Hi Everyone Well Spring is definitely here and in Peachester on Saturday the hall was alive with spring at the Horticultural Society’s Spring Flower Show. Having a wander around the hall looking at all the beautiful cut flowers on show is a relaxing way to start Saturday, but I have to say it was the kid’s vegetable creations from the students of Peachester State School that really caught my eye. Having always been a fan of Mr Potato Head, I really loved the individual decorative approaches the kids had used – and for anyone who loves a bit of bling, what could be better than a tinsel covered vegetable. It wasn’t just the Peachester students that were kept busy on the day, the very cluey P&C mum’s also used the chance to promote the School’s upcoming Centenary
Celebrations to be held on Saturday, October 15. The celebrations will include all the traditional fun of a school fete including sample bags, rides, market stalls and entertainment, as well as modern classroom displays, a period costume competition and memorabilia. I expect it will be a huge day for Peachester and the many former students who attended the school. I am not sure that International Golfer Ian Baker Finch will be there on the day – but I am sure he will spend some time on the day to reflect what a truly lovely school it was to attend. Regards,

Tony Long, Beerburrum local and Manager Marketing and Merchandise of Mission Watoto Australia says he gets some strange looks from friends when he tells them he’s going to be spending his holiday helping to build a village for orphan children in Africa.
"It may not be a common overseas destination for Aussies, but I cannot wait to get to Uganda, a country torn apart by war and devastating disease, to help build classrooms as part of the latest Mission Watoto Australia experience," Tony said. He will be joined by local workers from the Kampala area and volunteers from across Australia when he takes off on September 14 as part of two teams heading to the Suubi 2 Watoto Village in rural Uganda. They travel with one clear goal in mind, to assist Ugandan orphans in the hope that they might make some difference in helping to house and educate some of the 1.8 million parentless and destitute children living in Uganda. Before setting off on this life changing trip, Tony and the team members who have to fund their own expenses, have been busy raising $34,000 towards the cost of building and furnishing two vocational classrooms. "Once in Uganda, they will also forge a very special bond with the children of the village, as each team will meet the 12 disadvantaged children they have sponsored to assist them in the future," Tony said.

Tony Long in Uganda Mission Watoto Australia has been working to help build and finance Watoto villages since 2006, with previous volunteer teams building houses, school classrooms and a child care centre. In each of these homes, eight children and a house mother will become a family for life. By helping to build these villages and creating a family atmosphere for parentless children in Uganda, Tony knows he can give them the opportunity to be loved, cared for and educated. He believes that with guidance and support, these destitute children will become the new generation of leaders in Uganda. Alan (Hollow Log Homes) Yvonne, Trish, Gwen, Art, David and Cliff from GMAN For a dazzling smile that will make you shine and stand out from the crowd, simply call the Diamond Dental Care Team today. The whitening process takes approximately two to three weeks, so please allow enough time before your special events.
The volunteers of local environment group Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network (GMAN) always try to acknowledge the day by doing something environmental. This year they organised putting up of five nest boxes in parkland at the end of Page Street in Glass House Mountains, a site where they previously revegetated the area. “This is an area which wouldn’t have many old growth hollows,” said Gwen Malcolm, Vice President of GMAN. “By putting up nest boxes we’re providing homes for wildlife that may not be able to find anywhere to live in this area.”
Early and late appointments available We’re above Suncorp at the entrance to Woolworths! 5 minutes north of the Ettamogah Pub Shop 4, Chancellor Village Bus. Centre, 1, Chancellor Village Boulevard, Sippy Downs
It is hoped the nest boxes will become home to sugar or squirrel gliders, possums, birds, microbats or even boobook owls. This is the third time GMAN has organised nest boxes in public areas. The other sites were at Settlers Park and the Historical Camping Ground on Old Gympie Road. The nest boxes were made and installed by Hollow Log Homes. Alan and Stacey Franks started the business in 1999 and since then they have put up over 14,000 boxes. Alan said it was important to put nest boxes at the Glass House Mountains park because of the lack of hollows. “Enhanced plantings like GMAN has done here is providing an awesome amount of shelter and food for all sort of critters, but because there’s such a high percentage of them that are hollow dwellers it’s a perfect site,” he said. The quickest time Alan has seen nest boxes utilised by fauna is 10 minutes. No doubt this is because Alan and his wife, Stacey, put a lot of research into Australian hollow dependent fauna, including working with Universities and Government scientists. As part of regular audits, Alan gets to see firsthand the fauna benefitting from the boxes. “I’m always thrilled,” he said, “I’m really excited that they’ve chosen one of our boxes.” Alan said it’s also important to realise that ‘common’ animal species need looking after as well as threatened species because sometimes it doesn’t take much for them to go from common to threatened. “We’re the backup,” he said. STEPPING OUT PODIATRY talks about
DIABETES AND YOUR FEET When diagnosed with type 1 or type 2 Diabetes there are changes that happen to your body. Your FEET may be the FIRST SIGN that your body is changing. Those diagnosed with Diabetes are at risk of: • Nerve changes causing burning, tingling or neuropathy (reduced sensation) in the feet. • Reduced circulation in the smaller capillaries (tips of toes) and well as an accelerated ‘hardening’ of the larger arteries to the feet and legs. • Changes to the soft tissue flexibility due to excess glucose in the blood • Bacterial and fungal infections in the feet. With poor sensation in the feet we are not able to detect cuts, wounds or foreign material (eg. rocks) in our shoes. Reduced circulation creates problems with wound healing and poor tissue quality. Keeping a check on your DIABETIC FOOT HEALTH is essential for minimising the risk of ulceration and further complications. Many of the people that Podiatrists treat are unaware of the problems associated with feet and Diabetes. It is recommended that you have a Neurological (nerve) and Vascular (circulation) assessment every 6-12 months. Those experiencing any difficulty reaching to cut toenails or painful corns and callous should also be receiving regular treatment every 6-8 weeks.

