Hi Everyone Well finally we have a winner - yes the counting has been completed and the new Councillor for Division 1 is Pick Rick. Well that is what many locals now refer to Rick Baberowski as - looks like his election branding might stick. However as he will be sworn into office this week I guess we had better get used to calling him Cr Baberowski. And as the new door into the world of Local Government opens for Cr Baberowski one closes for former Councillor Grosskreutz, who will now be known as Mrs Anna Egmollesse of the Clarence Valley, NSW. After 17 years in the job, Anna is really looking forward to some time out before she takes on any new challenges. Kylie spent some time with her this week talking about the highlights of her time in the job and the

transition she is now making in her life (see story page 5). And I imagine for the four other candidates that have thrown themselves into the task of campaigning over the past 12 months – they also will have been doing plenty of soul searching and looking at where to next for them. I have to say I think it is a pretty courageous thing today to put yourself out there as a candidate for an election – and while there can be only one winner – it has definitely been an eye opener to follow the passion and determination of each candidate in trying to be the one out front, at the end of voting. Regards,

Polls declared as final votes counted Eleven days after ratepayers across the region went to the polls, the results are finally in, with Rick Baberowski now officially declared the new councillor for Division 1, and Jenny McKay being returned in Division 5. Literally only hours after the results being declared, Rick Baberowski was keen to pass on a huge thanks to the communities of Division 1. Rick said he was pleased by the results from all the booths, which showed the support of the community was widespread, taking out the primary vote in more than half of the polling booths across the division. “I am so proud of my supporters and my family, and I would particularly like to acknowledge my son Huxley, who showed tremendous insight into the politics of electioneering,” Rick said. Rick said he was also grateful to those members of the business community who displayed his signage, and acknowledged the strong campaigns of fellow candidates, Bob McLean and Ann Ross, who had both congratulated him on his win. He said one of his first priorities as councillor would be to lift the standard of maintenance across the division, particularly in hinterland townships like Glass House. “One of the unifying concerns that was made apparent to me by ratepayers was the state of the road network, and it’s obvious that some areas urgently require reconstruction, rather than ongoing costly repairs,” he said. He said the final weeks of the campaign highlighted the need for the community to not tolerate the smear tactics.

“It’s important that the community don’t accept that smear campaigns are an acceptable part of the democratic process, and hopefully people have seen through it,” he said. In Division 5, sitting councillor Jenny McKay was returned with a healthy majority. I am absolutely delighted with being re-elected with over 73 per cent of the vote,” Cr McKay said. “I believe that these results show that my division has given me a clear indication that they have confidence in my ability to make their voices heard in Council.” Cr McKay said her first priority would be to continue to fight for the upgrade to the railway line and to improve on the road infrastructure. She also said she will be petitioning the new mayor to support the rural road sealing program. “I am humbled by the support of the communities I represent and I would like to thank them wholeheartedly for giving me the opportunity to keep on working for them to improve services and facilities for the hinterland,” she said.

Meet Max Chapman. Many Glass House locals might recognise Max, but you might be more likely to recognise him when he’s sitting on the back of a horse. Earlier this month, Max came to the attention of the broader Sunshine Coast region when he was awarded the inaugural ‘Peace Out’ award for his work with and passion for horses. Max says horses are in his blood, and it’s no doubt an extension of his passion that has seen him teach local children who might otherwise not be fortunate enough, to learn to ride. The former mounted policeman, who retired in Glass House with wife Elaine around seven years ago, is the custodian of three horses, and can be found down at the paddock on Coonowrin Road feeding, grooming and exercising them twice a day. He has also lea the local Anzac Day parades with two of his steads for the past two years. The ex-racing thoroughbreds, Scoldy, Mandrake and Rocky, were headed for the abattoir when Max rescued them and restored their health. Today, despite their age (Scoldy is 23, Mandrake is 20, and Rocky is 15), the horses are fit and healthy, thanks to the years of Max’s dedication and care. This horse lover is also known to help out other horse-owners in the area who may have behavioural or other problems with their horses. He sees it as simply retraining them out of bad habits, but it’s obvious his passion runs much deeper. “My wife reckons she would get more attention if she had four legs,” he jokes. But at the end of the day, Max admits Scoldy, Mandrake and Rocky are his mates, and he loves them. While he isn’t an active campaigner, Max can’t stand to see horses sent off to abattoirs once they have served their purpose, but despite his passion, he is aware of his limitations, as horses aren’t cheap. The cost of feeding them alone is $80.00 a week, and together with the costs of farriers, vets and regular grooming, his is an

Max with Scoldy, Mandrake and Rocky expensive hobby. But the joy he shares in their company, and the joy they bring to others in the community, is well worth the effort, he said. He’s quick to note the support of the local community, who have over the years also shown the extent of their appreciation for his passion for the horses. This includes two former students, Jasmine Ruhle and Melissa Post, who as well as being fellow horse lovers, help out with caring for the horses, particularly when Max isn’t able to. Another well known local, retired farmer Barry Fullerton, owns the land the horses are kept on, and hasn’t charged Max a single penny. Just last week, a local couple who were driving by the paddock on Coonowrin Road stopped and offered to donate a bag of food every fortnight, after hearing about Max’s care and compassion for the horses, an act of generosity that blew him away. “I don’t do it for any reward or recognition, but simply because I have such a special bond with them,” he said. “I care for these horses because I love doing it, but it’s heartening to see others in the community reach out and help,” he said.

