Hi Everyone...
So, what have you got planned for the next few weekends? Well I know my diary is packed, starting out next weekend at Landsborough. I haven’t yet worked out if I will be getting my 60s gear on for the fashion parade, but there is so much going on at the Loving Landsborough Day that it is well worth heading along to check it all out. We have included a very extensive program on page 35, so take a look to make sure you get to see everything on Saturday. If that doesn’t suit your schedule you can always head along to the Landsborough Pub for their annual fundraising ‘Pig Racing’ day on Sunday. Then make sure you lock the following Saturday into your diary for the Beerwah Charity Sports Day at the Beerwah Sportsground, which will be a huge day of activities for the whole family. You can see everything from the winners of the scarecrow competition, strongmen lifting up cars and carrying them around, children and their ponies in costume, a talent competition, great cars and utes in the Show and Shine, and much more – all for a gold coin entry. Then if you love your music you won’t want to miss the Maleny Music Festival from Friday September 1 to Sunday September 3. The festival is combining with other arts and cultural activities throughout the Maleny town centre that weekend, bringing them all together to create Art Street Maleny. So, keep reading GC&M News to stay informed Regards, about what all of the events are offering!

Charity bins moved on By Lea Parkes Over the past few years GC&M News has regularly been contacted by many locals who were shocked, disgusted and very cranky at those thoughtless individuals who would use the Lifeline Charity Bins at Beerwah as a dumping ground. Quite often by Monday morning the area was not just a huge eyesore but was more of a rubbish pile, and sadly even the suitable items that had been placed into the bins by those who were doing the right thing had been contaminated by items such as rubbish, wet clothing and materials, and on some occasions even dead animals. I am sure I won’t be alone in applauding the decision made to relocate the bins to the Beerwah Resource Recovery Centre on Roberts Road. Trish Cashin from Iolar Operational Services, the company that manages council’s Resource Recovery Centre, said that when Lifeline approached them about taking on the responsibility of managing the charity bins, they were more than happy to do it.

“We are really proud to be able to offer Lifeline this professional approach to ensuring that only the suitable items for retail resale are placed in the bin, and we know that this has been really appreciated by Lifeline,” Trish said. While there have been some concerns raised by members of the local community in regard to the relocation of the charity bins, it would appear that this might be a case of people not understanding what Lifeline can actually use. For instance one local was upset that they couldn’t donate their used mattress to Lifeline, however the reality is that Lifeline is not legally able to sell them due to health regulations. While talking to Trish, she also confirmed for us that there is also no charge for dumping your mattress or old white goods or electronic items at the recycle centre. It would seem that this is a message that might not have reached those that think it is easier to just dump these old household items in the bush!

Mooloolah internet nears meltdown “The reason we’re here is that we have lousy internet,” was the opening statement from Chris Lloyd at the Mooloolah Valley community breakfast meeting held recently. The meeting, organised through Cr Jenny McKay and involving representatives from NBN, Telstra, Sunshine Coast Council and MPs Andrew Wallace and Mark McArdle, drew over fifty locals into Kenny’s Cafe to air grievances and hear what the telcos have to offer. Chris, who is the (informal) group spokesperson and administers the Facebook page ‘Mooloolah internet’, explained that the community is facing continued problems with deteriorating technology, infrastructure and restrictive internet service. “For a long time now the internet service in Mooloolah Valley has been teetering on the edge of collapse,” said Chris. “The primary cause is the state of the infrastructure – the local exchange and the copper wire network. “That compromised infrastructure is then supposed to be able to handle the coming NBN services.” One of the problems appears to be that the exchange has been on the schedule for an upgrade since 2015, and Telstra have been continually delaying the start date every three months ever since. Andrew Wallace, Federal Member for Fisher wants solutions. “I have been working on the issue with Telstra and NBN to get you the speeds you deserve,” he said at the meeting.
“I have been told that there would be a backhaul exchange upgrade completed by July, then it was August and now I’m hearing September. “Telstra owes the Mooloolah locals an explanation and a guarantee on when the upgrade will happen.” James Blackmore from Telstra was hopeful, but not convincing. “I can tell you that it is scheduled for completion for the end of August. It’s committed, it’s funded, it’s planned and it’s scheduled... but that’s the only certainty I can give you now,” he said. “The backhaul upgrade should relieve the congestion problems during peak times for those currently receiving their internet through the copper wires.” Damon Cavalchini from NBN advanced his theory on why people are having internet problems. “NBN guarantee a wholesale service of 25Mbs download and 5Mbs upload,” he explained. “Retail providers then buy capacity from NBN to provide various plans to households... NBN isn’t a retailer provider. “Many people aren’t on the right plan and so don’t get the internet service they expect.” When asked about the problems with the failing copper wire network, Damon said NBN has a commitment to ensure that the wholesale guarantee capacity is achievable through their infrastructure. “If there is a problem with the copper network, we have a commitment to remediate those problems,” he said.
Mooloolah locals listen in on NBN plans for the area One fact that was discussed which isn’t widely known is that people who are programmed to migrate onto the wireless broadband or satellite NBN networks do not have to change off their ADSL service (if they have one). These folk can stay on ADSL for as long as Telstra maintain that technology. So if you have great ADSL at the moment and aren’t getting fibre NBN – you are allowed to keep your ADSL into the foreseeable future. Mr Wallace was optimistic following the meeting. “I would like to thank the people of Mooloolah for their feedback on their internet speeds and phone services,” he said. “It’s because of this feedback that I have been able to proactively engage with NBN, Telstra and the Sunshine Coast Council in an effort to deliver better services to constituents. “I look forward to seeing constituents at our next community meeting in two months, where Telstra and NBN will give us further updates about the phone exchange upgrade and the continued rollout of the NBN.”

The material change of use development application (MCU16/0275) to expand an existing quarry on the Beerburrum-Woodford Road has created a considerable level of interest. With the public consultation period now over, Sunshine Coast Council has received 185 submissions. For a township as small as Beerburrum – with only 270 properties and 560 people over the age of 20 – the response may be considered as exceptional. The majority of the submissions (101) are objecting to the quarry expansion by the Barro Group, with the main issues being truck movements, road user safety, residential nuisance (noise, dust, etc), impact upon school users, reduction of the small town ambience, impact upon property values, negative perception for tourists and diminution of natural landscape values. Kevin Grealy writes that the additional 170 trucks a day will exacerbate traffic congestion at the intersections around the town, particularly when an accident closes lanes on Steve Irwin Way. Claire O’Rourke feels that residents, businesses and the school at Beerburrum would not benefit from trucks rumbling through the town. Aaron Bulfin and Kristy Holloway do not oppose development and the need for resources available in the area (quarries, forestry, etc) but they think that this development needs very careful consideration.
“The constant flow of heavy vehicles right through the heart of town will not only drive residents insane, but it very may well deter visitors who come to enjoy all that Beerburrum has to offer. Surely there is an alternative route that the development applicant can consider if this quarry does go ahead,” they wrote. Sharon Beattie does not support the reopening of the quarry due to what she describes as the enormous impact on the amenity of the residents of Beerburrum and the negative impact to recreational uses within the forestry around the quarry site. But not all submissions are against the quarry, with a number (84) showing support. Alec Harries from Komatsu Australia supports the quarry, saying that it is essential for the viability of businesses such as theirs that opportunities, such as the quarry, are realised. AR Whittleton from Landscape City in Caboolture considers that the isolated location away from residences is suitable and from his assessment, there doesn’t seem to be any environmental issues. Brian Benngel from Kin Kin supports the quarry as he sees that it will keep the economy growing and provide employment opportunities. Geoff Pickup of Ascot laments that quarries don’t get approved due to “local community huff and puff – not in my backyard attitude”. It appears from the submissions that lobbying for

NBN changes to towerless broadband for lucky few both the pro and anti quarry factions has been proactive, with many of the submissions being carbon copies of each other. The next step is that council’s Planning Assessment team will be reviewing all of the submissions and continuing with the assessment, according to Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski. “The formal response from the State Government has not yet been received and is expected late August,” he said. “It is not likely that a decision will be made for a few months yet. I look forward to being able to speak to council on this critical issue to ensure that they understand the impacts and interests of the Beerburrum community as well as the bigger picture.” To focus local community pressure, a ‘Beerburrum Action Group’ has been formed. The fledgling group's Facebook page sets out their agenda. “We are a group of residents who collectively object to a proposal by Barro Group to open a quarry on our doorstep – 150 trucks per day and close to homes,” it explains. “Our aim is to fight against the establishment of a quarry in our beautiful little town.” The group – with the support of Tracey Bell Henselin, One Nation Candidate, and Narelle McCarthy, Sunshine Coast Environmental Council – has organised a town meeting this Wednesday, August 16, from 7pm at the hall in Anzac Avenue, Beerburrum.
Residents in an area of Maleny programmed to receive their NBN via microwave towers delivering fixed wireless broadband have been given some good news... that they are now getting the fibre instead. A copy of a letter forwarded to GC&M News advised residents of Avocado Lane and surrounds that contractors would be coming through to carry out inspections. The inspections, somewhere between July 17 and September 12, are required to enable NBN to produce design plans so that the NBN infrastructure can be installed. Avocado Lane was the locality where NBN searched for a landholder to host a wireless broadband tower, meaning that locals in their area were to receive the less reliable broadband via radio signals. GC&M News asked NBN whether the inability to site a tower in the area resulted in them having to change their preferred plans away from the cheaper option of towers to the more costly installation of optic fibre. No comment had been received by the print deadline. NBN have continually stated that the only broadband option for many local areas is fixed wireless towers, and that they would not be changing their plans due to cost factors. The Avocado Lane decision begs the question... would others – such as Peachester, Conondale, North Maleny and Beerburrum – similarly receive the much better option of fibre optic delivered broadband if they too had held out against the towers?

