FROM THE EDITOR DIGITAL photography and selfies have dramatically changed the type of photos we see these days. We can take 64 photos of ourselves and then delete the 63 least-liked images. The result of this is that while we always have lots of lovely wellcomposed photos that are thoughtfully planned and staged, we sometimes don’t capture those candid or quirky shots that tell the whole story. So when I saw the photo of the lovely Angelique Hallett, a social entrepreneur and Glasshouse Christian College student, that showed the genuine joy and excitement she felt at being named Young Citizen of the Year, I knew she should be on our cover this week. our writer Sonia she said that initially she hadn’t realised what a big deal the award was. When she found out more, she was amazed at just how big the honour was to be nominated, so winning came as a huge surprise. And I am sure that smile on her face pretty much confirms that comment. Learning more about Angelique and her project, it is not surprising that she received the award. Congratulations Angelique and please enjoy our cover story on page 3. Regards

Social entrepreneur named Young Citizen of the Year
story
By Sonia Isaacs Clark ANGELIQUE Hallett, a compassionate young woman with a bright future, has recently been awarded Young Citizen of the Year at the Sunshine Coast Council Australia Day Awards. The year 12 Glasshouse Christian College student was recognised for her outstanding and innovative work as founder and director of the social enterprise, Loving Hope Bears. The not-for-profit initiative provides teddy bears purchased by community members to help offer comfort to children fleeing domestic violence, with more than 300 bears delivered to shelters across the Sunshine Coast. Angelique said she was thrilled but absolutely speechless when her name was announced as winner at the awards ceremony attended by more than 250 dignitaries, nominees and their guests. “I had no idea that I would win so it came as a complete surprise! When I initially found out I had been nominated at the end of last year, I really didn’t know much about the awards and I had no idea what a big deal it was,” Angelique said. She was nominated by her business mentor Cherrell Picton, who had worked with Angelique through the Generation Innovation challenge. However, the enterprise idea was incubated two years earlier by Angelique at school as part of her involvement

with the DeLorean Project, a weekly program to extend year 10 students in 21st century skills such as communication, collaboration, critical and creative thinking, and use of technology. “The DeLorean Project basically gave us a whole entire day each week to help us change the world,” Angelique said. “The main idea was to find a problem that really spoke to our heart and to look at ways we could try to fix it. I knew domestic violence was such a big issue that I couldn’t fix it but I was able to break down the issue into smaller areas and see the effect it had on children through no fault of their own, and that is what impacted me the most. So that’s where I turned my focus to try to make a difference,” she said. DeLorean Project coordinator and secondary teacher Tanya Cullen said Angelique’s project was an excellent example of the program’s goals in that she had found a real problem and aligned it with a passion of hers, created a solution and shared it with a growing audience. Over the past two years, Angelique has looked at ways to provide a teddy bear to every child in domestic violence shelters on the Sunshine Coast and Gympie region, and said she has achieved nearly 80% of her goal. While Angelique is now turning her focus to

Beerwah fast becoming retirement central ANOTHER retirement village is on the drawing board for Beerwah, with a development application submitted to Sunshine Coast Council over a large block in Pine Camp Road. The 1.5 hectare parcel at 35 Pine Camp Road is proposed to be developed into three different uses totalling almost 200 beds across all three components: • An 88 room single-bed, two-level retirement care facility • A three-storey 46-unit retirement complex (twoand three-bedroom) • 12 duplex-style dwellings each with two bedrooms and two bathrooms. The block is to be split into three separate lots, with each different use contained within a separate land parcel. Other facilities planned include a medical facility, gym and Pilates rooms, café, pool and spa, community garden, outdoor cinema space and parking for 151 vehicles, three motorcycles and 30 bicycles. Architectural drawings of the proposal show it as a significant scale development in the urban landscape, with the tallest building height about 15m. The construction will be over three stages, starting with the 12 duplexes, then the independent living units
and then the residential care facility. The site is close to public transport and shopping, with the Beerwah Village and Marketplace directly behind and within walking distance. The development application planning report concludes that the proposal is within the guidelines for high density residential zoning and meets all relevant

requirements of the planning scheme. The application is considered to be code assessable and no community notification or consultation is required. To read more about the proposal go to https://developmenti.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and search for MCU21/0018.

K hub comes to town WHILE the hinterland community may have been concerned late last year when Target Australia downsized its brand and closed its Beerwah store, the replacement Kmart concept K hub has been received with a flurry of excitement since opening its doors on January 29. In what appears to be a well placed drawcard for Beerwah Village Shopping Centre, local residents have flocked to social media to express their delight about the transformed store, with generally favourable comments applauding the opportunity for greater convenience, choice and variety than previously available. Judging by the online enthusiasm generated around the store opening, the mix of Kmart’s most popular kids, homewares and clothing products in a smaller format store seems to be a winning formula with the local community expressing excitement about popular on-trend products, essential items and homewares.
h Beerwah Marketplace & Beerwah Village management’s Tracie Price said that they were excited to welcome Kmart’s K hub to the centre. Glasshouse “The feedback has been so Country Chamber positive about the change of of Commerce president Jenny store and it is such a bonus for Broderick our community to have a Kmart so accessible that not only stocks most of the essentials but is also a pick up point for all online orders for Kmart, Target and Catch of The Day,” Tracie said. Jenny Broderick, Glasshouse Country Chamber of K hub is located at the Simpson Street end of Commerce president, said the new store was a great Beerwah Village and is open Monday-Wednesday addition for Beerwah and benefitted both the local and Saturday 9am-6pm, Thursday-Friday 9am-7pm, community and businesses. Sunday 9am-5pm. She welcomed the opportunity for the community to purchase a more extensive range of homewares, basics and essential items, and the greater interest in surrounding businesses and services as more people were drawn to shop and stay local. “The new store looks really good and it’s a great drawcard for Beerwah Village,” Jenny said. “There’s a real sense of excitement and momentum building with increased local buying and business confidence as more services and businesses are attracted to the area. “With the opening of stores like K hub more people have what they need to stay here, shop here and spend here, which is fantastic for our local community,” she said.

