SEPTEMBER 14 2016

Hi Everyone

L

ast Saturday we headed along early to the Hall at Glass House where celebrations were underway to mark 100 years since the Hall was officially opened. There was definitely an air of excitement with many long time and former locals catching up. I am not sure how many times I heard someone say, “gosh how long is it since we last saw each other?” There were lots of friends reunited on the day, and loads of memories shared, with lots of very proud (middle aged) locals pointing out the photos from their youth. I have to say that Vicki Heading from Beerwah Hair and Beauty did make a lovely cow girl at the Glass House Mountains State School Fancy Dress Ball. Mayor Mark Jamieson officially opened the day and in his speech made the comment that if the walls could talk how many stories could they tell. I imagine with the regular dances, balls, wedding receptions, parties and the like over the years, no doubt quite a lot of romances got underway, which in turn made a long-term impact on our community. Cricket’s best come to Landsborough Australia’s best under-17 male cricketers will converge on Landsborough for the 2016 National Under-17 Male Championships starting on Monday, September 26. The first week of the championships will be staged at three of the coast’s best cricketing venues – Maroochydore, Caloundra and Landsborough – with the second week of matches to be played in Brisbane. Reigning champions Queensland will be looking to keep their 2015 title north of the border, with strong southern teams making the trip to the coast. The final will be played at Allan Border Field in Brisbane on October 6. Corey Watson, Secretary of the Landsborough Loggers Cricket Club says that it has been a huge effort to get the work done before the carnival.

“The complex itself has received over $100,000 worth of new infrastructure funded through Sunshine Coast Council, which has provided for a new fence, permanent and portable side screens, removal of the AFL posts, new synthetic turf practice wickets, and an upgrade of the lights to enable night cricket,” he said. “The national championships will showcase what a fantastic facility we have for local cricket at Landsborough.” Spectators are encouraged to come along to the Tunnel Ridge complex at Landsborough, and check out the skills of some of the up and coming internationals of the future. Games will be played at the grounds on September 26, 27, 29, 30 and October 2 – more details can be found at www.nationalchamps.com.au/common/ pages/public/rv/draw.aspx?entityid=17240&id= RVFIXTURE

Australia’s (and quite possibly the world’s) oldest town crier, John Stevenson, is officially hanging up his ringer. After 45 years of dressing up in period costume, ringing his bell and making public announcements, the Maleny resident is set to retire at the ripe old age of 91. Born in the central London area of Clerkenwell, John came over to Australia and was living in Ipswich when he first came across the idea to become a town crier in the 1970’s. While Town Criers have existed for centuries in spreading official announcements and royal decrees overseas, the profession was not as common here in Australia – especially when John started over 40 years ago. A local lady at the time had thought that it would be great if every town had its own Town Crier to promote the local shops and businesses. John has always liked people and having had an entertainment background - working as a performer and clown in England, he decided to apply for the position. Since then John has worked all around the State. For many years he was involved with the Redcliffe markets and community events and was a regular feature in the annual ‘First Settlement’ re-enactments. John and his wife moved up to Maleny around 20 years ago and John has been a regular identity at the local RSL markets, putting on a bit of a show and leading community events and gatherings. “Now I’m starting to break up a little bit being in my nineties so it’s time to finally hang up the bell. It breaks my heart but it’s getting a bit too

hard dressing up and walking around. The best thing is that the kids all think that I’m a pirate! I’ve loved every minute of it!” said John. Last week, State Member for Glass House Andrew Powell MP visited John at his home to present him with a medal and proclamation certificate to mark his numerous years of community declarations and decrees. Andrew said it was a real honour to catch up with Mr Stevenson last week. "Can he tell a story or two! Mr Stevenson has been such an integral part of so many communities – Redlands, Redcliffe and Maleny (and he’s got the trophy cabinet to prove it) – and each of them has a soft spot for him.” “It’s my genuine hope that he doesn’t hang up the Town Criers bell, but rather finds someone worthy to continue his tradition!”

Wittafest this Saturday The organisers of this the second ‘Wittafest’ have worked hard to create a festival that is quite different to other festivals - they describe it as fiercely local, authentic and real. It is free, family-friendly and fun; an opportunity for the community to see itself by gathering and retelling Witta stories. The event takes place this Saturday from 10.00am – 6.00pm at the Witta Sports and Rec Grounds. This wonderful community event will include good food, beer, traditional games, historic displays, tours and a diverse program of live music with a focus on the era 1900 to 1929. Witta local Steve Chaddock has devised a display of images and stories of the era and surveyor Bill Kitson will be on hand to navigate you through the original maps of the area. In addition, your family may like to immerse themselves in the old children’s games, supplied by the team from Maleny’s historic homestead, Pattemore House all day and from 1.00pm – 1.30pm there will be races.

If you love dressing up, the Steam Packet photo booth provides a range of outfits to have your portrait photographed for only $10.00 as a fundraiser for the Witta Rec Club. Tours of local lanes, cemetery and church will be running all day and will provide visitors with insights into this community rich in history. There will be a number of cemetery tours taking place, one at 10.30am, 12.00noon and 2.00pm. In the morning, tours of Bergans Lane will be led by Chad Oliver and in the afternoon these will be led by Spencer Shaw. Tours of The Good Sheppard Lutheran Church will leave at 10.00am, 11.00am, 2.00pm and 3.00pm; the church will also be open throughout the day for people to wander through independently. There will also be displays at the old school throughout the day and a roll call at 1.45pm. The line-up of live music is great and showcases just some of the depth of local talent, as well as quality period musical performers who will entertain the crowds throughout the day. This year the focus of the time period is from 1900 to 1929, so the day will be starting off with a classical and folk music tradition as well as some chorus and individual singing and work our way through to the late 1920s and early jazz. The program includes local harpist and viola player Kim Kirkman, an impressario who also sings in German, and the excellent folk music of McKay & Wright who sing in Scottish (pictured left), equally, the combined vocal force of the Maleny Singers will likely raise emotions.

Sofia Bahnson and Rebecca Paltridge By lunchtime, the program moves into a more folksy and playful mood with the classic folk rhythm of Strings and Keys and also the infectious oompah of the Rubatuba set. As the afternoon draws in more fully, things evolve into an early jazz or Dixieland era with Trevor Hart & the Futurists who will beguile us with their smooth, sometimes jinking, melodic sounds. Steve Chaddock who established Wittafest in 2015 says: “we are the guardians of remarkable stories and fascinating photographic images from the past. We re-make the past in the present by re-casting these stories in our modern day world, for the benefit of both old and new residents and visitors.”

Maleny local Adrian Butler has been behind a long running worldwide campaign to have the previously accepted ionization smoke alarms replaced by reliable photoelectric ones. On August 31, the Queensland government passed legislation that mandates from January 1 next year, all new and substantially renovated homes must be fitted with interconnected photoelectric alarms in all bedrooms and hallways outside of bedrooms. On the back of numerous house fire tragedies involving ionization smoke alarms, the State of Queensland along with the Northern Territory now leads the way for the other states and territories to adopt a new era of residential fire protection. Adrian Butler is a man driven by public interest causes. He is the chairman, co-founder and former full time fire fighter who established ‘The World Fire Safety Foundation’; the not-for-profit lobbying and fire safety education organisation in March of 2000. Previously Adrian had been involved in successful public advocacy campaigns raising awareness about issues within the insurance and banking industries. It was the experience he gained through these campaigns that gave him the stamina to invest considerable time and effort over the last 16 years lobbying to change industry and public perception about the ionization smoke alarm. He sought to raise awareness and seek change to address the devastating inefficiency of these commonly used units.

In 1998, Adrian and his business partner Karl Westwell owned a New Zealand security franchise that stocked ionization smoke alarm units, selling thousands to customers throughout Australia and New Zealand. When customer complaints started to come in, the business operators began to question the efficiency of these units and decided to do some more research. What they discovered was startling, as they uncovered published reports as far back as the 1980’s from the United States recommending that ionization units put lives at risk. During this period, The U.S. International Association of Fire Chiefs found effective response fault with ionization smoke alarms and recommended the use of photoelectric smoke alarms. A simple test was suggested to clarify the matter using a soldering iron left on a couch – this in turn would cause a smouldering fire which was detected significantly quicker with a photoelectric alarm than an Ionization smoke alarm. In 2000, Canadian TV aired a documentary about the perils of ionization alarms which highlighted a tragic residential fire which resulted in a landmark court case against the manufacturing company. When Adrian started his campaign to challenge the widely accepted belief that ‘working smoke alarms save lives’ he thought that he would be able to get the message about the importance of using the right type of unit (photoelectric as opposed to ionization) across relatively easily - it has taken nearly 16 years for the current legislation to be passed.

