Hi Everyone Well the countdown for GCNews edition has almost hit blast off – well for holidays at least, we have just one more edition after this one and our year is done and dusted. We wanted to fast forward things a little so we will be bringing you the last edition for the year one day earlier – and just so you know it is not because Team GCNews are ready to race out the door but to give our advertisers an extra day before Christmas for readers to see what they have on offer. For GCNews (like any newspaper) to continue to survive we rely on the local businesses that advertise with us and in these tough economic conditions of the last 12 months we know how many local businesses are doing it tough and as a result have cut back their advertising - because they just can’t afford to do it. As a result of business’ cutting back on their advertising you will have noticed that we have had to
cut back the pages of the paper – and unfortunately from last week that has meant not including our television guide. We are sorry for any inconvenience this and any of the other space reductions that we have adopted have caused. We just wanted to let you readers know that it’s not because we don’t care about what is important to you – but it is all about being able to continue to provide our community with a weekly paper. So as you think about your Christmas shopping give a thought to how important it is to our community to keep our local businesses going and spend some dollars in Glasshouse Regards,

This will also see access to the park improved. Division 1 Councillor Anna Grosskreutz said that the purchase is a major milestone for the Beerwah community. “Through this purchase council has demonstrated its commitment to open planning and the creation of spaces for the community to be able to decide how they would like to see them developed,” Cr Grosskreutz said. She said Council’s Open Space Strategy 2011 identified the need to investigate increasing the capacity for Turner Park in Beerwah. “The property purchased is strategically located as it adjoins the existing park which is in accordance with council's open space policy direction. “It is a fantastic opportunity for the Beerwah community and will be complementary to the Place making project that has commenced and has a comprehensive community engagement program. She said the community will be invited to have input into the final design of the new section of park in the 2012/13 financial year.

Ken tumbles into trouble
Landsborough
By Lea Parkes
Dental Prosthetist PETER J. LANGLOIS REG. (QLD) • Acrylic Full / Lightweight Metal Partial Dentures • Relining Existing Dentures • Repairs • Mouthguards
Ken describes the incident as almost ‘scalping’ himself, and believes that the trauma associated with such an injury could have killed an older person or someone in not such good shape as himself. He has contacted Cr Anna in regard to the incident and she has directed the report through to Council’s claims area where it will be investigated. Ken said Council officers came out to the Peachester Road site a couple of days later and pressure cleaned down pavers, and completed some minor maintenance work on the footpath further down the road, but he is disappointed that nothing has been done to improve the hole that caused his fall. Ken believes that the pavers which were used when the shops were built five years ago are totally unsuitable for the job, and that all of Council’s footpaths should be concrete. “With all of the candidates for the Council elections busy campaigning I am going to make it my mission for them to realise what a priority it is for our community to have concrete footpaths that are safe for all users,” he said.

A narrow escape
Not too many people have been bitten by a brown snake and lived to tell the tale. Glass House Mountains resident Angela Henry did just that, and wants to share her story with others in the hope that someone else is just as fortunate. Earlier this month, Angela was minding her own business, tending to her garden when she disturbed a black headed brown snake in her garden, which bit her left pinky finger. She knew enough to know she was in trouble, so together with husband Grayson, they went through the process of first bandaging and immobilising the wound site and limb, and then calling 000. Throughout this, Angela equally knew the importance of remaining calm and still, and to fight back the ominous fear that threatened to engulf her. And it was that course of action, along with the expertise of the paramedics that so very quickly responded to her call for help, which most likely saved her life. Officer in charge at Beerwah Ambulance Station Allan Ross, who was the first paramedic at the scene, said Angela’s happy ending had a lot to do with the course of action she and her husband followed. “In the event of a snake bite, it is vitally important to first apply a compression bandage, call 000, and remain still and calm until help arrives,” Allan said. He said every snake bite should be treated as a poisonous until further tests using the correct equipment prove otherwise. “When applying a compression bandage, it is important to start at the bite site, and cover the whole limb with firm pressure.” Allan said everyone should have a basic knowledge of first aid, and have a first aid kit at home, which included an elasticised bandage, 75-100mm wide, which can be used as a compression bandage. Angela said she was surprised to learn that many people aren’t aware of the correct way to apply first aid in the event of a snake bite. She said there wasn’t a second, even a millisecond, when she didn’t remain
Angela, pictured with daughter Cadence, hopes her experience will raise awareness of how to administer first aid to a snake bite victim, before help arrives aware of her response to her fear, and to remain still and calm, however she remains philosophical about the whole incident, which very easily could have proven fatal. “There is nothing you can do to guarantee survival, but there is a lot you can do to increase your chance of survival,” Angela said.

Quilts for Christmas The Mountain Quilters Club, that meets fortnightly at the Peachester Hall, celebrated the true meaning of Christmas at their recent Christmas break up meeting when they gave 13 beautiful quilts to the Sunshine Linus group. The Sunshine Linus group provides quilts and other handmade comfort items to various charities on the Sunshine Coast including foster children, children in hospital, to local nursing homes, Alzheimer patients and for students attending special schools. Yvonne Atkinson from Linus said they were really pleased to be able to accept the beautifully made quilts made by the members of the Mountain Quilt Club during the past year. A representative of Sunshine Linus gave the quilters a short talk about what their group is achieving and how as quilters they can help. The group is based in Nambour, but covers the whole of the Sunshine Coast – Cooloola area. If you would like to know more you can contact Yvonne on 5471 0776. The Mountain Quilters have been meeting for 26 years with the first meeting held in the lounge room of Barbara Grigor, and over the years has grown to now include 60 members. Barbara and two other founding members still are part of the group and were there to celebrate the Christmas breakup with plenty of enthusiasm.

