Hi Everyone

W

ell what a smashing day Melbourne Cup was here in Glasshouse Country – Sarah and I headed off with camera in hand to take as many shots of our glamorous locals as we could, before the big event. We started off at Club Glasshouse where you would normally expect to see bowlers wearing hats to protect themselves from the sun, but I have to say their headwear was mostly just for fashion and very little about function! From there we headed to the RSL just in time to see the ladies and a few brave fellas arriving, and again there were some totally gorgeous outfits on display. Everyone seemed to be in high spirits even though the day was only just kicking off. We were almost out the door when we met the ‘Korczymski

Sisters Bernie Frizzo, Joan Porfiri, Barbara Hamwood and Liz Muir grew up in Landsborough (formally Korczymski girls) they met up at Beerwah RSL as Bernie who works at the RSL was compering on the day.

sisters’ Bernie Frizzo of Peachester who works at the RSL was compering the day and three of her four sisters were able to come along on the day to show their support. The girls grew up at Landsborough, Liz Muir now lives in Brisbane and Barbara Hamwood lives in Buderim and Joan Porfiri so it was nice to be able to get the photo on the cover showing how much they were enjoying being together. It was just a shame their other sister had to work on the day and missed out on all the fun. We then headed to the Beerwah Pub and fortunately we were there in time for the fashion parade. As this was our last stop, we had a great lunch and bought plenty of losing sweep tickets and backed all the wrong horses... can’t wait until next year to do it all again!

On Sunday morning ceremonies were held for Remembrance Day across Glasshouse Country as they were around the nation - people paused to remember those who have died in past and present conflicts.

The ceremonies mark the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, the moment when guns fell silent in 1918, ending World War I. I attended a ceremony at the Peachester Cemetery held by the Beerwah Peachester RSL Sub-branch. The short service which included a minute's silence at 11.00am with the haunting tones of the bugler playing the Last Post.

Appointments advised

Open 0900 - 1700 Monday to Friday After Hours & Saturday - by appointment only.

Nev Anning with Allan Walters After Nev’s presentation, I spoke to Nev and Allan Walters. Nev had served in the 2/26 Battalion with Allan’s father Vic Walters, and were in Changi Prisoner of War Camp together. During that time Nev made Allan’s dad a little tobacco tin out of metal from Japanese planes, which he decorated with etchings of the main building in the camp done with a darning needle. Clearly the tobacco tin is a really special memento for Allan. Nev told us rather matter of factly that he did quite a lot of tin work and some of his later projects had much better workmanship.

Following the ceremony, guests were invited to move down to the Wall of Remembrance that acknowledges the local soldiers who served in war, including those that have been laid to rest in other cemeteries mostly overseas. Nev Anning a founding member and now the most senior member of the Beerwah Peachester RSL, shared personal stories of a number of these local soldiers. Having the stories told from someone who knew the individuals and understood their experiences was very moving.

One piece he was particularly proud of was a ‘dixie’ that he etched around the outside of with all the buildings in the camp. This was a thank you for a fellow who had looked after him while he battled cholera while he was there. It is hard to imagine what the lives must have been like for the soldiers in Changi or for any soldiers that serve in war. This reminds me how important it is to stop and pause and think about them on Remembrance Day.

What’s planned for Glass House Mountains

7 Myrtle St MALENY

• Population: 2011 – 4001; 2031 – 4382 • Local jobs: 2011 – 491; 2031 - 888 • Land zoned as urban: 294 hectares • Number of single dwelling: 2011 – 925; 2031 – 1564 • Number of multiple dwellings: 2011 – 1; 2031 – 1 The figures show that Council expects there to be a reasonable increase in new houses (639), but only limited population growth (381 people). They also document a drop in average persons per household of 3.1 in 2011 to 2.8 in 2013. This may possibly be accounted for by the population growing older, not as many new families moving to the area or an increase in one or two person occupied dwellings – however the document doesn’t provide any clarification. The stated outcome for Glass House Mountains (local plan 7.2.15) is for it to remain a small rural town with a heritage character, primarily servicing the local community and visitors to the area, with the provision for some expansion of local business and residential areas.

Comparing the planning map for the township in this draft strategy to the one in the 2004 Caloundra City Plan, there are no new urban areas identified, however two neighbourhoods have been changed to allow for dual occupancy (e.g. duplex) development. The land where IGA is planned to move (the top of Bruce Parade) has been changed from multiunit residential to local centre (i.e. business and shops). A parcel of land on Coonowrin Road (opposite GCNews office) has changed from low density residential to medium density residential (e.g. town houses). The Priority Infrastructure Planning section (Schedule 3.e.ii Map 73) of the draft strategy show no new pathways and no new cycle ways for Glass House Mountains, even though one of the stated outcomes for the town is to facilitate ‘... safe and convenient pedestrian and cycle connections between and around key destinations within the local plan area.’ To view the local plan code for Glass House Mountains, the associated map for the Township and for the surrounding areas, as well as the planning map from the 2004 Caloundra City Plan, head to the ‘Hot Off The Press’ section of our website (www.gcnews.com.au).

Vox pop Glasshouse Country News asked locals what they thought of Council’s draft planning strategy consultation afternoon at Beerwah Community Hall.

Fred and Edna Eyles, Glass House Mountains We are interested in what is happening where we live and what is planned for where we may be moving to (Caloundra).

Paul Ryan, Beerwah I have a small farm and am concerned about the sustainability and future of smaller rural enterprises in the area.

Roger Callen, Beerwah I’ve come to see what the plan says about the Upper Coochin Creek Environmental Reserve. I’m a bit concerned that it is designated as Open Space rather than Environmental Management and Conservation Zone.

Lise Blackgrove, Beerwah I have an interest in the plans and future of the business centre in Beerwah, and so I’m here to see what the maps show for the area.

