O
ver the years of being the editor of the paper I have learnt so much about our community but there is still one issue that I am no closer to working out. That is how to allocate space for the letter’s page each week. I also wonder if the ebb and flow of letters to the editor directly relates to the overall passion, happiness or busyness of our readership. During March there were a number of weeks that we filled almost two pages each week which was great. There were plenty of interesting and thought provoking issues raised from residents from townships across the area (and no they weren’t all about climate change, although I will concede that did become a feisty topic.) So while this week our letters are a ‘little light on’ I am hoping that everyone has just been a bit busy with school holidays and relaxing over Easter. So if there is a local issue that you think needs to be addressed, open up your computer, or even grab a pen and paper and send your views through to letters@gcnews.com.au In the case of pen and paper, send it through, or with the speed that Australia Post gets letters through, you might want to ask someone a little more techy than yourself to fax it to us on 5438 7446. Local News Steve Irwin Way needs action?

According to RACQ spokesperson Michael Roth, the time for political procrastination has past. Steve Irwin Way needs to be duplicated and it needs to happen soon. “The recent tragic accident on the Bruce Highway highlights the importance of having an alternative route available,” he said. “The optimal outcome is to three-lane the Bruce Highway from where it ends just north of Caboolture through to the Sunshine Coast, but that seems like a long way off. “We think that a better short term solution would be to duplicate the Steve Irwin Way, giving an alternative route for peak times – such as holiday periods and when accidents occur – around the inadequate section of the Bruce Highway. RACQ has consistently called for the duplication of the Steve Irwin Way for a considerable time. “The road already has an average usage of over 10,000 cars per day, which is the trigger for duplication,” Mr Roth said. “Before the last state election, we released our ‘Motoring Matters’ document, which – amongst other things – emphasised the imperative to duplicate the Steve Irwin Way. “Successive governments and local members have failed to deliver for the local communities

living along the Steve Irwin Way and the motoring public between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast. “RACQ will again be advocating on behalf of all local road users, taking a submission to the state budget process for the Steve Irwin Way duplication to be made an urgent priority,” he said.
What do you think? Dual laning Steve Irwin way to help the Bruce Highway? Should the Bruce Highway be triple laned instead? Would you be OK with extra highway traffic using Steve Irwin Way? Let us know by emailing editorial@gcnews. com.au or posting us at PO Box 99, Beerwah, QLD, 4519.

This market is part of the national 2016 Boots for Change Support Farming Families awareness campaign, organised by the Australian Farmers’ Markets Association (AFMA) during April. On Saturday, the local produce market at Witta will be joined by the Ananda Marga River School of Maleny who will be there (with boots on) showing support for farming families and local food by having a stall selling food the children and parents have made from local ingredients. Throughout the morning, there will be Boot Throwing Competitions for the children and the grown-ups between 8.00am – 8.30am; 9.00am – 9.30am and 10.00am – 10.30am with vouchers provided by Blundstone and the market organisers for prizes. The campaign idea originated from the 2015 ABC Heywire Youth Innovation Summit, championed by an HSC student, Emma Mott from Bega, in south coast NSW. Emma said the beauty of Australian produce is that it’s grown by our mums and dads, who care for our livestock and environment. “We see the struggle and hardship that farming families go through to produce food for Australia’s dinner tables. We think more people need to appreciate this," she said. “We want people to put boots on and head down to their local farmers’ market to show local

producers that we care and want them to keep producing healthy farm fresh Australian food. It’s something everyone can do,” Emma said. Market shoppers are asked to shop in boots; stallholders will be wearing boots too so you can expect plenty of boot company. The idea of supporting our farmers by pulling on a pair of boots – and stepping into their shoes – or boots – is an act that will surely resonate with everyone interested in local, seasonal, paddockto-plate food. Pat Fuller, Manager of the Market, said they're asking shoppers – and stallholders – to put their best boots forward. "It is amazing how this idea resonates; people are very passionate about supporting farming families and promoting agriculture to boost the local economy," said Pat.

New shed a step closer
Status of old timber mill
Back in 2006 the Maleny Men's Shed was established on the grounds of the Maleny Historical Society, and an agreement was formed that would allow the blokes a long-term plan for them to share one of the sheds already on the site.
Since printing the letter to the editor from Beerwah local Peter Voigt ‘A man’s hope is his castle’ (GC&M News in the March 16 edition), we have done a little digging. Peter explained that for more than 20 years the property at the start of Back Creek Road, Glass House Mountains has been home to children's cubby houses, with little to no timber processing occurring during that time. “Our neighbourhood was recently informed by the incoming business that 'timber processing' would be continuing on site, with the most advanced processing machines in the world being installed,” he said. GC&M News have followed up with Sunshine Coast Council to see what the status of the project is and a spokesperson from council has advised that the property has historical approvals for a timber processing plant. "At the end of February, a meeting was held on site with the business owner and around 25 interested community members," said the spokesperson. "Council is currently investigating whether the site benefits from prevailing use rights or if the existing land use rights have been abandoned. "A planning scheme cannot generally prevent the continuation of a lawful existing use. Queensland planning law protects lawfully established land uses until such time as they can be considered ‘abandoned’ or subject to a material increase in scale or intensity." The test for abandonment is high and requires council to prove that abandonment has occurred. "The simple cessation of the use, and even the associated removal of machinery from the site, does not necessarily mean a use has been abandoned.
And while over the years the fellas have made the shared approach work - these days with around 40 members who regularly attend each Tuesday morning - the need for their own space has become an absolute priority. So not surprisingly there was plenty of excitement when the Rotary Club of Maleny decided to donate $10,500 to significantly contribute to the cost of the massive slab. The slab has been completed and now the hard work of grant writing and funds generation is underway to complete the project. The Men's Shed is a place where men can get together, join in activities and talk about what's on their mind. It is a fully equipped workshop where skilled and unskilled men can share time with each other, swap yarns and work together on practical projects predominately for the Historical Society. So don’t forget if you see the fellas out doing their sausage sizzle each fortnight at Woolies, pick up a sausage and help make the completed shed a reality. Rotary’s immediate Past President Ric Townsend said that Rotary had been keen to be able to provide the funds to local community groups (in this case the Maleny Men's Shed) because of the vital role the group plays in supporting the health and well-being of local men. President of the Men’s Shed Wayne Shultz said they really appreciate the generous support that Rotary have provided. "We are very fortunate and I would also like to thank Angels Electrical for their on-going support and to Patron of the Historical Society Flo Wood for her regular donations to our group," he said. Immediate Past Rotary President Ric Townsend and Rotarian John McLennan, Wayne Schultz, President of the Men’s Shed and former President Malcolm Baker
"It would need to be shown that the cessation amounted to a permanent abandonment, rather than being intended to be re-started by the land owner." Council will receive submissions and information relating to the proposed development by 4.30pm on Friday 22 April 2016

Show volunteer profiles - Denise Owen or fault the jumps in the ring. From 7.00am until 7.00pm on the Friday of every show and again the following day from 7.00am until the last jumping event finishes late on Saturday afternoon, Denise sits and scores the horses. She never leaves the ring to look around at other events - instead when she is at the show she completely dedicates all her time to her volunteer position. “Her dedication is just unbelievable. I really don’t know what drives her as year after year she sits and scores these events - even in the rain, westerly winds or fog! Denise has scored in the ring for as long as Hendy has been announcing at the Maleny Show and it’s just incredible,” explained Kayrene. Denise has become an integral part in the smooth running of the show jumping ring. A great offsider to the judge and course fielder, Denise is strict with the competitors about making sure all their paperwork is completed on time and is always spot on with her scoring. “Denise is a great help in the show jumping ring. Her scores are always correct and she is really good at dealing with the other volunteers as she has a great sense of humour. “She is an asset to the Maleny Show Society and we hope she continues to volunteer for many years to come,” said Kayrene.

