Hi Everyone...
on the Cover
Just in case you didn’t notice our edition date for this week, it is February 13. Yes, just one day before the most ‘love-ly’ time of the year - Valentine’s Day! And I have to say I do like the way that these days the romance doesn’t just have to be with people. Yep - that’s right - for regular uses of our libraries, if you pop into any of the council’s libraries on Thursday, February 14 you can be a part of Library Lover’s Day, which will even have some cool live music from 10am–12noon. While I do like quite like libraries and regularly visit our local ones, I have to admit I am totally and absolutely a lover of reading. So this has got me thinking that if I am going to take this whole Valentine’s Day seriously instead of coming into work, I should stay at home on Thursday, turn off my phone, shut down my emails and dedicate myself to a day of showing utter devotion to my true love. While I definitely won’t turn down any bunches of longstemmed roses and boxes of heart-shaped chocolates, I am looking forward to my day of reading and will return your calls on Friday. Hope you also get to enjoy your true passion on Thursday whatever that might be. Regards,

By Sonia Clark Classic car enthusiasts gathered at the Beerwah home of Shirley Minns on Friday, February 1 to mark two very important milestones – Shirley’s 90th birthday and the ‘birthday’ of Daisy, a 1929 De Soto K series Tourer. The surprise celebration was organised by local resident Karen Ryan, president of the Maroochy Vehicle Owners Club, who along with other club members and Shirley’s daughter Anne came up with the unique celebration idea. Shirley has always loved driving and still proudly retains her licence – though she admits she now drives very carefully. Following the death of Shirley’s husband Stanley in 2004, Shirley joined a hinterland car club and drove her mother-inlaw’s car, a 1966 Nissan Cedric, on many club events. Some club members and Shirley have become good friends. Their help and support after Shirley had to undergo a particularly difficult hip replacement surgery last year had been greatly appreciated by her and her family. During a garage sale clean out of Shirley’s home in September last year the idea to plan the surprise birthday celebration was first hatched. To mark the occasion, Anne and her husband George had flown in from interstate. Shirley said that she knew something was happening but Anne wouldn’t let on what the surprise was. Shirley said she came from a generation that was

brought up to always match an outfit to the occasion, so she had a few outfits picked out for the day. However, as she didn’t Shirley Minns celebrating know what the surprise was she had to let Anne pick the final outfit and luckily it was just right! At 10am, 24 members of the car club assembled to present her birthday surprise, bringing a convoy of classic vehicles to her Beerwah home. Shirley was completely taken aback with joy at the thoughtful gesture. “When I looked out the front of the house, I couldn’t believe how many people from the car club had turned up to wish me happy birthday. They filled the whole area and the joy just rose up in me,” she said. Shirley was given pride of place in Daisy as the group travelled to Pioneer Park and then The Lookout at Glass House Mountains, finishing up at Bankfoot House for a leisurely lunch and birthday cake. Shirley said that riding in Daisy was cool and comfortable and that the whole day was a truly lovely surprise.

Local News Campaign under way for Labor’s Fisher candidate P: 5494 6167
Labor’s recently endorsed candidate for Fisher, Daniel Parsell, has hit the ground running in the lead up to this year’s much anticipated federal election. Last Saturday about 100 Labor members and supporters gathered at the Caloundra CWA hall for a morning of “politics and pancakes”, where they collected campaign shirts and registered as volunteers. The faithful heard from local ALP representatives Susan Lamb, the federal Member for Longman, Shane King, the state Member for Kurwongbah, and Senator Claire Moore, as well as a rousing speech from the candidate. This follows a similar event in Sippy Downs with Opposition’s deputy leader Tanya Plibersek where about 150 Labor supporters turned out to help Mr Parsell kick off his campaign. “I’ve been overwhelmed by the support of people here on the Sunshine Coast,” Mr Parsell said. “People tell me they’ve had a gutful of the Abbot/ Turnbull/Morrison merry-go-round – they just want a stable government in Canberra that will stand up for everyday people.” Twenty-eight-year-old Mr Parsell has worked for ten years as an electrician, with the trade taking him from his hometown of Weipa, to the mines of West Australia and finally to his current home in Glass House Mountains. Mr Parsell has also been studying for a diploma of arts at the University of Southern Queensland.

What’s in it for me? Why should you spend your hard-earned money on a solar system? You know it’s renewable energy and all that environmental stuff, but is it necessary? Spending money needlessly is wasteful, but a solar energy system is not an extra payment. Instead of paying your power bill, you are actually buying your own renewable energy system. A quality solar system should pay for itself within three to three-and-a-half years. Whereas, through your energy supplier, you continue to pay escalating power bills for as long as you require electricity and have nothing to show at the end of it. Once you have purchased your solar system, you are able to generate your own electricity free of charge and have an asset for your home. While there are no guarantees a solar system will increase the actual value of your home, it is still an attractive asset if you decide to sell in the future. How do I pay for it? There are several options. If a full cash payment is not possible, then look at the most affordable finance solution. This may be within your own mortgage, or there are green loans available for environmental projects. For example, if an average power bill is $500 per quarter, this would equate to $166 per month. For an equivalent amount over three-and-a-half years you could own your own 6.6kW solar system. If your electricity bill is lower, you simply get a smaller system. In addition, the Queensland Government is offering you an extremely attractive rebate – more than $3,500 on a 6.6kW system! Going back to the original point … it’s not a matter of whether you are going to spend the money, it’s how your money is better spent. He has put these studies on hold to contest the election. “With ten years’ trade experience, I know how tough it can be to find secure work,” Mr Parsell said. “With so many residents on the Sunshine Coast relying on insecure industries such as construction, tourism and hospitality, workers desperately need a government that will stand up for their rights. “While Andrew Wallace and Scott Morrison look to give tax cuts to big business, my focus is on securing the best possible future for the hard-working people of Fisher.” In a recent visit to the Sunshine Coast, federal Labor leader Bill Shorten welcomed Mr Parsell to the campaign. “I know Dan will be a formidable advocate for the Sunshine Coast community,” Mr Shorten said. “His experience working as an electrician means he will be a strong voice fighting for good, secure jobs on the Sunshine Coast. “Only Labor has a plan to properly fund our schools and hospitals and reverse cuts to penalty rates. “I’m looking forward to working with Dan in the coming months to outline Labor’s plans for the Sunshine Coast,” Mr Shorten said.

Highway upgrade motors on Queensland Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey last week inspected progress and met with construction workers on the Bruce Highway upgrade between Caloundra Road and Sunshine Motorway, unveiling an artist’s impression of the final design/layout for the new interchanges. The joint Commonwealth and Queensland funded project promises big changes for motorists as construction on one of the Sunshine Coast’s largest projects moves ahead. Mr Bailey said an early preview of the new interchange had been released on the TMR website to give the community a first look at the coming changes. “From the new diverging diamond interchange at Caloundra Road, through to the new Sunshine Motorway interchange and upgrades at Sippy Downs, this area is undergoing a complete transformation,” Mr Bailey said. “It’s a transformation that will provide safer and smooth connections from the Bruce Highway to central parts of the Sunshine Coast for the more than 63,000 motorists who drive this stretch each day. “The artist’s impressions we’ve released give the community a closer look at the new infrastructure that is being delivered as part of the upgrade. “Construction is expected to continue until late 2020 so we thank motorists and the community for their patience.” Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace said

By Sonia Clark The community and environmental movement Keep Queensland Beautiful recently awarded Landsborough its prestigious Community Spirit award. This award follows countless hours of work from various local community members to register the town in the Queensland Tidy Towns accreditation and awards program for 2018. GC&M News caught up with Bob Burns, Landsborough School of Arts Hall Inc secretary, who with other committee and community members helped facilitate Landsborough’s registration for the award. Bob said the idea to enter originally came from correspondence received from Cr Rick Baberoski who had put out a call for any hinterland towns that would like to champion the cause and register to be accredited in the Tidy Towns process. Bob said he and Stephen Clarke, the association’s treasurer, thought this exercise would be a great way to bring local groups together and open dialogue. “We thought the process would be interesting and if we got more of an understanding we would try it next year - we certainly didn’t think we’d be up for an award,” Bob said. Working with a number of local community stakeholders and with support from Cr Baberoski and representatives of Sunshine Coast Council’s placemaking team, the group set about addressing the eight key criteria that formed the basis of the accreditation process. The key focus areas were environmental innovation and protection, heritage and culture, community spirit, litter action, resource recovery, waste management, water conservation and energy efficiency. The town was formally assessed at the end of October with a visit from the Keep Queensland Beautiful CEO, David Curtin. “The accreditation involved a full day’s itinery and involved meeting with our town’s various community groups,” Bob said.
Back – Tamie Kacprzack, Ian Hope, Rosie Fields, Cr Rick Baberowski Front - Bob Burns and Diana Michael “Everyone was so passionate about what they do that the assessor couldn’t help but be impressed. Also, with the input from council, we were able to admirably address every assessment criterion. “The win just knocked our socks off! The whole exercise has been about building community spirit and now we have 4.5-star accreditation, making the town a serious player towards the next awards. “It has engendered serious pride in our community – we genuinely didn’t realise how good we are!”, Bob said.