Louie Naumovski, Founder, Logan House Fire Support Network and Neil Reid, Assistant Commissioner, Queensland Fire & Emergency Service with Adrian Butler, Chairman, World Fire Safety Foundation at Parliament House The main differences in the units is that ionization units offer poor protection for smouldering fires (a leading cause of death), contain radioactive material and are prone to emit excessive false alarms – whereas photoelectric alarms offer good protection, contain no radioactive material and emit fewer false alarms. Adrian references Government CSIRO data as well, as that indicates that ‘working’ ionization alarms do not respond reliably to the presence of visible smoke. In October 2014, 60 Minutes aired a story about the perils of ionization alarms which was aired both here and in New Zealand and assisted in dramatically raising the public profile of the issue. During a 2015 senate inquiry into smoke alarms, Australia and New Zealand’s most senior fire official and President of the

Australasian Fire & Emergency Service Authorities Council, Commissioner Greg Mullins, warned that ionization smoke alarms should be banned and therefore added considerable weight to the argument. While Adrian is elated about what has happened in Queensland, campaigning to make this legislation applicable throughout Australia and the rest of the world continues. “Since 2000 we’ve said ionisation alarms should be banned. That’s finally been vindicated by Commissioner Mullins brave stand and Queenslands new photo electronic-only legislation,” said Adrian. The new legislation will involve a 10 year residential rollout with leased or sold houses requiring compliance after five years. To find out more visit www.SmokeAlarmWarning.org

An author and illustrator who studied the creative arts, from undergraduate to doctoral level at the University of the Sunshine Coast in the past decade, is celebrating a London publishing deal and the launch of his second novel about 1880s English serial killer Jack the Ripper. Dr Dean Jacobs, of Glass House Mountains, is launching his thriller, ‘Return to Whitechapel: The Ripper’s Knife.’ Dr Jacobs said his new book, a sequel to ‘The Streets of Whitechapel’, was written as part of his USC Doctor of Creative Arts, which also researched the relationship between written and illustrative texts. “My book has been published by Austin Macauley Publishers and our 7 September launch date coincides with the death of the second Jack the Ripper victim, almost 128 years ago to the day,” he said. “The story explores the depths of the human psyche, beneath the skin of a madman, and one man’s internal struggle between good and evil.”

Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace said he was enthusiastic about the task ahead and determined to help deliver for the people of Fisher. “We live in one of Australia’s most iconic locations and I will work tirelessly to make sure we can provide jobs and opportunities for the future, while preserving the things that make the Sunshine Coast so special,” Fisher MP Andrew Wallace said. “I reaffirm my commitment to work with local, state and federal representatives to make sure the Coast grows and prospers.” Mr Wallace said one of his top priorities was to fast track upgrades to the Bruce Highway. “As one of Australia’s fastest growing regions we need a reliable link between the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane,” Mr Wallace said. “The Turnbull Government stands ready with a $6.4 million contribution towards the Bruce Highway Upgrade Planning Study and we again call on the Queensland Government to fast track this vital work so we can get on with the job of widening the highway.” Mr Wallace said there were many opportunities to grow the region’s economy through supporting local business and promoting innovation. “Whether it’s helping local entrepreneurs access new overseas markets, assisting people to gain new skills, or realising new community based employment through the National Disability Insurance Scheme, I am determined to stand up for the people I represent,” Mr Wallace said. “I said during the campaign that I would bring fresh ideas and a new approach for the people of Fisher and I won’t let you down.”

Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce update with Ursula Starkovsky Our next meeting on September 20 is shaping up to be very informative and interesting. The Chamber of Commerce has invited Adrian Allen, from Stocklands to give us an update on their plans for Beerwah East and Halls Creek Identified Growth Areas which are under review in the South East Queensland Regional Plan. I would like to point out that we will be hearing Stockland’s plans and ideas which might differ from what Council has in mind. It is important for all of us to know both sides; only this way we can make sensible and educated decisions. Development along the coast is still very controversial but it will come, whether we like it or not. As this does not just involve businesses but also the residents, the Chamber decided to open this meeting to the public. If you care about our region, you should come and listen! Club Glasshouse has kindly agreed to cater for us at a cost of $10.00 per person. We also have a lucky door prize donated by Aussie World. The Executive hopes to attract a large crowd for this informative gathering. Our CCTV project has now been completed and all cameras stream live, providing security for our business community. We have cameras installed in Glass House, Beerwah and Landsborough. This is a Chamber project funded by Federal Government. If you run a business, it is important to join an association that will represent business concerns and matters. Twinnies go viral!

By Sonia Clark Paula and Bridgette Powers have had a fantastic run of community support and donations recently on the back of a YouTube video that went viral around the world. Around 13 years’ ago, the girls were involved in a program about twins that aired on SBS. A couple of months ago and coming as a complete surprise to the Twinnies – someone overseas posted the footage onto YouTube - and to date over 3 million views of the footage have been seen! This ‘viral video’ has prompted an increase in media attention with Sunrise, Channel Seven, New Zealand TV and even the BBC making contact. A lovely result from this raised profile has been that more people have been made aware of the uniqueness of the Twinnies and the tireless work they do at their self-funded Bird Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre located in Landsborough. Following on from this, the Centre has seen an increase in donations and volunteers, which has been wonderful. The Powers family have been incredibly grateful for the increased community support for their facility. For example a man who wished to remain anonymous, generously donated solar panels, to assist the Centre in cutting its bills so they could afford to buy more fish for the birds. Another Coast business fixed the floors of the ICU unit and someone else anonymously paid for gravel to be laid outside the building. The local Sunshine Girls held a morning tea raising $600.00 which they donated to the Centre. “The Twinnies will never turn a bird away and the costs involved to keep the birds until next years’ migration date involve considerable weekly bills. "We are just so grateful to the local community for their support. We have a wonderful team here of volunteers and we want to thank everyone for their generosity,” said the Twinnies mum, Helen. The Twinnies Pelican and Seabird Rescue Centre is located at 2147 Steve Irwin Way, Landsborough.

Three shades of fugly

Three stand-up comedians, who work independently of the cruise lines, have decided to combine their talents into one big show. With three different styles of comedy the Fuglys can tickle you in different spots. Steady Eddy, Peter Grose and Kenny Bennett will appear at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club on Friday, September 16. Steady Eddy is well known throughout Australia. His comedy had taken him around the world and onto the silver screen starring in three Australian movies ‘Paperback Romance’ ‘Under the Radar’ and ‘Picnic’. His CD and video ‘Born to be Bent’ has sold 20,000 copies and he has performed in the UK, NZ, Canada and the USA. Staring at the Sydney Comedy Store, going on to appear on every TV channel and even to MC the Midnight Oil tour, Steady is truly a legend of comedy. Kenny Bennett former TV sports presenter, boxer, footballer turned to comedy in the 90s and has been a support act for Hermans Hermits from the UK, the Platters from the USA and Kernighan’s at Tamworth. He’s currently and for the past eight years with Princess and P&O Cruise lines as the headline act billed as ‘Australia’s Favourite Funny Man’. Peter Grose, musician, songwriter and stand-up comedian owned, wrote, directed and performed at Crazies Comedy Restaurant in Brisbane for 10 years, Review USA claimed the ‘Crazies is the place to go when visiting Australia’. He has performed in New York, LA, and the Edinburgh Comedy Festival. With the three different styles of comedy coming together as one this is one smorgasbord of laughs not to be missed. Endeavour Foundation’s Recycled Clothing store in Maleny is preparing for ‘spring clean madness’, as the local community sheds its winter woollens and looks forward to the warmer weather. Describing the process as “sometimes emotional but ultimately cathartic,” store manager Lorraine Whitson said that letting go of possessions can be difficult. “We tend to link memories to objects and that makes it difficult to move them on – no matter how under-used they have become. But, equally, if you can move past the emotion a household clear-out can be very liberating. “We find that, for a lot of people, the knowledge that their donation will benefit someone else really does help to motivate. “As an organisation we are reliant on quality donations – the funds we raise enable us to work together with people with a disability, supporting them to pursue their personal goals. That might mean moving into a new home, gaining qualifications or finding a job,” said Lorraine. “The unfortunate truth is that poverty, disadvantage and exclusion remain rife among the one in five Australians who have a disability. We are continuing to challenge inequality of opportunity at every level and on every front, but can only do so with the help of our generous supporters.” Lorraine said that a clear-out can also be a way of laying down a marker for a lifestyle change. “Whether you’ve changed jobs or retired, gained a little weight, lost a little weight, or moved to a different climate, your dress style can change dramatically. Fortunately, there’s always someone who will be only too delighted to snap up something that’s no longer useful to you,” she said. “We get donations of everything from pre-loved clothing and accessories to household bric-a-brac. Some people drop them off in-store, so they can browse and have a chat, while others find the white donation bin located at the rear of the building more convenient. Whatever way it’s delivered, it’s very much appreciated. “From this point of the year on, people start shedding their unwanted winter coats, hats, boots, shoes and gloves – all those things that have been hiding in the back of their closet. “If they are taking up space, Endeavour Foundation Recycled Clothing would love to take them off your hands! We welcome any good quality items for all ages and sizes.” You can drop items in the charity bin at the back of the store or drop them off in-store, the shop is located on Maple Street, Maleny. www.gcnews.com.au

