Hi Everyone... Some weeks it is just trickier than others to juggle all of the different things that are happening locally with those glamorous everyday commitments of life, you know, like work, grocery shopping and dentist’s appointments. However, there are some things that you should just prioritise and I reckon the free session that Supa IGA at Maleny have on offer that sees 4 Ingredients author Kim McCosker come back to Maleny for a free one-hour workshop is one of these. Yes, and not just because you get to try all of the tasty menu items that Kim will be producing, but also because it is all about recipes that are quick, easy and can be made in one pot! So, investing one hour now is going to make life so much easier down the track and reduce the amount of time you have to spend in the kitchen at the end of a busy day. Having been to one of Kim’s workshops before, the other great thing is she is a real entertainer – so you learn and have fun… who knew this was possible? Check out the full details about the workshop in our Things 2 Do section on page 33.

Local News Is it full steam ahead for rail duplication? Ahead of Tuesday night’s State Government budget, Deputy Premier and Treasurer Jackie Trad has announced $160.8 million in funding for the Beerburrum to Nambour Upgrade which would involve duplication of about 20 kilometres of North Coast Line between Beerburrum and Landsborough. Ms Trad said this funding will allow the project to get underway immediately. “This project wouldn’t be able to happen if the Palaszczuk Government hadn’t kickstarted it by doing the business case and submitting to Infrastructure Australia last year,” Ms Trad said. Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said Infrastructure Australia had given a favourable assessment of the business case for the upgrade, recognising it as a priority project. “While we welcome the Turnbull Government’s recent funding announcement for this project, it’s important to note they have not contributed their fair share under the National Land Transport Network agreement,” Mr Bailey said. “Despite the fact that the federal LNP Government amended the National Land Transport Network to include the Beerburrum to Nambour rail line, so far they have only offered funding on a 50:50 basis. Ironically, the rail line runs adjacent to the Bruce Highway, which receives 80:20 funding. “With the current funding on the table for this project totalling more than $550 million, detailed
design work can get underway now, to be followed by the commencement of construction. “There’s no reason why work can’t start on this now while we continue to negotiate with the Turnbull Government to get Queensland’s fair share. We just need Malcolm Turnbull to get the funding flowing now.” Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson has welcomed the Queensland Government’s announcement that it will include $160.8 million towards the $780 million upgrade of the North Coast Rail Line, but has questioned key elements of the commitment. “I am concerned there is no timing specified around when the funding will be available and – importantly – that it falls short of the $390 million that is required to match what the Commonwealth has already committed. “This commitment may be enough to get the ball rolling, but quite simply, the residents of the Sunshine Coast expect that the project will be delivered in full and want to know when it will be delivered.” The Mayor has questioned the State’s claims that because the North Coast Rail Line is part of the National Land Transport Network, it should be funded on a 80:20 basis between the Federal and State Governments. “This 80:20 formula has been applied to national highways like the Bruce Highway. The North Coast Rail Line is State owned infrastructure,” Mayor Jamieson said.

At the Saturday community forum meeting regarding the 37 Maleny Street, Landsborough proposal, Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski announced to the crowd that Sunshine Coast Council had, the day before, sent the developer a 24-page letter detailing issues and problems which they have found with the development application. Cr Baberowski termed the extensive list of almost 100 issues and sub-issues, as a substantial piece of work by the council development assessment unit that highlights how seriously council has considered this development. “Council have requested the developer provide further information on a range of issues, some of which relate to areas such as front setback, density, site cover, pedestrian access, character, heritage and scenic amenity, subtropical climate design, private open space, vegetation, fauna management, landscaping, and a raft of engineering and environmental health issues,” reported Cr Baberowski. “The developer has three months from the date of the information request (June 8) to provide the extra details otherwise council will assess the application as provided.” The list of items considered as either noncompliant or inadequate is wide-ranging. One key issue of relevance at the community forum relates to the stated density of dwellings. Council has identified that the proposal equates to 61.9 equivalent dwelling units (EDU) per hectare, which is well above the developer stated 41EDU per hectare and exceeds the code allowable of 30-50EDU.
Council has requested that the developer revise the plans to bring it down to a scale and intensity that complies with the Medium density residential zone code. It is unclear how this will be achieved without reducing the number of units being proposed. When contacted, the developer, Simon Greye of 37 Maleny Street Pty Ltd, said that he and the town planning consultants will now carefully go through the information request. Asked whether, in light of the scale of the information request, they will consider withdrawing the application, Mr Greye said that isn’t the case. “This level of scrutiny isn’t unusual in a development of this type,” he said. “I’m committed to delivering a project which will be of significant social benefit to the Landsborough community and to sections of our community who are struggling with the effects of housing affordability. “I can say we’ll be looking at what council have raised very carefully. We are open to making amendments to the proposals including redesigns of the plans if needed. “At the end of the day, I’ll be retaining ownership of this development and managing it as an ongoing concern. So I too want to make sure that the end result fits in with what the vision and planning is for Landsborough, and in doing so providing accommodation options for people who need our support.” Mr Greye said that they would be making their response to council within the three month timeframe.

Community rally over Landsborough development After weeks of uncertainty and conjecture, Landsborough came together last week to hear more about the proposed medium density residential development at 37 Maleny Street and how it may affect them and the town as a whole. Following on from a community delegation meeting with the developer, an open forum was held on Saturday at the Landsborough Hall, coordinated through the Landsborough Area Community Association (LACA). With almost 100 locals attending, LACA representative Ken Husband and a number of concerned Landsborough residents summarised what the development entails, what the developer communicated to them at the delegation meeting and what their unresolved issues are regarding the development. “We’re not against development on the site,” said Ken, commenting on the multi-unit and rooming accommodation plans for the 4,700 sq.m block on the corner of Maleny Street and Gympie Street South. “We’re not against the provision of affordable housing. As a community social support organisation, this is something we support. “Landsborough needs growth, but it needs to be in character with the town and add to the heritage values. “As far as we can see, this intensity of development on this site is not in keeping with what we’d expect. “We didn’t envisage something on this scale when we originally worked with council and the
Landsborough community in formulating the Landsborough Local Area Plan. “We commend the developer for looking to provide affordable housing in our town, but we think that there are other similarly zoned blocks nearby which would be far more suitably located.” In the discussions that followed, the consensus was that people are uneasy with the potential high density of living which could result from the current development plans. It appears from an analysis of the architectural plans, that each of the two and threebedroom units could become shared ‘rooming’ accommodation as each bedroom has its own, or access to its own, ensuite bathroom. As an ex-real estate participant stated: “If these are supposed to be separate units, I’ve never seen plans where each bedroom has its own ensuite. I’d be very suspicious of the intent of what the developer is trying to do here.” The inadequacy of parking was also a major concern, with only 32 car parking spaces included, which the developer considers as adequate, according to the feedback he gave at the delegation meeting. But with potentially 100 people or more living at the facility, the community forum definitely thought otherwise. “With this many people living individually in the rooms, there’s going to be a lot more than 32 cars, with cars parking up and down Gympie Street South,” said one resident.

With a number of inconsistencies identified at the meeting between the development and what the planning codes require, local development watcher John Weekes highlighted that a major critical flaw was that the application plans stated that the development provides an equivalent of 41 dwellings per hectare, whereas John has calculated – and has had it confirmed by council’s planning staff – that the actual density is more like 62 dwellings per hectare. If this is correct, it would push the development into the high density bracket, making it noncompliant with the planning regulations. The forum organisers are asking for locals across the region to support their objection to the development as it stands by signing a petition, emailing Divisional Councillor Rick Baberowski, and making a submission through council’s development website (www.pdonline.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au – reference MCU18/0085). The petition is available for signing at Landsborough Newsagency, Bucks Bakery and at Morris House on Old Landsborough Road.