Smooth transition at Chamber’s AGM By Lea Parkes AN enthusiastic group of Maleny Commerce members recently attended their AGM at the group’s February breakfast meeting at the Maleny Hotel. While there were quite a few changes to the executive committee, the official part of the meeting was run quickly and efficiently allowing attendees a chance to enjoy plenty of informal networking. The most significant change from the meeting was the role switch between the chamber’s president and the paid administration role. Kay Ridge of Dash Media has taken on the top job and Nicole Hilton, the former Maleny Credit Union’s business development officer, has moved from the president’s job to take up the paid admin role with the chamber. president’ss After three years in the president

chair and a couple more as vice president, as well as being a former committee member of Maleny Commerce, Nicole will bring much experience and knowledge to the position. Also stepping down from their roles were secretary Melissa Chaddock from RE/MAX and committee member Max Dun from Maleny Drinks Company, while Clive Warring from Maleny Wedding Photography and Mark Henderson from Blackall Range Real Estate have taken on these jobs. Continuing on the committee are long-time treasurer Jennepher Bucher from Maleny Cheese and Paulette Steele from Real Positions, along with experienced retired w members Scott Kroeger and Ann Brown. Following a very quiet yyear for events in 2020 tthe new committee has plenty on the agenda for 2021 and can’t wait to get tthings moving for the year ahead.

Update on Coles in Beerwah THE development applications to establish a Coles supermarket and a petrol station and fast food outlet in Beerwah have stalled at the assessment stage. The much-discussed proposal on the corner of Steve Irwin Way and Roys Road is in the deliberation phase of the Sunshine Coast Council and state government assessment processes, with the deadline for a decision deferred until February 26. This is the second deferral to allow more time to assess the information. Further deferrals are likely due to the complexity of the planning requirements. The matter has stimulated considerable discussion through GC&M News social media sites, as well as the letters pages of this newspaper. In response to recent letters to the editor, Division 1 councillor Rick Baberowski has clarified a number of points and issues regarding the new Bells Creek connection road, which will join Roys Road to Caloundra through Aura. This new road will allow locals quick and easy access to the considerable retail and shopping precincts planned

Mooloolah Dental expands By Lea Parkes WITH more than four decades working as a dentist, including almost 26 as principal dentist and owner of Mooloolah Dental, Dr David Zimmerman is a well-respected member of our local community. Last year Dr Zimmerman, who is adamant he is in no hurry to retire from the work he still loves, made the decision to sell the business but to continue looking after his patients three days a week. He said that by selling the business to Dr Shreeragh Sagar and his wife Dr Amulya Gowda he was in the unique position of being able to choose his new boss, while increasing the time he could spend on his other passions. Dr Sagar, who clearly admires Dr Zimmerman’s professional approach to his work, the rapport he has with his patients and the positive work culture he has created with the team, is looking forward to him continuing to be part of the business. The couple spent two and a half years searching for a suitable dental practice to make their own before Amulya discovered Mooloolah Dental,
Glasshouse Country & Maleny News
which they were both impressed by, particularly how the practice was operated and its future potential. The new business owners had been living and working in Hervey Bay for the past decade. Dr Sagar, who introduces himself as Sagar, said they were very happy to be making the Sunshine Coast their new home. Over the past few months Sagar and Amulya have made a smooth transition into the business and are pleased that all the team will stay with the practice, including dental surgeon Dr Mark Hall. Sagar completed his dentistry qualifications in 2004 and has worked in Australia for Queensland Health and in private practice since 2011. He is currently studying a Masters degree in oral implantology at Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany and is available for appointments for new patients three days a week. Amulya, who is also a dentist, is currently working in the administration side of the business. They are waiting for plans to be approved to extend the building to include a third surgery at the back of
Dawn Westaway, Dr Amulya Gowda, Dr Shreeragh Sagar and Dr David Zimmerman the building, which will allow them to expand the services they can offer. Both Sagar and Amulya have appreciated the warm and welcoming response they have received from the staff as well as all of members of the community they have already met and are looking forward to becoming part of the township.

Photographer Kim Edwards
Kim Edwards By Sonia Isaacs Clark
THE work of award-winning Glass House Mountains’ photographer Kim Edwards, currently exhibiting at Vianta in Beerwah, was featured in the last issue of GC&M News. A prolific traveller with an extensive and dynamic career in international community development education and training, Kim has been fortunate to combine her professional goals with her personal passion for exploration and storytelling. Kim is also a published author, diver and committed triathlete. We chatted to her to find out more about her intriguing story. Q: Tell us about some of your achievements. I have been very blessed with some great challenges and had the great joy of being at the forefront of many pioneering opportunities.
Kim hanging some of her work at the new Vianta exhibition
I have recently returned to Australia after seven years working in Saudi Arabia where I was the dean of the first women’s vocational college in that country and the first western woman to live in a remote Bedouin region 200km west of Riyadh. I was there during the time women were given the freedom to drive and I am the second Australian woman to be granted a Saudi driver’s licence. Saudi is a diverse and vast country. I travelled extensively throughout the region, including travelling across the Empty Quarter and to Yemen, and really fell in love with the beauty of the desert and its people. Q: Where do your passions truly lie and why? I have so many different things that motivate me that it’s hard to narrow it down. One of my favourite quotes is “Life is either an extraordinary adventure, or nothing at all” by Helen Keller. My parents were great adventurers and pioneers and, as a result, it’s always been a very natural way to live my life. But, above all else, I love people and exploring cultures. I have been very blessed to be able to travel throughout my career and have always chosen to travel to the hardest places. Q: You’re obviously an intuitive storyteller. What do you value about storytelling? It doesn’t matter where you travel, people are always drawn to stories. It is what connects us, what we can relate to and what we remember most.
A keen traveller, Kim has explored more than 100 nations Everyone has a story to tell. And at the end of our lives all we are, are stories. Q: What criteria did you use to narrow down your choice of photos used in the current Vianta exhibition? The ‘Life in the desert’ exhibition has been a dream project and it is exciting to see it finally happen. I have chosen a range of photos that create a story of life in Saudi Arabia - photos that capture the beauty of the people, the vast landscape and a glimpse into the every day. Saudi Arabia is a new country with an ancient culture. For example, one of the photos is titled ‘First day at school’, which shows two veiled women and a young girl looking at me with large dark curious eyes. At first it may seem that the photo is about the young girl but it is actually about the moment that her mother and aunty are able to enrol into college for the first time. Every photo tells a story.

