Hi Everyone...
on the Cover
Well, this week’s edition is jam packed as usual with what’s been happening locally as well as a very full seniors feature. One of the stories we have included in the feature is about a service that matches up surrogate grandparents with young families. I had never heard off this service until a reader sent through some information and asked if we could share it in the paper. It sounds like a great idea and I really hope that it helps generate some local interest from potential nannas and granddads out there. It got me thinking about how fortunate I was to have two very different nannas, who both influenced my life in many ways. One grandmother was a practical, sensible lady who shared her no nonsense wisdom with me on many topics and the other was a very unique individual with her own sense of style and logic. While neither are around anymore, I know I was fortunate to have them in my life for so long and to have gained a lot from their knowledge and experiences. And I really hope that that the ‘Find a Grandparent’ website might help bring together interested families and surrogate grandparents to create their own Regards, great memories.

Glasshouse Country & Maleny News
Glasshouse Country & Maleny News
Since 2017, Cr McKay has been the Sunshine Coast Council’s only female councillor and while she would like to see a female replace her, she acknowledges that at the end of the day it is most important to get the best person for the job. While Cr McKay has decided that the time is right to pass the baton onto someone who can bring new ideas and enthusiasm to the role, she is planning to continue to be actively involved in the local community. Throughout her time as a councillor she has fought her own health battles including breast cancer in 2008. When she has more time in retirement she is looking forward to working to help cancer survivors and the Cancer Council with their work. Within hours of Cr McKay sharing her decision to retire, one local candidate - the editor of Sunshine Valley Gazette Richard Bruinsma - had already announced his candidacy for the election. The next local government general election will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2020 so there is still plenty of time for many more candidates to join the race.

By Lea Parkes With just over 12 months until Queensland’s 2020 local government elections, a number of Sunshine Coast media outlets had been putting pressure on Cr Jenny McKay to find out if she will run for council again. Last week while at a media event at Pattemore House in Maleny she advised the media that after nearly 20 years in the job she has decided that this will be her last term as an elected representative. She has, however, warned her constituents that while she believes it is the right time for her to make this decision, she will be working in her usual “full steam ahead” manner until her last day on the job. When Cr McKay was first elected in 2000 it was in the days of the former Maroochy Council and at that time there was just under 5,000 people per division. Today it’s around 20,000. “With the amalgamated council in 2008 there came a greater responsibility and commitment to the broader region,” Cr McKay said. She believes the amalgamated council is better for the coast than three separate councils. There have been numerous highlights for her in her time in the role including the agreed location of the Maleny aquatic centre, the Mary Cairncross Education Centre and the work she has been able to do internationally. She is looking forward to completing more projects before the end of her term.

Progress on park in the precinct It was action stations at the new Heritage Park site on the Maleny Community Precinct recently. With whipper snippers and mowers buzzing, the team of volunteers from Maleny Rotary, Lions, RSL and the Sport and Recreation Club cleared the way under a huge fig tree in preparation for a design that will see picnic tables and seating installed under and around the tree’s canopy. The public will be able to enjoy the magnificent views of the precinct from this vantage point, as the collaborative project will break the design up into stages, with seating seen as the top priority. The new park is to be constructed on Maleny Sports Park, the area leased from Sunshine Coast Council by the Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club (MDSRC). MDSRC president Greg Williams, who is excited about this collaborative project, said there was a need for this park on the precinct as it is located close to the walking trail and Parklands Drive. “Families can walk or drive there. It’s wonderful to see the commitment from our partner groups to
bring the design the group have funded themselves towards reality for the community,” Greg said. “I commend council for their forward planning, with the town plan ensuring that zoning on the precinct accommodates and reflects the vision of the precinct as a mixed-use area for all to enjoy. “The bulk of the precinct is zoned community facilities, with annotation (or categorisation) number 11 defined as 'outdoor sport and recreation’. “This allows the environment, sport, heritage and community uses to work really well together on this beautiful parcel of land. “As the park begins to take shape, the adjoining paddock that is the 5th Light Horse training fields will become a great addition to Heritage Park for casual outdoor family activities, like kite flying, picnics and more. “The team put in a lot of hard work in our first hands-on working bee for stage one of our project, and everyone is looking forward to implementing the various elements of the design as funding becomes available,” he said.

Did council get it right for Landsborough? Following significant input from the Landsborough community, the draft Landsborough Placemaking Master Plan is now open for review and feedback. The draft plan captures the community’s vision for the town and outlines recommendations for Landsborough’s streets and public spaces and looks at future opportunities. Division one councillor Rick Baberowski said Sunshine Coast Council had taken feedback from previous “values and visioning” community engagement and translated that into a draft plan. “This is the community’s chance to verify that we have got it right so far and if you haven’t been involved as yet, to jump in now and help shape the future of Landsborough,” Cr Baberowski said. “As part of the consultation, we heard that Landsborough should be a place that is easy to
attractive town centre, all the while retaining its country town look and feel. “It should also become a livelier, better integrated local shopping precinct and retain a strong sense of connection to its rural heritage and gateway role to the hinterland,” he said. Council’s place development and design portfolio councillor Peter Cox said that what defined the character of a place or town was its public space. “How successfully this is maximised depends on how well government and communities work together,” Cr Cox said. “The Landsborough placemaking project is a terrific example of council and Landsborough residents coming together to shape and activate streets. “I urge all residents to have their say at the upcoming information sessions or via an online survey available on council’s website,” he said. While the main aim of the consultation is to seek feedback on the draft master plan, the project team is hoping to hear from residents about their preliminary ideas of what can be achieved through the streetscape beautification program proposed for Cribb Street. As the design progresses throughout the year, the community will have the opportunity to provide further feedback with a reference group to be formed soon. Further details about the reference group and the project will be available on council’s website www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au.

Explore nature’s skyscrapers at BioBlitz An arachnologist, mycologist and entomologist walk into a rainforest… while this may sound like the start of a joke, it is in fact an upcoming event at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve from March 28-31. The Mary Cairncross BioBlitz will provide an opportunity for scientists, members of the community and decision makers to intimately observe rainforest biodiversity. Environment portfolio councillor Jenny McKay believes this scientific surveying of five strangler figs is an excellent reinforcement of the Sunshine Coast Council’s healthy, smart, creative vision. “We are very much looking forward to hosting an array of highly qualified scientists and researchers that will make up the BioBlitz survey team,” Cr McKay said. Tree climbers will take the scientists into the canopies of five trees where they will study these living skyscrapers and all the different species that call them home. Data generated from the survey will list what lives in these trees so this flora and fauna can be better managed and protected. Creative professionals will also contribute to the four-day event. Six artists will document their own observations of the strangler fig survey and their creative responses will be on public display at the reserve’s Rainforest Discovery Centre. For community members curious about what lives high up in the canopies or within the branches and bark of these strangler figs there will be a range of hands-on, thought-provoking, scientific
and cultural public education events. The Maleny Printmakers invite you to look closely at the beauty of local leaves, capturing their botanical identity in a take-home piece of art. Other public events include microphones capturing the sounds from the top of the rainforest, a junior ranger challenge for young scientists, sunrise pademelon counts and Forest Feedback – a diverse discussion on biocommunication - with some of the scientists participating in BioBlitz. The Mary Cairncross BioBlitz is funded by gold coin donations from visitors to the reserve. To learn more about the Mary Cairncross BioBlitz and to register for any of the public education events, please visit council’s website.

Locals gain confidence in preventing suicide DENTURE CLINIC Following the recent safeTALK training held at Landsborough, 17 people in our local community now have greater knowledge and confidence to recognise the signs, have a caring conversation with and provide links to help people who may be thinking of suicide. People who attended the training included neighbourhood centre volunteers, school teachers and chaplains, community group members, professional workers, university students and others who came as a neighbour or friend of people in the community. Tomas Passeggi, the safeTALK trainer from the Caloundra Community Centre, said everyone could play a part in creating suicide safer communities. “Of course, clinical services and crisis responses are essential, but being confident about recognising signs and having a difficult and courageous conversation with a family friend, work colleague or neighbour is something we can all do,” he said. One of the participants said it felt like the training gave permission to approach a person, and that it was OK to be upfront and ask “is this what you’re thinking?” Another said that she had people around her who she now knows may have been showing signs of suicidal thoughts. Doing the course had definitely made her more aware of people in her own life and brought it to the forefront so she now felt she could approach them. Another male participant said he missed an opportunity to intervene in what was obviously a
time when a neighbour friend was acting differently. He said that now he had the training, he felt more confident and competent to take the first big step to approach people and ask questions. This safeTALK training was sponsored by the Caloundra Community Centre, All-in-One Fitness Centre and Mind on Yoga. It was supported by the Suicide Prevention in Communities Reference Group and the Glasshouse Country Suicide Prevention Working Group. Thanks to this support the cost to participants was only $15. If you are interested in hearing about opportunities to do this training in the future, or if you would like to sponsor or enquire about the Glasshouse Country Suicide Prevention Working Group, please contact Natasha Odgers on 0418 720 515 or email natasha@calcomm.org.au.

