hen I was at high school and University I studied drama, I know saying that sounds like I fancy myself as an actor (which is far from the truth), but I have to say I really enjoyed it, and I could pass it without too much effort. So on Saturday night when we went along to the Maleny Players to see ‘More than a Little Black Dress’ I was reminded of just what fun live theatre can be for the performers, and more importantly the audience. With one of GC&M News team members performing in the play – it was a great opportunity to see Megan in a totally different role, and to see her sharing her enthusiasm for being on stage with the rest of us. Well it wasn’t just Megan but the whole cast that clearly enjoyed themselves and put in so much effort for the audiences' entertainment. Thanks and I am looking forward to the next show. Regards,

Maleny Neighbourhood Centre (MNC) is the central agency for Maleny’s Say No to Domestic Violence Campaign running from Monday this week (Monday, May 11) coinciding with the National Say No to DV month. A focus group has been meeting weekly at the MCN to plan a community campaign, with last week’s meeting finalising the elements of the march and commemorative service to be held on Thursday. This is the second year that Maleny has held a street march. People will be gathering in Tesch Park at Maleny’s Roundabout at 11.30pm on Thursday, May 14 in preparation for the walk at 12.00noon to the Neighbourhood Centre with banners, singing and the creation of a powerful art installation. Marchers on the day are invited back to the Maleny Community Centre for a free community lunch (donations will be welcome) and commemorative service to the 32 people who have so far lost their lives to domestic and family violence this year. Main Roads visits Glenview forest Last week the Department of Transport and Main Roads Director General, along with Regional and District Directors and two other senior Main Roads staff, met with delegates from Save Steve Irwin Way Forest group to visit the Glenview forest and discover just why the iconic forest is so important to so very many people.

Save Steve Irwin Way Forest delegates, Ross Smith and Lisa Malcolm, with Neil Scales (TMR Director General), Amanda Yeates (TMR Regional Director) and Sharon Beattie (TMR Senior Stakeholder Engagement Consultant)

The group – along with many concerned locals and the Sunshine Coast Environment Council – have been continually advocating for changes to the proposed new Steve Irwin Way – Bruce Highway interchange to protect over 24 hectares of precious forest. The Director General and staff heard from the Save Steve Irwin Way Forest group members of the significant historical heritage values of Jowarra Park, Mooloolah Cemetery and Daisy's Place, and of the Steve Irwin memorial. They heard of the incredible cultural and ecological values of the forest, of the many threatened species and of the critically endangered lowland subtropical rainforest. They also heard of the valued businesses that would likely close were the plan to go ahead in its current format. “Responsible and good governance is a government that listens to the people it represents,” local Alan Parsons said. “So after two years of petitions, campaigns and various community events, it's certainly a step in the right direction that the new Main Roads Minister has heard the voices of the thousands

of people in our community that have called for a change to the interchange design and had key people from the Department come in and listen to the issues involved,” he said. Lisa Malcolm, an environmental scientist and local resident outraged by the Main Roads road plans, highlighted the battles that they’ve had. “Under the South East Qld Regional Forest Agreements that were scrapped by the Newman Government this forest was tagged to be transitioned to National Park,” she said. “It's been a long hard fight for the people of this community … fighting off the previous Government's plan to turn the iconic forest into a motor sports complex and the continuing campaign to change the interchange. “We'd like to see this forest returned to becoming National Park, that way we know it'll be protected well into the future,” she said. For more information on their campaign see their website http://iconicforest.wix.com

Over 6,600 say no Last Wednesday, the Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle tabled a petition in Parliament to stop the proposed plans for the removal of direct access to the Aussie World commercial precinct, currently being proposed by the Department of Transport and Main Roads. The issue was highlighted in GC&M News February 18 edition where Steve Amos (owner of Aussie World Garage) expressed his outrage at the plans to close off the direct highway access for his and other Aussie World businesses. “The proposed closure of the on and off ramps is unacceptable,” he said. “The local independent businesses here were developed and grown with the knowledge that the passing highway traffic has direct access into and out of the area. “Closing off our on and off ramps will reduce our trade and mean that we can’t discount our fuel as much. Who loses out? Local residents, tradies and businesses that we support,” he said. Mr Amos had the petition at the Aussie World Garage, and amassed over 6,600 signatures before presenting it to Mr McArdle. “I have written to the Minister for Main Roads, Mark Bailey and asked that the current plans for the Bruce Highway Upgrade project be reconsidered urgently,” added Mr McArdle. “The current proposal will see access to the Aussie World complex by way of a small roundabout, which in itself is problematic. The smaller roundabout located to the west of the interchange means people will need to drive south away from Aussie World and use the roundabout to travel north to Aussie World. There will no longer be a direct route for motorists,” he said. “I have 6,603 signatures on this petition. People are very angry that the direct access is being removed from Aussie World and the implications on the businesses there will be devastating. “These businesses rely heavily on direct highway access for their customers,” Mr McArdle said." “As I have said before, this is simply a very bad decision that needs to be reversed and reconsidered." The Minister for Main Roads has 28 days to respond to the petition.

Upgrade to Bowen Road at Glass House Main Roads and Road Safety Minister Mark Bailey has announced that an upgrade is planned for the intersection of Steve Irwin Way and Bowen Road, where new traffic lights will be installed. This is one of 54 new projects being undertaken across the state as part of the Safer Roads Sooner Program planned to be carried out within the next two years. Back in April 2013, the intersection was the scene of a tragic accident, which resulted in two elderly Beerwah residents losing their lives. Consequently, some in the local community highlighted the dangers of the road junction through GC&M News, calling for a permanent solution. One reader said … "enough is enough. I am a Bowen Road resident and can talk from experience. I’ve been T-boned there, along with a lot of others. This is becoming too regular." Local State Member for Glass House Andrew Powell welcomes the announcement, saying that it is a double win for the Glasshouse Mountains community. "Safer Roads Sooner is a separate funding program that focuses on improving 'black spots' around the state, particularly those where there have been fatalities," he said. "There is no question the Bowen Road intersection has met the criteria for some time and it's wonderful to know the upgrades will deliver a huge safety outcome for locals. "Many Glass House Mountains residents have shared with me their frustration when the Bruce Highway is closed or busy – the extra traffic on Steve Irwin Way makes it impossible to get home, to school, to work or even to the local shop. Those days will be gone with these safe, signalised intersections," he said. GC&M News has contacted the Minister’s office to confirm when the work would commence. A spokesperson for the Minister said that the Reed Street work is currently in planning, and once completed, timing of the Bowen Road project will be determined.

