Hi Everyone...
on the Cover
The final countdown to the federal election is well and truly upon us. By the time I write my next column we might have a new federal government or it could be business as usual. I know that some people get election fatigue really early into the political campaign and they have been “over it” since the first week and are sick of all the coverage we and every other media outlet have provided in the past few weeks. However, we work really hard at giving locals an insight into each of the Fisher candidates so that people can know more than just what the candidates look like, which is basically all you get from the huge number of corflute signs covering our local roadways these days. We have followed our standard approach, ensuring that we are being fair and even handed, offering each of the candidates the same opportunities and allocation of space, irrespective of any advertising purchased! If you haven’t already pre-polled make sure you remember to vote this Saturday. You can check out where all the polling booths are and, importantly, which ones will be hosting a sausage sizzle and cake stall on page 22. Happy voting. Regards,
Minnie Mace will share Indigenous cultural stories at the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre. See story page 3

for the whole family with lots of free activities including an animal nursery, jumping castle, train rides around the campus, dance, music and drama performances, science shows and interactive displays as well as guided tours of the college. See ad page 11.
If you haven’t already voted in the federal election then make sure you head along to a polling booth this Saturday between 8am–6pm. We have included a list of local polling locations that are predominately at local state schools except for Beerwah, Beerburrum, Peachester and Eudlo where you will need to head to the hall and at Witta where all the action will be at the Rec Club. For a full list of booths check out page 22-23. We have also highlighted the locations that will host a ‘democracy’ sausage sizzle, cake stall or other tasty delights.

Cover Story Cultural stories bringing people together By Lea Parkes The theme for this year’s recent National Neighbourhood Centre Week was “bringing people together”, which sums up exactly what the next event at the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre will do. The centre has an open morning planned for Monday, May 20 from 9.30–11.30am with special guest speaker Minnie Mace, who is really keen to share her Indigenous cultural stories with locals. When GC&M News caught up with Minne last week to take her photo for our cover page, she passionately talked about her history in the local area and her involvement with founding the Nungeena Aboriginal Corporation for Women's Business in Glass House Mountains 30 years ago. Community development worker Natasha Odgers said the volunteers at the Neighbourhood Centre had chosen to highlight the mountains as they held a special place in many locals’ lives and there was great interest in the Indigenous significance of the area. “I am sure there will be great interest from locals to attend an Indigenous cultural storytelling session about the Glass House Mountains and we are keen to encourage locals to come along and share in what will be a social and interesting day with the friendly Neighbourhood Centre volunteers and others,” Natasha said.

By Sonia Clark Judy Tomlinson and the team at Celebrate Glasshouse Country are excited to confirm that the hugely successful Beerwah Street Party will be back for 2019. Organisers estimate previous attendance numbers to be around 10,000 people, so this year’s event will be worth marking in your diaries now. Scheduled for Friday, October 18 from 4-8pm, this year’s event will be the third organised under the Celebrate Glasshouse Country banner. Judy, the group’s president, says although the event is billed as the Beerwah Street Party it is an allinclusive community festival that aims to engage local communities, businesses and groups. It also provides a wonderful way to celebrate the entire Glass House region. Judy said that this year they were determined to build on previous events and work smarter to facilitate the best possible community engagement. To achieve this, they have enlisted the highly capable expertise of seasoned event professional Bob Burns. “We are thrilled to have Bob working with us. He has a genuine interest in promoting the wellbeing of the entire Glasshouse Country region and brings an incredible wealth of community event knowledge along with boundless enthusiasm and energy,” Judy said. “By having Bob onboard as the event director, I can turn my focus slightly away from the overall
organisation and towards building community networks to support this event.” Bob Burns is a familiar name around the area and has numerous community-focussed events under his belt. Bob said that his passion for grassroots and community events was first sparked through his involvement as one of the original organisers of the Maleny Folk Festival. “I love helping communities build up these events. Festivals such as the Beerwah Street Party present a wonderful way to bring the community together and build community spirit and pride. Events such as these serve to enrich our social and cultural fabric and I’m excited to be involved,” Bob said. The team at Celebrate Glasshouse Country have been overwhelmed by the positive responses from people and businesses from all over Glasshouse Country. Their vision is to provide a sustainable annual event and they are calling on local sponsors, volunteers, artisan stall holders, food vendors and entertainers to get involved. For more information email events@celebrateGC.com.au or leave a message for Judy on 0408 445 988. For the latest updates follow Celebrate Glasshouse Country on Facebook.

Glasshouse Country & Maleny News
Beerburrum community not giving up Contributed by the Beerburrum Acton Group The following is a response from the Beerburrum Action Group to the article in last week’s GC&M News in which Barro Group general manager (Queensland) Ian Ridoutt gave the company’s perspective on the quarry application rejection. Sunshine Coast Council’s decision to reject the quarry application, as most residents know by now, has been appealed by the Victorian developer Barro Group. The council has lodged its intention to fight the appeal and defend its decision to support the Beerburrum and Sunshine Coast communities. On March 28, division 1 councillor Rick Baberowski and his fellow councillors – with one exception – decided that a quarry in Beerburrum was neither warranted nor welcome. Barro Group’s representatives seem to forget that the Sunshine Coast councillors were elected to office by the various Sunshine Coast communities – NOT the council’s planning staff – and these councillors have demonstrated that they have listened to and acted – rightly – on behalf of their electors. Mr Ridoutt states that "the site of the Burrum quarry is one of the best on the whole of the Sunshine Coast". He is using narrative such as land use zonings, planning instruments, existing legislation, etc. However, what he doesn’t mention is the attractive cost savings that a quarry in this “handy” location would bring to
SHOP 3 28 SIMPSON St bEERwAH
his company but at a devastating cost to the Beerburrum community, for which his company has shown no regard. The Sunshine Coast is currently serviced by ten hard rock quarries with a combined licence to supply 6.65 million tonnes. On a yearly average only 2-3 million tonnes have been needed. As Cr Baberowski argued at the council meeting: “Do we actually need another quarry?” A quarry in our small town, with 160 or more truck movements per day passing the school and small business precinct as well as residents’ homes, would do enormous damage to the current plans being developed by National Parks in conjunction with the council to invest in Beerburrum. Our unique environment and the area’s links to our nation’s heritage will benefit the town itself and the entire Sunshine Coast community as a tourist destination for Australian and international visitors. The construction of a quarry with its resulting truck movements through the town centre will detract, both directly and indirectly from not only Beerburrum but from the entire Sunshine Coast community. In addition, it is anticipated that the already constructed walking tracks through the Glass House Mountains National Park, along with the new trail head currently under construction next

to the school, will encourage even more visitors to historic Beerburrum and the surrounding hinterland, creating a knock-on effect for the entire Sunshine Coast community with the likely additions of accommodation houses, restaurants, shops, etc, resulting in added trade enabling businesses to prosper and expand. This will not occur if our village is turned into a dusty, noisy, smelly haulage route for massive quarry trucks. The Barro company has demonstrated a lack of care and empathy for the wellbeing of our local communities. Additionally, the cost to expand and accommodate the infrastructure that this proposed operation would need is one that ratepayers must necessarily bear.