Weeds are a Sign Your Soil Maybe Sick
Before you start using chemical herbicides, consider this; Weeds are actually doing an important job and they are a sign that your soil is deficient in some minerals. Different coloured weed flowers means specific minerals are not available, which gives you some clues to fix the underlying problems. When you spray with glyphosate based herbicides, you kill everything in the short term, leaving bare soil. But this only compounds the problem in the long term. Make no mistake, where you have bare soil, weeds will ALWAYS beat out what you want to grow. But there are steps you can take to remedy the problem for the long term. To find out more, BEFORE the weeds take over! Call Scott and Haidee on 5499 4656 HOLISTIC LAND USE ADVISOR

On the back of a very successful program of workshops instigated by the Sunshine Coast Council termed ‘Level Up’, an abridged version of the more relevant workshop topics has been formulated into a half day workshop for the benefit of Hinterland businesses to attend. Maleny Commerce Treasurer Jenn Bulcher (Business Manager of Maleny Cheese) provides a good precis of the value and relevance of the subject matter of the Level Up workshops that she attended: “The changes I’ve seen from implementing these digital changes are fantastic and the amount of time we save on administration tasks makes us more productive and more profitable. “I’d say we’ve saved a number of hours of administration a week and, as we get used to this new way of working, it will save us more and more time. “It can be a bit hard to get your head around what is out there, to feel confident that it is safe to move your business online and to know how you actually go about it, but I’m so glad we have done what we have done so far and we are super excited to learn more through the Level Up program. “I think it is an amazing opportunity council is providing local businesses and I encourage others to sign up and go for it.” This half-day workshop will be conducted in Maleny on Thursday September 14 from 12.30pm at the Maleny Community Centre in Maple Street, Maleny.
Jenn from Maleny Cheese This a great opportunity for small/medium sized businesses to attend and view the latest technology tools that can be employed in your business to improve your productivity, profitability and ability to compete in any forum. If you wish to participate in this half day workshop the cost is $50 and you can register via this link: https://levelup.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/ technology-your-need-to-know-as-a-hinterlandbusiness/. Local to tick off bucket list adventure
Beerwah's Casey Bourke is gearing up for a taste of outback adventure as she prepares to travel for more than 25 hours – and 1,584 kilometres – to volunteer at this year’s Birdsville Races, Australia’s oldest and most remote thoroughbred racing carnival. Running on September 1 and 2, the 135th edition of the event will see the red earth of the Simpson Desert come to life with the thundering of hooves for the race that the dust never settles on. The two-day meet sees the small township of Birdsville – regular population 115 – swell to around 7,000 as thousands of racegoers flock from across Australian to revel in an outback experience like no other. Not just a dusty good-time in the bush, the Races present an opportunity to give back to the community, with the event raising funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia – a vital charity that provides help to remote areas often cut off from medical services, as well as inter-hospital transfer services between metropolitan areas. A colourful character – and one of Birdsville’s youngest volunteers – Casey, 32, has been working within the hospitality industry for seven years now. Starting off as a waitress at a local restaurant while still in Year 10 at school, Casey has continued to pursue her career in hospitality, catering for large events – at one point serving up to 800 guests in one night. At Birdsville, Casey will be volunteering on the hospitality team, properly utilising her experience waiting and cleaning. The 2017 Birdsville Races will comprise a 13-race program, and offer a prize pool of $200,000. In addition to the races, the event hosts a wide range of activities and entertainment – from film and comedy nights, to cocktail parties, live music, and Fred Brophy’s famous travelling boxing troupe. Volunteer registrations are still open at www.birdsvilleraces.com/Volunteer, with all volunteers required to be 18 years-of-age or over. For more info head to www.birdsvilleraces.com.

Relax, rejuvenate and refresh you! Hinterland Body and Soul offers luxurious pampering experiences and professional beauty treatments that allow clients to feel wonderfully relaxed, rejuvenated and refreshed. Drop in or pop online to find out more about the full selection of beauty services and results-orientated procedures and treatments available to leave you looking and feeling fabulous! As part of their commitment to offer their Hinterland clients the very best skin treatments possible, Shannon and Jen from Hinterland Body and Soul are excited to advise that they have now teamed up with Renaissance Cosmetic Clinics to offer a monthly in-salon cosmetic injectables service. With more clients wanting to improve the condition of their skin and reduce the effects of ageing, cosmetic injectables can offer an affordable non-surgical treatment option that can deliver outstanding results.
Registered nurse Anna Nolan will be available initially once a month to do dermal fillers and anti-wrinkle injections. Dermal fillers are used to replace volume lost with the ageing process or create enhancement to the contours of the face. They can be injected into most places of the face including lips, cheeks, under the eyes, into frown lines, smile lines and shadows around the mouth. Anti-wrinkle injections can reduce the wrinkles of your frown, forehead, crow's feet and various areas of the lower face. Both procedures can refresh and revitalize your look. Donna Keogh from Skinfit IPL laser also professionally attends to the needs of clients with a range of high end IPL laser, skin needling and Thermage procedures. For example, clients can see great benefits and results with a photofacial (or photorejuvenation), which is a 30 minute procedure where
intense pulses of light are used to penetrate deep into the skin. This treatment is used to treat skin conditions and remove the effects of photo aging such as wrinkles, brown spots, and textures. With little discomfort and minimal risk, the process prompts the skin to create new cells with most clients seeing great results after a series of three to five treatments. ‘Pain free’ super hair removal is also available with the latest IPL system for comfort. Other highly effective treatments include the ‘Thermage’ face procedure. This safe, noninvasive, radiofrequency (RF) cosmetic procedure has been clinically proven to help smooth and improve skin for an overall younger looking appearance. The treatment delivers natural looking results with little to no downtime, and reduces wrinkles and achieves brow lifting, cheek lifting, and jaw line lifting. Skin Needling, or Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT), is a new natural treatment to improve your skin texture, smooth wrinkles, fine lines and soften scars. It is suitable for all skin types and all areas of the face, neck, décolletage and hands. To find out more give Jen or Shannon a call on 5494 0546 or call in at 5/5 Turner Street, Beerwah.

Reward program is hitting a home run
Look at those proud smiles
The Maleny Credit Union’s reward program was set up in recognition of the tireless work that clubs or organisations do in our communities. MCU has recognised the need to financially support them for their role in our community. For every loan approved and drawn at MCU, a local club will benefit. The individual borrower gets to choose who they want to donate the money to. The program has only been running a couple of months and already clubs and organisations are benefitting: Maleny Neighbourhood Centre $750, Maleny Rangers Football Club $350, Maleny Rural Fire Brigade $350, Blackall Range Zonta Club $250, Woodford Bowls Club $250, Conondale Sport & Rec Club $150, Hinterland Bush Links $150, Maleny & Blackall Range Lions Club $100, Sunshine Coast Riding for the Disabled $100, Nambour Rugby League Club $100, Palmwoods Warriors Football Club $100, Sonshine Sanctuary $100, and the Maleny Men’s Shed $50. Nicole Hilton from MCU said, “It’s wonderful at the end of every month to make the calls to these organisations and tell them that we have some money for them. “It’s really our customers that we must thank. They choose Maleny Credit Union, and this allows us to pass on the benefit to our clubs and organisations. “The more customers that borrow from us, the more funds that will go back into the community. The sky is the limit as to how much money could be generated back into the community, strengthening our own local economy,” Nicole said. Small businesses will also profit as the clubs are more than likely to use the funds to shop locally for their needs. More funds going back into our local community could well mean more jobs, so everyone is a winner.
After an amazing weekend at the Gympie Dance Eisteddfod, the students of the Black Swan School of Dance performance team still can’t wipe the smiles off their faces. The Junior Performance Team placed third in the 12 years and under division. This is a tremendous effort given the youngest member of the team is just 7 years old, and owner and director of the Landsboroughbased school, Rebecca Wiltshire, said she couldn't be prouder. “The team placed ahead of a Sunshine Coast rival and a number of larger, franchised dance schools, which just goes to show that bigger aren’t always better,” she said. This is a big win for the team as they look to finish their competition year at the Noosa Dance Eisteddfod held in September. Students in the team take weekly lessons in ballet and jazz to keep competition ready and have thoroughly enjoyed the stage experience the performance team offers them.