Pride of Workmanship Awards 2021 SHARING the genuine joy and beaming smiles on the faces of the Pride of Workmanship nominees at their awards presentation last year has motivated the Rotary Club of Maleny to host the awards again in 2021. The club’s vocational director, Paulette Steele, said that, for Rotary Maleny, the project was a wonderful way to acknowledge even more people who had demonstrated excellence in the workplace as local employees or volunteers. “Last year’s awards’ night was so much fun and there were people still sitting around drinking and chatting with their families and friends long after the event was officially over,” Paulette said. One of last year’s nominees, Melody Fanti from IGA Maleny, was unable to attend the awards dinner and has since been presented with her award instore by Maleny Rotary president Greg Williams. The awards provide local Maleny businesses and organisations, and community members the chance to nominate someone for their efforts and approach to their jobs. If there is someone who impresses you, show them just how much they are appreciated and valued by completing
the very simple nomination form, which will be available online from the end of May. Rotary Club members will also be engaging with local businesses in June and handing out nomination forms. Entries will be due by Saturday July 31, with the award night tentatively set for Saturday, August 28, at Tranquil Park. Nomination forms will be available at www.malenyrotary.org. Fantasy theme for Knitfest 2021
World Day of Prayer 2021
IT’S time to embrace your inner funky nana and ‘get your knit on’ in preparation for Knitfest 2021. This year is a fantasy theme that will see the streets of Maleny covered in crochet and colour on Saturday-Sunday, July 3-4. After last year’s event was postponed, organiser Debs Swain said that she was thrilled that the popular winter Knitfest Yarn & Fibre Arts Festival was back on track with this year’s theme - There’s a dragon in my garden - set to inspire some fabulously fantastical creations. “Originally this was our theme for the 2020 festival that had to be cancelled, so with the plans already in place we decided to carry it forward for this year’s event,” Debs said. “We love dragons and we thought these mystical magical creatures would make a really visually exciting theme that would appeal to all age groups.” The winter festival, now in its fifth year, celebrates all things warm and woolly and is a great drawcard not only for visitors but is embraced by the whole Maleny community, with all locals encouraged to be part of the event. While this year will see a smaller COVID style event with locations for the workshops and trade stalls limited
VANUATU will be the country of focus this year for World Day of Prayer (WDP) on Friday, March 5. Local services will be held at St Mary’s Anglican Church Montville at 10am, St George’s Anglican Church Maleny at 9.30am and Glasshouse Country Baptist Church Beerwah at 9.30am. Believing that prayer and action link people together around the globe, organisers of the 2021 WDP are hoping people will be inspired to bring peace and reconciliation into the world by this year’s theme for contemplation and prayerful action - Build on a Strong Foundation. Attendees are invited to unite for one global theme of prayer that is celebrated in more than 170 countries, while also meeting others and gaining insight into the culture of a different country. Maleny coordinator Dell Somerville said the event was a wonderful way to shine a spotlight onto other cultures and it was always interesting and informative to learn more about other countries. “This year we are very fortunate that one of our congregation members is also a priest from Vanuatu, so he has offered to be our guest speaker and teach us more about his country,” Dell said.
Lindel Kielly and Debs Swain getting ready for this year’s Knitfest theme, There’s a dragon in my garden to less venues and numbers, there are still lots of opportunities for locals to be involved. With yarn-bombing of trees and fixtures around town one of the highlights of the festival, interested crafty folk are welcome to attend the weekly yarn-bombing group at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre every Tuesday from 10am-12noon. For more information about how to get involved go to www.knitfest.com.au or call Debs on 0417 626 167.

Unitywater helps Twinnies great work TWINNIES Pelican and Seabird Rescue was one of 13 local community groups to receive up to $5,000 from Unitywater as part of its latest round of grants. Twinnies founders Paula and Bridgette Powers said the contribution would help them to treat and rehabilitate more animals like Monty the jabiru, which was recently released into Unitywater’s protected Yandina Creek wetland after being found on the Sunshine Motorway last year.
The Twinnies, Bridgette and Paula Powers, farewell Monty the jabiru
“We’ll use this money to construct a new shade shed, so we can increase our capacity to care for even more injured birds just like Monty,” they said. “We believe Monty was separated from his parents during the Peregian bushfires and was brought to us after almost being hit by a truck. “We set up an enclosure, fed him and treated him for ten months, before releasing him into the wetlands, away from any harm. “Seeing him take his first flight back into the environment was truly magic. “Organisations like ours just couldn’t continue doing what we do without help from others, so we’re incredibly grateful for this financial support from Unitywater,” Paula and Bridgette said. Applications for the next round of Unitywater’s community grants will open in mid-2021. For more information visit www.unitywater.com/community-grants To learn more about Twinnies Pelican and Seabird Rescue make sure you like their Facebook page.
Local IGA supports community hall GLASS HOUSE Mountains Community Hall committee members were delighted to receive a $250 donation from Glass House Mountains IGA earlier this month. At this time each year, Landsborough and Glass House Mountains IGAs give back to local community organisations through their Community Chest Program. Glass House store manager Felicity Grigor said that throughout the year funds were raised through the purchase of particular products in store (generally home brand products such as Community Co), which were then donated to chosen community organisations. “The program accumulates throughout the year and cheques are distributed at the beginning of the year after,” she said. “The amount depends entirely on how much we have in our community chest.” John Winterhoff of the Glass House Mountains Community Hall received the cheque on the organisation’s behalf and was thankful for the support given by IGA. Other community organisations supported
this year by Glass House Mountains IGA include Glass House Mountains Rural Fire Brigade, Glass House Mountains State School and the school’s chaplaincy program. Landsborough IGA supported Landsborough Community Hall, Landsborough State School, Landsborough Community Kindergarten and Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade through their Community Chest Program.