Sunshine Coast Council has approved four of the six recent applications from NBN to construct wireless broadband towers locally – Sinclairs Lane, Balmoral Ridge; Appaloosa Drive, Conondale; Link Road, Glass House Mountains; and Red Road, Beerburrum. Despite attracting 361 community submissions, almost all against the towers, council deemed the new towers to be consistent with the objectives of the planning scheme. The application lodged for a NBN tower at Burgess Avenue in Maleny has been refused by council, citing multiple conflicts with the Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme, and that “the proposal has not demonstrated any other relevant matter (planning need) to justify or override the identified conflicts”. This application attracted 73 submissions in total, with 69 being deemed to have been ‘properly made’ and all of them against the tower at that site. NBN stated in their planning submission that “Each fixed wireless facility is connected to another to form a chain of facilities that link back to the NBN fibre network. Although fixed wireless facilities are submitted to council as standalone developments from a planning perspective, they are highly interdependent.” NBN also submitted to council that although 24 sites were identified as possible locations, only one landholder agreed to have a tower located on their property.

As a result, NBN suggested that there are no other sites suitable in that locality. As a result of the Burgess Avenue refusal, the fate of the wireless broadband network across the Range may be in chaos, as NBN has repeatedly said that the interconnectivity relies on all towers being approved. NBN now has the option to either accept the council’s decision or appeal the decision through the Planning and Environment Court, as they successfully did in 2017 for a number of tower applications council similarly refused. NBN was contacted for their comments on council’s application refusal and whether they would be appealing the decision, however no response was provided before the print deadline. The remaining application for a tower at Peachester is yet to be determined, with a deadline of July 19 for the decision to be made. Division1 Councillor Rick Baberowski has confirmed that he intends to call the application up to be debated and decided at a full council ordinary meeting in the near future. In their planning application documents, NBN has disclosed that they would be making further application for additional towers across the Glasshouse Country and Blackall Ranges to complete their network of facilities. GC&M News will report on these as soon as they are lodged with council.

It’s an honour
Joyce and Greg Newton moved to Maleny in 1974, and since that time Joyce has contributed much to the local community which this week has been officially recognised with an Order of Australia Medal, presented in her home by Governor Paul de Jersey AC. Joyce described the experience as a very humbling honour and, while she never sought nor wanted this kind of recognition, she was happy to receive it on behalf of the hundreds of community members who have worked tirelessly to make the Maleny community a better place to live. No one person can achieve much entirely on their own and Joyce has always had the pleasure of working with a great team of people who she describes as becoming lifelong friends. Throughout Joyce’s life her greatest passion has been for education and working at two local schools. In the early years of being in Maleny she taught maths and science at the Maleny Secondary Department; and later after her four children arrived on the scene, she worked as a relief teacher at the new high school. She also ran the tuckshop auxiliary at the primary school for several years and sat on both schools’ P&C executives as Secretary and later as President. Before completing a Masters in Educational Counselling, Joyce was proud to be able to bring some new initiatives into practice, in particular being involved in setting up of the ‘Responsible Thinking Classroom’ at the high school.

Governor of Queensland Paul de Jersey with Joyce Newton She feels fortunate to have been involved in a number of important community activities from building a school/community swimming pool and keeping it running in the black, restarting the Maleny Community Kindergarten, running the blood bank at the hospital, keeping the Maleny Guides and Playgroup going, building an Indoor Activity Centre at the high school, setting up our local Hospital Auxiliary, overseeing the soccer club transition from Churches to Maleny Rangers Soccer Club, to sitting on the Advisory Group of the Maleny Community Precinct. In 1999 Joyce was the recipient of Caloundra City Council’s Citizen of the Year Award and in 2016 she also received an Australia Day Award, for sport and recreation on the Sunshine Coast. Her hard work and dedication have also seen her made Life Member of the many clubs and organisations she has been involved with. As a humble recipient of the recent honour, Joyce takes pride in looking back at what the Maleny community has accomplished.

Business News Glassies provide great feedback By Lea Parkes Our local townships are made up of many small businesses, whose owners and staff work hard to provide our communities with the range of products and services they require. In the challenging economic climate of today being in small business is definitely not easy, but being at the recent Gala Event for our Glass House Small Business Awards it was great to hear first-hand so much positive feedback about our local businesses. This week we are including some of the comments made about the Bronze and Silver Business and Employee winners from the Glass House area.

Festival organisers are thrilled that ABC RN’s literary commentator Kate Evans returns to Maleny for the festival running from July 13-15. On the Friday night, July 13, Kate opens the festival in conversation with Bri Lee, a powerful new literary voice and author of her new memoir ‘Eggshell Skull’. On Saturday, Kate will MC ‘Poetry on the Precinct’, a free event featuring five poets including MTC Cronin and Angela Gardner, both internationally acclaimed poets. And on Sunday morning, July 15, Kate leads a conversation with award-winning journalist and author Trent Dalton, Stella Prize shortlisted author Mirandi Riwoe, and Brisbanebased author Sally Piper at the festival’s signature event, ‘Sunday Morning Talking Writing’. There’s plenty for kids too, with everything from a Pyjama Party on Friday night and dress-up Storytime Party on Saturday morning, both at the Maleny Library, to creative writing and illustration workshops for budding young authors on Saturday afternoon. There’s also a poetry workshop and the Big Book Club will tackle the multi award-winning ‘The Trauma Cleaner’, a Bumper Book Sale, illustration displays, and a book folding workshop. For bookings and further details, head to the website: www.celebrationofbooksmaleny.com.
Church celebrates 60th anniversary The Landsborough Seventh-day Adventist Church first met in in 1948 in a pineapple packing shed and in members’ homes. By 1950 the membership had increased to 19 and the company moved to the Landsborough School of Arts Memorial Hall. In 1958 the group built their own church and this month they will be celebrating 60 years since its official opening on June 22, 1958 by the then Queensland Premier G.F. Nicklin. Land for construction of the church was purchased in 1956 and building commenced the following year. The total cost of the building was 1,438 pounds. Due to an increasing church membership, plans were drawn up to extend the church building and to modernise the facility in 1994. These completed extensions and renovations were officially opened the following year on October 7. Today the church membership is around 180. Plans are currently in place to refurbish and expand the church again. Landsborough Seventh-day Adventist Church
is a family-oriented church and it caters for all age groups. It continues to be active in the community, working closely with Morris House Neighbourhood Centre as well as the local school chaplaincy group. The church is involved in a range of community activities from health and lifestyle programs through to helping needy families and providing free community lunches each month. In his official opening address in 1958 Premier Nicklin stated that, “Faith in God is essential to anyone professing Christianity. Faith in God gives meaning and purpose to life and if we do not have that faith, our lives would not be as full and rich as we would like them to be.” Members of the community are invited to join in the church’s 60th anniversary celebrations from 10am on Saturday June 23 at 27 Maleny Street, Landsborough followed by a free community lunch at 12.30pm. For further information contact Lachlan on 0474 820 920 or visit www.landsborough.org or follow on Facebook: Landsborough Adventist Church.