Relay for Life
Talented local shines
Not only has Beckie participated in nine Penrith Relay for Life events every year since then, she is also about to take part in her 5th Maleny Relay for Life at the Maleny Showgrounds. Around 30 teams will commence the relay at 3.00pm Saturday, October 8 and finish 9.00am Sunday, October 9. The event isn’t just about raising funds, it’s also a way to show support for cancer survivors and their carers. “Before we start the relay we have a survivors and carers afternoon tea. They make a big banner and they put their handprints on that,” said Beckie. “Survivors do the first lap to open the relay. There is also a candlelight ceremony at about 7.00 o’clock.” While it is an emotional journey, the event is also about having fun as well. Teams can dress up in costumes. Each year Beckie’s team dresses in pyjamas, which seems very appropriate for a relay that goes all night. So why does Beckie participate every year? “The atmosphere, seeing people that you know from previous years, the community spirit, it’s a great event. It’s about the fun and raising money. It’s family orientated, with games for kids; in the middle of night there’s a movie tent for kids. During the day there’s games and races. The kids have a ball.”
Andrea won three gold medals and one silver medal at the Eisteddfod which was held during the month of August at various venues on the Sunshine Coast. Her winning performances were in the Woodwind Category playing flute and in the Vocal Categories for Music Theatre and Contemporary. Her silver was in the Vocal Category for an Age Set Piece singing in German. Even though Andrea is no stranger to winning medals - having found success at previous Eisteddfods - she remains endearingly modest about her achievement. Andrea has been playing the flute almost three and a half years and singing since she was very young. Her grandmother Liz is her accompanist and singing teacher. “She helps me get the high notes,” Andrea said. Andrea has a flute teacher and spends one and half hours every day practicing the flute and singing. This year Andrea has also been enjoying being part of the Australian Youth Choir. Talented Andrea doesn’t just love music, but sport as well. “I take after my mum for the sporting category and my uncle and grandma for Andrea Little music,” she said.
Year 8 Glasshouse Country Christian College student, Andrea Little, would love to be part of the Opera Company in Sydney one day and perform for her family and friends. If her recent success at the Sunshine Coast Junior Eisteddfod is anything to go by, then that goal is certainly a possibility.
Beckie Newing from Beerwah knows what it’s like to see someone you love with cancer, her step-mother passed away nine years ago after her battle with breast cancer. Just a few months later Beckie took part in her first Cancer Council Relay for Life Event in Penrith, NSW.
Beckie Newing The relay has one person from each team walking or running the circuit, but it’s not a race and everyone goes at their own pace. “The relay is a comparison to the ongoing battle pm with cancer, it doesn’t just stop afterm an 6 hour – o r f it’s a journey,” said Becky. g u A 2th TIALthis ri 1 Up until year Becky had her own Fthis ENteam, ESS S G N year she’s in theO Cancer Council Team, the Red I K BO Bandanas. “It feels great to do my bit towards making a cancer free future one day. That’s the goal isn’t it, there’s too many people affected by it,” she said. This year there will be stalls set up with things like crafts, cakes, glow products and food. Donations can also still be made on the day. Beckie would love to see lots of people drop in, even if it’s just for half an hour. “I’d just like people to have a look,” she said, “because once they have a look that’s when they’ll get involved - once they understand what Relay for Life is about.”

Local trainer a finalist in business awards A personal weight loss journey has led Glass House Mountains resident Bianca Aiono to not only create a successful business but also become a finalist in the 2011 Sunshine Coast Business Woman of the Year Awards which were held at Caloundra on August 27. Bianca was a finalist in the category of Sports Woman of the Year for her contribution to sport in recreation and fitness. “I was thrilled because it’s a really motivating group of women to be a part of and I’ve met a lot mentors and role models,” Bianca said.

Bianca Aiono, finalist in Business awards
“People have become my closest friends through the network, so it was really exciting.” Bianca started her Sculptlife Personal Training business three years ago. “It started with my own struggle with weight. After I lost 15 kilos and competed in a body sculpting competition - and won - I decided to quit my own job and go into business for myself.” Her business focuses on training boot camps for women, outdoor fitness challenges, resistance classes, one on one training and more. “We’re pretty much known for getting great before and after photos, real body transformations, because we are the personal training group that concentrates a lot on nutrition as well,” Bianca said. She believes being passionate about your business is important. “Getting myself out there and meeting great people in the community has helped me establish a very close network and a good profile in the community as well as on the coast.” In addition to being a finalist in the awards, other business highlights include being shortlisted to be a trainer on The Biggest Loser in America this year. And Bianca is currently working on her own internet fitness show. The overall winner of the Women’s Business Awards was Kim McCosker of 4 Ingredients cookbook fame. All winners and finalists are seen as role models for other women in business. “My advice is to reach out to other business women who are achieving success in the community who you admire,” Bianca said. “As soon as you surround yourself with likeminded people, a lot more doors open up and a lot more opportunities happen. Plus it’s about really getting to know on a personal level your clients and what they’re looking for.”

BOQ team urges support for Day for Daniel Twenty four BOQ branches are throwing their support behind Day for Daniel. They’re selling the distinctive red merchandise including pens, badges and wrist bands in the lead-up to the Day for Daniel on October 28. BOQ Beerwah Branch Manager Jeff Willis said the recent confirmation of Daniel’s death made raising awareness of the Day for Daniel more important than ever. “It has been just heart-breaking to watch the events unfold over recent weeks; I can’t begin to imagine what Bruce and Denise Morcombe have gone through over the past nearly eight years but I do know that if we can prevent this ever happening again, that’s what we need to do,” said Jeff. “That’s why we are again urging customers and other locals to drop in to the branch and pick up some Daniel Morcombe Foundation merchandise this year. ”Not only are you helping our kids understand what they can do to be safety smart, you’re also helping raise funds for the Daniel Morcombe

All about literacy
Last week was officially Adult Literacy Week (September 1 - 8) and the Beerwah Library Literacy Group celebrated by doing a presentation to the Sunshine Coast Libraries Literacy Coordinator, Mignon Fanton. Each student had prepared their story based on the theme ‘My Learning Journey Takes the Next Step’. The students took advantage of the new technology available at the library, to record and publish their story in digital format their next step! The Information Technology equipment has been sponsored by the Rotary Club of The Glass House Mountains Inc. for the Friends of Beerwah Library, funded by a Sunshine Coast Council
Beerwah Library Literacy Group
Community Grant and supplied by Retravision, Beerwah. Using Microsoft Word and inserting images into documents, the students created their own story. These are on display in the library foyer. They also utilised the equipment to access the internet via the library’s free WiFi to research Walking Maps for the Sunshine Coast www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and the swapit website www.australia.gov.au/swapit If you are having problems with reading, writing or numeracy, you are welcome to join the group and it’s free! Adult literacy classes are held at Beerwah Library every Tuesday 9.00am - 12.00noon.
Interested in a local Prostate Cancer support group? By Lea Parkes A meeting for people interested in forming a Prostate Cancer Support Group will be held at the Beerwah RSL on Thursday, September 22 from 5.30pm. The meeting is being organised by local community action man Bob McLean, who is well known in our community for identifying a need and then getting the ball rolling to find ways of improving the situation. Bob has been the driving force behind establishing the Glasshouse Country Menshed that operates from the Beerwah Resource Recovery Centre each Wednesday morning. Bob said one of the primary goals of the Menshed was promoting men’s health. “After being diagnosed with prostate cancer and having surgery it quickly became obvious to me
how prevalent this disease is and that there was no local support group for those suffering from it,” he said. “In the past six months I have met at least two men each week who have been diagnosed with some form of prostate illness requiring treatment.” The Sunshine Coast Prostate Cancer Support Group which meets in Maroochydore identified that the formation of another group on the southern end of the coast would be beneficial to support residents of Blackall Range, Caboolture, Caloundra and Glasshouse Country. “The expression of interest to form another support group to bridge the gap between Brisbane and Maroochydore has been encouraging enough to hold a meeting of those interested to form
another support group,” Bob said. It does not matter if you are one of the 40 per cent of men or the partner of a man over 40; you are invited to attend this formation gathering to be held at 5.30pm Thursday, September 22 at the Beerwah RSL opposite the Beerwah Train Station. To obtain more information give Bob a call on 0427 606 240 or send an email to bob.mcl@bigpond.net.au You may also wish to visit the Sunshine Coast Support Group web site which is supporting this project. http://www.prostate.org.au/articleLive/ pages/Sunshine-Coast. The information you gain in September 2011 may save your life.