Discovering the gift of giving By Sonia Clark Landsborough hair stylist Natalie Hazelden plans to volunteer her time and expertise by travelling to Indonesia later this year with Hair Aid Australia. The Australian-based charity was established to give homeless and economically disadvantaged people a way of achieving self-sufficiency by teaching them hair cutting skills, which allows them to earn a living. Natalie is thrilled to be able to donate her time to once again help those in need. Last September, 15 Australian hairdressers travelled to poverty-stricken areas of Indonesia to teach the basics of hair cutting. Natalie said that the social enterprise initiative allowed disadvantaged people to develop skills and confidence to hopefully set up their own micro business. “It was amazing to work with other like-minded professionals, and I’m looking forward to heading to Indonesia in September again to join the Hair Aid team. Many people we taught last year have had the amazing opportunity to open up their own little salon, which will help to feed their families and allow them to be more selfsufficient,” Natalie said. Last year, four locations in Indonesia were identified as key areas for the Hair Aid team to visit and share their skills with locals. Upon arrival in Indonesia, the Hair Aid team were split into groups and allocated a village. Natalie spent her time teaching a five-day intensive course in a village about two hours out of Ubud and she
said it was truly a life changing experience. “I loved it! To be able to share my knowledge and to give to others was amazing,” Natalie said. “Even though I was teaching others, the villagers also taught me so much – such as you don’t need a lot to be happy and that happiness is gained from giving. I also learnt that we can all give something, even ordinary people like myself can make a big difference to others.” Following the intensive course, participants were awarded a completion certificate and given a hair cutting kit to help establish their own business. Natalie is now hoping to raise funds to travel to Indonesia on September 2-7 this year, and to also take donations of useful items such as books, clothing and practical everyday items. She is planning some local fundraising events with details to be confirmed, including a local braiding workshop at the Beerwah Community Hall, and a lunch in July. To support her fundraising efforts, Natalie has set up a Go Fund Me page (gofundme.com and search for ‘Fundraiser for Natalie Hazelden) and a Facebook page (search for ‘Help Natalie to teach haircuts in Indonesia’). Any donation will be appreciated, especially local businesses wanting to donate raffle prizes for events.

A belated Happy New Year! So much has happened over the past few months. In December, our chamber welcomed more than 50 people to The Shed at Aussie World to our annual Christmas party. It was a wonderful event with many new and interesting business faces attending. It’s inspiring to see first-hand the diversity of our business community. We are now in the remaining five months of the financial year and the chamber is investing in a range of initiatives to support our members in achieving their business goals. This month we launch the first of our business showcases - networking events where members have the opportunity to welcome our broader membership to their business. This is an important element for each of us to learn about the expertise, opportunities and offerings in our business community and then advocating for each other. We are very excited to announce that our first showcase will be at Beerwah Hideaway on February 19. We will also be introducing quarterly feature events, including networking breakfasts and round table lunches. A round table lunch is where we have a focus on a particular upcoming issue, for example, local government
elections, and discuss the implications and views of the business community in relation to that issue. Of course, we are also continuing with our networking evenings, workshops and other opportunities. Next month, our members will also be able to participate in a business after hours networking event hosted by Caloundra Chamber of Commerce at Australia Zoo. It will be the first of our many efforts to connect our members with other businesses across the region. We are also collaborating with several other chambers - Caloundra, Maroochydore and Kawana - to take part in shared end of financial year and Christmas celebrations. Watch this space. Over the next few months we are hoping to build our relationships with neighbouring chambers and businesses, most importantly with our Maleny friends. As opportunities progress, we will share these with our members. These combined opportunities will help to open the door to potential clients, peers and partnerships with members of other chambers. We are very excited to be able to bring to life these collaborations as part of our value offering to our members.

Business showcase series
Beerwah Hideaway will welcome local businesses to the launch of a special business showcase series on Tuesday, February 19 from 6pm. An initiative of the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce, the business showcase series offers chamber members and guests an insight into local businesses, their stories, challenges and their inspirations. Hosting a friend’s wedding in 2015 at their own home opened the door for Glen Kerr and Amanda Warren to combine their passion for property and business - resulting in the purchase of Beerwah Hideaway. “It really all came together when we were hosting a friend’s wedding and couldn’t source the items we were looking for," Amanda said. "Solving this problem led to establishing a hire business and later buying the Hideaway, renovating it and revitalising the whole business.” Amanda and Glen will share the challenges and opportunities that have helped shape Beerwah Hideaway at the business showcase next Tuesday evening. Cost to attend is $20, which includes a drink on arrival and canapes. Bookings through Eventbrite and searching for 'Business Showcase Beerwah Hideaway'.

Contributed by Anita Verwayen. secretary MVCA Inc The idea for a men’s shed for Mooloolah was originally flagged in 2016 by the management committee of the Mooloolah Valley Community Association (MVCA) Inc. The aim of developing a men’s shed is to give men (young and old) a place to come together and form friendship networks in a non-judgemental or discriminatory space, and where they can discuss their issues with other men. Having a local shed provides a better opportunity for reaching out, encouraging and supporting local males. Now that the shed is due to become a reality, the next urgent issue is to find funding to build the facility and MVCA will apply for funding grants. MVCA will financially support the development of the Mooloolah Valley Men’s Shed (MVMS) and secure vital funding until the MVMS becomes an incorporated entity in its own right. A steering committee of ten local men has been formed to take the project forwards and a men’s shed committee will be elected later in 2019. Nominations for all new positions will be advertised in local media and on Facebook. MVCA has had the Community Centre site professionally surveyed by Murray & Associates, a team of land surveyors and town planners, and a ‘material change of use’ application has been lodged with the Sunshine Coast Council. MVCA has purchased a watertight container to house donations of tools and equipment until the shed is built. The site has been levelled in readiness for construction of the shed and as the site for the container. We are encouraging local businesses and community members to support the project and have already received some fantastic tools and equipment from our wonderful Mooloolah Valley locals. For further information, please phone the MVCA administrative office on 5494 7822 between 9.30am-1 pm or contact Bernie Verwayen on 0410 549 475.

Maleny petrol station update
Maleny High School captain wins Zonta award
The decision on a new petrol station in Maleny is edging closer. The development application for the service station with a food and drink outlet at the corner of Cudgerie and Bunya streets has created controversy within the Maleny community, especially those who consider the location directly opposite the primary school as inappropriate. Last week, the developer Synergy Property Partners failed to lodge further traffic related information with the Queensland Government’s State Assessment and Referral Agency (SARA), which assesses development applications affecting state interests. The agency will now assess the application on the information already submitted and will provide Sunshine Coast Council with its determination in early March. If SARA deems the development inappropriate, council will most likely refuse the application. However, if it finds it is appropriate, council will have to make its own determination purely on whether the proposal meets its planning scheme codes. As the development is deemed ‘code assessable’, there is no provision for community consultation. A legal fight against the development has begun with a fundraising campaign launched via the crowd-funding platform Pozible. The ‘No fuel opposite our school EVER’ group hopes to raise $5,000 to engage a legal team to provide guidance on how to stop the development. To donate go to pozible.com and just search for ‘Maleny’.
Mikki Doonan, 2018 captain at Maleny High School, has won the club section of Zonta International’s Young Women in Public Affairs (YWPA) Award. She was presented with her certificate and a cheque at a recent Zonta Club of Blackall Range dinner, with her parents in attendance. This is a first step towards one of 10 possible international awards, each worth US$4000 (AUS$5600). The next step is winning an award in District 22 (all of Queensland and northern NSW). There are 32 awards given at this level. Mikki said she was proud to receive the award and hoped to represent the club well at the next level. “I am impressed with the work of Zonta, and I hope to be able to achieve in my life and work towards all of the goals of the organisation, advancing the status of all women worldwide,” Mikki said. “I know this year is the centenary of Zonta International, and what an honour it would be to receive an award in this year,” she said. YWPA was initiated in 1990 at a convention in Dallas by then Zonta International president Leneen Forde, who was later appointed Governor of Queensland. Its goal is to encourage young women to participate in public affairs by making a commitment to the volunteer sector and showing leadership and dedication to empowering women worldwide through service and advocacy.
Zonta president Julie Bevan with Miiki Doonan President of the Blackall Range Zonta Club, Julie Bevan, praised the amount of volunteering work Mikki had achieved over all of her high school years. “Mikki has not only studied effectively and been school captain, but she has also been involved with the environment, chaplaincy, formal and Interact committees as well as volunteering with community organisations, Lions, Rotary, Maleny Music and Food festivals, Wood Expo and Oaktree. We wish her well for her future career,” Julie said. Mikki expects to study medicine at university this year.