Yarnbombing isn't for the faint hearted and crochet isn't just for grannies and Maleny will have plenty of great examples at this year’s Knitfest – Yarn & Fibre Arts Festival which is on Saturday and Sunday, June 30 and July 1. Knitfest Yarnbombers are the ultimate Queens of Recycling, taking donations of unwanted yarn, unfinished projects and yarn from deceased estates to repurpose it into amazing fibre art creations decorating the main street of Maleny. There's nothing these girls won't decorate. Yarnbombing is a very recent art form of decorating inanimate objects with yarn, and a highlight of this year’s event is a the yarnbombing of a BMW car. There are 30 workshops to choose from this year from Brioche knitting and basket weaving through to avocado skin dyeing, enticing you to get off the couch and try a new craft. You can buy anything from raw fleece, crochet hooks and hand spun wool through to stunning hand knits at the 55 trade stalls. You can also ride the free bus around the Festival Precinct to see the Tree Cosy Competition and down to the Showgrounds for the Alpaca Fleece Show. The Brisbane Astronomers are hosting a Stargazing night to coincide with this year's
Debs Swain's BMW's first fitting. Work in progress - Crystal Sheumack, Debs Swain, Colin Kielly, Judy Caesar, Lindel Kielly and Barbara Ross theme, ‘Outer Space / Sci-Fi’ as part of the event. People will be able to see Saturn, Jupiter, Mars and Venus through their huge telescopes on the night at the Maleny Golf Club. Maleny is known for its dark sky at night so bookings are essential. To book a workshop, a Suitcase Market site, enter one of the competitions or sell your craft, please book online at www.knitfest.com.au.

Produce, presentations and poultry
By Jade King
First time entrant in the Maleny Show Poultry division, Paige Richard-Williamson, came away with a First Prize in the Light Sussex division with her pet rooster “Isaac” and a third overall in the Junior division. Paige – and Isaac the rooster – had a great time, and she thinks all local kids should enter their pet chickens and roosters next year (if they don’t mind giving them a bath). Thank you to the judges and all the locals that work behind the scenes to make a great day.
Glasshouse Christian College had a massive weekend at the Maleny Show. GCC students were huge winners in three different categories – Produce, Presentations and Poultry! In Produce, they took out Grand Champion in the Fruit Collection along with nine first places, nine second places and three third places in the Produce section. The Year 10 students’ camembert, which was made from scratch, achieved one second and three third prizes. GCC Hospitality students also did wonders, winning second prize for their Beetroot Relish in the highly contested preserves section. However, the biggest win would have to be the combined Agricultural Science, Hospitality and Kitchen Garden entry that saw everyone working together
to create an amazing display that represented the college brilliantly. Hospitality and Agricultural Science students presented incredibly well at the Maleny Small Farmers Tent at the show. Keeley and Lachlan demonstrated the art of making all Australian Scones that were absolutely delicious, and Kate, Jess and Claire talked about agricultural technology use on the farm. All students should be congratulated for their hard work and excellent presentation. GCC students also got in among the poultry judging at the show and put their skills to the test to try and judge the very best of Rhode Island hens. Judge Geoff Robinson was incredibly informative and has kindly offered to assist with the future Agricultural Science poultry flock.

There are a number of changes occurring within the world of finance; changes that affect first home buyers right through to savvy investors. First home buyers will be influenced by the reduction in the Queensland first home buyers’ grant boost. The first home buyers’ Josh Carleton SMS Finance grant is a state-based grant of $15,000 to put towards the construction or newly built home purchase. An additional $5,000 First Home Owner boost has been available for the last 18 months, increasing the total grants available to $20,000. This boost is due to cease June 30, meaning first home buyers need to come up with an additional $5,000 in some cases. The Royal Commission into the Finance Sector has caused lending time frames for assessment of applications to be extended. Additional information that would not normally be required for a specific lender has now become standard practice. This includes evidence of bank statement history to verify living expenses and confirm liabilities declared by applicants. A simple $100 regular transaction can impact borrowing capacity and influence the outcome of the applicant's ability to meet their goals. Talk of interest rate increases and the fact that we are at the all-time low for interest rates continues to be a major talking piece in the sector (even with the recent RBA announcement for rates to stay on hold), so the common prediction is that we will have at least one rate rise by the end of this year. How this will affect the average homeowner is yet to be seen. With all this going on the outlook is still positive. Some lenders are willing to lend more specifically for first home buyers which will help first home buyers even after the reduction in the grant. Early preparation in reviewing applicants’ borrowing capacity and obtaining pre-approval ensures a smooth process in achieving the applicants’ goals. Interest rate rises in a strong stable economy will not be another global financial crisis. Borrowers are aware of interest rates with many taking this opportunity to pay down debt while rates are low and others securing a fixed rate to give them security of their repayments going forward.

You Said It Isn’t it time?
A mother approached me. She has a son who has paranoid schizophrenia. They have put in place a red order, so if he goes and gets medication it alerts the chemist – but this is only in his local area, if he goes to the next suburb no red alert shows. His mum wants a national register for mental illness. The son has been arrested because when he goes off his medication he becomes violent and also overdoses and has to go to hospital. When he is well he is sent home and it all starts again. His mum is at wits’ end. We want to give people independence but where do you draw the line? This young man is a mental health issue not a criminal. It seems all political parties put this in the too hard basket. Isn’t it time we started to help people? Julie Savage Beerwah
Re: Roys Road
I totally agree with D West’s letter in GC&M News, June 5 edition – the intersection along Roys Road at Beerwah is a joke. The council depot is closed between 6pm and 6am as well as being closed on weekends and public holidays. I know council will not change this speed limit, but surely it could be similar to School Zones, where outside of Council Works Depot hours it could go back to 80km/h. Food for thought, but knowing our council, it will probably cost too much to replace some speed signs. Especially after the debacle on the BeerburrumWoodford Road when, after resealing a portion of this road, they paid line markers to paint double barrier lines and then three months later had them removed, at ratepayers’ expense, to the actual passing line marking that was there in the first place! Re: Where is our kindness?
In response to the letter regarding the proposed Landsborough development in GC&M News, June 6 edition: I think you should go the extra step and provide a roof over the head for some of the people you're talking about. I think they'd appreciate your hospitality greatly! I for one think my taxes fund more than enough empathy and sympathy for those less fortunate than myself, even though I worked extremely hard for what I have. As for refugees, that may I suggest are mainly undeserving economic "refugees", I agree we should look after our own before extending our generosity to others. I don't call that being shallow, but it is simple common sense and as for the "benefits" you listed within your letter for Landsborough, I'd much rather my taxes cut with the reduction of overseas aid, the huge outlay and strain of taking in refugees, which would allow me to spend more money at local businesses. After all, if the population of these countries can't get their act together why should it be Australians or any other country’s problem? I also noted that you're from Beerwah too and not Landsborough, so it's not your town! Damon Robinson Maleny
Dog park at Mapleton
A fenced, off leash dog park was proposed for the Mapleton Lilyponds Park area in the Sunshine Coast Council Landscape Masterplan in 2003. Objections from neighbouring properties made the selected site unsuitable. Mapleton dog owners (250 dogs registered for Mapleton), however are still anxious to have the Dog Park on any suitable council land in the Mapleton area. Off leash dog parks permit dogs to freely socialise in neutral territory. Also, as there are many
SEND TO: editorial@gcnews.com.au PO Box 99, Beerwah 4519
elderly people living alone with just their dog for a companion, a dog park provides them with an outing and social contact and support from other dog owners. The dog park would therefore need to be within easy walking distance within Mapleton so our elderly dog lovers can use it. Over the years several sites have been proposed by our various Division 10 councillors, but nothing has happened in the 15 years since the Masterplan. I have taken it upon myself to push this project through, with the help of a small group of volunteers. We have support from over 150 dog owners from the district so far. To gain the attention of Sunshine Coast Council we need more dog owners to register their interest with us. We would be grateful of the support of those within about 40km from Mapleton. They can email us, or join our Facebook group, and we will keep them up-to-date about progress and any group activities. Our group email contact is mapletonneedsadogpark@gmail.com. Our Facebook group is Mapleton Needs a Dog Park. Supporters can also email Division 10 Councillor Greg Rogerson, who is helping us with this project at Greg. Rogerson@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and confirm their desire for council to expedite the provision of a fenced, off leash dog park for Mapleton. Hank Wade Mapleton

