FEBRUARY 15 2017
I
n the words of John Paul Young – sorry if you are under 50 or have never seen Strictly Ballroom and aren’t familiar with the classic song – ‘love is in the air.’ Apparently February has been declared 'the month of love.' I'm not sure if this is official, but I saw it on the internet so it must be true. I guess if you can purchase Hot Cross Buns from the day after New Year’s Day up until Easter, then anything is possible. It would appear that GC&M News might just be part of this ‘love month’ conspiracy, as last week we featured some tips to ensure those who celebrate Valentine’s Day were organised, and in next week’s edition we will be including a Wedding Guide. As usual, we love to feature stories about locals. So if you are celebrating a significant wedding milestone this year, or have any humorous anecdotes or photos from yours, or about someone you know, then we would love to share them with the readers. Just send them through to editorial@gcnews.com.au Regards,

Waterpark gets the go ahead The material change of use application for stage one of the water activity theme park on Steve Irwin Way at Glenview has been given the okay by Sunshine Coast Council. The 24 hectare park, currently called ‘Actve’, is planned to provide a massive tourism and leisure boost to the region, eventually providing $29 million of benefit to the local economy each year and delivering hundreds of jobs. The approved stage one will see the establishment of the Tourism Zone within the development – covering five distinct areas; the Front Car Park (with 520 car parks), the Front Entry, the Cove, the Great Lawn, and the Waterpark.
However, Council have imposed a large number of conditions, including that the facility is not to operate outside of the approved hours of 9.00am til 9.00pm Monday to Sunday. Also, events and sporting matches are not permitted to be held on the Great Lawn unless prior approval is obtained from Council. Next the company, Sanad Capital, must submit a preliminary Construction Management Plan with the Operational Works application before any onground works begin. Stages two, three and four will be the subject of separate applications. For more details see www. pdonline.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and search for ‘MCU16/0222.

Glenview Road upgrade on the cards A cooperative approach between local residents and Sunshine Coast Council has seen a positive outcome for residents living along the western end of Glenview Road at Glenview. Previous road upgrade works along other parts of Glenview Road gave them hope that the construction would continue right to the Old Gympie Road intersection. However, hope turned to bewilderment when they were told that the rest of the road would not be planned until sometime after 2020, and only then if funds were allocated in the budget. Not content with this, Evans Grove Road resident Brad Boustead organised for a Council engineer to meet with local residents last December to put their case forward. “We had over 20 residents come along, which is not bad for 9.30 on a Monday morning,” said Brad.

And in the right spirit, the officer listened and came through and Brad has received some very welcome correspondence. “It now looks like the project will be considered for funding in the 2017/18 budget, rather than sometime after 2020 as originally indicated,” Brad explained. “So we’ll know after Council’s budget meeting in July whether our efforts have achieved a good result. “It would help the process if locals living along Glenview Road and those nearby that use the road, could contact their local Councillor to let them know that they think the upgrading of this section of Glenview Road is a necessity for funding.” Cr Jenny McKay can be reached on Jenny. Sunshine Coast Airport’s future Palisade Investment Partners will be the Sunshine Coast Airport’s commercial operating partner in a deal worth more than half a billion dollars. Under the deal, the airport will continue to be owned by Sunshine Coast Council, with Palisade operating the asset under a 99-year lease. Palisade will be responsible for operating, investing and developing the airport and will oversee future negotiations with airlines to expand both domestic and international routes available from the Sunshine Coast. Mayor Mark Jamieson said that under the deal, the council would maintain responsibility for facilitating the proposed airport expansion project, which included construction of a new runway, apron expansion and related infrastructure. “The total value to the Sunshine Coast community of the deal we have struck with Palisade is an estimated $605 million. “It is the product of the extensive work council has undertaken to generate national and global interest in the airport – and indeed the Sunshine Coast itself. This helped to generate 17 expressions of interest from both domestic and international parties and heightened the competitive tension in securing the commercial partner in the Airport – all of which has been to council’s advantage. Mayor Jamieson said Palisade would make lease payments totalling $82 million of which $67 million would be paid when they took control of the airport’s management, staff and non-land assets, expected to be by September 2017.
www.gcnews.com.au
Palisade has agreed to a further amount of $290 million to be paid for the construction of the new runway in 2022. Council will retain a financial interest in the operation of the Sunshine Coast Airport by way of an annual rental payment of 5% of gross revenue, conservatively equating to about $205 million over the 99 year life of the lease starting in 2017/18. Palisade will also take responsibility for future terminal development, thereby reducing the projected cost to council of the airport expansion project by $28 million. These four amounts see the total value of the deal worth an estimated $605 million to council. Mayor Jamieson said that by Palisade taking responsibility for the future terminal development, the revised estimate for the airport expansion project delivered by council was now $319 million. “Ensuring the budget estimates for the airport expansion project are met has been a key focus for council, and what we have been able to achieve here is a great outcome for our community,” he said. “Delivering the airport expansion is one of the region’s five game-changer projects identified in the Sunshine Coast Regional Economic Development Strategy 2013-2033 and is an intrinsic element of this council’s long term vision for our region.” Palisade has substantial experience in the airport sector through its investment in Airport Development Group which owns the Darwin, Alice Springs and Tennant Creek airports. Palisade has also recently invested in Gold Coast Light Rail Stage 2.
Mayor Jamieson said all of the pieces of the puzzle were now in place to enable the expansion of the Sunshine Coast Airport to proceed, which would enable this substantial asset to serve the needs of this community and surrounding regions for generations to come. “We have the major approvals in place,” he said. “The Federal Government has committed the $181 million loan which will assist council with the expansion project and now Palisade has been secured as our commercial partner to take the asset forward into its next phase. “The airport expansion project will contribute $4.1 billion to the Sunshine Coast economy between 2020 and 2040 and result in 3500 fewer dwellings being affected by noise when it is operational by Christmas 2020. “It will ensure we have an airport that can accommodate larger, more fuel efficient aircraft, enabling more direct flights to more locations in Australia, Asia and the Western Pacific. “Those new routes will boost our tourism and international trade and help our export businesses, particularly those operating in the food and agri-business sectors, so they get their products and services to markets faster and more efficiently.” The council anticipates entering into a construction contract to build the new runway in September this year. The runway project is expected to be completed by December 2020.