Black tie, with a touch of khaki… An exclusive charity dinner on Saturday Night celebrated the life and legacy of the original Wildlife Warrior, Steve Irwin, while raising money for wildlife conservation. The annual Steve Irwin Day gala dinner raises vital funds for Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors, to help continue the conservation work Steve was so passionate about and to keep his dream alive. This year’s fundraising dinner also celebrated another special milestone – the 10 year anniversary of Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors, which was established by Steve and Terri Irwin in 2002 as a way to include and involve other caring people to support the protection of injured, threatened or endangered wildlife. Last year’s event helped to raise over $100,000 for wildlife conservation, and the event’s goal in 2012 is to match that and continue to keep Steve's dream alive. From school yard to real world As the Year 12’s come to the end of their high school years this week, many still won’t have any idea where their life will lead, however last week GCNews spoke to two young local lads who have a clear path ahead. Cameron Brown and Jacob Hesse are two of the Beerwah High students who have been completing school based traineeships over the past two years – which have definitely paid off for them. Jacob has been working with the team from Community Recycling and has completed his Traineeship in Metal Fabrication. He’s been offered an apprenticeship as a boilermaker. Trish Cashin, Manager of Community Recycling said hearing the news that Jacob has been offered an apprenticeship with Hastings Deering at Archerfield in Brisbane was really great. He has had to get through a rigorous recruitment process and a competitive field of applicants, and we are just so proud of his achievements, she said. Jacob explained for the last few months he had completed a five step process involving sending a resume and cover letter, followed by skill testing in maths and english which he completed in Rockhampton, then a personal interview in Brisbane. All this was followed by additional psychographic testing then a medical. “I think we are just as proud of Jacob’s commitment to getting the position as well as his achievements in our work place as his parents are,” Trish said. Jacob originally started his school based traineeship after it was suggested to him by Ms Reader, the Industry Liaison Officer teacher at Beerwah High, and it seems like she definitely headed him in the right direction. Cameron Brown has been completing his school based traineeship with Barry Family Butcher at Beerwah, working Thursday, Friday and Saturday each week. After a short break for schoolies he

Jacob Hesse, Terry Purdy and Ashley Belfour will be officially signed up as an apprentice with them. Business owner Robert Barry said it was a strange thing when Cameron started with them, they really weren’t sure if he was cut out for the job. But he said after the first week, it just all seemed to click for him and he has really proved his worth. At Barry, they start their day at 5.00am which for some young people might be a big ask, but Robert said Cameron was always there early and ready to get on with work. It would appear his dedication to the job hasn’t gone unnoticed, as recently Cameron was awarded school based trainee of the year – which he shared with Ricky Burn from Glasshouse Manufacturing and Design for Beerwah High.

Bringing Christmas to disadvantaged kids BOQ Beerwah believes every child should share in the joy of Christmas, and throughout November will be collecting gifts for The Smith Family’s Toy and Book Appeal. BOQ has supported this Appeal for the last three years, and has been able to collect thousands of presents for disadvantaged children by calling on the support of its broad network of more than 270 branches. BOQ Beerwah Owner-Manager Jeff Willis encouraged everyone to reflect on what they could do this Christmas to help those in need. “It’s easy sometimes to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of our own lives and to forget how truly lucky we are,” Jeff said. “Many families in our local community aren’t as fortunate as others and the reality is that a number of children will wake up on Christmas

Hammer fails to fall on club sale By Greg Brown For 13 whole minutes last Thursday, there was a glimmer of hope that the liquidated Mooloolah Valley Country Club would rise from the ashes of insolvency to once again be a centre of leisure for local residents. That was the length of time that the enforced auction took from the first bid to the property being passed in. A small crowd of mostly ex-members, locals and the inquisitive watched as the bidding commenced at $200,000 from a floor bidder. The seller – Morton’s Solvency Accountants – countered with a vendors bid of $300,000 and that’s where it stayed, with neither of the two

YOUR LOCAL FOOT & ANKLE CLINIC

registered private bidders wanting to offer any more. However, after some negotiation, the original bidder offered $305,000 after which the auctioneer passed the property in. The liquidator is now hoping to negotiate with the interested parties to secure a sale. Once achieved, there may not be too much left for local businesses owed money after the collapse of the club. With secured creditors owed more than $400,000 and Morton’s Solvency Accountants bill to be somewhere between $150,000 and $200,000, all of the local unsecured creditors contacted by GCNews held no hope of recovering any losses.

Bushfire Alerts

Community News Glasshouse Mountains Muso’s Club

Contributed by Michael Whiticker Last Thursday saw probably one of the best Musos Club nights for a while. The board was stacked with 11 acts, so we had to limit everyone’s time on stage. Newcomers were on the rise this session with Noel Gardiner and Alex Bridge coming down from Maleny and dazzling us with their beautiful harmonies and professional presentation and sound. In their set which included a fantastic version of Peter Allan’s ‘Tenterfield Saddler’, the stunner for me was Dougie MacLean's very beautiful ‘I am ready For The Storm’. Young guitarist Tayhg Pomfret blew us all away with a highly acrobatic set in which he coaxed every sound imaginable from his guitar hammering with both his fingers and hands up and down the neck and all over the body. The highlight for me was his reading of Daniel Champagne’s version of ‘Willie Dixon’s Spoonful’. Another act we hadn’t heard before was a couple who have been coming to the club for 18 months without so much as a boo, until this Thursday night when they popped up and totally surprised us with the glorious voice of Tina Davidson backed by partner Gavin on guitar and harmonica. A highpoint for me in their impressive set was a version of Jon English’s ‘Six Ribbons’. Regulars for the night included Greg Bryant who was in striking form (not that I have heard him give any less). He began his set with Sam Cooke’s ‘A Change is Gonna Come’, and we were putty in his hands from that moment on. Peter Gawith appeared with a new Taylor guitar in hand and opened the evening with a fine set which included RobbIe Robertson’s classic ‘The Weight’. Glenn Stephens was his usual brilliant self on the piano, and with a vocal range that seems to have no upper limit, his attempting Freddie Mercury’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ with its balletic vocal dance, was no surprise and a lot of fun for the ‘would be choristers’ in the audience. Other regulars Mick Od, Frank Moroney, Pam Mathews, Paul Fagan, Doug Pullen and yours truly filled out a big but memorable evening at the Sports Club.

Correction Matilda Fruit Barn wishes to apologise to customers. The ad that

appeared in last week’s GCNews had an incorrect price for the Super Jumbo Eggs (860g) it should have been $2.99.