Peachester Concert It was the first concert for the Ausfunk Peachester studio and it was rockin! Hardly a seat left in the house, the students performed routines learned in term one and two and a killer finale: Micheal Jackson Trilogy finishing on Thriller! A dvd of the build up from lesson time to rehearsal and snap shots of the year and growth of students, brought tears to parents eyes. Little Hoppers (three to five year olds) brought down the house with gorgeous sparkly tops and adding a few random dance moves of their own including one girl doing a handstand mid dance! Always a winner! Emma Hatcher, also part of the Champion Beerwah High School Cheerleading team, has been assisting Director Hayley all year. “The Peachester community has embraced
the Ausfunk Company. We are nurturing, no stress, no exams, just fun dance school and the Peachester students have thrived in this environment,” says Hayley. This studio is one of six Ausfunk Studios on the coast providing weekly classes, workshops, youtube channel for students to practice at home and support for safe online practices and building friendships. Due to growing numbers, Ausfunk will be moving to Beerwah State School next term. Joryn Clancy, Ausfunk Head Instructor will be commencing classes the first week back at school. Hip Hop and Funk Classes are open to all students from all schools, boys and girls. For more information go to www.ausfunk.com.au or call Director Hayley 0402 115 974.

Beerwah Kindy 50 years young Contributed by Nicole Goodwin Through some initial research it appears that 2012 marks the 50th anniversary of the Beerwah Kindy being in operation. Obviously this warrants much celebration, as we know there have been many people within our community that have worked, attended or been involved in the Kindy in some way. In this regard, we would like to hear your stories! If you have information that would help us please contact the Kindy by phone 5494 6346 or email beerwahkindy@aaptn.net.au During the term the children had the chance to dress up on Pirate and Mermaid day. The children found a pirate map which contained many clues and adventures to find the hidden treasure. They also sang pirate songs, made a pretend pirate ship to play on and ate pirate food. The children also enjoyed a recent visit from the Ocean Life Discovery Program. They all learnt so many interesting things about different sea creatures,
which many of the children have taken home to share with their families. The biggest highlight of the visit was getting to touch real sea creatures! Importantly the children were exposed to the importance of preserving the environment and the benefits of living in a way that protects the sea creatures that they enjoyed so much on the day. The FUNdraising committee is planning the annual Bush Dance for Saturday, October 29. More information and how to purchase tickets will be advertised shortly, keep your eyes pealed! Also a Bunnings sausage sizzle is planned for Sunday, November 13. Please come along and support these events.

What a busy term it has been at the Landsborough Kindy with lots of fun and learning happening. We’ve had visits from the local police and our favourite puppeteer Julie from Bee Happy Puppets, the making of presents for our dads for Father’s Day and now we are planning a pizza making day for the last day of term.
Next term amongst other things, we have our annual Kindy children and Dads night, and a visit from Ocean Life to look forward to. We will also be finalising our enrolments and groups for preprep aged children for next year, so if you would like to enquire about Kindergarten or arrange a time to visit us during a session, please call 5494 1248.

Someone once said that grandparents are people with silver in their hair and gold in their hearts. If that is true then these precious metals were in abundance as approximately 350 guests arrived at Glasshouse Country Christian College for Grandparents’ Day. First on the program was a concert in the chapel. The cute little preppies caused the cameras to flash all over the place as they recited ‘Oh be Careful Little Eyes’ with actions. The audience cheered the bravery of Year 4 as they danced and sung ‘Get Funky’ and everyone enjoyed the antics of ‘Gary the Galah’ by the College choir. After the concert, grandparents met up with their grandchildren in the large undercover area. There were squishy hugs, big wet kisses and huge smiles from children as they ran excitedly to greet their nanas and pops. Grandparents were led by hand to the children’s classrooms to see their work and then visited the library for the Book Fair and to have their photo taken with their favourite little people. A special sight was seeing grandparents reading books to their children in one area and children reading to their grandparents in other areas. It is said that grandmas never run out of hugs or cookies to give their grandchildren. GCCC Hospitality students baked their hearts out to make sure the grandmas didn’t run out of cookies for themselves. Three morning tea stations were set up with platters of raspberry muffins, chocolate chip cookies, scones with jam and cream and cheesecake slices to keep the special guests with enough energy to keep giving those magic hugs.