Community excitement is building as Mooloolah Valley Country Club gets set to mark its first birthday celebrations with a fun family day on Saturday, March 16. Kicking off at midday until late, the event will feature a swag of activities, fabulous food, live music and the big ticket item of the day - charity pig races. The stars of the day will undoubtedly be the super cute six racing piglets supplied by Noah’s Thoroughbred Racing Pigs. From the first bugle race call at 1pm, through the obstacles, to the last snout in the finishing trough, locals will be cheering their preferred pig to the end, with all profits supporting Mooloolah based charity endED. Robyn Poulus, from Mooloolah Valley Country Club, said that plans for the celebrations were shaping up well with family activities such as a jumping castle, face painting and sausage sizzle booked in along with pop up food and beverage tents. “We are looking forward to seeing everyone and are pleased to be supporting the local charity
endED. There will be plenty of activities throughout the day to keep young and old happy, along with fantastic food and live music into the night – it’ll be a fun day out for friends and family,” Robyn said. Entry is free with access to the racing and outdoor pop up tents through the main club entry. Local band Trippin will be playing along with other local performers. To find out more go to the Mooloolah Valley Country Club Facebook page or call the club on 5494 5973. A courtesy bus will be running. For more details contact the club.
Mooloolah Newsagency set to re-open Mooloolah is finally set to have a local newsagency again with an official re-opening day planned for Saturday, March 16. Purchased by Toni Collett and her daughter Natalie, news of the business’s re-opening after being closed for months has been well received by Mooloolah locals keen to throw their support behind the convenience of having a locally operated newsagency again. Celebrations kick off at 7.30am on the day with in-shop discounts, vouchers, a raffle and sausage sizzle courtesy of the Mooloolah Lions
Club. For the early risers, Toni and Natalie will be giving away 25 free coffee vouchers for adjoining business Andy’s Café. It will be the early birds getting the coffee worm as it is a first in best dressed giveaway. There will be a St Patricks’ Day celebration raffle with the prize including a bottle of Glenfiddich and other goodies, and Gold Lotto syndicates will be available for those wanting a crack at $30 million prize draw on March 30.

Nathan Dodd
The talents of Maleny local Nathan Dodd and his international cricket career were highlighted in GC&M News on January 23. We thought it would be interesting to find out more about Nathan’s long-standing love of the game and what led him to develop his interest in cricket coaching. Q: When did you move to Maleny and why? My wife’s parents lived there before we moved up from Sydney. I immediately loved the town and the community and have been lucky enough to have been here four years now. Q: Who initially got you involved in the sport and when did you start? My dad introduced me to the game and, officially, I started playing when I was nine. Previously I was playing in the backyard against my dad and brother, which was fun. Q: Did you play representative cricket and at what level? I played for NSW in youth squads and went on to play first grade Premier Cricket in Sydney with Manly Warringah. I was also lucky enough to play Second XI Championship county cricket with Kent and Worcestershire in England. Q: What do you love about the sport? I love the tactical and technical side of the game as well as the competitiveness. Now days I really love the coaching and mentoring side of the game, but the best part is the friendships I’ve been able to form all over the world. Q: How did you get started as a coach? I was playing in Sydney for Manly and working
for our coach in his sports store in Dee Why. He needed a current player to coach Manly’s team in the AW Green Shield U16 competition. From there I completed my coaching badges and have been lucky to have had some opportunities with various teams and organisations. I love to see players achieve their goals and dreams. Q: How did you then get involved as a highperformance coach with the Australian Cricket team for players with an intellectual disability? I completed my level three high performance course at the end of 2016. From there my passion for coaching really grew and I spent some time with some of the country’s elite coaches and took on a role as an assistant for the Queensland intellectual disability team. I was then fortunate to be offered a role on the Australian staff in early 2017, which I really enjoy, along with a few other roles. It’s great to see these players getting opportunities and recognition to play for their country. Q: What does a level three high performance coach mean? It is the highest level cricket coaching accreditation you can do in Australia, which is what all our elite coaches have. It provides you with strategies and techniques on how to coach and manage elite level players and staff. Q: You mention that cricket coaching is very competitive, so what are your future coaching goals? It is very competitive at the high performance level, so you need to keep learning and improving.
Join the Sunshine Coast’s friendliest Golf Club
Promising Maleny junior cricketer Cameron Kronk is pleased with the one-on-one training he is having with Nathan I’ve enjoyed the consultancy roles I’ve done this year in NSW and overseas in Nepal. I’d be open to moving into a full-time role overseas for the right organisation but ideally I’d like to one day work in a state program, possibly in youth or women’s cricket. Also, I’d like to work as an assistant in a senior program, preferably for one of my mentors who’ve been really helpful in my development.

In return for this sponsorship, the club will show off your business with your business logo on our club’s polo shirts when our members attend other clubs around Australia. Probus activities
Contributed by Norma McCormack If you are an active retiree who wants to keep the grey matter ticking over, then join the Probus Club of Glasshouse Mountains. We have interesting and informative speakers who cover a range of topics, sometimes completely out of our experience, such as the bionic eye. At this talk we learned of remarkable advances in science and we were able to ask questions and receive clear answers, at our level. This was one of the many outstanding experiences we have shared thanks to our speakers. Probus has sub clubs that includes a music and book club as a monthly highlight. One of our members conducts the music group and thanks to his outstanding knowledge as well as his extensive collection of 78s and CDs means our listening experience matches the knowledge he imparts. Our February outing to Bribie’s Butterfly House was popular and was followed by a delicious lunch at the RSL Bongaree. If our Probus Club reads like a club of choice for you, please contact Norma at 5439 0446.

Evading police and drug possession
Two people have been charged after evading police at Beerwah last Thursday. Officers from Maroochydore were involved in an operation at 4.30pm targeting vehicles of interest on the Sunshine Coast when they noticed a sedan allegedly with false plates on Steve Irwin Way. Police followed the vehicle for a short time before activating lights and sirens but the vehicle allegedly accelerated away and crossed into the path of oncoming traffic before returning to the correct side. Police will allege the vehicle then drove onto the left side shoulder of the road and attempted to enter the traffic lane just north of the Glass House turnoff. It will be alleged the vehicle crashed into two stopped vehicles while trying to drive between them and when the police car approached the vehicle reversed towards it. Officers who were getting out of the police vehicle were forced to jump back in order to avoid being hit. Other police at the scene took the occupants of the vehicle into custody. A subsequent search of the vehicle allegedly found almost 100g of methamphetamine, an amount of cannabis, cash, stolen iPhones, an extendable baton and a knife. A 33-year-old Beerwah man has been charged with a number of offences including dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, failing to stop, unlicensed driving, possession of false registration plates, possessing dangerous drugs and unlawful possession of a weapon (knife). A 27-year-old Dicky Beach woman has been charged with possessing dangerous drugs, possessing tainted property, possession of property suspected of being the proceeds of crime and unlawful possession of a weapon. Both are due to appear in the Maroochydore Magistrates Court today. No one was injured but two vehicles belonging to members of the public were damaged.
Get together this Neighbour Day
Contributed by Natasha Odgers Neighbour Day on Sunday, March 31, is Australia’s annual celebration of community, bringing people next door, across the street or on the next farm together for a chat, a barbie or just a cuppa. This year the theme of Neighbour Day is ‘Loneliness – what neighbours can do to create connections’. Relationships Australia, which manages Neighbour Day, says that we tend to Neighbours in Diamond Valley think of lonely people as old, or single having morning tea after people living alone. However, loneliness planting trees together is experienced by people across the age and social spectrum, including young people, people living with their partners and families, and even people surrounded by others in the workplace. Research shows loneliness is associated with poor physical health, poor socioeconomic outcomes, social anxiety, and poor mental health, Relationships Australia says. Neighbour Day can be as big or small as you would like. You could simply make an effort to have a chat with a neighbour or you could organise an event for your street. Neighbourhood event ideas include a barbeque and street gathering, a game of cricket in the local park, a party on the front lawn, afternoon tea in the back paddock or a picnic. Everything you need to help create your Neighbour Day event is now available on the neighbourday.org website. You could also head along to the hinterland community development stall at the CWA Market on Saturday, March 30, from 8am-1pm in Simpson Street, Beerwah, to have a chat with someone about how you can connect with your neighbours. Sunshine Coast Council will provide ‘At home in my neighbourhood’ toolkits and Glasshouse Country Neighbourhood Watch will have neighbourhood contact cards to take home. Remember, every day is a time to be in the spirit of neighbour day.

Celebrate Glasshouse Country recently pieced together its strategic plan to set it up for a brighter future. The vision of the group is to strengthen the Glasshouse Country identity by supporting connected communities. The mission is to facilitate growth of community, business and tourism within Glasshouse Country by the enrichment of relationships. Natasha Odgers, a strategic planning facilitator from the Hinterland Community Development Program, said it was wonderful to see the clarity and enthusiasm volunteers gained by going through the processes as a team. Celebrate Glasshouse Country president Judy Tomlinson said the group had been trying different approaches over the past few years “and now we really know where we’re going”. “We feel it will help us with taking on future projects and applying for funding now that we are clearer on who we are and where we’re going,” Judy said. For more information about Celebrate Glasshouse Country or to be part of this proactive local group, email info@celebrategc.com.au or phone 0408 445 988. You can also keep up to date with the group and other local initiatives by following Celebrate Glasshouse Country on Facebook or visiting the website www.celebrateglasshousecountry.com.au. Maleny Fix It Café
Every second and fourth Thursday of the month from 9.30am–2.30pm, a group of handy people gathers at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre to mend broken items for a $5 donation. Organiser Jim Striker wants more locals to make use of the service. "We've got a large capacity here and I'm sure there are a lot of people out there who need something to be fixed,” Jim said. One of the volunteers Nev has been with the café since its inception in November 2012 and is the resident bicycle repair man. Nev said bicycles had always been a part of his life “so you might as well put what you know back into the community". "When you get bearings adjusted absolutely perfectly there's a sense of satisfaction there," Nev said. Seamstress Josie said sewing was a dying art and people often need hems fixed up or their buttons sewn on or a hole patched. “Sadly no one does it anymore and it's my passion,” Josie said. Jim believes that as well as helping to keep items out of landfill, the Fix It Café was just as importantly making social connections. "I think our society is such that the extended family has dissipated a lot. "Back in the day, people’s uncles or their father used to be able to do all this stuff, but these days people are becoming isolated entities,” Jim said. Another great element of how the café works is that volunteers were always willing to pass on their knowledge and teach people how to extend the life of their belongings. Items that can be repaired include bicycles, clothing and small furniture items. The Fix it Café will be open this Thursday from 9.30am– 2.30pm and the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre is located at 17 Bicentenary Lane, Maleny.

