Hi Everyone Well the old saying ‘what a difference a week can make in politics’ pretty well sums up the issue surrounding whether or not the Landsborough Courthouse would be lost to our community. The message we were hearing last week was that consideration was being given to the closing of courthouses as part of the ongoing cost saving initiatives being introduced in Queensland. What strikes me as strange is that the Attorney General Mr Bleijie has now said that incorrect reports in the media over the past few weeks had created unnecessary anxiety for a number of suburban and regional communities. It would seem to me that when the speculation started last week it might have been kinder for them to confirm that no courthouses would be lost instead of saying that the general public would have to wait and see what the outcome would be
when the budget was brought down in September. So it would seem our courthouse is safe at this stage – so maybe as locals we should be making sure that we value this community asset and use it, see the full story on page 3. Another win that our community celebrated this week was the sporting success of the students of Beerwah High, taking the front page photo coincided with the Athletic success of Usain Bolt, and the students were more than happy to oblige with a group ‘bolt’. Let’s hope some of them might end up competing in an Olympics someday. Regards,

It was nothing less than a gold medal winning performance at Beerwah High last week, when the school’s 81 strong team of athletes were announced the Central District championship for the 18th consecutive year.
But unlike the nation’s Olympic team, the accolades continued to flow, with the school also producing six of the 10 age champions, the girl’s trophy, and the percentage trophy. The record breaking achievement is a feather in the cap for the school’s strong athletics program, according to acting head of department, Damien Bogatek. “Here at Beerwah High we have a really well supported athletics program, and combined with a number of really talented students, we have managed to continue our very strong tradition of athletic excellence for yet another year,” Damien said. Damien said the secret to the school’s ongoing success was the commitment of its students. “This year, Beerwah High also took out the percentage trophy, and we were competing against a lot of bigger schools, so it really goes to prove the high level of participation rates amongst our students, and their winning attitude, not being afraid to get in and have a go,” he said.

Beerwah High’s overall age champions were Rowan Sutton (14 years boys); Rhonda Byrnes (15 years girls); Jake Chalmers (15 years boys); Jessica Haigh (16 years girls); Mana Taripo (16 years boys), and Mitchell Harvey (17 years boys). Keep an eye out for a former Beerwah High athletic champ, Lindsay Sutton, who will be out to put the school’s athletic prowess to the test when he competes for his country in the upcoming Paralympic Games in London, in discuss. Visitor Information Centres in frontline for Sunshine Coast tourism push Sunshine Coast Destination Ltd (SCDL) has taken over the management of Sunshine Coast Council’s nine Visitor Information Centres (VICs). CEO of SCDL, Steve Cooper, has welcomed the move stating this as a proud moment and significant event for tourism in the region. "This exciting new structure will create closer ties between tour operators and Visitor Information Centres and makes sense - we will now be working collectively as one tourism team," he said. Mr Cooper said visitor information services play a key role for tourism in the region. "While the trend towards visitors researching and booking holidays online continues, these same visitors also value personal recommendations once they're in their destination.

"That's where the local knowledge, guidance and friendly welcome provided by VIC staff and volunteers can make all the difference. VICs are the frontline of our region's tourism industry,” added Mr Cooper. The decision follows an independent report into council’s Visitor Information Centres, recommending the centres be managed by the tourism industry to allow; a greater focus on tourists, a greater focus on the needs of the tourism industry, a more effective and efficient model, improved synergies with tourism marketing and a better experience for tourists. The change in management means the Sunshine Coast will still have 17 Visitor Information Centres, nine run by SCDL, six by community organisations and two by Tourism Noosa. Settler’s Rotary Park, Reed Street, Glass House Mountains is one of the nine run by SCDL. Visitor Information Centres operate as an important community facility and make a significant economic contribution to tourism, by providing information to visitors that encourages them to stay longer, spend more money, experience more attractions and return to a region. In recent years, there has been increased recognition of the role of visitor information centres and their importance in providing high quality tourist information.

Common sense reigns as Landsborough locals celebrate win By Kylie Wyer
It was looming as yet another David versus Goliath battle, with locals gearing up to take on the will of a state government seemingly intent on stripping the life out of small communities. But this is one battle where it seems, common sense has finally reigned. Earlier this week, the state government announced it would spare the 30 courthouses that had been earmarked for closure, much to the delight of locals, who had been preparing to go into bat to keep the Landsborough Courthouse open. It came as music to the ears of the Landsborough Area Community Association, who last week were lamenting the possible closure of the Landsborough Courthouse, which they believed seemed inevitable. LACA treasurer Ken Husband said the closure of the facility, which he estimates services a population of around 30,000 across the hinterland, had seemed a likely reality following earlier news of the state government’s latest cost –cutting measures. Secretary Ken Leitch agreed. “It would be yet another loss of an amenity that locals rely on, meaning we would have to drive to the coast to access the range of services currently on offer here,” he said. “It was certainly a concern, with the current trend of governments closing everything down, yet promoting the decentralisation of services.” Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Jarrod Bleijie has confirmed that no Queensland
courthouses will be closed as part of the Newman Government’s cost saving measures in the September budget. “We understand the important role courthouses play in providing a range of Ken Leitch and Ken Husband necessary services had held grave fears for the to local residents, particularly in regional Landsborough courthouse parts of the State,” Mr Bleijie said. “We are committed to providing all Queenslanders with access to justice, regardless of whether they live in the Brisbane CBD or the most remote areas of the State.” The Landsborough Courthouse, which is open from 9.00am - 4.30pm Monday to Friday (closed 12.45pm - 2.00pm) provides access to a wide range of state government services, from paying fines, registering births, deaths and marriages, vehicle and boat registrations, a range of court services, lodging applications for housing, and Justice of the Peace services. The courthouse, which sits in between two other government properties, the Landsborough police station and the sergeant’s house, has recently been restored, with a new roof and external painting among the renovations. The original building was built in 1941, when it was home to both the police station and the courthouse, and over the years little has changed, other than an extension at the back of the building. The original lock up also still stands on the site.

The Sunshine Coast Youth Partnership is currently calling for youth aged 15-25 in the local area to get involved in planning and co-ordinating a series of events for young people, by young people. The initiative, funded by a grant from the Community Gambling Benefit Fund, aims to promote the connection between young people and adults, and the benefits of working together, according to SCYP senior project officer Tom Turner. Tom said the purpose of the project was to re-engage Beerwah youth with the business and wider community. “Beerwah has previously been recognised as an area where there aren’t as many opportunities for young people, and that is why we’ve chosen it as part of this new initiative,” Tom said.
He said the concept was to provide young people with the necessary training, mentoring and support to conduct three local events, each with its own budget, as well as optional additional activities such as funding and sponsorship opportunities. “Our aim is to hopefully strengthen ties between youth and the local community and businesses, by actively engaging them in the planning and delivery of youth activities,” he said. He said another key component of the project, as with all SCYP events, was to continue to try and dissolve the myth that the only way to have fun was with alcohol and drugs. Other projects the youth partnership has been involved in previously include the Future Leaders program, Raw Sounds Festivals, Twilight movies, the Sunshine Coast Youth Summit, Australia Day and Safe Schoolie events. Tom said there had been a great response to the initial information evening last week, with positive feedback from around 20 interested participants. To get on board with the project, come along to the next meeting today, Wednesday, August 15, at 3.30pm at BADYACC, or ring the SCYP office on 5479 0070.