Contributed by Gavin J Stewart, Volunteer Community Educator Glasshouse Mountains Rural Fire Brigade The Queensland State Government implemented a new fire danger rating and national bushfire warning system in 2009. As a result of the interim findings of the Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission, and in consultation with the other states, the new system saw changes to the fire danger rating system, with two new categories, Severe and Catastrophic, being added. The new fire danger rating is also used as a trigger for the level of advice and messaging to the community when a fire starts. There will be three types of alert messages: Advice, Watch and Act and Emergency Warnings. If you receive an emergency warning about a bushfire or other emergency, take notice as it could save your life. The three types of alert messages help you make the right safety choices: 1. Bushfire Advice Message – a fire has started. It provides general information to keep you up-to-date with developments on a fire. 2. Bushfire Watch and Act Message – represents a heightened level of threat. Conditions are changing, a fire is approaching; lives may come under threat. Take appropriate action to protect and prepare yourselves. 3. Bushfire Emergency Warning – is the highest level message advising of impending danger. It may be accompanied by a siren sound (the Standard Emergency Warning Signal – or SEWS). If you are interested in joining a local Rural Fire Service, contact the Rural Operations Caloundra office on 5420 7517 for all the local brigade details.

n St This will be the third event organised by Shannon Greenwood from Hinterland Body and Soul and Annette Angel of My Travel Treasures – and this month they are reminding people with Christmas nearly upon us that ‘Tis the season to shop locally’. So if you are coming in to Beerwah don’t just pop into town for your essentials and then head straight home, how about you take some time out and take a walk about town and see what special offers the local businesses have put out to tempt you. And as the next few weeks are going to get really crazy before things really heat up, why not catch up with a friend for a coffee and tasty treat at one of our great local cafes? Or have a quiet lunch and take some time out to start your list of Christmas gifts you need to buy? Then take a look around the local shops and see if you can get your shopping started straight away – and remember vouchers make a practical but appreciated gift! To keep Beerwah as a thriving local business area, we need to ensure that the businesses can remain viable and stay open. So in this current tough economic climate how about you show your support for local businesses by embracing the ‘Shop Local for Christmas’ motto.

Education sponsorship brings empowerment Zambian Outreach, based in Peachester, is committed to raising funds to help the most vulnerable children in Lusaka, capital of Zambia, working through the local African group, Action For Empowerment. Chairman of Zambian Outreach David Christmas said earlier this year, one of their AFE orphans, 16-year-old Natasha Nyirenda is currently studying Year 11 at Kabulonga Girls High School. “After losing her mother at two-weeks-of-age and her father abandoning his parental duties, her life offered little hope and left her feeling like she amounted to nothing. “However four years ago, a friend introduced her to an organisation called Action for Empowerment which is based in Helen Kaunda and her life has now changed dramatically for the better,” he said. Natasha was selected to give a speech to hundreds of youth at a United Nations sponsored gathering and the following is an excerpt from what she had to say…. ‘Action for Empowerment has became an angel in my life. They sent me to school, bought me school uniforms and all other school requirements. I am now staying with my grandmother in Chelstone. Last year I wrote my grade nine examination after so much hard work in my school studies. I then had a true dream and challenge. I am glad to let you know that I did very well and was sent to Kabulonga girl’s high school. My world is no longer small but big, with big dreams. I would like to be a doctor. I am grateful to Action for Empowerment for helping me and many others that are being helped by the same organisation. Lastly but not the least, on behalf of so many

This has meant a lot to all of us and a passionate challenge in our lives. I know we can make it and we will!! Thank you so much.’ “We feel so encouraged that United Nations Zambia office, is recognising our effort in the community as we try to help these children access basic quality education,” David said. “However, the education bill for 106 children is costly. Travelling Tales

with Hannah Fardell

GCNews recently spoke to Hannah Fardell who had just returned from a spectacular holiday on the other side of the world.

Where did you go on your trip? We went to Italy, Greece, Turkey, England, Scotland and Wales. How long was your trip? We travelled for two months in total. What did you do on your trip? We cruised around the Mediterranean, the weather was perfect. A bit rainy in the UK but still beautiful. What were the highlights for you? The cruise, without a doubt was the main highlight. I was chosen to model Hannah Fardell a dress from the onboard shop along with $8,000 earrings and a $15,000 bracelet. The culture and lifestyle of those living in Europe, the people were different, the food, your surroundings. The light nights were amazing, visiting the Trevi Fountain at 11.00pm and it all was a buzz! You will see some of the clearest, bluest, most beautiful water in the Mediterranean. The history and rich culture of the UK will blow your mind.

Hannah's parents Carol and Glen

Contributed by Chris Bell - Chaplaincy Secretary Around 120 guests attended the Chaplaincy Fund Raiser Morning Melodies Variety Concert held at the Beerwah State High School on Thursday, November 1. There were talented performances from the school dance and music students, plus humorous acts from dancing nuns and mute monks doing the Hallelujah Chorus. These performances were complemented by the piano solo by an amazing 6 year old Matthew Flinders College student Haris Salam, the Singing Belles chorus line, plus skits from the talent warehouse of Glasshouse Country Care. The oldies in the audience were delighted with the exuberance of the youth items and the Local Chaplaincy Committee are very grateful for the assistance of Tania Matthews, Staff and Student Council members who looked after the sound and light and served the food which had been supplied by the local church communities. On the Friday night ‘Another opening Another Show’ was presented with stars of musicals thrilling the smaller intimate audience with their lovely voices and brilliant musical abilities. They were supported by dancing nuns, Macbeth, Watt St Ware, Jan Meade's monologue and mute monks doing the Hallelujah Chorus again. Special thanks must go to members of Glasshouse Country Care for their support for Chairman of Chaplaincy Mrs Glenda McSwain, who organised the concert and performed in nearly all the items.

School News Glenview State School ‘Khaki It!’

Crikey! A word made famous by one man, a local hero, Steve Irwin. Steve lived in his khakis and spent most of his time dodging the bite of a venomous snake or wrestling a nine foot croc. This year in memory of Steve Irwin and his legacy and passion for nurturing and saving wildlife, Glenview State School is participating in ‘Khaki Day’ (or ‘Steve Irwin Day’) which is celebrated on November 15. The students will be wearing khaki on this special day and will be raising money for the Australian Zoo Wildlife Hospital. Living so close to Australia Zoo, the children from Glenview State School really felt the blow when Steve tragically died from a stingray barb in 2006. Year 1 teacher, Melanie Osborne remembers the incident. “I still get goose bumps thinking about the afternoon when I heard from some of the parents that our beloved Wildlife Warrior had tragically died doing what he loved best. Word spread like wildfire. The community was in shock,” she said. Even though he is not with us today, his legacy lives on in the minds and hearts of the local community. Year 7 Glenview student, Shayla Pollard recalls, “I remember Steve Irwin to be larger than life. He taught us that crocs and snakes are not just predators, but animals in peril. He made everyone stop and listen to what he had to say.” Glenview students believe that wearing khaki is more than just a colour. It’s an attitude. It’s a stand to make a difference. Year 6 student, Jed Carroll sums up the event beautifully. “Khaki Day is about family, wildlife conservation, wearing khaki and fun!” Joe Clarke, Jed Carroll, Elijah Carroll, Lily Coleman

