OCTOBER 14 2015
Hi Everyone
T
he front page says it all for this week – Beerwah ready to party! Following last year’s Beerwah Street Party lots of community groups put their hands up to be involved in this year’s event to be held on Friday night from 4.00pm to 9.00pm in Simpson Street. The cover image features just two of the entertainment elements of the night. There’s local vintage-style frock designer Kristen Dickybird who will be a part of the Beerwah Tower Green Markets which showcase handmade work for sale by local creators and artisans. Kristen's handmade dresses are also featured in a 1950s-style charity calendar for White Ribbon – Australia’s campaign to stop violence against women. The calendar, an initiative of two local ladies, will be launched at the street party and it reveals the modelling talent of the Beerwah CWA branch members, and other members of the community. Accompanying Kristen on the cover is Beerwah CWA member Debbie, along with Poppy, Shae-Lee and Maddison from Beerwah State School who will perform at the party. Don’t miss out on this great family friendly event. Go to page 24 for the program of the night’s entertainment. Regards,

There was excitement in the air at Buck's Bakery at Landsborough last week when they were advised that their apprentice Kellie Williams had taken out a prestigious National Bakery Industry, President’s Award. The competition was open to all Apprentices across Queensland – testing their ability to create new bakery products using 20 possible ingredients. The panel of three judges considered the number of ingredients used, recipe development, presentation, and whether or not the product was bakery useable. Kellie's entry used all of the 20 ingredients and included Pepper Bread, New York Rye and Wholemeal Buns. Buck's Bakery’s Master Baker Mark Ferguson, who has been baking for 36 years, said that we can expect to see some of these award winning products in store over the coming months. Mark also suggested that the wholemeal bun would provide a great alternative to the traditional Hot Cross Bun next Easter. Mark is clearly proud of their team’s achievements with Kellie having previously been recognised as Runner Up - Apprentice of the Year, and in 2013 Sharon Lacco of Glass House Mountains, now a qualified baker, was awarded with Apprentice of the Year.

Bucks Bakery’s award winning staff Sharon Lacco and Kellie Williams While Mark isn’t keen to take any credit for Kellie and Sharon’s successes they both definitely appreciate having the opportunity to learn from someone as experienced in the industry as Mark. Kellie said she certainly felt the support of all of the team when she was creating the items for the competition. They were made in their kitchen with every step being photographed and documented for the entry, there was plenty of nervous energy (and not just from Kellie). Apparently Kellie is best described as a perfectionist with very high standards, so her win is not surprising, and is great for all of the locals who have made Buck's Bakery their place to go for great bread and bakery products.

Hitting the runway in New York By Sonia Clark
Local Landsborough designer Natalie Cunningham has just returned from an amazing opportunity of a lifetime when she was invited to showcase her indigenous inspired swimwear and resort wear collection at New York Fashion week. To feature her collection at this prestigious, internationally recognised event is a major achievement for the local mum and an incredible validation of the quality and originality of her designs. It also represents the culmination of over a year of dedicated hard work and commitment in designing and putting together the spring /summer 2016 collection in time for the show – all while still being a busy mum to three young boys. Natalie is the first Australian Indigenous fashion designer to show at New York Fashion week. Her collection featured 14 pieces using the work of four different Australian indigenous artists - with each print representing a unique dreamtime story interpretation.
In designing each individual piece, Natalie worked closely with the individual artists. Drawing upon cultural influences, she used the patterns inherent in the prints to inspire the design process. The collection which is designed to flatter all types of body shapes, featured luxury lycra swimwear with inbuilt support, and resort wear made out of 100% silk. The indigenous prints featured hand embellishments and the vibrant and striking colours provided a stunning visual representation of the natural beauty of Australia. Natalie flew over to New York and basically hit the ground running. She had only a couple of days to prepare for the show once she arrived – and the two days were a whirlwind of preparation. Upon arrival Natalie had to get the garments pressed and ready and finalise the model fittings. On the day of the show Natalie was so busy she didn’t have time to be nervous though at the last minute an inspiration for adding traditional indigenous inspired dot painting around the model's eyes proved a bit nerve racking. The show was held at Pier 59 studios in the fashionable Chelsea district, and Natalie was featured as part of a showcase of both emerging and established Australian designers in the ‘ready to wear category’. The response to the show was extremely positive with fantastic feedback from fashion bloggers and international press. “NYFW was amazing!” said Natalie. “I have always loved the fast-paced craziness of behind the scenes - it’s one of my favourite things of my job,” she said.
“Going to NYFW, I met lots of other fellow designers and gained some useful tips I can take on board with my own label.” Feedback locally has also been great with customers wanting to buy the featured pieces straight away! “Because we showed photos fresh off the NYFW runway, on our social media we had people wanting to start buying straight away as they didn’t realise we need to stock shops first and the whole manufacturing process takes time - but it is nice to know they love us!” After the success of the show at NYFW, Natalie is now going into production to manufacture the featured collection. For more details of Natalie’s work see her website for Emu designs www.emudesigns.com.au or check out her social media posts for more behind the scenes shots from NYFW.