Local Kids in Action Conference

First-time participants Montville State School achieved a great result at the 2016 Sunshine Coast Kids in Action Conference for their presentation on ecosystems around Montville and the lifecycles of the Richmond Butterfly and Giant Barred Frog. The students earned a highly commended in the Kids Choice Award to take back to their Montville State School school. Ananada Marga River School won the Kids Teaching Kids Choice Award for the most dynamic display, which showed how to experiment with eco-dyes to make sustainable fabric pieces, using local native plants and vegetables, like onion skins and purple carrots. They joined more than 350 students and teachers from 25 Sunshine Coast schools – including kids from Beerburrum State School, Blackall Range Independent School, Conondale State School, and Conondale Home Ed group – for the annual two-day event. Environment Portfolio Cr Jenny McKay said programs like Kids in Action helped spark passion in our kids, showing them they can make an environmental difference today, and into the future. “This year’s theme ‘living communities’ encouraged us to think about how our community relies on a healthy and natural environment to grow and thrive,” Cr McKay said. “All year, students worked hard on their conference presentations, challenging one another to think differently about their role in our community. “The event was a great opportunity for like-minded kids to come together and spread their knowledge, understanding and passion for the environment.”

Ananda Marga River School Unitywater environmental affairs manager Kylie Crouch said preserving the local environment is hugely important to them at Unitywater and this conference fits really well with their values. “Our water testing activity taught students about Unitywater’s role in the community and how we help protect the environment by using safe sewage treatment practices,” she said. Kids Teaching Kids creator Arron Wood said to continually involve students in decision making provides them with the necessary responsibility for ongoing action. “This is a thoroughly enjoyable event that is a credit to local organisers,” he said. If you would like to be part of Kids in Action 2017 submit an expression of interest on council’s website. Partly funded by the Sunshine Coast Environment Levy, this project has run annually for five years and was recently shortlisted as a finalist in the United Nations Association of Australia World Environment Day Award.

Support Australian Made

Business feature Working for a large Steelworks company near Wollongong, Andrew Wilkinson knows how important it is to support Australian designed and manufactured products. A fitter and turner by trade with over 20 years experience; Andrew has witnessed firsthand the effects of the downturn in the Australian manufacturing Industry. Earlier this year, Andrew was made redundant from his full time position and with a family to support he was keen to seek opportunities that would best utilise his skills. With limited local opportunities in the casual market, Andrew was keen to ensure his own future and use his initiative to create his own opportunities by becoming a small business owner. Andrew had previously run a small business installing garage doors, and so the opportunity to create a business installing Transportable Shade Sheds which would use his practical and mechanical skills seemed ideal – especially with the additional advantage of introducing the product into his local region. In deciding to become a Transportable Shade Shed Reseller, the fact that products are 100% Australian designed and manufactured was extremely important. Having worked in the local manufacturing industry, Andrew was keen to support Australian made products as much as possible. Another factor in his decision to become a reseller was the durability and excellent quality of the products and the fact that it wasn’t a franchise. “I am impressed by the quality of the product. Being a fitter by trade, when I read all the product specs I can see the durability of the construction and quality of the materials used. For example I can immediately see the materials used for the framing is very good,” says Andrew. In becoming a reseller, Andrew has received a mobile custom built trailer, tools and a free 6x6 shed, as well as comprehensive sales training and installation training – all this is backed up by additional online mentoring, social media and direct marketing support for the products through the Transportable Shade Shed collaboration with Saver6.com. This has allowed Andrew to have additional sales and marketing support and leads generated which compliments his own business endeavours. Although Andrew has now picked up casual work at the Steelworks, he is keen to secure his future by establishing his own business with a view to running a fully financially viable business. With almost limitless potential to sell this adaptable all weather product, Andrew is enthusiastic about the sales possibilities in his area. Suited to the local demographic and region, opportunities exist from retiree caravan and boat shade cover, to rural machinery and industry cover – all leads that Andrew and his business Illawarra Shade Sheds will be pursuing. If you know someone looking for a Transportable Shade Shed around the Illawarra region please contact Andrew via social media or on 0408 170 634. If you would like to find out more about opportunities in your area or are keen to be your own boss or look at a business option that may work well with your current industry then contact the team at Transportable Shade Sheds on 1300 667 433 or Saver6.com on 07 5405 3620.

Please call Andrew Wilkinson, a Saver6.com member and a Transportable Shade Shed specialist. He is available to help you get your Transportable Shade Shed on your property.

New York triumph for Maleny

Countdown to Melbourne Cup

Maleny Arts Council’s next show is straight from New York, Frank Ferrante in Groucho, a ‘digitally sharp’ performance of the best of Groucho Marx, according to the New York Times. Frank will perform this tour de force on Sunday, October 2 at 2.00pm in the Maleny Community Centre. The New York Times also described Frank Ferrante as ‘the greatest living interpreter of Groucho Marx’s material’, and when he performed in London’s West End he was nominated for the Lawrence Oliver Award for ‘Comedy performance of the year’. The two act comedy show consists of Groucho’s best one-liners, anecdotes and songs, and the audience becomes part of the performance as Frank comes on stage via the auditorium and ad libs his way through the afternoon in grand Groucho style. “The audience can also meet Frank Ferrante after the show as we invite our patrons onto the deck of the community centre to buy a drink and chat with this outstanding comedian, said Maleny Arts Council President Jennifer Radbourne. Program director for the Arts Council, Peter Lavery said that for those who heard Groucho himself in his fifties and sixties revival, this afternoon will be a nostalgia trip; and for a new generation, it should be one of the highlights of the year. “Frank Ferrante’s Australian tour has been a triumph, leaving audiences remembering it as ‘personal, moving, funny and authentic’ as he re-creates one of the iconic and famous comedians of all time, he said. Frank originated the off-Broadway title role after he was discovered by Groucho’s son Arthur, and for that performance won the 1987 New York’s Theatre World Award. Dine in Maleny and meet new friends Now in its 11th year, the Maleny and District ‘Welcome Dinner’, hosted by the Maleny Blackall Range Lions Club, extend an invite all newcomers over recent years to come along and learn more about the local community and meet new friends. Moving to a new community can often be daunting for people. Leaving familiar places, friends and family isn’t always easy and it can take time to settle and get to know about the area. This should not be so in Maleny as the surrounding District offers so many activities for new residents to enjoy and become involved in including service clubs, sporting clubs, drama groups, craft, art and the list goes on. The community is welcoming and the question

is not ‘what is there to do’, rather, ‘how many activities do I have time to do’? Members of five community groups will talk on the night and all newcomers will be given an information pack so come along and join us. An auction, lucky door prize and raffle will also be part of the evening. The Welcome Dinner will be held on Wednesday, September 21 at the Maleny Showground Pavilion at 6.00pm for 6.45pm, cost is $35.00 per person. Contributed by Pauline Clarke Twenty-one members from Glass House Country View Club enjoyed a morning at The Garden Cafe and garden centre in Maleny on Wednesday, September 7. Over coffee and cake we had a great chat and a chance to catch up with two of our members who have been on extended holidays over the past few months. Ex-President Gwen Simco and her husband have been on a world cruise for four months and gave us information on the many places they had visited and the multitude of food they had eaten! Committee member Chris Essex and her husband have been trying out their new caravan around Australia for the past four months. They loved it so much it looks as though it’s only a matter of time before they disappear again. Glass House Country View Club always welcomes new members; just turn up to one of our meetings or outings. View Clubs throughout Australia have 17,000 members and are a part of the Smith Family. We support Smith Family activities and in the Glass House club we pay particular attention to the ‘Learning for Life’” program. We are only a small club but we already provide financial support to four under privileged children to assist in their education from primary through to tertiary schooling. In addition to this we also provide financial assistance for breakfasts at school and a mentoring program. If any ladies would like to have great fun in our friendly club, please phone Lynda on 5494 7875 or Maree on 5494 6956 for more information.