Hail the Gladiator in Glass House Who said running can’t be a whole lot of fun? Well-known Glass House Mountains local and trail running event organiser Brett Standring from Run Queensland is inviting all locals to Fresca Market and Café to celebrate National Italian Day by being a part of their Roman Empire inspired event on Sunday June 2. “Embrace your inner gladiator and come along to the festival-style event,” Brett said. “In collaboration with the good folk at Fresca Café on Steve Irwin Way at Glass House Mountains, there will be food, games and, of course, The Gladiator run to conquer.” The Gladiator is a trail run for runners of all ages and abilities. Novices can take the VIII kilometre (… that’s Roman numerals for eight) run starting at the Fresca ‘colosseum’, through the ‘Octavian’ forests along Tibrogargan Creek and back – mostly a nice flat run. The more spirited centurion can tackle Goliath, a XV kilometre (… fifteen) run through the forests, along Tibrogargan Creek to where you will be challenged to defeat the colossus that is Goliath (or Wild Horse Mountain). Then it’s a return run to the colosseum to revel in your victory. “We wanted to create an iconic event for the area but one where locals can easily get involved and just have some fun too,” Brett said. “We are so lucky to have such a fantastic venue as Fresca Market and Café, where Kristina and the team are just so welcoming … and they create some of the most amazing Italian delights
you’ll find anywhere on the coast. Plus we can help the Sunshine Coast Italian community celebrate National Italian Day as well. “We’re hoping locals will join in the fun of the day by entering The Gladiator run dressed in Roman attire but it’s not compulsory, so don’t feel you have to,” Brett said. “After the run, there will be events, games and plenty of food available. It will be a fantastic day for all the family, as well as a great social event for groups, clubs, fitness classes or just a bunch of friends.” To enter the run, you need to register by going to www.runqld.com.au/thegladiator - but be quick as registration closes at midnight on May 31. No entries will be accepted on the day. The runs start at 8.30am on Sunday, June 2, with fun events and activities all morning, into lunch and beyond. Run Queensland also hosts the internationally acclaimed Blackall 100 trail run as well as other events locally such as Beerwah @ Daybreak and Beerwah @ Night.

More work on Glass House park The eight hectare Glass House Mountains District Park in its spectacular natural setting was officially opened in March last year. It includes a barbeque shelter, places to sit and rest, picnic areas, a playground, a dog off-leash area, amenities building and viewing areas to overlook lakes and waterways and Mount Tibrogargan. At the time, division 1 councillor Rick Baberowski said this part of the region had an increasing number of young families and was also an important tourist destination. He said the area needed a wonderful mixed space like the park to help showcase the unique natural environment and that he was looking forward to future stages of the project being completed. Just over 12 months later and Sunshine Coast Council has now appointed a contractor to begin preliminary work this week on stages five and six of the project.

Jason Lemberg, Senior landscape architect with Councillor Rick Baberowski looking at the plan for playground extension The work will include new pathways linking the park from Railway Parade through to Dana Close, a nature trail network with signage explaining the natural environment, a park entry node and structure featuring public art. Local families will be pleased to see additional playground equipment including a 3m tower and rope climbing ladder added to the play area. There will be another picnic shelter with picnic table and seats added as well as park seats, and additional landscaping undertaken. It is anticipated that the work will be completed in October.

Community News Information Centre celebrates
The Maleny Visitor Information Centre will celebrate its 25th year as an independent, entirely volunteer-run centre this year on June 28. In 1994, with the support of Maleny Chamber of Commerce, an information outlet was established. Initially it was a small hole in the wall in Maple Street open on the days that volunteers were available for 2-4 hours. The centre developed to keep pace with increasing tourist numbers and the needs of the locals and is now open every day of the year except Christmas Day and Good Friday. Maleny Visitors Information Centre invites its volunteers, both past and present, and their partners to a celebratory afternoon tea at the Maleny Community Centre from 3pm on Friday, June 28. For more information please call the information centre on 5499 9033 or email secretary@westnet.com.au.

Life is better when you sing
By Sonia Clark
Establishing a community choir in Glasshouse Country is an idea that local mum and music teacher Sarah Minns has been considering for some time. In a bid to gauge interest, Sarah recently sought feedback through her local networks and has been heartened by the overwhelmingly positive response to the idea. Having tested the waters, Sarah has now committed to kicking off this exciting new community initiative. With support from the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre, the first gathering will be held on Wednesday, May 22 at 6.30pm. The neighbourhood centre has donated the venue. Sarah believes she is a terrible singer but she says life is generally better when you sing. She is keen to provide a relaxed and accessible way for like-minded locals to come together to enjoy good therapeutic singing. “There is so much research to support the numerous benefits achieved through singing and I’d like this to be a local outlet for community members of all abilities and ages to gather with a common interest – without having to travel too far from home,” Sarah said. She has spent many years teaching music and piano, and for the past few years has been teaching at schools further up the Sunshine Coast. However, she realised she missed working in her local community. “Now that my boys are at uni, I can ditch the school routine and focus on plans to work on projects locally. Having spent the past 13 years living here I know our community could benefit from a musical and social outlet like this and I’d like this group to accessible for everyone - young adults, middle-aged adults and older adults alike. No need to read music and experienced or no experience at all welcome.” The plan is for the group to meet weekly on Wednesday evenings at the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre from 6.30-7.45pm. There will be no cost to participate and a variety of music styles will be explored to suit the group as it evolves. If you’d like to find out more, turn up to the first meeting or email Sarah at minnsy1@tpg.com.au.

Interested in local drama?
Many different arts flourish in the hinterland including locally produced drama. The well received plays ‘Twelve Angry Men’ and ‘Travelling North’ staged by Maleny Players within the past nine months show that live theatre still appeals in the era of screen entertainment. Andrew Wallace, of Maleny Players, said not everyone realised the enjoyment to be had in creating drama, not just being in the audience. “That’s why the Maleny Players are planning a special afternoon on Sunday, June 2, to highlight the rewarding experiences that are available,” Andrew said. The opportunities are not just for actors. Those involved off stage are a vital part of the team in any production and share in a sense of satisfaction. And because there are different kinds of plays, different styles of acting and ability levels can be catered for. As a recreational activity, drama has a lot to offer. It stimulates creativity, requires problem-solving, develops self-confidence and involves social interaction. Other talents people have can often be deployed, such as an interest in visual art, music, writing and video. The information session is for anyone who wants to find out more about drama. It will include discussion about new possibilities for drama activities in Maleny such as workshops, theatre sports, informal performances, new collaborations as well as some fun creative activities.