The Maleny Show Society relies on lots of dedicated volunteers to help them bring the show together each year. There are so many ways that people can help out, and Denise Owen is just one of the fabulous volunteers who put in a great effort. Come rain, hail or shine, for over 25 years Denise Owen has volunteered her time at the Maleny Show. Every year without fail Denise travels to the show to work with the horse events as a scorer in the show jumping ring. Originally living in Beerwah when she first volunteered, Denise moved to Blackbutt around seven years ago, and yet still continues her annual support of the Show. Denise first got involved through meeting Kayrene Corkin at Beerwah Preschool. Kayrene is a long time Maleny Show Society member and also Chief Ring Steward for the horse events. She worked at Beerwah preschool at the time when Denise’s children attended. Denise had an interest in horses, and so with Kayrene’s encouragement, she started volunteering. Denise is what is termed ‘a penciller’; and her role is to score the horses when they either clear

Mary Cairncross upgrade underway From this week, visitors to Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve can expect to see some construction activity at the reserve as the contractor begins work on the building renewal project. By the middle of next year, visitors will be able to enjoy an educational experience at the new Discovery Centre, with an elevated viewing platform and boardwalk, and meeting theatrette. The upgrade also features a conservation research area and offices and amenities for the hard-working volunteers and staff who run the information desk. Cr McKay said the footprint of the new building will remain within already disturbed areas at the reserve. “Fences will be erected and early demolition works will begin this week with a few minor changes onsite for visitors to be aware of,” she said. There will be some minor changes to parking and vehicle traffic throughout the construction period, which will be clearly signed. The Forest Walk will remain open, however visitors are asked to please pay attention to onsite signage as the access point to the forest walk will be changed to provide a safe environment for visitors.
Volunteers in the old education centre The volunteers and temporary visitor centre will be open as normal, from Thursday this week, once they have moved from the current education centre to the temporary facility. A temporary café will also be set up, but this may take a few weeks due to tendering and technical logistics. Visitors will still be able to enjoy the remainder of the park and the barbecue and picnic area during construction.

Festival Director Debs Swain said, when she started this project, she couldn't foretell the impact knitting a few squares and triangles would have on the women in our community. The yarn bombing team meet at Maleny Library each Thursday morning between 10.45am – 12.45pm to work on projects for the event. The Blackall Range Care Group and other local retirement homes have also joined in the fun.
eastonlawyers Each week, Knitfest shares wool that has been donated, to caregivers who drop off the yarn to elderly ladies who cannot leave their homes, so that they may make knitted pieces at home, which are then returned completed the following week. Knitfest certainly has a feel good factor, uniting a community of knitters of all ages and skill levels. For the non-knitters there are also pom-pom making sessions at the Maleny Library between 3.00pm – 4.00pm each Tuesday in April and May. Free patterns and information on how to get involved are available on their website www.knitfest.com.au.

Local economic benefits of cruise ships
Andrew Prescott
President: Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce
I was talking with several Chamber members over the last few weeks discussing opportunities and threats to our businesses. With the continued sprawl of development getting closer and closer to our region the conversation was very relevant. Now is a great time to take a breath and look at how this may affect your business. For some of us it will provide a new market in which to promote ourselves, but for others, it may present some challenges. So take some time to think about your current situation, where you want your business to go, and set some goals. Speak with the professionals you use at the moment such as your accountant, bank, or solicitor, experts in your industry space, and any business mentors you may have, and do a business plan. Work out what it is that sets your business apart from other businesses in your industry and focus on that point of difference. Consider how you may market and promote your business and analyse any challenges or threats that you can think of. Perhaps now is a good time to diversify your business into complimentary areas? Or if your business is already doing that it may be time to specialise in those areas of your business that are most profitable. One way of promoting your business is to get involved with local community groups and/or service clubs. Networking groups are another great way of meeting like-minded business people and provide an opportunity to source other professional services while promoting your own. Hope to see you at our next Chamber meeting on Friday, April 15 at Pasta d’Vine in Simpson Street Beerwah at 6.00pm for a 6.30pm start and begin your networking there!
With cruise ships now regularly arriving in Mooloolaba, Mayor Jamieson says that it has created a fantastic opportunity for people who’ve perhaps never been to the Sunshine Coast to sample all the great things in their day-long stay on shore and perhaps become long-term tourists here. With this in mind councilor Jenny McKay is keen that the Hinterland gets involved and gives these tourists the opportunity to experience what the Hinterland has to offer. “Not everyone will want to spend the day on the coast, some people will be looking for other experiences,” she said. The Maleny Chamber along with Sunshine Coast Council and Visit Sunshine Coast have organised an information evening / networking event to explain how local business may be able to benefit from the opportunity. Julie Cullen from Visit Sunshine Coast has organised Julie O’Brien who is the organiser of the Cruise Forum to specifically talk to Hinterland businesses about the cruise market and how to prepare for a cruise forum. The details of this evening are as follows: Tuesday, April 19 from 5.00pm to 7.00pm at Spicers Tamarind at Maleny, cost to attend is $20.00 and includes gourmet canapes and a complimentary drink. Bookings are essential by emailing secretary@malenycommerce.org.au by Friday, April 15.

