tasks such as handwriting. Play dough enables children to use their imagination and creativity which facilitates broader thinking. This deeper thinking is important in preparing children for the learning tasks ahead in school and some say is as important as learning their alphabet and counting. Children generally have short attention spans and when we observe children playing we often see them flit from one activity to another. Play dough (and other sensory play) keeps children engaged for longer periods and helps to develop children’s attention spans. Play dough, being a sensory activity, is calming and soothing and can help children to release
tension. It aids their emotional development and in group situations provides opportunities to learn social skills such as sharing, cooperating and contributing to group dramatic play. Play dough is easy to make and a safe ‘cooking’ activity which children really enjoy. It allows them to practice counting, measuring, sequencing concepts and science (how materials change when combined) not to mention decision making – what colour will it be? Is it squishy enough? Will I add sparkles today? So the next time you are looking at that messy play dough aftermath, take heart in the knowledge that you are providing a rich learning experience for your child! Here is an easy (no cook) play dough recipe that your child can help make. ¼ cup table salt 1 cup flour 1 teaspoon oil food colouring, sprinkles etc. enough water to make a firm dough (keep refrigerated in an air tight container)

Landsborough Girl Guides
Contributed by Pheonix, Unicorn and Ladybird (Landsborough Guide Leaders) The Landsborough Girl Guides worked really hard at their recent Craft Day to make items to sell at the Kids for Kids Market at the Beerwah CWA during the school holidays. The girls really enjoyed the experience of having their own stall and it was a great opportunity for them to promote Guides. They are now looking forward to having their first Sausage Sizzle at Beerwah Woolworths on October 22. The group meet each Tuesday from 4.30pm – 6.30pm and the fee to attend is $4.00, the first night is free. For those interested in finding out more about our group, we are holding a ‘Come and Try Day’ which will include camp fire cooking , some girl guide arts and crafts and some fun games to play. The event will be held on Tuesday, November 1 from 4.30pm – 6.30pm at the Landsborough Girl Guide Hut on Old Gympie Road South at Landsborough.

School News Running with the Lions The Lions Club of Maleny Blackall Range has been organising ‘running for fitness and fun’ for several years under the banner of The Mountain View Challenge which will run again this Sunday, October 16 from the Maleny Showground. Apart from events that appeal to experienced runners, such as the Half Marathon and the 10,000 metres, we have also catered for school - age children with a 5,000 metre event for High School students as well as open runners, and 3,000 metres for primary schoolers from Prep to Year 6 (entry cost is $5.00.) The young ones are not expected to run all the way if that is too much, but can combine running and walking to earn a token of participation. We want to draw the attention of everyone to the known benefit of physical fitness, from a very early age, on general health and strength and on educational success as well. The Lions want to support parents, principals and teachers in encouraging physical as well as intellectual achievement by showing that fitness can be fun. Running is such a primary activity, not requiring too much investment in equipment or venue, that can provide a life-long experience of wellness. To find out more about the event and registration check out the website malenyblackallrange.qld.lions.org.au/projectsmvc
Budding young scientists impress at USC awards Friction, physics and even rocket flights were put under the microscope at the University of the Sunshine Coast’s recent Science Research Awards. Dozens of young scientists from Sunshine Coast high schools competed at the event, showing off their poster displays and explaining their research projects to judges, including academics and industry scientists. Investigations included studies of the physics of somersaults, examinations of medically-backed and anecdotal acne cures, and assessments of vehicle crumple zones. One local Year 11 student from Glasshouse Christian College, Jesse Woods, explained his rocket-powered project to judges.
Local schools share in funds
Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle has congratulated the community groups who will be able to upgrade their facilities thanks to the Gambling Community Benefit Fund. Mooloolah Primary P&C Association successfully secured $31,818.18 to install air conditioning and Beerwah State High School will receive $22,670.90 to purchase new equipment. “It’s fantastic to see grass-roots community groups receive a helping hand to give back to our great community,” Mr McArdle said. “P&C Committees work incredibly hard for their schools and they should be very proud of their efforts.” The Gambling Community Benefit Fund provides one-off grants to Queensland not-for-profit community organisations, with revenues sourced from gaming taxes.