For the second year in a row, 59 Peachester State School students from years 3-6 joined Jinibara Elder Jason Murphy, Martin Fingland from Geckoes Wildlife and Sunshine Coast Council environmental operations officers for an environmental education workshop at the Annie Hehir Jaxon does some bird spotting Road Environmental Reserve. Environment portfolio councillor Jenny McKay said it was a thrill to have the children at the reserve again learning about creatures of the night, critters in the water, planting trees to grow more habitat and becoming future land managers. “Along with the school, it’s our goal to teach them the tools and techniques of the conservation trade at an early age,” Cr McKay said. “By observing wildlife in its natural environment, learning about the cultural significance of the land and species living here and actively giving back to this reserve, these students now have a personal connection to Harper and Kuljan checking out their natural surroundings. macro-invertebrates “This bond between the students and the reserve will last for years and help them become future ambassadors for the environment and its wildlife,” Cr McKay said. Parent Sally Joyce helps students at the school with their Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program and Enviro Club activities but agreed that bringing the students out of the school grounds helped spark their curiosity and love for the environment. “This was a muddy, hands-on dive into Matthew and Beau plant some the natural ecosystem so close to our native trees on the reserve school,” Sally said. The students took turns assessing macroinvertebrates collected from nearby creeks to determine the health of the water, donned binoculars to learn some bird finding techniques, planted native trees and shrubs, and met nocturnal native animals with the help of Geckoes Wildlife – always a favourite! Beerwah Family Clinic expansion complete! The extension to Beerwah Family Clinic is now complete and the finished results look amazing! Practice manager Jan English said that the response from patients to the newly expanded clinic had been overwhelmingly positive and that everyone was very excited with the look of the new fit out, as well as the opportunity to offer even more treatment space. “We are so pleased that the demand for our practitioners and health services continues to grow. This expansion allows us to enhance our practice’s capability and is part of our ongoing commitment to provide a comprehensive locally based health service to our community,” Jan said. The surgery expansion now includes shop 3 in the shopping centre, located directly opposite the current practice. With more treatment rooms and a beautifully appointed reception area, the additional area has created a space that is both inviting and comfortable for patients.
The practice offers general practice medicine as well as a comprehensive range of health services from acute management to chronic disease management to pre-employment medicals, immunisations and iron infusions. General medical services are bulk billed to all Medicare card holders. The practice is staffed by highly experienced doctors in their respective fields, including four male and three female doctors, alongside a dedicated team of nurses, front desk and administration staff. The practice has the added advantage of weekly visiting allied health professional who will operate from the practice premises at shop 1. Community Groups A great celebration of 50 years
Contributed by Helen Weil The recent 50th anniversary shows for the Sunshine Coast Kennel Club were celebrated in fine style. The weekend saw many visitors attending and taking pleasure in the canine activities, which included a variety of events. A popular one was the ‘meet the puppies’ on Saturday, which saw lots of children in amongst the puppies petting and playing. Flyball was a great success with spectators as well as the competing teams. This, along with the UpDog games on Sunday, saw the teams vying for a newly introduced Pineapple Award. The dryland dog sledding was also a hit with many inquiries from interested spectators. More than 400 dogs competed each day in our traditional conformation dog shows. There were many flashy dogs and their handlers showing themselves off with an old English sheepdog winning Best in Show on two days and a French bulldog on the day in between. All up it was a great weekend and the weather managed to give us three fine days after having so much rain. The club thanks all of its sponsors and appreciates the many generous donations received to enable us to put on this special event. Now we are working on the next 50 years as a successful club!
Neighbour Day brunch
Contributed by Jody Blackburn What a beautiful day it was for the Landsborough Neighbour Day brunch recently with about 80 residents attending, some with their neighbours, to enjoy a morning of relaxing conversations, Holly Ashton and Brendan Barry amazing local musicians, old-fashioned games, hearty brekky burgers and delicious coffee. The brunch was a great opportunity for new locals and long termers of 66 years to connect and share stories of their experiences of Landsborough. New friendships were formed and deeper connections forged between neighbours who might normally just pass each other on the street. It was also fantastic to see a diversity of age groups and backgrounds coming together and interacting, creating a wonderful community atmosphere. A big thank you to all whose contribution and support made it such a great day. Feedback has been so positive that plans are under way to do it all again in August. Keep your eyes peeled for details of the next Neighbour Day event!

Artists reach out
The arts community joined together recently for the opening of the Little Treasures exhibition at Vianta Café Beerwah over fine wine, tapas and beautiful guitar music. This is the second year for Bribie art group Contemporary Art Practices (CAP) to show their small works at the venue. Two of the artists, Susan Rothbrust and Tina Galloway (pictured), are also members of the Maleny based Arts Connect, so Arts Connect president Richard Muldoon officially opened the exhibition. Richard and his wife Cathy along with printer Jack Lowry, who recently had her own exhibition at Vianta, attended. Richard said Arts Connect was all about connecting and promoting the arts community and the group welcomed artists from a wide area as Bribie was not that far away. “We are a not-for-profit organisation run by volunteers and apart from holding the Sculpture on the Edge each year we have a full program of workshops and information available to help artists with their practice,” Richard said. “Members can showcase their work on our website and give contact details or studio open times as well. “We also have a few social nights for new members and they’re great fun,” he said. To find out more about Arts Connect go to their website artsconnect.com.au or take a look at their Facebook page.

Glass House receives plenty of grants
Member for Glass House Andrew Powell is thrilled that round 99 of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund (GCBF) has brought a total of $151,292.14 in grants to the immediate Glass House electorate and more to communities further afield that service the electorate. “This is the first round of grants to be rolled out this year and what a stellar outcome we’ve had here in Glass House,” Mr Powell said. The fund provides one-off grants to Queensland not-for-profit community organisations with revenue sourced from gaming taxes. It distributes about $53 million a year to Queensland communities. “These grants provide money to community organisations that often struggle to raise enough funds to maintain or upgrade their premises through traditional fundraising. The grants also enable them to provide further resources or expand their services to the community,” he said. Successful groups within Glasshouse Country and Maleny were the Blackall Range Woodcrafters Guild $4,475 to purchase an air dryer and saw, Club Glass House $14,363.14 to purchase new equipment, Maleny and District Horse and Pony Club $10,000 to construct an equestrian round yard, Maleny Film Society $800 to print festival flyers, Maleny Neighbourhood Centre Association $9,939 to purchase equipment and upgrade website, Montville Tennis Club $35,000 to resurface courts and upgrade nets and the Maleny Gym $8,250 to put towards design, construction and scheduling plans. Information on how to apply for a GCBF grant is available at www.justice.qld.gov.au/grants or by phoning 1800 633 619 during business hours.

You Said It Upcoming election
I heard someone in the street in Maleny the other day say that they would vote for the Greens. My observations on the Greens candidates for the Senate (at least two of them) is that they are more at home having a latte in a coffee shop in Melbourne with their Gucci handbags and shoes and false nails collecting their $200,000 plus salary and certainly not genuinely interested in the environment unless it fits into that spectrum. One has to wonder what sort of car they drive and where they actually live and do they at least have solar panels, as has been a question asked to many of these so-called environmentalists. It would certainly be interesting to find out the truth. Shane Daly Peachester
Election
Most of us have doubts about the major parties. However, I will vote for the Coalition because I believe they will manage the economy better without sending us broke. I agree with some things the Greens want but they are the biggest danger to Australia, they will break us because they have no idea on costs and don't care. They would put thousands out of work. Labor? Yes some things I like but they promise anything and everything because they have to please the Greens and the unions. Because of that, they will send us broke. I have voted Labor in the past and been a union rep so I know what they are about. Please watch your preferences! If the Greens get enough power, we are gone! Ron Batty Beerburrum
Get real on climate change
I read with a sense of sadness and pity the letter by David Lowry of Conondale (GC&M News, May 8). It seems David has joined the cult of climate change doomsday fanatics and is spreading misinformation. This is very damaging to our young people and causing them anxiety manifested in the fact that they take time off school to protest without the facts on the word of activist teachers and people like David. How about some compassion for them? He is correct that the climate is changing. It has done so for millions of years and will continue to do so for millions more. Mother Nature is a law unto herself. Fact check. 1) Carbon dioxide makes up 0.04% of the Earth’s atmosphere. 2) Of the 0.04%, man contributes 3% - nature contributes the remaining 97%. 3) Of the 3% of the 0.04% Australia contributes 1.3%. Our Chief Scientist Alan Finkel has stated that if Australia completely shut down everything it would make virtually no difference to climate change. The fact that by destroying our economy based on unproven ideologies will not help our children into the future. A vote for Labor or the Greens will destroy Australia. A vote for Liberals is only a marginally better option. That does not alter the fact that we need to become much better stewards of our environment, particularly in the use of non-biodegradable plastics, use of chemical weed killers, husbandry of our land and ocean species, etc. Steve Duggan Mooloolah Valley 18