School News from Narelle Hill Beerwah State High correspondent

Winding up in style As the end of the 2012 school year draws to a close all of the students at Beerwah State High School have been keeping very busy, but the Year 12’s more so than others. ‘With what?’ you may ask, ‘Assignments? Tests? Saying goodbye to one another before being unleashed into the big bad world?’ My answer to that is no… not really. While those things have been a major and stressful part of our final term EVER, there has been another event plaguing our minds - the Year 12 formal. Since the end of 2011, hype has been fostered around this black-tie occasion. I recall girls talking about what cut and colour dress they wanted (and rest assured they do have a dress by now even if it wasn’t what they originally wanted) and if they were risking a spray tan or not. It took a while longer for the excitement to filter into the male populace but it’s certainly there. In fact, I find their anticipation endearing; they want to know what colour vest, shirt, suit and tie they should buy which has resulted in a plethora of Facebook ‘selfies’ (pictures of themselves… in suits!) from the Year 12 guys. Right now the excitement is reaching fever pitch and as I’m writing this article there is exactly a week to go until the big night. I expect it’ll be like a miniature red carpet fiasco and I can hear the whispers already - Who got it right? Who got it wrong? Is anyone wearing the same thing? Regardless of the fashion side of things, I hope it’s a fun night for all and I can honestly say that this year’s Year 12’s deserve it. Good luck everyone and I guess this is me signing off. It’s been a pleasure writing articles for you all!

ThankÊyou

The Beerburrum State School P&C would like to Thank the following Businesses for their generosity towards our Melbourne Cup function... • Acacia Grove / Village Building • Armesto’s Transport • Beerwah Hair & Beauty • Daisy's Place • Glasshouse Country Meats • Cate Ruby • Aussie World • Avon - Raqual Manson • Beerwah Soul Pattinson • Beerwah Flowers & Gifts • Smileys Jewellers Beerwah • Cedar House Homewares • Glass House Mountains Post Office

Climbing High at Mooloolah School

Students at Mooloolah State School have even more reason to love their school now! Following much anticipation, the newest addition to the school’s array of great playground equipment was ‘unveiled’ recently. The exciting ‘Space Jet’ towers six metres high, on the crest above the school oval, between the hall and the Outside School Hours Care facility. This commanding climbing apparatus is the outcome of long-standing discussions and research by the dedicated Mooloolah P&C Committee. The bark ground cover underneath the Space Jet is a specialist playground safety product, ‘Softlanding Slash’, manufactured and very kindly donated by Bassett Barks of Mt Beerwah Road, Glass House Mountains. Guidelines were agreed by students and staff, to maximise enjoyment and safety for everyone. These guidelines mirror the school’s 4 Bees Policy of ‘Be Safe, Be Responsible, Be Respectful and Be an Active Learner’. Predictably, the Space Jet has become the new playtime favourite. At every break that the sun shines, children in hats swarm up and down and through the spider web of thick tensioned ropes, unaware of their progressive gains of fitness, agility, coordination, balance, motor activity, mental planning and lots of fun challenges and achievements. Did you know that all of these skills enhance and compliment the learning that happens in the classroom? Mooloolah State School is a great place to learn through work and play! Unity College students recognised for leadership and teamwork Three Unity College students were recently awarded the prestigious Long Tan Award for Teamwork and Leadership. The ADF Long Tan Leadership and Teamwork Awards started in 2006 and aim to recognise students who demonstrate leadership and teamwork within both the school and the broader local community. At the same time, they recognise those who display strong values, such as doing one's best, respect for others and 'mateship', that are integral to Australian society. "The 2012 recipients espouse all these values and are to be commended on receiving this award," said Pathways Coordinator, Bianca Beard. The Year 10 recipient was Douglas Simpson who has been involved in a range of community activities, including Surf Life Saving. He also participates in a range of sporting teams, often as captain. In Year 11, the award recognised Lexy Haggard's contribution to the College. She has held a number of formal leadership roles and has led by example in Dance Ensemble and as a Student Teacher. Finally, the recipient for Year 12 has been involved in both school and community pursuits for many years. Jamie Brown has been active in cricket and hockey as a player, coach and umpire. He has held official leadership roles and has led by example; on stage as a talented musician, in class and when supporting many College events. "These three are worthy recipients who have contributed in many ways. They are great leaders and team players," said Mrs Beard. Students were presented with certificates and cheques to the value of $100.00 for Year 10, $250.00 for Year 11 and $500.00 for Year 12. All are to be congratulated for their continued effort and contributions to the College and community. Long Tan leaders Jamie Brown, Lexy Haggard and Douglas Simpson • unite • inspire • succeed

Tech Time IT News

Web Review

with Gus

In the news

Windows 8 was released on October 26, just three years and four days since Windows 7 came onto the market. My first Windows was released in March 1992! That’s over 20 years now – blimey!! A lot has changed in 20 years, but how much has changed in three? What’s New? Well, Windows 8 has been developed as a serious Desktop/Laptop operating system, not just for the booming Tablet market. It is reportedly smaller and more efficient (initial results confirm it boots and performs quicker) as well as being more user friendly. Easy to Use? Windows 8 is very different from all previous Windows versions and takes some getting used to. But, if you’re Windows savvy and happy to explore, it doesn’t take too long to feel your way around. It does feel fresh and I’m sure those with Tablets and touch screen PC’s will benefit the most. Upgrading: Microsoft has decided to turbo charge Windows 8 migration by offering very cheap upgrades (up to January 31, 2013). If you are running a PC on XP with Service Pack 3, Vista or Windows 7 (bought prior to June 2, 2012) you can upgrade (via download) for just $39.99. If you bought a Windows 7 PC since June 2 you can upgrade for $14.99 if you register with Microsoft before February 28, 2013. Our Advice: Having never liked Vista and being willing to try something new, I upgraded my laptop to Windows 8 and think it’s a bargain at $39.99. As for XP and Windows 7 users, though you could miss the opportunity of a cheap upgrade, it may be better to hold off for a while: like any new Windows release there are a few wrinkles that need ironing out, and Windows 7 is such a great product you may never need to bother. As for the Mac users, you ain’t missing anything! Finally: Remember, we are not the shop, we operate from home so we can provide better value and service. We come to you – locals, looking after locals. Follow our Facebook blog for ongoing new tech developments.

