Coles lodged three development applications (DAs) in 2019 to pave the way for an 11ha centre at the intersection of Steve Irwin Way and Roys Road.
In an affidavit filed earlier this year Coles argued the appeal should be allowed for various reasons including that it was to be built on an “underutilised parcel of land”; the service station and food and drink outlet would support development; there were no other high volume convenience restaurants with a drive-thru near Beerwah on Steve Irwin Way; and the site was well located to provide proposed uses which are regularly

The DAs were all rejected by the council and in August last year Coles appealed those decisions.
Coles lawyers said these and other changes did not result in a substantially different development, but resulted in a better outcome.

Inclusion of 20kL rainwater tanks at front of supermarket entry;
A number of affidavits were filed in regard to a change in the development application. Last year the council rejected the application based in part on expert advice that a third full-line supermarket would not be needed until 2025 to 2030.
It added: “The proposed development supports the regional service function of Beerwah.”
Supermarket feature entry roof to be split into three canopies and larger structural elements exposed, to reinforce a modern country town aesthetic;
The council argued against the development on a number of points including that it was in significant conflict with the council’s vision for economic development regarding activity centres and industry and enterprise areas; and the proposal would create a new retail centre outside the existing Beerwah major regional activity centre and would fragment and undermine the CBD.

Whether people knew Elizabeth II personally, revered her as their Queen, or simply followed the media reports for the last 70 years, she was part of our understanding of the world and a constant in our lives.
This represents so clearly her philosophy of service, and a belief in the role of institutions like the WI (and our QCWA) to help keep communities together. On further research I found that the Queen was a member of the Women’s Institute Sandringham Branch for almost eighty years, attended meetings when in that part of the country, and as the current vice-president has said, “She is
The Queen’s sense of duty was aweinspiring, exemplified last week when she carried out the official swearing in of Britain’s new PM, Liz Truss. We know she had been unwell, and in the photo she appears very frail, but she must have been determined to get up, get dressed, and do her duty. Looking elegant, composed and smiling, she welcomed her new Prime Minister. Then, having carried out this important public duty, two days later she wasQueengone.Elizabeth’s sense of humour is well known, and her delightful tea party with Paddington Bear during the Platinum Jubilee celebrations is a moment to treasure. As children, my sister and I were avid fans of the Royal family, and more particularly of Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret. We were so thrilled; this was the first time a reigning monarch had visited Australia and everyone wanted to see the Queen. My father and uncle had bought a pineapple farm at Beerwah after the Second World War, and the only vehicle they had was a farm truck. So, our family set off to Brisbane in the truck, my parents, aunt and uncle squashed into the front and all the kids in the back. We saw her from two vantage points, and it was without doubt the most exciting thing we had ever done!

GLASSHOUSE Country Men’s Shed benefited in a big way when the Sunshine Coast Council delivered numerous large logs weighing up to a ton each to the Glasshouse Country Men’s Shed. This came about when shed member Dave Logsdale spoke to council removing trees along Steve Irwin Way and was advised to contact Joe at the local council depot. Joe and Dave then initiated the procurement of a few smaller logs for the shed. Upon
visiting the following day, Joe received an informal tour of the shed by members Sandy Woodside and Rick Canhan. The shed was soon to take delivery of a lookingtheywhich(viamillingpurchasednewlymachineagrant)iswhywereforlogs
logs would be put to good use within the community. Glasshouse Country Men’s Shed is a not-for-profit organisation, with much of the supplies they receive coming from within the local community via donations or purchased with funds from either donations and/or grants, which enables the shed to operate.

World War II jeeps hit Simpson Desert in the trip of a lifetime
COMMUNITY NEWS
All the Jeeps have been meticulously restored by their owners and performed as expected. “I have previously traversed the Simpson Desert in modern 4x4’s and was confident the little wartime Jeeps could handle the trip over the desert,” Rick said. Although the Jeeps were made during a war, they were specifically built to handle difficult types of terrain such a this. The life expectancy of a Jeep in a war zone was ninety days and here they are now, almost eighty years old and still going strong; a tribute to the design, construction and durability of these versatile vehicles. Rick explained
Contributed by Rick Canhan
his Jeep was transported to Birdsville on a trailer prior to heading into the desert.
Chris (mainCanhanandNicolasDewar,GrayRickimage)
“Each Jeep was fully fuelled and carried eight jerrycans of extra fuel plus forty litres of water and sufficient supplies for an estimated twelve-day travel. There were two support vehicles on hand for safety reasons, but the concept was for the Jeeps to be totally self-sufficient and handled the trip with ease.” Any breakdowns, (and there were a couple) were fixed practically on the spot or in one of the night locations, he added. Once the group reached the western side of the Simpson Desert it was time to start the trip back home.
Rick stated that a trip over the Simpson Desert is an experience to remember, and believes everyone should at least do it once in their lives. “The tranquilly of the beautiful and endless starry night skies are just unbelievable” he said. “Add to that, the sunrises and sunsets and you have the recipe for a memorable trip.”

