Hi Everyone

E

verywhere you look in the media at the moment - it is all about Rudd and Abbott so it is pretty hard to ignore that the Federal Election campaign is in full swing. As usual at GCNews we have just focused our attention on the local candidates and on pages 16 and 17 we have included a profile on eight of the nine candidates who have nominated for the seat of Fisher. The one candidate who has not taken up our offer to contribute in this edition is the independent candidate Peter Slipper. As the sitting member for the seat, I am sure locals are already aware of him. And on a lighter note the other thing going on in Glasshouse

The Beerburrum Hall was abuzz with energy and ideas last Thursday evening, when the community came together to talk about revitalising the township. The town meeting, facilitated by Division 1 Councillor, Rick Baberowski, saw over 50 people discuss what they considered as important issues for the future of Beerburrum. Many at the meeting said that the reason they chose to live in Beerburrum was because of the small ‘hamlet’ community feel of the town and because of the fantastic primary school. And it seems that these two elements are keys for keeping Beerburrum as a desirable place to live. In recent times, about a dozen businesses have open and shut their doors in the Beerburrum area and locals want to make sure that the commercial area – small as it is – remains viable and sustainable. Vigorous brainstorming of ideas resulted in some great discussion and feedback – much of it directed at Council – with some creative and positive ideas for both Council and the community to work on. Ideas such as holding local markets, a regular festival, trail runs around Beerburrum, paths for bicycles, upgrading the park to include children’s interpretive facilities and rezoning parts of town to allow for home-based cottage arts and crafts industries. Two opportunities identified in the near future which should be capitalised upon are the centenary of the soldier settlement scheme in

2016 and the schools centenary in 2018. Issues that the group saw as detracting from the town included the lack of signage on Steve Irwin Way, the haphazard parking in town (although there were views for and against the current parking arrangements) and the deteriorated state of the tree plantings as the entry statement into town from the Steve Irwin Way. Cr Baberowski pledged to work closely with the community on taking advantage of opportunities identified, as well as taking anything back to Council that they can work on changing or improving. A popular idea from the night was the establishment of a cooperative store utilising the now empty general store. A small think-tank group has formed to work through the idea of setting up a community co-op in the town. Cr Baberowski is keen to assist, and offered to organise people from the successful coops in Maleny to speak with the group on what is needed to turn the idea into a reality. One new business about to be established in the town is a state wide building demolition and asbestos removal company in the shed more recently used as the rural produce store. Allan Boardman, the Manager of Precise Contracting, explained to the meeting that they will also be expanding their building salvage business based at Pomona into Beerburrum. “We are excited to be expanding locally and look forward to working with the people of Beerburrum and surrounds,” he said.

Channel 7’s Great South East

Golden Arches to rise over Glass House It’s hard not to notice the construction work happening at the moment adjacent to the Shell Service Station on what used to be known as ‘Moby Vics’ on the eastern side of the Bruce Highway. Earlier this year, the new Shell, Coles Xpress and Hungry Jack’s opened on the site, and it now seems they’ll be joined by the golden arches. Yes – McDonald’s is coming to Glass House Mountains. According to the Sunshine Coast Council PDOnline web-portal, a private certification building application was submitted to Council on June 21 and approved by Council on July 22. Unfortunately, very little can be ascertained about the development, as, according to PDOnline, there are no documents available for the public to access, apart from a current operational works application for signage. Local businesses at the site have been told that from the commencement of construction until the doors are open would be a period of 16 weeks, meaning that it’s planned to be opened in mid to late November. McDonald’s confirmed that the construction is on-track. “The development is going well and – weather permitting – the new McDonald’s restaurant should be open by the end of the year,” said a spokesperson from the company. <comments from Cr Rick Baberowski> According to the site plan for the McDonald’s development, there is also a future motel development planned for the area. Success for Beerwah State High School Contributed by Karen Sharpe

On Saturday, August 3, teams of students from secondary schools on the Sunshine Coast competed in a Culinary Challenge at the SCIT - Mooloolaba Campus. The competition was organised by the Australian Culinary Federation in conjunction with Queensland Youth Industry Links. The competition aimed to strengthen links between the hospitality industry and schools and encourage school leavers to consider a future in the industry. Three rounds of competition were held during the day with the winners announced in the afternoon. We were very fortunate to have both our teams win bronze medals. The girls were very excited and thoroughly deserve to be congratulated on their efforts - not the least of which have included early morning practice sessions. Jacinta Dwan and Shania Hunn have been selected to compete for the Sunshine Coast Region at the State Final on Saturday, August 17 at the Ekka. While they have certainly needed to commit themselves to the competition, the girls have also enjoyed some wonderful experiences. They have been mentored by some fine chefs at the master classes conducted by the Federation as well as their personal mentor, Cameron Matthews from the Long Apron Restaurant from Spicers Clovelly Estate at Montville. The girls have been a delight to work with and we are all very excited about Jacinta and Shania’s involvement in the Ekka. Good luck girls, the students and staff wish you every success. Glasshouse Country turns yellow for Daffodil Day

Beerwah resident Kerry Jarvis is calling on the local community to help brighten the lives of Queenslanders affected by cancer and support Daffodil Day, on Friday, August 23. Ms Jarvis is one of many Cancer Council Queensland Beerwah volunteers who will sell fresh daffodils and merchandise this year in celebration of the iconic fundraiser. Local Daffodil Day stands will be setup at Beerwah Woolworths (Peachester Road), Beerwah IGA (Simpson Street), Landsborough IGA (Mill Street) and Glass House Mountains IGA (Reed Street) on Thursday and Friday, 8.30am to 5.00pm, and on Saturday, August 24, 8.30am to 12.00noon. Ms Jarvis and the organising committee from Beerwah Coastal Village Markets will also set up another stand at the Beerwah Charity Sports and Spring Carnival on Saturday, August 24. The annual carnival, which raises funds for CCQ, promises to be a great day out with entertainment for the whole family including horse events, markets, fashion parades, and scarecrow competitions. Ms Jarvis encouraged locals to embrace Daffodil Day and help grow hope for better treatments, hope for more survivors, and hope for a brighter, cancer free future. “Everyone loves to have a bunch of daffodils in their house – so I encourage people to purchase fresh flowers or merchandise for a good cause,” she said. “There is so much support for Daffodil Day in the area which is fantastic to see - already many shops in town are selling merchandise in the lead up to the big day.” Daffodil Day was introduced to Beerwah 10 years ago when local woman Glenda Halpin set up the very first stand outside IGA – and has continued to support the annual fundraiser wholeheartedly. Over the years Glenda’s hard work and dedication and ability to encourage volunteers to get involved locally has meant that Daffodil Day has become a popular and successful event in Glasshouse Country. Master plans, trees, roads, pools, permits – and Giving a Moo