Internet Service Providers (ISP’s) And You! Our customers ask us these questions so often, we thought we would share the answers. If you have any computer related questions, please submit them to us via the contact form on our website - www.totalmicrosystems.com.au Q: How Do I Choose An ISP? A: Do Your Research! Ask friends and family about their experiences with their own ISP. Ask about how much they pay per month, how long the contract is, what their data limit is, the reliability of the service and what other extras the package comes with. If you have access to the internet, there are some great websites that let you compare ISP’s side by side so you can evaluate exactly what you’ll be getting with each of them. Remember its not all about price customer service plays a huge part as well. Q: My friend lives in Beerwah and has ADSL 2+, I live in Glass House and have been told I can't get broadband internet at all - why? A: The location of your home or office will often dictate the providers you are able to choose from. You need to be aware that Telstra own the infrastructure and then ‘rent’ out spaces to other companies. Each other company, i.e. Optus, Dodo etc will only have a certain allocation on that exchange. Once their allocation is full with customers, they wont be able to service any new clients in that area. If you go to a different company and are advised that broadband is unavailable - don’t panic! It may just mean you need to keep looking until you find a company with space in their allocation. In some cases, the only option for you will be Telstra. We do know that the exchange is mostly full in Glass House - and is desperately in need of an upgrade - so some of you will need to remain patient.
Computer Sales, Service & Support Quality, no-nonsense IT Support for your business - ITS THAT SIMPLE! Many businesses are moving away from having in-house IT techs. Google Plus - it’s a must! Last month we spoke about “Google Plus”, the new social network from, you guessed it, Google! Social networking websites in general seem to be popping up everywhere you look, all hoping to be the next Facebook or Twitter. Will Google Plus stand a chance of contending with these giants? Absolutely. The fact that this is a Google product means that people will be too scared NOT to get involved, so in terms of user numbers, Google Plus should instantly rank as one of the top five social networks worldwide. But how will Google Plus stand out from the rest? Why would you want to spend time getting involved with yet another online phenomenon? Well for starters, the services offered through Google Plus are extremely comprehensive. When logged into your social site you will by default be logged into your Gmail (email) account and your online suite of free Google Docs applications (similar to Microsoft Office). Secondly, Google Plus gives you greater control over your social networking. Instead of one friends list you will have different circles of friends, relatives, business associates etc. and can share different info with each. Google Plus also allows you to follow the actions and comments of another user (just like Twitter) and video conference with one or more users (just like Skype). Finally, any website which integrates Goole Plus can be 'Liked' by other users, which will have an effect on your site’s overall Google ranking when potential customers are searching for your services. Council in partnership with the community
Local community organisations will receive Sunshine Coast Council’s Community Partnership Funding and Sports Field Maintenance Funding over the next three years. One hundred and twenty seven local groups and organisations will receive over $1 million in funding under the Community Partnership Funding Program. Forty seven local sporting clubs will also receive a total of $564,330 under the new Sports Field Maintenance Funding Program. Division 1 Councillor Anna Grosskreutz said that the grants would be a great benefit for a number of community groups on the Sunshine Coast. “I’m delighted that council programs help community groups remain active and involved in our community,” Cr Grosskreutz said. The funding program is open to incorporated community organisations that make a significant contribution to the Sunshine Coast community. The objective of the program is to provide these groups with a degree of financial security to help them grow and prosper. Organisations in Division 1 receiving funding for the next three years under council’s Community Partnership Funding Program include:
•
Glasshouse Mountains Touch Association $1,000 • Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club $2,000 • Caloundra Pony Club $3,300 • Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors Worldwide $50,000 • Friends of Bankfoot House $1,361 • Landsborough and District Historical Society $8,000 • Hinterland Community Development Association of Caloundra $7,500 The Sports Field Maintenance Funding program will see council cover 70 per cent of the field maintenance costs of those sporting clubs granted funding. • The following clubs in Division 1 will receive funding for the next three years under the Sports Field Maintenance Funding Program: • Glasshouse Hinterland Australian Football Club Inc $6,941 • Landsborough Cricket Club Inc $6,941 • Beerwah Sportsground Committee $9,394 • Glasshouse Mountain Sports Club $18,718 In addition to the funding, council will work with the successful sporting organisations to build capacity, develop a maintenance agreement and sound maintenance practices to ensure their facilities are maintained to district competition levels. Council will also work with all successful organisations to build their capacity for good governance and sustainable practices.

Is your pet’s breath a hidden concern?
Vets Ian and Alicia Palmer of Beerwah Veterinary Surgery are reminding pet owners of the importance of dental checks for their pets this month. “To encourage locals to get dental checks for their dogs and cats we are offering free dental checkups for the rest of September, and a 10 per cent discount on any dental treatment they require,” said Dr Ian. Dr Alicia explained that it is easy to think ‘out of sight, out of mind’ when disease is hidden inside your pet’s mouth. “In practice I have seen many beloved pets for other reasons, when the problem was actually in the mouth. “One such occasion is a tooth root abscess causing an apparent eye infection. “Dental disease can also cause heart, kidney and liver disease,” she said. “The scary truth is that dental disease affects four out of five pets over two years of age, and many of the affected pets do not show any obvious behavioural or medical signs. "Our pets are often without adequate dental care until it is too late and they start losing teeth (or worse). Some of the team from Beerwah “So what can you do? Smell your pet’s breath. Bad breath equals Vet Surgery dental disease! For those pets with dental disease, a dental scale (under anesthesia) is often the best way to return teeth to a clean, hygienic state,” said Dr Alicia. “The best way to keep your pet smiling is by brushing every day. Feeding special dental diets, appropriate bones and dental treats may also help,” she said. Beerwah Vet Surgery is located at Turner Street, Beerwah and if you would like to make an appointment for your pet then give them a call on 5494 6277. Glasshouse Country View Club visited Sunstone Gardens Over 50’s Resort in Maleny for its September outing. The day started with morning tea, cakes and all manner of goodies. Fortunately the resort has stunning facilities including a three lane bowling green where our ladies could get in some useful exercise although bowling skills were stretched to the limit. Prizes were presented for various achievements including best gutter bowler, furthest from the jack, etc. The day continued with a tour of the resorts facilities including a large hall/ stage, dining facilities, cinema, library, gymnasium, craft room and swimming pool/spa complex. Next was a sausage sizzle cooked and served in the resort’s large barbecue area. Our President Margaret proudly received a cheque kindly donated by the Sunstone Gardens management. Many thanks to Sunstone Gardens for allowing us to use their facilities and the donation is greatly appreciated. The next View Club meeting will be held on September 21 at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club at 11.00am for an 11.30am start. We will be entertained by Helen Eddie who will give us a talk on Australian bush flower essences. Anyone who would like to join the View Club would be most welcome. Please contact Joy on 5439 9049 or Lydia on 5438 7894 who will be pleased to supply further information. Eurindi Clinic Acupuncture is part of an integrated system of primary health care, known as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and the goal of acupuncture therapy is to establish a healthier state of body function and to increase the capacity to cope with stress. Each person has an energy circulation to maintain good health. It is essential for the body’s energy as well as blood, to circulate in a continuous and unobstructed manner. In Chinese Medicine, Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years to establish this energy and blood flow by needling specific acupuncture points on energy pathways. Often an area or acupuncture point is warmed and stimulated by a Chinese herb, this process is called Moxibustion. These methods can provide effective treatment for a wide range of common health disorders such as pain relief for headaches, osteoarthritis, muscular problems, sciatica and back pain. It can also help with gastrointestinal disorders such as, nausea,
vomiting and abdominal bloating, also common cold, stress, fatigue and insomnia. Acupuncture may also be used to regulate general immune function and assist with disease prevention. Diane Retter is a qualified TCM Practitioner with over 20 years experience and is available for appointments at Eurindi Clinic, Beerwah on 0438 296 829 or email dnretter@yahoo.com.au