Charity Sports Funds To Cancer Council
Although the 2011 Beerwah Charity Sports suffered some setbacks with an extremely wet weekend, the Committee are pleased with the overall result from this year’s fund-raising for Cancer Council Queensland. A cheque for $17,500 was presented last week to CCQ Sunshine Coast representative Jodi Durkin. Committee Chairman Bruce Page acknowledged all those local residents, businesses and community groups who helped to make this result possible, and thanked the community for the great team effort. Two raffles which were not finalised at the Sports have since been drawn, and the results are: ‘Fitness Matters’ subscription won by David Gower, Fishing Charter won by Andre Zakis.

From the Schools From Narelle Hill Beerwah State High correspondent
Ushering in a Golden Age Many things are gold; gold medal, gold star, silence is golden, and golden oldies. Well, I prefer silver. I’m more than aware of the connotations surrounding the colour gold; first, best etc., but for aesthetic value the general consensus is that silver is preferable. Aesthetic value does not care about or include the comparative rarity of metals! Now by this stage I’m sure you’re wondering why I have decided to have a miniature ramble regarding metallic colours. Beerwah State High School is establishing a rewards system in 2012 and an integral part of this will be the Gold Card. The Gold Card is a means of rewarding students who have reflected the behaviours that the school highly values, such as pride, honesty and success in both school and community settings. The students who have earned themselves a Gold Card are rewarded by receiving discounts or special deals. Excuse me for the generalisation but I think that everyone likes discounts and deals. Approximately 24 businesses around the local area have signed on for this program so that there will be a large variety of rewards to choose from. So now I hear you ask - how does one get their hands on this card of gold and wonders? Simple! On your report each semester in the Effort and Behaviour columns you get A’s and up to two B’s (at the maximum, with nothing below). Really it’s not that difficult. My advice is don’t make the teachers want to fill their ears with glue and you’ll be fine. They’re actually pretty nice folk, or civil at the very least, and you’ll be well on your way to getting yourself an exclusive Gold Card! Now to solve my gold versus silver problem, I suggest keeping the Gold Card (I’m quite fond of the idea) but having the actual card silver. The confusion and double takes that would create! ‘Just let me get out my Gold Card.’ ‘Uhh… that isn’t gold?!’ Well… I’d be entertained. For more information on the Gold Card Initiative at Beerwah State High School in 2012 visit www.beerwahshs.eq.edu.au

Students shine at end of year performance Landsborough State School students put on a wonderful Christmas concert recently for the community to enjoy. The whole school joined together to open the event with the song, 'We've got the Music'. The Preps and Year 1’s (pictured) stole the show. Each class then presented an item which displayed the great array of talent in our school. It was a most enjoyable evening. Well done Landsborough.
Dancing up a storm in Peachester A new dance club in Peachester has celebrated a successful first term with its first concert last month. Teghan’s Dance Club, with teacher Teghan Priori-Smith, may have only been running
for a little over eight weeks, but it has already created some seriously cool dancers and with some terrific moves. The club was originally established to give boys a non-intimidating environment in which to learn dance, but has proven so popular with locals that it has been expanded to cater for all children, from six years and over. With classes for juniors (six to eight years), a boys club (nine years and over) and a girls club (nine years and over), all young budding dancers, including those just wanting to learn, are well catered for. Although the club has finished up for the year, classes will resume in the new year, on Thursday, February 23. For more information phone 549 9192.

It happens all the time! You have the glass of wine, can of coke etc. sitting on the table next to your laptop…. And then either you or someone else knocks it straight onto the keyboard … Crisis!! Taking the following steps will minimise the level of damage to your computer. Depending on the amount of liquid spilt onto your laptop, and what you do immediately after will affect whether your computer has just been handed its death sentence. The problem occurs when liquid gets into the internals of the computer – although it may appear to work fine in the short term, the process of corrosion has begun and the problems will only increase from there. Step 1: Turn the computer off Pull the battery out, unplug your computer from the wall and leave it OFF! Step 2: Turn your computer upside down as soon as possible. The best place for the liquid to escape is back out through the keyboard. Turn your pc upside down on a towel and leave it for a few hours. Step 3: Take it to your local trusted computer repair center (upside down if possible). They will disassemble your laptop and assess how much liquid has made its way in and how much damage has occurred. They may recommend that all data is transferred off the hard drive in case the computer can’t be repaired. If you are quick enough, you may save your computer. In some laptops, there is a protective plastic lining under the keyboard which helps to prevent things like crumbs getting into the important bits. If only minimal liquid was spilt, this lining can minimise damage.

Isn’t it great when things just work? Isn’t it even better when they’re free? URL-2.net Have you ever wanted to pass on to someone a URL (that is, a website address) that was long, horrible and confusing? Have you ever wished that your business web address was shorter and more user friendly, especially for small business cards and newspaper ads? Just go to www.url-2.net and it couldn’t be simpler! Type, or copy and paste, your long web address into the textbox and *BAM* - within seconds you will be given a new, shorter version, which is far handier for advertising and passing via email and social media. For example, if your online bookings page is where you want to send people, but the web address is http://www.my-site.com.au/online-bookings.html then why not shorten this, for free, to something like http://url-2.net/bookme SunshineCoastDeals.com.au There’s plenty of ways to get a bargain on the Internet, but no one likes having to drive down to Brisbane every time they buy online. Well now there’s Sunshine Coast Deals, a locally based website that’s bringing savings of 50 - 90 per cent on local products and services. This is great for the consumer, but just as amazing for the seller, as it is 100 per cent free for a business to advertise its deals through the site. What’s more, bulk sales to an online audience can put cash straight into your pocket, rather than costing you money at every turn for no real result. This site is launching soon so get in early!

Market day a success!
Last week, Glasshouse Country Care Activity Centre was buzzing with excitement as a number of our local business houses were selling their wares to the people who came along to Market Day. The eager customers were mainly buying Christmas gifts, but it was noted that a few were buying goodies for themselves. Glasshouse Country Care would like to thank the numerous business houses that made this day special for the elderly and disabled people who regularly attend the Centre. All staff would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the individuals and businesses of the Beerwah/Glass House area who have contributed to making Glasshouse Country Care Inc a better place for our aged and frail. From the management committee of Glasshouse Country Care Inc, we wish you all the joy of this Christmas season and a very happy 2012.

