JULY 13 2016

Hi Everyone

R

egular readers may have noticed that since GC&M News has become the only weekly newspaper in the Glasshouse Country and Blackall Range area we have had to double the space we allocate to our sports section. We do have a number of sports clubs, particularly the bowls and the golf clubs, who are very keen contributors. However it is also great to see how many other clubs and schools are sending us in their updates, snippets, and good news, as well as their results. In this week’s edition we also have a great story about a ‘Community Cricket Day’ that is being organised in Peachester on July 24. The event sounds like a really great way to bring together players of all ages for a bit of friendly competition and engage the kids in the fun that team sports can bring. If you are part of a sporting club and would like to share your results, significant achievements of individual players or encourage others in the community to get involved, feel free to send in a story for us to include in the paper. Contributions and photos (150kb and above) can be sent directly to editorial@ gcnews.com.au Regards,

PS: Also if you are a proud parent – it is ok to show off our sports stars of the future and send us in a short story and a photo of what they have been doing.

With around 400 students from various schools throughout the Sunshine Coast competing, the talented duo were excited and grateful to have won a total of $9,000 for their musical efforts which resulted in $6,000 for the college and $3,000 in vouchers for the two young musicians. The Year 8 students first performed together at their school’s talent night and have now been playing music and busking together for around 18 months. Their music teacher, Ebony Hilton enrolled them in the competition and the two students have been thankful for her encouragement and support both in the lead up to and during the competition. They are both passionate about music and have been playing for a number of years. Julian started playing guitar in Prep and was introduced to the Blues in Year 4 which has carried his interest ever since. Bakani enjoys playing all percussion instruments and took drum lessons when he was 10-years-old. He said he feels that his drumming “comes from the heart” and that spirit was obviously translated through his djembe playing into the winning performance with Julian. The students decided to perform a South African inspired cover of a song called ‘Laduma’. Which showcased their musical skills. “We wanted to play a song that also expressed

different cultures and make our performance an experience for the audience. Once we were up there it was so much fun to perform and connect with the audience,” explained Julian. The duo won their first performance during the heat rounds with huge support from online voting. Going into the finals the following week the two students were not expecting to win - so were pleasantly shocked to be judged competition winners. “We were very grateful and just want to thank the community for voting for us, our teachers and family and everyone who supported us,” added Bakani. After conducting a school survey through the music department, the $6,000 win has been excitingly earmarked towards plans to establish a school recording studio. As for the $3,000 worth of shared vouchers, the two students have plans to purchase electronic, surfing and skating equipment - as well as something special for mum and dad.

Pioneering PhD brain plasticity rehabilitation research By Sonia Clark Landsborough resident Ragnar Purje has recently been awarded his doctorate in cognitive neuroscience from CQ University in what could prove to be a groundbreaking area of acquired brain injury rehabilitation therapy.

with a completely optimistic outlook to his life which previously had been severely limited. Following on from an extensive background in undergraduate and post graduate study in physical education, sports science, psychology, education and health counselling, Ragnar began his doctoral research in 2011. Under the supervision of Professor Ken Purnell at CQ University, Ragnar was encouraged to develop and advance an innovative acquired brain injury rehabilitation theory he had successfully applied in the early 1990’s. It is now known as Complex Brain Based Multi-Movement Therapy (CBBMMT). In 2011, Ragnar met Professor Ken Purnell at a ‘Mind and Potential’ conference in Sydney and he encouraged Ragnar to consider developing a thesis based on the work he had done with John Famechon believing the work to be unique and at the forefront of Acquired Brian Injury (ABI) research. With a doctoral thesis title of ‘The phenomenon of the recovery of Johnny Famechon: A discourse of resilience and brain plasticity’, Ragnar with the support of his supervisors and faculty, commenced his study into the use of movement as rehabilitative therapy for ABI. “It was through Ken’s initiative and the insight from CQ University into developing new ideas and perspectives that I was encouraged to undertake my doctorate,” said Ragnar. “It then took the following five years to surface the (CBBMMT) theory and give it a name.” The basis of this fascinating theory is that

In 1991, former Australian featherweight boxing champion Johnny Famechon was hit by a speeding car while out running and was rendered totally incapacitated through an acquired brain injury (ABI). In late1993, Ragnar ran into a mutual friend of the former boxer who explained that despite medical intervention, John had been totally incapacitated with no signs of improvement and it was feared he would never walk again. Ragnar had been a long term practitioner of Goju Karate which he believed had positively conditioned his brain, and with his interest in physical education and sports science, he wondered if he could assist in the boxer’s ailment. Intuitively he felt that the brain could be influenced by movement and that complex movement could possibly improve John’s condition. After meeting with John and his wife Glenys and receiving their support to trial this radical theory of rehabilitation, in December 1993, Ragnar started a weekly rehabilitation program based on movement. From suffering a condition so severe that he could barely talk or move, within 12 weeks John was able to take steps and within another four weeks he was able to run 10 metres. Over the years his condition improved dramatically to include bike riding and a return to boxing moves

neurological and anatomical changes can be influenced by complex multi movement therapy. These changes essentially create more neurons and these connections make the brain thicker and deeper. The increased physiological complexity in the brain creates the potential for the brain to create more neurotransmitters and electrical firings which provides the power to change from an incapacitated state to one of movement and recovery. Having only recently been awarded his doctorate in this area, Ragnar has already received interest from the United States, and no doubt we will hear more about this pioneering theory that places Australia at the forefront of ABI research.

Hospital keeping pace with growth The state government is investing more than $11 million this year into the $17 million Caboolture Hospital upgrade, to help the facility keep up with regional growth and ensure it continues providing the best possible care to local residents. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Cameron Dick visited the hospital last Wednesday to kick off the final stage of construction for a new 32-bed adult inpatient ward. The 2016-17 Budget includes $7.1 million for Metro North Hospital and Health Service to develop the ward and up to $4 million to create up to 300 more car parks to help ease access to the hospital. “Combining this infrastructure upgrade with an injection of more clinical staff where they are needed most in this hospital means Caboolture residents can be confident they are receiving the best health care possible without leaving home.” The first stage of construction for the new ward was completed recently, including the establishment of a new Executive Centre for the relocation of hospital support staff and IT infrastructure, with the final stage of construction set to begin within days. “About 40 construction jobs, direct and indirect, will be created in coming months as we power ahead to finish this ward by early 2017,” the Premier said. Mr Dick said the vacated space would now be converted into the new ward, which when complete will cover a range of adult specialties, including coronary and cardiac care, as well as general medicine.

“Bed numbers will also be boosted as part of this expansion from 233 to 265, meaning an extra 2500 adult patients will be able to be treated in this hospital every year,” Mr Dick said. “The new ward will also allow staff to deliver more personalised care to the growing number of elderly patients being treated at this hospital.” The start of the final stage of construction follows the recent announcement of a $4 million commitment to the car park project, and an influx of nursing graduates, midwives and interns joining the hospital. “This year, we have seen a record number of nursing and midwife graduates and junior doctors join Caboolture Hospital and these numbers are only expected to grow over coming years,” Mr Dick said. “We have also seen five highly respected and experienced senior doctors join the Emergency Department to continue to meet demand from the Caboolture community. “These dedicated clinicians are at the frontline supporting our patients, helping to ease the pressure created by a surge in patients experienced in our hospitals over the flu season, and caring for the increased number of newborns entering the world at this hospital this year.”