Growing Calendar girl status in Glasshouse Country Earlier this month, GCNews introduced readers to a local calendar girl, Heather Rutherford of Beerwah, whose image appears in the latest Lymphoedema Association of Queensland calendar. Last week, we caught up with another local calendar girl, sixyear-old Brianna Carrinton, of Glass House Mountains.
Like Heather, little Brianna suffers from Lymphoedema, however her story couldn’t be more different. Brianna developed lymphoedema in her right leg after a domestic plane flight when she was only three-months-old, and she remains one of only two known cases of lymphoedema in children in the state. For the first few years of her life, she had to wear a special compression bandage on her leg, however today, after meticulous management and care from her parents and support from the Lymphoedema Association, Brianna is making terrific progress.
For the past 18 months, the condition has improved to the point where it is now only her toes which need to be bandaged every day. That, combined with daily lymphatic drainage massage, and extreme care of infection, is the only thing that sets this happy, bright little girl apart from any other. “Fortunately, the condition hasn’t stopped her from doing anything else little girls of her age do,” said mum Danielle. “She has been able to develop normally and lead a normal life, and we’re really hopeful that she will eventually grow out of it,” she said. Danielle and her husband Adam, who also have another child, five-year-old Cooper, remain grateful that the condition is not worse. “We’ve spent a lot of time over the years at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Brisbane, and the nature of Brianna’s condition means she is treated in the burns unit, so in comparison, there are many others who are suffering much more than her,” Danielle said. “We’re often asked if we regret going on that flight when she was an infant, and the answer is no. We’re so glad we went on the flight and have been on this journey, and that Brianna is where she is at today. “Things might not have went so well if she had developed the condition later in life.” As for Brianna, she remains unfazed by all the attention her covergirl status has created amongst her family and school friends at Our Lady of the Rosary in Caloundra, and that is just the way it’s meant to be. Last week Council staff along with Division 1 Councillor, Rick Baberowski, released the Place + Beerwah Council Action Plan and Community Action Plan to the community focus group at the Beerwah RSL. The ‘place making’ process is an integrated approach that grows unique, resilient and vibrant communities so they develop a sense of place and belonging. Council has been working with the Beerwah community for almost twelve months to determine the future direction of Beerwah. As a result of a series of community and focus group meetings, the two action plans are now open for viewing on the Council’s website (www. sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au) or hard copies are available at the Beerwah Library. One of the key actions of the Council Action Plan is the development of a public domain masterplan for Beerwah, the implementation of which is budgeted to commence in the 2013/14 financial year. The formation of an umbrella group is identified as a cornerstone to facilitate the delivery of the Community Action Plan. If you are interested in getting involved in the Beerwah umbrella community organisation you can contact Holly Aston directly on 0407 165 308 or email hcdworker.holly@gmail.com

Community called to help celebrate Former Beerwah student receives Mooloolah’s 150th Indigenous An important time in history is in sight. Mooloolah is turning 150 in 2013! scholarship Anyone who has an interest in Mooloolah, local history, creativity or
organising fun events is urged to come along to a town get-together next Wednesday, August 22, 6.00pm at the Mooloolah Public Hall. Much of the Mooloolah area was settled back in 1863 when there were many prospects for a good life, including timber, the Mooloolah river and healthy soils. Soon Mooloolah became a home to many, where long-term livelihoods were established, schools and services started, farming and timber industries operated and rhythms of bush dances filled the public hall. Community development worker, Natasha Odgers, said this was a once in a lifetime opportunity for people to do something special for the town and such a historic occasion. “Celebrations of all kinds come and go but when a town turns 150, it is an extra special time for the community to come together and show what this place means them,” she said. “We encourage as many people as possible to come and share ideas of how they would like to celebrate Mooloolah’s 150th Anniversary. Everyone is welcome, including kids,” Natasha said. Come along to the Mooloolah Public Hall on Wednesday, August 22, at 6.00pm. Free supper will be provided. If you are interested in being involved, but cannot make this time, please contact Natasha at hcdworker. natasha@gmail.com or How would you like to celebrate the big event? 0418 720 515.
A Biomedical Science student and a postgraduate Arts student have been awarded Indigenous scholarships to help pursue their careers through the University of the Sunshine Coast.
Beerwah State High School graduate Dylan Shaw, 19, who is in the second year of her Biomedical Science degree, has received the Australian Rotary Health’s Indigenous Health Scholarship worth $5,000. The other scholarship recipient was Jamie Hagan of Bokarina, who received a USC Indigenous Jamie Hagan and Dylan Shaw Postgraduate Scholarship valued at $4,000. For both students, the scholarships have reduced the financial pressures associated with studying. Dylan, of Glass House Mountains, said she will apply for an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cadetship with the Australian Federal Police this year so she can work in forensics. Last year, Dylan received USC’s first Jalarema Indigenous Scholarship and USC’s Indigenous Access Scholarship. Senior Lecturer in Nutritional Biochemisty Dr Mark Holmes said Dylan was a worthy scholarship recipient. “Dylan is a high-achieving student in the Bachelor of Biomedical Science program who has expressed a keen interest in specialising in either forensic science or clinical trial management,” he said.

Academic releases books on children’s brain development
Should parents enrol their toddlers in enrichment programs and surround them with smart toys to educate them as early as possible? This is one of the hot topics addressed in two new books by University of the Sunshine Coast education academic and author Associate Professor Dr Mike Nagel Michael Nagel. One book, ‘Nurturing a healthy mind: Doing what matters most for your child’s developing brain’, distils the latest global research in neuroscience into an easy-to-understand format for parents and general readership. Published by Exisle Publishing, it is available now as an e-book and will be in retail stores later this month. The second book, ‘In the Beginning: The brain, early development and learning’ is targeted at the education and health sectors as well as parents. Published by the Australian Council for Educational Research, it is also being used as a textbook this semester in USC Education courses. Dr Nagel said he had referred to his own studies and examined extensive research to underpin his findings, such as the lasting impacts of relationships, care and environment on a young child’s brain development and overall healthy development. “For example, there is no empirical evidence that educational toys and enhanced tuition programs can make a three or four-year-old smarter, despite the global growth industry around this,” he said. In addition, there was no neurological benefit from trying to quicken a toddler’s learning and brain development before they reached school age. “To support normal, healthy development, a child simply needs love, nurturing relationships and opportunities to play and explore,” he said. “That’s why a baby enjoys the box more than the toy inside with the bells and whistles.” His research analysis showed the best ways to encourage language skills and enhance vocabulary development were by responding to children even at the early babbling stage, talking to them and reading to them. Another of Dr Nagel’s findings related to the much-debated topic of what effects smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol during pregnancy might have on a foetus. “People may not realise that a baby’s brain is an electrochemical mechanism that starts to form just 17 days after conception so any chemical, nicotine or alcohol, can have an impact on that brain from then,” he said. “This means the brain is forming long before many women realise they are pregnant so it’s probably better to stop smoking and drinking while trying to conceive.” Dr Nagel has been in demand across Australia this year as a keynote speaker on children’s brain development.

Mooloolah performed their arts off Live music rocked the Mooloolah Public Hall on Saturday, August 4 at the Mooloolah Performing Our Arts Off night. Headline acts, ‘Wilderness of Fury’ got the crowd dancing and John Arthur Gould gave all a good laugh. The open program filled quickly with lots of local talent from country music and poetry to rock and roots tunes. Event organiser and performer from the ‘Bamboo Rockets’, Vern Gibson, said a great variety of performers came along to enjoy the night. “This is a great way for the wonderful array of performers and musicians living in the hinterland to show off locally. We have people who work professionally as entertainers, plus others who have put that behind theM and only play for the fun of it, as well as the up-and-comers testing out new material. It is a great opportunity to mentor new talent and even form new collaborations. “Having performed thousands of gigs, this is one of my favourites,” he said. “A big thanks goes to the Sunshine Coast Council for their support for the event. The volunteer organisers now have purchased some sound equipment which is available for hire at community rates,” Vern said.

