Hi Everyone...

A few weeks ago, while I was on Facebook, I saw a lovely photo of Aannsha and Barry Jones in Javea, Spain. We brought you the story of this ‘mad’ former Beerwah couple who are on a round the world yachting adventure late last year.

So, not surprisingly they have lots of great photos on Facebook, but this photo was of them catching up for coffee with Sue and Oskar Schlapa, formerly the owners of Pasta d’Vine in Beerwah, who were on holiday in Spain after closing their business and finally retiring!

I couldn’t help but make a comment about how great and clearly relaxed they all looked (maybe I was just a little bit envious). However, seeing them all together on the other side of the world has reminded me just how important it is to appreciate our long and enduring friendships.

Recognising local women of achievement

By Lea Parkes The deck at the Maleny Community Centre was abuzz last Thursday night with many fabulous local women (and a few men) who had come together to recognise both International Women’s Day and the Zonta Club of the Blackall Range’s Women of Achievement Award.

Chair of the organising committee, Ann Koenig, said the club was delighted with the applications they received, and not surprisingly they found it quite a challenge to choose just one recipient, with the 2018 Women of Achievement Award going to Maleny community stalwart Norma McLeod.

Norma has been a long time member of the Maleny Garden Club, holding a number of committee positions before becoming a ‘Life Member’.

She has also worked for the Maleny Show Society, the Maleny Hospital Auxiliary and the Parkinson’s Association.

Norma worked tirelessly on the ‘Walk of Remembrance’ project at the Maleny Hospital, and she also runs flower arranging classes at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre and assists her husband with his Lodge activities.

On the night, Zonta President Julie Bevan acknowledged the contribution that Norma has made to the community, describing her as an unstinting member of our community who volunteers willingly and enthusiastically.

Pam Marsden, who received the inaugural award in 2016 for her community work, and the 2017 recipient, Diane Wilson, who had been a foster parent for more than 100 children, also attended the event and congratulated Norma on receiving this year’s award.

A 160km per hour, 45 minute rail journey from Nambour to Brisbane is on track with the proposal – the North Coast Connect Project – now being shortlisted by the Federal Government as one of three across Australia to proceed to a business case under the $20 million Faster Rail initiative Newly appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Michael McCormack and Minister for Urban Infrastructure and Cities Paul Fletcher made the announcement at Nambour train station last week.

Deputy Prime Minister McCormack said rail investment was a key part of the Australian Government’s $75 billion investment in infrastructure which includes $10 billion for a National Rail Program for urban and regional passenger rail projects and $8.4 billion toward Inland Rail.

Mr Fletcher said the intention of this process was to develop detailed proposals for faster rail services between major cities and surrounding regional areas to increase connectivity, speed or frequency of rail services, giving more people the option to enjoy the lifestyle of a regional town while being able to access the deep job market of a capital city.

The proposal not only encompasses upgrading the main train line from Brisbane to Nambour, but also the much-anticipated spur line from Beerwah to Maroochydore, called the CAMCOS corridor.

Federal Member for Fairfax Ted O’Brien said the North Coast Connect proposal would create new communities and create jobs growth between Brisbane, Moreton Bay and the Sunshine Coast.

“The North Coast Connect proposal comprises upgrades to both the existing North Coast Line and a new rail line

from Beerwah to Maroochydore. These changes would ease congestion and improve road safety on the Bruce Highway while increasing freight movements to Far North Queensland,” Mr O’Brien said.

“This proposal would reduce travel time from two hours to 45 minutes, increase capacity and revitalise historic railway towns such as Nambour.”

There will be other significant tangible benefits for local residents, according to the local Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace.

“Not only will the project revitalise the Sunshine Coast in terms of local jobs and faster and better public transport, but it will be a boost for living standards,” he said.

“Locals will have better access to getting and keeping city jobs with higher earning capacity without sacrificing our way of life with long commutes.

“This will improve the desirability of Sunshine Coast property, boosting the local real estate market. And it will bring visitors and tourists into our local towns, increasing local tourism.”

State Member for Glass House Andrew Powell is buoyed by the announcement.

“This announcement is a game-changer! It has the potential to bust congestion, transform our communities (whilst respecting their heritage) and offer exciting new public transport options,” Mr Powell said.

“I encourage every Coast resident to jump on board with the project too!”

Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson said the North Coast Connect submission supported Council’s continued advocacy for better connectivity between the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane.

Fast facts “This is a great step forward,” Mayor Jamieson said.

“We now have an opportunity to examine and evaluate a new model for connecting major population centres within the region and, in turn, better connecting the Sunshine Coast with Brisbane City and the Moreton Bay region.”

The business case will be being driven by a business consortium including KPMG, Smec, Urbris and Stockland. With the Federal Government committed to part funding the business case, the rest of the money will be sought from others – including the State Government, local government and private enterprise.

When asked how much Council was willing to put on the table, no firm commitment was given.

“All tiers of government will be expected to contribute towards the business case development.

The contributions are yet to be finalised,” a Council spokesperson responded.

It appears that the State Government has already decided what they’ll contribute… no money but another study.

In a statement from Mark Bailey, Minister for Transport and Main Roads, he said that the State Government welcomed the announcement and looked forward to working with the consortium, but they have already generated a business case for their Beerburrum to Nambour rail duplication project.

“The Palaszczuk Government will provide this business case to the North Coast Connect consortium as an in kind contribution,” Mr Bailey said.

The business case is expected to be delivered over the next 12-18 months and will then proceed to independent assessment by Infrastructure Australia.

The North Coast Connect Consortium will explore upgrades to the rail connection between Brisbane and Nambour as well as a new rail spur to Maroochydore. This new and upgraded infrastructure would facilitate higher speed passenger rail services between Brisbane and the regions of Moreton Bay and the Sunshine Coast.