Kindy kids dig didge
The children at Beerwah Kindergarten learned some valuable life lessons while also having a lot of fun when Jason Morris visited last week. The founder of ‘Didge for Kids’ and ‘The Dude That’s Different’ is an amputee and motivational speaker who shares his lived experience of losing a hand in an industrial accident at the age of 19 and the day-to-day obstacles he had to overcome through persistence and determination, which fit perfectly with the Kindy’s motto, ‘I can do it, I will try’. His insight helped the children develop some understanding of what it might be like to have a disability while also how important it is to be accepting of everyone in our community and never to tease those who look different. With his wisdom imparted, Jason then pulled out his didgeridoo and explained how they are created by termites and how they are an important instrument in Indigenous Australian culture. Numeracy is colourful and fun
Contributed by Lyn Rayner In order to attain strength in numeracy at Peachester State School, the school has a weekly Maths Fiesta Activity which involves an open ended mathematical challenge that is presented to the whole school community through posters around the school and through the school Facebook page. Activities are designed so all age groups can work on the problem. Students are encouraged to work with their families to discuss the problem and consider how it can be solved. The problems are designed so students make real world connections and understand that mathematical skills not only assist them at school but can be used beyond the classroom and into the future. The aim of the Maths Fiesta is to build student confidence in mathematics and connect mathematics to the real world and, importantly, to promote the fact that maths can be fun! Celebrating reading
Contributed by Michelle Taylor Reading Committee Co-ordinator Reading was put in the spotlight last month at Glass House Mountains State School, with the school celebrating and participating in some special reading events. During May all students from Prep to Year 6 registered for the ‘Read More in May Challenge’. Students kept a log of their reading and will have an opportunity to win awesome book prizes for themselves and their teacher. Students also participated in the National Simultaneous Story time which is held annually and is now in its 18th year. The event sees the same book read simultaneously in libraries, schools, bookshops and many other places around the country. The school has also added a new segment to their weekly parades where a comfy reading couch complete with cushions is placed on the stage and each week students from different classes are invited to the stage to read a story to the school.

What does the Budget mean for the Sunshine Coast?
The recent coverage of the Federal Budget may well have left you wondering, what does it mean for us? I’m proud to say that the 2018 Budget has been another big win for the Sunshine Coast. In particular the Budget included $880 million for additional upgrades to the Bruce Highway, allowing us to add an extra lane between the Coast and Brisbane and get you home to your family safer and sooner. It also included $390 million to duplicate the railway line between Beerburrum and Landsborough and make further upgrades on the line to Nambour. Once matched by State Government funding, this will give us more regular and reliable trains, and get more freight trucks off the Bruce Highway. These infrastructure investments, added to the billions we have already committed to the Bruce since my election in 2016, will be an important boon for the vital tourism industry in the Hinterland. 60,000 people in our part of the Coast will also enjoy up to $530 a year in tax cuts from July, meaning more than a thousand dollars back in the pocket of thousands of Hinterland families, while 30,000 older Australians will be able to earn up to $300 a week in part time work without affecting their pension. If you want to know more about what this year’s Budget means for you, please contact my office.
Listening Post coming to Montville in July
I will be holding a Listening Post in Montville, at the Edge Cafe on Main Street, as part of my Winter Listening Post tour. I will be there on Thursday July 5. Please contact my office if you would like to confirm a time to come and give me your views and your feedback.
Maleny Show
I was honoured to officially open the Maleny Show on June 1. As the Show has developed over eight decades it has come to deliver everything that the Sunshine Coast could ask for from a community event – fantastic food and drink, exciting displays, wonderful arts and crafts and the chance to see our world class local performers – but it has never lost its heart. The Maleny Show still plays its most critical role serving our agricultural community by giving them the chance to show off some of the best produce in Australia. I had a great time on my stall over the two days, and had the chance to speak to many of you. I want to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you Maleny Show Society President Ivan Hankinson, the Patrons and Committee and in particular to all of the volunteers who make the show possible. If you missed out I would encourage you to mark the dates in your diary now and come and see all that’s on offer next year! State Member for Glass House 2018 Small Business Awards – aka the ‘Glassies’!
Businesses and employees from across the Glass House electorate had their moment to shine last week when I held my third annual Small Business Awards Gala Event, aka the ‘Glassies’, at the Beerwah Hideaway. The event grows bigger by the year, as we received over 150 nominations and over 6,000 votes this year. The Gold ‘Glassy’ business winner, Be Farm Fit, was a clear champion, as was Trish Lyon of Maleny Supa IGA, Gold ‘Glassy’ employee winner. Both winners were extremely deserving of their awards, as loud cheers Amie Stevens from the Be Farm Fit crowd on the night proved. All the finalists and winners should be proud to be delivering the very best for our Glass House communities and I am proud to be representing Trish Lyon Maleny Supa IGA such a hard-working electorate.
Maleny Rural Fire Brigade
I am incensed that the ongoing neglect of the Maleny Rural Fire Brigade (RFB) has now led many hardworking volunteer “firies” to consider hanging up their yellow jackets. I have called on the State Government to deliver on their promise and build a joint QFES facility, NOW! Several years ago members of the Maleny RFB approached me, fed up with having to bump out of their premises in the Maleny Showground’s Cattle Pavilion to accommodate the Maleny Wood Expo and Maleny Show each and every year. And when they do move back in they contend with the fragrant aroma left over by the cattle exhibits for weeks on end. I’d like to thank the many people who came to my stall at the Maleny Show and signed my petition to call on the Government to build our “firies” their new home. Your enthusiasm is appreciated and I won’t stop fighting until the new RFB home is constructed.
Let’s put a stop to cyberbullying
On May 21 I co-hosted the Queensland AntiCyberbullying Taskforce forum at the Lake Kawana Community Centre. The forum enabled residents to provide their ideas on how best to tackle cyberbullying as a community. It was fantastic to see so many people in attendance, as ideas gathered at the consultation event will inform the work of the Queensland Anti-Cyberbullying Taskforce, which is bipartisan in its approach and includes a Member of Parliament from the Government and the Opposition. Making sure our kids have the skills to live a life online is vital. If you've got tips and ideas that you could share but weren’t able to make it to the forum, please do not hesitate to get in touch with my office. glass.house@parliament.qld.gov.au www.andrewpowell.com.au Search us on Facebook Andrew Powell