The Events Centre in Caloundra is now taking applications for the Scholarship of Performing Arts 2016 which provides $2,500.00 to assist a young Sunshine Coast student towards their future study in Performing Arts. Since 2008 the Centre has provided financial support for eight talented students to pursue their goals and career in the arts, with two of them being locals. In the first year, Sam Robb from Peachester received the scholarship. Then in 2012, Jessie Ryan-Allen, a singer from Maleny who was studying a University Degree in Music, was the scholarship recipient. Jessie, who describes herself as a musician, songwriter and explorer, has been kept busy since then and she has recently released a new EP, ‘Shakespearian Chick’, which has been receiving airplay across Australia. She has spent quite a lot of time travelling and performing in Australia and has just come back from New York where she studied song writing at New York University. Jessie said she would definitely encourage others to apply for the performing arts scholarship, and that the Caloundra Events Centre were very supportive and enthusiastic when she won in 2012. The scholarship is designed to provide assistance to a Sunshine Coast resident, 25 years or younger, undertaking a second year of a fulltime accredited tertiary-level education in the performing arts in 2016. It provides students with a one-off financial

The Events Centre General Manager Gary Mears said: “The Sunshine Coast has an abundant wealth of creative youth and this scholarship recognises the importance of fostering local talent to achieve their ambitions as a performer or arts worker.” Applications for The Events Centre Scholarship for the Performing Arts 2016 close on Monday, February 1, and information is available at www. theeventscentre.com.au/get-involved/scholarship If you would like to find out more about Jessie you can check out her website – www. jessieryanallen.com

Business LocalNews News Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce update with Andrew Prescott
The Annual General Meeting for the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce was recently held and the existing committee members were returned to their respective positions unanimously. Congratulations to all involved. And, while it is encouraging from a continuity point of view to be working with the same great group of people, we are always happy for anyone to volunteer to assist the Chamber with any of its projects. Members don’t have to run a project, unless they want to of course, but we are always looking for help to get things done.
In an effort to make it easier for as many members as possible to attend Chamber meetings throughout the year we have changed our meeting dates. From November 15 all meetings will now be held on the 15th of each month regardless of what day it falls on. And if it happens to be a weekend we are going to be organising something different like a barbeque. More details to follow on this. The Chamber, along with a number of local businesses and organisations, is sponsoring the Celebrate Beerwah Street Party on Friday,
October 16, and we look forward to seeing everyone down there having a great time. I still remember how terrific it was last year and know the Celebrate Beerwah committee have been working tirelessly to ensure this year is even better. Dare I say it, Christmas will soon be upon us, and the Chamber is looking at ways to help business celebrate the festive season and get into the spirit of things. I look forward to catching up with as many members as possible at the Street Party and our next Chamber of Commerce meeting in November.

The Pineapple Patch Family restaurant really is a family owned and operated business. Owners Jocelyn and husband Blaine work there alongside both sets of parents, Jocelyn’s parents Edmund and Helen Lo and Blaine’s dad and mum Brett and Leanne Caldwell. The restaurant has been operating since the mid 1980’s, when Jocelyn’s dad Edmund first bought the business. Originally it was an Australian buffet restaurant, however within two weeks of purchasing the restaurant, Edmund decided to install woks and the business has been serving authentic Chinese food to the locals ever since for nearly 30 years. During the 1990’s the restaurant was sold to an uncle of Jocelyn’s who ran it until 2003 when Edmund and Helen bought it back and now the reins have been passed down to daughter Jocelyn. In a lovely coincidence, Jocelyn met husband Blaine through his work at the restaurant and together they now have four young children. The fully licensed restaurant has seating for up to 120, and maintains a lot of the original decor. With a busy family life (four children under five!) that runs in tandem with the business, Jocelyn and the family have decided to slightly amend business hours. They are now open five days a week from Tuesday to Saturday, from 12.00noon until 9.00pm. The Pineapple Patch is located at 1099 Steve Irwin Way Glass House Mountains, 5496 9466.