Hoons wreck Landsborough footpath Last week, a thoughtless act of vandalism in Landsborough has upset local residents. It was reported to GC&M News that over a couple of nights, hoons have torn up the grass verge, footpath and entrance into the Old Gympie Road Girl Guides facility at Landsborough. The area is cared for by local volunteer residents, some of which are elderly. According to one, it has taken them years to get the area looking as nice as it did before the senseless damage. “The tyre tracks have left deep ruts which will make mowing much harder. We’ll have to spend a lot of time and money now repairing the area … all because of someone’s complete lack of common sense and social values,” she said. The matter has been reported to the police, and anyone with any further information – or to report similar incidences – can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

NBN appeal Beerwah tower refusal As reported previously in GC&M News, the Sunshine Coast Council had refused an NBN application to construct a wireless broadband transmission tower on Rupari Hill, behind the Beerwah Recycle market. According to council, the tower did not meet the necessary requirements under their strategic town plan, an assessment of which NBN have now taken umbrage to. As a result, NBN have launched a legal appeal through the Planning and Environment Court, seeking that the court overrule council and approve their development application.

The tower is pivotal to NBN’s plans in Beerwah, as it is the keystone tower in their as-of-yet established network of towers from Landsborough to Peachester to Glass House. NBN claim in their application that there are no suitable alternative locations for the tower, an assertion which overrides councils planning rules and guidelines. Without the Beerwah tower, NBN may be forced to extend their fibre to the node network to cover more houses which were previously slated to receive the lesser quality fixed wireless broadband.

The University of the Sunshine Coast is about to offer beginner courses for people wanting to learn a new language – a process that has been shown to improve brain function. Registration is now open for short courses in seven languages – Chinese (Mandarin), French, German, Italian, Indonesian, Japanese and Spanish. The eight-week courses will be held at USC’s Sippy Downs campus from 6.15pm - 8.15pm on Tuesdays, starting August 2. Lecturer in Education Dr Peter Grainger said the introductory courses would cover basic conversation and culture appreciation. “Participants who complete the courses can progress to the next level of elementary courses starting in October,” he said. More information on the beginner language courses can be found at www.usc.edu.au/usc-languages.

World Scleroderma Day

Contributed by Cheyenne MacLeod The Maleny Representatives of the Sunshine Coast Scleroderma Support Group held an information stand outside the IGA, to coincide with World Scleroderma Day, Wednesday, June 29. It is ironic to be held in the middle of our winter as cold weather aggravates the symptoms. The objective was to raise awareness of the condition in the wider community while passing on helpful information to any who have Scleroderma or their family and friends. Kerry Noone and Good support is very important as the patient is often Cheyenne MacLeo d isolated due to the symptoms. After a rather cold start a beautiful sunny day followed and a steady stream of inquisitive people enjoyed chatting and receiving brochures and advice. Anyone wanting further information contact Cheyenne MacLeod 0417 615 733.

Wittafest planning

Funfest is back

Glasshouse Christian College is hosting its bi-annual Funfest again this year on Saturday, July 30, from 11.00am – 4.00pm. Held on the grounds of the college on Roberts Road, Beerwah, Funfest is always a great fun family day out. The rides this year are the Super chair swing, the Super slide, the Jungle Safari jumping castle, Mad Hatter’s tea cup and saucers, mechanical surfboard, laser tag and new this year, the Scrambler and Gladiator Duel. Ride passes for unlimited rides all day are on sale now and are only $28.00 if purchased before July 22. After July 22, or on the day, ride passes will be $35.00. Passes can be purchased online at trybooking.com (just search for GCC Funfest 2016) or at the college admin on school days. Individual ride tickets will also be available at Funfest for $4.00 per ride. As well as the excitement of the rides, Funfest always has so much more on offer. From the delicious food, the market stalls, all day entertainment (including Andino the Magician!) and amazing auction prizes to bid on and win, Funfest definitely has something for everyone.

Contributed by Fi Emberton The event on Saturday, September 17, is a Witta Rec Club (WRC) initiative which celebrates historic Teutoburg/Witta and aims to bring the community together for an all-weather festival and a free family event. The day will include music, traditional games, a photo booth, historical dress-ups, food and drink and displays of local stories at the festival sites including the church, school, cemetery and sports ground. WRC are able to hold the free event as a result of grant applications and sponsors and rely on locals to volunteer for organising and staffing the event. If WRC make a surplus after expenses, the money goes towards ongoing insurance and operational commitments for their sports facility, which is owned by the local community. Thanks to Sunshine Coast Council, who are providing grant money to assist with the cost of undercover areas at Wittafest through a community event grant, which will assist in the cost of hiring a marquee. Hope to see you all at the Witta Recreation Grounds on Saturday, September 17, 10.00am – 6.00pm. Don’t forget to like us on Facebook, to keep up with plans for the day – Wittafest.

Embracia in Woodford

Aged Care at its Best

We provide excellent, quality aged care for all levels of care, including both emergency and planned respite care & specialised dementia care.

Twelve months ago, I needed to find a full time nursing care facility for my 92-year-old mother. This was made more difficult, as she was to move from Sydney, leaving all she had ever known, to be able to go into care closer to me on the Sunshine Coast. My decision to move mum into Embracia, Woodford was easily made, having visited numerous other nursing homes in the Hinterland and Sunshine Coast area. The transition for mum to Embracia has been a seamless one for her and truly a joy for me as her daughter. We were able to create a beautiful room for her, a new home for a new beginning. Her added delight is her balcony overlooking trees and with country vistas. The general staff at Embracia and the very high standards of nursing staff have been outstanding to mum in every aspect of their support for her as well as her everyday care needs. The staff meets the needs of each individual resident with care, understanding, empathy, and friendship. All with the aim to help residents feel that they are in fact in their own home and not just a care facility. Residents can participate together in a variety of organised activities within the home and yet Embracia presents daily, as a calm, efficient and peaceful environment for the residents allowing mum to enjoy her daily reading and quieter activities. The day bus trips are always enjoyed. Embracia has given mum the dignity and respect she truly deserves. Now at 93, when I bring mum back from a day out, I open the door to her room and she quietly always says, “I’m home.”

Marilyn K, Maleny

Come in to see the Embracia difference – the comfort of home, with a little extra luxury and the quality care you need.

Cafe de Fudge closed

Mick and Julie Ryan would like to thank their loyal customers and friends for their support during their time running Cafe de Fudge next to the Big Barrel on the way to Maleny. Family circumstances have meant that as of June 30, they have had to close the doors. The business is on the market, but for those who will miss their amazing range of fudge, they have secured a stall at Eumundi Markets in the Eumundi Market Town Square selling their

fudge, shaved ice and popcorn, every Wednesday and Saturday.

Learn how to simplify your business Join Wayne Hutcheson from Red Day Coaching for some great tips on juggling work and life commitments at Maleny and Beerwah Libraries in August. According to Wayne, many of us dream of being our own boss but unfortunately for some, the dream ends as soon as we start our own business. “At the free session people will find out how to set up systems to give them more free time,” he said. “Attendees can learn about the activities they should and should not be doing and how to make

smart goals. “I’ll share some of the ‘need to know’ lessons on how to simplify running a business while energising to have more control. “My tips will outline self-sufficient business models that allow people to have a life outside of the office.” Bookings are essential for the free session at Maleny Library, on Tuesday, August 2 from 4.00pm or Beerwah Library on Friday, August 5 from 10.00am by phoning 5475 8989.