Community Group Updates Landsborough Museum
Mooloolah Community Centre
The Society is seeking funding for story boards to celebrate the lives of both Wm Landsborough and Stan Tutt OAM and we need support from the community. Please send letters of support to the Secretary by December 18. We need to raise 25 per cent of the cost, so if you would like to donate a small amount to the project we would be most grateful (donations of $2.00 or more are tax deductible). Next year we will be calling for volunteers to assist with cleaning and treating a large number of stored objects, please contact us if you can help. Landsborough Museum will be closed from December 19 – January 4. We wish everyone a happy Christmas and hope to see you in the New Year.
Volunteers from the Mooloolah Community Centre celebrated their achievements for 2011 at a Christmas lunch last week. We look forward to celebrating the year with everyone at our big community Christmas party happening this Friday. All are welcome to join in the fun with live band ‘City Limits’, jumping castle, food, fun, Santa and Christmas cheer. This year the Community Centre has grown in leaps and bounds. The Op Shop has been open four days a week (9.00am - 1.00pm) and has developed into a fantastic community asset, and the Family Fun Day hit record crowd and market stall numbers. The Community Garden is growing not just with plants, but also the many new raised beds and volunteers. The ‘DugOut’ youth-club has been a huge success run by the TAFE ‘Community Classroom’ program. The Centre grounds are looking well established and cared for, thanks to Norm and others. Our monthly community barbeques have brought new and longer-term members of the community together for a regular fun social event. Thanks to Pete Foster for his contribution of live music throughout the year. The Centre was successful with a number of grants which has helped build on various initiatives such as the infrastructure in the community garden and solar power on the centre roof (Community Gambling Benefit Fund), Broadband for Seniors (Australian Government) and the Christmas party (Sunshine Coast Council). The Community Centre will be closed between December 19 – January 16. We are always looking for new volunteers to the Centre. Anyone interested can contact the Centre on 5494 7822 or admin@mooloolahvalley.net A big thank you to all the volunteers at the Community Centre for their dedication and important contribution to building the community spirit of Mooloolah and surrounds. The Community Centre is fortunate to have such great support from the local businesses, particularly Ken and the team from White's IGA, Sunshine Coast Council, and Renee Grant who has made a massive difference in so many ways, and now is moving on to new things. Thank you to all the volunteers, business and government supporters and people who come to the Community Centre. We wish all supporters and volunteers a happy holiday season and look forward to a great 2012.

Congratulations to local Glass House Mountains artist Pat Pennell who on December 2 won a first prize art award, for the first time. Pat Pennell Pat’s city street scene was judged first in this Alexandra awards section at the annual Pastel Society Of Australia's end of year Pastel awards. This award is donated annually by a very generous lady and artist named Barbara Alexander whose belief is that this is a way to recognise up and coming artists and to give encouragement. Pat also exhibited one of her many pet paintings of 'Roxy', and Una Robinson exhibited her painting titled 'Pink beads' in the actual Pastel Society Awards. The Pastel Society of Australia Sunshine Coast Group meetings will recommence at 7.00pm on the second Tuesday evening of the month at the new venue of the Mountain Creek School.

Asking the questions Since ‘Asking the Questions’ to each of the candidates a few weeks ago I have spoken to some of the candidates and they have informed me that some questions overlap with State Members areas of responsibility. I realise that a lot of issues do, however who is going to give these and other such issues the best representation and action? Most residents have heard the mirror response ‘we are looking into it’ but we want to know how these candidates will approach these issues.

1. As most of your readers know, I am finishing my degree in Public Relations. Whilst at university I have also taken courses in Urban Regional and Environmental Town Planning. I am not saying I know everything; I have and will always be open to suggestions and comments regarding any issues.
1. I currently hold a range of Financial Planning
My questions are 1. What qualifications and work experience do you have? 2. Many students who walk or ride their bikes to schools in Beerwah have to use uncompleted, unsafe footpaths, what do you think about this issue? 3. What do you think about the car park / set down areas outside of Beerwah State School? I will keep the questions coming next year – in the mean time have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. PS. For all of the readers who have been speculating on whether or not I intend to run for council – I can unequivocally say I am definitely not running!
deliver what is expected, a sound educational background is also essential. A Diploma of Business not only saved and improved my business (Beerburrum Service Centre) but also provided me with a comprehensive bundle of business skills. More recently I completed an Australian Institute of Company Directors Diploma which Council strongly encourages newly appointed councillors to undertake. I'm also proud of my work experience gained through dedicated community involvement including ‘New Festival Beerwah’; Glasshouse Country Business Chamber; Beerwah Community Pool Fundraising; Bankfoot House; Beerwah Ambulance Committee; Campervan and Motorhome Club of Australia; Rotary including Beerwah Interact Club and Vocational Director. I was successful in obtaining State Heritage Listing of Anzac Avenue, Beerburrum, initiating historical signage and publishing my latest work, a history of Anzac Avenue, Beerburrum. 2. In August, Roland Munyard flagged this issue at the Building Beerwah workshop and presented a detailed mud map of the dysfunctional footpath system within this precinct. ‘Ask a local,’ I say. If I am elected Roland will be the first person I contact. 3. It would be irresponsible of me to make an unqualified comment, but several years ago I did however use this carpark as a parent and an employee and was involved in various P&C discussions regarding its location and safety challenges. I expect that the approved upgrade of Peachester/Old Gympie Road intersection will trigger adjunct activity. 14