Cellarbrations at Landsborough have just drawn the winner of their bumper organic wine and goodies hamper which marks the end of their successful ‘organic wine month’. The month long promotion that ran throughout September had customers sampling a variety of organic, preservative free, organic in conversion and biodynamic wine. Every bottle sold went into the draw to win an organic hamper as first prize with second prize winning five bottles of selected featured wines. Drawn on October 1, the lucky winner was Irene Ribbans who was ‘over the moon’ to be collecting the first prize. Second prize was won by Kay Hook. Response from the customers was excellent and the promotion looks set to continue as an annual event on the Cellarbrations calendar. www.gcnews.com.au

Age gap of a century
Dance to Ray and the Sunshines at the Maleny RSL Maleny’s own Ray and the Sunshines, will be performing at the Maleny RSL on Saturday, October 24 from 6.00pm for 7.00pm, so come along to dance to the 50s, 60s and 70s music and have a great night. The group are to join the cast of this year’s pantomime ‘Cinderella – The Untold Story’ as troubadours. David Crewe, the director and writer of the pantomime, said he was delighted to be able to write Ray and the Sunshines into the pantomime. “Not only will it showcase their great talent, but it will bring a different twist to the show when they perform as the cabaret during the Royal Ball – and they won’t be the reason Cinderella decides to leave!” he said. The group are all members of the Maleny Players and have been playing together over the past 18 months and have appeared at a number of venues singing 50s to 70s songs to very appreciative audiences.

Contributed by John Jennings When Beerwah’s Mary Baker attended her weekly Church of England Sunday service she was not expecting flashing cameras. But, having turned 100 on February 6, Mary took it in her stride and was very happy to greet Lilly Simpson, aged 8 months, for her christening with parents Mark and Debbie of Beerwah. The occasion was even more special for the family with Lilly wearing the same christening shawl in which Debbie was christened, plus Mark’s parents Charlie and Pam were on hand from Scotland, just 24 hours before they jetted home after a five-week break on the Sunny Coast. Work mates and other well-wishers joined the family for the service in front of a large congregation at the picturesque church shared by the Roman Catholic and Anglican groups in a bushland setting. Lilly Simpson and Mary Baker both take the age gap in their stride

Oil a big no no in bins
Beerwah Barber Quality Haircuts - No Appointment Required
There has been a noticeable increase in waste oil filled containers being placed in Sunshine Coast Council’s wheelie bins which has both an environmental impact and poses a serious safety risk. Chair of the Waste Working Group, councillor Jenny McKay, said council had major concerns about the potential significant consequences of placing oil in waste bins. “Waste oil filled containers do not always have secure lids and definitely do not survive the compaction process within the collection truck. The outcome is that the oil spills or explodes over the cabin of the truck and within the compactor,” Cr McKay said. “In addition to the environmental impact caused by the oil going to the landfill there is a significant risk of fire when oil drips onto a hot surface such as the exhaust adjoining the hopper.
“Should a fire occur within the collection vehicle a more significant environmental risk is created when the load is decanted in an emergency situation. “In such instances the decanting will not always take place at a secure waste facility where appropriate controls are in place, it may occur on the road way or some other inappropriate location,” she said. At the end of the day, there is actually no need for waste engine oil to be placed in a wheelie bin at all. Council’s waste facilities accept waste oil without charge for recycling.

Super models Yvonne, Lydia, Judith, Joan, Lynette and Lynda
The Fashion Day raffle was extremely popular, largely due to the 13 magnificent prizes on offer. At the end of the day all that was left to do was to count up the takings. From the entry fee, the raffles, a percentage of ‘Fashions on the Go’ sales and the sale of surplus cakes, etc, we made a massive total of just under $1,000.00. All of this money will be going to the View Club ‘Learning for Life’ program. Our many thanks go to our six 'super models' and all who attended and helped to make this an extremely successful event. ‘Learning for Life’ is a View Club program which provides emotional, practical and financial support to help disadvantaged children and young people with their education. If any ladies would like to attend our monthly guest speaker/lunch meetings and our monthly social outings then we are always on the lookout for new members. To join a friendly group of ladies and, at the same time, help a very worthwhile charity, just phone Maree on 5494 6956 or Gwen on 5494 9786 for more details.