The Glasshouse Mountains Musicians Club Contributed by Dr Michael Whiticker
We were pleased to have a special guest at the Musos Club this week in Anu Grace accompanied by Laurie Bycroft on bass. Anu, who also plays ukulele and flute, sang her own songs in a cheeky, delightful way and was enjoyed by everyone who attended. There were requests for her album, but we’ll have to wait for a few more months. Keep your eye on her website http://www.anugrace.com or ask us. She’ll be back down this way later in the year to put the finishing the touches on her album, so we’ll hope to have her back at the Musos then. Other performers at this Club session included the superb singer guitarist Tommy Leonard, who continues to astound with his choice of beautiful repertoire, most of which is unknown to us – convincing proof that the work that is made available via the radio waves is really only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to fine songs and, for that matter, talented singer guitarists! On that subject, Greg Bryant once again supplied us with a set showing off both his song writing
talents and engaging voice. Greg assured me he had a cold and was a bit down – if only most of us sounded a quarter as good when in top shape! Doug Solow began the proceedings this session, wanting to feature his instrument of choice – the bass, in an uncharacteristic setting. He sung us a number of popular songs from the 50s and 60s accompanied solely by the bass – a novel approach, and welcome at this Club where artists are encouraged to try things out! Later in the evening Clive Bilby, accompanied by backing tracks, gave us short set of solo guitar songs of the Shadows. Someone commented they hadn’t heard one of the songs before and Clive noted that the Shadows had released 600 odd songs! Now that is an impressive canon! Other performers this week include Aaron Tregea, Paul Fagan and yours truly making up the numbers. We welcome new performers of course and are always looking at ways of encouraging more people to get up and play or sing a song. http://www.facebook.com/groups/musosclub/
Levy drives sustainable transport use
Sunshine Coast residents and visitors can now get the latest information about public transport in and around the region, thanks to a free guidebook developed by Sunshine Coast Council. Funded by the Public Transport Levy, the ‘Guide to Public Transport on the Sunshine Coast’
includes tools, information and advice to get more people out of cars, and onto public transport. The ‘Guide to Public Transport on the Sunshine Coast’ is available from council offices, libraries and visitor information centres. It can also be viewed online by going to council’s website.
Register now if interested in using council land for business
Sunshine Coast Council wants to hear from anyone interested in conducting business from council-controlled land, with Registrations of Interest invited until August 31. The Registrations of Interest process will help council gauge the level of interest in the use of council-controlled land for commercial purposes. Council will look at how much, and in what location, community space should be offered for commercial use. Council will assess the information and determine the types of activities that can take
place at various locations – a need highlighted by the review of council’s Commercial Use of Community Land policy last year. In March next year, all interested members of the community will have the opportunity to submit an Application when the 2013 Commercial Use of Community Land application process – including the agreed locations and activities – is advertised. For further information, or to register your interest, visit council’s website or one of council’s Customer Contact Centres. AUGUST 15 2012 |

Big year for Michelle It has been a busy year for Michelle Christopher – Blockland. First she started the year off by opening her new accounting business, Hinterland Accounting Services in Beerwah with Leisa Thistlethwaite. And secondly, she has had a precious little baby boy, Hunter. Yes, not the best timing in July for a new baby for an accountant, but Michelle has stepped up to the task. She is obviously a great mum as Hunter is a very content little guy, giving Michelle the opportunity to continuing working on a daily basis (which Leisa is very thankful for). Congratulations Michelle, enjoy your little fellow, they grow up too quickly.
Are cupcakes good for animals? Well the ones that are being sold at the Lookout Cafe next Monday, August 20 between 9.00am – 3.00pm will be very beneficial to the animals being cared for by the RSPCA. Noelene, Rochelle and Elise who have only recently taken over running the Lookout Cafe and have impressed the locals with their great food, were keen to be able to do something in their business to support this worthy cause. The cafe located at 182 Glasshouse - Woodford Road, will be donating all proceeds from cupcake sales on the day to the RSPCA.

‘A family pub’ a social asset at Glass House - Under New Management The Glasshouse Mountains Tavern and Campfire Restaurant is in its eighth year of popular service and is a ‘village pub’ in all senses of the word. The new Managers of the tavern; Sean and Debbie Docherty say they have fallen in love with the town and the friendly people. They intend to make it their home for a long time, and welcome everyone to Glasshouse Mountains Tavern, as they will make it the fun place to be, where everyone knows your name, and families are welcome. Sean and Deb are experienced hotel managers that have previously worked for the Pointon Group at The Grand in Gladstone, and The Metropole in Townsville. They bring with them Darren O’Hara, their Retail Manager, who will work closely with Cellarbrations to give locals a drive through bottle shop with weekly specials at very competitive prices. Darren has already put into place everyday home deliveries for alcohol. Drive through and speak to Darren, and if we don’t stock it, Darren will get it in for you. Darren's mission is to offer
you the best prices in town. The tavern offers a variety of relaxing dining options in a themed Australian outback style. Whether it’s a light lunch, dinner for two, a work party, a business lunch, a family night out, or on the veranda alfresco style - the tavern’s Campfire Restaurant is the ideal place to dine, open seven days for lunch and dinner. Our acclaimed chef Damian has a new mouth watering menu incorporating a Steak House theme, featuring Nolan Meats Private Selection range which carries the guarantee ‘delivering pleasurable meat moments – every time!’ The new menu has a selection of tavern favourites, and our signature dishes include Guinness Lamb Shanks, Smokey BBQ Pork Ribs, Veal Scallopini Dijonnaise and our famous Beach Prawn Curry. We have included in our menu a selection for Seniors at only $12.90 or our Sunday for Seniors at $9.90, and kids eat for $6.00 or eat free on Fridays.
To introduce the new menu, the tavern is offering meals at half price on Friday night, August 17 (bookings are encouraged). The one-night only offer will see meals at $10.00 or less, which Sean says, is a great opportunity for patrons to try the chef’s culinary creations. The tavern offers live entertainment every Friday and Saturday night. Sean is introducing a new range of entertainers which specialise in pub rock, some blues, and all those covers we can all sing along to, and the top 40. The tavern is equipped with a children’s room, decked out with Playstations, TV, DVD’s, toys and books. The tavern’s Lady Luck Gaming Saloon currently offers a prize offer of 4.5 star holidays at Oaks Hotels and Resorts. “We place a lot of emphasis on our dynamic friendly staff, who pride themselves welcoming the locals and getting to know you,” Sean says. Re: Carbon Tax Fiasco
There has been much debate in recent years about pollution of the atmosphere, Global warming and the increasing production of carbon dioxide gasses by coal-fired power stations. Our Government's answer to reducing these emissions is to impose a ‘carbon tax’ on the guilty parties. If our Government (and others) were really interested in reducing the amount of pollution and carbon in our atmosphere, they could do so by implementing the simple, cheap technologies that have been around for over 50 years. I refer to two proven technologies, one for converting internal combustion engines to 'clean air' emitting exhausts and the other, electric power generators driven by magnets, with no airpolluting emissions. The simple technology for running petrol or diesel engines on water converted to hydrogen gas (produced on board the vehicles), has been around for over 50 years. Water is the only fuel necessary to run these engines and the power output is actually greater than that from petrol or diesel. Other types of hydrogen gas generator kits are already mass produced for fitting to any vehicle. They cost from $299.00, take two hours to fit and they can reduce emissions by up to 80 per cent whilst increasing mileage by up to 60 per cent. Patents exist for the production of the simple adaption of any vehicle to run solely on hydrogen gas but the multi-billionaires who own the oil companies have used every means available to suppress their development. As for electricity, there have been hundreds of types of generators constructed by inventors (one
in Cairns) that run solely on magnets. Compact generators capable of supplying all of the power needs for homes can be produced for as little as $2,000.00. One of these installed in a home would mean no more power bills EVER! These generators could easily be scaled up to supply whole cities with power at a fraction of the cost with zero carbon emissions. One has to ask, who really is running the Country, when Middle East oil cartels are able to dictate to our Governments that we must all be forced to rely upon and use their costly and filthy products, rather than make the change to clean and sustainable transport systems. Does it make any sense for Governments to pay householders $8,000.00 grants to install solar panels on their roofs, when for a quarter of the cost, they could supply magnet driven generators to everybody which not only reduce power bills but abolish them altogether? David Bennett. H.H. Dip. (C. Hyp.) Glass House Mountains
High price to pay?
A cool change coming?
What are our priorities?
In response to Retsel's letter (GCNews July 25) I'd like to make a couple of points regarding the climate. While we live in a warmish period, where changes in climate can be observed, the warmest period in this interglacial occurred between 6,000 and 8,000 years ago. During that time vast forests grew in areas that are now icy tundra. Egypt and Mesopotamia had subtropical climates and had much higher rainfall than today. The more recent Roman (250BC-400AD) and Medieval (900-1300AD) warm periods were also warmer than our current time yet without big industry to apparently heat the planet. The Sun's output does vary over time and also the Earth is already creeping out to a more elliptical orbit where we will inevitably return to an ice age. It is a cyclical phenomenon and government legislation is unlikely to have any impact. I certainly agree with Retsel's underlying concerns that we should tread more lightly on the Earth, however the overly simplified message about carbon dioxide and problematic warming will not necessarily play out that way. I disagree with your sentiment Retsel that scientists offering alternative views are all receiving dubious financial backing. You might like to get hold of a copy of ‘Chill’ by UK scientist and environmentalist Peter Taylor. He is a former adviser to the UK govt on alternative energy and sources some of his information from the UK Treasury office website to offer arguments that the future is more likely to be colder. Curiously, the British Government is currently trebling the size of its snowplough fleet. Now why would they do that? Jon Woodlands Conondale
The only thing to be learned from the recent letters on the carbon tax is that statistics can be used to prove anything you like, and never mind the facts of climate change with the extreme weather events around the globe. There is no doubt that there are costs in facing up to this challenge. The choice is to do what is needed now or be a party to the destruction of our planet and the consequences for our children. A high price to pay. I was informed that the rise I in my electricity bill by way of the carbon tax will be $3.30 per week. There will be other costs no doubt. This is an incentive to all to look again at how we use the energy resources we have squandered in the past. At least our government has made the effort to assist those people on lower incomes. The whinging seems to be loudest from those who can well afford to pay, for example the mining companies. Pam Lever Beerwah The other day I was dismayed to see a boy riding his bicycle to school along Glasshouse Mountains Road, aka Steve Irwin Way, between Glass House Mountains and Beerwah. This road, the old Bruce Highway, already carries more traffic than it was designed for, without now also putting cyclists at considerable risk. Have we got our priorities right? We can spend tens of thousands of dollars on what they say are wonderful town signs and yet we don't have a decent footpath and a (separate) cyclists' path alongside this busy road, which would cost very little to do. Surely we should be looking at infrastructure for residents (particularly where risk to life and limb is concerned) before glitzy back-patting trimmings? And buck-passing between the Council and the state government is no answer. Name Supplied Peachester
Urgent call for fabric donations
The Range community has generously donated surplus fabric, haberdashery and sewing equipment to the Maleny Rotary Club over the last few years. The fabric is used by widows in the villages around Port Moresby to make clothes for their families and products for sale to supplement meagre household incomes. September is the month that the villages hold their annual fete and we have received an urgent call for fabric to help them make products in time for sale at this special annual event. If you can help with donations please call us on 0434 260 532 or 5435 2106. Thank you so much. Karen Binstead President, Rotary Club of Maleny