Buddy benches the new buzz
Believe Parent Support Group, a sub-committee of the Landsborough State School’s P&C Association, has got the year off to a great start with the installation of three yellow buddy benches in the school’s three playgrounds. Believe Group activities are focused on supporting the parents of children with high or special needs, with an emphasis on inclusion for all. The group’s 2018 goal was to raise enough funds for the buddy benches, which was in part achieved through a $1000 community grant from the Rotary Club of Glasshouse Mountains and a $500 donation from WA-based company NRW Civil and Mining. The rest of the funds were raised through a successful trivia afternoon held at the Landsborough Pub. The group thanked the many local business and small market owners who donated prizes for the afternoon for their generosity. Nearly everyone at the trivia afternoon went home with a prize and plenty of new knowledge. It was such a great afternoon, the Believe Group has decided to hold an annual trivia afternoon. The buddy benches have been installed at the school and are already a big hit with all the children. If you would like to get in touch with the Believe Group or the Landsborough P&C you can email them at pandclandsboroughss@eq.edu.au
Students experience reverse inclusion
Beerwah State High School year nine student Thomas Robins will take part in the under 23 National Wheelchair Basketball Championships in Townsville from April 13–21. As part of the school’s year nine basketball lessons, students have had the opportunity to try wheelchair basketball, a reverse inclusion strategy. Reverse inclusion is an inclusive sporting environment where everyone is equal on the sporting playing field. Steve Jeffery, head of Beerwah High School’s health and physical education department, said many people with physical disabilities were restricted from participating in ablebodied team sports. “In reverse inclusion, inclusion is created through enabling people to play sport together, regardless of whether they are a person with a disability or an ablebodied person,” Steve said. “In this sense, the wheelchair is a piece of sporting equipment and, as very few students had experienced wheelchair basketball, everyone is at the same level. “The students involved and Thomas have enjoyed the opportunity immensely and we would like to thank Sharon Hill and Sunshine Coast Spinners for the loan of the chairs. “We wish Thomas all the best for the national championships next month and hope the extra training at school helps him achieve his goals,” Steve said.

Community Groups The Coochin Creek Bushland Group Contributed by Gordon Reddek The group will be holding its next working bee on Tuesday, March 19. We will start at 7.30am and knock off at about 10.30am. At the last working bee we were visited by a group of 22 international students who participated in extending our planting area. The photo shows them taking refuge from the sun under our gazebo at the end of the session. It was a hot day, but hopefully it will be cooler at the upcoming working bee. The plan for the March 19 working bee is to mark new plants by inserting stakes next to them. This will ensure we know their location when they become engulfed in weeds and it also marks the spot to water. We will also be weeding and watering as required, and possibly planting as well. Our group is small and we enjoy working in the open, learning about the local native vegetation and making a positive contribution to the upkeep and preservation of our local bushland reserve. Anyone with similar interests is most welcome to join us. We operate as a group in the Sunshine Coast Community Nature Conservation Program. Participation is free and we end our working bees with a cup of tea, biscuit and a bit of socialising. Please come with a hat, long pants, a longsleeved shirt and good working shoes. All equipment required will be supplied. We will start by meeting at the gate to Caralan Park, which is at the corner of Emma Place and Caralan Way, Beerwah. For more information please contact Gordon on 0406 638 544.

Sticky bearing needs repairing By Lea Parkes Running a museum requires a range of skills, so it is fortunate that over the years Landsborough Historical Society has had many volunteers with many skills who have generously shared their talents. These days the dedicated team is always on the lookout for volunteers with useful skills and currently hopes to find someone with the knowledge to keep an Intertype typesetting machine in sound working order. The machine is part of the museum’s print shop display and while the machine can be started it appears to have a sticky bearing that needs repairing. The Intertype machine was donated in 1988 by Jack Crees who was a member of the Landsborough Historical Society and owner of the Caloundra newspaper ‘Caloundra Topic’. The first edition of ‘Caloundra Topic’ was published on April 5, 1947 from Jack Crees’ home in Suller Street, where the Caloundra Events Centre now stands. Jack was the machine operator, as well as the editor and advertising representative for the paper, which closed in the mid-1950s. If you think you can assist with the maintenance work required and happy to volunteer your time, then give Tim a call on 5494 1755, or email landsboroughmuseum@aapt.net.au The museum is open Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 9am–2.30pm and is located at 4 Maleny Street, Landsborough.

The winner of Smart Living Society Limited’s lucky draw at the Hinterland Aussie Day Expo was Jane Shamrock, who recently collected her prize and what a lovely bubbly person she is. Jane mentioned that this never happens to her and what a fantastic surprise it was! The second prize winner was Loraine Fawns, who had just come back from holidays and was very excited about the news. Third prize went to the Witta Recreation Club. It was wonderful to have so many people come and chat with us at the event and come and take part in the lucky draw. What an amazing day it was, with special thanks to the Maleny District Sports and Recreation Club for hosting this wonderful morning. Millionaire tax dodge
When I read that Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace had ridden around Fisher touting about Labor’s proposed “retiree tax” and the supposed terrible impost it would have on seniors, I nearly choked on my tea. What he was referring to was the franking credit system introduced by Paul Keating to remove double taxation on share dividends. Under the Howard Government, franking credits became a tax credit that gave taxes paid on corporate profits by the company back to the shareholder as cash refunds, even if they paid no tax. In effect, they were double dipping. There are now an awful lot of very wealthy people who have been receiving tax refunds for franking credits for a very long time while paying no income tax. These people have a powerful vested interest in keeping the status quo, and these are the people Mr Fisher is appealing to, not the average retiree. His focus on the average retiree as a victim of this “iniquitous” policy is pure hubris. There must be some awfully wealthy retirees on the Sunshine Coast, because those with superannuation funds in excess of $1,000,000 claim almost 90% of excess franking credits. According to ATO data from 2014-2015, 92% of taxpayers did not claim excess franking credits through their personal income tax return. Based on data provided by the ABS and the Parliamentary Budget Office, over 90% of shares were held by households with wealth exceeding $1,000,000. It would have made more sense - and been more honest - if Mr Wallace, instead of pushing his 18

Local farmers
Many of you may have noticed that fruit and vegetable prices have been skyrocketing. Every week at the supermarket I am constantly reminded in the decrease of my disposable income. It is unequivocally apparent that the cost of living has increased far more than our wages/pension. This is a frightening issue that we need to address before it is too late. It would be reasonable to think that with the increase in prices new and existing local farms would be benefiting, but this is simply not the case. Ironically, with the increase in prices local farmers seem to be suffering from an accumulation of setbacks, the most prominent being the predatory bargaining power of our own major supermarket chains. These majors are exploiting our farmers and are pricing them out of the market, resulting in a significant increase in farm closures. The second setback is that foreign companies are buying local farms to then export produce back to their own country. I think we can all agree that this does not serve the best interests of Australia and is causing a significant amount of damage to our communities. Who is to blame? I don't think we can blame any one person in particular, though what I do believe is that there needs to be a substantial pivot in the attitude towards the severity of this crisis. Did you know that our local government has allocated nothing of the $864 million 20182019 budget to the Sunshine Coast agricultural sector? This is an absolute disgrace and local government should be held somewhat accountable for our suffering local industry. What can we do? Very simply I would encourage people to buy from local distributors and prioritise Australian grown produce over internationally imported products. James Grimard, Mount Mellum
Landsborough parking Issues
For some years now, the residents of Cribb and Mill streets in Landsborough have had to put up with the inconvenience of having their street used as a car park by train travellers for at least one or two days out of most weeks. The inconvenience becomes even worse when some arrogant motorists, seemingly blissfully unaware of the road rules, often park in such a way as to impede access to our property, not to mention causing a safety issue when we are entering or exiting our property because part of the offending vehicle actually blocks part of the driveway. I now take the precaution of photographing any vehicle that does this so that should anything happen to cause damage to their vehicle, I have proof that it was incorrectly parked. Come on Queensland Rail what will it take before you do something to improve station parking availability? Name supplied Landsborough

Pollution by CO2
Derek Browning (GC&M News, March 6) objects to calling carbon dioxide a “pollutant” because it is a plant food. Why can’t it be both? A pollutant is a substance harmful to human wellbeing. Our cane growers use fertiliser but it becomes a pollutant when it reaches the Great Barrier Reef. Salt is essential to human life but becomes a pollutant if there is too much in us (high blood pressure) or our soils (scalded paddocks in the WA wheatbelt). The effect of too much CO2 in the atmosphere is becoming all too obvious. I doubt that Derek is really an enthusiast for CO2. Climate sceptics have been bleating about the word “pollutant” for years in the hope of distracting us. Does Derek want CO2 to keep rising? After humans recovered from the last ice age 10,000 years ago, atmospheric CO2 mostly hovered around 280 parts per million (ppm) but when I was born it had risen to 311 ppm. Today it is 32% higher (413 ppm) and rising. Many science fiction stories involve creating new planetary atmospheres suitable for humans (terraforming), but it is amazing that a real species is trashing its own habitat (terrorforming?) in the blink of a geological eye. Serious damage to humanity will show up in a few decades, but already we can see some effects - 374 excess deaths in Victoria’s 2009 heatwave and serious decline in rainfall in southwest WA. In 2017 a US government report estimated that climate change in the last decade had cost the USA $350 billion. Yes, CO2 is a pollutant. David Lowry Conondale
Passing of Diane Ryan
Well known Spiritualist Church reverend, clairvoyant/medium, meditation leader and community volunteer Diane Ryan passed away in late January. A memorial service for Diane is planned on March 23 and an invitation is extended to those who would like to attend. Diane was a generous beautiful person who gave so much to people and she still had had so much to give but her spirit will live on in our memories and her good deeds will not be forgotten. It was when Dianne volunteered with the sick and elderly through the Red Cross she realised she had a calling as a healing channel. Many people on the Sunshine Coast and hinterland benefited from her powerful healing and were helped on their path to personal growth and as healers through Diane’s reiki, spiritual healing, regular meditation sessions and one-toone support and guidance. She was passionate about Wildlife Warriors at Australia Zoo and donated her time as a volunteer and the money she received from her meditation sessions. In her later years she became a reverend serving and leading several spiritualist churches on the Sunshine Coast, continuing her work for others in healing and meditation sessions, even as her own health declined. If you would like more detail about the memorial service, I can be contacted on 0418 151 269. All welcome. James Wright