Elected
Representatives Andrew Wallace Federal Member for Fisher
September 16 was a very important day for Sunshine Coast motorists with the Federal Government announcing the successful tender for the $929.3 million upgrade to the Bruce Highway between Caloundra Road and the Sunshine Motorway. The Federal Government is contributing $743.4 million towards the project. After a long campaign by the LNP’s State and Federal Members, the Fulton Hogan - Seymour Whyte joint venture will begin preliminary works late this year. The project will widen the highway to six lanes and reduce congestion and travel times for thousands of hinterland residents who pass through the Caloundra Road Interchange each day. While this project is an important infrastructure upgrade for the Sunshine Coast, we must continue to pursue urgent upgrades to the Bruce from the Coast to Caboolture. The Federal Government has contributed $6.4 million towards the $8 million study that is currently being conducted by the Department of Transport and Main Roads. Due for completion in 2018, I am pushing hard to see that study fast-tracked so we can get on with the job of widening the highway to six lanes as soon as possible. On another note, Suncorp customers in Beerwah are justified in their disappointment following the bank’s decision to close the local branch on October 14. I have spoken directly with Suncorp Executives to express the disappointment of many locals who have contacted my office following the announcement. While I feel this is a shortsighted decision that will affect a growing area, it appears the bank is determined to press ahead with the closure. The town of Beerwah does have other banking options and I encourage everyone to use this opportunity to re-assess their banking loyalties. On Wednesday, September 28, I had the pleasure of attending the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre’s Annual General Meeting. The meeting gave me a great insight into the valuable contribution the Centre makes to the local community and I applaud the many volunteers and committee members involved. The Centre provides a number of community support services and I encourage you to donate or volunteer to ensure the team can continue its important work. I continue to be humbled by the amount of support and encouragement I have received since my election. Having lived in Eudlo for 12 years before moving to the Coast, I appreciate the benefits and some of the challenges of living west of the Bruce Highway. I will soon be bringing my mobile office to a location near you and key dates will soon be listed on my website: andrewwallacemp.com.au Alternatively, please don’t hesitate to get in touch directly by phoning my office on 5493 5556 or emailing andrew.wallace.mp@aph.gov.au

Kilcoy-Beerwah Road intersection
Several months ago I committed to sponsoring a petition requesting changes and improvements to the intersection of Kilcoy Beerwah Road and Old Gympie Road in Beerwah – the intersection near the Beerwah State School. In the past, both my colleague Mark McArdle and I have unsuccessfully lobbied the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) to provide a financial commitment to upgrade this intersection. I am now pleased to advise that local resident, Kel McNamara, has agreed to be the principal petitioner and as such we are requesting the House to call on the Minister for Main Roads to immediately commission planning, funding and construction of safety upgrades and to consider all options at this intersection. In the coming weeks I will be in the area encouraging residents to sign the written petition however you can also add your name to the e-petition which can be found at the following link: http://www.parliament.qld.gov.au/work-ofassembly/petitions/e-petitions
Mason’s Law
During the last Parliamentary sitting week, laws were passed making it mandatory for early childhood workers to report suspected cases of child abuse. This crucial extra layer of protection for Queensland kids follows a long and courageous battle by John and Sue Sandeman whose 16-month-old grandson, Mason Parker, was murdered in 2011 by his mother’s then-partner. After taking up the Sandemans’ campaign, Shadow Minister for Education Tracy Davis, introduced the Private Member’s Bill which will now become known as Mason’s Law. It will not bring a precious little boy back but it will ensure the 28,000 children currently in Queensland child care centres are kept safer.
Charity Cricket Match
The annual Charity Cricket Match between my Celebrity XI and the Maleny Maulers at Aub Cork Oval in Maleny will take place on Saturday, October 15 from 12.00noon. The competition is always fierce and the Maulers will be keen to try and reclaim the trophy after their loss last year. This annual match started many years ago to fundraise for the Pyjama Foundation (therefore explaining the team uniform). It was decided in the third year, after losing a Maleny local identity Dr Peter Oliver to lung cancer, that all fundraising efforts for future matches would be directed to Lung Foundation Australia. And so this tradition has continued and we welcome many of Peter’s family members each year. The local Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club well and truly get behind the day and will be there to set up a barbecue and provide drinks for sale. Everyone is welcome, so please come along and support this worthy cause and have a few laughs (probably at my expense).

Mooloolah breakfast meeting
Another productive Mooloolah Breakfast Meeting at Kenny’s Café was held last week with key topics including the requests for CCTV cameras because of undue vehicle behaviour and for more lighting at the Mooloolah Railway Station. These monthly community meetings provide local residents an opportunity to hear about upcoming projects, make proposals and raise any concerns. The meeting is on the first Thursday of each month at Kenny’s Café at 7.00am for a 7.30am start. Contact Mooloolah Community Centre, Darryl from Mooloolah Hardware, or my office on 5441 8043 or email lesleigh.elmes@ sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au for further information.
Grants support
A heads up, council is considering a $6,000 grant for the replacement of the side exit steps and landing at Mooloolah Public Hall Association Inc. at tomorrow’s Ordinary Meeting. Through the provision of community grants, council is committed to supporting the implementation of community initiatives and partnerships that align with our strategic corporate priorities and demonstrate a purpose that is in the interests of the community.
Community meeting on-site at Mooloolah Rec. Park
I will be calling a meeting for interested people and youth to finalise the direction for the Kids Skates Facility, off-leash dog park, Men’s Shed, walking path and exercise equipment opportunities. The State Government have now clearly stated, that there is no land available on QRail or TMR controlled land. Date to be advised and advertised through the Mooloolah Community Centre and Darryl at the Mooloolah Hardware Store.
New Mooloolah baker
Welcome to the new baker in town. I am told they are serving the best pies in the hinterland!
Public lighting
In a first for local government in Australia, Sunshine Coast Council’s Urban Lighting Master Plan (ULMP) has been endorsed which will see LED lighting deployed across our entire region. I’m also delighted to advise council is investigating having a ‘Dark Sky Park’ here on the Sunshine Coast. Dark Sky Parks share the same principles as our public lighting master plan and they are growing quickly in popularity internationally in astro tourism. We have identified Howells Knob Lookout as a wonderful possibility to be a dark sky park – the combination of high altitude and minimal light pollution means that presently the lookout is arguably the best dark sky observing location in South East Queensland. Other opportunities for a larger dark sky park venue that could facilitate greater capacity than Howell’s Knob are still being investigated.