Travel times could be reduced from approximately two hours to 45 minutes between Nambour and Brisbane and the trip between Brisbane and Maroochydore is also expected to take 45 minutes.

The business case undertaken by the North Coast Connect Consortium would assess three stages of work, covering corridors between Brisbane, Nambour and Maroochydore: Stage 1a – involves an upgrade of 64.5km of the North Coast Line from Brisbane to Beerburrum through curve easing, level crossings removal and systems upgrade.

Stage 1b – involves an upgrade of 40km of the North Coast Line from Beerburrum to Nambour through curve easing, level crossings removal and systems upgrade. This work would include duplication of the North Coast Line which is part of a Queensland Government proposal currently subject to an Infrastructure Australia assessment.

The Australian Government would require the North Coast Connect Consortium take into account the Queensland Government’s proposal.

Stage 2 – involves a new passenger rail service comprising a spur line with 40km of new track from Beerwah to Maroochydore, including several new stations.

Benefits • Improve travel time reliability (from two hours to 45 minutes) and increase capacity.

• Increase comfort and amenity at stations and on new trains capable of reaching speeds in excess of 160km/h, with new stations created on the Beerwah to Maroochydore line.

• Maximise safety for the travelling public on both rail and road including the Bruce Highway.

• Minimise the impact of transport on the environment.

• Revitalise the historic railway towns.

• Improve connectivity to the surrounding region through integrating public transport services with improved rail services.

• Unlock housing supply and job growth between Brisbane and the regions of Moreton Bay and the Sunshine Coast, the third most populated region and the fastest growing region in Australia.

Casino plans need a community forum Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace has called on Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson to join him in facing local residents at a ‘town hall’ style community meeting to discuss Council’s plans for a casino in the SunCentral CBD site.

Mr Wallace, who has gathered well over 5,000 signatures on his ‘Say No to Council’s Casino’ petition since November 29, said the petition demonstrates the overwhelming ground swell of public opposition to the idea of a casino in the SunCentral CBD development that has emerged since the visit of a major gambling corporation to the site last November.

“Mayor Mark Jamieson has unfortunately responded to this grassroots community campaign by personal attacks on me, by trying to confuse the issue and by shifting the blame,” Mr Wallace said.

“However he has not addressed any of the community’s concerns or any of the evidence that demonstrates that a casino would be highly damaging to the Sunshine Coast.

“I believe it is time the Mayor faced up to the public, alongside me, to discuss the real issues here, to listen to the community’s concerns and to tell them why he supports a casino on the Sunshine Coast.”

Mr Wallace is currently discussing possible dates with the mayor for a meeting to be held at the Kawana Community Hall.

Mr Wallace with more than 5,000 signatures on his ‘Say No to Council’s Casino Petition’ I look forward to the opportunity to discuss this issue with him and with local residents. In the meantime, my petition is still open for more signatures,” he said.

Mr Wallace intends to invite academics including the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Neil Mellor, as well as Monash University’s Dr Charles Livingstone to discuss the research around the impact of gambling and casinos.

Country music teenager faces brain surgery DENTURE CLINIC

By Sonia Clark Beerwah Hotel is throwing its support behind a charity fundraiser event for young country music performer and founder of childhood cancer charity ‘The Golden Octopus Foundation’, Keely Johnson on Sunday March 25.

Keely, 19, has faced her own considerable battles with childhood cancer including a number of brain surgeries.

Her own diagnosis formed the catalyst for her to establish ‘The Golden Octopus Foundation’ in 2015, named to represent the eight arms of childhood cancer and raising considerable funds over the years.

Keely has recently had a health setback that will require hospitalisation and treatment as she undertakes another round of brain surgery.

The local Sunshine Coast country music community is banding together to raise funds to assist Keely and her family with the associated costs of treatment and they are inviting the community either come along to the charity event at Beerwah Hotel or, if they can’t make it on the day, to donate to the specially set up GoFundMe page.

The event is being co-organised by another young singer/songwriter, Mason Hope, who has performed previously with Keely and it will feature a swag of local country music performers all donating their time.

Yes, it is hard and always will be – get used to it! I am not a coach, but being consciously positive works for me. If I have a negative approach to something, I can be certain that it will not work out. Think about how you talk about your business; are you positive or negative?

Back to the Chamber – the CCTV issue is not going away, and we will have to make the hard decision soon. Even my ‘Urgent Message’ published a couple weeks ago did not result in hoards of businesses signing up to become members of the Chamber. Is it that nobody cares? Is it that businesses think that they do not need protection? I don’t know, and I don’t understand it.

It’s up to you, get on board and we will continue to upgrade and maintain the cameras.

The first of a series of Maleny Business Networking Evenings for 2018 will be hosted by Brouhaha Brewery in Coral Street on Wednesday March 28 from 5.30pm.

Maleny Commerce President Nicole Hilton said for the past few years Maleny Commerce has invited local business people along to attend monthly breakfast meetings, which have been well attended and provide a good forum for discussion, debate and information sharing.

“Last year the Chamber Committee decided as part of their strategic planning to survey chamber members as well as other local businesses to see what their thoughts and expectations were of how the chamber should be operating into the future,” Nicole said.

“One of the comments made by those completing the survey is that they would be interested in having regular networking events, after work.

“In response to this, the committee has decided to organise quarterly events this year to put it to the test. Committee member Lea Parkes has taken on the task of organising the first event which has been sponsored by Maleny Optical and is shaping up to be a great night.”

Tickets for the event are $15, which will cover the cost of some tasty nibbles supplied by Brouhaha between 5.30pm and 7pm, and drinks can be purchased from the bar.

Invitation Great job, Jac

Community Solutions Apprentices and Trainees held their Annual Awards Night at the Caloundra Events Centre on Friday March 2.