International Women's Day Dusk on the Deck
The Zonta Club of Blackall Range hosted its fourth Dusk on the Deck at the Maleny Community Centre last Friday night. The annual event celebrates International Women’s Day, Zonta International’s Rose Day and the announcement of the Woman of Achievement award. This year’s very deserving recipient was the chair of Range Care, Pat Habner, who was heartily congratulated on the night by representatives from the range’s many community organisation as well as past recipients of the award, Pam Marsden and Norma McLeod, for her amazing contribution to the hinterland community. Pat has been the chair of Range Care, as it is now known, since it became a company in 2016 and previously was vice president of Blackall Range Care for a couple of years. All of Pat's work has been voluntary and she has dedicated thousands of hours to ensuring that Range Care is ready to manage the changes brought on by the My Aged Care funding model. Her employment background is in business administration and she devotes much time and energy to providing voluntary assistance to various clubs and organisations in managing their governance issues and in strategic planning.

Lee-Ann Davey If you have ever had your car serviced by D&F Auto in Landsborough, you would have had the pleasure of dealing with owner Lee-ann Davey. Along with her mechanic husband Barry, Lee-ann is one of the first friendly faces you’ll see when visiting the shop. Originally from Tasmania, Lee-ann and Barry have called Queensland home for the past 20 years and have owned and operated their Landsborough-based mechanical repair shop for the past nine years. While Barry manages the mechanical side of things, Lee-ann takes care of reception and everything in between. After spending 14 years as a personal carer in a nursing home, Lee-ann was keen for a career change and decided to help build and work within their family business. She says that at D&F Auto
they pride themselves on offering friendly, local service solutions and no job is too big or too small. Basically, if it’s mechanical, they can fix it! When she is not busy working at D&F Auto, Lee-ann enjoys fishing, taking scenic motorbike rides (as a passenger only) and is also an avid gardener. Melody Rautio Melody is a chef and owner of The Real Food Lady. With ten years industry experience, Melody caters for weddings, festivals, markets and events with her mobile food trailer, serving up a menu of homemade, honest-to-goodness locally produced food made from the heart. She is also available for grazing platters, private chef dinner parties and picnic set-ups. The idea for the current business originally grew from a small home-based cake and pastry making business that Melody ran when she and her partner lived overseas. Working hard to perfect her cakes and sweets for local cafes, the business took off before she knew it. When the couple returned to Australia it made sense to continue the venture. Requests then followed for catering and Melody found herself in
demand for events, weddings and festivals. Last year she purchased the food trailer and is now able to offer real food to local customers. Making everything themselves, the business uses as many local ingredients as possible and wherever possible they try to support other local small businesses. Creating “real honest food” is definitely a passion for Melody. She loves to feed people well and loves the local region with its abundance of quality produce and producers.

Clean Up Australia Action What a fantastic effort
Contributed by Rose Daley, Event co-ordinator
This year we had a fantastic Clean Up Australia Day at Beerwah / Bells Creek with very keen locals wanting to clean up what they drive past every day. We filled a huge skip bin, or I should say it was overflowing, and collected more than 50 tyres found in the bush and dirt tracks, a lot of household rubbish dumped in the bushland, TVs, furniture, household appliances, clothing, toys, bikes, tyres and car parts. A huge thanks goes to the people who volunteered their time to do this community clean up and help make this a better place for us all to live in. Your efforts are really appreciated and sincerely
hope you can be on board again next year. Many thanks go to McDonalds Glasshouse, which supplied 50 cheeseburgers and 50 sundaes. Also to IGA Beerwah for supplying refreshments for the thirsty volunteers, to Daleys Turf for supplying vehicles for the pick-up crew to load up, to Bakers Packaging who thoughtfully supplied good sturdy gloves for the volunteers and to ACW Sunshine for generously giving lollies to the children and adults who needed a sugar fix. The sponsors help make this a worthwhile event and all the volunteers sincerely thank you for supporting our efforts in cleaning up Australia. Job well done everyone.
A huge thank you to everyone who supported and contributed to the Clean Up Australia Day event in Mooloolah on March 3 with Friends of the Forest team. Even though it was a rainy and windy day there was plenty of energy, smiles and friendly community collaboration. The event finished with a delicious barbeque picnic lunch in the park courtesy of sponsors Mooloolah IGA, Mooloolah Meats and Homestyle Bakers.
It is hoped everyone will keep the neighbourhood rubbish free every day of the year to help protect our local native flora and fauna. You can join the Friends of the Forest (Steve Irwin Way Forest group) Facebook page to stay up to date with events and information and ways to take action in support of the environment.
Clean up success
Contributed by Leanne Young The Beerwah State High School Student Council hosted a Youth Clean Up Day by participating in a Schools Clean Up event on Wednesday, March 5. There was a flurry of eager volunteers signing on at the front of the PA bloc at the beginning of first break. Students could be seen grabbing their gloves or pick up stick and their official clean-up bag and heading to various locations within the school grounds.
Community united at Mooloolah
Some clean-up groups were sent to the far reaches of the school grounds where plastic wrappers, cling wrap and various other waste materials congregate after being blown away. Other groups assisted the lunchtime crowds with their newly created lunchtime waste, and others walked the school boundary. The Student Council would like to thank all of the volunteers who helped make this the most successful school clean-up event in the past four years.
Students take action Contributed by Debbie Roberts
As part of Clean Up Australia Day students at Beerburrum State School donned their hats and gloves and headed out to the school grounds to clean up our school. The students approached this task with plenty of enthusiasm and we are proud to announce only a minimal amount of rubbish was found. Well done students! 22

Senior MOMENTS A HAPPY HOME IN THE HINTERLAND
Residents at Landsborough Pines for just over a year, Syl and Raye are now a part of the Landsborough Pines community in their brand-new architecturally designed home.
The couple previously lived on Bribie Island for 23 years before selling their home to travel Australia. Raye explained, “It’s a nice little community, it’s not a very busy area and that’s what I like after living on Bribie. Bribie became very busy and very touristy.” When they returned home from their most recent adventure, they decided it was time to settle into a place of their own, closer to their family. After striking up a conversation
with the Landsborough Pines park manager at the local markets, Syl and Raye visited the park and eventually moved in. Landsborough Pines provides over 55s an attractive independent retirement lifestyle in a peaceful bushland setting. Residents own their homes and pay a weekly site fee that is subsidised by Commonwealth Rent Assistance for those eligible. The grounds are kept secure and maintained by full-time on-site management.
“The community here in the park, it’s a nice community, very close knit. People can come and join in at functions or they can

pool and other great facilities for them to enjoy when they come visit. “They love to come and see the ducks down at the pond,” Raye says.
The couple are keen gardeners and very involved in the community Gardening Club. “We have herbs and salad vegies that we grow. It’s very popular with the residents, we all help to run the garden.”
Raye explains that one of the best things about living at Landsborough Pines is how accessible the location is. “We have everything here. Medical clinics, dentists, bakeries, news agencies, coffee places, it’s all only a few hundred metres away. The rail station is close by and it’s easy to get to the highway if we want to go up or down the coast.”
After coming off a big property, Syl and Raye are enjoying having a more manageable home. “We’re nice and comfortable. Our house is the Katherine design and the living area is lovely for two people.” With two young grandchildren only 5 minutes away, Landsborough Pines has a

Preserve your music and movies
Do you have video or sound recordings that you want to preserve? Sunshine Coast Libraries will have movie and music preservation stations from March 18–29 from 9.30am-4.30pm each day for tech savvy seniors to digitise cassettes, vinyl records and home movies. Tech Savvy Seniors Queensland is a program funded by Telstra and the Queensland Government, led by the State Library of Queensland. You can digitise vinyl records (33, 45 and 78 rpm), cassettes (standard compact cassettes), VHS tapes (standard VHS size) and camcorder tapes (mini DV size). You need to have intermediate computer skills to operate a Windows laptop. If you are not confident using technology, you will need to bring someone who is with you to help. There is no cost to use the service but you will need to reserve a spot by phoning 5475 8989 or email libraries@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au.
Advamced Care Planning Australia reported a significant surge in calls to its advisory service in 2018 from people seeking advice about taking active control of their future health care. With people living longer and increasingly with complex health concerns, there is growing public interest in advance care planning. People contacting Advance Care Planning Australia had concerns and questions about how they can ensure their preferences are heard and respected. Funded by the Australian Government, Advance Care Planning Australia has operated a free nationwide advisory service since July 2014. It supports individuals, families and healthcare professionals with specialised advance care planning information, research and advice. Dr Karen Detering, medical director of Advance Care Planning Australia, said it was great to see more interest in advance care planning, which previously had not been well understood in Australia. “Our role is to support people to make the best choices for their life and health care, based on their personal values and beliefs,” Dr Detering said. “It’s what we would want for ourselves and our loved ones.” Advance Care Planning Australia's advisory service can help people navigate the complexities
of advance care planning, offers specialist advice on issues such as how to start the conversation and helps with forms relevant to each state and territory, as well as Dr Karen Detering, documenting preferences in an advanced care directive. Those seeking help include people with early dementia or a life-limiting disease, such cancer, who want to make plans for their future health care, people with ageing parents and younger individuals keen to document their preferences in the event of an unexpected medical emergency. “We can’t control everything about ageing but good advance care planning can help people and their families prepare for a time when they can no longer make their own medical decisions. Just like completing a will, advance care planning can help people face the future with greater confidence, knowing that their choices will be respected,” Dr Detering said. The Advance Care Planning Australia advisory service is available on 1300 208 582, 9am–5pm (AEST), Monday-Friday.