Greens
Last week one of your contributors used the usual fear tactics to promote the Greens’ Utopia. My main concern with them is their complete lack of understanding of economics and how a stable electrical generation and transmission system works. If we stop using and selling coal how do we pay China for all of the solar panels that we will need. In 20 years we have gone from a self-reliant, cheap and reliable energy system to one of the most expensive systems in the world. South Australia with the most renewable energy in the country is 30% more expensive than we are. Can future generations continue to afford this? As a retired electrician I struggle to understand how the current crop of renewable energy systems can possibly work reliably without a coal or nuclear backup. Are batteries the answer? Probably not. With current known lithium reserves we will struggle to power the hundreds of millions of proposed electric cars plus domestic and commercial backup batteries. Elon Musk’s $100 million battery in SA will power that state’s aluminium smelter for just eight minutes. Wind power could possibly be the answer but wait. During May 9, 2017 at lunch time, on budget day in SA, there was zero wind power for the whole of southern Australia, including SA, Victoria and southern NSW. This lasted for about an hour. These turbines were actually consuming power to operate their pumps and cooling fans This is hardly a reliable source of energy. Australia is roughly the size of mainland USA with a population slightly more than Mexico City. Even our Chief Scientist admits that we make diddlysquat difference to worldwide pollution, so why are the Greens hell-bent on bankrupting us? Derek Browning Glass House Mountains
Attention election candidates
My hometown of Collarenebri is located on the mighty Barwon River and has a river that is not running, mostly dry and one can walk over or across anywhere. I am told the Narran Lakes and Menindee Lakes are dry, so I imagine the Narran, Culgoa and associated rivers are also dry. The Mehi and Namoi, too many to name, are all in dire straits. So what are our federal members doing, other than running around kissing babies and making promises of millions of dollars we really don't have? The bush in Australia is in serious trouble. They have had floods and droughts, cattle and sheep dying willy-nilly, our coat of arms animals suffering something shocking and who cares? Not our politicians.
SEND TO: editorial@gcnews.com.au PO Box 99, Beerwah 4519
I was told last weekend that the stench of dead animals on the Cunningham Highway, even with windows shut and air-conditioning on, was something else. We have that much water that is wasted or allowed to vanish in our north or the Ord River Scheme in the west that I am told can supply the whole of Australia, but we do nothing with it. Pipes can go miles underground, through mountains, hills, etc. Surely Australia should come first when we are in trouble. No one else is coming to our aid, so spend some money here where we live. We rode on the sheep’s back for years, so what about helping them now in their hour of need. Use Australian cement, steel and workers, think of the jobs it can generate. If needs be, build holding dams. A little imagination and away we go. Do something useful and help the farmers, the graziers, the country towns and people who rely on their rivers and water systems in the bush. They do live in Australia too, don't forget them. Brian Stallworthy Glass House Mountains
Much appreciated
A heartfelt thank you to the kind person who discovered my very small but very expensive hearing aid in the IGA car park at Maleny on Wednesday, May 8. Your thoughtful note on the car led us to IGA. I do hope you read this and thus know that your gesture was very sincerely appreciated. Mavis Robb Peachester
Transport a bigger issue
As Peachester becomes more urbanised I would deem that public transport for the people of Peachester is a much more important issue than adding more unmanaged open space. For whatever reason, age, injury, illness, etc, there is a sizeable number of our community residents who are unable to access Beerwah, be it for health, shopping, socialising, even the councillor’s meet and greets. Their independence is very important to these folk. I pledge to shed my negativity when the park proponents pledge to maintain and upkeep the said park and accept responsibility for the safety and wellbeing of park users at no cost to the ratepayers, so more funds may be dedicated to those of our community in need of retaining their independence. The Poddy Dodger Peachester

Fight for Fisher 2019 Question: What is it about you, what you offer and what you stand for that makes you the best election choice for locals living in the hinterland?
Local polling booths
To vote on Saturday, May 18, you will need to go to a polling booth. Listed below are the local polling booths. All are open from 8am and close at 6pm sharp. Conondale is the only booth that is not wheelchair accessible. The booths marked with an asterisk are important as they will have a school P&C sausage sizzle or stall available for voters. So, make sure you bring some money with you and support the local school P&C. Witta Recreational Club will have a full morning tea available. Beerburrum – Beerburrum School of Arts Hall, 7 Anzac Avenue Beerwah – Beerwah Community Hall, 25 Peachester Road Caloundra – CCSA Hall, 1 Nutley Street Conondale – Conondale State School, 1700 Maleny-Kenilworth Road Glass House Mountains – Glass House Mountains State School, 58 Coonowrin Road (NOTE: No polling booth at Glass House Hall) Glenview – Glenview State School, 6 Leeding Road Landsborough* – Landsborough State School, 41 Gympie Street North Maleny* – Maleny State School, 16 Bunya Street Montville* – Montville State School, 149-157 Main Street Mooloolah* – Mooloolah State School, 48 King Road Peachester* – Peachester Hall, 960 Peachester Road Sippy Downs – Siena College, 60 Sippy Downs Drive Witta* – Witta Recreational Club, 351 Witta Road On the way into the polling booth, you will no doubt be offered how to vote cards for the seat of Fisher and for the Senate. These are a guide only – you don’t have to follow them exactly. You can vote number 1 for the candidate of your choice and allocate your preferences to all other candidates in the order you wish, even if it’s not the way your preferred candidate suggests. Remember, people handing out how to vote cards are volunteers, friends and family of the candidates who just want to help. Please show them courtesy. If you feel they have overstepped the mark, let one of the polling booth officials know. After voting you can return the how to vote material back to volunteers or leave the cards at the place specially marked.
Sorry ... we got it wrong
GC&M News would like to apologise to Daniel Parsell of the Australian Labor Party for incorrectly editing part of the text included in the Fight for Fisher pages In last week’s edition (May 8) on page 23. The text that was supplied to us said “If Mr Wallace and Mr O’Brien are returned then the Sunshine Coast may have every one of its state and federal representatives in opposition …”. However during editing, for clarification purposes, we changed the Mr O’Brien to Llew O’Brien in the Wide Bay, instead of Ted O’Brien from Fairfax that Daniel had been referring to. Clearly the confusion was at our end and not Daniel and we are sorry for any misconceptions this may have caused.