Division 5 - Sunshine Coast World Environment Day
It was wonderful to kick off this month by joining in the celebration and representing council on the Main Stage at this year’s World Environment Day Festival. Council has supported this great World Environment Day Festival and many other events, primarily through the Environment Levy, for many years. This year’s World Environment Day theme is ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’ and I’m proud to say Sunshine Coast Council is delivering a range of programs to encourage and support our community to reduce, re-use and recycle. Sunshine Coast Libraries are helping our community start reducing their plastic waste in preparation for the single use plastic bag ban being introduced on July 1. Head to your nearest library to purchase your library bag, but get in quick as stocks are limited. In support of Plastic-free July, council will also be hosting a number of community events and activities including a youth forum with Sea Life Mooloolaba, a community clean-up day and screening of inspiring movies to encourage people to reduce the amount of plastics that end up on our beaches, in our environment and in our waterways. While we encourage everyone to reduce the amount of single-use plastics we consume and use, I also appreciate that reducing our use of plastic packaging is a two-way street, and I will continue to encourage all levels of government to work together to reduce the amount of plastic packaging, drinking straws and soft plastics available.
Conondale to Maleny Flexilink service
Look out for council’s new Conondale to Maleny Flexilink brochure. It’s the same great service and the same scheduled times, just a new look! Pick one up from Conondale General Store or Maleny Library, or visit council’s website.
It’s show time
I was also pleased to be one many people who attended the recent Maleny Show. Congratulations to the Maleny Show Society and the community for putting on another wonderful show jam-packed with so many great exhibits. If you missed out on the Maleny Show, don’t miss the chance to witness the grand parade and be amazed by the array of agricultural exhibits and entertainment when the 2018 Sunshine Coast Agricultural Show returns to Sunshine Coast Council’s Nambour Showgrounds from June 15-17. There will be the return of the ever popular wood chopping, which will see Queensland take on Tasmania for first place. There will also be show jumping, agricultural exhibits and fantastic entertainment. With increased numbers of exhibits and entries, this year’s show is not to be missed.
Boardwalk refurbishment for Maleny
The Obi Obi Boardwalk at Maleny will be closed between 7am and 4.30pm weekdays for structural refurbishment. Work is expected to take four weeks. We appreciate the public’s patience while this work is completed. Jenny.McKay@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au www.jennymckay.com.au Search us on Facebook Jenny McKay Councillor

BEAT THE WINTER BLUES ! A nurse’s touch
On any given day, RangeCare’s team of registered nurses is out and about tending to the needs of clients who are living along Nurse Mary, Nurse Claire and Nurse the range and who are living Donna independently in their home. Nurse Donna, a familiar face for many of RangeCare’s Maleny clients, said the nursing team often had very full days meeting the needs of its clients. “We not only provide care to many of our clients, but we also provide significant support to our care support workers who are sometimes presented with some tricky situations,” said Donna. Nurse Mary is proud of RangeCare’s nursing service and felt that for many clients, knowing there are nurses on staff with RangeCare is important. As one of RangeCare’s longest serving nurses and packaged care coordinators, she is proud of RangeCare’s nursing heritage. “A nurse was the foundation staff member when RangeCare was formed more than 30 years ago,” said Mary. During a time when many home care providers were outsourcing nursing services, RangeCare committed to continuing to employ its own team who could be available to not only clients, but also staff. Nurse Claire believes that this is one reason why RangeCare and their philosophy of caring stand out. “We know that it is reassuring for our clients to know that nurses are available to provide hands-on care and support within the home environment,” said Claire. Nursing care is just one of many services that RangeCare offers to support people to stay living independently in their homes. To find out more about RangeCare’s services or to make a donation to support our work within the community, visit www.rangecare.com.au or call our Maleny office on 5445 7044.

Jack Wilcox
Local author serves up history of local tennis Maleny author and historian Jack Wilcox has once again put his grey cells to very good use penning a new book, ‘Maleny Memories – thru the lens of tennis’. This marks Jack’s fourth book since his “retirement” to the Hinterland, and no doubt promises to be another intriguing insight into the history and local cultural standards of a bygone era. At 85, Jack Wilcox AM has no plans to slow down, and his writing reflects an incredibly full and interesting life. During his professional career Jack was a key player in the vibrant and emerging Australian coal industry, during a time when government careers could be made by a toss of the coin – as in the case of Jack, whose resulting 30-year career was established during the Whitlam years by “winning the coal job” portfolio. He then went on to become the department’s advisor (and confidante) to a successive number of high profile ministers. Upon retirement Jack was awarded the Order of Australia and received an honorary doctorate for his services to the coal industry. In 2014 he published his well-received memoir, ‘Coalman’, which captured the inner workings of behind the scenes political life during the Whitlam, Fraser and Hawke years. His other two previously released regional histories were inspired by his interest in the local community. One book, ‘Rotary in Maleny’, was born from the extensive archival work he undertook for the local Rotary Club, and the other
By Sonia Clark
centred around a local parish priest entitled ‘A Parish Odyssey’. Jack has returned to his love of local history with his newest book which looks at the impact that tennis had on the local area from 1903 through to 2004. The book traces the history of various clubs from Landsborough and Peachester, along the Maleny plateau to Wootha, Witta and Conondale and also provides a historical snapshot of the social interests the game provided. The social aspect of tennis underpinned many of these communities, especially in the early half of the twentieth century. Jack is self-professed tennis tragic and says he has loved the game since he was a teenager. “Tennis was a real family game back then – everyone could enjoy it and you could play anytime you like – we all grew up with it,” says Jack. The book traces the history of local clubs by the decades and leads into the formation of the Maleny District Tennis Association, however Jack says the real heyday for the game was during the 1920s and 1930s. He says during this time there would have been around 250 dairy farms and most of them would have had their own tennis court. “Especially around the mid 1920s-1930s, tennis was the social hub of the areas – there were tennis courts everywhere and the game served to ignite the local social activity.”
To research the book, Jack spent hundreds of hours trawling through Trove (the free Australian online library database aggregator) which provided a wealth of material and leads. Familiar with archival work, he also spent a huge amount of time researching tennis-related local articles and the historical records of local clubs. Now that he has completed this book, according to Jack “plans are already bubbling away” for his next one, which should keep his grey cells working! Jack will be launching ‘Maleny Memories – thru the lens of tennis’ this Sunday, June 17, at the Pat Daley Room in the Maleny Catholic Church at 10.15am.

Hi Julie here, I thought it was high time for our latest update. Well there's plenty to share!! My great “social organiser”, Di, suggested as part of the social calendar that we have a Bollywood Day. So, this took place a few Tuesdays ago. What a huge success!! Tell ya something, if you want to see my group "Go Off!" just throw on some Bollywood routines!! To look out and see their outstanding costumes, and the smiles on their faces, was so worth every bit of effort that went into this day. Thank you Di, and also a big thank you to Marianne and Pete, who opened up their beautiful home to us on this day as well. Wonderful hospitality, and even a sumptuous Indian cooked lunch after class! This day was such a success that I have decided to change my class format slightly and now will be incorporating a new timetable, and this will be Zumba Gold / Bollywood! If you are reading this, don't put off joining this very special group any longer. I can assure you, it will be the best thing you do! Feel free to call me anytime, and we will chat!