We are tackling Tourism After the successful installation of CCTV’s in Glass House, Beerwah and Landsborough, the Glasshouse Country Chamber is looking at a new challenge – and that’s tourism. We have the mountains, they are on our turf and they are very special, but are we failing to market them properly? How much accommodation do we currently provide for visitors and how can we improve the amount that is available? This is about looking at opportunities that are currently available. The Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce is launching ‘Glasshouse Country Tourism Group/Body/ Committee’ (the name is yet to be confirmed and we are open to suggestions). Students of the Sunshine Coast University made a start and provided us with some simple projects that can be implemented straight away without a huge budget. We have uploaded these onto our website and would encourage you to have a read and get inspired! We invite all existing tourism operators, business owners, home owners with spare rooms and/or people with a vision to bring their ideas, expertise and knowledge to the table. This project will encompass the entire region, from Beerburrum to Glenview and out to Peachester and Mount Mellum. The Chamber’s next meeting on Tuesday, July 19 from 5.30pm for 6.00pm start at the Glasshouse Sports Club will focus on the tourism potential in the Glasshouse Country and Hinterland Region. Be part of the founding group. We would like to see you at our upcoming meeting – see invitation on page 12.

As you ease yourselves into the new financial year have you considered your plan to put yourself into a healthier and wealthier place and contributing to a more sustainable community? Well the Maleny Chamber of Commerce, along with Sunshine Coast Council and the Maleny Credit Union, are making it easier for you by bringing together the Hinterland Finance and Sustainability Expo. This free event will be held at the Maleny Showground on July 23 from 9.00am – 3.00pm. Everyone knows how important it is to manage a budget and understand how finance works, and for the need to start financial planning and investing in our future, but for some it is just such a daunting task to start on your own. The President of Maleny Commerce Spencer Shaw said that over the past few years, the Chamber could see that there was a gap in the financial understanding of our community, between the desire to make things happen, and having the skills and knowledge to achieve it. The expo is bringing together a number of financial and environmental specialists who will share their knowledge and inspire visitors to take action to improve their personal, family and business situations and contribute to making a more sustainable community. “Ultimately we wanted to bring a unique blend of experts together to act as a catalyst for change by giving people the knowledge and understanding that they need for their stage of life and experience,” he said. The program combines a group of motivated business people / exhibitors as well as two inspiring speakers and a number of panel discussions where attendees can either contribute to the discussion or quietly sit back and take it all in.” There will be three panel discussions topics – ‘Growing Business for Sustainable Communities’, ‘Financial Literacy’ and ‘Ethical Investments’. The event will also feature 36 businesses who represent either financial or sustainability services and products. To find out more about the events program head along to the website http://www.malenycommerce.org. au/events/finance-and-sustainabilityexpo/ or head to the Facebook page Hinterland Finance & Sustainability Expo

Maleny Restorative Circle practice group The Maleny Restorative Circle group is open to anyone who has an interest in conflict resolution and nonviolent communication. This process was created by Dominic Barter in the Favelas in Brazil in the 1990's and has its foundations in Nonviolent Communication. The Restorative Circle provides an inclusive approach to dealing with conflict in which everybody can be heard and relationships restored. “Life is messy and no one is free of conflict. It’s a part of life. Restorative Circle work is a great tool to work with and I love the fact that the circle holds itself,” said one group participant. The Restorative Circle practice group works with a ‘live’ conflict situation. Group members’ role play participants in the conflict while the facilitator overseas the restorative circle approach to working through the situation. The outcome is the ability to see a way forward and the process allows all participants the opportunity to be heard. No prior experience is necessary. All are welcome. The Maleny Restorative Circle practice group is free of charge and meets from 9.30am -12.30pm at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre on the third Thursday of each month. For more information or to book a place contact Ana - ana@calcomm.org.au or 0407 165 308.

Are you using modern selling techniques?

Business feature Tony Ellem is a Transportable Shade Shed reseller from the Hervey Bay region. Like many other people, he was looking for a viable way to seek additional income streams, not only for himself, but ultimately for his family. A truck driver for over 38 years and a father of eight, Tony had been looking for a work from home opportunity for some time. Realising that for the last 10 years his truck driving career had constantly taken him away from his family, Tony was keen to look at other opportunities that would allow him more time at home. Earlier this year while working away, he came across a Gumtree ad promoting the Transportable Shade Sheds and Saver6.com partnership. The potential of the alternative work option offered by selling the versatile Australian made products seemed appealing. Living in the Wide Bay area where many residents own boats, trailers and caravans, Tony saw a huge market for the types of covering that Transportable Shade Sheds offered. So in April this year, he became a reseller for the region from Hervey Bay through to Maryborough and beyond. As well as seeking a more family friendly lifestyle option, and with the region experiencing limited employment possibilities, Tony was keen to have a business that he could involve his children in. Earlier this year, Tony established Ellem Family Shade Solutions in a strategy to provide additional revenue streams for his family. In our fast paced social media driven world, traditional small business resellers like Tony can greatly benefit from the additional online sales and marketing mentorship that the collaboration between Transportable Shade Sheds and Saver6.com can offer. Providing a modern approach to business, the Saver6.com platform presents resellers a number of up-to-date sales and marketing techniques and opportunities. These include target marketing, which markets to consumers based on research into their interests, hobbies and needs; and marketing gateway, which is the process of gaining website traffic through social media sites, and creates content that attracts attention and encourages sharing across their social networks and online training and professional website creation. The Saver6.com and Transportable Shade Sheds collaboration lets resellers like Tony, have access to over $60,000 of online promotion, training and mentorship at no cost for the first 12 months. With the first 12 months of any small business being the most critical time, the Saver 6.com business model is one that has been established to succeed. Global Business Manager Tyler Maclaren says “to succeed in business now you need to market your business utilising as many social media and digital media platforms as possible, because if you don’t someone else will, and you must work to maintain your competitive advantage.” If you know someone looking for a Transportable Shade Shed in the Wide Bay and surrounding region contact Tony via social media, email tellem57@ gmail.com or call 0407 377 129. If you would like to find out more about opportunities in your area or are keen to be your own boss, then contact the team at Transportable Shade Sheds on 1300 667 433 or Saver6.com on 5405 3620.

Please call Tony Ellem, a Saver6.com member and a Transportable Shade Shed specialist. He is available to help you with your Transportable Shade Shed purchase, from your initial enquiry, right through to installing it on your property. Give him a call today!

Environment Fishing permits now needed for local dams Changes to Queensland’s recreational freshwater fishing permit system came into effect recently with the introduction of the Stocked Impoundment Permit Scheme (SIPS) for Baroon Pocket Dam and Ewen Maddock Dam. Fisheries Queensland Manager Implementation Tony Ham said that an additional 31 dams and weirs across Queensland have been added to the SIPS scheme. “Impoundments are 'put, grow and take' fisheries where most stocked species will not reproduce, and the impoundments need to be stocked regularly,” Mr Ham said. “The money anglers pay for their stocked impoundment permits goes to local stocking groups for purchasing native fish fingerlings and also covers scheme administration costs.” Mr Ham said all recreational fishers over 18 years wanting to fish in prescribed stocked impoundments – including Ewen Maddock and Baroon Pocket Dams – will require a permit. “While previously only one permit was needed per couple the expanded scheme requires all anglers over the age of 18 to have a permit,” he said. “The permit fees have been fixed for the next five years at $50.00 yearly, $36.00 for an annual concession and a weekly permit is $10.00.” Funds collected from the permits are reallocated back into the local SIPS dams, where they will be utilised by the departmentally approved local fish stocking group – Ewen Maddock Fish Management Inc. – for the purchase of fingerlings to release and enhance the recreational fishing for permit holders. Australia Post will manage the sale of permits which can be purchased online, over the phone or at Australia Post outlets and sub-agents. To buy a digital permit, fishers can follow the links on the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries webpage www.daf.qld.gov.au/fisheries/recreational

Barung Landcare Who doesn’t like jelly?