Queenslander’s support tougher regulations on puppy farms
During the Queensland Government’s public consultation on puppy farming, around 95% of the 8,300 people who provided feedback on puppy farms in Queensland, strongly supported compulsory registration for dog breeders in the state. Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries Bill Byrne said after an initial review of the surveys a few key themes are emerging. These will guide the strategy to end this cruel practice of over breeding, he said. It also includes support for breeder identification numbers to be inserted on dog’s microchips and to be displayed where dogs are sold. “As with any industry, there are those people that do the right thing and those that don’t, and the regulations we will develop will focus on the approximate 100 large scale puppy farms where profit is put above the welfare of puppies and breeding dogs,” Minister Byrne said. You Said It Great local service
I just wanted to give a big thanks to Rachel and Lance from Beerwah Specsavers. On September 28 the screw on my glasses dropped out and I couldn't find it, and the lens wouldn't stay in. So I went to Specsavers at Beerwah, the shop was gone, I read the notice on the window, that they had moved further up the complex. But they were not going to be open until the next day. I went to the new shop anyway, and they fixed them, even though they weren't open and had been exhausted from late nights setting up the new shop. Thanks guys, great local service, with a smile. Brad Peachester
A loss for NBN
It looks as if NBN is losing the plot badly. They have had one wireless tower rejected at Hunchy, another one at Beerwah which looks like an environmental disaster (see Glasshouse Country & Maleny News, September 30), one at Peachester which the community does not want in NBN's location and one at Palm Street, Maleny, that even the local councillor opposes. Your article on page 4 (Glasshouse Country & Maleny News, September 30) headed ‘Beerwah NBN Tower application inadequate’ says basically that the SC Council has expressed serious concerns over the Beerwah proposal in a notice to NBN. They have forwarded an information request over a number of issues - the height of the tower and the environmental impact of the tower. Council pointed out that one listed vulnerable species of Leptospermum is visible right in the NBN photo of the site. And the NBN application, they said, seriously underestimated the amount of vegetation to be cleared on the site. I think NBN staff and Aurecon staff have become so used to having their way in the past in other small communities that they are becoming sloppy and arrogant and seem to be going ahead without properly assessing current sites. Nor are they responding to any recent community concerns in anywhere near a sensitive manner. With NBN now going $15 billion over budget, the rollout program years behind their original dates, and the costs blown out way beyond the government's forecast, there needs to be a serious enquiry into the whole NBN show. What a view
Beerwah local Rob Hill took these amazing photos on Tuesday, September 29 (day of a storm) from the Glass House Mountains Lookout. Thanks for sharing your view with our readers.
In agreeance
Hurrah, thank you for your comment. Yes, Beerwah Library is a friendly place in beautiful surrounds and it is unfortunate these children are using it as a smoking area. The no smoking signs that were in place have been removed/vandalised. Council would do well to have these signs reinstated. The available seating is undercover and is immediately adjacent to both entrances of the community hall and library where these children smoke. Their other objectionable behaviour of swearing, spitting and total disrespect for other people is totally unacceptable. May I suggest some classical music be played external to the library as a deterrent to these children and a welcome to the library and hall visitors? On an extremely hot summer’s day, our water fountain attached to the library building was vandalised. Fortunately, council was quick to replace the water fountain. I would like to thank the council for this quick action and can only hope they will do the same re the No Smoking signs. Name supplied Beerwah
Totally illogical
I recently wrote to the Federal Member, The Hon Mal Brough MP, about what I considered the lack of pedestrian crossings in Landsborough. Anyone who lives in the area will know that the only formal pedestrian crossing is outside Landsborough State School to allow access to and from the school sport’s area.
Mr Brough took the matter up with councillor Baberowski, the local SCC representative for the area whom I suspect passed the query on to the Director of Infrastructure Services for the Sunshine Coast Council, Mr Andrew Ryan. His (Mr Ryan’s) response to Mr Brough, which was copied to me, was, and I repeat verbatim from his letter, ‘Council's assessment is that the Landsborough town centre is currently well serviced for pedestrians with sufficient pedestrian crossing facilities. In the vicinity of the railway station, kerb ramps are provided for pedestrians to cross Cribb Street. ‘There is currently a pedestrian refuge on Maleny Street to enable pedestrian access to the shopping centre and the Museum.’ I assume the ‘kerb ramps’ referred to are to allow wheel chair and walker assisted pedestrians to at least 'take their chances' in crossing this very busy road to and from the railway station and the adjacent car park, provided you can wait long enough for a break in the two way traffic. The refuge in Maleny Street would barely allow for a wheelchair or for a mother with a child in a pram to safely cross Maleny Street, due to the size of this small island, while vehicles are passing in front and behind at the ridiculous listed speed of 60kph. So, as usual, we have to wait until an accident or a fatality occurs before the bureaucracy gets off its comfortable rump and attends to what is totally logical. Oh by the way, the cost would be minimal so there would be no need to dig into the council coffers. Joanna Aitken Landsborough