Pets &

Can we find a home for...

Animals

Time to register your Bella, Molly, Charlie, Max or Buddy Now is the time to register your furry friends. Cat and dog owners will start receiving their annual Sunshine Coast Council animal registration renewal notices in the mail this week. Community and Environment Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said registration of cats and dogs helped council reunite pets with their owners should they become lost. “All cats and dogs must be registered with council each year,” Cr McKay said. “Registering your pet is easy and is an important part of responsible pet ownership. “There are currently 42,366 dogs and 8316 cats registered with council. “Not only does registration information help council to reunite lost pets with their owners, it also helps in planning for dog friendly areas and infrastructure, such as dog off-leash parks. “Significant discounts in registration fees apply for owners of dogs and cats that have been de-sexed and micro-chipped. “Registration is free for pets under six-months-old. “New residents to the Sunshine Coast can transfer their cat or dog registration for free, so if you’ve recently moved to the area, now is the time to contact council and register your pet.” The annual registration period for cats and dogs

commences on October 1 each year and runs through until September 30 the following year. Renewal of pet registration is due by September 30. There are several convenient payment methods available including online payments via MyCouncil or BPay, over the phone, via Australia Post or at a council customer contact centre. Are your details up to date? Have your details or your pet’s details changed, or do you no longer own your pet? • Pet owners can notify council of changes to de-sexing, micro-chipping and pensioner details via MyCouncil. • For pet registration cancellations and address changes, visit council’s website. For more information about animal registration, visit council’s website.

Moagli is a male Bull Terrier x who is only 19 months old. This fellow just adores his toys and balls, because of this, we do require a home for him where he will be the only dog. Moagli needs a home without cats please, and with secure fences that he is unable to climb over or dig under. A stay at home, or work for home owner would be best for him, or perhaps someone who could take him to work with them, such as a truck driver or similar. This boy is personality plus, and just adores his walks. Adoption fee is only $250.00 and he is de-sexed, vaccinated, microchipped and ready for his new home now. With the warmer weather fast approaching, this time of year sees a resurgence of ticks and fleas. Of particular concern for our pets is the paralysis tick which is particularly prevalent from now until Christmas. If an animal is bitten, early symptoms to look out for include vomiting and a change in bark / meow. These symptoms then progress to a paralysis of the back end which if left untreated can develop into complete paralysis and unfortunately can eventually lead to death. Symptoms usually present between two to five days post tick bite and early treatment is always the best option and may require Tick antiserum which can be supported by a holistic care program. Prevention is always recommended to avoid unnecessary illness. Wherever possible try to keep your property maintained and the grass short during this risk period since ticks usually prevail in scubby areas, particularly if there is Lantana present since as this is where the tick’s natural host, the Bandicoot, is most predominant. The paralysis tick is blue / bottle green in colour and the majority of ticks will attach themselves to the area in front of the animal’s front legs. They attach as a small nymph stages and the tick will progressively increase in size as it feeds on the animal’s blood. Preventative measures available at Glass House Holistic Veterinary Service include a variety of products such as collars and spot on topical treatments, as well as the newer oral medications. We also recommend daily searching of your pet's skin and coat as no prevention is fool proof. Again these treatments can be assisted with a holistic care program that can be tailored to your pets’ individual needs.

Midnight is an older cat who is 12 years, and is searching for his new ‘forever’ home where he can retire, and do whatever he likes. This boy is a Semi Longhaired Cat who will require some brushing to keep his coat looking it’s best. Midnight does have an independent nature, and is not really suitable for children or the elderly. Midnight needs a tolerant understanding cat lover, who will give him his own space. Adoption fee is only $75.00 with all vet work done, and he also comes with $100.00 worth of donated goods, (donated by a generous member of the public) to go to his new home with.

Environment United crusade for our environment

More than 100 Sunshine Coast crusaders for our environment came together at Peachester recently to learn new tactics to protect, enhance and improve our region’s sustainability. The many volunteers from council’s Community Nature Conservation Program, Centres for Conservation Learning and Partnerships, Conservation Partnerships Program and Land for Wildlife landholders undertook a day of workshops at the Sunshine Coast Conservation Field Day at London Creek Environmental Reserve on August 20. Environment Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said as well as the field day providing an opportunity for volunteers to learn new skills, it enabled council to share a heartfelt thank you, for the incredible difference they made to their local communities. “Council could never possibly provide the resources, including land and people, time and effort, required to undertake all of the important work across the region, so we cannot thank all of our wonderful volunteers and landholders enough for their amazing contributions,” Cr McKay said. “The field day is held biennially to keep them up to speed with latest practices and new developments. “Practical approaches to conservation was the theme of the day for our latest one and the 13 workshop presenters provided a variety of topics and information enabling the attendees to take away and apply to their own property or in council’s reserve as a volunteer.” Residents interested in helping their local environment can visit council’s website for details on a range of conservation opportunities.

Minty fresh This spring is continuing to unfold beautifully, not just with the fresh colour of spring flowers but the fresh minty scents of some of our local plants. One of our favourite new flowering plants is Mint Bush Prostanthera ovalifolia, they have very aromatic mint perfumed foliage and beautiful pale purple flowers, the blooms are just starting now so we’re looking forward to their ongoing show. Mint Bush is a great addition to any garden and enjoys good drainage and plenty of sun. They grow naturally in our area on rocky outcrops and open forest, reaching a height of between one and three metres. In addition to the Mint Bush we also now have all of our local groundcover Mints available; they are Mentha satureioides Long Leaved Mint, Mentha diemenica Small Leaf Mint and Mentha grandiflora Large Flowered Mint. These are all great groundcovers with none of the invasive potential of the exotic mints. All of these mints have very aromatic foliage and I’ve heard several nostalgic tales of memories as kids rolling in the perfumed foliage along river flats. Various sources give them all as bushfood with varying minty flavours, but like many highly aromatic leaves you can have too much of a good thing and moderation is the key. Long Leaved Mint in particular is sought after for its fresh minty flavour by chefs. Find space for one of our local native mints fresh and enjoy their aromas in your garden.

Lichens Part 2: Nature’s Environmental Indicators

The biology of lichens makes them ideal environmental indicators: lacking roots or a vascular system, they depend on atmospheric sources of water and nutrients. Air pollutants are absorbed over the surface of the lichens, so observation of growth and community composition as well as tissue analysis of lichens can be tools for monitoring air pollution, particularly in industrial areas and areas of heavy traffic. Air pollution has a profound effect on lichens. In the mid-to-late 20th Century (and still in some countries today), sulphur dioxide produced by coal burning industries and power stations often dissolved in water vapour to fall as acid rain. Many industrial areas and cities became almost devoid of lichens. Today, as sulphur dioxide and other airborne pollutant levels fall, lichens are recolonising city areas. Lichens can be grouped according to morphology: each of the growth form ‘groups’ displays different degrees of sensitivity to airborne pollutants. ‘Fruticose’ lichens form shrubby or strand-like growths. They are the most sensitive to airborne pollutants and are the first type of lichens to disappear when pollutant levels rise. Leaf-like, lobed lichens are ‘foliose’ and are slightly less sensitive to pollutants. Crustose lichens form crusts, tightly attached to the substrate. This group is the least sensitive to air pollution and such lichens are often found thriving in heavily polluted cities. So, long story short – where there’s a variety of healthy lichens, the air is good!

You Said It Glasshouse Country Expo cancellation

Since our last notice, the Celebrate Beerwah Inc. organising committee has confronted some hindering health issues. These have been serious enough for us to re-consider the task we have set ourselves in organising the Glasshouse Country EXPO in October. Regretfully, we have decided to cancel the EXPO this year. This decision was not made lightly, as the support for the event across the business and community sectors has been very strong indeed. We remain enthusiastic for the Glasshouse Country community groups, businesses and tourism operators to come together in a productive, informative and fun way in the future. As a committee, we are committed to pursuing the advancement of Glasshouse Country as a region and will continue to work with businesses and community to host a Glasshouse Country event in 2017. We seek your understanding and we apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused. Please keep an eye on our Facebook page and www.celebratebeerwah.com.au for updates and planned projects. Excitement for the safety of local drivers at Bowen Road

Thursday night, September 1, saw a second fantastic gift in recent weeks presented to the Glass House residents who need to negotiate the Steve Irwin Way intersections as a part of their driving challenge. This intersection at Bowen Road has seen numerous fatalities, ‘T’ bone collisions and goodness knows how many other prangs and cars finishing up in the drain on the western side of Steve Irwin Way. I suppose there will be some drivers who can't afford to lose a couple of minutes in their rush to get to their destination, but when you have to wait five to eight minutes to enter Steve Irwin Way on a regular basis the new traffic control lights is just wonderful. The Reed Street controls have already proved an economic benefit for the businesses of Glass House Mountains township. The Bowen Road project will now save lives. Thankyou Andrew Powell the state member for Glass House and DTMR for the great work in making this intersection safer for all local users. The minor delays suffered over recent months to complete these projects was bearable when the community gets a fantastic outcome. All we can say now is Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Margaret and Bob McLean Glass House Mountains

Environment?