Did you know? We’ve all heard of Google, Facebook and Microsoft. We all know that Google is the one to impress with your business website, Facebook (or some would argue Twitter) is the one to utilise when spreading the word, and Microsoft is... well... Microsoft!! I thought today, however, I’d cover a couple of things that maybe you don't know about these tech giants... Google - sure it takes money (from businesses who willingly throw money at it) but it also gives a lot back! Apart from the fact that it will find you a website on pretty much anything you’d like to know, Google also makes it incredibly easy to access the latest statistical information on just about every facet of every country! To check it out, go to www.google.com/ publicdata and click the 'Explore the data' button. Facebook - ever considered setting up an online store? Well now you can do it through Facebook itself, just go to www.payvment.com to create your free account or check out examples of other new Facebook stores online. Microsoft - you may have heard that Windows 8 was released last week, and that its user interface was created with mobile devices (phones, tablets etc.) in mind. What you may not know is that due to this inspired design, you can now get tablets with all the computing power and ability of a real PC. In fact you can now get 'hybrid' devices which are real PC’s, but which also convert into tablet form. Some do this by detaching from their keyboard, some by flipping the screen to face either inward (laptop mode) or outward (tablet mode).

Jack Ferris - “I was born with a bull whip in my hand”

John Charles (Jack) Ferris was born in Roma on June 8, 1901 and was from the age of four, brought up in an area known as ‘Pointon’s Pocket’, located between Peachester and Woodford. His father was a bullock driver working in the timber industry so Jack’s early education was related to hauling timber using a bullock team. By the age of 10 Jack was regularly engaged helping his father to earn a living in timber, but in January 1912, when the Commissioner’s Flat School opened, Jack was enrolled. During an interview in 1988 Jack admitted half the time when he should have been at school he was at home working. The School’s Register showed that Jack Ferris and his siblings were enrolled when the school started in January 1912 and Jack left at the end of 1915. Jack recalled he left in June 1915, as soon as he turned 14, and went to work in the bush driving the bullock team full time. The Commissioner’s Flat School celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 1962 and Jack Ferris attended. A Jubilee badge and Jack’s name tag were discovered in Bankfoot House and are now part of the historic collection. The Commissioner’s Flat School closed in 1972 after 60 years. This year, in 2012, the school would have celebrated its centenary. Despite the school not reaching its 100th anniversary, Jack Ferris certainly did. His hard work and lack of formal education did not prevent him from reaching the age of 101!

Monthly Finance Money Guide Financial Planning? What Does it REALLY Mean?

with Ross Wolstencroft You may not know that 67 per cent of Australians do not plan for the future. And with that in mind, would you be surprised if I told you that 77 per cent of Australians over the age of 65 receive some form of income support – scary! Why is it that some people, given these statistics, just don’t see the value of planning for the lifestyle they want? To us, a successful financial plan focuses on what really counts to you…. usually this revolves around achieving the lifestyle you want, when you want it. Therefore, it is really about managing the journey of a financial client, not just about the percentage return that can be achieved in the short term.

The financial planning process should therefore start with a very simple question – 'What are your goals?' Only after establishing these goals can we answer the next question – 'What are appropriate strategies to deliver on these goals?' So the process should proceed something like this: • Assess your current financial situation • Determine short / medium / long term goals • Prepare an individually tailored strategy  Investment and wealth accumulation (best structures? tax management?)  Reduce Debt ('good' debt versus 'bad' debt)  Protect your income earning ability, and assets  Estate Planning

• Consider appropriate investment product alternatives • Implement the strategy and plan • Review and Monitor the plan regularly

Thanks to the students that participated in my annual Christmas card competition. We were overwhelmed with entries this year which made the judging pretty tough! The winner for 2012 came from Wamuran State School but in second place we had a talented student from Beerburrum State School. Peachester and Glass House Mountains State Schools also had some excellent entries and a few students from these schools will be awarded with a Highly Commended certificate. You can see the winning entries and the runner-ups in my electorate wide Christmas card and 2013 calendar that will be sent to all households in the first week of December. All of the students that entered will be sent a letter from me thanking them for their efforts.

I know there are many people in our community who like to keep up to date with legislation changes and announcements from the Government. A new Government media statements website has been launched aimed at improving the Government’s ability to communicate with Queenslanders. The new website – statements.qld.gov.au incorporates social media sharing and is optimised for mobile devices. You can visit the site and register for all Government media statements or just select which Ministers or Departments you are most interested in.

Locals offer land for koala habitat

The Newman Government’s Koala Habitat Program has had overwhelming support from the community with over 150 applications received. The Newman Government is committed to protecting Queensland’s koala population and having enough land set aside for protected koala habitat is an important part of that. Expressions of interest will now be competitively assessed against a range of criteria, with suitability of habitat being the main focus. $22.5 million will be spent on koala habitat in South East Queensland as part of our Investing in our Koalas policy. In addition to the koala habitat program a further $800,000 will be invested in koala rescue and rehabilitation services and a commitment of $3.2 million to disease research. Stamping out Graffiti

The Newman government has declared war on graffiti with an $110,000 grant going to the Sunshine Coast Council in a bid to rid our local area of the destructive works. Graffitti costs local council thousands of dollars each year and this fund by our Government will ensure the council won’t have to redirect funds from any other vital community services. Council will use the money to target several known trouble spots including bus shelters and local skate parks, picnic facilities and playground equipment.

Green scheme update

I asked the Queensland Competition Authority (QCA) to investigate the impact of Federal Labor’s ‘green schemes’ on electricity prices. This enquiry revealed electricity bills in Queensland would be at least 18 per cent cheaper without them. Most of the renewable energy sources are three to 10 times more expensive than traditional ones and those costs are being directly added to electricity bills courtesy of the Federal Labor Government. The analysis showed that the ‘green schemes’ were not only costing the average Queensland family around $350.00 per year, but the extra cost of electricity paid by business was passed through, adding to the overall cost of living. I’m now hoping the Productivity Commission will take a close look at these schemes given the findings so we are all clear about real costs before we all are stuck with the bill.

Movember

And on a lighter note my Mo is certainly coming along. I’m aiming for a finely groomed moustache in a bid to help raise funds for Movember and in the next edition I’ll be sure to include a picture so you can judge the progress for yourself. Having developed a close relationship with the men’s shed groups in my electorate; I’ve seen how important it is for men to get their prostate checked and to talk openly about the issue. With your support I’m hoping to raise at least $1.000.00 for a very worthy cause. All the funds raised from registered Movember participants go towards Beyond Blue, the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, education programs and Movember’s global action plan. Since the Beerwah Kilcoy Road traverses a swamp habitat, it would be good to see a wildlife warning sign as I often see water hens and ducks on the edge of the road and the occasional dead one.

