Mitch Gaynor WELL that’s a pretty big story (to my right), even if I’m slightly biased. The shift back to weekly (the last one was April 2020) is something we’ve been talking about for months and we are excited to say that our first ‘new weekly’ edition rolls out on September 13. It will see a change of format, which was prompted by a couple of reasons including the fact that the type of paper stock GC&M News has traditionally been printed on will not be available anymore. But the content and commitment to our community stays the same. I believe that a weekly newspaper better serves the needs of its readers. It allows us to run with issues and campaigns that matter to people in a much more timely fashion. Waiting two weeks for an update on running social pics from a two-week old event! I think we’ve done a pretty good job overcoming this, but now we don’t have to worry at all. While online and e-newsletters are certainly part of the mix, there is nothing as tangible, credible and readable as a printedRegularnewspaper.surveystell us that printed community news is not only the most trusted source of information but is seen as vital to the social fabric. That is our inspiration every day and won’t change as we take our next step forward in the 36-year history of GC&M News. Thank you to our readers and advertisers that support us and we hope you love the weekly.

It’s frustrating that we simply run out of space to give the wonderful stories of the people, places and events happening around the hinterland the coverage they deserve. Well, that’s all changing from September 13 when our first weekly edition since April 2020 rolls hot off the presses. There will be some changes including the traditional format of the newspaper. This change allows us to keep costs under control so that we can keep delivering the news that matters to our communities.Butwethink you’ll love the new look. Our commitment to community news is as strong as ever, with more of the same content that advocates, celebrates and informs our loyal readers. It means we will be able to report on and publish more timely and relevant stories and keep you up to date with key issues across the hinterland. For local groups, sporting groups and other organisations we are doubling your opportunity to tell the wider community about the fantastic things you are doing each week. There will also be more space each week to tell your stories so please keep us posted about what’s going on in your neighbourhood.Wewillbeintouch with updated schedules and deadlines in the coming weeks.TheGC&M News team is now working feverishly behind the scenes to make this all happen and we hope you enjoy the end result. One thing is for sure: there is so much good news happening that we struggle to squeeze it into a fortnightly paper.

Heritage hall’s SOS! By Sonia Isaacs AFTER decades of caring for their community run heritage hall, the aging members of the Mooloolah Public Hall executive committee plan to step down over the coming months. However, they are anxiously concerned that the community will not step up in time to take over management of the community owned asset. Long running hall secretary Bev Smith said she felt people were just too busy with other commitments these days, and there was a different expectation around local community participation in volunteer activities. This is a sentiment that is being echoed across many grassroots community-run organisations in our region. A decline in membership, aging committee members and a reluctance of younger people to step up are all seemingly a sign of our times and the changing fabric of our modern-day society, however these are trends the custodians of Mooloolah Hall are eager to challenge, but have simply just run out of stream. Bev said although more local community members had been attending recent hall meetings, and despite assurances that the hall will continue to operate, there had been no firm commitment from anyone to take over managing the hall. “We need our community to continue to breathe life into our hall through active involvement. People may not realise that our hall has been owned and operated by the people of Mooloolah for almost 120 years, and we are the oldest running community operated hall here on the coast. Our hall is not owned by Council or any government agency, it is owned entirely by the people of our town and if we don’t have an active management committee this wonderful asset will be lost,” said Bev. With the public hall AGM set for October 20, people were needed to stand up and take a position and The current executive of Mooloolah Public Hall will be stepping down at the October AGM become responsible to ensure the hall’s remains for future generations. “We like to say to our community that this is ‘your hall’ - we are merely the custodians of our community asset. It has had a wonderful history of community meetings, events, receptions, and dances over the last 100 years, and we are keen for it to continue to be an important part of our community.”Forfurther information on the management positions, the community are urged to attend any monthly hall meeting leading to the AGM (August 10, September 8, or October 13 at 4.30pm in the hall) or contact 5494 7999 or 5494 7793. mooloolahpublichallhttps://www.facebook.com/

Mr Wallace said the community will be up in arms if the Coalition Government’s $1.6 billion commitment to Sunshine Coast rail was not retained in October’s Federal Budget.

Mr Chalmers told media during a visit to Maroochydore last week, investments that are slated for communities like the Sunshine Coast, which will deliver an economic benefit for the country and for the community, will go ahead.

“It is great to hear that Mr Chalmers has made this commitment to keep projects with a genuine benefit to the country and the community,” Mr Wallace said.“This is exactly what the Sunshine Coast rail project is – it’s more than good, it’s “Sunshineessential.CoastRail will revolutionise the way we move people in southeast Queensland – busting congestion on our busiest roads and reducing the use of cars and thereby carbon emissions. “This is not an issue of party politics, it is about delivering for one of the country’s fastest growing regions.”

THE Maleny Hospital Auxiliary has received over $12,000 towards the refurbishment of its Palliative Care Rooms following the success of the recent Maleny Golf Charity Day. The sold out event was held on June 17 following a postponement due to weather.

Sunshine Coast Council Environment Interpretation Officer Jennifer Waithman said the Microeye is a way “to get up close to the different details and patterns that nature has, whether to look at leaves or the little, tiny hairs of a spider or the possum bones in there that goes with our marsupial display”. The Marsupials Beyond the Pouch display is one of the many intriguing displays and sensory activities within the Discovery Centre, and is available until December.TheMary Cairncross Reserve, located at Maleny, maintains an ecological significance, as Jennifer notes a variety of rainforest species are endemic to this particular ecosystem. The ecosystem “used to cover the Blackall Range and is now reduced, so the reserve does hold a lot of unique plants and animals,” Jennifer said. “As you walk around the rainforest it is a very magical experience, it’s not something everyone has done and having them explore nature in a different way shows the importance of having the reserve here.”

The Microeye, at a cost of around $10,000, provides a connection between what is seen in the rainforest to view and generate conversations of the detailed observation of specimens. Visitors have responded positively and volunteers who man the Discovery Centre have given their seal of approval as they passionately spread the word of the wonder of viewing specimens under precise magnification. The Sunshine Coast Council also facilitates another Microeye at the Maroochy Wetlands Sanctuary Reserve Centre at Bli Bli, where visitors can view in detail specimens from the wetlands and mangroves.

Jan Cornfoot, immediate past president of the Auxiliary, said it was a phenomenal result thanks to the generosity and support of local businesses, the golf club, players and volunteers.