I was intrigued by Andrew Powell’s comments under ‘Environment’ in the August 31 edition of the Glasshouse Country & Maleny News. I researched back to the changes introduced by the Newman government when Mr Powell was the environment minister. The agricultural sector was doing quite well prior to the Newman Government weakening the clearing laws and there is no evidence of a dramatic growth in economic output after the weakening of the laws. Historically there is no obvious link between vegetation management restrictions and agricultural output in QLD. 24

Send your letter to email: editorial@gcnews.com.au fax: 5438 7446 post: PO Box, 99, Beerwah, 4519

In view of this evidence his statement 'that had the laws been passed we would have seen Glass House’s agriculture sector and future economic growth come to a screaming halt' is not sustainable and is just not true. Andrew Powell should also know that despite some initial issues with government maps, these issues have been resolved, and would not have prevented farmers from removing lantana or managing their crops. It is interesting to also note that Andrew listens to his electorate but perhaps he should broaden his consultation process to include those of his electorate who reduced his 19% plus majority, down to a tiny majority, changing his safe LNP seat to a marginal one. Maybe he should consider that this could be related to the LNP policies on land clearing at the time he was the environment minister. It should also be noted that the clearing of some 300,000 ha of native vegetation per year in QLD has resulted in a terrible loss of native wildlife and released millions of tonnes of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere every year. In 2013/2014 over 100,000 ha of forest and bushland was bulldozed in the catchment of the Great Barrier Reef alone which has increased soil erosion, hence muddying the creeks and rivers that flow into the Great Barrier Reef causing damage to this World Heritage site. Daffodil Day

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the shops, business and schools that sold the display boxed merchandise. These businesses are from the areas of Glass House, Landsborough and Beerwah. A very big thank you to all the willing volunteers that helped sell the fresh daffodils and merchandise on the stalls over Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Dedication of some of these women was sitting at stalls experiencing unfavourable weather conditions. To these people I say a huge thank you for your commitment. If anyone has three hours to spare and would like to put their name down for next year’s roster, please let me know on 5494 6853. A total amount of $10,214.30 was raised for Daffodil Day Cancer Council from this area. I sincerely appreciate everyones' help and support for this great cause. Thank You. Shopping made more challenging The disabled toilets at the Sunland Shopping Centre at Caloundra are not big enough for shoppers to bring in their shopping trolleys when they need to use the facilities. When this issue was raised with Centre Management they advised that trolleys can be taken to them and they will look after them. Unfortunately, this in itself causes another issue in that access to their office is outside the centre and the pathway is narrow, and then to talk to someone you have to communicate via a speaker at the door. Management have said that they are going to do a renovation and the problem will be fixed then. Julie Savage Regional Co-ordinator Labor Enabled

Letterbox stolen

We were saddened to discover that someone has stolen our letter box which was made as a present, and has lived happily outside our home in Peachester for the past 10 years. It was securely screwed to its base and had to be jimmied to release it. If you have been given a letter box shaped like a small wooden house and/ or have seen it, please contact this newspaper. We fear for society when even letter boxes aren't safe from theft. J&R Gutteridge Peachester

School News Local event raises money for Mooloolah State School

Mooloolah State School students, staff and parents would like to thank the town and community of Mooloolah for coming together for a grand scale event; the Mooloolah Rodeo, which was a successful and exciting community event. The rodeo created an evening of bull riding, entertainment, fun, music and food for the young and old. Large and small businesses across the region donated, helped and supported the community event which in turn allowed the school to make some much needed funds for the Mooloolah P&C association for student resources within the school. This event was inspired by our school fundraising co-ordinators, Shona Hume, Sally Gassner and other major sponsors such as Rick Gazzard the owner of the Beerwah and Palmwoods Hotels, White’s IGA Mooloolah, Mooloolah Pharmacy, Mooloolah Dental, Sunshine Coast Council, and Mooloolah Meats, as well as other sponsors, supporters and helpers. On the night, the school staff and P&C went above and beyond to make this night enjoyable and successful for all. They worked tirelessly with many volunteers to set up the Recreation Grounds in Mooloolah to showcase Bull riding at its finest from Honky Tonk Rodeo Promotions. So once again a huge thank you to the Mooloolah community for supporting Mooloolah State School.

Finding Dory in Beerwah

Contributed by Debbie Ives The two Prep classes at Beerwah SS were thrilled to receive news they had placed first choice in the people’s award at the recent Beerwah Charity Sports Day Scarecrow Competition. Finding Dory was a popular and easy choice for the students, and with extra parent help from Casia Moses, the finished result was fantastic! If you were driving down Peachester Road past the primary school, you would not have missed their amazing efforts. Larger than life Dory and Hank with a fisherman keeping a watchful eye over them both. The Preps will continue their creative talents in class as the school prepares for its bi-annual Arts Week in September. Proud Preppies with their winning ribbon

Spring is here! Contributed by Sally Joyce

Now in its 5th year, the Peachester State School’s Stephanie Alexander Kitchen and Garden is a ‘feast’ of action. Each week, students in Years 3 - 6 participate in either a kitchen or a garden lesson. In the garden the Ruby and Darby inspecting the fruits of the students are this school garden week planting lettuce, pumpkin, cucumber and corn and harvesting lettuce and silver beet. Next week in the kitchen Mrs Thorne will be coordinating creative and healthy recipes around these ingredients. We have a number of chickens. All of the school’s food scraps are given to either the garden compost or the chickens that provide eggs for the kitchen. The best part of the kitchen lessons is sitting down to eat at the end. The children set the table and take turns to serve a shared platter for each other. They have a tablecloth, vase of flowers and share conversations with our parent and QCWA helpers. Special thanks for the many hours Mrs Rennae Twidale and Principal Mrs Hodder contribute and their green thumb assistance in co-ordinating the school garden.

Glenview School Book Week dress-up day

Contributed by librarian, Mrs McDonald With the theme of ‘Australia Story Country’, we had a wonderful show in the Hall to celebrate books and reading for Children’s Book Week. All the students who performed for us were wonderful. Thank you to Group G for their computer-generated signs, Group H for their hilarious poem about the great Aussie sausage, Rylee for her brilliant very own poem, Groups C and D for their wonderful rendition of a classic poem (with awesome actions of course!), Chloe and Alex from Group G for reading Possum Magic so beautifully and Mrs Harry’s special Book Week choir for their sweet singing of my favourite Australian song – Peter Allen’s, ‘I still call Australia Home’. The winners of the Book Week Colouring competition were Joe, Maisy, Charlotte H, Allira, Hayley K, Madi and Drew and the writing competition winners were Ella M, Eli C, and Miller.

Since January of this year, the Ananda Marga River School at Maleny has been running a unique ‘Forest Kindergarten’ inspired program at their Early Childhood Centre. This type of education has been operating in Europe since the 1950’s and has proven to be a wonderful foundation for Prep. With the benefits of outdoor learning well documented, children who engage in this almost exclusive outdoor play based program are encouraged to develop physical skills, resilience and immerse themselves in the wonder and inherent learning’s of the natural world. The school has been hosting its own ‘Creek Kindergarten’ program guided by Kindergarten Teacher, Katchia Avenell, who is a trained Nature Pedagogist. The program runs three days a week from Tuesday to Thursday during school hours. “The Creek Kindergarten adds another element of holistic child focussed learning. Seeing the kids immersed in nature and deeply engaged in play and learning is the way forward in early childhood education,” said Centre Director Nicole Duncombe. The children are encouraged to explore climbing trees, take risks, work with small tools, catch creatures in the creek, build cubbies in the vines, create transient art pieces and much more and spend up to five hours immersed in outdoor play. With no interruptions, the children fully immerse themselves in ‘deep play’ which allows a greater sense of engagement, learning and understanding. It is the ultimate classroom without walls! To find out more contact the Ananda Marga River School Early Childhood Centre on 5499 9359. The school is located at 251 Bridge Creek Road, Maleny.