The White Jelly Fungus – Tremella fuciformis – is a tropical and subtropical jelly fungus found on hardwood logs after heavy rains. This distinctive, translucent white jelly is characterised by its soft, folded, convoluted shape and smooth, shiny surface. This fungus is fairly widespread: in the hinterland it can be found on the dead branches of broadleaf trees where it grows to about 4cm high and 7cm across, often in extensive colonies. Like many jellies, Tremella fuciformis has a life cycle that is intertwined with that of another fungus: White Jelly is actually a parasite and grows on a range of saprophytic (feeding on decaying organic matter) host fungi. The host fungi are often obscured by the showy parasite but are sometimes visible as dark, scalylooking blobs on the rotting wood around the Tremella fuciformis fruiting bodies. In China, Japan and Taiwan, White Jelly Fungus is known as 'Snow Fungus' and is cultivated for culinary and medicinal uses. Chinese and Japanese herbal medicine practitioners have been using Snow Fungus for over 2000 years to heal various conditions, including wrinkles and the common cold. Barung Landcare is a leading community-based organisation working to develop ethical solutions for a sustainable future. We support local and regional community empowerment to conserve and enhance the rich diversity of natural resources of the Blackall Range and environs. Babies, Kids &

Parents

Who’s afraid of the big bad wolf?

Contributed by Senior Constable Martin Whether we’ve ducked into a shop to grab some lunch or are doing a walkthrough of a shopping centre, there’s always the inevitable parent who will stop in front of us, point us out to their kids and loudly announce, “there’s the police – if you’re not good, they’ll come and take you away.” Or the other gem, “that police officer has come to get you because you were naughty/wouldn’t sleep/eat/share your toys with your sister…” After far too many years of being politely silent, these days I crouch down to the wide-eyed, mortified child (who is usually hiding behind the legs of a parent), smile and tell them, “no, I’m not going to take you away. Police don’t do that.” Quite often this results in a stunned parent glaring back at me like I’ve broken some sort of secret behavioural code. We’re not the big, bad wolf. Don’t make us out to be. We regularly come into contact with children in our working lives, usually it’s an upsetting situation they’re caught up in; they may have become lost, often it involves domestic violence situations, and at times, heart-breaking child abuse cases. In every instance, where we deal with young kids, the very last thing they need is to feel fear of us. We are here to help them, protect them, keep them safe. If your little one is too afraid to even look at us from fear of being ‘taken away to jail’, how are they meant to have the reassurance and openness to tell us when something is wrong, or run to us when they are afraid? Instead, why not encourage your children to give us a wave, say hi, and smile? We’re human – we don’t have big claws, gnashing teeth and crazy eyes (well, not after a coffee anyway!). Many of us have children of our own and love it when we get a big wave from a little one as we’re driving around from one job to the next. We sometimes have shifts where we don’t see anything positive or pleasant at all, and there’s nothing more welcoming than an excited smile and a wave from children passing by. If we see you, we won’t huff and puff or blow your house down – we will wave back!

Free playgroup membership for Queensland families

Every Queensland family with a child under one will be eligible for a free 12-month Playgroup Queensland membership from July 1, Education Minister Kate Jones said recently. “From 1 July, eligible families can register online at www.playgroupqld.com. au or by telephone 1800 171 882 to receive the Play Stars offer. “The first three years of a child’s life are crucial for development, so creating more opportunities for children to learn, grow and develop through play is vital. “Play Stars will also help connect parents with other parents in a relaxed environment where they can share experiences, learn from each other and build social networks. “The Palaszczuk Government has secured a five-year partnership with Playgroup Queensland, the peak body for playgroups in our state, to deliver the Play Stars initiative. I encourage as many families as possible to register as Play Stars and use the Play Stars website to locate their nearest playgroup or perhaps even create their own new local playgroup.” Playgroup Queensland CEO Ian Coombe said he welcomed Play Stars, saying the initiative was a great boost to the organisation’s aim of providing quality opportunities for young children to learn through play, while supporting parents and carers in their role as first teachers. “Play is the easiest way to help a child learn and grow because ‘play’ is fun; it is how a child learns,” Mr Coombe said. “It gives the best possible start to childhood through connecting and bonding – with benefits that last a lifetime. “Being part of a playgroup allows families to develop a sense of belonging within their community and gives them reassurance that they are not alone in their parental journey. “It also plays an informal role in connecting families with other local information sources, services, networks and community activities.” The Play Stars offer applies to any Playgroup Queensland-affiliated playgroup. More information on Play Stars including how to register is available at: www.playgroupqld.com.au

Safety visit for families

Contributed by Carla Schultz Recently the team from GM Holden Buckle Up Kids visited the Goodstart Early Learning Centre at Glass House Mountains to do a free mobile safety seat check for our families. They were able to check the installation of the car seats in the centres families cars and also offered advice on moving and installing additional car seats. Holden provide this event free of charge at some of their dealerships, schools, childcare centres and other community events.

Approved soccer training for kids aged 18 months -7 years Their message is to ensure that children are travelling safely in their cars. This was a very intriguing event for the children and we carried on talking about car safety and what we should do when we get into our cars.

Pre-driving research needs 15-year-olds A new University of the Sunshine Coast study will examine how parents start preparing their 15-year-olds for driving, and how they follow through on this instruction when children get their learner’s licences at 16. Senior Research Fellow Dr Bridie Scott-Parker, Leader of USC’s Adolescent Risk Research Unit, said the 18-month project would provide a strong foundation for improving young driver road safety. The project is seeking pre-learner drivers aged 15 and a half who anticipate getting their learner’s licence when they turn 16 years old, as well as the parent or primary caregiver who will provide most of their driver training. It will involve four evaluation sessions, a survey and driving in the driving simulator at the University’s Sippy Downs campus.

“Once the pre-learner driver has acquired their learner’s licence, we will ask them to record a session of parent driving instruction using a GoPro camera,” Dr Scott-Parker said. “Young drivers and their parents will receive $50.00 after each of the first three evaluations, totalling $150. Parents and young drivers who complete all four evaluations will receive an additional payment to cover the cost of the learner’s licence ($155.05).” “The aim is to learn more about the way parents provide driving instruction to their children through both the pre-learner and learner licence phases.” For further details, contact Research Assistant Ms Leigh Wilks on 0423 095 792 or Dr ScottParker at bscottpa@usc.edu.au.

Health Conscious Families Have you ever considered having a spinal check-up? Your spine is one of the most important structures of your body, yet most people ignore spinal health until pain is present. Just like cavities in your teeth often don’t cause pain until the tooth is quite decayed, spinal problems often don’t cause pain until they’re quite advanced. That’s why regular check-ups at the dentist AND the chiropractor are a great idea to maintain good health in children and adults.