There’s nothing new about disputes between neighbours over fences or trees. Amongst old documents on a ‘bill spike’ in the Bankfoot House Collection, the Friends of Bankfoot House were very interested to find two 100-yearold letters about the vexed topic of adjoining neighbours contributing half the cost of a new common fence. One correspondent, believed to be Robert A. Bulcock, wrote from Caloundra on July 23, 1915, to "Mrs W Burgess, Glass Mts. Dear Madam, I am given to understand you are copartner with K Grigor in Allot 11 of Section 5 Township of Caloundra, and as I am erecting a house on the adjoining allotment and desire to fence it in, I am compelled to call upon you to contribute your half of the fencing. I propose to erect a 4 plain gal wire fence with posts bored and would like to know how you propose doing your half." His next paragraph involves trees: "I would like permission to fall any useless trees on
your allot. which now obstruct my view of the mountains. I have already felled all trees overhanging the fence both on your side and mine. An early answer will oblige." However, some things have completely changed. The next two documents removed from the spike concerned the sale of koala and possum skins. The dockets are from Moreheads Limited Stock, Station and Shipping Agents and Woolbrokers in Brisbane. The first docket lists two bear skins and 12 opossum skins which netted Mr Burgess two pounds, thirteen shillings and eleven pence on September 24, 1919. The second docket lists nine opossum skins for which Mr Burgess was paid two pounds, two shillings and two pence a couple of weeks later. The price paid for a skin varied depending on the quality or size of the animal. Skins were used to make clothing, rugs and many other items.

Environment Barung Landcare Learning about local ecology
Over the last three days of September, 24 eager participants attended the inaugural Subtropical Forests Ecology Course, presented by Hinterland Bush Links, and supported by Barung Landcare. Held at Maleny and presented by specialists in their fields, the course gave a generous immersion into the worlds and roles of invertebrates / insects, soils, water, the historical formation of the area and plants and animals. Exploring and studying the form and inhabitants of surrounding eucalypt and rainforests, brought a deeper understanding of local ecology, along with knowledge of how to restore and connect the landscape for wildlife to travel and flourish. The course structure progressed from observations (some through sketching) and listening, to practical exercises in collection and identification of species, to broader experiential activities requiring a trip to nearby forests. It finished up with a practical exercise in assessing how a particular local property could achieve its conservation aims while also generating an income. Verbal presentations of the different groups’ suggestions followed and concluded the event, along with the distribution of certificates. There were also night time talks and activities about bats, frogs and the meaning of names of places and certain species in Indigenous language/culture. Entomologist, Michelle Gleeson, pictured with Barung Projects Officer, Jonathan Waites, brought vibrancy and illumination to the world of insects in a way few had experienced before. For enquiries about next year’s Subtropical Forests Ecology course, contact Susie Duncan at Hinterland Bush Links: E: wilderness@hotkey.net.au P: 5429 6622 Barung Landcare is a leading community-based organisation working to develop ethical solutions for a sustainable future. Koala Joeys is a program filled with music, movement, rhymes, dances, and storytelling. It is a fun interactive program to help parents develop an understanding of early literacy, numeracy, emotional and social skills, gross and fine motor development. There is also a focus on the importance of play for learning in the early years. By attending Koala Joeys you can be more confident that your child will easily transition to school. We would like to encourage those interested in the program to come along and find out all about the program on Thursday, October 15 to our initial parent meeting and registration day at 8.45am at Glass House Mountains School Hall. The program will operate every Thursday morning from 8.45am – 9.45am (followed by a short tea or coffee break) starting on October 29 and running through until November 26. We will meet in the school hall any time after 8.30am for an 8.45am start. For more information please contact the school on 5439 3222 or look at our Facebook page Koala Joeys@Glass House.
In to the colour zone
Contributed Kylie Merola Landsborough State School's recent annual Fun Run brought a kaleidoscope of colour to the school grounds as students, family members and teachers participated in the event. Hosted by the school's P&C Association, the 'Crazy and Colourful Fun Run' was the major schoolwide fundraiser for the year. The aim was to raise funds, celebrate the school community and get active in a fun and relaxed way. Students collected donations to support the school, then completed an obstacle-style course set up on the school oval. Other obstacles on the course included tyres to step through, balance beams, hay bales to jump over, an army net to commando crawl under, a mud pit to run through, plus a huge slip and slide. Thanks to the Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade who were there, spraying the children with fire hoses each time they ran past. Thanks also to a number of local area businesses
Parenting for their support including Landsborough Tyre Service, Landsborough Hotel, Beefy's Pies, Sunland Proteins and Armesto's Transport. And a huge thank you to everyone in the local community who supported this event by sponsoring a student or helping out on the day. This year is 'The Year of Reading' at Landsborough State School. Therefore, all funds from this year's event will be used to purchase literacy and reading resources for the enjoyment of every student from Prep through to Year 6.