Local couple celebrate milestone

Family and friends recently helped John and Pam Innes celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary. As well as the many lovely cards they received, were congratulatory messages from HR Queen Elizabeth, Governor General Quetin Bryce, Prime Minister Julia Gillard and MPs Peter Slipper and Wyatt Roy. Their four children watched John and Pam cut the raspberry and white chocolate cake made by their daughter Wendy and granddaughter Elena. It was accompanied by cup cakes made of the same recipe.

Most of John and Pam Innes' family were able to join them for their Diamond wedding celebration

Retiring councillor reflects on a successful career When retiring Division 1 councillor Anna Grosskreutz, or Mrs Eggmolesse, as she is now known, arrived at a farewell morning tea in her honour earlier this month, she had to spend a few moments in the car to collect herself, and wipe away the tears.

“I was simply overwhelmed by the emotion I felt for this community that I have been part of for so long,” Anna said. And while she says it only seems like yesterday that she started her 17 year career in local government, it’s only been in the last few days that she has had the chance to reflect. “It’s like I’ve been so busy being busy that I feel I haven’t had the chance to stop and smell the roses.” It’s been a career full of highlights and emotional achievements, such as the reopening of the Peachester cemetery, and the official opening of Beerwah’s Library and community hall, that will remain with her when she leaves the region this week to begin a new life with husband Russell in the Clarence Valley, in northern New South Wales. Anna said she knew when she made the decision not to run at the 2012 local government elections that it was the right one. “I was at a point where I wanted to spend more time with my husband and my family, when you start to realise just how important time is,” Anna said. She said she remembers how she and her family were embraced by the local community when they first arrived here, around 25 years ago.

Anna with Nev Anning at the farewell morning tea I’ve always known that when the going got too tough, I could count on this region to band together in support, and that is what representing people is all about,” she said. “I knew in my heart that when I stood up to represent my community, that I was representing Team Glasshouse Country, and no one could be prouder than that.” But she has no plans to make a political comeback when she settles into her new community. It seems, however, that the locals in Clarence Valley may have different ideas for Anna, who they have already fondly nicknamed Mrs Katter, in honour of her large white gardening hat that she has often been seen wearing by her new neighbours. And what does she think about that? “I think it’s wonderful. I’ve already received such a warm response from the locals, it’s a community not unlike Glasshouse, and I feel like I’m home.”

Third annual Glass House Volunteer Awards

Last Wednesday, Andrew Powell MP, hosted the third annual Glass House Volunteer Awards that have been designed to recognise the hard work of volunteers in the Glass House electorate.

“Volunteers truly are the lifeblood of any community - they are the ones that keep things ticking over and in some cases they are just not thanked enough for the vital role they play," Mr Powell said. The Glass House Volunteer Awards are an annual event held to coincide with National Volunteers Week. Mr Powell invites community groups, Andrew Powell with Glasshouse Country volunteers. Photo courtesy schools, churches and sporting groups Australia Zoo from across the electorate to submit a nomination for one of their outstanding All nominees are presented with a certificate of volunteers. thanks and appreciation. "The Glass House Volunteer Awards are in their third year and as the nominations started rolling in I was thrilled to see so many community groups taking the opportunity to recognise these hardworking volunteers. "What is really special about this annual ceremony is the smile we get to see on the faces of those who are recognised. Seeing how proud they are to be acknowledged in this small way is one of the most rewarding parts of being a local member," Mr Andrew Powell with the Australia Zoo Powell said.

When is the perfect time to get a family Portrait? By Lea Parkes

GCNews recently spoke to local photographer Kathy Hill of Whisper Images and we got talking about when the best time is to get a family portrait. Apparently there are plenty of reasons (or excuses) for delaying getting your photos taken, and Kathy has heard them all from not being able to afford them at the moment, to wanting to lose weight, get their hair done, having their braces taken off, or when the baby is older. However, Kathy has learnt a sad lesson that sometimes you don’t always have the luxury of ‘down the track’ so her advice is don’t put off creating a beautiful family memory. “My nephew, Logan, was diagnosed with cancer just weeks after his sixth birthday, we lost him three weeks before he turned seven,” Kathy said. “While my sister has about 9,000 photos that were taken during his short life – with plenty of happy snaps from birthdays, days at the beach etc, but they are all taken by her or her husband therefore never included them all in the picture. “The few that did have all of them were snapped on a phone and so while they are still nice photos of great times, they are sadly lacking in quality and clarity. “Of course hindsight is a great thing but in its absence, my sister is sad that there are not more images with all of the family in clear good quality photos,” said Kathy. “The fact that we live about 1100km away from each other means that I wasn't able to make the family photos happen as often as we would have liked. “However if there can be a positive side to this, my sister has thrown herself into fundraising for