It’s birthing season for flying foxes. Time for the females to give birth to one live pup and raise it. This means their numbers in parks and reserves near the coastline may grow, and it’ll get nosier as the young get older and call for their mums. Rest assured, this won’t last forever. Flying foxes are seasonal animals that come and go. Search ‘flying foxes’ on Council’s website for tips on living near flying foxes.

A big thank you to the under 16’s Beerwah Bulldogs Club. They moved furniture for me when I was getting my house back in order after a burst water pipe.
Such a pity that the Lismore residents rejected the possibility of having their rubbish incinerated. Had they seen the video of “Singapore Trash Disposal”, their fears could have been allayed. Switzerland has been doing the same for more than 50 years. This method helps towards heating, power and eliminates rubbish being dumped, especially in the sea/waterways. With technology, that is always evolving, there is practically no toxic emissions. I suggest this video be used as a positive case for consideration. If two small countries can do it, why not us?
It’s been noted that the average committee takes three months to say “no”. If you are in a committee or team - at work, community group, politics or even your family, you will get more success if you start to build a “yes” culture. Open up your organisation. Take risks. People will come alive and surprise you with their creativity
when the management wants to empower rather than control. Train others to do the exciting jobs rather than just the ones you don’t want to do. Celebrate people, allow flow, think in terms of abundance rather than poverty, love not fear. Be transparent. Imagine a society where its parts run freely with creativity rather than control. If you really want to push your team, I’d suggest Fredric Laloux’s book, ‘Reinventing Organisations’.

If there’s anything that sums up the nature of the universe, it is “change”. It is still expanding. In around 500 million years, the earth will crash into the sun, because the sun will enlarge and explode.
Keep riding, Max
I refer to Graeme Tosh’s article “staying informed is the Key” in GC&M News 16
I too am becoming increasingly tired of reading articles sent in to GC&M News and other media outlets each week, by people I call “Arm Chair experts”, (one of whom is Tim Flannery), pushing their views on the general public with all this climate change garbage, and the effects of CO2 on our allegedly dying planet, so I pose the following question;
Many people living with dementia can continue to live well after their diagnosis, but often feel isolated because of the stigma and discrimination associated with dementia. That’s why the theme for Dementia Action Week 2022, 19 – 25 September, is ‘A little support makes a big difference’.
Apart from the money, there is the wellbeing of Maleny residents to consider. An open pool would help us stay fitter and save us the personal cost and time of travelling
I am angry that the pool can not be well utilised for the sake of a small amount of money compared to the contemplated new indoor pool. This problem has existed for three years so why doesn’t the council move on this, instead of expecting a club to find a way of coping? Winston and council must do better!
sustainabilityDemiurges, and poor schools
In his letter of the same issue, John Quinn argued that state funding should be provided to poorer private schools. Yet the state commits funding to an education system that is supposed to be free, secular and compulsory. To assist any non state school is thus a violation of these principles; a misuse of funds in my view. So, John’s argument is one of degree, not principle. Thanks to both gentlemen for their candid comments.
So, the notion of sustainability is untenable. The second law of thermodynamics states that there is always a movement towards decreasing entropy. Things corrode, break down, and we all die. “Sustainable” is one of those soft nouns, which, when examined, collapses into nothingness.
A wonderful lot of lads.
Creativity, not control
Why does the council fail Maleny so badly with the swimming pool? A new pool would cost $8 million minimum, according to our Councillor, Winston. At an interest rate of only 2 per cent, the cost of capital is $180,000 each year. A new pool would come with large running costs too. If we haven’t go the population to justify a new indoor pool, surely we can justify, say, $100,000 per year on a salaried position to provide us with a pool manager? It’s a minimal amount compared to running a new pool. It would be worth it even if this person sat on their thumbs for half the year!
Thankyou Ian Hall for your references to me in your letter of 30 August. Sadly, I see no merit in your argument(s).
It’s not the same for someone who drives down Coonowrin Road regularly. It will never be the same, not to see Max and his horses there.Best wishes to you Max.