Active goal possible with NDIS
After 20 years of making do by himself, Glass House Mountains local David Hayes (pictured) is blown away by the support he is receiving through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), which will make a big difference in his life. A year ago David, who was born without legs and hands, didn’t know what the NDIS was about and thought it had nothing to do with him. Nicole Lawson Photography “I don’t know what other people do, I never knew there were things I could get help with,” David said after a meeting with Carers Queensland about accessing and using the scheme. “Any 40-year-old guy can fix a light bulb and hammer a nail. I can’t do that,” he said. “If I can get help with that, that’s a big thing for me.” With his NDIS plan, David will be upgrading his prosthetic legs to a type more suitable for active and daily living. He is a keen lawn bowls player and enjoys keeping fit, but has to be selective with his activities. Swimming in the surf is something David would love to do and with better prosthetic legs, he is looking forward to being able to swim at the beach for the first time in 20 years. Right now David is learning more about the support available to make daily living activities more accessible. Carers Queensland, the NDIS local area coordination partner in the community for the Sunshine Coast, will continue to help David connect with community support and learn more about using the NDIS. David’s advice to others like him who never thought the NDIS was for them is to look into it. “At least make a phone call, see what it can offer you. I would never have considered doing it if someone hadn’t suggested it,” David said. New members for Arts Council committee
Contributed by Judith Ross-Smith Well-known Brisbane actors/directors/playwrights Margery and Michael Forde have relocated to Maleny and the Maleny Arts Council (MAC) has snapped them up for the 2019 committee, with both elected at the AGM last week. President Peter Lavery welcomed them to MAC. “Unfortunately, our current secretary Kerry Milner has had to resign because of pressure of other commitments, but we are delighted Margery and Michael have joined us, bringing their enormous professional theatre experience to our group,” Peter said. Members of the previous committee were re-elected at the AGM including Peter Lavery, treasurer John Marsden, PR Judith Ross-Smith and Margaret Taylor, who also represents the Maleny Singers. Peter Lavery, in his report, said that 2018 saw the Arts Council take on an ambitious program that was, in general, well supported, breaking even financially for the year and at the same time breaking some new ground. “We will mount our second Winter Festival in 2019 and again one of our productions, ‘Larry and the Dame’, will be included in the Horizon Festival program,” he said. The first production of the year would star ABC comedy legend Michael Veitch, who brings back the golden age of radio with ‘Mystery in the Air’, on Sunday, April 7. The Winter Festival will include two jazz greats from the US, Laurence Hopgood and Rhiannon, on August 7, with The Australian Voices, an outstanding Brisbane choral ensemble, to appear on August 18. The festival will finish with the outrageous cabaret double act ‘Larry and the Dame’. Newly elected members of the MAC committee: (back) John Marsden, Michael and Margery Forde, Margaret Taylor, (front) Judith RossSmith and Peter Lavery

Contributed by John Andrews The Blackall Range Woodcrafters’ Guild recently completed a number of beautiful pieces for the new Sunshine Coast University Hospital chapel. The Guild was asked to make several items of furniture for the new chapel, which will represent all faiths. A lectern and several tables were made in southern silky oak, all wood sourced from trees salvaged on the Blackall Range.
Immediate past president John Muller (standing in for president Rob Otto), chaplain Ann Shepperson and chaplain Glady Malligan The Guild has facilities to mill logs and dry sawn wood in their own solar kiln, so the project really was from “chainsaw to fine furniture”. When delivering the furniture, Ann Shepperson, the chaplain at the chapel, spoke to one of the Woodies about a fitting sculpture in wood to be displayed on one of the tables. She wanted it to represent all faiths using the chapel and to show a caring depiction of humanity. Philippa Friend, a Woodie and an artist, was asked to design a sculpture to the specification. The design chosen was of an adult in a caring pose with a child. The wood chosen was red cedar (Toona australis) which was salvaged from the Atherton Tableland from stumps left behind by the early timber getters. The carving was done by Tom Black, Kaz Depczynski, Dave Southern and John Muller.

Christmas trees support Neighbourhood Centre
Maleny Neighbourhood Centre is set to benefit from donations totaling $2000 contributed by visitors to the Christmas Tree Festival held in December at the Maleny Uniting Church. In receiving the donation, centre coordinator Nooreen Harris said the centre was appreciative of the Uniting Church and other similar organisations that raised funds to supplement its income, thus enabling the centre to direct funds to badly needed services in Maleny and surrounds. “The centre relies heavily on community engagement and partnerships like the one with the Uniting Church,” Nooreen said. “Programs like emergency relief support, the Shared House Project, and CHASM’s small relocatable house project all reflect the needs in this community.” she said. Christmas Tree Festival spokesman Murray Robertson said that the planning team was delighted with the community response to the 2018 festival, themed Christmas Growing Up. “This is a non-competitive event which has become a part of Maleny’s Christmas celebrations, with over 1000 people visiting the church to admire over 40 displays from local groups,” Murray said. “To all the visitors and the tree contributors and volunteers who made this happen we offer our sincere thanks. With your donations, we are very pleased to continue our support for the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre,” he said.

Community loses a lovely lady
By Lea Parkes A celebration of the very full life of Beerwah’s Gwen Kippen took place on Monday, February 4 at the Gregson and Weight Chapel in Caloundra. Gwen, who was the youngest of seven children, was born in Bega in NSW in 1948. However, after living in Queensland since her early 20s she proudly became a Queenslander during State of Origin and was an avid Broncos fan. In 1974 after she married Doug, they settled in Beerwah and their family soon grew with the arrival of Troy and Bronwyn. Doug’s work took them around the state, moving to Townsville, Mackay and Bundaberg before finally returning to Beerwah Gwen always found a way to help others and at every port of call she became involved in sporting, community and charity groups, including local aged care services, the Lions Club, the Lifeline Op Shop, the CWA and Club Glass House.
Gwen happily gave up her time to help others and regularly offered up Doug’s time as well. Doug summed up his wife of 45 years in a few words, saying “she was just such a lovely lady”.
Fishing for a great cause By Lea Parkes
2018 marked the 17th annual fishing competition for Club Glass House and, as in all previous years, it was about having fun and fundraising for services and support for children. For the past seven years the beneficiaries of the event have been the local paediatric services through Sunshine Coast University Hospital charity Wishlist. Recently Wishlist CEO Lisa Rowe visited Club Glass House to meet some of those involved in the event and to receive a cheque for an impressive $6,296.15 raised in last year’s competition, which took the combined total funds raised since 2011 to more than $27,000. Lisa said Wishlist was extremely grateful to be the beneficiary of the club’s fundraising efforts and that it was fantastic to see the hinterland community making such a difference to families locally. “The fishing competition is a popular event for the club each and every year, and Club Glass House manager Sharon Bochow is a huge driver of this campaign,” Ms Rowe said. The very humble Sharon is keen to acknowledge that it is the generous support from local sponsors that helps make this event such a memorable drawcard on the fishing
community calendar.
Sharon would like to thank all of the businesses that have supported the event over many years, and to let local business people know that if they are interested in supporting the competition in the future she would be keen to hear from them. Sponsorships start from $300 and you can contact Sharon at the club on 5436 5000. The sponsors of this year’s event were D&S Crane Hire & Rigging, Go Turf, Fraser Island Fishing Units, Arty Concreting, Doug’s Mini Excavator, All Diesel Services and Repair, Barra Jacks, Bassett Barks Pty Ltd, Spracon, Sunshine Coast Afloat, All Energy HQ, Matilda Fruit Barn, Mooloolah Hair Care, Berrells’ Electrical Services, evaKool, Braetop Berries, Bidmex, Beerwah Glasshouse Motel, GDM – Glasshouse Design & Manufacturing and Allandale Pines Glass House Mountains.