Brother Charles loved sport –voluntary basis without payment. BC also coached students in high jump with many athletes coming from Brisbane in the south to Noosa in the north, and has inspired many athletes to overcome their ‘saggy butt disease’. He loved inventing things for sport like the ‘shot put returner’ and the Coach’s Eye IPAD finish line holder. BC’s generous heart inspired generations of students in the district and his knowledge, skill and good humour supported the staff within it. BC’s enormous contributions inspired Brother Charles’ big sporting heart extends beyond our district too. At a Regional School Sport level, BC has coached sports such as cross country and softball, spending the last 11 years as a Track and Field Coach – earning him a regional Silver Service award. Not only has he officiated at State Track and Field titles, but he has provided over 20 years of service to the Australian Track and Field Association and in the year 2000, BC earned the Australian Sports Medal for his service to sport. Most recently, he was awarded Life Membership at Caboolture Little Athletics Assoication and in 2019, BC was awarded Sunshine Coast School Sport Regional Life Membership. The skill, knowledge, expertise and history of the district that BC brought to all athletes and lovers of sport in our area is his legacy and is an invaluable contribution to sport. BC infused his passion and love of sport into many lives and another, perhaps more important lesson – to be kind to others. His legacy will continue to live on in the lives of the children that BC coached and in turn in the generations to come. Dana and Bec welcome first child

Dana and Bec said Iluka was proving to be a very calm baby, much like his parents, allowing a smoother transition into parenthood for the pair.

“I think because we are both such calm people, and Dana particularly, it’s probably where he’s gotten his calmness from which is good,” they said. “We’ve been pretty lucky because he’s been a pretty chill baby and we’ve been able to enjoy it.”

Bec said she had a water birth in the hospital because they tend to be more relaxing on the mother’s body during labour.Dana, who had a pretty tough upbringing, which included the loss of his father at a young age, said he was possible. “It’s pretty important to just be there for him, be a good dad and watch him grow up, and give him something I never had,” Dana said. “We are grateful that we have parents on both sides and aunties and uncles… they’ve been a good support network forIluka’sus.”

The hospital gardens are a gathering point on weekends for patient’s families and pets, with them having barbeques and strolls along the Remembrance Walk, a footpath dedicated to fallen soldiers and the hospital’s history. Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital was founded in 1921 as a tribute to the soldiers of World War I, initially a private hospital which also tended to soldiers and veterans for free. With the increasing demand for a hospital in the mountains, it eventually became public and now helps anyone in need, not just from Maleny but all the Sunshine Coast hinterland area and even Brisbane.

THE annual Spring Affair, hosted by the Maleny Hospital Auxiliary, will take place 10am on September 14 at the Maleny Show Pavilion. The fundraiser will be dedicated to refurbishing and improving the palliative care unit at the Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital. The morning tea will feature beautiful food, flowers and local Maleny fashion, as well as raffle prizes. Everyone is welcome to attend, but hurry, as tickets have already started disappearing. This is Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital’s vision for its palliative care unit. This idea is now becoming a reality with help from the Maleny Hospital AuxiliaryAuxiliaryvolunteers.president Diana Bryce has been leading fundraisers for over 10 years, with the Auxiliary’s current efforts being directed towards the refurbishment of the hospital’s palliative careWhilerooms.COVID-19 made the modernisation of these rooms take longer then desired, the efforts haven’t gone unnoticed by the patients and their families. Diana and Senior Medical Superintendent Dr Kris McQuaid said that the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with Dr McQuaid stating that he can see it in his treatment and observations of the patients. Director of Nursing and Facility Manager Karen Croker said that making the palliative care rooms feel more like a bedroom, rather then a hospital room in Maleny further helps improve the quality of life of palliative care patients, as it means they don’t have to travel to receive“Beingtreatment.closetohome, having an outlook that may remind people of home, having friends and family close by to visit more frequently and having staff that may know some of your background already, makes things more tolerable from the patient’s point of view”, Dr McQuaid said. He also emphasized how having this specialized equipment in the hinterland area helps take the pressure off the Sunshine Coast University Hospital, with them not having to divert every patient to an already highly pressured facility. This is where being a small, local hospital is beneficial, as the tight knit community provides a lot of the funds it can’t get publicly. “The Maleny Hospital Auxiliary, from my experience, certainly does a job that is far beyond what you’d expect from a small community,” Dr McQuaid said. “This community certainly has a stronger than expected love for this hospital.”

Roxanne, who has been ghostwriting nonfiction books for five years was ecstatic when her son showed an interest in becoming an author himself, sharing that Lincoln is proof that anyone can harness the power of story to make a difference in the world.

Earlier this year Lincoln was asked by his guitar teacher to prepare a story that would inspire hope for a brighter future. It was while preparing for an upcoming speaking event, where he was to share his story with over 100 people, this deep-thinking young man created a whole new world centred around Sprout, a seedling who inspired much older forest trees to work together to overcome a veil of negativity that had plagued their home.“There were so many people who came up to me and said they loved the story and how it would make a great book, so I decided to do it,” he said. Lincoln worked hard to refine the story over eight versions with the help of Sunshine Coast author Kellie Byrnes and his mum, awardwinning writing mentor Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

Sprout was then brought to life by Sydney-based illustrator Cara Ord in a process that took just under five months toLincolncomplete.said it is his hope that anyone who reads Sprout’s Idea will think about the words they speak and their actions towards others. The story of hope, teamwork, combatting negative with positive and kindness was highlighted through the main character’s interaction with the story’s villain – Shade Man. It was the latter that caught the attention of Andy Griffiths, who declared, “I love a good villain and there is no one as villainous as Shade Man.”

Lpies of Sprout’s Idea are available for pre-order at www.sproutsidea.com, with the offical launch held in August. A dollar from every copy of Sprout’s Idea will be donated to Greening Australia.