This year was the inaugural award for Disability Trainee of the Year, and the recipient was Beerwah State High student Jac Robins who is undertaking a traineeship with Joyce Mayne, Sippy Downs.

The award goes to a student with a verified disability who has shown how they have overcome adversity to successfully participate in a traineeship.

Wilina Stevens, Business Leader from Community Solutions, said while there was a number of other nominees, Jac’s determination to overcome the challenges he faced both personally and professionally was why he received the award.

“On the first day Jac was anxious and wanted to delay, however now being given additional hours, he has made so much progress with his traineeship,” Wilina said.

“Jac, who is studying a Certificate II in Retail, presents with a friendly and kind nature and warms to many of the elderly customers.

“Some of the local customers from the retirement villages in the area have chosen to come back to the store when Jac is on again so they can be served by him.

“He is tracking well with both his theory and practical component of his traineeship and all parties are proud of Jac and how far he has progressed.

“Jac is a real success story and is often mentioned to other students who may feel nervous or unsure about starting a traineeship.”

Sudden death, Maleny

Following a call out from the Sunshine Coast Police for assistance from the public to identify a man who was located deceased in Obi Obi Creek at Maleny on Thursday afternoon, Police advised on Saturday morning that his identification has now been confirmed.

The death has been determined to be non-suspicious and police will prepare a report for the coroner.

Mikki Doonan, sister of last year’s winner Esmi, won both the $1,000 Roger Jackson Personal Achievement Bursary and the Public Speaking Award of $200 as well, while Elisha Biggs and Taylor Swanson presented quality speeches.

Mikki, who recently returned from a trip to Nepal with Projects Abroad, spoke of her personal experience with a girl of her own age she met in the MSPN New Life Centre for children affected by HIV. Mikki found it hard to justify the stigmatism surrounding the disease and the daily trauma it caused her friend and the audience on Tuesday became emotionally involved during her five minute speech.

Elisha spoke on bullying and Taylor, who was recently selected to play with the Sunshine Coast Wanderers Football Club, spoke on inspiring youth to achieve their goals.

Maleny State High School Principal Deborah Stewart was on hand to support her students in their quest and Mikki was formally recognised at a school assembly on Monday.

This Saturday, March 17, from 4pm the Masterpiece Dance Studios in Beerwah will be hosting a performance of quite a different kind, yes the head shaving kind!

Two of the school’s dance mums, Erin Taylor and Megan Roy, will be going under the clippers for ‘World’s Greatest Shave’.

For Megan this is a cause that is close to her heart having been through her own battle with cancer.

Erin, who is a mum of three young girls, isn’t concerned about losing her long blonde locks for such a vital cause and is keen to share with her daughters the experience of making a difference for others.

Erin and Megan, happy to For those not as brave as Erin and Megan, they are be losing their locks offering the option of having a colour change hair experience (yes, it will wash out) for children and adults for a $2 a head donation.

Both Erin and Megan are registered on the ‘Shave for a Cure’ website where you can donate, and they will also happily take donations up to and including on the day.

Day out at Pattemore House The Pattemore's old dairy bails nestle into the magnificent Maleny Golf Course that has grown around them.

This was once grazing pasture for generations of dairy cattle. A beautiful poem ‘Dimension’ from Judy Bandidt is featured outside Pattemore House and on the right, you can see the Hinterland Poetry Trail.

The Poetry Trail follows the same path trodden daily by generations of dairy folk, from the Pattemores through to the Armstrongs, between their home ‘Fairview’ (Pattemore House) on the far ridge and the bails.

Afternoon tea is always a treat after a walk. The Friends of Pattemore House invite you to visit, wander the path, read the poetry, and see the sculptures. ‘Fairview’ at 15 Porters Lane, North Maleny is open to visitors again on Saturday March 24 between 1pm and 4pm.

The poem relates to the changing of an era from dairy farming to the golf course at what was originally ‘Fairview’, the Pattemore family farm at north Maleny.

Play it safe on the roads these holidays With School Holidays and Easter coming up, many of us will be planning to hit the wide open road and get out of town. Before you leave, make sure your vehicle is safe for the road, make sure you get enough rest and plan ahead. You should always plan your trip before heading off.

The Queensland Police reckon that good preparation for your long trip includes checking your vehicle is safe for the trip, by double checking the following essentials on your vehicle.

1. Tyres– check they are in good condition and at the right pressure including the spare 2. Fluid levels – brake, coolant, oil, clutch, automatic transmission, power steering, water 3. Lights – headlights, high-beams, reverse, indicators and brake 4. Windscreen wipers are working in case of wet weather 5. Battery 6. Fan belt condition and tension

7. Coolant hoses – ensure your coolant does not leak and the hoses are in good condition 8. Tow bar and connections (if towing) 9. Ensure you have enough fuel for the journey.

If you aren’t sure about undertaking any of these checks why not make sure? Book your car into one of our local professionals to give you peace of mind before you travel. Once you are on the trip you should take a break every two hours and don’t drive for more than eight to 10 hours per day.

The Queensland Police also recommend you plan which rest areas and Driver Reviver sites you will pull into on your journey.

During autumn you will find Driver Reviver Stops over Easter on March 30 and 31 and April 1 and 2 and then again at the end of the school holidays from April 13 - 16.

So be prepared, do the right thing while you are on the road, and enjoy the break away from the everyday.

Five newbie driver survival skills When a new driver decides to take a road trip, difficult situations can arise that they might not have experienced while driving on local roads.

Here are five survival tips that NRMA suggests newly minted drivers need to know.

1. Avoid micro-sleeps The first time you drive a long distance trip you’re going to have to learn about how to pace yourself after several hours behind the wheel.

Driving when tired is very dangerous and no amount of coffee, energy drinks, winding down the windows, or turning music up loud will stop you dozing off.

Micro-sleeps can happen in seconds, and if you’ve never done a long trip before, you may not recognize the signs that warn you need to stop.