You Said It Long trip to Bribie Island
Recently my wife and I left our home at Glass House Mountains at 10.45am and the journey was initially uneventful with us sitting on the speed limit. We even commented on the scarceness of traffic on the road. That didn't last long, as approaching Ninghi things started to happen very quickly with the traffic becoming quite congested. After passing through Ninghi it then started being a joke, with traffic bumper to bumper. Fortunately two separate ambulances travelling to Bribie with lights and sirens blazing miraculously got through and drivers in the traffic need to be congratulated for the way they assisted them. We sat in one of the two lanes moving about ten feet or so every five minutes, people were out of their vehicles walking dogs and some actually left the driver and walked along the walking track on the nearside. Finally we could see the traffic lights just short of the Bribie Bridge. Boy was that an absolute mess, traffic coming out of Sandstone Point was as heavy as what we were in. Did I mention the signage for an event? Yes, an event at the hotel just before the Bribie Bridge. Once finally over the bridge we realised there weren’t any traffic accidents, just traffic backed up for kilometres. We finally arrived at our destination in Bongaree Place at 1pm, two hours and 15 minutes of travelling, while it took me 40 minutes to return home later that evening. The silliest thing the local council ever did was to allow the building of the hotel at the bridge to Bribie and, furthermore, allowing these massive events to take place. If they can afford to put them on, let then supply transport to the venue and use the various open blocks of land for paid parking miles back near the Bruce. It works in other places. They call it ‘park and ride’. Brian Stallworthy Glass House Mountains
Re: Dude where’s my park
In response to James Grimard’s letter in GC&M News (January 30), I not only agree with his assessment of the problem but am happy to report the solution he proposes will come to fruition in the near future. Readers should know I share their frustrations surrounding the delays to duplicating the rail line between Beerburrum and Nambour and the need for station and parking upgrades. The delays have been unacceptable. But thanks largely to a generous contribution of $390 million in funding through our federal colleagues, Andrew Wallace and Ted O’Brien, and part funding from the current state government the project is now in detailed design phase. This includes upgraded parking at Landsborough station. I will endeavour to keep Mr Grimard, the broader community and Landsborough businesses informed of consultation and construction timelines. Hopefully I’ll be able to demonstrate to Mr Grimard that there are some politicians who don’t succumb to “political gluttony” and do demonstrate initiative. Andrew Powell Member for Glass House

Election propaganda
No-one, it seems, is safe from the hyperbole, electioneering and rubbery figures of the LNP Coalition Government. The full page ad in the Glasshouse Country News of February 6 is one example. According to the Queensland Government’s Department of Transport and Main Roads, the Bruce Highway Upgrade Program is a 10-year program (2013-14 to 2027-28) with a $10 billion investment, which is jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland governments. The Queensland Government has committed to providing $200 million each year (based on 80:20 funding arrangements) for upgrades on the Bruce Highway. There is no mention whatsoever of the Beerburrum Rail Duplication Project as a key project. In May 2018, the Australian Government committed $390 million in federal funding to that project on a 50:50 basis. In June 2018, the Queensland Government committed $160.8 million in line with the National Land Transport Network arrangements for projects of national significance outside of metropolitan areas, thus eligible for an 80% commitment from the federal government. There remains a sticking point about funding. $156 million is still missing. It would appear that the federal LNP government does not consider upgrades to the Brisbane-Cairns railway line are of national significance. However, they do seem to consider that inland rail from Melbourne to Brisbane is a more worthy project, perhaps because 25% of its income will come from transporting coal. The advertisement touts the benefits of road upgrades, but rail duplication upgrades will also contribute to jobs, provide safer and faster transport, and speed up freight at much less cost. It seems superfluous to advertise government expenditure, when residents have been subjected to earth works and traffic disruptions along the Bruce Highway for years now. Perhaps citizens need to be alerted about the forthcoming election and that a vote for the LNP is a vote for roads, but maybe not rail. Ken Dyer Landsborough
Envirobank
I don’t know who thought of this harebrained scheme. It is absolutely ridiculous. I don’t know why whoever was behind this idea didn’t look at how bottle returns are handled in other countries. We have had experience with bottle and can returns in the USA and the Netherlands. Supermarkets, even small ones, the size of IGA and Woolworths in Beerwah and Maleny, have their own bottle return machines installed in the store. When you go shopping you feed the bottles or cans into a machine. It then prints out a docket for the value of the returned items. This docket is then used at the cash register as part payment of any purchases. Simple and easy. The fact that you must have exactly 50 items, which are then credited to a bank account, is ludicrous. How much do you to have to spend on fuel to drive to an Envirobank site to recover a small amount of cash. John Gyzemyter Maleny

Re: Recycling anger
I would like to respond to the article about the Envirobank at the Beerwah Hotel in the January 30 edition of GC&M News. I too have had a bad experience with Envirobank. I deposited seven bags into the Envirobank pod at Aussie World two weeks ago. The bags were filled, as it states on the front of the bag (‘fill me up!’), but I was credited for only 350 containers instead of the 1000, which were the likely total. I have been short changed by around $70. Being a pensioner this is a massive impact on my finances. I have written several emails to Envirobank, (who have since removed phone contact details from the website), with no response. I also advised Envirobank that I had deposited the same way, with more than 50 containers in each bag, in the past and there had been no problems depositing and being credited the correct amount. I also mentioned in the email the containers all state 10c refund on them, so therefore it should not matter if they were crushed or not. I also advised of the fact that the bags are hard to get hold of in my email. I am yet to get a response from Envirobank. I will be taking my recyclables directly to the depot in future. Allison McMaster Mooloolah
Re: Recycling anger
I was under the belief the recycling program was initiated by the state government as one of the `save the planet’ schemes. Ignoring who is in power or not, I believe it is the duty of all members of parliament to ensure the viability of the implementation of initiated programs costing taxpayer dollars. The Beerwah Hotel is well within its rights to ask for the Envirobank to be removed from their premises as some of the behaviour witnessed is not acceptable. I call on Andrew Powell MP as our representative to get it sorted. People trying to do the right thing should not have to drive to Kunda Park or anywhere past their nearest centre, thus incurring costs which negate the original aim. If elected politicians are unable to sort out these minor hiccups what hope do we have by putting faith in them. The `Poddy Dodger` Peachester
Options to recycle containers
In response to the article last week about the Beerwah Envirobank facility closing, there are other options for people to receive cash for their containers at the time of taking them in. For anyone not aware, there is the Containers for Change depot at 148 Mark Road East, Caloundra West. There's no need for bags this way. Also, as mentioned in the article, there is the Tomra Recycling Centre at 5 Pike Street, Kunda Park with reverse vending machines and bags. Natasha Odgers Diamond Valley

Lovely lap quilts
I started a group called ‘Lovely Lap Quilts for the Elderly’ in Brisbane 3½ years ago and it’s still going strong. I have moved to Maleny and still travel to Brisbane to gather with this wonderful group of people to continue with this rewarding project. We make lap quilts from donated new and recycled fabrics and make them into a rag quilt design. We have already donated some of the quilts made in Brisbane to the Blue Care facility in Maleny. I would love to welcome you to join me in starting a new group in Maleny. There will be a meeting at the Maleny Library on Saturday, March 16 from 1-3pm. You don’t need sewing skills as we have lots of steps in the process of creating these quilts, eg, sorting fabric, cutting, designing, washing, snipping, to name just a few. If you are interested in knowing more or getting involved it would be wonderful to meet you. You can find out more from our Facebook page facebook.com/lovelylapquilts/. Maggie Landman Maleny
Stop Adani music video shoot
A bunch of Maleny locals have organised a fun family activity for those who would like to express their opposition to the opening up of the Galilee Basin to coal mining. The first of six intended mines is owned by Indian company Adani. Hence the name of the local group is #StopAdani Maleny. We are a growing group that started with help from #StopAdani Sunshine Coast, which is much larger. We are dedicated to preventing new coal mines. They are shooting a community music video on the patch of ground opposite the Maleny newsagency on Sunday, February 17 from 10.30-11.30 am. The locally written parody is called Y Dig Up Coal and is to the tune of ‘YMCA’ by the Village People. “With sun to spare we say – Why Dig Up Coal / With renewable power from the wind and the sun/ Enough – for everyone”. School News Calling all future parliamentarians
If you are aged between 15 and 25 years, have a keen interest in politics, want to expand your resume, get involved in the community, make new friends and help shape Queensland policy, then the YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament (QYP) might be for you. Nominations are now open for YMCA Youth Parliament and close on Friday, February 22. This will be the 24th anniversary of QYP and it holds many exciting opportunities for young people. Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell, is encouraging young people to get involved by applying to become the ‘Youth Member’ for Glass House. “Each seat in Queensland has its own Youth Member. Holly Baxter, an articulate young woman has served as the Youth Member for Glass House for several years now. “I’ve been proud to have her represent us in the Youth Parliament, so if you share her passion and enthusiasm for politics you should consider applying,” Mr Powell said. Youth Parliament is a platform that enables young people to make a real, tangible change in the world. Youth Members are offered the chance to take part in the drafting of mock legislation, some of which has previously been formally adopted by the Queensland Parliament. “QYP is also a fantastic opportunity for elected representatives to keep in touch with the opinions of young people on topics that affect them. Youth Members are a gateway to connecting to young people in the electorate, so being elected as a young leader is an honour and an incredibly important position to hold,” Mr Powell said.
Preps picnic at Peachester
Contributed by Sally Joyce Peachester State School has welcomed its largest intake of prep students for some years. The 22 new students have settled in nicely at the school and are well on their way to learning success. Last week the children enjoyed bringing their teddies along for a popcorn picnic in one of our outdoor classrooms. This year will see the introduction of a mentoring program where senior students will buddy up with preppies to help them in the playground and enjoy friendships with the older children. The school has welcomed many new families to all grades at Peachester School and looks forward to getting to know them all this year. Because the school has grown so much in the past year, it is also getting to know a number of new staff members too. School principal Kim Fillery said the school was very lucky to have such an experienced and dedicated staff. “Peachester is a growing area and a lot of families have decided to move here because of the education their children receive at our school. “It is very humbling and we are extremely proud of our reputation as a quality school, delivering successful outcomes for students both academically and socially,” she said.