Fixed Fee Intitial Consultation Available Beerwah Law, formerly King Tobin Lawyers, are your local solicitors and have been established in Beerwah for over 30 years. Tracy King and her team are here to advise and assist you in legal areas relevant to Seniors including estate planning, estate administration, Wills, Enduring Powers of Attorney, Advance Health Directives and entry and exit into retirement villages. We are a general practice and therefore we cover most areas of the law for you. We are ‘Your Lawyers For Life’.
Wills To ensure that the administration for your estate is as easy as possible for your loved ones we strongly recommend that a qualified solicitor draft your Will for you. Unfortunately, the courts are full of matters which are being litigated purely because a ‘home-made Will’ cannot be interpreted sensibly, has various interpretations or has not adequately considered all matters required. A well drafted Will also takes into account matters other than assets within the estate, such as superannuation and life insurance, to ensure
that all of your assets are dealt with consistently. Importantly, a general discussion with us about the nature and extent of your assets and liabilities and our advice to you in that regard, can save your executors a great deal of time, money and stress.
Enduring Power of Attorney It is our opinion that everyone must have an Enduring Power of Attorney. In some respects, it is more important than a Will, as without one you may be left in a state of legal limbo with no-one able to legally look after your financial affairs or make health decisions for you. This, unfortunately, regularly happens to people who do not have an Enduring Power of Attorney and who find themselves in hospital but are assessed as not being able to return home. If they are incapable of making an Enduring Power of Attorney then an Application needs to be made through QCAT to the Guardianship and Administration Tribunal for an Order. Such an Order can take a considerable period of time and involves a great deal of work. It also can lead to ill-will and disputes between your loved ones.
Estate Administration This is a core part of our practice. We make this process as easy as is possible in your circumstances and tailor our service to your needs. Executors of estates are subject to very onerous obligations. We ensure that these obligations are fulfilled and that there are therefore no adverse implications for you. Please contact us to discuss your legal needs and make an appointment for us to assist you.

Service that is helping to bring the generations together
Have you heard of the notfor-profile service ‘Find a grandparent’ that connects young families with surrogate grandparents? Recently GC&M News was contacted by a Beerwah mum who is keen for her daughter, whose grandparents live overseas, to have a grandparent figure in her life. The mum wants to let our readers to know about the ‘Find a grandparent’ website and the service, which was established in 2012 and operates Australia-wide. Anyone over the age of 45 years who is fit and active, loves young families and would enjoy giving them some of their time can register for free on the ‘Find a Grandparent’ website. However, a national police check at the prospective grandparent’s cost is required. The website provides advice on the options that are available to complete this and costs range from $22-$42. Young families who want to join pay a $40 membership fee for six months. After this period the family can extend their subscription free of charge until they find a connection. These days many families are spread out across the country and the world, so this is an opportunity to develop those positive relations across the generations. If you would like to know more about how the service works and how to get started, go to the website at www.findagrandparent.org.au.

The local over 50s community can learn the secrets to downsizing from Australia’s leading residential property expert, Andrew Winter, at Living Gems Caboolture Riverfront’s free lifestyle expo on Saturday, March 16. Presented in conjunction with aged care and home care provider PresCare, Mr Winter, a TV personality, author and retirement property specialist, will share his insights and knowledge on how people can live their best life in retirement including the positives to downsizing and what to expect when you move into a lifestyle resort. Living Gems general manager Vlad Pullich said Living Gems was thrilled to welcome Mr Winter to its expo at Caboolture. “Andrew Winter is a highly respected name when it comes to property. He has a wealth of knowledge on the implications of downsizing and the emotional impact this significant decision can have on your life,” Mr Pullich said. “With a third of Caboolture’s population aged over 50 we think this issue is very relevant to our local community. “There are different retirement living models for active over 50s and we believe that investing in Living Gems is every bit an investment in your physical wellbeing as well as your financial wellbeing. “I would encourage anyone thinking about retirement living options to come along and hear what he has to say,” Mr Pullich said. Local volunteers for Alzheimer’s research
Sunshine Coast residents aged 65 years or older are needed for a new research study that aims to identify early brain changes that could signal the development of Alzheimer’s disease. The study will be led by Associate Professor Mathew Summers and Dr Kathryn Broadhouse from the Sunshine Coast Mind & Neuroscience Thompson Institute at the University of the Sunshine Coast. Professor Summers, who leads the ageing and dementia research centre at the institute, said cutting-edge brain scanning techniques with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) would be used to identify microscopic changes in brain connectivity and function. “These tiny changes can only be picked up by an MRI and can signal the emergence of dementia long before the more obvious changes in cognitive function appear in the form of memory loss,” Professor Summers said. The research study requires local volunteers who are 65 and older and able to attend assessments and brain scans at the Thompson Institute at Birtinya. Volunteers should be either a healthy older adult; an older adult experiencing significant problems with one or more of the following issues - memory, attention, concentration, word finding or speed of thinking; or an older adult diagnosed with early stage Alzheimer’s disease within the past two years. Professor Summers said volunteers will be required to undertake an initial screening over the phone to ensure their suitability to take part in the research work and, once that’s completed, we’ll need them to come to the Thompson Institute first for a cognitive assessment and then again for an MRI scan. “The results of all assessments will be provided in full to participants so they can share the findings with their GP for further review,” he said. Older residents interested in participating in the study are encouraged to contact Professor Summers via email msummers@usc.edu.au or on 5456 3758.

By Sonia Clark Do you enjoy music (old and the latest beat), want to meet others and keep fit? Why not consider joining the weekly Still stompin’ classes at Landsborough or Maleny? Facilitated by Julie Allen, the popular class has been running for near four years and provides a fun and fabulous way to get fit. Newcomers are always welcome to come along and give it a go. Julie explains that the weekly class is a welcoming bunch of friendly people who like to move to the beat of great music. “The group is really friendly and we often have coffee catch ups after class as well as outings as

Lake Eyre
The last time Lake Eyre filled I was one of the lucky ones to see it from the air and I still rave about the experience, so I am delighted to advise that it’s happening again! The opportunity to see Lake Eyre, the western rivers and the channel country in flood is only happening for a short time. Both travel options below start next month, so this is a real pack and go opportunity! I believe both experiences are equally worthwhile. Travelling in a 4WD coach with Australian Pacific Tours (APT), the seven days/six nights (ex Adelaide) Lake Eyre and the Flinders Ranges package is priced from $3,995 per person and includes a scenic flight over Lake Eyre. You travel via Port Augusta, Marree, Lake Eyre and Birdsville. On the return journey you stay two nights in Wilpena Pound and one night in the Clare Valley, then finish at Adelaide Airport. (Domestic return fare to be added.)
Wilpeena Pound The second package comes from old friends Travel West with a two-day Lake Eyre and Coober Pedy weekend deal for $3,145 per person twin share, ex Brisbane. This trip departs on Saturday at 6.30am, taking you on two very full days before returning to Brisbane on Sunday at 7pm. Your aircraft is a Metro 23 – a single aisle aircraft – so all 17 guests have a window seat. This trip is escorted by Graham Reid, whose intimate knowledge will fascinate as you follow the trail of the rivers that fill Lake Eyre. Highlights include morning tea in Charleville; lunch at the Birdsville Hotel; and an overnight stay and dinner at the unique Desert Cave Hotel in Coober Pedy, with your choice of sleeping in an underground or above ground room. You will visit the Kanku-Breakaways Conservation Park and enjoy a glass of wine at sunset. As you depart Coober Pedy on Sunday, you again fly over Lake Eyre and the Marree Man before lunch at Thargomindah and then return to Brisbane. Federal Member for Fisher Meet me at my barbeque listening post As part of my commitment to listening to you, I will be holding a barbeque and listening post at Glass House Mountains, outside the Information Centre on Reed St, from 3.30pm-5pm on Friday, March 15. Come along and tell me about the issues that are important to you over a sausage. For catering purposes, please RSVP to andrew.wallace.mp@aph.gov.au. Maleny Golf Club This month I announced a $200,000 grant to help people in Maleny to stay fit and active, and to draw many new tourists to our region, by funding the construction of the last six holes at Maleny Golf Club. The Maleny community have worked very hard over 20 years to get their first 12 holes built, and I was very pleased to be able to help them complete this fantastic community facility. We also know that golfers will travel a long way to try a new course. With 18 holes, the challenging and picturesque Maleny Golf Club will bring golfers from all over Australia and provide a boost for local businesses. Out and about I constantly take part in a variety of events in the hinterland, meeting people who are doing great things in our community. This month was no exception. Despite two weeks in Canberra, I have taken part in a Mooloolah Valley Community Association Q&A, the Landsborough State School chaplaincy dinner, and Maleny’s Milkin’ It for Charity. I have presented a flag to Mooloolah Valley State School and attended the Palmwoods Community and Business Association general meeting, the Mooloolah Valley Business and Community discussion, and the opening of Daniel Morecombe House. I have held listening posts at Palmwoods, Landsborough and Maleny, and a coffee catch up in Beerwah. Thank you to everyone who has shared their feedback at one of these many events. Fisher community awards Thank you also to everyone who nominated someone for my Fisher community awards. We have many hinterland finalists including Rose Gould of Beerwah and Maleny Libraries and Libby Haines of Peachester State School, nominated in the Fisher student of the year category, as well as Art on Cairncross and The Dance Academy, both in the business category. Other hinterland finalists include Glass House Mountains’ Ivon Northage, Maleny’s Athol Johnston and Beerwah’s Iris Usher who have been nominated in Fisher senior of the year, the Palmwoods Singers Theatrical Society’s Little Village Choir, and Maleny Meals on Wheels. Congratulations to our wonderful finalists. I look forward to welcoming all of them to my awards night ceremony on March 28. Check for details of the winners in my next column. State Member for Glass House Maleny really did milk it for charity! On Saturday, March 2, the race that stopped the hinterland saw hundreds of gumboots stomp through the paddocks of Maleny Dairies to watch the annual Maleny’s Milkin’ it for Charity cow race. The event helps to raise funds for Chappy Beck from Maleny and Conondale state schools so she can continue her fantastic work five days a week for the rest of the year. There was plenty of community spirit to be seen as champagne glasses were clinked, cheese platters devoured and gumboots and cow patties flung across the fields in competitive games (when will the Olympics committee adopt this as an official sport?). Every year, Maleny and the surrounding communities continue to prove themselves as a community-minded region and I am always delighted to be a part of this event.
Local heroes grants The first round of my local heroes grants for 2019 closed last week and after much deliberation, I have finally chosen the winners. There were so many worthy contenders to choose from, I ended up choosing five winners instead of four. A drumroll for the winners please … • Glasshouse Mountains RSL Sub Branch, which is planning to buy an automated external defibrillator and some resuscitation mannequins to provide free CPR classes. They will use this grant to help promote the classes and provide refreshments. • Blackall Range Lions Club will use its grant to help cover set-up costs for events such as sausage sizzles. The club currently does not have a sausage sizzle kit, so they should be able to buy one now. • Mainly Music Maleny (run by Maleny Baptist Church) is a new music and play group for families in our community. This grant will allow it to provide a shade cover for the playground to keep kids sun safe. • Sunshine Coast U16 girls’ representative soccer team will now be able to buy training shirts and contribute more towards their team building camp. • Last but not least I will be supporting the Obi Art Prize for 2019. Round two closes on Monday, May 2, so if you’re eyeing off a local hero grant, now’s the time to get your applications in. glass.house@parliament.qld.gov.au www.andrewpowell.com.au Search us on Facebook Andrew Powell