FOR the past 30 plus years members of international organisation Friendship Force have focused on melding journeys and home stays with other clubs, both nationally and around the world, enjoying friendships and cultural exchanges wherever they go. However, the Sunshine Coast branch, like the rest of the world, has turned its focus locally with the first meeting for the year held at the Mapleton Men’s Shed to celebrate Australia Day in traditional fashion with fine Aussie food, damper, song and mateship, and four new members welcomed into the club. Future activities this year include regular luncheons while exploring the local region, Zoom trivia nights, a tag-along driving tour and possible future journeys with other clubs in Australia and New Zealand, if and when restrictions ease. Further information about the club and its activities are available on its Facebook page, at www.friendshipforcesunshinecoast.org.au or call 5471 7338 or 5492 8114.

Maleny’s greatest sportsperson OTTO Ernest Nothling was regarded by many as Maleny’s greatest sportsperson in years gone by. He is noted as only one of two Australian rugby and cricket dual internationals recorded in history. Otto was voted one of the top 100 Wallabies of all time. He could also claim the distinctive fame of replacing a young Don Bradman in a cricket team – apparently the first and only time in Bradman’s legendary career he was dropped to twelfth man. Born in Teutoberg (now known as Witta) in 1900, Otto grew up on the family’s dairy farm. Excelling as a lad in cricket, rugby union and athletics, Otto was awarded a scholarship to Brisbane Grammar School and later went to the University of Sydney to study medicine, where he also distinguished himself as an athlete, breaking records in javelin and shot put, while also representing the university at cricket and rugby. A strapping 6 foot 3 inches (191cm) tall, Otto became an outstanding rugby fullback for New South Wales. He played
three times against the visiting South Africans, ten times against New Zealand and six times against visiting Maori teams. However, at only 24 years of age, he retired from rugby to concentrate on cricket. His cricket test career is the stuff of which legends are made, making his first-class debut in 1922-23, and going on to play 21 matches. It was during the 1928-29 Ashes tour where England came to Australia that Bradman was dropped, and Otto Nothling came on in his place. Otto played five times for New South Wales. After returning to Queensland in 1926, he represented the state in 12 Sheffield Shield matches, including three as captain. In 1928, he was selected as opening batsman in the second test side, taking five wickets for 78 against some of the best English players. From 1930 he concentrated on his medical practice and in the late 1930s, Dr Otto Nothling enlisted for service and was a major with the Australian Army Medical Corps. In 1949 he obtained a diploma in

YOU Validity of Pascoe’s work challenged when change is proposed in our own NO one would deny that the lifestyles of our continent’s original inhabitants were severely disrupted by the arrival and subsequent proliferation of European immigrants. However, those lifestyles were nothing like Bruce Pascoe depicts in his ‘Dark Emu’, referred to by Richard Giles (GC&M News, February 2). Its claims are supposedly based on quotes from the records of early explorers and settlers which, on closer inspection, happen to be gross misrepresentations or, often, total fabrications. Historians, including leading authority on Australian Indigenous history Professor Geoffrey Blainey, have publicly refuted Pascoe’s claims, yet many people and organisations that should know better, including the ABC and SBS, actively perpetuate these myths. I feel both sad and angry that this confection is now being fed to school children in other states via Pascoe’s ‘Young Dark Emu’. Anyone interested in this important subject should read Peter O’Brien’s ‘Bitter Harvest: The illusion of Aboriginal agriculture in Bruce Pascoe’s Dark Emu’, which provides a detailed, pointby-point analysis (and refutation) of Pascoe’s claims. For those less inclined to read books, this website is fascinating: www.darkemu-exposed.org Paul Prociv Mount Mellum
Re: Keep our rural life
IN reference to Joanna Aitken’s letter (GC&M News, December 9) and Fiona Kull’s reply (December 21), I respect and appreciate the passion we all have for preserving the character and exceptional lifestyles we have in our country towns, naturally more so
backyards. What’s key here is that council is working pro-actively under state government requirements to provide for growth in a way that preserves our values and character. With that in mind, a crucial condition is that the land being considered for up-zoning is already inside the existing urban footprint. A change in zoning also creates no obligation on existing landowners to sell or develop their land, and landowners are free to keep their blocks as they are and continue with existing lawful uses. The proposed amendment, as currently presented, also contains specific provisions that seek to protect Landsborough’s character, including a newly introduced minimum lot size of 800m2, which is significantly larger than the minimum lot size generally required for low density residential development on the coast. There are also specific provisions proposed in the Landsborough local plan code to protect the area’s environmental features and improve connectivity. Expensive lesson
WE like to think that people in this area are helpful, honest and try to help. However, my recent experience has shown me that there are those in our small communities who will take advantage of a stranger. And I just felt that it would be worth bringing this to the attention of GC&M News readers to warn them that they should be very wary of dealing with people they do not know, and that they should insist on details of what work will be completed. My usual person was unavailable so recently I had to find a contractor to take a load of garden waste to the
tip, so I contacted someone who was recommended by a friend. Initially I was quoted $350 for the work, with the contractor advising it was a large job and would need two trips to the tip. When I said that was too expensive, they offered to do it for $280. After reluctantly agreeing, they arrived shortly afterwards and left with the job done about 45 minutes later, and only requiring one trip to the tip. I had paid for the job but I later rang him and pointed out that he had misled me and had quoted too much, and suggested he return some of what I paid. He claimed that his quote had been for “the job to be done” and not for the number of trips. I have since been advised that the work he did should have cost, at an absolute maximum, $120 all up. Clearly the fault was mine – I accepted his verbal quote, did not ask for details and agreed to pay what he asked. This was an expensive lesson to learn and it reminds me of the old saying: “Let the buyer beware”. Name supplied Maleny
Look right then left to LOL
IF anyone fancies a laugh, then slowly head down to the intersection of Old Gympie Road and Beerwah-Peachester Road, Beerwah; where we are forking out $5.5 million for traffic lights (should’ve been a roundabout) that are hopefully due to be turned on before the next state election in 2024. Considering the amount of time taken so far to get to where we are today, you would have thought that someone might have had a glance at the ‘For Construction’ drawings to see whether the location of a street light would interfere with the seamless flow of a new footpath. Whether this oversight was a legitimate error or because the stop slow traffic