You Said It
Enough is enough
To those who attended the event at the Christian college on Saturday, August 8. I would like to thank you for your continued disregard of local residents of Roberts Road. The fact that you continually park across people’s driveways totally blocking all access to property amazes me. Apparently common courtesy no longer exists. Thankfully I was working an early shift on this day and missed the whole event. My family however was inconvenienced through your total disregard for others in the fact that no one could get in or out, or park at our property. As a resident of Roberts Road we have seen a lot of change and begrudgingly accepted it, we have learnt to live with the fact that most days at school times we can no longer access our property and we have learnt to arrange our lives around you. We have accepted the continual construction (as a shift worker this can be extremely frustrating and sleep depriving), we have taught our children to be aware of the people that drive down the grass verge so they don’t get run over. We even tolerate the continual school bell that rings throughout holidays for no one. I have even had people move my garbage bins because they were in their road. But enough is enough, when you don’t have the common decency to do a quick letter box drop of local residents to inform of some event that may cause some inconvenience. The lack of respect and basic common courtesy for the residents of this road, feeling that any space is a car park especially for you, amazes me. To drive down my own street during school time is like playing some ridiculous game, with people opening their car doors into oncoming traffic, cars pulling out of the college in front of other vehicles and on top of pedestrians. I am sorry if this offends those of you that do the right thing, however as I mentioned to begin with enough is enough. Roberts Road resident Beerwah

as a school based apprentice since the start of 2011. He will complete his Cert II this year and hopefully gain an adult apprenticeship. The support and genuine caring environment created by Trish and Terry and the staff makes such a difference in a young person’s life. Because of them Alex has grown into a more confident young man, and can at least head out into the workforce with skills and a great work ethic, a large part of which they have helped develop. Not only have they supported his progress personally they gave him a wonderful gift of a MIG welder so he can continue to hone his skills. They will still be available should he need any pointers or guidance. I am sure that any successes Alex enjoys in the future will be due in no small part to the start Trish and Terry have given him and while thank you seems insufficient, I hope they know how highly they are regarded. A little courtesy would help
To the lady from Mooloolah who aggressively blew her horn at my granddaughter who was turning into our driveway at around 11.30am on July 18. Firstly she had her indicators on to turn left and she was turning into our driveway. I would like to point out to you that for you not to have seen the indicators you must have been going too fast and driving too close. The speed limit on Connection Road, Mooloolah is 80km, tailgating is a traffic offence and unless you’re in distress blowing your horn is also an offence. All drivers have to learn, as did we who hold a driving license, so perhaps a little courtesy would help. Most people who have a residence that turns off Connection Road get this same treatment all the time. Please remember road rules apply to all of us. Kathy Johnson Mooloolah
Changing times Les Thomas of Glass House Mountains recently came across these photos of Glass House Mountains in photo frames that someone had donated to the Recycle Market. He was wondering if a longer-time local might be able to tell him when the photos were taken. If you know, can you let Sarah at the GCNews office know? Her email address is reception@gcnews. com.au or phone 5438 7445.

I would just like to thank the people responsible for keying my car on Thursday, August 9 parked behind the shops on Cribb Street. Community Group Updates Glasshouse Country SES
Contributed by Patricia Bradford
By Dave Erbacher
Recently, members of the Glasshouse Country SES Group participated in a Vertical Rescue course on Mt Ngungun and the shed. Six members from Glasshouse were joined by members from Maroochydore, Coolum, Nambour and Kenilworth. The Vertical Rescue course is the pinnacle of training for our members and only undertaken after months of pre-requisite courses to ensure complete safety at all times. The course was conducted over two full weekends including some night work. Group Training Officer Lou Spann was assisted by other trainers from Gympie and Emergency Management Queensland. Special thanks to everyone concerned in the successful running of these courses and congratulations to all for their time and efforts. Glasshouse group welcomes Tarra Tipper, Louise Murray, Cameron Harmansen and Brett Tipper as members who are now qualified to lead Vertical
Rescue Teams in future callouts. Well done. Group Leader, Robert Barry said that he was very pleased with the effort of trainers and course members and welcomes the newly qualified members which greatly assist in being able to form rescue teams in the future.

All children must be supervised by an adult. We have capped the number attending this workshop to 40 so get in quick. Other workshops in the pipeline include a frog identification workshop on Saturday, November 18, a plant ID workshop (numbers being finalised, so be quick), self wicking raised veggie gardens, and dam care and water plants.
It was a pleasure to welcome so many representatives from other garden clubs to our Friendship Day in July. A special welcome to Glenis Bruin, our Queensland representative of the Garden Clubs of Australia and Dorothy Tyrrell, ambassador of the Queensland Council of Garden Clubs. Guest speaker, Noela Woodward was welcomed and her demonstration of floral art was absorbing. With a selection of flowers, containers foliage, berries, a couple of ribbons and small ornaments, Noela proceeded to demonstrate how to arrange different things to make her creations, ranging from small table centrepieces to larger arrangements. Noela kindly donated her creations for raffle prizes. Thanks go to members who made a special effort to contribute to a showy competition bench. Results for June, tie first Kath Howitt and Coral Beutel, second Pam Innes. Many thanks to all members who worked so hard to make our Friendship Day so successful, it was a wonderful day. Next meeting is on Thursday, August 16, 9.30am in the Peachester Hall. We hope to have a showing of images from Rob, Jeff and Coral’s visit to Taiwan. Visitors always welcome. Committee Member Steve Brieschke, and Newsletter Editor Sheila Williams. The Good Neighbour Award for August was presented to Graham and Jan Cheal, nominated by Betty Pringle, who said “I have known Graham and Jan Cheal for about 40 years, and have no hesitation in nominating them. Not only was Graham involved in the setting up of Beerwah NHW; he has also been involved with the SES for many years, working hard in that capacity. Jan has worked for the Charity Sports Day for many years, and has also been a block co-ordinator for Beerwah NHW.” Steve Brieschke should have received a National Volunteers' week award at the last presentation by MLA Andrew Powell, but an e-mail glitch interfered. Consequently, the award was presented by the Area Co-ordinator. Steve was also presented with a certificate marking 20 years of devoted service to Beerwah NHWQ. More than meets the eye when it comes to good health Most of us are aware of the outward signs of health and fitness, but it seems there’s a lot more to good health than meets the eye. And that is where Biological Impedance Analysis can help. Biological Impedance Analysis (BIA) is a scientifically validated test that can help reveal the true state of your health, by measuring body fat and protein mass, extracellular water, hydration and biomarker index, or your bio age. And the best part about it is that it’s available locally. Charlotte Herring of Sage Centred Natural Therapies Clinic has been trained in taking body impedance measurements, and is currently offering a great special of $50.00 for an assessment. By monitoring changes in body composition and cellular health, let Charlotte develop an easy to manage program to help improve your overall