DECEMBER 14 2011
before I was a teenager, washing tall bottles after school and then on Saturday morning my father would fill the bottles with draft beer I would cap, wrap in news paper and put into the cold room to be sold during the week. I completed an electrical apprenticeship after completing junior. I then began my first business as an Electrical Contractor, continuing this for the next 38 years. I completed my last qualification in 2009 updating my Workplace Trainer and Assessing qualification gained in 1990, to a Certificate IV in Workplace Training and Assessing, keeping my skill up to date. The bit in the middle, well, if you wish to find out more about Bob’s skills you will need to visit my website www.bobmclean-div1.com.au. 2. I am aware of this walking and cycling issue. The past 10 years have seen considerable improvement made, in particular along Peachester Road. The access to Beerwah Primary is much safer now. When the traffic control is installed on Peachester Road this access will be much safer. Roberts Road is being assisted by a police presence in the school zone. The students also need to use the facilities responsibly. I will continue to work as Cr Anna has, to allocate funding to continue to improve the pathways and cycle ways in Division One. 3. The area is congested at school start and finish time. This is a state road, maintained by council. Community engagement is necessary to manage this area.
2. There needs to be more paths to improve the infrastructure for students and to entice others to start riding/walking to school. There is a severe lack of paths to schools, and I am surprised a student has not yet been killed whilst riding or walking to school. The new road that by-passes Beerwah’s centre should have been designed with a cement path placed beside it. Numerous times have I seen motorists dodging kids on scooters and skate boards whilst doing their morning or afternoon shopping trips. When it rains, paths through Turner Park become submerged and muddy, making it hard to walk/ ride through the area, forcing students onto the busy road. 3. It was only recently I took a drive past Beerwah Primary school during pick-up time. It was a mess. This is not the drivers fault; it is the lack of car-parks and directional signage. The issue of large trucks using this road at the same time poses an even greater danger. The driveways and car-parks need to be upgraded. And even looking at implementing a slip lane off Peachester Road for pick-up and drop-off to ease the bulk of traffic from Old Gympie Road.
have a freight train of development and change headed towards our division. We have three to five years to shape our future and build modern country townships that won't become urbanised or overshadowed. I'm the only candidate with 17 years experience working with or in local councils across Queensland. I've seen how inexperienced councillors struggle to learn how a $600 million institution operates. It usually takes three budget cycles before they become effective. My experience includes 10 years as a senior planner/coordinator with Moreton Bay Council. The mantra I set for my team was ‘we're here to make things happen’ and I'm proud of our achievements including $43 million worth of infrastructure on the ground. I have also spent seven years in small business as a cultural industries consultant, and have been a state manager of Phillips Data Systems, a commercial property manager, president of Caloundra Chamber of Commerce, and an advisory board member for the university for 15 years. I understand how councils, corporations, and small businesses work. 2. I actually wrote to Council about this 10 years ago as we wanted to ride with our children to school. Some pathways were made but remain incomplete. It’s time to sort out our pathways and linkages. 3. The primary school has outgrown its carpark design. The steep hill means it’s a difficult site with one tight exit onto a busy intersection. It’s time to review the design in cooperation with the school and Education Queensland.
qualifications and am RG146 Compliant, as well as working towards my Masters in Financial Services. I am a JP (Qual) and qualifications in management, communication, and human resource management. I have served time in the Army Reserve, and I have worked for the ANZ Bank up to Branch Manager, as well as Suncorp from insurance agent, financial planner to business planner. I have run the family businesses and currently I am a self-employed business owner. I have been accountable in small business to large corporations, for both people and decision making process.
2. It is unacceptable and we need someone who isn’t linked to the last four years to bring this to solution. On the latest announcement of a path from Beerwah to Australia Zoo, it sounds good but I have a concern on the ground that this proves that the current Council’s priorities are out of order. I believe that more in and around Beerwah would have been a better use; after all on a hot day how many tourists will walk the kilometres, then dodge traffic on Steve Irwin Way? 3. Again unacceptable. The poorly set out parking,
set down and pick up has buses traverse the gauntlet, through car parking that has one side reverse in and the other reverse out. It has a drop and go, but does not specify the time limit. Then the two exits, offer the peril of merging with limited vision into traffic. The need for improvement, strengthened by safety for children, should be urging action now. We need a Councillor who can build a Coalition with the State Government to deliver this and many other key projects for our community as the current regime have failed to adequately do. www.gcnews.com.au