Roys Road Cemetery

It has deeply saddened myself and my family, to be at the receiving end of things being stolen from our loved one’s grave site. It came to our attention three months ago when we noticed while visiting the cemetery that some of our belongings had gone missing. We thought it was just some random act. But then we placed some heavy potted plants and flowers at the grave, thinking it looked so beautiful and making us feel better. But, within a few weeks those items too disappeared, giving us a very heavy heart. We were in disbelief. And then just in the last fortnight, after putting some pretty flowers at the grave, a week later, they were gone. Losing a precious family member is heartbreaking enough, and for someone to be stealing the special gifts we place on our beloved grave is criminal. It has been very sad for our family to witness this, and I'm sure other sites at the cemetery have been targeted. I ask if everyone in the area could stay vigilant and aware of the happenings in the area, so that we don't have to be hurt by this again.

For the Ebenezer fundraiser (‘Two Magic Days’ in Maleny) held at the Maleny Botanic Gardens on November 3 and 4 to be the great success it was took the hard work of many. Frank Shipp donated his entire property free of charge, local businesses donated goods; business houses, schools, churches, service clubs, the Maleny Garden Club, recreational clubs, newspapers, radio stations, friends and families, all helped advertise the event. Included also in the line-up to receive thanks are local musicians, cooks, cleaners, servers, pray-ers, story tellers, face painters, family members, teenagers from the Christian Youth Club, stall holders and any others I may have forgotten! And thanks also to our friends, families and all the public who attended and lastly but certainly not least the Friends of Ebenezer Team who pulled out all the stops to make the weekend a very happy place to be! Great atmosphere, a wonderful place to ‘catch up’ and friendships forged and cemented. So to one and all I give you ‘a big, huge, fat thank you’. Brilliant!

Excavating the Reality

Every year we hear the story of a baby born in a manger. The Christmas season is not just religious but is cultural in this country. But can we be sure Jesus existed and that the Bible story actually happened? Can we be sure the New Testament documentation of the events is believable? The answer appears to be ‘yes’; not just ‘yes’ but a resounding cry of affirmation. In the thousands of still existing hand written copies of the ancient Greek New Testament there is hope that the answer is ‘yes’. At the archaeological excavation of a refuse tip of the ancient city of Oxyrhynchus south-west of Cairo over 100 years ago, two Oxford scholars, Grenfell and Hunt, discovered fragments of the Biblical book of Matthew. Another separate surprising find in Egypt, known as Papyrus 52, contains part of the story of the trial of Jesus as recorded in the gospel of John. Of particular interest is the dating of Papyrus 52 to approximately 50 years after the author John had written the gospel which bears his name.

When looking for authenticity, it comes so close to the original it demands credibility. The wording is critically equal to later copies, and that suggests even more credibility. So when you approach Christmas in 2012, remember the story is not childish. It is a true story about God’s great gift to humanity. The baby Jesus provided hope for the participants in the story. He provides hope for all because as an adult he chose the road to Calvary. Check out both stories in your family Bible. Try reading the second chapter of Luke and the last four chapters of John to discover the narratives. Both are interesting and inspirational.

Thank you Aldi

I have to say how relieved I was when I read your article about Aldi's battery recycling bins. I moved over from the UK four years ago where battery recycling bins were in the majority of supermarkets and battery recycling was taken for granted. We use a lot of batteries in our household, as I'm sure other families do and up until now I have had nowhere to dispose of them safely. I have been keeping them in a tub in a drawer in my kitchen. I look forward to regaining the use of that space. Thank you, Aldi!

I’m worried

As Campbell Newman's uranium mining ambitions recede from the headlines; it is interesting to reflect on the likely impacts of this bold decision on the Sunshine State. The three initial mine sites are Valhalla, in the Mt Isa region, Westmoreland, further west and the high grade Ben Lomond deposit, a mere 50 kms west of Townsville. For a start, going down the nuclear path will surely tarnish Queensland's reputation as a place of natural beauty where local and overseas visitors have traditionally chosen to recharge their batteries. Magnetic Island is likely to lose its appeal to holiday makers once there is a uranium mine just a stone’s throw away. Surely this will have ripple effects on the entire industry. The process of extracting the ore itself is hardly a squeaky-clean operation. The Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (Arpansa) continues to raise concerns about

Huge thank you

Curves Beerwah would like to send a huge thank you to all the wonderful businesses in the Glasshouse Country area who donated gifts for our Pink Ribbon Luncheon that we held for our annual Curves Breast Cancer Awareness fundraiser. We are well aware that businesses get bombarded with requests for donations at this time of year so this makes us especially grateful. We also wish to thank all of our members who so generously supported this important cause and helped contribute to the total sum of $893.00 that we raised. Curves clubs have been fundraising for Cancer Council Australia for the past six years and have raised more than $1.3 million through the Cancer Council fund, so every little bit raised by individual clubs adds up to this significant amount. The ‘Rescue’ horses

Just to prevent any more confusion … I did have the grey mare in Max’s paddock for a number of years, on ‘permanent loan’ from the owner. ‘Permanent loan’ means she’s yours unless you don’t want, or can’t keep her anymore – at which time she’s to go back home. When I had to give up riding, the mare was going back to her owner until Max introduced us all to a lovely young local girl who was looking for a horse. After carefully checking that she would be able to handle the horse, we arranged for her to take the mare.

Conditions

The mare was never in danger of going to the doggers and I certainly did not dump her in a rescue paddock after years of riding her. While the mare unquestionably benefits from Max’ s daily loving care, and enjoys the company of his other horses, to the best of my knowledge she does have a carer and an owner who sees her regularly.

Sunshine Coast Koala Wildlife Rescue

Last Thursday GCNews received this photo asking if we knew why the AGL Helicopter landed in Beerwah? We put it on Facebook and asked the question and in no time we received this message from Donna Sawka who had spoken to the pilot. “An emergency beacon was activated so they followed the signal to a house and found that no one was home, but got inside and found the beacon had fallen off the shelf and self activated so it was a false alarm. The callout cost for this rescue would have been around $5 000.” Thankfully no one was hurt or in any danger – thanks Donna for clearing up the mystery for us.

No ‘certain TV Commercial’, a thriving toddler is not a happy toddler - not always. The reality is that a thriving toddler can be happy, angry, whining, angelic, sweet, compassionate, selfish and unselfish, sometimes in the space of minutes. This is what a thriving toddler does because they are Healthy, Normal and Learning! Don't believe there's something wrong with you if your toddler is not happy 24/7! It’s a reality of being a parent that you will experience your child displaying a whole range of emotions. Logically we all know that these ads are only showing the warm and fuzzy side of being a mum, and in their defence, they’re never going to sell us the painful side of motherhood to promote their product, but don’t disregard just how much impact these ads can have on the expectations we place on ourselves as parents. Many of us heavily judge our parenting ability by how our child behaves and we feel like we must

be doing something wrong if our child plays up. But the reality is that your child’s behaviour is not even about you, it’s about their reaction to their current perception of events, which often comes from their immature understandings about life. This is isn’t wrong. It’s normal! It’s just part of their development. Furthermore, we are not here to make sure our kids are happy every minute of the day because the reality is they’re not always going to feel that way. Do you? Our job is to prepare them with an accurate understanding of the ups and downs of life and teach them how to deal with those times when life doesn’t meet their expectations or desires. So next time you experience your child’s ‘undesirable’ behaviour, remember that this is your ‘thriving toddler’ and that this moment is a valuable one for learning, even if it isn’t a ‘happy’ one.