health, with a combination of natural therapies, healthy eating and exercise. If you’ve ever watched The Biggest Loser you might be familiar with bio age, another measurement of your overall health which the BIA can reveal. Unfortunately for many of us, our bio age is much older than our actual age, however with a carefully designed program Charlotte can help you improve your overall health. A world of fantasy
Some children always want to be in a place of adventure or magic. What is needed is imagination, a photo software program and photos of the children. Select a photo where the child is engaged in doing something then choose a suitable background. It could be a magical forest, sea or outer space (photos are available on the internet for limited use if you don’t have your own). Take both photos into your software program of choice; in this case it is Photoshop. Using the quick selection tool the child was selected and moved to the background. To make it more realistic use the smudge tool and create a shadow. Brushes may be added to create more interest or magic. Brushes could be clouds, sun, flowers or other objects. The photo displayed was originally taken while the child was playing in the sand.
U3A Grafx Group meets at Beerwah Library each Thursday from 3.00pm.
Practical tools for authors at book planning workshop Local authors will be able to tap into a wealth of knowledge and support at a one day Author Book Planning Workshop being run by local book coach and editor, Alex Mitchell. Authors will explore what their message really is, who they are speaking to and how they ‘sound’ as an author. They will find a pattern for their thoughts and bring this into a concrete plan for their book. “Having a clear plan will drastically compress the timeframe to complete your book,” says Alex. “Clarifying your message, market and structure before you begin will save an enormous amount of time and money. “Trying to fix these areas after the book is written is the number one avoidable mistake made by new authors,” she said. Emerging authors can choose from two dates, August 25 or September 22 for the workshops in Landsborough. The cost is $247.00 which includes full tuition, all meals and a personalised step-by-step take home action plan. Alex said for many local authors, attending this one day workshop could be the key that gets their book back on track and out into the world. For more information, visit www. AuthorSupportServices. com or give Alex a call on 0434 088 742. www.gcnews.com.au
Grab your cookbooks and move your mixer to centre stage, it’s time to bake the world a better place and raise much-needed funds for Australian Red Cross. Launched in 2011, Big Cake Bake is a community fundraising campaign for Red Cross everyone can take part in. Just by baking your favourite cakes, slices or biscuits and then hosting an event, you can make a huge difference to the lives of those who need help the most. “Cooking for my family and friends is a way for me to show them that I love and care for them. In a similar way, Big Cake Bake is a chance for all of us to show that we care about those in need. So please get out your mixing bowl, put on your oven mitts and make a difference,” says Australian Red Cross Big Cake Bake ambassador Marion Grasby. To become a Big Cake Bake host, register at www.bigcakebake.org.au and you’ll receive a kit with a special oven mitt and all the information needed to run a Big Cake Bake event. On Monday, August 27 and throughout August and September, hosts will be cooking, sharing
and enjoying delicious homemade treats at home, workplaces and social groups while raising funds for Red Cross. Every dollar raised can make a big difference to those who are experiencing everyday difficulties. Raising $150.00 will help Red Cross give vulnerable young families around Australia vital support and skills so the parents can provide their children with the best start in life. “We all want to see change so please join me in the kitchen and support Big Cake Bake too,” says Australian Red Cross Big Cake Bake ambassador Kate Ritchie. Visit www.bigcakebake.org.au and register as a host – plus, there are great prizes to be won. Simple, fast, mobile – new iphone app helps students Students no longer have to call or visit Centrelink to update or check their payments, thanks to a new app for iPhone and iPod touch. Minister for Human Services Senator Kim Carr said the app – the first developed by the Department of Human Services – will help make life easier for up to 350,000 students who receive Youth Allowance, Austudy or ABSTUDY. Senator Carr said the app gives students more flexibility to manage their obligations to the Department of Human Services. It is simple, user-friendly and will save people time.
Students can complete the most common reporting requirements quickly and easily from any location – without having to call or visit an office. They can report employment income, update course details and check their account history. The app – Express Plus Students – also helps prevent debt by sending Push Notifications when students have to report and keeps payments accurate by helping to calculate work hours. Students can download the Express Plus Students App from the App Store. Versions of the app for other platforms will be available soon.
Google+ Local for Small Business Research shows that 82 per cent of all Australian’s now go online to find their local business services and of those 92 per cent use Google. This is 12 times greater than the use of the Yellow Pages. Question is – when customers are searching for your services or products can your business be found? Almost all businesses will rank for their own business name but not for their product and service related keywords. A typical search query from a new customer will typically include ‘keyword + location’ not ‘your business name’. Recently Google made a massive change to the way they display the search engine results and it directly affects local business. Google incorporated their social media product ‘Google+’ into their local search engine ‘Google Places’ and this new interface is known as ‘Google+ Local’. This update directly affects how your business appears in the search results. Google+ Local organises the world’s information around geographical places and displays the results on a social media interface. For the end user, Google+ Local search results appear automatically in the form of snippets and pushpins when Google predicts you’re looking for local information. This is Google’s direct online challenge to the Yellow Pages and the statistics show it is working. For local business – this opportunity opens a new frontier for marketing and those who get in first will have the advantage. Google+ Local offers your business a mini-site featuring photos, testimonials and reviews, opening times, images, videos and other details about your business. It also allows your customers to directly
get involved in providing reviews, promoting your business and sharing it with their friends. If you own or operate a local business then now is the time to ensure your listing is claimed, verified and complete. Importantly, every business needs to go through this process even if they don’t have a website. An unclaimed business listing is open to editing by the general community including competitive businesses and can be a security risk if left unattended. It doesn’t stop there, claiming your listing just isn’t enough. The local search results will only show the top seven results and sometimes only the top three unless your listing is well optimised for the Search Engines. An optimised listing will target more customers; show up in the search results more frequently and will convert new business at a higher rate. Lisa and Ian Creaser have extensive experience working with Google Places, Google+ Local and Search Engine Optimisation. To have your Google+ Local business listing claimed, verified and optimised call geoLocalSEO on 07 5494 8735 or visit http://www.geolocalseo.com.au/ Business feature AUGUST 15 2012 |

health! We all know that eating right, exercising, and maintaining stress levels play a major role in our health. But where does Chiropractic come into play? The following principles explain: 1. The human body is self-healing and self-regulating. We are genetically programmed for health. 2. This self healing and regulating is controlled by the brain via our nervous system. 3. The nervous system is surrounded and protected by our spine.
You may notice a few changes to Wellness Chiropractic, as Dr Braxton is the new owner, and he is more excited than ever to help the Beerwah community with their health concerns! For all of Dr Ray’s fans, there's no need to worry, as he'll still be around for his usual Tuesday and Thursday afternoon shifts, while Dr Braxton is available six days a week, including most Saturdays. So what does Chiropractic have to do with health? Most people know chiropractic to be a remedy for headaches, neck and back pain. While chiropractic is very effective in dealing with these symptoms, the development of chiropractic was never about symptom relief. Wellness chiropractors such as Dr Braxton neither claim nor attempt to treat any symptom, including pain. They simply aim to restore the body to its normal function. Surprising news to some, the normal state of the human body is pain free, symptom free, and filled with vitality! (Of course there are always exceptions to the rule, but this is the general rule.)
If we make choices that support our body's natural state of health and vitality, it is very likely that we will be able to move away from chronic pain and recurrent sickness. Treating the symptom may give you short term relief, and require less effort, but it will never correct the cause. At Adjust to Life Chiropractic, our approach to health is quite different from treating symptoms. Our approach is focused on enhancing health, and staying away from sickness altogether. The above diagram clarifies this. As you can see, the 'Treatment Paradigm' stops once we reach the neutral point of no signs or symptoms. At Adjust to Life, we encourage the 'Wellness Paradigm', which begins at any point and continues all the way through to your highest level of health.
4. Spinal misalignments, known as subluxations, affect the function of the nervous system. 5. Chiropractic restores and enhances spine and nervous system function, and restores the body's ability to regulate and heal itself. If you'd like to know if spinal subluxations are the cause of your health concerns, or if you're tired of chasing symptoms, fighting chronic pain, or just want to reach your highest level of health naturally, call us today for a Free Spinal Checkup to determine if you may be a candidate for chiropractic care.
With this approach, we remove ourselves from the left side of the spectrum (sickness), and begin to express our genetic potential for abundant