Disillusioned and disgusted
This is the only description for the antics of our politicians and the associated bureaucratic system. We have some 230 bureaucrats who, up to now, had salaries higher than the head of our country who has the ultimate responsibility for this country's welfare. Where has common sense gone? We had the Peter Slipper fiasco at the close of the 2011 parliamentary session thus stifling any discussion until resumption in 2012. We now have massive increases in Federal parliamentary salaries. Again no discussion even possible until 2012. What's with this Remuneration Tribunal, who are the members of this Tribunal, what is the cost to us of these member’s salaries, and what is the overall cost of the Tribunals department? We need answers! Why is our PM's base salary greater than the salaries of the respective PM’s / leaders of the world’s largest nations? If I am correct I believe that the salary levels for State Follies is based as a percentage of Federal Pollies salaries. So we can expect further increases at state level in the near future - and what about local government salaries? Where does it end? A groundswell of public backlash needs to come to the fore to bring home to our Follies the simple fact that we are not impressed by their antics. Your voices need to be heard, so let's hear your opinions. J.T. Weeks, Beerwah
Despite all the protests and concerns, Council has ignored the resident’s wishes and approved the Optus mobile phone tower in Tytherleigh Avenue, Landsborough. Cr McKay is quoted as saying that good planning grounds to disallow this type of development are just not there. How is it then that under the previous Caloundra City Council a proposal for a tower over the fence from this one and two others in Landsborough were refused? Doesn’t the Council take into account the Federal Communications Act which says a tower can't be built within 500 metres of a school? In their submission to council, Optus admitted that it didn’t comply with the Federal Communications Act re the distance from the school but they didn’t see it as a problem. Therefore it can't be 526 metres from the school- it must be less than this. If what Cr McKay says is correct and there are insufficient planning rules in place to protect residents from developments such as these, what has the council done for the past almost four years? What is the point of having Federal laws in place if local councils can override them? Cr McKay also says the site is in a dense industrial area. Considering the site is surrounded by residences in Dyer Street, Tytherleigh Avenue, Leach Avenue and Caloundra Street, this can hardly be called a dense industrial area. Cr McKay said the tower won't impact on the local area and will be designed to blend in with surroundings. How can something 35 metres tall blend in? There are other safer places to put this tower. Why can’t council make Optus re-locate this tower to somewhere more suitable? Makes you wonder what we pay the councillors for. It would be interesting to know which councillors voted in favour of allowing this tower. Which ones are willing to put their hands up? A Husband Landsborough
Generous support for book and toy appeal
On behalf of BOQ Beerwah, I would like to pass on our thanks for all the generous donations to our Smith Family Toy and Book appeal. We had so many beautiful donations for this appeal, including at least 20 hand-made wooden aeroplanes and vehicles that a local gentleman, Mr Laurie Brumley had made. We also had a donation of over 25
collectable teddy bears, including clothes, from Ann from Peachester. In all, we received over 200 donations, so thank you to everyone for their generous support. Debbie Willis BOQ Beerwah
No more lies
I too am bitterly disappointed in the RSL at Beerwah (re Letters to Editor, December 7), with their promises of starting a better club for the community after throwing out the previous club earlier this year. And to blame the paper for the lies in their advertisement was the last straw when it comes to their honesty and respect for this community. Anyone knows that any paper will always send you a proof and confirm the date for which the ad appears. They were never getting the machines installed that week and as I write this I am told that they still do not have machines operating so the paper can't have got the weeks mixed up could they? Management of the RSL need to start taking responsibility for their lies, as I don't believe gaming made a mistake either. K Thomas please let your husband know that the Beerwah Hotel has a TAB and will be upgrading the facility in the New Year so he has somewhere to go and place his bets and if you are having another bad day and enjoy the atmosphere of a Club, then go down to Club Glass House, they have 24 Pokies working in their new gaming room and the great staff there are bound to lift your spirits.
Happy with the outcome

As disappointing as it must have been for Mr and Mrs Kayla Thomas (Letters, December 7) we were delighted on making enquiries to staff regarding the no show of advertised services, to have all explained to us, similar to Lea`s note (many thanks), along with the offer of complimentary drinks. We and all our friends will continue to avidly support this great local asset out of respect of serving personnel, past and present, the RSL’s financial support of many local institutions, and the wonderful service received from staff and management. We hope fortune favours Kayla and her husband and trust they find a venue to their satisfaction. The Battered Hat from Commissioner`s Flat

University applications rise The number of people applying for university places had risen by some 10,000 this year compared with 2010. The figures are outlined in the report Undergraduate Applications, Offers and Acceptances 2011. The report showed that 302,472 people applied through Tertiary Admissions Centres for undergraduate positions. It also revealed that females make up some 60 per cent of applicants, which is similar to previous years, the majority of applicants are non year 12 applicants, and demand for engineering courses increased by 7 per cent and for medical courses by 7.5 per cent. The report can be viewed online at: www.deewr.gov.au/HigherEducation/Publications/HEReports/Pages/ UndergradAppOffersandAcceptReports.aspx

From Mark McArdle State member for Caloundra. Phone: 5491 2780 On November 7, I met with the Beerwah Country Women’s Association (CWA) president Donna-Kay Donovan and other members of the CWA, who were concerned about a claim to increase the cost of their lease by a staggering 150 per cent. We were more than happy to help them, and I’m pleased to say that following my meeting with the CWA, Queensland Rail, the owners of the land the Beerwah CWA Hall is situated on, agreed to lower the rent. I am a strong supporter of the CWA and what they do, and together with Ms Donovan, our office wanted to help them even more. We put out the call for anybody who could help with renovations to their hall that’s more than 60 years old, and encourage new members to join their small base of just eight volunteers. The Beerwah CWA is a strong pillar of support in the community that consists of incredibly selfless and good-willed members. Record books show in the 1950s more than 40 members were registered as volunteers. Wouldn’t it be great to get back up to that number? The CWA really is more than just tea and scones; they provide bursaries to local schools, hold fundraisers for those in need, educational workshops and even provide accommodation. They also have younger divisions in branches across the State, and Ms Donovan is hoping to create a young division right here in Beerwah to launch innovative new programs and initiatives. I would encourage as many people as possible to sign up to keep this vital organisation going. There really is no better feeling than helping your community, meeting new people and making friends for life. Anyone who would like to join, or help with the renovation of the hall, can phone 5439 9606. I would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a safe, happy and healthy New Year. Please take care driving on the roads during the holiday period and look after your loved ones. I look forward to seeing many of you in the New Year. www.gcnews.com.au

There are many different things that can help and support you during these times. In my profession as a natural health practitioner, talking is one of the major keys to unlocking and solving or bringing light to a situation. I can help you bring this forward at a pace that best suits you, as it can be very scary addressing issues on your own. This can be done with a consultation and Homeopathic medicine to support you both physically and emotionally. The extras are intuitive Spiritual Gypsy card readings, or hands on healing (Reiki), both of which also give you insights into your life as well as your own self. My gift to you this year is a reduction of costs for Homeopathy treatment, Gypsy Card reading and Reiki. Purchase a gift voucher for a loved one or yourself, for a one hour treatment of any one of the above modalities. Homeopathy is a very systematic and practical approach to healing with natural medicines, treating all illnesses. Hands on Healing (Reiki), is a wonderful way to unwind and relax whilst your body is doing the work, while dream analysis and Gypsy Card readings give you insights into your life and yourself. was a grandson of William and Mary Grigor. Thus Doris’s son, Darren, is a great great grandson of William and Mary. Doris grew up in Maleny where her father was the vet. She remembers last visiting Bankfoot House as a little girl, about 85 years ago. She also remembers that her grandfather, John Grigor, lived in a house at the top of Maple Street in Maleny which he also named ‘Bankfoot’.
Queensland National Trust visit to Bankfoot House Members of the National Trust of Queensland visited Bankfoot House at Glass House Mountains recently. Bankfoot House was established in 1868 by William and Mary Grigor as a lunch stop and staging post for Cobb and Co coaches travelling between Brisbane and the Gympie goldfields. Trust members were given guided tours of the house, dairy, laundry and the bullock wagon shed by volunteer guides from the Friends of Bankfoot House. The house and its treasures enthralled the National Trust visitors. Comments in the visitors’ book included, ‘Unique and well worth seeing’; ‘Must be kept at all costs’; and ‘Nice to see history kept for future reference.’
Doris and Darren were very interested in the work being undertaken to preserve the house and its contents. They hope to return on the open day in 2012. Doris’ cousin, Ethel Burgess of Glass House Mountains, another direct descendent of the founders, chatted away for hours about different relatives. Darren thanked the Friends, commenting ‘It was a wonderful afternoon seeing the old Grigor home, and to have it all explained was terrific.’
Doris is the daughter of John (Jack) Andrew Grigor and wife Jessie Moodie. John Andrew Grigor

