Hi Everyone... When I woke up on Saturday morning and looked outside there were plenty of grey clouds and I wondered whether the Anglican Church Spring Fete at Maleny would still be on. A quick check on Facebook at 8am confirmed it was definitely kicking off at 9am. When we arrived I noticed a number of the volunteers behind the stalls were wearing rain ponchos, so I figured a few spits of rain wasn’t going to stop the big event going ahead. Fortunately in the hour or so we were there the rain held off and the lovely ladies that we photographed for our ‘Out and About’ section on page 24 were happy to remove their wet weather gear for the photos. There was a great turnout for the day, with plenty of interest in the traditional delights of a fete, the tasty baked goods, the second hand books and the plant stall in particular. Well … maybe they are a reflection of mine and Brownie's areas of interest. I have to say that the homemade pumpkin scones were wonderful!

Local News Fastest communications to Asia The Sunshine Coast will offer Australia’s fastest telecommunications connection to Asia and second fastest to the United States thanks to a new international submarine cable contract that has been agreed between Sunshine Coast Council and RTI Connectivity Pty Ltd (RTI-C). The investment of up to $35 million in the undersea cable connection from the Sunshine Coast to the 9600km Japan-Guam-Australia South (JGA-S) cable, plus supporting land-based infrastructure, is being jointly funded by the Sunshine Coast Council and the Queensland Government. Minister for State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning Cameron Dick said the government was providing $15 million towards the project from the Jobs and Regional Growth Fund following a commitment made at the last election. Mayor Mark Jamieson said Sunshine Coast Council was the first local government in Australia to secure an investment in an international submarine cable and, in an increasingly digital world, the value of this investment for the region’s future could not be understated. The project includes a 550km undersea fibre optic cable from the Sunshine Coast to the JGA-S submarine cable, which is currently being delivered by a consortium involving RTI-C, Google and AARNet. At Guam, the JGA-S cable will connect to the SEAUS cable system, a highly efficient Trans-Pacific cable which will forge connections between SouthEast Asia and the United States for more than 1.5 billion people.

The project is forecast to deliver up to 864 new jobs and stimulate $927 million in new investment in Queensland, numbers Mayor Jamieson believes are conservative given our insatiable demand for data and that data traffic from Australia was increasing by at least 40% annually. Mayor Jamieson said the project will stimulate investment and jobs growth on the Sunshine Coast thanks to the superior telecommunications connectivity and data infrastructure and could serve to attract some of the world’s biggest data users to our region. “Our ratepayers will also benefit from the agreements we have reached with RTI-C because council will receive a revenue stream from customers accessing the JGA-S cable network through the Sunshine Coast cable connection. “Once again, our council is at the forefront of thinking outside the square, securing new revenue sources and pursuing opportunities to generate economic and employment growth as a major dividend for our residents, thus ensuring we continue to be Australia’s healthy, smart, creative region,” Mayor Jamieson said. The submarine cable, to be supplied and installed by Alcatel Submarine Network, is expected to be completed by the first half of 2020.

Westpac Beerwah to close The Beerwah Westpac branch is the latest casualty in the long line of bank closures locals have had to endure in recent years. Following the closures of Suncorp branches in Beerwah and Maleny, and ANZ in Maleny, the Westpac branch in the Beerwah Shopping Village is set to shut up shop on November 23. Westpac has notified its Beerwah customers that they can continue to bank with Westpac – they just have to do it at Caloundra. Pam Mitchell wrote to Westpac via the bank’s Facebook page, summing up what a lot of local customers will be feeling. “Dear Westpac, thank you for your correspondence advising that your Beerwah branch is closing and my business will be transferred to your Caloundra Branch. Just two small problems, your Caloundra Branch is over an hour return trip and when I was in your Caloundra Branch a few weeks ago I was one of half a dozen people seeking service in a branch with not one staff member in sight. When your staff member eventually turned up she was surly and snippy, not an experience I would care to repeat. A sharp contrast to the very helpful staff at Beerwah. Just saying … I understand you won't change your decision, just wanted to share a customer perspective with you. A wall of selfservice machines does not a branch make.... “ The Finance Sector Union (FSU) said the closure was the latest in a round of closures by Westpac.
“Westpac has announced plans to permanently shut the doors on another three branches across its retail network, axing 13 more jobs,” an FSU spokesperson said. “This latest announcement by Westpac comes hot on the heels of the announcement in July to close 11 branches from across its retail network. “We know a number of groups in the community, including the elderly and business sector, value the branches and they are likely to see these closures as a short-sighted decision that will harm the local area.” The closure leaves ANZ, Commonwealth Bank and Bank of Queensland as the last three standing in Beerwah, with Maleny serviced by Maleny Credit Union and Bank of Queensland.

Positive future for Maleny Credit Union Meeting regulatory hurdles imposed on modern banking institutions through the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) has taken Maleny Credit Union (MCU) down a number of twisting paths in recent years in order to remain viable and keep its doors open. In 2016, MCU identified an option of working with Bendigo and Adelaide Bank with a view to joining its Alliance Bank model as a way to continue to meet the stringent APRA regulatory obligations. However, when management and the MCU Board further investigated this option it became apparent that the Alliance Bank model would ultimately not have been to the best advantage of MCU customers and to the Maleny community as whole. As a result, last week MCU pulled out of negotiations with Bendigo and Adelaide Bank, placing the credit union in a precarious position. However, an opportunity has presented that will save the Maleny Credit Union as well as provide significant ongoing benefits to current MCU customers, the Maleny business community and community organisations that financially benefit from the MCU Charitable Trust. This option involves the acquisition of the MCU by Firstmac, a Brisbane-based company which is Australia’s largest non-bank lender. “The Maleny Credit Union Board of Directors is pleased to announce we have negotiated
a favourable proposal which, if approved by members, will enable the significant value built up in MCU over its proud 34-year history to be realised for members and our community,” MCU Board chair Sarah Davies said. “This acquisition is a realisation of the value built up in the MCU. We have negotiated an excellent market value, with Firstmac agreeing to pay $7 million for the business,” she said. “The Firstmac investment in the credit union will guarantee the continuity of a high-street independent banking presence in Maleny; will provide certainty for the current staff; will expand the range of banking and finance services for customers and the business community; and will enhance the work done within the community through the charitable trust. “The Firstmac group positions itself as a non-bank lender that has built its reputation by providing services to ‘mum and dad’ home buyers. “They understand the importance of contributing to the Maleny community and providing a genuine and ethical alternative to the big four banks — they will make a significant, long-term commitment to our community,” Ms Davies said. Based in Brisbane, the Firstmac group of companies is owned by Queensland’s Cannon family. The company is a large employer and will celebrate its 40th anniversary of business operations next year.
The negotiated offer includes: • $2 million to be paid to the MCU Charitable Trust, plus at least an additional $30,000 to the Trust annually, based on branch profitability • About $1 million to be used to pay back capital to MCU member investment share owners • About $4 million to be available to distribute to MCU members, meaning each will receive a payment of about $1,200 once the transaction is approved All MCU members have been sent information about the proposed acquisition, with the board promising regular correspondence will continue. For the Firstmac $7 million investment to proceed, a member ballot must be conducted, with at least 25% member participation and, of that, 75% to vote ‘yes’ for the deal to go ahead. Maleny Commerce vice-president Spencer Shaw said it was with “a degree of sadness that we hear of the passing of the Maleny and district Credit Union in its current form - our very own local bank”. “However, over the last few decades an increasingly restrictive operating environment has led to the demise of many small financial institutions and our own MCU is the latest,” Mr Spencer said. “Hopefully the deal negotiated by the MCU board will enable it to it to continue as a financial institution with the same focus on local services and benefits,” he said.