Vietnam Veterans Day commemoration service
The Glasshouse Country RSL Sub Branch will hold a ceremony to commemorate Vietnam Veterans Day on Friday August 18 at the Glasshouse Visitor Information Centre Cenotaph commencing at 11am. The ceremony coincides with the 51st Anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan in 1966 where D Company 6 RAR and supporting Units fought off overwhelming numbers of the enemy in a rubber tree plantation in Phuoc Tuy Province, South Vietnam.
Kids with cancer benefit from local generosity
Homewares company Lorraine Lea has successfully raised more than $1 million over five years for children’s cancer charity, Camp Quality. This incredible fundraising amount was achieved through the combined support and effort of their 1,500 independent stylists and 1,000 party hosts during their ‘Party for Kids with Cancer’ campaign. Knowing what a generous community we live in, it is probably not surprising that Maleny local Jodi Hamlyn-Harris and her team ‘Linenoloy’ raised the most amount of money in the country in June this year – a total of $9,711! The money raised will fund Camp Quality’s optimism and resilience building recreational programs for children aged 0 - 13 years, and put smiles on the faces of more than 3,000 kids who are going through their cancer journey.
Golf club expansion underway
Construction has officially started on an additional nine holes at Maleny Golf Club, with the staged design and course development to be carried out over the next two years. Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay said Sunshine Coast Council’s 2017-18 budget included $225,000 for this financial year and another $225,000 for 2018-19 towards the design, construction and establishment of stage two of the golf course. “These additional funds will help the club complete new tees, fairways, greens and plantings for nine additional holes to complete their layout,” Cr McKay said. “The club members have contributed significantly to reach this point, demonstrating their ability to financially invest in the project. “They have provided a strong business plan and have made a commitment to make the site accessible to the wider community." Construction will be staged with three holes to be developed over the coming months, and a further six holes constructed next year. Maleny Golf Club president Max Whitten said, "We have no doubt that once the course is completed it will be one of the best community golf courses on the Sunshine Coast." Cr Jenny McKay with Maleny Golf Club Treasurer Darryl Harbottle and President Max Whitten

Glasshouse Country & Maleny News
Introducing Clarrisa Patterson Clarrisa is coming up to working almost two years as part of the Glass House Early Education Centre team. She has nearly five years of early childhood care experience and has completed her Diploma in Early Childhood Education. Clarrisa rotates her time between the various rooms at the centre and provides valuable support to the lead educators. Being a ‘staff floater’ means that she gets to know all the children at the Centre and she provides a friendly and familiar face that the children respond well to. “ I love the variety of working in all the rooms and developing great relationships with all the age groups. It’s great to walk into the rooms and be greeted by big smiles and sometimes even big hugs from the kids. It’s lovely that the kids feel so comfortable around me,” says Clarrisa. Working with different age groups every day means that Clarrisa gets to help plan and enjoy a variety of activities that suit the various learning stages of the children. She also enjoys watching the children grow and develop their early childhood skills and feels very appreciative that she can be a part of their learning journeys. Working with the nursery children, Clarrisa loves seeing them learn how to walk and discover more about the world around them. With the toddler age group, she spends a lot of time engaging in sensory activities such as finger painting, working with play dough and exploring the outside play area. The children in ‘junior kindy’ are really into imaginary play and Clarrisa spends a lot of her time happily answering a multitude of questions as the children are starting to get much more inquisitive about what they are doing and what’s going on around them. By the time the children are in the ‘kindy’ room they are ready to explore more experimental play.
Glasshouse Country & Maleny News
As part of her ongoing professional development Clarrisa has participated in a number of training days and workshops including early childhood STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) training and ‘Little Scientist’ program work. For children in the kindy room, this training allows Clarrisa and the lead educators to bring a science component into their activities. Currently the children are excited to be learning about water play and colours on the spectrum with the use of food colouring in water. Working in the ‘school ready’ room, Clarrisa enjoys that the children can have great conversations both with others and the staff. At this age the children like to make suggestions about the activities they are interested in and Clarrisa and the team are happy to encourage this independence.
Centre news
Centre coordinator Ange Hardey is really excited that plans for a dedicated yoga room at the Centre are nearly complete! Staff members are currently studying toward achieving their ‘Cosmic Kids’ yoga qualifications and the idea behind the project is that by having a separate space within the centre for a yoga studio children's behaviour will be positively supported as well as providing excitement for the children of getting to visit another space in the centre. The plan is to utilise one of the rooms in Centre 2 to create a lovely calming environment suitable for the yoga studio. “Embedding yoga within the Centre’s service is an addition to support the children's healthy bodies and healthy minds. This is extremely important to Queensland Childcare Service as we strive to educate the children the importance of healthy choices,” explains Ange. The relaxing space will support the child's needs for rest and relaxation and the room can be used by all age groups throughout any time of the day.
Community call out! Old / outgrown gum boots and crocs are requested to make garden pots. If you have some of these you no longer need, please drop them off at the centre during our opening hours: Monday to Friday, 6.30am - 6.30pm.

Introducing Gracie. After recently selling my successful clinic in Melbourne, and bringing with me many years of experience, I’m excited to join the Soulqi team every Monday. I’ve always been fascinated about the ways in which the body is able to heal itself, which was the perfect foundation for my studies into Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine. I am incredibly passionate about helping people improve their health and wellbeing through the practice of acupuncture and Chinese medicine, and throughout my years of practice I have developed a special interest in treating infertility, women’s/hormonal health and pregnancy, and have trained extensively in this area.

You Said It I wish he were right
Jon Woodlands suggests (GC&M News, August 2) that the world will soon start to cool - I wish he were right. Unfortunately an enjoyable century of industrialisation has wrenched the CO2 thermostat to ‘high’ and our grandchildren will pay for it. The seductive idea that climate is controlled by changes in the sunspot cycles has been popular with climate sceptics – for example David Archibold (2007) published a graph predicting that by now the world would be one degree cooler – instead it is up one degree. But this does not stop the solar cycle nonsense. The enthusiasts just shift the goal posts and call it science. Readers should take Jon’s writings with the same scepticism that he applies to climate science. For example: • beware fake facts. He says that glaciers retreated from 1910 to 1939, and implies that things then changed. A global catalogue of glaciers since 1900 shows that in every year retreating glaciers have always outnumbered those advancing, both before and after 1939. The glaciers really are disappearing. • beware of local anecdotes masquerading as global. The cold winter of 1941-2 may have upset the Nazi invasion of Russia, but it was not global. • beware of weather anecdotes masquerading as climate. A few cold winters is not a climate shift. Climatologists want a 30-year average before they call it climate. • beware the logical fallacy of a correlation masquerading as evidence for cause and effect. A period of low sunspot numbers did roughly coincide with the Little Ice Age but no physicist has been able to demonstrate with equations how the sunspot activity caused the cooling. See Wikipedia ‘Little Ice Age’ for six other possible reasons why the world cooled. Jon is entitled to his spread his opinions about climate, but he is not entitled to spread fake facts. It is so sad his efforts give support to the fossil fuel lobby who do not want any action taken on CO2 emissions. David Lowry Conondale
Global warming is real
Mr Woodland’s letter (GC&M News, August 2) about the consequences of solar activity and the Maunder Minimum in the 17th Century, is interesting but irrelevant in our post- industrial environment. He fails to acknowledge the effects of the Milankovitch Cycles that are caused by changes in the shape of the earth’s orbit around the sun, the tilt of the Earth’s rotation axis, and the wobble of our axis. As the Earth's orbit changes, so too does the amount of sunlight that falls on different latitudes and in seasons. The amount of sunlight received in the summer at high northern latitudes appears to be especially important to

determining whether the Earth is in an ice age or not. When the northern summer sun is strong, the Earth tends to be in a warm period. When it is weak we tend to be in an ice age. As we come out of an ice age, the sea level rises about 400 feet, and we enjoy a warm period 'like' the one we are in now. That is the natural cycle, brief warm periods followed by an ice age about every 100,000 years. This natural cycle is range bound and well understood, largely constrained by the Milankovitch Cycles. Since the beginning of the industrial age, humankind has caused such a dramatic departure from the natural cycle, that it is hard to imagine anyone thinking that we are still in the natural cycle. This departure is so dramatic that it has instigated a new era. According to many studies, there is enough overwhelming global evidence that atmospheric, geologic, hydrologic, biospheric and other earth system processes are now altered by humans, and we have departed the Holocene and entered the Anthropocene. Simply put, based on the evidence, mankind has forced the Earth climate system to depart from its natural cycle. The Maunder Minimum, when coupled with the Milankovitch Cycles and anthropocene global warming, will affect our future Earth, not by cooling but by heating. Global warming is real. What is 5G About?
Over the years we have become used to 2G, then 3G and now 4G phone power. What is the ‘G’? A ‘G’ is the generation of WiFi technology. Each generation offers faster internet access than the previous one, but is incompatible with the previous one. A higher number ‘G’ means more power to send out and receive more through a network. 5G is the next phone generation. 5G applications will require new spectrum bands in higher frequency ranges (RF) above 6-100 GHz and beyond, utilising submillimetre and millimetre waves to allow super high rates of data to be transmitted in the same amount of time as compared to previously. A recent USA study on 60GHz waves stated, “the analyses of penetration depth show that more than 90% of the transmitted power is absorbed in the epidermis and dermis layer.” The effects of these as studied at Hebrew University were found to cause physical pain. Small millimetre waves do not travel well through buildings, cannot travel far, and tend to be absorbed by rain and plants thus interfering with the signal. To counter this problem 5G will utilise small stations. This means wireless antennas on every lamp post, home and business throughout all suburbs, towns and cities. By 2020 they will be rolled out in Australia.