Health &Beauty Ankle Injuries require a proper diagnosis.
Not many people seek a professional diagnosis when they roll or injure their ankles. However, if your injury is not properly diagnosed and not rehabilitated correctly, you can ultimately be left with a weaker ankle that is at risk of being injured again. There are many structures around the ankle and a proper diagnosis is essential for your rehabilitation. So, what do you do? 1. If you injure your ankle in any way you should first reduce the inflammation with antiinflammatories and/or ice, and then strap or firmly bandage your ankle to reduce movement. 2. Get your injury properly diagnosed. Returning to work and sport requires immediate medical intervention for best outcomes. An ultrasound may be suggested four days post injury if there is a chance of a tear or fracture. Every rehabilitation program is designed specifically towards what you injured in your foot/ankle, so this diagnosis is important. Get to know your local podiatrists at Stepping Out Podiatry (1300 881 082) as they are the foot and ankle specialists, and are your first point of contact for all foot and ankle injuries.

Suicide has a devastating impact on families, friends and communities. We all have a part to play in suicide prevention. Training to prevent suicide is available to a limited number of people across Glasshouse Country on Wednesday, February 27, 5.30–9pm at the Beerwah CWA building, Simpson Street. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, more than 60,000 people make a suicide attempt in Australia every year. Suicide is the leading cause of death among people aged between 15 and 44 years. Communities can make a difference by having people trained to gain skills in suicide prevention. The safeTALK training is open to anyone 15 years and older, regardless of prior experience. It invites participants to become more alert to the possibility of suicide and how to prevent it, and uses the easy-to-follow TALK steps – Tell, Ask, Listen and Keep safe.
People across the community, such as grandparents, parents, sporting club coaches and team captains as well as other well connected members of church, school and community groups are encouraged to participate. This is about building community capacity. This safeTALK training is sponsored by the Caloundra Community Centre and the All-in-One Fitness Centre. This training is promoted by the Suicide Prevention in Communities Reference Group and coordinated by the Caloundra Community Centre and Glasshouse Country Suicide Prevention Working Group. There is a minimal fee of $15 to cover a workbook and supper. To register for the safeTALK training, go to events.humanitix.com.au/safetalk-workshopglasshouse-country. For enquiries, contact Natasha Odgers on 0418 720 515 or email natasha@calcomm.org.au.
Support for locals with type 2 diabetes Health professionals from Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service (SCHHS) are gearing up to deliver two free workshops at Caloundra on Wednesday February 27 and March 6 to educate and support local residents diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. People living with the condition can receive updated information and resources and have their questions answered by attending the workshops. SCHHS health promotion officer Kerry Roach says the workshops help participants to better manage their condition and reduce risks and complications. “The workshop provides a group-based learning atmosphere where participants can hear from a

range of health professionals on ways to manage their condition daily to reduce those risks, as well as feel comfortable talking to others who are in a similar situation,” Kerry said. “We have been providing the workshops for over five years and our team of nurses, dieticians, social workers and health promotion officers are very dedicated to continuing to support people with their type 2 diabetes self-management practice.” The workshop session is open to anyone diagnosed with type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes and family or carers are also welcome to attend. All workshops run from 9am-1pm and bookings are essential. Phone 5479 9670.

Community Groups Coochin Creek Bushland Group
Contributed by Gordon Reddek The Coochin Creek Bushland Group will hold its first working bee of 2019 on Tuesday, February 19. This will not be a full working bee as it is primarily aimed at giving a bit of TLC to last year’s plantings to make sure they survive the hot weather. To avoid the hottest time of the day we will start at 7am and knock off at about 9am. We are a small but enthusiastic group and always on the lookout for new members, so anybody interested in bush care is welcome to join us. Participation is free and we end with a cup of tea. Please come with a hat, long pants, a long-sleeved shirt and good working shoes. All equipment required will be supplied. We will meet at the gate to Caralan Park, at the corner of Emma Place and Caralan Way Beerwah. For more information please contact Gordon on 0406 638 544.

Plenty of expo fun
Contributed by Susan Dalziel The Combined Probus Club of Maleny recently enjoyed being part of the Hinterland Aussie Day Expo in Maleny with a brightly decked out stall in the Probus colours of royal blue and yellow. Led by president John Gyzemeyter, an enthusiastic group of members explained their love of Probus to the huge crowd of visitors, old and young. Vice president Stan McCallum shook hands with passers-by and by noon, seven eager locals had added their names and contact details to the ‘interested’ list. They will all be invited to a Probus general meeting with a guest speaker and an opulent morning tea, in the first instance as guests with a view to being invited to join the club, whose motto is Fellowship, Fun and Friendship. ‘Social stimulus to thinking’ was one description
Lions begin new year
Contributed by Bob Banner After a well-deserved break over Christmas, the Beerwah Lions are ready to take on the challenge of a new year. They began the year with an enjoyable Australia Day barbeque at the home of Max and Denise Pinwill, complete with damper, prawns and crabs. Next event on the calendar will be the club’s first dinner meeting for 2019 to be held at Club Glass House this week on February 13.
that appealed to the expo crowd. Probus meets in the Maleny Uniting Church on the fourth Wednesday of each month. The next meeting is on Wednesday, February 27 with local environmental dynamo from Hinterland Bushlinks Susie Duncan as guest speaker. For further information, email lyn.hodgkins@gmail.com.
The club will continue to hold its can collection on the first Saturday of each month. Look for us between 8.30-11am in the northern entrance to the Coochin Creek Co-op yard. The club can only accept cans that are whole (not crushed) and unfortunately we are now only able to accept cans as a donation. Any money raised by local projects is donated to worthy causes, most of them in our own community.