These were the topics of discussion at the recent monthly breakfast meeting held by Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay at the Thunderbird Café in Mooloolah. Cr McKay uses the informal community forum to outline new initiatives and take feedback from locals on issues which are of concern. The Mooloolah Recreation Reserve Master Plan is a long-awaited document for locals. Cr McKay was pleased to report that, after extensive community consultation and upon endorsement of the document at a Council general meeting, the Master Plan will be a key part of the future of Mooloolah. “Master Plans are very important as they form an endorsed position of Council and without a Master Plan it’s very difficult to get onto the funding radar of Council,” said Cr McKay. A hot topic for discussion was the removal of the fig tree inside the fenced playground area of Martin Rungert Park at Mooloolah. Cr McKay acknowledged that there is some discord about the decision. “We have consulted with the community and whilst some do not agree there was overall acceptance for the need to ensure the longevity of the remaining two trees,” she explained. The removal of the tree is an operational decision which Cr McKay says does not need to be decided at a Council meeting. Another hot topic was the poor condition of Glenview Road. Cr McKay was pleased to say that she and Cr Rick Baberowski succeeded in having $800,000 allocated to removing dangerous bends and realigning the road. However, Glenview Road residents at the meeting said that there is much more needed than this. Cr McKay has agreed to organise an information stand in Mooloolah township on a future Saturday morning to speak with Glenview Road residents about the issue. Keep an eye out in GCNews for all the details. To brighter news, the plans are running smoothly to have the Mooloolah pool open by the coming swimming season – GCNews will report more on the developments when the arrangements are finalised. Cr McKay was pleased to be able to allay community group concerns relating to the recent announcement that they would be liable to pay permit fees running into the hundreds of dollars for community events organised on Council lands. “There is a moratorium on the fees until we can get a recommendation passed at a coming Council meeting to waive the fees for not-forprofit organisations,” she said. Lastly was the launch of the ‘I give a moo for Mooloolah’ campaign – a community pride and buy local initiative, reported in last week’s GCNews (it was on the front page). Cr McKay holds her breakfast meeting on the first Thursday of the month – no appointments necessary. www.gcnews.com.au

Exciting changes at the library Work will get underway in September on the Sunshine Coast Libraries online catalogue. By the second week of September you will feel more like you are using Google when you use the library Catalogue! Exciting changes include – ‘Did you mean?’ when searching (e.g. George Cluney or Did you mean…. George Clooney). Suggestions for what to read next based on what you read now, and easy one click options to see what else is available in a different format or to find other resources which might relate to your chosen search. To support these changes, we will have reduced services for the first week of September. You can assist by bringing your library card each visit! The Library staff thank you in advance and

look forward to sharing these exciting changes with library members.

Lights, camera, action It was butterflies and excitement on Friday, July 26 when Glenview State School’s Wakakirri team prepared for their evening performance in the 2013 Wakakirri Sunshine Coast Regional Finals. Yes the day was finally here and all of the students from Year 2 to Year 7 were prepped, polished and ready to go. The children, teachers and volunteer parents have worked tirelessly since the beginning of term one to produce a seven minute Story Dance performance based on the life and legacy of a local hero, Steve Irwin, The Crocodile Hunter. Behind the scenes of this short but jam packed performance, is hours of planning, story development, costume, props and set making, hair and make-up and of course face painting.

Contributed by Wendy Carroll

All combining in a stage illuminated with 80 beaming children. A huge thank you goes out to teacher, Mrs Melanie Osborne who started work late in 2012 to once again create the most wonderful seven stage minutes ever! There were two finals nights, with 11 schools competing. It was a long day but when the kids took to the stage in front of their proud parents and family, they really shone. The results were shown the following week on ‘Wakakirri TV’ directly from the Wakakirri website. The students were rewarded with the news that they had placed second overall in the Regional Finals. What an awesome experience and an amazing result for the tight knit Glenview School. We are once again in awe of our little stars… congratulations Wakakirri Team Glenview!

Reunion lunch at Landsborough Usually when you go to Latte Da Café at Landsborough you expect to find the brownies in the display cabinet – but recently they were also given a seat. Well actually they were former Brownies who took a seat at a reunion lunch for Landsborough Girl guides and Brownies who had attended in the late 60s early 70s. The lunch coincided with the Caloundra State High 50 year celebrations, and saw former guides travel from Perth, Cairns, Winton, Sapphire, and Maryborough. The Landsborough Guides were established 49 years ago – so the ladies have decided that they will get together next year and hold a fundraising event to mark the Landsborough Guides 50th year.

By Lea Parkes

A real highlight for the ‘former guides’ was that they were fortunate to be able to catch up with Brownie and Girl Guide leaders as well. Wendy Webb, who organised the day, said that it was a shame these days that the Girl Guides was not as popular as it used to be with many girls choosing to join the Scouts these days. “The Guides taught us some great lessons, establishing the fundamentals for life, and the type of adults we would become, many of the ladies are still very active community members who get behind fundraising and support efforts,” Wendy said. Those attending the recent reunion lunch passed the hat around and $530.00 was raised to assist the on-going costs associated with maintaining the Guide Hut on Old Landsborough Road.

Community News Young parent’s playgroup moves outdoors Recently a new fenced area has been installed at BADYCC to give the young parents support group that meets at the centre each Wednesday morning (except school holidays) the opportunity for the children to play outside. Sunshine Coast Integrated Family and Youth Services (IFYS) has been offering their support program to young parents across the Sunshine Coast for 14 years, and have been providing a free playgroup at Beerwah since late last year. The group co-ordinator Sheree said they believe playgroup is a fun way for families to get to know each other. It also provides parents access to information, support and other organisations that can assist them, she said.

SIDs fundraiser

When you duck into the servo to grab some petrol you don’t normally expect to see a whole bunch of people dressed as clowns. Well that is exactly what happened recently at the Beerwah Woolworths Service Station where a group of locals were fundraising for SIDs.

Amanda and Aaron washing windscreens

One of the mum’s Jo, who has been coming since the group started, said it was great for both her and her baby. “My baby Bianca just loves it, there are great toys and activities for the kids and also lunch is provided,” she said. The group would love to have other local parents go along with their kids and invite any parents aged under 26 years in Beerwah and surrounding areas to go along and try it out. They meet from 10.30am 12.30pm at BADYACC, at the front of the Beerwah Sportsground (next door to the skate park and pool) on Roberts Road. Thanks to Ron from the Beerwah Bakery who supplies the baked goods for lunch. If you would like to know more about the group you can contact Sheree on 0439 775 455.

They managed to bring plenty of smiles to the faces of locals as well as raising $672.00. The group would like to thank everyone who donated on the day for their generosity.

Beerwah team all dressed up

Contributed by Pam Innes Glasshouse Country Mothers' Union member Helen Page was enthusiastic about her visit to the Jane Austin Anniversary Celebrations, so she was invited to be guest speaker at the July MU meeting. Fellow travellers Margie Mander, Ethel Burgess and Jocelyn Morgan came along to add anecdotes, while Helen showed slides of the visit. Helen and Jocelyn came in costumes they had made for their Canberra visit.

Community mentors help address social issues

Connect2Parenting will help new parents with the challenges of child raising; and Connect2Employment will provide practical guidance and support to young people seeking employment. The organisation is always on the lookout for more community mentors to allow its popular suite of mentoring based programs to expand. It already runs a school-based mentoring program in more than 10 high schools across the Coast. While no program is offered in Glasshouse Country, the organisation is keen to expand into the area – (once enough mentors have been recruited they will be able to). Mentoring facilitator Renee McKenzie said mentors provided a positive role model and support, encouragement and guidance to help young people work towards creating their own optimistic future. They require no set of skills or specific profile but rather were people from diverse backgrounds with a range of expertise and experience. “The advice and support of people in the community who have met and survived the challenges that life may bring is invaluable to young people,” she said. Mentors complete a free, short training course and gain skills which can be invaluable in all areas of life and work. Free mentor training will next be held in October. To register, or for more information call 5442 4277.

Beerwah NHWQ AGM

A berry good morning

Esma, Jim, John and Pam, and the Area Co-ordinator Ron Stocks

We would recommend anyone visiting Strawberry Fields as it has a beautiful, serene atmosphere to enjoy a lovely cup of coffee. For any ladies wishing to join our club, and enjoy other outings like this one, please contact either Margaret on 5435 2172 or Elaine on 5493 3935. We raise money for the Smith Family and are also involved with the Learning for Life program. Part of the money raised goes towards sponsoring three children through the Learning for Life program. To find out more about this program you can visit the website: view.org.au. Check out our club on www.view.org.au/1645. html.