*According to a large review of the current scientific literature published in 2014, 9% of 10-year-olds and 37% of 20-year-olds had spinal disc degeneration with NO pain or symptoms. Isn’t that shocking!? When you consider all of the falls, knocks, sporting injuries, etc that children face – it’s less surprising. So it’s a good idea to have a spinal check early in life. But what about the safety of visiting a chiropractor? According to the research, over the past 31 years, there have been NO deaths and only one questionable injury to a child following chiropractic care in over 350 million adjustments. That is remarkably safe! *Source: http://www.ajnr.org/content/early/2014/11/27/ajnr.A4173.full.pdf

If you’ve never had a spinal check for you or your family, now is a great time. A full chiropractic spine and nervous system exam

is only $29!

**Special offer is for examination only and does not include treatment. If spinal problems are detected, a full report with treatment recommendations will be provided. Child adjustments are $40, Adults are $50. Discounts for families available.

Greyhound racing to be banned in NSW The New South Wales government will ban greyhound racing from July 1, next year. A Special Commission of Enquiry into the greyhound racing industry has found overwhelming evidence of systemic animal cruelty, including mass greyhound killings and live baiting. Enquiry head Michael McHugh found that up to 20% of trainers engage in live baiting and 180 greyhounds a year sustain ‘catastrophic injuries’ during races. In response to the report, NSW Premier Mike Baird said that they were left with no acceptable course of action except to close the industry down. “This is the inevitable conclusion to be drawn from the appalling revelations in Mr McHugh’s report and his considered view that any other measures

are unlikely to protect animals from further cruelty,” Mr Baird said. NSW is the first Australian state to ban greyhound racing but, are following in the footsteps of many jurisdictions across the world. Following Mr Baird’s announcement, the ACT government have flagged a similar ban in Canberra. The Animal Welfare League Queensland has called on the Queensland Government to follow the lead of New South Wales and the ACT. “It’s a huge step in the fight for the rights of these placid, beautiful dogs,” Animal Welfare League CEO Denise Bradley said. “We’re calling on the Queensland State Government to follow this incredible animal welfare example set by the NSW Premier.” However, Racing Queensland has reiterated its support for the continuation of greyhound racing in Queensland. The 2015 Queensland Commission of Inquiry made recommendations around industry reform and defined a framework to facilitate the continuation of greyhound racing in Queensland. “Animal welfare is at the forefront of the industry,” said Racing Queensland Acting Chief Executive Officer Sam Adams. “Queensland has already taken major steps in the process of reform with the establishment of the Queensland Racing Integrity Commission (QRIC), the adoption of the recommendations made and the firm action taken by Racing Queensland to remove individuals involved in animal welfare breaches from the industry.”

You Said It Response to NBN knock backs

The decision by Sunshine Coast Council to knock back four out of five towers proposed for various parts of the district (GC&M News, June 29) must give NBN a message that they are not really looking at what they are doing here. It’s a concern that they have so far seemed unable to take into account that this region is a high tourist area and a region of great natural beauty, and that the council has a set of regulations in the Town Planning provisions regarding scenic areas. NBN seems to totally ignore council's town planning requirements - you can't put 42 to 55 metre towers here onto a scenic route and expect it to be approved. Kylie Lindsay, the NBN Corporate Affairs Manager, is simply not doing her job. It’s apparent she hasn't familiarised herself and the organisation with council requirements. She is quoted as saying - "NBN consults extensively with the local community and councils to achieve the best outcomes." I'm sure many in the Maleny, Conondale, Witta, Peachester, Glass House and Burgess Avenue community think of this as a joke. The consultation process leaves much to be desired and this has been stated by correspondents in your paper before - that NBN comes with a fixed tower proposal that gives the community no room to make suggestions. We are asked to comment on things already decided. That is not a consultation process. Kylie Lindsay hedged when asked if they would seek federal or state intervention with council. If they do that in any form this will further alienate communities that are already unhappy with the way NBN goes about putting these microwave towers into a community. Is it good PR to override both council and community wishes on these towers as could happen? Richard Giles Conondale

Special thanks

I write to express my thanks to Maleny Singers for their wonderful concerts performed with so much skill and professionalism last weekend in Maleny. The good attendance at all three events shows how much they are appreciated each year. We look forward to another series next year as well as the Christmas Concert in December this year. Well done and congratulations. Neil Payne Maleny

Sunshine Coast Motorcycle Race process out of control Contributed by the Peaceful Roads Sunshine Coast Residents of the Sunshine Coast hinterland have expressed their increasing anger at both the proposal and the decision making process for a ‘Sunshine Coast TT Motorcycle Race’ on closedoff public roads. This follows abuse directed at local residents and businesses who oppose the race, who were described as ‘screwball rabid’ by the social media site of the Sydney based race promoter last week. Sunshine Coast Councillor Jason O’Pray has said that the organiser ‘hadn’t followed the proper process of having his plan assessed by the major events board and council before releasing it to the community.’ ‘This feels increasingly like a Keystone Cops scenario. It’s out of control. There’s a council process that’s not following its own rules. There’s harassment of local people and businesses who reasonably oppose having this dangerous and disruptive event. On the ground, locals are feeling increasingly harassed. ‘The decision making process on this event has been unclear and strange from the start. We’ve had two poorly publicised public meetings put on by the council and the promoter. We can find no written material with full details of what is proposed,’ said Dr Traill. ‘Last week the promoter’s social media site said local opponents of the race were ‘screwball rabid’ and asked race supporters to ‘Let ‘em know what you think’. Predictably, some supporters of the race from around Australia are now using social media to abuse local people and businesses who oppose the race*. Also predictably some riders are speeding around the proposed race track – our local roads.’

Promoter is the main winner

I feel those living outside Maleny, cannot appreciate the issues associated with the proposed TT event. The huge negative impact to thousands of people living along the proposed route plus the residents of Maleny e.g. noise, impact on property values, and being locked into their properties for four days, is something that needs to be seriously understood. Disruption to traffic will occur weeks before and after the event, with erection and removal of barriers. Whilst I don’t live along the proposed race track route, I can believe real estate sources that owner’s property values on the route will be negatively affected. Business finance made simple.

‘Local business people along the route have been left to scratch their heads as to whether they’d be able to keep their doors open during a race. The many thousands of locals who live in the district don’t know whether they’d be able to commute to work while the race is on.’ ‘But our elected councillors are unfortunately ducking discussing this with local people and businesses - so far referring enquiries to an unelected council staff person. For consultation the council seems to be focusing on an informal online poll, open to anyone in the world. But the poll’s being conducted with just a short page of information being provided on what the event actually is.’ ‘As Councillor O’Pray has pointed out, event organisers are prohibited from publicly promoting an event until it receives approval. That’s the rules laid down by council. However, the promoter is not only actively marketing the motor-cycle race on our roads, he has attacked locals who oppose it.’ ‘The whole process for this proposed event is increasingly unclear and increasingly abusive’. ‘We call on our elected councillors on the Sunshine Coast to intervene and call this race off. Now. The promoter has admitted a similar event was rejected by New South Wales authorities. We need to reject it here as well. It’s a dangerous event that we believe would inevitably cause deaths and injuries. It would be highly disruptive for thousands of local people, dozens of local businesses and the district as a whole’. *Peaceful Roads Sunshine Coast, a Hinterland community group of local residents and businesses who oppose the race.