Every two hours, find somewhere safe to pull over and take a break.

2. Keep your tyre pressure right Having the correct tyre pressure is one of the most important economic and safety issues for your car.

Your tyres will last longer and you’ll save money and fuel because your car will handle more efficiently, and this may even prevent accidents.

Check the vehicle’s manual or the manufacturer’s sticker on the inside edge of the driver’s door for correct pressure settings.

Most service stations have air compressors.

If you’re not sure how to use them, take an experienced driver with you to show you how to check and fill your tyres.

3. Know what to do if your car breaks down As a newbie driver breaking down can be scary, especially if it’s at night, in heavy traffic or in an isolated place. If you can, look for a safe place to pull off the road.

Use your hazard warning lights to warn other traffic especially if your car is causing an obstruction.

If it’s not safe to stay in the car, get yourself and all passengers out of the car safely making sure that you stay away from the road, and that children and pets are kept under control.

If it’s possible, retreat up the bank or find a barrier for safety and comfort, making sure your car is locked first. Once the car is off the road and/or all passengers are safe, call for help.

4. Drive safely in serious weather Australian weather can throw some massive storms at us and you need to prepare for all kinds of driving conditions.

There are lots of things you can do to make driving in bad conditions less stressful. Be clear about your route and check road and weather reports so you’re up-to-date with changing conditions.

If bad weather is forecast, especially situations that might involve flash flooding, consider whether you need to drive at all.

If you do get caught in bad weather, slow down and stay very alert to changing road conditions.

Use lights in low visibility, and if you feel you don’t have the skills to negotiate the conditions, get safely off the road until it passes.

5. Multi-tasking It may sound obvious but driving while juggling hot drinks or food can be dangerous and can cause burns to the driver or even worse, an accident.

If you’re a new driver, try to keep your entire focus on driving and let passengers help you with snacks.

Keep these tips in mind to ensure that you, your passengers and other road users and pedestrians stay safe!

Federal Member for Fisher Say No to Council’s Casino Community Meeting As many of you will know, I have now collected 5,230 signatures on my ‘Say No to Council’s Casino’ petition and more are continuing to roll in. Thank you to everyone who has signed up so far. This petition clearly demonstrates the overwhelming ground swell of public opposition to the idea of a casino in the Suncentral CBD development that has emerged since the visit of a major gambling corporation to the site last November.

Mayor Mark Jamieson has unfortunately responded to this grassroots community campaign by personal attacks on me, by trying to confuse the issue and by shifting the blame.

However he has not addressed any of the community’s concerns or any of the evidence that demonstrates that a casino would be highly damaging to the Sunshine Coast. I believe it is time the Mayor faced up to the public, alongside me, to discuss the real issues here, to listen to the community’s concerns and to tell them why he supports a casino on the Sunshine Coast. I have therefore invited him to take part in a town hall style Sunshine Coast Casino Community Meeting next month.

We are currently discussing possible dates for this meeting and I will give you the full details as soon as they are available. I have also invited some of Australia’s leading academics on this topic to speak to the meeting about the evidence around the harmful impacts of gambling and casinos. I hope to see you there.

Protecting yourself and your loved ones online One in five of our teenage students experienced cyberbullying in the past 12 months, that’s 6,300 young people here on the Coast. Another 17% were exposed to inappropriate content online. The consequences for the development and mental health of our young people can be catastrophic.

We all need to do more to protect ourselves and our children online.

I have been working closely with the Prime Minister to explore what we can do with the major social media companies to improve mental health outcomes for young people. However, I wanted to bring some of this work to our local community, and make sure that Sunshine Coast residents are as informed and protected as possible. I therefore held an eSafety Community Forum last month for 100 people in Fisher led

by Australia’s eSafety Commissioner, Julie Inman Grant.

We heard about the activities and the platforms that are trending among young people in 2018, including live streaming, ‘story’ functions and deletable media. We also learnt about the interactive chat functions imbedded in popular platforms like xbox or Musical.ly, which parents are often not aware give their children the ability to chat unsupervised to adults and other children all over the world. State Member for Glass House Glassies ready to kick off

By the time you see my next column, the 2018 Glass House Small Business Awards, aka The Glassies, will be open for nominations.

Glass House doesn't have large shopping centres or central business districts. It’s our small ‘Mumand-Dad’ business operators that are the lifeblood of our community, so these awards have been deliberately designed to promote and recognise the efforts of our many small businesses and their employees and show our appreciation for their contribution to the wider community.

Following feedback from the Chambers and the public after our last two awards, we will be going back to the original format where there will be a nomination period followed by a voting period.

The nomination stage will open on Monday March 19 and will close on Friday April 6. The final list of nominees will be on my website for you to vote for your favourite businesses and employees from Monday April 16 up until Friday May 11.

There will be four regions this year – Montville Region, Maleny Region, Glasshouse Region and the Moreton Bay Region which takes in the southern end of the electorate. The business and employee in each region with the most votes will pick up a Bronze Glassie. The Silver Glassie will be presented by the Chamber Presidents for true recognition by your peers – to a business and employee in each region that is delivering above and beyond. The coveted Gold Glassie will be selected by me and the Chambers and go to one business and one employee from across the Glass House electorate.

The Gala Awards will be held during Queensland Small Business Week from May 28 to June 1, when all nominated businesses will be profiled and celebrated for their efforts in our region. More details about the event will be shared in coming columns.

I know that each of you would have at least one experience where you have shopped locally and received excellent customer service, so why not seize the opportunity to publicly thank and recognise that small business or staff member and submit a nomination from 19 March.

I will endeavor to visit as many of the nominated businesses and employees during the week between nominations closing and voting opening.

I am excited to get the word out about the Glass House Small Business Awards and assist the nominees in securing votes.