Plastic straw solution
I read with interest Richard Giles’ letter about the huge problem of plastic straws in our waste stream, most particularly for ocean life. This is an issue that I’ve been seeking solutions for, while not giving up the use of straws altogether. After switching over to reusable glass straws for my three teenagers at home, I’ve set up a small market-based business, Sustainable Me, to supply glass and stainless steel straws to local residents and food businesses. I can be found on Facebook at Sustainable Me. Another local business will shortly be selling compostable straws, suitable for take-away drinks. The ‘War on Waste’ has created great awareness, and there are many solutions that we can undertake locally to keep our waterways beautiful. Liz Harris Landsborough
The meaning of progress
With reference to Gwen Malcolm’s letter in GC&M News August 9 edition: My housemate and I moved to the Glass House Mountains because of ongoing clearing and loss of the visual, environmental and aesthetic amenity of our previous home in the Moreton Bay region. We chose this location because we felt that the existing beauty of this amazing place with its status as a tourist icon would be respected by the Sunshine Coast Council who would, we believed, make every effort to protect its visual and environmental integrity. After attending the meeting held in Beerburrum with representatives of the Barro Group Quarry and council representatives, I am not so sure that is the case anymore. Indeed, many residents voiced their concerns about ongoing problems with noise, dust and traffic pollution which will only get worse should expansion take place. Gwen Malcolm is right, this area has enough quarries and we are already having to deal with the constant flow of trucks using Coonowrin Road to get to Steve Irwin Way and the Bruce Highway. If council approves this Material Change of Use it will only open the door to more extensive quarrying across the entire Barro Group Quarry site. We think we are fortunate to live in Glass House,
What is lenders’ mortgage insurance? There are numerous costs involved in taking out a home loan. Lenders’ mortgage insurance (LMI) is one fee associated with home loans that won’t apply to every home buyer, but it’s important to know about it if you’re considering taking out a home loan in the near future. What is lenders’ mortgage insurance? LMI is insurance that is taken out by your lender. It’s designed to give them security should you be unable to meet your repayments due to defaulting on your home loan. In most cases, LMI applies when you borrow more than 80 per cent of the total value of the home. LMI is a one-off payment that can be either included in your home loan or can 20
be paid upfront upon settlement. What are the advantages of lenders’ mortgage insurance? You may not need to pay LMI at all if you manage to save a sizeable deposit, but LMI can make property more accessible. For instance, you might have your eye on your dream home but don’t have a deposit of 20 per cent or more. If you can show your lender you can afford to meet the repayments and take advantage of LMI, it’s possible they might lend you amount you need to purchase the property. How is lenders’ mortgage insurance calculated? Your loan-to-value ratio (LVR) is calculated by dividing the cost of your home loan by the value of the property you’re buying.
The amount of LMI you’re charged depends on your loan-to-value ratio (LVR). Generally, the lower your LVR, the lower the fee. LVR is calculated by dividing the total cost of your home loan by the value of the property. You can get an estimate of how much LMI you’ll be up for using an online LMI calculator, but a Smartline mortgage adviser can provide you with a personalised quote. Are there any LMI concessions available? Some states offer LMI-related concessions. New South Wales, for example, abolished insurance duty on LMI as part of its 2017-18 budget. This could potentially save property buyers
around $3,000 on a home valued at $800,000 with a deposit of $50,000. To find out more about lenders’ mortgage insurance and figure out how much you’d be up for, chat to your Smartline Adviser Teresa Harrison today.

which is indeed a zone of scenic significance as well as being Heritage Listed – that is why we bought our house here and why we want it to stay that way. Already too much of the beauty and village atmosphere of Glass House has been eroded by high density residential estates and the development of what is considered Essential Infrastructure. If this type of development is termed “progress” by the Sunshine Coast Council then I would suggest that the true meaning of the word “progress”, which, according to The Macquarie Concise Dictionary is “proceeding to a further or higher stage; advancement in general; continuous improvement; increasing perfection” would be seriously held in question. Progress in this case is to retain the beauty, the stunning visual aspect and the environmental integrity of the surrounds that draw so many visitors to this region. Heavy price for past decision
Queensland is paying a heavy price for Glass House MP Andrew Powell’s term as LNP Environment Minister. Media reports last week outlined a drastic increase in interstate rubbish being dumped in Ipswich landfill sites. Andrew Powell created this stink when he scrapped the landfill levy the Bligh government had introduced. Following extensive community and business consultation, the Bligh Labor government introduced a landfill levy on December 1, 2011. When the LNP’s Campbell Newman experiment took office, they set about slashing the public service, including dumping the landfill levy from July 1, 2012. New South Wales garbos suddenly found it more profitable to truck their rubbish to Queensland than pay to dump it in their own back yard. Sadly, for Queensland, this is just one example in a long line of appalling decisions taken by Andrew Powell as Environment Minister. Let’s not forget this former minister oversaw the bulldozing of our tree clearing laws, and sacked public servants in his own department who were responsible for environmental monitoring and assessment. Residents here in Glass House have deep memories of the Newman/Nicholls agenda of cuts and privatisation. Glass House locals also know we can never afford a return to Andrew Powell as Environment Minister. Brent Hampstead Labor Candidate for Glass House
Bad for Beerwah
Council publications and councillors themselves have supported maintaining the rural character of the hinterland areas. Yet now Beerwah will have a new development of 48 lots (average size say 240m2) as per an approved application, coupled with a threebedroom, two-bathroom, and one double garage residence on each lot, all crammed into an original two hectare site. This is completely out of character for the Beerwah area. There is only 2.5 metres between the adjoining dwellings, and the so called ‘Recreational’ area is pathetic for the 100 plus residents who may ultimately reside there. The whole thing is, and will continue to be, an eyesore! On top of this, the application – lodged by the developer, Seventeen Seventy P/L – was deemed code assessable by council and therefore no public advertising was necessary and public objections to the application were not considered, so it was processed and approved. Councillors should also be aware that constituents who voted them into their position of trust will not tolerate abuses similar to this in the future – you may not be able to prevent approval, but at least let us know so that we can publicly make our feelings known! Which brings up another point we, the constituents

(and this includes myself) are largely to blame for allowing instances like this to occur. Council on its website publishes details of applications submitted for property development (and decisions made on same) on a weekly and monthly basis. So the information is there for us to view and be aware of what is going on in our area. Maybe we didn’t know about this being available, but it is there for all to see and comment on if we feel it is warranted and we are sufficiently motivated. I am not anti development, but I am strongly against bad development in areas where it is not appropriate and out of character. Coming from FNQ I have seen my share of good and bad property development during property booms. This is a bad one. If we do not make our position clear to the powers that be, as to what we consider reasonable and acceptable in our respective areas, then I am afraid we will have problems such as this to contend with for some time to come. As residents who generally are proud of the environment, we do not need this type of shambles being inflicted on us. John Weeks Beerwah
$122 million postal ballot?
My concern is not the views or positions of marriage equality, rather the sorry excuse for public opinion retrieval that is the Federal Government's planned ‘postal ballot’. It is reportedly costing $122 million to conduct. It really shows how behind Australia is. It is the 21st century! We are still conducting snail mail ballots? An online ballot would be more convenient and efficient. Those without computer skills or access should be assisted with their ballot submission at their nearest local or state government library. Huge thanks
Thanks to the person who took my bag into Aldi on August 1, I didn’t realise the bag had been dropped in the carpark by the railway line until a police officer arrived at my new house in Beerwah with the bag! Heartfelt thank you
Before 9am on Friday July 28, just outside a busy school sports day at Skippy Park on Old Landsborough Road, I was involved in a car accident. Thankfully no one was seriously injured. While these were the scariest moments of my life, and still now it plays on my mind along with all the raw emotions of the day and the continuing physical pain from the accident, there was also something else, and the reason for my letter. During everything that had unfolded that morning when I reflect on it there was something, strange as it sounds, pleasant to see going on all around me in the middle of that mess (to my recollection) – it was a real sense of admirable community care. What I remember is how everyone who was able to, came over to assist, as I watched people assisting both parties from each vehicle myself included, directing traffic, an off duty police officer organising, a volunteer firefighter looking over the leaking car, emergency assistance being called, and also the few that knew me phoned my work and advised them of what had happened, which enabled them to send someone to me. It was really impressive to see how our community came together to assist others in need, make the area safe, get emergency assistance and inform people that needed to know. I would like to sincerely thank everyone who assisted on that day. I’m touched by the compassion shown,
grateful for the phone calls to the gym on my behalf, and I’m especially thankful to Alison who comforted me until medical help turned up, even though I know she had somewhere else to be – you’re a truly beautiful person. A big shout out to the All In One Fitness Centre team for being there for me on the day and every day after. Melissa Beerwah

A Call to Arms
Lisa Plucknett recently shared her poem ‘Jam Jars in the Garden’ in response the closure of bank branches in Maleny, suggesting that locals may need to resort to keeping their money, buried in jars in their backyard. This week she has shared a follow up poem. We’ll have a National ‘Dig Fest Day’. Bring shovels, picks and spades; Oh – watch those bank chiefs tremble, As we storm the barricades. With spades we’ll march down Maple Street Eureka’s flag a-flutter; The lion shall flex his claws and roar, Instead of feeble mutters. (Stand up – Fellow Nutters – Let us show which side our bread is buttered) We’ll rally to a marching song, “Matilda” – “Marsellaise”; The day they close their banking doors, We’ll make them rue the day. We’ll fight them in the trenches, From our cottages and farms; We’ll bury our deposits, Come – Heed my Call to Arms.