Senior Moments Looking to move into a retirement village or know someone that is? Living in a retirement community is a great lifestyle choice for retirees, providing an instant social network and low-maintenance homes specially built for comfort and security. Unfortunately though, buying a retirement community home can be difficult and confusing, as many hidden traps and costs await the unwary buyer. Before starting out, follow these five tips from Australia’s leading expert on retirement communities and author of ‘Don’t Buy Your Retirement Home Without Me!’ Richard Andrews: 1. Make the move early. Don’t wait for the move to be ‘forced’ on you by family or circumstances and make sure you are still active enough to enjoy the community life. 2. Plan to stay for the long term. Leaving a retirement village triggers most of the fees and charges that are applied during your stay. You need time for the growth in the value of your unit to reduce the impact of such charges. 3. Negotiate everything. Most buyers don’t realise that many parts of the retirement village purchase contract can be negotiated, particularly in the current market where many retirement villages are struggling to make sales. 4. Get good advice. You will no doubt be spending several hundreds of thousands of dollars on your retirement village unit. Paying an expert for their advice can not only save you money, but can give you the peace of mind that the contracts are in order and that you have received the best deal possible. 5. Above all, never rush your decision. Take your time and make sure you will feel comfortable in your new residence.
These top tips have been provided by Richard Andrews, author of ‘Don’t Buy Your Retirement Home Without Me!’
Seniors share in one million free journeys Seniors across South-East Queensland have claimed their fair share of free travel as TransLink announces customers have taken over one million free journeys since January 2011. Deputy Director-General Neil Scales said the combined Seniors Card + go card has proved popular with over 50,000 already being distributed throughout Queensland since November 2010. "When travelling using this card, seniors pay only 50 per cent of the full adult go card fare. One hour after completing two journeys in a single day, they then can travel anywhere on the TransLink network for the rest of that day for free" Mr Scales said. “With a Seniors Card on one side and a senior go card on the reverse, this single, convenient card offers all the usual seniors’ discounts and concessions across Australia plus easy access to TransLink services in South East Queensland. “Using the card is easy – simply touch on at the beginning of the journey and touch off at the end, and the fare is automatically deducted from the card balance. This means seniors won’t need to queue at train stations or search for change when buying tickets. “Seniors can top up at selected newsagents, convenience stores and train stations. The card can also be registered with TransLink to protect the balance if the card is lost or stolen, meaning it’s safer than travelling with cash," said Mr Scales. Seniors can apply for a Seniors Card +go card by calling 13 QGOV (13 74 68), through the Department of Communities website at www.communities.qld.gov.au/seniorscard, or by posting an application form available from their local MP’s office or library. For more information on public transport, visit the TransLink website translink.com.au or phone 13 12 30, anytime.

Senior Moments Walking not enough for older Aussies A new study has shown that most elderly people engage in only one type of physical activity, which tends to be aerobic exercise, mostly walking, which needs to be coupled with other exercise forms to enhance other fitness dimensions. The study, featured in the May 2012 issue of The Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport (JSAMS), published by Sports Medicine Australia,

looked at physical activity in older Australians aged over 65 years using the Exercise Recreation and Sport Survey, the only available surveillance system that collects information on types of leisure activity for a period of 12 months. The study highlighted that an increase in participation in balance enhancing activities and muscle strengthening is needed to maximise health benefits. Lead author of the study, Dr Dafna Merom from the University of Western Sydney, School of Science and Health and an Honorary Associate of the School of Public Health, University of Sydney, says that in order to maximise health gains in old age, there is a need to engage in a range of activities that improve not only cardiorespiratory fitness but also muscle strength, flexibility and balance. “Participation in regular physical activity, and the types of physical activity undertaken may discriminate between adults who successfully age from those who do not,” said Dr Merom. Results from the study showed that of those surveyed, 32 per cent did not exercise at all in the past year, and 40 per cent participated in one type of activity. Of those, 53 per cent engaged exclusively in walking.
“Walking may not provide optimal protection for prevalent adverse health conditions. For example, the most efficacious exercise programs for falls prevention were those that included high challenge balance training, for example tai chi,” said Dr Merom. “Whilst those that only walked are one step ahead of those not participating in physical activity at all, to improve their health they should increase their participation in a wide range of activities that will improve balance, coordination and reaction time,” said Dr Merom. Dr Merom says more research on what sorts of enjoyable physical activity preserve successful ageing is needed.

Looking after yourself with a breastscreen every 2 years
A HEALTHIER QUEENSLAND IS
Medicine packs If you use medicines regularly it can be hard to remember whether or not you have taken them. It’s also easy to mix-up your medicines and accidentally take the wrong tablets. To make sure this doesn’t happen, the staff at Mooloolah Pharmacy can assist you with a ‘Dose Administration Aid’ or medicine packs. As mistakes with your medicines not only reduce the effectiveness of your medicines, but may lead to serious health problems, using a DAA is one way of reducing the likelihood of making mistakes. You may find a DAA useful if you would like to better understand your medicines, take a lot of medicines, have difficulty remembering when to take your medicines, or you travel regularly. Benefits of a DAA is that it helps you to better manage your medicines, reduces the chance that you may forget to take a medicine, or take it twice, as well as reducing the chance of experiencing any side effects from your medicines, through ensuring you take the right dose at the right times, and even stop you having to go to hospital for medication mix-ups. If you would like to know more call in and see the staff at Mooloolah Valley Pharmacy, Jones Street, Mooloolah or give them a call on 5494 7777.

Out and About
Fantastic fun for 101+ reasons Glasshouse Country Christian College’s 2012 Funfest was fantastic fun and the 101 generous community sponsors were just the beginning. Sponsors donated a multitude of items to a giant auction as well as making large contributions to food and beverage stalls, and marquees. GCCC families also donated liberally of their time, talent and goods. Each year level took on a stall. Prep classes held a craft and strawberry stall, Year 1 specialised in cakes and baked goodies, Year 2 sold toys, Year 3 ran the book stall, Year 4 put together mystery jars and so the list goes on. One of the most popular stalls was run by Year 10 who ran the ‘Splat the Teacher’ game. Their stall alone raised more than $800.00 with a queue of eager students ready to drench their favourite teacher. As well as market, craft, food and drink stalls, there were dodgem cars, a giant swing, a moon shuttle ride and a skirmish obstacle course spread across the two car parks. Children of all ages took their chances on the bucking bull while around the corner a jumping castle and cup and saucer ride catered for the younger children. Queensland Fire and Rescue Service Koala enjoyed lots of hugs as he spread his message, but three other visitors were kept at arm’s length. Alma Park Zoo brought a crocodile, a snake and a large lizard but no one lined up to hug these un-huggable critters. Face painting was popular and the non-stop stage events kept everyone entertained. GCCC’s Parent and Friends Funfest Committee was responsible for the huge success of the day which raised a lot of funds to help improve facilities for the students.

Wearing my transport portfolio hat, I'm really pleased to recommend the seriously good, new booklet that council has produced about public transport on the Sunshine Coast. It has pretty much everything you need to know, except timetables, (which change too often for these big print run booklets), on transport options, maps and community transport services. The booklet is paid for out of your Public Transport Levy and the aim is to make it easier for you to use public transport where possible. The network map alone is really worth a look and I encourage you to consider using it to make your next recreational trip. You can pick up a copy from any council office, library or visitor information centre.
Local projects
You may have encountered the traffic controllers on Caloundra Street, Landsborough as we fix the parking and access problems for 44 Caloundra Street. As with all the local projects, I will be pushing up the standards of finish and landscaping to ensure we reach our potential both as great community centres and visitor destinations. The new bus shelters in Old Landsborough Road have now been improved by some additional landscaping and the new amenities in Mill Park will look even better after some adjustments to the design.
Favourite Sunshine Coast place
This week’s favourite secret Sunshine Coast place is the rock-holes and cascades of Coochin Creek at the foot of Tower Hill. A Glasshouse Country local confirmed that it’s, “a beautiful spot with interesting geology and landforms long used by local young people for swimming and recreation.” There is a planned subdivision in the area and locals will be pleased to know that conditions have been made to protect the water quality and natural values of Coochin Creek. The subdivision will connect to the existing reticulated sewerage system and stormwater runoff will be treated to current best practice using vegetated bioretention devices. Contact me about Division 1 activities by calling the office on 5420 8987 or email rick.baberowski@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and don’t forget to mention your favourite secret spot on the Sunshine Coast.