Business feature
Improve your sleep quality and improve your wellbeing A good quality sleep can make all the difference to improving the enjoyment of your life. The health benefits have been well documented, and a good quality sleep can greatly assist in physical and mental wellbeing. Many people, however, suffer from poor sleep without realising it. The crew at CPAP Direct make it their business to help people enhance their quality of life by providing a wholistic range of products that enhance and improve sleep quality. The business has now expanded its Morayfield showroom and has also relocated its Sunshine Coast store to the new Bunnings Complex Maroochydore. As well as a comprehensive range of products to help address sleep apnea, the newly extended showroom at Morayfield features a dedicated section showcasing ‘The Ultimate Sleep System’ from Wenatex. This high end, fully adjustable bed system is made to premium standards in Austria and has been specifically engineered for the body with multiple zones and also laced in antibacterial silver for optimum hygiene. This luxury bed is built for health and is also GST free. Don’t ignore the snore If you or your partner always feel tired, snore or snort at night, frequently get up during the night for bathroom breaks or have poor short term memory, it is important get an independent diagnostic sleep test to assess if you are suffering from obstructive sleep apnea. OSA has been linked to serious health risks such as stroke, heart attack depression and dementia. If untreated, it may seriously affect your quality of life.
Glasshouse Country & Maleny News
With the correct diagnosis, support and resulting mask and machine therapy, patients’ lives can be vastly improved.
If you have any concerns about the possibility of having sleep apnea, the first step is to visit your doctor and ask for a referral to have a diagnostic sleep study assessment which can be done in the comfort of your own bed environment with the latest technology. CPAP Direct recommend contacting Danica Wood at Queensland Snore Clinic who offers a door to door service. As an independent Sleep Diagnostic Specialist, Danica will come out to you and conduct a Medicare approved in-home sleep study. The following day the data will be assessed and sent away to be analysed by sleep scientists and a sleep physician who will generate the correct diagnostic report. If a positive diagnosis for sleep apnea is returned, it is usually recommended that you hire a CPAP machine and mask. CPAP Direct can facilitate this and will also deduct 100% of the hire costs off the already discounted package prices on the latest CPAP machines and masks.
Latest technology CPAP machine technology has rapidly evolved over the years and one of the world’s most popular machines is the ultra- portable and compact ResMed Airmini. Best discount offers for years Ours is a radar driven industry, and right now travel is off most people’s radar - as the ad says - we are NOT HAPPY JAN! There will be a thousand opinions as to why so let’s not go there. I’m here to confide, I have not seen a downturn like this since the eighties. And yes there are great positive offers for travellers in the market, with fabulous discounts and bonus add-ons being offered to encourage you to take a holiday. For example, the 5 star River Cruise Company Uniworld are offering 30-40% discount off selected European River Cruises. Renowned Cruise Lines are offering higher cabin credits (spending money on board) - free cabin up-grades, bottles of wine, no surcharge dining at specialty restaurants, free shore excursions. While others offer free return flights to Europe and hotel stays to join high end cruise lines and always with an option to extend your stay. Plus, all the major tour companies have released their 2019/20 early birds offers. And hot off the press, top end tour company Abercrombie & Kent are offering savings of up to $3,850 per couple on an 8 day private journey through Rajasthan, or save $6,000 per couple on a private tour to Buenos Aires, Iguazu Falls & Rio. If you see a tour or cruise you just love, bring in the details and let us see if we can recreate a similar journey and trim the cost to an even more realistic level. Finally, we still have space on our Autumn Tour to Japan’s Sacred Mountains, fully escorted. Departing 27 October 2018 for 15 days. $5,350.00 per person. Solo travellers welcome, with a single room supplement just $490.00. Mention this article and save $100.00 per person.

Fixed Fee Intitial Consultation Available Beerwah Law have been established in Beerwah for over 30 years. We have dedicated staff practising in areas relevant to seniors including estate planning, estate administration, wills, enduring powers of attorney, advance health directives and entry and exit into retirement villages. We are a general practice and therefore we cover most areas of the law for you. We are ‘Your Lawyers For Life’. Estate Planning For many people some estate planning, as part of or separate to your Will making process, can be invaluable. With factors including blended families, taxation issues and differing needs of beneficiaries, estate planning regularly saves our clients a great deal of stress, time and expense. Although estate planning can be complex, there are a number of tools available to skilled legal practitioners which can provide the optimal results for you. Such tools include testamentary trusts, rearranging and/or taking out new life insurance and superannuation. These tools, when expertly used, not only provide for your loved ones as you would wish but also drastically reduce the chances of a disgruntled beneficiary making a claim on your estate. This is important as these claims are increasingly common and the consequences can be devastating. The value of the estate usually decreases significantly as, in most cases, every party’s legal fees are paid from the estate – such as the executor of the estate, the beneficiaries of the estate and the disgruntled beneficiary making the claim. Because this area of the law necessarily involves personal relationships and emotions, sometimes the motivation of the disgruntled beneficiary is to ensure that the other beneficiaries do not receive any significant assets. Another factor to consider in these matters is the potential loss of personal relationships, not only for the immediate family but for generations to come. For this reason, testamentary trusts in particular are very useful legal structures which can assist in this highly litigious area. Estate Administration This is a core part of our practice. We make this process as easy as is possible your 141 294 Phin 0434 circumstances and tailor our service to your needs. Executors of estates are subject to very onerous obligations. We ensure that these obligations are fulfilled and that there are therefore no adverse implications for you. Please contact us to discuss your legal needs and make an appointment for these services.

The local area has lost another icon with the passing of Monica Smith on April 25. Monica believed that hard work and kindness is the backbone of society, and these approaches to how she lived her life contributed much to our local community over many years. The details of Monica’s life in this story are taken from the family’s eulogy presented by two of her grandsons, Cameron Smith and Mathew Rolfe at her funeral. Monica Estelle Smith was born on 31st March 1925 to Edward and Elenor Nissen at Imbil, Queensland. She was the youngest of six children. The third child, George, died at birth and Monica was herself not expected to live – 93 years later she proved them all wrong. Monica was 16 years old when the family moved to the property at Beerwah on the hill overlooking what is now Australia Zoo, where she worked hard with her father growing pineapples, paw paws and other small crops. It was war time and as both her brothers were away at war, she was able to get her driver’s licence at the age of 16, and drive an old Chevy. Monica married Lawrence Smith in 1946 at the St Andrews Church in Brisbane and together they had five children John, Nerida, Phillip, Jennifer and Helen who were raised at the Pine Camp Road, Beerwah property, called Endcliffe, established in 1913, by Lawrence’s parents, Alice and Ernest. Monica worked with Lawrence when the property was a poultry farm, then a dairy and finally turning to growing pineapples, small crops and ginger. Gardening was a big part of Monica’s life and something that brought her great joy and pride, hosting many garden parties for various charities and church groups as well as the local school. Monica was well known for her love of cooking and spent many hours preparing entries for the Maleny and RNA shows as well as the CWA. She loved to compete but was not afraid to question the judge’s decision if she felt her
entry was more worthy, and over a period of approximately 60 years she won a multitude of awards not only for cooking but for fine embroidery, cut flowers and sewing. Her family (which grew to include eleven grandchildren and four great grandchildren, with the fifth on the way) were told not to bother phoning or visiting in the lead up to the show because she was far too busy. Monica was self-taught in all that she did; music, floral art, gardening, cooking, sewing, making bridal dresses and wedding cakes. Once a steward at the RNA asked Monica how she learnt her skills, she replied, “By the light of a hurricane lamp!” Local, Max Whitten said, “Monica Smith has been the mainstay of the cooking section of the Maleny Show for the past 60 years. It’s folk like Monica that give soul to communities.” If she was in a cricket team she would have been the greatest all rounder!