Leaders learn from Maleny agri-excellence Young agricultural industry leaders from all over Africa spent last week studying how and why Maleny Dairies has become such an iconic agribusiness success. The group of 28 are in Queensland as participants in the Australia Awards - Africa development assistance initiative. The Australia Awards, a Federal Government foreign assistance program administered by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, provide prestigious international scholarships and fellowships so the next generation of global leaders have an opportunity to undertake study, research and professional development in Australia. This equips the recipients with the skills and knowledge to drive change and contribute to the economic and social development of their own countries. The African contingent visiting the rolling green hills of Maleny are all leaders and emerging leaders in agribusiness from their respective countries, and have been working with the University of Queensland (UQ) during their six weeks of intensive study and professional development. Professor Ray Collins, one of the UQ academics working with the group, said Maleny Dairies was chosen as an outstanding example of a small agribusiness working at a local level to overcome larger market forces and establish a successful niche business. “Using Maleny Dairies as a case study, we’re looking at the supply chain from farm producer to the processor (Maleny Dairies), the retailer and
Maleny Dairies tour guide Abigail Brodie (second from right) with UQ staff Ray Collins and Tony Dunne and the group of Australia Award participants from Africa at Maleny Dairies the end user – the consumer,” he said. Starting with the end users, the group ran a number of focus groups of milk consumers in Maleny and learnt about their milk buying habits and preferences, and how they saw Maleny Dairies as being different from other milk producers. The participants then scrutinised and contrasted the approach of the major retailers (Woolworths and Coles) as opposed to that taken by Maleny Supa IGA and how they work with Maleny Dairies to market their locally produced products. A tour through the Maleny Dairies plant gave the group first-hand exposure to a small dairy processing operation, ending with a meeting with Ross Hopper, owner of Maleny Dairies. They ended the field trip component by visiting Cork’s dairy farm, where they could investigate how the close working relationship between farmer and processor can significantly benefit both parties.

Petition for better planning laws A groundswell of community disquiet about the current state of planning and development is boiling to a head across South East Queensland. Earlier this year, a coalition of groups decided to take a stand against planning laws that they consider favour developers’ interests over residents’ quality of life. Community representatives from Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Redlands formed the South East Queensland Alliance (SEQA) in early 2018 to act on community concerns about poor planning and development decisions. The Sunshine Coast is represented by OSCAR (Organisation Sunshine Coast Association of Residents). SEQA spokesperson Lois Levy said recent changes to laws facilitating development (the Planning Act 2017) were designed primarily to suit the property development industry instead of ensuring residents’ amenity and quality of life. “Thousands of South East Queensland residents suffer daily from inadequate infrastructure, traffic congestion and other impacts of poorly planned developments in their local neighbourhoods,” Ms Levy said. “Better planning laws would protect residents’ quality of life, guarantee retention of heritage and neighbourhood character, and better protect wildlife. “The pendulum has swung too far from prescriptive planning, which the community could

As part of its campaign, SEQA has established a parliamentary petition calling on Queensland politicians to protect the interests of their constituents over developers by imposing clearer limits on what development is allowed; making most developments subject to genuine public scrutiny and objection; and requiring full transparency of council and government decisions. The petition will run for six months to allow plenty of time for community discussion about the need for better development controls in Queensland. David Coultis
Long serving police officer retires By Sonia Clark After an incredible 44 years of service to the Hinterland and Sunshine Coast community as a police officer David Coultis recently retired. David’s career started at the age of 15 followed by many years serving at local stations around the Coast including Maleny, Caloundra and Landsborough. His last six years were at the Maroochydore station. David is one of only a handful of Queensland Police Service officers to achieve this longevity of service as changes to the admission process no longer allow recruits under the age of 18 years. Over the years David has seen first-hand the transformation and evolution of the Hinterland communities, saying he has seen enormous changes to the dynamics of the local areas. Policing has also changed over the years, but one aspect that didn’t change was David’s commitment to his job, his community involvement and the genuine enjoyment he has gained being part of the local communities. David says he has met some terrific people over the years and that one of the best parts of his job was the work he did helping members of the community. He enjoyed the personal aspect of helping people find solutions to everyday issues and says that his career goal had always been to be a country policeman. “When I first came to the area we had dirt roads everywhere and the communication could be a bit shabby - there were a lot of dead spots where you would go out by yourself to deal with a job and not be able to be contacted at all, but that’s
all changed now,” David says. Joining the Queensland Police in 1974, David started his three-year cadet training as a 15 year old at the Police Academy at Oxley. In those days young recruits were able to incorporate their senior school education as part of their cadetship. Following his cadetship, David did his early training around the north side of Brisbane followed by time working at David at his clapping-out ceremony shaking hands with the Maroochydore Officer in Charge, Senior Sergeant Gavin Marsh Stanthorpe and Myles. In 1984 he moved to the response groups throughout the region, including Sunshine Coast where he joined the Maleny Police the rural fire brigade and State Emergency Service station for the next 10 years – doubling the police crews. presence from what was originally a one-man station. David then spent time at the Caloundra “There seems to be a great respect for what the station before returning to the Hinterland in the police do within our local communities. Community News It’s not over till the soprano dies By Judith Ross-Smith Billed as a show for opera lovers, opera haters and the opera curious, Death by Soprano will be staged at Maleny Community Centre at 2pm Sunday, September 16, as the final production in the Maleny Winter Theatre Festival. Maleny Arts Council president Professor Peter Lavery described Death by Soprano as “escapist” and a piece that will educate those who want to know more about opera and its conventions. “It is high art with a fun sensibility that doesn’t take itself seriously, so those who already love opera and accept the convention that ‘the soprano always dies’, will get all the hilarious slapstick,” Peter said. “And those who think grand opera a bit of a self-indulgence will be able to laugh at what is a higher death toll than a Hollywood blockbuster.” The soprano who performs these feats of operatic demise with outlandish props and
costumes and an impressive voice is Isabel Hertaeg, a cabaret artist of international esteem, whose voice and performing skills have been described by critics as “gutsy and likeable” and “radical, transgressive chic”. Isabel has worked in theatre, opera, independent film, community radio and television. Her cabaret work La Petite Mort has wowed audiences at two successful Edinburgh festivals and seasons across Australia. It was listed as one of the top three shows at the Adelaide festival and in Melbourne. The Age newspaper critic praised it as “…a truly original, delightful, accomplished show”. As usual, the audience is invited on to The Deck for refreshments, discussion of the show and to meet Isabel and her production team. Bookings for Death by Soprano can be made through the Maleny Arts Council website www. malenyartscouncil.com or at the Maleny Visitors Centre. Prices are $30, $25 for members and $15 for students. Concession prices of $25 are available for bookings of six. For this offer, please ring the president, Peter, on 0467 887 979.

Many thanks must go to Ashley Holznagel and his family for their persistence, enthusiasm and hours of work to make this happen. Brett Ambrose from Ambrose Construction donated concrete and labourers, Andy Manuel from Go Green Landscapes donated topsoil and Glenview Turf donated turf. The pitch has been built professionally to match Australian cricket pitch dimensions and standards. To celebrate this lovely new asset to the Peachester community, kids of all ages, along with mums and dads, came together on Father’s Day afternoon to christen the pitch with a fun afternoon of ‘nick and run’ cricket. The smiles on the children’s faces made it all worthwhile. The Peachester Sportsground is located on Peachester Road. After crossing the Stanley River heading towards Kilcoy you will find it on the righthand side of the road. Please use and enjoy it.
Libraries at your doorstep
Sunshine Coast Libraries supports all community members to have access to library books, resources and services. If you are unable to visit one of the library branches or mobile libraries, there is a free home library service available to people with illness, disability or limited mobility. Sunshine Coast Community Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said the home library service was a great way of making sure the whole community could benefit from our libraries.