Welcoming back Thomas and Friends for summer fun Holidaying from the Island of Sodor, the famous blue tank engine rolls into town for Australia’s biggest Thomas and Friends event, Day out with Thomas 2012 at The Workshops Rail Museum from December 26 to January 29. Young engineers can let off some steam with hands-on activities in the Thomas play pit such as designing a Thomas track and getting creative at the Thomas creation station. The event also features a miniature train ride and bouncy castle, tickets cost $3.00 per person and are purchased after entry to the Museum. Much bigger than the Tidmouth sheds on the Island of Sodor, tour the real railway workshops and see firsthand the restoration and maintenance of powerful steam locomotives. Enclosed footwear is required for the tours and they leave at regular intervals throughout the day. The Workshops Rail Museum is part of the Queensland Museum. For further information and ticket prices, phone 3432 5100 or visit www.theworkshops.qm.qld.gov.au
Over the past 10 years, December artist of the month, ceramic artist Enid Wilkinson, has been able to pursue her passion for the arts and has developed a distinctive and imaginative style of hand built figurative works which seduce and delight with their quirkiness and vibrancy. Enid uses clay as a medium, loves textured surfaces and experimenting with glazes to produce forms that find their niche sitting amongst plants in her garden. Visit Enid at Artists on the Green, Sunday, December 18 on the Village Green in Montville, 10.00am – 3.30pm. The Christmas market is an event not to be missed with artists showcasing original artwork for Christmas. Purchase a one of a kind for Christmas, large or small. Speak with the artist and find out the inspiration behind that special gift. To be part of this unique event or for enquiries www.artsconnectinc.com.au
Aussie World takes the plunge Aussie World is opening yet another new attraction and this one is the first of its type on the Sunshine Coast. The new ride is a log flume ride called The Plunge with not one but two steep climbs and drop-offs. Riders climb aboard hollowed-out logs that are propelled by flowing water through a waterway before climbing upwards then plunging down a ramp at great speed.....twice! Riders and spectators will be treated to a water splash created by the downhill momentum of The Plunge. An entertaining way to cool off on a hot Queensland day! The Plunge is a thrilling ride, opening to the public last week, just in time for the December holiday period. General Manager David Thompson said The Plunge is the third new ride at Aussie World following the successful opening of thrill ride Redback and Giant Slide earlier this year. “These three new rides complete an expansion project that has cost more than two million dollars and has reinforced Aussie World as a major player in the tourism industry on the Sunshine Coast,” he said. “This year, due to the park expansion, we have seen record numbers coming through our gates, proving that Aussie World has an exceptional product and we will continue to remain affordable and offer extraordinary value for money.”
Your chance to experience The Plunge for free!
GCNews and Aussie World have one family pass to Aussie World, valued at $99.00, to give away to a lucky family (two adults, two children), just in time for the school holidays! Br John OGS Glasshouse Country Anglican Church We are now well and truly into that season of the Church year known as ‘Advent’. The season comprises the four weeks of the year prior to Christmas, at which time we will celebrate and remember God’s taking on of humanity in the form of his Son Jesus Christ. The word ‘Advent’ however also refers to Christ’s ‘second coming’ at the end of history and the season is a time of great expectation. As Christians, it’s often hard for us to understand Jesus' delay in his second coming. God's time clock certainly seems out of sync with ours as young Jimmy learned one day while laying in a freshly mowed paddock of rye grass on a warm spring day. Staring at the clouds Jimmy soon began to ponder God. "God? Are you really there?" Jimmy said out loud. To his astonishment a voice came from the clouds. "Yes, Jimmy? What can I do for you?" Seizing the opportunity, Jimmy asked, "God? What’s a million years like to you?" Knowing that Jimmy couldn’t possibly understand the concept of infinity, God responded in a manner to which he could relate. "A million years to me, Jimmy, is like a minute." "Oh," said Jimmy. "Well, then, what's a million dollars like to you?" "A million dollars to me, Jimmy, is like five cents." "Wow!" exclaimed Jimmy, getting an idea. "You're so generous God,” said Jimmy, “can I have one of your five cents?" God replied, "Sure thing, Jimmy! Just a minute!"