You can’t ask that... but they did By Jennifer Kent GLASS House Mountains man Steve Coleman was in his 40’s when he was diagnosed with Lewy body dementia, a common form of dementia caused by the degeneration and death of nerve cells in the brain. Steve has been a staunch advocate for Dementia Australia for almost a decade and, among other things, runs a local support group for people living with Lewy body dementia. Steve was recently involved in the ABC television show ‘You Can’t Ask That’, where he was one of several individuals interviewed with challenging, sensitive, shocking, sometimes funny and often uncomfortable questions about what it is like living with dementia. from the show, which aired on ABC last month, has been really positive. “We filmed last year, and ABC were just fabulous to work with,” Steve said of his experience in studio. “They were caring, generous, and treated everyone with respect making it a great project to be part Steve’sof.”favourite question posed –“When did you realise you were losing yourAccordingmarbles?”toDementia Australia’s website, dementia is the leading cause of death for Australian women and the second leading cause of death for Australians.Passionate about raising awareness of the disease, Steve shared one of the most common misconceptions about the disease is that it can strike at any age. “A lot of people think it’s ‘a disease of the elderly’, but that simply isn’t true. People have an idea of what it looks like and expect it to look, or be, a certain way, but in reality there’s early, mid and late stages and it’s different for everyone,” he explained. “Everyone has a different journey and it’s important that people realise that there is help and support out there and you can live with it.” For individuals and family members going through a diagnosis of dementia–which Steve says can commonly take 2-3 years to be formally diagnosed – he advised to be pro-active and do your research, look for support groups and ask as many questions of your doctors and specialists as you can. “We have in the pipeline Emergency Services Day on the 8th October, which was held back in 2019 involving all emergency services vehicles where the kids can go into. We also have planned for the 3rd December a Family Outdoor Cinema Night and food trucks.”

The event was put on by the Mooloolah Valley Community Association Inc and sponsored by the Sunshine Coast Council Minor Grants Scheme. Event officer Jason Carroll said “Mooloolah is crying out for events that are family friendly and free and with support from the Sunshine Coast Council Grants Scheme and the Community Association we can put on an event like this and many more!”

After several disruptions to many community events since the beginning of the pandemic, three local Primary Schools’ Parents Associations have joined forces in the spirit of cooperation and mutual support to re-imagine a Country Fair for everyone, from the young to the young at heart. School and The River School have come together to put on a stellar Country Fair at the Maleny State School on Friday, September 9 from 3.30pm. will see Maleny State School’s main oval transformed into a traditional ‘Village Green’ filled with stalls offering fresh food and favourite homemade treats, assorted games, a licensed bar, sideshow rides and other great attractions such as a mobile farm, fire engine, croquet and TS Centaur Naval Cadets and more. There’ll also be a packed entertainment program featuring local community groups, school bands, choirs, dance groups and associated professional performers. This year, the event will go cashless for the games, food and beverage stalls, with a common pricing structure across all stalls. Stall tickets can be purchased by cash, card and mobile device on the day in ‘the shed’, or can be prepurchased online and collected at the gate on the day, for use throughout the To learn more about this free community event and to pre-purchase

By Sonia Isaacs ISAAC Hudson Burgess (1834-1905) was one of the first pioneers to settle in the Blackall Range region. Despite illiteracy and relatively humble beginnings, this intriguing man went on to display an entrepreneurial mindset that saw him own over 1,400 acres of land, oversee numerous business ventures, operate three accommodation houses, a two-storey hotel, store and butchers shop and become instrumental in establishing the first school in Landsborough amongst other achievements.WhileIsaacBurgess is credited as being the first selector for both Mellum Creek (Landsborough) in 1871 and the Maleny district in 1878, up until recently, relatively little was known about his life. Recently, the Burgess family have compiled a more comprehensive history that has been shared and featured on the Maleny Historical Memories website providing a fascinating insight into the man who became an important figure in the economic growth and development of the Landsborough district. We thought it would be interesting to focus on some of his local hotel ventures. Following the flushed rush of the Gympie Goldfields, and the completion of Gympie Road between Brisbane and the goldfields in September 1868 allowing the Cobb and Co coach run, Isaac Burgess decided that Mellum Creek presented a fantastic opportunity to establish a business supplying provisions to travellers travelling along Gympie Road. In 1870, Isaac, his wife Hannah and their son Samuel left the Gympie Goldfields and Isaac and Hannah Burgess, with children Samuel and Annie Image Credit: Picture Sunshine Coast. Sunshine Coast Council/State Library of Queensland headed south to Mellum Creek. In 1871, Isaac became the first selector in Mellum Creek. He applied for selection of Portion 1, Bribie parish on October 16, 1871 with his lease commencing from January 1, 1872. According to family records, this property was on the northern side of Mellum Creek and covered 128 acres. Over the course of his years in Mellum Creek (later named Landsborough) Isaac owned three accommodation houses. The first was a slab hut with a bark roof which was built on Portion 1 around 1871. This became a calling place for refreshments and a change of horses for the Cobb & Co coach en route to the Gympie goldfields; it also served as a general store. While it is uncertain what the name of this accommodation house was called, some historical accounts suggest it may have been a ‘Temperance Hotel.’ In 1877 Burgess selected Portion 19 (572 acres), again on Mellum Creek, this time on the Brisbane side. Here he erected a two-story hotel, a store, and a butcher shop. It is presumed this hotel was called the ‘Sportsman’s Arms Hotel’. On March 19, 1880 records show that Isaac applied for a publican’s licence for ‘fermented and spirituous liquors’ for the Sportsman’s Arms Hotel. Over the course of the next six years, the hotel had several licensees. In 1886, the location of the hotel was described as where ‘the main Gympie Road also passes through Mellum Creek, and where the best road to the Blackall Range cuts this road at right angles also at this spot’. By 1889, Mellum Creek was described as becoming a town of some importance. The railway line was almost completed, and a newspaper article from that year describes Isaac’s next Landsborough hotel venture the ‘Pioneer Temperance Hotel.’ A newspaper ad at the time describes the hotel as having “first class accommodation for travellers with good tables kept!” Temperance Hotel Landsborough

THE past month has been all about community, schools, and family. I’ve spent heaps of time in the Hinterland and as usual I have some fantastic events to share with the readership here.Ifyou haven’t thanked a P&C member lately, you should find time! The Beerwah State High School P&C are just delightful and put countless hours of volunteer time into making the school community a joyous place for all of They’reBeerwah.running a HUGE raffle to improve the canteen for both parents and students, and I was able to contribute a massive 55” flat screen TV as 1st prize! If you’d like to buy tickets, head into the Beerwah SHS Administration and help support this fabulous P&C drive. On the 11th of August, I was also honoured to attend the 100th Birthday Scone Festival of Queensland Country Women’s Association (QCWA), with meaningful speeches about the continuous relevance of women advocacy in Queensland and a true homage to the delicacy and deliciousness of scones. I promised I’d help spread the word Winners will receive a medallion and a local business gift voucher at a special awards night in October.