“It also has great social benefits as each borrower is connected with a volunteer,” Cr McKay said. “The volunteers choose, deliver and return books and other library items to the borrower, based on their requests and preferences. “The home library service brings the benefits of the library into people’s homes whilst also enhancing community participation and connections for volunteers and borrowers.” To find out more about the home library service phone 5475 8989 or visit the library website.

School students convince Lions Contributed by Judy Brodie The Lions Club of Maleny Blackall Range recently challenged school students on the range to learn persuasive speaking and present a three minute prepared speech to judges and a school audience in their inaugural competition of ‘Convince us’. Primary school students split into two age groups - years 3-4 and years 5-6 - for the competition. Mentoring was offered, which benefited students in the preparation and delivery of their speech. This year’s topic “My favourite pet” provided judges Ron and Mary Hilton from Maleny Players with some entertaining speeches as students did their best to convince them that their pet was best. Dogs, cats, horses, a lizard, guinea pigs and animals in the wild provided students with abundant scope to present entertaining speeches. Penny Millwood from Conondale State School was the overall winner, speaking about her budgie.
Speakers were challenged again after the prepared speeches to select a topic from several provided to speak for one minute. These short preparation speeches were a great hit, and most students accepted the challenge. The overall winner of this section was William McCallum from Maleny State School. High school students took part in a series of workshops during lunch time, learning the finer points of persuasive speech preparation and its delivery. This provided some thoughtful, humorous and well-prepared speeches on a range of topics. Assistance from primary teachers Jan Gray from Conondale, Brent Heiniger from Maleny and Annie Willich from the Ananda Marga River School was appreciated by the Lions Club organisers, as was the instruction given by Peta Fredericks at Maleny High based on their curriculum, with voice projection coaching from Ron Hilton.

Games children played in Grandma’s day
Creative and generous
Before the days of virtual games and smart phones children mostly played outdoors. Games such as skipping rope, hopscotch, walking on jam tin stilts and throwing quoits were popular, often played in someone’s backyard or out in the street. Highly competitive egg and spoon races, three-legged races and sack races often formed part of school sports days, accompanied by much shrieking, laughter and cheering. The Friends of Bankfoot House will feature some of these games at the 150th anniversary celebrations at Bankfoot House on October 14. Skipping is not just jumping over a turning rope. Remember double Dutch? Two children hold the ends of two long ropes and turn them simultaneously in opposite directions. As the ropes twirl, one or two skippers jump over both ropes. A chant or rhyme helped everyone keep the beat, such as, “wash the dishes, dry the dishes, turn the dishes over”. In the 1930s during the Great Depression skipping was popular because the game needed only a used clothesline to be played. Humans have been skipping for centuries. It’s believed the ancient Phoenicians, Chinese and Egyptians skipped. Nowadays there are hundreds of jump rope competitions worldwide. Quoits is a game in which metal, rope or rubber rings are thrown a set distance to land over a spike. It too has been played for many years, including in Roman-occupied Britain in the first to fifth centuries AD. Later, peasants in medieval Britain heated and bent horseshoes into rings and tossed them at iron pegs driven into the ground. You are invited to try your skills at these games at Bankfoot House, 1998 Old Gympie Road, Glass House Mountains on October 14. For more information please ring Ron on 0407 760 989.
The Maleny Arts and Crafts are not just a creative and talented bunch, they are also generous in sharing their work and have been assisting farming families through donations to the Downs and West Community Support (DWCS) organisation for a number of years. The group’s president Anita Turner is proud that members of the group along with family and friends donate handmade items, such as quilts, clothing (including knitted baby and children items) and toys, as well as money raised from the sale of items donated directly to this wonderful community organisation. “In late October and early November we collect items that would be suitable for Christmas presents for farming families,” Anita said. DWCS has offered encouragement and pastoral and practical support to individuals and families of the Downs, the Lockyer Valley, the Burnett and south-west Queensland for the past ten years. “It is hoped that Sister Christine, who travels around and distributes the items that are donated, will be at the Maleny Catholic Ladies annual fashion parade on September 14,” Anita said. To find out more or to help support the work of the DWCS go to the Facebook page or website www.downsandwestcommunitysupport.org.

Neville Field - artist
The work of local Glass House Mountains artist Neville Field is featured in a new self-titled exhibition ‘Neville Field – Artist’, currently on display at Vianta, 70 Simpson Street, Beerwah. Neville’s art is exhibited nationally and internationally and this current exhibition runs from February 25 until April 29 with an opening night event scheduled for this Friday, March 2, at 6.30pm. ‘Neville Field – Artist’ will show examples of all of Neville’s techniques and feature his wide range of subject matter. His preferred art medium is printmaking in its various forms however his work can utilise a range of media – choosing that which seems appropriate at the time. His artwork includes printmaking, painting, drawing, and mixed media. Neville says: “My art is a continuous exploration of the world around me. In nature I find an interesting and complex hierarchy of growth, death and decay with the dominant exploiting the weak; a bit like business and politics! Colour can be both exciting and expressive while shape and form may not immediately be obvious. Hurriedly scratched marks, frantically chase my imagination as I search for answers to or else I just translate a feeling sparks of ideas, into an image.” He also paints and makes Artists’ Books. Neville studied a BA in Visual Art at UNENR in Lismore, NSW, before moving to Alice Springs for 15 years. He was greatly where he lived influenced by Indigenous artists with and by the surrounding he worked desert studied a Masters in Printmaking which impacted his palette while he from SCU. He explains: “As the idea is developed, the choice of medium becomes apparent… It all starts with a drawing. Drawing for me is a means of toying with ideas. It allows me to imagine concepts and explore specks of and layouts, or trains of thought and the use of space relationships. notions The exhibition at Vianta will ” be ‘refreshed’ on the weekend 31-April 1 allowing purchased of March works to be collected if required. book a table at the opening To night contact Steve on 0431 730 275. Contributed by Gordon Reddek The Coochin Creek Bushland Group will hold its next monthly working bee on Tuesday, September 18 from 7.30-10.30am. This month we will be planting and extending the area planted by the Chinese students two months ago. All are welcome to join us. For those interested in weeds, the photo shows a weed called creeping inch (Callisia repens) found in many domestic gardens. It is very invasive and hard to get rid of once established. One effective, non-chemical way to combat it is to smother it. Cover the entire affected area with a thick layer of newspaper or cardboard and cover that with mulch. Black plastic sheeting can also be used. Leave it in place for months or as long as it takes. If paper or cardboard and mulch are used, you can develop the garden on top of it, preferably with native plants (which are not invasive). The Coochin Creek Bushland Group is part of the Sunshine Coast Nature Conservation Program. Participation is free and tea is provided during the working bee. Participants are advised to wear boots, a long-sleeved shirt, long pants and a sun hat and to carry a water bottle. All equipment required, including tick repellant, will be supplied. We will meet at the gate to Caralan Park, at the corner of Emma Place and Caralan Way in Beerwah. For more information please contact Gordon on 0406 638 544.
Creeping inch (Callisia repens) is easy to remove but always returns because of the fine roots left behind
Mooloolah River Waterwatch & Landcare Inc. Take a moment to listen When was the last time you took time out to just sit down and listen? In today’s frantic world there is constant background noise – cars, music and trains, just to name a few. It seems everywhere we go we are bombarded with noise. Most people value our wonderful bush areas for the conservation aspect and the important environmental refuges they provide, but we should also value them for our own peace of mind and good health. Lots of people love to go bush walking and picnicking but have you ever just sat and listened? The bush is talking to us constantly, but we don’t often hear it. Sitting still, you become part of the bush and you will see and hear things that you would otherwise miss. The whisper of the wind through the leaves, the buzz of bees harvesting in the canopy above and maybe the croak of a frog or two. The other day I took time out and settled down with a picnic blanket and camera in one of our many beautiful forests. Before long the busy little scrub wrens and pardalotes started chirruping and chattering all around me. Then the resident golden whistler came in for a closer inspection while performing his melodious song. What a joy to hear! The natural environment is important to all of us in many, many ways but make sure you take the time to enjoy these special places and listen.