Childrens' Cancer research and several of the supporting services which rely 100 per cent on donations. “Last year, in just six months, she raised over $56,000 and this year she is planning to top that. The Logan Wells Foundation Inc has just been launched to assist families with children with Cancer,” said Kathy. Kathy is doing her bit to help by doing what she knows best - fabulous lifetime memories in the form of beautiful family portraits. Instead of the usual session fee of $165.00 it will be just $60.00 with $40.00 going to the Logan Wells Foundation. “You will receive a 5x7 inch enlargement of your choice and further images may also be purchased if you wish,” Kathy said As for those excuses, don’t let them get in the way of a permanent family record! And remember if it's braces or acne standing in the way, there is plenty that Kathy can do to pose you in the best position and digital editing can also help. So, when is the perfect time for a family Portrait? Honestly? It's right now! So if you want to seize the day and get your family portrait done give Kathy a call on 5494 9555 or mobile 0409 049 074 or you might want to check out her fabulous work on www.whisperimages.com.au

Gowinta defends decision to outsource seasonal workers Last week, one of the region’s largest farms, Gowinta Farms, came under fire after announcing plans to scrap its seasonal workforce in favour of moving to contract workers. Managing director Len Smith said the decision was made simply to try and keep his business afloat. “Like many businesses, we’ve been finding things very tough, and need to make business decisions to keep the business operational,” he said. Len said the decision to outsource seasonal workers was a business decision which wouldn’t affect his wages cost, but would mean savings in administration. He said contractual workers are paid ‘piece’ rates, which were equivalent to award wages. “In previous years, only eight per cent of our seasonal workforce were Australians, the rest were foreigners, mainly from Europe and Asia,” Len said. He said his efforts to keep Aussie jobs on the farm went far and above what many other businesses had done. “I built a caravan park to try and lure the grey nomads, but things haven’t worked out, there just doesn’t seem to be the numbers of travellers available to do the seasonal work.” Len said all of the 30 seasonal workers affected by the decision were given the option to apply for other positions; however most had not taken up the opportunity. For more on what Len had to say about his decision to contract out his seasonal workforce, visit Gowinta Farms website at www.gowinta. com.au

Tour de Cure’s pitstop at Landsborough

A mum in a million

Every mum is special and deserves to be treated that way so Prep students at Glasshouse Country Christian College spent one night last week showering their mums with love and attention. The annual Prep mothers’ night began with students making tiaras and crowns for their princess mums before having their photo taken on the royal throne. The young boys and girls couldn’t wait to crawl onto their mum’s lap and cuddle up for a special photo opportunity. After the photo sessions, the mums were led by their children to one of the three Prep rooms for some fun activities, singing and poetry. Some of the mums learned how to use the interactive white boards while others proudly listened as their child explained how the programs worked on the computer. The night finished with a sumptuous supper brought in by the mothers and staff of GCCC. About 50 mums attended the Prep night and each of them was a mum in a million.

Approximately 65 cyclists participating in the Tour de Cure ride recently pedalled in to visit Landsborough State School. It was the first day of their 11 day gruelling journey cycling from Brisbane to Mission Beach, a distance of 1,656 kms. Along the way, riders aimed to visit 5,000 school students and Landsborough State School was fortunate enough to be chosen as one of their enroute stops. The entire school gathered for Students farewell the cyclists as they leave a special assembly to hear ride Landsborough participants spread the message about cancer prevention and a healthy lifestyle. It was an inspirational visit which left the school community buzzing with excitement. Students lined the walkways to clap and cheer as the cyclists departed Landsborough to continue on the long journey ahead. Tour de Cure is a cycling foundation dedicated to raising funds for the fight against cancer. Since 2007, the Tour de Cure has raised in excess of $6 million to help fund vital cancer research, support and prevention projects. Their target for 2012 is to raise $2 million. Where is the Green Sheep? A recent international study indicated that 82 per cent of parents wished their children would read more books for fun and with this in mind Sunshine Coast Council is launching a Kids Only Library Card campaign to increase memberships for young children across the Coast. Library and Gallery Services Manager Ross Duncan said council is inviting local primary schools, kindergartens, childcare centres and playgroups to participate in the 2012 Kids Only Library Card campaign.

He said an exciting element of the campaign, and an Australian first, has seen council secure the rights to use images from the much loved Mem Fox book ‘Where is the Green Sheep?’ on the front of the new Kids Only Library Card. Each time a child visits their library they will receive a stamp on their loyalty card and when they have three stars they can enter to win one of 13 sets of ‘Where is the Green Sheep?' book and stuffed toy kits.