Let’s talk market values … The question on everyone’s lips when selling a property is “What will we get for it?” The simple answer is … only what a buyer is willing to pay. But let’s go a bit deeper. There’s no stock standard scientific formula with real estate because you are dealing with people, emotions and personal situations. But the people who have the last say are the banks. Sure you could snag yourself a cash buyer who absolutely adores the Balinese feature and green walls you’ve painted and they need to move in ASAP because they are homeless in 30 days – dream situation! But the reality is that if a mortgage is attached to the property purchase the banks will do a valuation looking for the nearest comparable sales and squeeze that valuation in as tight as they can, because they need to know if they need to turn around and sell the house the very next day, they will achieve what has been borrowed. So I just wanted to give you some insight, because while every owner is entitled to their wish price, it’s prudent to really look at the market and price it accordingly because there is a very big difference between Being ‘ON’ the market and being ‘IN’ the market. Project home fire alarm warning

Monarch Realty

Following on from our story in GC&M News February 25 edition, Adrian Butler, Chairman of the World Fire Safety Foundation, remains on the case of raising our awareness of the need to move from the existing ionisation smoke alarms, to the safer photoelectric technology. “Ionisation smoke alarms are in most (Queensland) homes. Photoelectric smoke detectors have been mandatory in new commercial buildings since May, 2004,” he said. “Standards Australia has formally acknowledged that the existing Australian Smoke Alarm Standard is flawed,” he added. He said the current Smoke Alarm Standard allowed ionisation alarms to be certified as safe by the CSIRO. However, test data shows they do not activate in the CSIRO’s scientific tests until two to three times the maximum limit set for photoelectric alarms. Photoelectric smoke alarms do exactly what consumers expect them to do they detect visible smoke. “Tragically, ionisation alarms often do not activate in the early, smouldering stage of fatal household fires. In many cases it is not until the fire finally bursts into flame that the ionisation alarm will operate and by then it can be too late for occupants to escape. “The Queensland Fire & Emergency Services brochure, ‘Wake Up To Photoelectric Smoke Alarms’ says ionisation smoke alarms should be replaced,” Adrian said. As part of his investigations, Adrian has found that most home builders on the coast are still installing ionisation alarms.

So he is looking to help Sunshine Coast residents find out what is installed in their homes. “If you have had a home built on the Sunshine Coast in the past 10 years, we’d like to help you find out if your smoke alarms are safe,” said Adrian. “Please fill out a simple form on our website so that we help bring this problem to a head.” The World Fire Safety Foundation’s questionnaire can be found at, www. SmokeAlarmWhistleBlowers.org “The aim of the Foundation is to save lives and this information could be the catalyst for saving hundreds of lives around the world,” he said. “A recent 60 Minutes exposé, ‘The Alarming Truth’, late last year brought the matter to the wider public’s attention.” To see the 60 Minutes story or to help the Foundation by filling out their questionnaire, go to www.SmokeAlarmWhistleBlowers.org

Coolwell is running hot He may be small in stature, but Beerwah’s Dana ‘Deadly’ Coolwell sure packs a mean punch. So mean that he’s been crowned the Australian Junior Champion in the 46kg division at the recent national boxing championships on the Gold Coast. Dana, who is in Year 11 at Beerwah High School, has only been boxing for two years, but in that time he has proven his outstanding natural abilities in the ring. But since his first bout – which was a painstaking five months after he started training under Stephen Pitt at Hinterland Boxing Club – Dana has taken out a number of titles, including 2014 Golden Gloves, 2014 State Champion, 2015 State Champion and now he’s the 2015 Australian Champion. “That first bout was exciting but a bit scary for my mum,” Dana said. “I really enjoy learning the techniques and skills of boxing. I train 11 times a week, which can be tough. But you have to suffer the training to enjoy its outcomes,” he said. Coach Stephen knows that Dana can hold his own. “The kid is a natural,” said Stephen. “His commitment and his attitude are fantastic, he’s never missed one training session in the two years he’s been with the club. “But it’s his boxing talent that really impresses – his ability to read his opponent, having the natural understanding of tactical boxing and planning … those skills don’t come along in all that many sportspeople,” he added.

“Before the Australian Championships, Dana only had 10 bouts under his belt, so to win against a previous two-time Australian champion boxer in the final, who had over 40 fights worth of experience, shows just what a gifted athlete Dana is,” said Stephen. His Australian title means that Dana is selected to go to Russia next year for a shot at becoming World Junior Champion. “My aim is to work hard towards trialling out for the 2018 Commonwealth Games and then representing Australia at 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo,” Dana said.

Maleny gets more NBN information Whether we like it or not, the National Broadband Network (NBN) is coming, in one form or another. And most people agree that a faster, more reliable broadband network is a must if we are to move into the digital age. However, the current plans have created some consternation with regards to actual speed and reliability, community health, and fairness and equity issues. NBN have held consultation meetings in Maleny to explain their plans and listen to community concerns, but as yet have not given the Glasshouse Country region the same courtesy. Most of Maleny and surrounds – and most likely the Glasshouse Country region – will be serviced by the slower fixed wireless microwave service, rather than the faster and more reliable fibre optic cable service that more urban areas will receive. This has concerned some in the community, especially home based business owners who want to ensure that their internet service is reliable and doesn’t put them at a business disadvantage. Others are concerned with the health risks that may be associated with large microwave towers. To progress their plans, NBN have organised a community information session on May 14 from 4.00pm to 7.00pm at the Maleny Community Centre, Maple Street. The session is not a general meeting, but one to give locals the opportunity to discuss the proposals with NBN staff.

Jim Straker from the Towerless NBN for Maleny Hinterlands Group doesn’t think this is good enough, and the group has planned an information meeting of their own. “The Towerless NBN for Maleny Hinterlands Group will be providing its own public information session in the Verandah Room and Kiosk at the same time as NBN is in the main hall,” he said. “The NBN information session is only set up for one-on-one questions, there will be no open forum for public questions. “The Towerless NBN display will have information displays, a copy of a previous NBN Development Application, suggested avenues for objection, and copies of the Council Planning Scheme,” he added. If you live in or around the Maleny and Glasshouse Country regions, and are unsure what is being planned for your future access to broadband, it may pay you to head up to Maleny on Thursday, May 14 from 4.00pm to 7.00pm. You could firstly check out what the Towerless NBN group have to say, arm yourself with some information, then put your questions and concerns to the NBN staff at their information session in the main hall. On track for a big event Glasshouse Christian College’s Open Day is so big this year that it has provided train rides to take visitors around the campus. The petting zoo is back as well as some animals from the College’s very own Agricultural Science farm. The giant jumping castle, bubble machine and morning tea are also free and sure to be a hit with visitors. Anyone who has driven along Roberts Road in the last six months couldn’t help but notice the building activity. The brand new Year 1 buildings are now complete and open for inspection. These state-of-the-art learning spaces are equipped with the latest technology, innovative education areas and beautiful views out of huge windows. Construction of the Year 2 classrooms will begin within six months. Although the modern classrooms look pretty snazzy, the most popular addition with parents is the new car park. Since its addition, the daily drop off and pick up has gone from stressful to

stress free. There is also an extra long drop off zone which makes the whole process seamless and safe. This year’s Open Day will have more student demonstrations, performances and tours. These take place in the theatre, outside the library and in many of the classrooms. A full program of events is on Glasshouse Christian College’s website, www.glasshouse.qld.edu.au. As well as complementary refreshments from the hospitality department, the tuckshop is open for business, the P and F are doing a $2.00 sausage sizzle and you can purchase a freshly made wood-fired pizza. Once again Open Day will be held on a Saturday, May 16 between 10.00am to 2.00pm which allows working families to visit the school at a time that suits them. All the College staff will be present on the day and this is typical of the dedication staff brings to educating the students at GCC.