Community Newsletter
By now you should have received my spring newsletter in your mailbox. These newsletters are a great way of updating residents of Glass House on what I have been working on for our community and share information on any local achievements. This recent newsletter included an update on some of the issues I am fighting for on behalf of our community, which also contained a link to petitions we have sponsored for flashing lights at Peachester State School and traffic improvements in Woodford. Please be sure to add your support to these petitions by visiting my website. The other way that I ensure our community is updated on what I am working on is through my monthly eNewsletter. As mentioned in my mail out, all emails registered for my eNewsletter by October 31 will go in a draw to win a $250.00 IGA voucher, so if you have not done so already, pop by my website and register – www.andrewpowell.com.au.
News from Parliament
During the last session of Parliament, I was able to address the House on the vital service that rural firies in Glass House provide to our community. We really would be lost without their invaluable dedication to protecting our beautiful region. Part of my speech addressed the recent report that the Finance and Administration Committee had endorsed the LNP's workers compensation policy. The Labor Party's proposal was unfair and discriminated against volunteer firefighters by forcing them to attend 150 fires before they could be eligible to receive compensation if they contract certain kinds of cancer. The LNP's Bill ensures a firefighter full-time, auxiliary or volunteer - who suffers a disease deemed to be 'work related' receives workers compensation immediately. To see my speech make sure you visit my website.
Christmas artwork competition
I am pleased to say that I will be running my Christmas artwork competition again this year and all students in the Glass House electorate are invited to submit a nomination. The theme this year is asking the students to draw their favorite Christmas tradition and all schools will receive an email from my office during the first week of Term 4 inviting students to submit their artwork to this friendly annual competition. The winning entry, and several runner ups will feature on my Christmas newsletter that will be mailed to all households in December. They also receive a prize for their efforts - and the overall winner scores a class pizza party. Any students interested in participating should contact their teacher or they can download the competition entry form from my website during the first week of October.

Marvellous Mooloolah update
As always, it was wonderful to see the many local residents and members of the business community in attendance at this month’s Mooloolah Breakfast Meeting at Kenny’s @ Mooloolah. Key topics discussed included the street sweeper as well as the speed limit on Bray Road, the Brandenburg footpath and Mooloolah Christmas tree decorations. If you are interested in keeping up to date with local projects or raising any issues or queries, be sure to come along to the Mooloolah Breakfast Meetings held on the first Thursday of every month at 7.00 for a 7.30am start. Contact Mooloolah Community Centre, Darryl from Mooloolah Hardware or my office on 5441 8043 or email Lesleigh. elmes@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au for further information. Still in Mooloolah, I’d like to extend a special welcome to the new manager of the Little Munchkins Early Learning Centre, Charmaine Park. This centre is such an important part of the local community and I’m sure Charmaine will do a wonderful job in her new role. Finally, I’m disappointed to report we are still awaiting a response from The Honourable Jackie Trad, MP, Deputy Premier, Minister for Local Government regarding the Queensland Rail land we would like to see utilised as a youth skate facility.
Maleny Recreation Draft Master Plan
The Maleny Recreation Draft Master Plan is being considered by councillors at tomorrow’s Ordinary Meeting. If the draft plan is endorsed, it will be open for public review and consultation. I will ensure to keep you informed of the opportunities for you to have your say.
Inspirational women of the Sunshine Coast
A wonderful new awards program has just opened up for nominations, dedicated to recognising the generosity of women who give of their time and skills to encourage and inspire others and build a stronger community. The inaugural Sunshine Coast Inspiring Women Awards is all about honouring well known and also unsung heroines of the community. Nominations close November 20 and can be made through the awards patron, Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson’s website: www.fionasimpson.com.au Finalists will be announced on December 7 and the awards will be presented at a gala dinner on February 27.

Cafe de Fudge
Travelling to and from Maleny, I have discovered Cafe de Fudge (next door to the Big Barrel Winery) which is a great place to grab a quick takeaway coffee and something sweet to eat. It is easy to access, has plenty of parking and the couple who run the business are just so friendly.
Great eats and treats in Maleny! They have a great range of fudge (which you can have cut into tiny bitesize pieces), as well as a range of other great sweet items that are all baked on premises. Last week when I popped in I tried a gluten-free uncooked fudge slice made with roast cashews and apricots which was a great tasty combination.

There is also beautiful Rocky Road, as well as individually wrapped muffins, and slices of cake. And yes, I am hearing you – it is definitely not as relaxing as taking time out to sit and chill out in their lovely surroundings, but the coffee and food is also lovely when you are on the run!