One Nation Party
Phone: 0436 457 747 Email: fisher@onenation.com.au Website: www.onenation.org.au/our-team/chris-paterson Facebook: www.facebook.com/patersonforfisher With a lot of promises from the major parties in the hope that they will be elected, the Australian people have a choice to make. Let’s look to the past promises. Did they deliver or blame a different level of government? I have never claimed to have all the experience as all the other career politicians but in my line of work as a tradesman it’s about being resourceful and fixing the problems without blame. The time that career politicians spend blaming and arguing could be time and energy focusing on a solution. Take the climate change debate for example. We have a planet that has been around for 4.5 billion years and we have agreed to do our bit to keep the temperature down. My question to the major parties would be, how can you fix a planet if you can’t fix the homelessness problem and we could add a long list of issues to that. Human life and lifestyle must come first, farmers need water and everybody needs affordable fuel and electricity. One Nation, with the balance of power, is Australia’s hope to get that delivered. I have enjoyed my journey campaigning and loved talking and learning from many of the Fisher residents. I hope to be a new voice on the floor of Parliament for you all. 22

It is hard work and determination and I know this secret is shared by every successful business, farm, sole trader, partnership and company here on the Sunshine Coast and in the hinterland. My priorities for the coast are: 1. Tackle homelessness (1,600 sleeping rough or in their cars every night on the Sunshine Coast). Cure homelessness on the Sunshine Coast allowing a certain proportion of planning permission zones mandated to include this type of accommodation indeed for business purposes so that there is a proportion of accommodation for businesses to operate as well. 2. Tackle 20%-50% youth unemployment by GGST tax reform and removal of all employment taxes. 3. Tackle youth suicide nationally. There are 240 attempted suicides a day, six are successful (please see one and two above). Democracy is the price of freedom and electoral and constitutional reform are key to this election. Electronic voting and genuine tax reform in the form of the GGST (0.5% credit/ debit tax). I aim to abolish both the GST and income tax and so remove the handbrake on the economy meaning no paperwork and to replace most if not all other forms of tax – which everyone pays and may well even turn Australia into a tax haven itself. In August 2018, the ATO announced it was bringing in an annual charge for holding an ABN – a tax on being a taxpayer! For me this has been the last straw … enough is enough! All the other parties are a policy free zone (see my old independent www.whigparty.com.au website for details). Parliament is dissolved. All you've got to do is vote. Download my how to vote card to your smartphone from my conservative national website - www.whigparty.com. au. The other parties are a policy free zone running an entirely negative campaign by holding the balance of power to stifle the introduction of these vital measures. Don’t risk another LNP or Labor government. Take it while it's on offer. You will not be disappointed.

Phone: 0438 953 142 Email: fisher@unitedaustraliaparty.org.au Website: www.unitedaustraliaparty.org.au/candidates/trevor-gray Facebook: www.facebook.com/TrevoryGrayUAP It’s time for politicians to grow up and stop behaving like spoilt children. Young men and young women are looking for leaders and visionaries for the future they will inherit. How can political leaders expect a country, a community or the world to become more tolerant and respectful when those very leaders continually attack each other personally in the most vicious, intolerant and disrespectful manner day in and day out - it’s a waste of our money and we demand a higher standard. It’s time for our political leaders to be held to account and lead by example and demonstrate through their actions and to the young men and young women in their communities looking to them for leadership to tackle the important issues, not constantly being distracted by media cycles and revenge fuelled personal attacks. The measure of any free and respectful society is how it treats its senior citizens. The United Australia Party will give our elderly the respect they deserve and stop insulting the contribution our senior citizens have made to this country and our communities and increase the age pension by $150 a week, which will enrich our communities in numerous ways. We will reform the tax system and move the date for provisional tax and free up small business cash flow totalling $70 billion each year to be injected directly into the economy. We will back Australian farmers by introducing the Australia Fund to support our primary producers and farmers in times of natural disasters or hardship. We will make home loans tax deductible and stop the sell-off of agricultural land to foreign powers. It’s time to think much bigger.

Love Australia or Leave Party
Phone: 0424 869 110 Email: paul-monaghan@bigpond.com Website: www.loveaustraliaorleave.com.au Facebook: www.facebook.com/LoveAustraliaOrLeaveParty I call upon the voters of Fisher to look beyond the parties and to look at the candidates - who they are and what they stand for and if they have a proven track history of delivering. I have not run a campaign of slander against the opposition. I have run a fair campaign based on who I am, my solid morals and my long track history of delivery to the community of the Sunshine Coast. I am a community minded man, my name is engraved on plagues from the PCYC to the Rotary building at the Sunshine Coast showgrounds, to the wall of honour at Sippy Creek Animal Refuge, just to name a few. These accolades don't appear with one off donations. These come from years of donating time and energy to larger projects to better the community as a whole. I have been a JP (Qual) for over 20 years and served on management committees of numerous sporting clubs, and still do. My wife and I proudly support and serve with the amazing volunteers at Rosie’s Friends on the street since last winter, thus my passion to help those less fortunate than most. Just imagine what such a community minded man can do if given the privilege to serve as your elected member of Parliament. The pull that those two letters MP after my name would bring with it and the government cheque book in my back pocket, the results could be endless and amazing. I am a successful small business owner, having put apprentices through their trade and I have taught the next generation at TAFE. Being a firearms’ instructor, I have taught firearms’ safety to the general public as well as improved the skills of those who serve in our police and military to protect you, the citizens of this fine land. But most of all, I promise to bust my gut every day to bring change to Fisher and to listen to you and serve you in the way that you deserve.

Phone: 5493 5556 Email: andrew.wallace.mp@aph.gov.au Website: www.andrewwallacemp.com.au Facebook: www.facebook.com/wallace4fisher I lived in the Sunshine Coast hinterland for more than 10 years, in Eudlo. I understand the unique challenges that are faced by families living in this region. I know that whilst the coast is more densely populated, it is not the centre of the universe. People living west of the Bruce Highway deserve their fair share of our federal government’s focus and expenditure. In the three years I have been your federal member I have kept that principle firmly in the forefront of my mind. I believe I have demonstrated time and again my commitment to Sunshine Coast hinterland residents, with unprecedented amounts of federal funding. Alongside dozens of smaller community projects, I have delivered $6 million to build Australia’s first residential treatment facility for those suffering from eating disorders in Mooloolah Valley as well as $1 million for IFYS to help homeless young people in the hinterland and funding for three new mobile phone black spot towers. I have delivered funding for a new project pool at Beerwah Aquatic Centre, sustainable beef farming in Maleny, new wildlife conservation facilities at Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital, the final six holes at Maleny Golf Club and extensive upgrades to Palmwoods Memorial Hall and Glasshouse Country RSL. I have delivered record funding for hinterland schools, including new sports facilities at Glasshouse Christian College and Maleny State High School, more child care placements in Landsborough, Beerwah and Glenview and more aged care placements in Beerwah. This election I am committing to delivering even more. A re-elected Morrison government would, for example, pay for a total renovation of Conondale Pool and provide funding to construct a new men’s shed in Mooloolah Valley, as well as continuing to progress our $3.2 billion in already funded upgrades to the Bruce Highway and duplication of the North Coast rail line. It has been the greatest privilege of my life to represent Fisher residents over the past three years. I have sought to deliver for the hinterland throughout that time and I am committed to continue, if re-elected, to fight for hinterland locals in the years to come.