Out & About Groucho brings audience into his show in Maleny Words and photos by Judith Ross-Smith International ‘Groucho’ star, Frank Ferrante, had fun with members of the audience while patrons roared laughing at the Maleny Arts Council show ‘An Afternoon with Groucho’ at the Community Centre recently. Incredibly energetic, Frank leapt from auditorium to stage and back, sang and danced and wisecracked the time away in true Groucho Marx style, keeping the clown tradition alive for a new generation. Afterwards he joined the patrons for a drink on the deck.

Swing into the Roaring Twenties By popular demand, the Maleny Arts Council brings back to the Community Centre one of the most exciting artists in recent years, this time in a brand new swinging show in cabaret style, performing at 2.00pm on Sunday, October 30. The Roaring Twenties features singer-actor Melissa Western with a hot band of Brisbane’s best musicians to re-create the authentic speakeasy of the twenties. According to program director Peter Lavery the audience will help create the atmosphere by dressing in theme and becoming the speakeasy crowd. “The hall will be set up with tables in cabaret style, and we expect people will invite their friends to make up a party and bring their own nibbles. The tables will suit six to eight, but if you want to come on your own or just with a friend we can find a table for you. “It will be more fun if the audience wears twenties costume, but we may have a few feather boas to lend to help you get in the mood if you feel that’s just a bridge too far! Melissa Western is backed by a live band on floor level, and the audience will want to sing along with some of the songs of the great icons of the twenties, Louis Armstrong, Cole Porter, Josephine Baker, Bessie Smith and more. Tickets at $30.00 and $25.00 (members) are available at www. malenyartscouncil.com, Maleny Information Centre or book a table by ringing John on 5494 2584. www.gcnews.com.au

You Said It Hi everyone
Recently I have been taken to task by a number of readers on a range of concerns they had about GC&M news’ approach to our letters page. This week I was reminded that a number of months ago I called time on letters about Climate Change as we had given it a very long hearing and explored all angles on the topic. I apologise to readers that I didn’t follow my own guidelines last week. So I have included one letter in response for the purpose of balance and we then will call it quits on that topic. Also I have been reminded that for many years, in the interest of giving all letter writers the opportunity to have their letters printed in the week they are sent, we had adopted the approach of not printing letters from the same writer more than once a fortnight, and for regular contributors, that they need to present new arguments and issues when contributing. The reasoning behind this is about being both fair and equitable and also to keep the ‘You said it Page’ fresh and interesting to readers. Regards,
Great barbecue
Thanks to the Glasshouse Neighbourhood Centre committee for another community barbecue. There was great entertainment and a big plate of lovely barbecue meats and salads for $4.00. How cheap is that? Make sure you don't miss out on the next one on Friday, November 25, from 5.00pm. M Rau Beerwah

2. 'Bird Collisions with Telecom Equipment', Albert Manville, PhD, wildlife biologist with the Division of Migratory Bird Management. 3. US Dept. of Interior Guidelines regarding Cell Tower Radiations and Impacts on Wildlife. 4. ‘Possible Effects of Electromagnetic Fields from Phone Masts on a Population of White Stork (Ciconia ciconia)’, A. Balmori, 2005. Dr Martin Blank, Professor in the School of Medicine, NY has conducted numerous laboratory studies concerning the stress effect of EMR/EMF on DNA proteins in cell tissue and has listed about 150 research articles pertaining to the topics of ELF-EMF stress effects on cells. Dr Blank noted that the stress response has been demonstrated in many cells and linked to changes in our DNA and chromosomes. The study on white stork populations nesting on/ near phone towers showed that 40% of the nests within 200 metres of antennas had no chicks, while only 3.3% of nests further than 300 metres of antennas had no chicks. There are also studies on other birds using towers for nests showing fertility declines and non-hatching of chicks. Panagopoulos & Margaritas (2008) concluded that large decreases in reproductive capacity were being caused by EM radiation fields near towers. All in all, a warning to us regarding microwave towers. As for NBN broadband speeds, many NBN towers are not performing as promised. Reports from elsewhere in the country show speeds of near 8/12 Mbps are obtained rather than the promised 25 Mbps which is hardly any different from ADSL2. Richard Giles Conondale