Contributed by Michelle Lenz Students from Mooloolah State School recently visited the University of the Sunshine Coast for the Voices on the Coast Literature Festival. The annual event invites young writers and illustrators to come and marvel at the works of well-known authors and illustrators through a range of workshops and talks. They are also given opportunities to buy books and have them signed. The students from Mooloolah State School enjoyed a workshop and two talks whilst at the festival, which we hope will inspire them in their writing. They had the opportunity to learn about some drawing styles, writing styles and some general handy tips that will help inspire their story telling. An idea for a story can pop up at any time. Who knows, maybe one of the lucky students will become a top selling author in years to come and will remember their time at the festival, back where it all began.

Tracy King and her team are here to advise and assist you in legal areas relevant to Seniors including estate planning, estate administration, Wills, Enduring Powers of Attorney, Advance Health Directives and entry and exit into retirement villages. We are a general practice and therefore we cover most areas of the law for you. We are ‘Your Lawyers For Life’.
Wills To ensure that the administration for your estate is as easy as possible for your loved ones we strongly recommend that a qualified solicitor draft your Will for you. Unfortunately, the courts are full of matters which are being litigated purely because a ‘home-made Will’ cannot be interpreted sensibly, has various interpretations or has not adequately considered all matters required. A well drafted Will also takes into account matters other than assets within the estate, such as superannuation and life insurance, to ensure that all of your assets are dealt with consistently. Importantly, a general discussion with us about the nature and extent of your assets and liabilities and our advice to you in that regard, can save your executors a great deal of time, money and stress.

Enduring Power of Attorney It is our opinion that everyone must have an Enduring Power of Attorney. In some respects, it is more important than a Will, as without one you may be left in a state of legal limbo with no-one able to legally look after your financial affairs or make health decisions for you. This, unfortunately, regularly happens to people who do not have an Enduring Power of Attorney and who find themselves in hospital but are assessed as not being able to return home. If they are incapable of making an Enduring Power of Attorney then an Application needs to be made through QCAT to

An innovative method of care for those living with dementia
Embracia in Woodford has a ‘personfirst’ philosophy of care with a genuine commitment to ageing in place. Residents are cared for at every stage of the ageing journey in an environment that maintains independence, dignity and a sense of purpose and wellbeing. For residents living with dementia, Embracia is striving to make a positive difference by adopting an innovative method of rehabilitative care through the Montessori Approach. Montessori focuses on what people can do, rather than what they can’t do and that is the key to its success. In dementiafriendly homes this is achieved by preparing the environment to suit the purpose and the people who live there, understanding each person’s unique abilities, needs and interests and encouraging learning and developing of each person’s strengths. The goal is to support and encourage each person to live more independently and with purpose. Environments are carefully created within memory support households that support the cognitive loss associated with dementia. As a leading dementia care provider, Embracia’s unique approach connects families and older people. Working collaboratively, a program of meaningful activities and roles to suit each person is individually developed. These activities are designed to help each person maintain, or in some instances regain, some ability to carry out simple tasks. This approach is a philosophy of care that focuses on the ‘doing’ and is meaningful to the individual. Montessori has demonstrated success in improving people’s self esteem and giving a sense of belonging to a supportive community. The education sessions will cover a series of topics, including ‘Dementia – know the facts’, ‘Family Carer Course’, ‘Living with Memory Loss’, ‘Considering Residential Care’ and ‘Living with Change’, for family or friends wanting to find out more information about caring for someone with dementia. Barbara Cunningham, Senior Dementia Advisor from Alzheimer’s Australia (Qld), says that the aim of these education sessions is to support the community. “Attending these workshops could help you get a better understanding of dementia and develop effective strategies either for yourself or to support a loved one,” said Barbara. Are your dentures causing trouble?? Problem dentures can cause lots of discomfort and may seriously impact your quality of life. Poor dentures may cause: • Lost smile • Pain and discomfort • Poor chewing efficiency • Lost confidence Note the vastly improved appearance of this patient who had new dentures fitted recently at Beerwah Denture Clinic.
Good dentures result in: • Improved confidence • Improved smile • Improved comfort • Improved appearance Brian Stuart-Nairne is your dental prosthetist at Beerwah. A Hinterland local, he and his family have lived on the Sunshine Coast for over 40 years. Highly experienced, Brian has been practising dental prosthetics on the Coast for over 35 years and is a qualified BPS provider which is the most
advanced denture system available today. He also brings over 30 years’ experience in implant dentistry to the practice. Dentures need regular maintenance and yearly checks are advisable. Full dentures usually require relining at 3 - 4 years, and replacement at 7- 8 years. There are a number of reasons for this. Firstly, the bone supporting the teeth shrinks at a very slow rate continually after teeth are extracted. The upper jaw shrinks upwards and the lower jaw shrinks downwards. This causes the space between the two jaws to increase and then the lower jaw needs to rise further up to make the teeth meet to chew (called ‘over-closure’). To make matters worse, the denture teeth wear and this increases the distance further and consequently causes more over-closure. The result is loose dentures, food under the denture, ulcers, the loss of a pleasant smile, a ‘no tooth’ look, eating difficulties, increased facial wrinkles and sometimes joint pain and dysfunction. Regular obligation free checks with Beerwah Denture Clinic can avoid these problems and correct any necessary problems as they arise. The Beerwah Denture Clinic provides the latest, most advanced dentures available today. They also provide both metal and plastic partial dentures including hidden clasps, mouthguards, relines and fast repairs. Some full dentures, especially full lower dentures, may cause great discomfort and very poor chewing ability due to bone loss over time. This bone loss results in severe denture instability and poor function and increasing discomfort. The solution is to place two implants and retainers and the denture clips to these. The denture can still be removed for cleaning but is reassuringly stable during daily function. This economical implant process is a relatively painless procedure and can be performed in Beerwah to provide vastly improved comfort and function for the denture wearer.
For those wanting to say goodbye to removable dentures—fully fixed appliances are available. Brian is part of an experienced team that can offer fixed implant retained appliances that can do away with dentures completely! This option usually suits those who have suffered advanced bone loss, find wearing a denture difficult to tolerate or just want to get rid of their dentures forever. An additional advantage is that it also leaves the roof of the mouth uncovered to allow feeling temperature and sensing taste better. The team at Beerwah Denture Clinic will first need to assess the bone condition and suitability in order for the implants to be effective, so call the clinic to book an appointment. Their new clinic at Beerwah is fitted with the latest equipment and an in-house dental laboratory to provide you with the best available dental care in the shortest possible time.

View Club model members By Lea Parkes Following on from the recent View Club Fashion Parade I caught up with the compere of the event Jo Rosenlund from Icon Boutique at the Beerwah Marketplace. Jo said she had really enjoyed the day and that the models, who varied in age and were mostly 50 plus (special thanks to View Club member Joy Joyce who managed to entice her non-senior daughter Rebecca to volunteer as a model as well), all did a marvellous job on the day.

Jo was really pleased that the ladies agreed to wear outfits that were not necessarily their normal choices, and they looked great in them and did a wonderful job showcasing the range of smart casual styles the shop carries. Jo explains that with fashion it is important to dress the whole person from head to toe for your individual shape and to use a bit of common sense in making your choices. Not all of us are the same size on the top and bottom so you need to choose outfits to accentuate your positives and disguise the areas that you are not so happy with. “In the parade some of the ladies liked the shorter dresses, but didn’t like their knees to be seen so she recommended a light weight legging to go under the dresses” Jo said. For ladies who don’t like to expose their upper arms Jo chose tops with a short sleeve or short wraps to go over sleeveless outfits. Jo and business owner Margeret like to chat to the clients individually and get an understanding of their client and their needs. Jo said it is important to talk to customers and work with them to create outfits that look great, suit their budget and can work in with other items in their wardrobe. With the warmer weather already here, if you are looking for something new, or you have an event that you are going to, drop in and see Jo and Margaret and let them take the stress out of clothes shopping.

Changes to consumer protection laws for retirees The State Government will increase consumer protections for Queensland seniors in retirement, when they introduce new laws into Parliament focusing on retirement villages and manufactured homes. Minister for Housing and Public Works Mick de Brenni said the proposed changes would make a significant difference to Queensland seniors looking at retirement options. “These news laws will provide broad ranging, enforceable powers to ensure fairness across the retirement living sectors,” Mr de Brenni said. “For too long residents of some retirement villages have felt powerless. We owe our older generation better than that. This is about making sure that everyone is treated fairly, giving seniors support when they are planning retirement, and after they retire.” Proposed changes to the Retirement Villages Act 1999 include: • enabling simplified, standard contracts, • requiring ongoing fees and charges to be clearly declared upfront, • introducing a minimum 21 days to evaluate the contract before signing, • limiting the time for payment of a resident’s exit entitlement • making unit reinstatement arrangements before resale fairer, • improving dispute resolution, and • introducing enforceable behaviour standards for village operators and residents. Mr de Brenni said the proposed amendments to the Manufactured Homes (Residential Parks) Act 2003 included strengthening laws controlling rent increases.
“This will provide peace of mind and stability for the residents of manufactured home parks, many of whom are aged over 50 and on pensions,” he said. “Site rent increases will be limited to once a year and home owners will be consulted before increases are put in place. “We are also proposing amendments to make the legislation easier to understand, such as making it clearer that separate utility meter reading charges are not allowed. “Another significant change proposed in the legislation is introducing behavioral standards which focus on how park owners, their staff and residents interact. “It is designed to safeguard quality of life for everyone in residential parks.” Mr de Brenni said the government was also committed to taking on board and implementing good ideas from residents and home owners about how to improve things. “We’ve set aside $1 million over two years to provide advocacy and support through resident associations to assist retirement village residents, manufactured home owners and residents of boarding houses. “The funding will be used to develop, in consultation with resident groups, practical improvements, such as identifying what training may be required for village staff or how best to organise resident committees.” The amendments to the Retirement Villages Act 1999 and Manufactured Homes (Residential Parks) Act 2003 form part of the Queensland Housing Strategy 2017-2027 released earlier this year.