causing crew continuously park their vehicles to block everyone’s line of sight will remain as answerless as to what really did happen to Harold Holt? I don’t know who said proceed when asked by a contractor as to whether they should construct the footpath with the knowledge that a lamp post sits bang in the middle of its proposed route but it screams incompetence.
I know we all need cheering up since our Donald has moved on, but the small people have begun another year at school. How many will sit in the back of the car with furrowed brows and go “Mum/Dad why is there a lamp post in the middle of the footpath”? Their parent(s) will not be able to answer them at first because they will be deep in thought, thinking why are these road works taking so long, why didn’t they build a roundabout instead, and why are the traffic management vehicles always parked in a way that blocks the oncoming traffic for goodness sake! The repetitive “Mum/Dad” from the back seat will snap them out of it eventually and upon hearing the questions of curiosity from said small people, a small tear will appear in the corner of an eye while thinking, “Why indeed?” Mick Procter Beerwah

2021 mobile offices I’M on the road again in 2021, but with a twist. Previously I’ve tended to hold a round of mobile offices – blitzing the entire electorate in a week or two. This year, based on your feedback, I’m trying to be available at a time when all of you can catch me. So I’ll be spreading them out and holding one each week when I’m not in Parliament. Ideally they will be held from 3–5pm but the hours and days will vary each week, depending on other events. Keep an eye on my Facebook page where I will post the details of the next mobile office twice a week. And I look forward to seeing you soon.
Maleny Swimming Pool hours After many months of waiting, the Maleny Swimming Pool is now open for all to use. The opening hours are staggered but you can find information and updates on the pool’s Facebook page –
IN an essential partnership with the community, we will spend the next few years developing a new planning scheme that will critically shape land use and development across our Sunshine Coast region. Council’s next steps in a long process will require all sorts of professional and sector inputs, but for me essentially from you as knowledgeable locals. To learn more, visit council’s website and please register to receive project updates and information about future community consultation activities.

Have your say on the future of waste Council wants your feedback on a proposal to introduce an opt-in third bin for garden waste, which could transition to a food and garden organics bin service, also known as a FOGO bin. We particularly want to hear from our country town residents before any decision is made. Please take the time
I know 2020 had a significant financial impact on many of our community organisations but hopefully 2021 will be much brighter. To kick things off, council’s major grants program is now open offering grants of up to $30,000 for infrastructure projects and up to $15,000 for other projects. Applications close on March 15. Finally, I would like to congratulate Glasshouse Christian College student Angelique Hallett for her outstanding achievements and being awarded the Young Citizen of the Year at the Sunshine Coast Australia Day Awards ceremony in January.

Some extra cash finally arrives encouraging a new image and a happier social life. However, despite most things going to plan, the week may still throw the occasional curve ball. If battling against an authority figure, stay in control. Bullies will always try to rob you of your rights. Best solution? Simply step away.
Mars rules your financial sector this week, pretty well assuring more money. Even long-shot offers hold better promise than they normally might. Spending becomes obsessive – it’s a must-have week. Either your image or home is in for an overhaul. Don’t worry. We all occasionally suffer a bout of financial insanity, so enjoy.
Stay alert Taurus as this week could be laced with deception. Someone you don’t know very well may try to establish a closer friendship in order to extract a favour. This is fine as long as you know what the game is and play by your own rules. It’s also important to set intentions for the next few months. Create a vision board.
With Mars dozing in your sleepy 12th house, your energy could be flagging. Be gentle with yourself this week, so no bingeing at work or play. You’ll be most productive when you listen to the gentler cues of your body – soak in a hot bath or take an afternoon off if the situation calls for it. Hit the snooze button Gemini.
You may feel like you’re being pulled into many different directions. Perhaps a friend or loved one has a tad too much to say and may try to pull the wool over your eyes. Don’t be fooled by false promises. Think about what it is you want for a change. Take charge and ditch those who don’t support you. You are in control of your life.
Not all negotiations proceed smoothly this week, particularly if you’re pushed into overload. If challenged, try not to exaggerate the situation or facts, as the naked truth has a way of stripping down lies. You’re not being targeted Leo. Troubles can happen to anyone and invariably do. Step cautiously.
Don’t ruffle any feathers this week by speaking up at the wrong time or for the wrong reasons. It’s no use shouting louder than others if what you say isn’t being heard. And be sure to have all the facts before you speak. Listen carefully Virgo and be certain that you have the whole truth before voicing a verbal attack.
For a while now many Librans have suffered uncertainty. However, the universe never asks us to cope with situations we’re not ready for. So when this week brings you to a crisis point, you’ll be surprised at how well you handle the situation – with confidence and very little anxiety. Be proud.
You’re very chatty this week – so unlike you Scorpio. Excited thoughts race around your mind and you can’t wait to share them with anyone who happens to be around. Right now it seems you’re back in touch with every friend or colleague on the planet. Some could also end the week with a fair share of love and luxuries.
If recent events have left you disheartened, remember that few situations are set in stone. When one way is blocked, find another. Everything shifts and changes as the week ahead sets to prove. The cosmos brings joy into your relationships as well as the motivation to find better work prospects.
This week is all about sticking to what you know best. Mercury emphasises routine, so work with what’s familiar. You’ll make up for any lost time soon enough. Also, don’t exaggerate the facts as this may cause misunderstandings. Use tact and charm when faced with dilemmas. Compromise and be prepared to listen to others.
Those close to you are feeling confused by your seemingly distant manner. The real problem is that many Aquarians now feel a tad lost and vulnerable. You’re hiding emotions instead of airing them. Give those worries and fears a voice. It’s time to trust others. A cliché perhaps but a problem shared is a problem halved.