Broader view
Thank you to Richard Giles for his letter (GC&M News September 28) regarding increased cancer rates in children. This is something that should be a concern for any caring person. It is also important to take a broader view of the issue. With this in mind I would like to provide readers with the U.K.Telegraph article link that Richard has most likely used to provide his comments (if you haven't done so already). It is quite comprehensive as a general overview. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/2016/09/03/ modern-life-is-killing-our-children-cancer-rate-inyoung-people/ Peter Gawith Peachester
Everything not ok with EMF/EMR
In Mr Muller's letter (GC&M News September 28) the first thing to note is he didn't chase up the paper I quoted nor did he seem to read any of the 35 science papers referred to there. If he had, he'd write differently. He could be suffering from the condition of not being up with the newer science research or is simply not seeking it out. Holding to a belief that everything is OK with EMF/EMR does hold you back somewhat. I won't quote all the web addresses as it takes too much space. So start with: 1. OCTOBER 12 2016
What an insightful observation penned by our local Beerwah State High School chappy, Mike Turner (Churches column September 28) in his piece, ‘Are we humans or computers?’ Customer Service, as we once knew it, is now no more when these vital one-on-one human interactions are rapidly being replaced by machines - at supermarkets, airports, petrol stations, banks (and online shopping) - all in the name of convenience. The link with the rise in mental illness and family breakdown, I thought, was also a valid one. The younger generation of today has been touted as way less compassionate and way more selfabsorbed and self-focused, compared with the generation before them. With this new adolescent cohort being dubbed ‘screenagers’ we can well understand why! ‘Guilty as charged!’ in my opinion - after all who brought on the ‘selfie’ popular photo/video craze? The antidote for all this must surely be more human interaction, not less! I, for one, always choose to go through the checkout line at the supermarket with a person as opposed to the self-checkout and will always, always, always choose to speak to a real live person over the phone to do my business (even if they're in the Philippines - or India!) in preference to sending an email or (countless!) text messages! As human beings, we need each other. And as the virtual (digital) world enshrouds and seeks to emulate our intimacy and personal relationships, we can't then be surprised when we're stuck with this big empty, lonely feeling inside. We can ‘like’ our friend's new hair style but we're stuck for words when their grandmother dies.
We may have more than 250 ‘friends’ on Facebook, but who really knows us? (and who really cares?) Lynda M Utting Beerwah
Closing Suncorp
There is, unfortunately no vaccine against stupidity, and the stupidest event in the coming weeks is the closure of the Beerwah branch of the Suncorp bank and the removal of the ATM. No doubt many customers will be changing their banks. The Commonwealth, ANZ and Westpac banks will be rubbing their hands in glee. The population of Glasshouse Country is growing rapidly and Beerwah has been designated a ‘growth centre’ by the Queensland Government. My first thoughts were, I bet that they have a new CEO. I was right. Closing branches and sacking employees seems to be a popular move with newly appointed CEOs. It improves the bottom line (for the shareholders) and the possibility of an increase in the already obscene salary of the CEO. The closure is surely not for lack of patronage. I have seldom found the bank devoid of customers. Suncorp has come a long way from its beginnings as the State Government Insurance Office, a valuable institution serving the public of Queensland. It is sad to see that it is emulating the other shareholder focused big banks. Customers are an inconvenience. Let’s hope it doesn’t get as money hungry as the ‘which bank’, the bank which we the people once owned. The bank that children learned the art of saving with the bank’s ‘iconic’ money box. I dream of course. Banks used to be safe places in which customers could deposit their savings and to invest in shares. Neither customers or shareholders expected big interest or dividends, but your money was safe. Now it is all about the shareholder’s dividends and the CEO and Directors salaries. Employees have become just economic units to be discarded when no longer wanted and small customers are an inconvenience. Now we see the banks making record profits year on year, (there has been a temporary blip at present) while businesses and the economy continue to struggle. This situation seems cockeyed to me, but is possibly due to banks rapacious and sometimes unconscionable behaviour. As far as the present situation in Beerwah is concerned, one can only hope that a peoplefriendly bank or credit union will fill the gap. E C Prickett Peachester
Say no to ageism
Probus Clubs in the Sunshine Coast region are proud of the fact that they have actively responded to this year’s theme for International Day of Older Persons ‘Take a Stand against Ageism’. The Combined Probus Club of Glasshouse Mountains, is urging the community to resist ageism - the conventional view that older people are past the age of contributing to our society, or are too old to lead full and satisfying lives. A quick visit to a Probus Club meeting or lunch, would soon disabuse you of this stereotype. You would see active and intelligent people happily engaged in the work of the Club, and gain a wider view of the contributions that older people make to society. “Something like one in every six Queenslanders www.gcnews.com.au
are over 65-years-old, and in a fast ageing world this can be expected to increase. Older people will play a critical and positive role, not only in supporting their own families by undertaking caring responsibilities for grandchildren and parents, but also increasing their active participation in their local communities. Throughout Queensland we have 11,000 members in a network of 147 Probus Clubs. They enjoy regular opportunities to develop and maintain healthy minds and active bodies through social interaction and activities to expand their own range of interests, and to enjoy the fellowship of new friends. Probus is an association for active members of the community who are no longer working full time, to join together in clubs for enjoyment and fun in sharing their retirement with like-minded people. We welcome the opportunity to share our experience and knowledge, give our members the opportunity to develop new interests and stay active. We listen to all kinds of interesting guest speakers at club meetings on a wide variety of topics, and join in activities you may never have considered before. In short, Probus is all about fostering the wellbeing and involvement of older people in their community. Thus we are combating ageism in the best way possible. For further information, contact our Membership Officer Mr Gordon McCormack on 5439 0446 or attend as a visitor to our monthly meeting which is held on the second Wednesday of the month at 10.00am at the Beerwah Community Hall (next to the Beerwah Library). Tackling environmental issues
In response to Greg Newton (GC&M News September 28 edition) I would like to comment on some of his assertions in response to my letter from the previous week. a) The sensible proposed reforms to reduce land clearing were driven by the state Labor Government and had nothing to do with the Greens. b) His claims that the LNP policies reduced overall land clearing by 30% are not true. Since the LNP Newman Government gutted habitat protection laws in Qld in 2013, there has been a massive spike in land clearing rates. Figures from the DNRM Qld reports that in 20132014 alone almost 300,00 hectares was cleared. Prior to the LNP Newman Government, clearing rates 2007 to 2011 were around 100,000 hectares annually - an increase of 200%. c) Regarding agricultural output, there are annual variations in farm productivity, but these are due to a range of weather conditions and international trade factors. There is no correlation between land clearing controls and the value of crop and livestock output in Qld. (ref: ABS 2001 to 2014) Further, if we are to have long term sustainable farming in Qld then we need native vegetation. It controls erosion by protecting soils and riverbanks thereby reducing land degradation and salinity. It also provides habitat for a wealth of unique biodiversity including threatened species. I agree with Olive Hockings that a reasonable approach is needed lest we find our farmers are becoming an extinct species. I would also suggest that unless we tackle this issue, one of many amongst many others relating to our environment, we as a human race are in danger of becoming an extinct species. The sun is our future
Mr Woodlands comments (Things to Come October 5 edition) appears to link several isolated weather events to views espoused in a book by David Archibald. He was trained by Exxon Oil as a geologist, preaches nuclear as the panacea to end all global energy problems, supports fracking as a defence against an oil poor future, and considers fossil fuels as the future of energy. In short, not only is Mr Archibald a fossil fuel advocate, he also denies global warming despite proven and reliable records that show that planet Earth is warming at an alarming rate, mainly as a result of anthropogenic activities associated with the burning of fossil fuels. Mr Archibald writes that when ‘thorium salt water nuclear reactors’, a mothballed technology, are built (at exorbitant cost, I might add), then someday in the far future, nuclear power will produce energy for three cents a kilowatt hour. In August 2016, the cost of solar power was set at 2.91cents/KW in Chile at an energy auction. This figure will inevitably reduce as solar, wind and battery technology costs continue to reduce. Why? We have a very nice working nuclear fusion reactor at the safe distance of 150 million km, thank you very much, which delivers a continuous 174 petawatts of energy to Earth freeof-charge. It has sufficient fuel to continue operation for several billion years and its rate of fuel consumption is completely unaffected by anything we do with the delivered energy at this end. In short, the Sun is our future. Mr Woodlands is correct about future extreme weather, but, it is global warming from the continued use of fossil fuels that is the cause, not global cooling. As good world citizens, it is time to clean up over 200 years of pollution using 21st Century renewable energy. Ken Dyer Landsborough