Living - Arts Creative excellence at USC Gallery A stunning collection of visual art by regional secondary school students was recently exhibited at the University of the Sunshine Coast Gallery. The ‘Creative Generation Excellence Awards in Visual Art – Regional Exhibition 2016’ Chelsea Blacker with recognises and promotes excellence in senior ‘Tiger Legend’ visual arts education and student achievement in visual art throughout Queensland’s state and non-state high schools. Gallery Manager Lou Jaeger said the exhibition included 60 works produced by students from 30 different secondary schools in the North Coast education region (from Pine Rivers to Cooroy) as part of their senior visual art curriculum during 2016. Two local students from Beerwah High have had their work featured in the exhibition. They are Beerwah High students Acacia Bracken with acrylic on canvas titled ‘Out West’ and Chelsea Blacker with an acrylic, ink, and pencil on canvas titled ‘Tiger Legend’. Ms Jaeger said that for most of the students involved, this would be the first time their artwork is presented in a professional gallery environment. “To be selected for this exhibition held here at the University Gallery might help them to decide on a creative career path after Year 12,” she said. “It is always exciting to be part of a young artist’s career and the variety and standard of creativity is always excellent.” “The exhibition helps raise community awareness about the degree of sophistication in concepts, diversity of technical competence, and the high standard of arts education in Queensland secondary schools.” Acacia Bracken with ‘Out West’

Art spectacular at Montville

Blackall Range Visual Artists have our major exhibition of the year called Spring Art Spectacular held at St Mary's Hall on the Village Green in Montville which will be running from Saturday, September 24 to Monday, October 3, and will be open from 10.00am to 4.00pm daily. The exhibition will feature work from a number of talented local artists and will include pastels, water colours, oils and acrylic works. One wall of the exhibition will feature paintings of 'People and Pet Portraits' and ‘Places on the Range'. All donations and commissions from our sales are donated towards the upkeep of St Mary's Hall.

Unchartered: the Space Between Local artists Annie McIntosh and Amica Whincop will be showing their work at The Garden Haus Gallery, The Garden, 34 Mountainview Road, Maleny from Thursday, September 15 to Monday, October 3. A ‘Meet the Artist’ with live art demonstrations using acrylic, enamel paint and shellac will be happening on Sunday, September 18 from 1.30pm to 4.00pm. Live music will be an added attraction for this free event. The love of organic elements fuels the inspiration for artists Amica Whincop and Annie McIntosh. Their palettes are selected with a judicious sense of complement and contrast. Individual forms are isolated, separated and given space to declare themselves, thus cohesively developing a structure of separation, presenting a new ‘whole’ which amplifies the original underpainting.

Petraiture helping pets

Mooloolah artist, Janet Carew, devotes much of her life to restoring habitat and environment for our native wildlife. Being so passionate about animals and their welfare, both native and domestic, she has joined with two northern Sunshine Coast artists, Natalie Barlow and Fiona Groom in an animal inspired exhibition titled ‘Captivating Creatures’. It opens at The Butter Factory Arts Centre, Cooroy on Saturday, September 17 and runs through until October 26. The exhibition and associated activities will raise funds for The Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge (SCARS) at Sippy Downs and World Animal Day. Janet will feature some paintings from her ‘Petratiture’ collection. She invented the name ‘Petraiture’ to describe her portraits of pets that she loves to paint when she’s not restoring bushland. Janet likes to bring out the personality of animals with the use of expression and colour, often with a whimsical note. Some of her paintings will be in the exhibition while others will be for sale at an Art Market at the Gallery on October 1 to celebrate World Animal Day. Funds will also be raised from a raffle of a donated painting by Fiona Groom, donations from visitors to the gallery at the opening and also on the World Animal Day Art Market on October 1. Entry to the World Animal Day Art Market is free at The Butter Factory Arts Centre from 10.00am until 2.30pm. For all the details check out the Buttery Factory Arts Centre website www.butterfactoryartscentre.com.au and the Captivating Creatures Facebook page www.facebook.com/ CaptivatingCreaturesArt

Elected

Representatives Andrew Wallace

Federal Member for Fisher Opening of the 45th Parliament

Last week I had the privilege of officially representing the people of Fisher in Canberra at the opening of Australia’s 45th Parliament. Delivering my first speech to the Parliament, I committed myself and my hard working small team to working tirelessly for the people of Fisher, young and old, black and white, the employed, the small business person, the pensioner, the self-funded retiree, the unemployed and the under-employed. I hope and pray that I may fulfil my role as one of the Sunshine Coast’s representatives in Canberra with integrity, honour and respect. Aside from the ceremony of the occasion, the Coalition moved quickly to get on with the job of governing for all Australians with the introduction of several important pieces of legislation to the Parliament. One of these was the re-introduction of the Building and Construction Industry (Improving Productivity) Bill. This Bill would reestablish the Australian Building and Construction Commission (ABCC) that was abolished under the Gillard Government. Despite some of the misleading comments you may have heard about this Bill, its sole intention is to restore the rule of law to Australia’s building and construction industry and prevent unlawful and unethical behaviour by some within the industry that is shutting out honest contractors, delaying projects and driving up the cost of building important infrastructure like new schools and hospitals. Last Friday I welcomed Steven Ciobo MP, Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment to the Sunshine Coast to meet with local business people. During his visit, I introduced Minister Ciobo to Jason Simpson who runs a great Mooloolaba business, Aussie Red Crab. Exporting sustainable Fraser Island spanner crab meat from the Sunshine Coast to China, Japan, Hong Kong and New Zealand, Aussie Red Crab is one of many home grown businesses that could benefit from the Turnbull Government’s pursuit of further free trade agreements with our trading partners. In the coming weeks and months, you will see me out and about in your local area as I ramp up my community listening posts. In the meantime, if you have something coming up in your community that you would like me to attend or there is an issue I may be able to assist with, please don’t hesitate to contact my office. Once again, thank you for your support.

Andrew Powell

Jenny McKay

State Member for Glass House

Division 5 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council

Glass House residents have never felt so safe

The Glass House Mountains community deserves to be very proud of their efforts in fighting for traffic lights at what were two very dangerous intersections. Andrew Powell, Lorraine Mann, We recently saw Cheryl Albanese and Bob McLean the lights go on at the Reed Street intersection, and last week I went to celebrate with Bowen Road residents following the lights being activated there. This really is a great win for the people of Glass House and I’m so pleased I’ve been able to play my part as their local MP in delivering this vital infrastructure.

Local Heroes Grants Round four success stories

The best part of my Local Heroes Grant program is that I have the opportunity to catch up with individuals and community group members who are needing just a little assistance for their pursuits or much-needed equipment. The winners in round four included the Glasshouse Men's Shed to purchase additional tools, Palmwoods Bowls Club to install child seat restraints in their bus, the Caboolture Classic & Vintage Speedway Association to assist with costs of holding a Quad Bike Education Day and the Caboolture Historical Village to purchase a weed sprayer. Reuben Tidy received a grant to assist with the costs involved in competing in the National Taekwondo Championships (held in Bendigo, Victoria) and I’m delighted to announce that Reuben picked up bronze in his division last weekend. Well done Reuben and it was a pleasure to be able to assist you in your efforts.

Having a local youth skate bowl in Mooloolah remains top of mind for many locals and I remain steadfast in my commitment to help this happen. Council continues to liaise with Queensland Rail regarding a suitable location. While the toing and froing is challenging as we put forward possible locations which they do not support, I have not given up. I have requested they inform the community of land they would deem suitable for this type of youth facility. Meanwhile, some parts of the local community are keen to investigate the opportunity for an off leash dog park. I will follow this up with the relevant project officers and keep you informed of any developments.

Environment photography award winners announced

Congratulations to all 27 finalists in the 2016 Sunshine Coast Environment Photography Awards selected from a massive 665 entries and of course a special call-out to the three winners – Helen Debnam for the nature based award, Nathan McNeil for the human interaction with environment award and Jack Ford for the Junior award. While all stunning photographs, I think locals will particularly enjoy Nathan McNeil’s image of a rock climbing adventurer jumping from the top of a mountain peak in the beautiful Glasshouse Mountains (see photo on page 14). You can view all the finalists images on council’s website and vote for your favourite and a chance to win a gift voucher by September 15.