Contributed by Sheila Williams Beerwah Neighbourhood Watch, QLD held its AGM on Monday, August 5 at which the following people were elected to office: Area Co-ordinator, Ron Stocks; Deputy Area Co-ordinator, vacancy; Secretary, Maree Anderson; Assistant Secretary, Sylvia Shaw; Treasurer, vacancy ; Committee Member, vacancy; Newsletter Editor, Sheila Williams. The Good Neighbour Awards for June and August were presented. June Award: Pam and John Innes, who were nominated by Esma and Jim Rigby, who said “besides being good neighbours to us, Pam and John have been involved in community affairs for many years because of their commitment to the people of their community. A few examples: Meals on Wheels, Anglican Ball Committee, Charity Sports Day and the Peachester Horticultural Society. Although we have known them for many years we really do not know the full extent of their activities - they go about their business of quietly being good neighbours.” August Award: Anne Southern, who had been nominated by Trina Hayward, from Embracia. Unfortunately, Trina was unable to be present; her citation read: ‘Anne has been a dedicated volunteer at Embracia in Glasshouse Country for the past six and a half years (since 9.1.2007). Anne is extremely creative and has passed on her talents to the residents teaching them many new skills including beading. Anne also keeps all of our Embracia Photo scrapbooks up to date with beautifully decorated pages. Anne assists with bus trips and events such as Christmas Parties and EKKA week and all other special occasions throughout the year. We would be lost without her invaluable help.’

Quota holds 22nd Debutante Ball

There was a sea of smiling faces at this year’s Quota Debutante Ball with flashing cameras, wonderful music and a dream supper to top off the night. Quota’s Debutante Ball has again done the youth and Maleny proud. Eighteen debutantes and their very willing partners, after being presented to the Quota President Rana Bartlett and special guest Mr Chris Brooker OAM, danced the whole night long. Family and friends came along to witness this amazing event in the lives of these not so young people. They were young seven weeks ago, but something happened to them along the way to the ball that was really noticeable to the Quota ladies and their parents. Two little flower girls Amelie and Jaimie stole the show. They escorted the 18 debutantes and partners when being presented and they did so with much poise and commitment. Our two maids Claire and Kloe who were debs in 2013 also assisted on the evening. Congratulations to coordinators Karen Binstead and Vicki Heading from Beerwah Hair and Beauty for a job well done.

Throughout July, Network Video Landsborough participated in their sixth annual Cans4Films Festival, an in-store initiative that’s designed to provide tangible help in delivering hunger relief across the nation. Helping was simple – they encouraged their customers do their bit to end hunger by simply donating a can of food at a Network Video store and in doing so, they received a free weekly rental; and when customers donated two cans they received three free weekly rentals. Or for customers without spare cans they encouraged cold coin donations. Wilfred Rocker from Network Video Landsborough was pleased to be able to donate 63 cans to St Vincent de Paul along with $83.00 in cash. Basic fixing tips

No more flyers!

Read on for some basic tips that may help resolve some situations where things go wrong with your computer, internet connection or even smart phone. Computer lock-up: If your computer locks up and will not respond, and you’ve been really patient and given it every opportunity but now you’ve had enough – don’t pull the plug out of the wall! Hold the power button in (laptops and desktops) till the computer shuts down. This will normally take five seconds but if 10 seconds doesn’t do it, you may have to give up and pull the power cord. In some situations a Desktop PC may not turn back on after this scenario. It is worth pulling out the power cord, and pressing the on button for five seconds to discharge any floating voltage. Then re-connect the power cord and try again. For laptops, if it won’t turn on try the following: remove the power to the laptop; close the lid, turn it over and remove the battery; leave it for a minute then re-fit the battery and connect the power – now try turning it on again. No Internet: A common Internet connection failure can be cured by (rebooting your modem) turning off your modem for 30 seconds, then back on again – believe me, this works a majority of times. If you are having issues downloading your emails, check to see if you have any internet by opening your browser. If you discover there is no internet, then re-boot your modem as described. Smart Phone hiccups: If, from time to time, your smart phone starts doing some random things, it can be worth rebooting by turning it completely off, and then back on again. The re-boot can even work on DVD/Blu Ray players: mine has responded well after such a re-boot! Of course, should none of the above resolve your situation, contact your local professional for help.

It's the age of ‘new selling’. As business owners we need to be reliable solution providers, not just flyer droppers, as our potential customers have special filing cabinets for flyers these days. They're called garbage bins. This is just as important to remember when it comes to your business website. We all know it’s important to at least have a basic website with our name, services and contact details, but a small amount of extra effort can have a large effect on our website's conversion rate. For starters, it’s important to remember that your site could potentially have either a positive or a negative effect on your potential clients. An unprofessional or 'dodgy' looking site can have viewers clicking the 'back' button and going straight to your competition before even taking the time to read the first word on your page. As a reflection of your business itself, your website should appear professional and reliable. Furthermore it should scream 'you’ve found me, look no further, everything you’re looking for is right here, act now!' And it’s even better if your site makes it incredibly easy for the viewer to act immediately by making an online booking or purchase. Online sales through a payment gateway such as PayPal are a cost-effective way to make sales 24 hours per day (and who wouldn’t like a salesperson who asks less than 3% commission with no ongoing retainer?). After all, your website should be your automated, robotic servant... not your master! It should be working far more hours for you than you should have to spend on it. That’s the great thing about online services – a simple one-off development cost can put in place an asset which provides ongoing passive income.

Give small business a break I was introduced to a particularly nasty figure during the week. It wasn’t an underworld boss if that’s what you’re thinking! The figure was 21,000 and it represents the number of new regulations that business has to now abide by under legislative changes introduced by the Federal Government since 2007. While all businesses carry the burden of red tape, it is small business owners who are arguably challenged the most by it. They don’t have a compliance division or HR, WHS, legal or accounting departments. Given that 96.1% of Queensland businesses are classified as small business, it’s not surprising that their number one gripe is the cost burden and loss of productivity caused by red tape. At every level of government, regulation is suffocating small business. The costs and time involved in compliance is bad enough, but the unnecessary duplication between departments and layers of government makes it even worse. The Shadow Minister for Small Business gave a presentation recently, and the disincentives for starting up or running a small business were profound. It should be the opposite. Small Business Week in Queensland was a chance to remind the State Government of its commitment to cut red tape by 20%. The Premier has invited small business owners, to identify the unnecessary red tape that affects you and give him the exact details. Another idea that was floated this week was to connect the salary packages of senior public servants to hitting targets for red tape reduction in their department. Maybe this is the type of action needed to change what has become a culture of fees, charges, paperwork, regulations and renewals that are suffocating small business. Instead what is needed is a plan to encourage small business people to invest, expand, employ and to create opportunities. Send in your specific examples of unnecessary red tape and we will get the message through to policy decision makers. The Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce is your local business advocate in Glasshouse Country. Send your red or green tape experience to the chamber at www.glasshousemountains.com.au by email or Facebook. As a result of the chambers proactive engagement with businesses over recent weeks a number of new and renewed memberships have boosted the chamber numbers. I welcome and congratulate you for allowing the chamber to represent and assist your business.