There’s something strange out there, according to Maleny locals, and it’s big. Reports have been drifting about of a “giant cat”, at least one and a half times the size of a beagle, being spotted at Witta. Suzi Sandfort described how her husband thought it was a wallaby due to the size and thickness of the tail, but then it ran away rather than bounding. She asked locals via the Maleny and Surround Chit Chat Facebook page whether anyone had seen something similar. From the resulting discussions, some suggest that it could be a vastly oversized domestic cat, others say it appears to be the size and shape of a mountain lion (or cougar), while others say it was more likely a wild dog. But others related their ‘big cat’ experiences – including from Witta Road, Curramore Road, Aherns Road and Burgess Road. Over the years, there have been many strange local sightings, with the most famous being the yowie encounter at Kilcoy – but yowies have also been reported at Beerwah and Glass House Mountains. Big cats have been reported at Eudlo and Palmwoods, as well as Beerwah and Mons (near Buderim). But then another incident occurred two Saturdays ago, this time at Bald Knob. Margaret McKenzie reported that they were woken in the early hours by a very loud cat growl right outside their bedroom. “This was not a domestic cat,” she wrote.
Is this the Maleny Beast? “It was much louder and deeper and sounded like a member of the big cat family. We got up and tried to see what it was but didn't manage to spot it.” Reports of strange animals in the bush have been part of our society from the times of the First Fleet, with yowies, panthers, mainland thylacines (or Tasmanian tigers), leopards and lions to name a few. Theories abound as to the origins of big cats in the bush … from deliberate releases for hunting (they were called ‘Acclimatisation Societies’), to escapees from travelling circuses, and even the release of mascot animals by American troops after the World War II. The truth is out there …

Peachester protects pink winged moth The Friends of Cahill’s Scrub bushcare group in Peachester have been successful in securing extra funding to help protect a threatened species of moth, found only in five locations in South East Queensland and northern New South Wales. Reminiscent of efforts to save the endangered Richmond Birdwing Butterfly, the caterpillars of the Pink Underwing Moth only eat one species of vine, and the project aims to enhancing the growth of this vine within Cahill Scrub reserve, which is located between Harold Place and Macdonalds Road at Peachester. This means that the protection of this vine – called Carronia Vine – is vitally important for the future survival of the Pink Underwing Moth. With one of the only recorded breeding population of the moth in Australia being not far away from Cahill’s Scrub, at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve, having a healthy population of the vine in the Peachester environmental reserve gives the survival of the moth a significant boost. The large and colourful moths can have a wingspan up to 17cm. The caterpillars are equally impressive. When disturbed they bend forward, stretching their skin to reveal what appears to be a pair of large, blue-black eyes and a double row of white teeth-like markings to deter would-be predators. Interestingly, once the vine climbs up higher than shrub level, it becomes less attractive to the moth. Part of the project funding will go towards assessing the best ways to promote the vines to grow lower to the ground. The Friends of Cahill’s Scrub group applied to receive a grant of $3,340 through Healthy
Conor Jenkins (Sunshine Coast Council), Rhys Meyers (Friends of Cahill’s Scrub), Bruce Lord (Healthy Waterways and Catchments) and Ted Prickett (Friends of Cahill’s Scrub) with the Carronia Vine Waterways and Catchments (formerly SEQCatchments) with funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program to help protect and conserve Matters of Environmental Significance. Sunshine Coast Council, have also come to the party with over $3,000 in extra support above and beyond their usual help for the bushcare group. The Friends of Cahill’s Scrub are a group of locals who volunteer their time to undertake conservation works in Cahill Scrub. Cahill Scrub is an exceptional large remnant of lowland subtropical rainforest along Landon Creek, providing habitat for a number of significant species of plants and animals. The group are always looking for people who have some spare time to help out. Anyone interested can contact Ted on 5494 9061 or email pumpkintimers@iinet.net.au

Ana said: “Kerry is a great story teller and holds a wealth of information about Aboriginal culture in this area.” They were also joined by local elders Uncle Alan and Aunty Edna as well as volunteers from Glass House Mountains and Caloundra Visitor Information Centres, Sunshine Coast Reconciliation Group, Celebrate Glasshouse Country and other community groups. “We visited the Glass House Mountains Bora Ring, the Landsborough Grinding Grooves and Mary Cairncross park where Kerry shared the Gubbi Gubbi story of the mountains,” Ana said.

Petition to make Maleny-Montville turnoff safer It was the last straw for Maleny local Rachel Fentiman. A recent incident whilst negotiating the MalenyMontville turnoff pushed her over the edge and she decided something had to be done. “I have had a few very near misses on that corner from people not giving way, but the scariest happened just before when a lady turning right into Maleny decided she'd give way by fully blocking the road heading to Landsborough,” she recently posted on Facebook. “The worst part is, after I and the person behind me slammed on our brakes, I tooted my horn in exasperation and she had the gall to throw up her hands. Now I know it's hard to see what's coming when turning right there, but really, who would pull out straight into oncoming traffic? “Who else has had close misses on that intersection? I wonder if we formed a list whether we could approach Council or something? I've never done anything like this before but I'd really like to be constructive.” Rachel kicked a hornets’ nest if the resulting chatter was anything to go by. And it seems that many more locals think the same … something needs to be done to make the intersection safer. But overwhelmingly, one message was that whatever the solution may be, traffic lights are not it. Buoyed by the support, Rachel, with the help of State Member for Glass House Andrew Powell’s office, generated a petition to respectfully request

that Main Roads take heed of the wishes of locals. Main Roads are soon to concrete over the traffic islands at the intersection, in an attempt to improve visibility lines along MalenyLandsborough Road. But many of those commenting via Facebook are asking for a roundabout or turning slip-lanes. If you’d like to add your name to the call for action on the intersection, you can sign Rachel’s petition at Andrew Powell’s office (at the top of Maple Street, Maleny), at Judi Coey Optometry (9 Bunya Street, Maleny) or online – see Andrew’s column on page 29 for details.