Glasshouse Christian College is still one of the most affordable Christian schools on the Sunshine Coast. Come to Open Day this Saturday between 10.00am and 2.00pm to find out more.

Hamish's music tour in China By Sonia Clark

Local Peachester teenager Hamish White recently returned from a 10 day music youth exchange tour to Xiamen, China. The music exchange happens every two years as part of an ongoing cultural awareness program that nurtures ties between the Sunshine Coast and its ‘sister city’ Xiamen. Developed through the Sunshine Coast Sister Cities Association, the tour ran from April 11 until April 20 with Hamish, a student at Glasshouse Christian College, one of 17 secondary students selected to attend. Students with demonstratable musical ability from 10 different Sunshine Coast Schools were invited to participate, and Hamish was the only student selected from a local Hinterland school. Along with the students, the tour was attended by councillor Jenny McKay, and musical director John James, along with six parent helpers. The selected students were brought together to perform as a band, and played various concerts in Xiamen. Hamish who is 13, played tenor saxophone, which he started learning when he was 10. One of the big highlights of the tour was the chance for the students to be hosted in part by local families. As the host families spoke little or no English it was a wonderful opportunity for the students to really immerse themselves in a different cultural experience. Hamish said the trip was fascinating as their culture is so different compared to ours. “After the trip, I came to realise that we should be very grateful for what we’ve got here in Australia. It was a wonderful experience and I got a lot out of it,” he said. Hamish White with Xiamen students

Wine and cheese tasting night

By Sonia Clark One event that is worth marking in your diary is the annual ‘Wine and Cheese’ tasting night that follows judging of the high calibre Farmhouse Cheese making (and Pesto) competition at the Maleny Show. The event has been a show calendar highlight for the last 10 years, and this year it will be held on Thursday, May 28 at 6.00pm, at the Maleny Show Pavilion. The night will allow the public to sample cheeses from the day’s competition as well as enjoying wines from locally connected wine producer – Riversands Wines. The Cheese Competition features the best of local, commercial and home cheese makers and will be judged by ‘celebrity judges’ Merv MacDonald and Colin Cunningham. The winners will be presented with their prizes at the tasting night which is also a great way to enjoy a preview of the winners before the crowds hit the pavilion in the following days. As well as competition entrants, the evening will also feature tastings from Kenilworth Cheese and a presentation from Colin Cunningham about the various cheeses featured in the exhibition. Local Buffalo producer Mal Thompson will also be on hand to discuss his products and the Maleny Cheese Man – Marcus Bucher may also give a small presentation. The event has been supported by local businesses including the Maleny IGA and promises to be an informative and fun evening. Tickets are $10.00 and will be available for purchase a week before the event from the Maleny Show Office or they can be purchased on the door. For further information please contact Lyn Bromet – Cheese Competition Steward on 5494 3058. www.malenyshowsociety.org.au

Crowd funding for Bhaktapur Recently GC&M News was contacted by Mooloolah local Natasha Odgers, whose sister Jacqui Wright is staying in Nepal. Jacqui and a friend Ucase Prajapati from Bhaktapur are coordinating on-ground earthquake support for Bhaktapur, and Natasha is encouraging the Glasshouse Country and Maleny communities to help support their efforts through a crowd funding website. The ancient city of Bhaktapur is located 14k west of Kathmandu. The city has crumbled and roads are blocked. Many people have died and the land locked city urgently seeks help. Jacqui and Ucase are seeking funds to purchase tents and basic needs, to distribute food, and improve sanitation with their immediate network of friends and family, and their local community in Bhaktapur. Jacqui has said that water has been the biggest problem. "We are trying to clean out wells as we can't get water tanks," she said. “Water proofing is a necessity, as people are sleeping under wet blankets. The rain has come early and everyone is still scared to go to their homes (with the tremors still happening)." Jacqui and Ucase have also set up a Facebook page to help keep everyone updated on what is happening on the ground. To find their page search Earthquake Victim Action Bhaktapur region. To help assist their fundraising efforts please go to www.indiegogo.com/projects/ emergency-earthquake-relief-for-bhaktapurnepal/x/10635080

Raising funds for Nepal Contributed by Diane Hobson The devastating effects of the earthquake in Nepal has left many thousands of people without shelter, food and clothing. Lions clubs through the Australian Lions Foundation and Lions Clubs International Foundation provide much-needed resources to assist when disaster strikes. Lions Clubs in the Zone 12 area which includes the Lions Clubs of Caloundra, Beerwah, Maleny Blackall Range, Mooloolah Valley and Lake Currimundi / Kawana are holding a fundraising quilt raffle organised by the Zone Chairman and member of the Maleny Blackall Range Lions Club, Rob Hobson, for the Nepal Disaster. The Queen sized quilt (pictured) was made and kindly donated by Maleny Blackall Range Lions Club President, Helen Johnston. If any businesses or individuals would like to purchase tickets ($2.00 each) to assist the people of Nepal to re-build their lives, please contact Rob on 0418 785 967 or 5499 9704. The raffle will be drawn on Saturday, June 6.

Contributed by Glenys Hiley Fashion & Flowers is the Maleny Hospital Auxiliary’s yearly fundraising event. It is now in its 9th year and this year attracted 190 participants. The day before the morning tea and parade last Thursday, volunteers from the Auxiliary were busy baking and setting up the RSL Hall. When the guests arrive they were greeted by a table stretching the length of the hall full of cakes and pastries and a striking flower arrangement which was later auctioned off. Di Wakeman of Simply Stylish provided the fashions featuring innovative and flattering outfits for all shapes, sizes and ages. Their motto is ‘Styling and Support for Real Women’. Simply Stylish is located at Riverside Centre in Maleny. Anne Malone of Imelda’s on Maple provided the latest in smart and elegant footwear. Maleny is lucky to have a store that stocks women’s (sizes 5-13) and men’s (sizes 7-14) shoes, boots, slippers, orthotics and much more. All the models were ladies from the area and customers of the two stores. This is a fun day out for a lot of women in the community. Tables are booked regularly each year by groups in the community such as the Maleny Garden Club, Church groups, Quilters Club, Bridge Club to name a few. Next year it will be held at the Maleny Show Grounds Pavilion.