Endless stress has chipped away at the Piscean spirit. Right now a good portion of humanity is feeling very tetchy with many brewing up to a tiff. You could save yourself problems by taking a few days break alone. Sometimes this current call for social isolation comes in handy. The other trick is to become invisible. Tread softly.
Don’t assume you’re the sole trustee of all the right answers and don’t dismiss alternative views before they’re even heard. The planets have sudden shifts of mood and energy this week, and so do you. If there’s anything important you want to discuss or organise, leave it until week’s end. You’re less likely to stir up a hornet’s nest.
You might be a tad snappy this week, especially if someone is trying to steal your glory. Or if someone is behaving badly, jealousy’s probably to blame. Try not to get too caught up in the drama. Romantically, there’s not much stirring in the heavens but, surprisingly, you don’t mind. You definitely need some time to simply chill.
During these confusing times it’s difficult to know what’s really going on. Despite best intentions, what others are saying may be misleading or it could be you who’s being misunderstood. Use this chance to find solutions to problems but don’t overreact to constructive criticism. Perhaps someone’s just trying to be helpful?
Few people will totally agree with your plans this week and may not like what you have to offer. Don’t try to force your views. The best thing is to avoid discussions where you feel questions or accusations are pointed at you. Instead, follow your own dreams and allow others to have theirs. Not everyone beats to the same drum.
It’s strange how things can improve once you decide to surrender your worries to the universe. This next week should bring progress on a matter that’s been causing you worry or discomfort. Ironically, this comes at a time when the issue in question hardly seems to matter. Or so you thought.
Start collecting property listings. Looks like a house move is in your future and you’re primed to make this new living space extra intriguing. However, when it comes to relationships it’s not looking steady. Some Virgos are wondering if they might be better off alone. Where money is concerned, stay prudent. Don’t spend what you can’t afford.
It’s one of those weeks Libra. You’re stressed and really can’t cope with much more. But one of the remarkable things about you is your amazing ingenuity. Sure, there may be a roadblock or two but your innate GPS should instinctively steer you towards unmapped detours. Laughter, too, will help settle any excessive stress.
You become ambitious, with a growing awareness of your special talents. In doing so, unhappy conditions are no longer tolerated. Just don’t assume total authority on every topic. It’s a sure bet that someone with more knowledge will eventually call you to question. In the meantime, bank balances need to stay healthy.
If you’ve been putting off a tough conversation, you might be forced to do just that. Of course you’d prefer to skirt around the facts but this week you can’t escape reality. It’s a sobering time but also a chance to own up to your own culpability. Just don’t try to compensate with your overly caustic wit as your words might seem dark in tone.
You may be tempted to shift the blame onto others and why not when everyone else is doing the same? It’s a week where there’s little room to manoeuvre. No one in particular is at fault. It’s more a case of each for themselves. And you have every right to follow suit. The upside: business and pleasure entwine, delightfully so.
Cooperation comes easily this week. You know which buttons to push to get others moving in the right direction without upsetting their sense of independence. Support comes to you from an unexpected source without you having to ask for it. Even an old rival may come over to your side.

Brownie
In this edition Brownie caught up with Michael and Jenny Doherty who have lived in their little piece of Glass House Mountains’ paradise since 2011, after moving from a life of farming at Kingaroy. There is nothing Brownie enjoys more than having a sticky beak around someone else’s garden and sharing some of their gardening secrets and successes with readers. See story page 27.