GCCC Open Day – just for you! Glasshouse Country Christian College is holding its Open Day on Saturday, May 19 between 10.00am and 2.00pm and the whole community is invited! Find out why GCCC has grown from 15 students when it began in 2000 to the 770 who are currently enrolled from Prep to Year 12. The event is for everyone – from the mildly curious to parents planning their child’s education journey. GCCC Open Day is the perfect time to chat to the Principal and management team, tour the campus, meet the teachers, and be impressed by talented and helpful GCCC students. There will be music, dance, drama and cheerleading performances throughout the day as well as street theatre, student work displays in the classrooms and exciting ‘Magic of Science’ shows. GCCC’s hospitality students are serving a free freshly baked scone or a piece of chocolate cake for all visitors, the P and F are running a sausage sizzle and the new GCCC tuckshop will also be open with goodies and refreshments.

Children can enter the Eagle Hunt competition or learn about College values in the lollipop fishing game. Everyone has the chance to visit the patch to plate Kitchen Garden to plant their very own bean seed to take home. The College is planning a mission trip to Fiji in the June/July holidays so a monster garage sale and car wash are being held on the day to raise funds for the Fiji Bible College. GCCC’s Open Day is about providing a helpful and accessible service to families looking for quality Christian education for their children. It is a great opportunity to meet the Principal and management team and ask questions about the College. The event is being held on a Saturday to make it easier for working families to attend. One of the most commonly asked questions of the Registrar is, 'Is there still room?' The answer is yes but families are strongly urged to apply as early as possible as some of the year levels do fill fast.

Joy from serving the community

I have been involved in community service for most of my adult life. This type of activity usually means you become fair game as you don’t get it 100 per cent correct every time. The best part is you can manage to do some good for someone. The past six months has been a new experience for me as a candidate for local government on the Sunshine Coast. I have met and spoken with so many wonderful people I would not have had the opportunity to meet had I not embarked on this journey. The residents of Division 1 have been the winners out of the process. The five candidates had one common focus, to move into the next level of community service. Local government in my view is not about politics because every councillor is an individual representing a group of communities, all with different needs and outcomes to be negotiated. We need a strong community identity on which we can continue to grow; the new councillor will be required to drive this growth, that can’t be achieved alone. The residents have an obligation of identifying the needs of how you want all of our communities to look and develop while contributing to the outcome. It was very disappointing to see the numbers of residents of division 1 who did not vote (2,945) or chose to vote informally (793), a total of 3,738 voters out of 16,762, (22 per cent), to make this choice indicates to me we have not got things right. Another issue that concerned and intimidated voters was the way they were harassed when entering the polling places, by well-meaning and enthusiastic booth workers. This confrontation was like having to run the gauntlet. We must do better next time. I congratulate and thank all the candidates and their supporters for the time, commitment and dedication contributed to ask Rick to represent division 1 at this pinnacle of community service. Keep the bridge open

The Sunshine Coast Council are intending to close and remove the Tower Lane Bridge in Beerwah, on completion of the Coochin Twins Estate. Foot access will be via a Carnarvon Road extension leading to Old Gympie Road. I do admit yes this bridge is run down from the flooding we have received in the past two years, but it is very important to the estates that live around it. This bridge means a lot to everybody, not only the Noonan residents that access this bridge to get to and from work, but also to the families and 14

children that access it to go into town. I myself use this bridge to get to work when my parents cannot take me, and also on occasion to get to and from school. I know for a fact a lot of children use it to get to and from school during the week. I do not see why they can't just fix it, it does get used, they just don't look at it from our perspective. So please, contact the council and help us keep this bridge open! Email the council on mail@sunshinecoast. qld.gov.au Allana Lacey Beerwah

Landsborough’s Biggest Morning Tea

It is once again time for Australia's Biggest Morning Tea! Every year the Landsborough School of Arts Memorial Hall Management Committee hosts an event to raise funds to support the fight against breast cancer. Our event is very successful and not only draws our community together for a fun event but also raises a substantial sum of money for the appeal. Thanks to the generosity of the wider Landsborough and district community, our event is one of the biggest fundraisers on the Sunshine Coast! This year our morning tea will be held on Wednesday, May 30 at the hall, commencing at 9.00am. We will have the morning tea followed by a cent auction at 10.00am. The Down Under craft group which meets at the hall each Wednesday morning has once again pieced together a beautiful quilt which will be raffled. The craft group also assists on the day with setting up, the morning tea and manning stalls. The management Committee acknowledges their generous assistance. We are also asking for your help. Traditionally we hold a mini cent auction as part of our event. This is very popular, a lot of fun and raises the bulk of the funds. We ask that you assist by donating a prize for the cent auction. Your donation, no matter how small will greatly assist us on the day. Many people are kind enough to give us a small donation which we are able to bundle up into lots, whilst others are able to give us bigger prizes which become our major draw prizes. We endeavour to acknowledge as many donors as possible on the day. If you are able to assist in any way please phone Shirley Ruhle on 5494 1686 and she will arrange delivery/collection of the prize. We appreciate your consideration of our request in what we know is a tough economic climate. We feel very fortunate to live in such a supportive community. Shirley Ruhle Event coordinator

What's going on?