Broccoli lattes could be a thing
Kaz undertakes oncology acupuncture training
Soulqi business owner Kaz Thomas-Roby has recently been invited to participate in an intensive postgraduate oncology acupuncture training program conducted at the Mater Hospital/Royal North Shore Hospital Sydney. The program is being facilitated by Associate Professor Dr Oh in collaboration with the Mater Hospital’s Oncology department and draws upon his extensive research collaborations with Arizona State University, Harvard Medical School and Yale University. Kaz has joined a select group of Australian acupuncturists chosen to undertake this training in Sydney which aims to provide a framework for evidence-based clinical practice in cancer care and to share new advances in integrative oncology research. Kaz has recently returned from her first block of training which requires a fortnightly interstate commitment during June and July.
Acupuncture
Driven by her passion to help others and to make a difference, she looks forward to incorporating the skills she acquires to help develop programs locally to support cancer sufferers such as women seeking fertility assistance who have breast cancer – she would also like to provide support for a future program to assist children. Her current training also requires that she submit a detailed case study at the end of the program which will contribute to ongoing research in the area.
Nutrient-rich coffees may be on the horizon after researchers have developed a powder that is made from imperfect-looking broccoli that would have been cast aside during processing. Being delivered through Hort Innovation for Australian vegetable growers and led by Australia’s national science agency, CSIRO, the new product packs a healthy punch with approximately one serve of broccoli in every two tablespoons of powder. Hort Innovation chief executive John Lloyd said the powder could be used for smoothies, soups, baking, as a way of hiding broccoli from fussy kids in meals, and even in coffees. “With a rising trend in healthy eating across the board, Australian growers are always looking at ways to diversify their products and cut waste while meeting consumer demand,” he said. Mr Lloyd also said despite the increasing popularity of ‘superfoods’ and health and wellness, Australian diets are still poor. What do you think? Would you consider this sneaky way of making your latte that little bit better for you?

From the churches There is one thing that I quickly learnt about myself when I was teaching my children to drive a car. I like to feel in control and having a learner in the driver’s seat takes away my sense of safety. At least one time with each child we had a circumstance where I thought I had explained very clearly what they needed to do, only to have my words misinterpreted and the car hurtling in a direction that it shouldn’t have been going. On at least one occasion it was because the child had decided to anticipate my instructions. Over the past couple of months God has been teaching me a lot about surrendering – surrendering my control. Too often, like my children, I can anticipate God’s instructions and dart ahead or misinterpret them and turn completely the wrong way. Psalm 37:7 says, “Be still in the presence of the Lord and wait patiently for him to act” (NLT) or, in the God’s Word Translation, “Surrender yourself to the Lord and wait patiently for him.” Surrender in this sense means following God’s lead without knowing where you are going. Waiting for God’s timing without knowing how long you have to wait and trusting God’s purpose without seeing the big picture. It means instead of trying harder that I need to trust more. The Bible is full of examples where people

Auditions for Twelve Angry Men – and women
The Maleny Players will be holding auditions for their upcoming production of ‘Twelve Angry Men’ this Saturday, June 16, from 9am to 11am at the Maleny Playhouse. This powerful classic play which will be performed over the weekend of August 10-12, was written in 1954 but its relevance is just as poignant today. A 19-year-old man has just stood trial for the fatal stabbing of his father. "He doesn't stand a chance," mutters the guard as the 12 jurors are taken into the bleak jury room. It looks like an open-and-shut case – until one of the jurors begins opening the others' eyes to the facts. Whilst this was originally an all-male cast, female roles will also be sought. The Maleny Playhouse is at the Maleny Showgrounds, Maleny Stanley River Road. For further information please contact Rob Hobson on 0418 785 967. CONDITIONS: To ensure all community notices can be printed each month please keep your contributions to a maximum of 100 words.

surrendered to God. Abraham surrendered when he decided to follow God with no idea where He was going to lead. David surrendered when he decided to wait for God’s timing for him to become king rather than take it into his own hands and kill King Saul. Jesus surrendered in the Garden of Gethsemane when he decided to do things God’s way and give up his life as a sin offering for mankind. Surrender is not always easy. The more dearly that we hold something the harder that it is to surrender control of. And yet this verse reminds us that we can be still as we surrender. That it is okay. God’s got this! God’s got you! You can stop worrying and surrender.

Out & About Blooming good weekend Gardening on the Edge held across the Blackall Range last weekend was once again a blooming success. One of the highlights of the Gardening Marketplace at the showgrounds was the spectacular Magic Rug, totally created by Camellia blooms. The creation brought together flowers from between 20 and 30 garden club members including ones from the wellknown Kellyfield Camellias that will be open to the public on the weekend of June 23 and 24.

Free lecture on aerial reconnaissance
An expert in aerial reconnaissance will deliver a free public lecture at the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) exploring how the military intelligence tool has evolved into a valuable planning instrument. The hour-long presentation by geospatial expert Ken Granger will be presented jointly by the Royal Geographic Society of Queensland and USC’s Geography discipline at USC’s main campus at Sippy Downs from 7.15pm on Tuesday June 19. Titled ‘Balloons, blackbirds and beyond: a short history of photo intelligence’, Mr Granger’s talk will trace the history of aerial reconnaissance, starting from when it was used in 1794 during the French Revolutionary Wars. Mr Granger will explain how the discipline – developed by the military for gathering strategic photographs – has evolved to become essential for professions such as urban planning and environmental management, which use high-resolution satellite images. There is no registration required for the lecture, which will be held in USC’s Lecture Theatre 2 in Building K from 7.15pm. Doors will open at 7pm.
An Afternoon of Memories

an amazing weekend. Organised by the Maleny Garden Club, Gardening on the Edge is a garden trail and garden market which raises money for local community groups. Since 2005, the Maleny Garden Club has shared over $100,000 amongst local groups as a direct result of funds raised during the Gardening on the Edge weekend. Each garden is a credit to the owners… so they should feel proud of what they’ve achieved. Throughout the year I’ll be showcasing each of the gardens in my ‘Backyard Stickybeak’ pages.
Peachester Horticultural Society
Contributed by Patricia Bradford A big thank you to Viki and Mal Blaik for inviting us to their garden for our last meeting. Members and visitors spent a lovely time wandering around the garden, situated on the escarpment not far from the Peachester Store, admiring the stunning outlook over the Glass House Mountains and beyond to the coast. There were lots of interesting plants to see and some suggestions for new plantings. Viki invited us to share her home and made pumpkin soup for lunch which was delicious. Our next meeting will be on Thursday June 21 at 9.30am at the Peachester Hall. We will be finalising the program for Friendship Day in July. Any new suggestions and ideas welcome. New members and visitors are always welcome. For more information, phone Viki Blaik and Rob Mo rris 5496 9169.
Glasshouse Country Orchid Society
Contributed by Jennifer Kelly Even though winter has arrived, there are still many lovely Cattleyas in flower and here is one which well deserved the Judges Choice at our May meeting. Robyn purchased this particular orchid 7 years ago from an Orchid show in Brisbane and fertilizes with slow release a couple of times per year, as well as periodically feeding with a foliar spray. Robyn grows her Cattleya Rlc. Donna Kimura 'Paradise Tami' hanging under 60 - 70 % shadecloth, so it get lots of air movement. With the chilly months her now well and truly with wn Bro yn Rob here, we expect to see Donna Kiruma many more of those big beautiful Cymbidiums out in flower. There should be some good ones on display at our next meeting to be held at the Glasshouse RSL on Thursday June 14, come along for a 7.30pm start.