If the public were aware that man-made CO2 is so incredibly small that it’s almost impossible to accurately measure, there would be very little belief in a climate disaster. Furthermore, governments and green groups would not be able to justify a carbon tax that will greatly raise the cost of everything, and major international banks and the stock market would not make massive profits out of carbon trading
I think Darwin’s statement is misunderstood too. There are plenty of “transitional” living species around us. As we live in Australia, I name the monotremes. Two egg-laying mammals on our continent are the echidna and the platypus.

If you were to go out in the street and ask Mr or Mrs Average this question, most would say that to some degree, they think it probably is, and why would they say that? Because they have been grossly misled by the media and self- interest clowns like Tim Flannery, to think there are tens of thousands more particles of CO2 in the atmosphere than what there really are.

The number of Australians living with dementia is close to half a million – a number that is set to double in the next 25 years. There are also an estimated 1.6 million people involved in their care.

One of the tenets of science is that a severe economy of explanation is needed when describing and analysing natural phenomena. Ockham’s razor states, Entia non sunt multiplicanda praeter necessitatem, which means, “Entities are not to be multiplied beyond necessity.” In other words, do not describe a thing in more parts than there are constituent parts of the thing. The addition of some kind of master planner or demiurge to the explanations of astronomy and astrophysics does nothing to the efficacy of the physics, and detracts from it.
CO2 is no pollutant
Andrew McLeanMaleny
The correct answer is: CO2 is a harmless, nothing more than a trace element. It is as necessary for life as oxygen and nitrogen are. It is in no way a pollutant.
This year, we encourage communities to come together and learn more about how they can support people living with dementia. AN EXHIBITION reflecting a painter’s life growing up influenced by the gift of the Australian landscape is showing at Mitchell Fine Art in Fortitude Valley from September 6.
With last week’s uncertainty out of the way, this is a much easier week to navigate. Aside from some confusion caused by Mercury’s mischief, you glide through the next few days with barely a glitch, and with generous planets hopefully bringing extra cash. Just don’t spend it all on luxuries - you do need to eat.
Mercury turns retrograde in your sector of house and home. Papers go missing, files are lost, electronics break down. Don’t worry. Delay unnecessary meetings, don’t put your house on the market and try not to travel. You can, however, trash whatever seems outmoded or unproductive. And it wouldn’t hurt to pay extra attention to your health.
Your outlook on life undergoes a major revision right now, particularly as a pensive Mercury has you reassessing relationships. If you no longer share the same values, start finding new friends that truly understand you. Indeed, expect associates to come and go for a while. Life may be unsteady, but you will also feel a sense of relief.

In Northern NSW, west of the Divide, it used to be brigalow scrub, growing on what turned out to be the richest soil in the country - not a coincidence as it happens - but the scrub’s almost all gone, and the job of protecting what’s left falls to environmental officers. Late one afternoon in 2014, out near Croppa Creek, things came to a head. An 80 year old farmer, Ian Turnbull, took out a gun and shot Glen Turner, an environmental officer, in the back. He stood over the wounded man until he was dead, despite the pleas of his companion.

Job satisfaction can be elusive, especially when you’re worried about what next week will bring. It’s not a time for drastic changes, Aquarius. There will always be bills to meet and payments to be made. You can, however, plan for the future. Why not consider retraining, perhaps online study? Current hardships eventually will become future triumphs.

Maleny-based artist Peter Hudson’s exhibition is a homage to whomever your creator may be, an appreciative recognition of what we have and all that we should be grateful for. Peter Hudson is a landscape and portrait painter who lives and works in Maleny. Peter draws largely on contemporary Australian history for inspiration in his art making. Regular painting trips and sketching ‘en-plein air’ form an integral part of his art-making process in capturing the spirit or essence of the “Thelandscape.landscape
Peter said. “Everything is in the right place at the right time. This is a gift for the landscape artist, as all the usual problems and decisions concerning design, tone, colour, what to include, what to leave out etc. have been taken care of.” Peter has been particularly influenced by a keen interest in Aboriginal Australia post colonisation. His paintings and drawings have a deep connection to country and the natural world. Peter Hudson is represented in collections including the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, Parliament House in Brisbane, and the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra. The exhibition is showing from September 6-24 at Mitchell Fine Art in Arthur Street, Fortitude Valley Brisbane.
Holden says she’s not a journalist, but the book won a Walkley Award. She says she’s not a historian, but the book won the NSW Premiers non-fiction award 2022 and is short-listed for the Regional History award. This is an important book, written by one of our finest writers.
Mercury’s back-pedalling could mean your finances are pushed to the extreme, but don’t fret. In recent times, you’ve doled out much monetary kindness and now is the time to call some of those favours in. If you can’t guilt-trip people into submission, you can at least ensure they’ll think twice before asking for your help again.
Kate Holden is the author of two bestselling memoirs, In My Skin and The Romantic. Our introducing author will be Katie McMahon, speaking about her second novel, The Accident. This time Katie reveals the inner lives of Grace, Zoe and Imogen, whose worlds are linked through shared but not always obvious connections. The Accident explores the ways in which our formative years shape our future, examining the influence of unrequited love and the healing power of friendship.