Meet your candidates for the federal seat of Fisher ... Bill Schoch

Party: Palmer United Party Email: bill.schoch@palmercoolumresort.com.au Phone: 0414 650 498

Party: Katter’s Australian Party Email: meldonforfisher@gmail.com Phone: 0411 063 686

Bill Schoch (William Matthew) born December 21, 1949 in Bundaberg, Queensland, is the eldest of seven children of Bill and May. Educated at St Patrick’s convent and Christian Brothers High School in Bundaberg, he was a swimming champion, a rugby league forward and school captain. Bill graduated from the University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Laws residing at St Leo’s College where he played rugby in two premiership teams and was college President. He graduated from the Queensland University Regiment with the rank of Lieutenant and served with 1 Battalion RAR in Townsville and Canungra completing pre Vietnam training. He obtained accounting experience with international firms Ernst & Young and Price Waterhouse Coopers, a profession followed on from his father, grandfather and great grandfather, a Swiss engineer who settled in Brisbane in 1884. Bill founded William Schoch & Co Chartered Accountants, a Queen Street Brisbane firm in 1978 which grew to a practice of 25 professionals before being acquired by an international firm in 2006. Bill has served as a director of many companies including as Chairman. Bill joined Clive Palmer’s Mineralogy group in a senior executive role and has experience across the group gained over 35 years since 1978 when his firm first acted for Professor Palmer. Bill is a Company Director and the General Manager of Palmer Coolum Resort on the Sunshine Coast and enjoys an occasional game of golf. He is married to Jenny and has four children, Annabel, Dan, Martha and Will Schoch the sixth. Bill is a local in Fisher. His family ancestors were the first settlers in Montville in 1887.

I have lived on the Sunshine Coast for 19 years successfully operating a financial services business for the past 11 years. Frustrated with the political environment, I joined KAP to achieve a better outcome for country and community. I am passionate about bringing change to the political environment and getting a better deal for families. Foreign importation of food is decimating Australian industry and jobs. Only last week a delegation of international lobbyists and ministers from Chile, South Africa and the European Union strongly attacked the case of Australia imposing tariffs to save Australian industry and jobs. Our own politicians are listening to professional foreign lobby groups instead of acting to secure Australian industry and Australian jobs. Are these politicians acting in the best interest of Australia with this mentality? Each 457 visa issued results in lost Australian jobs; there are 125,000 of these visas. Australia can save 1.5 billion dollars by simply cutting back the intake of 457 visa workers from 125,000 down to 5,000. If we did that then we could get 120,000 Australians off Newstart Allowance and working again. My calculations are based on taxpayer dollars funding a single Newstart recipient without all the extra benefits. For benefits to reach ‘middle Australia’ and local communities there needs to be a willingness to address the fundamental issues without fear or favour. History shows Labor plunder the country into massive debt; Liberals sell and privatise what is left to pay that debt; well Katter’s Australian Party are here to save assets, and give back Australia to Australians. We don’t need political popularity contests to move forward and meet the real challenges over the next 40 years. I offer a fundamental shift in representation with positive changes for the country now.

Party: Family First Party Email: expectmore@tonymoore.info Phone: 0420 246 664

Party: Liberal National Party Email: fisher@lnpq.org.au Phone: 5477 7677

Tony is the conservative alternative for Fisher. He is a people-focused politician, grounded and connected with the community. He and his wife Rebecca have four children aged between six and 15. They live, work and study on the Sunshine Coast. Tony, a qualified tradesman, has two decades of small business experience and knowledge across many industries. He holds an undergraduate Psychology Degree, post graduate qualifications in legal studies, child protection and business. In addition, he has a Masters of Business Administration (MBA). Tony believes: That every decision concerning the environment or our natural resources must be designed to be renewable and sustainable so all future generations can enjoy its beauty. That child protection should be paramount and unyielding, protecting also a child’s natural relationships, heritage, culture and beliefs. That the defence of our country is essential and therefore requires adequate capabilities, resources and personnel that strongly feature integrity. That Australia must provide protection and support to suffering humanity which meets an individual’s basic-needs, and transitions them towards relief. That we must pioneer improvements in health, support and care to individuals, throughout their lifespan, based on need. That a fortified and supported household, marriage and family - provides optimal household health, resilience, protection and community benefit. That education and its funding design, should equip teachers with worldclass resources and training as they partner with parents to maximise a child’s learning potential. That valuing our local produce, innovation and skills – supporting local businesses, drives growth, provides employment, migration and business opportunity - which ultimately result in a strong sustainable Australian economy. Following his work in the Department of Communities - Child Protection (Qld), Tony created a private consulting practice as a Strategic Advisor, directing most of his energies to correcting social injustices and championing individual human rights of those who have lost hope. 16 |

Throughout his life, Mal Brough has shown he knows how to get things done … Mal Brough has a proven track record of delivery and the experience to secure real solutions. He has had a wide range of life experiences having run a family business, served in the Army and run a national charity. He and his wife of 29 years, Sue, have raised their family in Mooloolah and Glass House. As the Federal Member for Longman, Mal worked closely with the Hinterland community to strengthen the local economy and create jobs by securing funding for the first visitor information service at Glasshouse Mountains and also assisted to secure a grant to establish Maleny Cheese which now employs more than 40 locals. First priority - The issues most often raised with me are cost of living pressure, jobs and job security. The first priority of an incoming Coalition government will be to remove Labor’s carbon tax which has increased the cost of living and added additional and unnecessary business costs. Local plan - Anti-social behaviour can be a problem in Beerwah's main street. I’ll work hard to make a practical difference by fighting for the funds to provide CCTV cameras to help prevent crime and vandalism. We'll also be creating job opportunities for local young people by re-instating the successful Green Army. And we'll be pumping $1.5 billion into upgrading the Sunshine Coast section of the Bruce Highway. Specifically we’ve committed funding of a new interchange to replace intersections at Roys Road and Bells Creek Road. For the past 12 months I have demonstrated my commitment to our region by working fulltime to build strong relationships with community and business groups and with your support I can put that time to good use as your next MP. www.gcnews.com.au

Like many people who call the Coast and Hinterland home, Anna and I chose to live our years in semi-retirement in this very special part of the world. During my working life, I have been stationed in many different countries including Angola, Nigeria, Dubai, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and lastly, the United States and it confirms my view that we live in the best country on the planet. At 56 years of age, I have worked all of my life since leaving school in Grafton, NSW. Commencing as a trainee at the Port Kembla steelworks, I studied part time and gained a Bachelor of Metallurgy from the University of Wollongong. My career took me from labouring to managing large scale industrial facilities in steel, timber and construction. My last 13 years has seen me as a partner in a consulting firm specialising in industrial safety in high risk industries such as drilling and mining. After selling our business, my wife and I are now enjoying our time with me as a self-employed part time consultant. I have been a member of the ALP for 30 years. I believe in its central principles and have been distressed at the course of modern politics. I have nominated as a candidate because I am driven by a need to serve the community in which I live. From cooking the barbie at my kids’ Little Athletics to serving as a director on not- for-profits, my non business life has been dominated by my desire to be of service. I have enjoyed this campaign immensely. I love meeting people and learning about their lives, achievements and concerns. I am asking for the opportunity to represent the people of Fisher with enthusiasm and dedication. Let’s have A Better Way!

My goal is to apply political pressure to influence federal legislation and policies to preserve the values of our local lifestyle. This includes the deepening of our economic prosperity and the growth of our social capital. To achieve these outcomes I would work with communities by engaging people and empowering them with opportunities to express their needs in a welcoming and empathic manner. I will use monitoring methods developed specifically for gauging the ongoing effectiveness of resulting actions. Affordability of housing, health, food and mobility are significant issues to be addressed with a high priority. Many creative methods exist to move from the current business-as-usual attitude; which threatens the wellbeing of generations to come. This change associates with instilling hope and confidence in our youth so that they are capable of owning a home and can also afford to live without significant economic stress. Small to medium businesses are our major employers, hence their support is paramount to our economic wellbeing. Advocacy for their efficient support by Government agencies is essential; this would be one of my high priorities. Local ownership of businesses is another important factor in our local economic prosperity, and for building resilience to external economic shocks. Hence, support for, and protection of, local ownership is significantly important. Our natural environment is the source for sustaining the functions of our economy and social health, hence it is not to be destroyed or consumed for short-term gain. I live in Maleny and was born in Nambour. After 20 years in the Army and university studies I now work as a business systems analyst and software engineer.