Sport Give it a shot at come and try day Trail riders event at Beerburrum The recent Gold Coast Commonwealth Games saw nine medals won in the men’s and women’s shooting events… three gold, five silver and one bronze. If you viewed the televised Games, you may have watched shooting for the very first time and seen that it is a far cry from a redneck hobby that it has been portrayed in the past. To reinforce this modern approach to the sport, the Caboolture Clay Target Club with the Sporting Shooters Association of Australia, Caboolture Branch, have come together to once again hold their ‘Come and Try Day’ at the Uhlmann Road, Burpengary East sporting shooting complex this Sunday, June 17. Last year, the two clubs had hundreds of people to their open day, looking to try something different. Shooting is a self-challenging sport requiring skill, a high level of self-discipline and concentration. The come and try day will allow fully qualified and trained club members to explain and demonstrate the correct and safe use of firearms in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. In a 100% safe environment, anyone over the age of 11 years (minors must be accompanied by an adult) will be able to try shooting at a moving clay target, or try to hit a bullseye with a pistol for only $10. All shotguns, pistols, ammunition and safety equipment are provided as part of the $10 fee. You don’t need to have a gun licence to shoot on the day, but you will need to have photo identification, wear covered shoes (no thongs or sandals), a comfortable sleeved shirt and prescription glasses if you need them. You also must not be a ‘prohibited person’. No bookings are required. Just turn up between 9am and 4pm this Sunday at the 558 Uhlmann Road, Burpengary East shooting complex and register. The clay target shooting happens on an outdoor field, while the pistol shooting is in a specialised indoor firing range. A sausage sizzle, hot food and drinks will be available, so why not make a day of it? Sport shooting is the safest sport in Australia, and the clubs at the Uhlmann Road complex are proud to be very family friendly and safety conscious. Come along and give it a shot... you may discover a new and exciting pastime. For more information see the clubs’ websites: www. cctc.com.au and www. ssaacaboolture.com. Clay shooting can involve juniors as well (must be accompanied by an adult)
Sunshine Coast Area Trail and Endurance Riders (SCATER) are holding their next Competitive Trail Ride (CTR) at Red Road, Beerburrum on June 24. This fun CTR promises an 18-20km track in the forest and surrounds with ten judge points or challenges to be undertaken on the way. There will be Open, Novice, Junior, Teams and Training Divisions with trophies to third place in Open, Novice, Teams and Junior. A 10km track has been provided for the non-competitive Training Division. Cost is $30 for members and $50 for non-members which includes day insurance and lunch.
Nominate by close of day Wednesday June 20 – all forms are available on the SCATER website: www.scater.com.au.

Maleny Bowls Club News Contributed by Graeme Glover We had teams travel and play at Mapleton and Kilcoy with successful displays by our bowlers and enjoyable outings with our fellow Hinterland bowls friends. This support by our fellow clubs adds much to the game of bowls thriving in both their and our local communities. Thanks to all for your efforts. Tuesday was another great outing with our local club members enjoying some great bowls on our local green. Miles Allen was well supported by his lead John Kapetanic who has been on fire lately with his stick and draw bowls. Joe Walters and his team set up a great lead before the break but it wasn't maintained for the second outing. This enabled the Allen/Kapertanic combination to get the job done for the day. Wednesday night new season starts in two weeks time, so start getting your teams ready. If you would like to join in the Wednesday night fun contact the club and remember, everyone gets a game, a great burger and there’s beer on tap.
Thursday's schools bowls was cancelled because of the rain and the championship games washed out for the ladies semi-finals. Friday afternoon saw some good bowls with big upsets – Gary Darcy has really hit form since changing his sponsorship deal with VB and going to team XXXX Gold. Steve and Ray put a shot on the Jack, the XXXX team came to the rescue and moved it. Well done, Gary. Joe Walters used his arm to draw some nice bowls on the green, finishing near the Jack often. Well done Miles and Judith for a great tussle and for not allowing Joe to have it all his own way. The unbeatable John Kapetanic, with a sizeable handicap, had his sails lowered by Sandra Kapetanic. Well done Sandra and Mo in having a great tussle with John on your rink. Ian Chatterton found some good Scroungers form on his rink. Our main man on Daylilies and club sponsor had a good day on the green in a tight tussle with Relma and Ray. Well done Scott A on joining the winners circle. Well done to all who played.

Witta Tennis Contributed by Pauline Fraley Witta Wagtails had their second last match and played against a very strong team of the Maleny Racqueteers, gunning some very strong aces. Maleny won 48-13 and our thanks to team members Gerry, Janet, Elaine and Cynthia once again for your support. Whistlers played at Witta against Maroochydore Meteors. We had a late start due to wet courts. But the sun came out and turned to a warm, nice day for tennis. We had good rallies and lots of deuces but didn't quite get there. Score was 23-41 games, 2-6 sets. Team was Liz Mellish, Maree Hooley, Donna Kuskopf and Aki Lepper.
That's it for this season, thanks and well played to all players. We'll have fun again next season. The Wildcats travelled to Nambour Showgrounds to battle it out against the Champers. The team of Pauline, Annie, Stacey and Libby led from the start and fought off strong opposition from the Champers. Your Stars ARIES March 21 – April 20 The Moon in your sign over the weekend gives you a decided edge. Read, learn, communicate, visit, go on errands, get out and about! You have to be discerning over the weekend in what you choose to purchase or do. Make sure that your tastes and desires are reasonable, as the current trend may lead you down a path to financial regret! TAURUS April 21 – May 21 Your mind may be focused on finances. This is because the Sun and Mercury are in Gemini for the first three weeks when relationships and money are emphasised. Watch out if a child returns home because they are unable to make the rent! You may have to use a lot of elbow-grease just to have a project moving through the weekend. GEMINI May 22 – June 23 Start a new personal plan project and watch how it is amplified by Venus entering the sign of Leo. You will be feeling connected, contented and enjoy relaxing with neighbours, siblings and local contacts. They are all charming and witty at this time. This weekend you need to find a better balance between your needs and those that depend on you. CANCER June 24 – July 22 Emotional intelligence and intellectual brainstorming rate highly this week. This is because your confidence is booming, together with your creativity and intimate love. There may be pent up feelings over the weekend that you, or another, may want to deal with, so you need to find a quiet place so nobody interrupts passionate speech!

Your idea of weight lifting is standing up. 14. It takes longer to rest than it did to get tired. 15. Your memory is shorter and your complaining lasts longer.
LEO July 23 – August 22 With the Sun and Mercury joined together in curious Gemini, this is the perfect time for you to announce a goal and ask for others to join in with you. A new friend, or a revitalised social circle may also arrive. Short trips with your best pals will be enlivening. Over the weekend news from afar is encouraging. Make the most of opportunities now. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 Even though this week sees you off to a quick start, it may also be filled with deception, confusion and lack of clarity! This may pertain to a professional situation as clients are confused in the first place! You clean up all matters over the weekend, overcoming obsessive mind-looping maneuvers. Don’t respond with angry reactions. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 Prospects for a happy weekend arrive for you when good news travels your way. In the following days there is the call to be accommodating in order to keep your partnership on a peaceful, even keel. Part of the weekend sees the desire not to rock the boat or influence choices. Strange groups or crowds make you nervous. Keep the peace. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 Be really careful this weekend, danger surrounds you. Might be time to revise your insurance. There could even be a startling new, sudden change on the work front. Possibly this involves emotional complications. A post-midnight difference of opinion may not be resolved over the weekend. You may have an unsettled or restless partner.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 If you get caught in an overnight dispute it would be best not to jump to judgment or rash actions. This usually is very hard for you to do as your mouth can spit something out, followed by placing your foot in it! It is much better to pace things out and find more agreeable territory the following day after any disputes. Health needs attention. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 The first part of the week may hold unstable communications, either in person, on line, or via phone. Within a few hours you will find peace and solace. This is because you will find compatible, compassionate comrades. The weekend may also see a troubling discussion with a family member. Someone has a weighty suspicion to distract you. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 Financial outlook is still dubious for the second week of this month. So it is not wise to trust others with your investments without digging into the background of contributing factors. The weekend comes with the same warnings about spending. As you are aware, great temptations await the unwary due to the end of the year financial sales. PISCES February 20 – March 20 You are wondering why your energy feels low. All you have to do is pace yourself and before you know it a soft wave of caring and affection arrives! Under current Gemini aspects suspicions or secrets or undercurrents arrive over the weekend. Try not to let yourself be provoked or let these feelings linger in your subconscious. Enjoy brunch with a friend.