Kidney Health Week

One in three Australians over the age of 25 is at increased risk of developing kidney related disease. But it isn’t just adults who are affected by kidney disease. One local who understands this all too well is Kelly Wall. She is organising some local fundraising in memory of her nine-year-old daughter Jess Wall who succumbed to kidney disease. Kelly, and family and friends – with the support of local businesses – are organising a raffle supporting the Kidney Foundation as part of Kidney Health Awareness Week from May 24 - 31. The money raised helps young kidney kids to go on organised camps, social outings and supports adults on dialysis, and helps promote the messages of early detection and prevention. Tickets are available from Beerwah Amcal Chemist, Feed and Fodder Beerwah, Beerwah Jewellers, Jessbow Beauty Studio, Glasshouse Newsagency and Glasshouse Primary School. This year’s Kidney Health Week focuses on introducing Australians to their kidneys, and educating them about the role they play, including their vital function of regulating blood pressure. In support of this, Beerwah Amcal Chemist has free kidney health awareness information and a free blood pressure measuring service. Kelly gives a huge thankyou Beerwah Amcal, Beerwah Jewellers, Beerwah Printers, Beerwah Swimming Pool, Colour Queens in Beerwah, Whisper Images, Wild Maintenance, Jessbow Beauty Studio, Glasshouse Newsagency and more, for their donations of a fantastic range of raffle prizes. Also, Jess’s range of LIVE.LOVE.RIDE t-shirts available from Beerwah Feed and Fodder are $35.00 and a percentage is donated to the Kidney Foundation (no profit is made from the sale of these shirts).

Mother’s Day to the max

Measure of happiness

By Carol Fitton Owner of Bargain Max at Beerwah Village, Mitesh Gohil, got into the community spirit this Mother’s Day by offering a colouring-in competition for primary school aged children in the area, with the prize being an enormous gift hamper for one lucky mum. Mitesh was really pleased with the number of entries received from all the townships across the hinterland, which are still on display in-store. Debbie Robson, a member of the Beerwah Village management team, was happy to be involved in the challenging task of deciding the winner. “It was very interesting looking at the range of skills and ages that entered,” she said “you could see a lot of hard work went into the competition.” And when Mitesh contacted the winner, eight-year-old Glasshouse Christian College student Kaitlin Morris, she was super excited when she heard. Mum Megan said that Kaitlin had put a lot of time and effort into the colouring, and it was such a lovely surprise for Mother’s Day. Kaitlin already had plans in place for Mother’s Day, so this year it will make it extra special. Bargain Max staff Kelsey and Shannon (a Beerwah high student) were happy to assist with the handover of the huge hamper. The one important request from Kaitlin was to make sure she could have her picture back, so she could present it to her mum this Mother’s Day!

A recent Gallup poll revealed that for the third consecutive year, Australia (including the Sunshine Coast), ranked 18th in their level of happiness. Rather than being the ‘lucky’ country, it appears Australia is the ‘sad’ country; it seems that countries who rate more highly have a tendency to focus on the positives in life. Local mental health advocate, Lorraine Enright believes our mental health significantly impacts on our level of happiness, even more than any physical illness. Lorraine Enright However sadly, due to the stigma associated with mental illness, many people don’t like to speak out about it and miss out on important treatment, which in turn limits their capacity to live the life they would like to. “As adults it is important to understand that we have the ability to make changes in our adult life and not to be limited by our emotional experience as children. “When we begin to be accountable for our thoughts, feelings, words and actions we can transform our self-development,” explains Lorraine. The human mind is like a powerful computer having the capability of 50 to 60 thousand thoughts per day. Lorraine believes that without conscious effort, people can be mindlessly living on autopilot and miss many great opportunities or experiences that can impact overall happiness. To help local residents buck the national trend of unhappiness, Lorraine is holding a workshop on May 29 to educate, guide and support locals so they can be more like the ‘happier countries’ and live from a place of self-worth. Lorraine believes that true happiness is not outsourced, it comes from within you, and by attending her workshop you can tap into a deeper level of wisdom and knowledge, learning to allow the stress, fear or anger to pass through you and not overwhelm you. For more information contact Lorraine Enright on 0408 827 116.

Celebrate with Eagle Boys This weekend, Eagle Boys Pizza Beerwah will be celebrating an incredible milestone in local business as they celebrate their 15th year of operation in Beerwah. To mark this very special occasion, Don and Judy, Wendy and Andrew, and Graham and Sue invite all their customers – both new and old – to come along and help them celebrate. From the very beginning Eagle Boys Pizza Beerwah has always been a proudly locally owned and operated business. Opening in May 2000, Judy and Don Fraser purchased the franchise and from the beginning their daughter Wendy and son Graham, along with their respective partners Andrew and Sue, have been hands-on with the business. Over the years even the grandchildren have worked at one stage or another with the business. The family owned store has been fortunate to employ an amazing hardworking, loyal and capable manager; Bill who has been “one of the family for years.”

www.gcnews.com.au

Eagle Boys Pizza Beerwah is also proud to encourage and employ local staff who are an important part of their success. The family are extremely grateful to their amazing customers who have continued to support them. They extend special thanks for the loyalty that was shown by customers during the many months of disruption during the Simpson Street upgrade, which was understandably a tough time for all businesses. Eagle Boys Pizza Beerwah are proud of the products they sell, their friendly customer service and the efficiency of their operation and would like to assure all customers that this high quality of service will definitely continue. The family and staff have made many friends over the years and look forward to these friendships continuing and developing well into the future. On a personal note, the family genuinely love the beautiful Hinterland area and have always been more than happy to be contributing members of

this great community. Prices are kept affordable without affecting the quality of the products, and Eagle Boys Pizza Beerwah is always there to offer support where possible to the various local sporting clubs and charities. Drop in this weekend May 16-17 and enjoy some great birthday specials and treats for the kids.

Contributed by Coral Beutel (Vice President) The Peachester CWA ladies have been busy as usual. On April 2 we had our photographic competition. The results are Coral Beutel and Cath Howitt one first each, Gordon Howitt five firsts and Margaret Wallace three. The cooking resulted in Bev Wild receiving six firsts, Coral Beutel four, Joan Kropp three, Jo Myers two and Cath Howitt one. These winners go onto the divisional finals at Caloundra on May 20. On May 9 the Nambour North Coast Divisional meeting was held at Peachester with our branch providing morning tea for about 40 ladies from all over the Sunshine Coast and Hinterland. The markets on April 18 were a good day financially with our members manning the canteen as well as our stall. A donation was presented to the Peachester State School P & C Association to commemorate ANZAC Day. We have donated over $1,000 so far this year. The May meeting on the first Thursday was very busy with our Mother’s Day lunch arranged at ‘Collectables’ at Peachester. Finalising International, which we are holding with Beerwah CWA on Tuesday, May 29, starts at 9.00am. Our next meeting is on June 4 when the K.C Competition will be judged. Next market is June 27. A big thank you to all who patronised our events as this enables us to donate monies and help to those in need. God Bless.