Advent is about God identifying with the human situation. God came in the form of human flesh and lived among us. Saint Paul worded it this way in 2 Corinthians 8:9, ‘For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that through his poverty you might become rich’. Because God lived among us, there is no feeling, no experience that you can encounter that God doesn’t understand. He went through the loneliness of Gethsemane, the betrayal at the Mount of Olives, the weeping at the death of his friend Lazarus, the temptations of the wilderness, the joy of the wedding at Cana and the pain of seeing his mother suffer while he was on the cross. Don’t tell me that God doesn’t understand! No matter what you’ve encountered; God’s been there first. So this Advent devote some time to getting ready for the return of Christ. Jesus put it this way, ‘what I say to you I say to all: Keep Watch!’ Keep watch. Be prepared for his return. The incarnation of Christ that first Christmas was a rescue mission. It was a rescue mission and a salvation mission. How prepared are we for the coming of Christ? Amidst our shopping and card writing, the seemingly endless round of break ups and Christmas parties, are we ‘Keeping Awake’? Be alert! God is coming on a salvation mission! Blessings to you all this Advent and Christmas. GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY

REIQ managing director Dan Molloy said. The rate adjustment was also in response to the latest inflation gauge which showed inflation was well and truly contained, he said. “The TD Securities-Melbourne Institute monthly inflation gauge yesterday showed that in the 12 months to November inflation rose 2.1 per cent, which is at the bottom of the Reserve’s inflation target band of 2 to 3 per cent,” he said. “The worsening economic situation in Europe, coupled with these benign inflation readings, means the Reserve could safely reduce the cash rate towards a more neutral setting, particularly since its next meeting is not until February.” The financial situation in Europe remains tenuous at best with leaders tipped to meet later this week in an attempt to agree to a broader rescue plan for the region. However, if the situation can’t be resolved successfully, Mr Molloy said, the Reserve Bank of Australia still has plenty of room to move by lowering rates further.
Co
The decision by the Reserve Bank of Australia to cut the cash rate by 25 basis points to 4.25 per cent last week was the right one given economic conditions at home and overseas remains finely balanced, according to the Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ). The Queensland property market continues to be impacted by low buyer confidence and the November rate cut did not really change this attitude. According to the REIQ, this latest rate adjustment will ease the burden on home owners and prospective property buyers slightly, but it must be passed on in its entirety by all lenders and must be followed up by further Reserve Bank action in the New Year. “With the Federal Government’s continued determination to record a budget surplus now dependent on spending cuts, only the Reserve Bank remains capable of stimulating spending and restoring some confidence to the market,”

Demand increases for ‘best of both worlds’ townhouses Townhouses are becoming an increasingly popular choice of housing for Queensland buyers, renters and investors according to the latest Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) research. The REIQ September quarter median unit and townhouse report found that about 20 per cent of all unit sales over the quarter were townhouses. The growth in the development of townhouse complexes over the past 10 years has helped to change the landscape of Queensland’s residential property and rental markets, according to the REIQ. Analysis of Residential Tenancies Authority (RTA) data shows that the number of three-bedroom townhouses being rented in Queensland has increased more than 80 per cent in a decade. By comparison rented twobedroom units have grown by only two per cent and rented three-bedroom houses by just three per cent over the same period.
MANAGE YOUR MONEY
And when it comes to buying a townhouse, people are often attracted by the ‘best of both worlds’ characteristic of this type of housing. “Townhouses are usually priced midway between houses and units so they are the best of both worlds really. They are attractive to buyers who desire a larger property, which is still affordable, but is located closer to the city or entertainment precincts,” REIQ managing director Dan Molloy said. “Many people, whether they are buyers or renters, still want a three-bedroom property but don’t want the hassle of general home maintenance such as spending your weekend mowing the lawn or weeding the garden, so townhouses can offer the perfect solution.” While two bedroom units and three or four bedroom houses remain the backbone of Queensland’s rental stock, the continued development of townhouses will likely underpin growth in this sector of the rental and sales markets in the years ahead.

Good debt, bad debt. Debt can either be your most powerful ally or your worst enemy. It’s up to you to be the master or the servant to debt. The key is understanding the difference between ‘good and bad debt’. Good debt is debt on ‘assets’ or things that make you money. For example, business loans, education loans and loans on investment property are all things that are intended over time to make you money, not just swallow it up. This debt gives you the power of leverage: it means that you can use a little of your own money and a lot of someone else’s money to buy an asset that you get the full appreciation and returns on.

GOWINTA FARMS www.gowinta.com.au
I always struggle to understand why our mining industry attracts the bulk of media and the public’s attention, when farming is about to go through its most rapid growth spurt in Australia's history. On Wednesday, November 30, I was invited to participate in the Queensland Food Policy launch at the CSIRO centre in Brisbane. It was at this launch of the ‘Food for a growing economy’ by the Queensland Government that I learnt the food value chain in Queensland back in 2008 was worth a staggering $18.7 billion and supported 267,000 Queensland jobs. Forecast figures reveal Queensland is on track to increase its food value to $40 billion by 2020. Question is, where is all this food going to come from? While promises from both sides of State Government are being made towards supporting farming productivity in Queensland, the mind boggles at where this talent pool of farmers and investment dollars will come from? I don't think farmers are alone when they say ‘it's bloody hard to make a dollar these days’. But one thing's for sure, it's not going to get any easier as increases to wages, superannuation and taxes, including the carbon tax come into effect in 2012. The State Governments solution to helping Queensland's food industry reach its forecasted $40 billion target is a $2 million funding program (the Food Innovation and Productivity Incentives program). To a potential $40 billion state industry, that’s a mere 0.00005 per cent investment. Well done to the Queensland Government, we know where your priorities lie.
Hi, just thought I’d send in this photo of Elaine’s wonderful Oncidium sphacelatum orchid (also called Dancing Lady). It has the most flower spikes I’ve ever seen. Jan Cheal, Beerwah
Thanks Jan What an amazing specimen. I thought mine was pretty good – but this one takes the cake! What a beautiful display for the festive season. Brownie
If any other readers have something spectacular flowering in their garden next year that they would like to show off – why not send it in to me and I can try and include them in my column.