Belladiva to wow
The next Sunshine Melodies to be held at the Caloundra Events Centre will be on Wednesday, September 20 at 11am when the four stunning individual voices of Belladiva will come together to perform intricate arrangements of best-loved classics from opera to pop. This unique combination of classical voice and playful musicianship makes the familiar new again with gorgeous modern interpretations of everything from the Flower Duet to Blackbird. Think beautiful, soaring and ethereal one minute, intimate, tender and sweet the next. This quartet delivers with a delightful ease and sincerity, creating a truly enthralling and heart-warming experience. This concert brings together the singers of Belladiva to share re-imagined operatic classics and a selection of pop music’s landmark songs from Eva Cassidy and Neil Young through to Fleetwood Mac and Bruce Springsteen. Belladiva sets aside the opera score to perform these tales of strength of love in their signature crossover style and angelic four-part harmony, as previously celebrated in their renditions of Hallelujah and Fields of Gold. The girls will also perform with their own instruments, including piano, violin and guitar, in this intimate concert of songs that have sound-tracked their lives. Tickets are $19 or $17.50 per person for a group of 10 plus, and that includes a complimentary morning tea from 10am. Please contact the Box Office on 5491 4240 for bookings. GC&M News has two free double passes to give away, so keep your eye out for our competition in early September.

Glasshouse Mountains Advanced Network What wattle is what? Wattles, or Acacias, form the largest family of native flora in Australia, including more than 600 species. Our national floral emblem is Acacia pycnantha, and Wattle Day is celebrated on September 1 each year. Wattles grow naturally in most parts of the country, from the rainforests of Tasmania to the Snowy Mountains, and across the parched deserts of central Australia. The name Acacia comes from the Greek word for ‘thorny’, referring to the spiky forms of many species in the most inhospitable locations. However, wattles come in a variety of forms, including feathery foliaged shrubs and soft low groundcovers. In the Glass House Mountains region, there are at least seven shrub species, and two wattles which grow to large trees. Wattles are often used as pioneer plants in new plantings, as they are fast growing and their roots have rhizobium nodules which fix atmospheric nitrogen. The contribution of nitrogen to soil aids the growth of surrounding seedlings. Wattles are also used for soil and sand stabilisation, for erosion control and as windbreaks. Wattles are, however, relatively short-lived and prone to pests and diseases such as borers and gall fungus. Aboriginal Australians have used Acacia seeds for food, eating them roasted or ground to a flour and cooked like damper. Extracts from the bark or leaves were used for medicinal purposes, treating colds, toothache, wounds and burns. The wood was used to make clubs, spears and boomerangs, and to this day is used to make furniture. Do you have an hour or two a month to spare? Would you like to learn more about the flora and fauna in your area, and meet new friends? Contact lenses and blister packs are now something you can add to your list of items that you can recycle, thanks to a partnership between Bausch + Lomb Australia and recycling pioneers TerraCycle. The program has just launched offering Australians the opportunity to recycle any brand of used contact lenses and blister packs for free. Bausch + Lomb are calling on anyone who wears contact lenses to sign up to the program and help divert their lenses and blister packs from landfill. Users simply need to sign up to the program, collect their used contact lenses and blister packs in any box, download a prepaid shipping label from the TerraCycle website, attach it to the box, and drop off their package at any Australia Post outlet. The used contact lenses and blister packs collected by TerraCycle will be recycled into sustainable products and materials. The recycling program also gives back by making a $1 donation to Optometry Giving Sight for every kilogram of accepted waste sent through the program. Optometry Giving Sight is a global organisation helping to prevent blindness and impaired vision around the world. As part of the recycling process, the contact lenses and blister packs are separated by composition and cleaned. The metal layers of the blister packs are recycled separately, while the contact lenses and plastic blister pack components are melted into plastic that can be remolded to make recycled products. TerraCycle is the world leader in developing solutions for recycling ‘unrecyclable’ items and has kept more than 2.6 billion pieces of waste from landfills around the world. TerraCycle Australia is also tackling other difficult to recycle waste streams like used beauty products, oral care waste such as used toothbrushes, toothpaste tubes and floss containers, snack wrappers and cigarette butts. The collected waste is reused, upcycled or recycled into a variety of affordable, sustainable consumer products and industrial applications. Beauty& Beauty&Wellbeing Wellbeing Clinical trial for rapid detection of the flu
With the flu season in full swing this winter, the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Clinical Trials Centre is working with doctors in three locations including Morayfield to conduct a trial of a new rapid detection device for influenza A and B. The product, known as the ellume:lab Flu A+B Test, includes a tool for taking a nasal sample, an eStick to detect flu antigens in the sample, and a phone-sized analysis unit. USC Clinical Trials Centre Director Lucas Litewka said the device was designed to promote early diagnosis of the treatable infectious illness in a point-of-care setting, such as a clinic. Mr Litewka said faster diagnosis of influenza at the point-of-care could reduce related complications, unnecessary antibiotic prescriptions, hospital stays and healthcare costs. “It is hoped that in the future, this new device may provide a non-invasive, easy-to-use and rapid test that can detect influenza A and B during a regular doctor visit, with results obtained in less than 10 minutes,” he said.
Acupuncture
Jeans for Genes Day
“This could greatly assist people at high risk of influenza complications, because they can be treated with inhibitors within 48 hours of infection to reduce the severity of symptoms and duration of illness.” He said the ellume sampler was a more comfortable method of nasal collection for the patient than the usual swab, and could be taken by the patient or the healthcare practitioner. The eStick used an immunofluorescence technology to detect flu antigens. “People aged over one who have experienced flu-like symptoms within the last three days are being sought to take part in the trial.” Mr Litewka said adults who met the criteria would be asked to do a self-test using the new device, and provide one throat swab. Patients interested in participating can go to www.usc.edu.au/trials or call 5456 3797.

Recently the Mooloolah State School student leaders and school community decided to give back to others in need by supporting the Children’s Medical Institute’s annual ‘Jeans for Genes’ Day. The goal of the event is to raise money, so scientists can discover treatments and cures for childhood diseases and illnesses. The student leaders sold merchandise to students, families and community members before and after school and organised a whole school event to wear denim to school for a gold coin donation. The students and staff generously supported the cause and the small school raised over $360 in a week for the cause. Good Health Cold and flu season has officially started
With Billie from BL Natural Health Did you know that children usually get 5-10 colds per year and adults 2-4? A strong immune system lowers the risk of catching a cold or flu. Many daily issues, such as stress, poor diet and lack of sleep can weaken your immune response. I can design a tailored supplement program for you to strengthen your immune system as well as your body. If you catch the cold or flu however, a personalised herbal tincture will help you to get rid of your sore throat, cough etc. quicker. Did your grandmother make soup when you were sick? Chicken soup is a popular folk remedy for many reasons. It provides you with hydration and anti-inflammatory properties. Chicken is also high in cysteine which will help you clear any mucus. If you make your own chicken stock, you will add gelatin to your soup which is beneficial for your gut health and thus immune system. Recipes can be found on my website www.blnaturalhealth.com.au.
Homeopathy for autism spectrum disorders With Leisa Rocker, B Balanced Homeopathy
When mums and dads bring their children in with conditions of autism, it can be quite the day for all concerned. Children will usually exhibit forms of hyperactivity, mutism, they cannot be looked at, and may be fixed on ‘a thing’. They do not like new things or routines, food, places or people. These are only a few symptoms. Their high sensory perceptions can make it difficult to make changes of foods, or medications (which are very individualised). Homeopathic management can assist in reducing the heightened level of ‘melt downs’, whilst supporting their constitution. In the management of this condition, diet is always a factor to embark on – and environmental stimuli, stressors and family dynamics are all included. This is a combined effort with other modalities as well. With homeopathic medicines, generally there are no contraindications with taking the preparation with other prescribed medications. A consultation consists of history, likes, adversities, social, when, before pregnancy, during pregnancy, behaviours, tantrums, all sensory as per individual. Besides homeopathic management for the children, parents too need support. For enquiries, please call Leisa Rocker 0403 267 963 or visit www.bb6.com.au.