Vintage Calendar Girls recruit another celebrity
The man famous for rocking a pair of maracas and judging Australia’s Dancing with the Stars is gearing up to channel his inner Fred Astaire to raise money for Rare Cancers Australia. Todd McKenney has lent his star power to the Vintage Calendar Girls project, which is in its third year of raising awareness and funds for families on the Sunshine Coast who are battling rare cancers. This comes hot off the announcement that Network 10’s The Living Room renovating-for-profit guru Cherie Barber will be one of the 2018 limited edition calendar cover girls. Todd says he had a lot of admiration for the hard work calendar creator Maleny’s Misty Bland had put into the project since its inception. “This will be my first time working with Misty and her organisation,” Todd says. “She contacted me on Facebook a couple of years ago and I read her story about her and her husband Rob and it touched me, especially the way she said she can’t sit back and be a passenger on this. “She wants to actively help and that’s what got my interest.” Maleny mother-of-two Misty was spurred to action after her husband and childhood sweetheart, Rob, was diagnosed with a thoracic chordoma – a cancer that attacks the spine – in early 2014. To buy a copy of the 2017 calendar, featuring AFL legend Barry Hall, or to donate, offer services or equipment for the 2018 calendar project, visit the Vintage Calendar Girls on Facebook, email vintagecalendargirlsqld@gmail. com or call 0451 272 057.
Love old motorbikes? You’re not alone The Historical Motorcycle Club of Queensland has well over 1000 members across the state with approximately 140 members living on the Sunshine Coast. Club motorcycles must be 30 years old, so that includes any bike up until 1986 and some members have bikes ranging back to 1912 and everything in between. The club encourages the restoration and maintenance of historic, vintage and veteran motorcycles. Club activities include social rides, plus show and shines and exhibitions which the general public can enjoy while they remember machines from the past. For the past 24 years the Sunshine Coast branch of the club has held an annual Motorcycle Swap Meet and this year's will be held on the weekend of March 11 and 12 at the Maleny Showgrounds. The gates will open on Saturday at 6.00am for sellers / vendors and then at 8.00am for buyers and the general public. Trading will continue all day until 6.00pm and the meet will reopen again on Sunday morning at 6.00am and will run through until 12.00noon. The club invites anyone to come along to the swap. If you have something to sell and need a swap site, that will cost $5.00 for the weekend. If you want to buy something or just look, then that will cost you $5.00 entry fee. Items for sale are restricted to ‘motorcycle related’, but this provides a very wide cross section, from complete motorcycles, engines, gearboxes, frames, tyres, lots of parts, accessories and riding clothes, to books, photographs and paintings. The club also raises and donates money to charities which include the Queensland Cancer Council, Prostate Cancer and Earthquake Relief. For more information on the day call Allan on 5457 3449 or, if you are interested in joining the club and sharing the love of old motorcycles, they will have a club tent on the day where you can drop in and have a chat.

Calling all darts players The Surfcity Darts Association will be running a weekly darts fixture competition at the Glass House Mountains Sports Club starting on March 6. Association Secretary Dawn Hawkins, from Beerwah, has been a competitive darts player for many years. “It’s a great sport for all ages, men and women,” she says. “It doesn’t cost the earth to join in and the weekly game nights are a great social event too.” Seeing that there are no organised darts fixtures locally, the association decided to approach the Glass House Mountains Sports Club. “They are more than happy for us to hold our darts night at the Club. And we’re wrapped with what the facilities have to offer,” she said. “So now all that’s needed are some local people who would like to come and enjoy a few games of darts each Monday night.” They are calling on anyone interested to nominate for the teams fixtures. You don’t have to be in a team to nominate, as you’ll be matched into a team. The fixtures are for all ages (over 12), men and women and any skill level. Games are held on a Monday night from 7.15pm, and everyone gets five or six games of darts on the night. With registration costs of only $35.00 to join the club for the year, and the game fees being just $6.00 for the night, it is one of the cheapest forms of sport you can find. The Sports Club will have the bar open and food will be available too, so it will be a great all-round social and fun evening. If you’d like more information or to nominate, call Dawn on 0487 850 008 or email surfcitydarts@bigpond.com But hurry, nominations for this competition close on February 27 so that the fixtures can commence on March 6.
Michael Hebiton along with his brother Daniel already owns a successful shed manufacturing company based in Geraldton, Western Australia. Wanting to expand their range of domestic and commercial products, and appeal to a broader local market, they recently decided to become resellers of Transportable Shade Sheds. With a motivated business outlook, the two brothers bought their current commercial shed manufacturing business in 2012 with proceeds from the sale of their family farm. Michael had previously worked at the company for four years and when the longstanding business came up for sale he and his brother decided to go into partnership. Like Transportable Shade Sheds, the business they purchased had been well established for a number of years giving them an additional competitive advantage as customers traditionally respond with confidence to business / products that have stood the test of time. Situated in the Midwest region of Western Australia, which has a large farming and agricultural base, the manufacturing of commercial and large domestic sheds is potentially an extremely viable business. Realising a gap in the market for providing more cost effective domestic products, and wanting to offer their commercial clients more diversity, at the beginning of the year Michael and Daniel signed up with Transportable Shade Shed/Saver6.com small business collaboration. They are now able to offer additional products under the banner of their current shed manufacturing business as well as enjoying access to a comprehensive range of additional online marketing and social media support which will serve to further extend the sales reach and new business opportunities for their venture. “Transportable Shade Sheds is a great way for us to get in the door with the local domestic market. Their range of products also fit in well with what our existing commercial clients need such as dangerous goods storage and animal shelters,” explained Michael. Through the cloud based mentoring and marketing support of Saver6.com, Michael and Daniel now have access to online marketing tools that they had previously not had time to explore. While they can concentrate on growing their expanded business, Saver6.com works behind the scenes to assist in website creation, social media marketing and business mentoring support which enhances the visibility and viability of their business … a great win-win situation. Becoming resellers of Transportable Shade Sheds has provided a very straight forward business opportunity for the brothers which fits in excellently with their current business model and ultimately will allow customers a more comprehensive range of shed and shade coverage. While commercial sized sheds will continue to be manufactured and erected, this process is understandably lengthy with considerations for approvals, design and manufacturing taking time. One of the key advantages of Transportable Shade Sheds is that while highly durable, they are quick and easy to install. As highly adaptable products that don’t require council approval, for many customers a product that can be installed within a day is very appealing. If you know someone looking for a Transportable Shade Shed around the Geraldton area please contact Michael from Carimor Sheds on 0428 469 333. If you would like to find out more about opportunities in your area or are keen to be your own boss – or look at business options that may work well with your current industry then contact the team at Transportable Shade Sheds on 1300 667 433 or Saver6.com on 1300 918 771.
Please call Michael Hebiton, a Saver6.com member and a Transportable Shade Shed specialist. He is available to help you get your Transportable Shade Shed on your property.

Beerwah Writers Group
At our late January meeting, the Group confirmed that the release of the Christmas issue of the ‘Five Minute Tales’ magazine was reviewed favourably and distributed to local newsagents and other outlets. At this meeting our two founder members, Kate Wright and John Wright, were awarded Life Membership, acknowledging their dedication and commitment to the group and its activities. Discussion on the magazine format led to agreement that each issue should have a theme and a short list of useful themes was also agreed upon. John Best has been working on the magazine cover layout for the next magazine. Trevor suggested a title for research purposes. The challenge is to make each story different in particular ways – by a personal approach. New stories: Bob: ‘Love Among the Macadamias’. Back to Jack and Sue, but needs further character development. Joan: Excerpt from ‘Journey Among Grey Nomads’. Excellent description of an event in the desert. Plenty of variety. Martin: More of his insightful writing of Middle Eastern events. John W: ‘Analogue Man’ – alarm clock, computer and all its accessories, morning activities, kitchen appliances, digital world. Wonderful humorous poem. He says it is doggerel! Susan: ‘Mirror, Mirror’. Took up the suggestions from the previous meeting and was well accepted. Kate: First part of 40,000 word story, great character development. Jan: An historical account with some very interesting events about the nackeroos (coastguard?) during the war. Writing activity for February 10 – ‘Near death experiences’ – 2000 maximum words. The next meeting will be on February 10 at 10.00am at Beerwah Library.