You Said It Life is precious
Father Kevin Smith in his column in GC&M News, August 22, hit the nail on its head about the evil of abortion. An expecting mother should protect the unborn child, who needs and has the right of protection. Life is precious and the growth of the unborn, amazing and beautiful, should not be destroyed for inconvenience or the wrong sex. Peter Lee Glenview
Re Unions in schools
The claim of Deborah Yffer (GC&M News, August 22) that unions are legitimate institutions, I wish I could have her confidence in them. A couple of weeks ago, members of Queensland Parliament saw the Attorney General, Yvette D’Ath, trying to stop Opposition questions about the scandalous behaviour of CFMEU officials. The criticisms of union behaviour were coming from courts that are dealing with charges against law-breaking union representatives “who have over 120 convicted breaches of Australian workplace law”. MPs also heard Premier Palaszczuk defending her government’s right to accept donations and support from disreputable unions. Her acceptance of the unsavoury behaviour of union representatives is very concerning and her support of them is no reassurance that the school system could oversee their incursions into high schools. The union representatives’ bully boy tactics in workplaces has been widely reported and there is no way their uncivilised behaviour should be allowed in high schools. Olive Hockings Maleny

Jane Hyde (GC&M News, September 5) writes about the various activities in the Maleny Precinct. An auditorium could also be a useful addition, considering the success of the Poetry in the Park events. As mentioned, walkers are the most numerous users of the Precinct. Walkers use the existing tracks and need no infrastructure, although toilets may be a useful addition in the future. All the other activities need buildings and car parking. One or two of these activities probably don't need the open spaces of the Precinct and could be conducted anywhere in Maleny. However, with so much space available there should be room for everybody. An auditorium would not necessarily have to be built in the middle of the golf course. Ian Pollock, Witta
Dog lovers be responsible
We all love our dogs in the Glass House Mountains area and we all know if our dog is friendly or not, but there seems to be a growing number of owners who walk their dogs off leash, which can cause a variety of problems for others. The person walking towards you will not know if your dog is friendly, and if they have a dog themselves, will be on guard as they walk past. One lady saw a big dog off leash coming towards her and her little dog so she lifted him up, but the other dog climbed up her back to try to get at the little dog. How would the owner of the off leash dog know that the lady did not have osteoporosis? She could have been knocked down and the situation 20

could have turned nasty. Also, a friend of ours decided to go for a walk and looked up to see a dog barking and running towards him. He turned on his heel and as calmly as he could, and without looking at the dog, walked back the way he had come. He felt the dog sniffing at his legs. He now will not walk that way. Why was that dog even out of his yard? We also had a frightening incident that made me just freeze. Luckily the situation didn’t turn nasty and the owner yelled out that his dog was friendly and just wanted to play. However, I was still scared. With all these happenings here, I cannot walk my dog now, so not only does my dog miss out on her daily exercise, but we do too. Our dogs are off leash at home and there are specified dog areas here in Glass House where your dog can be off leash and run around. Please dog owners, be mindful of how others will react to you and your dog off leash. Kym Duguid Glass House Mountains
the Westpac Bank. This disappoints me because most times that I go into the branch there is a queue. Isn't it sad that as more and more banks leave our towns it makes it harder for us (the community) to have choice in how we get our own money. I know some people bank online and that is their choice. But the rest of the community doesn’t get a choice like self-service checkouts and payWave on eftpos cards. It is about time the people start taking back their voices and having choice in the day-to-day running of our own lives, not the option of those sitting in an office somewhere looking at it on paper. There are real humans behind each account number. I hope people take up the challenge to resist being pushed into things we can't come back from and support banks and businesses that are local and support local groups. Donna Turner Beerwah

Children a poor second
On Wednesday morning August 20 while riding over Black Mountain near Cooroy my motorcycle and I departed company. Although my injuries were not life-threatening, I was assessed on the spot by a paramedic then transported by ambulance to the casualty unit at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital. I am the first to complain about the misuse of my tax dollars, however I must give credit to the attention, care and respect shown to me as a 75-year-old gentleman (that’s how they referred to me) by the paramedic and the Cooroy ambulance crew. My time in casualty was an experience in itself. The attending doctors, nurses, orderlies, screening technicians and after-care personnel were very professional. What impressed me was that everyone’s demeanour and application to their duties was exceptional. I recall my ambulance driver calling in to see how I was faring when he made a later delivery to the casualty unit. I returned his greetings saying that I hoped we would not meet again, in a nice way of course. I was discharged later in the afternoon on a pair of crutches with an injured leg. My thanks to all involved from Queensland Health in my little escapade on that fateful day. Frank Rowell Mooloolah
I applaud the proactive strategy of the Sunshine Coast Council in supporting the development and installation of kangaroo deterrent technology at Sippy Downs. What a shame that the state government continues to resist installing flashing school lights at the Peachester State School. Apparently this relatively simple technique to help warn motorists and truck drivers in school hours of the difficult-to-see school on a dangerous bend on the Beerwah to Kilcoy road is not a priority. The duty of care to our children clearly comes a poor second. Pity.... Sandra Poole Peachester

I would like to send a thank you to the Sunshine Coast Council for the subsidised exercise program that All in One Fitness Centre at Beerwah has been running since February. The staff at All in One are warm and welcoming, and Andrea has turned exercise into enjoyment. Hinterland Kids Daniel is reaching high
Contributed by Kim Fillery, Principal Peachester State School works closely with our students to establish their learning goals and realise their potential. While every child is unique and special and we value each one equally, we would like to celebrate the successes of Daniel [Surname? Kelly?] in year 4. After realising his natural mathematical and musical ability (Daniel taught himself to read music in two weeks over the 2017 Christmas break), Daniel was IQ tested extensively by a series of rigid tests and qualified staff. In a whirlwind of measurements, in most areas Daniel tested as working above a year 11 level. Daniel has since qualified for Mensa, an organisation that provides support to gifted children and their parents through grants, links to resources, online forums and social media groups. In late July, Daniel visited Maleny State High School to look at the different ways they could support his learning. Since then, Daniel has now started
Approved soccer training for kids aged 18 months - 7 years studying senior year 11 maths B and C, STEAM and music at Maleny SHS, and is managing to keep up with and, in some cases, exceed his new peers. While his mother, Mary Kelly, reports his maths book looks like something out of Good Will Hunting, Daniel is really enjoying the new challenges. Thank you so much to our friends at Maleny SHS. We look forward to working closely with you to guide Daniel towards an amazing future. Reach for the stars Daniel.
Special visit to school Contributed by Debbie Roberts
Indigenous author and artist Gregg Dreise recently made a return visit to Beerburrum State School. Earlier in the year Gregg and the school’s students created our Indigenous mural. On his recent visit Gregg spoke to the students about bush tucker as depicted in the mural and showed the students various hunting, food gathering and fire making tools. He also taught the students an Indigenous hunting game that determines which children our ready to join the adults when they go hunting.