Bloody bewdie Brownie
Your super but short stint as Editor was as refreshing as drops of rain upon a drought stricken plain. What a bonza idea your Page Three is, I know, I know, some may have misinterpreted it, but as we, the misunderstood males are aware your only intention was to promote the wonderful women of our community. Such as Sue, of Pasta d’Vine, Judy and Karen of All Energy HQ, the ladies who work in our medical and shopping centres, Acupuncturist
Bernadette of the magical healing, maybe a page three for Lea, for these ladies are indeed the backbone of our community. I am presently writing of our pioneering women and realise how few accolades are awarded to their contribution to our society. We will wait with bated breath for your next stint in the Driver’s seat Brownie and hopefully the fruition of your Page 3 girl concept. The Poddydodger Peachester Editor’s note Well Mr Poddydodger – thank you for reinterpreting the ‘Page 3 girl concept’ for us into something more palatable in these contemporary times. And you are definitely correct, we have lots of great women in our community so there is no need to limit their stories to just one page! Cheers Lea
Non compliance
I have recently been contacted by a local resident concerning the problem of wheelchairs sliding sideways while travelling on a bus as they go around corners. He said while it was law that busses should be wheelchair compliant, this was not always the case. If anyone has any additional information, advice or complaints about this problem, please ring me 5494 0951 so I can pass on the information needed. Some good news
Last week when I went into Suncorp in Beerwah, I spoke to one of the tellers and they advised that Suncorp is putting in an ATM beside Target, at the Beerwah Marketplace and it will be installed in the coming few weeks. Also I was told that if anyone who is with Suncorp wishes to make a deposit, they can do so at the Post Office. Sylvia Rice Landsborough
Money into local economy
Thank you for including the article about Australasian Touring Caravan, Motorhome and Camping Club (ATCMCC), caravan rally in the September 7 edition. Our rally commenced on the September 20 for nine days and during the rally period our members from Northern and Southern Queensland, NSW and Vic, were heavily involved in three organised tours and they enjoyed the number of the sporting activities that were planned during the rally. Many of our members made their first visit to the area and took the opportunity to visit the many scenic spots and towns around the area. The ATCMCC members spent the sum of $18,060.71 within the Hinterland area and our in-house charity raffles contributed $410.00 to the Motor Neurone Disease Qld and $110.00 to the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre. We have forwarded a letter to Sunshine Coast Council advising them what a club such as the ATCMCC spends within the selected area at each rally and hopefully the council and the tourist centre will take this in consideration to encourage more caravaners to visit their area and put some money back into the local economy. Communication with God
One of the great things about God is His ability to keep me interested. I look at the wonders of nature and I don’t question He made it all, but I just wish He would appear in front of me sometime and say, hi! I know the Bible says the heavens declare His glory etc, but still it would be nice to say hi, face to face. The Bible gives us some clues as to how God communicates with us; (1) By the things of nature (Psalm 19). (2) Revelation (Psalm 119:105): (3) His providence (Luke 12:22). (4) His Holy Spirit (Luke 14:26). As I read the Bible, sometimes I can’t help wondering what the story has to do with me? Then, it’s as if an inner voice tells me that the Bible is really a guide to life. Psalm 139 informs me He knew all about me before I was even born! Then, there’s the things He does for me. The financial gifts, the miracles of healing, the holes he’s got me out of, and the problems he has made go away. C
Then there’s the Holy Spirit. What can I say about Someone I can’t see? But, what can I say about Someone who knows just when to do something for me, or give me the right thought at the right time, or, perhaps even preserve me from harm? I still cannot see Him, but individually these might seem nothing, but together, they tell me He knows and cares about me. I know that when I open my eyes each morning and I give Him my heart before the day crowds Him out, I know He hears, and I feel safe. Faith is a strange experience sometimes; but it is always comforting. One of my favorite authors wrote: ‘Prayer is the opening up of the heart to God as my friend,’ and so… I pray. GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY

If you’re looking for some help to tame your lawn and garden, local family owned and operated business Joyce Mowing and Gardening are here to help. Daniel and Sally Joyce have built up a solid local clientele, and it’s their attention to detail, reliability and a strong work ethic which makes them stand out. “We really care about our customer’s gardens and lawns and get a sense of pride when our customers tell us how much they love our work and how good they feel when they have a tidy garden again. We don’t cut corners,” says Sally. “And we turn up when we say we are going to.” Covering all areas from Woodford through to Mooloolah and out to Maleny and surrounds and operating six days a week, Joyce Mowing and Gardening offer small and large block mowing and all gardening services including hedge trimming, garden clean-ups, weed removal, mulching, landscaping and gutter cleaning. “Our best tip for summer lawn growth is book-in early. We are generally booked up more than a week in advance over summer and would hate to say no to last minute call ups,” suggests Sally. Book in now with Joyce Mowing and Gardening for your Christmas tidy-ups.

Product innovation The team at Queensland Kitchen & Bathroom Distributors have been busy over the last few months perfecting a new and revolutionary product. They are manufacturing a lightweight composite 45mm stone benchtop in their Beerwah workshop. The benchtop consists of 6mm re-constituted stone over a light weight substrate. Using this method opens up huge options for future use. The possibilities for this product are endless, including a growing interest from the caravan industry, as well as double story or high-rise buildings with access issues and the additional benefit of reduced overall weight when installed. These benches can also be supplied to the cabinetmaking industry and installed by the cabinetmaker with the kitchen. This reduces the inconvenience to the client by not having to wait up to a fortnight for the stonemason to install solid stone benchtops after the kitchen cabinets are installed. The stone sheets come in 36 colours with a high gloss finish. The team are very excited to be able to offer this product at both retail and wholesale. Please call 5494 0522 to find out more, or visit their display rooms at Unit 1/5 Beerwah Parade.
Prepare your home for storm season RACQ is telling Queenslanders now is the time to Get Ready for storm season, urging them to be prepared for wild weather before it hits. RACQ’s Paul Turner said people needed to be safety conscious with both their homes and behaviour as RACQ Get Ready Week kicked off. “Queensland summer storms generally come and go quickly, but their affects can last for years – so people need to be across safety advice and take it seriously,” Mr Turner said. “There are some simple steps which will help safeguard lives and property when a weather event hits. “At home, make sure you’ve cleared the yard of debris, packed an emergency kit, have an evacuation plan and ensure your insurance is up-to-date and covers what you need most. Mr Turner said Queenslanders should tick off these safety checklist items: • Check home building and contents insurance • Clear gutters and downpipes, trim overgrown branches. Do not attempt to trim trees near powerlines • Check the roof for damaged or loose tiles and sheeting • Remove or secure loose items from the yard that could become projectiles • Join an Early Warning Alert service Have an emergency kit including a battery-operated radio, a reliable torch and spare batteries, canned food, can opener, water, a first-aid kit and blankets. For information on the RACQ Get Ready campaign: https:// getready.qld.gov.au.