World Day of Prayer
This year’s World Day of Prayer will be held on Friday, March 3, with the order of service being compiled by the World Day of Prayer Committee in the Philippines. This year the theme of the service is ‘Am I being unfair to you?’ A combined service at 9.30am will be hosted on the day at churches representing the Glasshouse, Maleny and Montville districts. Maleny Co-ordinator Dell Somerville said that the event was a great way to come together as well as providing an insight into learning about different countries. “It is a wonderful exercise in ecumenical relations to get everybody together in one theme of prayer” said Dell. The World Day of Prayer is an international ecumenical Christian laywomen’s initiative. It is run under the motto ‘Informed Prayer and Prayerful Action’, and is celebrated on the first Friday in March in over 170 countries. The movement aims to bring together women of various races, cultures and traditions in a yearly common Day of Prayer, as well as in closer fellowship, understanding and action throughout
the year. The Anglican Community Beerwah will be hosting the event at the Mary Mackillop Centre, Peachester Road, Beerwah followed by morning tea. In Maleny the Anglican Church on Walkers Drive will be hosting the service and it will also begin at 9.30am with refreshments to follow, and in Montville, the service will be held at the Uniting Church on Main Street. Maleny housing stress survey Housing stress is a real issue in our Hinterland communities. It may not appear so on the surface, but many are struggling to have a place to call home and some have even been pushed to living in their cars and others are sleeping rough. CHASM (Compassionate Housing Affordability Solutions Maleny) is a community group who are well aware of these issues and who are working to increase the supply of affordable housing in Maleny and surrounding districts. “Rising housing costs, increased rentals,

underemployment and increasing living costs are all adding to housing stress in Maleny,” said CHASM spokesperson Julia Peddie. “It is becoming more and more difficult for people to find accommodation that is affordable and this is causing people to leave Maleny or worse to become homeless.” In an effort to address this issue, CHASM is seeking information about people experiencing housing stress. This includes rental and mortgage stress, those who are being priced out of the rental market and those who are couch surfing, living in a vehicle, camping or living rough. CHASM will use the data collected from this questionnaire to gain a clear understanding regarding the amount of people experiencing housing stress and to develop local strategies to increase the supply and range of affordable housing options. Marvellous Myrtles With Spencer and Karen Shaw One family of plants dominates the Australian landscape and this is the Myrtle Family – Myrtaceae. In the sclerophyll (hard leaf) forests there are Gum Trees – Eucalypts and Corymbia, Angophora, Box – Lophostemon, Turpentine – Syncarpia, Paperbark / Bottlebrushes – Melaleuca and they are often the dominant if not only canopy trees. In our heathlands there are a diverse range of Myrtles including more Bottlebrushes – Melaleuca, Ti-tree – Leptospermum, Twiggy Myrtles – Sannantha and so many more less familiar plants. In our local rainforests, we have the Lillypillys – Syzygium and Acmena species and many more Myrtles that although often uncommon are great garden plants. Great local Myrtles for your garden include: Midyim – Austromyrtus dulcis, a low growing weeping shrub to 1m, with delicate foliage and masses of white flowers and small but tasty fruit. Scrub Cherry – Syzygium australe, a great hedging shrub to 3-4m through to forest tree of 20m depending on the form, includes Aussie compact, Elite, Resilience, Hinterland Gold. Lemon Scented Myrtle – Backhousia citriodora, a must have for most culinary gardens with a great lemon scented foliage used in food and beverages. In cultivation 3-6 metres, but can be a tall forest tree. Cliff Bottle Brush – Melaleuca comboynensis a beautiful red flowered bottlebrush to 2m. These are just a few of the great range of plants in the Myrtle family we have in stock.
Environment Bushland working bee
The Coochin Creek Bushland Group will be having their first working bee for the year on Tuesday, February 21 starting at 7.00am and ending at 10:30am. We plan to start the new year with targeted weeding in the areas we have planted and when it gets too hot, move into the reserve where we plan to collect rubbish, tidy up, and remove any very invasive weeds we come across. Beerwah has a surprisingly beautiful reserve stretching along Coochin Creek from Caralan Park near the Resource and Recovery Centre, all the way to the Beerwah High School. Anybody wishing to get to know the Reserve, and to participate in the work we do, is welcome to join us. All equipment required is supplied and tea is also provided. Wear good sun protective clothing and footwear suitable for hiking in the bush. We meet at the Caralan Park Gate. Take Roberts Road and about 300m from the Resource and Recovery Centre turn into Caralan Way. Thirty metres further turn right into Emma Place.

with Sue Tanner Yay! It’s raining, no it’s not, yes it is – actually it has rained for a couple of hours and you can almost hear the gardens making slurping noises. The rainforest is also looking very dry with a lot of leaf fall, but many birds are still cheerfully calling. The guides have been busy with the first school excursions of the year as well as some adult groups recently. If you have driven by the reserve lately you will have seen that the new building is almost complete. It is a truly beautiful building with stunning timber work and natural rock walls. The huge windows provide loads of natural light and the raised walkway takes you into the forest. All this was achieved without changing or damaging the original track. Even the giant worms uncovered in construction have been relocated. The volunteers will be having orientation days in the Discovery Centre at the end of the month to learn about all the bells and whistles, with the opening planned for March. A large part of the funds raised by the Friends comes from the sale of souvenir items and we are looking at some exciting options for the new retail space. We are interested in hearing from local craft people who have items they think may be suitable. Our first meeting of the year will be at 10.00am in the new meeting room at the centre on Saturday, February 25. We’d love to meet you there. The Friends of Mary Cairncross Association aims to protect and enhance the natural environment of the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. Living - History Peachester’s Community Church
Contributed by Helen Page As from January this year, the Uniting Church at Peachester will be known as the Peachester Community Church. Management and maintenance of the church building is being transferred to the Peachester Community Hall Inc, however Uniting Church services and activities will continue as usual, as will the fifth Sunday ecumenical services. The Hall Committee is grateful to the local Uniting Church Council and to Pastor Margaret Niethe for understanding the importance of this little church to the community for more than ninety years. Hall Committee members are pleased to take on the role of caring for the building, to ensure that Peachester maintains a church as part of our community centre. The church has an interesting history which starts with families of the Methodist faith worshipping in the School of Arts. Then in 1922, permission was granted to build a church: The Daily Mail, Wednesday, 2 August, 1922 “NEWS FROM THE COUNTRY – BUDERIM. At the quarterly meeting of the Landsborough Methodist Circuit, it was decided to grant permission to the Peachester parishioners to erect a church in that locality. After the routine business had been completed the chairman (Rev. Thos. Bainbridge) was presented with a substantial cheque.” The Hendren family gave a block of land beside the hall, and William Andrew Grigor donated the timber. The title deed shows that the Trustees in 1924 were a Who’s Who of well-known Peachester names: John Simpson Jnr, Daniel Kendall Cahill, William Andrew Grigor, Walter Walker, William Vieritz, Kenneth William Hendren and James Denny.
Newspaper reports reveal important dates and achievements, with the continuing theme of working for the church and the community. The Brisbane Courier reported on 8 September 1922 that a stump-capping ceremony had taken place, then on 16 December 1922 the exciting news that the church had been opened. “PEACHESTER: Church Bazaar. A successful Bazaar was held in the School of Arts on Saturday in aid of the new Methodist Church. The proceeds amounted to about £42. Methodist Church. The new Methodist Church was opened on Sunday almost free of debt. The Rev. Mr. Murray, of King's College, preached the opening sermon, and the Rev. T. Bainbridge preached at night. Miss F. Vieritz presided at the organ.” And so it continues through the years – church events, dances, concerts, weddings, funerals, picnics and sports. One of the most outstanding achievements was the popular Sunday School shown in the photo. During the 1940s and 50s local families of all denominations attended, with classes held in the church and the hall, taught by a team of dedicated parishioners. From 1977 the life of the church continued under a different name when the Methodist Church joined with the Presbyterian and Congregational Churches to form the Uniting Church of Australia. A Service Of Celebration will be held on Sunday, February 19 to mark the beginning of a new chapter in the church’s story, and an open invitation is extended to the community to share in this special occasion. The service will commence at 2.00pm, and will be followed by afternoon tea and time for fellowship next door in the hall.