I’m a 28-year-old qualified electrician and have worked in the industry for more than ten years. I have also worked in hospitality, retail and IT. I have both the enthusiasm of youth and the experience from my working life to make tough choices and educated decisions. I’m state school educated and the first in my family to graduate from high school. I also studied at TAFE during my apprenticeship and, until recently, I’ve been studying a diploma of arts at the University of Southern Queensland – studies that I’ve put on hold to run at this election. I come from a humble working-class family. My mother works as a teacher’s aide and my father is a qualified mechanic. Unlike most of my competing candidates, I live west of the highway in Glass House Mountains and understand why people in the Sunshine Coast hinterland often feel neglected by government. The key reasons why I put my hand up to run for Labor in the seat of Fisher include: • Fighting for more money to be allocated towards public infrastructure and vital services, including our state schools and public hospitals. • Restoring penalty rates to workers in the retail and hospitality industries. • Fighting for more money to be invested in renewable energy and the environment. • Reforms to our aged care facilities so our elderly are properly cared for in their golden years. • Fighting for a more equal playing field so that those who are born into less have more opportunities than the generations before them. There is a clear choice when it comes to voting on election day - a choice for positive change and definitive action under Labor, or more of the same old stagnation under the LNP. I hope to represent the people of Fisher and be the hard-working representative this electorate deserves.

The Greens have a comprehensive plan to transform Australia’s energy system to a clean, smart, renewable economy. To protect and restore the hinterland, The Greens plan to establish an introduced species inventory and implement better management plans to control invasive species. We will reinstate the National Bushfire Mitigation Program, providing additional funding. The Greens will restore the Liberal/National Party’s cuts to Landcare and invest $200 million into the National Reserve System Program. The number of jobs for Indigenous rangers will be increased to 5,000 by 2025 and we will invest an additional $20 million a year into the Indigenous Protected Areas network, ensuring a network is established on the Sunshine Coast for the first time. Landowners can apply for grants of up to $25,000 for conservation actions related to their conservation covenant management plan and The Greens will put a stop to the practice of coal seam gas fracking. Critically, The Greens will develop recovery plans for every known threatened species including the koala, grey-headed flying fox, black-throated finch and Mary River turtle, by investing in the Department of the Environment and Energy to do the work of improving the quality of these recovery plans. The hinterland is the home of many wonderful artists and artisans. The Greens plan to support a creative and innovative Australia by helping to grow the arts sector by investing in local content production and reinstating funding to the independent Australia Council for the Arts, providing security and confidence to the sector. We also intend to continue to protect the ABC and SBS and keep them fully funded and independent. It has been a pleasure to stand for The Greens in the seat of Fisher for this federal election. I feel positive about the opportunity for change and will continue to advocate for the protection and restoration of the hinterland, the Sunshine Coast and our nation, now and into the future. 23
Hinterland Kids New buildings officially opened
Glasshouse Christian College recently celebrated the official opening of its new Sports Centre and stage one of its Performing Arts Centre and music rooms. The Reverend Chris Johnson had the auspicious job of officially opening the buildings and unveiling the plaques. After the formalities, the guests were taken on a tour of the new buildings, which were in full use by GCC students. Senior students worked out in the gym and showed off some of the equipment while others played a game of volleyball on the undercover courts. GCC’s jazz group entertained guests in the new music rooms and lower primary students showed their enjoyment of music appreciation in their beautiful new room. All are welcome to visit the new Sports Centre and music rooms during Glasshouse Christian College’s open day on Saturday, May 18 from 10am-2pm.

Mooloolah State School is celebrating its 125-year anniversary with a series of events and a good old-fashioned hoe down is planned for the first event on Friday, May 24 from 5–9pm. The band is booked, so make sure you get your jeans and flannelette shirt washed and your boots polished for some toe tapping country music. The school hall will be transformed with plenty of checks, hessian and hay bales for a fun-filled evening. Mooloolah Valley Lions Club will be there to serve up a hearty feed and the tuck shop will have a feast of sweets on offer. There will be prizes for best dressed and dancing, and if you are feeling lucky you will want to get tickets in the monster raffle. For more info check out the Mooloolah State School Facebook page.
By Sonia Clark One of the highlights of this year’s Maleny Show will be a talent marquee to showcase youth music and performing arts from our region on Friday, May 31 from 10am-1pm. Organised by local instrumental music teachers Nathan Hill and Clare Deady, the three-hour music and arts spectacular will feature performances from Maleny State High School’s concert band and dance troupe, Beerwah State High School’s stage band, concert band and dance troupe, and a combined Chancellor State College primary campus concert band and Chancellor State College stage band. Also performing will be the Glass House Coalition, a middle-school band made up of advanced primary instrumental students from local schools as well as younger Beerwah High students. Clare Deady said that 80-100 instrumental students were expected to perform on the day along with the students performing as part of the dance troupes. “This year we are showcasing a much bigger program and also including talented instrumental students from outside the immediate Glass House area. “Each school will have approximately an hour long slot and this will be a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the incredible music and arts programs we have at our local state schools,“ Clare said. The performances will showcase a variety of musical styles and promises to be an enjoyable and engaging program as students of all ages and abilities show the community all the hard work they have put into lessons, rehearsals and practise at home. Clare said the showcase was also a lovely opportunity for parents and family members to see the enjoyment and rewards their children received from participation in the arts.

Active learners on an exciting literacy adventure Children of all ages at Glass House Early Education Centre are encouraged to develop a broad enjoyment of literacy through meaningful, dynamic and playful interactions. Centre coordinator Dee McCaan said that educators at the centre used an educational model referred to as the 3a (Abecedarian approach) that had consistently produced excellent results. Founded on evidence-based teaching and learning strategies, the 3a program has been aligned with contemporary Australian early childhood policy, including the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) and the National Quality Standard (NQS). Dee said the program emphasised the role of young children as active learners and the value of meaningful and response-contingent feedback from educators. Language priority, learning games, conversational elements and enriched caregiving are the four key principles underpinning 3a. “Since incorporating the program into the centre all our educators and team members have witnessed brilliant results,” Dee said. “I’m highly supportive of the way 3a encourages a supportive and engaging literacy learning environment and I’m so pleased we can offer this innovative approach to literacy learning at our centre.”
Glasshouse Country & Maleny News
Dee says that at Glass House Early Education Centre they are also mindful of incorporating principles of literacy with the tools of the current digital age. She says that they seek to provide an immersive environment to install a love for literacy in all forms. “We seek to scaffold the opportunities across platforms of the digital era to best prepare children's learning and development for school and beyond. As a child-focused learning centre, we seek to present literacy activities in an inclusive environment using the available tools and resources we have as there are wonderful opportunities to learn and engage everywhere. “We also look to cues in the natural environment to stimulate learning,” Dee explained. Studies have shown the importance of vertical
perspective learning in literacy as it can increase attention, ability to recall and assists in preparing children for school. Dee says that careful thought is placed not just on the program they deliver at the centre but, just as importantly, how they deliver the program. Educators are consistently mindful of the latest industry and professional studies to ensure the children experience the best program delivery possible. Areas of program focus include playful interactions built on a foundation of enriched care and stable relationships among children and educators. Rich language interactions are also individualised, with a focus on frequent and intentional communication throughout the day between educators and children. “Some of the strategies used at our centre include the use of meaningful terms that are actively used by our educators regardless of the age group. We encourage back and forth conversation, active listening and encouragement,” Dee said. “This validation from our educators lets the children know they are being heard and their input acknowledged and appreciated.” If you would like to find out more about the centre, the programs and opportunities available, or for an obligation free tour, please call 5438 7311, or call into 2 Page Street, Glass House Mountains (no appointment necessary).