Division 5 - Sunshine Coast Mooloolah meeting Simon Latchford from Visit Sunshine Coast attended our February breakfast catch-up.

He set residents a challenge which will ensure that they all voice their opinion on how to balance tourism and economic benefits with community values and lifestyle.

It is great to see that Mooloolah residents are taking it into their own hands to promote their lovely township to tourist and visitors.

Well done to the Mooloolah community for setting the parameters that will define what their community means to them, how their families will enjoy their village, and how they will partner with other levels of government to deliver their vision.

I am looking forward to working with this vibrant group of people that love their village.

Russell Family Park car park Construction will soon start on the upgrade to the Russell Family Park car park in Montville.

Work will commence after the Easter break with site preparation beginning on March 12.

Full construction will commence in April with a view to being completed around August, weather permitting. This will enable no-impacted business trading over the Easter break.

Maleny Community Precinct The much-awaited extension to the current trails in the northern wetlands in the Maleny Community Precinct will soon be available to the community.

Council is working with Unity Water to finalise directional signage, ensuring safe public access is available to the trails in and around the northern wetlands on the precinct.

New trees for Woombye school I am pleased to inform you that as a part of the Draft Sunshine Coast Street Tree Master Plan priority planting program, Parks and Gardens proposes to plant new street trees to shade and cool footpath networks around schools within the region.

As such, footpaths leading to Woombye State School have been identified as priority planting locations in Division 5.

Parks and Gardens intends to plant during March, however the department will undertake resident consultation prior to the work commencing.

Kids in Action 2018 Congratulations to the seven incredible schools in Division 5 that are on board for this year’s Kids in Action Program.

Beerwah left in the dark After all the work that went into the makeover of Simpson Street, which may I say was long overdue, it is sad to see that nobody remembers to turn the street lights on in Simpson Street at night.

There are several businesses that do night trading in Simpson Street and with the car parks on the other side of the road, patrons to the businesses take their lives in their hands when crossing the pedestrian crossing in pitch darkness.

I have seen many near misses with cars travelling on Simpson Street. I hope it doesn't take a fatality to flick the switch to on.

The local property owners and owners of the business premises pay their rates, yet we are not provided with the essential service of light.

The street lights are LEDs so use very little power, so that mustn't be the reason, Obviously, our local member and council representative don't frequent the area at night otherwise this issue would have been addressed, or maybe they think we are mushrooms and must be left in the dark.

If someone could shine some light on the subject it would be appreciated.

NBN for all I note the predictable response from two of the Towerless NBN for Maleny group members. I would agree that fibre would be the preferred option for all. The reality is that many properties are a long way from exchanges and junction boxes, with degrading copper wire that has been severed by machinery, then rejoined. Towers are the only practical alternative.

I have read letters to the editor citing figures with big numbers and quotes from various studies cherry-picked to look good regarding EMR emissions.

There have also been inaccuracies in previous letters from this source to the editor.

Good luck for your communities, but your views are not those of everyone in the Hinterland.

Bill before parliament I wonder how many readers are aware of the Electoral Funding and Disclosure Reform Bill that is being considered by the Federal Government.

The declared reason for it is to prevent foreign donations influencing elections, but its ambit is so wide that it will catch up your favourite charity.

For example, The Salvation Army both helps the disadvantaged and campaigns for better support, and therefore onerous new compliance rules will apply because their campaigning could be considered "political".

Many charities and non-profit organisations, including the RSPCA, Amnesty, Greenpeace, Anglicare, Getup and The Salvation Army have made submissions against this bill.

So have organisations like the Queensland Law Society, saying the bill may even be unconstitutional in the way it contradicts our implied freedom of speech.

It is easy to find these submissions online at www.aph.gov.au/efdr, so I urge readers to read the one from their favourite charity and then contact our federal minister, Andrew Wallace, and ask him to vote against it.

Re: NBN commentary Mr Luttrell's letter in the GC&M News (28/02/18) takes a shot at my professional life. I regard his letter as more a personal attack than any scientific refutation of what I wrote on radiofrequency and microwaves.

He claims I am "providing much of the opposition" to the coming NBN towers in Maleny and district.

I am one of hundreds of people who want a different approach to NBN tower rollouts.

And we now see last week there are 720 objections from 720 people in Maleny and Beerwah districts who oppose the current planned rollout of towers (GC&M News, 28/02/18). And these are the ones that took the time and met the council deadline.

I tend to write letters as I have a background over the last 35 years in media and publishing. I've been an editor, as well as writing and publishing newspapers and magazines.

If I was a butcher, a baker, a rubbish removalist or a bus conductor, would Mr Luttrell have the same approach criticising me for being a baker and writing letters on radio-frequency? No, I'm sure he would not.

At the top of the ‘You said it’ page, it states that “letters must focus on issues and not be personal attacks on individuals”. Stick with that standard.

Rainforest Discovery Centre reaches first anniversary

One year on from its official opening, the Mary Cairncross Reserve Rainforest Discovery Centre has seen approximately 159,000 visitors come and explore the remarkable interactive displays, experiences and exhibits at the centre!

Breakfast with the Birds sessions, hosted by the Sunshine Coast chapter of Birdlife Australia, is just one of the current events being held at the centre on alternate Wednesdays and Saturdays through to March 31.

Sunshine Coast Council will also be offering their ‘Birds of a Feather’ holiday program, which promises to set imaginations soaring at the reserve with a range of children’s school holiday workshops from April 10-14.

Casino plans need

Great team effort Early March is known for Clean-up Australia Day and this year, with a lot of our usual team having other appointments to keep, I thought we would be lucky to have five volunteers turn up.

Nonetheless our clean-up site went ahead and on Sunday morning when I reached our corner there were 17 volunteers waiting to help. That really brightened my day.