2017 Student Council
Contributed by Shelly Lenz Year 6 students recently put themselves forward for School Captains and Sports House Leaders. Potential students prepared and presented speeches to their peers, teachers and parents within the school. After all their fantastic work and confident speeches that used inspiration, humour, goals, wishes and promises, the candidates had to wait anxiously as the other students voted for who they thought would be great leaders for their school. After all the votes were counted six candidates were chosen to have interviews with the principal and teachers for the requested positions. This year the school has chosen to have four School Captains consisting of two boys and two girls. The successful students for these positions were: Maddy Lencz and Alyssa Hayman for the girls and Cooper Hackney and Oliver Gassner for the boys.
This year also sees the introduction of an Arts Captain and this was given to Anna-Grace Scott. Well done to you on the new position. The Sports Captain winners were: Rungert Tamsyn Douglas and Hollin Fish, Westaway Katie Pettingill and Niamh Red, Maddock - Myth Lenord and Tate Hume. Well done to all the candidates for their huge effort and congratulations to the chosen leaders for Mooloolah State School 2017. I am sure you will do us all proud.
Peachester School Leaders Contributed by Sally Joyce Peachester School Captains and Year 6 students were last week presented with their leadership and senior badges. Year 8 camp adventure Middle School at Glasshouse Christian College begins with ‘Launchpad’ days for each year level. This is when the students go to Tunnel Ridge Ranch for the day and complete team building exercises which not only break down barriers but are a lot of fun. Year 8 did things a little differently this year and went on a camp which was like Launchpad, but on steroids! The students travelled to Teen Mission Camp in Cooroibah for three days where they completed activities like raft building, orienteering, low ropes, archery and a task called ‘Mission Possible’. Mr Matthew Ware is the Year 8 Coordinator and he was thrilled with how the students helped each other out during team challenges and pushed through some of the more difficult activities. “The goal was for students to develop a sense of place, personal and social competence by creating self-awareness,” he said. “One challenge was the orienteering and camping out in the bush. “I am happy to report that all students lasted the night and even though they were tired, there were smiles all round,” he added. The Teen Mission camp instructors spoke highly of the students and were impressed with the level of encouragement and support students gave each other.

You Said It Reply to John Andrews of Maleny (GC&M News, Feb 8)
Unfortunately, Mr Andrews has not been particularly clear in why protesting doesn’t prove anything. With respect, I must add that the term Aborigines is also offensive in this context. An excellent opinion nonetheless, but let us get to the root of the issue. It has been a common occurrence every year that protests have risen because of Australia Day. To this we must ask, why is Australia Day of such concern to Indigenous Australia? 1788 marked the arrival of the First Fleet. A British “colonisation” based on terra nullius or no-man’s land. Actually, it was someone’s land. Evidence suggests that the Australian Aboriginal people have the longest surviving culture on the planet. For an unknown to suddenly arrive and declare this land their own is terribly inconsiderate and invasive. Aboriginal people were determined as un-civilised and subject to racial discrimination and prejudice based on the predominant Social-Darwinism of that time. Think about a stranger who walks onto your front yard and says: “This is now mine because I do not rate you as civilised.” How would you feel or react? There is much more to add to this discussion, and I urge anyone who has any prejudicial thinking towards Indigenous Australia to visit a community such as Cherbourg. The wonderful people of that town can teach you a lot. James Williamson Landsborough
Maleny Bowls Club seeks treasurer
The Maleny bowls Club, 80 years old this year is looking for help. Thanks to a great social bowls program we are enjoying a resurgence of activity and interest at our club, and our volunteers are working very hard to ensure our survival. Is there a retired bookkeeper or similarly qualified person out there who could help with our books? We have a modest budget to spend on a bookkeeper and would sincerely appreciate the help and guidance necessary to maintain the integrity of our accounts. Please contact the Secretary, John Lewis, on 5494 3745 or 0427 416 205. Warrick Moodie Maleny Bowls Club