I, like many other people, moved to Maleny specifically because of its quiet beauty. Our local business, particularly the tourist industry, attract tourists all year round, for this very reason. The unacceptable idea that those living along the route need to plan to leave their homes for four days because of an unwanted, unacceptable racing event, is a most selfish assumption. Why should thousands of individual residents of Maleny be seriously financially impacted by an event, that they could not have been foreseen, when they bought their properties? Short term gain not worth it

I am writing to voice my concern about the proposed TT Motorcycle Race on the Bald Knob Road / Kilcoy Road / Stanley River Road / Mountain View Road circuit. My very strong feeling is that this proposal is inconsistent with the current and promoted values of the MalenyPeachester-Booroobin areas, of peace and quiet, rural and natural values, and artistic endeavour. Clearly there is a major disjunct between the values of motorcycle race organisers, participants and the audience, and the permanent residents and regular visitors of this locale. The values that the course for a TT Motorcycle race are selected on are largely quite different to those that we recognise in our beautiful quiet corner of the world. The scenery and landscape values are selected primarily for tight windy roads, dangerous slopes and corners, and spectator / media vantage point. Infrastructure and service requirements are based on throughput, not quality of experience - and often, for logistical reasons, these are provided at locations some distance from the event location. Organisers and attendees usually have little or no interest in the local people (with the exception, of course, of meeting their own immediate needs) or their local way of life and cultural values - their primary interest is the nature and condition of 'the course', and in engaging with other likeminded (i.e. motorcycle racing) people. And I do not begrudge them this - but I'm afraid, not at my expense, not at the expense of all of my friends and neighbours, and not at the expense of our lovely quiet little backwater. I am certain that other more appropriate locations could be found in other less populous but comparably beautiful areas. It is arguable as to whether an event such as this would give our area a cash-flow injection or not. Certainly the area immediately affected by the race will. In short, I believe that we would be fools to squander our incredible natural asset for a short term possible gain, and, to the loss of a long term social, cultural, aesthetic, environmental and economic benefit. Michele Deveze Peachester

Caloundra Road traffic

I would like to make a suggestion on how to not actually fix this problem but at least alleviate it a little. It seems to me that most people head into Caloundra and then turn left up the Nicklin Way. How hard would it be for the TMR to signpost the roundabout on Caloundra Road at Corbould Park to say that the Kawana Way Link Road will actually take you to the Nicklin Way from Bokarina north to Kawana Waters? Surely at least tourists may see this as an advantage rather than heading all the way into Caloundra! On another note to the TMR, now that you have taken out all the passing between Landsborough and Mooloolah Valley on the Steve Irwin Way can more 100kph signs be put in to remind motorists that the speed limit is 100kph!? Everyone just does 80kph and they wonder why they are being tailgated now that you can’t overtake (or at least erect bigger 100kph signs at either end). Paul Simpson Glass House Mountains

Kilcoy-Beerwah Road intersection

Over the years I have been contacted by residents wanting to see changes and improvements made to the intersection of Kilcoy Beerwah Road and Old Gympie Road in Beerwah – the intersection near the Beerwah State School. Both my colleague Mark McArdle and I have lobbied the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) seeking financial commitments to upgrade this intersection but to no avail so far. TMR have told us they do not consider this intersection as having a high enough priority for an upgrade and that funding would therefore be a long way off. I realise with the continued growth in this region, especially with the new housing estate and many new homes under construction, the community, like me, wants to make sure we prevent any unnecessary accidents. I am well aware that at school drop off and pick up times, in particular, this is a very busy area and concerns for the safety of children who cross the road are very high. I am committed to doing what I can to deliver improvements – whether that be traffic signals or another measure that TMR determine will assist. However, as we saw with the traffic signals at the Reed Street intersection in Glass House, I can’t do this without the support of the community. We need to be able to show TMR that our community want to see changes made as soon as possible and to do this I need you to stand with me. I am keen to sponsor a petition and will walk the streets myself, knocking on doors and gathering as many signatures as I can. As a starting point, I need a member of the community to put their hand up to be the petitioner – this is a very simple job, all it requires is your full name and address and perhaps some help in collecting signatures. If you would like to volunteer to be involved with this community campaign, please email my office on glass.house@ parliament.qld.gov.au or call 5435 2013.

Funding for community groups

Congratulations to the four local community groups who have put in the effort and been successful in receiving combined funds of just over $120,000 in Round 88 of the ‘Gambling Community Benefit Fund’ • Glasshouse District Cricket Club to replace practice nets • Wamuran Historical and Visitor Centre to upgrade the facility • Woodford Show Society to purchase a tractor • Maleny Arts & Crafts Group to purchase a kiln and upgrade facility

Mark your diaries must-do local events

The countdown is on for MooFest 2016. Following a highly successful launch last year, the event is back again on September 10 from 11.00am to 5.30pm at Mooloolah Rec Grounds providing a gold coin donation entry familyfriendly fun day out with wholesome live music and kid’s activities. In the meantime, be sure to check out all the action at the Mooloolah Rodeo, at the Mooloolah Rec Grounds on August 19. The earlier scheduled time in June had to be cancelled due to bad weather. As well as the main event – Honky Tonk Bull Riding from 6.30pm – there will be live music by X-Factor contestant Judah Kelly along with local talent The Chontia Trio. Come along and support the Mooloolah State School with much needed fundraising. And then there’s the Hinterland Finance and Sustainability Expo over at the Maleny Showgrounds on July 23 from 9.00am to 3.00pm, which I am proudly supporting through the division 5 discretionary funds. This free one day event brings together a number of financial and environmental experts to share their knowledge and inspire visitors to take action to improve their personal, family and business situations and contribute to making a more sustainable community. Visit the Maleny Chamber of Commerce website for further details.

Children's Skate Bowl

I’m pleased to advise a recent visit to the Minister’s office regarding the children’s skate bowl proposed on the QR land at the entrance to the Mooloolah Recreation Reserve was very positive. We were able to sit down and address any misunderstandings face-to-face. I’m informed representatives from the Minister’s office are planning a trip to the area to further inspect the site. As always, I will endeavour to keep you up-to-date with any new developments.

Keeping Mooloolah safe

I have been in Mooloolah with council officers looking at potential safety issues. One area where a pedestrian crossing is being considered is between the IGA and Kenny’s Café on Jones Street. Before works can begin, council will arrange for traffic counters to be laid at the intersection and then public consultation with community and businesses in the vicinity. To increase safety, there may be some loss of carparks in this street.

Mooloolah councillor catch up

Don’t forget the Mooloolah Breakfast Meeting will be back on schedule next month. See you on August 4 at Kenny’s Café at 7.00am for a 7.30am start. Contact Mooloolah Community Centre, Darryl from Mooloolah Hardware or my office on 5441 8043 or email me for further information.