As well buying limes by the kilogram at a very reasonable price, there will be freshly made lime cordial, lime and lemon butters and lime slice on offer. Bring the family and come for breakfast and coffee before you fill up your green bag at this local market. The Maleny Film Society screens Far From Men on Saturday, October 17, 7.15pm (dinner from 6.00pm) at the Maleny Community Centre, 23 Maple Street, Maleny. Featuring a superb original sound track by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis and starring Viggo Mortensen, ‘Far From Men’ is a gripping tale of friendship and mortality set during the Algerian War. Daru (Viggo Mortensen) is ordered by the French Police to escort Mohammed (Reda Kateb) to a nearby town to stand trial for the murder of his cousin. This sub-titled French film is based on ‘The Guest’, a short story by Albert Camus, which writer/director David Oelhoffen has expanded to produce this extraordinary powerful film which was widely acclaimed at the 2014 Venice Film Festival. Dinner at 6.00pm is catered by Wild Rocket @ Misty’s. Check the website www.malenyfilmsociety.info for more details.

You have seen them on television, and on Saturday, October 24, you will have the chance to meet Alisa and Lysandra at Forty Winks at Morayfield. They will be in-store between 1.00pm and 3.00pm where they will be hosting an exclusive bedroom styling session. Forty Winks has forged an exclusive design collaboration with the famous renovation twins, engaging the style stars to design and launch an exclusive four-piece bedroom suite. Born with a Scandinavian influence, the design duo have introduced the rawness of timber mixed with the softness of fabric and the elegance of rose gold to create a contemporary and sophisticated collection of products. “When designing the suite, we set out to create inspiring pieces that were unique, something that hadn't been seen before,’’ Lysandra Stevens said. “We also wanted to stay true to ourselves and with what we believe represents us as designers. We have created a suite that is on trend and unique that will appeal to a wide market, bringing to life something that people could envisage putting in their own bedroom with that added sense of luxury.” Alisa Ayres said: “Forty Winks is an iconic bedding retailer, and an extremely well known and trusted brand, so we were thrilled to be given the opportunity to partner with the business to design an exclusive bedroom suite for their customers around the country.” Asta by Alisa and Lysandra is now available at participating Forty Winks stores nationally for a limited time only.

Do you need advice for your Christmas or 2016 home reno’s? Now is a great time to think ahead about preparing for the upcoming Christmas and summer season, and also the new year. Here at Jaz Build, we encourage our clients to consider any preparation and potential renovation decisions in plenty of time. Typically people will call with last minute requests that are impossible to complete in time, but by planning and booking ahead these jobs can be easily completed to let you enjoy the silly season. People should also be prepared for summer. Leaking structures should be repaired before the rainy season – as water damage can be serious. Check your roof, gutters, fascias and other areas that need repairs. In our region, white ants are also a major concern, so either check your property yourself thoroughly or give John at Glasshouse Country Pest Control a call on 0407 439 526.
Christmas is often an expensive time of year. Jaz Build has found that clients are enjoying the great benefits of investing in their own property, and creating a perfect entertaining space. A new bar, deck or outdoor entertainment area will bring the party to you and save money in the long term. Who doesn’t want to relax and take in the great surroundings we have in the Hinterland and Glasshouse Country region? Outdoor zones provide an extension of the family home and the opportunity to have some fun in a safe and comfortable environment. Popular additions currently include pizza ovens, fire pits, pool decking and outdoor BBQ's, as well as new patio’s to extend the family living area. Also popular are requests for extensions to provide extra room for guests and / or more space for the family. We offer people design advice that can include
changing the feel of a dull room to lighten the space and revitalise your home. You can't buy the views we have in city real estate – so make the most of this lucky country region and let us assist in helping you fully enjoy your living space.

Melaleuca viminalis form Exploding into bloom all over the Sunshine Coast is one of my favourite Bottlebrush cultivars, Captain Cook. This wonderful cultivar has proven itself as a very hardy and beautiful native shrub to around 1.5 to 2m. It produces masses of scarlet red brushes that are laden with nectar throughout Spring and Summer. This brings in many species of nectar feeding birds, bees, gliders and possums. It looks best in full sun and can handle a wet spot in the garden. We recommend pruning it annually to maintain a bushier shrub and more flowers. Go Green Rainforest Nursery, 2620 Steve Irwin Way, Glenview is open Monday to Saturday 9.00am until 4.00pm. . Happiness does not come when we are reluctant to accept a new situation, or a new challenge or difficult responsibility, but when we embrace it and thank God for the opportunity to grow. Mary did not simply resign herself to her fate. She saw God acting, God loving, God offering, and she unreservedly embraced her new life and found true happiness by living her life with a grateful heart. Take the time today to think of someone or something worth being thankful for … and when you do, just remember that it’s not what you have in your pocket that makes you grateful … being grateful starts inside your heart! Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship The secret of a happy, joy-filled life, I believe; is a grateful heart. There can never be a possibility of a life of happiness, if we can’t learn to appreciate what we have. Take Mary, Jesus’ Mother as our example. Mary’s free and full response to God’s purpose for her life is a great example. Her song, found in Luke 1:46-55, is the beautiful expression of a heart full of thanks: “…My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Saviour. For He has regarded the lowly state of His maidservant; For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed. For He who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is His name…”