Proudly, I’m your Australian Independents Candidate for Fisher. I've lived on the Sunshine Coast for more than 18 years and am from a family of Queensland pioneers who worked hard to create a strong sense of community, an ideal I value today. I am a family man with three children and a member of the Alumni University of Tasmania. As an Australian Independents politician, I will hold community meetings at least once a month in order to listen to your concerns. I believe that politicians should shelve their own beliefs, opinions and policies and focus on what their constituents want and need. Given this, in parliament, I will fight for you, serve you and protect you. I understand the challenges of small business, because I have been a small business owner myself. I know how important it is to cut red tape for, reduce administrative burdens of, and offer incentives to, small business. Thai boxing has been a passion of mine since 1997. I’ve travelled nationally and internationally with the Sunshine Coast Thai Boxing Club and am still a respected referee, judge and trainer. The level of commitment I’ve shown to martial arts over the years, is evidence of my strong capacity to loyally serve you. My policies: • Support small business • Establish new manufacturing industries • Protect our dairy industry • Job Security • Investment in traineeships and apprenticeships • Significant investment in all levels of education • Establish an Australian Maritime College • Establish a Sunshine Coast Australian Institute of Sport • Significant investment in mental health services and facilities • Lower cost of living • Stop privatisation • Reduce hospital waiting times • Significantly increase numbers of doctors and nurses • Increase Pension • Protection of self-funded retiree’s savings (no tax) • No carbon tax

Born in Bundaberg, I lived next to my grandparent’s small dairy property and learned first-hand about butter churns, hand separators and chaff cutters. Joining the Army at 16 to become a motor mechanic, later I trained in Army aircraft maintenance. I visited South East Asia, lived in PNG for four years, moved regularly between the Oakey Army Aviation Centre and various Headquarter positions with both the RAAF and Army in Melbourne. I am still happily married after 45 years to lovely Maureen. We have three daughters and seven grandchildren. When offered a job with the Defence Force Credit Union, I left the Army after 22 years as a Warrant Officer Class 1. I removed the uniform but remained working on Defence bases for another 22 years. I obtained an administration position responsible for 15 branches, and was later promoted to Area Manager. Having worked without a break between positions for 45 years, I decided to retire at 60. I have found my heart crying out for Australia. Asking, ‘Where are the statesmen and women who once cared about the welfare of our Nation and people?’ I am aware of forces in the Nation manoeuvring to steal away our way of life. I’m sick of seeing farmers getting a raw deal, manufacturing industries being decimated, small business struggling and seniors neglected. Determined to make a difference, I made a decision to stand as a Rise Up Australia Party candidate for the House of Representatives seat of Fisher. Why RUAP? It cares about people and the Nation and its policies address the issues that concern me. Why Fisher? My daughter and son-in-law, Kelly and Chris Davis, both teachers but currently School Chaplains in Maleny and Caloundra, have asked us to move to be near them and we have agreed.

Didge for Kids Show at Beerwah Kindy

School News Landsborough Students inspired For the second year running, the dynamic NED show has visited Landsborough State School and inspired students with the very simple, yet impactful message it delivers. Teaching three critical skills, through the story of a loveable cartoon character, NED, the show is designed to give students the tools they need to become champions at school and in life. NED's name serves as an acronym that makes the message easy to remember - N = Never Give Up, E = Encourage Others and D = Do your best. Every child can accomplish amazing things if they remember the message of NED and apply it to their lives. Students enjoyed an engaging performance that focussed on the importance of persistence, kindness, diligence and excellence. Humour, audience participation, storytelling and amazing yo-yo tricks all combined to make it a truly NEDucational experience.

AUGUST 14 2013

Contributed by Katie Piva The children at Beerwah Kindy thoroughly enjoyed the Didge for Kids Show recently which was presented by Jason Morris. Jason was taught to play the didgeridoo by an Elder of the Gubbi Gubbi aborigines, Lyndon Davis. Jason involved all of the children in the show and they learnt so many interesting things about didgeridoos. We were very fortunate that Jason also incorporated a small part of his ‘Dude that’s Different’ Show. Come and see our centre in action. Everyone is invited to attend Beerwah Kindergarten’s Open Day on Wednesday, August 21 from 9.15 am – 11.00am. Please bring your child’s morning tea. Our Open Day is a great opportunity for parents and children to see what happens at our Kindy and to familiarise themselves with the Centre. Children may be enrolled for the Year 2014 or for future years at our Open Day. Please note: There is a cost of $10.00 to put your child’s name on our waiting list. We look forward to meeting you.

Nail biter Athletics Carnival

This year the outcome of GCCC’s senior athletics’ carnival kept everyone in suspense for more than a week. Although the carnival was held on Friday, the Beerwah Sports’ Grounds were too wet and slippery to complete the high jump events on the day. Competition was fierce but a lot of effort went into fun, with students dressing up in their house colours and giving them a fantasy theme twist. There were blue avatars, green elves and red lady bugs to name a few. After a winning streak lasting almost as long as the Queensland Maroons, the blue house team (Ararat) finished the carnival day one point ahead of the green house (Zion) with the red house (Sinai) following close behind. However, with a week of high jump events ahead, Ararat could not rest on its laurels. Points were given for participation and achievement and with the winning title at stake, students rallied to give it their best. The athletic, nonathletic and temporarily crippled turned up to try and push their team points ahead. Kaylee Utting hobbled up to the high jump bar on crutches, pretended to jump and fell on the mat safely, thus earning a valuable point for her team. The drama continued to unfold right until the last high jump a week after the carnival. Ararat was sitting in front by only three points when Glen Morris from Zion gave an outstanding performance and thrust Zion into the lead to become the overall winners by seven points. See more photos on page 32.

Aaron Giles easily leaps the high jump earning valuable points for Ararat www.gcnews.com.au

Concern about Ngungun track

I attended the small business morning tea meeting that Andrew Powell hosted recently at the Glasshouse Mountains Tavern. I found the meeting most enjoyable and hope there are many more as the issue of Heritage Tourism has been lacking support ever since I came here in 1989. At the meeting he announced the opening of the new walking track to the top of Mt Ngungun – a great place for locals and visitors alike. However, at the meeting I raised a real issue of public safety now that, because of the walking track upgrade, the area will be much easier and more inviting for families to climb to the very top of the mountain. It would be very easy for a small child – even under close parental supervision and control – to fall over the cliff face. We all know how fast small children can be and how they don’t understand the element of danger – and with the amazing view from the top, parents could easily be distracted. And even just a second or two of distraction could result in a terrible accident. The response I got from Andrew and the Chamber of Commerce President, Bob McLean, was very disappointing – ‘we can’t wrap people in cotton wool’ they said. I suggested a possible natural or railing barrier in the most used area with suitable signage so that tourists not so familiar with the area can be protected. Other mountain top lookouts have a similar safeguard, so why is the local Member so dismissive here? On the track up to the top there are sections with safety railings, but not at the most dangerous spot – the cliff top. This path is going to be really great for local tourism and hopefully there will be many more tracks upgraded, but we must have at least a basic duty of care towards people who we are inviting into our area. Duty of care I know can be a can of worms but in this case I think something needs to be done. If a child loses their life because of a simple lapse of concentration by an adult, it would be an absolute tragedy for that family – especially when the risk is so obvious to any sensible person. And what would be the damage to our reputation as a safe family holiday destination? Andrew, please think constructively! Steve Ralph Glass House Mountains

Just not good enough

In response to Bianca's letter re throwing of rubbish from car windows, I certainly have to agree. We live on a busy rural road and I am always astounded with the amount of rubbish people just throw out of their car windows. Would they throw it out on a suburban street? Who is responsible for cleaning up this rubbish? I don't particularly like picking up people’s plastic bottles, cans, milkshake containers, or a halfeaten orange. It's not an easy task to get down into the storm water gutter and pick up the litter. A bit more consideration would be appreciated. Think before you throw. Susan Price Mooloolah Valley

Please slow down

While riding on my horse at Glass House Mountains today (as I and many others do on the weekend) I had the unfortunate experience once again of drivers not slowing down when driving past us. I would like to ask all drivers to please Slow Down when they see horses on the road. It is a major safety concern, when drivers roar past us without providing a little clearance. Although our horses may be used to traffic, they are also unpredictable by nature and a bit of courtesy from drivers would go a long way to ensure the safety of both horse and rider. Please try to be a little considerate and give thought to others - something we seem to have forgotten how to do these days! Marisa Thompson Beerwah

Graffiti cleanup needed

I find it fascinating the Council have erected $$$ worth of new directional signs for tourists but have not given any attention to the graffiti that these people see either as they enter or leave this beautiful area. The over rail bridge has been scarred for months and the fencing below. A clean up would be great. Ann Morgan Glass House Mountains

Telstra hello Telstra is that you Telstra?