Elected Representatives Andrew Wallace
Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace’s Tour de Fisher Over five days in January I cycled more than 200km and stopped to speak to local residents in 26 different towns in Fisher, including all over the hinterland from Glass House Mountains to Conondale. During my Tour de Fisher I had one-on-one conversations with more than 200 people who live here about the issues that matter to them in 2019. The number one issue that people wanted to talk to me about was Labor’s proposed retiree tax. Many seniors in the hinterland that I spoke to face losing a third of their retirement income if Bill Shorten gets the opportunity to impose this new tax. Local seniors are rightly proud of what they have achieved, and the ones I spoke to were gutted at what Bill Shorten proposes to do to them. I heard them loud and clear and in 2019 I will fight to stop Labor’s unfair and disastrous tax grab. You can help by signing my petition at andrewwallacemp.com.au/petitions.
Focus on Maleny The electorate of Fisher is a big place, stretching from Alexandra Headland, south to Beerburrum and west as far as Cambroon, but sometimes as a politician you have the opportunity to focus in on a particular town. In recent weeks I have been spending time in spectacular Maleny. On Australia Day I attended the Apex Big Breakfast and was privileged to take part in the citizenship ceremony at the showgrounds, where I enjoyed shaking hands with some of Maleny’s newest residents. During my Tour de Fisher, on the Wednesday, I held a listening post in Maleny, and on February 2 I was honoured to attend the Maleny RSL reunion luncheon. If you missed me at any of those events, then don’t worry. You will have many more chances. I am intending to hire the Maple Street Kiosk a number of times over the coming months to meet more locals and get their feedback. Please keep an eye on my Facebook page to find out when I will be there. Come down and say hello!
The Bruce Highway Last week I announced that the federal and state governments have come to a final agreement which will allow us to get under way on increasing the Bruce Highway to three lanes each way between Caboolture and Steve Irwin Way. This is delivering on more of the $3.13 billion commitment to the Bruce between the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane that the federal government has made since my election in 2016 and will help tens of thousands of hinterland residents get home sooner and safer. State Member for Glass House Gambling Community Benefit Fund recipients I always get excited when the recipients of each round of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund grants are announced because Glass House almost always fares well. Being the community of communities that we are, there is an abundance of community groups here, from RSLs, to sporting groups, to P&Cs, churches and community centres. I’m so proud to represent an electorate that is so community minded. The successful recipients from the fund’s round 98 in Glass House are: Glasshouse Country RSL Sub Branch Inc - $32,000 to upgrade its facility, The Old Witta School Community Centre Inc $13,987 to upgrade its facility and to purchase equipment, Woodford Agricultural, Pastoral and Industrial Association Inc - $33,199 to construct a shed, Woodford and Region Men’s Shed Inc $9280 to install a solar system Other Glasshouse Country recipients who also service our local area include: Landsborough Scout Group - $20,225 to install a shed and construct a Venturer room, The Glasshouse Country Horse and Pony Club Inc - $24,414 for facility upgrade, Beerwah Sportsground Management Committee Inc - $10,000 for facility upgrade. As always, these are such deserving recipients who I hope will truly benefit from their grants. To find out more information about Gambling Community Benefit Fund grants and to apply, visit justice.qld.gov.au/corporate/initiatives/communitygrants.
The wheels on the bus go round and round (at a cost)
Last week, I met with concerned parents and community members about the need for a school bus between Mooloolah Valley and Maleny State High School. The good news is, thanks to the efforts of Glasshouse Country Coaches, we finally have a service. Unfortunately, the state government will not subsidise this service. The government should, particularly given Mooloolah students fall in the Maleny SHS catchment and I again call on it to lend a hand by doing so. It is completely unacceptable to place students in a school catchment where there is no bus service available. Thank you to the parents and teachers who are giving up their own time to fight alongside me to get a dedicated bus and bus subsidy for our Mooloolah kids.

Division 5 - Sunshine Coast Happy New Year! We’ve started 2019 with energy and enthusiasm and I wish you all the very best for the year ahead. Australia Day awards
Heartfelt congratulations to Haylie Powell for her nomination in the sport and recreation category for the Australia Day awards. We were thrilled to have Haylie at the official opening of Mooloolah’s Skate Park in April 2018, and she’s a wonderful young representative for our district. I’m also Skateboarder Haylie incredibly pleased to congratulate our district’s Powell award winners: Evie Marshall (Young Citizen of the Year), endED (Community Group or Organisation Award) and Art on Cairncross (Creative Award). We are so proud to have you as our local heroes.
Palmwoods ceremonial planting at Palmwoods-Woombye Rd
Council joined forces with the PalmwoodsWoombye Rotary Club and adopted a street tree planting program. I was honoured to join the ladies on Friday, February 1 to plant a brush box, a beautiful evergreen native that will grow at the entrance point for this great local walking track. Well done everyone for this fantastic community initiative.
Brown snake warnings
There has been an increase in brown snake sightings across the coast and council is working hard to cut back greenery around pedestrian pathways, prune low lying trees and clear weeds to allow better vision. If you do see a snake, do not attempt to catch, kill or move the snake. Most snake bites are received when a snake feels threatened. Please contact a licensed snake catcher so they can safely move the snake.
Free mulch available
In need of mulch for landscaping? Council offers free coarse mulch with no maximum quantity limit through our waste facilities to all Sunshine Coast residential and commercial customers. If you need fine mulch or crushed concrete, those are available for purchase from the Buderim and Caloundra waste facilities. Visit council’s website for up-to-date availability times.

Australian Film Festival moved to March
By Sonia Clark Maleny Film Society organisers are excited to be planning this year’s Australian Film Festival, which has been moved from its traditional January date to March 8-10. Celebrating its 24th year, it promises to be the biggest and best festival yet with a great mix of free and ticketed sessions that will appeal to film buffs and general audiences alike. Festival organiser Andrew Wallace said moving the annual festival to March had been well received. In previous years when the festival was held to coincide with Australia Day there was little preparation time after the distractions of the festive season. “We also found that increasingly over the past few years people were becoming busier with Australia Day activities, so we didn’t want to compete with that. By moving the festival date to early March we could allow the focus to return to the festival and give plenty of lead time for our volunteers and advertisers, as well as a greater chance to attract interest from further afield,” Andrew said. The festival program kicks off on Friday, March 8 with the official launch party followed by the first of five specially selected feature films and an award winning short film. Saturday, March 9 features the inspiring documentary ‘Backtrack Boys’ followed by a meet and greet with representatives from the movie. This is followed by a free afternoon panel discussion and short film session featuring favourites from the 2018 Heart of Gold International Short Film Festival, which is held in Gympie each October. Pre-ordered Thai dinner will be available for those attending the evening session, followed by another award winning short film. Special guest speaker and emerging Australian film talent Alena Lodkina will then introduce her feature ’Strange Colours’. An early session on Sunday will be followed by a free film appreciation workshop. The final session will feature ‘Ladies in Black’. For ticketing information and to find out more about this fabulous immersive festival visit malenyfilmsociety.info.

How about coming to Probus?
Contributed by Norma McCormack The Probus Club of Glasshouse Mountains meets in the Beerwah Community Hall on the second Wednesday of each month while the fourth Wednesday is an outing. Our club does not fundraise, has low annual subscriptions and has no collection plate but we do have a lucky door prize. We have a short formal meeting followed by morning tea, after which a guest speaker joins us. They speak on a variety of topics that cater for a wide range of interests. Glasshouse Probus, while not unique, is unusual in that members bring a plate for a shared lunch. This allows for great fellowship as new members become old friends. Our outings are organised by a tour director who is always pleased to receive suggestions. If the outing is close by, we car pool. If further away a bus may be the go. Bus trips or expensive outings may be subsidised. Special interest groups include a book club, a music group and a dining out group. It would not be difficult to add other interest group to our list. Above all, Probus is a gathering of friends, active retirees from all walks of life, out to have fun. If you’re interested contact Norma on 5439 0446.