We are pleased to reveal the real reason Dorry went on holidays to the USA recently. It was of course to accept our Oscars in Hollywood for Best Vet and Best Veterinary Nurse! Thankfully Nurse Kylie was able to hold the fort so to speak while Dorry was away having a fabulous time and a big thank you goes out to our hard working nurse Kylie. In all seriousness we are all now hard back at work clearing the back log of appointments and surgical cases and we are enjoying seeing our great clients and their animals once again. We have had some wild weather lately and certainly hope all our patients remained safe and well during such a down pour. Soon the weather will most likely turn somewhat colder and so aching joints may start to appear in our older patients. If your pet is showing signs of winter discomfort please come in for a chat as you may be surprised what we can offer you to help relieve those aches and pains. We have plenty or remedies, herbs and supplements that are safe and easy to administer that can in many cases assist in maintaining good mobility during the colder winter months.

School News Landsborough Celebrates Under 8s Contributed by Kylie Merola Landsborough State School is hosting an Under Eights Day celebration on Wednesday, May 20 from 9.00am until 10.40am. They are inviting all young children and their families in the local community to join them for a morning of fun filled activities. There will be a jumping castle, face painting, biscuit icing, an animal farm, story time, games, ipads and ipods, arts and crafts plus much more! The day coincides with Under Eights Week 2015 and provides an opportunity for young children to shine, highlighting the rich contribution they make to the community. This year's theme ‘Voices of Children - Look, Listen, Hear and Respond!’ encourages us to explore the many ways children deliver a message, and allow us to show children we are

listening by responding in a meaningful way. It is an opportunity to find ways of representing children's views about their community and the world they live in. Principal Kristy Walton explained how the day is all about the youngsters. "Our school really looks forward to hosting Under Eights Day celebrations each year. Everything is fun when you're under eight. Kids are creative, imaginative and find the joy in everything. It's all about being a kid, enjoying all the good things and bringing everyone together,” she said. The Under Eights Day event is free to attend, however the school would appreciate RSVP's so they have an indication of numbers prior to the day. Please contact Landsborough State School on 5436 2777.

Awareness of Vascular Birthmarks

May 15 is the International Day of Awareness for Vascular Birthmarks. I would like to encourage everyone to visit www.birthmark.org and learn a little about vascular malformations. Before my son was diagnosed with a vascular malformation I thought that birthmarks were a cosmetic issue. Unfortunately birthmarks can be painful, associated with serious health complications and many require repeated treatment in hospital. In the most extreme cases they can be life threatening. The appearance of birthmarks varies hugely between people. Some appear bruise-like and swollen, with parents often verbally abused by members of the public. Awareness is desperately needed! Thank you for taking the time to read this. Love to all the beautiful people out there with vascular malformations. Renee Ross Glass House

Peachester Seniors role modelling Contributed by Andrea Balcombe P&C Being a Learner, Being Respectful and Being Safe are the three rules that underpin the school wide ‘Positive Behaviour Support program’ for students at the school. All year levels have spent the first part of this year focused on achieving bronze level, requiring nine stickers per stage, with a year level appropriate reward for each stage achieved, e.g. class crown for a day. The school's Yellow Tailed Black Cockatoo mascot 'Karrak' is the fun backdrop to the whole program and once the children have filled the three stages of achievement a bronze 'U Karraked IT' wrist band is presented and applauded in front of the entire school at Parade. The program is such a success the whole of senior, Years 5 and 6 were presented bronze wrist bands last parade, having 'Karraked' the first level. They are now in pursuit of silver and gold bands and have to again progress through the three leading stages, achieve 27 stickers through observed acts of being a Learner, being Respectful or being Safe to reach the next band of glory. Well done senior’s and well done to all the younger children who also have achieved or are about to achieve bronze level! www.gcnews.com.au

On Thursday, May 14 in Maleny Community Centre at 4.00pm NBN will hold a public display of their plans for a Microwave Tower to be constructed in or near Storrs Road. This tower will be 30 - 40 metres tall (a 10 story building) featuring antennas that broadcast a microwave signal (at 2.3Ghz - the same as any microwave oven) across the landscape to every home within sight. There has been a lot of opinion on the value / dangers of towers in Glasshouse Country and Maleny News over the last eight months. From the standpoint of residents who prefer another system of broadband delivery, the towers represent an overly expensive solution that won't give you ‘superfast’ broadband but speed that's little different than you already get with ADSL2. At the cost of more than a million dollars per tower (total expanded costs) it seems a waste. The tower plan for Storrs Road has proceeded with virtually no consultation for locals. How many of you even knew it was coming before the NBN adverts a few weeks ago? If you want input you need to attend the May 14 meeting. NBN will put in a Development Application (DA) to the S.C.Council for the tower and you will have just 15 days to lodge an objection if you don't want it there. And the DAs are complex large documents requiring lots of brain time. To object requires a bit of hefty homework. When the tower is complete, experience from many small towns in NSW shows property values drop in its vicinity. As well, Beerwah township residents will get fibre cable broadband which can be up to four times faster than their rural cousins. The Maleny Tower Action Groups will hold an information display with presentations in the Verandah Room in the rear of the Community Centre also from 4.00pm. Visit them to get a fuller perspective on NBN plans. Richard Giles Conondale

Giraffe delivery in Maleny!

While we have to wait until late July for the arrival of Australia Zoo’s new baby giraffe, Fig Tree Medical in Maleny have just taken delivery of a giraffe of their very own! Commissioned by Dr Peter Wynn, this impressive specimen was carved by local chainsaw artist, Matty George over two days at the recent Maleny Wood Expo. This amazing creature standing at well over three metres tall was indeed a challenge for the talented Matty G, who had to strap himself to the taller parts of the structure to carve it out. The tree itself was sourced from fallen timber found in the Maleny region and this was by far Matt’s largest piece to date. The as yet unnamed giraffe stands proud at the entrance to Fig Tree Medical. Dr Wynn and his wife Robyn, opened the practice in February of this year in the painstakingly restored, heritage protected Yurunga House. Dr Wynn has over 40 years experience as a GP and is now offering his services at Maleny. Originally hailing from South Africa, Dr Wynn wanted something to represent his homeland and the idea of a giraffe was born. Dr Wynn is looking for naming suggestions for his newest addition. Drop by Fig Tree Medical and see this gorgeous creature in person at 10 Cedar Street, Maleny. Or feel free to call the practice on 5429 6555 with your name ideas.