I can’t hear you Telstra I will call you back on the landline....

Ok so in the last five years the reception here near the Glass House Primary school has been reasonable. Except last year there was that few months of very poor reception that began suddenly and got back to normal just as suddenly. Reader feedback to the Glass House Country News no doubt encouraged Telstra to find and fix the fault! So then a couple of months ago, a sudden return to almost unusable. Telstra have been happy to give me mobile service at no cost and I have kept quiet waiting for the new tower. The new tower is ‘big and beautiful’ and externally looks finished. Please tell me the new tower has not been switched on yet. Please Telstra, five bar reception can remain a sweet dream, all I want is my usable normal reception back again. If you are having a similar experience (and the Tower is active) it would be worth our while to provide feedback and speak up. Local Resident Glass House Mountains Editors note: We will follow this up with Telstra and report back.

Community Sports Days

The annual Beerwah Charity Sports & Spring Carnival, coming up on Saturday, August 24, has developed into a local icon during its 42 years. Glasshouse Country News readers may be interested to know something of the background to this event. When the first Beerwah Charity Sports was held in 1971, it was based on a much longer tradition of community sports days popular around the Beerwah-Peachester district. The program followed the format of those earlier sports days, including horse sports, athletics, wood chopping and novelty events. Newspapers from the 1940s and 1950s report on fundraising for a variety of causes, e.g. the Beerburrum Hospital, local halls and schools, and both Beerwah and Peachester CWA Branches. A sports day at Beerwah in 1948 was organised for the specific purpose of fundraising to build a CWA rest room at Beerwah. The Nambour Chronicle of April 16, 1948 outlines the plans for this event:

Sports Day for C.W.A. Rest Room

‘The ambition of the Beerwah Branch Country Women's Association to build a rest room in Beerwah for the use of country women, visiting doctor, clinics, etc. appears well on the way to fulfilment. A capable and energetic committee, under the leadership of Mr. C M. Wimberley as president and Mr. F. Wickham, who combines the duty of secretary and treasurer, have arrangements well in hand. Advertising posters on display feature wood chopping events with prizes totalling some £33. Wood chopping events will be under the stewardship and rules of the Queensland Axemen’s Association. A ladies' wood chop is also featured, but the programme does not make it clear if contestants for this event should be members of the Q.A.A. An extensive programme of children's events includes school child's pony turn out.’ Peachester History Committee is fortunate to have in our collection an original copy of the poster referred to in this news item. An extract from the poster lists some activities which we don’t see at the modern sports day. The Cigarette Race would raise some eyebrows now; and how would current 40-year-olds feel about the Old Buffers' race? The broom throwing competition has continued however, and is still hotly contested each year! It is good to know that the CWA achieved their aim, and their rest room is still serving the community well. The modern Beerwah Charity Sports is also an important fundraiser, with all proceeds each year going to Cancer Council Queensland to assist with cancer research.

Share your views and win At GCNews we love our readers to share their views on important issues in our local community, and to thank you for your efforts, we will choose one letter at random each month to receive a free ‘Family Pass’ to Australia Zoo. Please note that letters that contain personal attacks will not be considered. We want to find out what issues are important to you! 20

Senior Moments Pets for Life Project

Senior Moments

Many seniors dearly love their pets but as owners age it can become more difficult to take care of their pet’s physical needs, taking them for walks, grooming and vet visits. To make sure that pet owners can be given support to continue having their pets live with them, a completely free service has been set up called ‘Pets for Life’ that matches pet owners up with volunteers that can assist them. The project has been running in Caloundra by the Caloundra Community Centre and they have recently been given funding to expand the program out across the Sunshine Coast. Pets for life are also looking for volunteers who would like assist others with their pet needs. If you are a person who has strong animal welfare values and enjoys the company of older people this may be a perfect volunteer role for you. If you would like to know more about either organising to have a volunteer come to you or becoming a volunteer give Vicky a call on 5491 4000.

Grey nomads urged to put safety first

Thousands of seniors are taking up the challenge of the grey nomad travelling throughout Queensland and those preparing to head off are being reminded to stay safe on the roads and look after their health during the peak travel season for retirees. Police and Community Safety Minister Jack Dempsey along with Police, Emergency Services and the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) have issued some important reminders for retirees for when they hit the road. “While grey nomads may have been driving for most of their lives, generally this experience has been gained in suburban streets rather than remotely or on outback highways,” Mr Dempsey said. “We want all of our road users to have a safe and enjoyable trip and I ask grey nomads to drive to the road conditions, give way to heavy vehicles, be mindful of the weather and wildlife and to take regular breaks. “While our emergency services and organisations like the RFDS do a fantastic job, long distances can sometimes mean we cannot reach you immediately so please take all precautions to ensure you reach your destination safely. “It’s also worth remembering smaller towns may not have a pharmacy or a hospital, so please make sure you pack plenty of medication and any other supplies you might need to see you through your trip.” Royal Flying Doctor Services’ Regional Manager Jennifer Craig said the RFDS has 85 years of experience providing emergency medical evacuations in the bush but, unfortunately, up to a quarter of these are the result of travellers getting into trouble on their outback adventures. “The good news is, with proper preparation and planning, many of the pitfalls of travelling through remote and isolated areas, including unsealed roads, kangaroos, road trains and heat, to name a few, can be avoided,” Ms Craig said.

As part of their planning, travellers are encouraged to visit the ‘Your Health’ section of the RFDS website www.flyingdoctor.org.au Among the tips included are: • Carry a summary of your medical history, take all your medication and pre-fill scripts before you leave. • Avoid travelling after a new diagnosis and ensure your doctor gives the all-clear to travel. • Take ample food and water and don't rely on waterholes, dams, bores, mills, tanks or troughs. Store water in small containers and don't wait to feel thirsty before taking a drink. • Be prepared for extremes of temperature and watch for signs of heat or cold exposure. Carry a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent, suitable clothing and good walking shoes, a fire extinguisher, an HF radio (mobile phones and CB radios will not work in remote areas), a first aid kit, compass, whistle and a lighter. • Plan your route in advance - source good quality, detailed maps and get local advice about conditions. Consider carrying an EPIRB. • Keep in in touch with family or friends about your intended trip, progress and expected return and keep a list of emergency contacts handy. • Be aware of driver fatigue - try to break your trip into shorter distances and use rest areas. Happy travels

Steps becoming difficult? If you are thinking about installing a stairlift, and your stairs turn corners, Master Lifts offer you a safe and reliable solution. Master Lifts Minivator stairlifts have helped thousands of people overcome the problems posed by going up and down their stairs at home. The Minivator 2000 stairlift suits most staircases with bends or corners and offers you all the basic functions that you would expect and much more. With a choice of six upholstery colours and two track colours the Minivator 2000 compliments most colour schemes. Fitted to the stairs, not the wall, you will not need to redecorate following installation. Like all Master Lifts stairlifts the Minivator 2000 has a battery backup which means it will continue to work in the event of a power cut so you do not need to worry about being stranded upstairs or down. The compact unit folds up leaving the staircase free for other users and the bespoke track is designed to fit your individual staircase and maximise clear space on the stairway. The lift comes with two remote controls which means, once folded, you can easily send it to the upstairs charge point freeing up space in your hallway. Safety comes as standard with a range of safety sensors that are designed to stop your lift if it meets any obstruction as you travel up the stairs, an easy release retractable seat belt for added peace of mind and the operating toggle makes it safe and easy to use. To book your free, no obligation demonstration call Master Lifts on 1300 454 387 or visit www.masterlifts.com.au.