Voting now open for ‘The Glassy’s’
And the winner is…! After an incredibly successful nomination period for the inaugural Glass House Small Business Awards (aka the Glassy’s) hosted by local MP Andrew Powell, it’s now your turn to vote in the Employee of the Year and/or Business of the Year categories. “Glass House doesn't have large shopping centres or central business districts, it’s our small ‘Mum-and-Dad’ business operators that are the lifeblood of our community. “So these awards have been deliberately designed to promote and recognise the efforts of our many small businesses and show our appreciation for their contribution to the wider community. “The business and employee in each region with the most votes will pick up a Bronze Glassy,” said Mr Powell. The Silver Glassy will be presented by the Chamber of Commerce Presidents true recognition by your peers - to a business and employee in each region that is delivering above and beyond. The coveted Gold Glassy will go to one business and one employee from across the Glass House electorate - selected from the nominated Bronze and Silver category winners. “I know that each of you would have at least one experience where you have shopped locally and received excellent customer service so why not seize the opportunity to publicly thank and recognise this small business or staff member and submit your vote,” Mr Powell said. Voting will be online only at www.andrewpowell.com.au and closes Friday, May 6. The businesses from Glasshouse Country include, The Beerwah Hideway, Beerwah Hair and Beauty, Neddy's Nosebag, V8 Supercuts, Victory Tea House and Antiques, Crookneck Resort, Glasshouse Country Meats, Total Microsystems, Pasta d'Vine, Matilda Fruit Barn, Landsborough IGA, KLM Energy Services, Hive Haven and Kev's Joinery and Shopfitters. In Maleny the nominees were Easton Lawyers, Rosetta Books, Maleny Credit Union, Concept IT, Mary Cairncross Café, TLC Veterinary Rehabilitation, Maleny Optical, Maleny Cheese, Woodsfarm Dairy, Maleny Town and Country and The Garden.
Hinterland Sport
Listening to feedback from their clients, Hinterland Sports has recently expanded their range to include fishing and camping gear. Now stocking yabby pots, nets, rods, reels, hooks, lures, kids starter fishing packs and lines, they are able to order in anything from the Jarvis Walker and Tsunami range, with a quick delivery turnaround. For the camping enthusiasts they are stocking the Oztrail range - tents, lanterns, showers, headlamps, torches, mattress pumps, with delivery very soon of fold up chairs, esky’s, coolers and airbeds. With no need to go to the coast to stock up – shop local and call in to see what’s on offer. They have catalogues to browse in-store, so drop in, have a chat and pick up your latest outdoor toy. With easy parking, friendly and helpful advice, Taylen and the team now cover all of your sporting, camping and fishing needs.
Still Brewin
It was smiles all around for the lucky winners of Still Brewin’s first birthday raffle. To celebrate their first year in business, owners John and Cheryl wanted to give their customers the chance to win one of three fantastic prizes. With every purchase over $25.00 customers had the choice of going into the beer or the spirits raffle – which were valued at $250.00 each. Drawn on Friday, April 1, long-time customer Brian won the generous spirits selection, and another regular had the winning ticket for the beer bundle – local Donna. Linda was on hand to collect husband Steve’s prize of $100.00 in-store credit. Brian, Donna and Linda all agreed it was the excellent customer service and advice that keeps them coming back to a wonderful local business – well done John, Cheryl and family, and keep up the great work!

Small business is booming!
Community News
For the love of knitting
Business feature Local Landsborough company Transportable Shade Sheds has teamed with Saver6.com again to help launch a small business in Gympie. Saver6.com is over the moon in welcoming Mr Josh Tappert to their network. Global Business Manager from Transportable Shade Sheds, Tyler Maclaren is excited to be able to provide the highest standard product on the market to Josh. “With the extensive background knowledge that Josh has acquired over his years of building, he eagerly snapped up the training and support. It’s so good to see that Saver6.com is helping people make their lives better.” Covering from Noosa to Maryborough means that Josh can develop the business at his own pace, with a full background support, and realise his dream to work in the local area again. Working on projects all over Australia for the last eight years as a fly-in-fly-out rigger and supervisor has meant some massive family compromises. When he found what was on offer through Saver6.com, he jumped on the opportunity with Transportable Shade Sheds so he can come back home and be involved in family life. His business, Superior Shades and Sheds is offering the supply and installation of the Transportable Shade Sheds rage of products, and he received full training and support for the full product range on offer through Saver6.com. “Having worked on a wide range of structures and buildings throughout my career, I truly love what we can offer as a small business so the Saver6.com and Transportable Shade Sheds joint venture is a match made in heaven for me,” said Josh. “It’s important that the kits and range are a great design, strong but lightweight. From my experience I understand what an innovative product the original, no rust, no bend shade shed is. “And don’t forget they are all transportable, so that gives you many options in the future. We can even custom build to suit stables, offices and even aircraft storage!” Knowing the business is 100% Australian made, manufactured, owned and operated was also important to Josh, and so was the ability to work around other commitments while still making the business grow. “We have such great support from Saver6.com, we can contact them anytime and they give us the assistance we need. They can assist with social media, business planning and future goals; for example we receive a weekly spreadsheet with not only a to-do list, but it is also broken down into how we can achieve our own targets.” So if you are in the Gympie area and need a structure to cover or shade your cars, boats, chemicals, caravans, machinery, floats or livestock, please give Josh a call on 04999 SHEDS (0499 974 337), or email admin@superiorshadesandsheds.com.au for a free quote. Alternatively, if you’re interested in the Saver6.com network and what business opportunities are on offer call them on 5405 3620.

By Sonia Clark Jennifer Emerson has always loved knitting and has been an avid knitter for over 60 years. A number of years ago when her son Richard got married; Jennifer, being a good mum, made sure that he had a good selection of jumpers. His new mother-in-law, who was also a social worker at a community advice bureau, saw the work that Jennifer had done, and asked if she would be interested Beerwah local Je nnifer in knitting squares to make rugs for Emerson and som e of her disadvantaged and homeless people. work Well that was over 20 years ago and Jennifer hasn’t really stopped knitting to help others since! Jennifer has lived at Glasshouse Views in Beerwah for the last four years, and is part of the local knitting and craft club that meets there once a week. Village manager Christine Minetti said Jennifer is such a generous woman who is completely selfless and a really active contributor to the community. “She has so much to offer to both our village as well as the wider community,” she said. Jennifer knits everyday and especially likes to get crafty while she watches AFL on the weekends when she regularly knits 10-12 squares. Over the years, Jennifer has knitted literally thousands of squares that are made into blankets for the homeless as well as jumpers, mittens and scarves. She has also gotten a few other local ladies interested in knitting squares and has friends that knit clothes for babies. Another friend at the local Op shop brings unsold woollen items to Jennifer who unpicks them and recycles the old garments into something useful for others. “I just love it. It makes you feel good that you are doing something – particularly when you get older. You don’t want to just sit around and it’s definitely worthwhile to help others,” explained Jennifer.