Thank you to everyone who assisted, it was a real pleasure to join a group that had good spirit, enthusiasm and cared about how the countryside looked. We went close to nearly filling our huge bin which was a great effort. Other years it would have been overflowing. As time goes by we are actually picking up less rubbish. McDonalds Glass House sponsored us again by providing cheeseburgers for everyone and IGA Beerwah provided cold water and softdrinks, Baker Packaging Services in Brendale donated good quality gloves and Daleys Turf and Steve Reeves provided vehicles for collecting the rubbish.

Thank you all very much for what you donated. If it wasn’t for your generous support it would not turn out as successfully as it did. It is also really nice to know that the local businesses support what we do.

By Lea Parkes Since Steve Moon, the owner of Vianta Expresso and Wine Bar in Simpson Street at Beerwah, decided to introduce live Jazz and Tapas the venue has built up a loyal following on a Friday night.

So it wasn’t surprising that there were plenty of happy locals when Steve finally knocked a hole in the wall to open up the size of the venue and install a bar and expand the dining area.

Now that Vianta also operates a licensed bar, Steve has decided it is time to start opening on a Saturday night, when they will be serving from a contemporary menu of gourmet burgers and tasting plates and providing some live ‘Indie Rock’ music to enjoy along with premium beers, a great range of wine by the glass, spirits and cocktails made to order.

So this Saturday night, March 17, Steve and his crew will be throwing open the doors till late. They are really keen to give locals another option for somewhere with a cool vibe and good entertainment on the weekend so that locals won’t need to head to the Coast or Brisbane for a night out.

The live music will be supplied by Tony from T-Bone Productions and the first night will feature Sean Fitzgerald from the Gold Coast.

Sean describes his style as acoustic Indie Pop that is influenced by Jose Gonzales, Damien Rice, Ben Harper and Angus and Julia Stone.

And of course, opening on a Saturday night is in addition to Vianta’s current opening hours of 7am - 5pm from Sunday-Thursday and 7am - 9pm on Friday night.

Anne Brown Anne purchased Rosetta Books nine years ago.

She has enjoyed a lifelong love of books and upon moving to Maleny she landed a job working part time at Rosetta’s when it was still located at its original position further up Maple Street. When an opportunity came to purchase Rosetta Books, Anne jumped at the chance!

After relocating the business to the current position in 2013, she added a café area – effectively evolving Rosetta’s from a bookstore to a community hub.

The store is always a busy hive of activity with Book Clubs and other groups regularly meeting for coffee, children hanging out in ‘Kid’ corner and various areas for people to sit and read. Anne credits a lot of the continued success in this digital age to the

community support she receives as well as the amazing team of ladies she has employed. The store has two baristas and five staff that are all women.

A camp to remember

Contributed by Kylie Merola Landsborough State School’s Year 4 students recently headed to Tunnel Ridge Ranch for a two day camp. They experienced a mixed bag of weather, with bright sunshine, thunder, lightning and rain. However, the temperature remained hot throughout their stay.

The days were spent challenging themselves in a number of adventure activities including horse riding, archery, canoeing, leather work and a giant swing. These activities provided the students with a wonderful array of new experiences.

The camp was filled with lots of laughter, yummy food and a great teamwork atmosphere. The students had a wonderful time and brought home memories and experiences that will last a lifetime.

Young writers excel

Contributed by Michelle Lenz Five Mooloolah students, Peter Scott, Olivia Taylor and Lily-Rose Jerebine from Year 6 and Noah Camerlengo and Lilly Christie from Year 4, recently became published authors in the current Write 4 Fun Book.

Students from Year 6 and Year 4 worked with teacher Ms Caroline Kelly in an Extension Writing Club to improve their writing skills.

The students met every week in their own time to explore valuable skills and techniques in language, writing, comprehension and a whole lot more.

These students entered their writing in competition late in 2017 and received an invitation to become published authors.

Easter not far away

The kids at the ‘Take a Break’ Playgroup enjoyed an Easter Egg hunt last week at the Glasshouse Country Uniting Church where they meet on Wednesday mornings from 9am to 11am.

The group of six grandparents who run the group, really enjoy it and are keen to encourage parents who haven’t been along before to come and join them during school terms.

The morning involve plenty of activities for the children including play dough, craft and story time, along with a large assortment of toys to challenge the children.

There is no fee to attend, and there is a bottomless urn of hot water for as many cups of coffee or tea as you need!

Book in now for Vacation Care Fun at Glass House Early Education Centre The Easter Bunny is coming early this year which means that Easter school holidays are just around the corner. The team at Glass House Early Education Centre have been busy putting together the final touches on another awesome vacation care program filled with cool and creative activities, local adventures and exciting excursions.

There will be heaps to keep school aged children happily entertained and many of the activities have been planned using feedback from the children about what type of activities they would most enjoy.

For parents using the vacation care at the Centre for the first time, there is a convenient online enrolment form making the booking process super easy.

Week one of the holidays we’ll zoom off for a ‘wheely fun day’ on Tuesday April 3 with a scooter fun day excursion on the Centre’s Bus to the new Peddle Park at Aura.

Wednesday will be a creative day of painting and planting – making stunning pallet vertical gardens for the Centre outdoor areas. Children will be designing and painting their own pots and then planting herbs and flowers to grow in their own vertical gardens.

Thursday will be a crazy dress up and crazy hair day, and Friday will be filled with messy art activities involving slime, goop and foam!

Week two will commence on Monday April 9 with an exciting day of science inspired activities where children will be making their own Lava Lamp.

Tuesday will be a day out to the movies to see a new holiday release and Wednesday will be a baking and tie dyeing day which always proves to be hugely popular as children love taking home their colourful creations.

Thursday will involve a Centre ‘incursion’ with a visit from the ‘Sand Wizard’ who will be showing the children how to make their own sandy masterpieces and Friday will feature child sized

board games, tree decorations and sun catcher creations.