Key learnings from Victoria

Last week I spent a few days in Victoria as part of a study tour to learn about community, sporting and development activities in Melbourne and surrounding areas as relevant to the Sunshine Coast region, particularly the hinterland. As well as visiting and learning about various libraries and heritage sites, sporting venues, major streetscape redevelopments and significant project master plans, I met with representatives from the City of Melbourne regarding the Queen Victoria Markets Precinct Renewal Project. I’m pleased to advise key representatives from this project will be coming on board with the next stages of the Palmwoods Place Making process. I’m looking forward to putting all of my key learnings and ideas into action locally soon.

Having a good day? Feeling blessed or cursed? Some days we can feel that everything is against us. We just want to go back to bed and start again. On those sorts of days, we can quickly think of ourselves as living under a curse, asking ourselves, why do bad things always happen to me? When we consider the many issues we face the loss of someone close, an illness, accident, unemployment, failure or hurt from another these can add up and we can begin to feel like we are no good or are being punished. When we focus on the pain and suffering we can easily be enveloped in misery and hopelessness. However, when we shift our focus to what is good amidst the pain and suffering, we find a glimmer of hope, comfort and joy. As Christians we believe that Jesus came to bless us not curse us. The hope, comfort and joy

Contact 5439 9341 or 5496 9671

found in Jesus Christ is revealed in many different and often unexpected ways. The stranger who offers a smile walking by; the nurse sitting with the ill just a little longer than required; the friend who messages or rings to ask, ‘how are you going?’; the friend sending a sympathy card in loss; the word ‘sorry’ being offered after causing hurt; the stranger going out of their way to help. The glimmer of hope, comfort and joy in Jesus is revealed in these actions. They brighten our day. Not only do we see Jesus working in the lives of others, but Jesus offers to work in our personal lives. Jesus said, ‘Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest’ Matthew 11:28. We don’t need to face the burdens of life on our own. We can turn to Jesus and simply ask, “Jesus help me.” To receive the blessings of Jesus is a choice we can make every day. To offer the blessing of Jesus to others is a choice we can make every day. God invites each of us to choose blessings over curses! Deuteronomy 30:19

Out & About Heart of a community celebrated At last Saturday’s ‘Back to Glass House’ day, the event proved what a central part of the community the Glass House Mountains School of Arts Hall (now Glass House Mountains Community Hall) played in the Glass House Mountains and surrounding areas for the past 100 years. The event showcased many historical displays from the groups that had used the venue over the years, along with other local history. It also brought together 100s of locals and former locals to share their memories and reminisce about days gone by. Things To Do Sounds of Brass in Maleny

Orchids, orchids, orchids!

On Sunday, September 25, two of the finest community bands on the Sunshine Coast will come together to give audiences a feast of wonderful brass music in a great Hinterland venue. The popular Sunshine Brass Band along with the Nambour Salvation Army band will perform a community concert at the Maleny Community Centre. The ‘Sounds of Brass’ concert will commence at 1.30pm and includes afternoon tea. Tickets are $15.00 adult and $13.00 concession, available at the door. For more information, please contact Sunshine Brass band via sunshinebrassband@gmail. com. Maleny Community Centre, 23 Maple Street Maleny.

Spring is in the air and orchids are blooming all around us. In particular our native orchids – the King orchid (Dendrobium speciosum) and the Rock orchid (Dendrobium kingianum). Also in flower at this time of year is the softcane dendrobium – a native of India and Asia – large showy stems of flowers in colours from the softest pastels - pink, apricot and yellows to strong purples with a white throat. To celebrate the wonders of the orchid world, the Spring Orchid Spectacular is on again at the Beerwah Hall on September 23 and 24. This annual event is organised by the Glasshouse Orchid Society with support from other orchid societies on the Sunshine Coast. The eye catching displays of orchids and foliage are truly spectacular. The Beerwah hall overflows with the colour and fragrance of a huge variety of orchids. Take a stroll around the hall and find the awarded plants with their prize ribbons. Which one will win the grand champion? Or the champion specimen? There are over 50 categories of orchids so there are lots to see. A popular feature of the show is the orchid plant sales. Our experienced growers sell divisions of their orchids so come along and see what bargains you can find. If you are a beginner orchid grower and want some advice on what orchid is suitable for you and your garden, or if you are more experienced and have questions about orchid culture or problems, ask our growers – there’ll be lots of people to help you. And take some time out to sit on the deck overlooking the water lily lagoon and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea with some home-made goodies. For more information, check out the website. www.glasshouseorchids.com.au

Sounds of Jazz come to town

On Saturday, September 24 from 7.00pm Saturday the Caxton Street Jazz Band (CSJB) will be bringing their unique sound to the RSL Maleny Hall. CSJB will be making their 8th annual appearance in Maleny, they are a six-piece band that not only appeals to jazz aficionados, but also to the general public at large. The inspiration for the band is the classic hot jazz of the early 20th century. Tickets are $20.00 for members and $25.00 for non-members which you can just pay at the door on the night. The bar will be operating for drinks, but it is byo nibbles. For bookings email info@rslmaleny.org. au or phone 0428 712 504. The Maleny RSL Hall is located at 1 Bunya Street, Maleny.

Open Garden Springtime Open Gardens Springtime in Montville is an opportunity to visit two of the best mature country gardens in Queensland, near the beautiful Hinterland town of Montville. On Saturday, October 1 and Sunday, October 2, enjoy a scenic drive and visit theses two gorgeous garden properties - ‘The Shambles’ (85 Western Avenue, Montville) and ‘Wongawilli’ (19 Manley Drive, off Western Avenue, Montville). Both properties are open to the public from 9.30am - 4.00pm both days. Admission will be $6.00 per person per property with all funds going to a nominated a charity from each garden. ‘The Shambles’ is a collector’s garden established over 25 years set around a century old farmhouse. Highlights will include many spring flowering shrubs, perennials, bulbs and orchids, and spectacular flowering trees. The garden also features an extensive network of paths with no dead ends. Street parking is available and most of this garden is accessible for those requiring disabled access. Refreshments are available at The Plough Inn, and ‘The Shambles’ continues to offer their support to charity efforts since first opening their garden to the public in 2001. For more details, visit www.montvillegarden.com. ‘Wongawilli’ is located at 19 Manley Drive, (off Western Avenue) Montville, and is another collectors garden which commenced 16 years ago. Rowena, the garden's owner, describes having “phases of collecting plants" such as Magnolias, Wisterias, Brugmansias, Begonias and many more. A wide range of sub-tropical and temperate plants can be grown on the Range and are wonderfully thriving in this garden. A difficult slope has been tamed with wide terraces and there are areas of woodland and revegetated gullies, a testament to the skill and horticultural knowledge of the owner. The original garden is close to maturity and visitors will enjoy a good range of beautifully unusual plants as well as pleasantly meandering sections of both tropical and temperate flora. Proceeds from visits to ‘The Shambles’ will assist the Cittamani Hospice service on the Sunshine Coast, and proceeds from ‘Wongawilli’ will support Fiji’s recent cyclone reconstruction efforts. Entry for those under 18 is free. www.queensland.com/en-AU/event/open-gardensspringtime-in-montville

With the price of green beans lately, you might be tempted to grow your own. And to be honest … they’re really easy to grow. Here I’ll concentrate on bush beans. In our climate we can grow them all year round, but need some soil preparation to get the most from them. Sweeten your soil a little with garden lime or dolomite (a big hand full per square metre). Don’t add a high nitrogen fertiliser, as beans make their own, but do add some sulphate of potash and organic matter. Beans are best grown from seed directly sown in your garden bed. I find I get best eating results from ‘Brown Beauty’ – but you can try any of the varieties on sale. Just dig over the soil, make a trench 10cm deep (hilling the soil on one side of the trench), place one seed every 10cm, then cover with 3cm of soil. Some people like to soak their seeds overnight before planting. Water just the once after planting and not again until after they have emerged – which will take up to a week. Try not to be tempted to buy seedlings in punnets as beans don’t like having their roots disturbed when you pull them apart. But if you’re inclined, you can grow them in individual seedling cells to transplant into your garden. This works best in winter as beans need a soil temperature of over 18 degrees to germinate. These I use to fill in any gaps as some seeds don’t germinate in the garden. Once your seedlings are up and have grown about 10cm high, carefully push the rest of the soil you dug from the trench around the stems to cover them to a depth of about 5-7cm. This supports the growing bushes and helps stop them being attacked by bean fly. Bean fly is a pest where the larval stage burrows down the stems of bean plants, weakening them and making them fall over. If you’ve grown your own seedlings, plant them so that the stem is buried 5-7cm deep. At this point water the seedlings with a seaweed solution to help boost the nitrogen fixing bacteria growing in their young roots. Don’t be tempted to irrigate your beans too frequently as they grow. They are susceptible to a range of fungal, rust and root rot diseases. Once or twice a week is fine. The most common pests for beans are white fly (a sap sucker which can be treated with a pyrethrum spray), spider mites (use an eco-oil to treat them) and bean flower thrip, which is only noticeable when the beans start to grow but are crooked and deformed. These minuscule insects sting the tiny bean as it forms in the flower and so are hard to see. You can use an eco-oil to treat them, but you have to spray the flowers well. You’ll have continual cropping for about four to six weeks, so it’s important to plant a new row of seeds every two weeks to make sure your supply is kept up. The trick is to pick your beans often and don’t let them get old on the plant – otherwise the plant will stop producing flowers. When the bush has had it, don’t pull them out, just cut it off at ground level and let the nitrogen rich roots boost your garden nutrient levels naturally.