Cars on Show Photographing your car at a car show has advantages, but taking the time to choose and photograph it in a good location will bring results you can brag about. A classic location is on a cliff with the sea and sky as a backdrop. Following these simple guidelines will turn in some great shots of your pride and joy. Shoot at an angle towards the front corner of the car. Turn off the on-camera flash and have an offsider use a reflector (made from cardboard
Photo by Alistair and aluminium foil) to bounce the light into the car grille area and give it some life. Shooting low gives a dramatic effect but be sure all four wheels are evident. Also turn the steering wheel a little so the rim of the wheel rather than the tyre tread is to the camera.
Before releasing the shutter, check the car surrounds to be sure there are no unwanted intrusions to ruin the shot. Turn on the car’s head lights to make the car come ‘alive’. All hardtop cars should have all windows closed. Convertibles with the tops down should have all windows fully open. Use a tripod. If you are faced with low light conditions you will not be able to hand-hold the camera so your results will be blurred and disappointing. High or low angle shots add interest and excitement so be as creative as you wish. U3A Beerwah Grafx Group meets each Thursday at Beerwah Library.
Spring cleaning? Let Lifeline help Lifeline can help Sunshine Coast residents spring clean their homes by supplying one or more 240 litre ‘Wheelie collection’ bins. These bins will be delivered to people’s doors, collected and then replaced, making spring cleaning much easier and more convenient.

Ian Ezzy, Lifeline’s Greater Sunshine Coast Business Manager said the bins are a great way to save time and effort, while helping make life a little better for someone less fortunate. “Often at this time of year with the warmer weather approaching, people start to de-clutter their homes. We encourage individuals to think before they throw their old possessions out… maybe somebody else can use that?” “Our bins make the donation process as easy as possible. People don’t need to load their old goods into the car and drive to donation drop-off areas. Our collection bins are delivered directly, people fill them up, and then we come and pick them up again,” said Ian. “Anything can be donated, from kitchen crockery, clothing to children’s toys. If possessions are usable and in good condition, we want them.” “The goods Lifeline collects from these bins are sold through Lifeline shops in the Sunshine Coast region to help fund our 24 hour crisis line and other community services,” explains Ian. “So anything that can be donated will ultimately assist us to help people in times of need and crisis.” If you would like to order a Lifeline ‘Wheelie Collection’ bin, please contact Lifeline Kunda Park on 5409 1400 during business hours.

August has been a very busy period for the men at the Glasshouse Country Menshed. The month focused on learning new skills. The men come from different walks of life and bring with them a wide range of skills and life experiences that they are prepared to share. The work area is divided into special spaces to accommodate the different disciplines. The two wood lathes have been spitting chips, you might say. It’s been preparing to turn out the components for a range of wooden toys. Another group of men wished to learn how to sharpen tools and learn to use these wood working tools correctly. This group have now begun to prepare the timber to build garden seats which will be sold through the Saturday market at the Beerwah Resource Recovery Centre. One recent talk of the week was by one of the men who has considerable skill in photography, specialising in capturing fast cars in action on all types of racing tracks. So if you have some spare time on a Wednesday morning come join the men at 8.30am in the workshop at the Resource Recovery Centre in Roberts road Beerwah.

Upper classes of Peachester School at the time of the Jubilee in 1961. Do you recognise any of the students? One minute’s silence was observed in memory of pupils who had passed away. This was followed by the cutting of the cake by Miss Elsie Francis. The cake was made, iced and donated by Mrs A. Heidemann. The cake was in the shape of a book with the words ‘Peachester State School Jubilee, 50 Golden years, 1911-1961’ printed on it in gold. Around the edges of the cake were iced roses and leaves. The old and new schools were also depicted. Ian Hadwen, on behalf of the present-day pupils, welcomed past pupils. Mrs Smyth and Mr Percy Caswell responded. He thanked the committee for arranging the jubilee so that the ‘old pupils’ could have such a wonderful time. Decorations - an outstanding feature of the jubilee was the decoration of the hall, school and around the grounds. As the people entered the front gate they were greeted by the Chairman of the jubilee committee, Mr W. G. Walker. Then
they walked between two well kept gardens to a table where they were further greeted by Mr K. Cavanagh (secretary) and Mrs S. Grigor (treasurer). At this table they received a name tag and then joined the crowd of old friends to discuss many and varied subjects. A number of streamers and bunting were hung around the school. Palm leaves and the words ‘Peachester State School Welcomes You’ were arrayed at the front of the school. For information about the Centennial Fete planned for Saturday, October 15 please contact P&C President, Louise Lewis (5494 9621), or Secretary, Margie Jennings (5494 9083). www.gcnews.com.au

Congratulations mum
I would like to say a big congratulations to Rosemary (mum) and Garry of Mountain View Garden Centre on the recent sale of their nursery. They have done an amazing job creating a beautiful nursery and many gardens in the region and afar, would be at testament of this. I am sure mum will be missed by her customers and I will miss helping out at the Garden Expo each year! I, along with many others I’m sure, wish Rosemary and Garry all the best and every success in the future! I also wish the new owners the greatest success in their new venture. Local Government Boundary Review
The Electoral Commission review of the Sunshine Coast local government divisional boundaries is complete. In my opinion, as part of their ruling, a clear win for the township of Landsborough has been delivered. I base my comment on the fact that come the 2012 local council elections, the entire geographical area of Landsborough will be included in Division 1. This will rectify the consequence of the 2008 re-alignment, when Landsborough-Maleny Road was designated the geographical border separating Divisions 1 and 5. This in turn resulted in some Landsborough residents suffering the inconvenience of residing and working in two separate divisions within the same relatively small location. Our historic township of Landsborough has both challenging and opportune times ahead. These include but are not limited to various vehicle and pedestrian traffic issues, upward transit parking pressure and, on a lighter note, the proposed community parkland precinct. The ruling by the Commission thus ensures that after the 2012 elections the one councillor responsible and accountable to the entire township will be able to deal with matters arising with efficiency and understanding that was not previously possible. Full details of the Sunshine Coast local government boundary review may be found at www.ecq.qld.au Ann Ross, Sunshine Coast Council Division 1 Candidate
Woolworth’s Petrol Dockets
Last week I went into the local Beerwah Woolworths petrol station and handed in my shopper docket and at the same time, said to the attendant ‘I have left the school info on, the girls save them for our local schools.’ He replied that they are no longer able to do that – they had received a memo advising them of the changes. www.gcnews.com.au
I have also heard that two staff that didn’t follow the rules have been sacked from their jobs. My understanding is that the reason the staff are no longer allowed to save the dockets for their local schools is because it was costing Woolworths too much. If this is true, it would seem that Woolies do not have the interests of local school children or their staff at heart. Another interesting fact is that Woolworths and Coles appear to control petrol prices Australia wide, and if you take notice, since Coles dropped the price of milk to $2.00 they are about one to four cents a litre dearer than Woolworths from Beerwah to Sydney. Now Woolworths are getting into hardware, lookout chemists and banks, you’ll be next on their list. Brian Stallworthy Glass House Mountains
McDonalds should be denied
With reference to the decision on McDonald’s at Landsborough, it should be denied as it is far to close to one of the best used Children’s Playgrounds on the Sunshine Coast. It would be detrimental to the health of all the children attending it and they know this. The statement of providing jobs can be achieved irrespective of where McDonald’s is finally approved to build. Do not put temptation in the way of our children by building in an area where they are enjoying a healthy lifestyle without the ‘Big Mac’. Bob Moss Landsborough