In theGarden Using mushroom compost
Most garden soils tend to be critically low in organic matter content (or humus). This is just a natural tendency as the organic matter is not replaced as quickly as it breaks down, especially in our warm, moist and humid summers. One great way to introduce organic matter back into your soils is to use mushroom compost. This is actually the exhausted growing media used to cultivate commercial mushrooms. In reality, it’s not totally spent, just that it doesn’t produce mushrooms in commercial quantities – but it will still sprout mushrooms for you. And it’s not actually ‘compost’ in the sense of being composted. It’s just straw and other materials that are aged. Now mushrooms need certain nutrients and pH, and need to be protected from diseases... so buying organic matter as spent mushroom compost doesn’t mean you are buying an ‘organic’ (ie no chemicals) product. So just be aware, if that’s a consideration for you. If you’ve got a big garden, buying mushroom compost in bulk from a local landscaping supplier is probably the way to go, rather than bags. But if you’ve got a small garden, you can buy it in the growing bags from outside mushroom farms or as commercially bagged products (Searles have a good one). Before you spread it about, it’s a good idea to test the pH as it will vary depending on where it’s come from... you don’t want to put that alkaline compost onto your prize camellias. Adjust it using dolomite or lime (to increase the pH) or iron chelates to lower it to closer to pH 7. Studies have shown that the level of nitrogen is fairly low in mushroom compost, so if you’re adding it to a productive garden, be aware that you will experience what is called ‘nitrogen drawdown’, where the decomposing organic matter will actually use the nitrogen in the soil, possibly making your soil nitrogen poor. So it’s a good idea to spread about some blood and bone to counter this problem. Blood and bone is best as it is a slower release form of nitrogen. The fine nature of the material – and the fact that it’s been aged – means that it will break down quicker than say sugar cane mulch. This is good for quickly increasing the organic matter of garden beds, but means that it will need to be topped up more frequently. A good idea is to use the mushroom compost underneath other materials – like sugarcane mulch in a veggie garden or bark and chip in an ornamental garden. Another advantage is that it will be weed free – no nutgrass, no cobblers pegs, no weird vines. You may remember when Jade King used to write a column ‘Get Up and Grow with Jade’ – she used mushroom compost in her ‘lasagne layering’ garden bed construction technique. You can read her column from October 1, 2014 in the archives section of our website – www.gcnews.com.au/ Readme.aspx?pid=377.

A brief break
With Spencer and Karen Shaw Forest Heart nursery will be closed for a brief break from August 8 to 31 for a small holiday (hopefully well deserved) and renovations to help celebrate our second anniversary of operations at Coral Street, Maleny. New to Forest Heart in spring will be our shade house for ferns, orchids and other shade lovers and also an expanded shop floor for revegetation and gardening supplies and equipment. After two years, we have much to celebrate with an increasing range of great local native plants, cultivar natives and fruit trees. For us it’s great to see so many landholders from the smallest to largest blocks using local native plants and wanting to learn more with our great range of books and also providing homes for native animals with the Hollow Log Homes nest boxes. From the churches We know there are times when we need forgiveness and times when we need to offer forgiveness. Trouble is, forgiveness can mean different things to different people. The Bible says “Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” Christians are encouraged to forgive as God forgives us. That’s the secret to healthy forgiveness – to ask how does God forgive and reflect that in our lives when we need to forgive others. One thing God does not do is pretend that there is no hurt or pain or wrong done – as a matter of fact the opposite is true. God acknowledges that something is not right. And that is the first step we need to take in granting forgiveness – acknowledge that something has happened which should not have happened. Sometimes people pretend that they are not hurt or that no evil has been perpetrated against them. And they use the excuse of forgiveness as pretence not to face up to the pain and the hurt. Glasshouse Country businesses working in the tourism industry are invited to team up with a joint display at the Street Party in Beerwah on Friday October 20. Visit Sunshine Coast has set our region the challenge of being ‘tourist ready’ when the Sunshine Coast Airport accepts international flights in 2020. To capitalise on this opportunity and maintain our unique environment will take team work. So, if you are involved in accommodation, food, outdoor activities, services, tours, amusements or any other roles in the tourism field, please join in and show the Street Party visitors what Glasshouse Country tourism has to offer. We hope that a fun evening will be had by all involved, and this will kick start a team approach to supporting tourism activities in our region. Express your interest via email to info@ celebrateGC.com.au or ring and leave a message on 0408 445 988.
CONDITIONS: To ensure all community notices can be printed each month please keep your contributions to a maximum of 100 words.
Chris Johnson Glasshouse Country Baptist Church God does not do that – neither should we. The second thing God did is that he dealt with the issue. God sent the Lord Jesus to pay the penalty for the sins, offences and the evil we have committed against God and our fellow man. God did not pretend that we were good and perfect. God faced up to those things we had done wrong and dealt with them. So forgiveness in our lives can only be truly given when all of us acknowledge and deal with the wrongs we have done. Thirdly, God stands ready to forgive. All that we need to do is own our responsibility and ask for forgiveness and God will forgive us. The tragedy is some people will never ask for forgiveness. That’s where the pain takes place. Just as some people refuse to ask God for forgiveness, there will be some who will never own what their sin and their actions have done to us. However, like God, we must stand ready to forgive. That may make the pain even more painful and the hurt and the grief more profound for we are grieving for the hope of a restored relationship. Finally we have to trust that one day God will right all wrongs. Including the ones that have been done against us – but also all the wrongs we have done against others. That’s why ultimately we need God’s forgiveness.

Water & Tank Services Clean, healthy water is our most precious resource. Pristine Water Systems operators, Simon Lacey and Allen Pitcher, are committed to providing you and your family with high quality water free of contaminants. Rainwater quality is affected as soon as it hits our roof. Water passes through guttering, pipes, tanks, filters and taps before we use it. There are potential contaminants at every stage. It is therefore vital to plan and maintain the system as a whole. This includes maintaining the cleanliness of your roof, gutters and pipe-work, as well as maintaining the cleanliness of your tank. Pristine Water Systems has developed a unique process called Quadclean that leaves your tank water totally cleansed, sanitised, aerated and invigorated, wasting very little water in doing so. This process involves testing the water; vacuuming off sediment and sludge; filtering the water and using an oxygenating process to kill harmful bacteria. Cleaning and sanitising your tank now will prevent problems occurring later with settled sludge on the bottom of your tank contaminating your fresh rainwater. For more information about ensuring your access to pristine water, call Simon on 0411 774 767 (Glass House Mountains area, Caloundra-Kilcoy) or Allen on 0404 302 723 (Glenview, Landsborough, Maleny Hinterland). See www.pristinewater.com.au for more details.

Sport Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker
There were several interesting games played by club members over the week. The highlights were to be found in the closely fought Bray fixture against Headland Buderim. Our team consisted of Sarah Widin, Kath Smith and Robert Elliot. Rising star Sarah won her game against Martin Atkins 16-11, Kath was unlucky to lose to Garry Shaw 10-11 after the bell and the decider, the doubles, played by Sarah and Robert was also lost 10-11 after the bell. Bad luck, but well done to that team. Beautiful weather was the order of the day for all games except on Sunday, when a doubles game which pitted Nick Cram and Hazel Kretschmer against Helen Anderson and Ken Barker was cut short with the scores 14-2 in favour of Nick and Hazel. Nick formed a well-controlled 9 break to start the game and Ken and Helen never managed to recover the initiative because of good play from both Nick and Hazel. It would be churlish to say that the weather saved them. On Thursday, Kath Smith and Hazel Kretschmer 5 played a tight game to defeat Donna Manning 2. Vince Carbery and Ken Barker played to an impasse with only one decent break. The final score was Ken 8 and Vince 3. For further information, contact Vince Carbery on 5494 2193 (President), or Priscilla Vickers on 5494 3555 (Secretary).
Super Strawberry Round 6
Beerwah Golf Club
Still waiting for strawberry season
Men and Medley Results
Congratulations to G & G Chessa from Glasshouse Mountains who won both sections of the Super Strawberry Competition, Round 6. The ‘biggest’ weighed 56 grams, and an entry likened to ‘a tulip’ won the most unusual category (see photo). The story goes that the season is to blame for the lack of weight in this year’s entries, but it has to be mentioned that in this famous strawberry growing district, the specimens we are seeing in the 2017 comp are SHRINKING! There are still two rounds to go in the Super Strawberry Competition, before the champions are announced at the Beerwah Charity Sports on Saturday, August 26. Can anyone do better, and help retrieve the reputation of the Glasshouse Country strawberry industry? Round 7 is now open, and closes on Friday, August 18 at 4.00pm. Remember, you can bring in entries at any time during the week to the Coochin Creek Co-op in Beerwah. Ask for our steward, Heather, and she will weigh and record your entries. The winner of the biggest category each week receives a six-pack from Beerwah Hotel; and there are bottles of wine coming for the most unusual winners.
Bulldogs quest for 2017 premiership
Witta Tennis Contributed by Pauline Fraley
Maleny Magics were the winners on the day, but Witta Wagtails put up a good fight which meant some long games, deuces, etc. A fun day of tennis. Thanks to Gerry, Suzie, Claire and Sonia. Whistlers played at Witta against Caloundra Hot Chillies. It was beautiful weather, no wind and warm, it was a perfect for tennis. We lost the first 2 sets, but fought back hard. Every set was so close with great games played. We just managed to bring home the win, it was an exhausting day! Score was 37-33 games, 4 sets each. Team was Donna Kuskopf, Aki Lepper, Brenda Warner and thanks for filling in Stacey English. The Wildcats were away to Nambas Champers. Unfortunately Jupiter and Mercury were aligned with a different universe. Pauline, Annie, Libby and Anne did their best but didn’t bring it home. Next week! A convincing win for the Wompoos against the Nambas Kitty Kats at Nambour Showgrounds courts on Sunday. The team was in front all day and finished with a 10 sets to 2 sets victory, it was a very solid performance by everyone. In the car on to way to Nambour to play the Nigglers, we tried to discuss tactics. That lasted for almost 5 seconds and we continued having a go at Hot Kev as on account of a serious case of man flu, he was unable to leave his bed. So our very capable 4th man, Stacey owned the role. A very competitive match, nothing in it, just like crazy tweeter account but without the fire and fury. Believe us, the world may have seen better tennis on occasions, but we all had a great sweaty lung busting day. All even going into the last 4 sets, but we managed to get there in the end. Thanks to Glenno, Mike, Ando, Stace, Maree and Paulina.
Contributed by Mark Brandon, Head Coach
The Beerwah Division 2 Senior Men’s team have wrapped up their regular season in third position, 2 points behind Mary Valley and 1 point behind Kawana. Unfortunately in the first round game against Bribie Island, the game was deemed a draw as there was an injury to an opposition player, and the game was called off at half time. As we were leading 22-0, we were denied 2 competition points and the minor premiership and also a week off going into the playoffs. However we moved on and have lost only 1 game in our last 10 hit outs. The team takes on Coolum Colts this Sunday at Caloundra at 1.50pm in a knockout semi-final. We have played them twice this year for 2 wins, with a close 1412 win two weeks ago in the regular competition. We hold the utmost respect for them and know that we are in for a torrid game. Daniel Kidd, (DK) who took over the captaincy this year has lead the team with strong leadership qualities, which has inspired the team to turn up each week and perform. Dan has also had some painful injuries with rib damage and a crippling ankle injury with both injuries keeping him on the sideline for a few weeks. Due to a train wreck of injuries to the squad this year, I have had to call on a group of the clubs under 18s including Matty Kidd, Aiden Young and Sam Humphries, and they have all stood up and handled senior footy with no fear and brought an X factor to the playing group. Nathan Robards has, for the 2nd year in a row, topped the try scoring list with 26 touchdowns to his name, and is the best winger in the 12 team competition. So it's a new comp now going into the playoffs. Hopefully we can get the job done and go deep into the playoffs and one more step closer to the Grand Final.
Contributed by Roger Bonhomme The big-hitting duo of Greg Wicks / Mick Warry birdied the last two holes to win the Men’s Foursomes Championship on Saturday. They finished the 27-hole event on 113 to lead home Dan O’Connor / Craig Farr by three shots. Nett winners were Barry Gardner/Roger Bonhomme on 111, a mere half shot ahead of Les Hatchman/Rob Cork. Interestingly, Barry also won the nett event (with Andrea Campbell) in July’s Mixed Foursomes Championship. What a partner! NTPs: 2 - Penney/ Williamson, 5 and 16 - Maw / Betts, 18 - O’Connor/ Farr, 20 - Wills/Adamson. The club’s Medley Stroke event on Wednesday saw some very close results. The perpetual practicer Doug Young won A Grade on a countback from Geoff Griggs who shot nett 70. B Grade was also decided on countback with Wayne Burnett (70) heading Rob Reid. In C Grade John Baggaley 69 beat Marion Thomas by a stroke. NTPs: 2 - Peter Purvis, 5 Wayne Lewis, 16 - Jason Voros, 18 - Pete Kiraly. Col Penney has won the Club’s Senior and Veterans’ Championship for the fourth year in a row – what a great effort. The event was held over two rounds of stroke play. A Grade nett winner is Cam Reid. In B Grade, the champion is Bill James with Peter Chapman winning the nett. Peter Fisher and Col Baker took the gross and nett honours in C Grade respectively. In the ladies division, Mavis Brimelow is our champion for 2017 with Heather Coyle winning the nett prize.