In the Garden At last the rains!
Well, good showers anyway. The recent rains are very welcome and have come at the right time. As you drive around the region, the lawns and gardens are launching back into life again. I’m sure everyone is being water-wise and doing the right things – such as mulching, treating water repellent soils with wetting products and cleaning out gutters and tanks. The rains also mean that pests and diseases are on the march. Watch out for fungal problems with your roses and leafy vegetables. Grasshoppers and caterpillars will be on the rampage soon too – so be vigilant and take action early. Don’t worry about the mushrooms and toadstools popping up in the lawn and garden mulch, as they’re not indicative of a serious problem and most are beneficial to the soil – just don’t eat any of them, as they’ll most likely be poisonous. Dogs can commonly be poisoned by mushrooms in the lawn, as they’ll eat or play with them. So it’s a good idea to pick them – wearing gloves, of course – and throw them into the compost or bin. The vegetable garden will need some attention as the organic content of the soil will most likely be less than it should be as the worms and micro-organisms break it down. So replenish with compost and mulch. If you think of it, put your potted plants growing inside or under cover outside in the rain. They’ll appreciate the gentle soaking and it’ll help expel ants and other bugs. Just watch that you don’t leave them in full sun where they can suffer from sunburn pretty quickly. At the end of the day, we can be thankful that we haven’t copped what they have had up north over the past couple of weeks. It must be devastating for people up there to have water do so much damage through their houses and businesses. And their gardens will definitely be suffering from way too much water. Plants with waterlogged roots can quickly ‘drown’ from lack of oxygen. Yes, plants need to take in oxygen from the soil via their roots, as well as them putting it out through their leaves.
Plant of the month
Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network
Saw sedge Gahnia aspera Saw sedge is a grass-like sedge found in drier sandy soils usually in semishaded areas or close to stream banks. Saw sedge is one of a number of Gahnia species found in the local area but it is also the smallest and I believe the most attractive. Unfortunately, it does have long green leaves with edges sharp enough to cut the skin, making it unsuitable for planting in an area frequented by young children. Otherwise this Gahnia is a suitable understory species that produces upright flowering spikes year around. The flower is followed by most attractive orange-red seeds. These were used as a food source by Indigenous people who pounded them to make flour. The seeds also provide food for birds, while the leaves are used by larvae of a number of butterflies.
Peachester Horticultural Society
Contributed by Patricia Bradford The first meeting for 2019 was held in the lovely garden of John and Suella Lanceley. Considering how hot and dry it had been, the garden was looking reasonably lush. Suella showed us an interesting selection of plants grown in their garden as living mulch along with some edible varieties. Results of the competition bench for November were Pam Innes first on 20 points, Patricia Bradford second on 13 points, Suella Lanceley third on nine points and John Innes fourth on four points. We all enjoyed wandering around the garden and talking about the different and variety of plants. The clumps of large bamboo were striking, especially the black stemmed one. Many thanks to Suella and John for opening their garden. The next meeting is on Thursday, February 21, 9.30am at the Peachester Hall. This is our AGM and John and Suella Lanceley in front of visitors are always welcome. this impressive black For more information phone 5496 9169. stemmed bamboo
Orchids take out awards
Contributed by Jenny Kelly After a bit of a break over the Christmas period, the Glasshouse Country Orchid Society has certainly come back with a bang. Congratulations must go to life members Italo and Noela Frizzo who submitted one of their bifoliate cattleyas for award consideration to the Australian Orchid Council and came away with not one but two awards. Noela and Italo have owned C. Deception Mosaic 'I & N' for eight years, growing it from a small seedling to this impressive size. This orchid is just one of a number of plants of this type grown by the Frizzos. Another impressive example, C. guttata 'Leopoldii', has canes a metre in length. A couple of weeks after having their cattleya awarded, the Frizzos picked up another gong for their Pinalia multiflora ' Glasshouse'. After such a great start to 2019, we can look forward to bigger and better things for our club. Our first meeting for the year will be held on Thursday, February 14 at the RSL hall in Glass House Mountains. Bring along your plants, or just yourself, ready for a 7.30pm start. There is an obvious wealth of knowledge in this club, which everyone is more than willing to share, so please come along on Thursday evening.

community which saw him appointed chancellor of the University of the Sunshine Coast in 2007. He was a driving force in the university’s development. In recognising his energy and leadership Fr Dobson was conferred an honorary doctorate in honour of his service in April 2018. But it was people and their journey that lay at the heart of Fr Dobson’s priesthood and his motivation for being involved in the great drama of life. As one of the eulogists at his memorial mass at Sacred Heart Church, Maleny, mused: “He used to say that one of the joys he had - in his very rewarding life - was his interaction with people and communities of his parish ... He said that one of the down sides of spending his life with us was that he had buried so many of his friends. At the end of 2012 Fr Dobson retired from active ministry but was always interested in what was going on in the lives of people. After a short illness he died at St Vincent’s Hospital on December 18. He was 73 years old. Recently members of the Catholic and wider communities gathered at Maleny to remember and celebrate his life. The communities of Glasshouse Country have truly lost a man of vision and a person of faith that bequeaths to us a practical foundation of what it means to be part of the community. Vale Father John Dobson For more than 30 years Fr John Dobson was a larger than life presence in our community. Arriving in the Caloundra parish, which included the church communities of Beerwah, Landsborough and Maleny, in 1982, Fr John (or “Dobbo as he was known) quickly integrated himself into all aspects of life in our community. Fr Dobson powerfully reminded the people that “they were the church and dared them to be creative in how they lived their faith. New initiatives were encouraged and lay leadership was promoted. These were years of excitement when it seemed that everything was happening within the parish and people were challenged to think beyond the present structures and the way things were always done. Those on the margins were never far from Fr Dobson’s awareness and concern. He had an affinity with those who had come off second best in life and was determined that the church would be a caring church where everyone was welcome and the dignity of each person was recognised and upheld. This concern inspired the establishment of Lavelly Lodge as a home for people with disabilities and saw much of Fr Dobson’s energy focus on the needs of the elderly within the community. Fr Dobson’s vision took him beyond the local Catholic community to reach out and work with other Christian communities in the area. The many ecumenical ventures culminated with Fr Dobson championing the establishment of Unity College. It was Fr Dobson’s active involvement in the

Contributed by David Hayes Welcome back to all members for what will be a huge year of bowls. The six-week break has been good but many things were still going on behind the scenes. So far we have had four rounds of Q7s and division 4 are undefeated. With five home games in a row starting this Saturday, things are looking promising. Division 5 won their first two games away but lost their last two. They also have five home games coming up starting this Saturday, so if you have time please come down to support them. The Gr8 bowls have been running for two weeks now. Our ladies’ division 5 team had a good first up win at home with the men going down away at Buderim. The second round saw our men have a win against Bribie but the ladies went down to Caloundra. When picking teams, selectors do have one eye on the future so our club is strong for years to come. Wednesday, February 6: Ladies day - Noelle Dean, John Aitken and Bruce Angus defeated Maz Idle, Brian Squires and Dennis Hume 24-16. Noelene Annakin, Graham Meyers and Di Hume defeated Marilyn Boulton, Lee Meyers and Joy Reason 20-13. Millie Freshwater, Debbie Sawtell (v) and Chris Dougan defeated Sally Squires, Lyn Griffiths and Jack Timm 21-18. Jenny Hobson and Rob Scullion defeated Viv James and John Annakin 26-11. Thursday, February 7: Social, open pairs - winners of the day were Wendy Platt and Rodney Sharpe with two wins +10 margin. Runners up, winners of the losers were Jenny Hobson and Di Garland with +16 margin in the second game. Please be aware that from now on if both players are not present you will not win the lucky draw after the game. Don’t forget green fees are now $13. The men’s championship fours nominations are open and we are looking for as many teams as possible. If you would like a game but have no team, write your name up on the sheet at the club so people know. Kerry Capern Memorial Day is the first Sunday in March. It will be an open fours with a cost of $30 per person. For more information please enquire at the club or to Bill Tumbridge. It should be a great day so get your teams organised now.
Beerwah Ladies Golf Club Contributed by Brenda Briese We had a few welcome showers recently but a few more would be lovely - although perhaps we should be careful what we wish for. Our hearts and thoughts go out to all the people affected by the floods up north, particularly the graziers. Saturday, February 2 was a stableford competition with 27 ladies, a good field for a Saturday. The winner, with a fabulous score of 39 points, was Barbara McIntosh, runner up was Vanessa Aland on 35 points. NTPs: 2 - Andrea Campbell, 5 - Jo Malone, 16 - Sue Woolway, 18 - Sonia Kenway (second shot). Ball run down to 32 points. Thursday, February 7 was a stroke round with a field of 42 players in two divisions. Division one winner was Fay Barry 76 nett on a count back from Sonia Kenway 76 nett. Division two winner was Lorraine Dillon on 79 nett from Karen Madsen on 80 nett. NTPs: 2 - Cheryl Jepson, 5 - Mavis Brimelow, 16 - Monica Dangerfield and 18 - Sonia Kenway (second shot). Ball run down to 84 nett. I think the scores reflect the hot conditions on the day.

Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Graeme Glover The welcome wet weather last week made bowls difficult on the hinterland. Two teams travelled to represent the club at the monthly Mapleton pairs. Congratulations to Jim Wiedman, Joe Waters, Miles Allen and Graeme Glover on their efforts at this away fixture. Our team for Wednesday at Kilcoy had a washout thanks to the much needed rain. The weather last Wednesday saw the rink take on the appearance of a swimming pool. This unfortunately made play impossible Wednesday evening. Miles Allen has the draw ready for our competition start. New players welcome and everyone gets a game. A break in the showers on Friday was enough to get some bowls starved folks on the green. Well done to the winners Kathy King, Dave Edwards and Wendy Bulger. Some great bowls played as folks adjusted to the wet track. Jim King and Ian Dickson showed good form and were rewarded with some maximum end scores. John Long showed more winning form in the clubhouse with the members draw as did Kay Gesch. A reminder to all, don’t forget to come to the club for the members draw and enjoy the company of fellow members and guests. See you all at the annual general meeting this Saturday. All positions for the 2019 board have been filled. Thanks to those who are either continuing or will be a new board member. 2019 will be another great year for MBC.