By Senior Constable Susan Lowndes Do you know what your children are doing online? With so many apps and games in use, it can be hard to keep track of who our children communicate with online. The office of the eSafety Commissioner has a very helpful website with information for all types of online activities. It includes a special area just for parents to help them ensure their children have a safe and enjoyable online experience. You can find it www.esafety.gov.au/education-resources/iparent. Many social media sites such as Facebook also have safety centres to help users understand how their data are viewed and accessed. If you use social media don’t just assume that the pre-set security settings are suitable for you or your child. Take the time during Child Protection Week to inform yourself. Assess your child’s online behaviour and talk to them about who they talking to.

Silkworm stories Nature provides an incredible wealth of wonder and learning opportunities for adults and children alike, and recently children and staff at Glasshouse Mountains Early Education Centre were thrilled to welcome hundreds of teeny tiny silkworms to the centre. Following the launch of the ‘Bush Kindy’ program, centre coordinator Dee McCaan and the team have been keen to further develop opportunities for the children and their families to experience naturebased learning and ‘green play’. Thanks to local resident Margaret Voigt who donated to the centre a magical shoebox filled with hundreds of tiny silkworms. Margaret kindly supplies local schools and child care centres with these captivating creatures free of charge to help share the wonder of the evolving life cycle of the silkworm. Opening the shoe box supplied by Margaret, the staff discovered hundreds of teeny tiny silkworms hungrily devouring some mulberry leaves. The staff excitedly placed them into a small tank for the children to see and the centre’s silkworm journey began. Dee says that this amazing donation has created great interest for the staff, children and families and has given everyone a wonderful learning experience. “The staff at Glasshouse Mountains Early Education Centre pride themselves on being able to provide the children with experiences that give them the opportunity to explore their environment, and being able to watch the silkworms grow and change is certainly providing that,” Dee says.
Of course, having so many silkworms meant that a seemingly endless supply of mulberry leaves was needed to keep them fed and healthy. A call out was sent to the wonderful families at the centre and within a couple of days they came through with ‘silkworm food’. These families are regularly bringing in bags of leaves that are fed to the silkworms by the children. “The silkworms have a voracious appetite and are growing at a ridiculous rate. We have set up a silkworm observation area with magnifying glasses so the children can closely study them. This area also has a lot of information about the life cycle of the silk moth and pictures of this cycle so the children can compare the different stages of maturity,” Dee says. This incredible opportunity has already provided a wealth of knowledge and interest for both staff members and the centre’s children and families. For example, did you know that the total life cycle of a silk moth ranges from 6-8 weeks and that the silk moth cannot fly even though it has four wings? The children have also learnt that over thousands of years silkworms have become domesticated through human interaction and now depend on man-made habitats to survive.
Committed to encouraging ‘green play’ over ‘screen play’ and promoting values of sustainability and environmental awareness, the centre will be extending its learning opportunities to include upcoming projects focussing on some interesting areas of engagement including how worm farms work, the life of guinea pigs and frogs, and how compost bins can help the environment by reducing waste and enriching soil. The centre would welcome more donations of mulberry leaves and is also on the lookout for larger fish or reptile tanks in which to transfer the growing silkworms before they begin to spin their cocoons. To find out more about the centre or for an obligation free tour, please call 5438 7311, or call in to 2 Page Street, Glass House Mountains (no appointment necessary).
Community callout Glass jars and bottles needed please. More mulberry leaves and a large fish/reptile tank.

Federal Member for Fisher Maleny sustainable beef
With parts of rural Queensland struggling under severe drought conditions, I recently announced a Federal Government grant for a project to train and support Maleny graziers in more sustainable farming practices. With this grant, Lake Baroon Catchment Care Group will help 30 local beef graziers to learn best practice techniques in soil, fertiliser, grazing and water management, as well as supporting them in implementing these techniques. We have fantastic graziers in Maleny and this grant will help ensure that when tough times come they have the skills and the knowledge to look after their properties in the best way possible.
Matthew Flinders Park
In June I joined with the State Member for Glass House Andrew Powell and Sunshine Coast Councillor Rick Baberowski to call for ideas for a new memorial to Matthew Flinders in the Hinterland. As local researcher Ivon Northage identified, the existing memorial park in Beerburrum will be cut in two by the duplication of the North Coast Rail. Thank you to everyone who has provided feedback so far. I wrote to Queensland State Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey in June to alert him to this issue and I am pleased to report that the Minister has now replied and acknowledged the significance of the park to local residents. He tells me that his department would welcome ideas from residents for a new memorial, so if you haven’t already I would encourage you to write to me with your thoughts so I can pass them on.
Come and meet me
I will be holding a Listening Post in Glass House Mountains on Saturday, September 22 at Settlers Rotary Park in Reed Street outside the Glasshouse Mountains Information Centre from 10-11am. So come along, give me your feedback and tell me more about the issues that matter to you.
#Photos of Fisher
I want to showcase our beautiful region on my Christmas card again this year. Last year the competition was won by Jacky Vonhoff of Maleny with her picture of the Glass House Mountains. This year I am keen to see as many entries from the Hinterland as possible. If you live in Fisher and have a great image of our region, then enter the competition by uploading the photo to Instagram with the hashtag #photosoffisher and the location it was taken, or by emailing it to andrew.wallace.mp@aph.gov.au with the subject line ‘Photos of Fisher’ before October 12. The winning image will go out to thousands of local households on the cover of my Christmas card, and will be printed on canvas and hung in my office at Parliament House. State Member for Glass House Gambling Community Benefit Fund success for Maleny
Round 96 of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund (GCBF) saw another $22,972 worth of grants awarded to the Glass House electorate in August. The gambling fund provides one-off grants to Queensland not-for-profit community organisations, with revenue sourced from gaming taxes. The fund distributes about $53 million per year to Queensland communities, which enables organisations to provide further resources or expand their services to the community. I’m thrilled for the recipients of this round of grants in Glass House. They were: • Maleny Community Centre Inc - $4,941 to buy choir risers • Maleny Swimming Club Inc - $18,031 to install a solar system and lighting, and to buy whitegoods I would like to congratulate these two groups on their success in this round and encourage organisations within Glass House to apply for funding in the next round. Information on how to apply for a GCBF grant is available at http:// www.justice.qld.gov.au/grants or by phoning 1800 633 619 during business hours.
Crime rates in the electorate
Recently I wrote to the Police Minister, Mark Ryan, regarding numerous complaints I have received concerning crime in the electorate. In particular, people from Beerburrum all the way to Mooloolah are concerned about theft, breakins, wilful damage and hooning. I do not in any way consider this to be due to poor policing from our local officers. I have the highest respect and gratitude for the work that our local officers undertake and the manner in which they undertake it. Instead, these issues are arising from an apparent lack of officers and vehicles. I hope to receive a response from the Minister shortly, so please keep an eye on my Facebook page for any updates on this matter.
Local Heroes grants round three winners
Round three of my Local Heroes awards was finalised towards the end of August. I’d like to encourage anyone who applied but did not win a grant to apply again in the next round. Unlike previous rounds, due to the number and calibre of applications received, I made the decision to award a total of six grants. The recipients were Woodford Show Society, Woodford Scouts, Mikaela Hewitt-Filian from Delaney’s Creek, Matthew Schilf of Eudlo and the Burnside Bandits volleyball team,Twin Cedars over 50s Lifestyle Village and the Kenilworth Arts Council. Each of these recipients have received $250, which will be put towards various funding goals, such as sporting goods, art projects, a defibrillator and travel costs for athletic competitions. Congratulations to the abovenamed recipients and I look forward to receiving many more applications for the next and final round for the year. glass.house@parliament.qld.gov.au www.andrewpowell.com.au Search us on Facebook Andrew Powell
What does a strong community mean to you?
As our region grows, Sunshine Coast Council is embarking on creating a new Social Strategy to 2041. The community is invited to help shape the future social direction for our region and also have a chance to win some amazing prizes. Mayor Mark Jamieson said council wanted to ensure that the Sunshine Coast remained one of the best places on Earth to live. “That’s why we are asking residents and visitors alike for your stories and views about what a strong community means to you,” Mayor Jamieson said. “In 2015 council adopted its first Social Strategy, which recognised our greatest social attribute is our people and the way they participate and get involved in community life. “It also set a vision that our community will continue to thrive and enjoy a lifestyle that sets us apart, and in all of our communities people are included, treated with respect and opportunities are available to all. “By working together we will ensure we build and support an even stronger Sunshine Coast community – living in what we hope will be Australia’s most sustainable region – healthy, smart and creative.” Community Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said the new Social Strategy would build on the successes of the past three years that came from the inaugural strategy. “The strength of our community affects all aspects of our life from health and wellbeing to connections with our local economy and environment,” Cr McKay said. “Our new Social Strategy is sure to touch all of us in some way and we’re keen to hear what the community thinks is important to them – what does a strong community entail?” Council will be reaching out to the community in several ways, including online, by hosting displays in Sunshine Coast Libraries, pop-ups at a range of events and locations, and facilitating community focus groups. By sharing your views, you can go in the draw to win one of three prizes, including a recreation mountain bike, tickets to the Sunshine Coast Stadium ‘Under the Southern Stars’ concert headlined by the Hoodoo Gurus, or a painting by Lyndon Davis, who is a local traditional owner (Kabi Kabi). Let council know what is important to you by visiting the council’s website and click on ‘have your say’, or to get involved head to one of the following Social Strategy pop-ups: • September 14 - Maleny Youth Festival, Maleny Neighbourhood Centre (from 3pm) • October 21 - Maleny Market, Maleny RSL Hall, Bunya Street, Maleny (from 8am)