Division 5 - Sunshine Coast Mooloolah business and community breakfast The monthly Mooloolah business and community breakfast meeting will now be a quarterly event, with the first scheduled for 7.30am on Thursday March 7. Subsequent meetings will be held on June 6, October 3 and next year on February 6. Following feedback from residents, meetings will now be held at the Mooloolah Public Hall. Both federal and state members are invited as I believe all three levels of government need to take a collaborative approach to ensure that Mooloolah capitalises on all opportunities to improve and focus on forward planning for the township. Tunnel Ridge Road This project continues to challenge the Queensland Police Service (QPS) and council. Council officers are currently undertaking analysis of speed data collected on Tunnel Ridge Road in Mooloolah Valley. Council now has a tool that analyses speed data and detects trends of speed, identifying times of day and days of the week when speeding is prevalent. This data will then be shared with QPS for enhanced enforcement activities. As a reminder, please drive safely and to the conditions of the road. I also ask that everyone please show respect to the local residents of Tunnel Ridge Road. Celebrating our amazing food and produce I was fortunate to join several members of the Food and Agricultural Network (FAN) in support of the Meet the Makers 2019 event, a celebration of the greater Sunshine Coast’s amazing food and produce. Division 5 is home to many regional food businesses, and this is a wonderful initiative for the food industry and our wider community. Along with council, I’m incredibly proud of FAN, the fastest growing food industry not-for-profit network in Australia, and I thoroughly enjoy supporting our Sunshine Coast businesses as they showcase their delicious products to buyers.
Clean Up Australia Day’s volunteer record On Sunday, March 3 locals came out in record numbers to participate in Clean Up Australia Day. Our coast had an estimated 1630 registered volunteers, a 10% increase on last year’s numbers. The equivalent of 1143 bags, or 15.9 tonnes, of general rubbish were collected and 60 bags, or nearly 1 tonne, of recyclables. I’d like to share my enthusiastic gratitude for all those who came out and joined this national clean-up effort, and particularly thank our wonderful community groups for organising the localised clean ups. Health &Beauty Prepare your feet for hiking With Carly O’Donoghue Hiking season is coming and foot preparation is vital. Whether you are walking 5km through the bush or challenging yourself in a 48km event, if you don’t have the correct socks and footwear your feet can deteriorate quickly. Socks Be careful with socks that are too thick as they may fill the toe box of your shoe and press your toes together, leading to an abnormal gait. If you are double socking, the first pair should be moisture absorbing and the second pair should counteract the friction. I wear a compression sock (FS4) that provides arch support and moisture control. However, it is best to trial different socks to know what suits your needs before a long hike.
Footwear Research suggests a trail runner shoe is the most supportive for a hike compared with a hiking boot. This is due to the tread on the shoe being able to grip the dirt as you go down hills. Also, the make of the shoe is more like a jogger and therefore better conforms to the foot. If you are currently hiking or want more hiking tips, phone Stepping Out Podiatry and ask to talk to Carly.

Help bring epilepsy out of the shadows During March you can join Epilepsy Queensland patron Wally Lewis (pictured) and thousands of other Queenslanders, businesses and schools to support Purple Day for Epilepsy. Purple Day on March 26 is the highlight event for the month-long national epilepsy awareness campaign. It is an opportunity to have fun with all things purple, the internationally recognised colour for epilepsy, and at the same time help raise funds and increase understanding of one of the world’s most common serious brain disorders.
This year, Epilepsy Queensland hopes to raise $100,000, which represents $1 for every Queensland child and adult living with epilepsy. Funds raised will help Epilepsy Queensland reach out to more people with epilepsy and their families to provide ongoing support, information and advocacy services. To help achieve this target, people are encouraged to get involved by hosting purple themed fundraising events such as morning teas, buy or sell merchandise or collect donations. Anyone can get involved by wearing purple on Purple Day and sharing a purple selfie featuring one of the many purple illuminated landmarks across the state or at the Purple Day celebration event. To get involved or for more information visit and register online at www.epilepsyqueensland.com.au/purple-day, call 1300 852 853 or email purple@epilepsyqueensland.com.au.

Out & About Women roared at the Orangery Mix FM’s Caroline Hutchinson isn’t someone to hold back when she has something to say, which made her the perfect guest speaker at the International Women’s Day event held at The Orangery Maleny last Wednesday. Not only did she give the packed house of local women something to think about with her words, she also managed to get everyone on their feet and belting out the Helen Reddy anthem, ‘I am woman hear me roar’. The high tea was a fundraiser for the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre and the inspiring morning was a great success with $1,500 raised on the day.

Milkin' it for fun
It was the race that stopped Maleny and raised much needed funds for Maleny State School chaplain, Rebecca Francis. More than 350 people gathered for the Milkin’ It For Charity event at Maleny Dairies and cheered on their cows as they raced to the finish line! Racegoer fashion rivalled that of any Melbourne Cup event with spectators sporting gorgeous dresses, spectacular fascinators and, of course, their gumboots. The day also saw a splash of celebrity, with a visit from actor Myles Pollard, formerly of ‘McLeod’s Daughters’, who answered questions, posed for photos and was a willing participant in the gumboot throwing contest. The day was a huge success, with all proceeds ensuring that Chappy Bec can continue to support the community at Maleny State School.

For tens of thousands of years humans relied on insects for everyday sustenance and today in many Eastern countries edible insects are part of normal cuisine. As the West turns to more sustainable practices for food production, cricket protein can be a great way to boost the goodness in your diet, without leaving an ecological impact. Maleny IGA is giving you the chance to learn all about crickets and how to use them in cooking at a free two-hour workshop on Saturday, March 30, from 11am-1pm at the Maleny Community Centre verandah room. During the food event, chefs Lucas Becker and Pedro Da Silva will show you how to make easy, delicious food with crickets. You can watch, learn and taste as these chefs whip up protein-enriched, delicious smoothies, pumpkin and chocolate cricket cake (sugar free), cricket crackers and salsa, and a surprise recipe. You will also discover a whole new world within the edible insect industry including how crickets are farmed, what resources are required to farm them and the ecological benefits as well as the nutritional profile. To book a place at the workshop go to the Eventbrite website and search for Food events: Cookin' with crickets, email info@myfoodculture.com or phone 0411 581 945 (please note online bookings take first preference).

In the Garden Ask Brownie
I have a flock of ibis regularly foraging around my back yard. I am sure this is not a bad thing, but does it suggest I may have a lawn problem? Ross Glass House Mountains Hi Ross, What you’ve got there are straw-necked Ibis, which are a different species of ibis from the more common Australian white ibis that people call ‘dump birds’ or ‘bin chickens’. Straw-necked ibis are long-distance flyers and will fly thousands of kilometres in response to seasonal and environmental condition changes. They are also called the ‘farmer’s friend’ as they are often seen flocking in paddocks, fields and pastures eating grasshoppers, grubs and other agricultural pests. So I think you may be right … they’ve found something to their liking in your lawn. They have a wide range of tastes and will eat grasshoppers, crickets and spiders, as well as aquatic invertebrates, crustaceans, fish, frogs, small reptiles and even small mammals such as mice. In your case, I’d say they’ve come across something that is responding to you watering and looking after your lawn, such as earthworms, curl grubs or even crickets. They tend to be rather nomadic in the non-breeding season so it’s likely they’ll move on pretty soon. Australia has one other species of ibis – the glossy Ibis. This is a striking bird that has an iridescent greeny-browny-black plumage. You won’t see them very often as they tend to shy away from human habitats and stick to swamps and marshes. However, it is the most widely spread of the ibises, being found in Europe, Asia and Africa.