Monday April 16 is included in the vacation care program as it is ‘School pupil free day’ … so the Centre will be organising a mini sports carnival day travelling by bus to meet with sister centres from Morayfield and Caboolture.

Vacation care offers a great range of activities, excursions and kid focused fun and the activities can appeal to the kids of stay at home as well as working families guaranteed to keep boredom at bay. Most activities are included in the daily fees and CCB discounts are available for activities which incur additional costs (i.e. Movie excursion and Sand Wizard incursion). Orchestra launches 2018 season with fun show

The Sunshine Coast Symphony Orchestra will start the 2018 concert season with a family concert event entitled Musicalé Carnivalé at Caloundra Uniting Church, Queen Street, Caloundra on March 24 at 3pm.

Bringing the traditional and the modern classical experience to the young and the young-at-heart, featured items will include Saint-Saens’ ‘Carnival of the Animals’, ‘The Teddy Bears’ Picnic’, music from ‘Frozen’, and ‘Star Wars’.

Concert goers are encouraged to join in the musical fun by bringing their teddy and dressing up as a favourite movie character. Children can also bring a cushion to be seated close to the action! YogaFest returns

Yoga enthusiasts can experience nearly 50 yoga, health and wellbeing presentations at the annual YogaFest being held at Lake Kawana Community Centre on March 24 and 25.

The festival is suitable for both new and experienced students and enables participants to try new styles of yoga.

The majority of classes, workshops and presentations are 45 minutes in duration so participants can experience many styles and teachers over the two day festival.

Tulipwood Harpullia pendula The Tulipwood is a medium sized rainforest tree found in the Bellinger River area of New South Wales, all the way up to Coen in North Queensland, but it grows well in urban conditions.

Its ability to survive in many different conditions, as well as its attractive bright green, rounded crown and colourful fruit, make it an excellent choice as a street tree or for suburban backyards. When planted this way Tulipwoods usually only grow to about six metres tall.

The fruit of the Tulipwood ranges from red to yellow containing only two seed pods. When the fruit fully ripens, the fruit opens to reveal two opposite rows of glossy black seeds.

Because the Tulipwood is happy in a variety of conditions and environments, it is an excellent choice as a park or backyard tree. Its roots are unobtrusive and non-destructive and it is very low-maintenance.

Friends of Mary Cairncross Association With Charne Turner The first anniversary of the opening of the new Mary Cairncross Reserve Rainforest Discovery Centre (MCRRDC), was celebrated with enthusiasm with 50 volunteers, Sunshine Coast Council staff and local dignitaries including Councillor Jenny McKay and Rotarian Rick Vickers.

It capped a year of excitement as the building itself has won several awards. The local community and travellers from far and wide have had fun being challenged by the many activities within the Centre.

Visitors are now introduced to fascinating facts of the biological wonders of the rainforest, even before their walk. Up to date, handson technologies and static displays help kids of all ages explore the natural world of the rainforest here at Mary Cairncross.

The response to the new Centre from visitors has been overwhelmingly and, in some cases ecstatically, positive. Visitor numbers have steadily increased since the Centre was opened, with around 159,000 visitors over the past 12 months.

There have been some changes recently within Friends of Mary Cairncross Association (FMCA). The long serving President and GC&M News correspondent, Sue Tanner, has relocated to New South Wales and is being sorely missed by the Association.

We wish Sue all the best in her new environment. The members of FMCA thank Sue Morgan for taking on the role of Acting President until the next AGM. She has done so with aplomb and enthusiasm. A new secretary, Helen Jackson, was also warmly welcomed by the members at a recent meeting and Gretchen Evans was thanked for ably acting in this role for the last few months.

Bushland group’s working bee

Contributed by Gordon Reddek The Coochin Creek Bushland Group will be holding its next working bee on Tuesday March 20 from 7.30am to around 10.30am.

Last month impending rain hindered our efforts to target large weeds in the Reserve so this month we plan to return to that task.

We will be targeting woody weeds like Ochna and Choral Berry. And while we are at it, we will extend the ‘Clean Up Australia Day’ effort a bit and remove any rubbish we find in the reserve. A lot is washed in when the Coochin Creek floods.

As always, all are welcome to join us. All participants are advised to wear boots, a long sleeved shirt, long pants, sun hat, and to carry a water bottle.

All equipment required, including tick repellent, will be supplied.

Participation is free, and tea will be served at a suitable time during the morning. We will start by meeting at the gate to Caralan Park, which is at the corner of Emma Place and Caralan Way in Beerwah. For more information please contact me on 0406 638 544.

Clean up appreciated Friends of the Forest/Steve Irwin Way Forest Group would like to thank the wonderful residents of Mooloolah who braved the heat and sun on Sunday March 4 to take part in the Clean Up Australia event.

“We discovered some local environmental champions who dedicated their entire morning to the task, with one local resident singlehandedly collecting a ute tray full of large bags of rubbish from along the roadsides around Eudlo,” said a spokesperson for the group.

Children and parents as well as couples worked as teams in allocated areas and everyone came prepared with hats, sun-smart clothing and water bottles, making it a concerted team effort in support of our environment.

“Special mention to the Mooloolah IGA who donated the barbeque which was enjoyed by most of the participants after the clean-up,” the spokesperson said.

Friends of the Forest/Steve Irwin Way Forest Group “We would like to especially thank Jan Kesby for organising the community event.

“In total there were 15 large bags of rubbish and eight large bags of recyclables collected from around the local neighbourhood, roadsides and public areas.

“We would like to encourage everyone to pick up any rubbish that they see lying around in your own neighbourhood, so it doesn’t end up in our forests and waterways where it causes pollution and potential death to our precious wildlife.”

The Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network, better known as GMAN, were also really pleased with the support they received recently at their Clean Up Australia Day event at Mt Beerwah and Mt Ngungun.