We had a turnout of 20 ladies which included Linda and Glenda, two new potential members, who had read about the event in the Glass House Country & Maleny News. The trivia quizzes were won by Maree and Le-Anne and the raffle prizes went to Yvonne and Gwen. Many thanks go to Pat for hosting an extremely successful morning. Our next function on Wednesday, April 20 will be our monthly lunch meeting where the speaker will be Angie Andrew who will talk to us about 'Cooking for Cures'. Arrive at 11.00am for an 11.30am start at the Glass House Sports Club on Steve Irwin Way. The Glass House Country View Club meets on the first and third Wednesday of each month.
The first Wednesday we have outings to places of interest around the Sunshine Coast and the third Wednesday is our lunch meeting where we have interesting speakers, trading tables, raffles, etc. We are a very sociable group of ladies; we have great fun, interesting topics, speakers and outings and we enjoy knowing that the money we raise goes to a very worthy cause. Sports and Recreation Award Time Every year the Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club members celebrate the achievements of their members by nominating in the MDSRC Awards. There are five great awards on offer and guest speaker, Tim Dwyer, is known as a long standing Sunshine Coast councillor – but you may not know he is a former professional rugby league player who played for Manly Warringah, Eastern Suburbs and Fulham UK. With the Club of the Year Award always hotly contested, Maleny Arts and Crafts, Maleny RSL, Maleny Community Gym, Maleny Rotary, Maleny Golf Club and Maleny Swimming Club are all vying for this honour in 2016. Two of the districts outstanding young sportspeople are contesting the Sportsperson of the Year Award; Sarah Peters has been nominated by the Maleny Show Society, and Cameron Taylor by Maleny San Taekwondo for their achievements throughout 2015. Both are champions in their fields. We wish them every success at the Awards Dinner at Tranquil Park Resort on Saturday, April 23. Tickets are available by emailing gail@mavmuse.com

Contributed by Patricia Bradford President Coral Beutel hosted the March meeting in her garden at Peachester. Our guest speaker was Steve Arndell from Superway Garden Products which is a small family business based in Beerwah whose products are sold Australia wide. The insecticides, fungicides, fertilisers and weedkillers are manufactured on site under very strict conditions set by the PVA. Termite eradication was of great interest as most of us have to deal with them from time to time. He explained about what signs to look for termite activity and ways of eradicating termites. Members had many questions and ants and termites seemed to be the most troublesome. Coral thanked Steve for his informative talk and a donation of a compact termite baiting station. Results of the competition bench for March were: 1st Cath Howitt -15 points, tie 2nd Margaret Ferris and Coral Beutel. Come and join us for our next meeting on Thursday, April 21, 9.30am at the Peachester Hall. All welcome. For more information phone 5496 9169.

The Expo’s all about promoting sustainable timber use - especially of native timbers - through showcasing the work of local and regional wood artisans. In line with this ethic, all wood artisans and exhibitors work in sustainably harvested native timbers, weed or recycled timbers. The Maleny Wood Expo is now recognised as one of the best wood shows in Australia – not only for its telling of the whole wood story, but for the friendly country atmosphere created largely by the dedicated volunteers who work tirelessly for the event. With an amazing range of lovingly crafted timber products to see, Expo visitors can meet and talk to the craftsmen and women who’ve created them. There’s work by furniture-makers and toy-makers, musical instrument-makers and box-makers, whittlers, carvers and everything in-between. There really is something to suit every taste and budget. Visitors can glimpse the beauty of the region’s early timber and catch up with the very best in both hand-crafted traditional and high tech tools. With the distinctive aroma of newly milled timber enveloping Maleny Showgrounds, there are live demos of chainsaws, woodworking, trade tools and more. There's hands-on woodwork for the whole family with WoodShed Workshops, Woodwork for Women, and a creative space for kids to taste the delights of getting their hands in the sawdust and taking home their own masterpiece. There are native plants and local Maleny produce to purchase, natural resource management displays and much much more. Pull up a hay bale, enjoy great food and fabulous local music, and have a great day! If you’d like to be part of the Expo’s great volunteer team, contact Kellie on 5494 3151 during office hours or email info@barunglandcare.org.au. Any surplus raised through the Maleny Wood Expo supports Barung’s work in community landcare education and environmental projects on the Blackall Range. The Expo is held at the beautiful Maleny Showgrounds and runs from Saturday, April 30 until Monday, May 2.
Barung Landcare is a leading community-based organisation working to develop ethical solutions for a sustainable future. We support local and regional community empowerment to conserve and enhance the rich diversity of natural resources of the Blackall Range and environs. You Said It Right to reply
We read Mr Dorman’s article in your paper and as the owners we would like the right to reply in this matter. We have been associated with the property since the early 1950’s, with the property where the proposed Optus Tower is to be built, being a pineapple farm in its time. We have been retired now for a number of years and find we could not make a viable living on it as it is under the Councils 40Ha minimum requirement for rural sustainability. We too would like to be able to sub-divide the farm and make for a more comfortable retirement. Mr Dorman has stated in his article that under the Sunshine Coast Town Plan the area is for rural pursuits. A green belt to separate the towns of Beerwah and Landsborough has evidently been a part of the council’s planning for many years. Council did not want to have a continuous line of dwellings between the two communities, even rural residential on larger blocks. Woodlands have an extensive chicken farming operation less than 300m of the proposed Optus facility adjoining the concerned farmer’s own properties. While this business remains in the area, the likelihood of residential or other types of development, is very limited. The vegetation on Mr Dorman’s land is low lying and subject to flooding and is not suitable for agricultural use. So we have a situation that the location meets the guidelines for development and if it is rejected will have to be built elsewhere. No doubt it will then become a problem for other

concerned farmers and citizens in another area. In driving around the Sunshine Coast please take note of these communication poles and the areas they are located in – both industrial, rural and residential areas. Misuse of engines
If the recent ongoing unseasonal heat is yet another sign of global warming, then many of us are truly alarmed and adversely affected by it. One form of preventable pollution that seems to be on the increase is the number of stationary vehicles that leave their engines running, often for considerable amounts of time. In fact some people spend their entire lunchbreak sitting in their cars with the engines going with no regard of what this does to the overall atmosphere nor to the air we all have to breathe. Now if you have a medical condition that requires you to have constant air conditioning, then that's just how it is, but most of these stationary cars are not in that category. So I am appealing to everyone to be more mindful of facts and other people's wellbeingespecially those suffering from asthma and find better ways to remain cool without spoiling the air for everyone else and worsening conditions for our planet. I also reckon that the police ought to crack down on more motorists who are leaving their stationary
cars' engine's running for lengthy periods of time. Isn't there actually a paragraph under QLD's Traffic Act that regulates this misuse of engines? Gaby Luft Maleny
Book and Garage Sale a big success
Glasshouse Country Men’s Shed Inc. would like to say a big thank you to the local community. Your support resulted in a very successful Book and Garage Sale. Hundreds of books were sold to avid readers who scooped up bags of popular titles at bargain prices. Buyers also grabbed other popular items such as motor mowers, garden tools and furniture. There was a great friendly atmosphere on the day with the smell of sausages and onions on the barbie whetting appetites. The success of events such as this just highlights how lucky we are to live in such a big hearted generous and supportive community.