Regular visits to the dentist pay off
Dr Nathan Abrahams from the Dental Centre at Maleny is very aware that many people avoid regular visits to the dentist because they think it will be too expensive or too painful. However, he is keen to assure people that both of these situations are totally avoidable. Dr Abrahams said if you only visit the dentist when you have pain or a large hole in your tooth you will end up paying more for the complex treatment required to save it, or worse, paying to have it extracted. “However, if you attend the dentist regularly issues can be detected early and fixed more easily and usually at less cost,” he said. A dentist may also save your life, as they can detect many serious illnesses such as anaemia, jaundice, sepsis, thyroid issues, acid reflux and everyone’s nemesis, cancer. Caught early, all these conditions are more easily treated and, let’s face it, most people don’t go to their doctor until they are feeling quite unwell and by that time it can be too late. Attending the dentist regularly not only saves your teeth, it may also save your life. Remember to look after yourself, with regular sixmonthly check-ups. Going to the dentist doesn’t have to be painful or expensive.

Anglican Spring Fete
While there where quite a few grey clouds in Maleny on Saturday morning it didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of members of the St George’s Anglican Church who were busy hosting their Spring Fete. Along with the traditional delights of a fete, the highlights of the day included choir performances under the guidance of Kim Kirkman and the Maleny School Band. Things2Do Celebrate International Peace Day
Cygnet will celebrate its ‘Peace Dialogues’ event through conversation, music and a minute of silence at the Maleny RSL on September 21. The day-long event (9.30am-2.30pm) will foster discussion through a series of intimate table conversations exploring peace-related questions. The minute of silence at 12 noon will support a worldwide Peace Wave, travelling across global time zones. The event will focus on practical peacebuilding strategies and the United Nation’s Declaration of the Right of Peoples to Peace. Established in 1981 by a unanimous UN resolution, Peace Day is observed globally each year on September 21. Admission on the day is free, but numbers are limited so book online at www.trybooking.com/407486, or contact Cygnet at info@cygnetcentre.com or call 0424 793 095.
Spring market
The Beerwah CWA celebrates the start of spring with an Art and Craft Community Market on Saturday, September 15 from 9am-1pm. Head to the CWA Hall on Simpson Street for your fix of all things handmade. While you are there stock your pantry with delicious home-baked delights from the CWA ladies, pick up a Boomerang Bag, and even start your Christmas shopping from one of the stalls. If this all gets too much, recharge your batteries inside the hall with morning tea, or grab a sausage outside in the yard. For all stall enquires please email qcwabeerwah@gmail.com. Proceeds from this market will be sent directly to the Public Rural Crisis Fund, an initiative of the QCWA to assist women and families during times of crisis, especially those suffering in the current drought.
Wittafest is on again
You are invited to an old fashioned family fun day with a picnic atmosphere at the Witta Recreational Club on Saturday, September 15 from 10am-4pm. You can immerse yourselves in the pioneer history of the area, including a display of historical photos, maps and plans of the area, and learn how the land was originally surveyed. If you are a local, you may discover which pioneer family originally selected your property. You can also take a guided tour of the cemetery to hear about local families. You can start the day at the Witta Market across the road in the grounds of the historic Old Witta School House from 7am–12 noon. It is also a great opportunity to wander through the lovely Lutheran Church just up the road, and browse among a variety of stalls, enjoy live entertainment and watch the children take part in organised games and races. There will be homemade food and tasty German beer, sausages and sauerkraut to enjoy. There will also be some great raffles with hourly prize draws to win hampers, meat vouchers and craft. Admission is by gold coin donation on the day and don’t forget to bring your chairs and blankets to enjoy the picnic atmosphere! The Witta Recreation Club is located on Witta Road, Witta.

Contributed by Patricia Bradford The group acknowledges the inspiring article about club members Pam and John Innes published recently in the GC&M News. At the last meeting raffle prizes were drawn and some lucky members scored a new plant to take home. John Innes showed off his beautiful cymbidium orchid and a small weed with pretty little white flowers that is difficult to eradicate. The next meeting will be held on Thursday, September 20 in the garden of Coral Beutel. Meet in the carpark at Woolworths Beerwah at 8.45am to carpool. There won’t be a competition bench, but will have our usual raffle. For more information phone 5496 9169.
Plant of the month
Wallum boronia Boronia falcifolia If you have been fortunate enough to walk through the Beerwah Scientific Area recently, you would no doubt have seen the masses of lovely pink boronia in flower. We tend to think of boronia as being a West Australian flower but a number of species are found in heath and wet wallum areas across the Sunshine Coast and northern NSW. Boronia falcifolia is a branching shrub which rarely reaches a height of more than one metre. The bright pink, wax-like flowers consist of four petals, while the leaves have a needle-like appearance. Boronia and other heath plants were once common along the coastal strip from Noosa to Caloundra, but today this precious natural resource has mainly given way to development. Across the Sunshine Coast these plants are only found in a few protected areas. The Beerwah Scientific Area is now part of the Glass House Mountains National Park. An easy walk can be taken through this area to view the lovely wallum flowers showing their spring colours. Please remember this is a protected area and keep to the fire trail.