Why is Hydrotherapy so successful in treating arthritis and back pain?

I snore and wake up feeling tired, almost as though I haven’t slept. Could I have Sleep Apnoea and how do I find out if I have? It is quite possible. Sleep Apnoea is a condition where you stop breathing for short periods while asleep. Symptoms may include snoring, easily falling asleep in front of the TV or when reading. You often wake in the morning feeling unrefreshed and just generally tired during the day. A Medicare funded diagnostic test is available from Pelican Waters Pharmacy without the need for costly uncomfortable overnight hospital stays. Call Pelican Waters Pharmacy to see if you meet the Medicare criteria. Pelican Waters Pharmacy offers a complete service ranging from the actual test for sleep apnoea, the diagnosis, through to the supported introduction to therapy.

Hydrotherapy is extremely beneficial for musculoskeletal conditions such as arthritis and back pain. Hydrotherapy is commonly used in post-operative patients to begin the re-conditioning exercises. The buoyancy of the water allows a lot of exercises to be carried out that would be difficult on land. The water eliminates the risk of falls and therefore is a great place to start balance and proprioceptive retraining. The resistance of the water can also be used to strengthen most body parts and is good cardiovascular re-training, and is a gentle way to begin an exercise program. Exercises are tailored to suit your own specific needs, and classes are small so each patient receives adequate guidance and supervision. For more information call 5494 1977 to discuss hydrotherapy as a treatment option.

Things 2 Do Introduction to Buddhist Philosophy and Meditation

Cheryl and Paul Jepson with Lynne and Rod Linfield at Beerwah Hotel

Every Wednesday between 6.30pm – 7.30pm you can learn about Buddhist philosophy and meditation at the Chenrezig Institute, 33 Johnsons Road, Eudlo. Gain the philosophical tools to help you deal with everyday challenges. The Wednesday evenings are presented by western monks and nuns and are suitable for beginners. The Buddha taught that the key to peace of mind and happiness is to generate and apply a warm and kind heart in our daily interactions. One way to cultivate and maintain loving kindness is to listen to the Buddha’s wisdom and develop a regular mediation practice. There is no charge for the evening, however a donations help to keep this program running. Apart from the formal study programs offered at the Chenrezig Institute, it is a peaceful, calm and relaxing place to spend a few hours, days or weeks. To find out more check out their website www.chenrezig.com.au or call 5453 2108.

We walk each Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6.30am for about an hour. We meet at Martin Rungert Park, right in the centre of town, and walk a variety of routes about the local area. It’s a great way to start the day and to meet new friends. This is a Heart Foundation group activity with certificates being awarded for the number of walks completed. You don’t have to walk every day, or for the whole hour – just do as much as you feel you can. Please consider joining this friendly little group for a great start to the day. For more details phone Helen on 5494 7496.

Great trees for Glasshouse Country

Have you noticed some of the wonderful trees flowering at the moment? We are truly lucky that years ago people had the foresight to plant some lovely specimen trees which we can enjoy today and for years to come. But what if they didn’t plant them – what if they had planted something small and compact? How boring would our landscape be without these grand old trees? How much hotter would our backyards, parks and streets be without their shade? How bland would our landscapes be without their burst of colour or grandeur of form? How lost would our wildlife be without their flowers, fruits and foliage to feed upon, or branches to nest within? We should be truly thankful to our forebears for their efforts. But what will we leave our descendants? What mark of beauty left by you in the landscape will be admired in 50 or a 100 year’s time? The number of times I’ve heard ‘I’d like to plant something low growing, with pretty flowers that doesn’t need maintenance’ – which is all fine and dandy in small backyards, but those of us with some wider spaces should also be asking ‘What can I plant that will leave a mark for people to enjoy in years to come?’ So – ladies and gentleman – my challenge to you is ask not what your landscape can do for you, but what you can do for your landscape (apologies to JFK).

My new crusade is: - if you have a large urban block, or a rural-residential or rural property, for you to plant at least one legacy tree. One shining beacon of beauty which will become a spectacular part of the landscape for generations to come. To guide you on your mission, I’ve asked for the wise advice of plant guru Simon Smith from Go Green Rainforest Nursery to suggest some fantastic trees for you to consider. And my campaign will be to highlight a couple of these trees each month – starting next month. Get behind the ‘Great Trees for Glasshouse Country’ revolution – create a legacy and make a difference.

M.R.W.L. Inc Plant of the Month Red Bean, Miva Mahogany, Onionwood Dysoxylum mollissimum subsp. molle syn. D. forsteri, D. molle, D. muelleri This beautiful specimen tree is a rainforest species which occurs along the eastern seaboard of Australia, from Coffs Harbour to Cooktown. One of its most distinctive features is the gorgeous soft hairy large leaflets, which is where its name is derived – as mollissimum is from Latin, meaning ‘very soft’. A large and stately tree, reaching a height of 35 metres, it is buttressed at its base. The scaly and rough trunk is grey to brown in colour with the freshly cut bark smelling like onions. This plant will attract birds to your property, and handles a position of full sun to part shade. It is a fast growing species suitable for a large open situation. The leaves are large, up to 60cm in length, with 11 - 23 pairs of leaflets. The creamy flowers which are to 5mm, are hairy, and form from January to July. The fruit is a capsule up to 2cm in diameter, yellow-brown in colour with a warty, wrinkled surface, opening in three to five segments each. They have a reddish brown seed covered by red or orange aril, ripening between November and March. As a timber species it is a well-regarded mahogany, with medium to coarse grain which is uniform in texture. Miva Mahogany is well suited for cabinet work, carving, floor boards and boat building.