Noticeboard Obi Surplus to warm the soul Obi Surplus Enjoyment, designed to create a space for people to share their surplus, will provide three free things needed to get you through winter this year - chicken soup, citrus and good conversation. Melissa Van Kenyon was inspired to demonstrate how to make chicken bone broth based on Sally Fallon’s book 'Nourishing Broth' and she hopes to encourage others to include this cheap, delicious and oh-so-good-for-you stock into their daily eating habits. "Chicken broth is the ultimate fast food that children and adults love - pack it with noodles or turn it into gravy on roast or mashed potatoes, Melissa said. “It’s just yum. If you have it in your fridge or freezer you will always have a quick dinner option. "Also, if you believe Sally Fallon, naturopaths and millennia old folklore, bone broth can cure everything from the common winter cold to cellulite to serious illness such as cancer. Why not?" Melissa said winter was an exciting time at the Surplus as people gathered to talk and enjoy the bounty of citrus it had generously been given. Take the day off work on Wednesday, June 5 and bring along anything from your home or garden that you no longer need or would like to share. Goods not taken are donated to the Shed The Light Op Shop in Kenilworth. Obi Surplus Enjoyment is a free event held at the Obi Obi Hall, 856 Obi Obi Rd, Obi Obi at 9.30am on the first Wednesday of every month.

Mike Turner Beerwah High Chaplain
I have been a chaplain for more than 16 years and one of the things I have observed is that kids have so much stuff. They have computer tablets, smart phones, gaming consoles and access to online movies. Kids also have so many choices that didn’t exist for previous generations. They are so entertained and they can find out information about pretty much anything at the touch of a button on their computer. They might have lots of stuff but I believe that the one thing that kids need and want is a good stable family. I have talked with thousands of students and parents and the reality is that no family is perfect. All families have challenges – mine included – but children and youth who have a family who care for them, provide good boundaries and are good role models are almost always confident, secure and successful in life. Family is a natural part of life and the building block of our society. I am a father of three boys and I get that being a parent is a tough job. It takes hard work and

dedication but it is incredibly rewarding. The good news is that in most cases it is not too late to make things right. The bad news is that if it’s left too late it is much harder to make improvements. So‌ don’t put it off. To all you parents and grandparents out there, you can build a family heritage for your kids, grandkids, even other people’s kids by the way you talk to them and treat them and how you live your life. Supporting a family member with a drug or alcohol problem is challenging. Many people are unsure how to respond to a person’s drug or alcohol use, as well as how to manage its impact on other family members. Not-for-profit organisation Lives Lived Well will host three free monthly information sessions at the Beerwah Library for people concerned about a family member’s substance use. The sessions, to be delivered by professional counsellors through Lives Lived Well’s Breakthrough for Families program, will be held on Thursday, June 6 from 9.30–11.30am, Thursday, July 4 from 9.30–11.30am and Thursday, August 1 from 9.30–11.30am. The two-hour session will cover a range of topics, from understanding substance use and its impact on physical and mental health, to practical strategies for supporting a loved one, reducing the risk of overdose or relapse, and connecting family members to other support services. The sessions provide a safe space for families to talk about their concerns and learn more about self care. Out & About Hip hip hooray 10 years today Last week the Glass House Mountains Visitor and Interpretive Centre in Settler’s Rotary Park celebrated its 10th birthday. The event brought together representatives from all tiers of government, staff from Visit Sunshine Coast that operates the centre and a wonderful group of dedicated tourism ambassadors. One of the highlights of the event was, of course, the birthday cake, not just because it was a tasty treat but because of the beautiful artwork of our beautiful mountains.

In the Garden A garden in the rain raises Gardening on the Edge It’s that time of the year again … Gardening on the Edge! money for the drought It’s the one weekend – June 8-9 – when locals can have a stickybeak into some
Owners of The Shambles at Montville, Dr Michael and Kyleigh Simpson, held an open garden and plant stall over the Easter weekend attracting more than 500 people and raising $5,770 for the Western Queensland Drought Appeal. Since 2001 the garden has been opened for charity at least once a year, with organisations including Legacy, Cittamani Hospice and local community groups being the beneficiaries of the days. Michael said that this year even the constant rain didn’t dissuade hundreds of visitors coming to support this worthwhile cause as drought continues to affect over 51% of the state. Money raised for the Western Queensland Drought Appeal is used to buy cash cards for drought affected families to use in their local areas. Michael and Kyleigh said they were very fortunate to have a terrific group of willing helpers including Heather and Daryll Koch, Rowena Cavanagh, Glenis Grey, Emily Williams, Brian and Sue Johnson, Alan and Karin, and John, Eleanor and Denise Simpson. If you missed this wonderful opportunity to see their garden or would like the opportunity to see it again, they are planning to open the garden for a Royal Spring Open Garden on October 5-6. New and returning visitors to the garden will be able to see an extensive display of orchids, spring flowering shrubs and many rare plants. Some of the funds raised from this event will be used to assist Michael and Kyleigh to publish their ninth book ‘The Queenslanders, Homes and Gardens. Their second century’, which celebrates the quintessential Queenslander house and garden and the challenges that these antique houses face in their second century. Heather Koch, Sue Johnson and Emily Williams were some of the helpers at the open garden
Bush food bounty
with Spencer and Karen Shaw
The bounty of this land is considerable and there are many Australian food plants that are must-haves for your garden. Beach celery (Apium prostratum) grows naturally in fertile soils just beyond the tide line on the coast, but it grows even better in the vegetable/herb garden. It has a flavour and appearance that sits somewhere between celery and parsley and is great for salads and as a fresh herb. Lemon myrtle (Backhousia citriodora) is a must have for any garden and is a great flavouring for drinks, rice and desserts. Davidson plums (Davidsonia spp.) are spectacular foliage specimens with their large leaves and large beautiful looking plum-like fruit. They are a tad sour but nothing that a few spoons of sugar can’t fix to make a spectacular jam, syrup or chutney. We have several native raspberries and one of our favourites is wild raspberry (Rubus probus), a bushy shrub that grows 1.5-2m, with very tasty mist fruit. Finger limes are a great local treat and are now highly sought after the world over. But wait there’s more ... native mints, scrambling lily, tamarinds, bunya pine and many, many more. Taste the real Australia and add local flavours to your diet with native plants in your backyard.
Eco-Nursery
lovely gardens in and around Maleny. Organised annually by the Maleny Garden Club to raise money for local charities, groups and organisations, Gardening on the Edge is an explosion of colour, landscapes and new ideas for garden lovers or even if you just want to have a nice day out. Six properties are open to the public and entry just $20 for all the gardens on show … that’s such good value for the range of gardens you get to see. There is a free garden expo at the Maleny Showgrounds happening both days as well. The garden expo is chockablock with stalls, exhibits, plants sales, talks, displays and great food and coffee - and it’s free! A fantastic range of plants sellers will be at the expo, many selling rare or unusual plants you never ever get to see at a standard nursery. For all the details, check the website www.malenygardenclub.org/about-goe.