ELECTED representatives

RSVP By Monday 12th September Recognise an unsung hero GLASSHOUSE Country & Maleny News readers, I need your help to find our local champions.Nominations are now open for the fifth annual Fisher Community Awards. The awards recognise organisations and individuals who have made a difference to our community in the fields of education, employment, environment, and retirement. I launched the Fisher Community Awards to celebrate those unsung heroes in our community who are delivering on that mission through their bright ideas, hard work, and selfless service. Last year’s event, which also celebrated winners from the cancelled 2020 awards ceremony, recognised many locals, including Glasshouse Christian College student Charlie Bidgood, who was awarded Fisher Student of the Year 2021, and the Maleny and District Senior Citizens, who received the Fisher Senior Community Group 2020. So much inspirational work goes on behind the scenes, and I look forward to hearing from you in uncovering our unsung locals with admirable stories from ourPleasecommunity.visitmy website and tell me about an individual or organisation that you think deserves to win an award in any or all ten categories and why.

A delicious afternoon tea will be provided by the renowned Orangery in Maleny. The afternoon will include live music, a ra e & lucky door prizes. Bar service will also be available at this event, plus ample parking.

Ms McCabe said Aged Care Employee Day is an important opportunity to acknowledge the essential role care workers play, where despite the pandemic, they continue to provide care for some of the most vulnerable people in our “Ourcommunities.clientsoftenshare stories of inclusive and creative ways residential aged care managers and teams provide care such as regularly inviting a resident known to be a night owl to join staff when they sit down to share a pizza; another, when a care worker told us about a client smiling and reminiscing about being 16 again when she played her a favourite song or, when families were unable to visit, the staff encouraged them to send emails that they printed and gave to the residents to keep and read for themselves – the care worker involved said with one resident she knew the emails were kept, neatly folded in her handbag and often re-read,” Ms McCabe said. “We thank the aged care workforce for their professionalism, compassion, empathy, respect and the difference they make to the lives of people living with dementia, their families and carers.”

DEMENTIA Australia has launched the latest module in the Ask Annie app to enhance care workers’ knowledge of how our body language can impact a person living with dementia. The free body language module adds new content to the Ask Annie app which provides care workers with interactive, self-paced teaching modules, to refresh, strengthen and refine their skills. Dementia Australia CEO Maree McCabe AM said the new module will help care workers with positive interactions and develop trust through building their knowledge of body language and the impact body language can have. “Good communication in dementia care is critical. Being aware of our body language, how it might be interpreted and ensuring it is as positive as possible can help people living with dementia feel at ease, build trust and connect,” Ms McCabe said. Body language is physical behaviour which is used to communicate a person’s thoughts and intentions. “Facial expressions, body posture and even the personal space you provide can make all the difference to the experience of a person living with dementia during interactions in everyday settings – whether it be when eating a meal, or supporting them to have a shower,” Ms McCabe said. “We’re very pleased to offer this as gifted content, in celebration of our aged care Dementiaworkforce.”Advocate Bobby Redman, Chair, Dementia Australia Advisory Committee lives with dementia and said the app would be very useful in helping carers to be aware of their body language, which is so important, especially as language skills reduce. “It is vital to remember that our senses are impacted by dementia –vision, hearing and touch all change, and we may experience things in a very different way,” Bobby said. “Please help us to cope with these changes by using clear body language to supplement what you are saying –actions speak louder than words.”

WELLBEING

The Ask Annie app content continues to grow and the new body language module joins another four gifted modules already available. Dementia Australia is focused on adding to the educational content in Ask Annie to ensure care workers have access to new information and the opportunity to continue to expand their knowledge. Ask Annie can be downloaded for free individually via the Google Play Store or Apple App Store with free access to five modules.Thefull application with access to all modules is $60 per person per year, with multi-license packages available for organisations. Works included a new 150 metre road formalising the access to the ground keepers accommodation and storage shed, as well as extending the access to the south east of the showgrounds and around to the rear of the equestrian arena. The upgrade means the Maleny Rangers Football Club has gained ten new formal carparks and a PWD bay out the front of their club. There’s also a hard stand area to assist with parking at training and game days – I think we can all agree it’s a real win for the club and community. New pathways and roads Works will begin this week on a 155 metre long stretch of new concrete pathway along Hatten Street, Mooloolah Valley. The pathway will be 1.8 metres wide extending from the existing path at 15 Paget Street, around the corner to Hatten Street and up to Jones Street. This is a great asset for Mooloolah Valley and I am very happy that this work is to take place. The new pathway will link facilities and enable easier and safer access for all. Also, in the next few months numerous roads and streets will be resealed with either asphalt or chip seal across Division 5. Our project team will inform residents neighbouring the works and I will also provide updates via my Facebook for the wider community. Pull up a seat Next time you’re visiting Old Orchard Park Palmwoods, rest your legs on the new picnic setting! The weathered and damaged setting was replaced with a new low-maintenance picnic combo with the concrete slab also receiving a pressure clean. It will be held again at the Glasshouse Mountains Community Hall, outside if the weather is fine, but can be moved inside if thunderstorms or rain are threatening.

Love never fails when you’ve joined up Lion: “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” To carry on the analogy. God ‘joined up’ with us in Baptism. He established His covenant with us. In God, we have safety and security. Even though we may stay from God, he nevertheless draws us back to Himself. He gave us Jesus, the One to bring us back to God. Jesus said, “I, when I be lifted up, will draw all people to myself”. There are similar signs of submission within the relationship between horse and owner. Trust in God will also show in the daily lives of believers. When we are safe and secure in God, faith will enable us to face our encounters with confidence and hope.