Variety of garden mixes available for all your gardening needs
The blue flax lily, or dianella, is a flowering perennial plant often cultivated in home gardens. Native to the northeast coast of NSW, dianella can also be found in South East Queensland. Dianella is a fairly small plant, though it can grow up to 1m in height and 2.5m in width. A hardy and long-lived plant, it can survive in a range of conditions, including frost and wet areas, though it prefers dry soil. The plant is often cultivated in home gardens and public spaces as it is fairly low maintenance, low hedging and is well liked for its beautiful blue-purple flowers. The flowers are star-shaped and form in loose clusters at the end of its branches. The flowers of dianella will turn into fruit resembling blueberries. For this, dianella is also known as the blueberry lily. The fruit is edible but it may be harmful in higher quantities. It can be eaten raw or cooked. The rhizomes can also be pounded and roasted.

From the churches Love our enemies?
We all have people in our lives who annoy us and intentionally or unintentionally hurt us. We may believe we have a right to be upset, hurt or angry with someone. So how do we treat those who have upset us? The great American civil rights leader Martin Luther King preached on the topic of loving your enemies. He was in gaol at the time, imprisoned for campaigning for civil rights for American Negroes. During his lifetime, he had received death threats, he’d been maliciously accused of being a communist, his house had been bombed and he was jailed more than 20 times. Yet, after all this he was able to say “hate multiplies hate ‌ in a descending spiral of violenceâ€? and is “just as injurious to the person who hatesâ€? as to the victim. However, he said love â€œâ€Ś is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friendâ€? for it has “creativeâ€? and “redemptiveâ€? power. Jesus says in the Gospel of Luke: “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse

Free financial literacy workshop
Women aged over 55 years who would like to expand their financial management knowledge are encouraged to attend a free financial literacy workshop on Thursday, March 28 at the Buderim Tavern. The workshop will be run by the Australian Shareholders’ Association from 9am–12.30pm. The general aim of the workshop is to empower older women with an understanding of basic financial and investment concepts. The workshop is free and funded by a federal grant. It was developed after research showed increasing life expectancy and divorce among older women who had never been involved in managing their finances or investments. Book early as numbers are limited. To register or for more information call 1300 368 448 or go to www.australianshareholders.com.au/fin-lit-project. The Buderim Tavern is in Main Street, Buderim and there is free parking available on site. Morning tea will be provided.
CONDITIONS: To ensure all community notices can be printed each month please keep your contributions to a maximum of 100 words.
Rev Jeanette Jamieson Maleny Uniting Church you, pray for those who abuse youâ€?. He explains further that there is nothing special about only loving those who love us – what is needed is for us to love our enemies, doing good, lending and expecting nothing in return. What a challenge! Jesus calls us to love (ancient Greek - agape) in a selfless and unconditional way, totally desiring the wellbeing of all - friends and enemies. He gave some suggestions on how to love our enemies - doing good, blessing them and praying for them. In 2005 in the UK, Gee Walker’s son Anthony, 18, was murdered by two racist thugs. After their sentencing she said: “I cannot hate. I have to forgive them. Hate is what killed Anthony‌ Their minds must be very torturedâ€?. She said: “I brought up my children ‌ to love ‌ to respect themselves, and respect others. ‌ so it wasn’t hard to forgive because we don’t just preach it, we practise itâ€?. May we all be able to do likewise!

Need a supreme clean? Rob and Charlene Orchard are the couple behind the independently owned and operated family business Suncoast Supreme Cleaning Services. With more than five years professional cleaning experience, Rob and Charlene reckon they have cleaned thousands of metres of carpet and upholstery. As well as removing the usual dirt and debris, they are successful with hard to remove substances such as paint, nail polish, makeup, wax, glitter, slime, ink, food and drink, blood, oil and grease. Services include steam cleaning for carpets, rugs, upholstery and mattresses. They also provide leather cleaning and conditioning, stain and odour removal, fabric protection, dust mite treatments and tile and grout cleaning. The couple says steam cleaning provides the best restorative cleaning process available for soft furnishings, as it delivers a deep flushing clean with hot water while powerful vacuums extract the dirty water. Using a minimum of four steps for a truly restorative clean (including pre-vacuuming), dry times for standard cleaning can be as little as 2-4 hours. With Australian Federal Police clearances and the ability to provide services outside normal business hours to accommodate busy and unusual schedules, Rob and Charlene proudly provide top quality services to local aged care facilities, schools, cafes and local community organisations. For more information, please call 0491 075 652 or email suncoastsupremeclean@gmail.com.

Maleny Golf Club
Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker
Two of our players played away on the weekend of March 2-3. Donna Manning returned to Bribie for the Steve Jones tournament and was lucky enough to be playing Steve in the first round. Considered one of the best players in the world, this was a great experience for Donna. Ken Barker went to Toowoomba and played in the Rene Cole memorial tournament as part of the Darling Downs regional event. On Sunday, March 3, between showers of rain and on a soggy lawn, Brenda and Gary Winter played a game of golf croquet with no result recorded, though the advice from onlookers was that Brenda appeared to be ahead. Nick Cram and Vince Carbery also braved the elements to fight out a 15–7 result with Nick ahead. A Range Care group of 18 visited on Tuesday, March 5, and had morning tea and a game on the lawn. Conditions were benign with only the odd shower punctuating sunny, pleasant spells. This is a wonderful group to play with. Come down to the lawn on the first Tuesday of the month and improve your hoop running skills playing golf with them. You’ll enjoy it. The photograph shows Ted Singleton in our first division tournament last year finishing a game by peeling the red ball through rover while sending the yellow ball to a pioneer at hoop three back. He still had to make hoops three and four back, penultimate and rover with yellow, then peg both balls out. He did that with ease. Coaching for beginners and others is available on the picturesque lawns at the bottom of the Maleny Showgrounds from 8-10am on Saturdays. These are popular sessions in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Play days are at 2.10pm for 2.30pm on Thursdays and Sundays. For details contact president Vince Carbery 5494 2193 or secretary Priscilla Vickers 5494 3555.

Maleny Bowls Club
Contributed by Miles Allen We have had another great week of bowls at Maleny. Last week on Tuesday morning, Wednesday evening and Friday afternoon the club was busy with bowlers. It’s great to see so many people enjoying themselves and trying to get as close as possible to perfection on the green. We welcomed back some players who had been away and also welcomed some new players who are keen to find out as much as possible about the game and how to play it. Coaching sessions take place for those who want to improve their game. Wednesday’s twilight bowls competition is turning into a night of mixed fortunes. The McKingston Trio are still unbeaten after four games but it’s early days and Paul’s Bridge Club, Mavericks, Handles and the Outlaws are strong contenders. In fact, at this stage
of the season it’s still very open and we mustn’t forget the Tutors who are more than capable of pulling something big out of the bag. At Friday’s Scroungers we had another good turn up with some big wins and some close games. Our handicapping system allows all players a good chance of winning. Margaret and Don Ginns both won their games and Margaret took home some chocolates for her accurate bowling. Other winners were Kay Gesch, Ray Elmore and Curley Peterson who were too good on the day. The big news for Maleny Bowls Club this week is that our new lights should be ready for Wednesday night. These will be a great addition to the club. Many thanks to our chair Graeme Glover for all his hard work, our board and everyone who has made this happen. It’s onward and upward on a well lit green.