Winners will be randomly drawn and contacted via email or Facebook Messenger. Winning tickets can be collected from the garden expo entry at the Maleny Show Pavilion on the weekend of Gardening on the Edge (June 8 or 9).

Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Graeme Glover Wonderful weather brought people out to play for another great week of fun at the bowls club. Congratulations to those who supported our Tuesday morning games of triples, with some good form shown by Brett Gillis and his team. Wednesday saw Maleny represented at the Kilcoy monthly competition. It was great to see the club having new members travel and get a broad range of playing experience. The team came away with a win and a close loss. Well done to those who travel to meet our club commitments with fellow hinterland clubs. Wednesday night saw a good roll up with the final of this round to be played this week. Mavericks are doing quite nicely in this competition with Handels close on their tail. Paul Kemp got a new recruit to boost the bridge club team in the form of regular scroungers player John Long trying out the Wednesday format. Sorry Paul, same result. Welcome to the visitors who enjoyed the burgers and bowls. Friday scroungers was well supported with 18 bowlers all trying to make the final for that most coveted trophy of being able to avoid the handicapper and get on a winning streak. Miles Allen has sent out information to all about the upcoming finals series. The beginning of the club championships has seen some good games being played. Thanks again to all who have been able to nominate within their schedule and make these games possible. A reminder to all, please nominate your team for the Monday monthly pairs. Jim Weidman will be seeking names so beat him and get yours up on the board at the club. Thanks all for supporting this great afternoon of bowls.

Easy Find Classifieds The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker On Sunday, May 5 with the Wood Expo dominating the showgrounds six players took advantage of a picture-perfect afternoon to strut their stuff on the lawn. Sarah Widin and Wallace Roy paired up to beat Vince Carbery and Robert Elliot 10–8. Wallace played very well in his first game of association demonstrating some spectacular rolling skills in the process. Nick Cram played without luck in a game against Ken Barker going down 5-15. On Tuesday, May 7, it being the first Tuesday of the month, we had the pleasure of the company of a group of players from Range Care who had morning tea and then played several games of golf croquet. This group exhibits the best of sport – physical activity in the open air on a beautiful day and enjoyment of friendly competition. Donna Manning, Nick, Ken, and Vince played in our team competing for the Lochwood Trophy last Wednesday against Caloundra at home. Ken lost his game against Helen Matchett 14–20. Nick won his against Murray Tinker 21–16. Donna and Vince went down to Helen and Murray 11–19 in the deciding doubles match. Caloundra took the honours in the round - two games to one. Well done Caloundra. We’ll see you in the return match. Vince Carbery, our president, has one of the cleanest swings in the game. It allows for accuracy over great distances and is one of his many strong points. Coaching for beginners and others is available on the picturesque lawns at the bottom of the Maleny Showground from 8-10 am on Saturdays. These are popular sessions in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Play days are on Thursdays and Sundays at 1pm for 1.30pm start. Our web address is https://rangecroquetatmaleny.org.au. For details contact president Vince Carbery on 5494 2193 or secretary Priscilla Vickers on 5494 3555.

Bad jokes that you can’t help but laugh at (part two) What’s the difference between a rabbit and a plum? They’re both purple except for the rabbit. Two windmills are standing in a wind farm. One asks: “What’s your favourite type of music?” The other says: “I’m a big metal fan.” What’s red and bad for your teeth? A brick. Two guys walk into a bar. The third guy ducks. Did you hear the story about the claustrophobic astronaut? He just needed some space. What kind of tea is hard to swallow? Reality.
Your Stars ARIES March 21 - April 20 The planet Venus enters the sign of Taurus bringing her rounded wisdom to your money matters. Your ruling planet Mars now enters the sign of Cancer, making you emotionally driven with home and family matters. Do not fall into stubborn traps with regards defensiveness. Full Moon at weekend gives flash feelings in love and money. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 How nice to have the pleasure-loving planet Venus gracing your sign for the next three weeks. This is usually the time that you get thrown treats and temptations. Make time for imagination and creativity. Grace your home with pretty flowers. The full Moon in Scorpio impacts you to look for excitement and to do something personal. GEMINI May 22 - June 23 Now that Venus enters Taurus and Mars enters Cancer, your social activity cools off and you should find valuable private time for your personal space. The full Moon in Scorpio over the weekend ushers in an exciting frame of events where you consider a shrewd investment. In fact, perhaps you might even land a sudden bonanza! CANCER June 24 - July 22 The full Moon this weekend in another water sign, namely Scorpio, may have you wondering where you stand concerning an emotional matter. You need to know that you are not to get pulled into disagreements, especially with those people rehashing old gripes. You are to note that playing old mental tapes affects your health.
Week Beginning 15/05/2019
with Edgar J. Winter www.astroclairvoyant.com SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 The weeks ahead indicate dynamic shifts from seeking adventure into career networking! You should trust in an elder’s wise advice. This is the time to make a sound, stable, long-term growth decision. The Scorpio Moon leaves that sign, so Sunday sees the Moon in your own sign making everything upbeat and you are ready for good fortune. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 With the planet Venus entering Taurus, another earth sign like yours, you should expect people to notice you over the next three weeks. So, this weekend is the start of an upbeat social trend. The full Moon will be in Scorpio and you should receive news that sheds favourable light on a private problem. Get someone’s assistance with that. AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 The weekend sees a burst of attention that is now urgently needed to decide between career and home. You may forever see a change in your home and family, and you make it for your good. The weekend is for fun and recreation. Thanks to earthy planets passing through your home and family matters you are not to worry re changes. PISCES February 20 - March 20 There is no rush to jump to conclusions as the planet Venus will make heaven for you over the next three weeks being in the practical sign of Taurus. Also, with Mars entering Cancer, you are embarking on a fabulous time where everyday activities become pleasant, agreeable and enjoyable. The full Moon spotlights vacation plans now.

A man and a giraffe walk into a bar. After a few drinks, the giraffe falls over and dies. The man begins to walk out when the bartender stops him. “Hey, you can’t leave that lyin’ there,” the bartender yells out. The man turns around: “It’s not a lion. It’s a giraffe.” Why can’t a nose be 12 inches long? Because then it’d be a foot. Why don’t dinosaurs talk? Because they’re dead. A dyslexic man walks into a bra. Get it? What do you call a fly with no wings? A walk.
LEO July 23 – August 22 Although you are good at business networking, this is a week that you have a private drive to root out problems or retreat for security. This is because Venus enters Taurus and gives your flamboyant fire sign a push towards basic reality. Taking risks now most likely is under faulty judgement so don’t commit resources as it could be costly. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 Your social life is going to enjoy a boost in popularity and a very good chance to travel, especially over the next three weeks. Just be careful about making plans over the weekend under the full Moon in Scorpio. A blue print for success is a conversation to include knowledgeable discussions. Do not go out on an overspend limb now. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 There are some friendly playmates available and you are having chats about fiscal and business decisions and arrive at a satisfactory compromise. This is because of Venus being in the practical Taurus over the next three weeks. That aspect says not to spend carelessly or imprudently. A Scorpio full Moon says protect possessions. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 With Venus having a three-week stay in your sector of relationships most Scorpios may meet someone new or enjoy taking a current connection to the next level. The full Moon in Scorpio says a flood-tide of new developments and all-important talks about your personal affairs. You may strike it lucky in some lottery monies!