All of Beerwah State School were tense with anticipation in parade, to hear the results of the winning class, whose prize was to 'make wacky' the principal’s hair. Students worked hard all of term one, collecting 'Kandoos' small reward tokens given in return for good behaviour and active learning. The school embraces the School Wide Positive Behaviour Support Program and their mascot Kandoo the ‘Can Do Kangaroo’ helps everyone to remember to be a safe, respectful and an active learner. Each week, all classes focus on a particular element of positive behaviour which also assists the students to have strong community values. The winning class, 2B3, under the direction of class teacher Mrs Seale, were thrilled to have the highest tally of Kandoos and as a result have fun with the principal Ms Austen's hair.

School News Time flies when you’re having fun! Contributed by Katrina DeClara Time definitely has flown during term one at Beerburrum State School, with students electing school and sporting house captains, who recently took part in the Halogen Young Leaders Day in Brisbane. Earlier in the term, as part of the PE program, the Year 3’s to 6 took part in all-important swimming lessons. During March, students from Year 5 and 6 had the opportunity to play Interschool Softball, with those who participated all agreeing that this was a great ‘team sport’ learning experience. Students also kept themselves busy with Clean Up Australia Day at school, ensuring our school is super clean! We also held our Inter House Cross
Country with students displaying determination and persistence to complete the run. Everyone dug out their best orange outfit in support of the ‘Bullying, NO WAY!’ day, with lots of conversations around this topic across all grades in the school. Our annual ‘Book Fair’ raised over $300.00 for the library to purchase new books for our students to enjoy. We also continued with our Kitchen and Garden program with lots of tasty foods being made and experienced by students. To finish off the term, Preps, 1 and 2 classes held an Easter Bonnet Parade with lots of creative hats, ears and bonnets bouncing their way around the school! Term 2 is shaping up to be just as action packed.

Top Brisbane master craftsmen exhibiting at Expo Two of south-east Queensland’s most highly regarded woodworkers are coming to exhibit at the 20th Maleny Wood Expo from April 30 to May 2. Pieces made by Robert Howard from South Brisbane, have found their way to homes around Australia and into highly-regarded collections in Detroit, Boston and Cincinnati. His beautiful chairs have won numerous awards in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland, and he has a special interest in carving nonfunctional bowls. "I have been a professional woodworker since the early 1980s, long enough to have very particular ideas about what I like to do and how I like to do it,” says Robert.
Handcrafted by Peter Young
“Woodworking is one of those broad occupations that has a branch suited to just about any personality.” Peter Young worked for many years as a research scientist but has now returned to his first passion: making quality furniture using traditional methods. He has trained in Australia, Canada and the USA to develop a wide range of technical skills, which he brings to each handcrafted piece. Peter’s philosophy is in keeping with an emerging trend to have fewer but better quality pieces of furniture in our homes, made by local craftsmen using renewable local resources. Through his company, Divergent Designs, he creates furniture that he expects will still be in use and valued in 200 years’ time. For bookings or for more information visit www.malenywoodexpo.com. • The Maleny Wood Expo is a highlight of the national woodworking calendar, recognised by woodworking magazines and universally loved by the ‘woodies’ who flock to the Sunshine Coast each year. • Designed to promote sustainable use of our beautiful native timbers through the work of local and regional wood artisans, the Expo is now acknowledged as one of the best wood shows in Australia. • All wood artisans and exhibitors are required to work in sustainably harvested native timbers, weed or recycled timbers. •Visitors will enjoy over 90 exhibitors, entertainment, great food, demonstrations,
Kids space program workshops, and view the entries and winners for the prestigious Wootha Prize, with total prize money of $4,750.00 •The 2016 event will be a joyful celebration of Barung Landcare’s 20 years of promoting sustainable timber use. •The 2016 Maleny Wood Expo will be held over three days at the Maleny Showgrounds. The Maleny Wood Expo is proudly supported by the Queensland Government through Tourism and Events Queensland, as well as the Sunshine Coast Council and Visit Sunshine Coast.

Cancer can be demanding - both on your body and your mind. Katie Clift, Executive Manager for Cancer Council Queensland, said research shows that up to one third of cancer patients experience ongoing psychological challenges such as anxiety and depression, as a result of their illness. “Emotional stress after cancer can be just as challenging during diagnosis or treatment, which is why Cancer Council Queensland is inviting people who have been affected by cancer to take part in our half day Mindfulness Workshop,” she said. The workshop is a four hour meditation program being held at Maleny, on June 27 which is based on a combination of mindfulness meditation and cognitive therapy, and is run by Cancer Council Queensland’s Cancer Counselling Service. The aim is to introduce participants to meditation skills and tools to help them live more fully in the moment, rather than being caught up in worries. Locals who have been affected by cancer, their family and friends, can register now by calling Cancer Council’s 13 11 20 or emailing livingmindfully@cancerqld.org.au. More information about Cancer Council Queensland, including counselling and support programs, is available via cancerqld.org.au or Cancer Council’s 13 11 20.
Hidden dangers of toxins Sunshine Coast Libraries will be hosting information sessions across the Coast on ‘Toxins in products discover hidden dangers’ during June including a session at the Maleny Library. The sessions will be presented by Beerburrum’s Danielle Carrinton from Young Living Essential Oils. During the session she will be giving participants a closer look at the ingredient lists in the personal care products you use on a daily basis. Discover the 12 main toxic ingredients used in common products such as toothpaste, skincare, cosmetics, shampoo and shower gel. Find out what effect these chemicals can have and learn how to make your own chemical free hand-scrub. As Danielle was also keen to give Glasshouse Country locals the opportunity to learn more she will be running sessions at the Beerburrum Hall, on Friday, April 22 and Saturday, April 23. If you would like to find out more give Danielle a call on 0408 300 476. Or if you would like to attend the session at the Maleny Library on June 16 from 10.00am – 11.30am you can book directly with the Library by phoning 5475 8989.