Andrew Powell State member for Glass House P: 5435 2013 Update on the Queensland Plan

Identifying community solutions to community problems, maintaining a greener focus and supporting and promoting small business are some of the initial views provided to The Queensland Plan from the Glass House electorate. Initial feedback has identified strong support in establishing Queensland as futuristic and open to innovation with a strong focus on investment in our brightest minds. More than 10,000 people from every corner of the state have responded to the six questions developed collaboratively by Queenslanders at the Mackay Summit. Some Queenslanders have opted to join in local community events to share and debate their views, while others have gone online to have their say. In the electorate of Glass House we have held various drop in sessions and Information booths over the past few months to encourage people to share their vision. I also recently attended the Glasshouse Country Christian College to discuss the Queensland Plan in detail with them and how they can be best involved in this process. Whatever the method, it is just great to see that conversations are underway across the state and we’re hearing great ideas, stories and strong opinions on what people want and don’t want. I strongly encourage everyone to contribute – our diversity is unearthing some wonderful perspectives that will help build a strong future. Submissions to The Queensland Plan are open until August 30 at www.qld.gov.au/queenslandplan.

National Tree Day

Locally this year I spent National Tree Day with the Peachester State School for the annual schools planting on Friday, July 26. The school really got behind this project and it was great to see the kids so enthusiastic about doing their bit for the environment. Thanks to student Jade for her assistance with my shrub planting. I also dropped in to see the folks at GMAN, Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network, for their buy one get one free plant sale at the Glasshouse Mountains Neighbourhood Centre on Saturday, July 27. This group do such an amazing job protecting and preserving the local Glass House environment so it was truly a pleasure to be involved in this great event.

Speed Limit Review

The Newman Government is currently calling for Queenslanders to nominate a road as part of a landmark state-wide speed limit review. The review forms part of the $350 million, two-year Road Safety Action Plan, announced as part of the 2013/14 Budget. Queenslanders are encouraged to participate in the review if they believe there is a road with too high or too low a speed limit, there is a road with too many speed zone changes, or if they have suggestions about how to make speed limits easier to understand. The intent of the review is to improve consistency of speed limits throughout the state and to ensure the right balance exists between safety and taking into consideration traffic, pedestrians and surrounding infrastructure. The review opened on August 1 and is expected to take approximately six months before results will be published. Submissions can be made online at www.tmr.qld.gov.au/SpeedLimitReview from now up until midnight on Friday, September 6, posted to Speed Limit Review, PO Box 673, Fortitude Valley Queensland 4006, or dropped into the Caloundra Electorate office at 188 Bulcock Street.

Changes to the Sunshine Coast Bus Network

TransLink is proposing to make significant changes to the Sunshine Coast bus network in late 2013. The network changes are as a result of an extensive review of the bus network and public consultation, which commenced in July 2012 and will coincide with the opening of the new Maroochydore Bus Station. TransLink is holding information sessions across the Sunshine Coast this month to provide the community with details of the proposed changes, including timetables and route maps. The information sessions will be held between Monday, August 19 and Thursday, August 29 at the Sunshine Plaza, Kawana Shopping Centre and the University of the Sunshine Coast. Full details of the information sessions can be found at www.translink.com. au or you can call 13 12 30 anytime. Please do not hesitate to call the Caloundra Electorate office on 5491 2780 if you have queries about the above initiatives, or if you have something else you would like to discuss. Information provided by the Office of Mark McArdle (Member for Caloundra). Mark is on sick leave from July 25 to September 2. www.gcnews.com.au

Environment Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network Environmental Vandalism Most of us, and particularly GMAN members, have a love of our natural environment and enjoy bushwalking. On regular walks in our National Parks and in particular our natural state forests, we have become increasingly concerned at the damage caused by trail bikes and 4WD vehicles. No, I am not talking about pine forests where these vehicles are permitted to indulge their noisy, muddy and damaging obsessions. The areas of concern have native vegetation equivalent to that in our National Parks, have magnificent views, and spectacular displays of wildflowers throughout the year. They also once had padlocked gates reminding us that no motorised vehicles are permitted! To the vandals of the forests legal areas for their ‘so called sports’ offer no challenge! Locked gates are incentives to bring out the bolt cutters or make a new track around or even through barb wire fences! As bush walkers we look for interesting tracks to experience the natural beauty of our area. A recent walk to the western boundary of the Mt Beerwah National park and through the state forest left us shocked and disgusted at the damage. What was once a forest maintenance track and a narrow but easily accessible road is now a mess of mud at least three road widths with corrugations and even relics of abandoned vehicles. So much for experiencing the natural beauty, when every step leaves you ankle deep in mud. Look up if you dare and see a mystical and seldom seen view of Mt Beerwah! In the midst of the mayhem the beauty of an uncommon red styled Banksia spinulosa, or purple twining Sarparilla vine seems out of place.

Do you have an hour or two a month to spare? Would you like to learn more about the flora and fauna in your area, and meet new friends? For more information on GMAN activities and nursery sales please call Cliff (5438 7118) or Gwen (5493 0029). www.gman-inc.com.au

Working bee success The Friends of Cahill Scrub had another successful working bee at our current project in the Cahill's Scrub Reserve on Saturday, July 27. The gang worked with enthusiasm, clearing a large section of the rain forest of weeds, (mainly lantana), and planted more trees. With the almost continuous wet weather all the trees we have planted are thriving. Our next working bee will be on Saturday, August 31. We welcome anyone interested in joining us in restoring this important wildlife habitat. Incidentally, about 120 bird species have been identified in this locality, apart from echidnas, sugar gliders, platypus and other native animals.

Environmental Coordinator Jan Kesby of Mooloolah River Waterwatch & Landcare Inc. talked to the students about caring for our planet and in particular our waterways. She also talked about the endangered Richmond Birdwing Butterfly and how important it was to create habitat for the butterfly to lay its eggs. The students were very eager to plant the 80 native trees and 10 birdwing butterfly vines. As a token of gratitude they were given a bag of goodies and a birdwing butterfly to take back to Japan with them. It’s wonderful to be able to be involved in sharing our information internationally – all the way from Mooloolah Valley.