IN the world of horsemanship, “join up” is well known and accepted. When the ‘alpha’ figure is established, the relationship between horse and person is clearly identified. As an animal of flight, the horse seeks to escape from any danger. When trust is established, the horse sees its owner as the one to protect and guide it. Fear is removed and learning begins. By nature, we are estranged from God. Upon realizing their sin, Adam and Eve hid from God. In the ‘flight’ from God, this Garden of Eden which was a place of care and beauty became something to be feared. God continued to care for them. His love never failed. In Genesis 3:15, God promises to send one who would not destroy, but rather would save. The serpent’s power would be crushed forever. But His presence remains today. Like the prey animals who attack the wild horses, and from whom they must escape, so the Christians today need also watch. St Peter gave a firm warning about this Glass Housing 55

P Slade included the concept in his recent letter. My children have benefitted from state and private faith-based education. I have worked in schools for many years and was a member of an Education Queensland task group concerning faith in schools. As such, I feel I can offer an answer. Simply put, all children have the right to education and all our taxes support all these children’s access to education. There will be folk who support state or private eduction who disagree with what is happening in the sector they are not aligned with, but their taxes will be required nonetheless. Originally all schools were faith based. Difficulties between Catholic and Protestant arose, so the faith leaders created a system where no one denomination had preference over another, they called this secular. The primary purpose declared equity between religions, not exclusion from religion (“Free, Compulsory and Not Secular”Catherine Byrne).

Staying informed is the key I am certainly better informed than many so called and self-proclaimed climateRememberexperts.the highly paid Tim Flannery who said rain will not fall nor fill our rivers (he was a professor of old bones). Tell that to the victims of recent floods. A few hot days in England is not proof of global warming. Many politicians pander to the badly informed global warmers. Their jobs and pay depend on that. I am not dependant on getting re-elected or a job. Some people are making money from this scare scenario and securing theirChina, jobs.amongst some others, is making money from selling wind turbines and solar panels. There is no such thing as renewables. They break down need repairing, replacement and to be disposed of. Some people are making money out of the global warming racket. Always follow the $$. It is very difficult to reason with the ill-informed, but I try! GraemeMalenyTosh

Reference J. Volbrecht’s ‘The Greenies and Climate’, and particularly the Sea levels comment. From every report I’ve seen about this, it seems that the major current cause of sea levels rising is the melting of glaciers all over the Earth and ice sheets at the North and South Poles and the melting is happening as a result of global warming. Private students receive significantly less ‘tax’ money per head than state school children, with the parents making up the remainder in fees. Without the private sector the government could not afford to educate every child and therefore their education would suffer with reduced finances being spread thin; or taxes would have to go up significantly to cover the education costs.

Private schools save the government money allowing it to direct more funds to the state sector! Without the private sector (which educates about a third of all children) the government would have to invest in approximately 3,100 new schools, purchase land, buildings, pay staff, maintain the site etc (abs.gov.au).

IN THEBrownieWith gardenAsk Brownie “Attached is a photo of a plant that grew in an empty pot. We would love to know what it is before we take appropriate action to reclaim the pot. Regards, Peter Cowell” Hi Peter, thanks for sharing your photo. That’s a wild looking plant you’ve got there. It’sa form of Terrestrial Elkhorn Fern or Fishtail Fern (Microsorum polycarpon ‘grandiceps’) and often pops up in pots and moist crevices in rock walls. The species is a Queensland native and is local to this region. They are also a commonly grown pot plant due to them being resilient, fast growing and hard to kill. They also do OK as indoor plants in spots with lots of natural light. My suggestion is to find a nice, sheltered moist spot in the garden… maybe under a tree, in amongst rocks or in a hollow log – and transplant it. In nature, it’s a lithophyte (growing in organic matter on rocks), so make sure you plant it into a soil and compost mix that’s heavy on compost and organic matter. That way it’ll have a nice rich growing medium to establish into which will drain well. rhizome at the base (a rhizome is just the word for the underground stem it grows from). Or you could just leave it in the pot as it is.Ifyou leave it in the pot, it looks like it could really do with a feed. Just use one of the pelletised chicken manure products sprinkled around the base of the leaves. Maybe give it a soaking with a seaweed or fish solution too. One of the other Microsorum ferns which is unusual and is a great potted feature plant is called the Crocodyllus or Crocodile Fern (Microsorum musifolium). It gets this name from the unusually patterned strappy leaves which somewhat resembles the scaly look of crocodile skin. This fern is very suited to our climate and performs very well as an indoor potted plant. But they also will grow in the garden in the right location – sheltered, moist, lots of organic matter. In a pot, they need to be given some regular attention with watering and feeding, and the outer leaves will age and turn brown and need trimming off to keep the plant looking snappy. The only pests that might be a problem are scale insects and the plant is pet-friendly too (ie it’s not a problem if your moggy chews on a leaf). If you have a question you’d like answered, just drop me a line to reception@gcnews.com.au

• Manage disputes with tenants

8. How do property managers help to add value to a property investment? Property managers can help investors by helping them set the right market rent. They can help retain tenants by addressing their day to day requests and maintenance issues promptly. They are skilled at screening tenants to find the right one for you and your property. They help keep accurate financial records for your accountant. They conduct regular inspections to ensure your property is being looked after. They manage the rent, including settling, adjusting and collecting it. They are required to attend regular training and qualification sessions and are across the ever-changing Residential Tenancy Laws and how they impact landlords. For more information regarding the management of your investment property, please call our friendly McGrath team on (07) 5405 3628

So, in a nutshell yes you can rent your property without an agent but partnering with an experienced property manager can help save landlords a significant amount of time and money and make owning a rental property more rewarding. Plus, property management fees are tax deductible.

If you are renting out a room in your house or apartment, you can only claim expenses related to renting out that space in the property. This means you need to apportion the expenses on a floor to area basis that the tenant solely uses and add in a ‘fair’ amount for expenses based on their access to common areas. Importantly talk to your accountant about any tax implications if you rent out your property.

2. Do I pay tax if I rent out my house? If you rent out your house or apartment or part of your home, the net rental income needs to be declared in your tax return as per any other investments. In addition, if you rent all or part of the property out you may not be entitled to the full main residence exemption from CGT. You generally don’t pay Capital Gains Tax if you sell the home you live in, however if you have rented the property out, the floor area that was used to generate income, is most likely not exempt from CGT. The good news is though that being an investment, you can claim running costs like rates, water, depreciation on the property, property management fees, maintenance and repair costs, landlord insurance etc.