All about Aphasia
We are promoting the Australian Aphasia Association’s All About Aphasia mini-conference being held on October 28 in Nambour. It is expected that people with Aphasia and their carers/family/friends will be attending from across the state. The conference will give people an opportunity to listen to positive stories from people with aphasia, hear from Speech Pathologists working with people with aphasia, as well as speak to people with Aphasia, their carers and Speech Pathologists. There are currently over 80,000 Australian’s who are affected by aphasia (Australian Aphasia Association, 2011). Public knowledge of Aphasia is quite low. Aphasia is a language difficulty caused by injury to the brain, primarily as a result of stroke, however tumours, aneurysms and head injuries can also result in Aphasia. The Australian Aphasia Association (AAA) is a support and advocacy association for people with Aphasia, their families and the professionals who help
them (http://www.aphasia.org.au/). Annaliese Oberauer, (UQ Fourth Year Speech Pathology Student) and Tania Quaglio (Speech Pathologist)
Dear Mr Powell
I, along with many users of the Range Road find your latest update not only frustrating and disappointing but bordering on disrespectful. Please correct me if I am astray with my times, but I believe the road was closed completely in 07 with serious structural problems and we have suffered ongoing partial closures and delays since. All residents and regular users of the road are well aware of the serious damage and repair technicalities; however for a carriageway of this importance to remain in an unsafe and unstable state of disrepair for this extended period of time would you not agree that it is a serious accident waiting to happen? If the Minister of Main Roads is unable or unwilling to furnish you with a more detailed report would he make he and his engineers available to host a public meeting on the Range Road and explain the following, 1. The years of inconvenience and risk; 2. The planned rectification work; 3. Approximate start/finish times; 4. Reasoning for work to proceed in peak period; and relevant questions from the people. We are not backblock yokels, Mr Powell, to be treated as mushrooms. Would this serious transportation problem been allowed to drag on to this extent on any other major arterial road? We wish you well in your endeavours to extract a more acceptable and educated reply from the Minister for Main Roads if it is at all possible. The Poddydodger Peachester
Daffodil thanks
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the shops, businesses, and schools that sold the display box merchandise. These businesses are from the areas of Beerburrum, Glass House, Beerwah, Peachester and Landsborough. A very big thank you to all the willing volunteers that helped sell the fresh daffodils and merchandise on the stalls over the Thursday, Friday and Saturday. A total of $11,674.00 was raised. May I also say thank you to the ladies of the Glasshouse Uniting Church Craft Group for making the jewellery as a little extra to sell on the stalls. I sincerely appreciate everyone’s help and support for another successful Queensland Cancer ‘Daffodil Day’. Glenda Halpin
Moving on at Beerwah Health Foods
After 13 years at the helm of Beerwah Health Foods, I am handing over to Keith Pearce from Mooloolah. Keith brings a lot of years’ experience as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Educator to the job, so he has a lot more expertise than I, when I first took over. This change comes with some relief at the thought of a break and good holiday, but obviously some sadness as well. My well known companion Jem and I have made a lot of wonderful friends in our time at Beerwah, and as we don’t live locally, probably won’t catch up with a lot of you too often. It’s been firstly humbling and then very rewarding to have so many come to me over time with health problems to assist with naturally, or good health to maintain. I’d like to thank all my local customers and friends for their support and trust you’ll continue to support Keith and all local small business. Best passing wishes to all for natural, true health. Aussie World’s new ride for the holidays Aussie World will be opening their latest ride, the Giant Slide this week, the aptly named ride is 46 metres long, 15 metres high and nine metres wide. Riders collect a mat at the base of the ride, then walk up to a lofty platform five stories high in the sky then slip and slide safely down. Aussie World general manager David Thompson said the Giant Slide is the second new attraction at the Sunshine Coast theme park following the successful opening of thrill ride Redback launched earlier this year. The slide is situated next to the Wild Mouse Rollercoaster and behind the Stockshed and Speedway Dodgems. There is no better time to visit Aussie World than right now to experience over 30 fun rides and games suitable for everyone. Entry is just $25.00 per person or $80.00 for a four person pass for unlimited rides all day long - this includes mini golf, new thrill ride Redback and brand new Giant Slide.

Hovard Road Safety, Maintenance and Quarry Rehabilitation For those who have recently written to council concerning the old Hovard Road quarry site I wish to inform that there is no intention to reuse the site as a quarry. However Council have commenced a number of actions which include assessing safety; bush fire mitigation and general clean up of the site, which may include part removal of vegetation and levelling of the soil mounds. These works will take place over coming months and are dependent on a range of factors including specialist reports, necessary approvals, weather conditions and availability of appropriate personnel and equipment. In regard to the condition of Hovard Road, Council’s Civic Works Services inform me that this road will be maintained to a safe standard.