Re: 'Another great Christmas Tree Festival'
The Maleny Guides are partnering with the Canadian Guides through the connection I set up in 2016 between them and my granddaughters' group, the 155th in Transcona, a suburb in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. (Once a Girl Guide, always one)! An exchange of hand written letters and gifts has taken place between the groups previously during my trip in June for a family event, but then on the recent December trip (first time for me to have Christmas with family in 15 years) the Maleny Guides gave me another gift package which included green and gold decorated Styrofoam balls (similar to the ones on the tree that they massed in red and white as part of the Christmas Tree Festival). I was able to deliver this to their last 2016 meeting, so the Canadian Guides were delighted. Angie Mulgrew Maleny
Violence bail reform
The LNP believes in tougher bail principles which rebalance the scales of justice in favour of victims not criminals. We believe that for violent offenders, bail should be considered a privilege and not a right. We also believe that the system needs to protect victims and the community. All Queenslanders would have been disgusted to learn the man who brutally murdered his former partner on the Gold Coast recently had been released on bail despite strong protests from police. This mother-of-four was just the latest victim to die at the hands of their partner or former partner. Enough is enough. The LNP will introduce urgent legislation into State Parliament to amend bail laws and reverse the onus of proof for domestic violence matters. Annastacia Palaszczuk says she will review bail laws, but we know what happens when Labor reviews. They hold reports back, let them gather dust in George Street and, worst of all, they never act. We don't need another review to tell us the system has failed yet another victim. The time for talking is over – Queenslanders are demanding action.
If Annastacia Palaszczuk doesn’t deliver these important reforms and do her job, the LNP will. Andrew Powell MP Member for Glass House
Glass House Hall AGM
It is that time of year again to have our AGM meeting. As most of you are aware we have a very nice and adequate Community Hall in the township of Glass House Mountains for which we lack support from the local and surrounding community. 2016 saw the 100 year Centenary celebrations of the Hall. The committee put a lot of hard work in the celebrations which were very successful. We would like to extend an invitation to attend our up and coming Annual General Meeting to be held on Sunday, February 26 at 4.00pm at the Hall at Coonowrin Road, Glass House Mountains. We need some younger mature people to join our committee. It requires a bit of volunteer work around the Hall and attendance at our monthly meetings on the fourth Sunday of each month at 4.00pm. This facility is for the public, you and me, to use. We look forward to your support in the future. April Anderson Secretary
Difference of opinion
Having been a volunteer with the Peachester Rural Fire Brigade for 30 years I am now in the situation that the current management committee are considering terminating my brigade membership. I believe that the reason for this is because my opinion of the QFES officers, local and Brisbane, differs from theirs. This is to let my neighbours and the Peachester Community know, that I am not resigning. What happens will happen, but I will be here, if needed, with my trusty Fordson Major and a full tank of water, as I was in the 1994 fires, and on other occasions. As another Brigade member who recently resigned said, “Volunteering is time willingly given for the common good of the community." Bart Geeson Peachester

Previewing 2017 : How’s the landscape for real estate buyers? The market for housing in Australia is always an active one. This is never going to change, as people will obviously always need places to live. Prices are always subject to ebbs and flows, however, as levels of supply and demand fluctuate and the market adjusts accordingly. With this in mind, it’s interesting to think about how the market might look in 2017. What factors will influence the health of the market? You’ve got questions; we’ll try to provide some answers. If you’re thinking 2017 will be the year that you get in touch with a mortgage broker and begin to discuss making a deal to purchase real estate, you’re in luck. A glance at the market expectations for 18

FEBRUARY 15 2017
this year reveals that plenty of different types of housing will be on the market and affordable. For example, according to RealEstate. com.au, there’s been a recent trend of overdevelopment in the central business districts of major Australian cities such as Melbourne and Brisbane. This has a way of pushing prices down so that buyers can afford them when they might not otherwise. Having said that, if you’re not currently looking for an extravagant place in a glamorous market, there will also be a trickle-down effect causing prices to decrease in places that were already more affordable. For example, suburban
locales in areas like Tasmania and New South Wales may soon have cheaper real estate options. The bottom line is that no matter your price range, there’s probably something out there for you. For those looking to secure property investment loans and make a purchase soon, it’s also worthwhile to consider how the government might affect the existing market forces. For instance, Campaign Track noted that interest rates are lower now than they’ve been in 60 years, which should encourage people to make deals now while they can get maximum value. In past years, there’s been a bit of a stalemate in Australian real estate, with buyers sitting back and waiting despite the
favourable market. This trend might break in 2017, as everyone realises it’s time to make a move. We may see sales start to pick up before you know it. Whether you’re looking for short-term help, or more of a big-picture view, Call Teresa Harrison today for expert advice

My number one question from people is: How did you get into acupuncture?
My answer is my own health. I was studying Naturopathy, working at Beerwah’s local health food store, all was good – then I started menopause at 43. I couldn’t believe what was happening to my body and my mind, I was told by my GP and gynecologist that removing my precious uterus was the only way – the organ I was born with, that had brought forward my children was to be ripped out, end of story. Anyway I had a wonderful yoga teacher and friend who just happened to be an Acupuncturist and Herbalist who told me there was another way (HOPE). He told me if I came for daily treatment, and took his herbs, we could avoid surgery. What did I have to lose? Money and time, but I would save my precious uterus, and I did! Eight days in, my profuse bleeding ended never to return, and the power surges eased. The following week I returned to university, withdrew from my studies and transferred my degree to Acupuncture! So my journey continues with my continual learning with my Japanese Sensei and my wonderful clients, who teach me so much about this amazing medicine. At Soulqi we care about you and your health, so give us a call on 5439 0094 or book online at www.soulqi.com.au, or just pop in to 5/68 Simpson Street, Beerwah.

Out & About Agro comes to town Last Wednesday the Glasshouse Women’s Social Group that meets twice a month at the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre had a visit from one smooth talker and a strong silent furry fella. Jamie Dunn and his long time side kick Agro popped into the group to meet the ladies and share some of their stories. Jamie described himself as someone that "used to be someone" and while his public profile is no longer where it was a couple of decades ago, he hasn’t lost his ability to share a yarn, to be a little bit cheeky or to share a laugh at his own expense. The ladies in the audience appreciated that he took the time to come and share his stories and to pose for plenty of selfies.

Things To Do Outspoken
Design history
We open Outspoken’s 2017 program with a conversation with the remarkable Scottish author Malachy Tallack. Malachy is from the Shetland Isles, as far north in Scotland as you can go. He attracted a lot of attention with his first book, ‘60 Degrees North’, an account of his journey around the world along the line of the 60th latitude. It was a book that Robert MacFarlane described as a brave and beautiful, chosen by BBC Radio 4 as Book of the Week. He’s in Australia to promote his new work, ‘The Un-Discovered Islands’, a study on islands of imagination, deception and human error. He’s also a well-known singer songwriter with four albums to his name. He’ll be in conversation with Steven Lang. For more information and tickets, visit www. outspokenmaleny.com. The event is on March 1 at Maleny Community Centre at 6.00 for 6.30pm. Tickets are $20.
Delve into the history of style and design at Maleny Library on Monday, February 20, from 2.00pm to 3.30pm. Join retired professor of Design History, Gillian Davies, in a guided tour of style and design across the ages. Explore snapshots of design history and understand what defines them. Discover aspects of style that link pieces of furniture and architectural design to particular periods. Learn how to identify examples of design in everyday objects and surroundings. Attendance is free, however bookings are essential. Phone 5475 8989.

So far a compilation album, live performances, a website and Facebook page have raised money for BeyondBlue and started essential conversations in the community. Together with Maleny Apex ‘Above the Blue’ has already raised more than $10,000. Dicko will be joined on Saturday, February 25 by Col, Richo, Kelly Cork, Tom Richter, Andrew Laidlaw Jones and Nellie Finley, to try and raise even more. And in an exciting twist, the community gets a say in the set list. By visiting the ‘Above the Blue’ Facebook page fans can vote to hear some current hits and old favourites ‘twanged up’ in a super-group show-stopping jam. Proceeds from the sale of the ‘Above the Blue’ album will continue to go to BeyondBlue. Money raised from the gig on February 25 will be donated to Apex Maleny to be used in the local community. Tom Richter’s ‘Some Brighter Day’ from the ‘Above the Blue’ album is on radio now via PlayMPE.