• Managing the bond and ensuring it is lodged with the relevant state body

• Staying across the ever changing residential tenancy legislation. There can be serious penalties for breaking the law, whether you meant to or not

• Landlord insurance • Repair and maintenance costs

4. Can I afford to rent out my house? There are number of upfront and ongoing costs you need to be aware of if you’re looking to rent out your property. Here is a look at some of the key costs:

• Mortgage fees. Note these may change if you are changing a loan from an owner occupier to an investment loan

20 PROPERTIES LEASED FOR THE MONTH OF JULY! It has been another action-packed month for our Property Management Team here at McGrath Coast & Hinterland, with over 20 properties leased for the month of July! • Booking and hosting inspections

5. What is capital growth of a property investment? Capital growth, or capital appreciation, is the increase in value of your property investment over time. As an example, if you bought an investment property for $600,000 and sold it for $660,000, you would have achieved capital growth of $60,000.

Here are some changes that may impact McGrath CEO & Founder - John McGrath your investment property’s rental appeal and value. Consider painting the walls, tidying up the garden, fixing the flooring, updating the kitchen, refreshing the bathroom, adding some extra features such as air conditioning, dishwasher, blinds, shutters or curtains. Adding built-ins or storage, adding in a parking space if possible and keeping the apartment or house well maintained. Of course, talk to your property manager and financial advisor about your particular property and whether these changes would help add value.

1. Can I rent out my house on a normal mortgage? If you have an owner occupier mortgage and want to rent out your property, you are effectively turning your property into an investment property. As a result, you will need to contact your home loan lender to see how this impacts your current home loan. Investment loans are typically more expensive in terms of interest rates. For example, a variable interest home loan for an owner-occupier might be available at 2.75 per cent interest. However, an investment mortgage for the same property may be 3.25 per cent interest. In addition, the lender may assess how much equity you have in the property and require you to put forward additional cash to reduce your loan to value ratio. It is very important not to misrepresent your home loan as you don’t want to be accused of occupancy fraud. Make sure you talk to your lender before changing your owner-occupied residence to a rental property.

• You’ll need be available out of hours and on weekends

• Property owner rates such as water rates, council rates etc • Property management fees

• Accountancy fees

• Advertising costs to find a tenant

7. How can I add value to my investment property?

• Chase unpaid rent • Make regular inspections Handle end of lease processes

3. Can I rent my property without a property agent? Yes, you can rent out your property without an agent. While DIY property management may seem like you’re saving money, it does require a considerable amount of work and carries serious legal responsibilities. Understanding the work involved before deciding to manage your property yourself is a good idea. As a self-managing landlord, you will be responsible for:

6. What is a rental yield? The rental yield is the profit generated by your investment as a percentage of its value. Investors use their rental yield to evaluate the income they generate from their investment and to compare properties. A high rental yield equates to greater cash flow.

• Screening applications

• Managing the signing of the lease • Completing condition reports

Horoscopes

AUGUSTVIRGO

– FEBRUARY 18

Stay alert, Gemini, as this week could be laced with deception. Someone you don’t know very well may try to establish a closer friendship in order to extract a favour. This is fine, as long as you know what the game is - and play by your own rules. It’s also important to set intentions for the next few months. Create a vision board.

Certain realisations can take time to dawn on us. The tell-tale signs often come in the form of a project or relationship that’s lost its appeal. The question is: are you really interested anymore? If you feel like letting your game drop, maybe it’s for good reason. The planets encourage you to stop awhile and take stock. Clear your head, Taurus.

One particular project rules this week. Librans seek broader horizons through knowledge or meditation. Ideas become more intense as your spiritual and intellectual awareness deepens. Others will recognise these special talents. In turn, their assistance boosts your more recent slump in confidence or cashflow.

DECEMBERCAPRICORN22

– FEBRUARY 18

This week brings an important turning point - a time when you’re free to attract whatever, or whoever, you please. For some, new work unfolds. Others enjoy the pleasures of requited romance. Just be wary of overly-dependent companions, particularly those who would happily fritter away your hard-earned cash.

Routine has become a way of life for many. If life has become too predictable, it’s time to try something new - even if you’re stuck at home. Start by making one small change every day or so. Initially, the choice may not feel comfortable, but it’s important to realise how long old patterns have been fixed in place. Be bold, Cancer.

APRILTAURUS21 – MAY 20

If there’s to be any conflict, look to relationships. Mostly because the planets are meddling where they shouldn’t. Even so, take this chance to express unresolved anger - but in a constructive way. As peace returns towards late week, you again head in a positive direction. But if still feeling unsure, sympathetic friends lend a comforting shoulder.

You may feel like you’re being pulled into many different directions. Perhaps a friend or loved one has a tad too much to say, or they’ll try to deceive you. Don’t be fooled by false promises. Think about what it is you want for a change, take charge and ditch those who don’t support you. Take control of your life.

You’re probably feeling better, Aries, as there’s a noticeable increase on your “can-do” list. This could be some higher spiritual element creeping into the equation. Whatever’s happening, you’re tapping into something extraordinary. With good fortune on side as well, why not take a risk or two? Use all blessings to your advantage.

– DECEMBER 21

Teamwork comes more easily this week. You know which buttons to push to get others moving in the right direction without upsetting their sense of independence. Support comes to you from an unexpected source without you having to ask for it. Even an old rival may come over to your side. It seems you have more in common, after all.

19 – MARCH 20 Sometimes Piscean vulnerability puts your trust in situations that aren’t reliable. You did not ask to be hurt, but hurt you were. At some point, you must forgive those who have caused you pain. If the time’s not yet right, don’t force anything. Be gentle with yourself. A meditative solo walk in nature could be just what you need.

NOVEMBERSAGITTARIUS23

JULYLEO 23 – AUGUST 23 Now, here’s a better week - as others seem more prepared to grant your requests. By now you’ve probably accumulated a very long wish list, so gently start hinting at what you want. They say that there’s a time and a place for everything. For you, it’s now. There’s also focus on rebuilding friendships.

APRILTAURUS21 – MAY 20

OCTOBERSCORPIO 24 – NOVEMBER 22

24 – SEPTEMBER 22

– JANUARY 20

Here’s a delightful week when social life and friendships are likely to thrive. You actively seek like-minded souls, and they’re magnetically drawn to you. In matters of the heart, carnally charged couples embrace deeper passions. Singles, too, are encouraged to give boldest fantasies free reign. Lust at first sight, perhaps?