Living - History Hospital visits explained
The old bill spikes in the Bankfoot House collection contain many interesting historical documents. A recent discovery is a receipt from the ‘Hospital for Sick Children’ in Brisbane. Dated 23 June 1913, the receipt acknowledges payment from Mrs Clementina Burgess of seven shillings and sixpence, being ‘fee for maintenance and medical care of Willie Burgess for one week’. What is the story behind this intriguing piece of paper? Ethel Burgess, daughter of Willie, said, ‘One day in 1913 dad was going to school in the sulky with his sisters, Ellie and Mary,’ Her father William Isaac Burgess was aged six, and his older sisters were Janet Elsie (always called Ellie) and Mary. They were on their way from Bankfoot House to Glass House Mountains State School, which had been opened in 1906. “Auntie Ellie (aged nine) and Auntie Mary (aged 10) were driving. The horse shied, and dad was thrown out onto his head,” Ethel said. “He received a head injury and went to hospital. He stuttered from then on, although as he grew older the stutter disappeared.” Ethel said it was her Grandma (Clementina Burgess nee Grigor) who told her the story. “The girls didn’t ever want to talk about it because they were responsible and felt guilty,” she said.
The Burgess family c1913
General store at hall
“Dad didn’t talk about it. Blokes don’t tend to talk about their injuries.” A further receipt in the collection is also from the Hospital for Sick Children and is dated 4 April 1913. ‘Received from Mrs Burgess, Glass Mountain North Coast Line the sum of two shillings.’ Who was sick and what was wrong with him or her? Ethel said Ellie may have been the one in hospital. “She had diphtheria when she was in primary school,” she said. “The receipt is for only two shillings, so it was probably for a short stay. I remember dad saying that grandfather wanted a family photo taken at that time‘while we’re all still alive’, so maybe that was when Ellie had been sick.”
Did you know that when the Glass House Mountains School of Arts (now the Glass House Community Hall) was built in 1916, an area at the front of the building was designed and appointed as a shop? It was the first shop in Glass House Mountains. Mr Crouch, who owned the general store in Beerwah, leased the shop originally and in 1921 Mr E Greaves managed the shop for Mr Crouch. Eventually the lease was transferred to Mr Greaves. A building which had previously operated as the local State store was relocated from the eastern side of the railway line to the corner opposite the current Mitre 10 and Mr Greaves eventually secured these premises and vacated the shop in the School of Arts. In about 1926 the shop at the front of the Hall was dismantled and the shop space incorporated into the general Hall area. In 1936 Mr Greaves erected a new store on the Bruce Highway (now Bruce Parade) – the site of the present shopping complex on the corner of Bruce Parade and Reed Street. The photo would have been taken some time between 1916 and 1926. It is presumed that Mr and Mrs Greaves are standing in front of the building, but who is the person on the cart? The Hall Committee are keen to gather any photos or information regarding the Hall and would appreciate it if you could contact either John Winterhoff on 5496 9349 or Elaine Reeves on 5496 9134 if you are happy to share these for copying. Don’t forget the Back to Glass House Day to be held on Saturday, September 10.

Role and purpose of Bora Rings Have you ever driven along Johnston Road from the Bruce Highway at Glass House Mountains and seen the signage for a Bora Ring and wondered what a Bora Ring is and what its traditional purpose might be? If you would like to know more you should consider heading along to hear Michael Strong, the Abbey Museum’s Senior Curator, giving a talk titled ‘One Ring to Rule Them All – Towards Understanding the Plethora of Bora Grounds in South East Queensland’. Bora grounds are among the most significant and sacred features in the Aboriginal cultural landscape yet we still are confused by their role and purpose. Michael will be talking about some of the new research that has emerged from the hundreds of cultural heritage projects he has been involved in with Aboriginal communities, together with ethno-historical research and new oral information provided by historians and land owners. The talk will take place on Saturday, April 16 from 2.00pm – 3.30pm. Cost is $10.00 (includes a light afternoon tea). If you would like to attend please contact the Abbey Museum on 5495 1652 or book online at www.abbeymuseum.com.au/events for a 10% discount! Elected
Representatives Mal Brough
Federal Member for Fisher
Glasshouse Country RSL Sub Branch
It appears that the State Government having declined the opportunity to take responsibility for their own revenue raising, as offered by the Federal Government at the recent COAG meeting, and is now desperate to raise funds through any means possible. The Glasshouse Country RSL Sub Branch has a memorial on a small piece of land at Landsborough owned by Queensland Rail. They have had the use of this land for many years free of charge. This week the Sub Branch received a notice from Queensland Rail offering to renew their agreement on payment of a Base Licence Fee of $1,000 per annum to be increased by 5% or the CPI whichever is greater for the following four years. Further they are required to pay Queensland Rail’s fees in setting up the agreement to an amount of $2,000. The Sub Branch were given no prior advice that a licence fee was to be levied and have been given only 14 days to respond to secure the agreement. The ‘permitted’ use for the payment of the annual licence fee is ‘maintenance of garden beds, paving and war memorial’. This is an outrageous demand from the State Government on any organisation let alone a service organisation such as the RSL and I urge you to contact the State Minister for Transport and the Commonwealth Games (transport@ ministerial.qld.gov.au) in support of the Glasshouse Country RSL.

Maleny-Kenilworth Road still on the to-do-list
Many of you know I have been lobbying for funds to upgrade Maleny-Kenilworth Road during my seven years as the local MP. Unfortunately any funding we could have received in recent years was re-directed into the urgent landslip repairs caused by flooding events. We did have a huge win in upgrading Grigor Bridge in Conondale and I again thank the community for their support during that campaign. In light of heavy rainfall during March in the Conondale area, I also had reason to lobby TMR to have them urgently address large pot holes and other associated road damage in time for the extra traffic expected over Easter. I’m pleased to say they listened to the community outcry and are continuing their work to repair the road to a safer standard. My commitment to secure funds for the overall repair of this road has in no way diminished and I am again gearing up to make my annual trip along Maleny-Kenilworth Road to remind the Department of Transport and Main Roads that I will not give up. I am pleased to announce that the walk this year will be held on Friday, May 20 and will again also be a way of highlighting the great contribution of the Chaplains at Maleny and Conondale State Schools. Donations of any amount will be gratefully received so please contact my office if you think you can help out! I am also always happy to welcome new walkers with me for the 38 kilometre journey so now is the time to start training! If you would like to join me, please call or email the office so we can keep you informed on the timeline.
Glass House Volunteer Awards
For the past six years, to recognise the efforts of Glass House volunteers, I have held an awards ceremony and morning tea during National Volunteer Week. The ceremony has been focused on publicly acknowledging the efforts of the many hardworking volunteers that are an integral part of our community organisations. This year I am aware that Mal Brough, Federal Member for Fisher is hosting his own volunteer awards event to highlight how valuable volunteers are to the wider community. With this in mind, I have decided not to host the Glass House awards this year and will rather be encouraging Glass House volunteers to nominate for Mr Brough’s event. Even though I will not be hosting a formal service, I would like to continue to thank and honour our volunteers by having a morning tea in my office during National Volunteer Week (May 9 to 15). If you would like to attend, can you please email my office – glass.house@ parliament.qld.gov.au