Hedging their bets IF you’ve ever been to the town of Railton in Tasmania, you’ll know why it’s called the town of topiary. Derived from the Latin word for an ornamental landscape gardener, topiarius, the practice of topiary dates back to the Romans and was perfected by the ancient Chinese and Japanese. In more recent times in modern Europe, ornate hedging has become an essential part of every grand aristocratic estate.
“I’ve always been keen on creating and maintaining hedges, and when we moved into our house here Jenny saw the potential of the existing plants if they had a bit of attention,” Michael said. “Jenny has the artistic eye and I like the practice involved in shaping and maintaining plants and shrubs, transforming them into architectural forms.” Michael’s pride and joy are the perfect hedges bordering their immaculately maintained backyard garden, plus the perfect mushroomlike topiaries that entice you to touch them, like they have some ur magical properties over your imagination. g Michael says that hedging and shaping isn’t hard, butt there are some basic rules he suggests: • Choose a plant that g responds well to clipping ng by reshooting and growing nd more branches, stems and leaves. Not all plants are ts suitable. Small leaf plants work better than large leaf plants.
The art of good hedging is becoming one of the vanishing skills of modern horticulture but there are some who have the patience and skills to expertly wield a set of hedging shears. Michael and Jenny Doherty have lived in their little piece of Glass House Mountains’ paradise since 2011, after moving from a life of farming at Kingaroy. No strangers to gardening, they had established a three-acre house garden on their farm before moving to Glasshouse Country. Michael was a respected local gardening and lawnmowing business owner before recently retiring.
• Pla Plant hedging spe species close to a wall 3030-40cm off the wall and clip early and often to encourage bushiness. • Keep the hedge less than a metre wide, otherwise clipping the top square can be difficult and tiring on the arms. • If you need to cut something back low to start again, cut it way below the height you want it to grow to. For example, if you want it at fence height, don’t cut it off at that height; cut it half-way down the fence or lower.
garden
• Leave space along the front so you can walk along to do the clipping and use the clippings as garden mulch. • If you have a lot to do, you’ll need a motorised hedge clipper. Michael suggests you buy to your budget but he has found that the cheaper battery-operated brands work well for most situations. The end result of Michael’s efforts is that they now have an outdoor area that is both functional, attractive and a real talking point when people visit. “It’s a real labour of love for Michael,” Jenny says. “Sometimes I think it’s an obsession but I’m very proud of what he’s created and how stunning it looks.”

Record holding residents IN 2020 two Beerwah locals were awarded Guinness World Records - Rhino the rhinoceros iguana and Forest the giraffe, who both live at Australia Zoo. Rhino, who has called our local zoo home since 1993, is the oldest living rhino iguana in captivity (born on February 23 1980) and was 40 years 278 days old on November 27, 2020. Guinness World Records said: “This almost doubles the age of the previous greatest lifespan on record for rhino iguanas of just under 23 years old.” In July last year, Forest the giraffe was recorded as the world’s tallest living giraffe. Terri Irwin said the zoo’s two world records were an incredible accomplishment and that they could not be more proud to celebrate these milestones with both Forest and Rhino.

End of an era for local herb club AFTER 38½ years, the ElimbahCaboolture Herb Club held its last meeting on Friday, February 5. Club president Ruth English is the remaining foundation member. She said the decline in membership over recent times – and an ageing membership as well – meant that it was too difficult to keep the club formally functioning. In recent years, the club has met monthly at the Police Citizens Youth Club (PCYC) in Caboolture but before that they met in the old dining hall of the Caboolture Showground. “It was a sad day when we finally said goodbye to the PCYC, which has been a wonderful venue for our meetings,” Ruth said. “We’ve had many wonderful speakers and presenters at the meetings and we’ve been a regular feature at the Caboolture Show for many years.” In fact, they were often complimented on their herb display with show judges saying that their display items would have won if they were included as entries in the horticultural competition categories. “Herbs are a wonderful and often essential part of life,” Ruth said.
HAS YOUR ROOF BEEN DAMAGED BY THE RECENT HAIL STORM? Ascent Building Solutions are your local Metal Roofing Specialists “We use them in cooking, in medicine, in art and craft, and for their visual beauty in the garden. “I’d like to thank all the past members for their contribution to the club over the years, as well as to the talented presenters who freely gave their time to speak at the meetings. “I’d like to especially thank the PCYC for their generous assistance and use of the facilities over the years, and for their wonderful work with local youth.” The club had some funds left in the kitty that will be donated to worthy local causes including the Caboolture Show Society and the Caboolture PCYC.

The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker
THE last Thursday in January was marked by a visit from Ted Singleton, club patron and founding member, who enjoyed a good win with Sarah Widin against Donna Manning and Vince Carbery 17–9. Val Carbery and Gillian Bradley defeated Kath Smith and Janelle Wilson 15-7. Wallace Roy and Lynette Evans were soundly beaten by Alice Spittle and Bev Sockhill 6-15. On Sunday, January 31, Kath and Donna were beaten by Val and Vince 16-21. Nick Cram showed good form to beat Sarah 18–7. Helen Andrews rescued Wallace from his losing streak by teaming up with him to beat Stuart Craig and Alice Spittle 12–9. In the match of the day, Priscilla Vickers narrowly edged out Janelle 8–7. Our two lawns were at capacity on the first Thursday of February. Ken Barker and Val teamed up against Donna, scoring 17 hoops to her 7. Also on lawn one, Priscilla and Janelle put in some valuable team practice for the Bray Shield competition scoring against Lynette and Gillian 8-3. Sally Adams and Kath fought hard against Bev Sockhill and Helen, unluckily going down 8–11; while Wallace and Alice showed a complete lack of chivalry to defeat newcomer Kerry Lyons and her partner Sarah 13-6. Welcome to the club Kerry. Hot weather kept players away on Sunday, February 7, though out on the
Maleny Golf Club TUESDAY, February 2: The club held a mixed stableford competition with many golfers playing. First place went to Merv Schulz 39 points, runner up Neil Stenhouse 36 points and third Ron Smith 33 points. Players in the ball run-down were Steevie Marriner, Rod Thamm, Jon Fairman, Don Lemon and Ian Clark. Wednesday, February3: A mixed stableford competition was held with first place to Jan Johnston 35 points and runner up Corey Zammit 32 points. The ladies also played on Wednesday in a stableford competition with first place to Margaret Trigger 30 points, runner up Christine Lemon 29 points, on a count back from Janice Emmett