Blood, Sweat and Cheers Glasshouse Country Bowls Club
Sports Results for week ending Sunday, December 11 Thursdays Open Pairs results are as follows; Morning Session: Winners were Stu Wilson and Kelvin Brady on 30. Winners of the highest score in the second game were, Bob Coxon and Kerry Capern on 20. The Afternoon Session winners were Brian Saunders and Graham Turton on 33. Winners of the highest score in the second game were Phil Siggers and Kerry Capern on 17. Saturday Social Bowls had 10 members play. For fun they played the men against the women. The men won, only just! Saturday Night saw the members gather for their Di Hunt Ladies A Singles Annual Dinner and Presentation Night and the Chairman, Terry Little took on the role of MC. The dinner started with platefuls of king prawns, followed by a hot or cold buffet. Some of us had both the hot and cold buffet. Considering the volume of talk and laughter, all the members were having a really enjoyable night, must have been the prawns, it was really great. After dinner were the presentations. The bowlers wish to thank Club Glass House and the Brett Standring Mens B Grade Winner staff for putting together a good night. Table set up was great, food was excellent. A fun evening was had by all. Other than one more game, this is it for the year. Bowls gets under way from January 11.

Thanks for the good turn-out at the AGM, all positions were filled. I would like to congratulate the old committee for its excellent work for the last few years, especially Ken Fullerton, our past president who has put in a lot of time and hard work to the club (and still will with other duties). For me personally I have large boots to fill to gain the same respect he has earned performing this job over his time in charge of our great club. Also I would like to welcome on board Tracey and Andrea in their new roles with the club. President Frank Doonan, vice president Michael Topfer, secretary Jo Black, treasurer Tracey Bonato, registrar Paula Groer, promotions officer Andrea Poole. We also would like to welcome onboard a new sponsor for the next season. Matilda Service Station is our new sponsor for first division best and fairest award for all our home games, thank you very much for being part of our club. Remember to support all of our great sponsors, Amestos Transport, Beerwah Hotel, Landsborough Hotel, The Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club, North Pine Motors and Glasshouse Chiropractic Clinic. We are still looking for anyone that might be interested in coaching our first division women’s team, please contact Frank on 0419 757 584. Don’t forget senior pre season training has commenced on Thursday nights from 7.00pm, any male 17 and over is welcomed and ladies 16 and over as well. If you cannot make it to training but are interested in playing next season contact Terry Jones on 0418 721 456.

Beerwah Ladies Golf
Contributed by Jenny Kelly (November 26 report was delayed because of email glitch)
November 26 saw 29 players competing in a Stroke event for a trophy donated by Jill Downes. This was nicely won by Sonia Kenway with a score of 70 nett, closely followed by Jackie Collinson with a 71 nett. Hope Hannah had her radar tuned in and almost scooped the pool of NTP's taking out 2, 5, and 16. Jill Downes got the 18th. The ball rundown went to 77 nett. We kicked off summer with 72 players competing in a 4BBB Stableford for trophies donated by Glenys Parry and the club. To make the game a little more interesting, the girls hit off the men's tees. This made the course a bit longer than usual, so the winning score was a credit to the two girls who finished the best. Deb Carlton is one of our new members and what better way to start her golfing experience at our great club. Deb teamed up with Deb Cody for a great total score of 43 points. Monica Dangerfield and Jen Kelly came in runners up on 40 points, with Rosemary Collins and Shirley Cooper getting second runner up with 39 points. NTP's were Shirley Cooper on 2, Cath Cherry on 5, Barb Whitfield on 16, and our visitor Di Pavich had a great shot into 18 for the approach and a birdie. The ball rundown went to 36 points. Last Thursday saw the end of the Thursday Ladies Golfing calendar for 2011. Even though the wet weather threatened to disrupt the day, 67 hardy girls braved grey skies to play a Stableford Alliance and were rewarded not only by staying dry, but even some lovely sunshine at times. After playing nine holes, the girls gathered in the club house for their Annual Christmas Party. The knees up is funded by the sale of raffle tickets throughout the year, so the ladies can relax and let their hair down. The winners of our eclectic and running competitions were announced along with the winners on the day. The International Bowl is the lowest nett score for three rounds during June and July. Division 1 was won by Gundie Turpie, Division 2 by Jennifer Kelly and Division 3 by Carol Fraser. Golf Queensland Brooch is played over six Stroke rounds with Division 1 taken out by Sue Williamson, Division 2 by Vikki Bartel and Division 3 Kathy Stern. The Stroke Eclectic was won in Division 1 by Sonia Kenway, Division 2 by Shirley Cooper and Division 3 by Kathy Stern. The Stableford Eclectic was won by Cathy Stone in Division 1, Kaye Jansen in Division 2 and Julie McMahon in Division 3. The Putting Competition is an aggregate of the seven best rounds and was won by Noelene Annakin. Our final annual event is the highly contested ‘Gobbler’, (a gobbler being any shot from off the green which goes in the hole). This much prized trophy was won again this year by Cathy Stone. And now to the winners of our Christmas Breakup Competition. Teams of four girls played for hampers full of Christmas goodies. Brid, Teresa, Julie and Glenys took out the day with 46 points. They were closely followed by Pauline, Keithia, Carol and Kim on 44 points. Third spot was Sue Williamson, who couldn't be in our photo, Barb, Monica and Jen. NTPs were Andrea, Meg, Ruth Parish and Ruth Bowie on number two and Sue Williamson, Barb, Monica and Jen on number five. Our NAGA trophy, for the team who tried the hardest on the day was Heather, Lady Di, Gloria and Vikki. After the presentations were over for another year, the girls enjoyed another great Christmas party with lots of singing, dancing and merry making. Until next time, stay safe and good golfing.
Runners up were Pauline Mason, Keithia Thomson, Carol Cork and Kim Thode

Tuesday, December 6 saw only six players but a great game with the ladies beating the men. Raffle won by Gwen Henderson. Friday 3 bowl pairs winners were Rob Hall and Alex Thomson and 2nd Nev and Gloria Shaw. Raffles won by Gwen Henderson and Rob Hall. Saturday was party day. Congratulations to all our Championship winners this year. We did not play all our games this year. There were many raffle winners and of course Ede was able to win one. We need all those who are rejoining to pay their membership by December 31 please.