One of my regular walks from Peachester is the Mt Beerwah Road to Mt Beerwah. It is usually in pretty bad nick and used mainly by trail bike riders, walkers and horses as best I can tell. Today we were walking it and were surprised by two things. Firstly, the road has been widened and appears to have been graded. Secondly, someone has been having a ball with their chainsaw and dropping trees at regular intervals across the road. It looks like someone doesn't like someone else using the road! If they are trying to stop the trail bikes, good luck, as they just go around or over. It's quite comical apart from the fact that a lot of money is being spent by someone and their work is being sabotaged by someone else. At who's expense? Can anyone shed any light on this? Peter Gawith Peachester

Kiss Goodbye to MS

For those of you unaware of this disease, here’s a part of my story of the last two years. Multiple Sclerosis is an auto-immune disease that affects the central nervous system. It is unknown

what causes MS and so far there is no cure, although research continues. The nerves can be likened to an electrical wire, with the myelin sheath that protects the nerves being the plastic that surrounds the wire. The body's immune system attacks the myelin, exposing the nerves. So you may think you're moving your toe, for example, but it doesn't actually happen. The most common form of MS is relapsing remitting MS where the sufferer will experience new symptoms and then pretty much go back to the way they were, although there are common symptoms that most MSers have to live with. I have a particularly aggressive form of primary progressive MS where there is no remission and the list of problems appears to be ever-increasing. I can only hope those scientists work real hard and find me a cure. I was diagnosed five years ago and at last I seem to have remained stable. I’ve now started hydrotherapy and can see an improvement already. The research and trials continue and there is a lot to be positive about. Unfortunately I was too high on the disability scale for stem cell treatment last year and at the moment I don’t make the criteria for CCSVI (chronic cerebrospinal veinous insufficiency) treatment. It is thought that impaired drainage in the brain and spinal cord is thought to cause MS. Huge amounts of research and trials are happening all the time and I remain confident that once there is sufficient success on patients with early stages of relapsing remitting MS, trials will lead to treatment of those of us with more aggressive forms of the disease. In the last year the latest casualty of the disease has been my 20 year marriage. Depression, marriage breakdowns and suicides are common in MS and I’m fortunate to have retained my cognitive function and sense of humour. Unfortunately property settlement won’t be easy because Disability Services Queensland has nowhere for me to go. For now I’m in the family home, which has been modified to be fully wheelchair accessible for me, but surviving on the pension, I have no way of buying the home. I have MS but MS doesn’t have me and I stubbornly refuse to go down without a fight. I’m saving my pennies for a wheelchair accessible vehicle because DSQ no longer provides taxis for visits to my neurologist and physiotherapy. A carer told me the other day that disabled clients of hers have been parasailing and I told her I’ve always wanted to do that. She asked what else I wanted to do and I said skydiving. Apparently I can do that too! Sharon Chamberlain Glass House Mountains Eds Note: May is MS Awareness Month. For more information about this disease, which affects over 21,000 Australians, visit the website at www. kissgoodbyetoms.org

Cancer Council thanks its volunteers

In celebration of National Volunteer Week this week (May 14 - 20), Cancer Council Queensland would like to thank its dedicated volunteers and fundraisers. Volunteers are vital to our work for cancer patients. This month we’ll be honouring volunteers at Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea events state-wide. Please join a local event and help us to win the fight against cancer. On National Volunteer Week we welcome new volunteers who want to make a commitment to a cancer free Queensland. Call us on 13 11 20 and get involved today! Once again, thank you to our local volunteers for your heroic support. We couldn’t do it without you! Beerwah library is opposite the Woolworths Shopping Centre in Beerwah. Next time you are in the vicinity, drive in, there is plenty of parking. The library with its super-helpful staff is well worth a visit. Then wander between the library and Community Hall, down a small boardwalk to access Turner Park. This is a little gem, so quiet and peaceful, with water and bird- life. Note also the facilities for children or groups.

More tractor tales on the way Contributed by Dr Graeme Quick, CPE Peachester

A surprising thing happened on the way to the office today. I collected the GCNews (May 9 edition) and was pleased to see the piece on page 14 where there's a picture of Lucas and David Terrey absorbed in reading my book, ‘Tall But True Tractor Tales’. They won the book from a competition in GCNews. So thank you GCNews. And incidentally, if readers have any unusual /daggy tractor stories or comments on that book, do let me know, I'm working on a second edition! Contact me at g.quick@bigpond.com

That first edition, which is selling like hot potatoes out of the Beerwah Newsagency, has three stories about local residents including Nev Anning's amazing story from his Singapore days as a "guest of the Emperor". Yes, believe it or not, Nev Anning has a tractor story from his time as a POW. Thanks Nev, and thanks again GCNews.