lawn with a breeze blowing it wasn’t too bad. Wallace and Helen, with Wallace pegging his red ball out, defeated Janelle and Lynette 21-7. Nick and Sarah played a good game against Ken, unfortunate to lose 12-7. Our excellent, well cared for lawns are on the right-hand side of the Maleny Showground. Play days are Thursdays and Sundays at 2pm for 2.30pm. Contact Sarah Widin for other days. Coaching is available on Saturday mornings at 8am. Beerwah Ladies Golf Contributed by Brenda Briese So far the weather has caused a few changes but we have welcome the rain, the dams are full and the fairways green … what more can we ask for? Thursday, January 28: This was a ‘fun’(?) day where we played with three clubs and a putter. It all comes down to the choice of clubs you make … I think. The division 1 winner was Elaine Egerton 74 nett from Lyn Steele 78 nett. Division 2 winner was Gail Murphy 78 nett from Maureen Hampshire 80 nett. BRD went to 81 nett. Thursday, February 4: Our first monthly medal with 47 players. Division 1 was winner Sonia Kenway 75 nett from Camilla Dwyer 78 nett. Division 1 gross winner was Andrea Campbell 89 gross. Division 2 winner was Dianne Flint 71 nett followed by Vikki Bartel 75 nett. Division 2 gross winner was Jenny Smith 100 gross. Division 3 winner was Carolyn Chestnut 74 nett from Penny Brewster 78 nett. Division 3 gross winner was Bridget John 111. BRD to 78. Saturday, February 6: A medal round with a good field of 28 ladies. Winner with a nice score of 68 nett was Karen Gannon followed by Sonia Kenway 72 nett. Gross winner was Jo Malone 80 off the stick. BRD went to 81 nett.

Karen Gannon Thursday, February 11: We played a ‘secret partners’ 4bbb stableford with 50 players. Winners were Pauline Coyne and Leith Barnes on 43 points from Andrea Campbell and Cheryl Jepson on 42points. BRD to 40 points.
Wallace Roy celebrating pegging out his red ball
29 points, and third Heather Shortus 28 points, on a count back from Debbie Hansen 28 points. Saturday, February 6: The club held a mixed stableford competition with first place to Carey Catherall 36 points, runner up Jack Day 35 points, on a count back from Paul Griffin 35 points, third Heath Gray 34 points on count backs from Mitchell Early, Garth Bailo, Stephen Smith, Peter Gilbert and Mike Finley, all with 34 points. It still looks like rain and we will keep mowing lawns but golf is always there for that break in the weather. To play a round phone our clubhouse on 5499 9960 or go to our website www.malenygolfclub.com and book in.

Maleny Bowls Contributed by Miles Allen Our Wednesday night Twilight Bowls competition has seen three teams creep to the top of the table. The Amigos, Three Flamingos and RPT have all gained maximum points from the five games but there’s plenty of time left with eight more games to play. Mo and her Marauders, Pegasus, the Golfers and the Wot Notts are not far behind. And nothing is certain until the last bowl is bowled. At the Scroungers monthly competition two weeks ago, this was definitely the case. Brett Gillis had a good chance of winning but Ben Fawns delivered a wonderful last bowl to pick up two points and win the competition by a whisker. John Williams was the gallant bronze medallist. In last week Scroungers winners were Don Ginns, Mick Bulger, Marilyn Podmore, John Williams and Marg Ginns. The handicapper has adjusted their points accordingly. We sent a team to Kilcoy to play in their monthly fours’ competition where the Maleny team of Graeme Glover, John
sport Williams, Jim Wiedman and Miles Allen came first and so came home richer and happy. Our volunteers at the club have once again generously and regularly put in their time and effort to do a myriad of jobs to ensure the club is ready for bowlers and all-comers. The green is rolled and smoothed (Dave Edwards); the food is cooked and served to perfection (Tony Yorkson, Steve Porter, Ben Fawns, Judith Lees, Trish Edwards and Liz Williams); and the bar is stocked and drinks are served (John Williams, Bryan Fripp, Dave Coffey, Judith Lees, Ray Elmore). Secretary Jim Wiedman has played a critical role in overseeing all the administration and licensing requirements and has ensured we have met every COVID requirement during the last 12 months. And behind all this work and our volunteers has been Graeme Glover – coordinating, liaising, encouraging and ensuring that everything that needs to be done is done, and all goes as smoothly as possible. We hope to see you at our club soon.

Cleo came to us after her owners had to move away. She is a really lovely natured girl who will soak up any attention given to her, but is not overly needy or demanding either. Cleo loves to sit by your side, but is not so keen on being picked up, she would be best suited to a retirement home where she can laze about sleeping in the light of the afternoon sun. Cleo is up to date with all her vet work and is looking for her forever home now.

Marvin is a shy little guy who needs an experienced dog owner to help boost his confidence. He has a very sweet personality and he’d love to learn his basic obedience; he loves slow introductions with other dogs. Being a puppy, Marvin will still do all those naughty things such as chew, dig and destroy until he’s a little older. Marvin would do best in homes where his owner is home more often enough to start with so they can work with him every day. Like any dog, Marvin will need secure fencing to ensure he is kept safe at home. With all his vet work completed, Marvin is ready to go today.

JuSt for LaughS For Star Wars fans
Obi Wan Kenobi decides he wants a change of pace so decides to put his skills into becoming a marriage councillor. One day a familiar face pops in - Luke Skywalker. Luke sits down and immediately bursts into tears as his new wife is absolutely awful. For three hours Luke talks, almost non-stop, about all the horrible things she does to him - putting green milk in his cereal, signing him up to the Jar-Jar fan club, telling him he’s got a head like a mynock. Eventually he stops and says: “So old friend, what ... what should I do?” Obi Wan is stumped for a moment, rubs
his chin wisely, then offers his advice. “Use divorce, Luke”.
Technically correct?
A teacher says to a student: “Give me a sentence about a public service.” “The fireman came down the ladder pregnant,” the student says. The teacher politely asks the student: “Umm ...do you know what pregnant means?” “Yes,” said the student. “It means carrying a child.”