Auskick and junior AFL training kicks off Contributed by Craig Bales Glasshouse Hinterland Australian Football Club’s Auskick program started last Thursday, March 7, at Tunnel Ridge Road, Landsborough. Club Auskick is for boys and girls aged five and six years and older children who do not want to play club football. It is run over a nine-week period. NAB AFL Auskick is the Australian Football League’s key introductory program for primary school aged children and their families. Sunshine Coast Auskick coordinator Shannon Campbell said Auskick was all about teaching AFL
skills in a friendly, safe environment. “The rules are modified to give children a really gentle introduction to AFL,” Shannon said. “Parents are encouraged to join in all the activities and the kids' faces just light up when they see mum or dad having a kick or taking a mark”. For further information contact Craig on 0414 225 329 or simply rock up on Thursday at 4pm and be ready to have some fun! The club is now in full swing with junior training starting last week. Any boys or girls interested in giving AFL a go should come down on Thursday at 4.30pm to the Landsborough Sports Complex on Tunnel Ridge Rd. We are always keen for more kids to come along to play AFL. We have teams for kids turning seven years in 2019 up to 16 years of age. If you would like further information please contact Craig Bales at 0414 225 329 or email the club at glasshousehinterlandafc@gmail.com.
Witta Tennis Contributed by Pauline Fraley With the threat of rain throughout the day, Maroochydore Sapphires and Witta Wagtails managed to enjoy their tennis, with the Sapphires finishing as winners. Whistlers played at Ballinger against the Breezers. It was very hot and humid. We had very good games with lots of rallies and deuces. We tried hard for every point. In the end we had a good win and had enough for the day with a score of 44-25 games, 7-1 sets. Team was Donna Kuskopf, Aki Lepper, Paula Cudmore and Brenda Warner. The Wildcats were at home to Nambour ZTA Novas. Pauline Fraley, Annie Stewart, Stacey English and Libby Howlett came out strong and continued the pressure for the rest of the day. Just a bit of a hiccup at the end with an injury to one of our players but we were far enough ahead to bring the win home. Final score was 5-3 sets; 36-32 games. First day of the 2019 division two Vets did not
disappoint. The Wikings played Nambas at Witta and renewed their rivalry on a very hot day, with lots of sweating, clothes off, on, off and back on, cramps and fantastic tennis. Almost too close to call in a very enjoyable and friendly match, but the Wikings just got over the line. Thanks to Nambas for the great tennis and thanks to the Wikings for seeing out the day. Check us out at www.wittatennis.com.au for the team photos. The Witta Wompoos made a slow start to the 2019 season with a comprehensive 10-2 sets loss to the Nambour No Worries. The team battled hard in the hot and humid conditions but had little to show for their efforts. Congratulations to the Nambour team who were clearly the better side on the day. A special thanks to John Poole who filled in to complete the team. Social tennis is on Monday at 8am and Saturday at 1pm. All welcome. For court bookings call 0437 295 501 or go to www.wittatennis.com.au.
Glasshouse Country Bowls Club Contributed by David Hayes Wednesday, March 6: Ladies day, champion fours final. This was the first ladies championship for the year, with team of Lee Meyers, Di Garland, Chris Dougan and Rae Farrell defeating Marilyn Podmore, Jenny Morris, Wendy Platt and Chris Freshwater 2013. Well done ladies. This week is our first jackpot triples for the year. After the game and before the presentations, one of our green sponsors, Glasshouse Views, will send a couple of representatives to have a chat to us about what they offer at Glasshouse Views. Please make them feel welcome. Sunday, March 10: Men’s club championship fours, round one - Jack Chirgwin, Brian Saunders, Bill Tumbridge and Rodney Sharpe defeated Terry Little, Brian Squires, Jim Tatum and Barry Kirk 24-11. David Hayes, Len Skerry, Dean Shaw and Graham Richardson defeated Don Teirney, Brett Collinson, Warren Blackbourne and Graham Nicholson 18-10. Bruce Angus, Tony Verdonk, Mac Townson and Rob Scullion defeated Steve Joliffe, Gordon Dyer, Mick Borchers and Vic Muscat 25-9. Bill James, Ron Rix, Lindsay Henderson and Grant Podmore defeated Bob Bloomer, John Annakin, Rodney Dick and Ron Wilson 24-9. In the semi-finals David Hayes, Len Skerry, Dean Shaw and Graham Richardson defeated Jack Chirgwin, Brian Saunders, Bill Tumbridge and Rodney Sharpe 24-20. Bruce Angus, Tony Verdonk, Mac Townson and Rob Scullion 44
defeated Bill James, Ron Rix, Lindsay Henderson and Grant Podmore 31-8. The final is Sunday at 9.30am. Please come and show your support. Some big news for our club. On Saturday and Sunday, March 30-31, we will be hosting a section of the qualifying finals of the Q7s in the morning and afternoon on both days. The format will be two games in the morning and two in the afternoon after lunch. The committee hopes many members and spectators will come down to watch and support these games. We are one of only a few clubs that have the privilege of hosting this event with more than 60 clubs from around the state taking part in this comp. Our division four team currently sits on top of the table but we don’t know yet where they will be playing if they make the finals.

Just for Laughs Wildest dreams
ARIES March 21 - April 20 The Full Moon in Libra comes up on the 20th and occurs in your partnership area. This Moon should bring about a partnership, albeit it romantic or business. The Moon is at the strange zero-degree mark. A very powerful position for a Cardinal sign like yours. Be prepared to act quickly and think on your feet. Still possible lottery wins! TAURUS April 21 – May 21 You are now well and truly in the midst of Mercury retrograde, which won’t turn direct until the 28th. After that date you can move forward with everything that is being delayed right now. The equinox on the 21st is around the Full Moon time in Libra that highlights your daily work routine and way you maintain daily health. GEMINI May 22 - June 23 Until the end of March the planet Venus facilitates your life in all areas of publishing, international travel and higher education. As Venus is in the friendly sign to yours you are feeling more confident and attractive, other people will be attracted to you. You are now realising many delays are caused by Mercury being retrograde now. CANCER June 24 - July 22 There are new opportunities that are coming to the surface for you, but just don’t sign any contracts until after Mercury turns direct on 28th. It is highly likely that very unusual people will enter your circle of friendships between now and 2026 because of the current entry of the planet of drastic changes, Uranus, in the sign of Taurus.

Week Beginning 13/03/2019
Completely stunned by the sudden turn of events, the man asks her what her condition is. "You have to tell me what you want me to do in just three words." The man takes a moment to consider the offer from the beautiful woman. He whips out his wallet and puts $100 in her hand. He then looks her square in the eyes and says slowly and clearly: "Paint my house". Our needs change as we get older and we tend to look for bargains. Noel Myers, Landsborough

LEO July 23 – August 22 There is a Full Moon in Libra on March 20th which falls at a very special zero degrees. This Moon in your chart, highlights the communication area, so there may be news about a speaking project. You may be asked to start a blog or create a website. It is good to do that if you are self-employed. Earn money through a creative endeavour. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 It is a mixed week for you as Venus enters Aquarius and you would just love to have more independent time to go shopping among new creative designs. Don’t spend heavily on high ticket items until after Mercury goes direct on 28th of March. If you are in business double check your schedules as times and dates are likely to change drastically. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 With the planet Mercury going retrograde for the first time this year it will be in the sign of Pisces and in your daily work and duty area. Be sure to communicate clearly with co-workers and arrange pick up times by double checking details. Any rigid habits are now about to be drastically changed under the planet Uranus. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 As the 20th of this month features a Full Moon in the sign of Libra, at zero degrees, it highlights the importance of balance in your closest relationships. With Mercury retrograde in Pisces this highlights your own psyche so dreams could be especially vivid and filled with insights and information. Good time now to revamp your home.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 During this month the planet Uranus is going to change your status and where you have become rigid and habitual. So, this week begins to see you get rid of the dead wood in your life. Anything can happen! There may be a marriage or divorce, loss of job, a new career path, or the birth of a child. In other words, pivotal life events. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 The Full Moon in Libra lights up your professional career area. You become more aware of the need for balance between our personal and professional life. Yes, you may realise you have to start carving out more time for yourself! The planet Uranus is coming up to alter your attitude. Mercury retrograde says “think before you speak”. AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 There are three major events which affect you this week. The planet Uranus is in for a seven-year run in its new sign of Taurus. There is also Mercury retrograde and you will find that the flow of energy reverses until after the 28th when Mercury moves direct again. This Full Moon on the 20th means happy times for you with your special partner. PISCES February 20 - March 20 Let your imagination play with any sensible desires by seeing yourself involved in many new experiences and creative projects coming your way. The planet Uranus is very significant to help you with spectacular advances. The Full Moon in Libra on March 20th brings news about some legal matter or a relationship. A 79-year-old man is having a drink in a pub. Suddenly a gorgeous woman enters and sits down a few seats away. The woman is so attractive that he just can't take his eyes off her. After a short while, she notices him staring, and approaches him. Before the man has time to apologise, the woman looks him deep in the eyes and says to him in a sultry tone: "I'll do anything you'd like. Anything you can imagine in your wildest dreams, it doesn't matter how extreme or unusual it is, I'm game. I want $100 and there's another condition".

Is 2019 your year to SHINE? Smile bright with Dental Excel.... Dr David Marley Dr David Marley has 45 years of extensive experience and has developed a great interest in restorative dentistry and full mouth rehabilitation as well as great belief in the benefits of cosmetic dentistry. “I always believe that a healthy mouth and an attractive smile are a great asset which should be nurtured and valued. Healthy teeth are acknowledged to have a great part to play in
supporting good general health,” David says. David still keeps up to date with new innovations in his field such as his experience with surgical implants. He enjoys sharing this professional knowledge with his patients to assist improving quality of life for all. David said their aim is to provide a comprehensive service to the local community for many years to come.
Dr Finbarr O’Sullivan Dr Finbarr O’Sullivan (BDS) originally qualified in Liverpool in the UK back in 2005. He gained two years experience with the UK’s National Health Service before spending four years in private practice in Ireland. He has a particular interest in and enthusiasm for dental implants; both to replace missing teeth and to retain those
annoying loose dentures. He believes that the huge leaps in technology during recent times have changed the level of treatment on offer. Finbarr also holds a postgraduate certificate in cosmetic restorative dentistry (UK) which gives him the added expertise when restoring a beautiful smile.
Dr Tiffany Chan Dr Tiffany Chan qualified as a dentist at the University of Liverpool UK in 2010 and upon graduating, she went on to work in the Community Dental Service through the National Health Service where she treated many patients with dental phobia, children and special needs patients. This experience enhanced her people skills in putting
people at ease in the dental surgery. She is gentle, great with children and those who just really hate going to the dentist! Tiffany has a great interest in extractions and wisdom teeth removal and has completed an intensive oral surgery course with maxillofacial surgeons in Cambodia.
Dr Shirly Atia Dr Shirly Atia completed her Dental Hygiene Degree in Canada and worked as a dental hygienist for seven years before completing a Bachelor of Dental Surgery at James Cook University in Cairns. She has completed her general practice residency in Queensland Health providing dental care to Indigenous communities.
Shirly is extremely passionate about preventive dentistry but enjoys all areas of dentistry including fillings, crown and bridge, aesthetic dentistry and root canals. Shirly ensures all her patients receive the best possible treatment and is committed to providing high quality dentistry in a warm, gentle and welcoming environment.
Dr Raj Kengaiha Dr Raj Kengaiha was originally educated in India and completed his dental degree at the prestigious Bangalore University in 1997, followed by working in busy dental practices in India before moving with his family to Australia in 2013. Although interested in all aspects of dentistry, Raj has particular passions for endodontic (root
canal treatment) and orthodontic (braces). He is doing additional training in orthodontics, participating in a Mini Residency which formed part of his Excellence of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics (EODO) training. Raj has recently gained accreditation to provide Fastbraces orthodontic treatment – both simple and advanced.