Things To Do Spear plays for Naidoc

Easy cheesemaking sessions for food lovers

NAIDOC Week celebrated by the Maleny Film Society’s screening of the dance drama spectacular ‘Spear’, from the Bangarra Dance Theatre, in a 3.00pm matinee on Saturday, July 16 at Maleny Community Centre. This highly innovative film of a wordless story in dance, is set against amazing Australian landscapes as diverse as the emotions depicted by the dancers. Stephen Page, artistic director of the Bangarra Dance Theatre, directs this film with actor dancers, including Aaron Pedersen (Suicide Man) and Page’s son Hunter Page-Lockhard as Djali, the young Aboriginal man seeking his own destiny in a confusion of cultures within a modern world. Audiences will recognise him from the TV series Cleverman. Prior to ‘Spear’, audiences will be treated to a short film ‘Karroyul’, a 15-minute story about an indigenous girl, that was shown at the 2015 Heart of Gold International Film Festival. In the evening at 7.15pm (dinner from 6.00pm), the patrons will be transported to the rock-strewn snowfields of Iceland with ‘Rams’. This drama involves two warring neighbour brothers Gummi and Kiddi, who face extermination of their precious sheep during an outbreak of ‘scrapie’. Long estranged by conflicts of personality and prejudice, the grizzled bachelor farmers are forced to reconsider their relationship. The threat of an Icelandic snowstorm and the organisation of the Icelandic community within its geographical challenges, the machinery, the heavily coated sheep, the intricately patterned woollen clothing… all are exotic extras to a sturdy drama of loyalty and tough love. Members of the Film Society may pre-book for themselves on-line or for themselves and friends at the Maleny Information Centre. Non-member tickets can be purchased at the door for $13.00. Check the website for further information: www.malenyfilmsociety.info

Annie McIntosh’s exhibition is currently underway at The Garden Haus, at The Garden Café, Maleny until July 31. The exhibition is open seven days a week and the artist will be present at select times (phone 5499 9928 for more details). Annie is a relatively new artist, living on a farm outside Peachester, having withdrawn from busy city life to paint. She celebrates the diversity of our landscape, from barren inland desert to coastland. The images are drawn from memories of travels around our country, yet combine reality with fantasy. Collage, printing, acrylic paint and inks are used in an annihilate / replace method of working to delve deeper into the strata of landscape. She is preoccupied with the effect of colour and mark making on mood, inviting the viewer to experience the emotional response along with her.

From the churches Scott Kroeger - Maleny Presbyterian Church Ok, the federal election did not go my way. They seldom do. The flaws of politicians make determining a good government very difficult at times. Yet, we are to submit to the process not only as good citizens, but because God also says so, through his word: Romans 13:1–5 NIV11 'Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY

What this means is that we have to accept the outcome of the federal election as of a sovereign God who ordains all things that come to pass. To that end, we are also enjoined to pray for our politicians: 1 Timothy 2:1–3 NIV11 'I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people - for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Saviour.' You may have hoped for a different electoral outcome as I did, but we must be satisfied that God actually knows what He is doing. With views over farmland and out to the mountains, easy access to the Bruce Highway overpass with access to North and South and only minutes to town, make this property one to inspect.

In the Garden with Brownie

Jobs for the yard in July

• Prune passionfruit vines of unwanted growth, mulch and water well. Prune the vine by cutting all laterals (shoots coming from the main stem) back to two buds. • Top up the mulch around fruit trees. Clean out your compost bin, spread the contents under your fruit trees, and start another. • Feed your citrus trees. Use 125g of citrus tree fertiliser per year of age of the tree up to 1.25kg. You need to do this three times a year – July, November and February. • Lift Dahlia tubers and store in sawdust. Break up clumps of day lily, chives or shallots and replant new plants. • Time to plant bagged roses and if you need to, move existing rose bushes to another spot in the garden. • Carry out heavy construction jobs (paving, pergolas, walls and steps) while it is cool. • Treat your lawn for bindii as soon as it appears. Any of the broadleaf lawn herbicides, such as ‘bindii and clover killer’ will do. • Pruning acalyphas now will ensure that they have great flushes of new colourful foliage next spring. • Keep the high nitrogen fertiliser up to your cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli plants, as they need it to grow strong and large.

Vegetables

Plant asparagus, broad bean, peas, beans, parsnip, rhubarb, english spinach, silver beet, zucchini, potatoes, carrot, kohl rabi, lettuce, radish, spring onion, turnip, beetroot, broccoli, cabbage, capsicum, celery, garlic, leeks, swede, sweet potato and tomato.

Flowers

Plant ageratum, amaranthus, aster, bedding begonia, boronia, candytuft, carnation, cleome, cornflower, dahlia, dianthus, everlasting daisy, gaillardia, impatiens, nigella, californian poppy, rudbeckia, snapgragon, statice, alyssum, marigold, petunia, celosia, aurora daisy, chrysanthemum, coleus, gazania, gerbera, gloxinia, moluccella, larkspur, linaria, nasturtium, strawflower, swan river daisy, verbena, kangaroo paw, cosmos, gomphrena, phlox, portulaca, salvia, sunflower and zinnia.

Lots of lemon!

Sue from Glass House dropped by our office with this mega lemon, grown by her sisterin-law at Landsborough. She thought we’d be interested … I certainly was – it measures 16cm long and weighs 744 grams. That’s a lot of lemon drop martinis. Does anyone know if it’s a special type of lemon? Sport Community Cricket Day in Peachester Contributed by Sally Joyce Strong communities grow strong children and as the parents of the next generation of ‘Peachesterites’, we would like to create opportunities for our community to gather through sport and recreational activities. To show our enthusiasm for community recreation, Peachester State School P&C is hosting a Family Cricket Day on July 24 at the Peachester State School Cricket Oval. If you would like to show your support, then please join in the fun on Sunday, July 24. A full day of family friendly cricket activities is planned. Queensland Cricket, are enthusiastically supporting the day and will be running Milo Cricket activities for kids and parents with a special guest appearance from Brisbane Heat’s mascot – ‘Heater’! Maleny Bowls Club

Contributed by Ian Hansen The inclement weather prevented any play Tuesday but Wednesday’s Twilight Challenge was once again well supported. The winning teams were:Apps Kingdom, The Cookies (by forfeit), Handles, Easy Riders, Tutors and Mighty 10. There were a couple of surprise results, one of which was the Tutors gave great joy to the Team members. The Touchers went to Jackie Montgomery, Harold Hopper and Steve Ellett. I didn’t get the individual winners but the Money Board Winners were Bruce Rankine and Harold Hopper which finished off a good night for him. On Friday, six rinks of Scroungers were played and the respective winners were - Miles Allen, Rob Norris, David Austin, Tom Ukkola, Jim King and Margaret Ginns. Some of these players’ names seem to occur on a fairly regular basis so the Handicapper must be kept busy adjusting their handicaps. For the Sponsors’ Prizes, the Petersens, Faye and Curley, both had wins with Faye winning the Sukhothai Restaurant prize and Curly the Colin James prize. Monica Sherwood won the Day Lilly prize. Jim King capped off a good weekend by winning both the Money Board and the raffle. Saturday afternoon two matches in the Mixed Pairs and one in the Men’s Pairs were played. Firstly, congratulations to all the winners and commiserations to the losers. In the first Mixed Pairs, the more experienced Pair of Ray and Lucy Oldfield defeated new Members, Heather and Tony Snel 23 shots to 14. The other match was tied at 18 apiece after the required 21 ends, so an extra end had to be played to determine the winners. In this, Graeme Glover and Margaret Ginns scored a single shot to run out winners over David and Jane Burges, 19 shots to 18 in what was a most exciting match. The surprise result was in the Men’s Pairs when defending Champions and winners of four of the last five Championships, Curly Petersen and Ian Hansen, were defeated by Jim King and Don Ginns. They are now left to concentrate on their Semi-final Matches in both the Men’s Open Singles and Triples. This week there was jackpot Pairs/ Triples Tuesday, Scroungers Friday and there will be Championship Matches both during the week and on Saturday. Note, the Twilight Challenge isn’t on Wednesday because of the clash with the last match of the State of Origin Rugby League Series.