Thank you
I wish to start this first column off as your 2016 - 2020 Sunshine Coast Council Division 5 representative by sincerely thanking you, the local community. I thank you for putting your confidence in re-electing me to be responsible for undertaking such important work in the community for another four years. Indeed, I join a strong team with all sitting councillors bar one (who resigned) being re-elected. But, I can assure you I will not take anything for granted. I listened carefully to all of the feedback that I received throughout the election campaign, good, bad and in-between. I am very proud of my achievements to date for our community, but I am cognisant there is still a lot of work to be done. While there are a number of ‘big picture’ regionmaking projects in the pipeline which will positively benefit us all, including the solar farm, Maroochydore City Centre and airport expansion, I am passionately committed to balancing this with delivering the grassroots, day-to-day things that directly impact the lives of our local residents such as maintaining and improving local roads and parks. Please remember I am always available to discuss any projects or issues you may have. Send an email through to me at lesleigh.elmes@ sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au in the first instance.
Monthly Mooloolah Meeting update
And we’re already off and running with the first Mooloolah Breakfast Meeting taking place last Thursday, providing local residents with an opportunity to hear about upcoming projects, make proposals and raise any concerns. Key items discussed included the new walking path into the Mooloolah Rec. Park ready to have the concrete poured; the bollards to be removed to form an arc shape for family cricket events; and an update that no further information has been provided from Queensland Rail in response to our request for vacant QR land for a small skate facility. The meeting is on the first Thursday of each month at Kenny’s Café at 7.00am for a 7.30am start. Contact Mooloolah Community Centre, Darryl from Mooloolah Hardware, or my office on 5441 8043 or email me for further information. Experiential garden unveiled The wonderful Friends of Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Garden volunteers last week unveiled the fantastic Whipbird Village, which they helped to design, fund and implement, in partnership with council. Among the newest additions to the experiential garden are beautiful Whipbird eggs carved from granite and new ‘pods’ created using living native plants which are entwined within a network of tracks, stepping stones and logs. Be sure to check it out for yourself and let me know what you think.

Movies in Maleny
Next Saturday, April 16 the Maleny Film Society will be screening two films 'Tanna' a matinee at 3.00pm (doors open 2.30pm) and 'Looking for Grace' – evening showing at 7.15pm (dinner from 6.00pm) at the Maleny Community Centre, 23 Maple Street. ‘Tanna’ is a Romeo and Juliet story set on the island of Tanna, Vanuatu. Two young people from the same tribe, Wawa (Marie Wawa) and Dain (Mungau Dain) fall in love, however Wawa’s father has arranged for her to marry a warrior from another tribe in order to quell an escalating conflict between the two tribes. Australian team Bentley Dean and Martin Butler have produced, directed and written the screenplay for this documentary style film, which beautifully captures the ethnographic and spiritual elements of this traditional tribal village. In ‘Looking for Grace’ Australian director Sue Brooks has weaved her magic blending the lives and stories of ordinary people with a backdrop of the stunning Western Australian landscape in this tender but bitter sweet drama. The drama unfolds from each of the characters perspectives in this intimate, funny and very moving story about the complexities of family life. Member’s tickets are available online or at the Information Centre and nonmember tickets at the door. Check the website www.malenyfilmsociety.info for details.
Following the sad passing of talented journalist Michael Berry in January this year, the Maleny Film Society will be screening a selection of major films made by Michael during his residence in Maleny. The films will be shown on Sunday, April 17 at 2.30pm in the Maleny Community Centre and admission will be free. Vice President of the Film Society, Jill Morris, said many members of the community were inspired and encouraged by Michael and this is a rare opportunity for them to pay tribute to him. The films will include ‘The Last Crush’, which Michael made with students of the University of the Sunshine Coast and ‘A Life... R M Williams’.

A little late with this column his month, but as the saying goes - better late than never. You need to be working on your garden now to prepare for winter vegetables now. It’s not too early to put in some broccoli seedlings – they’ll grow rapidly and most likely give you something akin to broccolini. • Plant sweet peas, snow peas, sugar snap peas, climbing peas and bush peas. Plant as either seeds or seedlings into soil that has had some dolomite added. Maybe also try asparagus peas. • Start to reduce the frequency you mow the lawn and start raising the blade height to allow the grass to keep a reasonable amount of leaf during the cooler months. • Fertilise your roses, especially if you haven’t done it for a few years. • It’s time to dig up, divide and replant your hippeastrum and lilium bulbs. • Carefully cut off side shoots of bromeliads to create new plants. Plant these in the garden or in pots using a well-drained potting mix. • Bougainvillea cuttings can be taken now and struck in a good propagation mix. • Plant new pawpaw trees, apply some boron to existing plants at a rate of 20 grams per tree and spray them with a copper spray if black spot is seen. Vegetables Plant beetroot, broccoli, radish, cabbage, leafy lettuce, carrot, celery, cauliflower, Asian greens, garlic, leeks, spring onion, potatoes, sweet potato, turnip, kohl rabi, capsicum, chilli, silver beet, beans and tomato. Flowers Plant alyssum, petunia, marigold, carnation, sweet pea, gaillardia, everlasting daisy, livingstone daisy, sunflower, verbena, pansy, viola, primula, snapdragon, nemesia, iceland poppy, dianthus, cleome and salvia.

Are you looking for an ornamental native tree that you can also get loads of edible fruit from? Then look no further than the Davidson’s Plum. It is one of three species Davidsonia in Australia and by far the most productive. Normally it is seen as a narrow tree with lovely hairy leaves. From a young age it produces pale pink hairy flowers and large juicy purple plum like fruit. The plant can be pruned to keep the size down and also to ease access to the large quantities of fruit it produces. This plant is very popular in the bush food trade as it makes excellent jams, preserves, sauces and wines. The local wildlife will also like this one with many species, especially King Parrots being attracted to the flowers and fruit. It grows best in a semi shaded well drained position. It also makes an interesting pot specimen. Go Green Rainforest Nursery, 2620 Steve Irwin Way, Glenview is open Monday to Saturday 9.00am until 4.00pm. . Local artists, Neville Field and Cathy Condon have outgrown their available studio space and are looking to upsize. Their beautiful Glasshouse Mountains property, with its very productive gardens and gorgeous entertainment balcony is up for sale. The studio space downstairs has previously been used as a teenage retreat and also a home business centre. However, it can no longer cope with these two very productive artists and their growing collection. Cathy works on large paintings, ceramics and other 3D pieces. She is also Creator/ Director of the annual Brisbane Art Prize and Managing Director of the biennial Life Art Worldwide International Arts Expo. Neville creates paintings and handmade Artists Books, while his speciality is linocut and woodblock printmaking, using a custom built etching press. Both of these busy artists exhibit nationally and internationally. They have created a very liveable home surrounded by numerous fruit trees and productive vegetable and herb gardens. Their landscaping has touches reminiscent of Tuscany, a part of Europe they both love. A shaded courtyard at the front is surprisingly private, partly hidden by a healthy hedge and protected by native trees and flowering Frangipani. Youth are our future… now!
I have often heard people say, that children and youth are our future. While that’s true I would also like to think they are our,‘now’. Have you ever heard a teacher say that they learn something about themselves or about the world from their students? They certainly teach us patience! Seriously though, they teach us what is important in life and to keep life in perspective. Perhaps you could name a few things children and youth in your life have taught you to make your life richer and more meaningful? There are numerous stories in the Bible of young people making a difference and important contribution for others. Joseph at the age of 17 was made overseer of the Captain of the Guards house; Ruth was a young widow when she devoted her life to looking after her mother-in-law; Timothy was a young man when Paul began training him for ministry. What’s important in these examples is not just that they fulfilled important responsibilities, but that someone or a group of people entrusted them to have a go. Someone believed that they were

capable and/or trainable. No doubt, there would have been challenging times and failures. This is part of living, growing and learning the ropes of a new job or living in new surroundings. The other part is having people to pick you up, dust you off and support you to keep going. National Youth Week provides our community with a rich opportunity to acknowledge and value young people around us. Some of our youth know where they’re headed and how to get there, while many others are on a journey of self discovery and exploration. As a community let us encourage, support and mentor our young people. They are one of our greatest assets in the now, so that they can ‘Be… a positive for… the Future.’ National Youth Week (Friday, April 8 to Sunday, April 17) ‘Be the Future’