Water Lilies

Nymphaea species Here in Australia no garden is complete without some sort of water feature. Be it a dam on larger properties to ponds, tubs and even old baths. And no water feature is complete without the majestic water lily. Their graceful circular leaves floating on the pond provide tranquillity as well as great protection to the fish below. Their showy flower heads are stunning and readily visited by native bees. Modern cultivars come in all sorts of colours, fragrances and sizes from the popular blues and purples to reds, whites, yellow, pink and even variegated. There truly is a water lily for any pond size, so why not drop in a water feature this year and do your local wildlife a favour? New homes are being snapped up off the plan by people keen to seize on the State Government’s $20,000 Queensland First Home Owner’s Grant. Treasurer Curtis Pitt says low interest rates, reasonable house prices and our $20,000 First Home Owners Grant are proving irresistible to people looking to get into the market. “Since the boosted grant took effect on July 1 we’ve received 577 applications worth $11.5 million and of those a total of 213 grants worth $4.3 million have been approved so far, with more to be approved as house purchases by applicants proceed,” Curtis Pitt said. “I’d encourage anyone looking to get into the market to move quickly because in the last two months alone a quarter of the $40 million allocated to this scheme has already been applied for and the $20,000 is only on the table until June next year. “It’s clear that having $20,000 upfront towards a new home is convincing many Queenslanders to buy sooner, so this flood of applications is really gratifying. “I know many Queenslanders were concerned they may never save enough money for a deposit towards a new home. “This is a significant win for first home buyers and it’s a win for the building industry statewide, stimulating demand for new product and supporting thousands of building construction jobs.”

Stockland’s Pallara community is located just 19km from the Brisbane CBD. Stockland general manager Kingsley Andrew said it’s the last remaining greenfield development in greater Brisbane. “It’s in an established corridor surrounded by Sunnybank and Forest Lake which is traditionally the highest selling postcode in Brisbane,” Mr Andrew said. “What’s really resonating is the price point, you can’t buy new housing in greater Brisbane for that sort of money. “A $20,000 boost from the State Government goes a significant way towards helping pay for a brand new home here, with house and land packages starting from $450,000.” The 12 month boosted grant applies to the purchases of a newly constructed house or apartment under $750,000. Young golfers smash course records

Contributed by Richard Owen Course records fell to young guns during zone junior futures tour at Maleny Golf Club. Maleny turned on perfect Spring weather for the club to host Sunday’s Glasshouse Mountains Zone Junior Golf Association Futures Tournament involving a field of almost 50 players competing in 18-hole, 9-hole, 6-hole and 3-hole formats. It was particularly exciting to see both the men’s and ladies Par 70 course records fall to two impressive young players of the future. Congratulations from all at Maleny Golf Club to 18-year-old Caloundra member Sean Daines who shot 72 off the Blue Championship markers and 17-year-old Woodford member Jessica Cook who shot 82 (both pictured). Sean clipped two shots off the men’s record previously held by Garth Bailo while Jessica carved an impressive 9 shots off the ladies record previously held by Karen Heading. Their scorecards will be displayed prominently in the club house until their records fall. Thanks to all those organisers, volunteers and mums and dads who made it possible. And a special thanks to all the young players. We look forward to seeing you all back at Maleny Golf Club soon.

Game two was a much closer contest, with Sarah winning 20 to 19. Kath had a break of six while Sarah had one of four. Just for Laughs The haircut

A teenage boy had just passed his driving test and inquired of his father as to when they could discuss his use of the car. His father said he'd make a deal with his son. "You bring your grades up from a C to a B average, study your Bible a little and get your hair cut. Then we'll talk about the car. "The boy thought about that for a moment, decided he'd settle for the offer and they agreed on it. After about six weeks his father said, "son, you've brought your grades up and

I've observed that you have been studying your Bible, but I'm disappointed you haven't had your hair cut." The boy said, "you know dad, I've been thinking about that, and I've noticed in my studies of the Bible that Samson had long hair, John the Baptist had long hair, Moses had long hair, and there's even strong evidence that Jesus had long hair." The dad replies "did you also notice that they all walked everywhere they went?" Submitted by Hugh Jones, Beerwah

Week beginning 14/09/2016 CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 With the Pisces full Moon, and the planets interacting in Sagittarius, your sign and your reputation will shine and attract others. With Mercury and Pluto getting together and building up to September 23 all this will bring greater clarity and understanding. You may probably find lost information which makes easier decisions and go ahead plans. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 A Pisces full Moon on the weekend brings some kind of philosophical or educational enquiry. Jupiter is very strong in your planets and may have a lot to do with benefits from government contracts. There will be the feeling and the urge to be set free and fly away to experience greater intensity in your life by exploration and new travel plans. PISCES February 20 – March 20 There is a big beautiful full Moon in your sign this weekend, accentuating your place in the front row! That means it brings you and your interests, to the fore in a way that helps you to affect a healing balance in all relationships. You may even find a final cathartic time of stress release. Give voice to your feelings to those in your circle. ARIES March 21 – April 20 There is conflict in the stars with your sign, until the weekend. If you wish to be an effective leader, then follow the rules not to be bossy or belligerent. It does not make sense continuing to fight for being top dog! By the weekend, the full Moon will balance out your daily duties and give you nurturing activities, such as rest and meditation.

TAURUS April 21 – May 22 There are unforeseen circumstances, probably due to Mercury in the thick of being retrograde. For best results look for modern new and original solutions to old problems. The full Moon for the weekend will be in Pisces. This steps up your social life and if possible receive or give massage or attend to your personal skin therapies. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 This week may see you dealing with an overseas matter and perhaps an early activity with a friend. For instance, you both may be toying with an idea of going on a cruise through Europe! At least you will be revitalised by having made various plans. Those arrangements will be looked at again after September 23 when Mercury goes direct. CANCER June 22 – July 22 This weekend sees the second eclipse for this month influencing your sign, so the Full Moon will be in the sign of Pisces. This can open up a shared emotional channel with someone overseas who may be sending you psychic signals. Spiritual enlightenment is possible and in the mundane level there is a need for adventure and learning. LEO July 23 – August 22 There is a full Moon eclipse coming up for you this weekend in your sector of sharing assets with somebody. Perhaps you may have a tax matter or insurance contract that is dragging on. At this time, it requires patient pursuit, not blind impulse. Things will get better with your financial situation after September 23 with Mercury overcoming obstacles.

Your Stars with Edgar J. Winter - www.astroclairvoyant.com VIRGO August 23 – September 22 There seems to be a punching bag reaction or provocations from others under rebellious planets in transit. Stay focused on practical considerations. The weekend comes with a Pisces Lunar Eclipse, opposite your sign, and so you will share a dose of psychic awareness with your partner. What was missing will be revealed now. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 There may be strong emotional feelings from, or for a child, which motivates the actions you may take. It always pays to remember that you catch more hugs if you open your arms wide! Big hearted Jupiter comes into your cardinal sign, however you will not feel the benefits of healing and therapy until Mercury goes direct from September 23. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 A full Moon on the weekend in your compatible sign of Pisces triggers healing in many relationships. As people review the past 19 years of their lifetime, a burst of inspiration frees yourself from perceived restrictions. The planet Pluto, with Mercury is good for analysis of old paper work, information and previous bad decisions. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 Strong planets in your sign work together now with Jupiter moving into the cardinal sign of Libra. Generally speaking you should have a harmonious energy of relationships. A build up in your social connections highlights your network zone, upgrading contacts with friends and acquaintances. The weekend’s full Moon is emotionally intense.