Response: Letter to the Editor
‘We Need Answers from Council’, by Sam, GCNews July 25 Funds have been set aside from the last financial year to place a footpath along Mooloolah Connection Road, however some land acquisition is required. This road is a Main Roads responsibility and council is working closely with the state department and affected local residents to resolve the issue. Council is now revisiting the initial design to take into consideration the cross fall on the bend of road and accordingly might need to take additional time to revisit the design before implementing it. I am aware that this appears to be a long and drawn out process, however it is about getting it right the first time, to avoid revisiting the problem. I also wish to advise that there is currently a designated bus shelter for school children in Martin Rungerts Park. If this is insufficient, please email me with your suggestions at jenny.mckay@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au.
Have Your Say on the Draft Mooloolah Community and Recreation Park
Council staff will be manning a stall out the front of the Mooloolah IGA on Saturday, August 18 and Tuesday, August 21, 5.30pm – 6.30pm to address the Master Plan for the Mooloolah Community and Recreation Park. There will be a display of the draft Master Plan and resident feedback forms available to fill out. Copies of the Master Plan and feedback form will also be available at the Mooloolah Community Centre from August 17 – September 3.
Mooloolah Swimming Pool
I fully appreciate the importance of this community facility and note the concerns from the community to ensure the pool remains open to the public. The current lease between Education QLD and the Sunshine Coast Council for community use of the pool outside school hours expires in November, 2012. Council is continuing discussions with Education QLD and Mooloolah State School about ongoing community access to the pool beyond November.
Breakfast Meetings
The initial breakfast meeting in Mooloolah was a great success, with many community members turning out to have a say. The next meeting will be Thursday, August 23 at 7.30am at the Thunderbirds Café. www.gcnews.com.au
Real Estate and Financial Guide More first home buyers
Development incentives for the Sunshine Coast
The low interest rate environment and more affordably-priced properties are continuing to attract Queensland first home buyers into the property market, according to the Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ). The latest Australian Bureau of Statistics data found that more than 1,650 properties were financed for Queensland first home buyers in June -- an increase of 30 per cent on June last year. And over the June quarter, according to the Office of State Revenue, more than 5,400 First Home Owner Grants were paid in Queensland compared to 4,000 over the same period in 2011. REIQ CEO Anton Kardash said that affordability had long been the name of the game for first home buyers. ‘‘Lower interest rates and low property prices equals more first home buyers who can now afford to purchase a home,’’ he said. ‘‘Housing affordability is the best it has been in a number of years in Queensland and this is just the spark that first-time buyers had been waiting for.’’ According to the REIA Housing Affordability Report, home loan affordability is now at its highest level in Queensland since September 2009. The report says the proportion of family income required to meet average loan repayments in Queensland has reduced to 29.5 per cent, from 32.5 per cent in March last year. And average first home buyer loans are less in Queensland than anywhere else on the mainland of Australia, except South Australia. ‘‘Many of our regional areas offer affordable property and even in Greater Brisbane we have about 50 suburbs where the median house price is under $350,000,’’ Mr Kardash said. Sunshine Coast Council has introduced a range of incentives to build a sustainable economy on the Coast. The changes commenced on July 1 and are in place for the 2012/13 financial year. Pre-lodgement meetings are now held free of charge. This is a valuable opportunity for potential applicants to meet with council staff prior to lodging a development application. Make a prelodgement booking on 5475 7526 or 5475 PLAN. Development application fees have been reduced by five per cent for all commercial, business and industrial land uses. All of the uses listed under the headings of Business and Commercial Use and Industrial Use are included in the five per cent reduction. Development application fees have been reduced by 25 per cent for seven selected land use types. The reduction is a fee rebate issued when use starts within two years. The rebate applies to approvals issued after July 1 2012. The seven applicable land uses are office, shop, medical centre, showroom, warehouse and general industry. For more information about changes to the 2012/13 fee structure visit council’s www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/sitePage. cfm?code=fees-and-charges. To find out more about council’s development services call our dedicated planning phone number or drop into one of the service counters. During business hours visit council offices at 10 First Avenue in Maroochydore or the Nambour, Tewantin and Caloundra offices. Council has a telephone number specifically for development application enquiries, 5475 7526 or 5475 PLAN.

A good place to start is by getting your head around the various costs associated with buying a property and applying for your first home loan.
You should also be ready for stamp duty, which is calculated on your property as well as the size of your mortgage.
While these can vary from state to state, getting a rough estimate together will help you determine how much you will need to borrow - and what kind of a deposit you will require to do so.

This type of financial product is generally a requirement anytime you borrow against more than 80 per cent of the value of your property. The amount you will need to pay is calculated on a sliding scale and will depend on a number of factors, including your loan-to-value ratio. Taxes and fees In addition to the value of your property, the amount of money you have already saved towards a deposit and the fees listed above, there are a number of other important charges you will want to bear in mind.

Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship
The Olympics has provided us many great moments over the years. My favourite Olympic memory would have to be when a 14-year-old Nadia Comaneci scored her 10’s in 1976 at the Montreal Games....it really was extraordinary to watch history in the making! Now you probably don’t recognise the name Derek Redmond, but you might recognise his story. He was a British Olympic sprinter, a record holder and highly favoured to win the 400m race in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. So favoured to win in fact - that as the sprinters warmed up at their blocks, the announcer claimed that he was in the ‘best form he’d shown’. But halfway into his race, he heard a pop in his right leg and he crumpled to the track with a torn hamstring. By a sheer act of will, he struggled to his feet and began to hobble around the track, determined to finish the race. Just as he reaches the stretch, a man pushes through the crowd; fighting off security. That man was his father - Jim Redmond. Jim comes alongside Derek and puts his arms around his son. Their conversation went something like this: “Son, you don’t have to do this.” “Yes, Dad, I do.”
Friends of Beerwah Library booksale
“OK then, we'll finish it together.” And if you know the story....that’s exactly what they did. They stayed in Derek’s lane the whole way, the son’s head frequently buried in his father’s shoulder, and as they made it to the end of the race, the crowd rose to its feet, weeping and cheering. Derek Redmond didn’t win the gold medal that day. But he walked away from the race with an incredible memory of a father who loved him too much to stay in the stands watching him suffer- a father who came to his rescue. And you know God does the same. Some days there are times when the responsibilities of life weigh us down so heavy that we feel like we might collapse under the pressure. In those times, God is closer than we know...waiting for us to lean on Him so that He can exchange His strength for our weakness, giving us His strength to carry on! The Bible says that ‘He is close by my side’ (Psalms 16:8) – and just like Derek’s dad, God is running to meet us and will run right by our side, at whatever pace we are able. What a comfort to know that even when we fall or fail - we are never truly alone!

Beerwah Ladies Golf Club Contributed by Jenny Kelly We had a field of over 100 girls travel from near and far to enjoy a great day of golf at Beerwah on Tuesday, August 7. This was a fun day were the girls got to pay for our club pro, John, to hit their drive off one of our longest holes, number 15. They were also able to back themselves to hit the green on a par 3, and buy ‘get out of trouble’ ribbons, a bit of insurance if you go into the odd bunker or two, or end up in a bit of rough. This year’s event was held in two divisions, with Alley Smerdan and Karen Heading taking out Division 1 with a total of 44 Stableford points. Division 2 was won by Liz Flavell and M. McBride also with a grand total of 44 points. Our Invitation Day is held once a year to raise funds for cancer research and this year all funds raised, over $1,000, will go to Ovarian Cancer research.
Super Strawberry Round 6 Oaklands Farms have done it again, beating several serious contenders to win Round 6 in the Super Strawberry Competition with an entry weighing 143 grams. It is good to see so many farms represented in the quest for this year’s Super Strawberry; but where are the back yard growers? The winning entry could potentially come from a garden bed or a pot plant. There are only two more rounds to go to find the 2012 Super Strawberry. Round 7 closes at 5.00pm on Friday, August 17. Entries can be presented at Coochin Creek Co-op at any time during the week – please ask for David or Helen. The winner of the 2012 Super Strawberry Competition will be announced at the Beerwah Charity Sports and Spring Carnival on Saturday, August 25 at Beerwah Sports Ground. For general enquiries about the Charity Sports, please contact Bruce Page (5494 9557) or Ross Lowe (5494 6654).