Chappy's leap of faith Contributed by Kylie Gillespie

When Mooloolah State School farewelled Chappy Dave at the end of Term 1, the school community presented Chappy with a farewell gift of a skydive voucher with Sunshine Coast Skydivers! At the time Dave said, "I will be very nervous but very excited to take the jump. It will be a once in a lifetime moment." Well, the date has been set! Chappy's jump is booked, and he is expected to be landing on the beach in Caloundra after 9.30am this Sunday, May 20. Chappy Dave invited everyone to come and cheer him on when he lands. The landing beach will depend on wind conditions on Sunday, so phone Sunshine Coast Skydivers on 0418 776 775 on Sunday morning after 7.30am to find out which beach. There may be a surprise in store for those planning to be there! It has been rumoured that Chappy's good friend, Superhero Chapman may be making a flying appearance! Come along and help cheer the locallylegendary duo. www.gcnews.com.au

Things 2 Do

Out and About

Get creative behind the lens

The popular tale of the one that got away A recent survey has revealed that fishing remains one of the more popular recreational activities, with approximately 700,000 Queenslanders participating in fishing, crabbing or prawning. The Statewide Recreational Fishing Survey shows

that the participation rate of 17 per cent is much higher than that of other popular outdoor activities such as golf, cycling and swimming, so we thought we would ask local anglers where the best spots are to land a good catch.

Fifteen-year-old Peter from Glass House, who said he usually fishes every couple of weeks, heads to Coochin Creek, Maroochy River and Donnybrook, and is also known to put his pots in local dams for red claw.

Stuart, 23, from Glass House, doesn’t get out fishing as much as he would like to, but heads to the Pumicestone Passage for mangrove jack, flathead and jew fish.

Warren, 48, from Glass House, said over the 12 years he’s lived in the area, he has seen fish numbers decline in the local estuaries, a factor which he attributes to the run off from farms. He said Coochin Creek and Hussey Creek used to be popular fishing spots, but as the health of the waterways have declined, so have fish numbers.

Jodie, 40, from Glass House, who works at Glass House IGA, said weekends were popular with local anglers, who came in for their ice, drinks and snacks before heading out for a spot of fishing. She said there were still plenty of fishermen who head down to the boat ramp at Coochin Creek and the inlets, returning with flathead and whiting.

Last week I held the third annual Glass House Volunteer Awards which are design to recognise the hard work of the many volunteers in our community. It gives me great pleasure each year to be able to publicly acknowledge and thank our volunteers for the vital role they play in our community. In total we had over 60 nominations from across the Glass House electorate this year, many of those from the Glasshouse Mountains region. Some of the local groups recognised were the Glasshouse Country Orchid Society, Glass House Mountains State School, Glasshouse RSL Sub Branch and the Peachester History Committee. Congratulations to these recipients from Glasshouse Country • Australia Zoo - Fay Taylor • Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital - Ray and Murray Chambers • Glasshouse Country Christian College - Eunice Prickett • Glasshouse Country Orchid Society Inc - Jan Gresham • Glass House Mountains State School - Joanne Sharp • Glasshouse RSL Sub Branch - Kaz Worthing-Thomson • Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade - Brian Appleby • Peachester History Committee - Graham Leach • Sunshine Girls Community Volunteers - Sue Brompton

Out and About

While out and about in the electorate recently I was pleased to attend the annual Glasshouse District Little Athletics awards presentation. I have proudly sponsored an award at this event for the past few years and it was great to be able to shake the hand of the budding athlete who gratefully accepted my award for 2012.

LNP announces Arts Grants The LNP have announced new funding grants targeted at small to medium art companies across Queensland. Funding will be available to eligible organisations in urban and regional communities, in a range of art forms from theatre, dance, music, film and visual arts to writing and design. Applications close June 15 and more information can be obtained by visiting www.arts.qld.gov.au.