They had over 40 volunteers who collected 40 bags of rubbish, with at least half of this rubbish being recycled at the Beerwah Resource Recovery Centre.

GMAN President Bernard Keays said it was great to see so many people willing to give up their Sunday morning to brave the heat and humidity.

“It was also great to see our local pollies, Federal Member Andrew Wallace, State Member Andrew Powell and our local Councillor Rick Baberowski, coming out and getting down to the job at hand with the rest of us,” Bernard said.

Noticeboard World Day of Prayer Churches of Glasshouse Country gathered together at the Church On The Rise on Friday March 2 to celebrate the World Day of Prayer.

Pastor Aaron Jackson presented the address centred upon the theme ‘All God’s Creation is Very Good’. Over 70 worshippers attended the service which was compiled by the World Day of Prayer Committee in Suriname, a tiny country on the north coast of South America, and which highlighted their faith and struggle to improve the lot of people in this impoverished country.

After the service, all enjoyed a chat and a delicious morning tea. All in all it was a wonderful ecumenical service.

The Glasshouse Country View Club will hold their lunch meeting at 11am on March 21 at the Glasshouse Sports Club where their guest speaker will be Marilyn Cullen, an Anglican Minister, who will talk about her journey along The Pilgrims’ Way in Spain. All players on both lawns appeared to enjoy the chance of a pleasant hit-out in good weather.

Next day, a patient group of players were forced to wait in the shelter of the clubhouse, taking tea, while an early afternoon storm passed over. On play, Frances Harper 7 had the better of a combined team of Helen and Kath Smith 1. Ken pegged out against Donna 14 - 0.

A group of about fifteen clients from The Range Care visited on a very wet Tuesday. Once again, the weather didn’t allow the use of the lawns, but this energetic group had a very pleasant morning tea and then played games inside and on the patio of TS Centaur. A great deal of fun seemed to be had by all, despite the weather.

Draft draws for both the Lochwood and Bray pennants competitions have been published. Apart from the pennants, third and fourth division players might find it fun and fruitful to play in weekenders. Details of these are in the tournament book in the clubhouse. Draft rules of the proposed ladder competition have been circulated.

Club play days are Thursday and Sunday at 2 for 2.30pm. Saturday mornings at 8am there are lessons for beginners on the courts in the showgrounds. For details contact president Vince Carbery on 5494 2193, or secretary Priscilla Vickers 5494 3555.

Contributed by David Hayes Not a lot to report in terms of social weekly games as once again they were all washed out due to the wet weather.

The Hinterland Ladies 1 side, at home against Woombye was a washout. The 2 side played away at Yandina and the pairs had a win with the triples going down by 1 shot. Overall Glasshouse had a win. Well done ladies.

The men put in a much improved performance this week but unfortunately went down on 3 rinks. The highlight was the 3 Bowl Pairs game with Grant Podmore and Robi Dean having a fantastic win 2218. Some absolutely beautiful bowls were played.

We hope to place an order soon for the new jackets, so if you would like one please let our secretary know. The men’s pair’s nominations are open and close in just over a week.

Witta Tennis

Contributed by Maree Hooley Wagtails were looking forward to their match with Maleny Racqueeters on Wednesday but unfortunately the rain would not go away so it was a tied game.

Wildcats, the weather played another major factor in the match between the Wildcats and Caloundra Skylarks. The wind was horrendous. No one knew where that ball was going. Pauline, Stacey, Libby and Jenie mastered the wind and rain and were victorious at the end of the day. Final score was 5-3 sets, 38-33 games.

Whistlers, unfortunately had to cancel the match on Friday due to wet weather. Wompoohs and the Wikings were due to play each other on Sunday at Witta however the game was cancelled due to wet weather.

Friday March 9: The Friday Chook-Run Competition was held over 9 holes of golf with first place going to Peter Gilbert. Runner-up was Mike Hallan and third place was a tie between Tom Kennedy and Robin Hay. A great afternoon of golf was had by everyone.

Saturday March 10: The Men’s TFM Monthly Medal 18 hole Nett Competition was held. A Grade: first place went to Jack Day with 69 nett, runner-up was Garth Bailo with 70 nett and third went to Peter Gilbert with 72 nett. B Grade: first place went to Paul Viertel with 72 nett, runner-up went to Chris Pottinger with 74 nett and third place went to Doug Johnstone with 75 nett.

C Grade: first Place went to Gary Wright with 71 nett, runner-up went to David Killeen with 72 nett and third went to Neil Stenhouse with 73 nett on a count-back from Dennis Brown. Garth Bailo was the gross winner with 71 nett. NTP: 5 and 14 - Garth Bailo and 12 Rupert Hohls.

Men and medley results Contributed by Roger Bonhomme The recent weeks of rain storms and rolling showers are starting to bite into the Club's budget with cancelled and downgraded events plus a reduction in social players. Last Wednesday's and Thursday's games were washed out.

On Saturday, the scheduled Sunshine Coast and South Burnett District Golf Association Carnival game was cancelled. This is always a major event for us. The Association sponsors the prizes and extra players come from as far away as Kingaroy, Murgon and Gympie.

Instead, the Club played a Medley Single Stableford event off the first tee. Newish member Darole Evans (hcp 7) celebrated his first mention in dispatches with an excellent 42 points to win A grade. Chris Russell (12), from the Club's well-known Russell family of golfers, finished second a point behind. B grade was won by Craig Frankcom (14), a visitor from Redland Bay, who had a day out also finishing with 42 plus a hole in one on the fifth. Des Wicks (18) finished second on 39. Steve Bowden (24) won C grade with 40 by a point from Jesse Roach (22). Considering the sloppy conditions and longish rough, the scores overall were very good. NTP: 2 – Jim Wells, 5 – Craig Frankcom, 16 – Lindsay Bartel, 18 – Tony Brown.