Colin Cunningham with owner of Colin James Fine Food in Maleny Norman Scott doing a taste test

Maleny gelato is crowned Australia’s best A ‘stunning’ chocolate Colin James gelato has been crowned Australia’s best at the Royal Queensland Food and Wine Show’s (RQFWS) Ice Cream, Gelato and Sorbet Competition in Brisbane. Colin James Fine Foods’ chocolate gelato beat 160 ice-cream, gelato and sorbet entries to win the Grand Champion of the Show, along with four other champion awards, including the Champion Sorbet (for their Raspberry Sorbet), Champion Vanilla or Chocolate Ice Cream or Gelato (for their Chocolate), Champion Ice Cream or Gelato (for their Chocolate) and Champion Queensland Ice Cream, Gelato or Sorbet (for their Chocolate). They won Gold for their chocolate ice cream/ gelato, strawberry ice cream/gelato, jaffa ice cream/gelato, ruby grapefruit and campari sorbet, and raspberry sorbet. They also won Silver for their vanilla bean ice cream/gelato, pistachio ice cream/gelato, roast almond ice cream/gelato, white chocolate and

raspberry ice cream/gelato, and passionfruit sorbet. RQFWS Chief Judge Russell Smith, who is a dairy connoisseur and international food judge, said the winning chocolate gelato was one of the best he and his fellow judges had tasted anywhere in the world. “It doesn’t get any better than this, it was stunning,” he said. “Contrary to popular belief, it’s very difficult to get a perfect chocolate flavour and at the same time have the silky texture that this gelato exhibited.” The team of 11 national judges, led by Mr Smith, were impressed with the high quality of the 607 exhibits that they tasted over the four days. Colin James products are available at the Maleny and Landsborough IGA’s, as well as Kwerky Café in Beerwah and 7 Secrets Pizza in Glass House Mountains.

“It’s a bit like Central Station here on Monday and Tuesday mornings. Mike and I designed the kitchen as open-plan so that anyone can see all the action for themselves from the shop front area,” she said.

So next time you’re in Beerwah call in and have a chat and a look around … and better still, if you can make it anytime on a Monday morning in May the team will include a free yummy slice of Citrus Burst with any purchase you make.

Meals 4 U When the original owners decided to move on, locals Mike and Dawn took the plunge and purchased Meals4U – this was back in Easter 2009. Dawn remembers those early days … “I’d put the roasts in the oven on a Monday morning, dash out delivering meals, collect veggies from the Matilda on my way back and return just in time to chill and slice the roast meats,” she recalls. Things are a little different today. With a team of 10 staff producing close to 2,000 freshly frozen meals per week, the business has grown steadily over the past six years, based almost entirely on the power of word of mouth. However, things have not always been plain sailing. “Convincing locals that they can call in and buy our meals over the counter has been one of the biggest marketing challenges,” Mike explains. Now though, after a recent revamp the retail area looks and feels just like any other shop, and retail sales are growing at a steady pace week on week. Dawn tells us that keeping up with the regular demand for home delivery, and now new retail sales, is a daily challenge. 22

Beerwah Bowen Therapy

Bursitis Bursae are small fluid filled sacs that prevent friction between bony structures and soft tissue mostly in around joints, such as the shoulder or hip. Bursitis occurs when a bursa becomes irritated and inflamed causing significant pain and restriction of movement. It can be caused by overuse, repetitive movement, injury or constant pressure on a joint. Bowen moves are applied around the joint to increase hydration and circulation, reduce inflammation, break up minor calcification and

lessen scar tissue. This can lead to a reduction in pain and stiffness, an increased range of motion and a reduction in healing time. Bowen Therapy is holistic and treats the entire body as well as the affected joints. It can help break the cycle of pain and improve quality of life. After a treatment, it is important to rest the area and ensure adequate fluid intake. There is no set number of Bowen treatments. Usually bursitis requires a series of treatments with an increase in the time between each. Beerwah Bowen Therapy is by appointment

Living - Arts ‘Simple Interventions’

On show at Vianta

The spectacular beauty of the Sunshine Coast and Hinterland has been masterfully captured by our own local award winning photographer Roz Bannan. This month her first photographic exhibition is on at Vianta Café in Beerwah and features six beautiful photographs of our own local environment. The series includes two intimate photographs of a pair of kangaroos in the lapping waves at close of day; an extraordinary series of weather shots - sunrise, lightening, and clear bright sunshine; and the evocative photograph of an abandoned tyre swing - reminding us all of long hot childhood summer days. Despite being an avowed stormchaser and having a masterful eye for landscape, Roz tells us that although her first love is nature and wildlife photography, she is now branching out to Fine Art and Staged Portrait photography - this exhibition also includes an example of some of that work. The exhibition is on show until May 31 at Vianta Arts, 70 Simpson Street Beerwah. For information about hanging a show at Vianta contact Michele at reddoorart@ bigpond.com.au

Cost is $70.00/day for financial members and $90.00/day for all other attendees. In this workshop you will learn how to create exciting ‘scape’ settings of street / building / water / boats with the inclusion of figures. Introducing the human element will create extra interest and bring the painting to life. The Buderim CWA Hall, is located at the Corner Gloucester and King Street, Buderim. Peachester artist L.M. Noonan has an exhibition entitled ‘Simple Interventions’ currently on show at the Caboolture Regional Art Galley until Saturday, June 20. This evocative exhibition features new works by L.M. Noonan developed with the intention to be ‘authentic’ not original. When creating works for this exhibition, Noonan has challenged our known notions of collage as a picture-making process, instead cleverly creating moments of abstract connection between elements seemingly disparate and dissimilar. The created images are striking, as on first glance they can seem familiar, yet on closer inspection the collage process provokes a sometimes slightly unsettling contemplation as the audience interprets the visual imagery. Audience interpretation will vary with some finding the works provoke a thoughtful response while others an emotional connection. Drawing on her extensive artistic experience, L.M. Noonan delivers a unique voice and strong aesthetic. Noonan uses pre-existing and recognisable imagery to tap into the subconscious, engaging with image fragments in an intuitive process of re-assembly and remix. ‘Simple Interventions’ is an exhibition that challenges the notion of traditional collage and assemblage techniques to instead create moments of abstract connection that are at times uncomfortable and yet strangely familiar. Rather than attaching a fixed meaning to the works, Noonan would rather the audience have the space and time to recognise, interpret and reflect without judgement, allowing them the freedom to evoke their own deeply personal connection to these works.