From Mark McArdle State member for Caloundra. Phone: 5491 2780 Last Sunday, we celebrated Mother’s Day. A day where we acknowledge the love they have given to us and the hard work they have done for us. Previously, the role of a mother was to stay at home and look after the children until we moved out of home. However, over the decades that role has significantly changed. Our society has evolved to the stage where many mums are able to raise their children and work, while also being a taxi driver, peacemaker, entertainer, mentor, cleaner and cook. I know when I was growing up, my mother Clare was all of the above and more. There's certainly a lot more choice available to our mothers now, with two-thirds of mothers with children under six working part-time in 2010-11 (Australian Bureau of Statistics). It’s clear the role of mothers has changed, especially with many households set up differently. We also can’t forget the role grandmothers also play, who often help look after the grandchildren to allow mothers to return to work. What’s great news is that here on the Sunshine Coast; there are a lot of support networks set up with people who can help mothers who might want a bit of guidance. The Caloundra Community Centre, for example, plays host to the Caloundra and Hinterland Family Support Program. On May 21 and June 18 they will run a free baby and toddler workshop, where parent ideas, practical games and the encouragement of good physical health and early literacy development will be discussed. (Phone 5491 4511). The Support Program also offers a free first-aid course for parents and carers with a focus on babies and children aged under eight, and expressions of interest are now being taken. There’s also a range of other networks, particularly on Facebook, where mothers can interact with others and often pick up a great tip or two. Without a doubt, being a mother is one of the hardest jobs, but with the community's support and open-mindedness, we can certainly help make that critical role just a little bit easier. www.gcnews.com.au

Earlier this month, the owner of Ray White Beerwah, Paul O’Brien contacted GCNews to see if we could help spread the word about a property for sale at 10 Carriage Place, Beerburrum. The lovely property is currently owned by a local couple Paula and Darren and while they love their home and the Township, they are forced to move to seek medical assistance with their infant daughter, who is fed through a nasal gastric tube, and is on oxygen 24 hours a day. Paul and his sales team of Andrew Dobbie and Sharon Brown were keen to help the couple out and have agreed to list the property free of charge. Here’s what the team at Ray White Beerwah have to say about the property. Once in a while we list a special home like this, a quaint country cottage. Cypress timber finishes throughout give a character filled home, highlighted by the tastefully hand painted kitchen cupboards. The two storey home features a sunken lounge, stepping up to an office area on one side with a separate dining area (complete with wood fire burner) adjoining the classic country kitchen. An internal laundry and bathroom complete the first level. An internal stairwell leads up to three bedrooms all air conditioned with built in robes (master having en suite). An extra bonus is the completely lined loft area with down lights ideal for storage or a fourth bedroom. Outside there is a large covered entertainment area looking out over the spacious back yard with a 6m x 9m colour bond shed with power, great for work shop or extra car spaces.

Jesus the good Dairy Farmer!

Jesus often used the rustic agricultural imagery of His time to create metaphor and paint ‘word pictures’ for those he was trying to connect with, and so it is when Jesus refers to himself as ‘The Good Shepherd’! In Saint John’s Gospel Jesus refers to himself as ‘The Good Shepherd’. He then goes on to contrast two types of shepherd, one is a genuine shepherd and the other is a counterfeit. One’s a shepherd in his heart; the other a shepherd for hire. On any ordinary day you couldn’t tell them apart. But let trouble come. Let a pack of wolves appear and then the difference is stark. The hired hand runs, because it’s only money to him. He has no ownership. But the real shepherd stays. Jesus said ‘I lay down my life for my sheep’. That’s the difference between the real shepherd and the counterfeit. In a vast country like Australia where sheep

stations carry thousands of sheep, I often find it useful to imagine ‘Jesus the Good Dairy Farmer’. I can relate to this image of the farmer leaving the ninety nine to find the one. When I was dairying I used to have casual staff to assist with milking, herd recording and at other busy times. If I said ‘where’s Clare’? The response would be ‘what number’s that’? Or if I said ‘can you draft Bell out, she doesn’t look well this morning’ the response would be, ‘what’s her number’? These staff where hard working and dedicated, but at the end of the day, it was just a job, they had no sense of ownership. It strikes me as a rather comforting thought that the great creator of the cosmos knows me by name. He knows my situation. Oh, I know that there are those who scoff that the Great Prime Mover of the universe could also be a caring shepherd. But I simply look to the words of the Good Shepherd: ‘I know my sheep’.

Glasshouse Country Bromeliad Society Inc. Contributed by Bob McLean Phone: 0427 606 240 Looking around our garden I am surprised how late the plants are flowering this year. We have plants flowering in May that should have flowered in February. Maybe this is because of the late rain and the weather staying a little warmer. I have been watching the first of the Billbergia pyramidalis plants send up a flower. This one has now faded and passed its peak, but has not been followed by as many as normal. This bromeliad has wide emerald-green leaves forming a relatively open medium-sized rosette. The flower head looks like an Olympic torch and is most impressive, with flamingo bracts and petals. The petals are tipped with cerise and bright yellow stamens. This plant is ideal as a pot plant or patio plant, but it also looks great under subtropical shrubs. This is one of the stoloniferous billbergias that will gradually climb over any objects placed next to it. Curiously, if planted in good soil, the climbing habit is largely lost and the plants clump in the same way as many other bromeliads. It is possible that the climbing habit is simply a response to less than ideal conditions. Billbergia pyramidalis and its hybrids are cold tender, so should only be grown in the subtropics, tropics or in a greenhouse. In cold conditions, the leaves become spotted and damaged, detracting from the otherwise flawless appearance.