Mercury continues to take the wire cutters to all lines of communication, so forget any presumptuous ideas you had of a flourishing rapport. Nobody’s talking - at least, not in the way you’d like. Brace yourself for another week of detoured payments, dysfunctional diallers and ambiguous agreements.
With your ruling planet, Mercury, at a standstill, projects may be hampered. Someone’s timing is off; or you feel that others are stifling your freedom or deliberately delaying your progress. Nonetheless, you can still maintain focus. For now, short-term projects are more likely to attract. If anything drags on too long, expect frustration.

As one particular phase of your life comes to an end, you trade what’s worn-out for something a little different. Be ready to detach from whatever no longer suits you. Romantically, you’re ready for some friendly banter. Financially, you’re not. While the wolf isn’t, as yet, at the door, the bills soon will beso budget accordingly.

Understandably, Taureans feel entitled to grumble when a delayed Mercury stalls your life. This week’s message is to take a step back to acknowledge your innermost feelings. Preoccupied with many of today’s distractions, we often lose ourselves for long periods at a time. Agitation can follow. To avoid feeling pressured or stressed, you must learn to trust your innate intuition. Calmness and true selfreflection is required.

It was with immense sadness that we woke to the news of her passing on Friday morning (Australian time).
The Queen demonstrated great determination and strength through difficult times – both personally and in her capacity as Monarch.
I know all Queenslanders will join me in extending our sincerest condolences to the Royal Family at this time.
In June 1953, she was officially crowned Queen of England. During her reign, she was Australia’s head of State during the service of 16 Australian Prime Ministers and 16 Governors-General of Australia.
There are different challenges for young people today than there was in my day and so that means looking at some different solutions.
We’re supporting IFYS to get back out into the Beerwah Community.Aspartofthis they will be holding stalls and events to directly connect with young people at the Beerwah Sportsground.I’mpersonally noticing more inclusive and understanding spaces where kids can begin to form trust and confidence with one another and with adults.

A fitting tribute, as she was the patron of more than 20 Australian charities and associations. The Queen will be sadly missed by Australians and millions of people across the world.

The Queen visited Australia 16 times including opening Parliament House in 1988 and a visit to the Sunshine Coast in March 2002 as part of the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting.
This week I headed up North to Yarraba, Mount Isa, and Palm Island with my fellow Legal Affairs and Safety Committee Members to consult with regional and remote communities about Blue Cards.

Discrimination occurred during pregnancy, while women were on parental leave and when they tried to re-enter the workforce. And it affected women regardless of their length of service, seniority, employment status (casual, part time or full time) or industry.

Developed by CSIRO behavioural scientists, the mindset survey taps the outlook of people contemplating a weight control program, asking about motivation and where people are at with healthy eating, being more active and managing theirCSIROweight.Research Scientist, Dr Emily Brindal said while Australians appreciate the value of a healthy and happy lifestyle, the act of changing eating and activity habits is hard, and long-term weight management is an ongoing challenge.
• A new mum sacked several months into her 12 months unpaid parental leave.
“It is concerning that many case studies featured women who chose to ‘live with’ the detrimental treatment or resigned without making a complaint. “More information is needed both for women, so they know their rights and entitlements, and for employers, who may want to do the right thing but are confused about their obligations under the law,” she said.
Mindset doesn’t help weight loss
The study indicates that the strongest predictor of achieving clinically significant weight loss was engagement with the right digital support tools, rather than being in the right mindset when starting a diet.