Learn how to attract frogs to your garden Mooloolah Waterwatch and Landcare are holding a Frog Identification Workshop on Sunday, November 18 from 2.00pm to 8.30pm. There are several conditions that you will also need for frogs to be attracted to your garden. Water needs to be present whether in a pond, dam or creek, preferably moving water to increase oxygen levels. The presence of water also increases humidity which is an important key to a healthy frog habitat. Plants can also have an impact. The Eastern Sedge Frog - Litoria fallax cannot resist a stand of Woolly Frogmouth - Philydrum lanuginosum. The Mat Rush - Lomandra longifolia, Creek Mat Rush - Lomandra hystrix and Lomandra spicata - Yellow Fruited Mat Rush also offers great protection for the frogs as does the Common Rush - Juncus usitatus. If any further information on frogs and their habitat is of interest to you, please register your spot by calling the Mooloolah Native Nursery on 5494 5074 or drop in at 2671 Steve Irwin Way Glenview. Or if you would like to purchase any of the plants mentioned you can get them from their nursery.

CHRISTMAS PARTIES, GIFTS AND YOUR TAX OBLIGATIONS As that time of year looms again, small business employers once again start organising the annual Christmas party and gifts. To ensure that your business receives the most benefit, or does not attract having to pay FBT you should understand just what is allowable and what is not, otherwise you may be in for a nasty surprise. The staff Christmas party Entertainment for staff is generally not an allowable income tax deduction and when you provide a Christmas party for your employees you are effectively entertaining your staff and their family members if also invited. By holding such a party, the implication is that the entertainment expense will be subject to Fringe Benefits Tax, but then also allowable as a deductible income tax expense if you choose to pay the correct amount of FBT applicable. The down side to this is that any tax savings on the income tax side will most likely be outweighed by the FBT payable and the nuisance of having to prepare and lodge an annual FBT return..

32

|

|

NOVEMBER 14 2012

The exception to this is the ‘minor benefit’ rule. This is where the benefit has a taxable value of no more than $300.00 and it would be unreasonable to be treated as a fringe benefit. Even if the payment of a business Christmas party falls under the ‘minor benefit’ rule the expense is still not income tax deductible, but it will also not be subject to FBT. This is a good incentive to keep the costs under the $300.00 per person limit. Hosting the party on business premises during working hours will also reinforce the application of the minor benefit rule. It should also be noted that the above applies not just to Christmas parties but to any business celebrations. The GST on expenses associated with a business celebration will not be claimable under any circumstances, whether you claim the expense and pay the FBT or don’t claim it at all. Gift-giving Something else to consider is when an employer provides employees with gifts of appreciation. Provided that these gifts are infrequent and not over $300.00 they are usually

an acceptable income tax deduction and GST credits can also be claimed where applicable. These include flowers, wine, perfumes, gift vouchers and so on. Such gifts are classified as non-entertainment gifts and when given to staff members do not fall within the FBT rules. Although the above examples of gifts are generally claimable gifts such as concert and sporting event tickets and holidays would be classified as the provision of entertainment to employees and therefore not deductible and potentially subject to FBT, depending on the amount and frequency of the gifts provided. Generally a tax deduction and GST credit cannot be claimed for these gifts as they would come under the minor benefit rules, provided that their GST inclusive value does not exceed $300.00. Likewise, the very same rules will apply to the provision of gifts to business associates such as valued customers and suppliers. We hope this helps your organisation of the year end celebrations, and lets everyone enjoy this time year.

Blood, Sweat & Cheers Your guide to sport in Glasshouse Country

Beerwah High Celebrates Excellence in Sports The annual Sports Awards Night for 2012 was held on Monday, October 29 in the Student Centre. Guests and students were entertained by Will Audley’s band, our junior and senior dance companies as well as our energetic and talented cheer leaders. Ms Wallace was our special guest at this year’s Sports Awards evening. She became the Australian 200m breast stroke champion at the 2012 Olympic trials in Adelaide and was a semi-finalist in this event at the London Olympics. An inspirational question and answer segment conducted by the 2012 Open Boys Swimming Age Champion, Mitchell Harvey, and current Tibberoowucum House Captain, Naomi Welstead-Findlay together with Olympian, Ms Tessa Wallace, provided an interesting insight into the requirements of a top level athlete. We would like to thank and congratulate our house captains and co-ordinators for 2012. The challenge commenced at the beginning of the year with our cheer cup competition and finished with our two-day athletics carnival. The house captains received awards on behalf of their house.

A highlight of our sporting year would have to be our 18th consecutive win in the Beerwah District Athletics competition. This shows just how dedicated and competitive our staff and students are in this area. Congratulations to all of our Junior and Senior Sportsmen and Sportswomen for 2012 with special mention of some of our major award recipients. Indigenous Award for Excellence in Sport - Dylan Valentine (winner for the 5th year in a row) Junior Female Allrounder Award - Caitlin Powter Junior Male Allrounder Award - Mitchell Chalmers Senior Female Allrounder Award - Rae Austin Senior Male Allrounder Award - Connor Bosch Junior Sportswoman - Rhonda Byrnes Junior Sportsman - Rowan Sutton Senior Sportswoman - Jess Haig Senior Sportsman - Mana Taripo Most Outstanding Athlete in Athletics - Mana Taripo

Contributed by Jenny Kelly Thursday saw 64 girls play an 18 hole Foursomes for trophies donated by Helen Thompson and Julie McMahon. There were some pretty good scores recorded, the best being a 68.5 Nett, brought in by Deb Carlton and Michelle Leahy, a visitor from Caloundra. They were followed by Runners Up Monica Dangerfield and Jen Kelly who came in with a 71.5 Nett. NTP's were Pam Gormley and Lyn Nichols on 2, Lydia Costello and Rosemary Collins on 5, Lea Garner and Barb Drury on 16 and Deb and Michelle took out the 18th. The Ball rundown went to 74.5. The last of the Club Honour Board events held over Saturday and Sunday, November 10 and 11 decided who will win the Beerwah Cup for 2012. Only the most hardy of players ventured out to compete in the Beerwah Cup this year, played on the weekend at Beerwah Golf Club. This competition is the last of the Club's Honour Board events and is held over two days. Anyone can win this one as it is a Nett event and anyone with a handicap, who can play well for two days, can win. It was no mean feat to play consistent golf over last weekend, with rain and wind on Saturday and a bit of a gale on Sunday. That wasn't enough to put Studley Pritchett and Noelene Annakin off stride, with Studley taking out the Men's competition and Noelene winning the Ladies. Studley, off a handicap of 17 carded rounds of 72 and 71 for a two round Nett total of 143. Noelene, playing off a handicap of 19, scored 74 and 76 for a two round Nett total of 150. Congratulations to you both, it's a great feeling to have your name on one of the Honour Boards in the Club House, and as for the rest of us, well, there's always next year.

He described a typical day as follows ..."Well, yesterday, I took a five hour walk about 7km through some pretty rough terrain. I waded along the edge of a lake. I pushed my way through brambles. I got sand in my shoes and my eyes. I just avoided standing on a snake. I climbed several rocky hills.