Mice in our mangroves Don’t be surprised if you are out in the saltmarsh and mangrove areas along Pumicestone Passage at night and think you see a small mouse-like creature. Cheryl Bolzenius, Senior Project Officer with WetlandCare Australia explained that until recently, the presence of the vulnerable water mouse (Xeromys myoides) was unknown in the local area. “Since 2011, Project Officer Nina Kaluza has been traversing mangroves and saltmarsh areas from Lake Weyba to Donnybrook looking for this elusive critter and its nests,” said Cheryl. Locally, surveys along Glass Mountain Creek and Hussey Creek at Beerburrum located 80 nests, and that was after just spending two days searching. The water mouse is typically found in coastal saltmarsh and mangrove areas, constructing nesting mounds above the high tide mark. They forage in the mangroves at night, feasting on invertebrates such as crabs, shellfish and snails. “With funding through the Australian Government’s Caring for our Country, we are working with HQ Plantations to address threats to the water mouse from habitat loss, fragmentation and degradation within the plantation area. “Signage to raise the awareness of the presence of the water mouse, combined with barriers to prevent vehicle access to sensitive saltmarsh areas, have been installed. “With the co-operation and support of the local community and visitors to the areas, it is hoped that these actions will help in the protection of habitat for the water mouse and other animals that utilise the saltmarsh and mangrove areas such as birds, crabs and fish species,” Cheryl said. career? Yes. Can you lose your health? Yes. Can you lose your youthful beauty? Yes. Can you lose your relationship with God? No, unless you choose to walk away from Him. Christians get to approach tragedy differently than the rest of the world. They get to rely on God for help. They get to have hope. But how? By intentionally leaning on God for stability, listening to God for direction, and looking to Christ for salvation. He is our Rock, our Shelter, our Great Shepherd, our Hiding Place. RBA: Reduction to official cash rate could be good news for home loans Anyone interested in taking out a home loan, regardless of whether it’s a first home buyer loan or for property investment, may be happy to hear that the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) cut the official cash rate earlier this week (August 6). Which could be fantastic news for those looking to enter the real estate market. The cash rate was reduced to a low 2.75 per cent back in May, before being slashed by another 0.25 basis points at the beginning of the week - lowering the cash www.gcnews.com.au

rate to a historically low 2.5 per cent. According to an August 6 statement released by Glenn Stevens, governor of the RBA, borrowing nationwide has decreased, but there have been signs of an increased demand for housing finance. Peter Bushby, president of the Real Estate Institute of Australia, said that housing affordability could increase by 4.7 per cent, while the while the average loan repayment amount required from median family incomes

has decreased from 29.9 per cent down to 28.5 per cent. “This is the best level of housing affordability since the December quarter 2009 and will be welcomed by investors who have been returning to the market in greater numbers over past months,” said Mr Bushby in an August 6 statement. “The average loan repayment would be $463 per week and that is $149 per month less compared to the figure recorded a year ago.” This could signal a fantastic opportunity for anyone looking

to secure a great deal on a home loan. Now could be the perfect time to get in contact with a home finance professional at Smartline and begin the search for a suitable loan for your situation. Teresa Harrison Phone 5422 9458 or 0410 648 098

Go Green Rainforest Nursery Plant of the Week Native Finger Lime Citrus australasica

When it comes to bush tucker in Australia, the Finger Lime is king. The stunning finger shaped fruits which turn a purple/pink or green when ripe contain pulp-vesicles that when eaten explode with a delightful lime taste in your mouth. This plant is very sought after and is regarded as a delicacy in Australian and overseas fine dining restaurants. The Finger Lime can be grown as a fruit tree in ground, is long lived in a pot or can be included in a mixed rainforest planting. It grows approximately 4 to 6m and prefers a full sun to semi shaded position with good drainage. It also produces a lovely fragrant white flower (out now) and its dense spikey foliage provides shelter for small native birds. We currently have grafted Finger Limes in stock in flower so if you are interested get in quick. If you would like more information on this tree or any other native plants drop in and see Simon or Melissa at Go Green Rainforest Nursery, 2620 Steve Irwin Way, Glenview. Phone 5494 5980. Blood, Sweat & Cheers Your guide to sport in Glasshouse Country

Beerwah Ladies Golf Club

Contributed by Sue Williamson Beerwah Lady golfers experienced another perfect day last Thursday, when 60 players competed in a 2 Ball Ambrose. This team event was sponsored by members, Meg Ferran and Marjorie Pavitt. The winners on the day were the dynamic duo Andrea Campbell and Cathy Stone, who combined well to come in with a score of 68 ¾ nett. Runners up, on a countback, were Di Smith and Barb Drury, with a very close 69 nett. Pin shots were taken by Mavis Brimelow and Carol Fraser on the 2nd, Cathy and Andrea on the 5th, Lyn Nichols and Kim Thode on the 16th and Joan Fletcher and Rosalie Green on the 18th. The ball rundown went to 70 ¼. Lady golfers are reminded that our Annual Charity Invitation Day, sponsored by Glasshouse Country Pest Control, is being held on Tuesday, August 20. This year all proceeds will be donated to Beerwah Rural Fire Service, so bring your sticks along for a great day of golfing fun.

Andrea, our sponsor Marjorie and Cathy

Athletics Carnival finally goes ahead Landsborough State School finally managed to hold its Inter-house Athletics Carnival on Monday, August 5, after having to postpone it three times due to wet conditions. They ended up with a beautiful sunny day, perfect for a sports competition. Team spirit was high as the day kicked off with the house captains marching their teams around the oval chanting war cries. Once the competition began, a crowd of family and friends cheered on the participants as they took part in a variety of athletic events. These events included sprints, shot put, discus, long jump, high jump and relays. Students, who had been training for weeks, put in their best effort to earn points for their sports house. Burgess claimed the Inter-house Shield for 2013 in a closely fought battle with Flinders and Petrie.

Congratulations to everyone who participated in the day, especially the age champions and the students who were selected to represent Landsborough State School at district level.

ARIES March 21 – April 20 You will surprise yourself with your original thinking. This is the week for you to show how you think outside the box and bring fresh, original ideas into play. The planet Venus is coming up opposite your Sun sign for the next few weeks. So it is a good omen for relationships. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 Mercury is making an anxious contact with Pluto so you are motivated to analyse opportunities. Your ruling planet Venus enters Libra, turning your values into social, rather than material ones. It’s a marvellous time to look for friendly and flirty co workers who want to play. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 For the next four weeks, Venus throws a supportive angle to your sign. You can experience more harmony, pleasure and love. Happy surprises can be the unexpected consequence of changes in plans. Mercury has an awkward time with Pluto which inhibits your love of debating. CANCER June 22 – July 22 Although this is a time to strive for excellence, sober Mercury makes you doubt your capabilities. However, do not compromise your negotiations and beliefs as you are to stand up for what you really want. A sudden flash of insight reveals new options for right actions.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 This is the week for your natural instincts to reach out further and arouse the will to push past obstacles. This is the time for the first quarter Moon and could involve you in situation that limits you due to a veil of secrecy. Discretion is advised. Others will be receptive to your ideas. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 This is the week to trust your instincts and follow unconventional insights. You will see how simple it becomes to suddenly find resolutions to current problems, or even with difficult people. Best not to sign credit or loan agreements under the obsessive energy of Mercury / Pluto. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 There is a slight difficulty in understanding information coming to you because of Mercury and Pluto veiling discussions with distrust and suspicion. Fortunately by the weekend inventive Mercury and Uranus bring a free flow of unconventional and enlivening witty ideas now. PISCES February 20 – March 20 This week brings great success by willing to help and serve others. Several mornings bring you love and joy that fulfil your emotional needs. Affectionate feedback from your relationship world as many are receptive to you speaking up with a bright, inventive idea. Accept good hugs.

VIRGO August 23 – September 22 As Venus enters Libra it brings you a month of more harmonious financial affairs. It’s a good time to seek a consultant’s advice and redefine your spending habits. Partnerships come into play in your fiscal life. This is because the Capricorn Moon brings compatible attractions. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 It’s nice to see a radical Mercury / Uranus benefit prevailing in your team work. Revolutionary ideas lead to amazing insights cutting through differences and allowing the formation of unexpected alliances, perhaps with a technical edge. News that people share proves beneficial. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 The planets Mercury and Pluto show you that too much force this week results in greater power struggles. Plenty of stimulations abound making you a bright, progressive thinker, and enlivened raconteur. Look forward to a happy weekend, as Venus into Libra seeks a nice hug.