The flower – in true billbergia form – is spectacular but will only retain its beauty for a week to 10 days. In a good shady protected location the flower will retain its colour for a little longer. At this time of year if you are fortunate to have a sizable clump you will have a mat of green foliage with a spectacular display of flamingo (deep pink) flowers almost clamped together (as if fitted with a hair band). Within four to five days, the bracts burst open, to develop into this show of blue, purple and yellow captured in this spectacle of colour. You will enjoy this short display of beauty and then the flower will fade to pale washed out pink with the seed pods hanging like a scruffy beard. This plant will not disappoint you with its all-year green foliage and its display of beauty in mid to late summer. As with any of the stoloniferous bromeliads, you are able to cut off a stolon and plant in another location or pot up to give to a friend so as to share the enjoyment and beauty. See You at Glasshouse Country Sustainability & Garden Expo on May 27 to pick up some special broms. The next meeting of the Society will be held at on June 3 at 2.00 pm. Venue to be advised in GCNews edition May 30. Please bring your own cup for afternoon tea, everything else will be provided. For more information contact President Karen Binstead 5494 3677 or Secretary Margaret Mclean 5496 9601.

Ewen Maddock Dam to receive upgrade Ewen Maddock Dam will be upgraded as part of Seqwater’s dam improvement program in South East Queensland. Construction is expected to start next month to strengthen and widen the dam wall embankment, and to install drainage wells below the wall to control groundwater seepage, and is expected to be completed by December. Construction will disrupt road access to the water treatment plant and all pedestrian access across the dam wall will be closed for safety reasons, however public access to the visitor facilities, parkland and boardwalk will remain open during construction for swimming, walking, fishing, sailing and canoeing. The upgrade follows a comprehensive dam safety review conducted by Seqwater in 2010 and will comply with the (former) Department of Environment and Resource Management’s Guidelines on Acceptable Flood Capacity. An exclusion zone has recently been established near the water treatment plant for preliminary studies to occur and for improvements to the plant’s filter tanks. To increase stability and reduce pressure on the dam wall during the construction period the dam’s water level will gradually be drawn down from 100 per cent to 75 per cent capacity. Controlled releases will occur by an outlet pipe over the next three months. Given the small daily release volumes no downstream impacts are expected. Signs have been installed at the visitor car park to inform the public about the dam upgrade project.

Go Green Rainforest Nursery plant of the week Grevillea ‘Elegance’ Grevillea longistyla x G. johnsonii Here at Go Green, one of our favourite bird-attracting Grevilleas is ‘Elegance’. As its name suggests, it has a beautiful form with ornamental fine foliage and exquisite pinkish red flowers. The flowers are dripping with nectar and provide a valuable food source for many native birds throughout the year.

This stunning Grevillea is best grown in full sun and a free draining position. It will grow to around 3m but can be kept smaller with an annual prune. There is a stunning example in full flower that is three years old planted on the road reserve outside the nursery. Check it out whilst driving by or drop in for a closer look.

If you would like more information on this tree or any other native plants drop in and see Simon or Melissa at Go Green Rainforest Nursery, 2620 Steve Irwin Way, Glenview. Phone 5494 5980. Email: gogreenrainforest@bigpond.com Now open 7 days.

The A Grade and Under 18’s travelled to Caloundra on Saturday and the A Grade got caught short by a speedy opposition going down 66-4. But they received plenty of wraps for the courage shown on the night with a shortage of players showing that Bulldog Spirit. The Under 18’s went toe to toe with the Sharks and could be considered a little unlucky to lose the game 30-22, but with a few troops back this weekend at home could see them finish the season well. The women went down narrowly to Burleigh 30-26 down the Coast and are eagerly looking forward to a home game soon. Congratulations to Under 12 players, Aiden Young, Jack Fissenden and Ryan Sauer for gaining Selection in the Sunshine Coast Schoolboys Side at the upcoming state titles and we wish them well in those games.

What glorious weather we are having at present. It's great to see more ladies coming out to play on our beautiful course. We had 70 players compete in one of our fun games on Thursday, a Tiger Stableford. This game is played in pairs and scoring is done by multiplying each players score together. This can result in lots of points, or none at all. Lots of fun and a great time was had, especially by Pam Gormley and Shirley Cooper who won the trophies kindly donated by Brid John and Glenys Parry. Runners up were Lea Garner and Barb Drury and 2nd Runners up were Sonia Kenway and Ruth Bowie. NTP's were Ruth and Sonia on 2, Sue Greentree and Joan Swyny on 5, Pam and Shirley on 16 and Pat Chapman and Leith Barnes on the 18th. The ball rundown went to 40 points. Let's hope this wonderful weather holds. Until next time stay safe and good golfing. MAY 16 2012 |