Noticeboard Beerwah’s got plenty of talent
Contributed by Helen Page This year's Beerwah Charity Sports talent quest was a great success with more than 20 entrants entertaining the crowd. The judges were impressed with the wealth of talent displayed and the organisers were thrilled with the variety on offer - song, dance, violin, trumpet, guitar and bands. Izzy Schottlander was first in the under eight years category with her rendition of ‘Over the rainbow’, with Azulie Von Dayne coming a close second with ‘Naughty’ from the musical Matilda. In the 8-12 years section, Madeleine Bell won with her dance ‘To this day’ and Jasmine Hazeldine was second with her song and dance, ‘First time in forever’. Georgia and Ashley McIntyre took out the 1217 age group with an expressive contemporary dance, while Kayla Smedley was runner up with her performance of ‘Back to black’. In the open section, the winner Brent Boyer accompanied himself on guitar with a score he composed for a poem written by his grandfather. Kody Roby played keyboard and sang his own composition, ‘I can do better’, to take out second place. The People's Choice Award was given to Natasha Hurren who delivered an emotional country song. Congratulations to all participants for providing such an enjoyable afternoon.
From the churches There are times in life when calamity befalls us – sometimes we see it coming and at other times we do not. It can be devastating. Many times it affects our family, finances and our personal health. In the middle of it, it seems impossible to get around or pass through. We are not alone in these experiences. Many have suffered before us and we may experience them again in the future. But there is hope. There was a man early in human history - as recorded in the Bible - whose name was Job. He was the most godly man of his time and he still experienced the loss of wealth, all his children and his health – he was only left with his foolish wife who told him to give up his integrity, curse God and die (Job. 2:9). Overall, the Book of Job seems pretty depressing until you read its last five chapters. In the final chapter of Job, we see Job sorry for his sin of misunderstanding how great God is and how God blessed the rest of his life. Like Job, we may never know the reason in this

life why bad things happen to us, nor may we have the same great outcome that Job did, but once again let me encourage you - there is always hope. Hope brings peace, joy and meaning to life. Real hope can be found in the Bible. Find a Bible and start reading the Gospel of Mark and then move on to the Gospels of Matthew, Luke and John. If you earnestly ask God to reveal himself to you, you will find the Bible come alive to you. (Reading Mark was the way in which both God and His Word came alive to me. I found the One and only Living God and His Salvation by coming into a right relationship with Him, through the only way possible, His Son, Jesus Christ). I encourage you to be found in a good church this weekend and enjoy the loving and supportive Christian community. As part of the fixed radio (wireless) component of the Network, nbn is proposing to expand the existing radio network base station at the following site to provide high quality wireless broadband services to customers in the surrounding locality. 1. 20 Eagles Nest Court, Bald Knob QLD 4552 (Lot 2 on RP211785) (NBN Ref: Wilkes Knob) The proposed works on site will involve the upgrade of existing technology upon the facility including and not limited to the installation of new antennas, radiocommunications dishes and associated ancillary equipment to enhance transmitting technology. Furthermore, the works will involve the addition of equipment cabinets adjacent to the base of the facility. nbn regards the proposed installations as a Low Impact Facility under the Telecommunications (Low-Impact Facilities) Determination 2018. In the circumstances, it does not require planning approval from Sunshine Coast Regional Council. Further information on this specific proposal can be obtained by emailing Max Peel on nbnenquiries@aurecongroup.com. Written submissions can be sent to Locked Bag 331, Brisbane, QLD 4001 or via email to nbnenquiries@aurecongroup.com The closing date for submissions is Wednesday 26 September 2018. Glasshouse Country Bowls Club Contributed by David Hayes Wednesday, September 5: Social bowls - there was a bit of rain which finished a few games early. Chris Dougan and Chris Freshwater defeated Jenny Hobson and Rae Farrell 30-11. Di Hume and Maz Idle drew with Noelene Annakin and John Annakin. Noelle Dean, Sue O’Hagan and Warren Blackbourne defeated Russell Walmsley, Lyn Griffiths and Bruce Angus 22-10. Millie Freshwater, Jack Timm and Joy Reason defeated John Aitkin, Viv James and Ron Wilson 15-13. Thursday, September 6: Social bowls - after a few pulled out and some early rain we managed to get two games of 10 ends in. Winners of the day were Trevor Dennis and Vic Muscat with two wins + 18 margin. Runners up were Maz Idle and Warren Blackbourne with + 9 margin in the second game. Lucky draw went to our visitors Col and Darryl Kull. Two big thanks to Darryl, who played pennant with us this year before heading home to Victoria, and to Maz Idle who filled in at the last minute when we were a player short that morning. Saturday, September 8: Men’s pennant round 10, final round - division four home to Caboolture Lakes. Great win for our boys to get up by 11 shots in their last game of pennant. Division five was home to Woodford. A huge win by 29 for Glasshouse to finish the season tied first with Caboolture Lakes. Seven wins and three loses to go down by only nine shots overall. So close. It’s that time of year where we all need to start thinking about our spring carnival to be played on Saturday and Sunday, October 13-14. If you know of any players from outside the club please let them know. Cost is $55 each. Flyers are available from our office, and spaces are filling quickly. Our mixed singles is open so put your nominations in at the club. Hope to see many enter as it is the first time we have done this. Great turnout to our annual general meeting and great news to have our full board back again for the second year. Welcome to Rodney Sharpe as green’s director and also Bruce Angus as treasurer. We achieved a lot in the past 12 months with many more things we want to work towards in the next year.
Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Graeme Glover A wonderful week of bowls was had at Maleny Bowls Club and even the drizzle couldn’t dampen the spirits of our visitors. On Monday the club hosted a touring group of bowlers from New Zealand. It was a repeat group on a sports tour that has included Maleny as a highlight on this stage of their tour. It is a credit to the club and, in fact, the town that we should be chosen over much larger coastal clubs for a genuine and friendly small community experience. Thanks to everyone who supported our club in this venture. Well done all. On Wednesday, Northside Social Bowls brought a bus load of bowlers to the club for bowls, beers and burgers. It was a great day and our catering crew did a superb job. The games were played dodging showers, which added to the fun of the day. This is another repeat group that enjoys the Maleny experience. It is nice for our club and the whole community when such positive feedback is given and a bowls experience could be the start for future visits. Wednesday night bowls was washed out as the intermittent showers made it impossible to keep the green dry. See you all next week as the competition continues.
Glasshouse Districts Cricket Club Contributed by Leanne McAllister The club hosted a come and try day on September 7, where participants enjoyed trying their batting, bowling and fielding skills on the Queensland Cricket inflatable net and checking their speeds on the radar. The club is holding a junior clinic with the Australian Cricket Institute during the school holidays on Tuesday, October 2. Senior and junior registrations are now open via www.playcricket.com.au and search 'glasshouse districts’.