The winning team this year at the senior carnival was Bluegum, while Mellum house took out the top spot at the junior carnival. Senior place-getters will now compete at the District Athletics Carnival to be held at Skippy Park on July 28 and 29.

R/ Up were John McSwain and Rob Scullion with + 16 margin in the second game. Prize money was drawn from a hat with Chris Dougan, Ron Rix, Jenny Morris, John McSwain, Jonathan Orr and Bob Bloomer all taking home $20.00 each. Round 2 of our pennant season was played last weekend, 2nd Division beat Caboolture Lakes at home by 6 shots. Their next game is away to Solander Lakes, 5th division had a win away against Bribie Island by 24. Their next game is at home to Beachmere. If you're free, come down to show your support. Great start to the year. Well done to everyone. As of October 1, next year’s bowls memberships will be can be paid. At a current board meeting, Club Glasshouse have decided to increase the bowls yearly membership fee from $80.00 to $85.00. Please remember our club makes no money from this with Bowls Queensland taking the majority and are every year increasing their fees. Our Annual General meeting will be held on September 3. We need more members to start helping out on our board. We have the bowlers, but without a board there is no club. If you can offer any assistance or have any office skills or spare time we would like to hear from you. We also need more umpires. If you think you may be interested, please approach the board for more details. On Sunday, August 7 our club is hosting the next Police Bowls Day, the Iona Challenge. This day is sponsored by Terry and Liz Little and there will be up to $400.00 in prizes. I encourage all members to come along for a game. The cost is only $12.00 and includes hot nibbles after the game. Put your name on the sheet in our bowls shed office. Be at our club by 12.30pm for a 1.00pm start. Hope to see you all there. Our Mixed Fours Spring Carnival will he held Saturday, October 15 and Sunday, October 16. Nomination forms are available at our bowls office, cost is $55.00 per person and includes green fees and lunch for both days. Should be a great weekend! Four teams are down already. Also don’t forget bowls coaching every Sunday morning from 10.30am to 12.00noon. Even if you want to come down just for fun and have a roll. Both children and adults of all abilities are welcome. www.gcnews.com.au

Round 3 in the competition will close at 4.00pm on Friday, July 15. You can bring entries in to Coochin Creek Co-op at any time during the week, but no later than 4.00pm Friday. Ask for Heather, and she will weigh, record and photograph your entry. The Super Strawberry competition runs for eight weeks leading up to the Beerwah Charity Sports & Spring Carnival (annual fund-raiser for Cancer Council Qld), and the 2016 Champions – the heaviest and the most unusual entries – will be announced on Sports day.

Super Strawberry Report Round 2 of the 2016 Super Strawberry Competition, saw a major increase in entry size, but still not in numbers. However this week’s winning entry weighed a very creditable 115 grams, so congratulations to Di West and Jody Ciantar from Suncoast Harvest who have won the weekly prize of a six-pack from Beerwah Hotel. Regarding the new category of most unusual strawberry, unfortunately this week there is no news – we have it on good authority that the Suncoast Harvest winning entry “looked like a strawberry.”

Just for Laughs Iris aged 67

'I feel like my body has gotten totally out of shape, so I got my doctor's permission to join a fitness club and start exercising. I decided to take an aerobics class for pensioners. I bent, twisted, gyrated, jumped up and down, and perspired for an hour. But, by the time I got my leotard on, the class was over.'

No fish under the ice

Mrs Baker wanted to go ice fishing. She had read several books on the subject, and finally, after getting all the necessary equipment together, she made her way out onto the ice. After positioning her comfy stool, she started to make a circular cut in the ice.

Frighteningly, from up above, a voice boomed, "there are no fish under the ice." Startled, Mrs Baker moved further down the ice, poured herself a large coffee, and began to cut yet another hole. Again, from the heavens, the voice bellowed, "there are no fish under the ice." Mrs Baker, now became very concerned so she moved way down to the opposite end of the ice, set up her stool, and began again to cut her ice-hole. The voice rang out once more, "there are no fish under the ice." Mrs Baker, stopped, looked upwards and asked, is that you, Lord?" The voice replied, "no, this is the Ice-Rink Manager." Week beginning 13/07/2016 CANCER June 22 – July 22 Think about how you present yourself in your personal image. Have you bought some new fashionable clothes, had a fresh haircut, weeded the garden or washed the car? On all levels, inner and outer, everything cleaned up makes you feel healthier and better about yourself. Avoid those who may wish to bully or boss you. LEO July 23 – August 22 There may be some rough edges around your family dynamics this week, so it will not be the time to push against unprevailing winds. There is a lot of messing around going on in interactions and communications. With Mercury and Venus in Leo now, you are in the spotlight and being a sunny sign, natural energies are revitalised. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 Be prepared for the unexpected, but as you are clever at back up plans, snap decisions and alterations can occur frequently under your mental abilities. The weekend will see unforeseen circumstances that arise suddenly necessitating a change in plans or directions. Keep looking positive as a silver lining will appear shortly. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 With Venus and Mercury entering creative Leo this does everything to make you more charmingly popular. Others will admire you and there will be conversations on how to make a more glamorous image or a fashion re-do. The weekend sees people wanting to cooperate and so there should be lunchtime delights now.

SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 With Venus in Leo for the next three weeks, as well as Mercury, it would be a good idea to pay more attention to the social aspects of your job if you want to get ahead. This means you must present yourself in the best fashion and certainly take care of your hair and appearance. Prevailing financial trends are fortunate. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 It would be a good idea to ask your higher consciousness to take care of your feet and legs, so you must watch your step. Impulse moves may find you treading on a slippery concrete corner and that won’t help your hips or muscles. Things should move better over the weekend and there is a change of pace with loving affections. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 Even your sign might find that with Mercury and Venus entering Leo, that it would certainly give you a chance to splurge, no doubt this will be as a result of domestic problems, perhaps renovations and repairs become immediately necessary. The weekend should see smooth running events as with words of love and romance. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 With Venus and Mercury, entering the luxury Leo sign, the next two or three weeks is important with your partner as you share creative ideas. Some old friends might still be a bit dramatic; however your effort at smoothing emotions will be rewarded. The weekend has hearty agreements and charming companionship for you.

PISCES February 20 – March 20 You are certainly motivated by the planets Mercury and Venus moving into you sector of pleasurable pursuits and hobbies. Your organisational skills will shine and one or two social activities might see a highlight in your life, steady your pace over the weekend as some surprises are in store for you in the morning, setting up for lively fun. ARIES March 21 – April 20 This week Mercury the planet of communication, opens your heart to a loving, creative expression. What you sense brewing over the last few days might explode in a burst of energy with everyone in a push pull factor of trying to figure out who is going to be the boss. Those passions amplify over the weekend. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 Be alert to improving your understanding with people who can support you. There is a chance of squandering your financial, or emotional, resources, and not coming out ahead. Better if you could put aside preconceived notions and carefully prepared plans in favour of taking a more spontaneous approach regarding changes. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 With Mercury once again entering the sign of Leo, you will shine as the neighbourhood ambassador, or even be a blessing to your brothers and sisters. Enjoy any local creative affairs, sausage sizzles or community events, and especially bus trips! Wait until after the weekend for better financial conditions. Enjoy life’s pleasures.