Sweets on Maple, Maleny’s Old Fashioned Lolly Shop, is a fun business to own and work in. Shelley started the business in 2007 and enjoys working in the shop, being creative with the fudge recipes and, best of all, displaying the new stock, especially at Christmas. Sweets on Maple’s friendly staff give customers a whole shopping experience, with tastes of fudge, nostalgia in finding their childhood favourites, and free gift wrapping or gift bags. In this business, the customer is usually happy when they come in and always even happier when they walk out the door! If you’d like to be the next happy owner of this highly successful business, contact Jess Luthje at Maleny Realty on 0438 616 064 for more information.

State Government is not listening
The REIQ is disappointed in the recent announcement by the State Treasurer that the Government would not broaden the first home buyer grant to include established homes. REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella said the Government was not listening to the needs of regional Queenslanders. “We always welcome measures that help first home buyers get into the market,” she said. “However, our concern is for the long-term impact and the bigger picture in regional Queensland, where new construction is exacerbating the oversupply issues that these markets are facing. “House values are falling, with some markets as much as 30% below levels five years ago. Continuously adding supply of housing to oversupplied markets is irresponsible and will slow down any future recovery. “A recent CoreLogic report into affordability identified that regional Queensland’s housing affordability was nearing similar levels to Melbourne. Wages are flat or are going backwards, the cost of living is higher and it’s harder to save for a deposit. “The Government should offer first-home buyers the choice between new builds or established homes. Bring buyers to the market where there is ample supply – don’t keep adding to the supply."

Do you have it? I often mention the importance of Landlord Protection Insurance as it provides peace of mind in the event of the unexpected. This insurance covers for loss of rent, property damage and lots more. Each insurance provider has different policies and terms, as well as different levels of cover for different circumstances. It is important to know what your insurance policy covers you for.
Often the insurance that banks offer do not have the same cover as specialised Landlord Protection Insurance providers – so don’t get caught.

In the Garden with Brownie
Who’s been sleeping in my bed?
I took this photo of one of my resident brush tailed possums trying out a new kookaburra nesting box I’d had installed at my home. It didn’t seem to worry it that half it’s back hung out the front. But I do wish that it would occupy the nice big possum box which is on the tree next to it rather than camp in something meant for another one of my backyard residents. According to Alan Franks from Hollow Log Homes, there are 87 species of birds, 35 species of reptiles and 55 species of mammals across South Eastern Australia that will utilise tree cavities for shelter and/or nesting. Each of these, although having different habits and requirements, can be catered for using a variety of box sizes and entrance holes and placement variations. And some species make use of multiple tree hollows, meaning that more hollows are needed than there are animals needing them. For example, a family of sugar gliders will use five or so hollows within their home range. Alan suggests that when planning a wildlife box program on your property, to work on a starting figure of 10 boxes per hectare, with the mix and quantity of boxes depending very much on the habitat and food source. The majority of boxes will be for the smaller animals in keeping with the natural balance of hollow formation – something along these lines: a ratio of two larger boxes if suitable habitat is present (owl/kookaburra/cockatoo), 2–4 medium boxes (duck/possum), 4-6 smaller boxes (small parrot/micro bat/forest bird/small glider). But sometimes – as I’ve found – the animals have other ideas and choose wherever they want to sleep … which is okay by me, as long as they stay away from the shed and the house roof cavity. If you’d like to help out your backyard wildlife with nesting boxes, check out the Hollow Log Homes website www.hollowloghomes.com or give Alan and Stacey a call on 5472 3142.
From your gardens I love to get emails from readers showing me their pride and joy plants … or just something unusual or interesting. Patricia Gundrum from Glass House sent me six lovely photos of the colourful displays in people’s front gardens, and all of which she says are within a 500m walk along Coonowrin Road. Thanks Patricia … it’s great that people can share their beautiful plants with anyone who walks along for a look.
Weed File Crofton Weed
It’s not only exotic diseases like Hendra that horse owners need to watch out for, some local weeds can be just as dangerous for horses. Crofton Weed is a serious problem if eaten, causing a condition called Tallebudgera Disease. This condition can cause the death of a horse from acute pulmonary consolidation of the lungs. The weed grows to about a metre tall, and has large trowel-shaped leaves with toothed edges. It produces dense heads of white clustered flowers in August and September at the ends of the soft stems. Crofton Weed prefers to grow in moister conditions, like along creeks and shaded forest edges.
And Rosemary Halstead sent in this photo of a hybrid Cassia fistula ‘Rainbow Showers’ flowering its head off in their Landsborough garden. What a beauty, Rosemary – and apart from a gorgeous flower show, the hybrid variety of the common ‘Golden Rain Tree’ has the added benefit of having sterile seeds – so no seedlings popping up where you don’t want them.

What a great invitation… Isn’t it funny how we like to be invited to weddings, events, parties, etc? An invitation in some way feeds our social esteem. Sometimes we get upset about not getting invited to an event we had no intention of attending in the first place. We like to have the right of reply. We may decide that we cannot make it to the event on the invitation, but we are sure glad we were at least on the list. So why is all our selfimportance tied up in an invitation? It’s because we like to know our approval rating is still intact. There is a story like this in the Bible, where many people were invited to a wedding feast and everyone had somewhere else to be. Not to be out done, the host of the wedding sent people to the highways and byways and invited anyone to come to the feast. They didn’t have to be wealthy or have 500 people on their Facebook friend list, they were all invited just how they were. The Bible says that God sent His Son to come to the world and issue the entire human race with a “whosoever would come” type invitation into

His family. Some people will not accept the open invitation to spend their eternity in the presence of God. However they will at some point wish they had. I encourage you to accept this open invitation to respond to God and invite Him to not just be a part of your life but to be the source of your life. “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become God's children, to those who believe in His name.” John1:12 Prayer: God thank you for the open invitation to receive your Son Jesus Christ. Help me to understand what it means to trust you with my life. Lead me to those people who can help me fully discover who you are. In Jesus’ name, Amen. Find yourself, in Church this weekend. CMY