Netball grand-finals this weekend There will be plenty of excited Maleny netball players, fans and parents looking forward to the grand finals this Saturday at the Caloundra Indoor Stadium. Maleny Netball Club president Kerri Leddin said that for a club its size this is a remarkable achievement to have all Maleny teams get
through to the semi-finals and four to be going through to the grand finals. “The club and all of our coaches are really proud of the hard work put in by all of the players throughout the season,” Kerri said. Go girls!
Witta Tennis Contributed by Pauline Fraley The Wagtails were washed out. The Whistlers played at Witta against Ballinger Smartinis. It was a bit windy but a great day for tennis. We played well as a team to support Maree Hooley who had a sore knee. Unfortunately she had to forfeit her last set but we had enough games to bring the win home. Score was 42-24 games, 7-1 sets. Team was Liz Mellish, Donna Kuskopf, Aki Lepper and hope your knee gets better Maree. The Wildcats were away against top team Nambas No Faults. Once again it was a close match at four sets each. Pauline, Annie, Libby and Stacey fought hard, but unfortunately went down by one game, with the final score four sets each, 36-37 games. Social tennis is on Monday at 8am and Saturday at 1pm all welcome. Court bookings: 0437 295 501 or www.wittatennis.com.au.
Share the details of your club’s The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker Two ladder competitions were played on Thursday, August 30. Nick Cram easily saw off challenger Ken Barker winning 15-14. Kath Smith went down in a very tight game to Frances Harper 4–5. On lawn two, Jan Barnes defeated Helen Andrews 11–4 in a friendly game. Bev Sockhill and Sally Adams played an orthodox golf game to record a 7–5 result in favour of Bev. This was reformed into a ménage à trois with the arrival of Garth Cotterell after a long absence from the lawn. The result of this golf game was Garth 7, Bev 3 and Sally 2. Just for Laughs Missing a turn
ARIES March 21 - April 20 Hopefully you have taken note of previous messages and set up a reasonable and measured health and work regimen. There are difficulties in talks and negotiations over the weekend, especially if money is involved. However, what you say or how you perform shows your wonderful insight and inner grasp of the situation. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 Many ideas are thrown around by this weekend but it will not hurt to ask a few more questions to get a little more clarity. There is a focus on your alliances and your efforts in that direction need to be pushed along with a little more traction. After you have stated your piece, put yourself into a “see what happens” approach. GEMINI May 22 - June 23 Even though you are well known for your classical, logical perspective, this is one week when you need not expect clarity in matters related to work or home. Relations are stable, but make some decisions and conclude agreements as to how well you like and respect each other. A good weekend for bottom line motivations. CANCER June 24 - July 22 Take note that as a leadership sign your actions require considerable commitment and when they start you can tackle any job with confidence. Get a good dialogue going now. The weekend is for promoting your relationship desires and it needs a good creative outlet in order to be effective to turn an exceptional dream into reality.

department store shop window. For a full three seconds everything went quiet in the cab, then the driver slowly turned around and said, “Look, don’t ever do that again. You scared the living daylights out of me!” The passenger apologised and said: “I didn’t realise that a little tap would scare you so much.” The driver replied: “Sorry, it’s not really your fault. Today is my first day as a taxi driver. For the last 25 years I’ve been driving a hearse!”

LEO July 23 – August 22 There is a mysterious Moon engaging your interest in idealistic dreaming. However, if you have foggy notions about money, avoid unrealistic decisions. Hold off until next week. This means the weekend may be contrary with confusing thoughts and interactions. Take time to see where you can invest wisely for vintage growth. Follow opportunities. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 News is encouraging for you this week. Your positive attitude can prove lucky and improvements come from many directions. There could be reasons for celebrating. This week is good in terms of travel and relatives, which should also be enjoyable. If you need to, convince someone you can be very effective. Find a channel for your energy. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 You may feel a lack of energy and have no motivation regarding your work. It would be better if you could take a break for inner healing. Use art, music, dance, to find the guidance you need. You may find your inner self having a critical conversation. If it is about the future, be kind to yourself and let it go if you can at this time. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 Relations may heat up regarding your home life as well as seeing your partner in a better light. Relationship trends, which were perhaps volatile last month, benefit this month from stabilising influences. Build on shared experiences and review old contacts. Listen to what an older relative has to say. Be willing to commit now.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 You start this week thinking you are well tuned into your inner guide and sense of intuition. Business throughout the week rolls along even though many people show confusing ideas. Best not to get caught up in any negative dynamics and expect to see a spurt of positivity. What you say or present has a powerful impact. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 As the week begins there seems to be much indecisiveness. Perhaps you see that people are being non-committal. It is just that the stars are giving some people dreaminess and they just cannot be brought into productive focus. When you are trying to implement ideas keep news or gossip in proper perspective. Insightful ideas! AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 There are exciting events coming up for you this week and they may have unstable twists and turns. However, taking a chance on one that appeals to you could make it work. As you are an intellectual sign, tune into your emotions that will guide you well in the early hours of the day, but the afternoon requires you to have another catnap. PISCES February 20 - March 20 If you are single a new romantic interest can come into view. The other alternative is perhaps that you see an acquaintance in a new light. The third possibility is that an existing twosome can take on a deeper meaning. If the weekend seems a bit foggy your brain may realise that you had been seeing what you wanted to see all along.

A man was heading home from work. Unfortunately the bus was cancelled, so he had to call a cab. While sitting in the cab, he noticed that the driver missed a turn in an intersection. The man carefully tapped the driver on his shoulder and said: “Sorry Sir, but…” The driver screamed: “AAAAAAHHHH!”. He lost control of the car, nearly hit a bus, went up on the footpath, missed a biker, scraped a fire hydrant and stopped just 30cm from a

Dental Excel.... Dr Finbarr O’Sullivan Dr Finbarr O’Sullivan (BDS) originally qualified in Liverpool in the UK back in 2005. He gained two years experience with the UK’s National Health Service before spending four years in private practice in Ireland. He has a particular interest in and enthusiasm for dental implants; both to replace missing teeth and
to retain those annoying loose dentures. He believes that the huge leaps in technology during recent times have changed the level of treatment on offer. Finbarr also holds a post graduate certificate in cosmetic restorative dentistry (UK) which gives him the added expertise when restoring a beautiful smile.
Implants
Orthodontics
David and Finbarr have a great interest in the placing and restoring of dental implants and are constantly undergoing continuing education in the field. They have recently returned from the Dental XP world symposium on dental implants in Florida where 30 of the top implantologists in the world gave participants the benefit of their latest research and techniques which they could apply to the treatment of their patients. Implants can be used to restore function or cosmetics by filling gaps with implant crowns and bridges or to restrain those dentures which have a mind of their own.
Children in the developmental stages of their dentition are best served by being referred to a specialist orthodontist to guide them to a good result both functionally and aesthetically. However, there are many adult patients and older teenagers who are left with crooked or crowded front teeth who can benefit from the new technology of new orthodontic treatments such as FASTBRACES and INMAN ALIGNER. Raj and Finbarr, in suitable patients, are achieving excellent transformations. A consultation is free and will enable you to explore your options if you have concerns in this area.
Dentures
Bleaching
Dental Excel dentists still enjoy providing dentures, either partial or full, and aim to achieve both a good functional result but also dentures that provide as cosmetically pleasing a result for patients as possible. The dentist works in harmony with a very experienced technician so that between them they can achieve the best result. The correct extension and occlusal balance is of paramount importance for dentures to be wearable and the former is singularly missing in many dentures. Implants, where bone permits, can be life changing when used to stabilise and retain either partial or full dentures but must be viewed as a plus factor and not a substitute for well-constructed dentures. Fixed dentures are also now an alternative for many people.
Both home kit bleaching and in surgery ZOOM Tooth Whitening are available at Dental Excel.
Children Dental Excel welcomes our younger clients and also supports the Medicare Child Dental Benefit Scheme for eligible 2-17 year olds. A dedicated child play area for littlies has recently been added in our Beerwah clinic.
Cosmetic
Payment Plan
For those patients who wish to improve the cosmetics of their smile, all options such as composite veneers and porcelain veneers in association with general bleaching, are available as well as cosmetic crowns where required. SNAP ON SMILES is a really innovative new cosmetic product which for many people is a very easy way of achieving a great smile without major dental work and can both cover existing teeth and fill gaps present. This may be a great short or long-term solution for many people.
Here at Dental Excel we understand that there are so many expenses in modern life which tend to push taking care of that precious dental health well down the list, yet healthy and attractive teeth are a great asset to us all and regular care very often prevents big problems down the line. Therefore, we have recently introduced a ‘NO INTEREST EVER’ payment plan so that patients can have the treatment they need now and do not have to wait, and then pay for the treatment in instalments after (conditions apply). For dental implants / orthodontics / cosmetics we offer a free patient assessment.