JULYLEO

Think twice before saying anything in the heat of the moment, or you may regret it. Yes, these are difficult times, but remember we’re all in this together. It’s at home that you’re particularly restless. Virgos who manage to get out and relax regularly fare better. It’s the home-bound that are having a particularly hard time.

Not all negotiations proceed smoothly this week - particularly if you’re pushed into overload. If challenged, try not to exaggerate the situation or facts, as the naked truth has a way of stripping down lies. You’re not being targeted, Scorpio. Troubles can happen to anyone, and invariably do. Step cautiously.

SEPTEMBERLIBRA 23 – OCTOBER 23

This week is all about sticking to what you know best. The Sun emphasises routine, so work with what’s familiar. You’ll make up for any lost time soon enough. Also, don’t exaggerate the facts as this may cause misunderstandings. Use tact and charm when faced with dilemmas. Compromise and be prepared to listen to others.

With stress and uncertainty heaving you here, there and everywhere - you’ve a right to feel confused. One minute you’re up, the next...down. If doubt invades your confidence, remember your very unique talents and strengths. Unleash all that amazing creativity. You may even stumble across a new hobby or career path.

This is a week of change, particularly regarding your image. With charm and charisma peaking, prepare for a parade of admirers. If attached, expect to be especially close to your partner. At work, confidence coupled with creativity should also get most of your ideas noticed and appreciated. And then, you can finally wind down for the weekend.

OCTOBERSCORPIO 24 – NOVEMBER 22

While your Capricorn composure usually keeps you out of trouble, less sensible minds seem determined to stay on a collision course. So, again, you may have to clean up after others. Recently, too, you’ve been more insular. Later this week, emotional barriers start to tumble, and you again start to share your love.

JANUARYAQUARIUS21

MAYGEMINI21 – JUNE 21

This week, don’t ruffle any feathers by speaking up at the wrong time or for the wrong reasons. It’s no use shouting louder than others if what you say isn’t being heard. And be sure to have all the facts before you speak. Listen carefully, Leo, and be certain that you have the whole truth before voicing a verbal attack.

JUNECANCER22 - JULY 22

Someone simply doesn’t understand your thoughts or actions this week, and they may even go out of their way to hold you back. Best advice: never allow others to smother your dreams. You knew what you wanted long before they arrived on the scene. If this individual truly loves and respects you, they will support you through thick and thin.

23 – AUGUST 23

This week encourages Scorpios to give ambitions a nudge. But you first must discard any debilitating doubts. Over time, it can become very easy to fall into a safe and familiar rut. This could be fuelled by fear of failure, or simple lethargy. Neither suit your usual determined nature. So while the cosmic coast is clear, make changes.

For a while now, many Capricorns have suffered uncertainty. But the universe never asks us to cope with situations we’re not ready for. So when this week brings you to a crisis point, you’ll be surprised at how well you handle the situation - with confidence, and very little anxiety. Be proud.

If you can command some sort of respect in this self-serving world, you’re not doing too badly. This week, many Aquarians fare better than most. Perhaps it’s because you’ve finally sorted your thoughts into coherent order. Suddenly, it all makes sense. After the 30th, look out for new ways to increase your income.

You’re about to set a new course, but this change in direction may bring some tough decisions. If at odds with a spouse or business associate, the main source of conflict is likely to be money. While one wants to save, the other is more interested in spending. A sensible compromise would be to spend only what you have - put all credit on hold.

The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker THE open club championships were completed on the morning of Thursday 28th with Nick Cram winning a game which was tight right up to the bell against Val Carbery. After the bell Nick played a good break to make some difference in the scores, however, before that, it was neck and neck. The eventual result 20–13 in Nick’s favour gave him his third win and guaranteed him the 2022 open championship. We had visitors from the Caloundra club in the afternoon. Ricky Barrett and Heather Lovell had a jolly social afternoon with several club members. So much fun was had that nobody thought to record scores. Heather, who hails from Kingston Club in Tasmania, and Ricky fronted up for play on the afternoon of Sunday July 31 as well. They were joined by Ted Singleton for what turned out to be a pleasant afternoon despite the early threat of rain. Vince Carbery teamed up with Ted to play Sarah and Nick in a game of doubles on lawn one. Sarah and Nick finished ahead 16-14. On lawn 2 Ken Barker beat Heather 14–8, while Ricky played well to beat Val 17–11. John Reid was our only visitor on Thursday August 4. He teamed up with Sarah to soundly defeat Kath Smith and Sally Adams 19–2. Wallace Roy played well to overcome Lynette Evans 7–0. Sometimes games just become difficult to get into. Ken arrived late to play against Donna Manning who was keen for some match practice. She was preparing for the Queensland Association Women’s Singles on the 6th and the 7th at Toombul. Reports from that event are that she played well. Her shortened game against Ken was a strategic and tactical exercise. On Sunday August 7 Sarah pegged out against Lynette. Her penultimate break included an impressive peel of rover. Vince and Nick made the mistake of emphasizing the “boys v girls” aspect of their doubles game against Val and Kath. Big mistake… the girls won 18–11. Play days are Thursday and Sunday 1pm for 1.30pm. Contact Sarah Widin for other Coachingdays.isavailable on Saturday mornings at 8am. THE Beegee’s women’s new team coach Jason Sparrow is passionate about getting the talented side to win the grand final in 2023.Sparrow has studied women’s football through a business and economics degree, with an honours thesis on male to female coaching communication. In his local coaching career, he has used these skills to lead Caloundra FC to a premiership win for the first time in 15 years a few years ago. He said the Beegee’s have had the potential for success over the past few years and believes they are not far away from turning this into finals glory. “I think the last five years, they’ve won the league two out of five times, but then didn’t reach the grand final so it’s a little bit disappointing for them,” he said. “They’ve not won as many as they should have done, they’ve always had a strong squad for as long as I can remember.“Myaimis to get them through to the grand final and actually win it.” He has used techniques within the team including letting the girls control half time talks instead of him, and giving them stimulating training sessions. “It helps them understand rather than me just shouting about ‘run there and stand there’, I want them to be able to solve everything on the field,” he said. “What I’ve noticed over the years, a lot of male coaches who have not coached female teams before will give them games all the time. “I concentrate on creating a new skill for the girls each year so at the end of the year they can all do something they were never able to do before.”