Beat the mad rush of summer and service your garden equipment now! Now is a good time of year to consider servicing your garden machinery before the mad rush of summer. Make sure your mowers, brush cutters, blowers, and chainsaws are clean and fully serviced before you need them for the summer growing season. Did you know that it is not advisable to keep mixed 2 stroke fuel in your outdoor power machines for longer than two months? After limited use during the slower winter months, all machinery needs a look over, both for safety and to ensure they work when you need them. The fully qualified staff of Beerwah Small Engines are always more than happy to assist customers in regard to maintenance advice. Operating since 1977, the business has been owned and operated by the same local family for almost 40 years, providing customers with the security of dealing with an established local
business that is always happy to help with any general questions, as well as sourcing specialty items as needed. Quality personalised customer service is key with the store staffed by eight local employees. For convenience, a pickup and delivery service exists for ride on mowers and their sales team includes a qualified mechanic, to answer any technical queries. Beerwah Small Engines sell quality products including Stihl, Hustler, Greenfield and Masport that are built to last and can be serviced and maintained year after year. The business carries a large range of spare parts for the products they sell and their fully equipped workshop is always in demand for service and repairs. So beat the rush and head over to Beerwah Small engines to ensure your summer garden maintenance is stress free.

Don’t cry over Bindi-eye
Over the winter months, Bindi-eye will have been germinating and slowly growing in your lawns, and pretty soon, it will form the nasty little prickles that make you do the Bindi-eye dance in summer. Now’s the time to do something about them. If you have a small problem, you can easily hand pull them. If it’s a major infestation, you will have to fall back to using a herbicide. Don’t use a glyphosate (or a ‘roundup’) type product otherwise you’ll kill the grass and end up with a much bigger problem than you started with. Choose a ‘selective’ herbicide – i.e. one that kills broadleaf weeds but not your lawn. But choose one that’s right for your type of grass. If you’re not sure, take some of your grass down to the local hardware, produce or rural store and ask them there. Use a proper garden sprayer – not a watering can or a small household water sprayer. Note the mixing rate recommended on the label … using more doesn’t make it work better and can damage the lawn or be a risk to you, your pets or native wildlife. Spray a day after rains or after watering the grass. This way the Bindi-eye will be fresh and will readily absorb the herbicide. Don’t spray if it’s going to rain within four to six hours. Once they are dead, fertilise the lawn to strengthen the grass, which will in turn help keep the weeds at bay. And enjoy walking on the grass this summer.

Sport Glasshouse Hinterland AFL Club Contribution for Craig Bales The Glasshouse Hinterland AFC recently held their Junior presentation day were we celebrated the great year all players had at the club. A special mention to Leila Josey who coached our Under 8’s Team this year. She won the AFLSJC ‘Female Coach of the Year’ as well as the Glasshouse Hinterland’s ‘Volunteer of the Year’ award. Congratulations to Anne-Liese Atkinson for winning the ‘Club Person of the Year’. The effort she put in behind the scene was fantastic. The great work that all our volunteers put into the club is what makes it a success, so we would like to thank all the helpers throughout the year! The Club would like to thank Rod from TFM Awards (formerly Frame D’Art) for the fantastic plaques and trophies, as you can see from the photo, the kids love them. The club would also like to recognise our Sponsors, as without their assistance, we would not be able to provide a wonderful environment www.gcnews.com.au

The Beerwah Women’s team was one of only three ‘A’ ranked teams in the 15 team South East Queensland Women’s rugby league competition and boasts a number of international and state players. Representing the Sunshine Coast, the team has won the Central Division Women’s championship for the past four seasons. Due to the team’s success over the past five seasons, Beerwah Bulldogs are proposing to field a second women’s team in 2017. The second team may play in a local competition due to increased interest in the women’s game or in a Division 2 competition across South-east Queensland. Contributed by Ian Hansen Tuesday’s winners of the Triples game played by the six members present were Rema Godfrey, Miles Allen and Allan Cook with a score of +8. The Jackpot of $196.00 wasn’t won so will be in excess of $200.00 this week. Wednesday evening Twilight Bowls: winning teams were Apps Kingdom, Ben Bryce, Kracker Jacks and Amigos and Ezi Riders who had a drawn game. The Touchers went to Kerry Sherwell, Peter Harris and Heather Loynes. The raffle winners were Jimmy Davidson and Jim King. The lucky Money Board winner was David Burgess. This week there is Jackpot Pairs/Triples Tuesday, the Twilight Challenge Wednesday evening and the Scroungers Final Friday afternoon. There should also be a Fours Team travelling to Kilcoy on Wednesday. A reminder that the Scott Fawkes Memorial fixture is scheduled for Friday afternoon, October 21. Note the format has changed this year from Handicap Singles to Triples. There is a nomination sheet at the Club and the cost is $12.00 and the time is 6.00pm for 6.30pm start. Cost includes barbecue and bowls. Finally, to finish on a sad note, Carol Cook’s father, Walter Burnett, passed away on Friday aged 96. The Burnett family have been involved with the Maleny Bowls Club since its inception in 1937. Carol’s grandfather, Bill Burnett, was instrumental in the establishment of the Club in 1937. Her father, Walter, was both President of the Club and Singles Champion for a number of years. Carol’s uncle, Rixon Burnett, was also a Singles Champion and Carol is a present day Member. Sincerest sympathy To Carol, Allan and family on your sad loss on behalf of all Members of the Maleny Bowls Club.