Our Senior Women’s team registered their sixth win in a row at home to third placed Noosa on Friday. This result cements them in second place and confirms that they will play finals football. Sylvie Bissinger scoring the only goal of the game in the first half against a well organised Noosa team who could not break the solid home defence. It was a great weekend for our Senior teams, our Premier Men’s Reserves beating Kawana away from home 3-2. This score line was repeated in the Premier Men’s game, our boys came home strong against second placed Kawana thanks to Jacob Fullock’s hat trick. The winner, coming against the run of play two minutes from time, sent the Bee Gees supporters into wild scenes of jubilation knowing their team have great form leading into the finals. This weekend is the final round for all teams. Our Women travel to Maleny on Friday and our Premier Men’s are home to NYU. Large crowds are expected at both venues.

Drinking is a sin
ARIES March 21 - April 20 Now you are in the middle of two Eclipses. The 22nd of this month brings a new opportunity for a creative project. A new romantic relationship may begin. Perhaps you might receive recognition for the work you have done. Whatever unfolds, the experiences will be positive. Now that Mercury has turned retrograde an old friend revisits. TAURUS April 21 - May 22 There are several new opportunities under current eclipse patterns concerning your home or family. If your home is on the market, then you may receive a solid offer. If you are house shopping you might find just the right place! Perhaps you may want to start renovations, so this is the time to find the right contractor. Clean out the garage. GEMINI May 23 - June 21 You are now in the midst of some very interesting opportunities, mainly to do with your public life and your communication abilities. Between August 12 and September 5 the planet Mercury is going retrograde in Virgo. Being in the family area of your chart it’s important to communicate clearly since delays or upsets are possible. CANCER June 22 - July 22 This week sees you backtracking as Mercury turns retrograde in Virgo which is the communication area of your chart. As this occurs in your financial area, be sure to watch any money transactions, cheques and statements. If you do have to travel your destination may be one that is delayed at the airport. Allow extra travel time to airports.
Week Beginning 16/08/17
"Then let me buy you a drink – if you still believe afterwards that it is evil I will give up drink for life." "How could I, a nun, sit outside this public house drinking?!" "I'll get the barman to put it in a teacup for you, then no-one will know." The nun reluctantly agrees, so Arthur goes inside to the bar. "Another pint for me, and a triple vodka on the rocks," then he lowers his voice and says to the barman "... and could you put the vodka in a teacup?" "Oh no! It's not that drunken nun again is it?" LEO July 23 - August 22 This may be an exciting week as the Eclipses are in your own sign. The Sun, Moon and Mars will form a very strong energy angle to the eclipse degree and Uranus. An element of surprise comes in, perhaps as a job offer, a marriage proposal, an unexpected move or an opportunity for travel at short notice. The challenge is to pick the best offer. VIRGO August 23 - September 22 This week sees you strutting your stuff! You may have an opportunity to work behind the scenes in some way, doing something you enjoy. Because Uranus, the planet of surprises, forms a beneficial angle to the Eclipse, it suggests sudden and unexpected offers. Mercury retrograde gives you time to consider projects. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 There is now the opportunity to work with a group or a team of like-minded individuals. You may have to end something in your life to make way for these new opportunities. As Mercury turns retrograde on August 12 and then direct on September 5, once again, follow the rule of the three ‘R’s. Revise, Review and Reconsider. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 You are in the middle of a series of Eclipses that present high drama, which can be frantic work or jobs to be done with a sense of urgency. Several professional opportunities may surface and as Mercury goes retrograde you need to revise contracts that have not been signed as yet. Be sure to communicate new contracts clearly at this time.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 December 22 The Aquarian Eclipse before this week was compatible with your fire sign. Then the next eclipse coming on August 22 sees many planets in signs that are compatible with yours. All these form beneficial angles to the Eclipse. With Mercury retrograde you may recheck, review and revise projects you thought were finished. Check again! CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 This week sees you in the middle of two Eclipses that trigger feelings about finances. Opportunities flow your way concerning money. Perhaps you could sell your novel or screenplay, receive a cheque or even inherit money! It is also a good week to buy lottery tickets. With Mercury retrograde, reconsider old motives. AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 You may feel that you are on a rollercoaster ride. These months’ Eclipses fall on the axis of the Aquarius/Leo signs. This means you gain perspective on big changes to your lifestyle. With Mercury turning retrograde in Virgo then back into Leo, review your resources and financial statements. Keep after those who owe you money. PISCES February 20 - March 20 This week may see the doubling up of new opportunities that surface for you in your daily work. Perhaps you may be promoted and have a chance to really shine in your workplace. There may be moves into a new building. If self-employed, you land a new project or job that thrills you. With Mercury retrograde do not sign contracts unless reviewed.

Arthur was sitting outside his local pub one day, enjoying a quiet pint and generally feeling good about himself, when a nun suddenly appears at his table and starts decrying the evils of drink. "You should be ashamed of yourself young man! Drinking is a sin! Alcohol is the blood of the devil!" Now Arthur gets pretty annoyed about this, and goes on the offensive. "How do ‘you’ know, Sister?" "My Mother Superior told me so." "But have you ever had a drink yourself? How can you be sure that what you are saying is right?" "Don't be ridiculous – of course I have never taken alcohol myself!"

Mini dental implants are becoming increasingly popular in dental care today - because of their smaller size they are often used in cases of limited bone anatomy. They can also make removable dentures more comfortable, and easier to wear. The positive outcomes of choosing mini dental implants include being minimally invasive and affordable. CHANGE OF DATESPRING FEVER POKIE DRAW
FRIDAY 18TH AUGUST
SATURDAY 19TH AUGUST
We have realised that the ‘draw date’ of our Spring Fever Pokie Promotion clashes with Fathers Day. To avoid this clash we have decided to change the date of the draw to Sunday 24th September commencing at 2.30pm. This also helps us celebrate one year since the start of our BAYBLUE REWARDS Loyalty Program. All other terms and conditions remain the same. We apologise for any inconvience this may cause. Looking forward to seeing you there!