Mooloolah River Waterwatch & Landcare Inc. We Care About Our Environment Steve Irwin Way, Mooloolah Ph: 07 5494 5074
Mooloolah Waterwatch takes Immanuel College Students on Catchment Education Tour Nine students from Immanuel College and their teacher completed a two day Catchment Education Unit in August with our Manager Jan Kesby. They monitored water quality, collected and sorted macro-invertebrates, planted 60 native trees on Mooloolah River, camped over on Mooloolah River floodplain and canoed the Mooloolah River from Sippy creek down to Pareeara canal. The students learned about health and biodiversity in and along the waterways, the difference between a healthy ecosystem and a degraded ecosystem, and how long it takes trees to grow from seedlings before our native
wildlife can use the tree. They also got to see how beautiful the Mooloolah River is before it reaches suburbia and the industrial centre with its concrete banks. The students also saw the amount of plastic bottles floating in the river, and the amount of siltation (from our landslips in the headwaters) in the bed of the river. They cooked their dinner and breakfast over a wood fire (not quite like the electric stove), and experienced burnt damper to munch on. Overall, the two day trip was exciting and the students learned a lot about the environment they live in.

stunning mature spiraea and ‘Aspasia Macarthur’ camellia. There are Salvias, aromatic herbs, oldfashioned China and Tea roses and a rainforest area. “When our children were at home we had a large productive vegetable garden that was replaced with the swimming pool,” says Michael Simpson. “We have always maintained that this garden is great for children as they never tire of the secret pathways and hidden corners. Our children spent years making cubbies in the hedges, digging up archaeological treasures and just being outdoors,” he said. Kureelpa Colour is a beautifully landscaped, colourful garden with many unique and quirky features. There will also be plant sales, home produce, raffles and stalls. All day there will be delicious home-cooked refreshments and a sausage sizzle kindly provided by the Palmwoods/Woombye Lions. The Shambles is located at 85 Western Avenue, Montville and will be open from 10.00am – 4.30pm and entry is $6.00 per person, and free for under 18’s. Preparing your home for market
Aussie World
Spring is here and we all know that is the best time to try to sell your home. As we are all aware in this tough property market buyers are very fastidious so preparing your home for sale is very important. First impressions really do count so ensuring the front of the house has ‘kerb appeal’ cannot be emphasised enough. Derek and Jenny This involves cleaning the windows, touching up any paint work etc. The gardens must be tidy with mown lawns, weeds and rubbish removed and maybe some nice plants or window boxes to make the front look appealing. If you have a pool this must be clean and sparkling so they can picture themselves having a dip!!! The interior of your home must be light and inviting. To create this, clean and de-clutter and de-personalise your home. If possible try to give the home a lick of paint in neutral colours. Kitchen and bathrooms need to be clean and work surfaces must be clear. In larger living areas define the areas such as dining or living. If you have pets make sure traces of them are removed when you are showing your home and the house feels fresh and clean. Some lightly fragranced candles are good to light prior to an open home just to make the home smell pleasant. Avoid heavy fragranced carpet deodorisers as these can be overpowering. Overall give your home a ‘spring clean’ and without spending too much money make sure it looks as best as it can. In this difficult market, it is essential you give buyers as little as possible to be negative about your home and more reasons to love it and see themselves living there. If you require an appraisal on your property please give Jenny at Mooloolah Property Sales and Rentals a call as they have waiting applicants ready to buy. Business feature 28 |

Spring Great gardens – creating the perfect pet / plant balance With Spring here and water restrictions easing, Queenslanders are looking forward to a great gardening season. And experts say that changes in our way of life have resulted in a shift away from the big backyard to smaller spaces that are designed to accommodate everything from productive gardens to the family dog. “People are finding smarter ways to utilise their outdoor space; from dwarf fruit and vegetables for smaller spaces, to growing systems that allow the freedom to garden up walls and on rooftops,” says Matthew Carroll from Nursery & Garden Industry Australia. Sandgate resident, Joshua Berry, said that he had made quite a few changes to his outdoor living space since moving into a smaller property with his Alaskan Malamute puppy Josie. “Alaskan Malamutes are rather active dogs, which has meant I’ve had to make significant changes to the backyard to allow for Josie to run around and exert some of this energy. As her particular breed is bred for cooler climates I’ve built a pergola that shades most of the backyard as well as an enclosure to shield her from our harsh Queensland weather. “It is possible to care for a pet in a small backyard, owners just need to be savvy about the needs of their particular breed,” Joshua said. The Petcare Information and Advisory Service says that pet owners are moving away from the idea that you need a big backyard to be able to care for a pet. “Our research shows that around 60 per cent of pet owners say that their pet spent
either more or equal amounts of time indoors as outdoors and that only 12 per cent of pet owners in high density areas said that not having regular access to a secure outdoor space was an issue for them,” says Susie Willis from PIAS. “The growing number of people living in high density or high rise accommodation are simply finding innovative ways to create a garden environment that is pet-friendly, even if it is a small balcony,” says Susie. The Petcare Information and Advisory Service suggests the following tips for creating the perfect pet / plant balance, whatever the size of your garden. The outdoor activities of your pet will vary depending on what type of animal it is, what breed it is and even what age it is. Be prepared to have plans in place for the active infant stage, knowing you can relax more in the placid later years. All outdoor areas should be secure so that your pet can’t wander. For dogs this includes fencing that can’t be jumped over or dug under. Cats can be kept secure in an enclosure that allows them to enjoy the fresh air without leaving your property. Grassed areas are a great option in a small outdoor area. Dogs and cats love to lie on grass, especially in warm weather. Section off a separate area of your garden for pet toileting and cover it with gravel or wood chips to encourage appropriate use. Many common garden plants are toxic to cats and dogs and your pets may take a bite just to see
how something tastes. Your local nursery may be able to advise you on plants that are non-toxic to pets or further information is available on www. petnet.com.au Dogs love to dig and even cats can cause damage to garden beds. You can surround the garden bed with a strong hedge or raise it to a level that your dog can’t reach. Some fertilisers attract the attention of pets more than others (eg. blood and bone, poultry manure). It may be advisable to use mineral fertilisers (typically non-smelly ones) in areas where your pets are driven to destruction of newly fertilised garden beds. Your local garden centre can advise you of suitable products. Always provide access to water and shelter against extreme heat or cold for any pet that is outside, especially if you are going to be away from the house for any period of time. If possible, provide access back to the house for your pet so it can choose when to be inside or outside. If you can provide a play area for your dog or cat it will help to prevent destructive boredom behaviour. Always ensure that any entertainment options will be safe for your pet if you are not directly supervising their play. “In the end, gardens are about enjoyment and sometimes it is easier to work out why your pet wants to do something rather than try and change its behaviour. It is possible to create separate areas where your pet can do his or her thing, as well as shared spaces that are great for people and pets. A pet-friendly garden can still be beautiful to look at and relaxing to live in,” says Susie.

INVESTING ON A LOW INCOME If you do your homework and have a creative approach, investing on a low income can be a great vehicle for long-term wealth creation.
Property choice is critical The best types of property for investors on low incomes are those at the lower end of the scale in price but with high rental returns. What sets your business apart from others that may offer a similar service? It’s now quite common to inspect water tanks when buying and selling property. A small problem fixed in the early stages is a lot better than waiting for it to turn into an expensive repair. I can also repair concrete metal tanks cheaper than you can buy another one. Contact Ian of Complete Tank Maintenance on 0403 187 517 or 3204 4910 for tank cleaning, tank repairs, tin and concreting and leaf guard protection, plus heaps more.