THE Sunshine Coast Cricket Association and the Sunshine Coast Scorchers team will now be based in Landsborough this cricket season. The association, which had been based in Buderim, jumped at the chance to take on the Landsborough lease at Tunnel Ridge Road, saying the benefits including an improved income stream would be beneficial.

“It’s Love All”.. whether you’re 8 or 80 at the Landsborough Tennis Club

It will also benefit local cricket hinterland clubs, Glass House, Maleny and Landsborough. “They will benefit from it because whereas they used to have to drive up to Buderim all the time to do things now it’s that much closer for them,” he“Butsaid.we’ve got a pretty spread-out region, we actually go from Gympie to Caboolture.”

TALENTED Beerwah swimmer Tyla Paterson says the Australian swimming team’s success at Birmingham is just the inspiration she needs to help reach her goal of Olympic glory in Paris 2024. Just two weeks out from competing at her first National Opens competition, the 16-year-old Beerwah State High student said she was primed to swim against top level swimmers and prove her mettle. “I could potentially be versing Olympians at the National Opens so that’s pretty scary, but it’s a goal that I imagined myself getting to at some stage though,” TylaHersaid.best times in her main events are 2.38.66 and 1.13.32 for her 200 metre and 100 metre breaststroke, which both qualified her to compete in the previously Beerwah team Davina Stokes placed second in the 50m breaststroke. Thanks to the ladies’ efforts, their team placed equal 4th, and are now looking mentioned National Opens. Her sporting inspiration is Olympian Emma McKeon, who won 20 medals at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, but wants to continue to be herself as she develops.“Iobviously aspire to be myself and my own swimmer, just because I like to do the weird events that people wouldn’t usually swim as much as the others, but I like being my own person,” she said.

BEERWAH masters swimmer Lene Knudsen has broken two Queensland records for her age group in the Masters Swimming Queensland competition at Belgravia’s club in Burpengary. Knudsen broke the 50-metre freestyle record by 0.23s, touching the wall in 29.24s. She also broke the 100-metre freestyle record by 0.5s, finishing in 1:05.02. Cricket on a higher level

New coach revitalises premier women’s team with unique leadership style

The FPQL 3 Sunshine Coast Women’s finals will begin at the start of September.

GLASSHOUSE Cricket Club bowler Joel Owen has been picked in his first representative team for the Coastal Marlins, which play in the Brisbane T20 league. When the left arm spin bowler found out he had been picked in the Marlins, he was very happy to be considered.“Iwaskeen when I found out, it’s going to be a new challenge and a next step up from cricket on the coast, and I’m keen to give it a crack,” he said. The first event he competed in for the team was the BPL century tournament at Kedron Sports Field during the first weekend in August. The 22-year-old has been playing cricket since he first went along to a cricket training session with his brother when he was around 14, and he’s stuck to it for eight years. But Joel is not looking for fame in the sport, and just enjoys the game and the social aspect which it brings him. “I don’t really look at it for a career, its more for a bit of fun and make some mates and new friendships,” he said. The results for the Century tournament were mixed for the Coastal Marlins, losing their first two matches by 4 wickets and 7 wickets respectively. They started to find their feet against Moreton Magic, winning by 33 runs, and then won by 8 wickets against the Southern Rockets in the semi-final. However, they lost by just 19 runs against the Gold Coast Waveriders in the grand final who previously went down to the team in their second match of the tournament by 7 wickets.

Sunshine Coast Cricket Association President Chris Baker said the women’s Scorchers team will also play at the Landsborough grounds, which they used to compete on some years ago. “This will be really good for us,” Chris said.“If we are doing that with a few little improvements, just to make it all better for everyone ... it should be really good.” He added: “It’s more what the building offers, it outweighs those disadvantages (of distance) because we can use it for all sorts of things.” Another benefit of the lease will be the income flow the association will receive by renting their space to other groups when they don’t need to use the area. “We hope to be able to generate a bit of an income stream out of it and you can hire it out and groups can use it on a regular basis,” Chris said. “And we can make a little bit of money out of it which helps do what we’ve got to do.”

THREE of the patriarchs who are not only proud members of the Landsborough Tennis Club, but also the “Octogenarian Club”.Peter Markwort 83, Andy Schouteten 81and Peter Gaw 80 (the junior of the trio), were delighted to be at the launch of the Junior Aces program. Pictured with the senior gents are budding juniors - Abbey 8, Sammy 5 and Hayden 7. The launch was wonderfully received by the local community which saw 28 juniors aged 5 - 15 participate in the first of its kind pilot program. Club president Dan Black said “ I am delighted with the tremendous turn out and enthusiasm from not only the participants but the parents as well for the 12 week complimentary program. A very welcome reprieve from the onslaught of rising costs for families at this time. Landsborough and the Landsborough Hotel and the continued support of Tennis Queensland”. One day, she was alone with her husband and she was overcome with emotion at his sacrifice. She said, “Dear, I just want to thank you for everything you did for me. There is no way I could ever repay you.”

A Priest was about to finish his tour of duty and was leaving his Mission in the jungle where he spent years teaching the natives, in their language, when he realizes that the one thing he never really taught them much was how to speak English.Sohe takes the chief for a walk in the forest. He points to a tree and says to the chief, “This is a tree.”

Terrible burns

The chief looks at the tree and grunts, “Tree.”ThePriest is pleased with the response. They walk a little further and he points to a rock and says, “This is a rock.”

A married couple were in a terrible accident where the woman’s face was severely burned. The doctor told the husband that they couldn’t graft any skin from her body because she was too skinny. So the husband offered to donate some of his skin. However, the only skin that the doctor felt was suitable would have to come from his buttocks.Thehusband and wife agreed that they would tell no one about where the skin came from, and requested that the doctor also honour their secret. After all, this was a very delicate matter.

“My darling,” he replied, “think noting of it. I get all the thanks I need every time I see your mother kiss you on the cheek.”

The Priest was really getting enthusiastic about the results when he hears a rustling in the bushes. As they peek over the top, he sees a couple of natives in the midst of heavy sexual activity. The Priest is really flustered and quickly says, “Man riding a bike.” The chief looks at the couple briefly, pulls out his blowgun and kills them both. The Priest goes ballistic and yells at the chief that he has spent years teaching the tribe how to be civilized and be kind to each other, so how could he kill these people in cold blood that way? The chief replied, “My bike.”