Fraser played alongside Qld Bulls players Corey Regardless of the result, the three local boys all Barsby and Chris Lynn. thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Batting first, the Afghans scored 276 in their 45 overs with Talbot opening the bowling and also finishing the innings. His figures of nine overs, no wickets for 70 runs didn't quite reflect his good efforts due to one of their batsmen scoring a very aggressive century. Curtis bowled well in the middle of the innings to finish with five overs, no wickets for 26 runs. Mitchell was shown great faith by coach Brad Murphy who put him into bat at number three, between Barsby and Lynn. Mitchell’s innings ended with a dubious decision after he had compiled Curtis Schofield, Corey Barsby,Talbot Speechley, Chris Lynn, and an excellent 31. Mitchell Fraser
Buy a brick for Tibro’s Netball Club Tibro’s Netball Club is proud to announce that they are in the final stages of approving a quote to build a much-needed Club House. The club was formed in 1988 and has grown steadily since then. However it has become increasingly difficult to run the club with limited storage space and training facilities. The new club house will include a large storage shed, and bench area opening onto lockable roller door windows, as well as a new training wall. We are calling on all local businesses, families, past club players and families to help raise the final amount to make this dream possible. With the ‘Buy-a-Brick’ fundraiser, we have
available a wall which will display names on Besser Blocks. One brick is just $100.00 on the wall to remain there forever! Please contact MaryLou, the club President for more information on 5494 6643. Carnival Round-up Tibro’s Club has been very active this year with teams attending three to four carnivals. Carnivals have been held at Maroochydore, Pine Rivers, Nambour and Caloundra. The club has also been represented well at a Representative level. At the recent Caloundra Carnival held Sunday, August 5, five teams competed with the Diamonds coming in second in Division one.

Beerwah Bulldogs Contributed by Dean Roberts A Grade travelled down to Caboolture on Sunday to take on the Premiers of 2011 on home soil for their final game of the season. The boys were first to score and really did show some courage to go into the sheds at 1210 down at half time. The Snakes flexed their muscles in the 2nd half to win the game 48-14 and will now take on the Gympie Devils at Caboolture this Saturday in the 1st semi final to see who gets a crack at Kawana a week later to earn a grand final spot while Noosa takes on Maroochydore in the knock out semi final. A big thanks to the Beerwah Bulldogs Senior team major sponsors, Gowinta Farms, Beerwah Hotel, Armestos Transport, Beerwah Meats, PieVista Bakery, Top Gun Panel and Paint, Slim and Jean Moroney and all other sponsors for your valuable contribution to the senior teams in 2012 which comes to a close on October 6th with Presentation night at Beerwah. On a Junior Front, our Under 11’s are through to a grand final in their pool to be played at Bribie Island on September 1 and we still have a few teams in semi final contention to earn a spot in the grand finals which Beerwah will be hosting on September 8. Good luck to all teams in the coming weeks. Glasshouse Country Bromeliad Society Inc.
Contributed by Bob McLean Phone: 0427 606 240 Fun, friendship and bromeliads
When you travel around our beautiful Glasshouse Country it is plain to see how we love our gardens and the space we spend our leisure time in. The Bromeliad Society visited the Maleny Botanic Gardens for our August meeting to experience gardening on a larger scale with flowing water, rock terraces, and plants of all different species. Many residents in our community have much smaller gardens than this, but we all have to deal with the same issues; too wet, too dry, too much sun, too much shade, too much wind, or too many critters living for free off our hard work. The time comes when we ask, what do we do to address these problems? We can call a talk-back radio program which means you need to be up quite early, read this section of the GCNews or join a plant society, garden club or horticultural society. Personally I prefer the option of joining with likeminded gardeners to talk, walk and feel, as well as to find a plant that says ‘I can fill this special place in your garden’. The Bromeliad group is one that can do just that for your garden, inside or out, full sun, full shade, part shade, flower or foliage, small or large space or even a wall garden. I have over the past years only shared a few of the thousands of species of broms. As the society members sat enjoying devonshire tea and feasting on the view of the Glasshouse Mountains with a backdrop of Moreton Island to the east, and the shipping terminals of Brisbane to the south-east, we discussed how we could invite more of you to share and enjoy meeting new friends, and learning more about plants. The society gathers monthly, alternating between the Mary MacKillop Centre and a garden visit. We would like to extend an invitation to you to come along, learn about our very versatile plants, join us for a cuppa and meet some new friends. The Brom Bug is catching – but it can be kept under control.

The Glasshouse Country Bromeliad Society is now a contributor to Bromeliad Society of Australia website, www.bromeliad.org.au. You can visit the Club News tab to view the regular newsletters from around the country. You can also visit the Photo Index, where you can look at the Genera and then go to the Species to view plant photos. You can now do your own research while enjoying the beauty of these plants. You still need to consider joining with us to learn how to identify the different Broms and grow your knowledge from there. The next meeting of the Society will be held at Mary MacKillop Centre 160 Peachester Road Beerwah on September 9 at 2.00 pm. The gathering has been postponed one week so as the dads can have special family time. Please bring your own cup for afternoon tea, everything else will be provided. For more information contact President Karen Binstead on 5494 3677 or email sales@ topnotchbusiness.com.au Secretary Margaret McLean on 5496 9601.
Go Green Rainforest Nursery plant of the week Rose Silky Oak Placospermum coriaceum Rose Silky Oak is another beautiful tree from North Queensland’s rainforests. It naturally occurs from Mt Bellenden Ker to Big Tableland near Cooktown. Young plants have amazing lobed waxy leaves up to 1m long with soft rosy pink tips. It makes a superb pot specimen for many years. In the ground it prefers a moist, well drained position in semi shade. In the ground it will reach 15 to 20m and produce showy pink flowers. This stunning foliage plant is definitely worth a go in a pot or in a protected part of a rainforest plot. If you would like more information on this tree or any other native plants drop in and see Simon or Melissa at Go Green Rainforest Nursery, 2620 Steve Irwin Way, Glenview. Phone 5494 5980. Bad parrot
A young man named John received a parrot as a gift. The parrot had a bad attitude and an even worse vocabulary. Every word out of the bird's mouth was rude, obnoxious and laced with profanity. John tried and tried to change the bird's attitude by consistently saying only polite words, playing soft music and anything else he could think of to 'clean up' the bird's vocabulary. Finally, John was fed up and he yelled at the parrot. The parrot yelled back. John shook the parrot and the parrot got angrier and even more rude. John, in desperation, threw up his hand, grabbed the bird and put him in the freezer. For a few minutes the parrot squawked and kicked and screamed. Then suddenly there was total quiet. Not a peep was heard for over a minute.

You’ll also need to be tactful dealing with authority figures. A promotion is possible. Pressure can be put on you, but by taking it easy you can succeed.
SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 This is not a good time to take things to heart. You may feel quite sensitive and a bit rejected. Take things very slowly, as this is not the right time to make important decisions, especially where love relationships are concerned. There can be a change in your work environment. New car is likely. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 A private talk with a work mate can give you some valuable information. However this is not the time to mix business with pleasure. This is a very important time for soul searching and to devote more time to yourself. Renovating the home or a move is possible. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 Deep transformation can be taking place. Your home, your career and your self worth can be challenged. This is a time of soul searching and having the faith that you will succeed in what you really want out of life. Watch that you don’t overspend on luxury items. Some changes can occur with a close relationship. CANCER June 22 – July 22 This is a very important time for you to keep focused on what you want and where you are going. Things should go pretty well your way. You may feel a need to take things at a quicker pace, if this is so, try and take things slower than usual, rushing will get you nowhere. A change of car is possible.

Fearing that he'd hurt the parrot, John quickly opened the door to the freezer. The parrot calmly stepped out onto John's outstretched arms and said, "I believe I may have offended you with my rude language and actions. I'm sincerely remorseful for my inappropriate transgressions and I fully intend to do everything I can to correct my rude and unforgivable behavior." John was stunned at the change in the bird's attitude. As he was about to ask the parrot what had made such a dramatic change in his behavior, the bird spoke-up, very softly, and said... "May I ask what the turkey did?" Pauline Tau, Landsborough