It amazes me the amount of tanks I see that have problems and are

Live, Love, Ride
Beegees
That was the theme behind last weekend’s Glasshouse Pony Club’s gymkhana, a day to honour the memory of Jessica Wall, much loved and dearly missed young member. Gymkhanas were perhaps one of Jess’s favourite pony club events and as her favourite colours were pink and purple, riders arrived dressed in her colours in honour her. Over 80 riders competed on the day and the great skill of the younger riders coming through caused hot competition. All of our riders enjoyed the day and for those at their first gymkhana it was a taste of what is to come. Our Glasshouse members showed were strong, earning themselves a trophy placing in nearly every age level. Cassidy Ferris – seven year olds - 2nd place and Glasshouse Pony Club highest under 8 points winner. Emily Collett – nine year olds – 3rd place
Big congratulations must go to the under 14 div 1 girls as they are the only team this year which has made it to the grand final. The girls have done well this year taking out the minor premiership which is a great honour in itself which makes this team the most consistent all year round. The girls played the final on Saturday, September 10. The girls showed great skills and determination in a very exciting match against Coolum. The final score - Beegees 0 Coolum 2. The girls showed their great sportsmanship and skill on and off the field. Thanks to the coach and manager for guiding the girls to the finals as well, this is the second year in a row that the under 14 team has made it to the finals, winning last year. So again girls don’t be discouraged with the loss - you win some and lose some Go The Green. The presentation for the juniors and seniors will be held on Saturday, September 17. The juniors will start at 11.00am in the club house, then at 6.30pm the seniors will start their presentation, all are welcome to come along. It costs $25.00 per head, there will be a meal and music and the bar will be open late. Contact Frank 0419 757 584 for bookings or the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club. The season has just ended but we are looking for under 16 men and women up for next year. If you are looking for a game please contact the senior coach Terry Jones 0418 721 456 or Frank 0419 757 584. So if you are new to the area and have played soccer (or not) before and would like to get involved in a great club contact us for a chat.

It was a day filled with laughs, calls of encouragement and some amazing skills. Our club was well represented and a couple of riders earned themselves a spot on the podium bringing home some well-deserved trophies. Both the under 11 Blue and under 15 Beerwah teams fell at the final hurdle on the weekend in their Grand Finals at Kawana. Under 11 lost to Kawana on Friday night at the Stockland Stadium in a very close and thrilling game 18-16 while the under 15 boys went down to Stanley Rivers 32-0. Well done to both teams who will be better off for the experience of playing in these games and can look forward to next season with much anticipation. The Junior Presentation Day was held at Beerwah on Sunday and the club would like to congratulate all the trophy winners and thank all the players, coaches and team officials who made it a very enjoyable season. Two of the major award winners on Sunday were Jack Fissenden who was awarded Junior Player of the Year (U11-12) and Brodie Oosen the Senior Player of the Year (U13-16) for their outstanding seasons.
The first round of the Ladies’ Consistency Singles on Wednesday resulted in Di Sutherland 154 def Dalija Wells 131 and Marleen Bertram 153 def Margaret Lehmann 117. In the social triples games W Blackbourne, P Jurd and Rae Farrrell 17 def R Ellery, M Dawes and Di Hunt 15, G Young, A Sillence and K Capern 24 def L Craven, D Sinton and D Hume 11 and in the pairs, N Dean and A Howard 20 def D Garland and R Scullion 16. Thursday’s ‘Open Pairs’ was won by Jo and Ross Siegle with two wins and a score of 40. The runners-up, being the ‘Winners of the Losers’, were Brian Saunders and Graham Saunders with the highest score of 20 in game 2. It was great to see 10 teams for the morning game and 12 in the afternoon. In the final round of the Men’s Pennant competition, Glasshouse played Caboolture Memorial (away) and went down by 11 shots. Bribie Island won the flag for Division 5. Anne Howard and Bill Tumbridge put up a great effort to become the 2011 runners-up in the Caboolture District Mixed Pairs in a match that went down to the wire in the final end on Saturday. Friday night bowls starts this week, September 16, with a game for members and visiting bowlers starting at 6.00pm. Please register your name on the booking in sheet if you would like a game. The format will be ‘Open Pairs’ with a few short games. It is a great opportunity for our newer bowlers to meet their fellow members and gain some experience in playing pairs. There will also be a roll-up for ‘barefoot bowlers’. New players and those interested in trying out lawn bowls will be made most welcome. Bowls are available at the Club and you will be given some assistance to get you bowling. All you need is flat soled shoes or thongs. For further information, contact Trevor Bertram on 5438 7058.

The science underlying the Fourth Way is ancient, although it has been forgotten. It is a science that studies man not just as he is, but as he can become. It regards man as having a possibility of evolving, and studies the facts, the principles and the laws of this evolution. Last night I watched Australian Story on the ABC. I was fascinated by the story of Jonty Bush who had suffered so much in her short life and yet rose above it. Her mother had a mental illness that meant that she was not able to care for her children. Jonty’s sister was brutally murdered and then her father was punched and died as a result of the punch. Jonty as a result of this had to raise her young brother. Jonty has gone on to champion the cause of the victims of crime and was in 2009 named as young Australian of the year. Bruce and Denise Morcombe have done a similar thing. The tragedy of Daniel’s disappearance and the developments of the past couple of weeks have presented them with a journey that at every point has been painful and heart wrenching. Yet from the beginning they have sought to use this tragic event to help others, and to particularly help to make sure children are safe, while always struggling to find answers as to what had happened to their beloved son. Once again last night on TV, Bruce Morcombe was expressing concern that all the media coverage of what
The forty-strong choir of Third Agers, will be conducted by Kath Jeffers and accompanied by pianist Peter Williams. The Sunshine Brass Ensemble will also perform. Musical highlights from ‘The Student Prince’, ‘The Phantom of the Opera’, ‘Brigadoon’, ‘Oklahoma’ and others promise a delightful hour or two complimented by a homemade afternoon tea. Not to be missed. All welcome. Tickets ($12.00) at door so do get there early. Free parking.
happened to Daniel might have a negative impact on other young children. His concern for them was real and genuine. They have taken this tragedy and continue to use it to help others. Last week in Brisbane there was another tragedy that left us all reeling when 11 people died in the one house fire. We watched as these people gathered together in their grief to support one another and to draw the wider community into their times of prayer and loving one another. What we saw was truly inspirational as this community struggled with such deep grief. These stories reflect something of how I understand God works in our lives and our communities. God sent Jesus into this world and the world threw its worst at Jesus yet God took that and turned it into something good and precious for the whole world. In the most difficult, tragic circumstances in life if we will let God love us and we will love one another then good will come of that and the world becomes a better place.