Our girls unfortunately were unsuccessful, but it is early in the season and we wish them luck this week. During the week some of our girls travelled to Maroochy River for their open day. Lesley Eggleston won Runner Up Gross and Val Turner won Runner Up Nett. Well done girls! Good to see Val back on track after a very trying year recovering from back surgery. On Sunday we hosted the opening round of Weekend Match play Pennant. Our girls achieved a strong 5-1 win over Gympie. Next Thursday's competition is Single Stableford sponsored by Trish Dixon and Kathy Moffat. Next Saturday’s event is the ever popular 2 ball Aggregate Stableford Mixed and Wallflowers. This will be a shotgun start with a morning and afternoon field. The ladies welcome new members, beginners and visitors in their competitions on Thursdays and Saturdays. If you would like some more information please contact our President Carolyn Gamble on 5438 7779.

Maleny Golf Club celebrates first member’s hole-in-one Less than a year after the official course opening on June 30 last year, Maleny Golf Club is celebrating gold member Hans Van Sambeeck’s achievement of every golfer’s Holy Grail – a hole-in-one. On most week days Hans, 66, heads out at first light for a quick 9 holes before breakfast – often on his own. However, on Tuesday morning last week (March 29) Hans was accompanied by good friend and keen golfer Bob Hawkins. After teeing off into the early morning sun on the 173 metre Par 3 Third hole the duo could not locate Hans’ golf ball despite being confident that it should have made the green or stopped just short. Hans, who owns a market garden on acreage in

Maleny where he has lived with his family for the past 33 years, began to despair when his ball could not be found. “We then decided to check the hole just in case and incredibly there it was lying in the bottom of the cup,” Hans beamed when he arrived back at the golf shop to proudly claim the club’s first hole-inone on the course proper. Unfortunately his rare golfing feat was not achieved during a competition in order to warrant an entry on the club’s honour boards. However, Hans has the scorecard signed by his playing partner to serve as a proud reminder and conversation piece for many years to come! “I’m so glad I wasn’t on my own and that Bob was there with me – it’s such an amazing feeling,” Hans said. The odds of an amateur golfer achieving a hole-inone are estimated to be around 12,500-to-1 and Hans is the first member to achieve this golfing milestone on the new Maleny Golf Course. The only other hole-in-one at Maleny was achieved in 2014 by John Oxenham during a competition on the temporary Par 3 second hole prior to development of the current course designed by renowned golf architect Graham Papworth.

Just for Laughs
It Costs No More To Hire A Proven Professional
Fishy tale A customer at Stingray Fishmongers marvelled at the owner's quick wit and intelligence. "Tell me, Simon, what makes you so smart?" "I wouldn't share my secret with just anyone," Simon replied lowering his voice so the other shoppers won't hear. "But since you're a good and faithful customer, I'll let you in on it. Fish heads. You eat enough of them, you'll be positively brilliant." "You sell them here?" the customer asks. "Only $4.00 a piece," says Simon.
The customer buys three. A week later, he's back in the store complaining that the fish heads were disgusting and he isn't any smarter. "You didn't eat enough," says Simon. The customer goes home with 20 more fish heads. Two weeks later, he's back and this time he's really angry ."Hey, Simon," he complains, "you're selling me fish heads for $4.00 a piece when I can buy the whole fish for $2.00. You’re ripping me off!" "You see?" says Simon, "you're smarter already." Submitted by Kim, Reesville

SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 Mars goes retrograde in your Sagittarius sign from April 17 to May 27. This generally means a time of review or revision. You should seek the best insurance policies this week and find the most efficient policy for health awards. Generally speaking, there is intense focus with financial affairs. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 You should feel glad to be alive this week to enjoy basic home and family pleasures. Perhaps one of these will be a lively social connection or you are hosting an excellent party. With Mars going retrograde until the end of June it is important to learn about your self defeating patterns now. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 Things happening close to home, and in your home, can be both exciting and full of mutual care and understanding. Mercury brings good news in its aspects to Jupiter and Pluto showing the best times to make your way to closer success with business associates or any others in your social network. PISCES February 20 – March 20 There is a very good chance this week could be really lucrative. A sudden windfall could also be destabilising with the unexpected, or unsettling, aspects colouring the picture. Impatience is not the best answer if you want to plant positive money seeds for the future. Enjoy small pleasures.

LEO July 23 – August 22 This week Mercury makes a satisfactory aspect to Neptune, so you could look for a very favourable indication that others are receptive to your plans and show support. Also good news, as Mercury makes even better aspects to Jupiter, for your career and transformative Pluto regarding renovations. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 Throughout April 17 and 18 the Moon moves through your sign. In its aspect to Mars going retrograde, together with Pluto in retrograde, the week forms with old plans revisited and transformed into fresh options. You will seek that which has intrinsic long term values for you. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 High passions can be aroused as Uranus moves progressively in its transit through Aries in opposition to your own sign. Uranus offer brings a conflict, or you could even resent somebody telling you what to do! This would most likely a family member. Your ruler, Venus, is also in Aries supplying amorous affairs. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 You can make in-depth progress in relationship communications and receive the financial news, or answers that you seek. Venus, making a good aspect with Mars, may mean money or love and that may start with a practical show of appreciation for your kind efforts. New people burst onto the scene!

Week beginning 13/04/2016 ARIES March 21 – April 21 You can expect more straight forward happiness as you are into a week with an overall good mood period. You can make progress now in a new venture, or a foreign agenda. The weekend is a marker for important days as Mars, your ruler, goes retrograde until June. Avoid overload of detail. TAURUS April 22 – May 21 The planet Mercury now moves into your sign to give you practical thought processes, deliberate and patient communication skills. An inner problem may surface as a selfdefeating pattern, that you keep returning to, again and again. An unexpected event brings you a moody outburst! GEMINI May 22 – June 21 Because Mars will go retrograde in Sagittarius, this effects the Gemini sign, so be aware of others self-righteous behaviour. Just because they have different beliefs, it is still wise to listen to the other’s opinion as this might in fact give you the opportunity to empower your own opinions now. CANCER June 22 – July 22 Expect a wonderful time mid-month now as Venus, moving through Aries, gives a great aspect to a zesty Mars in Sagittarius. This can boost your career through a complex compatibility and/or an easy going friendship. A member of the opposite sex becomes a useful ally with news and rewards.