Witta Tennis
Contributed by Pauline Fraley Witta Wagtails played Nambour Heights on Wednesday and lost by just four games. Thanks to team members Gerry, Christine, Janet and Jill Murtagh for filling in the last minute. The Wompoos travelled to Tewantin on Sunday to take on the competition leaders Tewantin Tigers. There were keenly fought tight sets throughout the day with the lead shifting back and forth. This match was by far the most competitive we've experienced this competition. After Sunday's match, the Tewantin team still remains the leader having defeated the Wompoos by seven sets to five sets. There is just one more match to determine who goes forward to play Tewantin in the finals. Wompoos are still in there with a good chance to make it. Witta Wikings hosted Ballinger Rockets on an overcast, windy and grey day. However, our tennis attire brightened up the day along with good banter and great play. With miraculous shots, enormous gasps and net cords in play, we were on tender hooks and tippy toes all day. However, with magpies on their side, the Rockets blasted off and stole the victory, leaving the Wikings to drown their sorrows and continue laughing. Well done Ballinger, a great day and enjoyed by all. Social tennis: Monday 8.00am and Saturday 1.00pm, all welcome. Court bookings phone 0437 295 501 or www.wittatennis.com.au

Just for Laughs Getting forgetful
There was an elderly couple who in their old age noticed that they were getting a lot more forgetful, so they decided to go to the doctor. The doctor told them that they should start writing things down so they don't forget. They went home and the old lady told her husband to get her a bowl of ice cream. "You might want to write it down," she said. The husband said, "No, I can remember that you want a bowl of ice cream." She then told her husband she wanted a bowl of ice cream with whipped cream. "Write it down," she told him, and again he said, "No, no, I can remember: you want a bowl of ice
cream with whipped cream." Then the old lady said she wants a bowl of ice cream with whipped cream and a cherry on top. "Write it down," she told her husband and again he said, "no, I got it. You want a bowl of ice cream with whipped cream and a cherry on top." So he goes to get the ice cream and spends an unusually long time in the kitchen, over 30 minutes. He comes out to his wife and hands her a plate of eggs and bacon. The old wife stares at the plate for a moment, then looks at her husband and asks, "where's the toast?" Sarah, Glass House Mountains
Your Stars with Edgar J. Winter - www.astroclairvoyant.com Week beginning 12/10/2016 LIBRA September 23 – October 22 It’s not hard to imagine that you are becoming quite the expert at balancing your personal and professional feelings on the job. The planets put you in touch with people who appeal to you, either romantically or in close friendship. Jupiter, being in your sign this week, may double up the charm you naturally ooze from every pore! SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 For some of you this is your birthday month, so you will be drawing others to you like the power in a magnet. Because the Moon is in your sign, authority figures you have been counting on, should come through for you. As they may have invested in you, do your best and rise to the occasion. You may need to compromise now. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 The planets this week favour secret probes and investigations. You may find yourself dealing with institutions or private organisations and that should be very productive. People are reliable and can be expected to give dependable support. Remember that friendship is a two way street so be ready to lend a hand when needed. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 Asking for an elder, parent, or authoritative figure for assistance has never come easily to you. However this is the week you need to grin and bear it! The good news is that they will be more than cooperative and quite willing to help. The thoughtful planet, Mercury, makes his way to bringing you sweet secrets and intimate feelings.
AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 As the mighty planet Jupiter entered partner pleasing sign of Libra, and in your ninth sector of long distance communication and travel, you thirst for new information. Any time in the next few months you may pursue a certificate course, various lectures, or take an overseas trip. There will be a lot of mixing business with pleasure now. PISCES February 20 – March 20 It’s best not to over react to someone who seems to be asking too many questions or nosing into your business. It is best to ask them why they are so interested. The depth of your feelings for someone becomes more obvious to you now, due to a situation calling for an emergency response. You enjoy delving into a new psychic project. ARIES March 21 – April 20 Well if you are in the Southern States you are in daylight savings time. Three planets take turns in passing through your relationship sector. So this is the week to be nice to your sweetheart, up early to get her/him a cup of tea, or if not attached, to be in the mood to cooperate and negotiate. Partners should be stable and reliable. TAURUS April 21 – May 22 This week the planets have settled, creating a perfect time to make a commitment, be it business or personal. Remember just play by the rules and your plans will move forward easily and go off without a hitch. True intimacy is on your mind with planets in your relationship sector, getting you ready to help and serve others.
GEMINI May 22 – June 21 This week could give you the start to a whole month of fun times with lovers and playmates! It would be wise to keep a good list to show up for the events throughout the month, so as to attend to all those invitations you will accept. Getting along with others will bring something surprising, yet satisfying results now. CANCER June 22 – July 22 This week there is a lot to do around the home and with family. Perhaps your physical home is due for an upgrade. There are also energies that may see a birth of a new family member. The Universe is sending Mercury along with a mission to convince a best friend of yours to assist you. Don’t be proud – ask for help! LEO July 23 – August 22 This week means cleaning out any closet long overdue. There is a lot to do with the sharing of information and ideas. This can be in your local environment with neighbours and community members. Probably you will also find your mobile phone and computer is awash with information. A new invention catches your eye. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 The emphasis for October seems to be showing your financial prowess, economic interests and earnings. You are connecting with kindred spirits for new friendships and there should be very little worries with Mercury and Jupiter being well balanced in the sign of Libra. The Moon may urge you to try your hand to investigate options.