To coincide with the exhibition, Noonan will also be conducting an artist lead workshop ‘Figments’ (suitable for ages 16+) on Tuesday, May 19 from 10.00am until 2.00pm. Come along and get lost in the moment as participants can create their own paper and card works through an intuitive process of attraction, elimination, focus and serendipity. Noonan will guide the workshop through the process of material selection and the construction of imaginary figments allowing a fresh approach to the tradition of collage. A short floor talk will take place prior to the workshop. Get in quick as bookings are essential and places are limited to 10 participants. The Caboolture Regional Art Gallery is located at 4 Hasking Street, Caboolture right outside the entrance to the Caboolture Library, which is located in the Caboolture Hub – Learning and Business Centre. The Caboolture Hub is a short walk from the Caboolture train and bus station, and directly over the road from the central Caboolture shopping district. The exhibition is free and runs until Saturday, June 20. The Gallery is open Monday to Friday: 9.00am - 4.00pm and Saturday: 9.00am - 3.00pm. Phone 5433 3710.

Division 1 Councillor - Sunshine Coast Council P: 5420 8987 Weather events and local resilience

Across the Sunshine Coast, Division 1 experienced the worst of the recent wild weather. Reports from authorities as well as my personal inspection of the division were backed up by vital information provided by residents on the extent of the impact. The response by emergency services and council staff to quickly prioritise safety concerns was very much appreciated however there are still areas that will need attention and I ask for your patience as we work through the list.

Cruise the Pumicestone Passage

I recently attended the Coastal Forum where we were all reminded of the significance of the amazing Pumicestone Passage and catchment to our environment. It again highlighted the rich diversity of the ecosystems that make it a haven for significant species of fish, dugong, turtles, mammals and migratory birds. Coming up is a great chance for interested community members to join a special council-subsidised two hour cruise of the Passage with expert commentary on May 18 or 25. Cruises will operate in the morning and afternoon on each day and discounted tickets are available at $12.50 per person. Spaces are limited; phone 5492 8280 to book your seat.

Help wage war on weeds

Runaway garden plants are one of the main sources of environmental weeds. If you would like to learn more about the problems weeds are causing in our natural areas, come along to a local ‘weed swap’ event. As a reward for your interest and concern, council will swap one bag of weeds for three native plants for your garden. Local events include Saturday, May 16, 9.00am – 10.00am Sharyn Bonney Bushland Reserve, Sugarbag Road, Little Mountain and Tuesday, May 19, 8.30am - 9.30am Emma Place Park, behind Carolan Way, Beerwah.

Jenny McKay

Division 5 Councillor - Sunshine Coast Council M: 0409 450 726 Cleaning up

You may have noticed council officers hard at work in the hinterland region inspecting roads, clearing debris and repairing potholes following the recent storm event. Please report any road damage to council, so we can prioritise the jobs and get the crews out to repair them – call the Customer Contact Centre on 5475 7272 or email mail@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au

Wild dogs

Council in partnership with Biosecurity Queensland is supporting local area community groups to undertake wild dog control programs across the region, including Bald Knob, Beerburrum, Beerwah, Bells Creek, Crohamhurst, Landsborough, Maleny, Peachester, Reesville and Witta areas until June 5. Landholders have a legislative responsibility to control declared pests on their land and participation in wild dog baiting programs is an effective way to help meet this responsibility. Council officers are also available to assist landowners with education about methods they can take to reduce the impact of wild dogs. Residents are encouraged to report wild dog sightings, incidents or requests by visiting council’s website or calling 5475 7272. Council will then investigate and action as appropriate.

Mooloolah signage

Council is working with Mooloolah Community Association on their request for a new electronic information sign to be installed at Martin Rungert Park including preparing a cost estimate for budget consideration.

Take a cruise along the Pumicestone Passage and see first-hand why the passage and its impressive catchment are so important. The rich diversity of ecosystems within the passage and its catchment make this a haven for significant species of fish, dugong, turtles, mammals and migratory birds. Council is working with the community to protect and enhance the Pumicestone Passage and Catchment as it strives to deliver on its vision to be ‘Australia’s most sustainable region’. Two hour cruises run morning and afternoon on May 18 and 25. Tickets are discounted and cost just $12.50 but spaces are limited - visit council’s website to book. www.gcnews.com.au

Great eats and treats in Maleny!

Cappriccio's It isn’t often that when you go to a restaurant for the first time, that you need to order garlic bread to keep you sustained while you work your way through such a comprehensive menu, but this is what happened to us last week when we had dinner at Cappriccio’s in the Riverside Centre at Maleny. Fortunately we had a friend with us, so we could try out a pizza, pasta and a fish dish,

and the consensus was they all hit the spot. The only problem was we were then too full to try out the dessert menu, so looks like we are heading back for that. I saw one of the waitresses taking out a banana split to another table and it definitely caught my eye. In the photographs below you will see a lovely fresh looking side salad with the pizza, the salad was actually

served with the grilled fish with a lovely tomato sauce, so it is even possible to order quite a low carb meal if that is your thing (I won’t pretend that I was the good one who did that). The restaurant has a really relaxed feel to it, and with the great new walkway out the back, the outside dining is sure to be popular.

Plant of the Week

Powderpuff Lilly Pilly

Syzygium wilsonii The Powderpuff Lilly Pilly is one of the most beautiful shrubs to come out of the rainforests of Far North Qld. It is found naturally between Cooktown and Ingham. It has lovely lush green weeping foliage and its new growth is deep red. Its gorgeous flowers are large red powder puffs that hang from the shrub over Spring and Summer. These are quickly replaced with edible white fruit which the birds love. It is a fast growing shrub that grows to approximately 2 to 3m high and 2m wide. It can be grown in full sun but looks best in a semi shaded position. It is a wonderful shrub that can be kept in a pot, in a small suburban garden or as a jewel amongst a large rainforest planting.

Drowned, but not out!

Last month was certainly a wash out! I lost at least 50% of my plantings, both seedlings and more mature planting were totally removed from the paddock, as was the soil! On the bright side, the other 50% had an exceptional watering! Despite the losses, it is one of those attributes of growing your own food that sheds light on what our farmers go through on a regular basis in a battle to provide us with food and a living for themselves. Whether it is organic or conventional farming, primary producers battle the elements everyday with a lot more at stake, and my commercial crop of ginger was not detrimentally affected, so I can’t really complain! Along with the water, the available nitrogen and potassium (both having a weak chemical bond to the soil) would have been leached from the soil profile. I will be side-dressing the surviving plants with some blood and bone, dynamic lifter and manure to amend this. Furthermore on the nutrient side of things, I am aiming to plant a green manure crop of barley, which unlocks phosphorus from the soil. I’m also keen to get some nitrogen fixing lucerne in which is a great perennial that can be harvested regularly for high nitrogen mulch. Along with many other vegetables I'll be replanting, peas will be very high on my list. I just love them! There are numerous varieties of peas and snow peas available. My personal favourite has to be the sugar snap type where both the peas and the pod are delectable at any stage of growth! Gone is the wastage of a stringy pod or dated peas! It is best to get your legume bed ready for your peas and snow peas early as it can take time to adjust your soil pH to 6.5-7.5. I scatter a good handful of dolomite per square metre to achieve this and a generous scattering of Dynamic Lifter before mixing it through the soil. I’m planning also to try out a few different growing methods for my peas this year. I’m thinking my standard wigwam structure built from dead gumtree sticks from around the property for my home garden, along with doing the basic wire trellis for my larger commercial plantings. I really love the look and sense of nature I get with the wigwams covered in the vibrant green leaves and bountiful peapods and couldn’t give this away totally. I will also plant some hanging pots of peas in the grow tunnel just for curiosity sake. So a load of plans for this coming month, now just a matter of finding the time to do them all!I hope those that have had a chance to try growing the potatoes in the hay bales have noted some success. Mine are off to a great start and I look forward to a bale of potatoes! Have a bit of fun trying out some different gardening ideas if you can, I find it refreshing and exciting! Until next time in Get Up and Grow!