The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker On Thursday, January 31 Donna Manning and Helen Andrews went down to Kath Smith and Nick Cram in a tight game 8-9. Gillian Bradley and Ken Barker were neck and neck with Vince Carbery and Bev Sockhill when Vince and Gillian left whereupon Ken executed a nice break and the final result was 18–11. Vince and Nick played an entertaining game on Sunday, February 3 with Nick getting away to a very good start to place himself in a winning position. Vince fought back with a couple of fine turns, including a spectacular peel and hoop on hoop four. Nick tidied up to record a good win 26–11. Vince coached Bev in Thursday’s game (pictured). Vince is indicating to Bev where she should place her black ball to get good position on the yellow ball to help her make hoop three. The trendy colours of his mallet grip inspired her to
place the ball, which can be seen heading to the desired position, perfectly. Eighteen players from Range Care visited the lawn on Tuesday morning and, in stunning conditions, had a very pleasant time. Play days on the picturesque lawns at the bottom of the showground are 2.10 pm for 2.30 pm on Thursdays and Sundays. For details contact president Vince Carbery on 5494 2193, or secretary Priscilla Vickers on 5494 3555.

Pine Sports Club welcomed The Green Machine for our last pre-season friendly before the 2019 Sunshine Coast McDonalds Premier League Season kicks off in three weeks. Goals from Jesse Quin, Jordan Wust, Matt Kennedy and a Cameron Nairn brace helped The Green Machine to a 5-2 win, including an impressive first team debut for Zac Fisher. Congratulations Zac! First team coach Daniel Carew was thrilled with his team’s five star performance. “I'm extremely
delighted after that performance, scoring five goals is great but the manner we did was exciting,” Daniel said. “That's the level we'll be at in just under three weeks as we prepare for Coolum first up.” Junior and mini roos can sign up any time online up to April, but hurry as teams are filling up quickly. Just for Laughs Total confidence
A group of engineering professors is invited to fly in a plane. Right after they are comfortably seated, they are informed the plane was built by their students. All but one gets up and heads frantically to the exits in a panic. The one lone professor who calmly stayed put in his seat, is asked: "Why did you stay put?" "I have plenty of confidence in my students. Knowing them, I for a fact can assure you this plane will never even start."
Your Stars ARIES March 21 - April 20 Keep your lines of communication open as it will help get you out of a set of problems that may come up this week. Take note that being mentally organised is a good start. Be careful what you may put in writing and focus on your accuracy, since you are libel to miss a communication. Remember Valentine’s Day now! TAURUS April 21 – May 21 Mars enters your sign bringing you a whole lot of extra physical energy, drive and determination to secure that great Valentine’s gift. Add exercise and sports for your stress outlet and try not to be too stubborn! Old habit patterns, probably from early childhood, are behind some of your reactions now. Some support arrives. GEMINI May 22 - June 23 Your rosy view of someone, or the future, may not be justified. If something seems promising it might be best to be a little sceptical. Better still, maybe just get it in writing! Urgent matters through this weekend are quickly settled, especially remembering loved ones for Valentine’s Day. There is a new acquisition among your objectives. CANCER June 24 - July 22 Remember that as you are a sensitive lover Valentine’s greeting cards are always personal when they come from close friends. As Mars enters the sign of Taurus it spends a week or so in your extra special social outings. There is the possibility of a private meeting behind the scenes over the weekend. Cosy comforts with friends.

What the?
A guy walks into a bar and takes a seat. Before he can order, the bowl of pretzels in front of him says: "Hey, you're a handsome fellow". The man tries to ignore the bowl of pretzels and orders an apple cider. The bowl of pretzels then says: "Ooooh, an apple cider, great choice. You're a smart man". Starting to freak out, the guy says to the bartender: "Hey what the hell, this bowl of pretzels keeps saying nice things to me!" The bartender replies: "Don't worry about it, the pretzels are complimentary".
LEO July 23 – August 22 Communication with Valentine’s Day can be tricky, or complicated. In spite of any problems look for common ground and be wary of any big contracts that are too good to be true! The weekend sees good days to attend to family and property interests. No need now to procrastinate about some obligation or important task. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 You are very happy this week as you resonate to the Full Moon in Taurus. There is still an unexpected move that can make you want to spend considerable funds. As mighty Mars also enters the practical down to earth Taurus sign, this all adds up to pumping you with physical energy and a drive to accomplish all material issues. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 Spending can be a problem as you would like to receive a very special Valentine’s day gift for your partner. The weekend sees you kept busy in your vocation, business affairs and various other outside activities. Most will be very productive. You have no reason to feel bored as there is a freespirited adventurous vibe now. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 You finish with the upheaval of the previous few days and as usual you find your words stinging and destabilising others. It is suggested you avoid gossipers and complainers! The planet Mars enters the determined sign of Taurus, stirring up relationship activity. This is actually acceptable if it is used for any sporting interests.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 With Mars entering the part of your chart for lots of fun over Valentine’s Day it is suggested that you get your thinking cap on so as to prompt more cooperation. With your family and associates, open up a discussion about alterations to home, security, family and financial interests. Being outspoken is a blessing for you. CAPRICORN December 23 - 19 January 19 With Mars entering the practical powerful energy of Taurus on Valentine’s Day stay focused on avoiding bumps and bruises if you suddenly go to a theme park. Your energy looks at chocolates, lovingly, but the weekend says you should stem your enthusiasm for high sugar products and go for soft lunches or wild seafood salads. AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 New ideas, your own as well as others, burst upon the scene. It is fun when they are big, bright and bold, and seem potentially life altering. It is a fun time with Valentine’s Day and with the planet Mars strengthening your resolve, you will be selfmotivated to tackle any jobs that you would like to do. Embrace innovations. PISCES February 20 - March 20 You are drawn into social activities with friends who wish to join you. Stay balanced about spending your financial resources as it is better to watch games than play poker machines. With Mars entering the sign of Taurus that goes very well for enjoying seafood products. Is 2019 your year to SHINE? Smile bright with Dental Excel.... Dr David Marley Dr David Marley has 45 years of extensive experience and has developed a great interest in restorative dentistry and full mouth rehabilitation as well as great belief in the benefits of cosmetic dentistry. “I always believe that a healthy mouth and an attractive smile are a great asset which should be nurtured and valued. Healthy teeth are acknowledged to have a great part to play in
supporting good general health,” David says. David still keeps up to date with new innovations in his field such as his experience with surgical implants. He enjoys sharing this professional knowledge with his patients to assist improving quality of life for all. David said their aim is to provide a comprehensive service to the local community for many years to come.
Dr Finbarr O’Sullivan Dr Finbarr O’Sullivan (BDS) originally qualified in Liverpool in the UK back in 2005. He gained two years experience with the UK’s National Health Service before spending four years in private practice in Ireland. He has a particular interest in and enthusiasm for dental implants; both to replace missing teeth and to retain those
annoying loose dentures. He believes that the huge leaps in technology during recent times have changed the level of treatment on offer. Finbarr also holds a postgraduate certificate in cosmetic restorative dentistry (UK) which gives him the added expertise when restoring a beautiful smile.
Dr Tiffany Chan Dr Tiffany Chan qualified as a dentist at the University of Liverpool UK in 2010 and upon graduating, she went on to work in the Community Dental Service through the National Health Service where she treated many patients with dental phobia, children and special needs patients. This experience enhanced her people skills in putting
people at ease in the dental surgery. She is gentle, great with children and those who just really hate going to the dentist! Tiffany has a great interest in extractions and wisdom teeth removal and has completed an intensive oral surgery course with maxillofacial surgeons in Cambodia.
Dr Shirly Atia Dr Shirly Atia completed her Dental Hygiene Degree in Canada and worked as a dental hygienist for seven years before completing a Bachelor of Dental Surgery at James Cook University in Cairns. She has completed her general practice residency in Queensland Health providing dental care to Indigenous communities.
Shirly is extremely passionate about preventive dentistry but enjoys all areas of dentistry including fillings, crown and bridge, esthetic dentistry and root canals. Shirly ensures all her patients receive the best possible treatment and is committed to providing high quality dentistry in a warm, gentle and welcoming environment.
Dr Raj Kengaiha Dr Raj Kengaiha was originally educated in India and completed his dental degree at the prestigious Bangalore University in 1997, followed by working busy dental practices in India before moving with his family to Australia in 2013. Although interested in all aspects of dentistry, Raj has particular passions for endodontic (root canal treatment) and
orthodontic (braces). He is doing additional training in orthodontics, participating in a Mini Residency which formed part of his Excellence of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics (EODO) training. Raj has recently gained accreditation to provide Fastbraces orthodontic treatment – both simple and advanced.