Minister D’Ath said the budget included $1.1 billion for the Queensland Ambulance Service, and a focus on improving mental health and wellbeing.
The findings come from a recent analysis of 11,000 Australians that responded to a mindset survey before completing the CSIRO Total Wellbeing Diet 12-week weight loss program.
For the Sunshine Coast Health and Hospital Service, this includes additional emergency department capacity, including a new rapid access clinic to reduce hospital demand pressures, and the Nambour Hospital redevelopment, an $86.2 million project that will deliver 118 extraMinisterbeds.for Health and Ambulance Services Yvette D’Ath said the State Budget would support strong growth
A new study by CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency, has found that initial mindset was not the best predictor for weight loss success.
A pilot study by the Monash Business School analysed data from calls to the JobWatch helpline and found pregnant women faced a wide range of discrimination detrimental to their job.
• A woman with a high-risk pregnancy whose employer tried to force her to do tasks her doctor said were unsafe because the boss dismissed the advice.
PREGNANT women continue to be sacked, demoted and discriminated against in the workplace despite laws designed to protect them, Monash University research shows.
“These results show that mindset changes throughout a weight loss journey. Motivation increases with success, and this can have a positive effect on mindset, so how you feel when you begin a weight loss journey is not necessarily going to determine your overall success,” Dr Brindal said.

The mindset survey looked at motivation levels around healthy eating and being more active. The analysis found that those with the lowest levels of motivation lost the most weight.

We are all lucky to live in and be responsible for a well and truly amazing little patch of Planet Together,Earth.we’ve grown and supplied, and you all have planted many tens of thousands of native plants in gardens across SE QLD.
When we plant local native plants, we create not just beautiful gardens, but habitat for wildlife and through this we preserve and enrich our local ecosystems (and our lives too).
Time to be snake aware
In September we begin our seventh year at Forest Heart ecoNursery and we celebrate more than ever the great diversity and richness of our local native plants of SE QLD and Australian Native Plants in general.
It’s warming up and snakes are again on the move, being seen more often in and around houses and bushland.According to the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, there are over 25 species of snakes are found in the local area.

To reduce the chances of snake bite incidents:
• carry a torch outside at night;
• think twice about keeping caged birds especially chickens close to the house. These attract rodents which in turn attract snakes;

It’s also important to remember that property is a long game. The first property I bought was an inner-city terrace for $96,000. That amount of money seemed like the earth to me at that stage, but over time it always looks cheap. You’ll look back on your purchase today and think the same way.
After that, focus on the bones of the property: Ceiling height, views, the floorplan and any common areas of apartment buildings. Don’t ever buy without getting builder, pest and strata reports.

If you can afford to buy a house in a good location, do that. History shows that houses will always outpace apartments when it comes to capital gains. But if you don’t have the budget for a house – or one in a good location – then buy the best apartment you can afford.
With interest rates now rising, your mortgage repayments will be more expensive than last year. But over the life of a 25 or 30-year home loan, you’ll pay low rates for periods and high rates for periods depending on the health of the broader economy. So, it’s normal. The long-term average loan rate in Australia is above 7% and even after recent increases, we’re still well below that now at 3% to 4%.
The most important thing to do is buy in the best location you can afford. You can always change what’s on the site, but you can never change the size, location, or aspect so always prioritise these Theelements.aspect is critical. No amount of impressive decor matches the feeling you get from a property that is bathed in sunlight. The ideal situation is a north or north-east aspect to the rear of the property if it’s a house, or to the main living areas of an apartment.
With new legislation rolling out on 1st October 2022, it is imperative that our Property Managers remain up to date with legislation. This ensures we maintain and continue to provide a six-star service to all our landlords, tenants, and new clients.
About one in five are getting help from the Bank of Mum and Dad. More than 65% are using various forms of government assistance, such as a First Home Owners Grant or a stamp duty exemption.
I wish all young first home buyers out in the market this Spring the best of luck.
Tips for first home buyers this Spring
Recent data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows almost seven out of 10 first home buyers are purchasing with a partner or spouse.
Recently, our team of Property Managers from the McGrath Beerwah office attended a training seminar hosted by Real Estate ExcellenceStacey Holt.
With the traditionally busy Spring selling season commencing this month, my key piece of advice for all buyers, particularly young first home buyers, is to take advantage of today’s changing market. Don’t delay your purchase because you think the market has further to fall. We won’t know we’re past the bottom until we are, and then you’ll be competing with a surge of returning buyers.
During Spring, we typically see more properties come onto the market, so you’ll have more choice. Plus, softer prices pretty much around the country now will help many people buy this Spring.
For first home buyers, this Spring is a great time to buy. You won’t feel as much pressure in this changing market, you’ll have more properties to choose from and you’ll likely pay less than last year.

With another RBA rise to the cash rate of 0.5% in the past week, there’s no denying the recent interest rate rises will have an impact on buyers’ lending capacity. Colin Mason of Mason Finance Group says that borrowing capacity has been reduced, on average, by approximately $135,000 since interest rates began to climb six months ago. However, Mason Finance group recorded aboveaverage loan applications for August, which is reflective of the fact that comparatively speaking, interest rates are still low.