Gardening on the Edge is coming soon Gardening on the Edge is a garden trail and garden market yearly event coordinated by the Maleny Garden Club, and it’s on again this June 6 and 7. It provides an opportunity for locals and visitors to see a number of beautiful gardens at the one time and to attend the Garden Market at the Maleny Showgrounds, where there will be specialist plant and produce stalls, camellia flower display, homemade refreshments and daily raffle prizes. Generous garden owners make their properties available for the program – six grand gardens in total – providing a great opportunity to learn more about gardening and the region in general. Gardening on the Edge is the main fundraiser for the Maleny Garden Club, and since 2005 it has raised in excess of $50,000. The money raised has been distributed to local community organisations. Make a diary entry for June 6 and 7 to enjoy a visit to some great gardens and market stalls at Maleny and be inspired by our delightful gardens. Tickets are $20.00 for all six gardens, $12.00 for three gardens or $5.00 for one garden – with entry to the Garden Market being free. For more details see their website www.malenygardenclub.org or call 5445 7795.

The venue was an impressive building, the floral art was brilliant, but the show was a Cath Howitt showing off little disappointing. stems of Holmskovia John Innes made an interesting point that ants are good pollinators of the Macadamia nut flowers. Results of the competition bench for March: 1st Gordon and Cath Howitt,16 points, 2nd Trish Bradford, 14 points. soaked through with courage, forgiveness and God’s peace. Throughout this season we use words in our services that accentuate the nature of Jesus as the one who has risen from the dead. We commence our liturgies with Christ is risen. Alleluia. He is risen indeed Alleluia. I pray that these words resound in our hearts and shape our words and deeds. The resurrection of Christ changes the way we look at death, the way we engage in life, and the way we treat each other. There is more to our existence than the years we spend on this planet; we live here as people engaging in eternity, which gives everything we say and do deeper meaning for those around us and for ourselves. Happy Easter, this day and every day.

Glenview Mooloolah tennis club celebrations Contributed by Jenny Morris Our members are a buzz of talk about the recent upgrade of our lights. With the help of a grant from the GCBF we were able to replace four poles and install another four lights on courts two and three to eight lights and upgrade the wiring to the lights. Thanks to the Queensland Government for this grant and enabling our club to improve our facilities. We wish to thank James and Mark from All Terrain Power of Woombye for their help, advice and workmanship in completing our lighting upgrade without any hassles. Our next challenge is to build another court in the not-too-distant future so that our Monday night fixtures can finish earlier than at present. Our juniors would benefit from the use of another court as well.

www.gcnews.com.au

Another event to celebrate is our Junior Div 2b team, the Mooloolah Valley Marvels once again winning the Grand Final on 28th March 2015. Well done Daniel, Matthew and Jack. We were able to field four Junior teams in the Winter fixtures which started last week. Our Golf fundraiser day was a great success. On a magic day after the floods, 24 players took to the Beerwah course on May 3 and had a great deal of fun. The barbecue back at our clubhouse for the presentation of prizes was a fitting end to a beautiful day. Everyone went home looking forward to the next golf day. Well done to Piet and Kelly for organising this event. We raised $520.00 which will be put to good use improving our club facilities. Thanks to all our members who brought their friends along to help make our day a success.

With National Heart Week in the news last week, Cr Jenny McKay wanted to remind locals of our local Heart Foundation Walking groups who are part of Australia’s largest network of free community-based walking groups, with volunteer walk organisers leading the walks. Some of our local groups include: Beerwah Walkers - meet Monday to Friday at the Rotary seat at the entrance to Beerwah and District Community Hall for a 30 - 60 minute walk. The group meets at 7.00am during the winter months (April –September). For more information contact Frank on 5494 0709. Landsborough Walkers - meet Monday, Wednesday and Friday near the Animal Pound in Gympie Street North for a scenic three kilometre walk along Tunnel Ridge Road. Then for a bit of variety, the group meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the School of Arts Hall on Old Landsborough Road, for a delightful three kilometre walk along Old Landsborough Road. Walks commence at 6.30am and everyone is welcome though it always a good idea to ring Ann prior to walking to confirm details on 5494 1258. Maleny Heart Beats - on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays the group enjoy a variety of hinterland walks of approximately one hour that follow various routes and different grades. Walks commence at 6.30am until the end of May and then for the winter months commence at 7.00am. Please contact Malcolm on 5499 9290 prior to the day as the meeting places and routes vary. Walkers are welcome to stay afterwards on Fridays and enjoy breakfast at one of the local cafes. Mooloolah Walkers - meet every Monday, Wednesday and Friday (except on public holidays) at 6.30am all year round at the car park in Martin Rungart Park. For more details contact Annie on 5492 9359. So with the cooler months ahead why not get started on a regular walking routine and happy walking! MAY 13 2015 |

Just for Laughs

It Costs No More To Hire A Proven Professional

Pecans in the cemetery On the outskirts of a small town, there was a big, old pecan tree just inside the cemetery fence. One day, two boys filled up a bucketful of nuts and sat down by the tree, out of sight, and began dividing the nuts. “One for you, one for me, one for you, one for me,” said one boy. Several dropped and rolled down toward the fence. Another boy came riding along the road on his bicycle. As he passed, he heard voices from inside the cemetery “One for you, one for me, one for you, one for me...” He sped off but just around the bend he met an old man with a cane, hobbling along. “Come here quick,” said the boy, “you won't believe what I heard! Satan and the Lord are down at the cemetery dividing up the

souls!” The man said, “beat it kid, can't you see it's hard for me to walk.” When the boy insisted though, the man hobbled slowly to the cemetery. Standing by the fence they heard, “one for you, one for me. One for you, one for me.” The old man whispered, “boy, you've been tellin' me the truth. Let's see if we can see the Lord...?” Shaking with fear, they peered through the fence, yet were still unable to see anything. At last they heard, “one for you, one for me. That's all. Now let's go get those nuts by the fence and we'll be done.” They say the old man had the lead for a good half-mile before the kid on the bike passed him. Submitted by Hugh Jones, Beerwah