Sport Glasshouse District Little Athletics Contributed by Troy Delacy Athletes under 6 to 17 have now been back and are competing in all track and field events for season 2015/2016. This season the committee have invested in a new recording system to have all our athletes results go live on a web based program where they can review their own times/ distances and keep track of their personal best attempts. This has been a great change for our club and parents are enjoying the fact that they can simply log on and have a copy of these. New to this season for Little Athletics, is Under 11 athletes are now doing high jump flop, and not scissors. Even though our season has kicked off already, we are still taking nominations, so if you wish

Just for Laughs
It Costs No More To Hire A Proven Professional
My favourite things Botox and nose drops and needles for knitting, walkers and handrails and new dental fitting. Bundles of magazines tied up with string, these are a few of my favourite things. Zimmer frames and cataracts, hearing aids and bus passes, poly grip and Fixadent and false teeth and glasses, pacemakers, W.I and Warblers that sing, these are a few of my favourite things. When the pipes leak, when the bones creak, when the knees go bad, I try to remember my favourite things, and then I don’t feel so bad. Hot tea and crumpets and
corn pads for bunions, no spicy hot food or food with cooked onions. Bathrobes and heating pads, hot meals they bring, can I remember my favourite things? Back pain, confused brain and no chance of sinning, thin bones and fractures and hair that is thinning. And we won’t mention our short shrunken frames, when we remember our favourite things, when the joints ache, when the hips break, when the eyes grow dim, then I remember the great life I’ve had, and then I don’t feel so bad. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 Earlier this week the new Moon gave you revolutionary feelings and so the rest of the week is all about making new starts. Some news may be shocking! Again, decisions have to be made fast to keep up with the rapidly changing circumstances. PISCES February 20 – March 20 You achieve the greatest success by balancing your accounts, clearing away debts, and displaying thrift and resourcefulness. Yes, it’s time for rediscovering your latent talents and assets. The Scorpio Moon this week intensifies feelings in relationships. ARIES March 21 – April 20 This last new Moon Tuesday was in the sign of Libra which is opposite your sign. This denotes change and excitement for you in your love life or partnership. It could also mean anything from a new dating prospect to wedding bells! Make a fresh start. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 These are good days, now that Mercury is moving direct, to create a budget or consult with a conservative financial advisor. Credit decisions or purchases should be based on practical reasoning. You now have the determination to tackle any task at hand.
GEMINI May 22 – June 21 Tuesday this week found the new Moon in your compatible sign of Libra. So the rest of this week goads you to break new ground regarding romance, or going to parklands playing on the swings with children. This rekindles the spark to remember your childhood. CANCER June 22 – July 22 A more experienced or senior person could help moderate your rising emotions and set you on a stable path forward. Because passions intensify until Friday, I suggest do nothing but review your discussions about a future plan, or long distance relationship. LEO July 23 – August 22 Hopefully you will probably start, after reading this, with a brainstorm, as you now have special planetary energies to make desired changes. These changes are especially beneficial in family and domestic concerns. You should make those much better! VIRGO August 23 – September 22 The new Moon that happened this week was all about your self-worth; it means you carefully weigh up the alternatives. You are not to take any chances, instead plant seeds for financial future security. Keep pursuing your top number one ambition now.

Week beginning 14/10/2015 LIBRA September 23 – October 22 This week sees involvements, and situations running the gamut from fascinating to disappointing, depending on how much fantasy you allow in that, overrides basic realistic ambitions. Supportive grape-vine information bolsters a hunch about property. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 Today and tomorrow the Moon is in your sign, Scorpio! This can feel really sweet until late Thursday when everything seems to go into nothingness. From the weekend you then find that you are taking charge in a group situation. Are people being realistic? SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 With Saturn moving through your sign, after the long period of 29 years, it’s time to increase your business income. Your social and love life have a welcome shot in the arm! If joining a unique group make sure it generates excitement. Keep truthful friends close. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 With the Moon going through the sign of Scorpio there is a secret game plan you are waiting to put into action when the time is right. This can be over the weekend when a friend gives you the motivation and intensity to draw you into an ambitious plan.