Sport Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Ian Hansen Once again Tuesday’s afternoon Bowls were a non-event with only four members present. Wednesday’s Twilight Challenge Winning Teams were: Bridge Club, Handles, The Grove, Amigos, Ben Bryce, Ezi Riders, Muskateers and Sunstone. The lucky Draw Winners were: Lead - Neil Stenhouse, Second - Steve Porter and Skip - Ian Tuddenham. The Touchers went to Margaret Ginns, Brad Williams and Pam Nott. The Money Board winner was Carol Cook and the Mystery Prize raffle went to Les Fawkes. Friday there were five rinks of Scroungers and the winners on their respective rinks were: Allan Cook, Ian Chatterton, Margaret Ginns, Relma Godfrey and John Kapetanic. The sole Sponsors’ Prize winner present to claim their winnings was Margaret Ginns who won the Watson's Garage Prize. The Money Board went to one of the two very regular winners, Allan Cook. I notice wife, Carol, was also a winner of this on Wednesday evening. This week there will be Jackpot Pairs/Triples (perhaps depending on numbers), Twilight Challenge Wednesday evening and Scroungers Friday afternoon. Upcoming events include the Monthly Jackpot Pairs Monday, February 27 and the Club Championships are in the near future. Finally, the AGM, initially set down for Saturday, February 25 has been deferred until Saturday, April 1 at 2.00pm.
The Range Croquet Club Maleny After the holiday break, last week was our busiest for some time. Frances Harper, Robert Elliot and Helen Andrews (welcome back) found time for a short game which Frances won 5 hoops to Helen and Robert 3. Tuesday saw the monthly visit of our friends from Blackall Range Care Group, with Vince and Val Carbery, Sally Adams, Priscilla Vickers, Donna Manning, Kath Smith, Sarah Widin, Neil Lovett and Helen on hand to greet the visitors. Eight of the party tried their mallet skills, with guidance from Sarah, Kath and Neil. On Thursday in the morning a group of caravaners, The Fun Rovers, paid us their first visit, greeted by most of our Tuesday team, plus Gail Denver, Wallace Roy and Frances. All had a chance to try their luck with the mallet, and enjoyed themselves so much that they intend returning later in the year. Then, in the afternoon, Ted Gardner joined Vince, Sarah, Wallace, Frances and Neil in dethatching and mowing Lawn 2. We slept well that night. For information about joining, coaching, playing times or bookings ring Vince Carbery on 5494 2193 or Priscilla Vickers on 5494 3555.

Strongman still powering on Veteran Beerburrum strongman Tim O'Shea won the Brisbane Strongman Series Round 1 on Saturday, proving there's still some fight in him as he nears his 39th birthday. With 43 athletes competing in the event, Tim had to lift logs and axles, drag chains and carry barrels on the way to winning the top division. "I was pleased the final event was my favoured stone lift, and was only required to load the
145kg stone twice to ensure the win," Tim said. After the event Tim was pleased to see the progression of the sport. "Five to ten years ago we'd be lucky to have six blokes at an event, now the sports of strongman and strongwoman attract hundreds of people each year, from novices to elite." Round 2 of the Brisbane Strongman Series is scheduled for May 13.

Missing You We’re missing you a little more each time we hear your name, We’ve cried so many tears, Yet our heart’s broken just the same. We miss our times together Things in common we could share, But nothing fills the emptiness Now you’re no longer there. We’ve so many precious memories, To last our whole life through, Each one of them reminds us, Of how much we’re missing you.

Just for Laughs
It Costs No More To Hire A Proven Professional
Assertiveness A mild-mannered man was tired of being bossed around by his wife so he went to a psychiatrist. The psychiatrist said he needed to build his selfesteem, and so gave him a book on assertiveness, which he read on the way home. He had finished the book by the time he reached his house. The man stormed into the house and walked up to his wife. Pointing a finger in her face, he said, "From now on, I want you to know that I am the man of this house, and my word is law! I want you to prepare me a
gourmet meal tonight, and when I'm finished eating my meal, I expect a sumptuous dessert afterward. Then, after dinner, you're going to draw me my bath so I can relax. And when I'm finished with my bath, guess who's going to dress me and comb my hair?" "The funeral director," said his wife.

LEO July 23 - August 22 It might take some effort to keep on track with all your schedules. It is probably because there are so many alternatives. It’s okay to at least keep your options open. You will not need to worry about making quick decisions as most of your decisions will probably work out well for you. Centre activities around your home, sharing with others. VIRGO August 23 - September 22 With Jupiter retrograding now and throughout the coming months in the sign of Libra the emphasis will be on good relationships. By the weekend the sun moves into the Pisces sign for the next month which brings committed relationships and lots of energy your way. A breakfast or café meeting inspires and arouses feelings of joy and enthusiasm. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 There are various patterns at play and some urgent situations call for snap decisions, fast talk, and quick action. As always, you will be up for the challenge, however, careful attention should be paid to personal spending. It’s better spent on some renovation or revitalisation of your apartment or home. A pleasant social outing on the weekend. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 The evenings are showing promise this week and over dinner it may be the right time to take care of something secret that involves a family member or friend. Foundations are being laid for new projects or perhaps better relationships with parents or family. Success comes from focusing attention on community. Don’t force issues now!
SAGITTARIUS November 23 - December 22 This week is a progressive, maybe even ground breaking in some way! With Jupiter in a favourable sign, don’t keep your thoughts to yourself as this is the time, through sharing, you can join forces with others. A change of outlook is coming up for you over the weekend and the key is to get worries out in the open where they can be aired. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 The effects of the last full Moon eclipse in Leo are continuing until the 18th. This means that this week you may be determined to do things your own way. However, since Jupiter is in the partnership sharing sign of Libra you may invite legal action against you if you continue to be overly aggressive when demanding you are right and they are wrong. AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 This week will be a great networking time so take advantage. There is even the possibility that the Golden Goose may show up, right at your door! Maybe you will take a short trip, because there is a need for stimulation in your schedule. Communications are interesting and very lively but be flexible when making plans with friends. PISCES February 20 - March 20 Any project or professional agenda gets stability this week for it future growth. Use your hidden resources to make this a very successful week. This may be because you have secret idea or intuition about something that could work well with quick action. There may be a private supporter involved and now is the time to trust good advice.

Week beginning 15/02/17 ARIES March 21 - April 20 A good suggestion is to listen to the ideas of your spouse, partner, advisor or consultant. Rest assured this could bring proven, balanced and reasonable suggestions. Caution is called for in personal, or partnership financial transactions. This may be because you hear about some private information. Be careful about what you divulge in this area. TAURUS April 21 - May 22 You could achieve some good success which would merit a rise in position for you. This week you should be seen not to shun your responsibilities. There may even be some parental service to family matters as well as solid business decisions in your profession. You might have to deal with a partner’s unpleasant mood over the weekend. GEMINI May 23 - June 23 The planets are sending you extra special energy rays with good aspects to Jupiter and Saturn. Make use of these bountiful, beneficial, advancement aspects. Make your point to those with influence or perhaps to those who are interested, as many will be. You might be surprised what travel connections or publishing can involve now. CANCER June 24 - July 22 This week’s emotional activity may pull you out from the office to your home. You would rather be close to your family and reap the rewards of security within your domestic nest! There is some good fortune around you with an optimistic series of planets saying to you, “build it and they will come”. The weekend involves Piscean friends.
